- 0:00Hello, and welcome to another episode of the Christian Reef
- 0:02podcast. Today's guests are podcasters
- 0:05and business professionals hailing, all the way from
- 0:07Atlanta. Georgia, they go by the name,
- 0:09Gen X X, welcome to the show. How you guys doing?
- 0:13Thank you, I'm doing well. I'm good.
- 0:23This is so this is the second time we've done this work, I've
- 0:25had multiple guests. It's a little bit new for me.
- 0:28The first time was about a year and a half ago or something and
- 0:32I really had to like update my zoom to facilitate it but I've
- 0:36got some questions together that are like specific the both of
- 0:39you and then just in general and then we'll see where we go.
- 0:43There might have to be like taking turns or something like
- 0:45that. We're seeing See how it goes.
- 0:47But yeah. So you're planning to start
- 0:50this. This new podcast?
- 0:52I don't know. I mean, when I got this
- 0:54information, it was you were starting at.
- 0:56So I don't know where on that kind of scale you are at now if
- 1:00you've started it, or if you haven't, but what I do know
- 1:03about it is that it's all about Generation X.
- 1:06Is that right? That tell us more about that.
- 1:13And we were talking about life and stuff.
- 1:15And we also have these kids or we have like jimsy kids, okay?
- 1:22We were like, why don't we just You know, in part are our wisdom
- 1:28because basically jeans Gen X is basically just a mix between
- 1:32Baby Boomers and we're sandwiched between gen Z.
- 1:35And I mean, I'm sorry Millennials and nobody talks
- 1:38about our generation nobody. And I mean, we're like they call
- 1:41they even lump us into like Baby Boomers.
- 1:44It's like so annoying. I'm like, I'm not that old.
- 1:47My mother is a baby boomer. I'm 44 not, there's like a huge
- 1:52difference. So yeah, I've noticed this like
- 1:56I'm like I'm a big fan of professional wrestling, for
- 1:59example, and I've noticed that like the probably like the boom
- 2:02period for that particular industry was the 90s which would
- 2:05have been primed Gen-X kind of and that was a little bit before
- 2:09my time. Like, I grew up as a 90s, kid, /
- 2:122000. So I was, I'm more in that
- 2:14Millennials. Kind of a group if you want to
- 2:18put like that. But like I still remember a lot
- 2:20of the stuff from the 90s and obviously I've gone back and
- 2:23checked. So all the stuff and I can see
- 2:25that it is very kind of distinct, you know, there was a
- 2:29lot of like counterculture stuff going there.
- 2:31It was a lot of arguably reaction to Baby Boomers and
- 2:37what to site he was putting out, especially if you look at the
- 2:39media around time and TV shows and stuff, like you still had
- 2:43those TV shows where they were trying to do, like, kind of like
- 2:46family Vibe, sort of sitcom type things.
- 2:49But then, there was a lot of. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:51Like programming. That was kind of get again.
- 2:53It's that I mean, why do you think Gen X is not spoken about
- 2:57as much as it should be? Because we were taught.
- 3:01I remember when I was a kid, my mother always used to say, kids
- 3:05are to be seen not heard. And that's what we were taught.
- 3:10Am I Wrong Keanu? Right.
- 3:13Yeah. And I think it still has just
- 3:17stay that way, is that I don't know?
- 3:20Like it's we're not that important and I feel like that's
- 3:24the whole reason for us wanting to start.
- 3:26This podcast is just to show that we are.
- 3:30Or in the things that we're going through, you know, Stan,
- 3:33from the way that we grew up in the things that we went through,
- 3:37and it's important to speak about that.
- 3:40And just let everybody know that.
- 3:43Yes, we're here. We've gone through things and I
- 3:46don't know, like to tell people what, what you can look forward
- 3:51to you. Once you get to this stage in
- 3:54life, I think it's interesting. You say, like, it's not
- 3:58important that I would obviously.
- 4:00SLI disagree with that and I'm sure you live with, as well, but
- 4:02it's, I don't know, like, I suppose maybe it's to do with
- 4:07the fixation on what's going on in society, at the moment
- 4:10because obviously with previous generations at one time, that
- 4:13was the dominant generation and it moves forward and then the
- 4:15older Generations, you know, they either adapt or they still
- 4:20live in that time, you know? Like now I've noticed that,
- 4:23like, for me, I get very nostalgic about, you know, the
- 4:25late 90s 2000s in particular but I recognized That's no longer
- 4:31the world. That's that was then this is now
- 4:34and sometimes you can almost kind of recapture that feeling
- 4:37and a song or a TV show or whatever, but it's past it's
- 4:40gone. The world is different now and
- 4:43it seems crazy to me that every generation almost kind of
- 4:47battles with one another. I mean it makes sense from the
- 4:50perspective of you if you've got like different opposing views
- 4:53and whatnot, like I get the difference between say a baby
- 4:56boomer have in the comment on gen Z and Vice versa, because
- 5:01there's going to be conflict of interest there because the
- 5:03perspective is different. But then I know a lot of people
- 5:06from that generation who were very messy Progressive and, you
- 5:10know, they've just moved with the times and they get it and
- 5:12they understand that the world keeps changing.
- 5:15But again, I just want to press more on how Gen X is not spoken
- 5:19about as much as I think it's, there's a lot of nostalgia as I
- 5:22mentioned before, for sort of programming, of the time, I feel
- 5:27like now into sight, you've got essentially Like a 90s Revival
- 5:31because that's one thing that always does, come back is, you
- 5:34know, the Revival sort of thing. So 80s is always a terminally.
- 5:38Cool. So 70s, I think.
- 5:40But like with 90s now, that's coming back and you're seeing it
- 5:44in fashion, then you're sort of seeing it in programming.
- 5:47One thing I want to ask you guys about, is what do you make of a
- 5:51lot of the TV programs. Now, that are beginning to talk
- 5:54about the 90s and, you know, Gen-X I find it funny.
- 5:59I was going on IDs not too long ago.
- 6:02I was watching a, I watched the first episode of that 90 show,
- 6:06right? I was like they were talking
- 6:08about Atlantis. More said, I was like, I have
- 6:10the CD. Yeah, I'm that old.
- 6:12I have to see. I was like playing that like the
- 6:15whole, her first album, or there was talking about Grudge.
- 6:18And I was like, yeah, I was in the wrong and stuff like that.
- 6:20Then I was also in, then you see like other 90s like BMF, there's
- 6:25something about the 80s. I'm like I remember is parts of
- 6:28the 80s. I was a kid.
- 6:29Both of us were kids in the 80s so your feral children.
- 6:35Hey so yeah, I remember like all this stuff from the 90 like you
- 6:38were talking about TGIF, I remember like full house and
- 6:43they had that whole comedy line or my favorite on Thursdays.
- 6:47He only remember, we were in the house and then it was like The
- 6:50Cosby Show first 8:00, and then there was a different world and
- 6:548:30. And then Ochi Using all the
- 6:57other stuff. I remember all that I was there
- 7:00for all that, you know. So it's kind of funny that
- 7:03they're bringing back especially fashion bodysuits.
- 7:06I had a bodysuit. I'll never forget him like high
- 7:09school at 96. I'm like they're bringing this
- 7:11back seriously. All right.
- 7:13Guess they were closed and that's why I think that's part
- 7:18of the reason why I feel like maybe forgotten is not the word.
- 7:23But when you think about it, like how everything thing is
- 7:27coming back to like stuff that we used to do in the 90s, like
- 7:31the way we used to dress the Plaid the platforms and just
- 7:37like he said, the like the music, even even new music is
- 7:44sampled office that that we did already.
- 7:47So, I think, yeah, I and I go back and forth on that because
- 7:52sometimes it'll be something clever that's used in a
- 7:55different way and it changes The song up.
- 7:57Oh sometimes it's legit just taking an old sample from an old
- 8:01song and then just wrapping over it.
- 8:03There's a song in the charts right now.
- 8:04That's done exactly that and it's an 80s or 90s tune very
- 8:08very well one-on-one and it's a good it's a good song like the
- 8:11person that rapid open it does a good job but it's it's not
- 8:14different. It's just dinner mean.
- 8:17It'd be like if I took I don't know.
- 8:20Let's say the violence was a teen spirit and then I just sang
- 8:24like in a country style over it and sang Something totally
- 8:27different. It's like it's worse.
- 8:29That's not changing. The song.
- 8:30Really is it? You could argue transformation
- 8:33but it's not. No really I don't know.
