- 3:28Speaker 7: Joe apartment house out there, Perry says, that's where Red
- 3:31Speaker 7: makes his pickups.
- 3:32Speaker 8: We're about to sad stand I know the address, I
- 3:35Speaker 8: know the neighborhood, though, I'll recognize the place when I

- 3:38Speaker 6: How you feel now, Stan? Any better? Oh? Lousy sugard.
- 3:42Speaker 6: Here's a fix about now. Sorry, Perry just can't help
- 3:45Speaker 6: you there.
- 3:45Speaker 4: How are you gonna handle this thing, Captain? I mean
- 3:47Speaker 4: picking up Stan and Max Higby? You figure we can
- 3:49Speaker 4: keep it quiet?
- 3:50Speaker 7: Newspapers are going to cooperate. They're not gonna print a
- 3:52Speaker 7: word about it.
- 3:53Speaker 6: I'm gonna handle a court work.
- 3:54Speaker 9: Stan and Max are gonna wave there preliminary Oh, to
- 3:57Speaker 9: give us five to six weeks quiet if we needed.
- 4:00Speaker 6: You can't reach the rest of the gang. But then
- 4:01Speaker 6: we'll never reach them. Sure, feel lousy sick? I never
- 4:05Speaker 6: tried to kick the habit before. How long does it take?
- 4:07Speaker 5: It all depends how bad are you hook?
- 4:09Speaker 6: Oh?
- 4:10Speaker 10: Not bad.
- 4:10Speaker 6: I'm just chippy with it? Not more in a cap
- 4:12Speaker 6: a day? Where are we going out of Stan? Keep
- 4:17Speaker 6: going straight?
- 4:17Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 4:18Speaker 6: Straight ahead? Turn off snuft for a while.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Yet, Well, how do you figure it from here on in? Captain?
- 4:23Speaker 5: What do I do about Red?
- 4:25Speaker 7: You're gonna have to con your way through. I had
- 4:27Speaker 7: the crime lad to fix up a dummy package for you.
- 4:29Speaker 7: I'm a seat thick as the same rappings as the one.
- 4:32Speaker 7: The real stuff came in package Stan gave you in
- 4:35Speaker 7: the restaurant. Take it back to Red and scream your
- 4:37Speaker 7: head off. Yeah, you're telling me you got the package
- 4:40Speaker 7: from Stan and Max and you paid them the six
- 4:42Speaker 7: geese for it. You opened it up and found it
- 4:44Speaker 7: pull of powdered sugar bread them off. Put it on big.
- 4:47Speaker 7: You got a gun?
- 4:48Speaker 5: No, I haven't. I checked it in my locker when
- 4:50Speaker 5: I started on this sort.
- 4:51Speaker 7: Take mine bay, make it heavy. Pretend you're going to
- 4:55Speaker 7: gun him. What if it doesn't work, skipping that's taken
- 4:58Speaker 7: care of too. There'll be a couple of men on
- 5:00Speaker 7: the street, Joe. If you get your back to a wall,
- 5:02Speaker 7: break the window, they'll come running.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Okay, I'll give it a try. You think Red still
- 5:06Speaker 5: his hotel? Stand sure?
- 5:08Speaker 6: It's probably waiting for me and Max.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Anybody with him. You think no?
- 5:12Speaker 4: I don't think so, all right, Bet, I wonder if
- 5:15Speaker 4: you'd call my mother the first chance you gets.
- 5:16Speaker 5: You might be a little worried.
- 5:17Speaker 9: You don't have to. She called the office before we lap. Oh,
- 5:20Speaker 9: I think I convinced her everything was rying.
- 5:22Speaker 7: Oh, thanks a lot, Yeah, that's it. We'll let you
- 5:26Speaker 7: out at the next corner. Head back for the hotel. Right,
- 5:29Speaker 7: good luck, Joe, Thanks, how about it, Perish anything else
- 5:36Speaker 7: you can give us, it might help him.
- 5:37Speaker 6: I don't know. I'm gonna take a lot of fun.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Only one way you can get that.
- 5:42Speaker 5: Yeah, you better get yourself a good fix.
- 5:49Speaker 4: I left Captain kearney ed Jacobs in the Narcotic Suspect
- 5:52Speaker 4: Stan Perish on the corner of Western and Wiltshire and
- 5:55Speaker 4: made my way to Red's hotel on West fifty fourth Street.
- 5:58Speaker 4: I went up to the second floor on found his
- 6:00Speaker 4: door open.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I walked in.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Red was sitting in an overstuffed chair next to the radio,
- 6:05Speaker 4: listening to the police calls coming in.
- 6:08Speaker 6: It's why the gun.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Don't try any your cunning this time. You're two bit
- 6:12Speaker 5: with it, no matter with you.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Put the gun down, No, not.
- 6:14Speaker 5: Before I get what's coming to me? You and your
- 6:15Speaker 5: lousy punks.
- 6:16Speaker 6: What are you talking about? Where's standing Max dead?
- 6:18Speaker 4: I hope that leaves only you to deal with. I
- 6:20Speaker 4: should have known better the first time when you had
- 6:21Speaker 4: me tamp I should have gotten out right.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Then what's your craw?
- 6:23Speaker 6: Guy? Come on, let's settle.
- 6:25Speaker 5: You know what I look for yourself? Six g's worth,
- 6:27Speaker 5: powdered sugar. You didn't think he could beat me for this,
- 6:29Speaker 5: did you?
- 6:29Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 6:30Speaker 4: There's more in this than me. If you don't square
- 6:32Speaker 4: up this thing with us, there's ways of taking care
- 6:33Speaker 4: of you. I'm on the lamb anyway. Now, one more
- 6:35Speaker 4: Beefer is gonna make that.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Much a gun down? Will you? Now, let's talk it out.
- 6:38Speaker 6: It doesn't make sense if you've been beaten so of I.
- 6:40Speaker 5: I will try to sell me that line. Get both
- 6:41Speaker 5: of them out. I know they're here, now, come on,
- 6:42Speaker 5: get them out here.
- 6:43Speaker 6: We watch that gun?
- 6:44Speaker 5: Were you?
- 6:45Speaker 11: I don't know what you're getting at, lindsay they're not here.
- 6:47Speaker 11: Didn't you see him? Max and staining h I saw him.
- 6:49Speaker 4: That's why I'm here. I gave him the money, six
- 6:50Speaker 4: yards of it, and that's what I got, powdered sugar.
- 6:52Speaker 4: And you start explaining, smart guy, it's the truth.
- 6:54Speaker 11: I don't know where they are. I gave Stan and
- 6:56Speaker 11: Max twenty ounces to take to you. I told Stan
- 6:58Speaker 11: and make the meat with you inside. The rest of
- 7:00Speaker 11: max is supposed to be the look at it.
- 7:01Speaker 6: Oh yeah, sure, so help me.
