- 2:28Speaker 2: We're back. We're here to talk about some geek culture,
- 2:30Speaker 2: everything that's been popping this week. We didn't get to
- 2:33Speaker 2: see a movie last week that we need to discuss
- 2:35Speaker 2: real quick. Yeah yeah, in theaters now. So you know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: this is a pretty spoiler field review. I mean, we'll
- 2:46Speaker 2: still stay away from most of it, but we're talking
- 2:48Speaker 2: about Mickey seventeen, directed by h There we go bon Junejoe,
- 2:55Speaker 2: the director of such great films as Parasite and Snow Piercer.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Uh the other one about the Gia. Yeah, I never
- 3:04Speaker 2: heard the damn name about the hippo hippo snow Piercer.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And I love Parasite, Love Snow Piercer, love OCJA like
- 3:12Speaker 1: and the Man's an Academy Award went out.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So yeah, I went into this for high hopes. You know.
- 3:18Speaker 2: You I think weren't as interested in this from you know. I.
- 3:24Speaker 1: You know what, when I first saw the previews for
- 3:27Speaker 1: this last year, I was just like, something in something
- 3:30Speaker 1: in my spirit said I don't think this is for you?
- 3:33Speaker 3: And which is? You know?
- 3:34Speaker 1: And I like, like and this is a kind of
- 3:37Speaker 1: sci fi ish and things like that, Like it was
- 3:40Speaker 1: just something about it that just threw me off. Maybe
- 3:42Speaker 1: it's just the way Robert Pattinson looks in this, because
- 3:44Speaker 1: he looks like a weirdo on this and I don't know,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and maybe I wasn't paying attention to see who directed
- 3:50Speaker 1: it or whatever.
- 3:51Speaker 3: It wasn't until after the fact that I realized it.
- 3:53Speaker 1: So then I was just like, considering all the other
- 3:55Speaker 1: body of works that were really good and I enjoyed,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I said, Okay, I probably need to take a look.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I wonder if that was a mistake though.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, I went in wanting to see it because
- 4:07Speaker 2: of everything you just say, you know, the director, his
- 4:09Speaker 2: previous works, the fact that it was sci fi, that
- 4:12Speaker 2: fact that of Patterson, who I think is a pretty
- 4:15Speaker 2: good actor, you know, surprisingly after his start, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 2: he's really turned into you know, really great after I'll
- 4:21Speaker 2: I don't really act. Yeah, I read, don't care for
- 4:22Speaker 2: his Batman, But that's beside the point. You know, in general,
- 4:24Speaker 2: I like him as an actor h and had a
- 4:26Speaker 2: bunch of other people that I was interested in seeing.
- 4:29Speaker 2: So I was going into this hype and I thought
- 4:31Speaker 2: the concept was ill. You know, I was like, oh, Okay,
- 4:33Speaker 2: he dies again and again he's in service of capitalism,
- 4:36Speaker 2: et cetera. This this is, you know, interesting, and it's
- 4:39Speaker 2: a lot of the themes that you know, Borrow likes
- 4:41Speaker 2: to tackle, you know, as you've seen the snow Piercer
- 4:43Speaker 2: and parasite capitalism and you know, wealth discrepancies and things
- 4:47Speaker 2: of that nature, things that he talks about a lot.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and but see, you don't learn about that this
- 4:53Speaker 1: movie being about wealth discremacies and social economic and stuff
- 4:57Speaker 1: until after you get into it. Like, maybe that's par
- 5:00Speaker 1: the reason why when I first saw it, like I
- 5:01Speaker 1: saw the aspect of him dying over and over.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I've seen that.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I've seen that concept done many different ways, and maybe
- 5:07Speaker 1: that's why I wasn't initially with it. But then when
- 5:10Speaker 1: you get into the movie, yes, they start bringing up
- 5:12Speaker 1: all these other aspects, you know, social political science like
- 5:17Speaker 1: all that.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Then I was like, okay, this is interesting.
- 5:19Speaker 1: So at first the movie happen, The movie had me
- 5:22Speaker 1: in the first half not gonna lie.
- 5:24Speaker 2: It didn't have me. See I knew that it was
- 5:27Speaker 2: doing some of that because of the trailer, because I
- 5:29Speaker 2: knew that he was doing it for work, So I
- 5:30Speaker 2: knew that it was about capitals. I knew nobody to
- 5:33Speaker 2: take this job, you know, just for you know, shits
- 5:35Speaker 2: and giggles. So I knew that he was doing it
- 5:38Speaker 2: because he had to do it, and so I figured
- 5:40Speaker 2: it would get into the reasons behind that.
- 5:42Speaker 3: And the character is a moron. The character.
- 5:44Speaker 1: They telegraphed that from the beginning, that this character is
- 5:47Speaker 1: one or more or less a moron.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And whether you got to do it for work or not,
- 5:50Speaker 3: I'm like, you're an idiot.
- 5:52Speaker 2: So yes, I don't know that part is true. Yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 2: I it was. It's something that I won't say it's
- 6:01Speaker 2: come up recently, but I feel like I've noticed it
- 6:04Speaker 2: more when I've been watching films as of late. I
- 6:07Speaker 2: can't remember the last film that made me feel this way.
