- 0:56Speaker 2: tip off, and finally, Kayak angler Christine Fisher will join
- 0:59Speaker 2: us for some one minute fishing redemption. But first, before
- 1:03Speaker 2: we hear about this successful bear hunt and successful turkey hunt,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I have a listener feedback prompt for those folks who
- 1:11Speaker 2: are joining us live. All your questions today give him
- 1:14Speaker 2: to Phil. Let's let's make every Phil's gonna answer everything
- 1:17Speaker 2: Phil doesn't know about this. Ask Phil like the hardest
- 1:20Speaker 2: video game level he's ever played? Is, what his favorite
- 1:24Speaker 2: cover song is? What his first card was? Phil is
- 1:27Speaker 2: always getting all kinds of questions. But but he doesn't
- 1:29Speaker 2: want to throw himself into the spotlight.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Is uncomfortable.
- 1:33Speaker 2: He ignores those questions that people send. But today we're
- 1:36Speaker 2: gonna make him address those questions. So just direct your
- 1:39Speaker 2: questions at Phil. He's gonna answer them. This is gonna
- 1:43Speaker 2: be phil feedback.
- 1:44Speaker 4: All right for this Thursday, Let's do it.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Okay, he's he's mildly on board.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm also excited. All right, let's talk about the bear
- 1:53Speaker 2: hunt Yanni, big old dead bear in Manitoba. How to
- 1:56Speaker 2: go down?
- 1:59Speaker 1: H the actual kill? How'd that go down?
- 2:02Speaker 2: You want to hear the story however you'd like.
- 2:05Speaker 1: There's a lot to tell. Okay, let's see some photos
- 2:09Speaker 1: that will help. That will help me.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Yeah, jog the old memory.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Along we baited. Oh wow, that's Craig McCarthy of North
- 2:17Speaker 1: Mountain Adventures seeing his wife Melanie. They run a great outfit.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Hi demand though, if you want to book a bear hunt,
- 2:25Speaker 1: you can't get in there until twenty twenty nine. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: found out.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Twenty twenty nine. Geez man, are are resident tags guaranteed
- 2:35Speaker 2: in Manitoba?
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yes, okay, yeah, so they can hunt as much as
- 2:37Speaker 1: they want.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Have you been planning this trip since twenty twenty one.
- 2:41Speaker 1: No, their demand has just increased with a little bit
- 2:46Speaker 1: of day with a little meat eater exposure, but a
- 2:50Speaker 1: little bit. But they've also just been crushing it, doing
- 2:53Speaker 1: a good job. Like I said, it's a great outfit.
- 2:56Speaker 1: It's the quintessential family run outfit. Like you are your
- 2:59Speaker 1: stay in a cabin, but when you go have a meal,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you're in their house having meals with their kids, who
- 3:06Speaker 1: are both lovely, full on and they wouldn't feel bad
- 3:10Speaker 1: if I called them like this, but their kids are
- 3:12Speaker 1: getting to grow up, barrel and it made me sort
- 3:14Speaker 1: of like rethink what I'm doing with my kids. They
- 3:18Speaker 1: got a creek running through the backyard. The girl rolls
- 3:20Speaker 1: in with like three creek chubs on a line, all
- 3:23Speaker 1: muddy and dirty. What are you doing? I'm gonna do
- 3:25Speaker 1: with those? I'm gonna chop them up and cheap feed
- 3:27Speaker 1: them to the chickens.
- 3:28Speaker 2: You know, maybe that was your bear bait.
- 3:31Speaker 1: No baar bait was as you can see in those barrels,
- 3:36Speaker 1: oats and corn doused with used fryer oil and then
- 3:41Speaker 1: sometimes a few extra sweets. Dainties. They call him up
- 3:46Speaker 1: there in that part of the world.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yanni is showing us a photo that looks like he's
- 3:50Speaker 2: hunting in a zoo. There are two black bears ten
- 3:53Speaker 2: yards behind a side by side who are waiting for
- 3:56Speaker 2: the baits to be deployed.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yes, and I have videos, but side by side that
- 4:02Speaker 1: canm is parked exactly where it is, and I'm leaning
- 4:05Speaker 1: against it where Craig's standing there, and one of those
- 4:08Speaker 1: two bears in that picture are eating from the top
- 4:12Speaker 1: of the barrel, licking the grease off, like from me
- 4:14Speaker 1: to you. So baiting really works, And what's cool about
- 4:20Speaker 1: it is that, you know, because not everybody wants to
- 4:23Speaker 1: be like, oh it's so easy, Well, there's a lot
- 4:26Speaker 1: of work that goes into it. You know, you got
- 4:27Speaker 1: to bait them up first, get them excited about it.
- 4:31Speaker 1: They only start baiting, interestingly enough, about two weeks before
- 4:34Speaker 1: season starts, so it's not a year round thing. It's
- 4:37Speaker 1: not a long baiting season. It's just a couple of weeks.
- 4:43Speaker 1: But the cool part about the baiting is is that
- 4:46Speaker 1: you really get to watch bear behavior which is super
- 4:50Speaker 1: neat like spot sock hunting. You're never gonna sit there
- 4:54Speaker 1: and get to hear all the little nuanced noises that
- 4:57Speaker 1: they make. They have these very like Star Wars Wookie
- 5:01Speaker 1: like sort of many growls that but it almost sounds
- 5:05Speaker 1: like when they go into hyperspace and you get that
- 5:08Speaker 1: kind of sound right when they're flying those bears, when
- 5:13Speaker 1: another bear is approaching and getting getting a little too close,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you just hear this.
- 5:17Speaker 5: Like.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Is that how they sound?
- 5:20Speaker 3: Phil, I'm sure in one of the trilogies it probably
- 5:26Speaker 3: sounds something like that. That's not the first sound I
- 5:29Speaker 3: would make, but you know.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Well, maybe it's not. Maybe it's not hyper space, maybe
- 5:33Speaker 1: it's some other sort of that.
- 5:36Speaker 3: It sounds kind of like, yeah, tractor beam or when
- 5:38Speaker 3: the Millennium Falcon is breaking down and it kind of.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Goes Wookie adjacent.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, that's it. Yeah, when they're whatever is
- 5:47Speaker 1: powering the Millennium Falcon is like sort of powering down
- 5:51Speaker 1: and they're like hitting the butts and knock and stuff.
- 5:54Speaker 2: There fills index of movie sound effects over there. You
- 5:58Speaker 2: could hear Yanni's impression and knew exactly what it was.
- 6:03Speaker 1: All right, what else we got?
- 6:04Speaker 6: So?
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah, bear baiting was cool. It works good. You get
- 6:07Speaker 1: to check them out. We hung beavers. Beavers, for whatever reason,
- 6:12Speaker 1: are so attractive. Oh yeah, that's the one there where
- 6:16Speaker 1: you can see my butt. That's the one where I'm
- 6:17Speaker 1: super close to him.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, we're watching Yanni and a bear look at each
- 6:26Speaker 2: other from how far? Like ten steps?
- 6:28Speaker 1: Not even like I could have reached out three yards.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Okay, you got long arms. Is there anything else that
- 6:35Speaker 2: bothers their bait piles?
- 6:37Speaker 1: Not too much. I was surprised that there wasn't more
- 6:40Speaker 1: stuff coming in, like you'd see a few bears, maybe
- 6:43Speaker 1: a squirrel would roll through. But yeah, and the pictures
- 6:47Speaker 1: didn't really you know, we weren't catching skunks and other stuff,
- 6:52Speaker 1: but the beaver. He said, he'll have deer carcasses, bear carcasses,
- 6:57Speaker 1: and the bears are indifferent, but beaver carcass. They won't
- 7:02Speaker 1: even look at that barrel full of corn oats, friar oil, doughnuts, croissants.
- 7:08Speaker 1: They love the beaver. Craig thinks it's because it's one
- 7:12Speaker 1: of the first foods available in the spring, and they're
- 7:15Speaker 1: taught that that, you know, by mom. They go to
- 7:17Speaker 1: a beaver run and just sit there and you know,
- 7:20Speaker 1: catch catch beavers. So the first night at beaver was
- 7:24Speaker 1: just hung on a tree ten feet up. First bear
- 7:28Speaker 1: comes in, runs up there, gets it, runs off. You
- 7:30Speaker 1: listen to them eat it for the next couple of
- 7:31Speaker 1: hours in the bush fifty yards away. So I'm like, well,
- 7:34Speaker 1: we got hang this beaver better, right for more entertainment.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So one night we did sort of like a like
- 7:41Speaker 1: a high linele you like tie off a horse too,
- 7:44Speaker 1: and had it in the middle, but they really had
- 7:46Speaker 1: no way to get to it, and they must have
- 7:48Speaker 1: known that because they kind of were like, yeah, we'd
- 7:50Speaker 1: look at it, smell it, we're not messing with the
- 7:52Speaker 1: Next night we did it more of like how you
- 7:53Speaker 1: hang food. We just throw it over a limb and
- 7:56Speaker 1: it was maybe four feet out. That got their attention
- 8:00Speaker 1: way more. They were like, oh, they could like touch
- 8:02Speaker 1: the rope and then they could see that it was
- 8:04Speaker 1: attached to the beaver. But still the first two gave
- 8:08Speaker 1: it like two minutes and we're like, we're gonna go
- 8:10Speaker 1: to the barrel, and he eats the stuff in the barrel.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Third bear comes in, he's like, screw the barrel. Spends
- 8:16Speaker 1: an hour trying to figure out how to get that
- 8:19Speaker 1: beaver down up the tree, down the tree, going to
- 8:22Speaker 1: the next tree over up that tree, walking out on
- 8:24Speaker 1: the limb, like, came over to our tree, came up
- 8:27Speaker 1: halfway up our tree and was like, dude, I'm getting
- 8:30Speaker 1: frustrated over here. Get that beaver down. Went back down.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Eventually grabs there's a video of this, grabs that yellow
- 8:38Speaker 1: rope that the beaver's hanging by with his teeth, then
- 8:41Speaker 1: gets it in his claws, goes to the base of
- 8:43Speaker 1: the tree, lets it go, and the beaver sort of
- 8:46Speaker 1: you know, it's been pulled up and it slides down stops. Now.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't know if he knew that or she that
- 8:52Speaker 1: if you did that enough time, something would give. But
- 8:55Speaker 1: basically he did that five times in a row, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: eventually the little noose that we had around the beaver popped. Yeah,
- 9:01Speaker 1: at that point we were rooting for him because an
- 9:03Speaker 1: hour into it, I'm like, man, I should just go
- 9:05Speaker 1: down there and cut that thing down for that guy.
