- 0:05Speaker 1: NFL Now is a production of the NFL in partnership
- 0:08Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio Salentations everybody hour or two of NFL now
- 0:20Speaker 1: Here on NFL Network. In the NFL Los Angeles Newsroom,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm Patrick Claybon. We heard from Pro Football Hall of
- 0:26Speaker 1: Famer and Packers legend Leroy Butler earlier today saying that
- 0:29Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers would break Jets fans hearts in one of
- 0:33Speaker 1: two ways, either going and not having success or by
- 0:35Speaker 1: staying with the Green Bay Packers. The reason not those
- 0:38Speaker 1: things are both options is because of what is new
- 0:41Speaker 1: right now coming to the NFL Network newsroom. As of
- 0:44Speaker 1: earlier this week, the Jets sent a contingent to Malibu,
- 0:48Speaker 1: California to speak with Aaron Rodgers. Tom Pellacero and Mike Garafollo,
- 0:52Speaker 1: our NFL Network insiders with us now on NFL Now, Tom,
- 0:55Speaker 1: where do we stand with regards to Aaron Rodgers and
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Jets? Patrick, We continue to wait, and so do
- 1:02Speaker 1: the Packers and the Jets, who have course flew to
- 1:06Speaker 1: Malibu on Tuesday to meet with Aaron Rodgers. Here's where
- 1:10Speaker 1: it stands as of now. The Jets want Aaron Rodgers
- 1:13Speaker 1: to be their quarterback. The Jets know in their minds
- 1:17Speaker 1: what they're willing to do in terms of the draft
- 1:19Speaker 1: pick compensation that would go to the Packers in the trade,
- 1:22Speaker 1: as well as what they would do with Rogers contract,
- 1:25Speaker 1: and the Packers if Rogers comes to them and says
- 1:28Speaker 1: that he wants to move on and head to New York,
- 1:31Speaker 1: are open to working with him to facilitate that trade. However,
- 1:36Speaker 1: Rodgers holds the keys here. He is due close to
- 1:38Speaker 1: sixty million dollars fully guaranteed in twenty twenty three, effectively
- 1:42Speaker 1: has veto power over any deal until they know what
- 1:46Speaker 1: Rogers wants to do. When he has said all options
- 1:49Speaker 1: are on the table, including played in Green Bay, going
- 1:52Speaker 1: to a new team, and even retiring, nothing really moves
- 1:55Speaker 1: forward here and the entire quarterback market, Frankly, as we
- 1:59Speaker 1: head into free agency in a few days, Mike remains
- 2:01Speaker 1: on hold, no doubt about it. And if you're looking
- 2:04Speaker 1: for from the Jets, they're not going to give you
- 2:07Speaker 1: one because they don't want to rush him or make
- 2:11Speaker 1: it seem like they're putting any pressure on him. They
- 2:13Speaker 1: kind of want him to go through the process in
- 2:16Speaker 1: his own timeline. Sort of his own timeline, I mean,
- 2:18Speaker 1: by the time we get the next week and free
- 2:19Speaker 1: agency begins, the Jets are gonna have to look at
- 2:22Speaker 1: contingency plans. So Aaron Rodgers knows that they're on a
- 2:27Speaker 1: clock in that regard and seem to indicate to them,
- 2:30Speaker 1: like from what I'm told, like he indicated to all
- 2:32Speaker 1: of us that a decision was coming soon. But I
- 2:34Speaker 1: believe he first said soon around Super Bowl time. I
- 2:37Speaker 1: mean it's almost a month since then, so I don't
- 2:40Speaker 1: know exactly what soon means, but the Jets certainly need
- 2:43Speaker 1: clarity before they get to next week. So we'll see,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and they will see, and everybody will see. I mean,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I know what it's like to put something out there
- 2:52Speaker 1: and to worry that Aaron Rodgers might see it and
- 2:54Speaker 1: might call you out on it publicly. And I'm sure
- 2:56Speaker 1: the Jets are kind of in the same boat. Patrick Well.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And as we've discussed, soon isn't just relative for people,
- 3:03Speaker 1: A time itself perhaps could be relative, and maybe Aaron
- 3:06Speaker 1: Rodgers sees it that way. We saw a manifestation of
- 3:10Speaker 1: time towards a deadline and the Giants getting everything done.
- 3:13Speaker 1: They get the deal done with Daniel Jones that they
- 3:15Speaker 1: tag say quon Barkley. Are they stopping there? They still
- 3:18Speaker 1: working on a deal long term with say Quon Mark.
- 3:21Speaker 1: They're still working on a deal, and I know that
- 3:23Speaker 1: they would love to get it done in the near future,
- 3:25Speaker 1: maybe before the start of the free agent window. But
- 3:27Speaker 1: now the real deadline on this is going to be
- 3:29Speaker 1: the middle of July, right so potentially this could trag
- 3:32Speaker 1: on until then before the sides get a deal done.
