- 1:26Welcome to the Salish Wolf podcast.
- 1:31Welcome to the show. How do you pronounce your name?
- 1:35My name is Nita. Nita.
- 1:38Nita. Nice to meet you, Nita.
- 1:42And you? It's Todd.
- 1:43Todd Yeah, yeah. Where are you located?
- 1:46I'm located in in the Dardonia, France, France.
- 1:51Where in France is? Southwest, OK.
- 1:58And what's it like there? What?
- 2:04What Can you repeat this? Are you near the coast or?
- 2:09About two hours OK from the coast.
- 2:13Yeah. Is that where you are from?
- 2:18I'm I'm from, from Le Mans, if you know, 24 hours of Le Mans.
- 2:27Yes, yes, yes, yes. I'm from Le Mans, 4 hour of Rd.
- 2:36from my actual location. Great.
- 2:41Well thank you for doing this with me today.
- 2:43And I know you said English isn't, isn't your strongest
- 2:46language, so I sent you some questions in advance.
- 2:49So I'll try to stick to those questions, but if you have
- 2:52anything else that you want to add or any questions you want to
- 2:56ask for me, please feel free to do so.
- 2:59OK, OK, so we'll just start with some basic things that I sent
- 3:03you. So how did archery come into
- 3:06your life? So it's my dad showing me the
- 3:13first bow I made with my brother when I was kid.
- 3:19It was a simple bow with a tiny branch of Hazel.
- 3:27I think every kid in France make this bow.
- 3:32We've So I I make a note. Yes, I we use bowling twine for
- 3:42the string and this is a bow for kid.
- 3:48No efficient, very bad, but for five years old kid is nice.
- 3:57This is my first bow I made and and later my brother take a
- 4:06practice lesson of archery when he was about 10 years old.
- 4:16And he he was, he's left-handed. So I'm right-handed and my
- 4:25parents can buy only one boat and the boy is left-handed for
- 4:31my brother. So I don't even take listen out
- 4:37of archery in my life, but my brother make some listen.
- 4:45How old were you? I'm 21.
- 4:50And and then when when your parents probably.
- 4:53Your brother about 8. 8 OK. 8 years old, yeah.
- 5:02OK, what? And did you start practicing
- 5:05archery after that? Was it something that you did
- 5:08regularly? Not very regular but I I love
- 5:18shooting with with whatever with a bow gun.
- 5:28So my my brother keep this bow and and I play with this bow but
- 5:37not very very regularly and the the real bow I use is the bow I
- 5:50made. I don't have a big experience of
- 5:55archery initially, but because I never afford a real bow in my
- 6:04life. When did you make your first
- 6:06ball? When?
- 6:10Yes. I made my first bow about four
- 6:17years ago and it's pretty nice bow, but this is the first bow I
- 6:27made so this is pretty bad. What did you make?
- 6:33What kind of bar? I make a simple flat bow with a
- 6:42black locust with a handle a shelf because this is my first
- 6:51bow I made so I don't have any experience of of that.
- 6:56So I or you have make some research on the web and make
- 7:03this ball from nowhere but this ball work.
- 7:11Nice. And how did you carve it?
- 7:15Did you use, did you have a teacher?
- 7:17Did you use books? Did you use the Internet?
- 7:20So I use I use many, many source, but YouTube is my first
- 7:34source of inspiration and many bow wear on YouTube help me a
- 7:43lot for make my first bow Yeah and.
- 7:50Do you have any favorite on YouTube?
- 7:56No, yes. But my design is is really
- 8:00inspired by Clay Hayes because he make a very, very nice tutor
- 8:11on YouTube and it's look easy, easy.
- 8:19So that's YouTube. This YouTube helped me,
- 8:25influenced me a lot. And another Bowyer who made some
- 8:33video on YouTube. It's a dream dream craft bow.
- 8:38It's a Polish guy make a bow in the little workshop and this is
- 8:46this, this bow maker inspiring me by me bow with black locusts
- 8:54because I don't even know I can use black locust for MacBook.
- 9:02Do you have black locust scrawling near you?
