Transcript
- 0:00Listen, never give up on your dreams, guys, because I can't believe I'm doing a Why Not Wednesday with you, Karina.
- 0:04I'm actually like freaking out right now.
- 0:07This is your weekly girlfriend chat, the kind that we all crave, where we can show up exactly as we are, laugh until we cry, get honest about the things we're navigating.
- 0:17and all the private girl talk that we need more of.
- 0:20No pressure, no perfection, just real women like us, sharing real stories with real connections.
- 0:27Over the years of Tonidab, I've learned that the most transformative moments don't always happen in a workout.
- 0:33They happen in those conversations before and after.
- 0:36when we realize we're all going through something, when we feel seen.
- 0:40And that's what Tone It Down is built on.
- 0:43My intention is simple, to help you tune back into yourself, to quiet the noise, and to remind you that you're allowed to evolve.
- 0:52This is Tone It Down.
- 0:54Tone It Down.
- 0:59Hello, my friends.
- 1:00Welcome back to Tone It Down.
- 1:02This is Karina, your girl.
- 1:05All right.
- 1:05So this week's podcast, I had to do a repeat with Hannah Aaron Brown because I'm realizing that a lot of you don't know that I actually bought Tone It Up back.
- 1:18It has been less than a year and I've been working my booty off behind the scenes, fixing the text off, fixing like so much, so much has gone on.
- 1:27And I had this conversation with Hannah earlier this year and we really get into like what has been going on at Tonered Up.
- 1:37And I met Hannah because a few of my friends and people I know were texting and DMing me like, have you seen this TikTok lore?
- 1:45And I was like, I don't know.
- 1:46I don't really go on TikTok.
- 1:47Anyways, we dive deep into everything in this conversation.
- 1:50It was when I was in LA and had the pleasure of meeting the wonderful Hannah.
- 1:55If you don't follow her, follow her.
- 1:57She's just a great being.
- 2:00It just goes to show through the Toner Up community how you can meet like really cool people.
- 2:06And Hannah is one of them.
- 2:07So I wanted to bring this conversation up to the top again for you so you can kind of
- 2:14Like if you haven't caught up yet with what's going on at Tone It Up, then now you can again.
- 2:20And also next week I'm headed out to Las Vegas.
- 2:25My friend Jewel does a summit there, a mental health summit called the Not Alone Summit.
- 2:31And I was thinking about having a little Tone It Up walk and talk.
- 2:35I never want more than a few people there just to keep it really intimate and
- 2:39If you're in Vegas, DM me on at Kareena Dawn or the Tone It Up account and let me know.
- 2:46I'm thinking about Monday.
- 2:48Let me know if you have plans Monday morning.
- 2:51Enjoy this episode.
- 2:52Share it with everyone.
- 2:54Thank you, Hannah, for going viral and investigating the Tone It Up lore.
- 3:02We're here.
- 3:04Tone it down and... Oh my gosh, and not aspirational.
- 3:08We're sharing this podcast, Little Colabi, for the first Why Not Wednesday.
- 3:12Oh, God.
- 3:15Listen to that.
- 3:17I know.
- 3:18First Why Not Wednesday in a very long time.
- 3:21Listen, never give up on your dreams, guys, because I can't believe I'm doing a Why Not Wednesday with you, Karina.
- 3:26I'm actually freaking out right now.
- 3:28I haven't stopped smiling since we saw each other today.
- 3:31Okay, so a little backup here.
- 3:35Hannah, I met through social, obviously.
- 3:39So you know I'm not on TikTok.
- 3:41No.
- 3:42And then I kept getting text messages from my friends who are on TikTok.
- 3:46And be like, are you okay?
- 3:47Like, what's going on?
- 3:48What?
- 3:50No, even Afra, Jewel's manager, was like, hey girl.
- 3:54And I called her and she's like, did you see this TikTok?
- 3:57And tone it up lore.
- 3:58And I'm like, I don't know.
- 4:00And so I went on there and I binge watched.
- 4:03And so did Desiree, who's behind the camera, her head of marketing.
- 4:07We're like, wow, okay.
- 4:09Number one.
- 4:10I was like, she's good.
- 4:12Even Bobby was like, she's good at this.
- 4:14She needs to be an investigative reporter.
- 4:17Oh, my God.
- 4:17Thank you.
- 4:18I know.
- 4:18You did call Bobby a douche, but he's a big fan.
- 4:21Oh, my God.
- 4:21Did I call him a douche?
- 4:23You heard someone else.
- 4:24Oh, someone in the comments did.
- 4:25Yeah.
- 4:26But we do have a call to Bobby later.
- 4:27No, I can't wait.
- 4:28So anyways, after like 20-something episodes, I messaged you on TikTok.
- 4:35I freaked out.
- 4:37You did.
- 4:38And I was like, hey, do you want to talk?
- 4:42I was just interested because there's all of these questions and so many things that over the years have popped up that I haven't answered or maybe couldn't answer.
- 4:53And so then we had a secret meetup.
- 4:57It was so fun.
- 4:58In LA when I was here last time and had a glass of wine or two and got to know each other.
- 5:04It was so fun.
- 5:05I was like so surprised and happy to hear from you.
- 5:08And also I was like, what a badass that she was able to watch like a bajillion videos of like me like picking apart everything, like you and Kat and Tone It Up.
- 5:18But also like after listening to your book, I was like, of course she's brave enough to do that.
- 5:21You've done a lot of hard things in your life.
- 5:24Thank you.
- 5:24You're welcome.
- 5:25Yeah.
- 5:25It was a little nerve wracking, but nothing I haven't experienced in all of my life or the past 16 years.
- 5:31Mm-hmm.
- 5:32So here we are.
- 5:33Yeah.
- 5:33That time we met for happy hour.
- 5:35It's like, shall we podcast together?
- 5:38So we're going to have a conversation.
- 5:41I'm going to let you take the reins.
- 5:43Oh, my God.
- 5:44We're going to sip some wine here.
- 5:45This is truly my dream come true.
- 5:48Like, I manifested this, I think.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:52Let's go.
- 5:53Okay.
- 5:53Can I ask, first and foremost, a lot of people, when I made these videos, there was this rumor that TAU, you weren't actually one of the people who started it.
- 6:02Your business partner and her husband started it and you were hired as a Craigslist model.
- 6:06You have been a fitness model before.
- 6:08However, I know the truth, but can you clear this up, please?
- 6:12Yes.
- 6:13So the Craigslist rumor was our first employee was hired off of Craigslist.
- 6:19Mm-hmm.
- 6:20So the first time I heard that rumor was years and years ago, how me and Kat didn't found the company together.
- 6:26There were some rumors of private equity, wanted to create, tone it up.
- 6:31It is completely false.
- 6:33And then there was other rumors that I was hired on Craigslist.
- 6:37So when you put that on TikTok lore, I went to my attorney of 16 years ago.
- 6:42I'm not going to say his name, but he is the attorney for Kendrick Lamar.
- 6:45He was back then.
- 6:46Oh, wow.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:47And I messaged him and I was like, can you send me the articles of organization for Tone It Up in 2009?
- 6:57And he immediately within 30 minutes was like, no questions asked.
- 7:00Here you go.
- 7:02That is gorgeous.
- 7:03So you have it in print.
- 7:05You have proof that you are a founder of Tone It Up.
- 7:0850-50.
- 7:08Hell yeah.
- 7:09No one else.
- 7:10Hell yeah.
- 7:11I will show you.
- 7:12I can't wait to see these ancient texts.
- 7:16Sorry, not ancient.
- 7:17Not that long ago.
- 7:19What do you think made Tone It Up such a success in the early days?
- 7:23Authenticity.
- 7:24We literally were friends who met at the gym.