- 8:36Yeah for me good sampling is like for instance like with 90s
- 8:41gangsta rap where they took stuff from like the 60s and the
- 8:4470s and they maybe they took a sample.
- 8:46Like it's sometimes even like a really short song from the 70s
- 8:49song and then several other samples, put it together, slowed
- 8:54it down and then changed it in something else.
- 8:57Oh you know something like that. That's really clever.
- 9:00I feel and that changes up and that you could argue, that's
- 9:03truly a new, you know, new song. But yeah, I don't know.
- 9:09We could do, we could debate. That's the thing that I think
- 9:13about the music now is that they don't we used to do that.
- 9:17But like you said it would be like small samples of like
- 9:20different pieces instead of like just using the entire song and
- 9:26And and basically not even changing it up and it's like
- 9:30really do it. Well, Mac Demarco is a good
- 9:38example that he likes to sample. A lot of like old Japanese Jazz
- 9:43from like the 70s. He did it famously on chamber of
- 9:46reflection. I believe that big hit and he
- 9:49basically took like a really like chill jazz piece from the
- 9:5370s and then switched up and play.
- 9:56It's a different version of it kind of like with synthesizers
- 10:02and stuff and he turned it into something else and that's like a
- 10:05really good example of like a modern artist doing well.
- 10:08So there are good artists out there, but yeah, there is a lot
- 10:11of laziness to. So give us our props, we we gave
- 10:24you a lot and we paved the way through
- 10:47And I guess that's why I like it.
- 10:51Because after that for me, it just seems the same.
- 10:56I'm like Okay, who said a lot of the artists that I listen to and
- 11:00I know it's cliche to say this, but it's true.
- 11:02They're like lesser-known, or they're not as prevalent in the
- 11:05charts. That's where I find the most
- 11:06interesting stuff to be occasionally, you get something
- 11:09in the charts. That will be interesting.
- 11:11But even if you take someone like, Harry Styles, For example,
- 11:14the tunes of Bops, there are right.
- 11:15But like if you really break it down and compare it to what has
- 11:19been, you'll find tons of songs that sound similar, you know,
- 11:22it's so I guess it depends. Doesn't it like how far you want
- 11:26to go with it? How Mainstream music is versus
- 11:29how maybe, how lesser known is one.
- 11:31Good thing about now is being able to discover music, it's
- 11:35much easier. Now, back in the day, over C, we
- 11:38would buying CDs, tape, cassettes, whatever doing like,
- 11:41that's how I learned out learned about a lot of artists was just
- 11:45going to say, we have a store in the UK called hmb.
- 11:48Back in the day, it was a lot bigger and you go in there and
- 11:51like, I'd go for instance, I grew up on rock metal music.
- 11:54So I'd go and look at their collection and This looks
- 11:57terrifying. Let's get this.
- 11:59And that's how I discovered a lot of music, but then other
- 12:02stuff was like like for me, I played a lot of skateboarding
- 12:08games grown-up and I loved skateboarding and that's how I
- 12:10discovered like a lot of hip hop from the 2000s and 90s and then
- 12:15other video games, like Grand Theft Auto and stuff like that,
- 12:19that had a big influence in through that.
- 12:22You then discover several other artists, you know, And it's,
- 12:27yeah, it's amazing stuff, really.
- 12:29I mean, feel like, you got to discover like that part.
- 12:32Imagine going back further, especially if you're in the
- 12:36place law, Denver, Colorado. This is the 80s, something in
- 12:39Denver Colorado. Now or it's all pretty and
- 12:41moderate. Now, nothing in Denver.
- 12:43Color out of 80 where we used to say, that everybody in the world
- 12:46will get something before we did.
- 12:48So basically, we probably get it like a year later in our music
- 12:54stations, were not really Playing stuff.
- 12:56So we had to rely on like MTV or Word of Mouth at school, so it's
- 13:01like if somebody's playing like a cassette or something, sit
- 13:04down. If someone playing in cassette
- 13:06and school, we were listening to a were like, oh, that is that
- 13:11was that fat? You know what I mean?
- 13:13We're like that is so cool. So you it's different.
- 13:17How also we also got our stuff from radio, so We would like
- 13:22take the tape had a blank tape and then we like, you know,
- 13:25record it from the radio. And in that was our makes you
- 13:28hate, you know. So it was like before Napster
- 13:31came out, we were already dubbing tape.
- 13:34So I'm like when they start to getting mad like the artist
- 13:37especially Metallica and dr. Dre and I'm like, you know, when
- 13:40we're W tapes over radio, you know, what are you talking about
- 13:43copyright? We're passing that around.
- 13:46That's what DJ's were doing that thing, you know, so one way is
- 13:50was Hard to discover music when we did in the culture it was
- 13:54like basically word-of-mouth you didn't have you know much.
- 13:58And like I said especially from Denver Colorado, you just relied
- 14:01on the other kids with they were doing had no reference.
- 14:06Absolutely, I'm I remember my mom telling me a story about how
- 14:10she would record the top, 40 charts in the UK, and obviously,
- 14:15like you'd have the DJ talking over it.
- 14:18So, you'd have to learn when to stop.
- 14:20Just before the DJ's talking, stop your recording.
- 14:23Let It Go for a little while and start recording.
- 14:30That's not how a lot of mixtapes got me.
- 14:34See, my generation is bit different.
- 14:36What we would do is we'd burn CDs, so we would download a
- 14:40bunch of stuff online. Anything, we could get our hands
- 14:43on, but we ruined all of our computers with programs like
- 14:46LimeWire and frost were stuff like that.
- 14:49Nap still that and just completely fry our computers so
- 14:53that we could get like, I don't know Foo Fighters, back catalog
- 14:55or whatever and just put it onto CDs.
- 14:58And I have like some mixed CDs that are made from back in the
- 15:00day. So it's basically the same
- 15:01thing, just a different generation, but now that's just
- 15:07it's just change like there was a bit of excitement around doing
- 15:10that and now it's just, you just go on an online, find whatever
- 15:14you want this. There's kind of taken the fun
- 15:16out of it a little bit in some ways.
- 15:20I have a friend who still, he still has his like bunch of CDs.
- 15:25I lost my, I'm so mad. I lost my CD collection like in
- 15:28the early 2000s and that was like a builds up.
- 15:31When, you know, like member of those folded books used to have,
- 15:34I left it on top of my car and I drove away and all my CDs are
- 15:38gone. I was like, I was mad.
- 15:42I was like, well, I used to love taking the booklets and If I
- 15:51really liked what the artwork was saying, I'd stick it on that
- 15:53my walls and my door and stuff like that and have it there and
- 15:57like there's there's old photos of my teenage room where I've
- 15:59how could have an entire door plastered with all this stuff.
- 16:03This it's good times Vance, good times.
- 16:06I think that's a big, a big. I was I going no, I missed the
- 16:10artwork to I do. I really miss the artwork.
- 16:13You don't see that. Like, if you download something,
- 16:15you know, looking at the artwork anywhere, he's downloading the
- 16:18song or streaming it now, Even download any more extreme now,
- 16:22suppose. It's all about videos.
- 16:23Now, really, isn't it, if you're particularly into an artist and
- 16:27you want to explore that side of things, then I guess that
- 16:31content will be available in things like Tic Toc or
- 16:33Instagram, or wherever else. But, yeah.
- 16:35I mean, you can, you can still get that up because you say, you
- 16:38can download it. I don't know anyone that does,
- 16:40but you can maybe if you're more artistically inclined, then you
- 16:44just like that. You want to draw the stuff.
- 16:46I get, I get that. But yeah, even just owning the
- 16:49physical medium. I mean, CDs are still.
- 16:52You still buy them. I mean, that there seems to be
- 16:54this Resurgence. Now of, you know, making Even
- 17:00though records and stuff like that of new content, you're
- 17:03like, I've got like a Megadeth record and like, 2013 like an
- 17:07actual record that they produce new at the time.
- 17:11So it's there is that the vinyl Revival is strong and well, but
- 17:16I think it's it's like this back and forth between people wanting
- 17:21to have the physical media and something special about that.
- 17:25But to me like having like an old wreck, Word from.
- 17:29So the 60s that means something that's a bit of history in your
- 17:32hands but having like a new record from today, that's made
- 17:36ice doesn't feel the same. Like, I don't know.
- 17:39Yeah, because I've got, I've got a record player somewhere, at
- 17:42home back in back in London and I haven't touched it in years.