- 9:05Yes, yes, I found a big source source of black locust in Dordon
- 9:15in my region. This is a region very, very
- 9:23woody and and we have a lot of black locusts and black locusts
- 9:35is considered by as invasive spices.
- 9:42Yes, in France so I use I use black locust because it's the
- 9:55wood more easy for me to found. And many, many buggers in your
- 10:03region use black locust and love it.
- 10:05Yes, yes, I know bad. It's a great bog wood.
- 10:13We don't have Osage. I never see an Osage here in
- 10:19France. I think I can found some Osage
- 10:26but it's really really rare. I don't know why, but because
- 10:31backloggers grow very well here and they, they are similar wood.
- 10:43And so I, I used to be, I really enjoy black locust, but I won't
- 11:00I won't work with Osage one time because he it look
- 11:07extraordinary. Well.
- 11:10Yeah, it's beautiful. Both.
- 11:12Both are great woods to work with.
- 11:14Natha, did I hear chickens in the background?
- 11:18I don't understand. Did I hear chickens?
- 11:21My no, no, you won't have to see my.
- 11:27I do but but I I thought I heard chickens.
- 11:29Do you have chickens near you? Chickens.
- 11:34Yes. Yes.
- 11:39Do you? Do you live on a farm?
- 11:43No, no, no. Yeah, I live in the in the
- 11:47house, but I have two chicken for the eggs.
- 11:53Nice. And it's a lot of work for two
- 11:58eggs. It is a lot of work, but they're
- 12:04fun to have around too. Are they friendly?
- 12:07What are they friendly? Can you pick them up?
- 12:10Are they friendly? Can you pick them up?
- 12:13And yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes, yes.
- 12:16That's great. And in Utah I visited with Chuck
- 12:21Loffler, who was a great bow here, and he has a chicken that
- 12:26basically lives in his carving workshop and sits on his bows
- 12:30while he's carving them. It's really cute.
- 12:35Eyes. OK, so you work with black
- 12:39locusts, What other wood do you work with?
- 12:44I I also work with you. I found a big big tree two years
- 12:57ago and I have I have about 6 staves of you and I make 2 bows
- 13:12with an English inspired warbo and a flat bow with a black you
- 13:24wood. But this is not my favorite wood
- 13:29to work. It's really different for to
- 13:37work and the smell is bad. What is that?
- 13:43The dust. The dust.
- 13:46The dust is rarely toxic. Dust the dust is is bad and and
- 13:52I'm pretty allergic allergic what yes, I make some reaction
- 13:58under you. So I like this wood bow this
- 14:05wood because it's beautiful and and this is is the king of the
- 14:13board. So you started carting about
- 14:20four or five years ago, is that correct?
- 14:24And have you been carting full time?
- 14:28Do you carve as a business or is it a Javier action?
- 14:35This is a little business because I have.
- 14:41Luckily I have some order by customers and I make around 1
- 14:53bowl per mouth for the first time.
- 15:04I'm out of order now. Yeah, I work on the bow for
- 15:11three years every every month and today I'm out of order and I
- 15:18can breathe a little bit because it's a lot of work, a lot of
- 15:25stress for me because custom of the order are very delicate.
- 15:38I'm very hard with myself and I want to the I want the customer
- 15:44feel the work and the the sweat and the blood I make for making
- 15:53bows. I want the perfection every
- 15:58time. But in the bow making process
- 16:02it's impossible for me. But I'm very hard with myself
- 16:07and then I keep this mentality each bow for each bow.
- 16:17So now I can breathe a moment. OK take a moment for breathe
- 16:22because all my order are are made and all my customer are
- 16:29happy with their bow. That's great, yes.
- 16:34What is one of your biggest challenges to making a perfect
- 16:37bow? For me, it's to find the the
- 16:44good, the great design because each each stave is different.
- 16:54And initially I make I want I want to make a stand out with
- 17:01one one plan 1 profile and then make the same profile on all on
- 17:08all boa make. But in real it's it doesn't it
- 17:16doesn't work for me. So I have to adapt at each
- 17:21state, deepen to the growth swing, deepen to the to knock.