- 7:27That's the other thing.
- 7:28We actually met at the Equinox in Manhattan Beach.
- 7:32I was newly single, moved from Marina Del Rey to Manhattan Beach and was just working out all the time while getting ready for shoots and stuff.
- 7:42And she was a trainer there.
- 7:45And we met and just became friends and had a passion for fitness and wanting to really...
- 7:53Offer something to women that can make them feel better.
- 7:56And that has never changed for either of us through the years.
- 8:01Damn.
- 8:02When did it, like, click?
- 8:04Was there a moment where you guys were like, holy shit, we've, like, created something really special that's growing, like, insanely fast?
- 8:10Or was it sort of like baby steps and then one day you were like, you looked around and you were like, damn.
- 8:14Damn.
- 8:15So we were in the beginning of YouTube and Instagram wasn't even around yet, I don't think, right?
- 8:20Yeah, I think it came in like 2012.
- 8:23Okay, so three years in.
- 8:24Yeah.
- 8:25So with my background, I was traveling the world as a triathlete, a host, sports and fitness modeling, certified trainer, all these things.
- 8:34And then she was on...
- 8:36YouTube with another company at the time.
- 8:38So she actually introduced me to YouTube.
- 8:40I was like, isn't that like a music platform?
- 8:43I was like way back in the day.
- 8:44So we just decided to start making music videos.
- 8:51I didn't do music videos together.
- 8:52I'm like, they are music videos to me because I've watched them a million times.
- 8:55I love them so much.
- 8:57I mean, I also feel like just making fitness accessible to women in a way that was like fun and like girly and silly and not like this serious, like gate kept kind of vibe was really special.
- 9:08Yeah.
- 9:09And that's important to point out because myself, even to this day, I'm a little clumsy, a little awkward.
- 9:16I'm not.
- 9:17I'm like, same.
- 9:17Yeah.
- 9:19And that's okay.
- 9:20Yeah.
- 9:20So you shouldn't be made fun of for that.
- 9:23Or just if I work out and when I do, I want to have fun.
- 9:26I want to enjoy what I'm doing.
- 9:28I want to do it with friends.
- 9:30Even in the trailer for Tone It Down, I mentioned how like the best conversations happen before and after the workout.
- 9:37And that's how it's always been for Tone It Up.
- 9:39And I think it finally clicked within like a year where women were like, wait,
- 9:45I want to have that relationship.
- 9:47I want to make friends through fitness because that's our similar interest, right?
- 9:53So meeting new friends through fitness is great versus, you know, especially now getting older.
- 10:02Having like a common interest.
- 10:03Yeah.
- 10:04Yeah.
- 10:04Yeah, that's what I love to do even in Austin.
- 10:06It's like, hey, do you want to meet up at the gym?
- 10:08Do you want to go for a walk on Lady Bird Lake?
- 10:11And it's just a nice way to get together with people.
- 10:13I love that.
- 10:14Yeah, I feel like being able to laugh through a workout, like I mess something up, like being able to laugh at myself and have fun.
- 10:22Like I felt like that energy, I hadn't seen it in other fitness spaces when I first found you guys.
- 10:27Like I was like a P90X girl and like with love and light to Tony Horton, it was intense.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:32I did do P90X.
- 10:33Also, who was the other one through Beachbody?
- 10:35Shaleen Johnson.
- 10:36Yes.
- 10:37Did you do Turbo Jam?
- 10:38No.
- 10:40Should I try it?
- 10:41Yeah.
- 10:41I mean, this is like 20 years ago that she probably put those out.
- 10:46But I loved P90X.
- 10:48It freaking crushed me.
- 10:51Hardcore.
- 10:51There are still tone it up moves, though, that like I would say I'm more fit now than I was in like 2014.
- 10:57But like there are certain moves that you guys do where I'm like, I can never do it.
- 11:01Like a burpee?
- 11:02Like I can't.
- 11:03Oh, I don't do burpees anymore.
- 11:04I don't do jump tucks and I don't do burpees.
- 11:06Everyone knows that.
- 11:07I don't know how to do them.
- 11:08I've never physically been able to do them.
- 11:10Wow.
- 11:10Yeah.
- 11:11So when did you find Tone It Up?
- 11:13I think like 2014, 2015.
- 11:14Like I had just graduated college and my big sister showed me to you guys, showed you guys to me.
- 11:20And I was like, oh my God, this is amazing.
- 11:23And then I just was obsessed.
- 11:24Yeah.
- 11:25Why?
- 11:26I looked up to you guys a lot.
- 11:27Like, I felt like you guys had this like really cool, like big sister vibe where I was just like, oh, I want to be like the fun bubbly girls who like live in California and wear like cool gym outfits and like have fun working out.
- 11:36And also like, I had never had a relationship to exercise that didn't feel like it was like a punishment or like seeking out a certain appearance.
- 11:43And like, yeah, obviously you guys are snatched, like, but it was more than that.
- 11:49It was like increasing your mood and yeah, connection.
- 11:52Like all of that really resonated with me.
- 11:54Yeah, I mean, and we're talking so long ago, well, almost a decade that you discovered Turn It Up.
- 12:01I feel like there was a shift.
- 12:03I mean, obviously, we love looking great and feeling great, you know, the aesthetic.
- 12:07But also, for me, as I've gotten older, it's more about, like, how you feel mentally.
- 12:12But we didn't realize or weren't talking about it back in the day of, like, why do I work out?
- 12:17Oh, my gosh, how do I feel in those endorphins?
- 12:21I think that was kind of the thing that we didn't realize because we were so young.
- 12:23Yeah.
- 12:24Not only did we like to feel good, but mentally it just made us have so much energy and creative.
- 12:32And so there's so many different aspects that we've learned over the years of why we work out.
- 12:36Yeah, and making it accessible to people.
- 12:38The fact that I could move a coffee table out of the way and get a workout in, that was special.
- 12:42You didn't have to buy a million things of equipment to be able to do all the workouts.
- 12:48Did you ever have imposter syndrome as an entrepreneur?
- 12:51Because you finally turned it up when you were what, like 27?
- 12:53Yes, 27.
- 12:54That's so young to be like, oh, I just casually own this multi-million dollar brand.
- 12:59Well, I mean, it took a while to build.
- 13:02Yeah.
- 13:02I think one of the things for me always, even with like the big silence, which we can talk about, is it's always purpose driven and never financially driven.
- 13:12Mm hmm.
- 13:13But when I was a kid, I always was like open it, like doing yard sales or having a kitchen in my basement where I would make mud into mud pies and serve it to my parents.
- 13:26Like I always was like doing something or after school, I would have teaching curriculums and teach to my imaginary students.
- 13:34I love that.
- 13:35Yeah.
- 13:36Kids still do that?
- 13:37I'm like, am I crazy?
- 13:38I would like talk to my, imagine me in my basement in Indiana.
- 13:42Yeah.
- 13:43After school with a chalkboard talking to my students.
- 13:46I'm like, am I crazy?
- 13:47No, you were literally, you were manifesting your life now, which is like you're a public speaker.
- 13:52You're a leader.
- 13:53Like all these things.
- 13:54Yeah.
- 13:55Are you into like astrology?
- 13:56Have you looked into that?
- 13:57I'm not hugely, no.
- 13:58I'm an Aries.
- 13:59Can you tell me something?
- 13:59Oh my God.
- 14:00Oh my God, about being an Aries.
- 14:01Well, I'm a Leo, so we like vibe.
- 14:02Okay.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:03I don't know a ton about Aries.
- 14:04I'm married to one too.
- 14:06Are you?
- 14:06Yeah.
- 14:07But I feel like Aries gets shit done.
- 14:09Like when you guys like decide to do something, you're like, get the fuck out of my way.
