Ep. 210. Who is Squirrel Girl from Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hi guys, it's Megan from Vigilante Vibes and I am here
• 0:13
today to give another character breakdown and this character is,
• 0:17
I don't know if she's underrated or not.
• 0:18
I think her as a character is not, but I think her story is,
• 0:23
if that makes sense. It's kind of like Colossus.
• 0:25
Everyone knows Colossus, but do you really know his story?
• 0:29
Because if you want to, I just released an episode about him.
• 0:31
So there's my shameless bug for the day.
• 0:34
So we're going to talk about Squirrel Girl.
• 0:36
Who is Squirrel Girl? What is your deal?
• 0:38
What is the deal to tail? What is the deal to squirrels?
• 0:41
So Doreen first appeared in Marvel Superheroes volume to #8
• 0:45
in November of 1991 and was created by Will Murray and Steve
• 0:48
Ditko. Doreen Green was born to Dorian
• 0:52
and Maureen Green, which is a wild sentence to say and for
• 0:56
reasons no one could ever really explain, her genes were altered,
• 1:00
giving her squirrel like powers and most notably a really big
• 1:03
tail. When her parents took her to the
• 1:05
doctor they were told she was not a mutant, even though Doreen
• 1:09
believes she was for a really long time.
• 1:12
When Doreen was 10 she discovered she could actually
• 1:15
talk to squirrels after overhearing one chatting outside
• 1:19
her window. She ended up saving that
• 1:21
squirrel from a dog, and the two became best friends.
• 1:24
The squirrel introduced itself as Monkey Joe and encouraged
• 1:28
Doreen to use her powers to help people.
• 1:30
From that moment on, Doreen started daydreaming about
• 1:33
becoming a superhero and came up with the name The Unbeatable
• 1:37
Squirrel Girl. At 14, Doreen decided to make
• 1:41
her big hero debut by ambushing Iron Man in a forest near Stark
• 1:45
Enterprises, hoping to impress him enough to become a sidekick.
• 1:49
Iron Man wasn't exactly wild and politely turned her down, but
• 1:53
then Doctor Doom showed up when a massive aircraft and attacked
• 1:57
them. Doom captured Iron Man and
• 1:59
planned to kill him over the Pacific Ocean, completely
• 2:03
underestimating Squirrel Girl and leaving her alone using her
• 2:07
squirrel communication powers. Doreen called out through an
• 2:11
open door as the ship flew over the forest and hundreds of
• 2:15
squirrels swarmed the ship, chewing through wires,
• 2:18
overwhelming Doom. Iron Man was freed, Doom was
• 2:21
defeated, and the two heroes went their separate ways.
• 2:25
Not long after turning 15, Doreen helped the Hulk, who was
• 2:30
crashed unconscious near her tree house during a fight with
• 2:33
the Abomination. Hulk had suffered A concussion
• 2:36
that left him blind, so he reluctantly accepted Squirrel
• 2:39
Girl's help. While her squirrels swarmed
• 2:43
Abomination, Doreen guided Hulk's movements, helping him
• 2:46
land punches and dodge attacks until the villain was knocked
• 2:50
out. Later, Squirrel Girl moved to
• 2:52
New York City, where they all end up going while stopping a
• 2:56
crime in Central Park. She rescued the Great Lake
• 2:59
Avengers from some muggers and they invited her to join her
• 3:02
team. Not long after, she witnessed
• 3:04
the death of Grasshopper, which deeply frightened her, but she
• 3:08
refused to quit. With the help of her squirrel
• 3:10
army, she played a key role in stopping Maelstrom from
• 3:14
destroying the world. Doreen insisted that Monkey Joe
• 3:18
be recognized as an official member of the team, but he was
• 3:21
soon killed by Doctor Doom and an act of revenge that was later
• 3:26
revealed. That Leather Boy, a rejected GLA
• 3:29
member wearing a Doom costume during later befriended another
• 3:33
squirrel, the only one of her army to survive Maelstrom's
• 3:36
attack, and named her Tippy Toe. Squirrel Girl and Tippy Toe went
• 3:41
on to individually defeat major villains like Modoc, Terex, and
• 3:45
  even Thanos. Awatu.