- 6:10Speaker 2: But ever, sitting in the theater twenty minutes into the film,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't ever want to see those first
- 6:15Speaker 2: twenty minutes again, Like nothing happened in them that I
- 6:19Speaker 2: need to ever see again. And that to me is
- 6:22Speaker 2: not a good sign, because then I start thinking about, Okay, well,
- 6:25Speaker 2: maybe there's something coming in this movie that I will
- 6:27Speaker 2: want to see again. They'll make me interested in this movie.
- 6:31Speaker 2: But when you're twenty minutes in. In the first twenty minutes,
- 6:34Speaker 2: feel like I waste your time to you or not
- 6:35Speaker 2: to waste my time, just like I'm just uninterested at
- 6:38Speaker 2: that point the film. Nothing is appealing to me. Just that,
- 6:43Speaker 2: like you said, there was some concepts and stuff that
- 6:45Speaker 2: they discussed early for maybe the first two minutes then
- 6:48Speaker 2: had me interested. I was like, Okay, they're going to
- 6:50Speaker 2: go there. But then within twenty minutes I realized they
- 6:52Speaker 2: weren't going to go there. There's gonna be a lot
- 6:54Speaker 2: of slapstick comedy, a lot of goofiness, a lot of
- 7:01Speaker 2: I guess it's stuff that you see in Parasite and
- 7:03Speaker 2: Snope Pierce here in all the films. But it's like this, yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 2: not like this.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Not in the word and this word of switch like this.
- 7:12Speaker 2: It's one of those films. It's one of those films
- 7:16Speaker 2: like this. It's one of those films where you just
- 7:20Speaker 2: and like the worst of the director's impulses are on display.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, that's a great I'm gonna jumping now too,
- 7:27Speaker 1: because that's actually a great expression of what's happened here.
- 7:31Speaker 3: They let this nigga do whatever the fuck you wanted
- 7:33Speaker 3: to do.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yes, it's just.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And it shows it not in a good way, so
- 7:39Speaker 1: unlike differently from Benja mean, I actually was enjoying the film,
- 7:43Speaker 1: at least for the first hour, because it's an two
- 7:46Speaker 1: hours and change, which is not an hour and change
- 7:50Speaker 1: too long. It could have been an hour and it
- 7:52Speaker 1: would have worked, and I would have walked away generally
- 7:56Speaker 1: pleased or at least entertained. I thought the film was
- 7:59Speaker 1: pretty funny. Yes, there's lots of slaps and stuff, but
- 8:03Speaker 1: there's also and all the characters are all caricatures. Mark
- 8:06Speaker 1: Bruffalo was chewing the goddamn scenery.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Who was the lady who plays.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It's so fucking funny, and you could tell that they
- 8:16Speaker 1: were having a blast, like just being outrageous and out
- 8:20Speaker 1: there as possible, right like and and like they played
- 8:23Speaker 1: off of each other. There werefore those I mentioned Robert
- 8:26Speaker 1: Pattinson's character, at least initially, he was an idiot, and
- 8:29Speaker 1: you know, just seeing him play that type of character
- 8:32Speaker 1: where it's just like, I didn't want to say lovable idiot.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's just just like, damn, you just down bad all
- 8:38Speaker 1: the time because of your own devices, right, and it's
- 8:40Speaker 1: like you can't be mad at the man, it's just like, ah,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you know, you just have enough and also.
- 8:47Speaker 3: You ain't got it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And also Stephen June, yes, he is amazing because he
- 8:53Speaker 1: his characters is an asshole to say the least, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: he plays it so well. And like a lot of
- 8:58Speaker 1: Stephen you and generally before Beef's He's he's known as having.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Characters that people like typically, right, you know, even being.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The voice of Invincible, right, you're just like, oh, you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: like you you vibe with him, and this one you're
- 9:11Speaker 1: just like, I can't stand this guy.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And that's what you're supposed to feel.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So character wise, generally, it was cool, but it was
- 9:17Speaker 1: like everyone was a character fine, funny, cool, But then
- 9:23Speaker 1: the movie kept going and.
- 9:26Speaker 3: That's when.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Bang June lost the plot and that's when I was
- 9:31Speaker 1: just like, he's doing way too much. There was something
- 9:35Speaker 1: and again and this is something I learned. This movie
- 9:37Speaker 1: is based off of a book of the same name,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and from what I read, the book author and the
- 9:44Speaker 1: book author was all like, go bang June hole, Like
- 9:47Speaker 1: he was like, this is great. The author's book is
- 9:50Speaker 1: a completely different tone and a few different things happening
- 9:54Speaker 1: than what's happening into this movie. And I wish I
- 9:56Speaker 1: read the book because there were some good concepts in
- 10:01Speaker 1: the movie that I wish they went deeper into. You
- 10:04Speaker 1: could have kept the comedy, but went deeper into the
- 10:07Speaker 1: stuff that mattered.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Instead of doing that, the movie just oh my fucking god.
- 10:13Speaker 1: It just sat and stewed and marinated in the silliness
- 10:17Speaker 1: for two hours straight, and after a while it became
- 10:20Speaker 1: a waste of time. Like I started to get angry
- 10:23Speaker 1: after a while, like bruh, like bored and angry, like
- 10:27Speaker 1: why is this still happening?
- 10:30Speaker 3: I mentioned, Like I said, it was a very funny film.
