- 0:00Well, thank you very much, Dr. Mohler,
- 0:02for those kind words, a very gracious
- 0:04introduction. It is an extraordinary
- 0:06honor to be here. I'm humbled to be
- 0:09here. I'm humbled to be here in this
- 0:11office, but I'm also full of great
- 0:14gratitude for what I see here, a room
- 0:16full of next generation leaders, a
- 0:19seminary, an institution that is
- 0:20faithful to the mission of God and to
- 0:23the truth of God. And I find my heart
- 0:26just being overwhelmed with gratitude as
- 0:28I have been here over the last several
- 0:29hours. Um I am uh only a few years
- 0:33younger than your president, which means
- 0:35simply I have watched his leadership and
- 0:38ministry most of my ministry as a local
- 0:41church pastor. I was a young pastor when
- 0:44he became the president of this seminary
- 0:47and I watched from afar and prayed and
- 0:50uh admired him. But I have watched this
- 0:52institution reclaimed for theological
- 0:55health. I have watched God's blessing
- 0:57upon it. And uh as we have both, I
- 1:01suppose, aged together in different
- 1:03places and walked our path of ministry
- 1:05these decades, him now more than three
- 1:07decades. As the leader of this
- 1:09institution, I find myself praising God
- 1:12for what is happening here and for the
- 1:15future of this institution. This is the
- 1:18mother seminary of the Southern Baptist
- 1:20Convention. the Southern Baptist
- 1:21Theological Seminary. It is unimaginable
- 1:24to think about the Southern Baptist
- 1:26Convention without thinking about this
- 1:28seminary and to think about its
- 1:31faithfulness again to the truth and to
- 1:33the mission of God. Well, I'm deeply
- 1:35grateful and I'm grateful for you here
- 1:36representing the next generation of
- 1:38leaders who will go into all walks of
- 1:40life to serve the Lord and to advance
- 1:43his kingdom. And uh I invite you to take
- 1:46your Bible and turn with me to the Old
- 1:48Testament today to the book of First
- 1:49Kings to a story from Jewish history,
- 1:53the kings of Israel. And we learn from
- 1:56them uh so many lessons of course. Um
- 1:59and I invite your attention to First
- 2:01Kings 14. I want to read verse 21 in a
- 2:04moment down through verse 28. As you're
- 2:06turning there, I'm thinking of a a sign
- 2:10I once saw. I was traveling. I think it
- 2:12was in Turkey or Greece, right in there
- 2:15around the Mediterranean. Uh, one of
- 2:17those tours that sometimes pastors do.
- 2:19And we came to an area that was
- 2:20something like a tourist area slashflea
- 2:24market. They had like boos and little
- 2:27tables set up where they were selling
- 2:28hats and shirts and all the kinds of
- 2:30things to American tourists. And there
- 2:32was a sign nailed to a tree. A sign
- 2:35nailed to a tree that I loved. It caught
- 2:37my attention. And the sign read this
- 2:41genuine
- 2:42fake watches.
- 2:45That was the sign which I loved. I
- 2:49laughed for 15 minutes. Genuine fake
- 2:51watches.
- 2:53Because if you're going to buy a fake
- 2:54watch, you want to know it's a genuine
- 2:57fake watch. You don't There's nothing
- 3:00worse than buying a fake watch only to
- 3:02find that it was not genuine. It was a
- 3:05fake fake watch. I don't know if they
- 3:07had a certain committee that inspected
- 3:09the fake watches to make sure they were
- 3:10genuine. Part of the ambiance maybe of
- 3:13visiting some city like New York and
- 3:15when you buy a watch out of a person's
- 3:18duffel bag
- 3:20is, you know, you pay $50 for a Rolex.
- 3:23It's a lot of fun. You give it to a
- 3:25present or you wear it maybe and um you
- 3:28want to know it's a genuine fake watch
- 3:30though. that it's a genuine fake Rolex
- 3:33and it'll last for five or six weeks
- 3:34until it loses time or turns your skin a
- 3:37certain color and you throw it away. But
- 3:40I thought of the irony of those words,
- 3:43the inconsistency of those words, the
- 3:45nonsensical nature of those words. I
- 3:48thought there are a lot of genuine fakes
- 3:51in life. There are a lot of genuine
- 3:53fakes in the kingdom of God. One an
- 3:56alterable spiritual truth is this.
