Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave.
- 0:06Every talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf, presents it to the other, and discusses it at length.
- 0:18This week we've got coming off of my shelf, 1992 Batman
- 0:22Returns, directed by Tim Burton, written by Daniel Waters,
- 0:26starring Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Michelle Pfeiffer.
- 0:29That's the main. Three, That's the big three.
- 0:31The Bat, the Cat and the Penguin was the tagline for this.
- 0:35Movie. I think you're selling someone a
- 0:36little short there, a guy from Denver, Christopher Walken.
- 0:40Oh yeah, sure. Things to do in Denver.
- 0:41Before things to do in Denver. That's absolutely.
- 0:43Christopher Walken could be one of my favorite characters in
- 0:47this whole movie, but wow. OK, we'll get there.
- 0:49Geez, We'll get there. David, Welcome back to the
- 0:52couch. Welcome.
- 0:53Thank you, show. Thank you, special guest star
- 0:55David. Yes, It's like Heather Locklear,
- 0:58my friends. Exactly.
- 1:00I thought we might add that to your contractually.
- 1:03You need that. I think that you've been adding
- 1:04that window in the renewal. You.
- 1:07Yeah. I'm like Kelsey Grammar after
- 1:09Season 4 and. Cheers.
- 1:11Just add him in. That's right.
- 1:12Yeah. He's here to stay here for about
- 1:1420 more years. We're committed to this guy.
- 1:17Alright, well so here what brings you.
- 1:21What brings me here, you might ask?
- 1:23Well, just thought I'd stop by, see how you're doing.
- 1:25Just. Conveniently, we're recording
- 1:27this podcast tonight exactly, so I appreciate you joining.
- 1:30Well luckily I always keep my laptop and my notes in my car.
- 1:35How's it going this week? Certainly better than me, it
- 1:37seems. And how was your first
- 1:38impressions on this movie? I assume first impressions
- 1:40because you did not particularly care for the first Batman
- 1:43experience. I did not, actually.
- 1:46That's true. Yeah, Even afterwards I'm like,
- 1:49I think I was even like too easy.
- 1:51On Marshawn, but I would say. Not in the episode.
- 1:54Oh, OK. No, if we were to rerecord.
- 1:56That in the archives. If I, if we rerecorded that,
- 1:58which we might do because I was back in the early years, full
- 2:03state of the, the audio, audio equipment and what have you.
- 2:06And I thought about it afterwards.
- 2:08Like I don't think Batman from 89 is a very good movie.
- 2:12You made that point, I think, clear, but you think it's going
- 2:15to come out a little harsher? Than I think I think it would.
- 2:17I think I think it's mass. This is why we're not going
- 2:20back. I guess not, but yeah, masked by
- 2:24the visuals and Tim Burtons inarguable creativity and
- 2:28ability to build a world that I'm not going to argue.
- 2:31No, I appreciate you using the word inarguable.
- 2:33I'm impressed. Thank you, I've been reading
- 2:36books in my spare time. I would consider this my first
- 2:40watch. Although I'm sure I watched it
- 2:44many sure many years ago, but when I'm watching it now I'm
- 2:48like I don't remember anything. So I think we can qualify it as
- 2:52a first watch. That's fair.
- 2:54And seconds of course. Of course.
- 2:57Lots of notes to pick apart this movie.
- 3:00Just kidding. I definitely felt different
- 3:03about this movie versus the 1st. Exciting.
- 3:07Well, maybe it's worse. Fair, fair.
- 3:10I mean, IMDb says this was just a little bit underneath the the
- 3:14original. Sure, we're talking 7.5 to a 7.1
- 3:18means nothing means nothing. What does this movie be?
- 3:22An Apple .6 to a pomegranate .4 fruit.
- 3:28That's how little it matters. So.
- 3:30Arbitrary was I can tell fruit matters nothing to you, that's
- 3:33for sure. More of a poutine kind of guy
- 3:37from from the footage over. Here, that's why I will never go
- 3:40to YouTube. This headshots, 2 headshots even
- 3:44then maybe 4 heads yeah, yeah, I mean questionable too.
- 3:48When I started eating the grilled cheeses and the
- 3:50poutines, it goes to my neck, so we'd have to have it like nose
- 3:54up that's. Just our eyes.
- 3:56Well, basically we're recorded bat cowls.
- 3:58We'll have the Batman mask. Kirby is bad as a close up of
- 4:02the Penguin. That's very true.
- 4:04Could be worse. Could have blood coming from our
- 4:06noses. Phillip.
- 4:07Please give me three things, OK? I want to know why this movie?
- 4:12Yeah, I want to know why this movie now.
- 4:15And I want to know a little bit of your history of it.
- 4:19And that's about it. That's OK, that's true.
- 4:22We nailed. It could I guess that one of
- 4:23them to the wine now though, please, just if you don't mind,
- 4:26indulge me please. The production manager of this
- 4:29film is Ian Bryce. Is it the Bryce you want to go
- 4:34try Bryce? We had no way out with the Bryce
- 4:37sneakers with a Brice and off camera.
- 4:40In this case, of course, we have Ian.
- 4:42Bryson going below the line here.
- 4:44I did dig deep. I didn't see it till the very
- 4:46end of the movie. Going through the credits, I'm
- 4:48like, oh, another bride, another price.
- 4:49Thought that was funny. But in all seriousness, Phil,
- 4:53you could just for a moment, please.
- 4:55Tell me, you know, in this case there are two things, three
- 4:59things maybe that are working in its favor.
- 5:01The 1st is I wanted to revisit Batman because I love this
- 5:04series. The second is that recently I
- 5:09had gone to a orchestral evening of song I heard dedicated to the
- 5:15music of Danny Elfman. And going through all of those
- 5:18scores and obviously thinking about the Tim Burton movies that
- 5:21most of them are culled from, Yes, got me thinking about that
- 5:24collaboration and wanting to revisit one of those movies,
- 5:28whatever it was. I thought about Edward
- 5:30Scissorhands. Uh huh.
- 5:31Yeah, I was on this very short list, but in the end I pivoted
- 5:35it because now that Halloween is over.
- 5:38Snow. And now that Remembrance Day is
- 5:41over, it's all about the Christmas vibe, the snow and
- 5:47that kind of business. So this movie hitting all those
- 5:50elements, OK. And it's a movie I love, I adore
- 5:56before, but I, I loved it from the minute I saw it.
- 5:58And I was 12 or 13 years old, so I was primed Batman territory
- 6:05here. Yeah, you're you are not me.
- 6:07I'm a little older and more wiser and mature.
- 6:09You're you're right at. That I was 10 years old when
- 6:12Batman came out and I told you that movie changed my life when
- 6:14I was a kid. I was just a lifelong Batman fan
- 6:17since. Collectible all the stuff,
- 6:19that's the toy age, right? Would you say 100% getting not
- 6:22just generic toys to keep you busy in a corner, but you're
- 6:25getting things that you like? That's right, I just.
- 6:27I couldn't get enough of this series.
- 6:29More toys. Batmobile Bat.
- 6:31Caves, All of it. None of it.
- 6:33None of it. I don't know.
- 6:34Superhero stuff in general. Hmm, which is interesting.
- 6:38I don't know why. Seems odd as it does seem odd.
- 6:41I mean, you're in the country, maybe it sticks and.
- 6:43Let's remember though, this movie is probably in the eyes of
- 6:47my parents a little bit. Too.
- 6:49Yeah, suppose it could be a. Little so if you if it's PG13,
- 6:53whatever it is they're going to knock off about.
- 6:56The question because I think there's elements of this movie,
- 6:59might agree as we get on. Parents clearly disagree.
- 7:01Yeah, they defaulted. But I can make my own decisions
- 7:05now though, and I'll let you know what I think.
- 7:06Yeah, please. That I'm all growed up.
- 7:09So yeah, so that's it. I just really wanted to revisit
- 7:11the movie and bring you along for the ride.
- 7:13So I sometimes appreciate it. Yeah, well, sometimes I do.
- 7:16I mean, it's a it's real roll the dice.
- 7:19You know, you, you really threw me for a curveball last week
- 7:22when you come out raving about passion.
- 7:25Dale was passionate. You are very passionate about
- 7:28passionate Dale. So I'll give you my thoughts and
- 7:31feelings throughout the movie and you will also share if you.
- 7:35That's kind of the job at. This it is, and see if you've
- 7:38lost any lust for the film or if it's even gained some, which is
- 7:42always a possibility with you. You are a wild card, Sir.
- 7:47Officially a joker, if you will. Would you like to share with us
- 7:53what I Am BD's take on the movie?
- 7:56Is I'm going to give it to you straight, please do.
- 7:59This synopsis, of course, comes courtesy of Old Faithful We have
- 8:03here. While Batman deals with a
- 8:05deformed man calling himself the Penguin, reeking habit across
- 8:10Gotham with the help of a cruel businessman, a female employee
- 8:14of the latter becomes the Catwoman with her own vendetta.
- 8:18That's too much. I don't want socks.
- 8:20It's so bad. I hate that.
- 8:22I don't love it. I mean, sure, all of that is
- 8:24accurate, but it's lengthy and it's obnoxious.
- 8:26It's wordy. I don't read these obviously
- 8:29beforehand just because that's just asking for it.
- 8:32Same as the trailer, you're asking for trouble totally
- 8:35afterwards if you want to kind of check it out and.
- 8:37See, like watching a trailer afterwards, because sometimes
- 8:39scenes that weren't in the movie or alternate cuts that were in
- 8:41the movie, Yeah, you're like, oh, I didn't see that.
- 8:43That was a different. Yeah, thread or passion?
- 8:45Dale was like, oh man, this is action that takes place mostly
- 8:50in Belgium. Exactly.
- 8:53Alright, Phil. Well, thank you for that.
- 8:55You're welcome. You mentioned it was directed by
- 8:58Tim Burton, obviously. Burton obviously, and Elfman is
- 9:02a Burton boy. Yes, they have a lot.
- 9:04Of he's done other movies, obviously we've talked about him
- 9:06with a simple plan where he did with Sam Raimi, but yes, he's
- 9:09very synonymous with Tim Burton for.
- 9:11Sure, I know if you mentioned the writer Daniel Waters.
- 9:14Daniel Waters. He did the Hudson Hawk
- 9:17screenplay. Yeah, questionable, but it's
- 9:20your boy so. It's on my shelf.
- 9:22I had a request to cover that movie really a few years ago and
- 9:27I haven't did Bruce himself. Give you a call, I don't think
- 9:31he would know your number. No, so that's what I know him
- 9:35from. But I know from Demolition Man,
- 9:37my friend, OK, that's a phenomenal movie made the year
- 9:39after this. I believe I'm.
- 9:40Free. So he was bringing out all the
- 9:43hits. He's also a great podcast guest.
- 9:45Is he OK? He's willing to talk about, he's
- 9:49willing to talk about his movies in a very like non.
- 9:54Kevin Bacon way. What's coming, Bacon?
- 9:56Do he won't talk about. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:59He's embarrassed. He's embarrassed of it.
- 10:01That's right. No, he will own up to sort of
- 10:03the movies that maybe weren't hits or whatever.
- 10:05On. That's good.
- 10:06That's a. Good quality.
- 10:07Also wrote Heathers just that I'd which is a cult favorite.
- 10:11Never heard of it. Is it about two women, both
- 10:13named? Heather, it's about 3:00, and
- 10:15it's a group of women in high school called, oh, they're the
- 10:18Heathers, and there's a little murder in there and Winona Ryder
- 10:23OK Christian Slater I've never watched all of it.
- 10:27I don't know why because it fits the bill, but it just came and
- 10:30went in a window and I just never went.
- 10:32Back this year like peak nodding years.
- 10:34No, it just came out in the early, late 80s, early 90s and I
- 10:38saw a trailer and I love Winona Ryder back then, but I just,
- 10:41she's done a Shannon Doherty was in it as well.
- 10:44Oh well, come on. But yeah, just never got around
- 10:47to it. Love Doherty.
- 10:49Well, Philip, I think at this point we can just get right into
- 10:51this film. Batman Returns 1992.
- 10:55That's right. I told you we've done a lot of
- 10:5792. Yeah, check.
- 10:57The spreadsheet and I'm thinking to myself, other than my parents
- 11:00not really wanting me to see it, I think what I did see that year
- 11:05was Sister Act. Oh.
- 11:07Yeah, that's what I was doing. That's right up your alley.
- 11:11I guess. And yeah, love nuts.
- 11:14Big fan of nuns. You're on the record.
- 11:18We'll have nothing. I love that movie.
- 11:19I love that movie back in the Oh yeah.
- 11:21And I also like the sequel back in the habit.
- 11:23That's. Clever.
- 11:24Good writing, Elaine. But yeah, I definitely did see
- 11:27that in the theatre. So jokes aside, that might have
- 11:29been the case. Very well.
- 11:30We're going to see this, and this is our one movie of 92
- 11:34again. I'm back in the boonies.
- 11:36I'm out in the. Boonies, right?
- 11:38And now that you're a city boy, you still go about once a.
- 11:40Year, if I'm lucky, if I'm lucky, it gets talked about
- 11:44more, but the actual action, it's the struggle.
- 11:47Yeah, sure, homebody. I went to see the new
- 11:50Springsteen. Movie Oh yes, I saw the trailer
- 11:52trailer for the preview on my I didn't go looking for it came up
- 11:56on my. Streaming service that will not
- 11:58be named. I hated it really.
- 12:00Yeah, you will get into it later, but I hate it.
- 12:03I mean, we can get into now, but.
- 12:05I'm just trying to remember. You are.
- 12:07Yeah, you do love Bruce. Absolutely.
- 12:08I was very excited. You're.
- 12:09Bruce, I'm a bond, you know what I mean?
- 12:12A bond. Bon Jovi Ohk.
- 12:14OK, I'm definitely not a bond. No, definitely not.
- 12:17No. You're the other other Jersey
- 12:19boy, yes? Well, I did not know Bruce was
- 12:23from Jersey Park. OK, good shout out to Jersey.
- 12:29That's right. And the movie theatres.
- 12:30Go see movies. Folks, go see movies.
- 12:32That's right. Don't do as I say, not as I do.
- 12:35And do it Phil does not what he says, because he says a lot of
- 12:38stupid shit. Alright.
- 12:42Believe me, you don't even hear half of it.
- 12:44That's right, all the albums and us.
- 12:46Jesus, Louise. Sneakers.
- 12:51I know we just sometimes because we recency bias will compare it
- 12:54to a previous movie we just done, but this takes place about
- 12:5830 years in the past. Yes, yeah, it does it.
- 13:02Does 33 years to be exact before we really get into the present
- 13:07day Gotham? Yes.
- 13:09OK, it's also 33 years from today.