- 10:33Speaker 1: There was the sci fi aspects were really well done,
- 10:36Speaker 1: Like the idea of there being copies, you know, copies
- 10:39Speaker 1: of humans, copies of people, how they become copies, why
- 10:42Speaker 1: you would choose to be a copy? Remember socio economic issues, right,
- 10:47Speaker 1: the politics behind that. You know, think about things where
- 10:49Speaker 1: we talk about cloning, right, like remember all that stuff
- 10:52Speaker 1: about them cloning the sheet that was a problem, right,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and all the stuff that goes behind the idea of
- 10:56Speaker 1: cloning humans, and that idea and all the.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Issues that come along with it.
- 11:00Speaker 1: That's interesting, that's great, laws all that, and then to
- 11:05Speaker 1: just run it through that I wish they stuck there.
- 11:08Speaker 1: There's even a crime aspect to it where I'm like,
- 11:11Speaker 1: that would have been fire if they stuck on that.
- 11:14Speaker 1: But no, we just get what I ended up seeing
- 11:18Speaker 1: as a parody of Starship Troopers.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Oh, I wouldn't even say that. I know what you mean,
- 11:23Speaker 2: Like there's like there's bits of Starship Troopers. The Starship
- 11:27Speaker 2: Troopers is definitely just such a I mean, you just.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Don't want you just don't. You just don't want to
- 11:33Speaker 1: say you start Troopers. I'm still going to say what
- 11:35Speaker 1: I said.
- 11:35Speaker 2: It is a parody of charg Tup saying pale imitation.
- 11:39Speaker 1: It's not even an imitation parody of I think, I think.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I don't think you're listening to the words I'm saying.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Do you understand the words that are coming out of
- 11:47Speaker 3: my mouth of a work of art?
- 11:54Speaker 2: No, because I feel you. Because that's like, even as
- 11:56Speaker 2: much as I enjoyed Ruffalo and collect they felt like
- 12:02Speaker 2: I can't remember Shorty's name, but when Will Farrell and
- 12:05Speaker 2: Shorty used to be on there doing the cheerleaders together,
- 12:08Speaker 2: like you know, it felt like an SNL stet, Like
- 12:10Speaker 2: it felt like they were going a whole different movie
- 12:12Speaker 2: than everyone else. Oh yeah, yeah, just a ridiculous you know.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Snl stit stretched out for two hours was their whole thing.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And it was true for the first five minutes, like
- 12:23Speaker 2: most snl stets, and then it was like, no, this
- 12:26Speaker 2: is not working for two hours. I can't And I
- 12:28Speaker 2: think Collect and Ruffalo are amazing, and I felt like
- 12:31Speaker 2: they were just wasted. I felt like very Funny was
- 12:34Speaker 2: doing a lot of work. I'll give it, Like you know,
- 12:37Speaker 2: it was cool. It had moments. I chuckled, Don't get
- 12:40Speaker 2: me wrong, I chuckled, you know, and like you said,
- 12:42Speaker 2: everything about the ideas that were abandoned were much better films.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And during the film and just now, I was trying
- 12:47Speaker 2: to remember where have I seen this idea about cloning
- 12:50Speaker 2: recently and having to wait for the clone to be
- 12:53Speaker 2: dead and assure that, And I'm like, oh, damn it,
- 12:56Speaker 2: they just did this an X Men shout out to
- 12:57Speaker 2: the era like that is one of the defining laws
- 13:01Speaker 2: of their clones is you have the nature the other
- 13:03Speaker 2: worlds just in case, you know, because the things of
- 13:06Speaker 2: this nature that we see explored in this film.
- 13:09Speaker 1: And that's why I said, I've seen this before, which
- 13:10Speaker 1: is why I didn't want to. I was like, I
- 13:13Speaker 1: read this, I've seen this concept before.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Definitely, it was more like that. I figured, you know,
- 13:18Speaker 2: just like you know, Parasite, I've seen you know, class
- 13:20Speaker 2: Struggle before, but I knew because of Parasite he had
- 13:23Speaker 2: a different take on it and it was dope. And
- 13:25Speaker 2: same with Snow Piercer. I've seen that type of film
- 13:27Speaker 2: before as well, but I like snow Piercer. Yeah. I
- 13:33Speaker 2: mean that's how I can pretty much say, you know,
- 13:35Speaker 2: without getting into some spoiler stuff. And we're reading reviews
- 13:39Speaker 2: of this and of his other work, people just say
- 13:42Speaker 2: in general that he can be very heavy handed, and
- 13:44Speaker 2: I guess I didn't get that from Parasite, especially because
- 13:48Speaker 2: I thought Parasite had such ill like little film tricks
- 13:52Speaker 2: and the way it shot, you know, adding to storytelling
- 13:57Speaker 2: things of that nature. So I thought that was dope.
- 13:59Speaker 2: I didn't feel any of it, and this I felt
- 14:00Speaker 2: like this movie was well heavy handed. I was telling
- 14:04Speaker 2: Tardanna that there were several shots that he reused. To me,
- 14:08Speaker 2: it's just like, oh my god, though, you can't be
- 14:11Speaker 2: spending millions on a movie and reuse shots. Give me
- 14:14Speaker 2: a different damn angle. At the very least.
- 14:16Speaker 1: After you said that, I reran the movie visually in
- 14:19Speaker 1: my head and I was like, holy shit, that was
- 14:21Speaker 1: the same shot over and over.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And over again. And it's like leading me a different angle.