- 9:07Speaker 1: He deserves to get that beaver.
- 9:10Speaker 2: What was the movement like almost exclusively morning and evening
- 9:14Speaker 2: or are they were also rolling in at one pm?
- 9:16Speaker 1: They're according to the moul trees all day long, but
- 9:20Speaker 1: the mature bores, it's a it's an hour of power thing.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Last hour I shooting light ended the day that I
- 9:30Speaker 1: killed my bear, and I think at ten twenty and
- 9:33Speaker 1: I killed my bear at ten oh six. Damn yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I know, definitely the latest animal I've ever killed, I think,
- 9:40Speaker 1: unless I miss forgetting something in Alaska. You know Alaska,
- 9:43Speaker 1: you could kind of hunt that lad too. But it
- 9:46Speaker 1: was cool because we had seen a bunch of bears.
- 9:48Speaker 1: It's getting late in the day, be at that point
- 9:51Speaker 1: that was the most we had seen. I think we've
- 9:53Speaker 1: seen saw two cubs, the four one hundred and fifty
- 9:56Speaker 1: pounders that are like this guy that's in the video.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Now you can and see the video that Yanni is
- 10:01Speaker 2: referencing on the med Eater podcast YouTube channel. Check out
- 10:05Speaker 2: the episode's media to Radio Live.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And then we saw like a lanky six footer but
- 10:11Speaker 1: he just wasn't thick. And then it was cool is
- 10:15Speaker 1: we could just barely see out to this field that
- 10:18Speaker 1: was had just been dis maybe so it's just dirt,
- 10:21Speaker 1: and you could see bears every now and then, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: then eventually they'd kind of show up at the bait.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So you see like Mama and she was this real
- 10:27Speaker 1: pretty cinnamon and she had I think this one was
- 10:31Speaker 1: the one with three cubs. She had like a black cub,
- 10:34Speaker 1: a cinnamon cub, and a blonde cub. And but like,
- 10:39Speaker 1: with fifteen minutes of light left, I look out there,
- 10:42Speaker 1: I'm like, man, that joker looks like he's got a
- 10:44Speaker 1: little more girth to him, you know. And sure enough,
- 10:46Speaker 1: when he got to the edge of the meadow where
- 10:49Speaker 1: he's maybe sixty seventy yards from the bait, everybody at
- 10:52Speaker 1: the bait scatters, cubs are going up trees, everybody's getting
- 10:56Speaker 1: out of there. This dude that finally had the beaver,
- 10:58Speaker 1: he moves off like another fifty yards and this when
- 11:01Speaker 1: this big sucker rolls in, and it was like the
- 11:03Speaker 1: woods just went quiet, like he just rolled in. He
- 11:07Speaker 1: was the man. But still then with such little bear
- 11:10Speaker 1: experience for me, I looked back at Max. I'm like,
- 11:13Speaker 1: is that the one I'm supposed to shoot? You know?
- 11:16Speaker 1: Like I didn't. I mean, ends up being a almost
- 11:19Speaker 1: four hundred pounder seven a square seven and a half feet,
- 11:24Speaker 1: had a twenty and three quarter inch skulls is that
- 11:30Speaker 1: boot and Crockett twenty one? Yeah, so he's real close.
- 11:34Speaker 2: There, So you need to find a more generous measure, maybe.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, there it is. There's cracking out with the bear
- 11:42Speaker 1: at the recovery and it was great. He only went
- 11:44Speaker 1: like fifty yards. I'm guessing he was not alive more
- 11:48Speaker 1: than thirty seconds. Shot him a six hundred grain arrow
- 11:55Speaker 1: that was tipped with a two hundred grain iron wheel
- 11:57Speaker 1: single bevel. Yeah, good shot, right through both both lungs.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Is that your first bear with a bow?
- 12:08Speaker 1: First bear ever? Oh? Yeah, first bear ever? Well, I
- 12:11Speaker 1: killed one in my yard at mngus that had treed,
- 12:16Speaker 1: but I don't really count that as it wasn't a
- 12:19Speaker 1: hunted bear.
- 12:20Speaker 2: You know, you said that you asked Max if this
- 12:23Speaker 2: was the one you were supposed to shoot. I assume
- 12:25Speaker 2: then that they had like a rollodex of what bears
- 12:28Speaker 2: existed in this set of woods.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Well, you have trailcam photos and videos right, sort of
- 12:35Speaker 1: what's been showing up lately. But the thing was we
- 12:37Speaker 1: were pretty late into May when we were actually there
- 12:40Speaker 1: into June, and so the ruts definitely heating up, and
- 12:43Speaker 1: so he's like, yeah, look man, like there's a sour round,
- 12:46Speaker 1: there's gonna be boars rolling in. So there are these
- 12:50Speaker 1: two and there was one that had a little white
- 12:52Speaker 1: patch and there was the other one, which is the
- 12:53Speaker 1: one that I had killed off his bait. But he's
- 12:55Speaker 1: like there could be a giant chocolate.
- 12:58Speaker 4: But they didn't have names. No liketron, no no jokers.
- 13:03Speaker 2: That was what Yanni called him.
- 13:04Speaker 1: They outfit pretty close to the boundary of a national
- 13:09Speaker 1: park and it's I can't remember the acreage of the
- 13:12Speaker 1: national park, but it's huge. And so they sort of
- 13:15Speaker 1: have this, you know, sanctuary right next to him. And
- 13:18Speaker 1: so they have this a constant replenishment of bears. So
- 13:22Speaker 1: you really don't know who's going to show up.
- 13:23Speaker 2: What's what's their program in the far the guiding deer
- 13:26Speaker 2: hunters as well.
- 13:28Speaker 1: A little bit of deer, mostly moose. I actually might
- 13:32Speaker 1: go up and do an exploratory caribou hunt with him
- 13:35Speaker 1: this I haven't decided that yet. I invited Clay. He
- 13:40Speaker 1: was very excited, but it doesn't the dates don't work well.
- 13:44Speaker 2: I guess that on the back from Randall means nothing.
- 13:46Speaker 2: That he just gave you a minute ago.
- 13:48Speaker 1: We can discuss Randal.
- 13:50Speaker 4: I think we have a great on camera dynamic.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Y yeah, I agree, I agree, it could be a
- 13:55Speaker 1: good time. Exploratory means that another outfit that runs up there,
- 13:59Speaker 1: has switched his business basically to all eco tourism. But
- 14:03Speaker 1: he has the lodging and the equipment everything set up
- 14:06Speaker 1: four caribou hunts, but he just doesn't want to do
- 14:08Speaker 1: the hunting anymore. He's got just the same amount of
- 14:11Speaker 1: money in eco tourism and doesn't have to deal with
- 14:13Speaker 1: skin and critters and you know. And uh so he's
- 14:18Speaker 1: basically said to Craig like, hey, if you want to
- 14:20Speaker 1: run it out of here, you can just give me
- 14:22Speaker 1: a you know, cut off the top. And so Craig
- 14:25Speaker 1: doesn't know anything about it. He needs pictures, he needs images.
- 14:28Speaker 1: He's sure it's a good hunt. And I'm like, oh,
- 14:31Speaker 1: well I could be here your guinea pig, you know.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yeah, then maybe take Spencer and Randall with you. It's gone, we.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Could do already. We've already ditched me eat.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Roast reducts, battle north of the border.
- 14:46Speaker 1: We'll go.
- 14:46Speaker 2: We'll kill the thing and then cook it. Thank you.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that look like a lot of fun. Oh it's
- 14:52Speaker 1: a great, great trip. Man, We really got the whole
- 14:54Speaker 1: Manitoba experience. Got killed on day three. We had two
- 14:57Speaker 1: more days, so we got to go fishing for a
- 14:59Speaker 1: half day, cooked an awesome bear meal. You know all
- 15:04Speaker 1: this stuff about bears, whether you like them or not.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And I'm in the same boat of being often being like,
- 15:09Speaker 1: do I really want to kill a bear?
- 15:11Speaker 3: Oh?
- 15:11Speaker 1: They're kind of cuddly. Oh they're more curious or smarter
- 15:14Speaker 1: than these other animals that we hunt or whatever. But
- 15:16Speaker 1: as soon as I get to eating one, I'm like, oh,
- 15:18Speaker 1: I should kill a bear every year, because like, we
- 15:21Speaker 1: just did an overnight Brian and then slow roasted it
- 15:24Speaker 1: the next day, and then like ninety minutes you go
- 15:27Speaker 1: to baste it and it's got an inch of pan
- 15:30Speaker 1: juice and there's just besides maybe a hog. But I
- 15:34Speaker 1: don't care what fat cow elk you shoot. You're not
- 15:38Speaker 1: going to get an inch of pan juice in your
- 15:40Speaker 1: roasting pan. No certain that animal or deer or care
- 15:44Speaker 1: or whatever, you know what I mean. And I'm pumped.
- 15:46Speaker 7: Man.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I brought home a I brought home probably well over
- 15:50Speaker 1: one hundred pounds of bear meal.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Okay, now you're gonna have a big old bear rug
- 15:54Speaker 2: in your house in the office.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I haven't decided yet, man, I got a quote twenty
- 15:59Speaker 1: five hundred for six footer and it goes up from there.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So the seven footer, I don't even know holy what
- 16:06Speaker 1: it's gonna be, but that's what. Yeah, that's what the
- 16:08Speaker 1: going rate is right now. And h so I might
- 16:11Speaker 1: just get her tanned.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Okay, seems like a lot, I know.
