- 0:04Hey guys, today is Friday, August 14th.
- 0:09Making Things Right. The Stone: Peace
- 0:13comes not from what others do for me, but from doing what is
- 0:16mine to do before God. Ripple One Practical: Today
- 0:20I'll focus on my own responsibilities rather than someone else's.
- 0:24I cannot control whether others acknowledge their mistakes.
- 0:28But I can take ownership of my own actions.
- 0:32Freedom grows when I stop keeping score and start making
- 0:35things right where I can. The ripple to spiritual:
- 0:40as I take responsibility for my part without demanding repayment
- 0:44from others, the Holy Spirit gives me willingness to
- 0:48repair the damage I have caused and lay the result in God's
- 0:52hands. The Father calls me in faithfulness, not fairness.
- 0:55And Jesus teaches me what that looks like.
- 1:01And man, yeah, I was thinking about this first
- 1:04part. It says, peace comes not from what others do for me, but from what
- 1:07is mine to do before God. And we were
- 1:11talking about this on the last episode, right? Because if everything's God,
- 1:16and not just the specifics, and I think it's
- 1:20funny listening to some people and on both sides of the fence
- 1:24of whatever they believe in.
- 1:29And I start asking questions about, well, what do you think about God
- 1:33and this? And I like to push some things to the side.
- 1:37Some of these things I'm really passionate about and I forget them.
- 1:41But I think the real true thing in this is on page 124 in the
- 1:44big book, it says, we grow, and here's your word, Paris,
- 1:49We grow by our willingness to face and rectify errors and
- 1:53convert them into assets. The alcoholic's past thus becomes
- 1:58the principal asset of the family and frequently is almost the only one.
- 2:02So like me rectifying errors,
- 2:05and I look at this in a lot of different ways. Number one,
- 2:09am I being a demonstration of God and what God
- 2:13can do in my life? Number 2, I happen
- 2:17to be in this program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Can I be a demonstration for Alcoholics
- 2:21Anonymous? And maybe from someone,
- 2:24someone sees what I have and what they might want, or am I not?
- 2:28Am I the dude with the circle and the triangle going 95
- 2:32miles an hour down the interstate cutting people off and being a demonstration for
- 2:36Alcoholics Anonymous that way? That's why I think it's best to keep
- 2:40some of those things private. Um,
- 2:44but in the Bible— oh, we're just jumping around some literature now.
- 2:48Go for it. In Colossians 3:23,
- 2:53whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working
- 2:57for the Lord, not for men, since you know that
- 3:01you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the
- 3:05Lord Christ you are serving, Anyone who does
- 3:09wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism.
- 3:13Man, I didn't like that last part, right? There is no favoritism.
- 3:17Man, I thought I was his favorite. So when
- 3:21I come into that, right? I was thinking about that one day. I was working
- 3:25and I was like, man, I'm not working for this company,
- 3:30right? I'm working for God. I'm not working for an individual.
- 3:34I come into conflict with that.
- 3:37Like, oh, I don't like my boss. Well, My boss is a child
- 3:41of God as well. Yeah, we're all children of God. And, you know,
- 3:44I think we talked a little bit about this before, but, you know, once I
- 3:47come into more and more of that, you know, I start looking at life a
- 3:50lot different. Would God, you know, would God want me talking
- 3:54bad about him behind his back? Would, you know, any of these little things.
- 3:58And, you know, we've, you know, that where it talks about,
- 4:01you know, the 5th step, right? Searching out a closed-mouth friend.
- 4:05Yeah. Right. So, and we talked about this one day, I was like,
- 4:09you think, well, like, you know, because I think that closed-mouth friend thing is funny,
- 4:12right? Because like, I didn't come
- 4:16into this program being a closed-mouth friend by any
- 4:20means. I don't care how like hood
- 4:24I was hanging out with some dudes and like what principles they were living by.
- 4:28I was not a closed-mouth friend. You get me around the right things with the
- 4:32right concoction, my mouth is open wide. Telling everybody's business.
- 4:35Yeah. And I'm excited about it too, because I think it's great.
- 4:39So I come into here and then I think
- 4:44that I'm going to be a closed-mouth friend. No, God has shaped me in
- 4:48a way and put me in some positions and taken,
- 4:51just torn away the ego, right?
- 4:55From facing these things and rectifying my past.