- 7:03Speaker 11: I don't get it. You have never tried anything like
- 7:05Speaker 11: this before. Once you tipped off at all. Maybe the
- 7:07Speaker 11: way they acted something I said.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Oh, nothing, that moot. Stan was a little unhappy. He
- 7:11Speaker 4: said he wanted to fix and you wouldn't give it
- 7:12Speaker 4: on him.
- 7:12Speaker 5: That's right, I wouldn't, well, and you should have known better.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It's no time to get stingy with him when he's
- 7:16Speaker 5: gonna make a deal for you.
- 7:17Speaker 11: You know what happened the last time he took a
- 7:18Speaker 11: fix before a job. I sent him out to that
- 7:20Speaker 11: park to watch you. He ends up by tamping. I'm
- 7:23Speaker 11: leveling with you, Lindsay. I think we've both been taken.
- 7:25Speaker 11: I still don't get it, though, I can't understand why
- 7:27Speaker 11: they'd run out on me.
- 7:27Speaker 5: Now.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Look, I haven't got the time to draw you pictures, mister.
- 7:30Speaker 4: All I know is Mike Do's gone and you haven't
- 7:31Speaker 4: delivered the stuff. Now you get with it.
- 7:32Speaker 6: I'll wait, I'm minute. How do I know for sure?
- 7:35Speaker 5: What?
- 7:35Speaker 6: How do I know?
- 7:36Speaker 11: You didn't get the real merchandise and you took care
- 7:38Speaker 11: of maxims. Stand, how do I know you didn't build
- 7:40Speaker 11: a frame?
- 7:40Speaker 5: Oh?
- 7:40Speaker 4: Sure, that's why I'm back here. I got twenty ounces
- 7:42Speaker 4: free and I want another twenty. I met those mooches
- 7:45Speaker 4: of yours and took care of them all by myself.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Now that makes a lot of sense, doesn't it. Now,
- 7:48Speaker 4: get off at Red. You're not going to pour them
- 7:50Speaker 4: mouth of me out of this. I paid my six
- 7:52Speaker 4: g's and I want the merchandise full, twenty ounces, and
- 7:53Speaker 4: I want.
- 7:54Speaker 5: It right now.
- 7:54Speaker 11: Crazy, I can't do that. You have to give me time.
- 7:56Speaker 11: We don't keep this stuff here. It isn't mine in
- 7:58Speaker 11: the first place.
- 7:58Speaker 5: What are you handed me?
- 7:59Speaker 11: It isn't I'm just a middleman, that's all. You'll have
- 8:02Speaker 11: to give me time. Maybe we can work out something
- 8:03Speaker 11: for you.
- 8:04Speaker 4: You bet you're going to work out something for me.
- 8:06Speaker 4: You've got my six g's. Why'd you try and big
- 8:07Speaker 4: shot me in the first place?
- 8:08Speaker 6: Calm down?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Trying to make me believe you were the big man.
- 8:11Speaker 4: You gotta get wise to yourself. Read why should I
- 8:13Speaker 4: deal with a middleman? I can probably buy the junk
- 8:15Speaker 4: cheaper from your boss. Now, where's heat?
- 8:16Speaker 11: You couldn't buy it a two g's an ounce he
- 8:18Speaker 11: wouldn't sell it to you. I handle all this stuff.
- 8:20Speaker 11: I'm the only one he works through.
- 8:21Speaker 4: What makes you so special? You can't even handle a
- 8:23Speaker 4: twenty houns deal and keep it straight?
- 8:24Speaker 6: Stay cool? Will you give me twenty four hours?
- 8:26Speaker 5: What am I supposed to be doing in the meantime.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Same thing I'll be doing, worrying about getting that stuff back?
- 8:30Speaker 5: Why try and cover up your mooch? Is Red out
- 8:32Speaker 5: on you?
- 8:32Speaker 11: Maybe I want to make sure I'll get the word out. Yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 11: I'll find out what happened before I left Red.
- 8:39Speaker 4: We set up a meet for the following night in
- 8:40Speaker 4: his hotel room at seven pm. Then I left, went
- 8:44Speaker 4: downtown to an all night drug store and put in
- 8:46Speaker 4: calls to Captain Kearney and my partner at Jacobs.
- 8:49Speaker 5: I briefed him on what had.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Happened with Red, and the Captain set it up for
- 8:52Speaker 4: the three of us to meet early that morning and
- 8:54Speaker 4: plan the next move.
- 8:55Speaker 5: The meeting point was down off Gallardo Street, alongside the
- 8:58Speaker 5: Santa Fe train yards.
- 9:02Speaker 6: Y'all over here, Hi ed Cap. Hi.
- 9:08Speaker 5: A little late.
- 9:09Speaker 6: Anything happened, but I did some doubling back.
- 9:11Speaker 5: I wanted to make sure.
- 9:12Speaker 6: I wasn't followed things worked out with Red high not trouble?
- 9:14Speaker 5: Why not so far?
- 9:15Speaker 6: No?
- 9:16Speaker 5: I think he went for my story.
- 9:17Speaker 4: He said he's going to do some checking around though,
- 9:19Speaker 4: try to find out what happened to standon Max.
- 9:21Speaker 9: Yeah, halfway figured then that story you told him. I
- 9:24Speaker 9: thought if Red bought that, you'd be in.
- 9:26Speaker 5: We didn't buy it that far. I guess it made
- 9:29Speaker 5: an impression. Waving again. Nobody still has some doubts.
- 9:32Speaker 6: What else can you do to get yourself in solid?
- 9:34Speaker 6: You tried about it everything, Joe. I've been kicking around
- 9:37Speaker 6: an idea. It might work for you. I don't know.
- 9:40Speaker 7: Put on a phony shakedown for him might give you
- 9:43Speaker 7: a chance to show him how tough you're supposed to be.
- 9:45Speaker 6: What do you think?
- 9:47Speaker 5: Well, maybe I ought to help out. If we stage
- 9:50Speaker 5: it right.
- 9:50Speaker 6: When's your next meet with Red?
- 9:52Speaker 5: Seven o'clock tonight his hotel, room.
- 9:54Speaker 6: Two thirty one, then be honest or right?
- 9:56Speaker 5: How do you want to work it?
- 9:58Speaker 7: Oh, I'll get a couple of men from metro Vision,
- 10:00Speaker 7: have him in uniform. We better have him work in
- 10:02Speaker 7: a radio car. We're gonna have to have a good
- 10:05Speaker 7: reason for him breaking in on you. How about a
- 10:07Speaker 7: four or fifteen. Skipper Joe could go up to the room,
- 10:09Speaker 7: pick an argument with the Red and make noise a lot,
- 10:11Speaker 7: a lot talking.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Yeah, that sounds okay.