- 16:15Speaker 1: I mean that's half of another bear hunt to go on,
- 16:17Speaker 1: you know, yeah, wow. But it's also like, well, when's
- 16:21Speaker 1: the next time you're gonna kill a seven plus foot
- 16:24Speaker 1: black bear? Nine? I don't have to draw. Yeah, you
- 16:29Speaker 1: just got to get a spot before we move.
- 16:32Speaker 2: On here about Randall's turkey ONNT you said you wanted
- 16:34Speaker 2: to talk about an argument you and Max, Yeah, toast versus.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah, viewers can help us out too with this. So
- 16:42Speaker 1: one morning, Eli Harris, whose new videographer Forrest Force on
- 16:47Speaker 1: this strip, did a great job. He makes Max and I, uh,
- 16:51Speaker 1: some tote in the whole breakfast, which is just when
- 16:53Speaker 1: you take a piece of toast, cut out of a
- 16:54Speaker 1: hole in the middle, crack an egg in it, fr
- 16:56Speaker 1: it up. Max pours maple seers all over his and
- 17:02Speaker 1: then proceeds to tell me that it's pretty much like
- 17:03Speaker 1: French toast, and I'm like, you have kind of some
- 17:08Speaker 1: of the ingredients are the same.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Half of them.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's not French toast. It doesn't taste like
- 17:14Speaker 1: French toast.
- 17:14Speaker 4: You don't make it like French toast.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Well, you frieday in a pan. That part is similar.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Is it closer to French toast or toast and a
- 17:23Speaker 4: fried egg?
- 17:25Speaker 1: I would say toast and a fried egg. Even if
- 17:28Speaker 1: you put maple syrup on toast and a fried egg,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I would still say it's closer to toast and a
- 17:33Speaker 1: fried egg.
- 17:33Speaker 4: It's very clearly a gimmicky way to make a toast
- 17:36Speaker 4: and a fried egg. French toast.
- 17:38Speaker 2: It feels like it's for a child, Like that's what
- 17:40Speaker 2: you'd cook for your eleven year old. To get outside
- 17:43Speaker 2: about cereal hope.
- 17:45Speaker 1: See, I really enjoy a toad in the hole because
- 17:47Speaker 1: I use a lot of I'm not saying a lot
- 17:48Speaker 1: of a lot of butter, so that toast is just
- 17:51Speaker 1: like extra crispy buttery. Anyways, Max is like it's pretty
- 17:55Speaker 1: much French toast. Eli is like adding his French toast.
- 17:58Speaker 1: You know what.
- 17:58Speaker 2: I wouldn't argue with either one of you. I felt like, no,
- 18:01Speaker 2: I think you could have syrup on it. Not that
- 18:03Speaker 2: wouldn't be offensive to me.
- 18:04Speaker 1: It's not offensive I'm just saying it's not French toast.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Not French tos.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Agree with you there, Yeah, not at all.
- 18:10Speaker 2: There's got to be some other weird regional names for
- 18:13Speaker 2: that food that I'm not aware of.
- 18:15Speaker 4: The egg and the yeah and yeah, a French term.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I know, egg in a basket, bull's eye quote whatever,
- 18:27Speaker 1: croaked to toast. What do the viewers say? Not even
- 18:31Speaker 1: close to nest.
- 18:32Speaker 2: One of them says, is what it's called egg in
- 18:34Speaker 2: a basket?
- 18:36Speaker 4: Okay, Yeah, looks like you got a quote on a
- 18:39Speaker 4: on a rug. They're honest.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Someone, someone's gonna lower the price for you.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Oh yeah, tell any good tax numbers. They're big meat
- 18:48Speaker 1: eater fans. D m me tell us about the the
- 18:54Speaker 1: Cory's got a big bear rug too. We'll send.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And maybe a turkey customer tell us about this dead turkey.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Well, we didn't, Max and I didn't get into any
- 19:05Speaker 4: arguments about breakfast food on our hunt. We actually didn't
- 19:09Speaker 4: eat breakfast until after the turkey was dead because it
- 19:12Speaker 4: got shot at shooting light.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Essentially, it's amazing you two shot your animals, probably like
- 19:19Speaker 2: six hours apart or something like that, but one of
- 19:21Speaker 2: you in the morning, one of you in the evening.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, and.
- 19:26Speaker 1: No, Max.
- 19:27Speaker 4: Max took me out. We found a We went to
- 19:30Speaker 4: a property hees got permission on. We started, climbed up
- 19:32Speaker 4: to a little ridge and drank some beers and gobbled
- 19:36Speaker 4: and the turkeys gobbled back, and then we glassed one up.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Then we found another one and we never saw him,
- 19:44Speaker 4: but we went back and that night Max said, I
- 19:48Speaker 4: had to make the decision about whether or not I
- 19:51Speaker 4: wanted to go to the one that we didn't see
- 19:53Speaker 4: or the one we saw.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Huh.
- 19:55Speaker 4: And so we played a quick game of chance and
- 19:58Speaker 4: the one that we saw. And you know, I can't
- 20:01Speaker 4: really do justice to this hunt, So Phil, I spent
- 20:05Speaker 4: about nine minutes yesterday using the movie maker feature on
- 20:09Speaker 4: my iPhone and would you just play play that? I
- 20:13Speaker 4: think it my first turkey hunt. Max took me hunting
- 20:26Speaker 4: with that one.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Oh you cut out the part of you running at
- 20:32Speaker 2: the bird there. I like that, Thank you, sir. Thanks,
- 20:37Speaker 2: it's Max crying in the background.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Three three, first gobbler, look.
- 20:43Speaker 2: At that sunrise.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Dude, what a great day.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Very nice.
- 20:50Speaker 3: You know what that reminds me of is when like
- 20:52Speaker 3: on Sesame Street, they'll have kids like I went to
- 20:55Speaker 3: the fact the candy factory we got to watch them
- 20:58Speaker 3: make chok plan. There's just a bunch of b roll. Yeah,
- 21:00Speaker 3: I was gonna.
- 21:01Speaker 4: I was adding this stuff to the drive, and when
- 21:04Speaker 4: I was like manipulating the files on my phone trying
- 21:06Speaker 4: to send them places, it was like, do you want
- 21:08Speaker 4: to open this in iMovie?
- 21:10Speaker 1: And I was like, what the hell?
- 21:11Speaker 4: Yes, I would like, but I literally couldn't figure out
- 21:14Speaker 4: how to change the text on the title or how
- 21:17Speaker 4: to get rid of it.
- 21:17Speaker 3: It's not very just thought it was a really funny joke,
- 21:19Speaker 3: but no.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I don't think you did justice to how you determine
- 21:23Speaker 2: which turkey were going After.
- 21:26Speaker 4: We we flipped an empty es in canu in the
- 21:31Speaker 4: in the truck as we drove onto the property, and
- 21:34Speaker 4: it landed heads up or heads down, heads up, which
- 21:37Speaker 4: was the ridgebird. Wow, bottom of the can was the
- 21:41Speaker 4: house bird. So yeah, we hiked into where this thing
- 21:45Speaker 4: was and about we didn't hear any gobbles, And ten
- 21:51Speaker 4: minutes before shooting light, Max said he was going to
- 21:54Speaker 4: start calling, you know, in fifteen minutes or so, So
- 21:58Speaker 4: he's going to call just after shooting light to let
- 22:00Speaker 4: the bird come down. Then right after he said that
- 22:03Speaker 4: the bird started gobbling. So Max waited a little while
- 22:07Speaker 4: longer till it was shooting light and started talking back
- 22:10Speaker 4: to it, and it came right in and Max coached
- 22:14Speaker 4: me through it. And I don't know if you could
- 22:15Speaker 4: hear it in that in that little cinematic treat, but
- 22:20Speaker 4: Max actually just goes get him and that's when I shot. Okay,
- 22:25Speaker 4: So I didn't realize he was filming me, but he
- 22:28Speaker 4: he sort of was coach. He's like, he's like, I
- 22:30Speaker 4: just followed the sound with your gun barrel, so when
- 22:32Speaker 4: it pops up, you don't have to move to get him.
- 22:35Speaker 4: And so I shifted the barrel over slightly to where
- 22:38Speaker 4: I last I heard it. And then there's a big
- 22:42Speaker 4: fan in my face and then the fan goes away
- 22:46Speaker 4: and this head comes up and they had turned sideways
- 22:48Speaker 4: and then Max.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Goes shoot him and I gave it to him, great
- 22:53Speaker 2: adle movie. Clay Nwcombe come in and he said that
- 22:56Speaker 2: was a film.
- 22:57Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's a that was a project.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I doubt that's the real Clay nuke on this spy
- 23:02Speaker 1: just some dude signed in Clay Nukee.
- 23:06Speaker 2: No.
- 23:06Speaker 3: I hope it is Clay because he's been having a
- 23:08Speaker 3: conversation with Brent, and Brent thinks it's class.
- 23:10Speaker 4: I will say that the hardest part of making that
- 23:12Speaker 4: was figuring out how to do the voiceover feature, because
- 23:16Speaker 4: then when it has you record the voiceover, you can't
- 23:20Speaker 4: listen to the audio, so you end up talking over
- 23:23Speaker 4: the things you want to hear. So I probably did
- 23:25Speaker 4: five takes on that, which was maybe four and a
- 23:28Speaker 4: half minutes of the eight to nine minutes I spent
- 23:32Speaker 4: making it.
- 23:33Speaker 1: You nailed it, Now, what happened to the you were
- 23:35Speaker 1: gonna Last time I saw you, you patterned a ten
- 23:38Speaker 1: gage that you were going to use.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Yeah, but remember that that trigger didn't work.
- 23:45Speaker 2: No, you didn't remember that. I took trigger too heavy
- 23:48Speaker 2: or too light or.
- 23:49Speaker 4: A double trigger, and one of them just doesn't reset.