- 4:58That's where the ego's gone. Because when I looked the girl in the face and
- 5:01I said, hey man, I did this and this and this to you.
- 5:06What can I do to make that right? And those things that she didn't know,
- 5:10you see that face, you don't ever like, you know,
- 5:13that's a face that, you know, takes your soul. And it's not something that's
- 5:17like, you know, when you wake up the next day and you shoot, they're going
- 5:20through your text messages and finding that you were talking to someone. It's a completely
- 5:24different thing because now I'm so clear-minded and I can
- 5:28feel this and I feel this with God. And now I'm open to these feelings
- 5:31and now I And I believe through
- 5:35this work, you know, rectifying my past,
- 5:40maybe I'm not going to hurt anybody again like I hurt them that way.
- 5:44Yeah. Anyway, you know, I was looking at the
- 5:49practical part on this, you know, and what it says today, I will focus on
- 5:52my own responsibilities rather than someone else's.
- 5:56You know, how fast is it that I can take
- 6:00someone else's inventory and tell them, oh, what they're doing wrong
- 6:04or how they need to fix this. You know
- 6:08what I mean? But that's the part of cleaning up my own side of the
- 6:12street. You know, back, I used to have a, it was an older gentleman that
- 6:15used to walk my old neighborhood as growing up. And he used
- 6:19to just walk the neighborhood and pick up things in the middle,
- 6:22just on the side of the road. And I was like, man,
- 6:25why does he do this every day? That's just a part of cleaning
- 6:30up his neighborhood, right? Helping someone else. And that
- 6:34kind of brings it back to what we doing today, to just be assisting and
- 6:37help someone see their side and to clean their own mess up.
- 6:41You know what I mean? And then I was looking at,
- 6:45I went to the daily reflections on this and I was looking at it
- 6:49and it said, we attempt to sweep away the debris. Which has
- 6:53accumulated out of our effort to live on self-will
- 6:57and run to show ourselves. See,
- 7:00when I focus on my own self all the
- 7:03time, you know, I get in a bothered situation.
- 7:07I know Corey don't like me saying stinky thinking. And I get in
- 7:11this situation to where I have to, you know, get out. And how
- 7:15do I get out of there? I have to rely and depend upon God.
- 7:19'Cause at the end of the day, this is faith and recovery work we're
- 7:22doing. And that's what's so great about this, to be able to just
- 7:28pause and get in my head and say,
- 7:32Lord, let thy will be done, not mine. So I can instantly
- 7:36deter it off of me and give it up again
- 7:40with surrendering. That's the first thing that came to mind
- 7:44on me on that. Yeah, but I love how it says, but I
- 7:48can take ownership of my own actions. Because step 8
- 7:51is into action. That's when we have to really
- 7:55do the work. It's not into action just because,
- 7:59you know, action is a— what is
- 8:02it? It's a verb, right? Is it a verb? Action is a verb.
- 8:06Yeah, I heard it. A verb is an action. Yeah,
- 8:09by definition. Exactly. Well, vice versa.
- 8:13I barely went to school, but I really didn't learn too much. But no,
- 8:16anyway, um, but this is the part that we really have to put
- 8:20action into. And, um, to make those amends, yes, it's going to be difficult.
- 8:24You know, I don't— I didn't try making amends that,
- 8:28you know, the other, the other party didn't want nothing to do
- 8:32with, right? And that's still— but I have done my part,
- 8:35you know. I have reached out, you know. Now it's
- 8:39up to— now I got to put it in God for him to, you know,
- 8:41level that out, you know. I think that said that right. Yeah. What you
- 8:45got, Pastor? Well, I was thinking about how,
- 8:50like, our, our eyesight, what we can see,
- 8:54you know. And I remember
- 8:57when I first needed— when I first realized I needed glasses was
- 9:02as a result of having a conversation with somebody, and they
- 9:06pointed out, hey, you may need glasses, right? Because I was in college
- 9:10and I had been for a while,
- 9:13I would pick the seats toward the front of the room so that I could
- 9:17see the writing on the whiteboard better. And I was having headaches
- 9:21when I was driving at night with the lights and things and having a conversation
- 9:25with, at the time it was my mother, and she pointed out, she said,
- 9:27well, it sounds like you might need glasses, like you might be a little bit
- 9:31nearsighted. And so I had to get my vision checked. And of course I did
- 9:35need the glasses and I'm I've had to use them ever since.