- 13:12Sure. That the movie came out. 19-O is
- 13:15it? Oh.
- 13:15Well, 32 years. Ago, that is pretty close.
- 13:18That would be 2020 four 92 + 3233.
- 13:25Oh yeah, 33. Yeah, you're right.
- 13:27You are right. OK, so did you think that's what
- 13:29I was? Referring.
- 13:30I wondered what you were referring to because the way you
- 13:32phrased that was speaking more about current time rather than
- 13:37what we're about to watch is 33 years before I mistook what
- 13:40happens in the movie, which was 33 years ago from today.
- 13:44I got confused. Have issues with tenses.
- 13:47Yes, and your time guys. So it gets all fucked.
- 13:50That's the irony. Now you think I would get that?
- 13:52Straight. It was turned around by the.
- 13:54Way open that. Particular sentence we open in
- 13:58a. Flashback We open in a
- 14:00flashback. We need to set up the origin
- 14:02story of the Penguins, which we'll find out has a name.
- 14:07Yeah, we're not going to spoil that case.
- 14:09You haven't seen it? Yes, yes.
- 14:11Now I have a question around origin stories, right?
- 14:15Like this superhero thing at the time.
- 14:17This is what we do, right? Like in Batman, we open with the
- 14:20movie, we open with a parent getting robbed and then
- 14:23throughout the movie we see his flashback to what happened to
- 14:26his parents. And that's a movies superhero
- 14:29trope that all of them did. Superman did it exactly.
- 14:33And in modern years they've showed that and they went a
- 14:35little bit more into we're just doing it.
- 14:37The new Superman movie that came out this year, in fact, was just
- 14:40doing no origin. Just get in there.
- 14:42It's the world is already as it is.
- 14:44And if I can find something disappointing about the movie
- 14:46right away, conceptually, not not in the in the actual
- 14:50realization of it, but conceptually, OK, I think you've
- 14:53got a 2 hour window to to tell the story.
- 14:56And what you do is you spend 10 or 15 prepping the Penguin
- 15:01story. We spend 10 or 15 setting up the
- 15:04Michelle Catwoman. Stillman yeah, that's true.
- 15:06That's that's 1/2 an hour. It's 20 to 30 minutes.
- 15:09It's a quarter of your movie in origin.
- 15:12Explains the two hour plus. And then you've also got a sort
- 15:15of circle. You gotta.
- 15:17Yeah, but you also have to finalize that movie and finish
- 15:19whatever those characters are. So you're really only dealing
- 15:21with an hour. Oh yeah, of proper story.
- 15:26It does sort of lead to, like certain other things in the
- 15:29movie, feeling rushed, and we'll get into that a little bit
- 15:31later. But so, setting up this
- 15:33introduction of the Penguin character, the baby to Paul
- 15:38Rubens, did you catch Pee-wee's? Didn't adventure, not until I
- 15:41read the credits. I thought I recognized the
- 15:44maybe. And the woman is Diane Salinger.
- 15:48Course, I only bring it up because she was in Pee-wee's
- 15:51Playhouse. OK, so that's the connective
- 15:53tissue that I don't know if you like it anymore.
- 15:56I just do it anyway. I love it.
- 15:58Connective tissues. I live for it.
- 16:00But right away you're like, this is a Tim Burton movie.
- 16:03The darkness of it, the contrast.
- 16:05If you just can't afford lights, he spends how much money on
- 16:07other things. Like I don't have a budget for
- 16:09lighting so this movie is going to be dark.
- 16:11Very dark. I like it.
- 16:13I like the monochromatic kind of again, because it's winter,
- 16:15because it's got that white contrast and that's.
- 16:18Always nice. It's beautiful shots.
- 16:20Beautiful cinematography. Everything about it is great.
- 16:23Yeah. This movie is looking good right
- 16:26from the get go. Like a 92 about roughly 3233
- 16:31years later. I was pretty impressed out of
- 16:33the gate. In that regard, it's really
- 16:35impressive. And so we're watching this
- 16:37happen and they're displeased with their baby.
- 16:41You gotta see the baby. You gotta gotta go see the baby.
- 16:44In this instance, maybe you don't, baby.
- 16:45Yeah, take that ugly. And they are so ugly that they
- 16:50have to dispense. Of it, it's not breathtaking.
- 16:52No, no, it's different context. And yeah, they throw the baby,
- 16:55the carriage, the pram, the whole thing over overboard.
- 16:59And this is your title sequence. Yeah.
- 17:01And if you remember the first movie, The title sequence goes
- 17:03through what we think is almost like a bat cave, only to reveal
- 17:08the Batman logo. And here we have basically just
- 17:12following this carriage through the through the sewer.
- 17:15The system. Through this Arctic world
- 17:18amusement park. Have you been?
- 17:19No, but it was on the list. Doesn't end so well that
- 17:25particular part. But no, damn shame the insurance
- 17:27I'm sure. But yeah, I thought the opening
- 17:28sequence with the music obviously of.
- 17:32Beautiful score, I think even better than the first.
- 17:35One no saxophone. Missed opportunity?
- 17:38Don't think so. One thing that's.
- 17:39Missing. I don't think I've really said
- 17:42if I am or I'm not a Tim Burton. Fan.
- 17:45We've done a lot of his movie. We've done a couple most.
- 17:48Really. No.
- 17:50This is our fourth, maybe our fifth company.
- 17:52Other directors, have we done four or five of check the
- 17:56spreadsheet? There's so much to tell you
- 18:00that's true because I I'm more of a this actor 17 times.
- 18:04But Bruce would work with anybody, so.
- 18:06Yeah, you know what I mean, So. I've done a couple mores, I do
- 18:09know that. For sure we did a couple of
- 18:11miners by accident. Yeah.
- 18:13So it's hard to say. But we've done a fair amount.
- 18:15This is I think our 4th or. 5th That's very possible, Phillip,
- 18:17and I'm sure there's. More to come.
- 18:20So are you, are you, are you free to say?
- 18:23No, actually I'm not. He told me to zip it.
- 18:26There's things I like about Burton films and there's things
- 18:29I don't like. And this classic Dave answer,
- 18:32that's all that. But I'll tell you what I do
- 18:35like, please, and what I don't like.
- 18:37Not right now, as it comes up. As it comes up naturally.
- 18:40Sure, in the film. Did you like this title
- 18:43sequence? Generally.
- 18:44Yes, there's not much to it. There's not much to it, but.
- 18:47I like the imagery. Of that, yeah.
- 18:48Absolutely, and he's effectively adopted by these Penguins.
- 18:52Yeah, I guess from Arctic world, yeah.
- 18:54They're one of his, one of his own.
- 18:55Yeah, I mean, this movie, what you're going to need to do is
- 18:58just accept it on its terms. You have to check Reality at the
- 19:02Door. It's kind of a movie.
- 19:04Yeah, that's what we're and I'm fine with that.
- 19:06You're usually very receptive to that.
- 19:07We've been watching Friday the 13th and you've been more or
- 19:09less accepting of the circumstances.
- 19:11This is it. So.
- 19:12If you're basing it on a comic book, then you have to play by
- 19:15those rules. And although I will say the
- 19:18portrayal of the Penguin in this movie is considerably different
- 19:24than in The Batman from 2022. There's a TV series and what
- 19:30have you played by the great Colin Farrell.
- 19:31Yeah. Shout out to our one of our
- 19:33number one listeners. Also, Burgess Meredith played
- 19:36him in the 66 TV series. There you go of.
- 19:39Rocky fame, you played Mickey. So I will ask you this at the
- 19:42end of the episode or roughly in the last quarter.
- 19:44So be ready. I'm going to ask you what you
- 19:47prefer more, more grounded in reality or more like this.
- 19:52And I'm excited. So state of the end, stay to the
- 19:56end, I will. We go from the Penguin to the
- 20:05cat. We jump up to Shreks.
- 20:07Oh, we do. Don't we meet Christopher
- 20:09Walken's character Max? Shrek, Max Shrek and his
- 20:12secretary Selena, Kyle and assistant.
- 20:15That's right. Come on, have some respect.
- 20:17And I think he's fantastic in this movie.
- 20:20Christopher Walken. I think the character is fine,
- 20:22but I don't think that there's a particular reason when you've
- 20:25got Catwoman and the Penguin as villains that you've also got
- 20:30this other villain to top it off.
- 20:33I think it's a little top heavy for that kind of reality.
- 20:37I'm gonna push back on that, please, because I think it's
- 20:41just not gonna quite work. If you have a triangle, you
- 20:45wanna make a square. OK.
- 20:48He's the 4th point of that square.
- 20:50It might be a rectangle, actually, but my point is, it's
- 20:54four. Uh huh.
- 20:55OK, yeah, if you just have the Penguin and Catwoman and what's
- 21:00his name? Batman.
- 21:01That's right, yes, he returned in.
- 21:02This you might run into some trouble, so I think it's a
- 21:05safety net to help tell the story possibly.
- 21:08OK, one of the things I felt when I was younger, when I first
- 21:12saw it was that there wasn't enough Batman.
- 21:14Oh, OK, right. And in looking at it now, as
- 21:18much as I appreciate Christopher Walkins performance, I think,
- 21:20like I said, this might be one of my favorite Christopher
- 21:23Walken performances. That's like, I think he's I
- 21:27think he's so good in this movie.
- 21:28Yes, yeah. And I think the character is so
- 21:30fun, but I'm thinking it still takes away a lot of Batman time.
- 21:37He's almost not on the screen. And I don't know that I would
- 21:39change it, but I would like this movie to be 2 1/2 hours so that
- 21:43there's more time. OK, you want more time?
- 21:46I just want more Batman to be a part of the Batman movie.
- 21:50I think it's better told as an ensemble they're all in it
- 21:54together equally and it puts less pressure on Batman Michael
- 21:58Keaton to perform. I'm sure he appreciated his like
- 22:01the paycheck stays the same. So, Christopher.
- 22:03Walken and takes a little bit of the weight off shoulders sure of
- 22:06the rest of the crew and I don't think you appreciate him for
- 22:08that. I appreciate him fine, I just
- 22:10don't know that it's the right call thematically if not
- 22:14performance wise. I love him in this and this
- 22:16introduction is great when he's bouncing his weight around
- 22:20trying to sell a power plant to the mayor.
- 22:23They clearly don't need. It exactly.
- 22:24That's the impression I got. Absolutely.
- 22:27So they bring him down and we get the first wave of Christmas
- 22:31joy. Which is hard to find in Gotham.
- 22:33Absolutely, but they're coming down to light the tree.
- 22:36They have these big pillars. Very gorgeous.
- 22:38I love the set design in Tim Burton movies in particular.
- 22:41I love his Gotham so much. He is possibly one of the best
- 22:45in set design, if not the best. He's definitely got a vision and
- 22:48he hires the right people to do that, to translate that it's.
- 22:52Incredible. I imagine he uses a lot of the
- 22:54same. People I believe he shot it also
- 22:56in London. Not positive but he shot the
- 23:00first one in London. So is he British?
- 23:01No, OK, no, he just need big stage in Pinewood is a big.
- 23:05Stage Pinewood is huge. Michelle Pfeiffer.
- 23:07This is her first real introduction as just a regular.
- 23:11Absolutely woman. A gorgeous secretary.
- 23:15I guess yeah, she's not a bad. Looker.
- 23:17I mean, they kind of obviously dressed her down a little bit in
- 23:19this movie, trying to make Michelle Pfeiffer frumpy as a
- 23:21challenge, but yeah. Bit of a bit of a stutter tour.
- 23:23She just. Little lack of confidence.
- 23:25Yeah, lack of confidence, Absolutely.
- 23:27But she does make great coffee. That's right, she hasn't been
- 23:30house broken yet. No, it's what he says too.
- 23:32That's true, but she makes a good cup of coffee.
- 23:34Which is pretty impressive considering she is a corn dog
- 23:38she calls herself. That.
- 23:41Have you ever been called a corn?
- 23:42Dog. No.
- 23:43Have you ever eaten a corn dog? I love corn dog jam.
- 23:46Yeah. It's been awhile.
- 23:47Sure, you could call it a Pogo, but that's the brand.
- 23:51Yeah, it's like the whole Kleenex of the corn dog world.
- 23:53Course. Yeah, but yeah, very bad for.
- 23:55You. Yeah, Not great.
- 23:56I don't really like the Selena Kyle character.
- 24:00I'm happy when it evolves. It does change even outside of
- 24:05the Catwoman Selina does, obviously, but.
- 24:09Selena, as she's introduced here, yeah, I mean, it's the
- 24:12point she's supposed to be. As much as possible neurotic.
- 24:16Bland. Yeah, a corn dog.
- 24:19Silly, goofy, whatever. But a little.
- 24:22Goes a long way, and the nice thing is that this particular
- 24:24version of her is little. Like there's not a lot of time
- 24:27spent on her. Which I think is good because I
- 24:29agree. I was like.
- 24:31She's left to clean up because they all have to get down to
- 24:33light the Christmas tree. As I said earlier, this is a
- 24:36Christmas movie. With Michael Keaton say that
- 24:39that Batman 2, Batman two, I can do.
- 24:41That sure, absolutely establish the rules.
- 24:44Would he say that this is a Christmas movie?
- 24:46I don't know that he would say it.
- 24:47He doesn't really seem to like, I mean, now he's a little bit
- 24:50more open, but he was in the Kevin Bacon camp.
- 24:52Ohv. He was like, I don't want to
- 24:54talk about that man now for years, like decades.
- 24:57Huh, Interesting. When they released the box set
- 24:59back in the day, Keaton didn't participate.
- 25:02They interviewed Nicholson. They interviewed DeVito,
- 25:04Pfeiffer, Burton, Elfman. All the usual grew, but Keaton
- 25:10refused to to participate. Yeah, Nicholson, but can't get
- 25:13Keaton. I find that.
- 25:13Strange just didn't want to talk about Batman.
- 25:15Now since then he's donned the Cape again and was in the Flash
- 25:21a few years ago, which was garbage movie, but he was back
- 25:24in the Batman suit so there is a little I think softening.
- 25:28You think it's because he just got tired of being Batman?
- 25:31Like, yeah, like, I've done so many other great things and he
- 25:35has. Yes, we can both.
- 25:36Attest to that. I love him.
- 25:37I I think it's partly that it's also, you know, he's like, I
- 25:40didn't do much, particularly in this movie.
- 25:43Right. I was barely in the movie.
- 25:45I'm not gonna. Do this didn't do much here.
- 25:46So so maybe that's part of it too.
- 25:48OK, well, so we had our first like kind of Christmas thing,
- 25:51which I love and Christopher Walkins intonations is the stuff
- 25:56of legend, right? People like doing their
- 25:58invitations. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:59And he's gotta wing this speech. That's right, forgot the damn
- 26:02speech. Whose fault is that?