- 3:35Speaker 1: If not, he has to play on the tag for
- 3:37Speaker 1: this season, and I don't know that anybody really would
- 3:39Speaker 1: be happy with that. It's much lower than where they've
- 3:41Speaker 1: already offered him. I mean, they were into the twelves
- 3:43Speaker 1: from what I heard, they're up to thirteen. Probably gonna
- 3:46Speaker 1: have to go a little bit higher than that on
- 3:47Speaker 1: an average per year basis to get a deal done.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Ten million dollars would be would be an underpay, There's
- 3:53Speaker 1: no question about that. For sae Quon Barkley was now
- 3:55Speaker 1: eligible for a free agent contract, But because of that
- 3:58Speaker 1: deal with Daniel Jones, now the tag comes into play.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So Joe Shane, the general manager of the Giants, acknowledging
- 4:04Speaker 1: that Barkley is frustrated right now. A lot of guys
- 4:07Speaker 1: would get the tag are frustrated, But look, I would
- 4:09Speaker 1: say to say Quon Barkley, there's a lot of time
- 4:11Speaker 1: between now and the start of the season, and again
- 4:14Speaker 1: between now and the middle of July. So let's see
- 4:16Speaker 1: how this goes and it decides can come back together
- 4:18Speaker 1: and get a fair deal for a running back which
- 4:20Speaker 1: Tom is a lot of times hard to value. Well, Mike,
- 4:25Speaker 1: the franchise tag is not always bad for players. There
- 4:29Speaker 1: are certain positions where it is actually a weapon because
- 4:32Speaker 1: it gives them bargaining power. Running back is not one
- 4:35Speaker 1: of those positions. Because the tag number is so low, Barkley,
- 4:38Speaker 1: if you were to play on the tag this year
- 4:40Speaker 1: for ten million dollars, and we'll see whether that's an
- 4:43Speaker 1: option for say Quon and his mind. If he got
- 4:45Speaker 1: tagged again in twenty twenty four, that tag would only
- 4:49Speaker 1: be about twelve million dollars. So if you're talking about
- 4:52Speaker 1: twenty two over two being the baseline for negotiations, that's
- 4:55Speaker 1: so far below what sa Quon Barkley would view his
- 4:58Speaker 1: market to be that this could potentially present some challenges
- 5:01Speaker 1: in terms of Barkley getting from the Giants. Wood he
- 5:03Speaker 1: feels is a fair market off. As you've mentioned they
- 5:06Speaker 1: did have a significant offer out to say Quon back
- 5:09Speaker 1: in November during the bye week. It did not get
- 5:11Speaker 1: done at that time. We'll see how all parties decide
- 5:14Speaker 1: to approach this. Now as we head into the spring,
- 5:17Speaker 1: they've got the quarterback locked in. Daniel Jones doesn't have
- 5:20Speaker 1: that one year, thirty two million dollars cap number that
- 5:22Speaker 1: the Giants would have to deal with if you were
- 5:24Speaker 1: under the tag, So that part of it's good. There
- 5:26Speaker 1: are resources available. Can they close that gap? We'll see, Patrick, Yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 1: Quon dealing with the circumstances that previous running backs have
- 5:34Speaker 1: had to deal with, and now, due to the existence
- 5:36Speaker 1: of the franchise tag, perhaps that number not necessarily where
- 5:39Speaker 1: it could be for running backs, especially running back of
- 5:42Speaker 1: sa Quans caliber. As we look ahead, looking forward to
- 5:44Speaker 1: spending some time with you guys during the free agency frenzy,
- 5:47Speaker 1: some teams already making some cap space moves, Tom will
- 5:50Speaker 1: can you tell us there, Well, there were a few
- 5:54Speaker 1: that came in overnight. Patrick. You'll continue to see this
- 5:56Speaker 1: leading up to next Wednesday. The Chargers restructuring both their
- 6:00Speaker 1: top receivers Key and Allen and Mike Williams clearing about
- 6:03Speaker 1: fourteen million dollars in cap space there. The Dolphins doing
- 6:06Speaker 1: the same with Bradley Chubb. The Panthers announced the one
- 6:08Speaker 1: with Taylor Moton yesterday. They cleared eleven million dollars. To
- 6:11Speaker 1: be clear, these are what are known as simple restructures.
- 6:15Speaker 1: They are not pay cuts. The players still get all
- 6:17Speaker 1: their money. It's an accounting mechanism. The teams take a
- 6:20Speaker 1: big chunk of base salary, turn it into a bonus
- 6:22Speaker 1: which is pro rated over the lifetime of the deal.
- 6:25Speaker 1: That allows the twenty twenty three cap number to go down,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but every dollar spent means a dollar hits the cap eventually,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and those cap numbers for those players now go up
- 6:35Speaker 1: in future years. PATTERN looking forward to seeing how you
- 6:38Speaker 1: talking too fast? Slow down? I want to get all
- 6:40Speaker 1: this hold on. Although I try to smash something to
- 6:45Speaker 1: give you a time as a flat circle here, No,
- 6:48Speaker 1: that's it was a really sloppy stomp there. That's the
- 6:51Speaker 1: thing is a slightly mangled hexagon. No, any time that
- 6:55Speaker 1: you have a circle and you know it's going to
- 6:57Speaker 1: be flat from some perspective, that just like time. Just
- 7:00Speaker 1: like time. I always maneuvering, always furiously taking notes like
