- 0:15how God's guidance transformed their understanding of anger,
- 0:18and practical biblical lessons for managing this powerful emotion.
- 0:23Stay with us. This could be helpful in your emotional and spiritual growth. Here's part two.
- 0:30It's not always easy to manage our anger successfully. Often,
- 0:34outbursts of emotion driven by our passion to do what's right,
- 0:37or by our rejection of what's wrong, manifest as overt anger.
- 0:42This can be seen in our tone of voice, facial expressions, and critical reactions.
- 0:47It's frustrating to try to improve ourselves and feel like we're not making progress.
- 0:52That is, until we entered a dark season, one that forced us to be intentional
- 0:57about our hearts, and God guided us toward understanding.
- 1:01When we encountered the book, The Emotionally Healthy Marriage by Dr.
- 1:05David Stoop and Dr. Jan Stoop, we
- 1:08had the opportunity to broaden our understanding of the land of emotions.
- 1:12Though we knew from the beginning of our marriage that healthy communication is vital,
- 1:16We overlooked the fact that our current behavioral habits were influenced by
- 1:20circumstances from our pasts, things that existed long before we said, I do.
- 1:26Our struggles with navigating our emotions, especially anger.
- 1:30Stemmed largely from a life lived away from God's authority.
- 1:33Sadly, our distant relationship with God greatly impacts how we handle anger.
- 1:38This is a truth many still miss today.
- 1:41When anger surfaces, our immediate response is often to attack the source,
- 1:46which can sometimes be effective, at least temporarily.
- 1:49But eventually, we confront the reality that managing anger isn't just about
- 1:54addressing the trigger.
- 1:55It also involves how we handle the emotion of anger itself.
- 1:59Unfortunately, this aspect is often neglected because humility is necessary.
- 2:04We must admit that we need help in navigating these feelings.
- 2:08And ongoing guidance is essential for dealing with anger in the right way.
- 2:12Accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior is the first step in deliverance from the
- 2:17bondage of unprocessed, unhealthy anger from the past. But that's just the beginning.
- 2:22As we grow in our connection with the Holy Spirit, God gives us divine help
- 2:27and guidance to transform the inherited ways we've previously managed anger.
- 2:32A well-known Bible verse about anger is, Be angry, and yet do not sin.
- 2:38Ephesians 4 verse 26a. Be angry, and yet do not sin.
- 2:43Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.
- 2:48Ephesians 4 verses 26-27.
- 2:51When we look at the whole chapter, the first part, Ephesians 4 verses 1-16,
- 2:57emphasizes our unity with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:00The second part, Ephesians 4 verses 17-32, describes the Christian walk.
- 3:05While there are many lessons in this
- 3:07chapter, some key points that help us understand and manage anger are, 1.
- 3:12Our Christian journey is impossible without being united with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:17Our intention to walk this life anchored in Christ is influenced by the Spirit,
- 3:22whom God the Father sends in Jesus' name, as noted in John 14, verse 26.
- 3:282. The Christian walk does not eradicate anger. That's not realistic.
- 3:33Verse 26 reminds us that this emotion will come along the journey. 3.
- 3:39When we accept Christ as Savior, He pays the penalty for our sins.
- 3:43Yet, the weakness of our flesh, the brokenness of this world.
- 3:47And the presence of Satan can still tempt us towards sin, but our connection
- 3:52with Christ and the Holy Four.
- 3:54Spirit helps us resist the temptation to fall back into sin.
- 3:584. Ephesians 4 verse 26 b advises us not to let the sun go down on our anger,
- 4:04because doing so allows Satan to creep in and disrupt our communion with God. 5.
- 4:10Further in the chapter, Ephesians 4 verses 30-32, we see that anger,
- 4:16bitterness, wrath, clamor, and slander grieve the Holy Spirit,
- 4:20affecting the joy and peace that we are meant to experience through Him.
- 4:25Many other Bible verses can surely help us manage anger.
- 4:28We highlighted this passage in Ephesians 6 because it beautifully ties our relationship
- 4:33with Christ to our connection with the Holy Spirit.
- 4:36While Paul emphasizes a swift approach to quelling anger,
- 4:40He also underscores the crucial role of the Holy Spirit in helping us do so.
- 4:45Don't be discouraged if you feel less progressed, even after embracing the gospel.
- 4:50Don't let this discouragement lead to passivity.
- 4:53Transformation anchored in Christ is a process. Each critical moment,
- 4:58especially in dealing with anger, is an opportunity to choose Him.
- 5:02Transformation happens gradually, as noted in Philippians 3 verse 21 and Ephesians
- 5:084 verses 22-24 and is rooted in our relationship with Jesus.