- 26:04What's her face? Yeah, Yeah, Selena.
- 26:06So he gets up there and he says the word bubbles.
- 26:10That's a great accent. Absolutely.
- 26:12But it basically gets ravaged the the city.
- 26:15This is the first action type of situation they attack tree and
- 26:20unprovoked. Absolutely the big.
- 26:23The big gifts. Kind of rolls into the since the
- 26:25town hall. Here not my.
- 26:26Work. No, they're confused to.
- 26:29What it is, Yeah, my favorite part was the guy just flying
- 26:32into the Christmas. Tree.
- 26:33Oh yeah, yeah. What I did notice at this point
- 26:35in the movie though, the difference between Burtons
- 26:38Batmans and Christopher Nolans Vons, like all the other stuff,
- 26:43was the world is very neat. It's a neat, very creative
- 26:50world. However, for me it feels really
- 26:52contained and this is the first time I felt like I could almost
- 26:56see the four walls. Of this set exactly.
- 27:01Think that's Pinewood? Yeah, exactly.
- 27:04And it's not really a knock, it's an observation.
- 27:08I mean, Schumacher kind of carries over that same vibe in
- 27:11his Forever and Batman and Robin.
- 27:14But yeah, it definitely deviated into a more and we did the bad
- 27:17man. Yeah, we did.
- 27:18Yeah, in that one. It's an open world, right?
- 27:20Yeah, like it's all grounded, right?
- 27:22Nolan brought it in, that sort of thing.
- 27:24They make Gotham, but they shoot it in Pittsburgh, they shoot in
- 27:26Chicago, they shoot it in a real cities.
- 27:29As opposed to this, which is I think more in line with the
- 27:32comic book, artificial heightened reality kind of
- 27:37thing. Sure, but Batman as a character,
- 27:40you can do either. I think that's been proven
- 27:42right. I think that's like the trade
- 27:44off. Totally.
- 27:45And I'm OK with both if the other elements of the movie are
- 27:48there. Totally.
- 27:49Story performances usual. Really, I mean other than
- 27:54obviously we did big fish. It's actually I think we've done
- 27:57fine. We did big fish and there's a
- 28:00lot of big sets in that. Even though some of it is set in
- 28:02the real world, it's obviously a heightened real world and that I
- 28:06just think it's his sensibilities, whereas Nolan is
- 28:08about making things grounded in. Reality.
- 28:11I don't like him. It can't stand Nola.
- 28:15So it is just a testament to each filmmaker's distinct style,
- 28:20right Batman? Movies can do it all, buddy.
- 28:21Yeah, you really get a good sense of it.
- 28:23That's the take away. And you get great directors
- 28:25doing it. I mean, I don't like the
- 28:26Schumacher movies. But nobody does.
- 28:27Apparently he did, I think, although one of the great
- 28:31special features on the commentary track for Famine
- 28:33Robin is mostly him apologizing. I haven't seen it, but I heard
- 28:37Clooney's the least. Terrible everything about them.
- 28:40It's terrible, everything. About it.
- 28:43We'll get there. We'll get there, get it done.
- 28:46It's got to be done sooner or later.
- 28:47That's right. We also get an introduction
- 28:49around this time to a few familiar faces, Phillip and I'm
- 28:53just going to spew it all out now, please.
- 28:55I'm going to get over with Band-Aid.
- 28:57RIP it off. I know as much as you appreciate
- 28:59it, as the listeners do as well. Number one, we have twisters,
- 29:02Sean Whalen. Oh yes, of course the.
- 29:05Newspaper guy? Yes, I'm sure you recognized
- 29:07him, probably from something else.
- 29:09Great face. We have Chip, He's from Hudson
- 29:14Hawk, which is the connective tissue to Daniel Waters being
- 29:18the screenplay writer such. Yeah.
- 29:20And he's a face I've seen in a couple of things as well.
- 29:23The one that you probably recognize the most was Vincent
- 29:27Schiavelli. Of course, we chatted about him
- 29:28a few weeks. Ago we did and I completely
- 29:31forgot about that because like, Oh well, he was in Star Trek
- 29:33Next Generation, he was in MacGyver goes.
- 29:35It hits your sweet spot. You've already pallets.
- 29:38Yeah, you're already spent and this need to go any deeper.
- 29:42Then there's two more, OK, one I knew and one I didn't until I
- 29:45looked it up. This one I did not know.
- 29:48We have Gregory Scott Cummins who played Acrobat Thug One.
- 29:54OHS prestigious. And what I'm going through the
- 29:56credits, I I recognized his photo is generic photo whatever
- 30:01when they choose, it could be 21, they could be 58 Bosch.
- 30:06There it is. And he's in all of them.
- 30:08Like, he just plays that funny side.
- 30:10No, no, as a funny side character, he's always doing odd
- 30:14jobs for them. And all the series, even the
- 30:15spinoffs, he's fantastic. And the one I'm very proud of,
- 30:20very proud of, when I saw his face actually in the credits was
- 30:23Anthony De Longis. I'm sure you know who I'm
- 30:27talking. About I know his cousin Anthony
- 30:29to shortest. Funny guy.
- 30:33See what I mean, folks? The shitty says he played
- 30:37terrifying clown #2 he's a stunt guy, Sure.
- 30:42When I saw his face, I'm like, you were this guy in MacGyver.
- 30:46And I looked it up just to confirm because I'm thinking
- 30:48it's not him. This is this is about to play
- 30:50this guy #2 or was it just, no, he was an assassin.
- 30:53OK, I played actually two different characters in
- 30:55MacGyver. That sometimes happens, happens,
- 30:57of course, back in those 80s, shows you gotta love.
- 31:01So I was really happy to have short list of recognizable as in
- 31:05the movie as this is a 92. So it's right in our.
- 31:08Sweet spot. Absolutely.
- 31:10Absolutely. Another guy that is fun to call
- 31:12out. I don't know if you recognized
- 31:14him in this. I know him from Batman.
- 31:20The last. The last one.
- 31:21Yeah. Pat Hingle.
- 31:23Dingle, He's done a few things. Yeah, absolutely.
- 31:25But I yeah, yeah, yeah, he's Commissioner Gordon.
- 31:27Yeah. And he says, what are you
- 31:29waiting for? The signal.
- 31:30The signal. And here we get the introduction
- 31:33of Bruce Wayne. Yeah.
- 31:35Now I love this scene and I love the moment.
- 31:39I love the shot, I love the darkness, I love everything
- 31:41about it, but it's a little bit weird.
- 31:44It is weird, I have written down here Bruce just sitting there
- 31:48like David Putty, if you remember from Seinfeld, he's
- 31:52just staring off into nothing. He's looking more pensive than
- 31:55Putty is, of course. He's got his hand on his chin.
- 31:58He's doing more. He's.
- 31:59Thinking, but he's not a thinker.
- 32:01No. He's just stares into
- 32:02nothingness. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:04But yeah, it's oddly stood out. Yeah, it's just a weird
- 32:06introduction. It's like his guys whole life at
- 32:08this point it's just sitting in a just wait for the addict I
- 32:11guess. Waiting for the call.
- 32:12The call. No Internet back then.
- 32:14Really, I guess you know what I mean.
- 32:15But anyway, I like the way light reflects off and comes through
- 32:18the window. He stands up low angle shot like
- 32:22this really hero look. So he's a hero.
- 32:25As silly as it may be for him to just be in this room, it's worth
- 32:30it for that sequence of shots to.
- 32:32Me, I think it would been even sillier if he was doing a
- 32:35puzzle, you know, I mean trying to find those corner.
- 32:38Pieces and like, just give me a yeah, I'm in the middle of
- 32:41something. Here Western.
- 32:43Blue Lake, that's true. So as a result, because he's now
- 32:46been alerted to it, of course we get the Batmobile, my favorite
- 32:51movie vehicle of all time. Not much competition really.
- 32:55Superman didn't drive license, that's true.
- 32:58It's incredible. And he's coming into town.
- 33:01Shrek is hiding and. Yeah, the Sun stood up for him.
- 33:05Like, get away, dad. Good for Chip?
- 33:07Yeah, yeah. Just go.
- 33:08Just go. Yeah, You gotta respect that.
- 33:11I don't know if you do it for your father.
- 33:12I don't know if I do it for mine.
- 33:14It's hard to. Tell but the Batmobiles in
- 33:16action, and with it comes some casualties.
- 33:20I found this interesting. I thought you might I want to
- 33:22talk a little bit about. It, I don't recall, and maybe it
- 33:25did happen. Batman killing anybody in the
- 33:29original or in any of the series.
- 33:31I'm sure it happened, yeah. I think in the first one there's
- 33:34a couple of moments where it could have happened, but I don't
- 33:36think specifically it's a thing. Whereas in Nolan's Batman it's
- 33:40expressly a thing. We do not, I will not kill
- 33:44anybody. There you.
- 33:45Go. But this one, he kills a few
- 33:47people, does a few people, he burns.
- 33:49The guy alive. Yeah, and for pleasure, it
- 33:52seems. Well, he's a pretty elaborate
- 33:54way to do it. You're blowing fire at me.
- 33:55Two can play that game. Exactly.
- 33:57Cheeky. It was absolutely.
- 33:58Yeah, it's a malicious that I wouldn't have expected.
- 34:02You think you know somebody. Throws those clowns that are on
- 34:04him shooting, they throw them into a burning toy store.
- 34:07Oh, that's true. Too.
- 34:08So I mean, ultimately there's a couple of casualties right off.
- 34:10The bat right off the bat, which?
- 34:12Didn't sit well with me. I felt it fine.
- 34:16I felt better than they. Did they're the bad guys?
- 34:18Yeah, exactly. And as the weather drops, you're
- 34:20going to want a little heat. That's true.
- 34:22You doing them a favor, right? And in all this chaos, Selena is
- 34:27there. She's out on the streets, as you
- 34:29know. Yeah, she went down to get him
- 34:31his speech. Yeah.
- 34:32So she's in harm's way, Phillip. Yeah.
- 34:34Luckily our boy Batman is there because a gentleman, not a
- 34:37gentlemen's. Probably being a little bit too
- 34:39nice. Woman, not a small man.
- 34:42Exactly has her board less hostage.
- 34:44Yeah, grabs her for safety. Yeah, like it's Batman.
- 34:48And it almost works because you have this moment where Batman
- 34:51reaches into his utility belt. Which is what you.
- 34:53Do grabs A grappling hook of some.
- 34:56Sort misses. Misses like a stormtrooper.
- 34:59That's right. And the guy calls him and he
- 35:00says, you missed. And then, of course, pulls it.
- 35:05Concrete comes off the wall, hits him in the back of the
- 35:07head, knocks him out. Now that is a kind of a
- 35:09throwaway moment in this movie. Yeah, I didn't think much of it.
- 35:13However. I mean plausibility I.
- 35:14Thought about it is my most favorite memory of the Batman
- 35:18return Super Nintendo game OK, which was a brawler that Capcom
- 35:23put out great sprites looks great beautiful.
- 35:26If you're ever have a chance to watch it on YouTube, it just
- 35:28looks incredible. OK and you're basically just
- 35:30punching your way through Gotham City set to the movie.
- 35:32And at that moment, if you don't do anything, you just fight them
- 35:36fisticuffs got you. But as that scene begins, huh.
- 35:39You could fire your grappling hook and hit the wall, press a
- 35:44button and get him hit in the back of the head and it depletes
- 35:47a bunch of his health bar and then you can go fisticuffs.
- 35:50So it was a little like Easter egg.
- 35:52Yeah, that if you've never seen the movie, you wouldn't have
- 35:54caught, of course. So it was always like, this is
- 35:56one of my favorite little Easter eggy things in any video game
- 36:00ever. Certainly a movie tie in.
- 36:01I was just like, that's so much. Fun.
- 36:02You got memory burned with Batman.
- 36:05You can't compete. With that, it was like formative
- 36:08back in the day. Tasers were really big in 90 to
- 36:1893. Yeah, everybody knows that,
- 36:20yeah. Prime time.
- 36:21Taser time. Taser time.
- 36:22Yeah. The woman on the plane and Die
- 36:24Hard 2. That's right.
- 36:26I did it on her dog. Yes.
- 36:28So that was the thing. Yeah, it was.
- 36:31Everybody had a Taser is a great gift.
- 36:33It's all the rage. What else was big in 92 was the
- 36:37Penguin OHS. Gripping.
- 36:43Bring intro. There.
- 36:45Yeah, we finally, it's about 20 minutes into the movie.
- 36:48That's correct. And Shrek drops down and we
- 36:51finally kind of meet the Penguin, the third party.
- 36:54We've met Selena, but we haven't obviously met Catwoman yet.
- 36:56But this is our introduction to the Penguin character.
- 36:59Arguably the main. Villain, I would say he
- 37:02definitely has the most screen time, the most character,
- 37:06definitely the most story. The most makeup.
- 37:08And certainly the most makeup. Let's start there.
- 37:10What are your thoughts on not knowing the Penguin character
- 37:13necessarily? Probably you know this and your
- 37:15lack of knowledge of the character and the history of it.
- 37:19Didn't like that tone. What are your thoughts on Danny
- 37:23DeVito as the Penguin? He was generally makeup wise.
- 37:27Let's just get into the character.
- 37:28Look more than character at this.
- 37:30Point Well, I think he was born for the role.
- 37:32OK, I think you have somebody who happens to be the right
- 37:35height. I mean, that's the elephant in
- 37:39the room here. OK, this is this calls for a
- 37:41shorter person. Yes, if you've ever been around
- 37:44Penguins. Him or Warwick Davis.
- 37:46There you go. From Willow.
- 37:48Is that right? We're Tom Cruise.
- 37:52Tom Cruise. Chino any of.
- 37:53Those you know. Yeah.
- 37:55What are your thoughts on the makeup?
- 37:56What are your thoughts on the look of the character?
- 37:58Yeah, he is certainly grotesque. Yeah.
- 38:01And I think it still holds up in 2025 as looking at a character
- 38:05and not seeing OHP. The makeup.
- 38:08Yeah, not seeing the costume. I mean, the body look
- 38:12questionable. Questionable.
- 38:13Looks like a bunch of pillows, but I think it still plays.
- 38:17But the face make up, the nose, the hands, the hair, teeth, the
- 38:21teeth, the excess of what I want to call Mercury coming out of
- 38:24his mouth because he eats a lot of fish.
- 38:25That's what I'm going with. That's.
- 38:27Yeah, yeah, Darkness under his eyes.
- 38:29I imagine he has not had a good night's rest when I'm introduced
- 38:34to him. I think I'm in store for a fun
- 38:37ride with this character. Both performance.