- 3:58Wherever God is working, the devil is
- 4:02also working. And you know that the
- 4:04devil creates nothing. Our spiritual foe
- 4:06has no power to create out of nothing.
- 4:08God is the creator. But Satan is the
- 4:11great imitator. He's the great
- 4:13counterfeitter. He takes what God has
- 4:15made and shaped and caused and he
- 4:18creates deception often by means of
- 4:20imitation. Wherever God is working, the
- 4:23devil is working. If God is working in a
- 4:25church, the devil is working as well. of
- 4:27God is working in your life, the devil
- 4:29is also hard at work. When God is
- 4:31working in a movement, the devil is also
- 4:33working to counterfeit, to imitate that
- 4:35movement. In Acts 8, when Peter and John
- 4:38demonstrated the great power of the Holy
- 4:40Spirit in Samaria, there was Simon the
- 4:42magician lurking in the shadows, wanting
- 4:44to buy with silver that power which he
- 4:47saw displayed in the apostles lives.
- 4:50There is God working, and there is
- 4:52lurking in the shadows also the work of
- 4:54the devil. As you begin a new semester,
- 4:58in reality, the very reason you're at
- 5:00this institution is you are beginning a
- 5:02new chapter in your life. You are
- 5:04pursuing the vocation for which God has
- 5:06called you, stepping into a new and
- 5:09important season in your life. You are
- 5:11by very nature of this place in a season
- 5:15of preparation. The question I want you
- 5:18to consider is this. Will you settle for
- 5:21something that is a genuine fake? Or
- 5:25will you pursue with all of your heart
- 5:27that which is authentic and real and
- 5:30genuine? There's a story from the kings
- 5:32of the Old Testament. A story from
- 5:34Riaboam, the fourth of Judah's kings,
- 5:36the son of Solomon that I call your
- 5:39attention to this morning. First Kings
- 5:4214. And I want to read from verse 21
- 5:44down through the 28th verse. This is the
- 5:48word of the Lord. Now, Riaboam,
- 5:51Solomon's son, reigned in Judah. Riaboam
- 5:55was 41 years old when he became king. He
- 5:58reigned 17 years in Jerusalem, the city
- 6:02where the Lord had chosen from all the
- 6:05tribes of Israel to put his name.
- 6:07Riaboam's mother's name was Neymar the
- 6:10Ammonite. Judah did what was evil in the
- 6:14Lord's sight. They provoked him to
- 6:16jealous anger more than all their
- 6:19ancestors had done with the sins they
- 6:21committed. They also built for
- 6:22themselves high places, sacred pillars,
- 6:25and a sheer upoles on every high hill
- 6:27and under every green tree. There were
- 6:29even male cult prostitutes in the land.
- 6:32They imitated all the detestable
- 6:35practices of the nations the Lord had
- 6:37dispossessed before the Israelites. In
- 6:39the fifth year of King Riaboam, King
- 6:42Shishak of Egypt went to war against
- 6:44Jerusalem. He seized the treasuries of
- 6:47the Lord's temple and the treasuries of
- 6:49the royal palace. He took everything. He
- 6:52took all the gold shields that Solomon
- 6:55had made. King Riaboam made bronze
- 6:58shields to replace them and committed
- 7:01them into the care of the captains of
- 7:03the guards who protected the entrance to
- 7:05the king's palace. And whenever the king
- 7:08entered the Lord's temple, the guards
- 7:10would carry the shields. Then they would
- 7:12take them back to the armory.
- 7:16Living God, I pray today as we consider
- 7:19this ancient story and we search for the
- 7:22spiritual truth that we might apply to
- 7:25our lives that you would give us a
- 7:27hunger for that which is real and
- 7:29authentic,
- 7:31not a cheap substitute,
- 7:34not a genuine fake.
- 7:38deliver us from that which has affected
- 7:40so many in religious communities in the
- 7:42past and even in our own Christian
- 7:44circles of going through the motions
- 7:47with a superficial spirituality designed
- 7:50to impress others even while we
- 7:55deceive ourselves
- 7:58and pretend that something is there that
- 8:00is not. Give us we pray your power, your
- 8:04blessing and your favor in Jesus name.
- 8:08Amen.
- 8:11The kings of Israel are important to
- 8:13study. There are six books in the Bible
- 8:15devoted to their history and they
- 8:17provide lessons of success and failure.