- 14:13I'm doing this.
- 14:14I would say for me, I'm...
- 14:16I'm not afraid of a challenge.
- 14:20You know, my background, you know, growing up and been through it all already.
- 14:25Like, what could be worse?
- 14:26I'm not afraid of something not being successful, of someone judging you.
- 14:31I mean, we were just before recording.
- 14:33Sometimes people judging us can hurt.
- 14:35Yeah, you're human.
- 14:36It's okay.
- 14:36Yeah.
- 14:38Yeah, I've got that fire in me for sure.
- 14:40Hell yeah.
- 14:42Is there a piece of advice that you would give to young entrepreneurs who are maybe afraid of taking a big swing the way you did?
- 14:48I mean, it would go back to what I just said.
- 14:52Take the risk because what do you have to lose?
- 14:56Back then, we didn't raise any money.
- 14:58I feel like in today's world, a lot of brands raise money and build the brand and then try to build community where we were always –
- 15:07let's just build a community because this is going to be fun.
- 15:09I mean, we were even like, we could on YouTube get some like Google ads.
- 15:14Yeah, yeah.
- 15:15It was like never, it was just like, let's do something fun and bring people together.
- 15:20And it's a very different world in people building brands.
- 15:24Say there's a nutrition company, they build a nutrition company and then try to spend money on marketing and ad sales to expand that.
- 15:32And we never did that.
- 15:34And even to this day, still not doing it.
- 15:37I probably should because it is a different world these days.
- 15:40But yeah, it's always just been organic.
- 15:43That's so cool.
- 15:43Well, and I do feel like TIU girlies, like we stick around.
- 15:47We want to know what you're up to.
- 15:48We're like so invested in the brand because we found you during like formative years, you know, which is really special.
- 15:55I have a question for you.
- 15:56Going back to TikTok, which I know you're not super active on.
- 15:59I'm going to get there.
- 16:00Yet.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:01Just wait.
- 16:02Okay.
- 16:03I'm going to be the biggest.
- 16:03I'm going to start dancing.
- 16:05Please.
- 16:05We need it.
- 16:06But like there are so many, maybe you see this on Instagram too.
- 16:09There's so many social media trends around like women's fitness being like, you have to do Pilates if you want to be built this way.
- 16:14Or like lifting makes you bulky or like running spikes your cortisol.
- 16:17As someone who's like been in the wellness space for so long, what do you think about all of that on the internet?
- 16:23Yeah.
- 16:25I think you do whatever makes you feel good.
- 16:28For myself, I've gone through phases of being a triathlete.
- 16:32Even Bobby, my husband, has signed up for an Ironman that he's doing in April.
- 16:37I'm like, I'm good.
- 16:38I'm good.
- 16:39Even today, he texted me this morning.
- 16:41He's like, I signed up for a 10K in Austin on April 12th or something.
- 16:44You want to join me?
- 16:45I was like, no.
- 16:46You're like, love you, babe, but good luck.
- 16:50You know, I've gone through my triathlon stage.
- 16:51I've gone through my yoga stage.
- 16:53I've gone through lifting.
- 16:54I've gone through HIIT.
- 16:56And I'm currently in my walk and weightlifting stage.
- 17:00And then, of course, meditation, which is really important.
- 17:02I did that this morning.
- 17:03I feel like I'm in L.A. right now, and I lived here for 20 years.
- 17:06And then I'm back where I get very anxious being here.
- 17:11And so this morning I had to sit myself down, light this little candle, and just breathe.
- 17:16So I'm in my...
- 17:18strength, walk outside, meditate stage.
- 17:21Sounds like a gorgeous life.
- 17:23How long have you been meditating for again?
- 17:26Gosh, I introduced it to Tone It Up about in like 2019, maybe.
- 17:33We didn't have it in the app at first because some people thought it was like too woo-woo, but now it's like so mainstream.
- 17:39Yeah.
- 17:40But I've been doing it for probably 15 years.
- 17:43That's the thing.
- 17:44I feel like you're so ahead of the curve in that way because I think also like putting fitness and mindfulness together, I feel like a lot of other brands just focus on fitness or like, if you want to look this way, you have to do this way.
- 17:56And it's almost coming from this like restrictive place as opposed to, like you said, like doing what feels good and kind of like thinking of movement as like a gift to yourself.
- 18:03Yeah.
- 18:04It's whatever makes me feel good and motivates me.
- 18:07Yeah.
- 18:08Period.
- 18:09Are there any like TIU hacks that like to this day you swear by if you're like, I want to feel really hot for this thing I have coming up.
- 18:16TIU hacks.
- 18:17I don't know.
- 18:17Bring some up from the old days.
- 18:18I'm like, um, I, I love the five day detox and the seven day slim down.
- 18:25Those are fucking amazing.
- 18:27I put apple cider vinegar and like a huge Stanley cup every day, which is like, I literally feel like it makes me hotter.
- 18:33I do love apple cider vinegar.
- 18:34I was going to ask, did you have to train yourself to like it or did you always like kind of mess with it?
- 18:38I was doing apple cider vinegar pre-TIU.
- 18:42You're like, you're an OG.
- 18:44OG ACV.
- 18:45Like it was post like meals and stuff at that time.
- 18:48And I actually introduced Kat to apple cider vinegar.
- 18:51And the first time she did it, she was like disgusted.
- 18:54But then you realize it just helps.
- 18:56Even when I go to any doctors or, you know, they're like, do you do apple cider vinegar?
- 19:01And I'm like, absolutely.
- 19:02And enzymes.
- 19:03So it's just, it makes me feel good for digestion.
- 19:06That's it.
- 19:06Yeah.
- 19:07It just keeps everything moving.
- 19:08I want to be moving.
- 19:09Yeah.
- 19:09Yeah.
- 19:10Moving in all the ways.
- 19:13You announced that you bought back Tone It Up in December.
- 19:16How has it been?
- 19:18How has this first month of having that information out there been?
- 19:21Incredible.
- 19:22Incredible.
- 19:23Ah, my heart.
- 19:26I was losing sleep.
- 19:29It was a six-month negotiation for that one.
- 19:32And then the six months prior, there was a different deal being negotiated.
- 19:36So it was like a year of lawyers every day, which is extremely exhausting.
- 19:40So then I wanted to give myself a time to breathe.
- 19:44Because everyone that was close to me was like, well, what's your plan?
- 19:47What are you doing?
- 19:49Can I just breathe for once?
- 19:51I...
- 19:53This is so special to me.
- 19:54I want to experience this feeling before I announce it.
- 19:58So I think it was September or October, maybe October, that the deal was actually done.
- 20:08And then I announced it in December.
- 20:12That's major.
- 20:13And so in between that time, I was reaching out to all the trainers.
- 20:17Yeah.
- 20:17Who are in the current new year, new TIU.
- 20:20Major.
- 20:20And I'm a very shy person, actually.
- 20:23And for me to just be like, should I text them?
- 20:27And everyone's like, what's up?
- 20:29Good to hear from you.
- 20:31And then get on the phone with everyone and Steph and Tori and Chyna and Christina.
- 20:37I was like, you don't have to tell me an answer today.
- 20:40You can tell me to F off.
- 20:44But within 24 hours, each of them called me back and were like, I'm so in.
- 20:49Oh, my heart.
- 20:51Yeah.
- 20:52I mean, the first episode of Tone It Down, it made my heart so happy to just hear all of y'all like kiki-ing together.
- 20:57Yeah, it was so fun.
- 20:58And they flew out to Austin to do the shoot.
- 21:00It was like time had not passed.
- 21:03And actually, Chyna and Steph are coming here tomorrow to do a longer version, solo versions of the podcast.
- 21:09Oh, my God.
- 21:10I know, you can probably...