- 14:26Speaker 2: If you're showing me the same action, give me a
- 14:28Speaker 2: different view of it, right.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Showing me a different point of view.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And what you're saying is also going to be my
- 14:33Speaker 1: last point about this felt like and it connects with
- 14:36Speaker 1: the whole thing about it being too long. It's he's
- 14:39Speaker 1: trying to hammer it into your head that this is
- 14:43Speaker 1: a this is a parable and a warning about the
- 14:46Speaker 1: dangers of the personality.
- 14:48Speaker 3: I get it, bruh, I just I don't.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I don't think you realized that I get it, and
- 14:54Speaker 1: I didn't need the extra time for you to make
- 14:57Speaker 1: sure I understood. And there's even a point that a
- 15:00Speaker 1: character suffers through. There's an incident that one character suffers
- 15:03Speaker 1: through that I wanted to punch the fucking screen, like.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Why would y'all do this? And why did you think
- 15:10Speaker 3: this was okay?
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 15:12Speaker 1: And again I don't want to give nothing away because
- 15:14Speaker 1: I don't want to fuck but but it deals with
- 15:16Speaker 1: a person of color, and it made me mad.
- 15:17Speaker 2: It deals with a black person. Let's say it's straight and.
- 15:20Speaker 3: It deals with a black person, and it made me mad.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's funny because I was rewatching and Door
- 15:25Speaker 2: last night and once again, oh my god, it's one
- 15:28Speaker 2: of the greatest television shows of all time. It's now
- 15:30Speaker 2: free on Hulu and the first three episodes are available
- 15:34Speaker 2: on YouTube, so get on it. But if you watched
- 15:37Speaker 2: in episode six The Eye last night, and they used
- 15:40Speaker 2: a person of color, a black stin, a dark spin
- 15:43Speaker 2: black man in a scene, and it's obvious that they
- 15:47Speaker 2: knew that they cast a dark spin black man in
- 15:50Speaker 2: this scene and that's why they were using him for
- 15:52Speaker 2: this scene. And it's excellent work, you know, and it
- 15:55Speaker 2: just it says so much, and it's like, no, we
- 15:58Speaker 2: need a dark spin black man for this scene, for
- 16:00Speaker 2: this scene. That really hit the way it does instead
- 16:03Speaker 2: of what they did in Mickey seventeen. Yeah, yeah, some
- 16:09Speaker 2: hot mess with a dark stip with a now I'm just.
- 16:13Speaker 3: A black person.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah, just disrespectful.
- 16:17Speaker 1: It was, and and Ben had to mention, like, I mean,
- 16:20Speaker 1: well before that point, but even especially at that point,
- 16:22Speaker 1: Ben was talk about he was thinking about walking out.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, like I said, it was.
- 16:26Speaker 1: It was again, level of comedy will be subjective whether
- 16:30Speaker 1: or not it was funny. I did think like I
- 16:32Speaker 1: was on the half of the audience that was pretty
- 16:33Speaker 1: much laughing.
- 16:34Speaker 3: I was laughing stuff.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but again it was just you said, it was
- 16:39Speaker 1: his phantom.
- 16:40Speaker 3: It was just too much for too.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Long, and it's just like I got it. We got
- 16:46Speaker 1: to wrap this shit up. I would grade it a
- 16:50Speaker 1: C me.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Too, C minus. And my final thought, just like you said,
- 16:55Speaker 2: to wrap everything up is like you say, it felt
- 16:58Speaker 2: like a foreigner explaining America to me. Yes's and yeah,
- 17:04Speaker 2: And that is the same feeling that I felt when
- 17:06Speaker 2: I read the American God's Book, you know, by the author.
- 17:10Speaker 2: We shaan not mention anymore, but you know that's the way,
- 17:14Speaker 2: you know, even though I worked on the show, when
- 17:15Speaker 2: I read the book, I was like, oh, yeah, bro,
- 17:17Speaker 2: I don't need you to tell me I get it,
- 17:19Speaker 2: you know, and you really don't, you know. And I
- 17:21Speaker 2: don't think that he doesn't get it in a way
- 17:24Speaker 2: that bond he gets it, you know, but it's like
- 17:28Speaker 2: he gets it and it's one of those things where
- 17:30Speaker 2: he's explaining it to you're singing to the court, to
- 17:33Speaker 2: the choir, uh to the choir. You're singing to the choir.
- 17:36Speaker 2: And not only you're singing to the choir when you
- 17:38Speaker 2: make these artsy type movies, you're singing to a very
- 17:41Speaker 2: small choir.
- 17:42Speaker 3: A very specific choir who.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Already's heard the song a million times.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Who is there and and at least at least from
- 17:51Speaker 1: people like on your side, things are there for that
- 17:53Speaker 1: express purpose.
- 17:54Speaker 3: I just want to see how you're going to do
- 17:55Speaker 3: it differently.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and you don't that's c minus check it out
- 18:02Speaker 2: if you feel like it. I'd wait for you know,
- 18:06Speaker 2: any streaming service on.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I wouldn't say run to the theaters.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And also just visually, this is not necessarily something that
- 18:12Speaker 1: you gotta be like.
- 18:14Speaker 3: That's one of the things.
