- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37But there are other decisions that we have to make for Jesus
- 0:40Christ rather be on our jobs, in our communities or even in our
- 0:45families. When we have to make the
- 0:48decision that we will not denounce, we will not deny, we
- 0:53will not turn from Jesus Christ, we will not disown it.
- 0:58And that's exactly what this means when he says if we deny
- 1:02Him, it means if we disown him, we disown Him before men, He
- 1:07would disown us before the Father.
- 1:09There's a lot of pressure in our world today to deny the name of
- 1:13Jesus. It's become a bit taboo to say
- 1:16that you follow Jesus. It's perfectly OK to be
- 1:20spiritual. But to say that Jesus is your
- 1:23king? That can bring on the ire of the
- 1:26masses. Pastor Lewis shares today that
- 1:29we need to be ready to stand for Jesus no matter what the world
- 1:34tells us. But what if it's a friend or
- 1:36family member who's pressuring you to take it easy about your
- 1:39faith in Jesus? It doesn't matter.
- 1:42Jesus died for you. You are called to stand for him.
- 1:46Now. Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book
- 1:48of Second Timothy, Chapter 2, with today's edition of Living
- 1:52Waters of Grace. Paul was looking at imminent
- 1:55execution. He was looking to be executed.
- 1:58So he was giving his son in the faith, Timothy, last words,
- 2:04important words that would help him to carry the mantle, to do
- 2:10the job that he had began to do, to carry the mantle, that he
- 2:14would be the pastor of this church in Ephesus, but that even
- 2:18more than that, he would be the man of God that God was calling
- 2:21him to be. And in doing so, Paul thought it
- 2:25was necessary to impart to him instruction just as he is
- 2:31imparting it to us as well, to help us to live a life that's
- 2:35pleasing to God. So when we start here in verse
- 2:3911, the first thing we read is this is a faithful saying or
- 2:43this is a trustworthy saying. You can believe this, you can
- 2:48live by this. This is something that you can
- 2:50take with you, Timothy. And he goes on to once again
- 2:55emphasize the promise of life, which is in the gospel that Paul
- 3:01was emphasizing at the very beginning of this journey.
- 3:05And he says here, for if we died with him, we shall also live
- 3:11with him. Now that's especially important
- 3:14to Paul because he's facing death.
- 3:17So as he sits in this prison and he's thinking about these things
- 3:21and he's thinking about the promise that he has in Christ
- 3:25Jesus that if we die with him, that we will also live with him.
- 3:30Paul's encouraging himself as well as he's encouraging
- 3:33Timothy. And that's exactly what the word
- 3:36of God does. When we read the Word of God or
- 3:39we study the word of God, it encourages us.
- 3:42And when we share the word of God with other people, it
- 3:44encourages them. But even in our encouraging with
- 3:48other people and sharing the word with other people, we also
- 3:51encourage ourselves, which is why it's so important to
- 3:54continue to talk about the things of God, because we
- 3:57encourage not only other people, we encourage ourselves as we do
- 4:01that. So he said if we die together,
- 4:04we also live together. In Romans 6 and 8, the Bible
- 4:09says now if we die with Christ, we believe that we shall also
- 4:14live with him. And I'm sure Paul is, is
- 4:17thinking about these kind of things now.
- 4:19And when we think about the dying, obviously, you know,
- 4:22Jesus tells us that we are to, you know, deny ourselves that we
- 4:26are to pick up our cross and we're to follow him.
- 4:29So we do give ourselves away. We die to ourselves when we get
- 4:33saved, when we trust Jesus Christ for our salvation.
- 4:36We do die to ourselves. We die to our old life.
- 4:40We die to our old way of being, our old way of thinking, our old
- 4:44way of speaking, the things that we used to do.
- 4:46We die to those things. We die to those old sins.
- 4:50And it's almost symbolic because there's two sacraments that we
- 4:53have. The one obviously is baptism and
- 4:56the other one is the one that we do every Sunday when we take the
- 5:00Holy Table. But in the sacrament of Baptism,
- 5:04it is a symbol of what has happened on the inside of us.