- 9:38And I also think about eyesight in terms of people who have like a— because
- 9:41I have this as well— an astigmatism, which is kind of like,
- 9:45the best I can understand it, and I'm not an optometrist, of course, but is
- 9:49almost kind of like a dark spot or a spot in one eye where
- 9:53you can't really see around it, you know, things like that anyway, or it's the
- 9:56shape of the lens, something like that. But I think about how, you know,
- 9:59as these things develop slowly over the course of a lifetime
- 10:03that form our eyesight, And we don't realize what we can't see.
- 10:06And that's exactly the same type of thing that,
- 10:10you know, Jesus was talking about in his Sermon on the Mount
- 10:14in, uh, Matthew 7:3. You know, when he said, why do you look at
- 10:18the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank
- 10:22in your own eye? Exactly. It's because I've been living with this plank,
- 10:25Jesus, for all my life, and I'm used to looking around my
- 10:29own plank because I know I I may not even remember that it's
- 10:32there until I see a mirror or have a mirror held up to me,
- 10:36but I can see across the room to you. And so I can
- 10:39see the speck that you have more because, like I said, I got glasses now
- 10:43too, so I can see it even better. But it's just
- 10:46that reminder for me of,
- 10:50as it says, how could I say to somebody else, let me take the speck
- 10:53out of your eye, when all the time there's a plank in my own?
- 10:56Because I don't want to be that type of hypocrite, you know, that Jesus was
- 10:59talking about in there. And that's why I
- 11:04can only— and I've learned through the recovery program as well— that all
- 11:09I'm in control of are my own actions. Yeah. Like, I can't control your actions.
- 11:14And I know that because of my alcoholism,
- 11:17if I try to control your actions and I come to you with expectations and
- 11:20you don't meet my expectations, that's going to turn into a resentment.
- 11:23That resentment eventually, if it's left un— mitigated
- 11:27over time. You get frustrated. Yeah, I could be frustrated,
- 11:31irritable, discontent. Over time, that could lead me to a relapse
- 11:35or a drink because I've seen that happen to so many of our brothers and
- 11:38sisters in the program. But so I have to
- 11:42keep working on the plank that's in my eye. And to take that
- 11:45plank out of my eye is what my job is. When I'm going about
- 11:49the 8th and 9th step, I'm trying to get that plank pulled out of my
- 11:52eye. I'm not trying to do that so that I can see the speck in
- 11:56your eye, and I can't come with expectations because that's just premeditated
- 12:02relapse, as they call it, in the program. And to you,
- 12:06Paris, I would say anytime that you want to get
- 12:09out of your stinking thinking, that maybe you should just think, think,
- 12:13think, or maybe you should keep first things first.
- 12:18Maybe you should take an attitude of easy does it. Did I
- 12:22get enough of the wall icons at you, Corey, for you to get agitated over
- 12:27there? You see what I did? Yeah. See,
- 12:30I might not know the way this works because
- 12:34I don't have as much time as Pastor Mike.
- 12:37But see, my thinking though, as time passes,
- 12:42right, because more and more on the plane is gone. I come
- 12:46to rely upon that, my thinking. And I have
- 12:52a— I think it's not in this book because
- 12:56on page 80— yeah, it's in this book
- 13:00on page 87. It says, nevertheless, we find that our thinking will, as time passes,
- 13:04be more and more on the plane of inspiration. We come to rely upon it.
- 13:08And right beside, I have it written in, rely only on divine.
- 13:13I rely on God. Not because I
- 13:17don't call someone because I got some stinking thinking and I need someone to make
- 13:20decisions for me. I rely on God. And I do rely on my thinking
- 13:24today because how else am I going to get through life? And I
- 13:27can call people all I want, but at the end of the day, I'm going
- 13:31to make the decision. I can listen to people and there are I've
- 13:34got moments and all sorts of things when I talk to people. I call my
- 13:38sponsor frequently. But, you know, I do rely upon God and
- 13:42that thinking today. Um, you know, I'll— you know,
- 13:46I was thinking about on page 61,
- 13:49you know, it says he may be kind. And, you know, let's talk about me.