- 7:02Speaker 1: Mike Garafol Well, thanks to Tom Pollisaro, Mike garf Well,
- 7:05Speaker 1: the look at some of the circumstances around the league,
- 7:08Speaker 1: no worries about Geno Smith and three agency signing a
- 7:12Speaker 1: three year deal could be worth up to one hundred
- 7:14Speaker 1: and five million dollars, gets forty million dollars guaranteed at
- 7:19Speaker 1: signing Geno Smith and the Seahawks leadership having a chance
- 7:25Speaker 1: to speak today all right in Washington. Yeah, I wanted
- 7:30Speaker 1: to stay here. I was hoping we can get something
- 7:32Speaker 1: done quickly. I didn't want to have to, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 1: test the free agent market. Um, you know, obviously if
- 7:37Speaker 1: I had to, and then I had to. But I
- 7:39Speaker 1: think everyone did a great job at making this work
- 7:42Speaker 1: and now it's about, you know, having it payoff in
- 7:45Speaker 1: the future. Great day for us, and uh, you know,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and all of us had so much fun getting to
- 7:50Speaker 1: this point. There's a lot of years when Gino had
- 7:53Speaker 1: to sit there waiting, and the story that that hasn't
- 7:56Speaker 1: been unveiled about believing in yourself and confidence and trust
- 8:01Speaker 1: and never giving up is just it's a vivid illustration
- 8:06Speaker 1: for g and it's been so much fun to see
- 8:09Speaker 1: this happen. He always knew we just had to let
- 8:12Speaker 1: it out. You know, that was what you did. You know,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you always knew that you could do this, and that's
- 8:17Speaker 1: why when it happened and the opportunity was there and
- 8:20Speaker 1: you take over the reins of it, you handled it
- 8:23Speaker 1: so so flawlessly, and uh, it was grateful just to
- 8:27Speaker 1: watch it happened and it was as a blast. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: believe hopefully it's an inspiration, you know, to everyone, you know,
- 8:34Speaker 1: just to continue to believe in yourself, to work hard,
- 8:38Speaker 1: to never waver in your confidence, and then to be opportunistic.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You know, when you get opportunity, you got it wrong
- 8:45Speaker 1: with it, and so I believe hopefully everyone can see
- 8:47Speaker 1: that when they see me. I had a chance to
- 8:50Speaker 1: see Gino on the field saying that he would not
- 8:52Speaker 1: right back. He did right back by signing that contract
- 8:55Speaker 1: as James Palmer joins us now on NFL. Now, now
- 8:58Speaker 1: that the deal is signed, what are we expecting to
- 9:00Speaker 1: see from Gino in the Hawks offense in twenty three? James, Well,
- 9:04Speaker 1: you expect growth. And he talked about he said he
- 9:06Speaker 1: was throwing the football yesterday Patrick and the ball was
- 9:08Speaker 1: flying out of his hands. He's excited to get back
- 9:10Speaker 1: on the field because he mentioned it. Even though he's
- 9:12Speaker 1: been in Seattle for the last three years watching Russell
- 9:15Speaker 1: Wilson and watching this offense and learning it and learning
- 9:18Speaker 1: how to win. He mentioned as a starter, this is
- 9:20Speaker 1: gonna be the first time in his career, dating back
- 9:22Speaker 1: to high school, he's in the same offensive system as
- 9:25Speaker 1: the starting quarterback for two years in a row. So
- 9:27Speaker 1: they do expect growth because they were surprised by the
- 9:30Speaker 1: start of the season. They knew that he could operate
- 9:32Speaker 1: this offense, and we know the formula that Pete Carroll
- 9:34Speaker 1: has put together to win in Seattle, but when they
- 9:37Speaker 1: saw him out there, they opened up the passing game
- 9:39Speaker 1: more than they had in years past because he was
- 9:41Speaker 1: still effective with the deep ball, still accurate with the
- 9:44Speaker 1: deep ball. Remember tied with Josh Allen for the league
- 9:47Speaker 1: lead in deep ball touchdowns, and he was still able
- 9:50Speaker 1: to do that and still protect the football. They expect
- 9:52Speaker 1: there's going to be growth, but there's also gonna be
- 9:54Speaker 1: growth on this roster because of this deal. You know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: Smith said it, he wanted to be paid as a
- 10:00Speaker 1: top ten quarterback because that's what he believes, and that's
- 10:02Speaker 1: where the numbers stand right now. When a couple more
- 10:05Speaker 1: of these deals get done, He's probably at the start
- 10:08Speaker 1: of the season going to be sitting right about the
- 10:10Speaker 1: fifteenth highest paid quarterback in football. The incentives that are
- 10:13Speaker 1: in there and this getting done before free agency, Patrick
- 10:17Speaker 1: allows the Seahawks to now look at free agency a
- 10:19Speaker 1: little differently as opposed to this dragging out. It benefited
- 10:23Speaker 1: both sides the way this was done, and that was
- 10:24Speaker 1: talked about in the press conference. That can be aggressive
- 10:27Speaker 1: in free agency. Also a unique opportunity Seattle never picking
- 10:31Speaker 1: this high. They got four picks in the first two rounds,
- 10:34Speaker 1: had a great rookie class last year. Where do we
- 10:36Speaker 1: even start with this draft class potentially for Seattle James.