- 17:30I adapt my the same profile, but different, different length,
- 17:37different width and and for me, the the challenge is, is that is
- 17:44just I have a lot of problem with with deflex with set on my
- 17:52bone due to this profile. And it's better, better now.
- 18:00But I want to I want to to work more on my profile because I
- 18:13know I know some Boyer can make a perfect ball without a set.
- 18:26And when I make a bow with a tiny set less than one inch,
- 18:34it's lack of potential for me. So my best profile is recurve
- 18:44for me because set is compensate compensated by the the recovered
- 18:51limb and and this is for me the best profile for my symbol.
- 19:01And is there, do you have an inspiration for that particular
- 19:05design you're using or? Is it?
- 19:09Yes, my clay? Clay Hayes is my inspiration.
- 19:14Excellent inspiration. Yes, because on this process I
- 19:21use the same technique but I have it's a bad idea because he
- 19:28work some best of the time with Osage and Osage black locals
- 19:37don't react like Osage. So for Riku of my limb,
- 19:44initially I I tried to make with a heat gun and it doesn't work
- 19:50for me. I don't know if some Boyer maybe
- 19:56that work but me with me it gun doesn't work.
- 20:00I crack every bow in the curving process.
- 20:06So I use a steam steam I make. I have make a steam box for for
- 20:17make my diflex reflex bow and. And it worked pretty well.
- 20:26Yeah, yeah. So it seems somewhat respond
- 20:30better to dry heat and somewhat better to to wet heat.
- 20:35Yes, for the big curve, huge curve with a big, tiny radius,
- 20:43him is better with black Lucas and and I don't work with with
- 20:51you. I try with one bow he I want to
- 21:02make a Rico of you but at the time I bend the limb on the on
- 21:11the the jig he it started to crack.
- 21:17So I decided to make a simple flat bow and don't take risk
- 21:22with this tape. But I want to to retry to make a
- 21:28recurve in U with U bow. So right now, all of the bows
- 21:35that you make are recurve bows, no?
- 21:39Depend of the order I have, but for me it's the best design with
- 21:47my process. But some customer want a flat
- 21:54simple bow reflex deflects depend of the of the of the
- 22:02customer. But I think the bow I made the
- 22:08most is is a very curve I think. Other than black locust, do you
- 22:15have any other word that you use often?
- 22:21For a wood, a wood. Other than black locust, no.
- 22:28No, I I for the order I can make you or black Lucas because I
- 22:37work sometimes with ash, but I don't find ash recently and I
- 22:45don't have a good state for a customer.
- 22:50So I make one time two time Longbow in ash with ash.
- 23:00But black Lucas is for me the the simplest and the the bow I
- 23:09have the I usually use. So I have some references with
- 23:18this wood and the making process is better, faster and I'm pretty
- 23:31opportunist and if I have the opportunity of taking any any
- 23:41other wood, I can make a custom order with with all wood I
- 23:47found. And how did you start selling
- 23:54bowls? How did you get your first
- 23:56customer? OK.
- 23:59Initially this is it doesn't I don't want to make a business
- 24:07with that. I just make a ball, my first
- 24:13ball and take some video and I make Instagram account and just
- 24:23post on that about my first ball and the first ball is isn't
- 24:31really good and I don't like him.
- 24:35So I make another a second I I make this bow for my brother and
- 24:45my I also make a third bow. So I give, I give this bow 2 and
- 24:56a guy order me 3 bow just on Instagram and I make I have a
- 25:12real reaction. What what this guy want?
- 25:17I I think I'm a I'm a newbie, I'm a rookie bowler and a guy
- 25:25want to want three of my bow and I accepted the challenge and I
- 25:35sell, I sell 3 bow that my first order and it doesn't stop.
- 25:47I have one, one order per mouth since three years.
- 25:54So I make them because I like I like make bow making bow and the
- 26:03money is is supplement, But I I don't work for money initially,
- 26:12but it's it's here though, So I keep the order.
- 26:16So I take the order and it's it's the funniest thing I ever I
- 26:22ever make. This is this is a surprise for
- 26:29me. Like my work interests people,
- 26:36so I'm happy with that. That's great.
