- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 7th of
- 0:15January and good on you for tapping on play and inviting me
- 0:19in. I hope you're going well as
- 0:22January gets underway. You might be back to the
- 0:24busyness of life this week, or you might be taking a bit
- 0:28longer, or you might be a student or have something to do
- 0:31with schools. Where are you?
- 0:33Still got a couple or a few more weeks of holidays, but wherever
- 0:36you are, no matter where this finds you, we have got a
- 0:40fascinating chapter to read together today.
- 0:43This is a chapter which really is the fulfilment of a long
- 0:46journey with God and David, because today is the day that
- 0:50Solomon finally finishes building God's temple.
- 0:54This fulfils the desire and the plans of his father, showing
- 0:58this country, this nation of God's, that Solomon is indeed
- 1:03this honourable and faithful king.
- 1:06Of course, the only reason he can do all of this and spend all
- 1:09of this time and resources in building this temple is because
- 1:13he is enjoying this unprecedented time of peace and
- 1:17cooperation with the nations around him.
- 1:19So all of this historical journey has culminated in this
- 1:23time where God's king in Israel builds this incredible temple.
- 1:29So today we're going to hear all about how it's furnished and how
- 1:32it's completed. So let's read it together, shall
- 1:34we? Let us read First Kings Chapter
- 1:377. Solomon also built a palace for
- 1:50himself. It took him 13 years to complete
- 1:54the construction. One of Solomon's buildings was
- 1:57called the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.
- 2:00It was 150 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.
- 2:06There were four rows of cedar pillars, and great cedar beams
- 2:09rested on the pillars. The hall had a cedar roof above
- 2:13the beams. On the pillars were 45 side
- 2:16rooms arranged in three tiers of 15 each.
- 2:20On each end of the long hall were three rows of windows
- 2:24facing each other. All the doorways and door posts
- 2:27had rectangular frames and were arranged in sets of three facing
- 2:31each other. Solomon also built the Hall of
- 2:34Pillars, which was 75 feet long and 45 feet wide.
- 2:39There was a porch in front, along with a canopy supported by
- 2:42pillars. Solomon also built the throne
- 2:45room, known as the Hall of Justice.
- 2:49There he sat to hear legal matters.
- 2:51It was panelled with cedar from floor to ceiling.
- 2:54Solomon's living quarters surrounded a courtyard behind
- 2:58this hall, and they were constructed the same way.
- 3:01He also built similar living quarters for Pharaoh's daughter
- 3:04whom he had married. From foundation to eaves, all
- 3:08these buildings were built from huge blocks of high quality
- 3:12stone cut with saws and trimmed to exact measure on all sides.
- 3:18Some of the huge foundation stones were 15 feet long and
- 3:22some were 12 feet long. The blocks of high quality stone
- 3:26used in the walls were also cut to measure, and cedar beams were
- 3:30also used. The walls of the great courtyard
- 3:34were built so that there was one layer of cedar beams between
- 3:37every three layers of finished stone, just like the walls of
- 3:41the inner courtyard of the Lord's Temple with its entry
- 3:44room. King Solomon then asked for a
- 3:48man named Hurim to come from Tyre.
- 3:51He was half Israelite since his mother was a widow from the
- 3:54tribe of Naftali and his father had been a Craftsman in bronze
- 3:58from Tyre. Hurim was extremely skilful and
- 4:02talented in any work in bronze, and he came to do all the metal
- 4:06work for King Solomon. Hurim cast 2 bronze pillars,
- 4:11each 27 feet tall and 18 feet in circumference.
- 4:16For the tops of the pillars he cast bronze capitals, each 7 1/2
- 4:21feet tall. Each capital was decorated with
- 4:24seven sets of latticework and interwoven chains.
- 4:28He also encircled the latticework with two rows of
- 4:31pomegranates to decorate the capitals over the pillars.
- 4:35The capitals on the columns inside the entry room were
- 4:38shaped like water lilies, and they were 6 feet tall.
- 4:42The capitals on the two pillars had 200 pomegranates in two rows
- 4:47around them. Beside the rounded surface next
- 4:50to the latticework, Hurim set the pillars at the entrance of
- 4:53the temple, one toward the South and one toward the north.
- 4:57He named the one on the South Jackin and the one on the North
- 5:01Boaz. The capitals on the pillars were
- 5:04shaped like water lilies, and so the work on the pillars was
- 5:08finished. Then Hurum cast a great round
- 5:12basin 15 feet across from rim to rim, called the Sea.
- 5:17It was 7 1/2 feet deep and about 45 feet in circumference.
- 5:23It was encircled just below its rim by two rows of decorative
- 5:27gourds. There were about 6 gourds per
- 5:30foot all the way round, and they were cast as part of the basin.
- 5:35The sea was placed on a base of 12 bronze oxen, all facing
- 5:39outward. 3 faced N, 3 faced W, 3 faced South and three faced
- 5:45east, and the sea rested on them.
- 5:48The walls of the sea were about 3 inches thick, and its rim
- 5:52flared out like a cup and resembled a water Lily blossom.