- 8:20They provide instruction for us and how
- 8:22we might obey God. And they give insight
- 8:25into spiritual truths that guide us
- 8:28still. They are given as all scripture
- 8:30is for our instruction, our correction,
- 8:32our reproof, our training. Behind every
- 8:34crown, there is a character. Behind
- 8:36every throne, there is a testimony.
- 8:38Behind every sovereign, there is story.
- 8:41Each king is a story. And history is not
- 8:44just his story. In many ways, it's our
- 8:46story as well. We learn about wise
- 8:49choices. We learn about foolish ones,
- 8:52about pride and humility, lessons of
- 8:54leadership and lessons of failure. We
- 8:57learn from those who trust in God and
- 8:59those who forget God and the
- 9:02consequences that comes from that. I
- 9:04remind you that the decisions we make
- 9:08determine the destiny that we will have.
- 9:11And there was a king named Riaboam whose
- 9:14example serves as a lesson to all of
- 9:17those who are entering the next chapter
- 9:19of their life. All of those who are
- 9:21aspiring to leadership and influence.
- 9:24And again, as we consider a new
- 9:26semester, as we consider a new chapter
- 9:28in your life, we think about Riaboam in
- 9:30a time of transition in the nation of
- 9:32Judah. You know, of course, that Riaboam
- 9:34is the fourth king. He is the grandson
- 9:36of David, the son of Solomon. There is
- 9:39Saul, David, Solomon, and then the baton
- 9:43is passed to Riaboam. The interesting
- 9:45thing about transitions is they are a
- 9:47time of great opportunity. Often they
- 9:50are accompanied with great excitement.
- 9:52They're also a time of great
- 9:54vulnerability. So as you transition into
- 9:57new chapters in your life, there is both
- 9:59opportunity and vulnerability. And as
- 10:02you are preparing to receive the mantels
- 10:04of leadership that you will receive in
- 10:06the variety of fields that you will
- 10:08pursue, you must now determine the
- 10:11choices that will determine the
- 10:14trajectory of your life and ministry.
- 10:17Riaboam's story of course is well known
- 10:19to the people in the seminary some
- 10:21thousand years or so before the time of
- 10:23Christ. The Jewish people flourished in
- 10:25the land we know as Israel. It was a
- 10:27land that had been promised to their
- 10:29ancestors. And now in the fullness of
- 10:31time under Solomon, they had begun to
- 10:33prosper in ways that their ancestors
- 10:37could only have dreamed of. Solomon's
- 10:39time was marked by incredible splendor,
- 10:42incredible wealth, incredible power, by
- 10:44peace. He is said to have been among the
- 10:46wisest men who ever lived and estimates
- 10:48of his wealth place him among the
- 10:50wealthiest men who have ever walked
- 10:52among the planet. First Kings 10 tells
- 10:55the story about the queen of Sheba, an
- 10:57ancient kingdom, perhaps southern Arabia
- 11:00or modern-day Ethiopia. She visited
- 11:03Solomon. She came to engage in trade,
- 11:05but not just trade but to take a full
- 11:08measure of the great man herself. She
- 11:11had questions about science, philosophy,
- 11:14and so forth. And the Bible records that
- 11:17Solomon answered them all. So much so
- 11:19that she was amazed. The Bible describes
- 11:22a kingdom where kings and merchants and
- 11:25governors from all over the Arabian
- 11:27world would come and trade. 25 tons of
- 11:31gold flowed into the kingdom every year.
- 11:34so much gold that according to first
- 11:36kings chapter 10 and verse 17, Solomon
- 11:40made 200 large shields of gold. Each of
- 11:45them contained 15 pounds of gold.
- 11:48Someone can run the math on that. There
- 11:51were 300 smaller shields of gold with
- 11:54four pounds of gold in each of those.