- 10:13Speaker 7: All right, both of the men in the radio car'll
- 10:16Speaker 7: be thoroughly briefed. You'll know what to do Friday. You
- 10:19Speaker 7: out to sell yourself. Act as tough as you think
- 10:21Speaker 7: you have to. All right, don't give it a try,
- 10:23Speaker 7: play it after the hilt. You give Red the least
- 10:25Speaker 7: idea of the shakedowns a phony, and we're washed up.
- 10:28Speaker 7: No phone, meet the off as soon as you can
- 10:30Speaker 7: the inside line. We'll be waiting for the call.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Right, It's just one more thing. Yeah, how about that
- 10:36Speaker 4: apartment house. Dan was gonna show you last night, the
- 10:38Speaker 4: place where Red's supposed to pick up the junk.
- 10:40Speaker 6: He pointed the place out. All right, it's gonna take
- 10:42Speaker 6: some checking.
- 10:43Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 10:43Speaker 9: Stan said? He drove read to this apartment house about
- 10:45Speaker 9: a dozen times. I always had to stay in the car.
- 10:48Speaker 9: They were Red one in alone. Didn't know which apartment
- 10:50Speaker 9: Red went to.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Can't we check him out him?
- 10:52Speaker 6: We got some men on it.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Now.
- 10:53Speaker 7: I'm gonna take a little time. Big layout, all right,
- 10:56Speaker 7: forty seven apartments, I.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Left dead and Captain Kearney and caught a street car
- 11:03Speaker 4: back to my hotel. I had some scrambled eggs, toasting
- 11:06Speaker 4: coffee and the grill next door, and then I went
- 11:08Speaker 4: up to my room and got.
- 11:09Speaker 5: A couple hours sleep.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Late that afternoon, I took in the show at a
- 11:12Speaker 4: newsreel theater, had a bite eat, and then headed out
- 11:15Speaker 4: for Red's hotel on West fifty fourth Street. I got
- 11:18Speaker 4: there a few minutes before seven. Red was waiting, apparently
- 11:22Speaker 4: failed to dig up any information on what had happened
- 11:24Speaker 4: to his two operators standing max. I accused him again
- 11:27Speaker 4: of trying to swindle me out of six thousand dollars.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I demanded the twenty ounces of heroin. Red had nothing to.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Offer, but apologies.
- 11:36Speaker 6: All right, all right, relax, Will you take it easy.
- 11:38Speaker 6: I'll work out something.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Take it easy. Nothing you do enough of that for
- 11:41Speaker 5: the both of us. You sit there and listen to
- 11:42Speaker 5: that radio.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Why don't you ge out and hustle up those two
- 11:44Speaker 4: mooches of yours and get my dough ball?
- 11:45Speaker 5: All right?
- 11:45Speaker 6: All right, you don't have the scream. I said, I'd
- 11:47Speaker 6: work something out.
- 11:48Speaker 5: All right, then start working. Get it the dough or
- 11:50Speaker 5: the white stuff. I gotta have it at the end
- 11:51Speaker 5: of the week.
- 11:51Speaker 6: What do you want to do? Have it all over
- 11:52Speaker 6: the hotel? Keep it down?
- 11:54Speaker 5: Why you take me for six g's and I'm supposed
- 11:56Speaker 5: to play it nice. Now, come off it, mister.
- 11:58Speaker 6: I didn't take it for six cheese.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Those two mules did, and you own them. Either you
- 12:01Speaker 5: square this.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Up or everybody in the business is going to know
- 12:03Speaker 4: about this.
- 12:04Speaker 6: It's got into you anyway. You've been boozing it up today.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Don't you worry about me. I'll take care of my end.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Real big operator, huh right, you had all the h
- 12:12Speaker 4: you handled everything.
- 12:13Speaker 5: A real big shot out.
- 12:15Speaker 6: I forget it.
- 12:15Speaker 5: Read the big wheel. He handles all kinds of deals
- 12:18Speaker 5: fifty cents to five dollars. After that, they get.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Too big for it. I said, forget it, Lindsay.
- 12:22Speaker 4: When this one gets around, they're gonna laugh you right
- 12:24Speaker 4: out of the business. You can go back to selling
- 12:26Speaker 4: razor blades and knock that radio off. I'm sick of
- 12:28Speaker 4: hearing that.
- 12:31Speaker 6: You got quiet down.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Do you think you're ready to handle it?
- 12:33Speaker 6: Do you?
- 12:33Speaker 11: I told you I'd try and work out something for you,
- 12:35Speaker 11: and I'm playing tough. It's gonna get your nothing.
- 12:36Speaker 6: You want to know that? What's it?
- 12:39Speaker 5: What's it sound like? Yeah? Who is it? Police officer
- 12:42Speaker 5: is helping up? What is this?
- 12:44Speaker 6: What do you got me?
- 12:45Speaker 2: What do you take it?
- 12:46Speaker 12: Easy?
- 12:46Speaker 6: You can't take guess right?
- 12:49Speaker 13: All right?
- 12:49Speaker 12: Up and up?
- 12:50Speaker 5: But I'm getting out of here. I'm not going to
- 12:51Speaker 5: any shake down your mind?
- 12:52Speaker 6: Hold it. I didn't mean you keep you waiting?
- 12:57Speaker 5: Come on in.
- 12:58Speaker 6: That's all the noise about up here. Nothing just saying
- 13:01Speaker 6: a friendly argument. That's it, that's your identification. Sure you'll
- 13:05Speaker 6: stay put? Yeah, Harry, better shake him down? Yeah right?
- 13:12Speaker 6: All right? Back against the wall. Come on, hands behind
- 13:15Speaker 6: your head, keep him here.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Today?
- 13:19Speaker 5: Grab the other one? All right? Good, both of them?
- 13:25Speaker 6: You crazy fool? Now what do we do?
- 13:27Speaker 4: I don't have to worry about the other one. He's
- 13:28Speaker 4: out cold. Take the gun off this one here, I'll
- 13:30Speaker 4: get his handcuffs.
- 13:32Speaker 5: Good.
- 13:33Speaker 6: Why'd you have to do it? Why did you have
- 13:34Speaker 6: to start something?
- 13:35Speaker 5: I can't afford a shakedown? You want to know that?
- 13:37Speaker 6: Better give it up both here. You're not going and
- 13:39Speaker 6: get away with it?
- 13:40Speaker 5: And shut up.
- 13:40Speaker 6: You won't go far.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Come on right, help me drag him over here. What
- 13:46Speaker 4: are you gonna do a bedpost here, like, get his
- 13:48Speaker 4: wrists around here.
- 13:49Speaker 6: That's it.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 13:54Speaker 6: Hold him ends here out of your mind? What do
- 13:56Speaker 6: we do with him now?
- 13:57Speaker 5: I'll worry about that. How's his partner doing? He's still
- 14:00Speaker 5: out all right? Now? Cop, let's have it. What's the
- 14:03Speaker 5: idea of the shakedown?
- 14:05Speaker 6: Well we pick you up again, you'll get the idea.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Come on, let's have it.