- 13:52It says Corey may be kind, considerate, patient,
- 13:57generous, even modest, self-sacrificing. On the other
- 14:00hand, Corey may be mean, egotistical, selfish,
- 14:04and dishonest. But as with most humans,
- 14:07Corey is likely to have varied traits. What usually happens,
- 14:11Perry, is the show doesn't come off very well. Corey begins to think life
- 14:16doesn't treat him right. Corey decides to exert himself more. I try even harder
- 14:20at being really nice or really like, you know, being a passive-aggressive,
- 14:25you know, butthead. Butthead. Yeah. Thank you.
- 14:28Uh, since all of us have— we've done this long enough, I, I know when
- 14:31you're on the cusp of the curse. Yeah. But, you know, then I
- 14:36push further, right? And it goes on to say, you know, he becomes
- 14:40on the next occasion still more demanding or gracious,
- 14:44as the case may be, still that a play does not suit
- 14:47Corey, admitting Corey may be somewhat at fault, just a
- 14:51little bit. Corey's a little bit— that's what it says,
- 14:54somewhat at fault. Corey is sure
- 14:58that other people are more to blame. The house always wins.
- 15:01Yeah. Right? That is why those words in there,
- 15:05like resolutely, are in there, right? With determination,
- 15:09I have to look and see exactly what I did because,
- 15:13you know, and what a demonstration of God is,
- 15:17you know, if when me and you get into an argument about something,
- 15:20right? Which happens, you know, sometimes. Yeah. And say
- 15:25you might have been in the wrong, Right? Yeah. But,
- 15:29and I've said, you know, one little piece in there— this happens at my household—
- 15:33maybe I said one thing in the middle of this thing, uh, you know,
- 15:37in the first— but I'm the first one to make amends about that one
- 15:41little thing. Maybe I didn't bring it on that time, right?
- 15:44But that's a demonstration. And that, you know, I'll tell you what happens,
- 15:48both people's perspectives change at once in that.
- 15:51Because like, when you're not even, you know, the primary
- 15:55offender, primary grenade thrower. Yeah, I like
- 15:58that better than offender.
- 16:01But you can say, hey, I'm sorry
- 16:05for tripping you, whatever the example is.
- 16:08I'm sorry for that. And come clean about it all.
- 16:13Once you insert love into anything,
- 16:17it takes away the anger, the fear, the resentment,
- 16:21all that stuff. But the love has to be inserted,
- 16:25and it's our jobs to insert the love. Love. The Bible tells
- 16:29us we love because God first loved us. And the big
- 16:32book, which is not our Bible, but it's a big book, which is great for
- 16:35us, is on page 55. It says, we finally saw that faith
- 16:39in some kind of God was a part of our makeup, just as much as
- 16:42the feeling we have for a friend. Sometimes we had to search fearlessly,
- 16:46but he was there. He was as much a fact as we were.
- 16:49We found the great reality deep down within us. In the
- 16:53last analysis, it is only there that he may be found. And it was so
- 16:57with us. Yeah. I mean, I got one more. Yeah,
- 17:01he quoting over there, ain't he? Yeah. I mean, one more thing, you know.
- 17:04He got me thinking about it when he was talking about how today he sees
- 17:07that, you know, he sees God everywhere and he's growing his faith and understanding in
- 17:11God. And I mean, that comes— that's basically— I mean,
- 17:15that's like a little promise in that chapter. There's a lot of promises in it.
- 17:18Yeah. That I learned or that I read, you know, and it's on
- 17:22the spiritual where it says, the Holy Spirit gives me the willing to repair damage
- 17:25I have caused and leave the results in God's
- 17:30hands, right? You know, see, we have to remind ourselves that we
- 17:34wanted to go to any lengths to get this, you know, and it says that
- 17:37on page 79. When we do find ourselves in
- 17:40trouble, oh, do I want to make these amends? It says, we ask
- 17:45that we be given the strength and direction to do the right thing,
- 17:48No matter what the personal consequences may be. Yeah.
- 17:51You know, sometimes those are tough. Exactly. You know,
- 17:55but that's what it's about, giving it up in God's hands, surrendering. It don't matter
- 17:59the consequences. That's right. Well, that's all I got. Man, to be able
- 18:03to do that though, we gotta have and we gotta grow in willingness.
- 18:07Yes, sir. And that's on Paris.
- 18:10Father God, help me focus on what is mine to do today.
- 18:14Through Your Holy Spirit, give me the willingness to make
- 18:18things right and the humility to leave the outcome with You. Shape my
- 18:22life through the example of Jesus and lead me into peace.