- 11:57Now, a shield of gold is not designed
- 12:00for battle. It's designed for beauty to
- 12:03demonstrate wealth and opulence and
- 12:06power. It's a symbol. It's a sign. And
- 12:09of course, whenever Solomon would bring
- 12:11them out, perhaps on days of great pomp
- 12:14and circumstance, it would demonstrate
- 12:16the blessing and the favor of God that
- 12:18had fallen upon the land. But upon
- 12:21Solomon's death, as you know, things
- 12:24began to change. Even before his death,
- 12:27tribalism and rivalry had begun to
- 12:30affect the land. Solomon himself had
- 12:32drifted spiritually and morally, and one
- 12:35of his servants, Jeroboam, had fled to
- 12:38Egypt, waiting for a time when he might
- 12:40usurp the monarchy and perhaps establish
- 12:43his own kingdom. Somewhere around 900
- 12:46years before the time of Christ, Solomon
- 12:48dies and his son Riaboam becomes the
- 12:52next king. Many of you are familiar with
- 12:54the controversy that ensued. Leadership
- 12:57is about choices. And the higher the
- 13:00leadership, the harder the choices.
- 13:03Riaboam faced a leadership choice almost
- 13:06immediately, one that would define his
- 13:09reign. And tragically so. When Riaboam
- 13:13became king, there was a controversy.
- 13:15And the controversy was over taxes.
- 13:19Nothing much has changed. The people
- 13:22wanted a break. Solomon had pursued
- 13:25great projects of building and expansion
- 13:27and it had come at a cost. And
- 13:29apparently by the time Solomon's reign
- 13:32transitions to Riaboam, there was some
- 13:34economic hardship. So much so that the
- 13:36people saw this transition in leadership
- 13:39as an opportunity to appeal for relief.
- 13:42They came to Riaboam and asked for a tax
- 13:45cut.
- 13:47The Riaboam had to make a choice. To
- 13:49give the people relief from the burden
- 13:51and the conscripted labor or just to
- 13:54pursue full steam ahead the policies
- 13:57that were in place. So leadership is
- 14:00about choices and to make good choices
- 14:04usually need to bring in counselors. So
- 14:05Rioam brought in two sets of counselors.
- 14:08Many of you remember the story. The
- 14:10first set of counselors were those who
- 14:11were older. They were the counselors who
- 14:14had advised his father. They were the
- 14:16men who had been helping to steer the
- 14:18government for some number of years. The
- 14:21older men were familiar with the
- 14:23machines of government and they advised
- 14:26Riaboam
- 14:28to listen to the people. They advised
- 14:30him to speak kindly to them. In fact, in
- 14:34chapter 12 and verse 7, it says
- 14:36specifically,
- 14:38be a servant to the people. If you serve
- 14:42them, they advised,
- 14:44they will serve you. Riaboam thought
- 14:47about it and brought in a second group
- 14:49of counselors. Now, the second group of
- 14:51counselors,
- 14:52these were his boys. These were the guys
- 14:55he was in fraternity with. These were
- 14:57the guys he played football with. They
- 14:59were ambitious young men. And they must
- 15:01have seen the transition in power as an
- 15:04opportunity to pursue their own
- 15:05ambition. This was an opportunity for
- 15:07them to make their mark as well. And
- 15:09their advice was exactly the opposite of
- 15:11the older counselors. They advised
- 15:14Riaboam to come across as large and in
- 15:18charge. They advised him to boast that
- 15:20he was tougher than his father ever was.
- 15:23That if they thought his father was
- 15:25tough, they had not seen anything yet.
- 15:28They were to learn his discipline would
- 15:30be harsher still. Riaboam, as you know,
- 15:34listened to the council of his
- 15:35colleagues, the younger men. announced
- 15:38in chapter 12 12 and verse1 14. My
- 15:40father made your yoke heavy. I will add
- 15:43to your yoke. My father disciplined you
- 15:46with whips. I will discipline you with
- 15:48barbed whips. The next verse says
- 15:51ominously, the king did not listen
- 15:56to the people. The consequences were
- 15:59disastrous. Once the king's decision
- 16:01became known, the 10 tribes to the north
- 16:04rebelled. Jeroboam who had worked for
- 16:06Solomon before. He had fled to Egypt,
- 16:08led the rebellion of the northern
- 16:10tribes. Riaboam tried to quell the
- 16:13rebellion, but it was unsuccessful. In
- 16:15fact, he barely escaped assassination
- 16:18with his own life. And thus, somewhere
- 16:20around 930 or so BC, the kingdom of
- 16:24Israel, the United Tribes, split into
- 16:27the northern tribes of Israel and the
- 16:29southern kingdom of Judah. And it is at
- 16:31this moment that a dream dies. The dream
- 16:35of a united, blessed and righteous
- 16:38people who would serve as a prophetic
- 16:41witness to the nations dies. Now this
- 16:44doesn't surprise God and his plan is
- 16:46sovereign. But there is a sense in which
- 16:48the dream, the aspiration that Abraham
- 16:51and Moses and David had had and so many
- 16:54had worked for would come to an end. The
- 16:56Jewish people would be divided. The
- 16:58desult the results were disastrous. The
- 17:01northern kingdom built their own altars
- 17:03of worship, forever sealing their
- 17:05rebellion against the house of David in
- 17:07the Jewish temple. Not one of their
- 17:09kings, as you know, will ever be
- 17:11praised. The northern kingdom will last
- 17:13oh about 200 years. But like a deer that
- 17:16has been shot and runs for a while, its
- 17:19fate was sealed. and they will fall to
- 17:23Assyria and the 10 tribes will disappear
- 17:26into a fog of history. The southern
- 17:29kingdom remain loyal to the Davidic
- 17:31dynasty. They will worship in Jerusalem
- 17:33but they will never again be a united
- 17:36kingdom. And yet in some ways
- 17:39that tragedy
- 17:41enormous
- 17:42can be traced back to one fatal
- 17:45decision. In some sense it's never one
- 17:47decision. But sometimes there are
- 17:49decisions so significant and so critical
- 17:52that the ramifications of them last for
- 17:55centuries.