- 17:46I've there's a bunch of stuff in my mom's lost from the day I
- 17:48moved out and but I do remember buying some really old records
- 17:52and one of them was like a Sex Pistols record is like a reissue
- 17:55from like the early 90s. Put it in sounds like shit.
- 17:59But it's great because you hear the crack was like, oh man,
- 18:04that's beautiful. It's like my mother has Leo
- 18:09gospel records. I'm like, is she was having the
- 18:12gospel. Not think she has one from
- 18:14Gladys Knight. I don't know.
- 18:16But she says she's have a stack and hers got lost to.
- 18:19She led my uncle heavy and will they got destroyed, but she
- 18:23still has her old, don't you? I know, right?
- 18:46None of us. Could do the new ones do that.
- 18:50I know. Not like now it's a thing that
- 18:52they're bringing out the record players.
- 18:54They don't know because it's all new quality, isn't it?
- 18:59The old records like they would sound good when you obviously
- 19:02when you first bought them but then after a while they would
- 19:04deteriorate and I suppose it would depend on the quality of
- 19:08the initial recording. So you know if it would if you
- 19:11went back in the day and bought like I don't know Bon Jovi
- 19:14record that's going to sound pristine right?
- 19:16If you bought a Sex Pistols record or something like that,
- 19:19it's going to sound a bit ropey around the edges because that's
- 19:22how it was produced. But you know, just like CDs,
- 19:27just like tape cassettes, they kind of Irate over time and then
- 19:30you get that crackly effect and whatnot.
- 19:32But these days everything is really well made and top quality
- 19:37so it's not going to happen. Unless at the day you scratch
- 19:40the hell out of the CD or the, the record us works and it's
- 19:46skipping thing like did it to me and sometimes I thought like I
- 19:53was, I was losing it as I did, I did that, what did that happen?
- 19:56And then, you know, no, it's just broken.
- 19:59Yeah, right especially happen with video games as well, that
- 20:03was devastating. When that used to happen, it
- 20:04starts skipping. Once you get to a certain level
- 20:06in like no it's gone forever. I mean like the last game I had
- 20:15in this is sad because I was on punish me.
- 20:18It was a Nintendo like with the original Super Mario's on it and
- 20:23I was playing it too much and I had bad Grace.
- 20:25My mother hid it and me being a stubborn person.
- 20:28I am I just let it be hit. I didn't even go back and find
- 20:31it until she found in like many years later.
- 20:33And I'm like, I'm out of games now.
- 20:34I don't care about them anymore. So it was like, that's my like,
- 20:39but I have a friend. He's like a true gamer and I
- 20:41think he still has his, like, you said, Nintendo 3DS 3,
- 20:45something, I don't know. And he stole, he's like trying
- 20:48to buy up all his video stuff now, I don't know, like a really
- 20:54random memory for me, just then you saying that like I used to
- 20:57have the same punishment when I used to.
- 20:59These things wrong and I remember my mom would just
- 21:01slowly take things away. Like, oh, I'll take away your
- 21:04PlayStation. Oh, you're not allowed TV for a
- 21:07week or whatever. And then I remember just being
- 21:09like, OK, I just read them and I would just sit and read and then
- 21:13she'd be like, are you have you learned your lesson or what are
- 21:16you doing? And I'm My Own reading and I
- 21:18think that kind of pissed her off a little basis like because
- 21:20you can't really be angry but the same time it's like you're
- 21:23supposed to be learning a lesson and I was our guy, just wait it
- 21:25out, fine. Like, I mean, I still see kids
- 22:01about playing and stuff. I saw my brother's doing that as
- 22:04that when they were kids and stuff.
- 22:06So there is still that element. But now that generation is
- 22:09really fixated on games and technology and stuff, and I
- 22:12mean, our generation that. Yeah, as you say, we would just
- 22:15go out and just play outside. That was, it was like, go
- 22:18outside, like your parents would just say, like, you know, you've
- 22:20been on, you've been inside to on, get outside, come back at
- 22:23this time, for dinner, it's up to you to make your own fun, but
- 22:28we did Last time your kids were outside when they were little,
- 22:35they outside where my tooth, they never want to go out and
- 22:46I'm gonna play baseball. It's like do cycling or
- 22:49something or any of that. Yeah, I just don't get it
- 22:54because, I mean, even combining the two because obviously, when
- 22:58I was growing up we Have like PlayStation PlayStation 2, I had
- 23:02those things, but I wouldn't want to always play them or
- 23:05like, if I didn't pay them with sometimes, it'd be fun to play
- 23:07outside with my friends. And then when we got bit, tired,
- 23:10become in, get some food, whatever, sit down and play
- 23:14together on the PlayStation or whatever and then we'd get bored
- 23:18with, want to go back outside again.
- 23:20I just, you know, I mean there it was a combination of the two
- 23:22wasn't, just like games and only games and Steven to this day.
- 23:27I'm like they don't they don't feel like you know you don't
- 23:32have to really meet people. You don't have to you know
- 23:36everything is this technology. Well I mean because I all
- 23:41meeting people through that though on this just a different
- 23:44medium but I think the issue is more that, you know, it's never
- 23:48going to be the same as face-to-face.
- 23:50And obviously, you know, some of your friends are going to be
- 23:52online. I've got many online that I've
- 23:55met. Tiant people and we Forge like,
- 23:58real real friendships, but at the same time, free gaming and
- 24:03things like this, that that's like a particular medium is that
- 24:06your friends through that medium and then meeting each other?
- 24:11When you meet people in real life?
- 24:13Yeah, it's different, isn't it? But I think sometimes the issue
- 24:16is, there's this problem with differentiating between the two
- 24:21between online life and real life and sometimes you get to
- 24:25consumed it and After my myself to step away, sometimes because
- 24:29everything I do for the most part I use online as a, it's a
- 24:34tool for marketing purposes, for growing all that stuff.
- 24:39But a lot of what I do involve speaking to people like speaking
- 24:41to wonderful people such as yourselves and speaking to
- 24:44people in live streams and stuff that base still speaking to
- 24:48someone and getting something from someone back and forth.
- 24:52There's a lot of people they don't do that and it's I don't
- 24:55know. I feel like it in a away.
- 24:56It's it might be a problem for socialization, not necessarily
- 25:01but it might in years to come seeking me her room and that's
- 25:10it. Just if she has her phone that's
- 25:13all she needs. It still, have you two playing
- 25:15in the background but it's the other phone.
- 25:17That's all you need. I mean I'm like you sure you
- 25:20don't want to go meet people for what and I asked her she was
- 25:22like for what I'm like. Oh okay, yes.
- 25:26It's Am I Wrong Keanu? I mean, really, there's really
- 25:34what you think it is. If you had to have you ever seen
- 25:40them? Interact is so funny trying to
- 25:42get the new gen Z in a room together.
- 25:45It seems like they're scared. They can't speak to each other.
- 25:49They don't know how to speak on the phone.
- 25:50It's so weird. It's not like they can
- 25:54manipulate a phone real quick, but to speak to each other, I've
- 25:59seen all three of them because she has two dollars, and I have
- 26:01one, they're in the same room in all of them on their phone,
- 26:04they're not real. Yes, I don't get this.
- 26:09This is weird when you all liked it.
- 26:11But you know my Generations guilty for this as well and I
- 26:14don't get that. Like if I'm out with someone
- 26:16that phone is in my pocket, I'm not touching nothing but I see
- 26:20other people like their own like date night and it's a couple
- 26:22just sitting there with their phones.
- 26:23I thought, what's the point? Why?
- 26:27What's the point, right? My foot is this much for me,
- 26:31especially like when you're like when you're going out to eat or
- 26:35something like that? Like, phones away because why
- 26:39we're sitting right here. But your Broadway route?
- 26:44No, no one told me that growing up that you shouldn't be doing
- 26:47that. I just knew you shouldn't rude.
- 26:49Like, yeah. They don't know.
- 26:53It's like, why why is it a bad thing?
- 26:56It's rude. If I was, if I was a bit old
- 27:00because I when I got my first phone when I was maybe like 10
- 27:02or 11 but it was like a Nokia 3410.
- 27:06And you could do like nothing with it so it's never really an
- 27:10issue but if I'd have been better grow up later and I had a
- 27:14phone and love my mum would have my mom was very strict that
- 27:19would, that would have been an issue and I would not have done
- 27:22that. It's Olivia comes down to
- 27:24Parenting. I do that.