- 14:09Speaker 6: Why don't you lay off? It's not going to get
- 14:10Speaker 6: us out of this for.
- 14:11Speaker 5: A big dealer. You got a lot of chicken in
- 14:13Speaker 5: you now, look cop, give why they shake down?
- 14:16Speaker 6: You're wasting your time.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Maybe I can change your.
- 14:19Speaker 6: Mind, lindsay you're crazy. Put that gun away?
- 14:21Speaker 5: Now, come on, cop, talk who gave you the tip?
- 14:23Speaker 5: Gun away?
- 14:24Speaker 6: It's only going to get us in deeper.
- 14:25Speaker 4: I want some answers. These buzz didn't come along by accident.
- 14:27Speaker 4: There had to be a tip off.
- 14:28Speaker 6: How do you know?
- 14:29Speaker 11: You were talking up a storm in here, making a
- 14:30Speaker 11: lot of noise. Somebody in the hotel could have complained.
- 14:33Speaker 11: Come on, come on, get.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Out of here and leave the two of them behind
- 14:35Speaker 5: to identify us. That ain't gonna work.
- 14:36Speaker 6: It's got to what else can we do? We can
- 14:38Speaker 6: kill him out of your mind.
- 14:40Speaker 5: I can kill him right now. The probably wouldn't find
- 14:42Speaker 5: him in the morning.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Or you'll do it alone. Lindsay, I'm getting out.
- 14:44Speaker 5: We still got business to do.
- 14:45Speaker 11: I'm not looking for a murder right now. Come on,
- 14:47Speaker 11: get it up, Let's get out of here.
- 14:48Speaker 4: As soon as we leave, we're gonna have to start running.
- 14:50Speaker 4: I won't be good for more in a day.
- 14:51Speaker 5: In this time. What I would do about my deal?
- 14:53Speaker 6: Come on, we can talk about it later.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Come on, we can talk right now. You handed me
- 14:56Speaker 4: the stall long enough, I got twenty four hours left.
- 14:58Speaker 4: I want it settled.
- 14:58Speaker 6: Okay, okay, I'll talk to the big man.
- 15:00Speaker 5: I promise you. I want to have a meet with him.
- 15:03Speaker 5: I don't know you listen at six.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Grand By was a dropping the bucket. I want to
- 15:06Speaker 4: buy more. If the big guy's ready, saw.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Am you got the money?
- 15:09Speaker 5: I got it cash? How about the meat? How about it? Red?
- 15:14Speaker 6: K okay, okay, I'll set it up.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Red got his things together and we took the rear
- 15:22Speaker 4: fire escape that led down to a service alley behind
- 15:25Speaker 4: the hotel. Before the two of us separated, we agreed
- 15:28Speaker 4: that Red would call me at my hotel at ten
- 15:30Speaker 4: o'clock the following morning. I wasn't altogether sure, but it
- 15:34Speaker 4: seemed as though the act I'd put on at the
- 15:35Speaker 4: phony shakedown it impressed Red quite a bit. Before I
- 15:39Speaker 4: went back to my hotel, I called Ed Jacobs and
- 15:42Speaker 4: Captain Kearney and briefed them on the developments. At ten
- 15:45Speaker 4: o'clock the next morning, I was waiting for the phone
- 15:47Speaker 4: in my hotel room.
- 15:48Speaker 5: At ten point fifteen, Red call, I.
- 15:50Speaker 6: Talk to the big Man this morning.
- 15:52Speaker 10: I told him what you wanted.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Yeah, what's the answer.
- 15:54Speaker 2: You got to be a fastye Oka car.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Well, I'm ready, is he?
- 15:57Speaker 6: I think?
- 15:58Speaker 5: So? Talk all right? What about the meat? I'll take
- 16:02Speaker 5: it to it when.
- 16:15Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 16:19Speaker 3: force in action.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Tuesday August sixteenth, ten thirty three am. As soon as
- 16:32Speaker 4: I got word from Red about the meat he'd set
- 16:34Speaker 4: up for me with a big man, I called Captain
- 16:36Speaker 4: Kearney on the inside line and briefed him on the
- 16:38Speaker 4: way things stood. He said he'd have three teams of
- 16:41Speaker 4: men ready to tail me and cover the meat. They'd
- 16:44Speaker 4: work alternately in three way radio cars in order to
- 16:47Speaker 4: reduce the risk of discovery. To the minimum. He also
- 16:50Speaker 4: told me the check of tenants was continuing at the
- 16:53Speaker 4: East Hollywood apartment house where Red apparently was picking up
- 16:55Speaker 4: his supply of heroin for distribution. So far, the detail
- 16:59Speaker 4: of man assigned to the job had failed to uncover
- 17:02Speaker 4: any definite leads.
- 17:03Speaker 5: At eight minutes.
- 17:04Speaker 4: Past eight o'clock that night, Red picked me up at
- 17:06Speaker 4: my hotel and together we drove out along Alhambra Avenue.
- 17:10Speaker 4: We parked alongside the edge of a private golf course
- 17:13Speaker 4: just north of the Ocean Highway.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Smoke, Okay, thanks, gotta mention it.
- 17:24Speaker 5: Yeah nice, Well what about it? We've been here fifteen
- 17:35Speaker 5: minutes already, a lot.
- 17:36Speaker 6: Of sign feels like a sybost doesn't like to hurry things.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Yeah, well, maybe he ought to get with it relaxed.
- 17:48Speaker 4: So we waited nine thirty, ten o'clock, ten thirty eleven,
- 17:54Speaker 4: still no sign of the big man. Eleven thirty eleven,
- 17:58Speaker 4: forty five, no sign? What time he got, lindsay, ten
- 18:05Speaker 4: minutes to midnight? And you got any ideas?
- 18:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess I can tell you now.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Well, you make this one real good with you. It's
- 18:13Speaker 5: been a long wait.
- 18:14Speaker 6: Boss wants to make sure about you. That's all. He's
- 18:16Speaker 6: checking his context. Where you said you operate up around Fresno?
- 18:19Speaker 6: Isn't that right?
- 18:20Speaker 5: All right? So he's checking on me. What's he want
- 18:21Speaker 5: of a blood sample?
- 18:22Speaker 6: He's careful. He wants to make sure it didn't show.
- 18:25Speaker 6: This is what he told me to tell you.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Yeah, if you're cleared all.
- 18:28Speaker 6: Around with his contacts and meets set for tomorrow afternoon
- 18:30Speaker 6: where I'll get to it. That deal to this. You
- 18:34Speaker 6: said you wanted a big buy. The boss has got it.
- 18:36Speaker 5: How much?
- 18:36Speaker 6: Two kilos, same good stuff you sampled, high grade Mexican.
- 18:40Speaker 6: You can get it at ten grand akilo.
- 18:42Speaker 5: Well, it's not bad if it's good quality. What's the breakdown?