• 3:48
The Watcher confirmed that the Thanos she beat was the real
• 3:51
deal, not a clone or copy. After Modoc's defeat, Dum Dum
• 3:55
Dugan offered Doreen a job with SHIELD, saying they'd been
• 3:59
monitoring her and considered her one of the most effective
• 4:03
super villain takers ever. Doreen turned it down, saying
• 4:07
she was happy with the Great Lakes Avengers.
• 4:10
While hanging out with squirrels in Central Park one day, Doreen
• 4:14
stumbled onto the Thing fighting by beast.
• 4:17
She excitedly introduced herself as a fan, mentioning that she
• 4:21
even owned a Thing lunchbox. And how do squirrels gather a
• 4:26
the smelliest garbage they could find?
• 4:28
The stench forced Bybees to cover both noses, leaving him
• 4:31
wide open for the Thing to knock out.
• 4:34
After winning a poker game, the Great League Avengers renamed
• 4:37
themselves the Great Lakes Champions and registered under
• 4:41
the Superhuman Registration Act. The very day it went into
• 4:44
effect, Deadpool, assuming they weren't registered, attacked
• 4:48
their headquarters to impress the government.
• 4:50
Squirrel Girl defeated him in combat, with Deadpool's
• 4:53
confusion over her name and appearance playing a big role in
• 4:56
his loss. A few months later, Deadpool
• 5:00
teamed up with the GLA to stop AIM AIM agents who had kidnapped
• 5:06
Dionysus and built a ray that made almost every superhero on
• 5:10
Earth drunk. Afterward, Deadpool stuck around
• 5:14
the team's government funded HQ as a reserve member, even though
• 5:18
he was like, really one of the biggest problems for the Great
• 5:21
Lakes Avengers. So Doreen was a huge fan of the
• 5:26
New Warriors, especially Speedball, who is Robbie
• 5:29
Baldwin, whom she had a huge crush on.
• 5:32
When she learned he'd become the Darker Hero Penance, she
• 5:36
traveled to Thunderbolts Mountain to try to convince him
• 5:39
to lighten up. When that failed, she went to
• 5:42
lap Variad and tried to use one of Doctor Doom's time machines
• 5:46
to prevent Speedball from becoming Penicence at all.
• 5:50
Instead, she ended up in the future, met an alternate
• 5:54
Speedball, and was told by Mr. Immortal that her real task was
• 5:58
kicking Deadpool out of the Great Lakes Initiatives HQ.
• 6:03
During the Squirrel invasion, Squirrel Girl and the GLI
• 6:07
exposed their new recruit, Grasshopper, and as a squirrel
• 6:11
infiltrator after the invasion, they welcomed Gravity to the
• 6:14
team when he relocated from Nevada to Wisconsin.
• 6:18
Eventually, Doreen realized her team mates were holding back
• 6:23
because she was so capable of beating villains on her own.
• 6:27
After defeating Fin Feng Film while the rest of the team
• 6:30
casually played poker back at HQ, she left the GLI and went
• 6:35
solo, returning to New York City shortly after.
• 6:38
She did this because she felt she was holding them back.
• 6:42
In reality, she was most likely the thing that was pushing them
• 6:46
forward. Doreen later became the nanny
• 6:49
for Danielle Cage and lived in Avengers Mansion with the New
• 6:52
  Avengers. She protected Danielle through
• 6:54
several major events, including the Serpent's invasion.
• 6:58
When Luke Cage left the team, Doreen followed him and Jessica
• 7:02
Jones since she was still caring for their child.
• 7:06
After leaving Luke and Jessica, Doreen secretly lived in The
• 7:10
Avengers Mansion attic until she enrolled at Empire State
• 7:14
University. On her first day, she met her
• 7:17
future best friend Nancy Whitehead and Nancy's cat Mew.
• 7:22
Around this time, Doreen also confronted Craven the Hunter and
• 7:25
convinced him to abandon his obsession with Spider Man.