- 27:25But other days it's a weird one. I mean as you say like you
- 27:28interact with your door and you say like why don't you want to
- 27:31and they're just like I've got everything I need here and I
- 27:34makes you wonder, doesn't it? It's like hmm.
- 27:37And I don't know, I mean, there are examples of in society of
- 27:42where they're trying to get people to go out and do things
- 27:44more together and not use phones.
- 27:46I mean, you've even got things now like Retreats where you can
- 27:51go there and there's like, no internet, no phones.
- 27:55They take all that stuff from you.
- 27:56As I don't know how I would feel about that book up to reception.
- 27:59Like give us your phone and your passport.
- 28:01What is this? A robbery.
- 28:36Right. This damn phone.
- 28:42I never got that. I mean I just get what I need.
- 28:45I always do that. I don't care about flashing or
- 28:48anything, I do, I feel like if anything the more expensive
- 28:51stuff you got in their hand, the more that's kind of an
- 28:53advertisement for, hey, come grab me like this.
- 28:55Just like, wait, why would you want to do that?
- 28:59Yeah. Like when I was a teenager, what
- 29:01I would do is I'd have two phones and I'd keep the nice one
- 29:04at home, right? Well, Before you get right,
- 29:07because I grew up. I grew up poor so I'll explain
- 29:09this, right? So I'd have to have, I'd have a
- 29:12phone, the, I don't know. Maybe I got, let's say for
- 29:16Christmas. My parents would have saved up
- 29:17for a long time, and I got that, and that was the phone, right?
- 29:22But then I'd even have that photo.
- 29:24I used to break things a lot. I was terrible with stuff like
- 29:27that. And if I would, I'd end up
- 29:28getting a terrible phone and my mom will be like, well, don't
- 29:31you want to try and replace that about?
- 29:32No, no, it's better. That I have a terrible phone
- 29:35because then when People try and rob me, which happen quite a
- 29:38lot. They would just remember one
- 29:40time. Like, I took my phone, he looked
- 29:42at it and he was that. Now, you can have that back way.
- 29:44Wow. I don't think I had a nice
- 30:02phone, all the phones. I was given Well, I even had to
- 30:06save up for a better part of like, a year and a half.
- 30:10I do things like saved my lunch money naughty and do stuff like
- 30:13that or this was more common. I would have to wait until
- 30:17someone had a phone but they were giving away or something
- 30:21like that. Like second third handphone
- 30:23stuff like that and that's how I get a phone so it was always old
- 30:27hand-me-downs sort of stuff, but I was never really bothered.
- 30:30Like I even to this day, I don't really care about like having
- 30:32the latest tech and I feel like it if anything.
- 30:35Now it's, it's more. It's more problematic because
- 30:40like there's no differences between the phones.
- 30:42It's like oh I have the iPhone 13.
- 30:43Okay what's different? So it's got a slightly curvier
- 30:47Edge and it's an extra two hundred dollars, what?
- 30:53I don't get that. You carries me, that was one
- 31:28thing but now I'm a little attached to it because mostly
- 31:32business. That's mostly because it
- 31:35business. But otherwise I'm like, I used
- 31:37to always also I used to until recently until someone was like,
- 31:40you can just stop that before bed.
- 31:43I would turn off my phone. Yeah.
- 31:44Because I didn't want to hear like the little being being
- 31:47being me. Me me me because he's wake me up
- 31:49until recently. Somebody like, you need to stop
- 31:52that. Because what if I need to call
- 31:53you in the middle of the night, I want, You have my, I still
- 31:56have a house phone. So I'm like, if you really need
- 31:59me, call my house phone. Just below.
- 32:02Why you calling me in middle of the night?
- 32:03What's wrong with you? Fortunately, fortunately I'm
- 32:40learning, it's different with business.
- 32:42I hear that. I mean the only reason I have
- 32:44the phone that I have now and the social media apps that I
- 32:47have now is purely just because of all of this.
- 32:51Then the things that I do. If I wasn't doing any of this
- 32:53stuff I just wouldn't bother. I don't see the point.
- 32:57I'll quite honestly, I mean a lot of these apps are quite
- 33:00superficial. I mean Instagram is all just
- 33:03pay. Look at how great my life is and
- 33:05how wonderful everything Is even though I'm actually quietly
- 33:08dying inside, that's basically what Instagram is because I know
- 33:11no one ever Jimmy you ever see a photo of someone like on a bad
- 33:14day? Like oh you know the puddle in
- 33:18the road went all over my face and you know I got fired today
- 33:22from work like you don't see that that's like oh look at me
- 33:24on this wonderful holiday. Oh look, I got Scott mhairi.
- 33:27Do the all right. Great.
- 33:31You don't even have an Instagram again, I have no social media
- 33:34whatsoever. I'm like you, I Did back in the
- 33:37day, I had like the first Facebook.
- 33:39I remember when he first came out and then I got in an
- 33:42argument with Keanu, right there, and then somebody else.
- 33:45But it in the argument, I was like, all right, I could just
- 33:49got stupid. This is like we took the family
- 33:52issues. Now, we're learning and public
- 33:54Nails. I don't even know this person
- 33:56that commenting and I'm like, who are you?
- 33:59I see what the family reunions. Oh, get out.
- 34:07Yeah, I was like you can't find me if you do find me.
- 34:18It's kind of sad but if you know, I have no social media was
- 34:21living none, except I'm surprised you guys don't use it
- 34:28for for, for business know. Social me, do are you sure?
- 34:33And I had like my businesses I had to but I kept my face off of
- 34:37me. How about you Kelly?
- 34:41So now. So now we have it for the
- 34:44podcast, okay? We have Instagram, we have
- 34:50Twitter and I think we're going to probably start a tick tock,
- 34:55because that seems to be a big thing right now.
- 34:59But I'm like, her, I had Facebook Instagram.
- 35:03I actually still have Instagram but I haven't logged into it for
- 35:07like, 34 years. So so personally I don't want it
- 35:15because like you said and I looked at it I think the last
- 35:19time I logged in a couple years ago, I was looking at it and I'm
- 35:21like, only time I post something is my daughter's graduating my
- 35:27daughter's going to a dance like nothing and and I don't want to
- 35:32see other people like it's like when you know, somebody like for
- 35:37real. And you see like, say for
- 35:40instance, I know somebody has, I don't know a bad marriage but
- 35:44you see them post like oh me and my husband or me and my wife and
- 35:49it's like what a crock? I just feel bad for them.
- 35:54Like I I honestly I'm like, I hope things get better because
- 35:58this isn't the way to, I don't know, but I bet it's I guess
- 36:02it's just different preferences, isn't it?
- 36:04Like, I'm single, I have been for a long time, but I feel like
- 36:06if I did have a partner I just Wouldn't want to post about it
- 36:10like not because I wasn't proud but because it's like it's a
- 36:13private thing. Like it's yeah, but I get one
- 36:16into shit because I don't get me wrong, I get wanting to share
- 36:19your successes with the world achievements.
- 36:22Like, I've done it like I you know, it's cool.
- 36:24It's nice. But every like I think the whole
- 36:27continual updates thing is where I draw the line.
- 36:29Like I don't get like my breakfast.
- 36:32Yeah. Right because if you had a rice
- 36:37bowl, Nobody cares, early? Twitter was like that what
- 36:43before everyone kind of figured out how or what to use it for?
- 36:46It was all just like just had a bag of chips.
- 36:51Just had dinner. So do we?
- 36:55That's it. Yeah.
- 36:57What do you think about that? You know, our children's
- 37:03generation. They look at that all day long
- 37:07but, you know, they're in their phones and that's what they're
- 37:09looking at Instagram. Twitter, Tick-Tock and it's
- 37:13like, well, the Wake, they communicate is a lot different.
- 37:16I mean, because I would say the, I'm beginning to get to the
- 37:19point. Now, where I'm beginning to drop
- 37:21off as far as what I Stan's, I try to keep up to date with
- 37:25things just so I know you're because my community, on
- 37:28Tick-Tock, for example is ranges everywhere from like 13, 14
- 37:32year, olds were up to 60, 70 year olds.
- 37:34So it's a very broad range. You get a lot of different age
- 37:37ranges and sometimes, when some of the younger people come in, I
- 37:40don't know what the hell they're talking about.
- 37:42So I have to look up this stuff and kind of try to get an
- 37:45understanding of it. And from what I understand, a
- 37:47lot of the stuff that they posed is like visual its anime staff.
- 37:52It's memes like Fully familiar with memes, but like that some
- 37:55of their means it's like you need a ton of context in order
- 37:59to understand and that's what, like what huh?