- 21:11I can't wait.
- 21:12I'm a subscriber, obviously.
- 21:13I can't wait to listen.
- 21:16So you founded The Big Silence 2, like podcast, foundation.
- 21:20It's also the title of your memoir.
- 21:23What was it like shifting from being like, you kind of talk about this in your book too, being like the smiley girls on the beach and then kind of pivoting to being just this very open, vulnerable mental health advocate?
- 21:33Yeah.
- 21:34I felt like it was necessary for myself to be more authentic to myself.
- 21:41Because in founding Tone It Up, we had a discussion of no one can know about your past.
- 21:46There's such a stigma around it.
- 21:49And then I was just feeling icky.
- 21:52Like not being me.
- 21:53And I'm like, well, if I'm going through this and feeling this way and I experienced this, who else within the community or outside the community who wants to be a part of it is like, wait, me too.
- 22:05And it was another scary thing.
- 22:07I do a lot of scary things.
- 22:09Yeah.
- 22:11It was actually incredible.
- 22:13Once I released the book, which took me five years to write.
- 22:17Yeah.
- 22:18I was doing a billion other things too.
- 22:20And so many people came forward.
- 22:22And even still, audiobook came out.
- 22:25People keep coming out and be like, oh my gosh, my brother, my sister, I am this way.
- 22:29And I was like, this is coming full circle.
- 22:32And as I grow forward.
- 22:35The importance of fitness, mental health, physical health, meditation, everything.
- 22:39I think it's something that we need to openly discuss with each other so that we can live our fullest life.
- 22:46I agree.
- 22:46And also if the like mission statement of Tone It Up is to empower women, I think you being open and vulnerable is empowering women in a different way because you're making it, you're removing the stigma and the shame.
- 22:57You talk about it too.
- 22:58I was listening to your podcast today with your dad.
- 23:00Oh my God.
- 23:01He's so adorable.
- 23:03Oh my God.
- 23:04You're going to make his day.
- 23:07And I think, I don't know if it was that one.
- 23:09I was on a walk today.
- 23:10I was just listening to your podcast.
- 23:12Something you were talking about going on medication or something.
- 23:15And your new therapist.
- 23:16How's that going?
- 23:17Oh, my gosh.
- 23:17Obsessed.
- 23:18Yeah.
- 23:18Cried immediately when I saw her face because I was like, I just need someone to talk to.
- 23:22But it was the best.
- 23:23Yeah.
- 23:23Yeah.
- 23:24Yeah.
- 23:25I think it's important you talk about it, too.
- 23:26And there's no shame in whatever is going on.
- 23:29I'm like, yeah.
- 23:31Some days I'm like, give me those nets.
- 23:33Yeah, hand them over.
- 23:34I mean, it's also interesting how the fitness and wellness space, how those conversations have evolved since 2009, where back then I think it wasn't talked about as much.
- 23:45And so I can understand why as a fitness brand, it was like, well, we don't really need to go there.
- 23:49And now I think it just adds to the experience of investing in you as a founder and everything you have going on.
- 23:56And it makes other people feel less alone.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 23:59Yeah, I love it.
- 24:01So you talked about like in your book and like on your podcasts, growing into yourself and getting better at sort of like establishing boundaries like in your life.
- 24:09And I was kind of curious, what has that journey been like for you, like in your personal life and as a business owner?
- 24:15I had no boundaries until 2017.
- 24:20We both had to just like sigh.
- 24:21Take that in.
- 24:22Living life without boundaries, without saying no, without being like, this isn't healthy for me.
- 24:29This isn't what I want to really do.
- 24:31So then I'm anxious.
- 24:33So then there was someone in L.A. that I've worked with, Gwen Dittmar, and she's just amazing.
- 24:40And I worked with her for initially six months before going on the Tone Rope tour because I was like,
- 24:46I'm about to embark in something major.
- 24:49I need to know how to set my boundaries, how to structure my time, how to be out there and do what I love.
- 24:55Because when I'm going on stage or I'm speaking or teaching a workout or doing a podcast, I love it.
- 25:01But I need to give myself permission to then be like,
- 25:05I'm going to go in there.
- 25:06Yeah.
- 25:07Reach harder.
- 25:08Yeah.
- 25:09And for so long, being an introvert, and that's the other thing that's changed a lot over the past 15 years, is that being an introvert is not a stigma anymore.
- 25:19Have you noticed that?
- 25:20No, we're a powerful community.
- 25:21Yeah.
- 25:22And you can be outgoing and still be like, but I'm an introvert.
- 25:25Yeah.
- 25:26I love you.
- 25:26I love being around you.
- 25:28But now I'm going to step over here.
- 25:29Don't take that personally.
- 25:30This is the boundary that I need.
- 25:32But I know that I am here for you.
- 25:34And back in the day, too, at some of the Toner Up retreats, I had heard people were like, Karina's such a bitch.
- 25:44I don't know.
- 25:45I was like, well, this is told to me by someone else.
- 25:47I'm like, really?
- 25:48I was like, I'm shy.
- 25:49Yeah, those are very different things.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:52And I've learned over the years, I'm not as shy.
- 25:55I'm reaching out to you on TikTok and like, hey, Hannah, I want to meet you.
- 26:01So I'm very, I'm reaching out to trainers.
- 26:03You know, over the years I've worked on that.
- 26:06I think just with my childhood and everything, I became very introverted.
- 26:10So I've worked on loving the extroverted.
- 26:14Isn't there a new word now too?
- 26:16Is there?
- 26:17I need to find it.
- 26:18What's the new word where you're like both?
- 26:22Or trovert.
- 26:23I'm totally making that up.
- 26:27No, there's like an actual term now.
- 26:29I don't know.
- 26:30I'm like, we'll find it.
- 26:31We'll find it.
- 26:32We'll claim it.
- 26:33But what about you and boundaries?
- 26:34Like what was your...
- 26:35I'm still learning that.
- 26:36That's part of why I'm like crying in therapy is because I like grew up around like a lot of people pleasing.
- 26:42And so... What is it?
- 26:45Ambovert.
- 26:45Ambovert.
- 26:46Ambovert.
- 26:46Like A-M?
- 26:47A-M.
- 26:49Ambivert.
- 26:50It sounds like a dinosaur.
- 26:51Wait, what's the definition of it?
- 26:52I want to make sure.
- 26:55There's all types of blends and traits of both.
- 27:00introverts who recharge alone and extroverts who recharge socially, allowing them to enjoy social situations, but also need quiet time to recharge their energy.
- 27:08They're flexible, adopting their behavior to the situation and they can be outgoing or reserved as needed, making them good communicators and negotiators.
- 27:15Oh my God.
- 27:16Okay.
- 27:17Humble brag.
- 27:19Humble brag.
- 27:20Ambrovert here.
- 27:21I'm going to stop saying I'm an intro.
- 27:23I'm an ambrovert.
- 27:24Ambrovert.
- 27:25Ambro.
- 27:26No.
- 27:26Marlon.
- 27:30We got there.
- 27:31We figured you learn something new every day.
- 27:33But yeah, it's like, it can be so scary as a people pleaser.
- 27:37Cause that's like a learned behavior for me where it's like, my body literally goes into fight or flight where it's like, if I say no, I feel like everyone's going to find out that I'm a bad person.
- 27:46And so I'm learning how to like make boundaries in a way that's like healthy.
- 27:49And also like sometimes making a boundary is just being like, I'm disengaging from this person.
- 27:53I literally can't do this anymore.
- 27:55Yeah.
- 27:55Yeah, that can be very healthy.
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:58Yeah, it's hard, though.
- 28:00You inspire me.
- 28:02But do you think with you, with boundaries, because I know me growing up with a schizophrenic mother, and I was people-pleasing her forever and ever, and that's like how I became, like, there's no boundaries.