- 38:39And the look? I adore this particular.
- 38:43Oh, I figured as. Much so good to me.
- 38:45And like you're saying, I watched it 4K like it holds up.
- 38:47I don't. It's crisp, the lines, let's
- 38:50say, and the character design and the makeup is so flawless
- 38:54and so distinctly Tim Burton, yet also so Penguin.
- 38:59Yeah, credit where credits due to not feeling nitpicky this
- 39:02week. I appreciate feeling.
- 39:03I'm actually feeling generous this week.
- 39:05Yeah, doing real 180. Really changing up.
- 39:08Yeah, I like. I just want you to know there's
- 39:10nothing to do who's movie it is. Just feeling good today.
- 39:13Feeling, feeling. Good feeling great, feeling much
- 39:16better than the Penguin. Yeah, certainly much better than
- 39:19Max Shrek. The headache.
- 39:22Well, wouldn't you? If you're looking at an umbrella
- 39:24that has the. Spiral or spiral, there you.
- 39:27Know what's funny about that? I thought that was a part of the
- 39:30plot. OK that one of his superpowers
- 39:33was he can hypnotize people. Was it not in a Batman movie?
- 39:37Or am I just getting confused with the Riddler?
- 39:40Maybe. You're probably getting
- 39:41confused, but there is a plot, I believe.
- 39:43I'd like the tone of that. Batman Forever, Yeah.
- 39:46Where if they watch television, there's something that's going
- 39:49to suck their brains out. OK, so it's a brainwash.
- 39:51There's a brain like, yeah, OK. What he does do in this moment,
- 39:55though, let's relationship starts to develop between Shrek
- 39:58and Penguins. Penguins got a mission.
- 40:00He's got a a plan. Yeah, and it needs Shrek to pull
- 40:04it off. And what are your thoughts on
- 40:06the convincing methodology here? Do you remember Max's partner
- 40:11Fred? Atkins, there you Fred Atkins.
- 40:14Give him a hand. Yeah, just give him a hand.
- 40:16This guy. Well, you gotta remember what
- 40:19you're trash is what gets sent down the drain is something that
- 40:24could be flaunted by somebody. Else's treasure.
- 40:27Yeah, and he has shredded papers.
- 40:30She has a lot of patience. Lot of time, a lot of time.
- 40:33Patience. Clearly, I love it.
- 40:34When's the you know? Dark, that's right, doesn't.
- 40:37Sleep a lot. Yeah, it doesn't sleep a lot,
- 40:38but the hand part, that's kind of fun.
- 40:40Yeah, I like that. I appreciate.
- 40:41It adds A gruesome element to this character that is
- 40:44traditionally been pretty funny. So as a personification of this
- 40:48character, to be so sinister like that, I was like, oh, we're
- 40:50in for something. Here, Yeah.
- 40:51And what I like about the Penguins character in this, and
- 40:55I don't know if you've noticed it, you probably did because
- 40:57you've watched it a few times, is the fact that he's not all
- 41:00out bad all the time. There's a side to him.
- 41:04He's confused or he's not terrible.
- 41:07I think he's playing all of that for the sympathy to get what he
- 41:10needs. But I think that the
- 41:12undercurrent, we've talked a number of times about fathers
- 41:15and sons and children, parents and like that relationship and.
- 41:18Penguins and clowns. Penguins and clowns, any
- 41:20variation within. But there is, I think, an
- 41:22undercurrent of I, I, that loneliness is something I could
- 41:27tap into. Yeah, that sadness is something
- 41:28I could. Tap into.
- 41:29I think there's depth to the character that DeVito brings to
- 41:32it totally. So I think.
- 41:33Yeah, his performance I think is excellent.
- 41:35Yeah, 100%. Generally speaking, I assume he
- 41:37won Best Supporting Actor. He did not, but I wouldn't have
- 41:40been surprised. Not even nominated.
- 41:42Well, that's bullshit, people. Shit that you call Max a
- 41:46monster. He is not.
- 41:47He might be shrewd. Shrewd, yes.
- 41:49He's not a monster, though. I want that to be made clear.
- 41:52Alright, It's a shrewd businessman.
- 41:54That's right, got lucky. Some poor schmo.
- 41:57I love walking in this movie. But I think we need to take a
- 42:00break from the Arctic world for now.
- 42:03We'll get back there. Phillip.
- 42:04I know, I know. You love it.
- 42:05I do, and this is the challenge of the movie, because now we
- 42:08need to set up how Catwoman becomes Catwoman.
- 42:10This did not take place 33 years ago.
- 42:13No. This is all happening now.
- 42:14She's going through her present day.
- 42:16Yeah, transformation of sorts. She got called back to the
- 42:22office, yes, because she forgot something, right?
- 42:25Yeah, she needed to prep for the Bruce Wayne.
- 42:27Meeting because she's an assistant.
- 42:28She she called herself to reminders for moving to the
- 42:33smart move, and she already had a pretty rough evening here.
- 42:36So yeah. I mean, she didn't want to go
- 42:38back out. She's pretty neurotic, pretty
- 42:40single. We find out we can't find the
- 42:42right guy. She's pretty self deprecating.
- 42:47Is she? She's that too.
- 42:48Yeah, I don't know. But I do know for sure though is
- 42:52she likes pulling files that are protected and you run a risk.
- 42:58You run a risk. Absolutely.
- 43:00She gets the password. Have you ever had a password be
- 43:02your dog's name or your cat's name?
- 43:04You're not supposed to, no. That's one of the first rules.
- 43:06That's the first rules of Fight Club 2.
- 43:10No, I'd like to think I have a more complex than that.
- 43:14I know pets involved, but Max, he's got a problem with that.
- 43:18It's not happy, No. How did you get into the
- 43:21protective fund? Well, yeah.
- 43:23How industrious this is, his legacy, this whole power plant
- 43:26thing. So he doesn't really want
- 43:29anybody else that he doesn't trust to.
- 43:31Know she gives the great line and the banter back and forth
- 43:35here is great when she says something like it's a novel
- 43:37approach, the way that you're actually going to be storing and
- 43:41taking the power away. Interesting, interesting.
- 43:44And she says interesting, I would say.
- 43:46And then he says who would you say that?
- 43:48Yeah, exactly. Yeah, right.
- 43:50Next scene was one when I was 10 or 13.
- 43:53I was like, this is great. The the way he gets intimidating
- 43:58to her and the way she reacts to it.
- 44:01I think she's such a good actor. She isn't in this moment.
- 44:03This is where. I'm starting to like her.
- 44:05She's able to just pull into that world I love.
- 44:08But yeah, the sort of misdirection.
- 44:09And as a guy that's been watching horror movies at this
- 44:11time, that's what you do. You build up the tension.
- 44:14We've seen a number of these things, right?
- 44:15And you break the tension and then you.
- 44:17Attack. I didn't see that coming.
- 44:19Of course not. But it's like Alice in Part 2 of
- 44:22Friday 13th where the cat comes, everyone goes, oh, that was
- 44:26that, and then gets the spike. This was more surprising than
- 44:29most of the kills I saw in the Friday series, I'm sorry to say.
- 44:33But it also has a great line as well, right?
- 44:35It's not like you can just kill me.
- 44:38Actually, it's a lot like that. Yeah.
- 44:39Great line. Yeah.
- 44:40And the way the joke, everything about this scene I just love.
- 44:43And what are you? Let's go to.
- 44:46No way. Out we we established that was a
- 44:49railing. Yes, it was a railing, right?
- 44:51Not a lead floor. It was not a ledge.
- 44:53OK, allegedly it's a. Railing, and this is a window on
- 44:58a floor, pretty high. We're talking double digits.
- 45:01I would say yeah, safely, comfortably, comfortably.
- 45:05But she follows through something couple tarps.
- 45:08I don't know how much each tarp would would soften the blow.
- 45:13Decrease the rate of decline, of course, yes.
- 45:16I think it's enough. In this world, yeah, there it
- 45:20is. For me to say, you know what,
- 45:22maybe she'd make it. Yeah, Yeah.
- 45:24And luckily for her, even if she didn't fully make it, yeah,
- 45:28there's about 18 cats. What are they going to do that
- 45:31are you? Going to what are?
- 45:31They going to do Phil resuscitation.
- 45:33Yeah, cats can do that. I just took a first aid class.
- 45:35There were three cats there's. 3 cats in that one so.
- 45:39I mean, they're out there. On a Monday, Monday is Garfield
- 45:43there because he hates Mondays. He was so pissed.
- 45:47Off I imagine. But you know, he kind of ruined
- 45:49it for everybody. Yeah, he threw him out.
- 45:51Good. Gave him some lasagna, told him
- 45:53to get the fuck out. That's a win for him.
- 45:55So ultimately it's fine. I thought it was a little bit
- 45:59odd because one of the cats was almost like eating her finger.
- 46:03And it's not odd in the fact that's probably what a cat would
- 46:06do when they see a dead body. They have to eat like everybody
- 46:09else. And you know, especially in
- 46:10Gotham City, there's not a lot of food for animals of the wild.
- 46:14Could be, or maybe there is. I think that there's a pulse in
- 46:17your thumb. So I think she, the the cat was
- 46:21stitching. Maybe.
- 46:22Stitching. Yeah. close the Jerry.
- 46:24Yeah. Yeah.
- 46:24So what you learned there? Yeah.
- 46:25Absolutely. Yeah.
- 46:27Either way, I'm on board. I get it.
- 46:28I've checked most of it at the door.
- 46:30You see, what's interesting to me about this is if this one is
- 46:33the leap because Penguin, you're sort of like birth defect,
- 46:37right? Like, you can.
- 46:38Sure. As strange as it is, it's
- 46:40presented as birth defect. Yeah, but I questioned putting
- 46:43him in a cage. Sure, don't get me wrong.
- 46:45Yeah, it's physical deformity or whatever else.
- 46:49You're like, oh, birth defect looks like a Penguin just kind
- 46:51of leaned into it. This is a a woman being
- 46:55resuscitated by a cat. That's a buy in but I love.
- 47:00It of course you do. You have Michelle Pfeiffer.
- 47:03You like cats? I like cats more than I like.
- 47:07Dogs. Well, you happen to.
- 47:09See the Dog Man movie No No Dog Woman.
- 47:12Hey, you like Superman, didn't you?
- 47:14There's a dog in it. I.
- 47:15Hated everything about the dog in that fucking movie.
- 47:17The movie didn't mind so much but the dogs.
- 47:19Suck damn dog. But yeah, Phillip, I think you
- 47:23move past it. Absolutely.
- 47:24You move past it because of the following reason.
- 47:28Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, off the charts.
- 47:32Well, she's still on the charts, OK, But she's up there, OK.
- 47:35She's up there. And you know, if Casey Kasem was
- 47:38sure run the show, Top of the Pops.
- 47:40Yeah. Should be top five.
- 47:41OK. Yeah, I love her performance as
- 47:43Catwoman and I love this introduction of Selena in
- 47:46Catwoman phase, let's say when she goes back to her apartment.
- 47:50Yes, I like the new Selena. As well.
- 47:52Yeah, yeah. Who did I say?
- 47:54OK, I think she looks kind of sexy.
- 47:57All kind of. Disheveled.
- 47:58Well, you're not the only one. Bruce likes it too.
- 48:01Absolutely. Yeah, and she gets the call from
- 48:03her mom. She just starts smashing things
- 48:05around. She does smashing.
- 48:07But iconography of this scene in particular, I love.
- 48:09I love hell here. I thought that was just great.
- 48:11My only concern was is she still needs to live there.
- 48:14That's not up for sale. She's like, she's moving.
- 48:17So true. I don't know.
- 48:18I wonder, have you ever been this brought to mind this sort
- 48:21of sensation of a smash room? I believe they're called and
- 48:25they exist where you you pay money and you have basically an
- 48:29empty room and you're just break shit.
- 48:32Have you heard of? This, well, if it's empty,
- 48:34there's nothing to break. Just saying.
- 48:36So there's obviously stuff in there.
- 48:37What's in there? Plates, plates, glasses, dishes,
- 48:41bowls, cups. Take your pick.
- 48:44You have a lot of rage in. You no, but maybe it would help.
- 48:48I think it's there. I think it's meant to be
- 48:50therapeutic. I don't think it's like a fun
- 48:51time bring your kids to like, roll around a bit.
- 48:53I think it's like, Oh yeah, I have frustrations that I need to
- 48:57let out in a healthy, responsible way rather than
- 48:59something maybe more. Destructive, but it's so kind of
- 49:02out in left field like well. Probably cheaper I.
- 49:04Would say, well, scientifically maybe that would work.
- 49:07So it's interesting. I also have heard of the one
- 49:09where you go out to the forest and just yell.
- 49:13Sure, Yeah, yeah. Nice to kind of let out your let
- 49:15it out. She does that a little later
- 49:17too. Yeah, I.
- 49:18Don't know if I have anything to let out or maybe it's just
- 49:21bottled up so deep inside it's in my butt.
- 49:23I think that's how deep. It is.
- 49:25I think we've spent a lot of time on this podcast talking
- 49:28about the things that are bottled up pretty tight in your
- 49:30life here, so. Maybe I'm just setting it up in
- 49:32small doses. Be Yeah, yeah, whatever works
- 49:35like a carbon. Monoxide.
- 49:37Yeah, it's not good. Well, moving away from the Smash
- 49:41Room, as you so elegantly called it.
- 49:44We're going to go back to the tree because it's the really
- 49:47only set in this movie. Centerpiece for sure, really is
- 49:51the centerpiece of it. And the mayor will make a speech
- 49:53because things are happening and he needs to get things under
- 49:56control. That's what mayors do.
- 49:57That's what they're supposed to. Do in theory.
- 50:00Yeah, and he calls it. He says no more violence.
- 50:02There's no more violence for 6 seconds and the circus crowd
- 50:09comes back and there's more violence.
- 50:11In this case, they take the baby.
- 50:13They take the baby. That's the theme.
- 50:14Yes, so he sets up Penguin as the hero at this.
- 50:17Point Yes, that's the play. Yeah, that's and it plays
- 50:19because he's mentioned earlier, Penguin has that his goal is to
- 50:23ascend, find his parents, do these things.
- 50:25Get up there. Yeah, Get in the game.
- 50:27And he gets to humanize himself. This is really actually pretty
- 50:30smart. It's a good move.
- 50:31Yeah, it's a good move. It's yeah.
- 50:33You get everybody on your team on your side and you soften your
- 50:37image. Even though you look like a
- 50:38piteous Penguin boy, you've got some flexibility.
- 50:41And you can even use that. Play that.
- 50:43Card and that's what he does ultimately, ultimately want to
- 50:45find my parents. I want to know who I am and who
- 50:49they were and. He's more than a guy with a duck
- 50:52with good hydraulics, am I right?