- 38:02What like a lot of the time. It just comes down to Trends and
- 38:05such, but you, you have to like, sit down and do research into
- 38:09this. So you can understand.
- 38:19He's weird about it. Like, he, he gets Glee, the
- 38:23from, like, he'll post like throughout the year, right?
- 38:26Go like, you know, there's a birthday.
- 38:28He's someone, he's always happy birthday, right?
- 38:30But when his birthday comes around, he get so happy when
- 38:32people are like, yeah. Happy birthday signing and they
- 38:36just posting them. Like really, really like how
- 38:39many people do you actually know any?
- 38:41But yeah, he may not we don't post anything about us women.
- 38:44Like, no, there's no need. I see you every day when we post
- 38:48them for we posted, I've seen that with people.
- 38:52Yeah, people post. To each other.
- 38:53They're a couple and it's like but but like you just you know,
- 38:58just say to each other in the house.
- 39:00Like happy birthday baby. I love you so much.
- 39:04Okay, it's kind of sweet other than maybe I'm just being mr.
- 39:09Cynical, I've been single now so I just It is me over 18 years.
- 39:17I'm not posting about that. That's some between us.
- 39:21I'm like yeah, well we posted for who cares, there's many,
- 39:25many people in this world like a, it's all good.
- 39:29When people over share a little bit too much as well because you
- 39:33don't know what to make about that.
- 39:34It's like guys just packed us up, put it behind closed doors,
- 39:38it's no one needs to know about this Jesus for the love of God.
- 39:43Oh my God. I really like before my
- 39:47daughter, I never, I never posted.
- 39:50I never played my daughter's image out there.
- 39:52Yeah, now she's almost 18, she can do what she wants, if she
- 39:56has her own account, don't even check it, but between her and
- 39:58God. But, okay, I never put my
- 40:02daughter's image out there at all.
- 40:05Let's talk about this for a second.
- 40:06See, you place quite a lot of trust in her.
- 40:08As far as, like, navigating social media and being saved.
- 40:11Is there any particular things? You've told her like, hey, stay
- 40:14away from this be conscious this or you just trust her implicitly
- 40:17and slow get on with it. Like mean Keanu, we used to
- 40:22have, we call them PSAs. We used to gather the girls in
- 40:26the living room, and we used to just say, don't do this.
- 40:29Don't be stupid about this, any Council.
- 40:31Like when I do trust her, like, I was telling her, I was like
- 40:35you post naked pictures if you want to, but guess what?
- 40:38You will have to get a job. And if someone you cease, your
- 40:42tatas out there and you really, His jobs.
- 40:44You're not getting it so be careful and hey life I have a
- 40:49way of like, you know, life will get you life lessons.
- 40:52Yeah. I so I'm like I'm not gonna
- 40:54punish you for it but you'll learn it'll bite, you know.
- 40:59But I mean I basically raised her like I wanted to be, I
- 41:02treated her. Like I want to be treated, leave
- 41:04you alone, T mess up. And I think even with like, so
- 41:12you're posting this and some Like if some 30 year old come to
- 41:15you and you're 17, he doesn't want you for what you think.
- 41:19It's not luck. That is predatory.
- 41:22What your 30? He 70?
- 41:24What do you have incoming? You have nothing in common
- 41:27except us on the live stream the other day because we were
- 41:30talking about the idea of like the power Dynamic thing.
- 41:33There's like even if it is legal or whatever it's still just
- 41:37dodgy because it's like yeah you me as you say you got nothing in
- 41:41common and this person. I should be around people their
- 41:47age and they're not and it's like that's probably a big red
- 41:50flag right there. You know, you need to just avoid
- 41:52this person but if somebody's nice right, I think it is like a
- 41:57power trip. I think whether it's you know,
- 42:00whether it's a man or a woman you know, if they're I don't
- 42:04know to me anything over. I don't know.
- 42:09Seven, eight, nine years. Like, like what do you really
- 42:12have in common at a at a certain point like a like an 18 year
- 42:16old. Like she said, 18 year old with
- 42:18a 30-year old for what you have? Absolutely nothing in common.
- 42:23Nothing nothing to bring to the table.
- 42:26Other than, in my opinion, I can mold this person.
- 42:31I can mold them into what I want them to be.
- 42:35I can control them. That I don't know.
- 42:38That's how I think about it. Even, you know, even for a woman
- 42:40when they say, like, I don't know, especially at our age.
- 42:43Now, I could be considered a cougar.
- 42:47I think it's still about power. If I have money and he doesn't,
- 42:52I'm going to get you to do what I want you to do because I have
- 42:56something that you don't. So, don't you Dynamic really?
- 43:01I mean, I feel like an a grown adult to his let's say like if
- 43:05you like 24 25 something like that.
- 43:07I think you're old enough to kind of make your own decisions,
- 43:09but at the same time, as you say, when there's an influence,
- 43:13like money power, I don't know, jobs, sometimes people do things
- 43:18because of, you know, oh well I'm your boss or I'm, you know,
- 43:22in some way I can help you with your career, something like
- 43:24that. Like, you've got to be careful
- 43:25about stuff like that because it can really just be used against
- 43:29you. And you can find yourself caught
- 43:31in a situation where you don't know how to get out of.
- 43:34I think the trouble is, especially with a lot of younger
- 43:36women. They see, like all the guys and
- 43:38they think like, oh he's mature, no one, my age is mature and
- 43:41it's like, yeah, but if he's interested in you, that's a
- 43:46problem because he's fully grown man, like, you shouldn't be
- 43:49anywhere near you. And yeah, I might be frustrating
- 43:52the guys your age and not mature enough, but like in time when
- 43:55you go up, they will be mature. And that not, not every single
- 43:58person is immature, you know, but it's, I don't know, it's the
- 44:02Olivia learn I suppose sometimes.
- 44:07There's one time you're going to laugh.
- 44:12I remember this one time like I was really in love with and I
- 44:15was around Danny's age, probably around 1820 saw around there.
- 44:20I was really in love with this one, dude, Wildflower.
- 44:24We call them. He remember Leroy.
- 44:27And I was with, I was like, you know, I was my mother hated him
- 44:30me rightfully so and I was like, Ma, you know, God sent him.
- 44:35I believe God sent to them even more Like yeah.
- 44:38Well the devil sends people to and that's what I think about
- 44:44that whole pie. You know what you said about is
- 44:46like women, you know, who have that power Dynamic where you
- 44:50know they're young and you know they're impressionable and
- 44:53whatever. Yeah.
- 44:54The devil says people to just because he seems mature doesn't
- 44:59mean he probably is like from a if I'm like if he's your 1730
- 45:03you'll know anything or 18 and 30 or know anything so he does.
- 45:07SC mature, but if you put him in a 40 year, olds eyes, you'll be
- 45:10like that do still has nothing. He's not even with you hurt, but
- 45:14you don't know that and sometimes with your daughter's,
- 45:18you gotta live in let them live alone.
- 45:20Because I know, I can attest there being many times like we
- 45:23knew people being like, yeah, that dude does not seem safe.
- 45:27You love me, but you like me he's dreamy.
- 45:32Hey whoo. You had to learn the hard way
- 45:34that just is what it is. But I mean, Comes the like I was
- 45:38telling you seem like some stories were like in high
- 45:41school. Like there's a 15 year old an 18
- 45:44year old. I have no problem with that but
- 45:46not much 16:18, still don't have a problem with it like sophomore
- 45:51senior, but if you're like 18 and my daughter's in middle
- 45:56school now we got problems or if you're like I'm 18 and you're
- 46:00like 25 because always said 25 you kind of basically baked you
- 46:06already know who you are. You are and you're turning into
- 46:0818 year old. I got issues and especially with
- 46:11women and cougars, especially our age you have younger dudes.
- 46:14So always are like, oh I want a milk.
- 46:17No um no. I no I can't.
- 46:22No I I was 22. I know where you're going.
- 46:26I know who you are. It it can.
- 46:32Because I don't see Kiana with a 20 or I can't imagine.
- 46:44I mean You were 20 magic.
- 47:04That's just gross, definitely. It's it kid.
- 47:08That's raising babies. Let's quit.
- 47:15I agree. I agree.
- 47:17Let's move on. Let's bring it back to Gen X.
- 47:21What do you think? This is?