- 23:53Speaker 4: And I've gotten it to get fixed. I took it
- 23:55Speaker 4: right back away. I took it right back from the shop,
- 23:57Speaker 4: took it straight to the two seven seven shooting experiment.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Cracked off one barrel. We were all impressed, and then
- 24:04Speaker 4: I went to crack off the other one and just
- 24:07Speaker 4: did the thing where you shoot a gun and you're
- 24:09Speaker 4: anticipating the recoil and you just squirm. So it's fixed now, apparently,
- 24:14Speaker 4: but I have yet to pick it up, so next year.
- 24:15Speaker 1: We'll get the next Are you are you going to
- 24:19Speaker 1: go turkey hunting again? Did you have that much fun? Yeah?
- 24:22Speaker 4: I had a great time. I mean it was just
- 24:23Speaker 4: like a fun morning.
- 24:24Speaker 5: You know.
- 24:24Speaker 4: I didn't suffer for it.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I didn't.
- 24:27Speaker 4: I didn't dream about it. But it was very fun
- 24:32Speaker 4: to see someone who knows what they're doing, just like
- 24:36Speaker 4: work a property and then work a bird. So I
- 24:39Speaker 4: learned a lot and I see the appeal of it.
- 24:42Speaker 4: We've eaten two meals out of it so far. We
- 24:46Speaker 4: did a little Katsu chicken style turkey bowl and then
- 24:51Speaker 4: we did.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Two comments I want a highlight. One of them is
- 25:01Speaker 2: Clay Newcombe says, this is the Clay Newcombe, which is
- 25:04Speaker 2: exactly what an imposter.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to say someone and then and
- 25:07Speaker 3: then he also said a Kern spell too hard. Yeah,
- 25:11Speaker 3: that's exactly what someone who wasn't Clay would say to
- 25:14Speaker 3: make us think that they were.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And then someone else said, Randall Spielberg.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Randall Ford Coppola, that was another one.
- 25:20Speaker 2: There you go, first bear hunt story or excuse me,
- 25:23Speaker 2: first dead bear story, first dead turkey story.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Yeah, well done, boy, a couple.
- 25:27Speaker 1: First, Hey, thanks all right. Moving on.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Joining us on the line now is Owen back Huber,
- 25:37Speaker 2: a grad student from California Polytechnic State University. He's here
- 25:42Speaker 2: to talk about Project Rattlecam. Owen, welcome to the show.
- 25:46Speaker 1: Thanks for having me. Owen.
- 25:47Speaker 2: First thing, tell us what Project rattlecam is.
- 25:52Speaker 8: Yeah, So, Project Rattlecam is a partnership between cal Poly
- 25:55Speaker 8: and Dicketson College run by my advisor Emily Taylor and
- 25:58Speaker 8: our partner Scott bo Back, and we use cameras to
- 26:01Speaker 8: study snake behavior. So this actually started by using trail
- 26:04Speaker 8: cameras at battlesnake dens to get a sense of what
- 26:06Speaker 8: they were doing throughout the year. But they do so
- 26:08Speaker 8: many cool behaviors right that we can't really capture that
- 26:11Speaker 8: with just still images. And so that's where we're using
- 26:13Speaker 8: live streaming cameras now to broadcast these dens live to
- 26:16Speaker 8: YouTube so that we can study them as well as
- 26:18Speaker 8: share them with the public.
- 26:20Speaker 2: And what sorts of things can scientists learn from this
- 26:22Speaker 2: twenty four to seven monitoring.
- 26:26Speaker 8: Yeah, so, as I'm sure that you know, just the
- 26:28Speaker 8: presence of a researcher near an animal can have an
- 26:31Speaker 8: impact on their behavior, and so a lot of our
- 26:34Speaker 8: perceptions of what snakes are like and what they do
- 26:36Speaker 8: are impacted by them responding to us right to see
- 26:39Speaker 8: a snake. They might sit still trying to hope that
- 26:41Speaker 8: you ignore them and move away. They might act defensively,
- 26:45Speaker 8: and so what I'm studying is the social behaviors and
- 26:48Speaker 8: communication between the snakes. So we actually see that battlesnakes
- 26:52Speaker 8: have friends, they have individuals that they prefer to spend
- 26:54Speaker 8: time with, and they seem to have communication too. So
- 26:58Speaker 8: they do this really cool head twitching behavior where they
- 27:00Speaker 8: kind of bob their heads at each other as they approach,
- 27:03Speaker 8: and we're trying to figure out what that's all about,
- 27:05Speaker 8: what they're saying.
- 27:05Speaker 1: To each other.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Okay, you have more intimate knowledge about rattle snakes and
- 27:11Speaker 2: maybe anyone else. So walk us through the average day
- 27:13Speaker 2: in the life of a rattlesnake that lives in Colorado,
- 27:16Speaker 2: which is the live cam that you guys have available
- 27:19Speaker 2: right now.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so.
- 27:23Speaker 8: These sites that we're watching are dens in that there
- 27:25Speaker 8: are places where the snakes are hibernating throughout the winter,
- 27:28Speaker 8: but now that we're getting into summer, it's turning into
- 27:31Speaker 8: a rookery. So the snakes that we're watching right now
- 27:33Speaker 8: are actually pregnant females who are going to stay here
- 27:35Speaker 8: for the entire summer until they give birth later in
- 27:37Speaker 8: the year. And right about now it is starting to
- 27:40Speaker 8: hit the rocks. Things are warming up, so they're going
- 27:43Speaker 8: to start to emerge in these rocks and basking the
- 27:46Speaker 8: sun to warm up their internal temperature. And the really
- 27:50Speaker 8: cool thing is that these snakes, because they're not leaving
- 27:52Speaker 8: the dam, they don't have access to any standing water,
- 27:55Speaker 8: and so whenever it rains, they're really thirsty. They come
- 27:59Speaker 8: out and they flatten themselves out like a saucer, and
- 28:02Speaker 8: they'll actually drink the water off of their backs. So
- 28:06Speaker 8: sometimes too, we'll see predators come through, like magpies trying
- 28:09Speaker 8: to eat the baby rattlesnakes, and so there can be
- 28:13Speaker 8: a lot of drama that ensues with.
- 28:14Speaker 2: You then tell us about some of the names the
- 28:17Speaker 2: personality traits that these rattlesnakes have, and do rattlesnakes ever
- 28:21Speaker 2: show up that you're not familiar.
- 28:22Speaker 8: With all the time. So there are dozens, if not
- 28:27Speaker 8: hundreds of adult battlesnakes that are using the site, and
- 28:31Speaker 8: so it's impossible for me to keep track of all
- 28:33Speaker 8: of them. And just imagine when each female gets worth
- 28:36Speaker 8: to eight pups in August, right, that number increases by
- 28:40Speaker 8: an order of magnitude. So it's really hard to know
- 28:42Speaker 8: who's all there. But the ones that we see the
- 28:46Speaker 8: most often are actually named by YouTube viewers. So if
- 28:50Speaker 8: someone's watching and they see a snake a couple of
- 28:52Speaker 8: times and they take screenshots, they can submit them to
- 28:55Speaker 8: us and get naming rights to that snake.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And so some of them.
- 28:59Speaker 8: There's one who's a really charismatic male named Thor, and
- 29:03Speaker 8: he's been sticking around. He's really desperate to find a mate.
- 29:07Speaker 8: We see him courting a lot of females. He's even
- 29:09Speaker 8: courted a couple of males, but we've never observed successful copulation.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 29:14Speaker 8: And some of the things too, are named after people's
- 29:17Speaker 8: moms and dogs, and so they have really cute names
- 29:20Speaker 8: to sometimes noodle names, you know, lasagna and ramen. So
- 29:25Speaker 8: it's kind of a really fun thing. And you're seeing
- 29:27Speaker 8: right now all these snakes kind of slithering out checking
- 29:30Speaker 8: out each other. I can actually see that that's Thor
- 29:33Speaker 8: in the bottom right there, because he has kind of
- 29:35Speaker 8: a roopy lip. He was bitten in the face by
- 29:38Speaker 8: an ant and ever since he was in there, the
- 29:42Speaker 8: venom must have caused lip paralysis or something, so he's
- 29:46Speaker 8: got kind of this droopy lip still. Okay, Yeah, it's
- 29:50Speaker 8: pretty amazing. You can see some of those babies in
- 29:52Speaker 8: there hanging out with him as well.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You told us that Thor is charismatic, but it's because
- 29:58Speaker 2: he is so desperate to mate with the other snakes.
- 30:00Speaker 2: I'm amused by that description. What's the camera setup? Like
- 30:04Speaker 2: case hunters, we're really familiar with trail cameras, but I
- 30:06Speaker 2: assume the technology used now is way beyond that.
- 30:11Speaker 8: Yeah, so you're seeing the camera right now. It is
- 30:13Speaker 8: a axis security camera that is powered by two eight
- 30:17Speaker 8: foot solar panels, and then we have a big battery
- 30:20Speaker 8: bank that's.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Up there as well.
- 30:22Speaker 8: And so because this is totally off grid, we have
- 30:25Speaker 8: to use cellular streaming to get that to YouTube, and
- 30:29Speaker 8: so it's quite the operation to get that all up
- 30:31Speaker 8: and running. And we're actually just about to publish a
- 30:34Speaker 8: paper on the whole setup, because before this we were
- 30:37Speaker 8: kind of working on our own with how we were
- 30:39Speaker 8: going to figure this out, and so we had a
- 30:42Speaker 8: really great team of engineers here at cal Poly we're
- 30:44Speaker 8: able to put this together for us.
- 30:46Speaker 2: And has your team had any close calls with snakes
- 30:48Speaker 2: while setting up these cameras.
- 30:52Speaker 8: You know, as a snake biologist, I wouldn't characterize them
- 30:56Speaker 8: as such. So you know there are snakes, quite a
- 30:59Speaker 8: few of them there. When we go to set up
- 31:00Speaker 8: the camera. We went earlier in the year when few
- 31:03Speaker 8: of them would be out. Some of the snakes were
- 31:05Speaker 8: still out right and kind of doing their things, but
- 31:07Speaker 8: usually they try to get away from us. We always
- 31:10Speaker 8: make sure that we're wearing high boots right, so that
- 31:13Speaker 8: if we accidentally did stuff on u snake and and
- 31:15Speaker 8: see it, that would provide us some level of protection.