- 26:40And you name your business Raven Self?
- 26:42Pause. Where did that name come from?
- 26:46Yes, this is this is for me an obvious choice because the Raven
- 26:56is my totem totem animal. I can I I'm I closely identify
- 27:07with and spiritually I think bow and bird are similar.
- 27:18I don't know why, but as I I like the philosophy of the Raven
- 27:31the the the Raven is opportunistic.
- 27:37Bird. Passion and resilient bird I
- 27:46think is the exact qualities you need for making bows.
- 27:52Passion, passion and and resilience.
- 28:01So I love this animal and my logo is is look look like looks
- 28:10like a a winner Viking ring, but it's clearly a stilized Raven
- 28:19footprint. Yes.
- 28:23And I make a brand mark. This is homemade and I designed
- 28:38my logo to be easy easily to make this welding because it's
- 28:48pretty difficult. So I need a simple logo and I
- 28:51mark each each each bowl with with this brand mark.
- 28:59So this is a story of of Raven Sebbok.
- 29:04Very nice. What is your workshop like?
- 29:11We're in it. This is this is my garage and
- 29:19and he it's organised cow. I have a lot of things I make I
- 29:36have I have my stave yes drying here yeah for the the next year.
- 29:44I have some stave on the here yes, my tiring tree on the
- 29:52middle and all all this is is the rest.
- 29:57So I have I have all my tools for knife making because I make
- 30:04some knife you. Make knives, OK?
- 30:07Yes and and it doesn't have the place to make a car in my
- 30:15garage. No car maybe.
- 30:18Maybe a bike, but not the car. And I have my workbench full of
- 30:26full of cow. Yeah.
- 30:31So and I I have only 20 square meter so it's pretty tiny
- 30:38workshop. Yeah, for knife making, are you
- 30:41making the blades or the handles or both?
- 30:47I make all so this is this is a knife I work this is wow.
- 30:58This is my new design. It's.
- 31:01Beautiful. I want to I want to to make a
- 31:07batch of this knife with a different different style, but
- 31:14on with this profile, this form. How do you?
- 31:19How do you porch the metal? Well, I work the metal.
- 31:29This one is it's simply a cut. I cut the I, I lay out with the
- 31:42with the back stand. I make the heat treatment and
- 31:49and I make the the wood. This is a ball wood.
- 31:51Black locust here Bernice. Yes, yeah, I use, I use the
- 31:58waste wood of bow making process.
- 32:04So I make knife when I don't have order for bow.
- 32:09How long have you been making knives?
- 32:13How long have you been making the knives?
- 32:17I make knives since 2 year years ago, yes, but I'm I, I have
- 32:34difficulties to sell it. I don't make some some come on
- 32:49here. I'd I don't make I'd with
- 32:58because I work with Instagram and Instagram shadow ban every
- 33:09account who who show a knife for hunting tools.
- 33:15Really yes, I don't know in France is is that so I it's it's
- 33:25the reason why I make a second account of Instagram it's
- 33:30because I don't want to be shadow banned for showing this
- 33:38is this is not really a weapon, but Instagram Instagram consider
- 33:45knife like a weapon yes. Huh, so your first your bow
- 33:51account is Raven dot self Bose. What is your knife account?
- 33:55What? Your bow account is Raven dot
- 33:58self Bose on Instagram. What is your knife?
- 34:02Raven Sebbo. What is your knife?
- 34:04The Bose page and and yes for knife is the Forge of Raven
- 34:10Sebbo. It's it's Fort.
- 34:16Sorry, say it again. Forge.
- 34:18Wait, the Forge of Raven self bow?
- 34:22There it is, that forage of Raven self bow.
- 34:24OK, I'm. Just going to do I make, I have
- 34:28a little stuff. I don't make a knife really
- 34:33often, but this year, this summer I decided to make this
- 34:40activity grow bigger. All right, cool, those are
- 34:46beautiful. And Axe, you make some accent.
- 34:48Axes, yes, yes, I make some axes, but this is a commercial
- 34:54axis that I customize. OK, I have some.