- 47:25What I mean about this show. I Like It To Go in different
- 47:27directions until because he's the relevant things about life
- 47:31on the You know, it's I think particularly with the
- 47:35generational divides, its even, even though I will say this
- 47:39about like, security online and stuff like that, is that you get
- 47:43taught about these things. But sometimes people have to
- 47:45make the mistakes for themselves and it's not ideal but you know,
- 47:49I remember my mom sitting me down and having the
- 47:51conversations about online stuff and she didn't know really about
- 47:54online stuff but she was just trying to be a good parent, you
- 47:57know. And I was always a pretty wise
- 47:59kid. I listened to my mom, I did what
- 48:00I was told and I was I was Lucky in that respect.
- 48:03But I had friends that did some Really scary stuff and they
- 48:08would lucky that nothing happened that you know it's just
- 48:13terrifying out there in online. Sometimes you have to be really
- 48:16really careful who you're dealing with.
- 48:20What do you think are the defining characteristics of Gen
- 48:24X? Everly.
- 48:27I think we don't trust nobody. I mean, we are always looking
- 48:31like we're skeptical in. Also, we are feral like when we
- 48:35say feral children we were feral children like our parents
- 48:40weren't tracking us. There was nothing to trafficking
- 48:44right ski. You mean, we had like member of
- 48:46the string around your neck. Like the I have like a shoelace
- 48:50around in that ground, he had the key on the bottom and you
- 48:53took that under your shirt. So, no way.
- 48:55You can see, yeah, we had that and we were based in also
- 48:59Independence, our parents were like, do this.
- 49:03You better learn. It wasn't like they sat there
- 49:05and taught this stuff. You was like, all right.
- 49:08We'll teach you once you go to get it.
- 49:11Otherwise there are consequences.
- 49:14What do you think? Future Generations can learn
- 49:17from Gen-X? I think the independence and I
- 49:21really feel like the generations that are coming up are so
- 49:26dependent upon Everybody else to do everything for them.
- 49:34I'm not sure about Millennials but like, like kids that are
- 49:40coming up now, like you said, we had to do everything for
- 49:47ourselves and I don't think that that's the case.
- 49:51Now, you know, it's a lot of hand-holding.
- 49:55I saw, I saw a little clip somebody I was talking about how
- 50:04What? It's like, like in a game.
- 50:07Okay? In a race.
- 50:10There was one winner, everybody didn't get a reward and now kids
- 50:17are like, I want it. I want it.
- 50:20And everybody gets something. Instead of like learning that
- 50:25you have to work hard to get it. It's just not handed out because
- 50:30you are who you are. That's a trick.
- 50:34On. I mean, I can understand, excuse
- 50:38me, the mindset behind wanting to celebrate people's
- 50:42individuality and our differences as beings, but at
- 50:45the same time, yeah. Like there's nothing wrong with
- 50:47teaching like competition and the idea of a winner and a
- 50:50loser. And I think a better thing to
- 50:52try and teach someone is that it's okay to lose Janome.
- 50:56There's this real fear in society in my car.
- 50:59If I lose, I'm a failure and it's like, that's not do more
- 51:03like losing. Is the most valuable thing you
- 51:05can ever do. Because that's when the lessons
- 51:08come, if you win all the time you don't learn shit.
- 51:11But losing is what teaches you the real lessons in life because
- 51:15then you can kind of go back and understand what?
- 51:18Okay, why didn't I win? What was that?
- 51:21Was that? Because I would just wasn't
- 51:23lucky this particular time is it because there's a fundamental
- 51:26thing that I need to change, you know?
- 51:29I mean, I think you learn so much about yourself through the
- 51:32hard times and the In life and you know, this is why I've
- 51:37always thought the things like sports and Jim and all of these,
- 51:41like, I always tell my followers to go to gym, not so much
- 51:44because it's good for them and their body in their and their
- 51:47Fitness. It's more about what it will
- 51:49teach you and life. Like, for me, it teaches me,
- 51:52motivation, discipline, the idea that sometimes, you know, you'll
- 51:59have your best days in the gym and you're absolutely kill it.
- 52:02And the next day maybe you won't do it.
- 52:04As much maybe won't be able to push yourself as hard, but as
- 52:07long as you push yourself to the best that you can on that day,
- 52:11that's enough. There's lessons like that.
- 52:14You don't always learn, you know, in a textbook or whatever.
- 52:20Like you just have to learn them through life experience that I
- 52:22think with the modern mentality now is they don't want to make
- 52:26people feel bad about themselves and I understand that but I
- 52:30think there's a way to kind of get around that kind of refrain
- 52:33it and show. people like, hey, It's okay.
- 52:37You just you just need to look at this a slightly different
- 52:39way. No, go ahead.
- 52:44I'm sorry. Mac, give out ribbons.
- 52:51You were like the red ribbon was like first.
- 52:54No, first place is blue. Second place was red.
- 52:58And then after that, you got ribbons.
- 52:59And if you suck you suck and now was there, we were taught as
- 53:02kids like at the closing end of the year, if you got a yellow
- 53:05ribbon, you be like least he tried.
- 53:08You know what I mean? Or if you got a white use like
- 53:11you suck, you know what I mean? Just what you got.
- 53:13And people used to display all their ribbons.
- 53:15You know was like, hey, I got one good.
- 53:18Glowing. I ain't get them all.
- 53:20But hey, you know, that's why we learn especially with
- 53:23competition and I wish my daughter had a field day.
- 53:26So when she was in elementary, I was like, yeah, well that's my
- 53:28daughter going to get. She was like, we all got ribbons
- 53:32for what and she was like cuz we all participate in.
- 53:35I was like, ah, you know School and college.
- 53:50Like, I remember a particular College, I got an award for
- 53:54attendance and I was like, what's this?
- 53:57And then we'll, I always in attendance award.
- 53:58I might see you give me an award for being here.
- 54:05This particular College, cause I was paying to go.
- 54:07So I would have been a fool not to show up, you're mean, and
- 54:10then like, bringing it back to school.
- 54:13I remember, we did School awards and there was one kid in our
- 54:17year. Who got hundred percent
- 54:19attendance. Like like he never missed a day
- 54:23of school ever, which? Okay, that's kind of an
- 54:27achievement. But at the same time, I sat
- 54:28there thinking, like, what you never had a sick day.
- 54:31You never what? Like, how and also just, I don't
- 54:35know, I felt like a bit of sadness hearing that, as much as
- 54:37I wanted to be happy for the guy, I just felt like, dude,
- 54:41that sucks like, well, we used to sometimes bunk off.
- 54:43I don't have the time of our lives, not saying you should do
- 54:45that, by the way, but just, I don't know what it was.
- 54:48What about school? Like it was the other stuff we
- 54:51need like and he was very studious and you could tell he
- 54:54was really happy with them proud of it, good for him but like,
- 54:57just I never understood that. Well done, but showing up.
- 55:30It's like, oh my gosh, instead of like, like as they're growing
- 55:35up, somebody saying it's okay that you lost.
- 55:39But like you said, what did you learn from that?
- 55:42And since they're not getting that they have this mentality of
- 55:47I deserve everything? Because I want it just because
- 55:52not because I work for it, not because I did anything to get it
- 55:58just because I want people say and I doing good.
- 56:03No, I was just gonna repeat that.
- 56:05This is what's going to take on tag onto that with my
- 56:10generation. So Millennials and gen.
- 56:13See a word that gets thrown around.
- 56:15A lot, is the idea of entitlement Where do you think
- 56:19that originates from? Because I remember, okay, I will
- 56:24say this like, as much as I wish, I grew up in the
- 56:26Millennials age range. I mean you know I grew up in a
- 56:32poor household like minimum didn't have much.
- 56:35I remember always just being massively grateful for anything.
- 56:39Like I was just proud that there was food on the table and you
- 56:44know, a roof over our heads and you know, we made the best of it
- 56:47like I don't ever Ever remember, being sad.
- 56:50And I remember my mom would be apologetic.
- 56:52Sometimes like I'm sorry, Chris, I'm sorry, we can't do this.
- 56:54We can't afford to do this. And I was like, happy.
- 56:57Like I was like, and I never got that and I think she was always
- 57:01grateful for that, but I feel like that was just purely
- 57:03because of her parenting that I had that attitude.
- 57:06But you know, as I've gotten older, I've realized there is
- 57:10this kind of sense of entitlement that people have
- 57:12like, instant gratification culture and, you know, decided,
- 57:20Okay. Listen up guys, for younger
- 57:21folks, everything in life that you want you have to work for
- 57:25it. Life isn't going to give you
- 57:27anything, you have to work for it, like everything I ever had.