- 5:56It could hold about 11,000 gallons of water.
- 6:01Hurum also made 10 bronze water carts, each 6 feet long, 6 feet
- 6:07wide, and four and a half feet tall.
- 6:10They were constructed with side panels braced with crossbars.
- 6:13Both the panels and the crossbars were decorated with
- 6:16carved lions, oxen, and cherubim.
- 6:19Above and below the lions and oxen were wreath decorations.
- 6:24Each of these carts had four bronze wheels and bronze axles.
- 6:28There were supporting posts for the bronze basin at the corners
- 6:32of the carts. These supports were decorated on
- 6:34each side with carvings of wreaths.
- 6:37The top of each cart had a rounded frame for the basin.
- 6:42It projected 1 1/2 feet above the cart's top like a round
- 6:46pedestal, and its opening was 2 1/4 feet across.
- 6:50It was decorated on the outside with carvings of wreaths.
- 6:54The panels of the carts were square, not round.
- 6:57Under the panels were four wheels that were connected to
- 7:00axles that had been cast as one unit with the cart.
- 7:04The wheels were two and a quarter feet in diameter and
- 7:07were similar to the chariot wheels.
- 7:09The axles, spokes, rims, and hubs were all cast from molten
- 7:14bronze. There were handles at each of
- 7:17the four corners of the carts and these two were cast as one
- 7:21unit with the cart. Around the top of each cart was
- 7:24a rim 9 inches wide. The corner supports and side
- 7:29panels were cast as one unit with the cart.
- 7:32Carvings of cherubim, lions and palm trees decorated the panels
- 7:37and corner supports wherever there was room, and there were
- 7:40wreaths all around. All 10 water carts were the same
- 7:44size and were made alike, for each was cast from the same
- 7:48mould. Hurum also made 10 smaller
- 7:52bronze basins, one for each cart.
- 7:55Each basin was 6 feet across and could hold 220 gallons of water.
- 8:00He set 5 water carts on the South side of the temple and
- 8:04five on the north side. The great bronze basin called
- 8:08the sea was placed near the southeast corner of the temple.
- 8:12He also made the necessary wash basins, shovels and bowls.
- 8:16So at last Hurum completed everything King Solomon had
- 8:20assigned him to make for the Temple of the Lord.
- 8:22The two pillars. The two bowl shaped capitals on
- 8:25top of the pillars. The two networks of interwoven
- 8:29chains that decorated the capitals.
- 8:31The 400 pomegranates that hung from the chains on the capitals.
- 8:352 rows of pomegranates for each of the chain networks that
- 8:38decorated the capitals on top of the pillars.
- 8:41The 10 water carts holding the 10 basins.
- 8:44The sea and the 12 oxen under it.
- 8:47The ash buckets, the shovels, and the balls Hurim made all
- 8:53these things of burnished bronze for the Temple of the Lord, just
- 8:57as King Solomon had directed. The king had them cast in clay
- 9:01moulds in the Jordan Valley between Sucketh and Zarathan.
- 9:06Solomon did not weigh all these things because there were so
- 9:08many. The weight of the bronze could
- 9:11not be measured. Solomon also made all the
- 9:14furnishings of the Temple of the Lord.
- 9:16The gold altar, the gold table for the bread of the presents.
- 9:20The lamp stands of solid gold, five in the South and five in
- 9:24the north in front of the Most Holy Place.
- 9:27The flower decorations, lamps, and tongs, all of gold.
- 9:31The small bowls, lamp snuffers, bowls, ladles, and incense
- 9:35burners, all of solid gold. The doors for the entrance to
- 9:39the Most Holy Place and the main room of the temple with their
- 9:43fronts overlaid with gold. So King Solomon finished all his
- 9:49work on the temple of the Lord. Then he brought all the gifts
- 9:53His father David had dedicated, the silver, the gold and the
- 9:57various articles, and he stored them in the treasuries of the
- 10:02Lord's temple. Our Lord, as we hear of all of
- 10:15this work being completed just as you had required it to be, so
- 10:21we're so aware that it was a generation beforehand that the
- 10:26King really wanted this to happen, but in your timing, it
- 10:31was best to wait. Our Lord, we know in our lives
- 10:35we just see all the things that we are sure would be so good for
- 10:40your Kingdom and for our lives and we hear your voice saying
- 10:45not now wait. Our Lord, give us confidence in
- 10:50your knowledge being so much greater than ours so that we can
- 10:54be content to follow your promptings and sometimes to wait
- 10:59even though our human wisdom says do it now.
- 11:03Lord, we submit to You and your plans far greater than ours,
- 11:08because you and Your glory outstrip anything that human
- 11:13hands could ever craft or conceive of themselves.
- 11:17So we just worship you, the same God who has worshipped in that
- 11:22temple all those generations ago.
- 11:25We lift up our hands to you and we praise You, mighty God,
- 11:30everlasting Saviour. And we pray all of this through
- 11:35that saving name of Jesus, Amen.