- 28:16What do you need, Mom?
- 28:16What do you need?
- 28:17Even the last five years of her life, I'm like, what do you need?
- 28:19How can I take care of you?
- 28:20Let me...
- 28:22You know, the doctors, this, buy you a house, a car, this, take care of you hours a day.
- 28:27Like, was it something from your youth?
- 28:30And I know your dad's going to listen to this.
- 28:32He's amazing and perfect.
- 28:34But was there something?
- 28:35Well, I know your mom also died.
- 28:37Yeah.
- 28:38Yeah, I think it was a lot of like, with Love and Light, like I think with my mom, like I think I was sort of, I wanted to be like easy for her to parent.
- 28:46So I just took my needs and like put them over here and like really invested in taking care of her.
- 28:51And so it's like kind of a similar dynamic where it's like,
- 28:54At the end of the day, like looking back, I'm like, oh, but I was a kid who didn't feel like I was allowed to like have needs.
- 28:59And so as an adult, like it's my default is to just abandon my needs and be like, it's not that big of a deal.
- 29:04I'll just figure it out.
- 29:05And then you're quietly dying inside or resenting people or just things that aren't ultimately healthy for you or your relationships.
- 29:12Yeah.
- 29:13Yeah.
- 29:14Well, you got this.
- 29:15Yeah.
- 29:15When did you first start going to therapy or the psychology?
- 29:17I've dabbled throughout my life.
- 29:19With my new therapist, I've only had one session.
- 29:21Your dad said he took you when you were like three years old.
- 29:23Yeah, because I was having like night terrors.
- 29:25Oh, I had that at five years old.
- 29:28I literally would like hallucinate like big prehistoric bugs on the ceiling.
- 29:31Like I had like horrible anxiety as a child.
- 29:34It's crazy.
- 29:35You're like, same girl.
- 29:38But yeah, I'm hugely into therapy.
- 29:41Yeah.
- 29:41But I've also had therapists that like give me like mad anxiety who like they kind of try and treat me like a bestie.
- 29:47And like I need like a doctor.
- 29:49So I've done all types of therapy.
- 29:51And if you need suggestions of people in L.A., I can go to you.
- 29:55But talk therapy doesn't do it to me or for me.
- 29:59I need homework.
- 30:00I need you to challenge me.
- 30:01I need you to give me assignments.
- 30:03I need you to give me that permission to give permission to myself to stand up to someone to set those boundaries.
- 30:10But like so much homework, that inner child work and the writing letters to yourself.
- 30:14And that's been the best for me is that type of work.
- 30:18I had one therapist I was like, despised.
- 30:22Because she would just be like, what do you want to talk about today?
- 30:24Yeah.
- 30:25And I'm like, I don't know.
- 30:27And then I would like talk, talk, talk.
- 30:29And she's like, okay, time's up.
- 30:31I was like, what do I do?
- 30:32She's like, just change your feelings.
- 30:34Oh, my God.
- 30:37Oh my God.
- 30:38What do you mean?
- 30:39Tell them, like, I want to work on myself.
- 30:41You're like, that's why I'm here.
- 30:43Just change my thoughts and my feelings.
- 30:46I once had a friend tell me, like, Hannah, I'm pretty sure your therapist is like that person that a bunch of people went to high school with.
- 30:51And they go, how did she end up being a therapist?
- 30:54And I was like, damn, everyone does know someone who became a therapist where you're like, that's an interesting path for you.
- 30:59So I'm glad you found someone better, but nothing pisses me off more.
- 31:02It's like, if I knew what was wrong with me, I wouldn't be here.
- 31:05If I knew how to handle it, I wouldn't be paying $150 a session because insurance doesn't care.
- 31:12Anyways.
- 31:12On that note, I'm just going to throw out there with the big silence.
- 31:15That's like one of our biggest programs is therapy for all.
- 31:18So we pay, we sponsor therapy for those whose health insurance doesn't cover it or they don't have health insurance.
- 31:24Just throwing that in there.
- 31:25As you should.
- 31:26That's amazing because it really should be more accessible for people.
- 31:29Yeah.
- 31:31Are you down to play a little game, a little TIU themed game?
- 31:34It's called Feel the Burn.
- 31:36And it's inspired by all the times I felt the burn during a TIU workout.
- 31:39Having another sip of wine.
- 31:41So I'm going to ask you just some fun burning questions about TIU lore.
- 31:44Okay, okay.
- 31:45Okay.
- 31:46How did you get your tan so perfect when you filmed those TIU videos on the beach?
- 31:51Oh my God.
- 31:52So much tanner.
- 31:54We did not go to a tanning bed.
- 31:56That was me when I was in high school.
- 31:58Terrible.
- 31:59We would do like three or four layers the night before shoot and then lay in bed in a hotel room.
- 32:06Usually we were like in Turks and Caicos or Jamaica.
- 32:10Like disgusting.
- 32:12Boyfriends, husbands at the time were like, you're gross.
- 32:16I was like, gotta do it.
- 32:17And then on top of that, we would put like this bronzer.
- 32:22What is it?
- 32:23My makeup artist friend of 20 years, Jenna Anton, had this bronzer that she would always bring on set.
- 32:28And we would just layer that on.
- 32:31Like we were thick.
- 32:32Oh, my God.
- 32:33And it never.
- 32:35That's what I was wondering.
- 32:35Did it transfer?
- 32:36Did it melt?
- 32:38It was major because it would take like three people to put a sports bra on.
- 32:43Because you just had to kind of stand there.
- 32:45And like raise it over.
- 32:46And then, yeah.
- 32:48Sometimes we'd put the cream on, like the other tan or the topical layer or whatever it's called, after the outfit was on.
- 32:54So you'd have to like roll down your pants.
- 32:56Don't move.
- 32:58Like, yeah.
- 32:59It was...
- 33:00there was not a line.
- 33:01Like you guys, like those tans were perfect.
- 33:04And it was like the 2010s.
- 33:05So I felt like tans were like on another level.
- 33:08I mean, wasn't that, yeah.
- 33:09Right.
- 33:09Wasn't that when like, what is the reality show?
- 33:12The Jersey shore.
- 33:12Yes.
- 33:12Yeah.
- 33:13It's like we were tan.
- 33:14That was the vibe back then.
- 33:16Yeah.
- 33:17And I still watch those videos and I'm like, yeah, I want to be that.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:20Yeah.
- 33:20I think like that, the muscles pop.
- 33:22And then we would put like sunscreen over your abs because it glistens.
- 33:27So then you have more of a six pack.
- 33:29Life hack.
- 33:30I need to do that this summer because I'm like, I'm still working on my abs, but if I can glisten, I want to glisten.
- 33:35Can you tell us any tea about the TAU retreats and would they ever come back?
- 33:40You have to ask me specific tea.
- 33:42Okay.
- 33:42Okay.
- 33:43And then would they come back?
- 33:44Yes.
- 33:47We're actually planning one in the fall.
- 33:51Small.
- 33:51I want to start smaller.
- 33:52Okay.
- 33:52Okay.
- 33:53Okay.
- 33:54So stay tuned.
- 33:56But, and then I want to do more.
- 33:57Like one of my big goals is just connection.
- 33:59Even like when reacquiring TAU, I've noticed how many women are like, thank you for doing this.
- 34:06Oh my gosh, I have my TAU girls back.
- 34:08My community is back.
- 34:09Are you going to do retreat?
- 34:10Like there's so much like around that.
- 34:14And I, for myself too, like we're older, it's hard to make friends and get together and have fun without the pressure, without the judgment.
- 34:22So yes, it's hard.
- 34:23And just like be girls together.
- 34:25So fun.