- 18:15Speaker 1: One of the points we do mention a lot in
- 18:16Speaker 1: our reviews will be like whether or not you really
- 18:18Speaker 1: shoul see it on the largest screen?
- 18:19Speaker 2: No? No, not at all?
- 18:22Speaker 3: All right, sorry, damn the worst I've seen but not
- 18:29Speaker 3: my favorite. No.
- 18:30Speaker 2: And I went in with high hopes and you know
- 18:32Speaker 2: they were dashed against the rocks like I jumped off
- 18:38Speaker 2: a cliff into the ocean.
- 18:39Speaker 3: You know, money didn't even make.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I don't know, like I say, he's singing to a
- 18:46Speaker 2: very specific choir on this one. I can't see the
- 18:48Speaker 2: dollars holding it. There's a reason to get released in March.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah, oh, why is people saying it flopped me that much?
- 19:01Speaker 1: Nineteen million domestically, fifty three million worldwide the first Yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you know that's more than I got.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Well, it probably because it costs like three hundred million.
- 19:12Speaker 2: No, it didn't cost that much, but it probably least
- 19:14Speaker 2: costs one hundred something at least. What a waste anyway.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Also out this week is the finale of season three
- 19:24Speaker 2: of Invincible Invincible of Robert Kurtman's Invincible. What's that going
- 19:30Speaker 2: on Amazon Prime? The three? I mean, the finale just dropped.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I honestly did not know it dropped. I thought it
- 19:37Speaker 2: dropped on Friday, like the Severance. You know, I'm always
- 19:40Speaker 2: watching after the Fat so I always thought it was Fridays.
- 19:43Speaker 2: It ain't, and it's out now. I've not seen the
- 19:45Speaker 2: finale yet. I'm up to the last episode before the finale.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I think Hottown might be one episode behind that one
- 19:52Speaker 2: episode behind, so you haven't seen the Invincible War yet.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That's what happens in the episode.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Right before that's I'm right about to be there.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Right about to because at the end of it, ainstroams
- 20:02Speaker 2: like go get him, and that starts it all.
- 20:04Speaker 3: That's where I'm at.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah, when Invincible War only takes one.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Episode, I mean I only got you know, two two,
- 20:13Speaker 1: just like like.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Yeah, and in the comics, I think it was like
- 20:17Speaker 2: two issues. It was not very long either. And then
- 20:22Speaker 2: immediately after that, you know, because everybody's seen the finale
- 20:25Speaker 2: is the arrival of Conquest, who is voiced by none
- 20:28Speaker 2: other than what's my man's name Dean Morgan? Who did uh? Nolan?
- 20:34Speaker 3: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, right, jeff Yeah, that voices Nolan.
- 20:38Speaker 2: That that plays Nolan, not Nolan, not Nolan. What what's
- 20:44Speaker 2: what's the walking Dead bat?
- 20:48Speaker 3: That's Jeffrey de Morgan, but.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Jeffer Dean Morgan. Yeah. What's his name? Megan? Megan's here? Megan? Yes, yeah, well, uh,
- 20:56Speaker 2: he voices Conquest. They say he does a great job.
- 21:00Speaker 2: He appeared at the end of the last episode and
- 21:02Speaker 2: I was not like, oh, that's the Conquest that I
- 21:05Speaker 2: would imagine from the comics, but they say it's one
- 21:06Speaker 2: of those things. As the episode goes on, he really
- 21:09Speaker 2: gets into it. Conquest is not a very deep character.
- 21:12Speaker 2: He is basically there to whoop Invincible's ass like none other.
- 21:15Speaker 2: It is one of the bloodiest.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And more bloody than fucking I'm a man beating his
- 21:23Speaker 1: own child.
- 21:24Speaker 2: All right, people, The reviews say the episode is like
- 21:27Speaker 2: forty six minutes and the fight is twenty eight minutes
- 21:29Speaker 2: of it. It is massive, and they say the animations
- 21:32Speaker 2: are on full tilt like because some of the shit
- 21:35Speaker 2: look cheap. In the beginning of this season, they say
- 21:37Speaker 2: they saved the money for this fight and the comic
- 21:39Speaker 2: it's out of control. No, Conquest is because he's not
- 21:43Speaker 2: like his father. He is more, you know, he is
- 21:45Speaker 2: just there to kill this dude. You know it's not
- 21:47Speaker 2: about that. So and he does a lot of shit.
- 21:50Speaker 2: There's one of the most trifling moments in the book,
- 21:53Speaker 2: and they I've already confirmed that happens in the episode.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I was really tired about it in the book because
- 21:58Speaker 2: they left you on a toff hanger and you had
- 21:59Speaker 2: to wag to move for it. They I knew they
- 22:01Speaker 2: were wan't to do that, just because of how the
- 22:04Speaker 2: end of the last season they have a moment to
- 22:06Speaker 2: do that finale when Mark killed ainstroam Levee and they
- 22:10Speaker 2: didn't do that. At the end of season they went on,
- 22:12Speaker 2: so I knew they weren't going to do that because
- 22:14Speaker 2: that's how it ended in the book mark killing Ainstrom
- 22:17Speaker 2: Levy and you think he's trapped on this world and
- 22:19Speaker 2: you have to wait a month for that to you know. Yeah,
- 22:22Speaker 2: but they didn't do that, so I knew they were
- 22:24Speaker 2: gonna go on. So they went on past that. So
- 22:26Speaker 2: the Conquest Ship resolves itself in the finale, and you know,
- 22:30Speaker 2: they were set up for season four, which I'll just
- 22:34Speaker 2: say this, I really enjoyed season three and it's really
- 22:37Speaker 2: breaking my heart at the same time because they've done
- 22:40Speaker 2: better things than expanding some of the characters, and I
- 22:45Speaker 2: know where it's going, and it's just so tragic, like
- 22:51Speaker 2: and they're not avoiding any of the stuff that happens
- 22:53Speaker 2: in the comic and it's all gonna yet every Like
- 22:56Speaker 2: That's why I always tell you about INVINCIBLEOK, Like, this
- 22:59Speaker 2: Conquish shit is nothing. It's light work. You know. If
- 23:02Speaker 2: you think what happened with Conquest is the most terrible
- 23:05Speaker 2: thing you've seen in animation, or.