- 31:19Speaker 8: And also you got to kind of make sure what
- 31:21Speaker 8: you set down. So I went there last summer, and
- 31:24Speaker 8: you know, if you set down your backpack, I was
- 31:26Speaker 8: warned that a rattle snake might decide to make its
- 31:29Speaker 8: home right underneath there, and sure enough, that's exactly what happened.
- 31:31Speaker 8: One of them decided to coil up, and so we
- 31:33Speaker 8: just kind of moved the backpack gently and carefully and
- 31:37Speaker 8: got that out of the way.
- 31:38Speaker 2: You mentioned magpies, but what other animals show up on
- 31:41Speaker 2: these cameras near the dens.
- 31:44Speaker 8: Yeah, a lot of animals that your viewers might be
- 31:46Speaker 8: familiar with.
- 31:47Speaker 1: So we've seen.
- 31:49Speaker 8: Long shelled weasels, and there's a whole lot of wildlife
- 31:53Speaker 8: that we could see. But two really exciting ones that
- 31:57Speaker 8: we saw this past year were an elk came up
- 32:00Speaker 8: and actually put its face right in the camera and
- 32:02Speaker 8: checked it out, and then we saw a porcupine two
- 32:05Speaker 8: on the camera. So it's kind of a window into
- 32:07Speaker 8: all of the nature that you could see in this area.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Tell us about some of the highlights. What are the
- 32:12Speaker 2: best moments that your team is captured so far.
- 32:16Speaker 8: Yeah, Well, one of the amazing things is that we
- 32:18Speaker 8: can watch the snakes at night, and so that's when
- 32:21Speaker 8: we saw those other animals. But also it's a lot
- 32:25Speaker 8: of times when the snakes are getting birth, and so
- 32:28Speaker 8: last year we got to watch two pregnant females give
- 32:30Speaker 8: birth live to their pups on camera and zoom right
- 32:33Speaker 8: in see the snakes pop their head out of their
- 32:36Speaker 8: amniotic sac for the first time. You can see the placentas.
- 32:39Speaker 8: It's all like right there in really high definition, and
- 32:45Speaker 8: we can look so close at the snakes even that
- 32:47Speaker 8: we can see bugs, and you might not think that
- 32:50Speaker 8: bugs are that interesting, but we noticed these mosquito looking
- 32:53Speaker 8: things kind of dancing on the snakes, and we didn't
- 32:56Speaker 8: know what they were. But when we contacted an entomologist
- 32:58Speaker 8: who studied flies, he told us that they were these
- 33:01Speaker 8: psychoded flies that were actually looked like they were recording
- 33:07Speaker 8: females so that the female the male flies don't eat,
- 33:11Speaker 8: but the females feed on blood, and so that the
- 33:13Speaker 8: males were doing like a dance trying to lure the
- 33:16Speaker 8: female flies to mate with them on the battlesnakes, which
- 33:20Speaker 8: you know, there's no fly cameras, right, So but if
- 33:23Speaker 8: we can zoom in really well on this, it's providing
- 33:26Speaker 8: a window to other people who are just it in
- 33:28Speaker 8: totally different things too.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and tell folks how they can support this work
- 33:31Speaker 2: and how they can watch the rattlecam.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:35Speaker 8: So you can learn more about us at battlecam dot org.
- 33:38Speaker 8: And there we have a donate page where you can
- 33:40Speaker 8: support our education programs and research and it also links
- 33:44Speaker 8: right live to our YouTube. So project rattlecam is is
- 33:46Speaker 8: the name of our YouTube channel where you can go
- 33:48Speaker 8: and watch anytime.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and I checked in four or five times this
- 33:51Speaker 2: week and preparing for the interview. Every time I open
- 33:54Speaker 2: it up there were rattlesnakes on the camera. I was
- 33:56Speaker 2: very impressed. It's it's twenty four to seven action on
- 33:59Speaker 2: those live cams.
- 34:01Speaker 8: It's pretty amazing. We had a camera set up in California,
- 34:04Speaker 8: and the densities of snakes here just aren't the same.
- 34:06Speaker 8: You know, we might see one to day or something
- 34:08Speaker 8: like that, but this is a really impressive site where yeah,
- 34:12Speaker 8: basically you can always see a snake.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:13Speaker 2: And it feels more intimate too, because when I go
- 34:17Speaker 2: look at like a live bald eagle cam, there's fifty
- 34:20Speaker 2: thousand people watching. When I look at your rattlesnake camera,
- 34:22Speaker 2: there's like twenty five people watching. So we need more
- 34:26Speaker 2: shine on the rattlesnakes. Turn off the bald eagle cams,
- 34:30Speaker 2: go check out these rookeries that they have a live
- 34:32Speaker 2: look at. Thanks for joining us, and thanks for creating
- 34:35Speaker 2: a special way for people to interact with wildlife.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Thanks so much. It's my pleasure.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Randall. I saw you making a lot of faces over here.
- 34:44Speaker 4: Not a big snake guy, yeah, not a big snake guy. Serpents.
- 34:48Speaker 4: Give me the hebgb's I'm sure there's other folks out
- 34:51Speaker 4: there that feel similarly.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Me too.
- 34:53Speaker 2: I get a cold shiver anytime I see when it
- 34:55Speaker 2: can be the most harmless small snake. I was just
- 34:59Speaker 2: mushroom hung a week ago, came across four of them.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Every time I just like sends a chill from my ankle.
- 35:05Speaker 1: To my back.
- 35:06Speaker 4: Yeah, I hate it, hate it, hate it.
- 35:09Speaker 2: All right, we're having the show anything to him though,
- 35:11Speaker 2: you know, I'm very excited for this. I get plenty
- 35:15Speaker 2: of exposure. That's not the answer.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Good touches something in my deep caveman brain.
- 35:20Speaker 2: We're gonna get some listener feedback. I'm very excited about
- 35:23Speaker 2: this because it's all for Phil.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Phil.
- 35:25Speaker 2: What do we got?
- 35:25Speaker 1: Oh boy?
- 35:27Speaker 6: Uh?
- 35:28Speaker 3: First one, let's see, let's starts. It's warm, warm people
- 35:32Speaker 3: up here. I think I had one there.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Let's Fill's favorite band? Someone asked, Oh, yeah, my favorite band.
- 35:41Speaker 3: It's pretty close between Radiohead and an indie folk band
- 35:45Speaker 3: from Portland called The Decembris. I love them dearly. Colin
- 35:49Speaker 3: Malloy is a Montana native. The lead singer is also
- 35:52Speaker 3: an author, and their songs are nerdy literary storytelling set
- 35:59Speaker 3: to as music.
- 36:00Speaker 2: How many times have you seen Radiohead Live.
- 36:02Speaker 3: Radio had only once. They don't come here very often.
- 36:04Speaker 3: I saw them on the n Rainbows tour in eight
- 36:08Speaker 3: and it was incredible. I've seen I've seen The Decembrist
- 36:12Speaker 3: probably a dozen times though, because they around the West
- 36:15Speaker 3: Coast and and Montana.
- 36:17Speaker 2: All right, Phil, give us some more.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Phil, Let's see this is specifically for this one guy.
- 36:21Speaker 3: I'm sure have you played Expedition thirty three yet? If so,
- 36:23Speaker 3: what do we think? The answer is? Yes, I beat it.
- 36:25Speaker 3: It rules my game of the year so far.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Wow. Phil.
- 36:29Speaker 3: Kingdom Hearts Guy. For those of you who don't know,
- 36:32Speaker 3: Kingdom Hearts is a Japanese action RPG game that melds
- 36:35Speaker 3: that was like a multiversal project that mixed the worlds
- 36:38Speaker 3: of Final Fantasy and Disney IP. It seemed insane at
- 36:41Speaker 3: the time. I was obsessed with this game.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Aren't they unlike the twentieth edition?
- 36:45Speaker 7: Now?
- 36:46Speaker 3: Yeah, there's been many spinoffs, each one more insane and
- 36:49Speaker 3: preposterous than than the last season.
- 36:51Speaker 1: It's still on.
- 36:51Speaker 4: There's commercials for during the NBA playoffs.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I don't think so. I don't know what they have
- 36:57Speaker 2: commercials for.
- 36:58Speaker 4: Lebron does a commercial? Okay, game on a phone.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I was.
- 37:01Speaker 3: I was so obsessed with this game. It came out
- 37:03Speaker 3: on my seventh grade picture day. I brought the I
- 37:06Speaker 3: brought the case to my school and asked if I
- 37:08Speaker 3: could hold it up in my school picture and they
- 37:09Speaker 3: said no, and I will devastate it. Phil, I hyped
- 37:13Speaker 3: you for GTA six, pretty hyped. I really enjoy the
- 37:16Speaker 3: GTA games and I but I never get into online.
- 37:18Speaker 3: I play the campaign, the story mode, I have a
- 37:20Speaker 3: great time. It's it's a blast, a lot of fun,
- 37:22Speaker 3: and then I put it away.
- 37:24Speaker 2: These are great. Give us some more films.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Okay, uh, quick hitters love it?
- 37:28Speaker 1: Oh boy?
- 37:29Speaker 3: I think I saw one that was like death Row Meal.
- 37:32Speaker 3: I might have not started that one. But death Row
- 37:34Speaker 3: Meal simple just a really good fish and chips with
- 37:38Speaker 3: a tartar sauce and malt and malt vinegar and a
- 37:41Speaker 3: multi beer, uh preferably. But I'm I'm really not picky.
- 37:45Speaker 3: I had I'm not pick pit picky with who fish
- 37:48Speaker 3: at all?
- 37:48Speaker 2: Who does good fish and chips? And Bozeman?