- 17:57And I want to remind you that you never
- 17:59know what day you're going to make a
- 18:02decision that may affect the decades of
- 18:05your life. Your children and children
- 18:08that are unborn.
- 18:11Riaboam will reign for 17 years, but the
- 18:15kingdom never regains its lost power. In
- 18:18time, they are invaded by the Egyptians.
- 18:20They have to pay heavy tolls to get the
- 18:22Egyptians to leave. The Egyptians will
- 18:24take the massive gold shields that
- 18:28Solomon had made. To replace them, Riabo
- 18:32makes bronze shields, an inferior
- 18:36substitute, probably to carry on the
- 18:39impression of greatness and grandeur.
- 18:41Bronze can be shined to look as
- 18:43brilliant as gold. And most people are
- 18:45probably fooled.
- 18:48Most people don't notice the difference
- 18:50when it glitters in the sun.
- 18:54But bronze isn't gold.
- 18:57The gold was gone. And despite the
- 19:00counterfeit grandeur of Riaboam,
- 19:03he had traded gold for bronze and the
- 19:06dream of David for something weak and
- 19:08inferior.
- 19:10And so I just stand before you at the
- 19:12cusp of new chapters
- 19:15to beg you not to settle for the genuine
- 19:18fake,
- 19:20not to be content in your life or your
- 19:22ministry or your vocation or your work
- 19:25or your family. to trot out shields of
- 19:28bronze that may impress the crowds
- 19:31but that are far inferior to what God
- 19:35would have for you. Lessons that can be
- 19:38learned from Riaboam. I'd like to share
- 19:40a couple quickly. One, when you are
- 19:43faced with great choices, and I think I
- 19:46said it a moment ago, leadership is
- 19:48about choices. The higher the
- 19:50leadership, you heard me say it, the
- 19:53harder the choices.
- 19:55Choose wisely. Number one, choose
- 19:58wisdom. Choose wisdom. Wisdom is knowing
- 20:01the right thing to do. Solomon,
- 20:04Riaboam's father, had compiled an
- 20:06extensive book known as the book of
- 20:09proverbs of pathy observational
- 20:11realities about people, relationships,
- 20:13choices, and God. He put this book
- 20:15together and he actually tells us the
- 20:18purpose to pass along wisdom
- 20:21for his son. Repeatedly he addresses the
- 20:24proverbs to his son. The first verses of
- 20:27the book, verse 8, listen my son to your
- 20:30father's instruction. Do not neglect or
- 20:33reject your mother's teaching. 45 times
- 20:36in the book of Proverbs, he refers to my
- 20:39son, my son. Now in a general sense, I
- 20:41am sure that Solomon is addressing
- 20:43future generations of leaders like the
- 20:45people in this room and he's speaking my
- 20:48son in a general sense. But I think he
- 20:50must have also imagined that he would at
- 20:52least be speaking specifically to his
- 20:55own son who would one day become king. I
- 20:58don't know all about Riaboam or what
- 21:00went into him becoming king, but surely
- 21:03Solomon must have wanted them prepared
- 21:06to take the throne. But when the time
- 21:08came to choose wisdom, Riaboam made the
- 21:10wrong choice almost immediately.