- 23:06Speaker 3: I thought I thought Nolan killing.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Basically the worst light work, light work, like Conquests, I
- 23:15Speaker 2: can't lie the The cliffhanger point in this episode was
- 23:19Speaker 2: one of the first times that the book broke my heart.
- 23:21Speaker 2: But then you know it's trying to reverse right away,
- 23:23Speaker 2: so you know, you're like, all right, cool, but then
- 23:26Speaker 2: there is stuff later on that doesn't get reversed that
- 23:28Speaker 2: it's just no, and it's the way these characters grow
- 23:33Speaker 2: and change, and you're already seeing the beginning of it.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I was talking to one of my best friends about
- 23:37Speaker 2: He's like, well, maybe they won't go down that route,
- 23:39Speaker 2: and he didn't want me to spoil anything, but I
- 23:41Speaker 2: was like, nah, bru, they are going down that route
- 23:43Speaker 2: I've set up before on this show. They're going down
- 23:45Speaker 2: the route. And at the end of season three they're
- 23:47Speaker 2: already like Conquest showing up is signaling there's a lot
- 23:52Speaker 2: of stuff that's about to happen, you know, right away
- 23:54Speaker 2: in season four, and I would think by the end
- 23:56Speaker 2: of season four, we're gonna get to where the book
- 23:59Speaker 2: really ruined me, where I was just like, yeah, this
- 24:02Speaker 2: is you know, like damn yeah, and then yeah, and
- 24:07Speaker 2: then it gets worse for Horse after that for a while.
- 24:09Speaker 2: But then it you know, eventually ends. I love how
- 24:12Speaker 2: Invincible tells the story and if they get to the
- 24:15Speaker 2: final end of the book, it's it's you know, it's
- 24:17Speaker 2: one of my favorite comics for a reason, so looking
- 24:20Speaker 2: forward to it As.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Someone who never read any of the Invincible comics, I've
- 24:24Speaker 1: thoroughly been enjoying this animated series from the beginning, and
- 24:28Speaker 1: this season I've been thoroughly enjoying it as well.
- 24:32Speaker 2: I got a question, Yeah, how was that Powerplex episode?
- 24:37Speaker 3: Which one was the power Plex episode?
- 24:39Speaker 2: Uh, the guy with the electrical powers who's trying to
- 24:41Speaker 2: get back at Invincible.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that shit was heartbreaking.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Okay because then the book, I already knew how it
- 24:48Speaker 2: was going down, and watch an episode I'm like, oh god, please, Okay,
- 24:51Speaker 2: maybe they're not gonna do this. Maybe they're not gonna
- 24:53Speaker 2: do this.
- 24:53Speaker 1: No, up, that ship was heartbreaking, and that's why I
- 24:57Speaker 1: do like I said, Besides.
- 24:58Speaker 3: It's just a lot when it comes to the blood
- 25:00Speaker 3: and the gore at times.
- 25:02Speaker 1: But the violence, the level of violence can be like
- 25:06Speaker 1: arresting for me at times where I'm like, okay, I
- 25:08Speaker 1: do need to turn away because I can't. Yeah, but
- 25:11Speaker 1: like just even using the whole power plus episodes as
- 25:13Speaker 1: an example, just again giving you a well rounded approach
- 25:19Speaker 1: even though these are cartoons.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Quote, these are cartoons of people.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Right, and what like a realistic, dirty version of a
- 25:28Speaker 1: world with superheroes is really would like you know, would
- 25:31Speaker 1: be like you know, again similar to The Boys, where
- 25:34Speaker 1: it's just like these heroes are not as good as
- 25:35Speaker 1: you think, or they're over there cussing out little kids
- 25:39Speaker 1: and they're doing this, and they're doing that, they shooting
- 25:41Speaker 1: heroin whatever they're doing, right, like they live in a
- 25:44Speaker 1: life or for the good or the or the worst
- 25:46Speaker 1: or whatever the case may be.
- 25:47Speaker 3: So to see like what drives different people.
- 25:49Speaker 1: And I've always thought about that, like the people on
- 25:52Speaker 1: the other side of things, like when the Avengers are
- 25:54Speaker 1: fighting downtown New York and the building falls and somebody's
- 25:58Speaker 1: family gets crushed, what happens to that person who survives?
- 26:03Speaker 3: What are they going through mentally? What are they going
- 26:05Speaker 3: through physically? Emotionally?