- 5:10So when he talks about baptism, as he goes down, as we go down
- 5:15into the watery grave, that symbolizes Christ going into the
- 5:19grave upon his death. But when he we raise up out of
- 5:24there, we that symbolizes Jesus Christ raising up into
- 5:28resurrection of new life. And that's us.
- 5:31We, we rise with Jesus Christ in new life, we die with him and we
- 5:36live with Jesus Christ. Galatians 2 and 20 says I have
- 5:40been crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live not I, but
- 5:46Christ lives in me, in the life which I now live in the flesh.
- 5:52I live it by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave
- 5:58himself for me. We also understand that in 2nd
- 6:03Corinthians 5 and 17 says if anyone is in Christ, he is a new
- 6:07creation. Old things have passed away,
- 6:11they've died, they've died. Old things have passed away.
- 6:14That old me, they passed away and behold, all things have
- 6:19become new and we are all new in Christ Jesus and we're grateful
- 6:25for that. So he says if you die with him,
- 6:27we should also live with him. So basically he's telling Tim,
- 6:30Timothy, don't be afraid of the persecutions.
- 6:33We know that Nero is taking people out.
- 6:35People are dying for the faith. And he's basically encouraging
- 6:40Timothy to say, this could happen to you, Timothy, there's
- 6:43no question about it, it could happen to you.
- 6:47But be encouraged because if we die with him, we shall also live
- 6:54with Him. Amen.
- 6:56So then we go to verse 12 and he says if we endure, we shall also
- 7:00reign with Him. If we endure, if we endure
- 7:03persecution, if we endure suffering, we will also reign
- 7:09with him. There's that reward.
- 7:10We get a reward for enduring and we're enduring now.
- 7:14I mean, we, we endure. We're obviously nothing like the
- 7:17persecution that Timothy or Paul, Peter and the like have
- 7:23gone through. Each one of the apostles other
- 7:25than John was martyred. But there was a strength that
- 7:31people who live for Christ get when they hold on and they
- 7:36endure the persecution. There's a strength, and Paul is
- 7:41saying here that if we share in the suffering and in the
- 7:45persecutions and we persevere in the faith, we don't give up, we
- 7:49don't give out, we don't throw in the towel.
- 7:52The hope is that we're going to reign with him.
- 7:55It makes us stronger. There's a quote that I want to
- 7:58share with you and it just simply says at the timberline
- 8:02where the storms strike with the most fury, the sturdiest trees
- 8:09are found. When we go through the hardest
- 8:13trials, the hardest test, when we're in the hottest part of the
- 8:17furnace. When we come out of that, we
- 8:21become sturdier. Sturdier in Christ Jesus.
- 8:25It's a time of preparation. So he says if we endure, we
- 8:31shall also reign with Him. Revelations 3 and 21 says to him
- 8:36who overcomes, I will grant to sit with me on my throne, as I
- 8:41also overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.
- 8:46Mark 13 and 13 says, And you shall be hated for my name's
- 8:50sake. You shall be not.
- 8:52You might be. You will be hated for my name's
- 8:54sake. Please don't think that there's
- 8:56not people out there who hate us because of Jesus Christ.
- 9:01That's the only reason they hate us because of Jesus Christ.
- 9:05We stand for that name, but he also says, but he who endures to
- 9:10the end shall be saved. We go on here to the second
- 9:14part, which is a very interesting line.
- 9:16And Paul, once again, thinking about the times in which he's
- 9:20living at that particular time and all the things that's going
- 9:23around him, he simply says this. If we deny him, he also will
- 9:28deny us. That's very significant because
- 9:31back at that particular time when they were going through the
- 9:33persecutions, whenever the governors or the officers or the
- 9:39Nero soldiers, when they would, when they would bring them in,
- 9:42these Christians in and they would gather them together
- 9:46before they would send them to the lions or before they would
- 9:49threaten to behead them or before they would Pierce them
- 9:52through with the sword, they would give them an option, a
- 9:56chance to deny Jesus Christ. They would ask, do you want to
- 10:02denounce them? Will you denounce that name?
- 10:05And it's those who would hold on to the end and not deny Jesus
- 10:09Christ. Many did not.
