That was fun. Lucas: Yeah, I loved that. And I think we can go a bit deeper into swimming today. I remember you said you were nervous about swimming in the sea. Luna: I still am! But I want to learn how to say 'I want to swim' in Cantonese, because maybe if I say it, I'll feel braver. Lucas: Totally. That sounds a bit like 'n-go seung yau seui'. Lucas: Close, but careful: 我想游水. 我想 means 'I want', 游水 is 'to swim'. So literally 'I want swim water'. Luna: 我想游水. I think I got it. So if I'm at the beach and I want to go in, I say 我想游水. Lucas: Exactly. Now, what if the water feels cold? You can say 啲水好凍. 啲水 means 'the water', 好凍 is 'very cold'. Luna: 啲水好凍. That's useful. I can imagine dipping my toe and saying that. Lucas: Right. So repeat after me: 啲水好凍. Luna: 啲水好凍. Okay, I think I can remember that. Lucas: Now, if you want to say 'I can swim', you say 我識游水. 識 means 'know how to'. Luna: 我識游水. But Lucas, I don't actually know how to swim well. Lucas: Ooh, that's okay. You could say 我唔識游水 — 'I don't know how to swim'. But for now, let's stick with the positive. 我識游水. Luna: 我識游水. I'll practice that. And what about asking someone else: 'Can you swim?' Lucas: That's 你識唔識游水. Literally 'you know not know swim water'. Luna: 你識唔識游水. That's a mouthful. Let me try: 你識唔識游水. Lucas: Great job! And if you want to invite someone to swim together, say 我哋一齊游水. 我哋 means 'we', 一齊 means 'together'. Luna: 我哋一齊游水. That sounds nice. Like 'let's swim together'. Lucas: Exactly. So let's run through all five phrases one more time. First: 我想游水. Luna: 我想游水. Lucas: 啲水好凍. Luna: 啲水好凍. Lucas: 我識游水. Luna: 我識游水. Lucas: 你識唔識游水. Luna: 你識唔識游水. Lucas: 我哋一齊游水. Luna: 我哋一齊游水. I love that one. It sounds like an invitation. Lucas: It is. So imagine you're at the beach with a friend. You could say 我想游水, then 你識唔識游水, and if they say yes, 我哋一齊游水. Luna: That's a perfect little conversation. I'm going to practice that in my head. Lucas: And don't forget, if the water is cold, you can say 啲水好凍. Luna: Right.