- 21:14Wisdom, as you know, is not a collection
- 21:16of facts.
- 21:18It is not an aggregation of knowledge.
- 21:21It is knowing what to do in a given
- 21:23moment. Wisdom, simply put, can be this,
- 21:27making the right choices when you stand
- 21:30at the fork in the road. I've known
- 21:31people with great knowledge who lacked
- 21:32wisdom. I've known people who never had
- 21:35the opportunity to learn. as you learn
- 21:37in this great institution and yet they
- 21:39were simple people but they had great
- 21:41wisdom. The Bible tells us the fear of
- 21:44God is the beginning of wisdom. All of
- 21:46which is to say pursue knowledge but
- 21:48pursue wisdom. What is the right thing
- 21:52to do? When Riaboam became the king he
- 21:55listened to the advice of his counselors
- 21:58instead of wise counselors who had
- 22:00worked with his father. He became a
- 22:03companion of fools.
- 22:05The companion of fools will suffer harm.
- 22:08One of the most important decisions you
- 22:10will make is who you will listen to.
- 22:13I tell our young people, "Show me your
- 22:14friends. I will show you your future.
- 22:17Show me who you're listening to, who
- 22:19you're reading, who you're watching,
- 22:22who you're hanging with, and I will show
- 22:25you where you are headed." If you want
- 22:27to be wise, you must listen to those who
- 22:30have gone before you. Honor your father
- 22:32and mother. The Bible says with good
- 22:34reason. Listen to those who have taught
- 22:36you and poured life into you. Do not
- 22:39forget what you have been told. Riaboam
- 22:42said, "What would my friends do?"
- 22:44Instead of asking, "What would the Lord
- 22:46have me to do?" Choose wisdom and be
- 22:50careful with what is trendy and popular.
- 22:54Riaboam chose a contemporary approach.
- 22:57He chose what his friends thought wise.
- 23:00Riaboam's contemporaries may have been
- 23:02in step with the times, but they were
- 23:05out of step with the truth. It's not
- 23:08that old people are always right and
- 23:09young people are always wrong. I'm not
- 23:11saying that. But I am saying there is a
- 23:14great wealth in experience. The wise
- 23:17person listens. He benefits from those
- 23:21who have wisdom and who have walked the
- 23:24paths that they now trod. You can learn
- 23:27a lot by experience. But I will tell you
- 23:29this, experience is a costly teacher.
- 23:33It will cost you your most important
- 23:35commodity, time.
- 23:38The cheat code, if you want to call it
- 23:39that, is to listen to those who have
- 23:42walked the paths before you, who have
- 23:44gone down the roads and can tell you,
- 23:47"This is what you will face. This is
- 23:49what you will see." In a critical moment
- 23:52in Riaboam's life, he rejected the
- 23:54wisdom of the elders
- 23:57and he embraced the wisdom of his
- 23:59contemporaries.
- 24:00Choose wisdom. Number two, choose
- 24:02humility. Choose humility. When faced
- 24:05with a choice between pride and
- 24:08humility, it is almost always right to
- 24:11humble yourself.
- 24:13God resists the proud.
- 24:17Some translations, he opposes the proud.
- 24:20That's a frightening thing. By the way,
- 24:23when God sees pride,
- 24:26self-sufficiency, arrogance, when he
- 24:28sees pride,
- 24:30he opposes it. Now, let me help you with
- 24:33something. You don't want God opposing
- 24:35you.
- 24:36It's not going to go well.
- 24:39He gives grace to the humble. Does
- 24:41anyone here need grace? Of course we do.
- 24:44We need great grace. Who gets grace?
- 24:46Those who are humble.
- 24:48Humility, as you know, is not self-pity
- 24:51or self-degradation. It's acknowledging
- 24:53the important of God and others. It is
- 24:56acknowledging that there are things I do
- 24:59not know
- 25:00and things I cannot see. It is
- 25:03acknowledging that I cannot control
- 25:05everything. It is understanding that I
- 25:08am not the big deal. God is.
- 25:12God's not interested in building your
- 25:14platform. He's looking for people who
- 25:16will build a platform for his glory.
- 25:19Humility is honoring God and knowing he
- 25:24is the one who deserves all glory.