- 18:44Speaker 6: It's forty percent. You're getting a fat discount, you know that.
- 18:47Speaker 4: Well, that depends two kilos ten GI's apiece, twenty thousand bucks.
- 18:51Speaker 6: You've got education carry.
- 18:53Speaker 4: It's a lot of scratch to get together in a hurry.
- 18:55Speaker 4: You got a whole day, No, don't no jump, All right,
- 18:58Speaker 4: I'll get it. Where's the meat up by South Pasadena.
- 19:01Speaker 4: They're holding a big flower show in the neighborhood. You'll
- 19:03Speaker 4: meet him there. Contact me for the time.
- 19:07Speaker 5: When will it be? When do I meet him?
- 19:08Speaker 6: When you got the twenty thousand.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Eleven fifteen PM, Red drove me back downtown and dropped
- 19:16Speaker 4: me off at Fourth and Maine. Before we separated, he
- 19:19Speaker 4: told me he'd call me early the following afternoon regarding
- 19:22Speaker 4: the time of the meet with a Big Man, providing
- 19:25Speaker 4: I had the twenty thousand dollars for the narcotics buy.
- 19:29Speaker 4: One am, after stopping off at a cafeteria and then
- 19:32Speaker 4: a coffee counter to make sure I wasn't being tailed,
- 19:34Speaker 4: I got to a public telephone.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Put in a call to Captain Kearney South.
- 19:37Speaker 7: Pasadena Flowers Show sometime tomorrow afternoon there.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, that's it, Ken, all right, we'll cover it
- 19:42Speaker 5: all the way. Well, how about the money? What do
- 19:45Speaker 5: you think he got a little with you, haven't you? Well? Little? Yeah?
- 19:47Speaker 7: Okay, fake it the best way, you know how.
- 19:50Speaker 2: We'll be a right.
- 19:51Speaker 6: So as you make sure the guy has the junk with.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Him past the signal, we'll move in right.
- 19:55Speaker 7: Something else, You get any lead at all on the
- 19:57Speaker 7: big man tonight?
- 19:58Speaker 5: No? Nothing? How about you a piece of luck?
- 20:00Speaker 7: I think we got him spotted.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Before he hung up, Captain Kearney told me that the
- 20:08Speaker 4: careful screening of tenants in the East Hollywood apartment house
- 20:11Speaker 4: pointed out to them by Stan had netted a couple
- 20:13Speaker 4: of prime suspects. They were an elderly couple, a mister
- 20:16Speaker 4: and missus Thomas Leslie. Besides the fact that he had
- 20:20Speaker 4: a narcotics record in the East, mister Leslie operated a
- 20:22Speaker 4: second hand bookstore on Beverly Boulevard, which apparently was being
- 20:25Speaker 4: visited often by known narcotics peddlers. Early the following afternoon,
- 20:30Speaker 4: Red called me at my hotel room and I told
- 20:32Speaker 4: him I had the twenty thousand dollars for the buye.
- 20:35Speaker 5: He picked me up at one forty five pm.
- 20:38Speaker 4: I flashed a stack of money, containing mostly one dollar bills,
- 20:41Speaker 4: and he seemed satisfied. He drove me out to the
- 20:44Speaker 4: site of the flower show in South Pasadena, a large
- 20:47Speaker 4: glass domed conservatory just off the Royosco Freeway.
- 20:53Speaker 10: I said, say, yeah, sure, nice flies.
- 21:03Speaker 6: Huh, it's beautiful.
- 21:06Speaker 4: How many times we're gonna have to cover this route?
- 21:08Speaker 4: I've seen everything twice already.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Won be long a couple of minutes, Oh this way,
- 21:12Speaker 6: come on? Yeah, the ship grat.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Look, I don't get any of this. If we got business,
- 21:25Speaker 4: why can't it be in private. This is your big
- 21:27Speaker 4: man's idea of a joke.
- 21:29Speaker 6: It's protection. Lindsay, he's got to be careful. I guess
- 21:31Speaker 6: you figure this is the last place they look for.
- 21:35Speaker 4: We'll make another round of this place. We'll stand out
- 21:37Speaker 4: like a sore thumb.
- 21:38Speaker 6: I'll relax. You'll make you buy. Coming up right now, right,
- 21:41Speaker 6: come on following me, Tom, What do you say?
- 21:53Speaker 12: Oh, oh you're in.
- 21:55Speaker 14: What do you think of my glady old antrees? Those
- 21:57Speaker 14: up there? When you say the beauties?
- 22:00Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that real great time.
- 22:02Speaker 14: Took me three and a half years to get blooms
- 22:04Speaker 14: like that South African species, you know, the Chilsea type.
- 22:07Speaker 14: Raised them bright in the little greenhouse back of that place,
- 22:10Speaker 14: right you see the scarlets and the whites. That was
- 22:13Speaker 14: the mine.
- 22:14Speaker 6: Yeah, ah, Tom, like you have you meet that friend
- 22:17Speaker 6: of mine? Lindsay, it's just Tom.
- 22:20Speaker 12: How do you do? What do you think of my entries?
- 22:22Speaker 12: Raised every one of them from seeds? Lindsay.
- 22:25Speaker 14: They take a lot of care. Yeah, they're all right,
- 22:29Speaker 14: plenty of care, especially those the South African type. They
- 22:33Speaker 14: take a good stiff sandy loam, quality fertilizer, just the
- 22:36Speaker 14: right kind of heat and water, takes a lot of work.
- 22:39Speaker 5: Problem. Yeah, the guy haven't got too much time to spend.
- 22:44Speaker 5: Maybe we better talk outside.
- 22:45Speaker 14: Yes, it takes quite a lot of work. Beautiful blooms.
- 22:49Speaker 14: You have all the money within all of it.
- 22:51Speaker 5: We got two kilos.
- 22:52Speaker 12: That's correct. You can go out the sideway.
- 22:55Speaker 14: They read you followed behind and keep an eye open
- 22:58Speaker 14: right this way. Sorry for the delay, it's necessary sometimes. Yeah,
- 23:09Speaker 14: you came out and read your double checked you weren't followed.
- 23:12Speaker 5: I double checked. I've been doing business longer and red.
- 23:15Speaker 6: Mm.
- 23:16Speaker 12: Maybe we can make it a permanent tie.
- 23:19Speaker 6: Not here.
- 23:25Speaker 12: My cars this way?
- 23:28Speaker 5: You always make deals in the open public places.
- 23:31Speaker 14: Always it hazards advantages you sure this.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Is the hi sampled now? I don't want another phony buy.
- 23:37Speaker 14: It's no Maybe can be sure. Then here's a car.
- 23:43Speaker 14: Well the money?
- 23:45Speaker 5: Will you show me the stuff? Red nose? I got
- 23:47Speaker 5: the money you read?