- 37:51Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, not not a lot. I'd say, like
- 37:53Speaker 3: the Bocus is solid. I don't know if you guys
- 37:56Speaker 3: have any of any tis the Boccus is like my
- 37:58Speaker 3: number one go to in in Bozeman.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Is it goot Lawn? Is that the German like their
- 38:05Speaker 2: fish and chip?
- 38:06Speaker 3: I haven't had it, but I love the idea of
- 38:07Speaker 3: having it there because that you can get the big
- 38:09Speaker 3: german German steins of beer. There's a couple more, Phil,
- 38:13Speaker 3: What game are you playing right now? I just played
- 38:16Speaker 3: Death Stranding in anticipation of Death Stranding two coming out
- 38:20Speaker 3: later this month. But also I was telling the boys
- 38:22Speaker 3: in here before we started, I have an unboxed Nintendo
- 38:26Speaker 3: switch to upstairs in my office and we can just
- 38:28Speaker 3: turn the whole Q and A session into an unboxing
- 38:29Speaker 3: video if you guys want to, Uh, let's let's let's
- 38:40Speaker 3: let's call it there.
- 38:41Speaker 2: If he was going to have to share his switch
- 38:44Speaker 2: to with those Torp children he has, what was your answer, Phil? No?
- 38:48Speaker 3: They they all they got their own switches for Christmas,
- 38:51Speaker 3: and part of that was so when the Switch two
- 38:54Speaker 3: came out it could be mostly mine.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Yeah, good parenting advice there from Phil.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:59Speaker 3: And I'll do one one actual question for meat eater fans,
- 39:03Speaker 3: And because the honest is here, Odie the Good Shepherd asks,
- 39:06Speaker 3: how's mingus doing? And how's this training coming along? Kind
- 39:09Speaker 3: regards on the other side of the pond out of
- 39:12Speaker 3: Rotterdam in another ONLD.
- 39:13Speaker 4: That's a hell of a port. Yeah, a lot of traffic.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Yeah, what do they mostly move through there?
- 39:19Speaker 4: Whatever? Just shipping.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Okay, Mingus is doing it, doing great. Uh, he's kind
- 39:27Speaker 1: of trained up. My main mentor says that Mingus is
- 39:31Speaker 1: as much of a lion dog as he's ever going
- 39:33Speaker 1: to be, and he's not going to get any better.
- 39:36Speaker 1: But he's great right now. He does his thing. So yeah,
- 39:39Speaker 1: we're we're having fun. Season's over, so we're you know,
- 39:43Speaker 1: Mingus is waiting for December first.
- 39:45Speaker 2: At this point, how long will he be at the
- 39:47Speaker 2: mountain top of his like best? I don't know lion hunting.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Did they start to go downhill at some point? I
- 39:53Speaker 2: suppose their physical fitness?
- 39:55Speaker 1: Yeah, But I think that the you know, the older
- 39:57Speaker 1: the dogs get, maybe they get more efficient, Maybe it
- 40:00Speaker 1: gets you know, smarter about how they run tracks. I thing,
- 40:04Speaker 1: this doesn't seem to be a real genius, So I
- 40:08Speaker 1: don't know if that's gonna happen with him. But I
- 40:11Speaker 1: don't know. He's only four now. I guess there'll be
- 40:14Speaker 1: five this fall, So I imagine he's got at least
- 40:19Speaker 1: that many more good years in his prime.
- 40:22Speaker 2: All right, moving on, Our next segment is Meat Eater
- 40:25Speaker 2: Movie Club. This week we're reviewing the twenty twenty two
- 40:28Speaker 2: comedy Hundreds of Beavers.
- 40:38Speaker 4: I've just passed out a few scripts. Your lines are highlighted, Corey,
- 40:43Speaker 4: if you'll begin.
- 40:44Speaker 3: Oh okay, Oh hold on, Corey, I gotta turn your
- 40:46Speaker 3: mic on here.
- 40:47Speaker 2: They did not know about this was that you were
- 40:50Speaker 2: you were intentionally leaving this at this very moment.
- 40:52Speaker 4: Yeah, this is why I was so concerned that the
- 40:54Speaker 4: printer was working for me earlier. Perfect. So Corey, Yeah,
- 40:59Speaker 4: your lines are highlighted.
- 41:00Speaker 5: Am I on?
- 41:00Speaker 1: Phil, You're on.
- 41:01Speaker 3: And also, for those of you wondering this, these other
- 41:03Speaker 3: man sitting at the table, is he's Jake. He's gonna
- 41:06Speaker 3: be He's our newest addition to the podcast team. He's
- 41:08Speaker 3: gonna be doing some stuff for Radio Live after they're
- 41:12Speaker 3: starting at the end of the month. So Hi, Hi Jake. Anyway, Corey,
- 41:16Speaker 3: go ahead.
- 41:17Speaker 6: The setting is the podcast studio Meat Eater, Headquarters, Bozeman, Montana.
- 41:22Speaker 1: It's eleven one eight.
- 41:24Speaker 4: No, no, you're supposed to read it as if it's
- 41:27Speaker 4: before the show. Just read it as written.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Jesus, A lot of work put into this.
- 41:31Speaker 6: It's ten twenty eight am on Thursday, June fifth, thirty
- 41:34Speaker 6: two minutes before the recording of Meat Eater Radio Live
- 41:37Speaker 6: Episode forty one.
- 41:40Speaker 4: Hey, good morning Randall, Good morning Phil the Engineer. Do
- 41:42Speaker 4: you have all your jingles lined up for the show?
- 41:45Speaker 1: Yes?
- 41:45Speaker 3: All set on that front. Are you ready for me
- 41:47Speaker 3: to eater Movie Club today? I think the whole movie
- 41:50Speaker 3: club segment has played out. My monologues just get longer
- 41:53Speaker 3: and longer. The tone has gotten darker and darker. The
- 41:56Speaker 3: references are just too obscure. I think the jokes run
- 41:59Speaker 3: it course, it's tired, and my heart's just not in
- 42:02Speaker 3: it anymore. Well, at least we've got a great film
- 42:05Speaker 3: to discuss today, right. I saw that the movie you've
- 42:07Speaker 3: selected for this week as a score of ninety seven
- 42:09Speaker 3: percent on Rotten Tomatoes. What's it called, hundreds of Beavers?
- 42:12Speaker 4: Yes, that's exactly right, hundreds of Beavers twenty twenty two,
- 42:16Speaker 4: directed by Mike Cheslick and starring Ryland Bricks and Coal Tews.
- 42:20Speaker 4: And yeah, I was a little surprised by that Rotten
- 42:23Speaker 4: Tomatoes score, as well as the critical acclaim I saw online.
- 42:28Speaker 3: Why so, Well, I just I'm not even sure what
- 42:31Speaker 3: to make of the film. It was about trapping right loosely.
- 42:36Speaker 4: Well, no, it is in the same way that Space
- 42:39Speaker 4: Jam is about basketball, or maybe just a little less
- 42:42Speaker 4: than that. There's a man who begins as a drunkard,
- 42:45Speaker 4: something to do with apples. It's also very cold out,
- 42:48Speaker 4: and he catches some fish with his fingers, and then
- 42:50Speaker 4: he spends much of the film getting hurt while trying
- 42:52Speaker 4: to catch critters of all kinds and increasingly elaborate traps
- 42:55Speaker 4: and schemes. Half the time his plans backfire spectacular but
- 43:00Speaker 4: large men in furry like beaver costumes are killed and skinned. Yes,
- 43:04Speaker 4: and the plot does involve the accumulation of bodies of
- 43:07Speaker 4: dead beaver men. But then the beavers hold a Soviet
- 43:10Speaker 4: style show trial for the lead character before attempting to
- 43:13Speaker 4: skin him and make a coat out of him. And
- 43:15Speaker 4: there's a weird rocket ship at the end. It's partially animated.
- 43:19Speaker 4: There's sort of a weird video game like quality to
- 43:21Speaker 4: the whole thing. Ah, maybe it is more like Space
- 43:23Speaker 4: Jam than I thought. And the whole thing's in black
- 43:26Speaker 4: and white. It's just a lot of weird stuff.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 43:30Speaker 4: The chat might be disappointed with this segment today, but
- 43:32Speaker 4: at least it's not because they had to sit through
- 43:34Speaker 4: yet another heavy handed film analysis in Migrating Monotone delivery.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Oh man, wow, yikes, were there any highlights?
- 43:44Speaker 4: Well, the thing that immediately comes to mind is the
- 43:46Speaker 4: sound design. Absolutely fantastic. Lots of rattles and crashes and
- 43:50Speaker 4: whistles and bonks. Brought me right back to the golden
- 43:53Speaker 4: age of Tinseltown. Above and beyond that, I guess I
- 43:56Speaker 4: just admire the commitment of the whole vision.
- 44:00Speaker 3: The commitment to what exactly it's a comedy right, Well.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I suppose it is, but it's not that simple.
- 44:07Speaker 4: It's more like a chaotic, avant garde comedic experiment that
- 44:10Speaker 4: defies the conventions of mainstream filmmaking in the twenty first century.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Yet at the same time, it's clearly in conversation with
- 44:16Speaker 4: a variety of cinematic touch points. It's got Slapstick's sensibility,
- 44:20Speaker 4: like three Stooges and Merry Melodies. We see traces of
- 44:23Speaker 4: the stop motion aesthetics of South Park and tonally, there's
- 44:26Speaker 4: a little bit of bert Ives Christmas specials. On top
- 44:29Speaker 4: of that, the dramatic arc of the film is basically
- 44:31Speaker 4: just a simplified version of the best eight and a
- 44:33Speaker 4: half minutes of Home Alone. That is, the first Home Alone,
- 44:36Speaker 4: the one where mccullay Culkin's character is actually alone at
- 44:39Speaker 4: home and not at the Plaza Hotel in New York
- 44:41Speaker 4: City of course. Yeah, and throughout the whole film, the
- 44:44Speaker 4: main character just grunts and makes faces surrounded by actors
- 44:48Speaker 4: and animal costumes that are eerily reminiscent of the rabbit
- 44:51Speaker 4: figure in Donnie Darko. I also have to point out,
- 44:53Speaker 4: only because it bothered me so much, that there's a
- 44:56Speaker 4: brief nod in one scene to that terrible dogs playing poker,
- 44:59Speaker 4: painting soft and displayed in suburban wreck rooms in American
- 45:02Speaker 4: casual dining chains with friendly atmospheres, like, for example, Applebee's,
- 45:06Speaker 4: TGI Fridays, Oh Charlie's and Chili's, or Benigans, But that's
- 45:10Speaker 4: a more obscure reference because there aren't many Benigans around
- 45:13Speaker 4: in these days since the parent company, Metromedia Restaurant Group,
- 45:16Speaker 4: was forced into an involuntary Chapter seven bankruptcy in two
- 45:19Speaker 4: thousand and eight. According to Benigans, dot Com. Only six
- 45:22Speaker 4: full service, free standing locations remain open in the US WOW,
- 45:26Speaker 4: two in Texas, two and Iowa, one in North Dakota,
- 45:28Speaker 4: and one in Illinois.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Although don't quote me.