- 57:29I had to work for, it wasn't given it on a plate, had to work
- 57:32for it. Where does where does it come
- 57:35from this entitlement? I'm going to tell you that, I
- 57:38think that it has a lot to do with the way we grew up.
- 57:45So, like, for me, I feel like a lot of the things I feel like I
- 57:51missed or I didn't have I give it to them because I didn't have
- 57:58it. And I think that's for a lot of
- 58:02people who have children that are our ages, you know,
- 58:05teenagers and stuff. Like there was a lot of, you
- 58:08know, different things that we didn't talk about different
- 58:11things that and now I'm like everything, I feel like I didn't
- 58:16have everything, I feel like I was supposed to have, I try to
- 58:22give that to them and I think that's where the entitlement
- 58:25comes from because they get things that they don't
- 58:28necessarily. You know, like when we were
- 58:30kids, if we got in trouble, they took something away in the
- 58:33story. More lenient in like the older.
- 58:39They get them. Like probably shouldn't do that.
- 58:42I probably shouldn't take it away.
- 58:50Why are you doing this? I'm on the other side of it.
- 58:54Where, like, I have an only child, I was Raising only child.
- 58:57I have an only child And the other side of it is like when my
- 59:03mother was around, right? Remember we were kids and we
- 59:06want to cheese are not Whoppers, or you want to achieve there
- 59:10were lying. What do you what do you need
- 59:12that for? We, can we have that at home.
- 59:16So once I have that at home, Will she deserves it?
- 59:53Do you remember me? Do you It is the interfere whole
- 1:00:01lot in which you don't give them, although they will give it
- 1:00:04and that's where some of the entitlement comes from.
- 1:00:07They deserve this and I'm like, but but you didn't show up to my
- 1:00:11play. Well, that's not the problem.
- 1:00:12But you should either minute. Wait, wait, yes.
- 1:00:17And that's mine. It will my daughter and goes
- 1:01:00again because my husband's kinging oh, she's treated like
- 1:01:04royalty. Like she walks on the ground.
- 1:01:07Anything she said, I want to go to see a kangaroo.
- 1:01:11They will go and probably fund the trip to Australia and do
- 1:01:15this this and they will go get it on like, well crap.
- 1:01:18What do you do with that as parents?
- 1:01:20What do you do? And I'm like, you forgot how you
- 1:01:23used to Parry need well, different times.
- 1:01:26I'm learning from my mistakes will crack.
- 1:01:30Yeah, these things. And so that's why they're
- 1:01:34entitled this stuff is because of that, it's weird.
- 1:01:38They're weird hurts to laugh right now.
- 1:01:59It's cheese on my burger every time, because if that correct, I
- 1:02:04remember my nan was like that, my pet, weirdly I had to
- 1:02:07reverse, my mom was always like, try and give me whatever she
- 1:02:11could give me, you know, because my name was really strict.
- 1:02:15My mom was also strict, but in a different way that she gave me a
- 1:02:18lot of freedom when I was a teenager.
- 1:02:19She was always very fat. She was like strict, but fair,
- 1:02:23you know, she's very like that. So I respect the way my mom did
- 1:02:26it, but I do remember going to my Nan's house and they were
- 1:02:29things that used to drive me nuts.
- 1:02:30I'll give you a few examples. So on the topic of food, when it
- 1:02:34came to ice cream and the ice cream, van came as a big thing
- 1:02:37in the UK, but no ice cream, ice cream cheese.
- 1:02:40Like we've got ice cream in the fridge and I, my obvious, it's
- 1:02:43not the same and she's like, you get what you're given.
- 1:02:48That's how we work. Yeah.
- 1:02:50Right. But the other one that used to
- 1:02:53drive be unbelievably nuts. Let's say she's preparing
- 1:02:58dinner. And I want a snack.
- 1:03:01May I please have ice cream from the fridge?
- 1:03:04No, you can't eat before your dinner, why?
- 1:03:08Because I said, so but why? Because I said so see.
- 1:03:13My mom would always painstakingly sit down and
- 1:03:15explain exactly. Why.
- 1:03:16And that used to, I used to accept.
- 1:03:18Those are okay, that makes sense, but my nan would never do
- 1:03:21that. She was always like, no, no.
- 1:03:23I've since found out with my younger cousins and brothers
- 1:03:26should Pony. She's lenient now, but she sure
- 1:03:28is, Wasn't with me. Yeah I think you're maybe your
- 1:03:35grandmother's like on the same generation with our parents
- 1:03:40because that's that's how it was with this.
- 1:03:43There's no question I'm not answering anything just because
- 1:03:46I said so my mom used to get a lot of criticism for the way she
- 1:03:52brought me up because she would get told all you can't talk to
- 1:03:55him like an adult. That's you can't do that.
- 1:03:57He's not an adult and it's like Like no, but by doing that, he
- 1:04:00will understand. And then I don't have to scream
- 1:04:04shout, get upset with him, he just gets it because I would
- 1:04:07listen to her and I do what she said, and I wouldn't act out or
- 1:04:11anything because she showed that level of respect.
- 1:04:13And she got criticized from everything from family friends
- 1:04:17school, like you name it. And in the end it worked out
- 1:04:20better. Because, you know, if she was
- 1:04:23like, don't do this about, okay? And then when she calm down a
- 1:04:26bit at why? Fun.
- 1:04:30Yeah, we ask. Why boom?
- 1:04:34What did I tell you? What did I tell you?
- 1:04:37Okay, you don't ask questions. Mm, tell me I'm wrong key on and
- 1:04:41tell me I'm wrong. You don't ask questions.
- 1:04:44It was just I told you so and if you talk back are you talking
- 1:04:48back to me? Are you talking back to me?
- 1:04:51Okay, you never. Never.
- 1:04:54It was some trauma that we have some therapy for now.
- 1:05:01I remember in the few occasions that I ever gave my mum rudeness
- 1:05:05or Trap Back. She'd just give me that look
- 1:05:08like, excuse me. What the fuck did you say?
- 1:05:13And I've been the worst thing because I love my motivates, but
- 1:05:16like she she really would like, just destroy me for ages.
- 1:05:20Like, I think the worst thing was the lecture So you guys sat
- 1:05:25down and she just talked for like an hour and go again and
- 1:05:29again and again to the point where I was so bored to tears
- 1:05:33that I just would never do it again because I didn't want to
- 1:05:35be lectured for an hour ago. This is like you said this five
- 1:05:40to do, you understand? Yes, I understood it.
- 1:05:42The first five times you said, oh, you are answering back and
- 1:05:44then that's another time to time.
- 1:05:54Two-second conversation in in and that was it.
- 1:05:56And they walk away. Walk away with pride.
- 1:05:59Do you like and, you know, here we are.
- 1:06:03You crying? Are you crying?
- 1:06:05Don't cry. Give me something.
- 1:06:08I'll give you something to cry for.
- 1:06:10Nah, I'll give you something to cry about, remember that?
- 1:06:49and I think that's the point of our podcast now is to say, hey,
- 1:06:53These things happen. But now here we are trying to
- 1:06:59make changes because of that. Is there any particular Avenues
- 1:07:05you want to explore this podcast?
- 1:07:06Other than just kind of talking about Gen X in general?
- 1:07:08Like any particular goals, you have with it.
- 1:07:12Well, my particular goal is like, I want to actually bring
- 1:07:16voice to our generation. We have something to say and
- 1:07:19it's our time to say you know we're older now and we can
- 1:07:23actually you know not only teach the younger generation but
- 1:07:26basically we're off or not only going most of us are parents to
- 1:07:30gen Z kids and they were also parents to our parents now,
- 1:07:34because they're older and having to be parents to both people
- 1:07:38that create some psychological, we need to get Get out.
- 1:07:43And for our generation most, we weren't brought up to half their
- 1:07:47EP. Especially in the black
- 1:07:49community therapy is like for crazy people.
- 1:07:52That's what we were taught. Like we you do we crazy oh you
- 1:07:55don't need therapy. Pray to God.
- 1:07:57You be all right. We need to get this out.
- 1:07:59Otherwise, we're gonna be crazy, you know what I mean?
- 1:08:02Because there's a whole lot of when your parents are two
- 1:08:05different Generations where you have to respect your mother but
- 1:08:09she's driving me. Bat shit, crazy.