- 50:55That's right, it's deeper than. That, but those are really good
- 50:57hydraulics, absolutely. Some of the best.
- 50:58But Batman is suspicious correct of Penguin?
- 51:02I think that needs to be said. Yeah, he says it.
- 51:05He said yes. So him and the Butler.
- 51:09That's right. Well, first he says, I hope he
- 51:11finds his parents. He's not convinced just yet.
- 51:13But then eventually it becomes a little bit more obvious.
- 51:15The Penguin wants to go to the records hall.
- 51:17Yes. And Shrek wants him to be alone.
- 51:21Shrek kind of plays his middleman.
- 51:23Yes. He's a personal friend.
- 51:25Great line. He's a friend of the city.
- 51:27That's right. And give the Constitution a
- 51:30rest, he says. No media, no press.
- 51:32And I thought. It's nice.
- 51:34It's nice to know that 33 years later, they've done just that.
- 51:37Yeah, they've just stopped the Constitution all around.
- 51:40Yeah, alright. Worry about media doesn't count.
- 51:43They haven't paused it, they've just.
- 51:44Stopped it. Just stop it all around.
- 51:45Click. Yeah.
- 51:46And I think it's really healthy. Yeah.
- 51:49That people in power can do what they want.
- 51:50I think it's working out well. I it seems to have the long game
- 51:53played out. Absolutely.
- 51:54I think it's gonna end up real great, 100%.
- 51:57But what we get in this moment at the very least is this really
- 52:00cool shot the Penguin. And throughout this movie, I
- 52:02love this character so much. I know you do, but watching him
- 52:05and listening to him kind of grunt and yeah, right.
- 52:08Just always, always doing it. And then there's that great shot
- 52:11where he looks up, if you recall, when he's jotting down
- 52:15all what we don't know yet, but he's jotting nothing, probably
- 52:18exactly, but he looks up. There's that great overhead shot
- 52:21of the. Monocle, his nose, the makeup
- 52:23looks incredible and just like he's an iconic moment.
- 52:26Iconic shot from this movie that has lived with me for 30 years.
- 52:29I think it's so good. I love the monocle shot.
- 52:32It's rarely used because not let people wear monocles.
- 52:34Very true. Bring it back.
- 52:35Bring it back. Which also leads to the Penguin
- 52:38going to the graveyard. The Penguin, like you mentioned
- 52:41earlier, wants to find out who his parents are.
- 52:44And that's his. That's his.
- 52:45Game. That's his Yeah, that's just
- 52:46stick. Yeah.
- 52:47And he does. He's a Cobblepot.
- 52:49Turns out. Yeah, Mom and Dad are dead.
- 52:52Got what they deserved ultimately, yes.
- 52:54They weren't very nice people. They were not the devoted
- 52:56husband, loving wife. Yeah.
- 52:58So I mean, they did something right.
- 52:59That's pretty generic. And everybody's following him
- 53:02around like the media. Yeah, they're there for Cole.
- 53:05They're there for that. But again, a nice moment.
- 53:08I think it's great and if it's a performance for us as an
- 53:11audience or it's a performance for the media as Oswald, it
- 53:15works either way. It comes across as sincere.
- 53:17Yeah, he forgives. Them he takes a big man that's
- 53:20right to do that. They say right after you don't
- 53:22need hands if you've got heart. Yes.
- 53:25And the Penguin in this moment has heart.
- 53:27He does have heart, doesn't have hands.
- 53:30Stereotypical flippers, says it. He calls it.
- 53:32It's got flippers and Catwoman. She just has flips.
- 53:36She does have flips. This is her.
- 53:38Mode. Yeah, this is Yeah, Please go.
- 53:40A convenience. Here I just think to myself,
- 53:43like Selena Kyle prior to getting rescued and resuscitated
- 53:48by cats, probably wasn't doing back.
- 53:51Flips and no, not so. It's amazing what can happen
- 53:54after a cat nibbles at your thumb or finger.
- 53:57Surprised this technology hasn't taken off in the 33 years since.
- 54:01It's like being bit by spider. Who knows what could?
- 54:03Happen. That's it.
- 54:04I'm really excited about the possibilities regardless.
- 54:07Stops a bad guy from doing bad things to a woman.
- 54:11Yeah, So you think she's a hero now?
- 54:12Well. Similar to the Penguin, there's
- 54:15a duality to her character. Not only is she two people, but
- 54:19as Catwoman. She's wrestling within that.
- 54:22Yeah, she's definitely a lot of wrestling.
- 54:24Yeah, it's a good scene. It's a good point to make, and I
- 54:26think the Penguin does as well. One of the readings of that
- 54:29character is this duality. I think it's one of the themes
- 54:31throughout the movie and definitely comes up later.
- 54:33Definitely. But I like that she is both
- 54:36receptive to saving the woman, but then immediately calls her
- 54:40out on making it be better. Yeah, like you're asking for it.
- 54:44But I will say, watching Michelle Pfeiffer as the
- 54:47Catwoman in this moment. You like it?
- 54:51They. Might be one of the sexiest
- 54:52people in the world. You got that poster on the wall.
- 54:54I would have bed. Yeah.
- 54:55I mean, the one was a full body in the mirror, like in the
- 54:58window. That was a thing.
- 54:59But her face with that red lipstick and the costume and the
- 55:03camera shot, I'm just like, this is clearly one of the most
- 55:05beautiful women in the. World.
- 55:06Is she more beautiful than Sean Young?
- 55:09Yeah, let's have it out 100. Percent.
- 55:11Did you picture Sean in this role because of our conversation
- 55:14in No Way Out as Catwoman? No.
- 55:17Really, we just. Talk.
- 55:19I mean, I didn't so much as I've thought about that in the years
- 55:21since. Yes, it definitely crossed my
- 55:23mind. And to be honest, Michelle
- 55:25Pfeiffer wasn't even the first pick.
- 55:28Who was? Annette Benning.
- 55:30Oh, I did hear that. OK, hold on.
- 55:33In 1992, she just done the Grifters.
- 55:35I'm computing. It was pre Bugsy.
- 55:38OK yeah. Or maybe it was after.
- 55:40No, don't think it was before Bugsy.
- 55:41But anyways, she was pregnant and so they couldn't cast her
- 55:44so. They go because she can do the
- 55:46back flip. She couldn't do all the stuff,
- 55:47can do the physicality. Yeah, well.
- 55:49I've got a stunt. Double so they bring the
- 55:51Michelle Pfeiffer. I honestly don't think anybody
- 55:53else could do that role. Which is funny.
- 55:54Because like this is perfect. I don't have a lot of exposure
- 55:57to Michelle Pfeiffer. Of course I'm going to lay it
- 56:00out. For you never done it, Michelle.
- 56:01We haven't. We haven't Phillip, and that
- 56:03bothers me and I'm surprised that she can play this type of
- 56:08character. I just don't see her doing it.
- 56:10I see more of a serious role and an romantic movie, you know,
- 56:14other genres. So I think I got to give credit
- 56:18for because I think Sean Young and Annette Benning probably
- 56:21could have done. Maybe version of this character?
- 56:23Yeah, it could have been just as good, maybe a little better, a
- 56:26little worse. We'll never know.
- 56:27No, we'll never know. What we do know is what we see
- 56:30on the screen, and we see a great performance by Michelle
- 56:33Pfeiffer as Catwoman. Borderline legendary.
- 56:36Yeah, it's really fantastic and strangely did not lead to
- 56:41anything further. She never played the character
- 56:43again. That was not a a Catwoman movie
- 56:46property TV show. The Penguin has gotten all this
- 56:49stuff as you're mentioning. Which was a surprise to me.
- 56:51But as she makes her exit, we have Bruce Wayne making just a
- 56:56grand entrance, apparently because he has a meeting.
- 57:00With he's going to meet Shrek. You're good buddy there.
- 57:04Maximilian. Yep.
- 57:06Absolutely. So they're gonna talk about this
- 57:07power plant? Yeah.
- 57:08They got to talk about it. Gonna hash it out.
- 57:10Yeah. And Bruce is come prepared.
- 57:12He's got his studies. That's what Bruce does.
- 57:14It's a hell of a throw. I don't know why, but I really
- 57:16was impressed by. That was and I've been watching
- 57:18a lot of baseball lately. It's true.
- 57:19And I'm thinking we got Vladi Guerrero right here and Bruce
- 57:23Wayne. I don't know if you saw that,
- 57:24that throw to third base course. Did you have watched some of the
- 57:28stuff? I don't know who you never know
- 57:30with you, your sports. You're you're I was at a sports
- 57:33bar last night. Where are you?
- 57:35Stayed right up until the 7th inning of course.
- 57:37Why would you say for the care about what was happening?
- 57:41Yeah, I agree. That was a great toss.
- 57:44Noteworthy. Yeah, it's such a silly thing,
- 57:46but I was like, oh, that's that's really well shot and I
- 57:48wonder how many takes it took to do that.
- 57:50I'm assuming one. Yeah, hopefully.
- 57:52Well, if it was Clint Eastwood had only be that's been shot.
- 57:56You get you better get it right. And we have Selena come right
- 58:00back to join them in the office. Yes, strangely, he says.
- 58:04She's out extended vacation. Yeah, because he thinks she's
- 58:09thinks he's dead. He was shocked.
- 58:11What an idiot. You know there was 18 cats below
- 58:14no taking care of. Her.
- 58:15Did you pick up that Bruce misspoke?
- 58:17Yes. I didn't.
- 58:18I I rewound it the second time I watched it, and it's a
- 58:20throwaway, but it's funny. It's really good.
- 58:22It's cute. Yeah.
- 58:23You wanna feel some chemistry? Yeah.
- 58:25Between the two. This is not Selena from the 1st
- 58:2710 minutes. Nope.
- 58:28This is not Catwoman. Someone else entirely.
- 58:30It's a new character. Yeah, Yeah.
- 58:32I love that they kind of play with that.
- 58:33And ultimately it is fundamentally what the movie is
- 58:36about, even under control way line.
- 58:38But it is ultimately I mistook me for someone else.
- 58:41I don't know who I am. You did we meet before, did we?
- 58:45Right, can't admit or they can't yet know.
- 58:48Like all of that duality is happening in the back burner.
- 58:51And I don't know if you picked up on this though, please.
- 58:53Ricky Friedberg is dead. Yeah, poor guy.
- 58:55The poor guy, he had a good run. He made fun of her in high
- 58:58school. I think that's what the story
- 58:59was. Bad call.
- 59:00Yes. He noticed that she wasn't
- 59:01wearing underpants. Yeah, you don't want to do.
- 59:03That I'm telling you, if I knew and saw and witnessed Michelle
- 59:07Pfeiffer without underpants, I'd be OK.
- 59:10That I died right after that would be, well, I've.
- 59:13Peaked we don't know if it was right after maybe it was because
- 59:15of that wasn't. Made clear, maybe a cat.
- 59:17Maybe. Maybe.
- 59:19Revenge. Yeah, or a cougar.
- 59:21Have you seen that new thing that's going around now with the
- 59:24cougar coming in the front door? It's all AI.
- 59:26You know when you see it the first time, think, Oh my God,
- 59:28that's real. And then everybody does the same
- 59:30thing where they have this cougar and your 4 year olds out
- 59:33on the OK wherever. Sure.
- 59:35The front porch, perhaps, if it's Florida and it looks real,
- 59:41sure. But now everybody's doing it, so
- 59:42you know, it's. Fake.
- 59:43I've said really know for years. I do not trust anything I see on
- 59:46the Internet. It's particularly on Facebook.
- 59:48Like anything that's shared, I'm like, I just don't.
- 59:49Be stupid, just stupid. I mean, I watch.
- 59:51It but I don't trust the news like the articles sound so is
- 59:54saying it doesn't I don't buy. As long as you trust me, buddy.
- 59:57That's right, you and me, because you know, I do trust
- 1:00:02though. Well, I've written down the next
- 1:00:04scene, Max in the Penguin. Or yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:06Which one do you trust? I trust Oswald from mayor.
- 1:00:10OK, good for you. You're backing.
- 1:00:11Him. No, I just got the button.
- 1:00:14I do have the button. I love that button In the video
- 1:00:16game. There's a lot of that imagery as
- 1:00:18well. I think it's great that Shrek
- 1:00:20has got a plan and Oswald doesn't want to do it because
- 1:00:23he's single minded. He wants the kids.
- 1:00:25That's it. He's still working in his little
- 1:00:26corner with the notes. That's true.
- 1:00:28Which if you're not paying attention, you don't.
- 1:00:29I didn't even. Really, what's going on?
- 1:00:31Like what was his? Actual other motive that's
- 1:00:33happening. And Shrek knows Penguins well
- 1:00:36enough, drops of raw fish his way.
- 1:00:39Man, that looked. Real.
- 1:00:41It totally looked real. Was.
- 1:00:42Really. Like did Danny say I'll do it, I
- 1:00:44will eat a raw? Fish, I think he probably.
- 1:00:46I'm almost positive like that is a trout or salmon, like I don't
- 1:00:51know which fish. Sea bass.
- 1:00:52Could have been. Yeah, I think it was a real
- 1:00:55fish. It's not caught, that much I
- 1:00:57know. No, it's clear.
- 1:00:59I don't think I know cars. It did work, dangled it and.
- 1:01:03Absolutely. Did reveal is that he's got a
- 1:01:05surprise and the surprise he's gonna run Oswald for mayor.
- 1:01:08Despite the fact it's. December.
- 1:01:10Goldie Wilson it is. Yeah.
- 1:01:12It's December, and he's like, I'll handle that part.
- 1:01:14Yeah, don't worry about it. Anything can happen when you
- 1:01:16don't care about the Constitution.
- 1:01:17You can have election anytime, especially if you got Jen Hooks.
- 1:01:19Jen, Jen. Sorry.
- 1:01:21Jan Hooks back in you. Absolutely.
- 1:01:23An image consultant. She's got a lot of work to.
- 1:01:26Do Yes, she does, because. He's not the pretty picture.
- 1:01:29No, and he's into her. Of course.
- 1:01:31Did you pick up on that little bit of appeal, corn dog?
- 1:01:34He is, he says later. You're the hottest student a
- 1:01:39hero could have, Yeah. He doesn't like Steve witting so
- 1:01:43much because he bites his nose. Yeah, I think he was in the
- 1:01:46Hogan family. He might have been.
- 1:01:48That's my television reference from 1987.
- 1:01:51You're on your own on that one. I got nothing.
- 1:01:53To bring surprise, one of the friends could be, and this is
- 1:01:56another example of like it's not a kids movie, but it's marketed
- 1:02:01like with the toys and all this stuff.