- 26:06Speaker 1: All that stuff and Invincible that's what it's really, the
- 26:11Speaker 1: deepness of it. That's what it's about, the cause and
- 26:14Speaker 1: effect of being a superhero, not just about being a
- 26:17Speaker 1: super to be honest. The stuff you've seen in the
- 26:19Speaker 1: fights and all this stuff, whether or not it's twenty
- 26:21Speaker 1: minutes long.
- 26:22Speaker 3: The fights are just the window dressing.
- 26:25Speaker 1: The real meat of the story of Invincible is what
- 26:30Speaker 1: happens when something happens.
- 26:31Speaker 3: What happens to these people? What about the forgotten? Right?
- 26:34Speaker 1: What about as mentioned the cause and effect of what
- 26:39Speaker 1: happens after Like all those questions that either you know,
- 26:42Speaker 1: gets swept under the rug when you watch big TV
- 26:44Speaker 1: shows or even big movies, stuff that becomes quote collateral damage.
- 26:49Speaker 1: They dive into that, into Invincible, And that's why I've
- 26:51Speaker 1: always loved this series. And that's why I also, like
- 26:54Speaker 1: I have mentioned a few years back, my sister watches
- 26:56Speaker 1: this and she not into comics whatsoever.
- 26:59Speaker 3: And the fact that you can get.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Regular people in on this because the heart of humanism,
- 27:04Speaker 1: right is in there. But this, this ship has just
- 27:08Speaker 1: been phenomenal from all aspects. You know.
- 27:11Speaker 3: I like seeing your reactions to it, especially how you
- 27:13Speaker 3: say how they just expand.
- 27:15Speaker 1: And that's how you're supposed to, to me, do book adaptations, right,
- 27:19Speaker 1: Like if you're gonna do it beat for beat, let's expand.
- 27:23Speaker 3: And when I say for me, I'm talking about the story, right.
- 27:25Speaker 3: You may not change the the the core of the story.
- 27:29Speaker 3: But let's give me more than what the book gave me, right,
- 27:32Speaker 3: you know?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yeah, no, then they give you more and given you
- 27:36Speaker 2: less when they needed to, because it's like Robert Krtman
- 27:39Speaker 2: was definitely a young writer when he was writing this book,
- 27:41Speaker 2: and he's writing all by himself, and he's a young
- 27:43Speaker 2: white dude, you know, and so there's a lot of
- 27:45Speaker 2: dudisms inevincible that they've kind of erased. There's some stuff
- 27:50Speaker 2: coming up that I wouldn't even say dudisms. It's very
- 27:53Speaker 2: like that's that's the other thing about it, especially for
- 27:55Speaker 2: him being a young white male and a straight white
- 27:59Speaker 2: male at that. He does a lot of stuff that
- 28:02Speaker 2: you just don't see in anything. And why one of
- 28:05Speaker 2: the things that I wanted to talk Toronto is why
- 28:06Speaker 2: I think you love it and why people are approaching
- 28:10Speaker 2: it the way they do it is because, like your sister,
- 28:12Speaker 2: it's because it is like The Walking Dead, where The
- 28:15Speaker 2: Walking Dead was the first property to ever be like,
- 28:19Speaker 2: what happens after the Zombie movie? That's what he always said,
- 28:22Speaker 2: That's what it was about. He's like, what happens after
- 28:25Speaker 2: the movie is over? Even if the three sequels, what
- 28:28Speaker 2: happens after that, I want to tell the continuing story,
- 28:31Speaker 2: and now was the first time that that had been
- 28:33Speaker 2: done in large fiction at least, you know, especially in
- 28:36Speaker 2: the comic book or TV series that we see later whatever.
- 28:39Speaker 2: And Vincible is basically taking the story of Superman and
- 28:43Speaker 2: it being like, okay, but what happens if Superman doesn't stop?
- 28:47Speaker 2: You know, like what happens when Superman marries and grows
- 28:50Speaker 2: and has kids? And you know, cause and effect? Like
- 28:53Speaker 2: you said, what are these effects that you know if
- 28:56Speaker 2: they continue to go on? Because normally, you know, in
- 28:58Speaker 2: Superman story, it's reset every few years. The Superman's a
- 29:01Speaker 2: major character owned by DC, and they're never going to
- 29:04Speaker 2: allow his story to end. But Invincible ends like the
- 29:08Speaker 2: book ends. There is a complete ending to it, you know.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Robert Kurtman so far has never gone back to it.
- 29:14Speaker 2: It's really unnecessary to me for anyone to go back
- 29:17Speaker 2: to it because it tells the whole story of Mark
- 29:19Speaker 2: Grayson's life, and it's like you could go back and
- 29:22Speaker 2: tell stories that happened in between things. We have scene, yes,
- 29:26Speaker 2: but beyond that, there's nothing really more needed to be told,
- 29:29Speaker 2: And there's only a couple of things that Kurtman left
- 29:31Speaker 2: out when even he finished it, I felt like, oh,
- 29:34Speaker 2: he dangled that plot line and never got back to it.
- 29:37Speaker 2: But it wasn't something I really cared about, you know.
- 29:38Speaker 2: It's like something. And then the one other thing that
- 29:41Speaker 2: they're doing so well is like stuff like with Rex Flode,
- 29:44Speaker 2: who was one of my favorite characters in the book.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I fuck with Rex.