- 25:25Riaboam made a big deal of himself. He
- 25:29boasted, did he not, of his strength and
- 25:32his greatness when the truth is he had
- 25:34never accomplished anything close to his
- 25:36father. Compare that if you want to with
- 25:39how Solomon acted as a young man when
- 25:41God came to him and gave him a choice
- 25:44and a divine encounter. I will do
- 25:46anything for you. What is it you want me
- 25:48to do for you? Now, I'm not saying God
- 25:51gives us exactly that same proposition.
- 25:53He loves most of us. He loves all of us
- 25:55much too much to give us anything that
- 25:58we ask.
- 25:59But in a sense, he asks us that. What is
- 26:03it you want me to give you? What do you
- 26:06really want and need in your life? And
- 26:08what did Solomon do as a young man?
- 26:12I need wisdom.
- 26:14That's humility.
- 26:16In other words, as a young leader, he
- 26:18said, "I don't know everything I need to
- 26:21know.
- 26:23I don't understand everything I need to
- 26:25understand."
- 26:27So, don't worry about the money and the
- 26:29glory and all of that. if I could just
- 26:32gain wisdom and the Bible tells us God
- 26:36was pleased with that
- 26:39why are you here
- 26:42it must not simply be for some kind of
- 26:44certification that is a value I suppose
- 26:48in a way it's a very great value some
- 26:51validation there there's a reason for
- 26:52that but I pray that the greatest reason
- 26:55you are in this room and on this
- 26:56seminary and on this campus is God I
- 26:59need wisdom wisdom. I can't imagine you
- 27:01would be here if you weren't saying
- 27:03that. So, I want you to lean into that.
- 27:05That's my encouragement to you at the
- 27:06beginning of a new semester. Just remind
- 27:09yourself,
- 27:10I don't know everything I need to know.
- 27:13I haven't learned everything I need to
- 27:15learn. I don't know everything I need to
- 27:17know to do the next thing that God has
- 27:20in the next chapter of my life. So, oh
- 27:23God, give me wisdom. Riaboam did not
- 27:27pray for that. Everyone knows about the
- 27:29sinking of the Titanic in 1912. I
- 27:32suppose it is not only one of the
- 27:34greatest stories that has been told. It
- 27:36is probably the most common sermon
- 27:38illustration that preachers have ever
- 27:40used. Everyone knows about the pride,
- 27:42the arrogance, the avarice, and how the
- 27:44ship that couldn't sink was in fact
- 27:46sunk. But it was interesting to me that
- 27:48as familiar as we are all with the
- 27:50story, a new documentary a few years ago
- 27:52told a different story. It was the story
- 27:54of a submarine
- 27:57in 2023 that imploded and it imploded on
- 28:01a trip to see the Titanic. It tells a
- 28:05story of a brilliant and successful CEO,
- 28:07a brilliant man named Stockton Rush, the
- 28:10head of Ocean Gate. He helped develop a
- 28:13technology and dreamed of transporting
- 28:15wealthy tourists to see the wreckage of
- 28:18Titanic for themselves. And he took
- 28:20several trips. And yet his staff and
- 28:22scientists warned him that he was
- 28:24cutting corners that he was ignoring
- 28:28some of the the engineering flaws in his
- 28:31design. But he would not hear it. He did
- 28:34not believe he could make such a
- 28:35mistake. He became focused to the point
- 28:38of obsession over the great shipwreck
- 28:40and he forgot the lessons of the
- 28:43shipwreck. And on 2000 in 2023 on the
- 28:46submarine with tourists on board, it
- 28:49imploded and killed them all. And the
- 28:51name of the submarine, Titan.
- 28:55Titan. We do not learn.
- 28:59That's
- 29:01the course of human history. We ignore
- 29:03the lessons right in front of us. Choose
- 29:06humility. CS Lewis said, "Pride is a
- 29:08spiritual cancer. It eats up the
- 29:10possibility of love, contentment, or
- 29:12even common sense. Choose wisdom, choose
- 29:16humility, choose service. Did you see
- 29:19what the older counselor said to him? I
- 29:22find this fascinating for those of you
- 29:24who aspire to be leaders. What a
- 29:26leadership
- 29:28lesson this is. First Kings 12:7, "If
- 29:31you will be a servant to this people and
- 29:34serve them," he said this to the king,
- 29:37if you will respond by speaking kind
- 29:39words to them,
- 29:41they will be your servants forever. Is
- 29:44that not a leadership lesson? If you
- 29:46would use this opportunity for
- 29:48leadership to serve the people,
- 29:52they will serve you.