- 10:40Speaker 1: That's the interesting aspect of this Patrick, when you look
- 10:42Speaker 1: at them picking at number five that Broncos pick after
- 10:45Speaker 1: their collapse this past season. This is the fourteenth draft
- 10:48Speaker 1: John Snyder and Pete Carroll have gone through together. The
- 10:51Speaker 1: last time they picked this high was their first year
- 10:54Speaker 1: together when they picked Russellocoon at six, and that was
- 10:57Speaker 1: because of the previous regime. Because they win so consistently,
- 11:00Speaker 1: they don't pick this high and they don't have the
- 11:03Speaker 1: look to go after some of these top tier pass rushers,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and they could do that with number five. You look
- 11:09Speaker 1: at Daniel Jeremiah's latest top fifty prospects, some of those
- 11:12Speaker 1: guys right at the top, whether they're edge rushers or
- 11:14Speaker 1: defensive linemen, they can go after those guys with number five,
- 11:18Speaker 1: which is very interesting. But also Pete Carroll did say
- 11:21Speaker 1: this contract has not deterred them from looking at all
- 11:24Speaker 1: of the quarterbacks at potentially number five to build for
- 11:27Speaker 1: the future. They met with all of them at the combine,
- 11:30Speaker 1: and Judo Smith in this press conference said he will
- 11:32Speaker 1: welcome the competition, but will also teach a young quarterback
- 11:35Speaker 1: at the same time. Yeah, bottom three run defense. The
- 11:39Speaker 1: offense had a lot of success, especially towards the middle
- 11:42Speaker 1: of the season. We'll see how Seattle approaches twenty twenty three.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Thanks to James Balmer joining us here on NFL Now
- 11:47Speaker 1: to discuss the Seattle Seahawks. There is a notable void
- 11:51Speaker 1: in the NFL after twenty three seasons of Tom Brady.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Brady con where do the Bucks move? We talked Bucks
- 11:58Speaker 1: with Judia Batista and Sarah Walsh next on NFL Now,
- 12:02Speaker 1: trying to change Bill mauv on Dacent ain't no realrange
- 12:10Speaker 1: a very solid quarterback class in twenty twenty three. On
- 12:14Speaker 1: the way to these teams who are picking in the
- 12:16Speaker 1: top ten, some of them in need of a young
- 12:19Speaker 1: quarterback and some of them already in possession of the
- 12:23Speaker 1: quarterback of the future. So how does this shake out?
- 12:26Speaker 1: Let's start with some focus on the NFC South. We
- 12:29Speaker 1: see the Falcons and the Panthers there picking eight and
- 12:33Speaker 1: picking nine. Let's welcome in Sarah Walsh and Judy Petisa
- 12:35Speaker 1: for more on that division. And Sarah, we've got one
- 12:38Speaker 1: quarterback for sure in the South, and that is Derek
- 12:42Speaker 1: Carry's going to New Orleans. Everywhere else it seems like
- 12:44Speaker 1: things could be in flux. What are the Panthers and
- 12:47Speaker 1: Frank Reich have to say about picking in the top
- 12:49Speaker 1: ten and maybe needing a quarterback. Yeah. I spoke to
- 12:53Speaker 1: Frank Reich at the combine last week and also their
- 12:56Speaker 1: GM Scott Fitterer, and I think they're on the same
- 12:58Speaker 1: page that this organization is going to exhaust all possibilities
- 13:03Speaker 1: and all options when it comes to the quarterback position.
- 13:06Speaker 1: But I also get the sense that they are exhausted
- 13:08Speaker 1: at the idea of this rotating carousel that they have
- 13:12Speaker 1: had at quarterback now for a couple of seasons. And
- 13:14Speaker 1: in fact, bitter Or said, they want to figure out
- 13:17Speaker 1: the way to best fix this and not just put
- 13:19Speaker 1: a patch on things. And he said the best way
- 13:22Speaker 1: to do that really is through the draft, because you
- 13:24Speaker 1: can get a guy for five to ten years. Now,
- 13:27Speaker 1: you just showed it. The Panthers have the ninth overall
- 13:29Speaker 1: pick right now. They haven't used a first round pick
- 13:32Speaker 1: on a quarterback since Cam Newton back in twenty eleven.
- 13:35Speaker 1: But you know, another big takeaway I had from conversations
- 13:38Speaker 1: with those guys, as right said, the biggest lesson he
- 13:40Speaker 1: learned from his time in Indianapolis is what is the
- 13:43Speaker 1: best way to have stability at the quarterback position in
- 13:46Speaker 1: the long term future in the short term. And so
- 13:49Speaker 1: that is something that when you hear what they're saying,
- 13:52Speaker 1: I think it sort of gives you an idea the
- 13:55Speaker 1: sense of plans they have there in Carolina. Judy, Yeah,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I mean, the Saints realized that they needed a long
- 14:02Speaker 1: term answer. Ever since Drew Brees left, they sort of
- 14:05Speaker 1: cycle through a number of quarterbacks. So they finally got
- 14:07Speaker 1: their answer in getting Derek Carr. That means they are
- 14:10Speaker 1: the only team in the NFC South, where a really
- 14:13Speaker 1: settled quarterback situation, so that automatically puts them at the
- 14:17Speaker 1: top of the division. Of course, I'm not sure how
- 14:20Speaker 1: much that says. This is a division that was one
- 14:22Speaker 1: at eight and nine last year, and the Saints are
- 14:26Speaker 1: in a dire salary cap situation, so it's hard to
- 14:29Speaker 1: say how much more work they can do on a
- 14:32Speaker 1: roster that frankly needs some refreshing. Their twenty five million
- 14:35Speaker 1: dollars over the caps that they're going to have to
- 14:37Speaker 1: do some work there. This roster is good enough for
- 14:41Speaker 1: them to win the division, certainly, especially because so many
- 14:45Speaker 1: teams are still in flux. But I think the real
- 14:47Speaker 1: question is are the Saints good enough, even with Derek
- 14:49Speaker 1: Carr in house now, to take on the San Francisco's
- 14:53Speaker 1: and Philadelphias of the world. Probably not yet, and it
- 14:56Speaker 1: probably is going to take at least another cycle through
- 14:59Speaker 1: of the roster. Yeah, there was one team, notably that
- 15:02Speaker 1: was able to contend for Super Bowls and now Tom
- 15:04Speaker 1: Brady's Sarah, you were able to talk to the new
- 15:06Speaker 1: officive coordinator, Dave Canalis. They've got one quarterback that's currently
- 15:10Speaker 1: there in Kyle Trask. What did he have to say
- 15:12Speaker 1: about the young signal caller out of Florida. I think
- 15:16Speaker 1: they're going to give Kyle Trask every opportunity that would
- 15:19Speaker 1: be afforded to a guy that you used a second
- 15:22Speaker 1: round pick on. And it's sort of funny because I
- 15:24Speaker 1: think the narrative around the league is, especially after the
- 15:27Speaker 1: Tom Brady air you call, are they going to really
- 15:29Speaker 1: go with Kyle Trask at quarterback? And I think the
- 15:32Speaker 1: thinking is is, well, why wouldn't you try this guy
- 15:34Speaker 1: out at quarterback? Because you used a second round pick
- 15:36Speaker 1: on him, and you use a second round pick on
- 15:38Speaker 1: him because at some level you really think that this
- 15:40Speaker 1: guy can contribute and help your organization. Now, in the
- 15:43Speaker 1: very limited game film that Trask has in the NFL,
- 15:47Speaker 1: which really includes the preseason, Dave Canalis as he sees
- 15:50Speaker 1: a guy that is courageous in the pocket, that can
- 15:52Speaker 1: step up, and he's not asking him to save the day.
