Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Aura — the Vital Envelope that Surrounds the Physical Body

- 0:02For those people who only treat as real things they can directly
- 0:06perceive with the physical sense organs, the aura is considered
- 0:10to be some kind of fantasy of imagination.
- 0:14The aura, a vital sheath or envelope that extends beyond the
- 0:18boundaries of the physical body, has therefore long been the
- 0:23province of psychics and Mystics, however.
- 0:27In recent years, science has developed methods to determine
- 0:31the existence of the aura, and this has gone a long way toward
- 0:35debunking the idea that the aura is simply an illusion.
- 0:40Curlean photography was one of the developments that showed an
- 0:44energy field around each living being.
- 0:47Various measuring devices have proven that there is an
- 0:51electromagnetic field that indeed extends beyond the
- 0:55physical body. The Aura represents an interface
- 0:59between the vital nature of the being and the vital force that
- 1:03circulates in the environment or that directly presses into the
- 1:07world from the native plains of the Vital.
- 1:11As the Seeker becomes able to experience and recognize these
- 1:15more subtle, energetic actions, he begins to experience the
- 1:20effects of the Aura, which provides yet another
- 1:23confirmation of its existence. For instance, an individual may
- 1:29feel pressure that seems to be an illness building up in the
- 1:32body. With close observation, this can
- 1:36be seen to actually start out as a pressure on the vital envelope
- 1:40surrounding the body. Action taken to strengthen the
- 1:44aura's resistance capacity at that moment can reject the
- 1:49illness and other than a few sniffles or coughs.
- 1:54Or some pressure, such as a slight headache.
- 1:57The individual does not actually get sick.
- 2:01Failure to act at this stage, or even undertaking actions which
- 2:06undermine the strength of the aura can lead to a full blown
- 2:10illness in the physical body. Illness is but one example.
- 2:17Other vital forces may try to invade and undermine the vital
- 2:21nature of the individual. Causing emotional disturbances
- 2:25or nervous breakdowns, a strong and vibrant aura can withstand
- 2:30these attacks and help the individual pass through
- 2:34difficulties and traumas relatively unscathed.
- 2:40While there are thoughts, emotions and physical pressures
- 2:43which can undermine the aura, there are also those that can
- 2:47strengthen the aura, providing thereby a strong level of
- 2:51protection. An experiment was undertaken to
- 2:55take curly and photographs of an individual's aura in a normal
- 2:59state and then, after some period of concentrated chanting
- 3:04in Pranayam. The difference in just a few
- 3:08minutes of focus, breathing and chanting was clear and obvious.
- 3:14The aura gained in brightness, intensity and depth.
- 3:20The mother writes Quote The vital body surrounds the
- 3:24physical body with a kind of envelope which is almost the
- 3:28same density as the vibrations of heat observable when the day
- 3:32is very hot. And it is this which is the
- 3:36intermediary between the subtle body and the most material vital
- 3:41body. It is this which protects the
- 3:44body from all contagion, fatigue, exhaustion.
- 3:49And even from accidents. Therefore, if this envelope is
- 3:54wholly intact, it protects you from everything but a little too
- 3:59strong. An emotion, a little fatigue,
- 4:02some dissatisfaction, or any shock whatsoever is sufficient
- 4:08to scratch it, as it were, and the slightest scratch allows any
- 4:12kind of intrusion. Medical science also now
- 4:16recognizes that if you are in perfect vital equilibrium, you
- 4:21do not catch illness or in any case you have a kind of immunity
- 4:25from contagion. If you have this equilibrium,
- 4:29this inner harmony which keeps the envelope intact, it protects
- 4:35you from everything. There are people who lead quite
- 4:38an ordinary life, who know how to sleep as one should, eat as
- 4:43one should. And their nervous envelope is so
- 4:46intact that they pass through all dangers as though
- 4:50unconcerned. It is a capacity one can
- 4:54cultivate in oneself. If one becomes aware of the weak
- 4:58spot in one's envelope, A few minutes concentration, a call to
- 5:03the Force and inner peace, is sufficient for it to be all
- 5:08right, get cured, and for the untoward thing to vanish.