- 45:30Speaker 4: On that because I don't know if those are corporate
- 45:32Speaker 4: locations or if that's inclusive of franchises. Regardless, it's a
- 45:36Speaker 4: striking number, considering at one point there were more than
- 45:38Speaker 4: one hundred and fifty corporate Benegans locations.
- 45:40Speaker 3: My goodness, that's interesting to learn about how few Benegans
- 45:43Speaker 3: there are in the United States. I guess I'd noticed
- 45:46Speaker 3: that their footprint had shrunk considerably since I was younger,
- 45:48Speaker 3: but I didn't quite know the backstory.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Yeah, but a growing part of the business now is
- 45:52Speaker 4: a derivative quick serve, fast casual concept, Benigan's on the
- 45:55Speaker 4: Fly that's geared more towards high traffic locations like food courts, airports,
- 45:59Speaker 4: arenas university campuses. They offer fresh, innovative selections, as well
- 46:03Speaker 4: as some customer favorites from the traditional Benigans menu, including
- 46:07Speaker 4: the Monte Cristo and the Turkey Tools spencer your laughing
- 46:12Speaker 4: stop stop.
- 46:14Speaker 3: I appreciate that information on Benegans on the Fly, which
- 46:17Speaker 3: I hadn't heard of until just now.
- 46:19Speaker 4: Looking to the future, the company has plans to expand
- 46:23Speaker 4: its already strong international presence, which includes multiple locations throughout
- 46:27Speaker 4: Central America, as well as two in ball Rain two
- 46:30Speaker 4: and Guitar two in Dubai, and curiously four in Cyprus.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Coming soon, there's a location in Pakistan two. These are
- 46:36Speaker 4: all full service locations, by the way, just like the
- 46:39Speaker 4: original Betigans. God damn it, I got sad tracked last
- 46:42Speaker 4: night prepping for this show by reading about the resurrection
- 46:45Speaker 4: of the Betgans. Brandon, I'm falling into the same trap again.
- 46:48Speaker 4: We can't get distracted, Phil, We've got to figure out
- 46:50Speaker 4: this movie club segment. Anyway, Back to the topic at hand,
- 46:53Speaker 4: Hundreds of Beavers also includes these surreal sequences where reality
- 46:57Speaker 4: just bends bends.
- 47:00Speaker 3: How picture this.
- 47:01Speaker 4: A wet piece of firewood is actually a log shaped pillow,
- 47:05Speaker 4: so our hero is able to wring it out like
- 47:06Speaker 4: a sponge. Or the fur trader spits his chaw of
- 47:09Speaker 4: tobacco towards a spittoon, and then the plug just curves
- 47:12Speaker 4: wildly through the air so it never lands in the
- 47:14Speaker 4: intended receptacle until the very end, symbolizing the resolution of
- 47:18Speaker 4: the conflict at the heart of the film. The physical
- 47:20Speaker 4: universe of hundreds of beavers makes no sense, but somehow
- 47:23Speaker 4: it works with its own hallucinogenic logic.
- 47:25Speaker 3: And this goes on for how long?
- 47:27Speaker 4: Well, I figured it would go on for about five minutes,
- 47:29Speaker 4: but it seems like it's going longer than that. No,
- 47:32Speaker 4: I mean the movie, oh, of course, an hour and
- 47:35Speaker 4: forty eight minutes. I checked my phone a lot, actually,
- 47:37Speaker 4: mostly reading about Bennigan's thinking we are surely near the end.
- 47:40Speaker 4: But no, the movie just kept going. More encounters with
- 47:43Speaker 4: people in animal suits, more elaborate failures, more falling in
- 47:46Speaker 4: the snow, more rolling in the snow, more grunting, and
- 47:48Speaker 4: more yelling.
- 47:49Speaker 3: Do you think Spencer and Giannis enjoyed it?
- 47:52Speaker 4: That's doubtful. I think it's too far out and left
- 47:54Speaker 4: field creatively, speaking for Spencer's taste, and you're honess, Well,
- 47:58Speaker 4: I know he appreciates good filmmaking and has a very
- 48:00Speaker 4: open minded sensibility, but I'm not sure even he can
- 48:03Speaker 4: make sense of whatever this is trying to be shit.
- 48:07Speaker 3: Sounds like movie Club might be a pretty tough segment.
- 48:09Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure Spencer's got ten or fifteen minutes dedicated
- 48:11Speaker 3: to it in the rerun of the show. The show
- 48:13Speaker 3: will be recording in less than an hour.
- 48:15Speaker 4: Don't worry, we can fill it out somehow. Too bad,
- 48:18Speaker 4: we can't include all of that good information about Bennigans.
- 48:21Speaker 4: That's fun pre show banter, but not exactly what the
- 48:23Speaker 4: radio live audience is tuning in for totally. The thing is,
- 48:27Speaker 4: I can't shake the feeling that there's something profoundly lovable
- 48:30Speaker 4: about the madness of this film, Like you've got to
- 48:32Speaker 4: admire an unshaking conviction to an absurd premise. You just
- 48:37Speaker 4: come up with something completely bonkers and take it all.
- 48:39Speaker 3: The way, so you respect it even if you don't
- 48:41Speaker 3: fully get it.
- 48:42Speaker 4: You know, the more I think about it, the more
- 48:44Speaker 4: I like it. Actually, I just love stuff that is
- 48:46Speaker 4: genuine in its weirdness. There's no cynicism, there's no winking
- 48:49Speaker 4: at the camera. There's just a bold, unadulterated fever dream
- 48:52Speaker 4: of a concept that doesn't shy away from the gaze
- 48:55Speaker 4: of the critic.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Well, what will you say on air? We're going live
- 48:58Speaker 3: at eleven.
- 48:59Speaker 4: I wasn't quite it's sure before this conversation, Phil, but
- 49:01Speaker 4: it's becoming clear and clear as we talk. There's an
- 49:04Speaker 4: interesting tension here. On the one hand, put yourselves in
- 49:06Speaker 4: the shoes of the makers of this film. You are
- 49:08Speaker 4: truly inspired by a creative concept, so over the top,
- 49:11Speaker 4: so wrapped up in its own bizarre vision, that you've
- 49:14Speaker 4: just got to run with it, and you can't half asset. Sure,
- 49:17Speaker 4: sometimes it might leave yours wondering what the hell was that,
- 49:19Speaker 4: But there's something joyful and beautiful in the deliberate insanity
- 49:22Speaker 4: of it all.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I get that.
- 49:25Speaker 4: On the other hand, if you're so committed to producing
- 49:27Speaker 4: something in keeping with your own comedic sensibilities, damn the viewer,
- 49:31Speaker 4: you run the risk of losing the audience's attention, maybe
- 49:34Speaker 4: even earning its resentment. And point is, at that point,
- 49:38Speaker 4: you're just doing it for your own amusement, completely for
- 49:40Speaker 4: your own amusement. And here's the big question. Is that
- 49:44Speaker 4: type of content just masturbatory, self indulgent on the part
- 49:47Speaker 4: of the artist film or is it a truer expression
- 49:50Speaker 4: of creative integrity that.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Well, geez, that's actually not a bad angle for movie club,
- 49:57Speaker 3: assuming you're still talking about the film.
- 50:00Speaker 4: Precisely, my friend, precisely.
- 50:03Speaker 6: End scene, Wow, fade to black, Thank you, audience goes nuts.
- 50:08Speaker 2: Yes they are. I gotta catch my breath. I didn't
- 50:13Speaker 2: have to read anything.
- 50:14Speaker 4: Oh man. I actually liked this movie more than I
- 50:18Speaker 4: made it seem. I started working on this about halfway
- 50:21Speaker 4: through when I wasn't sure when to make of it.
- 50:23Speaker 4: But at the end of it it won me over.
- 50:24Speaker 4: But I thought this was such a good bit that
- 50:26Speaker 4: I couldn't let it go.
- 50:27Speaker 3: Randall, I am glad you didn't. That was spectacular broken.
- 50:32Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Broke.
- 50:33Speaker 4: I told you someone was gonna cry in this building today.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Randall correctly predicted someone would cry, and I have laughing tears.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Thanks to Mogor for a very strange film.
- 50:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't know how we had not heard about
- 50:55Speaker 1: this film.
- 50:56Speaker 4: Well, it's very new.
- 50:57Speaker 2: It was.
- 50:57Speaker 4: It was only released and the two the star and
- 51:02Speaker 4: the director wrote it and they released it at a
- 51:05Speaker 4: film festival and then they I guess a studio attempted
- 51:09Speaker 4: to distribute it and they just wanted it to go
- 51:11Speaker 4: to like streaming platforms, and it.
- 51:12Speaker 2: Didn't even make it to streaming I think until like
- 51:14Speaker 2: twenty twenty four.
- 51:14Speaker 4: Yeah, or something like that.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought this movie was a lot of fun.