- 35:02I just I just make the the rock rock design and I reprofile the
- 35:14handle and and I make some some burnish or or color and I sell
- 35:25them and people like axes and I love throwing axes.
- 35:34So this is this is the reason I makes axe.
- 35:40So many manly things. You're making all these
- 35:43masculine tools. It's great.
- 35:46Yes. That's awesome.
- 35:49What are the tools that you use most for bulk array?
- 35:55This is this is my favorite things about making boobs it
- 36:03because it doesn't need a huge equipment.
- 36:08You can make a bow with the with the simple tools and I like to
- 36:17use axis and and axis the saw every everyone I will have a saw
- 36:32and for my first bow. The challenge is I don't need to
- 36:38buy tools for making bow. I want to make a thing that's
- 36:45cheapest possible. So I use my my draw knife, draw
- 36:55knife and the card scrapper. So I have only only I have I
- 37:05bury a rasp two years ago this famous rasp every everyone.
- 37:16The Shinto rasp, yes. Yes, the very game changer for
- 37:23Honda. Calvin I I really love this one.
- 37:29This is not commercialized in France.
- 37:34Nobody used that's in France. This is not the reference tool
- 37:40for make that in France you can found the simple rasp, but it's
- 37:46pretty bad on wood and they work not well.
- 37:52So my favorite tools it is a car scrapper because don't you can
- 38:05use all all tools to hung out the bow you for the tiling
- 38:14tiling process you need the card scrapper.
- 38:18This is the best thing. This is a simple tools I ever
- 38:21seen. I don't even know these tools
- 38:24before starting bow. I starting bow making and this
- 38:30is this is my favorite tool. This is simple and everyone
- 38:38everyone can make these tools with with a metal plate and I
- 38:50love using that When you have the the technique to make the
- 38:56sharpness, this is a great tool it.
- 39:00Is. And you work very well.
- 39:04Yes. And then you make a notice on
- 39:06your Instagram, a lot of your bows, you put design work on the
- 39:10handles. It's not just shaped handle, you
- 39:13also put in texture and various designs on some of yours,
- 39:17correct? I don't really understand.
- 39:23Sorry, no, it's OK some of your handles have a lot of detail.
- 39:28Yes, yes, So initially I use I use a Dremel, the Dremel for
- 39:38make the tiny hole. It's an inspired by gun stock.
- 39:47This is a grip you can use, you can found on the gun but I don't
- 39:55want to make the the same thing. On the gun stock, this is this
- 40:06is very tiny and difficult to make.
- 40:10And I think this hole are pretty well for maker grip and on the
- 40:18first boat I met that this is my boat.
- 40:27This look like it's it's look like is very the whole are very
- 40:36tiny and it's pretty natural and people like like that and I like
- 40:46the feeling and. That's beautiful.
- 40:51Do you put any other details into your bows such as like horn
- 40:56knocks or? The details is the most
- 41:03Alderwood is my overlay with the Buffalo horn.
- 41:11Yes, beautiful is that. The first, the first I made is
- 41:20this one. OK, it's pretty big, big.
- 41:24And now it's thinner. Yes.
- 41:29Is it normally Buffalo horn that you use or do you use other
- 41:32overlays? Now it's a Buffalo horn.
- 41:38It's pretty easy to found in France in the in the pet pet
- 41:48shop in because it's accessible for me.
- 41:56So I can I can buy a horn you follow and it's pretty easy.
- 42:03I I use antler horn, but I this is different I it's beautiful,
- 42:15but I don't like the feel this look like the stone.
- 42:24It's pretty hard and the horn Buffalo is soft and I think it's
- 42:33better and with the wood is better for the shock so I have
- 42:43many order for that. This is an option I make.
- 42:48Do you put aero passes on all your bows?
- 42:51Yes. No, not on all, but for the
- 42:55hunting bows they are often. Do you hunt?
- 43:05No, no, I don't hunt. I never, never hunt.
- 43:11But in France this is legal, I think.
- 43:15Yes bow hunt is legal in France and it is a rare rare country in
- 43:23Europe and you you can hunt with the boat.