- 10:12There's a book that I have called the The Soldiers, God
- 10:15Soldiers. And it's just full of men who
- 10:19gave their life for Christ generally during the time of
- 10:23Reformation. But they gave their life because
- 10:26when they were caught or they were arrested and they were tied
- 10:30up to a stake to be burned before they would set the fire,
- 10:33they would ask them, do you want to denounce that name?
- 10:37And they would say no. And all of these men died a
- 10:42horrific death of a martyr, every one of them.
- 10:47But also wanted to let you know, remind you, I want to remind you
- 10:51that 23 years ago, two kids, one named Dylan Kleibld, the other
- 10:57named Eric Harris, walked into a high school in Colorado called
- 11:02Columbine. And they proceeded to open fire
- 11:06and kill 12 people before they, well, 13 people actually, before
- 11:11they turned the guns on themselves.
- 11:13These are obviously very troubled young men, but they
- 11:16came to a young lady whose name was Cassie Bernard.
- 11:19And she was well known as a as a Christian strong believer.
- 11:23And they asked her a question. Eric Harris was the one that put
- 11:27the gun to her head and asked her a question.
- 11:30He asked her, do you still believe in your Jesus now?
- 11:34And she said yes. And he shot her.
- 11:38Her life was cut short at age 17 because she said yes.
- 11:44I don't know that anyone in here will ever have to deal with
- 11:47that, would ever have to make that decision.
- 11:50But there are other decisions that we have to make for Jesus
- 11:54Christ rather be on our jobs, in our communities, or even in our
- 11:58families where we have to make the decision that we will not
- 12:03denounce, we will not deny, we will not turn from Jesus Christ,
- 12:09we will not disown him. And that's exactly what this
- 12:13means when he says if we deny Him, it means if we disown him.
- 12:17If we disown Him before men, he would disown us before the
- 12:21Father. So there may be a time when we
- 12:24have to stand and have to accept whatever consequence that's
- 12:29coming if we do not deny or disown Jesus Christ.
- 12:35Now, none of us know exactly what we would do at that
- 12:37particular time, but I pray that God gives me the strength.
- 12:41The way he gave it to Cassie when?
- 12:44The way he gave it to so many of those reformers, the way he gave
- 12:48it to Peter, the way he gave it to Paul, the way he gave it to
- 12:52Philip and all the other apostles who were martyred at
- 12:56that particular time. I pray that the power of Christ
- 13:01would be upon me at that time and that I am able to sing a
- 13:06hymn instead of denounce my Savior.
- 13:11And I pray that each one of you would have the power to do that
- 13:13as well. We don't know, but it may come.
- 13:18Fear is usually the reason why people do denounce Jesus Christ.
- 13:22Fear. And Paul's already told us
- 13:26earlier that God did not give us a spirit of fear.
- 13:31But we have a spirit of power of love and a sound mind.
- 13:36And I pray that in that time that we would be able to have
- 13:39the power to not disown our Savior.
- 13:43Then he goes on to the 13 and he says if we are faithless, he
- 13:47remains faithful. He cannot deny himself.
- 13:51It's a very interesting line there because he's saying if we
- 13:53are faithless now, he didn't say if you were have, if you have
- 13:56little faith. He said if you are faithless, if
- 14:00you don't believe, if you don't believe, he remains faithful.
- 14:07He cannot deny himself. In the book of Numbers, the
- 14:12Bible says that he is not a man, that he should lie, nor is he
- 14:18the Son of Man, that he should repent.
- 14:21So he will never do anything contrary to his character.
- 14:26He will never do anything contrary to his word.
- 14:30Whatever he promised, he will do.
- 14:34Now for us, that can be a good thing.
- 14:37For believers, that can be a good thing.
- 14:39If we think about, if we think about what happened with
- 14:43Abraham, think about what happened with David.
- 14:46They were all promised something, but they all showed
- 14:50at one point or another, they showed a lack of faith.
- 14:53But God was faithful in every one of those situations.