- 23:51Speaker 14: Yeah, Tim, the money you saw it before you brought
- 23:54Speaker 14: him here. Yeah, showed it to me right here in
- 23:57Speaker 14: my pocket. Have a look if you want. Now, come on,
- 24:01Speaker 14: I can't afford to camp on this thing. All right,
- 24:04Speaker 14: people look out Red all right in the car wend
- 24:16Speaker 14: there under the deskboard. Here I always find. That's the
- 24:20Speaker 14: best place.
- 24:23Speaker 12: You have a car.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Of course, I go back with Red.
- 24:26Speaker 12: All right, they are two kilos, not the money.
- 24:31Speaker 5: What about breaking the package? Oh, I know it's not
- 24:33Speaker 5: more powdered sugar.
- 24:34Speaker 12: Of course it's not. Wait a minute, what is this
- 24:37Speaker 12: those men coming up.
- 24:38Speaker 6: To the car.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Takety is he missing?
- 24:40Speaker 12: I'm getting out of here?
- 24:43Speaker 6: In here, all right, Joe, I got him, pull him in.
- 24:47Speaker 5: I'll shake him down.
- 24:49Speaker 6: We got the other one, Red, no trouble.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Good, Okay, he's called Red.
- 24:54Speaker 12: It's stupid Red. I should have known. I should have know.
- 24:56Speaker 6: Joe, good work stuff all day.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Yeah, two kilos.
- 25:00Speaker 6: Want us to take him back in our car, skipper?
- 25:02Speaker 6: All right, I'll take in the other one. Meet you
- 25:04Speaker 6: at the parking lot gate. We'll folly in.
- 25:06Speaker 5: All right, all right, mister, that's why.
- 25:08Speaker 14: Look, if you ask you a favor, I won't take
- 25:10Speaker 14: a minute. Yeah, let me call my wife. I want
- 25:14Speaker 14: to let her know what's happened. I wanted to come
- 25:16Speaker 14: out here and get my flowers. I got some valuable
- 25:19Speaker 14: plants in that show.
- 25:20Speaker 6: I'll be taken care of. Your wife couldn't make it anyway.
- 25:23Speaker 6: She was picked up an hour ago.
- 25:24Speaker 14: Oh, couldn't be. What's gonna happen? Every dollar I own,
- 25:29Speaker 14: all my merchandise, took care of the best quality, all
- 25:33Speaker 14: of it.
- 25:33Speaker 5: We'll take care of that. Come on, let's go.
- 25:35Speaker 12: Well, I got those beautiful plants. You can do that
- 25:39Speaker 12: much for me.
- 25:40Speaker 14: Let me go back and get my flowers their prize, Glady, ALUs,
- 25:44Speaker 14: It won't hurt anything.
- 25:47Speaker 12: Just let me take some with me. Just a feudil
- 25:49Speaker 12: I get back?
- 25:50Speaker 5: Why I bother? They won't last that lot.
- 26:00Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:04Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:06Speaker 3: On December fourth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
- 26:09Speaker 3: eighty four, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
- 26:12Speaker 3: In a moment the results of that trial, Thomas Leslie
- 26:23Speaker 3: and William red Forrester were filed on in the District
- 26:26Speaker 3: Attorney's office for violation of the State Health and Safety
- 26:29Speaker 3: Code Section eleven thousand, five hundred. Both men were tried
- 26:33Speaker 3: in Superior Court and found guilty of the charge. The
- 26:36Speaker 3: violation carries a penalty of imprisonment in the state penitentiary
- 26:40Speaker 3: for not less than five nor more than ten years.
- 26:44Speaker 3: Because of their co operation in the investigation and apprehension
- 26:47Speaker 3: of the narcotics gang ring leaders Stan Parrish and Max
- 26:51Speaker 3: Higby were given one year sentences in the County jail
- 26:54Speaker 3: with five years probation. You have just heard Dragnett, a
- 27:07Speaker 3: series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice comes
- 27:11Speaker 3: from the Office of Chief of Police wh Parker, Los
- 27:13Speaker 3: Angeles Police Department. Heard Tonight where Barney Phillips and Stacy Harris.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Script by Jim Mosey, music by Walter Schumann, Hal Givney speaking.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Next, It's David Harding and Counterspy on NBC.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Welcome Back, Okay, a great conclusion to this episode. I
- 27:47Speaker 1: really found this fascinating. And even though Friday's a policeman,
- 27:54Speaker 1: his play is as daring as the most out rageous
- 28:00Speaker 1: con scheme. And he did thoroughly Conrad. That's why Red
- 28:07Speaker 1: didn't dig deep into the money. He was sold on
- 28:11Speaker 1: Friday being this big time drug operator. And of course
- 28:15Speaker 1: the takedown at the apartment was just icing on the cake.
- 28:21Speaker 5: Oh.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I will say, I do feel bad for those guys
- 28:24Speaker 1: for Metro Division because it sounds like they got worked
- 28:28Speaker 1: over because Red checked one of them and confirmed that
- 28:32Speaker 1: they weren't conscious. So I hope for Friday's case, give
- 28:37Speaker 1: them a concussion was within the realm of showing yourself
- 28:42Speaker 1: as tough as you needed to. I would be horrible
- 28:46Speaker 1: at an assignment like that, and I would get really
- 28:49Speaker 1: nervous when he suggested killing us. I'd be like, does
- 28:52Speaker 1: he need to show himself that tough? But again, I
- 28:55Speaker 1: think Friday had a sense of who Red was and
- 28:59Speaker 1: how we approached things, and his general caution, and that
- 29:04Speaker 1: the last thing in the world Red was going to
- 29:06Speaker 1: want would be for him to kill two police officers
- 29:11Speaker 1: in his hotel room, because if reded called his bluff,
- 29:16Speaker 1: that would have been problematic. And I love the Flower
- 29:20Speaker 1: Show as the setting for the drug boss. Ye not
- 29:24Speaker 1: something you'd expect, but really does work well. And it
- 29:27Speaker 1: also adds some depth to the mister Big of the
- 29:31Speaker 1: story and a sign that at least in the early
- 29:34Speaker 1: nineteen fifties, drug dealers were not always who you'd expect now.
- 29:39Speaker 1: The earlier dialogue with the suspect that they captured and
- 29:44Speaker 1: who was cooperating is somewhat noteworthy, and I looked it
- 29:49Speaker 1: up when they were suggesting that he quit and he
- 29:52Speaker 1: asked how long he was asked, how bad are you hooked?
- 29:57Speaker 1: And he said, oh, not bad. I'm just chippy with it,
- 30:01Speaker 1: not more than a cappa day, which is a good
- 30:04Speaker 1: piece of writing because drug users often distinguish themselves from
- 30:10Speaker 1: occasional users who were called chippy or chippers and junkies.
- 30:19Speaker 1: But as the dialogue says, it's also kind of the
- 30:22Speaker 1: nature of addiction to minimize the problem. He wasn't hooked
- 30:27Speaker 1: that bad, and he used no more than a cap
- 30:32Speaker 1: of day. That's actually a pretty substantial amount for daily consumption.