- 15:55Speaker 1: He's not asking him to win the game just on
- 15:58Speaker 1: his own shoulders alone. He's asking him to manage the game.
- 16:01Speaker 1: And Canalis believes in his new system that Trask should
- 16:04Speaker 1: be able to do that. So that leaves the Atlanta
- 16:07Speaker 1: Falcons the only team we haven't discussed yet. First of all,
- 16:10Speaker 1: the big thing to know about them is they have
- 16:12Speaker 1: the second most salary cap space right now, sixty three
- 16:15Speaker 1: million dollars available to them to spend, so they can
- 16:19Speaker 1: do a lot of work. And frankly, that roster needs
- 16:21Speaker 1: a whole lot of everything. They need an overhaul on defense,
- 16:25Speaker 1: and they need a wide receiver. But at the quarterback
- 16:28Speaker 1: position they seem okay with Desmond Ritter, even though they
- 16:31Speaker 1: have a top ten pick. He showed some things last
- 16:34Speaker 1: year when he was on the field. The Falcons, interestingly,
- 16:37Speaker 1: were one of the very first teams to put out
- 16:39Speaker 1: the word that they would not be interested in Lamar Jackson.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Remember they were in on Deshaun Watson last year and
- 16:45Speaker 1: did not want to go with the guaranteed contract. Perhaps
- 16:47Speaker 1: that is what is keeping them away. If you believe
- 16:49Speaker 1: that they would not even talk to Lamar Jackson, it's
- 16:52Speaker 1: going to be interesting to see how that plays out.
- 16:54Speaker 1: But with all that money available in free agency, he
- 16:57Speaker 1: should be an active period for the Atlanta Falcon. A
- 16:59Speaker 1: division influx when not too long ago, so much talent
- 17:03Speaker 1: at the quarterback position thanks to ju Batista and Sarah
- 17:05Speaker 1: walsh Im The view of the NFC South here on
- 17:09Speaker 1: NFL now, coming up here on NFL Now. Well, we
- 17:14Speaker 1: get a chance to see Anthony Richardson four point four
- 17:17Speaker 1: to three in the forty yard dash forty and a
- 17:19Speaker 1: half inch vertical, ten and nine broad jup at two
- 17:22Speaker 1: hundred and forty four pounds. But he also put in
- 17:24Speaker 1: work on the white board with coach Mariucci in this
- 17:27Speaker 1: edition of Drawbine play Come on in here, Anthony Richardson
- 17:37Speaker 1: for Gators. Yes, how you doing it? I'm good about it.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Thanks for doing this for you. Sit down, come around,
- 17:42Speaker 1: let's have some fun. Okay, So I'm watching you on film.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I'm watching this play. It's in the red zone that
- 17:47Speaker 1: you have and you ran it repeatedly. Remember this. This
- 17:50Speaker 1: guy's coming across here, and this guy here is coming
- 17:53Speaker 1: come kind of corner and he's got some kind of
- 17:55Speaker 1: digg and we got a Shalla cross right here. And
- 17:57Speaker 1: you're always in shotgun. Read this play for me, This
- 18:00Speaker 1: one right here, This is our man alert. It's pre progressing.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Let me go one to back, either say call the
- 18:08Speaker 1: play slot left dagger. That's it, slot left dagger, slot
- 18:12Speaker 1: love boy dagger. Richardson fires. So you're an athletic guy,
- 18:20Speaker 1: A dual threat quarterback. Right, that's who's the best quarterback
- 18:24Speaker 1: in this draft? I am? Why that is what I'm
- 18:27Speaker 1: cambout doing. I can do a lot of things that
- 18:29Speaker 1: other quarterbacks can't do, like what making people miss open field,
- 18:31Speaker 1: running people over, and then I can I can throw
- 18:33Speaker 1: the ball just as well at anybody in this job.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So I feel I can do it all. Who's your hero?
- 18:38Speaker 1: My mom is definitely my hero? Why No, just everything
- 18:41Speaker 1: she's done, everything that she came with doing. You know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: I'm growing up just seeing her hard. She works for
- 18:47Speaker 1: my brother and she in Gainesville. Yes, you're kind of
- 18:50Speaker 1: a rock star down there, aren't you? A little bit?
- 18:54Speaker 1: All right, Well I'm gonna show you a play. Okay, Okay,
- 18:57Speaker 1: be familiar with the West Coast offense at all? Not really? Okay? Well,
- 19:00Speaker 1: get ready? All right? So here's trips right, This is
- 19:04Speaker 1: why deep We did that sometimes so we could stay
- 19:07Speaker 1: big on big and he could help inside. Right. Zebra left,
- 19:10Speaker 1: This was a zebra. You know what I would be.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I would beat Jerry Rice. Ever heard Jerry Rice? Yeah?