- 29:54Isn't that what our Lord taught us? we
- 29:56have not come to be served but to serve.
- 29:59That the first rule of leadership is to
- 30:01serve others. He could have listened and
- 30:02served but he ignored and he demanded
- 30:04that people serve him and instead of
- 30:06serving others he saw leadership as an
- 30:08opportunity to use others. If you want
- 30:11to lead people win their hearts. That is
- 30:13what my pastor Bill Anderson told me
- 30:14when at 20 years old too soon too soon.
- 30:1720 years old I took my first church as a
- 30:19pastor 50 people in Dora Alabama and I
- 30:23asked Dr. Anderson, what's one final
- 30:25lesson you want to give me? He said, win
- 30:27their hearts.
- 30:29And I said, what does that mean? He
- 30:30said, love them. And he gave me some
- 30:33ways to do that. Demonstrate that you
- 30:36love those people. And if you love them,
- 30:40they will follow you. You can lead them.
- 30:43Serve them. Lastly, I would simply say
- 30:45this.
- 30:47Choose God. It was said of Riaboam. He
- 30:50did what was evil because he did not
- 30:52determine in his heart to seek the Lord.
- 30:57Ultimately, Riaboam's
- 30:59tragedy is that he did not seek God. He
- 31:04was arrogant.
- 31:06He was
- 31:08insolent. He ignored the advice, the
- 31:12wisdom of others. He did not seek the
- 31:14Lord. There's no evidence in his life
- 31:16that he sought God. Look at his father,
- 31:18David and Solomon. for all their flaws.
- 31:20They sought the Lord throughout their
- 31:21life at different times. Every time
- 31:23David was confronted, and he did fail
- 31:25multiple times, but when he was
- 31:27confronted, you'll notice he always
- 31:29repented. He listened. He could humble
- 31:31himself and be corrected. Not so Riable.
- 31:36Shields of bronze are shields of gold.
- 31:39You can trot them out and you can
- 31:41impress the crowds.
- 31:43But shields of gold,
- 31:46only God can produce those. God's
- 31:49blessing, God's favor. I want you to
- 31:52have the real thing in your life.
- 31:55I want you to be authentic.
- 31:57I want you to have God's power and his
- 31:59favor and his blessing on your marriage,
- 32:01on your life, on your vocation, and on
- 32:03your work. So, I beg you, do not take
- 32:07the shortcut. Do not simply
- 32:10trot out what glitters so that the
- 32:13crowds will be impressed and the people
- 32:15will be odd. It won't last very long. It
- 32:18won't last very long. Oh, they'll be
- 32:21impressed. It doesn't matter. You know
- 32:23what matters? That you have God's
- 32:24blessing and grace upon your life. So,
- 32:27at the beginning of this semester,
- 32:29choose wisdom,
- 32:31choose humility, choose service. Who
- 32:34will you serve? And choose God. And may
- 32:38his grace and blessing rest upon you and
- 32:40give you shields of gold in your life
- 32:44and in your work
- 32:48for his glory. Living God, I do pray
- 32:50this. I pray for these young people who
- 32:54represent unimaginable potential,
- 32:57unimaginable giftedness. You will call
- 33:00them into all walks of life
- 33:04and uh into your work in leading your
- 33:06churches.
- 33:08There are those assembled here who will
- 33:11preach sermons and write books and build
- 33:13businesses.
- 33:15And God, how we need them, how your
- 33:17kingdom needs them, how this nation
- 33:19needs them, how your churches need them.
- 33:22Lord, we pray that you will use them.
- 33:25that you will call them, that you will
- 33:27fill them with your Holy Spirit, that
- 33:29they will be grounded upon your truth,
- 33:32that the lessons they learn here will
- 33:33guide them, ground them all the days of
- 33:36their life. Father, I pray that you
- 33:38would give us a hunger for that which is
- 33:41more than shiny
- 33:44and contemporary.
- 33:46Give us a hunger for that which is
- 33:48grounded and true and lasting and of
- 33:50real value.
- 33:53Lord, may it be so in our lives. May it
- 33:55be so in our work for your great glory.
- 33:58We pray this in the name of our Lord
- 34:00Jesus. Amen.