- 1:08:11And then now, you have your Daughter, is she going to serve
- 1:08:14your she's driving me bat shit? Where you go and you want to be
- 1:08:17heard and you want to know. We also want to like you know,
- 1:08:21other people are going through this because you can't be the
- 1:08:24only one. Come, just be me that feels this
- 1:08:30way right here. Look at it, my God.
- 1:08:34I think, I think that's the point of it is that, you know,
- 1:08:37we're going through things and having a place where we can talk
- 1:08:41about that. That and talk about, you know,
- 1:08:43what do we do from here? How do we make changes?
- 1:08:48Is it okay to make changes based on the things that we're going
- 1:08:54through? I don't do the stuff that our
- 1:08:56parents kind of really did, you know, teach our kids better.
- 1:08:59Like I've never hit. I really never had my daughter
- 1:09:03when she was little, maybe one spanking and I was it was mostly
- 1:09:06lectures. That wasn't offered to me as a
- 1:09:09kid. We had to go get her own
- 1:09:10switches are off. Built.
- 1:09:13That's like that's not trouble. I don't know what it is.
- 1:09:17I can't tell you to do. You want to hit me with?
- 1:09:24So I've never hit my kid, really.
- 1:09:26I have you like ice water. I can't do that.
- 1:09:31Mostly she's the better for it, you know, that's what I mean.
- 1:09:36But they would call us pump earrings.
- 1:09:38Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:09:40I don't know, man. I think that if you can dish out
- 1:09:46some kind of, let's say they say punishments but without hitting
- 1:09:49your kids, I think that's an achievement, you know,
- 1:09:51especially if you can kind of create an air like where you do
- 1:09:54the classic like look like and then they're like, okay, you
- 1:10:00just little things like that, you know, creating more of an
- 1:10:02atmosphere rather than, you know, because I think as well
- 1:10:06sooner. Well, let's say you go too far
- 1:10:08the Other Extreme and, and you you set that as a precedent,
- 1:10:13then, you know, eventually that's not going to work.
- 1:10:17It's just not gonna be enough of a deterrent, so to speak.
- 1:10:20And it's, you know, I know everyone has different opinions
- 1:10:23on this. Yeah, my mom used to hit me a
- 1:10:27little Nothing too crazy before. Anyone gets any ideas, it was
- 1:10:31like, perfect, you know, within normal parenting levels, you
- 1:10:34know, and, you know, it kind of worked but it didn't.
- 1:10:38I felt like it what works more was when we would sit down and
- 1:10:41talk about things to be honest. That was the issue.
- 1:10:45Sometimes she deserved to get angry annoyed of me.
- 1:10:47You know, I was, I was never like a naughty kid, I was just
- 1:10:51rude and a bit too, you know, knowledgeable for my own good,
- 1:10:56and she knew that and I think, One of the, you know, one of the
- 1:10:59biggest things, my mom taught me and I never forget this, she sat
- 1:11:03me down. She said, do you really do?
- 1:11:05You understand why I'm so hard on you and I was like why?
- 1:11:07And she said, I don't want you to go out there and get a smack
- 1:11:10in the face. You need to understand what
- 1:11:14respect is about and that if you don't show other people respect
- 1:11:18and you don't treat people with respect.
- 1:11:22It's going to cause you some serious problems.
- 1:11:24And it's not until this age right now that I'm starting to
- 1:11:27begin. To see that in adult life.
- 1:11:30I see other people that clearly were not raised properly
- 1:11:33continually having problems because they don't understand.
- 1:11:36The basic respect that because look not every human being is
- 1:11:40raised the same way. Not, everyone is the same but
- 1:11:43you can approach each person you meet with respect and learn to
- 1:11:47kind of Then I had to put it exactly but adapt to them
- 1:11:52somewhat, you know what I mean? Like, some people, you can be a
- 1:11:55bit more chill with because they're more similar to
- 1:11:58yourself. Some people a bit more reserved.
- 1:12:00So you got respect that, like, it's all comes down to respect
- 1:12:04and that was the thing. She tried to hammer home for me,
- 1:12:06and that's why she was so strict and it worked.
- 1:12:09And, you know, these days, I'll be sitting down going to thank
- 1:12:12you. Thank you for how you did it.
- 1:12:15You know, wasn't always. Right wasn't always 100%.
- 1:12:18Tom. But for the most part, you got
- 1:12:20it, right? And I think she would agree to
- 1:12:22so yeah. Like you I sit down with my
- 1:12:28daughter and I want her to come to me instead of like I did.
- 1:12:31I try to hide it. I was like, you know, if you
- 1:12:34can't go to your, she was little bit literal, but she still was
- 1:12:39concerned and God knows, but there's certain stuff that I had
- 1:12:43to learn on my own. And go to her with everything.
- 1:12:49Otherwise it would be a you won't only be a lecture to be
- 1:12:51disappointment, and then sometimes a backhand until I was
- 1:12:55a teenager, you know, she stop hitting me.
- 1:12:57She was like the one time she stopped hitting me was because I
- 1:13:00looked at her, like, I'm older now.
- 1:13:03I just had it look like, you can't hurt me.
- 1:13:05She was like, it was time. I was like, that's when he
- 1:13:07decided he was talking. Okay, but you know, but you know
- 1:13:14it was the I couldn't. It's just something you just
- 1:13:18Don't do like, you know but we have like we're open with our
- 1:13:21kids and too much. We kind of overshare least you
- 1:13:24know, you should hear the conversations we have.
- 1:13:28I don't think it's over synonym when you're just trying to keep
- 1:13:31them from. I don't know to me I'm always
- 1:13:35like I don't want you to go down the same road with me.
- 1:13:38So if I have to tell you something, that you might not
- 1:13:41want to hear but you're you're going in that direction.
- 1:13:46I want to keep you from that. And I think that is part of the
- 1:13:50reason why our relationship is so good.
- 1:13:53Because, like, like, Tasha said, I can trust, what, what they're
- 1:13:59going to do, I don't have to monitor their social media.
- 1:14:03I don't have to monitor because, you know, right from wrong
- 1:14:07because we've had those conversations Absolutely love
- 1:14:15final quickfire. Questions for you, ladies.
- 1:14:17I'm interested to see how you approach these, okay?
- 1:14:21What's the best advice you've ever received?
- 1:14:27You feel this one? I'm trying to remember.
- 1:14:28I'm trying to channel my grandmother.
- 1:14:30They gave me so much. My granny, our granny and my
- 1:14:34mother gave me. Someone's wisdom over the years
- 1:14:36just like trying to channel one. I forgot.
- 1:14:42What do you got? Hmm.
- 1:14:49Just give 100% give a hundred percent at everything you try.
- 1:14:57And be yourself pretty much. That was me actually I'm trying
- 1:15:02to remember, I you just got. I like there's like a flood
- 1:15:05coming. Our I was like wasn't listening.
- 1:15:27Life lesson, you've learned so far?
- 1:15:33Time is not your friend. Time is not your friend, it one
- 1:15:40point. I'll never forget in my 20s.
- 1:15:42I was like, I have all the time in the world.
- 1:15:45I'm 44. And I'm like, man.
- 1:15:47Time is becoming, its kind of slipping just a little bit, you
- 1:15:51know, that's what I'm learning now.
- 1:15:56That's deep. I hit me man.
- 1:15:59It's true. I'm starting to see that now.
- 1:16:02I turned 30 this year and I'm like shit man.
- 1:16:06I'm no longer I can no longer sort of say.
- 1:16:09I'm an ignorant young man anymore.
- 1:16:11It's like now I'm just a man. Now, that's it.
- 1:16:14Like, I've just gotta try and get it right more times that I
- 1:16:18get it wrong. So Kiana.
- 1:16:26Forgive myself for past, mistakes and move forward.
- 1:16:32Don't let what happened in the past.
- 1:16:37Kind of say who I am now, hmm, that's an important one because
- 1:16:45we're always changing as well. We're never the same person, ten
- 1:16:48years from now, five years from now.
- 1:16:49Whatever it's there's, sometimes we can torture ourselves with
- 1:16:53the past and we really shouldn't.
- 1:16:55Yeah. Because bit like think I can
- 1:16:57think of like, if something happens to me now, like
- 1:17:01something - I'll be like dang is that?
- 1:17:04Because that means that I slept with 20 years ago, like,
- 1:17:40And something really serious has happened and it's a serious
- 1:17:44moment but he said sometimes life is just shit
- 1:17:57things to a close ladies. Do you have any upcoming
- 1:18:00projects you Show or some final thoughts.
- 1:18:06As far as for my final thought, is that?