- 14:58And not only is God faithful, but even in the times when
- 15:03someone doesn't believe at all, if you're an unbeliever and you
- 15:07don't believe at all, unfortunately for you, God is
- 15:11still faithful that as an unbeliever, if you go into
- 15:14eternity and you have not received Him as Lord and Savior,
- 15:19what He said was going to happen is going to happen.
- 15:22The wrath of God will abide on you.
- 15:26His promise is true. His Word is true.
- 15:30So we go on and He's and we and we think about Peter because
- 15:34there are times when we all are in a situation where we deny
- 15:37Jesus Christ and there's situations where we are
- 15:41faithless. If we're honest, we're probably
- 15:45that way more than we want to be, but we understand that even
- 15:49if we deny Jesus Christ, that if we repent, we can always come
- 15:54back to him, just as he did with Peter.
- 15:57Peter denied him three times. And yet what Jesus spoke about,
- 16:03Peter came to be. Peter continued.
- 16:06He continued to be not just an apostle, but one of the leaders
- 16:11of the church because he told Peter before he even denied him,
- 16:16he said, Peter, you're going to deny me.
- 16:17You're going to deny me three times before the cock crows
- 16:21twice. You're going to deny me three
- 16:22times. But when you return, Peter,
- 16:25strengthen your brothers because there's others that are going to
- 16:28want to deny me as well. Strengthen your brothers.
- 16:33So I don't know if we've ever been in a situation where we've
- 16:36denied them. I don't know if we've been in a
- 16:38situation where we have been faithless or lack of faith.
- 16:43But I can tell you that our Savior is merciful, and He will
- 16:50allow us to turn to Him. If we confess our faithlessness,
- 16:55if we confess the fact that we denied them, we can turn to Him
- 17:00and he will give us grace to receive us back to himself.
- 17:07We don't have to die in our denial.
- 17:09We don't have to die in our faithlessness.
- 17:11If there's anyone out there that's not have not believed
- 17:14Jesus Christ for your Lord and Savior, you don't have to die
- 17:17that way. His arms are open right now and
- 17:20saying to you, come to me, come to me.
- 17:26He came to die for your sins and he's willing to receive you.
- 17:30We don't have to die in that state.
- 17:33But then we go to verse 14 and this is when he begins to speak
- 17:36to us about approved workers and unapproved workers.
- 17:41Here in verse 14. He says here, remind them of
- 17:45these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive
- 17:49about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.
- 17:55Now, first of all, he says remind and you know, you know,
- 17:58Clark, Pastor Clark and myself, every Sunday, you know, when we
- 18:01come up and we share the word of God, you know, it's not always
- 18:06new things because we go chapter by chapter, book by book, line
- 18:11by line. So we don't always share new
- 18:13things. In fact, some of you who read
- 18:15the word of God probably just as much as we do, if not more.
- 18:17For some of you, you've already read a lot of the things that
- 18:20we're already sharing, that we're sharing.
- 18:23We're not giving anything new. Just like Paul says here, remind
- 18:27them, I've already given you this.
- 18:30I've already taught this to you, Timothy.
- 18:32We've already taught this to the congregation.
- 18:35So remind them. You don't have to give them
- 18:38anything new, but we need to be reminded every now and then.
- 18:41We need to be reminded about the cross.
- 18:43Every now and then. We need to be reminded about the
- 18:45mercy of God every now and then. We need to be reminded about the
- 18:49promises that God gives us. We need to be reminded about
- 18:52suffering. We need to be reminded about
- 18:53repentance. Sometimes we need to be
- 18:56reminded, and this is what Timothy is saying.
- 18:59He says remind them of these things, charging them,
- 19:02commanding them before the Lord not to strive about words.
- 19:07Don't argue about words. Don't argue about words that
- 19:10don't have no profit. Arguing about things that have
- 19:13no eternal value. Don't argue about that.
- 19:16Those kind of things. Timothy, stay away from that.
- 19:20It doesn't do anything good. It doesn't lead to anything
- 19:22positive, but what it does is that it destroys.
- 19:25He says here that it's only that it actually ruins or that word
- 19:29is subvert or destroy the hearers.
- 19:33You discourage more people than you encourage when you argue
- 19:36about words. And before we go to verse 15, I
- 19:41want to drop down for a second and go to verse 16.