- 19:15Speaker 1: The best? Okay, Zebra left? We put him in motion
- 19:18Speaker 1: to a stack over here. Okay, all right, and here's
- 19:20Speaker 1: t o right over here. Right. He's a Hall of famer.
- 19:23Speaker 1: He's a Hall of famer. You know that quarterback, that's
- 19:25Speaker 1: Steve Young. Never played and shotgun in his life. Anthony
- 19:28Speaker 1: played under the center, all right, seven step and we're
- 19:31Speaker 1: talking seventy four protection. Seventy four is maximum protection where
- 19:35Speaker 1: you have one edge over here and the back on
- 19:37Speaker 1: this edge, so it's only a three man route. Here
- 19:39Speaker 1: we go. This is JJ Stokes. He's gonna run right
- 19:41Speaker 1: through that free safety. Right. If the free safety isn't
- 19:43Speaker 1: cover two, he's going to run through that. We're looking
- 19:46Speaker 1: at him on the way back. If he messes around,
- 19:48Speaker 1: we're throwing it in there for a touchdown. If not,
- 19:50Speaker 1: if he stays home, here comes the zebra bake Byam
- 19:53Speaker 1: right here. Instead of a shake, which is outside the
- 19:55Speaker 1: bank is on the inside, all right, So he turns
- 19:57Speaker 1: his corner all the way around, and if that free safety,
- 19:59Speaker 1: and if he stays near this guy right here, we're
- 20:02Speaker 1: throwing that in there for a touchdown. You got that?
- 20:05Speaker 1: Pretty simple? How do we control over here? Here comes
- 20:07Speaker 1: too and he's gonna run either the shake or if
- 20:11Speaker 1: it's covered two, he's gonna run that to keep that
- 20:13Speaker 1: safety out of the hair of that throw. So that
- 20:15Speaker 1: is trips right, why deep zebra left seventy four Zebra
- 20:20Speaker 1: bake got it? Okay, who do you pattern your game
- 20:24Speaker 1: after growing up? For me, it was Cam Newton. He's
- 20:27Speaker 1: ability to run the ball and to the ball, just
- 20:29Speaker 1: be physical rights give me a weakness on the field
- 20:34Speaker 1: footwork at tims. Okay, sometimes I can get a little
- 20:37Speaker 1: ansy and sloppy. That effect your accuracy sometimes maybe at
- 20:41Speaker 1: times it Cam, but sometimes it helps him play for
- 20:43Speaker 1: you and not gonna throw the ball ball better Richardson
- 20:45Speaker 1: getting some heat, grows on the run and he feels
- 20:47Speaker 1: a striker. What is your favorite college moment this past
- 20:52Speaker 1: season's going against LSU. I'll just signed to create space
- 20:56Speaker 1: in the pocket and I seen in LA and Trevor
- 20:58Speaker 1: is right down, ain't go black black guy right there,
- 21:01Speaker 1: and they didn't. I just take off. Okay, you remember
- 21:13Speaker 1: my play, draw my play? I got it too. You
- 21:17Speaker 1: got good paymanship. Appreciate that seventy four? Yeah, okay, so far,
- 21:24Speaker 1: so good. Draw that up? I got. Well, we got
- 21:30Speaker 1: a triangle that center. That's goods you. Well, it's my
- 21:34Speaker 1: guy right here, all right? Stack, who was my guy
- 21:36Speaker 1: who was my guy that was zer Rice. Yeah, for
- 21:39Speaker 1: you occupied this side of the defense, or you're gonna
- 21:44Speaker 1: run the shake round as you would call it. Where
- 21:46Speaker 1: is he going? I would we would call this a
- 21:48Speaker 1: divide ro you know, you be wanting to divide the
- 21:50Speaker 1: feel and for the parlor. Now you want to occupy
- 21:53Speaker 1: this backside safety. This is the bank round as you
- 21:56Speaker 1: would call it. Okay, you know, just spind this corner around,
- 21:59Speaker 1: lose him and what's the protection? Seventy four? Nice pro max.
- 22:03Speaker 1: So if they're blitchers, you're still pretty good, right, Yes,
- 22:07Speaker 1: progression one, two and three over here with the alert
- 22:09Speaker 1: not bad. But when you go through these interviews with
- 22:12Speaker 1: these teams, Anthony, what do you want these general managers
- 22:15Speaker 1: to know about you? Just just like getting to know
- 22:17Speaker 1: who I am, how much I care about football. They
- 22:19Speaker 1: can see you know, how physical, how fast around far
- 22:22Speaker 1: I throw on the tape, But getting to know me
- 22:25Speaker 1: and how much I love football. You've done SI and
- 22:27Speaker 1: that's pretty much the main thing that with the matters,
- 22:29Speaker 1: you're gonna be all right. Many thanks for doing this area,
- 22:32Speaker 1: Congratulations for everything and good luck to you. Thank you
- 22:34Speaker 1: all right, Anthony Richards and everybody back here on NFL
- 22:42Speaker 1: Now and Sunday, Free Agency Frenzy begins at NFL Network.