• 7:28
One of her biggest feats at ESU was stopping Galactus by
• 7:33
befriending him and directing him to a moon covered in nut
• 7:38
bearing trees that satisfied his hunger.
• 7:40
While at ESU, Doreen developed a crush on Tomas Laura Perez, who
• 7:45
turned out to be the superhero Chipmunk Hunk.
• 7:48
Chipmunk Hunk. He and his partner Coyboy became
• 7:54
close friends and allies of Squirrel Girl.
• 7:57
In her second year of college, Doreen joined Sunspot's New
• 8:01
Avengers, which later became the US Avengers.
• 8:03
When Sunspot began working with SHIELD, she helped reform the
• 8:06
  villain. Brain Drain confronted Doctor
• 8:09
Doom in the past. Stop Enigma from taking over the
• 8:13
United States. She was briefly mentored by the
• 8:17
entrepreneur Melissa Morbeck, who even gave her a flying suit,
• 8:21
though it turned out to be part of a larger world domination
• 8:24
scheme. As they usually do in the Savage
• 8:28
Land, Doreen teamed up with Craven to defeat a version of
• 8:31
Ultron, fully turning Craven the Hunter into an ally.
• 8:35
At one point, Doreen studied Doombot technology to by
• 8:39
examining Vincent Doonan in exchange for spending time with
• 8:42
Gwen Poole. The two later teamed up to
• 8:45
rescue Gwen's brother Teddy Poole from Mephisto's realm.
• 8:49
Gwen Poole later spoke fondly of this during Doreen's funeral,
• 8:53
which occurred after a scroll faked her death.
• 8:57
During the War of the Realms, Doreen was sent by Loki on a
• 9:01
secret mission to protect North America from Frost Giants.
• 9:05
She teamed up with Ratatosker, and it ultimately drove the
• 9:09
Frost Giants back to Yodenheim by sparking a political
• 9:13
revolution against their rulers. Not long after, Melissa Morbeck
• 9:19
escaped prison and took revenge by exposing Doreen's secret
• 9:22
identity and blowing up her apartment.
• 9:25
Doreen and her allies were lured into Central Park, where
• 9:29
Melissa, now calling herself Iron Ring, took control of Iron
• 9:32
Man's armor and revealed she'd allied with many villains Doreen
• 9:37
and previously defeated, including Doctor Doom.
• 9:42
The battle escalated, with Avengers arriving and villains
• 9:45
receiving Iron Man suits. When Galactus learned of the
• 9:49
fight, he brought many of the villains Doreen had reformed to
• 9:53
her aid. Doreen nearly died shielding a
• 9:56
bomb planted by Doom, but Galactus personally ended the
• 10:00
fight, imprisoning the villains at Doreen's request.
• 10:04
Moving forward, Doreen chose to fully embrace her public
• 10:08
identity, deciding it was the most honest way to live.
• 10:11
And ever since then, the last time we saw Doreen was during
• 10:16
the One World under Doom event where she was on The Avengers
• 10:21
side to take down Doom who was World Emperor.
• 10:23
And that event is still kind of going with Dungeons of Doom but
• 10:26
we don't see her in it. So that is the last time I saw
• 10:29
her, and that is Doreen Green, who is Squirrel Girl.
• 10:35
  She's a very, she's a, she's a goofy character, but she's a fun
• 10:42
  character. She's she's a lot of fun.
• 10:44
If you don't know her, you'll like her.
• 10:46
I've never really cared for her, not because of who she is as a
• 10:50
  character. And it's just, I don't know.
• 10:53
I, when I was first introduced her to her, it was in the Great
• 10:56
Lakes Avengers, who I had a hard time taking them personally.
• 11:00
So I think that biasness just kind of sat there forever.
• 11:04
But I'm warming up to her. So yeah, that's Squirrel Girl.
• 11:07
If you did not know about her. I'm glad you made it to the end
• 11:09
of this video because now you do.
• 11:11
So be sure to like and subscribe.
• 11:13
And if you are interested in seeing your favorite character
• 11:16
being broken down, just let me know in the comments because I
• 11:18
love doing these. With that being said, have a
• 11:21
  marvelous day.