- 43:27So this is a change chance for me and I have half of my order
- 43:35is for make a hunting bows so this is pretty cool for me.
- 43:42So you might try it, you think? I like to try one time but I
- 43:49need the lessons and it is it is many difficult but I want to try
- 43:57one time because because I I I like hunt and this is this is a
- 44:11thing I respect and I don't know if I can kill an animal with a
- 44:20bow, but this is for me the the best way for hunt to hunting.
- 44:29This is respectful and I don't like the the way the hunt is
- 44:40making France. But this is a regulation and I
- 44:46don't like. So I I'm not a hunter in France,
- 44:49but the bow hunting is different.
- 44:54And you, this is a this is a hunt I want to try, Yes.
- 45:03It's great. Yeah.
- 45:04I've never tried either and I'm I want to, I think, although I'm
- 45:08not sure if I can kill an animal, but I would like to try,
- 45:13yeah. Yes, this is it.
- 45:17How does Bo carving change your life Netsa.
- 45:25It's both. This is very recent for me, 4
- 45:34years and I never expected that. So for me it's a really good
- 45:44thing because it helped me a lot to work on myself and I really
- 45:53need to have a skill in my life. I want to, I want to have a
- 46:05process. Nobody can take me.
- 46:08And the things I love with bow making is I can make a bow
- 46:15everywhere with a simple tool. And this is a thing nobody can
- 46:25take me. I lost my job two time and I
- 46:34need refuge. And Bomi King is very for me.
- 46:42It's it's like a therapy. I can, I can express myself and
- 46:53challenge myself in other ways than at work.
- 46:58And it's very good thing come to my life.
- 47:05Beautiful. Thank you for sharing that.
- 47:09Are you hoping to get busier with your bow carving or are you
- 47:13happy with one bowl a month for your customers?
- 47:20It's, it's a little bit buzzy because it's a, a, a little
- 47:30stress to have a constant order. You always have that in mind.
- 47:37And this is a thing I really take for my and and I want to my
- 47:50customer are pretty happy with the the bow I made.
- 47:54So this is stressful for me. So I, I, I like, I like have to
- 48:03have a little break to make other things.
- 48:08Yeah. Do you ever communicate or
- 48:12collaborate with any other barriers?
- 48:16Yes Sir. So Instagram community is great
- 48:22and I love the the fact that when I have when I need an
- 48:30advice, they they are always a guy who can who can help me.
- 48:42So recently I designed a new profile of reflex Deflex bow and
- 48:55my brother Stephen Stephen Bieber from provision long bow
- 49:02helped me a lot. I sent him some some plan and I
- 49:12know the these ball are insane. So I want to I want to make ball
- 49:21like him, but I know I can. He has he have a process,
- 49:29incredible process and he make incredible ball and it's he
- 49:36inspired me a lot for deflex reflex and and I really love
- 49:46this work and inspire me a lot. Do you have a dog there with
- 49:51you? And that's AI hear a dog.
- 49:53Yes. Beautiful.
- 50:02It's too hot for. I can.
- 50:04I can hear a lot of pantsing. How often are you?
- 50:10How often do you do archery? I shoot with bow at each other
- 50:20at each order, but I never shoot with mine.
- 50:28I don't have the time to to cool down and take my bow.
- 50:35This is very rare, rare moment. So the most of the time I shoot
- 50:41with the customer bow for the for the the testing yes yeah.
- 50:48And this is never the same and it's pretty difficult, but I
- 50:54need to, to be more consistent and the work because I, I, I
- 51:03have to improve myself and the shooting because I'm, I feel
- 51:09bad. If you want to, if you want to
- 51:12hunt with a bow, yeah, you need a lot of.
- 51:14Practice. Yes, yes, I need, I need to make
- 51:18another bow because this one I'll show you is my
- 51:24demonstration bow. People come in my workshop and
- 51:30test this bow, but this bow is not made for everyone and it's
- 51:38you have some issues. So I need to make an another and
- 51:43if one time I I go to hunt I need to have a better bow and I
- 51:51need to make the the beautiful bow I ever made.