- 34:26And with boundaries, like you don't have to do everything.
- 34:29Like I've got a good retreat coming up.
- 34:31Des and I have already scouted out the place and it's great.
- 34:35Oh my God.
- 34:36Okay.
- 34:36I have plans in the fall.
- 34:40The tea around the retreats.
- 34:41Yeah.
- 34:42Oh yeah.
- 34:42Okay.
- 34:43Someone commented that you cried at a retreat.
- 34:46Were you sad?
- 34:47Yeah.
- 34:48I've seen that a few times where, oh my God, Karina, I think it was when Brody Jenner was at the Newport retreat.
- 34:56If I saw him in person, I would cry too.
- 34:58He's so hot.
- 34:59He was.
- 35:00I wasn't crying over him.
- 35:02He actually... That's a different story.
- 35:04Anyway, so he was like DJing there.
- 35:07What people don't know and what I can share is that the reason I was crying behind Brody Jenner while he's DJing is because there was a health scare in an ambulance backstage and someone had to go to the hospital.
- 35:19That's scary.
- 35:20And it was very emotional.
- 35:22There was no...
- 35:23like no other tea other than like, oh my gosh, this person that I love is not doing okay.
- 35:30And they, yeah.
- 35:31That's really scary.
- 35:32Oh my gosh.
- 35:33I don't blame you.
- 35:35Compassionate queen.
- 35:36See, I'm not hired off Craigslist and I wasn't crying backstage for nothing.
- 35:41I'm literally so glad we can clear this up.
- 35:44Did you ever struggle to get through videos when you were like filming on the beach in the heat?
- 35:49Yeah, that's why I don't film on the beach in the heat anymore.
- 35:52Imagine like being in Turks and Caicos.
- 35:54It's a hundred degrees.
- 35:56And you were, at the time, still doing burpees and jump squats.
- 36:01And back then, too, we didn't have it where we would do multiple camera angles.
- 36:06So you would do the workouts over and over again.
- 36:09So you're talking, we would wake up at 3 a.m. because, you know, glam.
- 36:14Obviously.
- 36:15Now I'm a little less, like, glam.
- 36:17You look very glam.
- 36:18Thank you.
- 36:19I spent 20 minutes versus three hours.
- 36:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:22No hair extensions.
- 36:23I mean, someday I make a buck.
- 36:24You like hair extensions?
- 36:25Yeah.
- 36:27I don't even think you get beach babe hair.
- 36:29Oh my gosh.
- 36:29This is like really exposing some tears.
- 36:32All these years I was like, they're mermaids.
- 36:37Mermaid workout, one of my favorites.
- 36:38I'm sharing way too much.
- 36:41I'm an idiot.
- 36:42Of course they were extensions.
- 36:43Okay, keep going.
- 36:44I mean, they were great.
- 36:45They looked really good.
- 36:47Yeah.
- 36:47I wouldn't have known.
- 36:47I think back in the day it was like clippins or something.
- 36:50Your hair is amazing.
- 36:51Yeah, thank you.
- 36:52No, I don't have extensions.
- 36:52It is real.
- 36:53Wow.
- 36:54See, you got your mermaid hair.
- 36:56Thank you.
- 36:56It's like this all over my body.
- 36:58That's the only thing that's like, it's like big toe, mustache.
- 37:01Like, you know, I got to keep it in check.
- 37:03But I did your guys' like hair tutorial with the curls and your cat eye tutorial, which we both have today.
- 37:10I always had a cat eye.
- 37:11Me too.
- 37:12That's like just my thing.
- 37:13I don't care that it's millennial.
- 37:14I don't give a fuck.
- 37:15Is it millennial?
- 37:15Gen Z is mean about the cat eye and I'm like.
- 37:16Because they're using like brown eyeshadow and like creating like a fake cat eye but with eyeshadow and it's like.
- 37:23I'm like, it's the same thing.
- 37:25It's a cat eye.
- 37:27Makes me feel sexy.
- 37:28Yeah.
- 37:29Love it.
- 37:30Did you ever get sand in your sneakers and was that annoying?
- 37:32I got sand everywhere.
- 37:35You're like everywhere.
- 37:38And it was like showering at the end of, okay, showering at the end of the day of shoot day.
- 37:42Can you imagine the amount of tanner falling off?
- 37:45The sand, the like stink.
- 37:48Oh my gosh.
- 37:50I'm like really de-glamorizing it.
- 37:53Amazing.
- 37:54Relatable queen.
- 37:55These are the things I never think about though.
- 37:57Speaking of aspirational aspects of these videos, did you feel so powerful when you guys would film those intros, like the Break a Sweat one and the Deasy Daisy one when you guys were on the little Ferris wheel?
- 38:08How fun was that?
- 38:09I literally was... That footage altered my brain chemistry.
- 38:11I was like, I've never seen cooler people in my life.
- 38:13I was recently trying to see if those videos are still out there.
- 38:16Are they on YouTube?
- 38:17I need to deep dive.
- 38:17The Break a Sweat intro got cut, and I was like, maybe that's a copyright thing.
- 38:21I don't know.
- 38:22Well, now that Becky G is massive.
- 38:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:24She was at the Create and Cultivate event, and I should have gone up to her.
- 38:28I was telling Dez, I was like, that's Break a Sweat Becky G. We're back in the day.
- 38:31She had just come out, and we actually talked to her label and got permission to use it.
- 38:36Oh, my God.
- 38:37But...
- 38:39But Deezy Daisy too.
- 38:40That song.
- 38:41Deezy Daisy.
- 38:42Deezy Daisy.
- 38:43Oh, and that was like dancing on the beach.
- 38:45I was like, they're so fucking cool.
- 38:47I mean, no one in fitness has done that.
- 38:49And I still do it a bit too with like marketing stuff and telling a story.
- 38:53And I love that because I love putting, it's like a little mini movie and inspirational of like how you're going to feel.
- 38:59Yes.
- 39:00And so much fun.
- 39:02So much work went into planning all of that.
- 39:04And remember the time we rented a yacht.
- 39:07Iconic.
- 39:08I think it was the same shoot as the Ferris wheel.
- 39:12Oh, my God.
- 39:13Oh, yeah, because you were, like, running, like, across the deck in bikinis.
- 39:17Probably.
- 39:18Yeah, I was, like, you were selling, like, a lifestyle, yeah, of just, like, having fun, being a hot girl, living your best life.
- 39:26Yeah, I mean, now we're just selling a lifestyle of taking naps.
- 39:29I mean, that's an important lifestyle as well.
- 39:31I would argue the most important.
- 39:33I'm just kidding.
- 39:34And being a pom mom.
- 39:36That's an important lifestyle as well.
- 39:38Shout out to all of your poms.
- 39:39Seven.
- 39:40Seven.
- 39:40And OG Skunky.
- 39:43She's 15 or 16 now.
- 39:45Celebrity icon Skunk.
- 39:46She is thriving.
- 39:48Thriving.
- 39:48Bravo reality stars.
- 39:49Yeah.
- 39:50Oh my gosh.
- 39:51You inspired me to watch that entire series again over the holidays.
- 39:55What was a rewatch like for you?
- 39:57Well, Bobby had never watched every episode.
- 39:59Oh my God.
- 40:01And it was, I watched it with Desiree like maybe a year ago.
- 40:06Two and a half years ago.
- 40:08It's a good rewatch.
- 40:09And it's so interesting now because I can watch it with a smile and like laugh and have fun and have all those memories.
- 40:16And I've actually had a lot of people come up now and be like, you need a reality show again.
- 40:21I was like, it could be fun.
- 40:23Oh my God.
- 40:24Bravo.
- 40:24Are you listening?
- 40:25Bravo.
- 40:26Please.
- 40:29Yeah, please.