- 30:37Speaker 1: And keep in mind that we've established through this episode
- 30:41Speaker 1: that this is Heroin with purity of more than forty percent,
- 30:46Speaker 1: which was a fairly high grade of junk for that era. Well,
- 30:52Speaker 1: now we turn to listener comments and we start on Spotify.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Some comments regarding the Big Sorrow, Peter Rights Adam. When
- 31:00Speaker 1: you mentioned last week that it was the last episode
- 31:03Speaker 1: featuring Barton Yarborough, I assumed that he left to pursue
- 31:06Speaker 1: another role on another program. When I learned today that
- 31:09Speaker 1: he had died of a heart attack, I was genuinely shocked,
- 31:12Speaker 1: so much so that I had to listen to the
- 31:14Speaker 1: episode twice to make sure that I heard it right.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I will miss hearing his voice. Can you recommend other
- 31:20Speaker 1: programs that he appeared in that I can listen to well,
- 31:24Speaker 1: I can talk about what he worked in, but listening
- 31:29Speaker 1: can be a bit of a challenge. Barton Yarborough's most
- 31:33Speaker 1: famous radio role among his contemporaries was as Clifford Barber
- 31:40Speaker 1: on the soap opera One Man's Family. He began playing
- 31:44Speaker 1: the role in nineteen thirty two and carried on to
- 31:49Speaker 1: his death. Like many soap operas, there are a lot
- 31:55Speaker 1: of missing episodes, more than it's actually around ninety percent
- 32:00Speaker 1: of One Man's Family is missing, and of course the
- 32:03Speaker 1: nature of soap operas and the fact that you have
- 32:06Speaker 1: this big family and only fifteen minutes a day and
- 32:12Speaker 1: is a situation where you will have characters on and
- 32:15Speaker 1: off the program. Now, there is a fairly substantial storyline
- 32:21Speaker 1: where he takes a major role starting in January of
- 32:27Speaker 1: nineteen fifty one, with most of that month's episodes in circulation,
- 32:33Speaker 1: though no promise that you get to the end of
- 32:35Speaker 1: the storyline. Yarborough also I Love a Mystery, in which
- 32:42Speaker 1: he played the role of Doc Long as one of
- 32:46Speaker 1: three intrepid mystery solving adventurers. This actually led to three
- 32:53Speaker 1: different spinoff movies in which Yarborough appeared on screen. Sadly,
- 32:59Speaker 1: the only complete I Love a Mystery serials are from
- 33:04Speaker 1: a nineteen forty nine revival of the series. However, you
- 33:09Speaker 1: can hear Bart and Yarborough playing doc in the sequel
- 33:14Speaker 1: series to the original I Loved Mystery, I Love Adventure.
- 33:18Speaker 1: He's also in Adventures by Morse again, another Carlton Moose series.
- 33:24Speaker 1: He also starred in the short lived and sadly well
- 33:30Speaker 1: circulated Western Hawk Larrabee, and he played a supporting role
- 33:35Speaker 1: in the Elliott Lewis series Hawk Durango, another Western. In
- 33:41Speaker 1: addition to that, Barbara did a pilot for a series
- 33:49Speaker 1: with Jack Webb and Elliott Lewis called Three for Adventure.
- 33:54Speaker 1: As I think about that series, and I don't think
- 33:56Speaker 1: I said it at the time, I played that as
- 34:00Speaker 1: part of our Jack Webb centennial celebration back in twenty twenty,
- 34:06Speaker 1: that pilot was really an attempt to kind of rip
- 34:10Speaker 1: off the Morse Adventure format. I think I might have
- 34:17Speaker 1: an Easter break coming up and I might go ahead
- 34:20Speaker 1: and play that episode on The Great Adventurers for our encore.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Then beyond that, though Yarborough was a very active character actor.
- 34:31Speaker 1: He was in a lot of different productions. He was
- 34:37Speaker 1: on Escape often, he did quite a few episodes of
- 34:41Speaker 1: Screen Director's Playhouse, and he would be in everything from
- 34:47Speaker 1: sitcoms to anthology shows, to Other Place and detective programs.
- 34:55Speaker 1: Even though this is the last of Ben Romero, we'll
- 34:59Speaker 1: run into him in quite a few other guyses. As
- 35:05Speaker 1: our full time radio listening continues, Doctor Who Done It? Riots,
- 35:09Speaker 1: I can't help but feel Jack's Webb's speech at the
- 35:11Speaker 1: closing was cut short by the music. It would be
- 35:14Speaker 1: a tough one to get through.
- 35:15Speaker 13: Well.
- 35:16Speaker 1: In that case, that all up to That is our
- 35:19Speaker 1: editing there. Want to include some of the remarks about
- 35:26Speaker 1: the season without also throwing in the fatima ad, which
- 35:31Speaker 1: is particularly important now that the podcast is actually broadcast
- 35:40Speaker 1: over the air every now and again over on Patreon.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Emma's Riots. This was an extraordinary episode, unlike any other
- 35:48Speaker 1: in either radio or television that I remember. Clearly, Jack
- 35:51Speaker 1: Webb was devastated by Yarborough's death. They were professional and
- 35:56Speaker 1: personal friends, and I'm sure Web couldn't imagine anyone taking
- 35:59Speaker 1: the roll on because yard Borough was there. From the beginning,
- 36:03Speaker 1: The episode winds up to be fairly Bland as if
- 36:07Speaker 1: to emphasize the sarity of the first ten minutes. Well,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I definitely agree that Webb was devastated and there really
- 36:17Speaker 1: was no contingency plan. And web was not someone who
- 36:24Speaker 1: was close with a lot of people, but those that
- 36:27Speaker 1: he was close with it was genuine, and I think
- 36:34Speaker 1: it definitely was a blow because this is how the
- 36:38Speaker 1: series had been built, and what to do next was
- 36:43Speaker 1: a big question. I think that the smartest thing they
- 36:46Speaker 1: did is really something that a lot of productions would
- 36:51Speaker 1: be nervous with. I gave himself time. This period of
- 36:57Speaker 1: temporary partners would continue for a very long time, relatively
- 37:05Speaker 1: and essentially for the entire rest of the first season
- 37:09Speaker 1: on television after the two episodes which had been filmed,
- 37:12Speaker 1: which gave viewers a bit more visual continuity. But Webb
- 37:17Speaker 1: took his time and got a dynamic that will not
- 37:21Speaker 1: the same as what he had before, was right for
- 37:24Speaker 1: the show in a direction that would be very successful
- 37:28Speaker 1: in terms of the quality. I don't think making it
- 37:33Speaker 1: less interesting was a decision as much as it really