- 1:02:03And here he bites his nose. Bloods use everywhere like it
- 1:02:06is. It's kind of gross, pretty
- 1:02:07grotesque. I didn't get the sense that this
- 1:02:10was for kids at all. Yeah.
- 1:02:11Or the released It's for adults as well.
- 1:02:14Kids went on Oprah. She had a special episode.
- 1:02:17Oh, wonderful. And basically had kids on that
- 1:02:20show talking about how traumatizing it was to see this
- 1:02:23movie. Yeah.
- 1:02:24So they should have slapped the old 13 on it in.
- 1:02:26Hindsight, but then the studio is like, well, no, we want
- 1:02:28families to go, we want the money to go.
- 1:02:30But because of the success of Batman, they basically went to
- 1:02:33Burton and went like, do you want like Carp Blanche?
- 1:02:36Wow. So it's his creative vision, but
- 1:02:39to a fault, I think. At the slapped on with the G.
- 1:02:41Yeah, gross. Maybe for you I loved it too.
- 1:02:46I just I mean you love the more. This is pretty tame.
- 1:02:49I had no problems with it, I just think it was an issue for
- 1:02:51sure of the movie all those years ago.
- 1:02:54And I think obviously the idea is to become mayor, you got to
- 1:02:57create chaos to make the existing mayor look bad.
- 1:03:01That's never been done before in real politics.
- 1:03:03No, it's certainly not right now in Portland and Chicago and
- 1:03:06California, you know, create a war zone and therefore you get
- 1:03:09to look like a guy that yeah, it's solving the war, probably.
- 1:03:12There you go. Call the guys in Langley.
- 1:03:18But we do get some cool. Explosions.
- 1:03:20Yeah, it's kind of another action sequence time, right?
- 1:03:22Again, visually within that playground looks absolutely
- 1:03:27fantastic. Batman is on the job like he's
- 1:03:30on call. He's there, not like he's
- 1:03:32napping. Now he's sitting in his room,
- 1:03:33waiting. For the He's waiting for the
- 1:03:35call. He's finished the puzzle.
- 1:03:37Yeah. And we get a few sequences here
- 1:03:38that are pretty interesting. What was the one that stood out
- 1:03:41for you? Well, like we alluded to
- 1:03:42earlier, the fact that he just cold bloodly blows up a circus
- 1:03:48clown feels a little, Oh yeah, extreme side.
- 1:03:51He did do. That Hey, you've got dynamite.
- 1:03:53Yeah, which is funny. Punches him in the stomach,
- 1:03:55slaps it into his pants basically and throws him.
- 1:03:58And I thought, oh, he's gonna throw him into the alley.
- 1:04:00I didn't remember. Throw him into the sewer or
- 1:04:02whatever. And the water will.
- 1:04:04No, it just blows up, right? Afterward, we would.
- 1:04:06Assume that he blew up a man. Yeah, yeah, that happened.
- 1:04:10And then we tried to be funny with the bat frisbee.
- 1:04:13Oh, the bat, The batarang. Yeah, the Batarang, sure.
- 1:04:15If that's true, I don't know the official terminology for these.
- 1:04:18I didn't have any of the. Toys in the previous it was just
- 1:04:21like a single boomerang type of thing, but this time technology
- 1:04:24is such that you can program it in five particular characters.
- 1:04:28This is CGI really OK, early use of that early using, you know,
- 1:04:33it's like the CGI used in Prince of Thieves.
- 1:04:35If you remember when they do the CGI arrow, OK that we follow the
- 1:04:40arrow being shot and it goes into the tree.
- 1:04:42Remember that be good for 3D. Yeah.
- 1:04:44Well, it's going the other direction, but, well, whatever.
- 1:04:46This is an opportunity to use the same technology.
- 1:04:49Well, we know dogs love frisbees, so they try to be
- 1:04:51funny and the last one goes to the woman that owns the dog.
- 1:04:54That's right. Pretty bland.
- 1:04:56Yeah, she's not. She's disinterested in
- 1:04:58everything. She is.
- 1:04:59She's above it. That's her character and I love
- 1:05:01it. And the last thing I want to
- 1:05:02point out anyways is we get that sound.
- 1:05:06Oh yes, I just say sound and you know what I'm talking about.
- 1:05:09Well, I know what you're talking about because I have it written
- 1:05:12down here as well. OK, I just know from the
- 1:05:14stormtrooper. Sure.
- 1:05:16I thought it was a Star Wars thing.
- 1:05:18Well, I mean, it's not unique to Star Wars.
- 1:05:20It is in that, but it's also in every Indiana Jones movie and
- 1:05:24it's then every Jurassic Park movie.
- 1:05:27No, yeah, I don't remember hearing it, Jurassic Park, any
- 1:05:30of them. Yeah, it's there.
- 1:05:32It's called the Wilhelm Scream. OK, well we just watched them
- 1:05:35watch them again. Oh, wait time.
- 1:05:36OK, it's sorry the Wilhelm. Wilhelm Wilhelm Wilhelm Wilhelm
- 1:05:43Scream. It's a sound effect been used
- 1:05:45for 100 years. I thought it was a Lucas thing
- 1:05:48so. Check it out on YouTube.
- 1:05:49There's a supercut, maybe I'll put it on the.
- 1:05:50Facebook page, well, it happened at 5721 of this one.
- 1:05:53That's what I wrote down. Write it down and it plays and
- 1:05:56it plays. But it holds up the test of
- 1:05:58time. Well, we have happened around 60
- 1:06:01minutes. So we're about just about
- 1:06:02halfway of the movie. We finally have Batman and
- 1:06:06Penguin side by side, side by side.
- 1:06:09They finally meet their on screen for the same shot for the
- 1:06:12first time. And Batman calls him out on his
- 1:06:14plans. Yeah.
- 1:06:16And wise to it. It's a great little exchange.
- 1:06:20You're not the mayor in Penguins.
- 1:06:22As things change. Yeah.
- 1:06:23Boom. Says you don't think you're
- 1:06:25going to win, do you? Things change.
- 1:06:27Change. I like his better.
- 1:06:29Penguins is better, Grant. And we have Catwoman, who is
- 1:06:33kind of crashes the party. She's a party crasher.
- 1:06:36And I like that. You do.
- 1:06:37Well, of course. Well, I like that we have all
- 1:06:39three on the screen because it's been an hour into the movie.
- 1:06:41Yeah. And we've done 2 origin stories.
- 1:06:44And a lot of Christopher Walken that you just don't like.
- 1:06:46I love Chris, an actor, as a. Performer.
- 1:06:49But yeah, we finally have what we paid to see.
- 1:06:51And it and it paid off because her line she just walks out of
- 1:06:54the department store says meow. And the explosion behind her.
- 1:06:58I'm like, that's good, That's good.
- 1:07:00That's that's. Good direction.
- 1:07:01Yeah. And I like the fight sequence
- 1:07:03that happens afterwards. Yeah, someone provoked somebody
- 1:07:06who started that, but yeah, it's tough to say.
- 1:07:08The Penguin leaves. He's got his umbrella.
- 1:07:10He. Takes off.
- 1:07:11He's got an umbrella for every occasion.
- 1:07:12He's very. It's pretty impressive.
- 1:07:14Yeah, yeah. Could use 1 today, right?
- 1:07:17Totally. But anyway, and so Catwoman and
- 1:07:19he have this fight and. Rooftop.
- 1:07:21Sort of. Yeah, I like it because it's all
- 1:07:23defence, Batman. All defence, All defence.
- 1:07:26Defence wins championships. And then finally, he kind of
- 1:07:28strikes her. So how could you don't do that?
- 1:07:31I'm a woman. Sorry, I it's classic Yeah,
- 1:07:35manipulation I love. It when a manipulating.
- 1:07:38Yeah, but I think it's really good dynamic that sets it up
- 1:07:40because he doesn't want to do it, but he sort of pushed and
- 1:07:43pushed and pushed. But ultimately she ends up
- 1:07:46losing the fight, if you will. Yeah.
- 1:07:47Loses the tussle, which results in the most unrealistic thing in
- 1:07:50this movie. Tell me I've put up with a lot.
- 1:07:52You've welcomed so much. I have because, you know, I'm
- 1:07:54feeling generous today. Absolutely no nitpicks on this
- 1:07:57end. But she lands in a dump truck
- 1:07:59full of Kitty. Litter.
- 1:08:00I don't think it's officially Kitty litter.
- 1:08:02I think she calls it Kitty litter.
- 1:08:04I know Kitty litter. That's what it looks like, or
- 1:08:07what I would assume it is. It's movie Kitty litter the very
- 1:08:09least. It's winter and Christmas all
- 1:08:13come on, you think it's sad they'll know what sand from the
- 1:08:16streets. OK.
- 1:08:18You know what? Sand for the street?
- 1:08:20What? Because I'm in a generous mood,
- 1:08:23it'd be silly for me to fight this one.
- 1:08:24Anyways, I'll give it to you because you would not have
- 1:08:28actual cat litter. In that exactly, it'll be sand,
- 1:08:30passion. It'll be sand, yeah.
- 1:08:32Which could be doubled as a sand as as a candle owner in a pinch
- 1:08:35in a in a pinch. My cats just used the rug.
- 1:08:39And the couch. And the bed.
- 1:08:49The enemy of my enemy is my. Friend, I've heard that before.
- 1:08:53In this instance she goes to Penguins layer.
- 1:08:55I think he has a temp area within Shreks.
- 1:08:59And he's got the upstairs of whatever that building is.
- 1:09:01Trick owns it. You could deal it red
- 1:09:04controlled. It doesn't pay for AC.
- 1:09:07Yeah, that's good. And he needs it.
- 1:09:09He needs he loves the AC. So basically Catwoman is kind of
- 1:09:12looking for an ally and that shot of her lying on the bed
- 1:09:17when he walks in? Gorgeous.
- 1:09:20But they hatch a plan to destroy the Batman, create an issue in a
- 1:09:24situation where he is now the villain.
- 1:09:26Yeah. What is her motivation?
- 1:09:28I know why she wants Max out of the picture.
- 1:09:30Yes, I think that's obvious. Yes.
- 1:09:32You know, die for a die, as is spoken later.
- 1:09:36Is it just because she lost the fight?
- 1:09:38I think it's partly that. I think it's that, right?
- 1:09:40Thing. I think it's that he is the good
- 1:09:42guy that will likely stop her from trying to kill Max.
- 1:09:46OK, I think that's it. I don't know, there's much more
- 1:09:48because I agree with you. Her motivation is unclear.
- 1:09:51Penguin is a bad guy set up to be a bad guy and is thwarted by
- 1:09:55the good guy. That all kind of all tax.
- 1:09:57Checks. One of the motivations does make
- 1:10:00sense is she wants to eat a bird because she's a cat and it's
- 1:10:05interesting how they play the Katniss into a character as you
- 1:10:08should. She licks herself.
- 1:10:09Yes, she has a bad. Leader that scene, she goes.
- 1:10:11Yeah, which is probably a bit of a let down for the Penguin.
- 1:10:14Sure. What's a woman Says you're gonna
- 1:10:16have a bath right here myself. Like, OK, yeah, that's what cats
- 1:10:19do. I've seen it.
- 1:10:20Totally. I've seen it.
- 1:10:21He says first, of course, that this is just the pussy that he
- 1:10:23was hoping to see. Yeah.
- 1:10:25And again, this is a PG movie. It's just push that line a
- 1:10:28little bit. I mean, which I like.
- 1:10:30So of course I have no issue. Absolutely.
- 1:10:31And at 13, I didn't have an issue with it.
- 1:10:33But the kid on Oprah had an issue.
- 1:10:34With it, well, there's a difference between the, say,
- 1:10:37violence and the sexual overtones.
- 1:10:40If you don't get it, it doesn't matter if it's over your head.
- 1:10:43Yeah, yeah, it's So that's OK. I mean, they do that with a lot
- 1:10:45of animated movies too. Right, a lot of pussy talk in
- 1:10:48Toy Story 2I. Think I haven't seen it run it
- 1:10:52for me. I didn't pick up on all that.
- 1:10:54But yeah, just they're adults and times.
- 1:10:57But I'm an adult and I was watching it for all checked out
- 1:11:00for. Me, what kids like you though is
- 1:11:01the shadow puppet. And this is a scene that I
- 1:11:03really like. And I remember back from the day
- 1:11:04that the image of that where he takes 2 slippers, makes the bat
- 1:11:07and he makes the bat in the ceiling and the shadows, like I
- 1:11:10dig that. It's good stuff.
- 1:11:11And that's a real bird. She actually ate that bird.
- 1:11:13Are you serious? She put it in her mouth.
- 1:11:16It's good for her. Yeah, I watched the special
- 1:11:18feature. But since she didn't eat the
- 1:11:20bird, she's probably hungry. She's still hungry.
- 1:11:24He's still hungry, and she happens to run into Bruce Wayne.
- 1:11:27Yeah, They have this moment when they're both talking about their
- 1:11:31alter egos. Yeah.
- 1:11:33And they're making sense, but not really making sense to each
- 1:11:36other. When Bruce looks behind him and
- 1:11:37sees the newspaper article. Batman blows it.
- 1:11:40He didn't blow. It was like, it didn't blow it.
- 1:11:43Accurate. He's like offended by the media
- 1:11:44coverage of it, which I thought was funny, as he should have.
- 1:11:47And but the two end up for dinner at the Bruce Manor.
- 1:11:50An early dinner because she has somewhere.
- 1:11:51To She's got some place, he's got something.
- 1:11:53Well, he's not anything yet. That's right.
- 1:11:55I guess he's coming. Something pops up.
- 1:11:57It's a pretty awkward moment on the couch.
- 1:11:59Oh yeah. That's an interesting first
- 1:12:01date, but she is definitely a little, what's the word I want
- 1:12:05to say, aggressive, aggressive, unhinged.
- 1:12:10Oh yeah, yeah, some people like a.
- 1:12:12Little I think you do crazy, a little unhinged.
- 1:12:14I think we all do in our as we get older, we might be sort of
- 1:12:17less attracted to it or. Just less able to.
- 1:12:19Just label this. Yeah, able to, able to or too
- 1:12:23lazy to go through the whole rigorous of it all.
- 1:12:25Yeah, it's just too much. But he's going to give it a go.
- 1:12:29She's willing. I mean, there's a pretty steamy
- 1:12:32quick make out sesh and get to know each other's lips, which is
- 1:12:35going to play. It's going to play, I'm going to
- 1:12:36play. But they're not for too long on
- 1:12:39this. Couch No, because.
- 1:12:40Something comes up. Yeah, the ice Princess comes up.
- 1:12:42Yeah, sure. When you're talking about the
- 1:12:44Ice Princess, something comes up, Dave.