- 29:47Speaker 3: He's growing, I fuck.
- 29:48Speaker 2: With him so tough, you know, and then Rex, you know,
- 29:51Speaker 2: takes I mean Rex, he's growing, you know, he's growing.
- 29:55Speaker 2: And yeah, and the ship with him and Ray, like
- 29:59Speaker 2: that's expanded from the book. You know, it's like I
- 30:01Speaker 2: can't even remember they dated in the book, but it's
- 30:03Speaker 2: definitely expanded from the book. And yeah, yeah, and so
- 30:07Speaker 2: it made what happens later on. Man, it's just yeah,
- 30:11Speaker 2: god damn it.
- 30:12Speaker 3: It keeps you invested.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, for me, Invincible
- 30:16Speaker 1: is a story about consequence, and that is a large
- 30:19Speaker 1: concept that is completely ignored by like most of the
- 30:22Speaker 1: things you watch. And granted you don't always have to
- 30:24Speaker 1: know about conquests. Sometimes you just want to.
- 30:26Speaker 3: See two superpowered people just fight. I get it.
- 30:30Speaker 1: And sometimes it's really important that you get the backstory
- 30:33Speaker 1: about why somebody's doing what they're doing, and that's what
- 30:35Speaker 1: this Invincible does.
- 30:36Speaker 3: So kudos to them.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely kudos to them. I didn't like the second
- 30:41Speaker 2: season as much, but I think that might have been
- 30:42Speaker 2: because of how they split it up the way waiting.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, I think that might have lessened
- 30:48Speaker 2: the impact. But the way they've been given this straight,
- 30:51Speaker 2: I can't wait for next year for four. Like I say,
- 30:53Speaker 2: it's like they're getting you know, I'm just staying one
- 30:56Speaker 2: more time. Everything you've seen is still prologed. Fan, It's
- 31:00Speaker 2: like we're not even getting to where it really gets crazy.
- 31:04Speaker 2: It's characters that haven't even been introduced. Shit, who you're
- 31:07Speaker 2: gonna fucking hate, And it's characters you love right now
- 31:11Speaker 2: who you're gonna hate, And it's characters you hate right
- 31:14Speaker 2: now who you're gonna love. It's just so wild. I mean,
- 31:16Speaker 2: it's so funny watching people watch the show, because, like
- 31:19Speaker 2: you said, everyone when Knowing went crazy or Mark, they're like,
- 31:23Speaker 2: oh my god, you know what, you know, the memes, this.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Was the worst thing.
- 31:26Speaker 2: I'm sitting there laughing my ass off, Like yo, that
- 31:29Speaker 2: ship was in the first six issues. Man, that ship
- 31:31Speaker 2: was so minor in the mangers and.
- 31:35Speaker 1: In the levels, Like just to tell me something like
- 31:37Speaker 1: that was minor, I.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Said, minor.
- 31:40Speaker 3: What's next?
- 31:40Speaker 2: It's glas like the Invincible war just happens. And like
- 31:44Speaker 2: I say, that takes one thing. God, damn Dad, I
- 31:47Speaker 2: forgot about dinosaur. I can't remember dinosaurs. I can't remember.
- 31:53Speaker 2: There's so much to come.
- 31:54Speaker 1: And and also it's not just all this is my
- 31:57Speaker 1: last point about Invincible. It's not just allious and about
- 32:01Speaker 1: the deafness of of you know, human.
- 32:03Speaker 3: Spirit, Like no, sometimes the ship is just silly and funny.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Hell yeah, but it's balanced, like it tells a whole
- 32:10Speaker 1: story as a person that happens to be a superhero
- 32:13Speaker 1: that is trying to live a life as a teenager
- 32:15Speaker 1: or a young adult at this point, and what happens.
- 32:18Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, and I will and like I say,
- 32:22Speaker 2: there's a lot of dudisms, but I will ask you
- 32:24Speaker 2: give them credit. I think they've handled Mark and Eve's
- 32:26Speaker 2: relationship even better than the comments. There's a lot of
- 32:29Speaker 2: stuff coming with that that I'm gonna see how they
- 32:31Speaker 2: do or if they incorporate it, because some of it
- 32:34Speaker 2: it's to be weird. It might go overwhelm might not,
- 32:36Speaker 2: It depends on how they do it. But I think
- 32:38Speaker 2: their relationship in general is one of my favorite from
- 32:42Speaker 2: you know, comics and after I love Mark and Eve
- 32:45Speaker 2: and Eve especially I just love where she goes and
- 32:49Speaker 2: what happens to her. And yeah, man, I can't wait
- 32:53Speaker 2: to see it.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Yeah, before we go, Ben, I mean, you're gonna be
- 32:57Speaker 1: attending some events soon.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Oh yes, yes, that's right. Well, that's right. Next week,
- 33:03Speaker 2: March twenty second and March twenty third, I'll be down
- 33:06Speaker 2: in the DMV area and the area. First, I'll be

- 33:50Speaker 2: I'll be at Phantom Comics that Sunday alongside my brother
- 33:54Speaker 2: Julian Lettel, and we will be doing a whole ass
- 33:58Speaker 2: you know, interview talk discussion about Jimmy Hendri's Purple Haze,
- 34:03Speaker 2: and I'll also be doing a signing there as well.