- 22:45Speaker 1: As you've covered with live breaking news on every transaction,
- 22:48Speaker 1: league wad rumors from our insiders, and expert analysis of
- 22:51Speaker 1: every blockbuster deal. Free Agency Frenzy starts Sunday at one
- 22:56Speaker 1: pm Eastern right here on in FL Network. Let's talk
- 23:01Speaker 1: to one of those free agents coming up here. It
- 23:04Speaker 1: is Alvin Beacham on March fifteenth, who is set to
- 23:07Speaker 1: become an unrestricted free agent after playing every single game
- 23:11Speaker 1: for the Arizona Cardinals twenty two Perhaps a chance to
- 23:15Speaker 1: go back, maybe eyeing the spot where he started things
- 23:19Speaker 1: out in New York. So many questions, but we got
- 23:23Speaker 1: Calvin Beacham right here to answer those. Congratulations on a
- 23:26Speaker 1: solid season, man, looking back, looking at those those Arizona
- 23:30Speaker 1: Cardinals highlights, starting all seventeen games. Is this an in
- 23:34Speaker 1: your time in Arizona or perhaps an opportunity for you
- 23:36Speaker 1: to go back? You know it's it's an opportunity. We'll
- 23:40Speaker 1: see how it out plays out. Um, you never know
- 23:42Speaker 1: how the business will shake out, but you keep all
- 23:45Speaker 1: your cards on the table, and it's an exciting time
- 23:47Speaker 1: to be a free agent. The cap just went up,
- 23:50Speaker 1: so we know that there's more money out there, but
- 23:52Speaker 1: really excited to be a part of this journey and
- 23:54Speaker 1: see where it takes me from here. And so we've
- 23:56Speaker 1: seen the changes that the franchise is undergone, new look
- 24:00Speaker 1: in the front office, new head coach. Are what are
- 24:03Speaker 1: your reactions to the move that the Cardinals franchise has
- 24:06Speaker 1: made since the start of last season. You know, the
- 24:10Speaker 1: thing is, this is a performance based business, and people
- 24:12Speaker 1: perform well, you get compensated and you get get to
- 24:15Speaker 1: have a job. If you don't perform well, they move
- 24:18Speaker 1: on and that's just the nature of the nature of
- 24:20Speaker 1: the NFL. But I think, you know, mister Bigwell and
- 24:22Speaker 1: the organization have put themselves in a situation to be
- 24:25Speaker 1: successful moving forward. They brought in some key hires and
- 24:28Speaker 1: you know, we'll see how things shake out. Coach Gannam
- 24:31Speaker 1: was exceedingly excited for the opportunity to work with Kyler.
- 24:34Speaker 1: You've been able to work with Kyler up close and personal.
- 24:38Speaker 1: What's your view on the way that Kyler has matured
- 24:40Speaker 1: as a football player on and off the field. You know,
- 24:43Speaker 1: he started to take some steps forward. But the thing
- 24:46Speaker 1: is is I think a number of people, myself included,
- 24:49Speaker 1: we're excited to see him take another step forward. You know,
- 24:51Speaker 1: he has an evaluation, a healthy contract that he received
- 24:54Speaker 1: in the offseason, and we're excited to see him We're
- 24:56Speaker 1: go into that particular valuation. With that valuation becomes more expectation,
- 25:00Speaker 1: more obligations, and more responsibility. So excited to see him
- 25:03Speaker 1: take home those responsibilities and as expectations. Kevin, is there
- 25:06Speaker 1: a specific example of a moment or a circumstances you
- 25:09Speaker 1: can think of where you could tell people where Kyler
- 25:12Speaker 1: has exhibited a need to grow in a particular circumstance.
- 25:16Speaker 1: You know, I just think being able to spend time
- 25:18Speaker 1: with his teammates outside of the building. That's one step
- 25:20Speaker 1: that I saw him take a lot this particularly year,
- 25:23Speaker 1: and I was really proud of him in that particular regard.
- 25:25Speaker 1: The question is how do you take that up to
- 25:27Speaker 1: another level? How do you spend time with teammates during
- 25:29Speaker 1: the offseason, and not only just to select group of teammates,
- 25:32Speaker 1: but as many of those team as as possible. This
- 25:35Speaker 1: is a relationship business at the end of the day,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and when those relationships are strong, it bowls well on
- 25:40Speaker 1: a football field. When those relationships are fractured, it shows
- 25:43Speaker 1: on a football field. So if he's able to continue
- 25:46Speaker 1: to build on what he's already started again, I'm excited
- 25:49Speaker 1: to see what comes from. Let's talk about another quarterback,
- 25:52Speaker 1: because while you were in New York, Aaron Rodgers had
- 25:54Speaker 1: won one MVP. You go to Arizona, who wins two
- 25:57Speaker 1: more MVPs. If we're juxtaposing the success the quarterbacks have
- 26:01Speaker 1: had for the Jets with Aaron Rodgers, there's not much
- 26:03Speaker 1: of a comparison. What would do for the franchise to
- 26:06Speaker 1: have Aaron Rodgers there? You know, I think it was
- 26:10Speaker 1: in a lightning boat through that particular franchise and through
- 26:14Speaker 1: that fan base. Um, that fan base is avid, they
- 26:18Speaker 1: love the Jets. My kids still chant that Jets chant
- 26:22Speaker 1: from time to time. But I know it would do
- 26:24Speaker 1: a ton for that franchise and also bring just a
- 26:27Speaker 1: different level of excellence to that particular position there in
- 26:31Speaker 1: there in New York, Kelvin, at this point where you
- 26:33Speaker 1: would potentially maybe you could be going back to to
- 26:36Speaker 1: either one of those teams, it could be a third
- 26:38Speaker 1: team that you've played with. At this point, do you
- 26:41Speaker 1: think about the timeline for an end or is that
- 26:44Speaker 1: something you're just going to cross when you get there. Man,
- 26:47Speaker 1: I have no insight into when I'm going to stop.