- 1:12:47She's gorgeous. Yes, that did happen and he's
- 1:12:51gotta go save her, even though I think he gets the sense that
- 1:12:54it's probably a trap. Yeah, I think you got to do it.
- 1:12:56The signal, you're going to do it.
- 1:12:57You got to do it. Yeah, Catwoman has to get there,
- 1:12:59I guess the survey what's happening and Batman has to go
- 1:13:02there to save the day. If you can, yeah, exactly.
- 1:13:04We got a cool scene which I enjoy and was in some of the
- 1:13:07marketing where basically Bruce goes to the Batman closet.
- 1:13:11Oh yes, yes, yes, yes, I did write.
- 1:13:13Something down for that. He's got a hanger full of bat
- 1:13:15suits. Get bat boots.
- 1:13:18I don't know if it's intended to be.
- 1:13:19One. I think so, but it's a little
- 1:13:21silly. Yeah, but he races to save the
- 1:13:23ice Princess who doesn't take. But it does give hang on one of
- 1:13:27the best lines, I think tell me she ends up on the rooftop.
- 1:13:31Yes, Catwoman has just disappeared.
- 1:13:34They set up Batman to take the fall guy she falls clearly looks
- 1:13:39from below that he pushed her, something Batman would do
- 1:13:43totally come on people. But Catwoman and Penguin are
- 1:13:47talking right afterward, and she says, I thought you were just
- 1:13:50going to scare her, he says. Well, she looked pretty scared
- 1:13:53to me. I just think that's just a funny
- 1:13:55line because it's pretty. You look pretty.
- 1:13:58Scared. Yeah, I love that.
- 1:13:59And we get Penguin flirting with Catwoman again.
- 1:14:02You. Sent it all that signals.
- 1:14:05Yeah. Do a lot of good impressions, by
- 1:14:08the way. You do a lot of his one I just
- 1:14:11love. I wouldn't touch it to scratch
- 1:14:12you. It's funny, just that
- 1:14:15relationship because it isn't really altogether right.
- 1:14:17They have the common goal, but they're not really in the same
- 1:14:20sphere, which I kind of enjoy their dynamic.
- 1:14:23Yeah, they they click. The Batman has to get out of
- 1:14:25town because like you said, they think he somehow, despite saving
- 1:14:30the city countless times, he's now a villain.
- 1:14:34So he gets this cool glider that's nice glider flies over
- 1:14:38the city and gets back in the Batmobile, which unfortunately
- 1:14:41has been hacked and we've got Penguin taken over the controls.
- 1:14:44Yeah, and his own little like. Toy if mall.
- 1:14:47Mall. That's it.
- 1:14:48Yeah, it's all thing. Yeah, yeah, it cuts you 1/4.
- 1:14:53Which made me chuckle because I was like, I think I've seen that
- 1:14:55kid in the malls in in 1990. It's just fun to watch.
- 1:14:58Totally. And he's really into it.
- 1:14:59He's rocking back. And forth you see the Oswald
- 1:15:01van. Don't come a knocking.
- 1:15:04Yeah, it's crazy. I really dig it.
- 1:15:06But yeah, Batman is basically now wrestling and trying to get
- 1:15:08out of it, trying to break the thing.
- 1:15:10He figures. It out, he figures it out.
- 1:15:13Pretty basic, yeah. Turns out, yeah, it's not that
- 1:15:15complex. Giant like candy?
- 1:15:17Cane coloured device. Yeah, yeah, rips it out just in
- 1:15:19time to put the brakes on. That's.
- 1:15:21Right. But he's done the benefit of
- 1:15:23seeing a CD. And I have to tell you, I was
- 1:15:25very excited to see C of Course 92.
- 1:15:28Yeah, I had a CD player in my car.
- 1:15:29Oh yeah, nice. I mean I have some there, but
- 1:15:32there was something about the. Something thickness of it.
- 1:15:36Shine. So yeah, he's recording the
- 1:15:38Penguin. I didn't realize that's what he
- 1:15:40was doing, but yeah, little foreshadowing.
- 1:15:43Yeah, come in handy next scene. I'm thinking how is he gonna get
- 1:15:46out of it? It did cross my mind.
- 1:15:48You have to get him on tape and I had thought of that and I see
- 1:15:52him with the CD and I didn't put the two together.
- 1:15:54Because you'll get it eventually.
- 1:15:56I don't think I watch it again. And it kind of pisses off
- 1:16:01Penguin. Yeah, he's frustrated by the
- 1:16:03whole thing. He's very.
- 1:16:04Frustrated. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:05Disappointed that he couldn't quite deliver.
- 1:16:07And that's how these movies and how this TV show goes.
- 1:16:10Something gets thwarted every time.
- 1:16:12Yeah. It's a word for a reason, but he
- 1:16:14has to deliver. That's right, his mayoral
- 1:16:17speech. That's right, he's still running
- 1:16:19for mayor. Running and that.
- 1:16:20Is a pretty good chance at this point.
- 1:16:21I would say, you know, tear in the streets.
- 1:16:24Yeah. What are you going to do?
- 1:16:25You going to specify? She gets up on the stage and he
- 1:16:27starts his speech. But Bruce is ready.
- 1:16:29Bruce and Alfred. Even Alfred has been enlisted to
- 1:16:32give him a hand here. I don't know what he's doing
- 1:16:34necessarily. But he looks like a podcaster.
- 1:16:36He does. He's got the headphones on.
- 1:16:39He's got. It, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:40And then new movie. I'm sure it will be.
- 1:16:41Yeah, that's his new thing. What's funny about this moment
- 1:16:44is Bruce takes his little elevator to go down to the Bat
- 1:16:49Cave. Alfred says I'll take the stairs
- 1:16:52and he gets there roughly 4 seconds after Bruce does.
- 1:16:59And I'm doing some calculations like, well, he's 35 years old,
- 1:17:02this guy's 80. It's about the same distance.
- 1:17:05Yeah. So it's kind of silly.
- 1:17:07Other than I like that that's the secret thing in the
- 1:17:09aquarium. It's just for show like this.
- 1:17:11Whole thing and the time it takes for him to put his hand
- 1:17:13in, you'd be already down there. Yeah, I'll just go.
- 1:17:18At least it wasn't Leslie Nielsen putting his hand.
- 1:17:20That's true. Aquarium.
- 1:17:21Some fighting fish, you know. Bet you do.
- 1:17:26And of course, you love a good hack.
- 1:17:28I've been known to hack. Know you haven't, you know?
- 1:17:31Hacking as you know and. You hate to hack.
- 1:17:33You hate to be hacked. You hate it on film.
- 1:17:36But ultimately Bruce Wayne jams the signal and hacks the audio
- 1:17:40and plays the CD in which she recorded and played the city
- 1:17:44like a hop from hell. Yeah, you got to watch what you
- 1:17:46say these days. You.
- 1:17:47Know. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:17:48It kind of puts the crowd against.
- 1:17:50Them, it turns out, at least back then, politicians saying
- 1:17:54bad things about people, yeah. Was a negative.
- 1:17:57It was a negative. Now it's perfect.
- 1:17:58I think we should go back to having tomatoes.
- 1:18:01And eggs. And what I thought was lettuce.
- 1:18:04Well, yeah, have a little salad. Yeah.
- 1:18:06Yeah, yeah. And sweep.
- 1:18:07Up and I thought it was silly that all of a sudden they had
- 1:18:10these items because you don't see it in the crowd when you get
- 1:18:12those shots. All of a sudden, he's.
- 1:18:14Getting pelted but I love how they call it out.
- 1:18:16Why? How is everybody bringing?
- 1:18:18Tomatoes to these guys. So it makes fun of itself for
- 1:18:21that moment and so makes it funny, which I appreciate a
- 1:18:23little humor in these movies where I don't think there's a
- 1:18:26place for humor in maybe the Nolan films so much.
- 1:18:29I think there's a little bit more.
- 1:18:30Yeah, no, for sure. Nolan is not known for condo.
- 1:18:33Funny, right now he doesn't have his movies.
- 1:18:36But Penguin is fed up. He doesn't know what to do.
- 1:18:38He runs away and he goes back to where he's comfortable, back to
- 1:18:41the sewer. Yeah, where people are ready to
- 1:18:43greet him. Hey, Oswald.
- 1:18:44And he's cutting his oh, yeah, suit off.
- 1:18:47And he says, I am not Oswald. I am Penguin 1 auto man.
- 1:18:51I'm an animal. It's a reference to the Elephant
- 1:18:54Man movie. Animal human being from the
- 1:18:58Elephant Man. I thought some Seinfeld.
- 1:19:00David Lynch But if you really look at that section of the
- 1:19:03movie, that's like 9 minutes, like, you know, spread out over
- 1:19:07an hour. But there's like so little of
- 1:19:09that campaign and that arc and that character development and
- 1:19:13whatever else. If you cut out some of the
- 1:19:15origin, you might have had a little bit more room for that.
- 1:19:17Now you need it. It's this is the stuff that
- 1:19:19starts to feel rushed. So that happens, and then we cut
- 1:19:21to the ballroom. Oh yeah, the ballroom, right?
- 1:19:24I think it's like it's Christmas party.
- 1:19:26It's his Max Charade Ball. Oh, that's clever.
- 1:19:29Yeah, I really like that. Yeah.
- 1:19:30Which I think is funny or interesting that the only two
- 1:19:33people without a mask and without a costume are Selena,
- 1:19:37Kyle and. Bruce Well, that's funny because
- 1:19:39they wear masks. All the time and the psychology
- 1:19:42of it would say this is their mask.
- 1:19:44Ohv, that's. If you think about this
- 1:19:47character, when we meet him, he's in an attic, all alone in
- 1:19:50the dark. It's like that person isn't even
- 1:19:53really a person. That one doesn't exist.
- 1:19:55It's like the Batman is when he's alive.
- 1:19:56So the reading if you wanted to get that is like.
- 1:19:59It's an option. His Bruce Wayne is the mask and
- 1:20:02he's more Batman. Batman and sort of later years.
- 1:20:04Yeah, absolutely. But either way, it's a great
- 1:20:07scene. I love the look of it, the
- 1:20:08opulence of it, and I really enjoy the Susie and the Banshees
- 1:20:11song on your Spotify. Imagine it is I I love the song
- 1:20:15face to Face it's called and those performances I think are
- 1:20:17better than what you would expect out of a comic book
- 1:20:20movie. I really am impressed by these
- 1:20:22two in this scene. There's a mistletoe, yes, which
- 1:20:26are deadly if you eat, but a kiss can also be deadly.
- 1:20:30Can be deadly if you eat it as. Well, and they said this to each
- 1:20:33other before I. Think yeah, during the fight,
- 1:20:35during their. First, these words have been
- 1:20:37spoken. I recognized it.
- 1:20:39Yeah, they're they're reusing part of the.
- 1:20:41Script Yeah 2 for one sale. And then they have, like, this
- 1:20:45realization, skate. Well, you're Catwoman, You're
- 1:20:46Batman. Yeah.
- 1:20:47And she's like, well, do we have to fight?
- 1:20:49Best line in the movie I love. Oh, really?
- 1:20:51Maybe not best, yeah, but it's like high up there.
- 1:20:53I love it because it's like they don't know what to do and I
- 1:20:56really like their chemistry, particularly in this scene in
- 1:20:57general, the whole. Movie.
- 1:20:58I call it the top ten moments. Sure.
- 1:21:00Ten. Wow.
- 1:21:01OK, there you have it. But Penguins gonna cut the party
- 1:21:04short with his ultimate plan. Yeah, he wants to come to
- 1:21:08fruition at this point. He's killed the clown.
- 1:21:10Yes. For questioning his plan to
- 1:21:14kidnap and kill and kill, yes, that's.
- 1:21:17Important. All the first born children of
- 1:21:19Gotham. Yeah.
- 1:21:20And the guy, he's like, this is a little dark.
- 1:21:22He called it. He called.
- 1:21:23It he's not. Wrong.
- 1:21:24He's not wrong, but he's dead. Now, yes, yes, yeah.
- 1:21:27But yeah. And so the plan is ultimately
- 1:21:29pretty sinister. Again, for a kids movie, You're
- 1:21:32like, Jesus, I'm going to gather all the children, put them on a
- 1:21:35train through the city, and then I'm going to drown them in toxic
- 1:21:38waste. I can see why they're on Oprah.
- 1:21:40Yes, what I found very unbelievable, but I really don't
- 1:21:44care, is the fact that he's able to come up from his layer or
- 1:21:49from below. You can travel the sewer,
- 1:21:51sewers, go everywhere. I don't need a plumber to know
- 1:21:53that. But in the centre of the ball he
- 1:21:56comes up with that duck with a good hydraulic.
- 1:21:59Yeah, yeah, the best hydraulic. Yeah.
- 1:22:01So that's just very convenient, but it's a great entrance.
- 1:22:03It is a big entrance. A huge.
- 1:22:05Entrance. He wasn't invited, so we.
- 1:22:06Had to crash. He had to crash.
- 1:22:08Yeah, he's got some good lines. Totally.
- 1:22:10I love the Penguins costumes. You don't see a lot of it now,
- 1:22:15but there are two sitting with them and they have like, Roman
- 1:22:18hats almost wearing it. I thought, these are real
- 1:22:21Penguins. Oh yeah.
- 1:22:22And they've dressed them up and I'm like, this is awesome.
- 1:22:25Like these innocent animals are ready to battle if need.
- 1:22:29So I thought it was really cute actually.
- 1:22:30And there's some that are animatronics, there's some,
- 1:22:33there might be some real, I'm not sure, but definitely
- 1:22:35animatronics. They all looked.
- 1:22:36Real. They look good.
- 1:22:38In 4K too, so it's impressive. Everything in this movie I think
- 1:22:41looks great. And of course, Penguin wants.
- 1:22:42Yep, Yep. And luckily Max says no, no no,
- 1:22:46take me. Yeah, he gives him a good
- 1:22:48reasons. He's like me, I ripped you off.
- 1:22:50I screwed you over. Like, you know, like actually
- 1:22:53it's a good point. You are an asshole.
- 1:22:54Yeah, I'll take you. Why not?
- 1:22:56You're the problem here. And back to the Arctic world we
- 1:23:00go. And this is where I could see
- 1:23:01you thinking the movies a little bit rushed.
- 1:23:04Right. Everything starts to end and get
- 1:23:06thwarted like right away. So the Penguins big elaborate
- 1:23:09plan that he's been spending the whole movie planning and
- 1:23:11organizing and setting up 20 seconds, 20 seconds, the trains
- 1:23:15going down Gotham Batman's like no, no, not happening.
- 1:23:18OK, so that's. Over.
- 1:23:19Yeah, give it. Give him a letter.