- 19:44He says, But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will
- 19:49increase, or in other words, they will lead to more
- 19:51ungodliness. So he tells us to not argue or
- 19:56not or not strive over words, and to shun or to keep away from
- 20:03profane and idle babblings. And then in the middle of that,
- 20:09he puts what used to be one of my most favorite verses, and it
- 20:12still is, but now Hebrews 1166 kind of took over.
- 20:18But this when I first got saved, this was my favorite verse.
- 20:20I, I, I read this verse every single day and it says here, be
- 20:25diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who
- 20:30does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
- 20:35truth. That was so important to me when
- 20:38I first got saved because I had such a hunger for the word, a
- 20:43hunger for the word and I had a mentor who was big on rightly
- 20:48dividing the word. So I would read that almost
- 20:51every day and I would read it in the King James Version, which
- 20:55basically says it almost says the same thing, but it changes a
- 20:59few of the words. But the bottom line here is
- 21:02this, and this is the most important part I want to give to
- 21:05you. It says present yourself,
- 21:08approve to God, not approve to man.
- 21:13Notice what that says because it's very important.
- 21:15It's not approve to man. We're not here, Pastor Clark and
- 21:19I should never be teaching to try to make themselves
- 21:23approvable to you or to any man or to any congregation.
- 21:29That's not what this is about. That's not what we're called to
- 21:32do. We're to study and make sure we
- 21:35understand the word of God, to make ourselves approved unto
- 21:39him. And that's why it's nestled in
- 21:42between those two verses. Because to argue and strive
- 21:48about words to no prophet, to the ruin of hears, that has
- 21:53nothing to do with teaching the Word of God, profane and idle
- 21:57babbling, that has nothing to do with the word of God.
- 22:01Those things are ungodly. But when we study the word of
- 22:05God and we are workmen, the Bible says we are workmen with
- 22:10the word of God. We study it just like Paul said
- 22:14a couple verses back, that one of the things we are is a
- 22:17farmer, a hard working farmer. And in doing that, we have to
- 22:22make sure that we are hard workers getting into the word of
- 22:25God, spending time with him in prayer so that we rightly
- 22:30divide. And that word rightly divide
- 22:33actually means cutting straight, cutting the word of God
- 22:36straight. We know that farmers cut furrows
- 22:39straight. A Carpenter will cut a board
- 22:42straight. We as pastors or as teachers of
- 22:46the Word are to cut the Word straight, cut it straight, give
- 22:51it straight. We don't add to it, we don't
- 22:54take away from it, we don't sugarcoat it, we don't
- 22:58breakdance around sin. We cut it straight just the way
- 23:04the Lord gives it to us. And this and this sum, when he
- 23:08says Sean, that means to keep away from profane means
- 23:13irreverent, unconsecrated and babbling just simply means empty
- 23:19chatter. He says stay away from those
- 23:21things because they don't lead to godliness.
- 23:23It leads to more ungodliness. These things only lead to
- 23:28arguments, bitter arguments, bitter debates, and no one comes
- 23:32out of it benefiting. No one benefits out of it.
- 23:36But when you teach the word of God, there should be a spirit
- 23:41that is along with it that will lead us to godliness.
- 23:46It encourages us, it corrects us if need be, it convicts us, but
- 23:53it leads us to godliness. Here on Living Waters of Grace,
- 23:59we're in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:01Pastor Lewis Harrell is walking us through these letters written
- 24:05from Paul to Timothy. Toward the end of these letters,
- 24:08Paul is anticipating that his time here on earth is coming to
- 24:12a close. He's giving some final words of
- 24:15advice to his mentee. Paul writes in Second Timothy 4,
- 24:19verse seven. I have fought the good fight.
- 24:21I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.
- 24:25Wherever you are in your journey of faith with God, our hope is
- 24:28that you have the willingness to fight for what's true.
- 24:33Not compromising, but holding fast to the Word of God.
- 24:37Paul was reminding Timothy of this, and it's a good reminder
- 24:41for you and for me today, too. For helpful input throughout
- 24:45this series, why not listen to all of these teachings from
- 24:49first and Second Timothy on our website?