- 26:51Speaker 1: If I can play three or four more years, that
- 26:53Speaker 1: would really feel good. At this point. My kids in
- 26:56Speaker 1: their school schedule kind of dictate how much longer I
- 26:59Speaker 1: can play. But if it was up to me, man,
- 27:00Speaker 1: if I can play or five more years, it would
- 27:02Speaker 1: be a blessing, a blessing to the people that you
- 27:05Speaker 1: work with. If you won the Community Award for the
- 27:07Speaker 1: PA five times. About to get on a plane to
- 27:10Speaker 1: fly to Zambie, tell us about the work that you're
- 27:11Speaker 1: going to do there. Yeah, excited to be able to
- 27:14Speaker 1: go and serve a Zambia. You know, donate it two
- 27:17Speaker 1: whales last year raising funds to be able to get
- 27:20Speaker 1: to garner the support to donate another well. That well,
- 27:25Speaker 1: in essence, does twenty eight hundred gallons of water a day.
- 27:29Speaker 1: That pretty much supplies water for three hundred people per day.
- 27:32Speaker 1: That's an essence for football teams. That's one NFL division
- 27:36Speaker 1: a day that that water will supply. So excited to
- 27:38Speaker 1: go get my hands dirty. My wife and I are
- 27:40Speaker 1: heading over that Saturday night, and excited to be able
- 27:42Speaker 1: to spend time actually doing the work. It's one thing
- 27:45Speaker 1: to just donate and put capital somewhere, but I think
- 27:47Speaker 1: it's another thing to actually be able to go and
- 27:49Speaker 1: see it, touch it, understand the people that are around
- 27:51Speaker 1: in that much like I said earlier, it's a relationship business.
- 27:53Speaker 1: I'm excited to go be a relationship start in our region.
- 27:56Speaker 1: For people who don't have to deal with this, it
- 27:58Speaker 1: probably comes as a shock that a lot of people
- 28:00Speaker 1: don't have access to clean and safe water. Having that
- 28:04Speaker 1: conversation with people, what's the reaction there, because it seems
- 28:08Speaker 1: like so many people aren't even aware that these issues
- 28:10Speaker 1: are being faced by so many people around the world. Well,
- 28:13Speaker 1: it's been faced here in America and it's being faced
- 28:16Speaker 1: at a much deeper level internationally. I mean, it's still
- 28:19Speaker 1: issues of water in Jackson, Mississippi, still issues of water
- 28:22Speaker 1: in Flitt, Michigan. There were issues with water when I
- 28:24Speaker 1: played for the Jets during the work. It's issues here
- 28:27Speaker 1: in America, but it's nothing like the issues that they
- 28:29Speaker 1: have on the global front and in some of these
- 28:31Speaker 1: third world countries. It's one thing to say, hey, I
- 28:33Speaker 1: need to get some more bottles of water. It's another
- 28:36Speaker 1: thing where you have no access to water, like period,
- 28:38Speaker 1: no access to water, you can't feed the cows or
- 28:41Speaker 1: feed the animals that you want to be able to
- 28:42Speaker 1: take part in to be able to feed yourself. So
- 28:45Speaker 1: water is almost like oil and gold to some of
- 28:48Speaker 1: the folks in these countries because they don't have access.
- 28:50Speaker 1: And I'm excited to be able to shine a light
- 28:52Speaker 1: on that, to talk about that and show people how
- 28:54Speaker 1: important it is to be able to do something about
- 28:58Speaker 1: you know, the problem where everybody keeps talking about, well,
- 29:00Speaker 1: let's actually go find a solution, let's find a way
- 29:02Speaker 1: to come together, and the NFL talks about it takes
- 29:06Speaker 1: all of us, all right, let's let's see what that
- 29:08Speaker 1: really means, and let's go do it, and let's go
- 29:09Speaker 1: find a way to serve you on the global front.
- 29:11Speaker 1: You can definitely make the case more valuable than oil
- 29:14Speaker 1: or goal because it actually impacts not just the material condition,
- 29:18Speaker 1: but the ability of people to actually live and especially
- 29:21Speaker 1: children have the lives that they need to have. Some Kevin,
- 29:24Speaker 1: you're going on this trip and you're going to be
- 29:26Speaker 1: helping and serving people in global communities, but also as
- 29:30Speaker 1: free agency is going to start, how are you managing
- 29:32Speaker 1: the time to juxtapose those conversations with the work that
- 29:36Speaker 1: you're doing. Man, those conversations will happen naturally. I put
- 29:41Speaker 1: my best foot forward for seventeen weeks throughout the NFL season.
- 29:45Speaker 1: That work and that body of work speaks for itself.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's nothing that I can say there's going to change
- 29:49Speaker 1: the mind of what you see on take. Mike Thoma
- 29:51Speaker 1: used to say this all the time. You're fim is
- 29:53Speaker 1: your walking, talking, breathing resume. I let the film do
- 29:56Speaker 1: the talking, and if somebody wants to take part in
- 29:59Speaker 1: the services that I offer, they know how to get
- 30:01Speaker 1: in touch with me. Exceedingly simple. The man's had so
- 30:04Speaker 1: much success help so many people. It just lays it
- 30:07Speaker 1: out playing Kelvin, thank you so much, not just for
- 30:09Speaker 1: coming on the show, but for the work that you've
- 30:11Speaker 1: always done in the work you're about to do down
- 30:12Speaker 1: in Zambie. Thanks for spending time with us on NFL
- 30:14Speaker 1: Now anytime. Thanks for having me. NFL Now is a