- 1:23:21That's right. What's Plan B?
- 1:23:22Oh yeah. OK, yeah, send the Penguins.
- 1:23:25Out. And fully loaded, we're going to
- 1:23:27blow up the whole city. That's great from filmmaking
- 1:23:29perspective. Like Grand.
- 1:23:31Absolutely. Big one.
- 1:23:33And then Batman with a couple of throw it again, thwarts it
- 1:23:38again. And then the fight with Penguin
- 1:23:42is 30 seconds. Yeah, it's not even like really
- 1:23:45all that interesting. And I love the radars in this
- 1:23:48movie, by the way. Yeah, they're actually pictures.
- 1:23:50Of the Penguins. The Penguins, yeah.
- 1:23:51And then Penguin falls through the roof.
- 1:23:53And to be honest with you, I had similar issues with the original
- 1:23:57Batman as well. The Joker falls off the church
- 1:24:00and that's it. The cathedral.
- 1:24:02And that's kind of it. Like there's nothing really
- 1:24:03super, really special. There's not big battle sequence
- 1:24:07or anything to kind of end. Not that you need it, but it
- 1:24:09kind of ends with a bit of a thud.
- 1:24:11Yeah, in this case. So I just thought like your,
- 1:24:15your, this is your main villain and the payoff, I just thought
- 1:24:18it was weak. OHT but those explosions.
- 1:24:20Great experience for sure. And that button, big red button.
- 1:24:24Absolutely, but it does open the door for Selena.
- 1:24:26Now for Catwoman. It seems that maybe the duel
- 1:24:29between Catwoman and Max. Is really the showcase kind of
- 1:24:33tells you that right which has been set up longer I suppose,
- 1:24:37but has spent less screen time. So there is there at the
- 1:24:40beginning of the movie sort of the first relationship we see.
- 1:24:43But I just it's a weird set up at this end.
- 1:24:47But she is on some sort of barge.
- 1:24:49It seems large to attack Max. Yeah, and Batman is trying to
- 1:24:54talk her out of. It.
- 1:24:55Yeah, not going to. Take no.
- 1:24:57And it's so interesting to me that he reveals himself, OK?
- 1:25:02Not, you know, not you sicko. But like, take it takes his
- 1:25:08mask. Off but you get that sense OK
- 1:25:10well no one in this room is going to be alive that's.
- 1:25:13Something's going on, yeah. Because he cannot be revealed
- 1:25:15like. That, that's right.
- 1:25:16I like what Bruce is saying to her.
- 1:25:18He's a man of reason. We don't have to be this.
- 1:25:19You're the same as me. We get it.
- 1:25:21We can make this work, you know. Whatever, come home with me.
- 1:25:24And so comment by the way, it's worth it.
- 1:25:27She's off her rocker. I mean, she's maybe a little
- 1:25:29little freaky. She needs one of those rooms.
- 1:25:34Or Summer Fair again, great performance.
- 1:25:38Nor give me Yeah. She wrestles against herself and
- 1:25:40then ultimately decides that Max has to go.
- 1:25:42Yeah. In a weird way.
- 1:25:44Yeah, so tell me about what your thoughts are on this Nine Lives
- 1:25:48thing. It's like a cliche with cats,
- 1:25:50but this takes it to another level.
- 1:25:52It does. Phillip.
- 1:25:53I didn't love it, but at this point.
- 1:25:56OK. And for the penny?
- 1:25:58Exactly, Phillip. So couple rounds off 1-2, you
- 1:26:02know, buck your shoe, whatever. Well, she's already died twice.
- 1:26:05Three times, actually. 4 Going to heaven, you know.
- 1:26:07Yeah, it's 45 still alive, 677 going to heaven.
- 1:26:12All good girls go to heaven. Yeah, she.
- 1:26:14Still has two left. Yeah, and she's gonna save one
- 1:26:17for next year. Yeah, for Christmas, I think,
- 1:26:19she said. So this has to go.
- 1:26:21So she loses her eighth life electrocuting him.
- 1:26:24Yeah, basically grabbing some sort of electrical current again
- 1:26:27on some sort of barge. Could get the Taser and just
- 1:26:29stuck the Taser in his mouth. She did that.
- 1:26:31It was with the. Taser.
- 1:26:32Oh, was it? Yeah.
- 1:26:34That was the current. Oh, gotcha.
- 1:26:36Yeah, it's Jaws 2. Which showed 2 on CBC Radio.
- 1:26:38The current yeah yeah, sure. Matt Galloway shout out there.
- 1:26:44Yeah, yeah, yeah. I did appreciate the makeup
- 1:26:46results of Max. Hmm, after being electrocuted?
- 1:26:50Absolutely. Looks great.
- 1:26:51Yeah. The only thing I had a problem
- 1:26:52with it is it took Batman way too long to find him.
- 1:26:55Like he's sort of like sifting through all this rubble and
- 1:26:58debris. A long.
- 1:26:59Day. It's a little thing, but it's
- 1:27:00sort of like this movie is bizarrely wrapping up in weird
- 1:27:03ways, so it's a little bit bumping.
- 1:27:04It's an odd nitpick. Yeah, but what I will honestly,
- 1:27:08is probably my favorite sequence in the movie is what happens
- 1:27:12next. So Penguin shows up.
- 1:27:13He's risen if you will, and I don't know why but I remember
- 1:27:18being quite emotional at 13 watching this.
- 1:27:21OK, there you go through. Some changes or not, in a
- 1:27:23situation where I'm like crying, it's not obviously that level.
- 1:27:26No judgment, buddy, but I'm watching it this time.
- 1:27:28The sadness of that character rising from the dead effectively
- 1:27:34and bleeding and all the sort of.
- 1:27:37He's got 2. Secretions and so forth.
- 1:27:39The mercury coming. Out coming out of his mouth and
- 1:27:43obviously trying to be vengeful and reaching for the umbrella
- 1:27:46and accidentally grabbing the cute 1 is like grab the cute
- 1:27:49one. Yeah, there's 12 in there.
- 1:27:50They were. They're labeled no.
- 1:27:52You don't. First problem you gotta label.
- 1:27:53Get a label. Maker.
- 1:27:54And then he's staggering and he sort of gets distracted and a
- 1:27:57cool drink of water. Yeah.
- 1:27:59And then collapsing and watching the Penguins kind of gather and
- 1:28:03take them in this procession. Yeah.
- 1:28:05It's a gorgeous score. Gut wrenching.
- 1:28:07It's A beautiful moment. And it's so grotesquely
- 1:28:11appealing. I can't explain why, but I find
- 1:28:13that 3 minutes to be really engaging and bizarrely emotional
- 1:28:19from a performance perspective. I don't know if you felt
- 1:28:21anything like. That Yeah, no, I don't disagree.
- 1:28:23I think I think it's a fitting end for that character.
- 1:28:27Yeah. It all felt like yeah, yeah.
- 1:28:29It's a sad though. It's almost entirely beautiful.
- 1:28:31Weird way it's batting above its average.
- 1:28:33Yeah, baseball thing. Yeah.
- 1:28:35Well, you know. Sure, tis the season a little
- 1:28:37bit more than the other death that we got with Max, ironically
- 1:28:40because we didn't like the first death of Penguins, but this
- 1:28:43becomes a big thing and I think it's a good capper.
- 1:28:47And I think to what you've said earlier, at the end of the day,
- 1:28:50he was a bad guy, obviously wants to kill all the children.
- 1:28:53But I think that what you alluded to earlier with the
- 1:28:56parents and like trying to find himself, I think that this is
- 1:28:59where that undercurrent, even if it doesn't in his character, it
- 1:29:03isn't his performance. And so the fact that he has
- 1:29:06lived that life of isolation and torment and relegated to the
- 1:29:10sewers and all of that pathos and sadness of that character
- 1:29:14and then dying the way he does with only his Penguins to sort
- 1:29:17of take care of him in a weird way.
- 1:29:20I don't know, there's just something about that I fucking
- 1:29:22just really connected with And I, I've always connected like
- 1:29:25for 30 years, like still do since I saw it was like, God,
- 1:29:28that's still really delivers in ways that even if I don't watch
- 1:29:31the whole rest of the movie, I could watch that 3 or 4 minutes
- 1:29:35and still feel something pretty powerful.
- 1:29:37Imagine you feel it more too now than you would a 13.
- 1:29:39Year old, sure, absolutely. The residence of that is
- 1:29:42definitely gone deeper for sure experiences and such.
- 1:29:44So some things. You did do the things.
- 1:29:48That's right. Yeah.
- 1:29:49So. Finishes strong for you.
- 1:29:50Good. I think so.
- 1:29:51And then obviously the wraps up and Fast forward another year.
- 1:29:55Then we see Catwoman, or we think we do what we do.
- 1:29:58That's right, Bruce thinks he sees a cat or shadow sorry of
- 1:30:02her and then finds out it's a cat.
- 1:30:05I like that a lot. And and we get a little, you
- 1:30:08know, if he could have one wish peace on earth, goodwill towards
- 1:30:13men and women. Is that word for word?
- 1:30:16What Whistler? Says exactly what Whistler says.
- 1:30:18Absolutely. Same here.
- 1:30:20Same year I think. Pretty sure.
- 1:30:22It is actually, yeah. I was looking up 92 movies.
- 1:30:24Yeah, what's there? What a RIP off.
- 1:30:28Daniel Waters or Phil Alden Robinson who said it.
- 1:30:32First good question. But I like it.
- 1:30:34It's a good ending. Score rises, pans up, we see a
- 1:30:37CGI Catwoman. Yeah, you would imagine there is
- 1:30:41going to be a. Catwoman totally a setup for
- 1:30:42this sequel. But not in any two necessarily.
- 1:30:45I guess not. Move on, not till 2000
- 1:30:47something. So here we are David.
- 1:30:48Now we've done another Batman movie in the books.
- 1:30:51What are your final thoughts on the film here?
- 1:30:53What's your experience? I know you said wait till the
- 1:30:55end. Here it is.
- 1:30:56Well, here we are. Yeah, this is our 7th Burton
- 1:30:59movie. Just kidding, I counted 4 while
- 1:31:01I was thinking earlier. We did Pee Wee's Big Adventure 5
- 1:31:04then and we did the two Batmans and we did Big Fish Beer Juice
- 1:31:08and we did Beetlejuice. Yeah, you might be right.
- 1:31:11Yeah, you might be right. What I'm right about though is I
- 1:31:15think this is a. Better movie than the original.
- 1:31:19OK, I think you're right. Whoa, I no, no, no.
- 1:31:23I figured you would be with the masses like you usually are.
- 1:31:27You and IMDb just line up. Sure, somehow you guys are in
- 1:31:30cahoots, I think. Not that it doesn't have any
- 1:31:33faults, I think it is gorgeous in terms of cinematography and
- 1:31:39set design. It just holds up so good.
- 1:31:43I'm really impressed by that. I love all the characters and
- 1:31:47they went that extra mile to give these characters some,
- 1:31:51well, character, you know, Which I don't really think they did in
- 1:31:55the first one. The original, I don't know if I
- 1:31:58said it during the episode, but I think the editing was a bit of
- 1:32:00a mess. You didn't mention.
- 1:32:01That did I believe this one, Although there are some pacing
- 1:32:05issues, it is a little bit longer movie and like you said,
- 1:32:08there's maybe places you can kind of fix that.
- 1:32:11That would be my only sort of gripe about it.
- 1:32:14But I love the story. So ultimately I think it is a
- 1:32:17solid movie that holds up and it's an odd case of the sequel
- 1:32:23being, in my opinion, better than the first one.
- 1:32:26If you can even be close to the first one, it's a win.
- 1:32:29So I think a lot of people would say it's competes with the
- 1:32:34original. It's certainly not a huge drop
- 1:32:36off. I think you're bang on.
- 1:32:38We've done a lot of sequels this year.
- 1:32:39If you look back on the season, we have done a sequel heavy.
- 1:32:41We've talked about certainly like Jurassic Park, right, that
- 1:32:44drop. Off that's true, yes.
- 1:32:45Going from the original to Lost World is like a disaster to.
- 1:32:49Me, it is for me if you watch them back-to-back.
- 1:32:52Sure. Yeah, because I.
- 1:32:53Remember clearly. Oh my God.
- 1:32:55Yeah. And so in this case, I think
- 1:32:57you're exactly right. I think this movie does
- 1:32:59everything that the first movie does, but does it better,
- 1:33:02Correct. It does it bigger, it does it
- 1:33:04broader. As much as I love Jack Nicholson
- 1:33:07as the Joker, I think DeVito is phenomenal as the Penguin and I
- 1:33:10think FIFA really excellent as Catwoman.
- 1:33:12I think Batman has nothing to do in this that will say if there
- 1:33:15is a fault is that the Batman character and the Bruce
- 1:33:18character aren't really integral to the thing.
- 1:33:21What was that like in the first one for his on screen?
- 1:33:24I think because remember he was on more often.
- 1:33:27Just him in the Joker. Right.
- 1:33:28It's just him and the Joker and his origin story, and I think
- 1:33:32here there's just too many things to cut away to, and
- 1:33:34frankly too many more interesting things.
- 1:33:36Batman is not interesting. So I don't necessarily expect to
- 1:33:39have a ton of Batman. Stuff as long as the other
- 1:33:41stuff. Interesting.
- 1:33:42But I do think he's given a little short shrift just because
- 1:33:46Max is so entertaining and interesting and Penguin and
- 1:33:49Catwoman are all really cool. Yeah, it's too much movie for
- 1:33:53the two hours and 4 minutes, so I think I would like it to just
- 1:33:55be longer movie so that these things can breathe a little
- 1:33:58more, but recognizing that's not the movie they're going to make.
- 1:34:01So it's a gripe, but it's not like it screwed something.
- 1:34:04Up. It's his script.
- 1:34:05He's so mad he didn't show up for the That's right.
- 1:34:07But I love walking in it, I love the performances and I love the
- 1:34:11style, like I said. So I agree with you 100%.
- 1:34:14The first one will always have a place in my heart because of its
- 1:34:17impact on me and the cultural phenomenon behind it.
- 1:34:20Sure, yeah, this doesn't have any of that.
- 1:34:22But it's a better movie, I think, for sure.
- 1:34:24So. I'm I'm surprised to hear that
- 1:34:26from you because, well, you're usually wrong.
- 1:34:30Yeah, so it's not it's not untrue.
- 1:34:33But folks, thanks for listening. I hope you enjoyed it and hope
- 1:34:36this episode was better than the last one.
- 1:34:38Yeah, you. Did alright, definitely better
- 1:34:40audio. Better audio, period.
- 1:34:42There's nothing else. It'll sound better in your ears,
- 1:34:45folks. We do appreciate it.