- 37:37Speaker 1: was a necessity because you only have so much time
- 37:42Speaker 1: in an episode, and if you do take ten minutes
- 37:46Speaker 1: of the episode to deal with this major event. You
- 37:52Speaker 1: just don't have time for the same quality of story
- 37:56Speaker 1: and involved investigation, and you've got to tell something that's
- 38:00Speaker 1: a bit simpler. But at the end of the day,
- 38:03Speaker 1: what really mattered there were the emotional stakes. For one,
- 38:07Speaker 1: I mean, just like Joe Friday, most of us were
- 38:10Speaker 1: not emotionally invested in the case as much as we
- 38:15Speaker 1: were with Ben's death, Brain's Benton rights on Instagram. What
- 38:20Speaker 1: a good way to honor Ben Romero in the show
- 38:22Speaker 1: and in real life. Jack Webb picked good replacement partners,
- 38:27Speaker 1: but Romero is my favorite. Too bad we didn't get
- 38:29Speaker 1: to see him in the TV show. Well, we actually did,
- 38:33Speaker 1: but very very briefly. Two episodes had been filmed when
- 38:38Speaker 1: he passed away. Suddenly those episodes are The Human Bomb
- 38:42Speaker 1: and The Big Actor. Now, his part in the Big
- 38:46Speaker 1: Actor is not all that large, but in the Human
- 38:50Speaker 1: Bomb that is. And I said that when we released
- 38:54Speaker 1: the episode on video theater last year, that was a
- 38:58Speaker 1: role that really only Ben Romero could fulfill. And it
- 39:03Speaker 1: is such a good episode. Of course, two episodes, it's
- 39:07Speaker 1: not even one percent of the nineteen fifties TV series,
- 39:11Speaker 1: But thankfully both of those are in circulation. We did
- 39:16Speaker 1: them on a public domain video theater, and of course
- 39:18Speaker 1: you can find those online. And then Brian writes, yes,
- 39:22Speaker 1: this one was different. Jack Web did things his way,
- 39:25Speaker 1: as you say in closing, and in this case it
- 39:28Speaker 1: gave us a somber, respectful reflection. Then we go over
- 39:32Speaker 1: to YouTube, where we have some comments regarding the Big Overtime.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Jeffrey raised some good questions about the practicality of some
- 39:41Speaker 1: of the measures poor trade, which in terms of quickly
- 39:46Speaker 1: identifying the bills, and I kind of talked about that
- 39:49Speaker 1: last week, but appreciate the comment, though I don't have
- 39:53Speaker 1: anything additional to add, but really to appreciate it because,
- 39:58Speaker 1: particularly on YouTube, because it helps us grow so much.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Sasoff says regarding my proposed Martian Manhunter series, I'm thinking
- 40:09Speaker 1: that the Martian Manhunter should star Wolson and Bill Bixby,
- 40:15Speaker 1: And of course that is a reference to the TV
- 40:19Speaker 1: program My Favorite Marshan, which aired from nineteen sixty three
- 40:23Speaker 1: to nineteen sixty six. Well, I was imagining this production
- 40:28Speaker 1: being done during the golden age of radio. Bixby didn't
- 40:32Speaker 1: work in radio. He was a little too young by
- 40:36Speaker 1: the time he got into acting. Radio drama was fading,
- 40:40Speaker 1: with the line shares of rules in Hollywood going to
- 40:45Speaker 1: already established actors. Ray Woolston was of the age where
- 40:52Speaker 1: he could have had quite a radio career, but he didn't.
- 40:56Speaker 1: He was really a stage actor until late fifties. The
- 41:02Speaker 1: only radio role he had we actually played a few
- 41:07Speaker 1: years back when we played an episode of The warth
- 41:12Speaker 1: Hour that was a tribute to Tony Barrett. It also
- 41:16Speaker 1: featured him reprising the role from his Broadway play, So
- 41:21Speaker 1: long story short or long story somewhat shorter. I would
- 41:27Speaker 1: say that Ray Wilson was a fine actor, but just
- 41:31Speaker 1: not what we had in mind for the part, but
- 41:33Speaker 1: appreciate the suggestion. Now it's time to thank our Patreon
- 41:37Speaker 1: supporter of the day, and I want to thank Jesse,

- 42:08Speaker 1: yours truly. Johnny, it all or where.
- 42:11Speaker 13: The police found any actual clues to work on?
- 42:13Speaker 14: Well, no, that's where you're wrong, said, it's Sergeant Drumming.
- 42:16Speaker 15: That's right, Danny boy.
- 42:18Speaker 13: Hi second, so they drag you in on this, Yeah,
- 42:21Speaker 13: Fred's all You know how it is drumming. When the
- 42:23Speaker 13: police can't get anywhere, you call in the experts.
- 42:26Speaker 6: Oh and I thought you were a friend of mine.
- 42:27Speaker 5: Ms.
- 42:28Speaker 13: Pullman who said that Bill was wrong Sageant when he
- 42:31Speaker 13: told me your boy is havn't found any clues to
- 42:33Speaker 13: who did this job and knocked off Jimson.
- 42:35Speaker 6: Cooley knocked him off? Huh know what's that mean?
- 42:39Speaker 15: One of the boys picked up a drunk last night
- 42:41Speaker 15: right in this neighborhood. Yeah, late this morning, when he
- 42:44Speaker 15: sobered up enough, we sent him home for a little while.
- 42:46Speaker 15: Ago he comes budging back the headquarters. Seems he suddenly
- 42:49Speaker 15: remembered something he saw around here last night.
- 42:51Speaker 6: Come on, Sageant. We must have been around two or
- 42:54Speaker 6: three am. That's when we figured the robbery.
- 42:56Speaker 12: Could and the murder of Jimson Cooley.
- 42:58Speaker 5: Yeah, please get to the point drumming.
- 43:01Speaker 15: Well, he was holding up that building across the street,
- 43:03Speaker 15: mining his own business and his bottle, when all of
- 43:05Speaker 15: a sudden he saw a car come round from in
- 43:07Speaker 15: the back of this building and heading north on the.
- 43:09Speaker 6: Trail, maybe two of them.
- 43:11Speaker 15: He wasn't sure any I don't want he noticed was
- 43:13Speaker 15: a little pickup truck.
- 43:14Speaker 13: But in his condition, I suppose he didn't get a.
- 43:16Speaker 15: License mwhere he didn't need to, Johnny, because he recognized
- 43:19Speaker 15: that truck. Oh yes, sir, And he said it was
- 43:22Speaker 15: all loaded down with something with an old piece of
- 43:24Speaker 15: canvas stretched.
- 43:25Speaker 12: Over the step that was stolen from me.
- 43:27Speaker 13: Maybe you say he recognized that pickup Whose was it?
- 43:30Speaker 15: Yeah, Johnny, was that old nineteen thirty model? He used
- 43:33Speaker 15: a whole shrimping. Why Who's that's right?
- 43:36Speaker 3: That's right? Was that old truck in?
- 43:38Speaker 6: Jimson Dooley.
- 43:38Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime.