- 40:31We need it.
- 40:32I mean, when you and Bobby went on that date on the show, I was like, he's so obsessed with her, and it's so cute to see.
- 40:38Okay, that's the other thing on the toilet board.
- 40:40Yeah, we need the Bobby T. It's true.
- 40:42He moved in below me.
- 40:44The day we started filming, I remember the date, it was October 1st, whatever year.
- 40:49We had mutual friends, and he had a Facebook message to me.
- 40:53He was going through a breakup.
- 40:54He wanted to move from...
- 40:56East side in LA somewhere and moved to Manhattan beach.
- 41:00And he's like, if anything opens up a two bedroom, me and my friend Eddie want to move there.
- 41:05I had lived upstairs, had broken up with a boyfriend.
- 41:07So I was single.
- 41:08I stayed there.
- 41:09I had monkey and skunky.
- 41:11My neighbor downstairs broke up with her boyfriend moving out.
- 41:15And I messaged Bobby on Facebook.
- 41:17It's like, Hey, this is apartments available.
- 41:20And he's like, sounds perfect.
- 41:22This is going to get weird.
- 41:24I was like, Oh,
- 41:25Oh, immediately.
- 41:27We basically like started dating immediately.
- 41:29And then as we're talking about the Bravo show, he moved in.
- 41:32I didn't even tell him we were filming a TV show, but there's like producers and everyone in the garage below.
- 41:38And he's like, what's going on here?
- 41:39I was like, oh, we're just filming a show.
- 41:43And you're like, what did we just move into?
- 41:45Because it's only two units.
- 41:47So we were just there.
- 41:48And then we basically lived there.
- 41:52together from day one.
- 41:52He was like down to be on the show.
- 41:54He's like, I'll sign that release.
- 41:55Well, we were on a lunch break from filming and I was telling Kat something.
- 42:00I was like, I made out with a neighbor last night.
- 42:02I was like, just kissing.
- 42:05And Stephanie, our producer, creeped over to our lunch table.
- 42:09She's like, what'd you say?
- 42:11Oh.
- 42:12And I was like, yeah, just Bobby, the neighbor, you've met him.
- 42:16She's like, huh?
- 42:17So apparently then they go knocking on his door with a release and are saying, will you film?
- 42:24Oh, my God.
- 42:25And he was like, yeah.
- 42:26Yeah.
- 42:26Oh, my God.
- 42:27Ladies, if he wanted to, he would.
- 42:28Okay?
- 42:29Okay?
- 42:30That's incredible.
- 42:31You guys are so cute.
- 42:33And I mean, it worked out.
- 42:34You're still married to this day.
- 42:35Yeah.
- 42:3510 years this year, married, 13 years together.
- 42:39Congratulations.
- 42:40That's incredible.
- 42:41Yeah.
- 42:42Oh, I love that.
- 42:43Wait, oh, there was a chair in your apartment on the show.
- 42:46And there was sort of some discourse around the chair.
- 42:49Like, oh, this chair is like, Brian was like, this chair is too girly.
- 42:52I don't want it.
- 42:53And you guys were like, we love it.
- 42:55What happened to the chair?
- 42:59I was like so over that chair.
- 43:00But then Bobby wanted to keep it.
- 43:03So he had it in storage for a while.
- 43:05And then when my mom, we got her a cabin up in Idlewild, we put the chair there.
- 43:11And Bobby's like, it's perfect for the cabin.
- 43:13And then once she passed and we were selling the cabin, I was like, just get rid of the chair.
- 43:18It's been through too much.
- 43:19Yeah.
- 43:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:20And Bobby secretly did not get rid of the chair.
- 43:22He kept it in secret?
- 43:24Yeah.
- 43:24And so it was in storage.
- 43:26And then as I was building the Tone It Down podcast studio, he's like, what about the chair?
- 43:32He's like, aren't you glad I didn't get rid of it?
- 43:34So now the wave painting that's in the show and the chair are in the Tone It Down podcast studio in Austin.
- 43:41I'm emotional.
- 43:42Yeah.
- 43:43I have the chills.
- 43:44That's really special.
- 43:45That's T.I.U.
- 43:46Lore right there, that chair.
- 43:48And it's a fun chair.
- 43:50It is.
- 43:50I'm glad we have it, Bobby.
- 43:52Yeah.
- 43:53And I loved your apartment on the show.
- 43:54It was so, like, beachy and cute.
- 43:55Yeah.
- 43:56It was very teal.
- 43:57Yeah.
- 43:57It was very teal.
- 43:58But that was also, like, the color of that time.
- 44:00Yeah.
- 44:00It was mermaid core.
- 44:02Well, it's coming back to, I mean, I'm coming back to like teal and pinks.
- 44:06Back to your roots.
- 44:07Yeah.
- 44:08I took a few years of just like only wearing black, but now I'm, I'm getting colorful again.
- 44:13I love that.
- 44:14It's like a gorgeous metaphor for where you're at in your life.
- 44:16Yeah.
- 44:17Not that you were like depressed before, but you're in this like fun era now.
- 44:20My fun era.
- 44:21Speaking of clothes, did you get to pick your outfits for all the videos?
- 44:25Yeah.
- 44:26Yes.
- 44:26Oh my God.
- 44:27They were all so fire.
- 44:28Like for the workout videos and stuff.
- 44:30Yeah.
- 44:30Yeah.
- 44:30Oh my God.
- 44:31I still strive to look that cool when I work out.
- 44:34I mean, I feel like I'm getting back there.
- 44:39It takes effort though.
- 44:40Like it's like, it's like planning any other outfit where you're like, like I like taking the time to put my gym looks together, but sometimes I'm like, I'm just happy I'm moving.
- 44:47I can't think about that today.
- 44:48Yeah.
- 44:48If I'm just working out by myself, ladies, I'm not always like styled when I go work out.
- 44:53I'm like throw a t-shirt on, some sneakers and just work out.
- 44:58Yeah.
- 44:58It must be fun though to be like the owner of a fitness empire because you can really rationalize like getting all the cute comfy clothes that you want.
- 45:05Like that's your work clothes.
- 45:06Yeah.
- 45:07Yeah.
- 45:07Which is dope.
- 45:08Yeah.
- 45:09When it's like time to go to an event or something, are you ever like, fuck, I have so many workout clothes.
- 45:13I need more going out clothes.
- 45:15I have an exquisite closet.
- 45:17I actually am very artistic.
- 45:19So I love fashion.
- 45:23So when I get a chance to go out and I do, I will dress up and have so much fun with it.
- 45:27Well, your outfits in Vegas were so cute.
- 45:29I saw those on Instagram.
- 45:30I was like, hell yeah.
- 45:31You turned out looks for that.
- 45:32Yeah.
- 45:32Oh my God.
- 45:33You need to do like a Tic Tac like closet tour.
- 45:35Yeah.
- 45:36I'm like, can we see it?
- 45:37We need to see it.
- 45:39It's very eclectic, like from vintage to very inexpensive to name brand and luxury brand.
- 45:49It's like a mix of everything.
- 45:50I always feel like that's like my favorite type of style when there's like a little high-low, something that's like one of a kind with something you could like go get yourself if you wanted to.
- 45:58Obsessed.
- 46:00Quick pivot.
- 46:00Was it ever annoying or hard to film videos when you had your period?
- 46:03Yeah.
- 46:04Not for me, which is crazy.
- 46:06I never had cramps.
- 46:07That's gorgeous.
- 46:08Yeah.
- 46:09I mean, it's annoying because it's like uncomfortable.
- 46:11Yeah.
- 46:11But like just, you know.
- 46:14Oh my God.
- 46:14You're like, I've been through enough.
- 46:15I was blessed to not have cramps.
- 46:16Yeah.
- 46:17Obsessed.
- 46:18Yeah.
- 46:18There was an episode of Toned Up where someone crashed a work trip to, I think you were in Hawaii.
- 46:23Mm-hmm.
- 46:24Did you know that that was going to happen or was that really a surprise?
- 46:27I did not know.
- 46:27Oh, shit.
- 46:29I mean, you never know with reality TV what's produced and what's not.
- 46:32Right, because some is produced.
- 46:34So with the show, they basically everything that we were already doing, because I was in charge of creating the schedule and letting production know, this is what we're doing for Tonerad.
- 46:44This is where we're traveling.
- 46:45This is blah, blah, blah.
- 46:47Every day we were done filming, I was then working and doing prepping for the next day and sending info to producers and doing travel planning.
- 46:55It was all really what we were doing.
- 46:57There's some Purdue stuff, like when we went to a bar in Maui and I kissed some boy, they're like, what are you going to do?
- 47:03That looked fun.
- 47:05It was fun.
- 47:06I had actually done that in real life before because I was single.
- 47:11And it was like the kissing game.
- 47:13Oh yeah, the kissing game.
- 47:15That's a fun game.
- 47:16I don't think you can do that anymore.
- 47:18But...
- 47:20But it was a thing.
- 47:22And so then they found this boy and they were like, is it okay if she comes over and kisses you?
- 47:28He's like, yeah.
- 47:30That's hilarious.
- 47:32I remember watching that scene being like, oh, my God, they're like so fun and cool that they're filming a fitness video tomorrow.
- 47:37And they're still like, we're going to get a drink.
- 47:39But that's the thing.
- 47:40We wouldn't have stayed out that late naturally.
- 47:43That was a lot.
- 47:45Was it because of filming?
- 47:47Yeah.
- 47:48And we had to get like that scene.
- 47:50Mm-hmm.
- 47:51What do you normally do, like, the night before a shoot?
- 47:54Then or now?
- 47:55Honestly, both.
- 47:57Then, go have some champagne.
- 48:03Now, go have a glass of Sauvignon Blanc.
- 48:06I love it.
- 48:06You're like, I was fun then, I'm fun now.
- 48:08Yeah.
- 48:09I feel like so much of, like, fitness culture is, like, really restrictive.
- 48:12And I appreciate that, like, you were always like, it's wine, not Wednesday.
- 48:16Yeah.
- 48:16Like, yeah.
- 48:16You can still be a person.
- 48:17Yeah.
- 48:18I definitely probably was more restrictive back then in terms of like the nutrition and like what I would eat.
- 48:24Now I'm very just whatever I want to eat.
- 48:28Yeah.
- 48:29But I'm overall just pretty healthy.
- 48:31But even last night up on the rooftop, we had a burger and fries, but it's not like I'm eating all the fries.
- 48:37That's the thing.
- 48:38I'm not like a big food craver.
- 48:41So you're like, I'll enjoy it, but I'm not going to like think about it all day long.
- 48:44Yeah.
- 48:44It's a good place to be.
- 48:46Yeah.
- 48:46Those are all my rapid fire questions for you.
- 48:49Were we going to make a surprise call?
- 48:51I think we have to.
- 48:52Do you have?
- 48:53Oh my God.
- 48:54What am I going to say?
- 48:55Go ahead.
- 48:56Should I be like, Bobby, I swear I didn't call you a douche.
- 48:58It was someone in my comments.
- 48:59You can randomly ask him questions.
- 49:01Oh my God.
- 49:01What should I ask?
- 49:03What do we want to know from Bobby?
- 49:05What do we want to know from Bobby?
- 49:07Let's see.
- 49:08Hmm.
- 49:10What was it like being Karina's hot neighbor?
- 49:13Hold on.
- 49:15You can just, he'll just flow.
- 49:17Hold on.
- 49:20I'm nervous.
- 49:21Hello?
- 49:27Oh, my gosh.
- 49:27Hi, Bobby.
- 49:28It's Hannah.
- 49:29Hello, Hannah.
- 49:31How are you today?
- 49:32I'm great.
- 49:33Oh, my gosh.
- 49:34I love that we have a chorus of palms in the background.
- 49:37That's gorgeous.
- 49:38I can hear that.
- 49:40It just kind of blends into my life at this point.
- 49:43They wanted to make a podcast appearance.
- 49:46I have a quick question.
- 49:47Well, first I have an apology because I swear I didn't call you a douche.
- 49:50Someone in my comments did, but I apologize.
- 49:52I didn't even see it, but you know, sometimes maybe it could be accurate.
- 49:57I mean, you and me both, Bobby.
- 49:59We all have a little moment.
- 50:00Yeah.
- 50:00Sometimes the douchedom has to come out for the greater good.
- 50:04My other question comment is what was it like being Karina's hot neighbor?
- 50:08Yeah.
- 50:09Ooh, that was an interesting and fun time, I would say.
- 50:18Interesting.
- 50:20Honestly, I have such great memories of that period of time.
- 50:24It was like...
- 50:26The perfect scenario of living in, you know, one of the best locations were in Manhattan Beach.
- 50:33I got out of a relationship and was, you know, upset about it.
- 50:38So all of a sudden this transition was a very, very easy transition from a sad time off of that.
- 50:45Oh, I love that.
- 50:46It's like Melrose Place.
- 50:47Yeah, it basically was.
- 50:49It basically was.
- 50:50And you're like, it was very convenient.
- 50:53We did not have to drive anywhere.
- 50:56My roommate loved it.
- 50:57I was moving in with my buddy, Eddie.
- 50:59And shout out to Eddie.
- 51:01Yeah.
- 51:02Shout out, Eddie.
- 51:02We split a two bedroom place.
- 51:04So I just had to I had to live with monkey and skunk at the time when I would go visit Korea.
- 51:11Well, I remember a time because you could hear them pitter pattering upstairs and I literally could hear you peeing.
- 51:20It was not well insulated.
- 51:23I guess.
- 51:24Yeah.
- 51:25And I was like, you probably could hear me farting.
- 51:29But I do remember, too, that Karina was like, this isn't going to be serious.
- 51:34Like, kind of like, you know, you just got a relationship.
- 51:36Just have fun in Manhattan Beach and whatever else.
- 51:39And I'm more of like a relationship person.
- 51:42So if I'm, you know, dating one person, I'm dating one person.
- 51:47And so I was like, oh, OK. And I was like, but you know what?
- 51:51Let's venture out.
- 51:52I mean, I can just imagine you, Bobby, being like, oh, bummer, I'm newly single.
- 51:55Guess I have to move into this building with my friend and my hot neighbor.
- 51:59Like, this sucks.
- 52:00You know what?
- 52:02You know, sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good.
- 52:05So we just, you know, we did what we had to do.
- 52:07That's beautiful.
- 52:08Thank you so much, Bobby.
- 52:09Karina, do you have anything else for your husband?
- 52:11No.
- 52:12Send me pictures of the palms.
- 52:14Love you.
- 52:14No.
- 52:15You'll get a lot.
- 52:16Yay.
- 52:17Bye.
- 52:17Ciao.
- 52:19Wow.
- 52:20Wow.
- 52:21I mean, I feel like all my dreams came true today.
- 52:24All my TAU dreams came true.
- 52:27This was incredible.
- 52:28Thank you for starting a Toned Up Lore.
- 52:31I've had a lot of fun with it.
- 52:34Me too.
- 52:34I hope that we answer enough questions.
- 52:37I have a speakpipe.com slash Karina Dawn, where you can leave other voicemails and questions.
- 52:44Oh my gosh.
- 52:44Listeners, seriously.
- 52:46And everyone who is here because of the TikTok series, make sure to hit up Karina with your questions.