- 51:19Speaker 3: I think like Randall said in his in his commentary,
- 51:22Speaker 3: it's a little long in the tooth, but percent man,
- 51:25Speaker 3: so many creative gags like it was. I couldn't believe
- 51:29Speaker 3: just how much stuff was unexpected or genuinely funny. I'd
- 51:33Speaker 3: say that the jokes worked more than they didn't for me,
- 51:36Speaker 3: which is, you know, key to a good comedy.
- 51:38Speaker 2: Yeah, things I like, the music was great. To make
- 51:41Speaker 2: any movie on one hundred and fifty thousand dollars budget
- 51:43Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two is wildly impressive, so it felt
- 51:47Speaker 2: like it far exceeded that. It also felt like an
- 51:50Speaker 2: Adult Swim bumper from two thousand and six. And that's
- 51:53Speaker 2: a compliment because the weird on those bumpers. If you're familiar,
- 51:57Speaker 2: you know what I'm talking about. It's kind of limitless. Phil,
- 52:00Speaker 2: I imagine you were really no idea. I'm lost. Y,
- 52:02Speaker 2: you're a little old for that, Phil, explain.
- 52:05Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I mean it's kind of hard to explain.
- 52:07Speaker 3: But Adult Swim had kind of shorter programming, so they
- 52:10Speaker 3: would fill the just fill the space between shows with
- 52:14Speaker 3: these kind of like short films and and just stuff
- 52:18Speaker 3: that varied wildly. I think I think they just hired
- 52:20Speaker 3: different crazy creative people to make just these these weird bumpers,
- 52:24Speaker 3: like like Spencer said, this movie felt like one.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Of those to me, But you know, drug Out over
- 52:29Speaker 2: two hours, which I think was too long. Yeah, we're
- 52:32Speaker 2: in agreement there.
- 52:33Speaker 4: I had a line initially in my review where I said,
- 52:36Speaker 4: and I did have to cut quite a bit out
- 52:38Speaker 4: of this really.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:40Speaker 4: I had a line in my review where I said,
- 52:43Speaker 4: it seems like something I should watch and hold my
- 52:46Speaker 4: attention for about five to ten minutes on the internet,
- 52:49Speaker 4: and maybe ten to fifteen minutes if I was drinking. Yeah,
- 52:52Speaker 4: but like that's that's sort of it. But I liked
- 52:54Speaker 4: that they were just like, we're going to make a
- 52:55Speaker 4: two hour movie.
- 52:56Speaker 2: This, Yeah, and this this felt like something that AI
- 52:59Speaker 2: could not make, and that's refreshing in a world that
- 53:02Speaker 2: feels like it's being swallowed by AI in this medium.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Uh.
- 53:07Speaker 2: The movie got a real laugh for me around minute
- 53:10Speaker 2: one hundred, when the daughter gets on a stripper pool
- 53:12Speaker 2: that was unexpected, which most things in this movie are.
- 53:15Speaker 2: And then shortly after that a word gets bleeped, which
- 53:17Speaker 2: was also wildly amusing because there's no dialogue in the movie,
- 53:21Speaker 2: so a bleep felt genuinely out of nowhere. I think
- 53:23Speaker 2: bleeps are always funny. You could you could serve me
- 53:25Speaker 2: a bleep in any show or movie and I'm gonna
- 53:28Speaker 2: laugh at it. But I got a real, real giggle
- 53:30Speaker 2: when that happened. Yeah, Yanni, did you watch this with anyone?
- 53:34Speaker 2: You recording the idea of watching with your daughters and
- 53:37Speaker 2: I don't. I don't know if you went through with
- 53:38Speaker 2: it or not.
- 53:39Speaker 1: I did, but we started a little late last night,
- 53:42Speaker 1: which means two things. One, we couldn't finish it. Kids
- 53:46Speaker 1: had to get to bed for school, and I fell
- 53:48Speaker 1: asleep for many parts of the first half. Been a
- 53:55Speaker 1: long day, short night the night before Little Sauna. You know,
- 53:58Speaker 1: I wasn't It wasn't. It wasn't really like, I wasn't
- 54:00Speaker 1: set up to make it through a movie. But I
- 54:02Speaker 1: kept waking up at giggles. So every time I wake up,
- 54:05Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I can't be too.
- 54:07Speaker 2: Your giggles are your daughter's giggles.
- 54:09Speaker 1: So my daughters are giggling at these, at the jokes
- 54:11Speaker 1: that you know are slap you know, slapstick funny. I
- 54:16Speaker 1: did finish. I probably watched maybe seventy minutes of it
- 54:20Speaker 1: this morning, so I got to pick it up at
- 54:23Speaker 1: the important part. You know, I got the gist of
- 54:25Speaker 1: ith it. You guys are, We're all saying the same thing,
- 54:29Speaker 1: but you have to give it almost thirty minutes just
- 54:32Speaker 1: to sort of be like, oh, okay, I get it.
- 54:34Speaker 2: I'm immersed in.
- 54:36Speaker 1: I'm in now, because at first you're just like, wait
- 54:38Speaker 1: a minute, what I thought.
- 54:40Speaker 4: The first thirty minutes could have been a five minute
- 54:42Speaker 4: set up. Sure, and then it just begins with him.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Well, you could truncate the whole movie.
- 54:47Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah, yeah, the movie should be twenty five minutes. Yeah,
- 54:50Speaker 4: but I mean the Beaver, the Man, the Giant Man
- 54:53Speaker 4: made out of Beaver's great The Beaver Show Trial was fantastic.
- 54:59Speaker 4: The I also liked when she's skinning the animals, like
- 55:04Speaker 4: she is a legit little kit there of big curved,
- 55:09Speaker 4: fleshing knives and stuff like that. And then the one
- 55:12Speaker 4: I think it's the raccoon that she skins, she begins,
- 55:16Speaker 4: I think she does something to its head, but then
- 55:17Speaker 4: she takes the arm and like breaks the joint. I
- 55:21Speaker 4: thought that was hilarious.
- 55:22Speaker 2: This was filmed in Wisconsin and Michigan, I think so.
- 55:25Speaker 2: I assumed they're from that part.
- 55:26Speaker 4: Of the world.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so they like have some familiarity.
- 55:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:29Speaker 2: I mean it didn't seem subject like, it.
- 55:30Speaker 4: Seemed like people that knew what they were talking about.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I was gonna say, like, they don't give up on
- 55:37Speaker 1: the slapstick. Like just when you think like they can't
- 55:40Speaker 1: come up with something, you're like, oh, he just sneezed
- 55:43Speaker 1: and this giant snot thing turned into an icicle and
- 55:46Speaker 1: then killed something and the caster.
- 55:48Speaker 4: The castor mounds and stuff.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, but they also don't give up on keeping
- 55:53Speaker 1: like the trapping aspect legitimate. Yeah, Like like the scene
- 55:59Speaker 1: where he's I think he first gets his the leg
- 56:03Speaker 1: holds and he's like chucking him out on the ice
- 56:05Speaker 1: and he chucks it one time and it's not proper
- 56:08Speaker 1: and then it's upside down and he has to do
- 56:10Speaker 1: it three times to you know, do it properly. You
- 56:13Speaker 1: could have just as easily, Yeah, chucked it out once
- 56:16Speaker 1: and the trap could have caught any animal right, no
- 56:20Speaker 1: matter how it came out there. But they were like,
- 56:22Speaker 1: oh no, it has to flow out to this fake
- 56:24Speaker 1: beaver right side up because otherwise, you know, the viewers
- 56:28Speaker 1: are going to get mad that the trap caught this
- 56:30Speaker 1: fake Beaver. Yeah, when the trap was upside down, I know.
- 56:32Speaker 4: There's like there's like attention to detailing it that I
- 56:36Speaker 4: was won over by the end of it. I still
- 56:39Speaker 4: if I had a director's cut, shave about sixty one
- 56:43Speaker 4: minutes off it. Yeah, but uh yeah, you got to
- 56:47Speaker 4: appreciate just going for it.
- 56:49Speaker 2: A couple other things I liked is they obviously did
- 56:50Speaker 2: their own stunts, and there's at one point where he's
- 56:52Speaker 2: like pushing a wooden box and then he falls into
- 56:55Speaker 2: the wooden box and he gets out, he falls into
- 56:56Speaker 2: it again and he nailed that part like that that
- 56:59Speaker 2: was done really well. I also liked the idea of
- 57:02Speaker 2: the Beaver dam is like a damn that is run
- 57:05Speaker 2: by the Army Corps of Engineers.
- 57:07Speaker 4: Yeah, matter, a massive hydroelectric damn.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Things I didn't like, Yeah too long. I checked my
- 57:13Speaker 2: phone a lot, and I was like, it's got to
- 57:15Speaker 2: be about over and it wasn't. The other thing this
- 57:18Speaker 2: isn't necessarily something I didn't like about the movie maybe
- 57:20Speaker 2: just like the indie movie industry, is that this movie
- 57:24Speaker 2: was showered with awards and I'm like, really, yeah, this
- 57:28Speaker 2: was worthy of being nominated. I don't know, like fifty
- 57:30Speaker 2: times and winning twenty times. This could not have been
- 57:34Speaker 2: one of the greatest things that humans produced in cinema
- 57:37Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two, even in the niche indie scene.
- 57:41Speaker 2: I was like mildly turned off by that. When I
- 57:43Speaker 2: saw afterwards, I was like, I can't believe that people
- 57:46Speaker 2: felt like this was one of the best things from
- 57:48Speaker 2: that year.
- 57:49Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, I feel like the movie didn't affect me
- 57:53Speaker 4: in any way. I went through it, I walked away
- 57:56Speaker 4: and I was like, that's what I watched for an hour,
- 57:58Speaker 4: and yeah, I don't know.
- 57:59Speaker 3: I think I was marveling at the creativity more than
- 58:02Speaker 3: more than anything, because I think I think that was unparalleled.
- 58:05Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I respect it. I respect it. I mean
- 58:09Speaker 4: a strange, strange concept.
- 58:10Speaker 1: But is there is there a message?
- 58:16Speaker 2: I think their message was just like, look at the
- 58:18Speaker 2: limitless weird that we can do two hours, and we
- 58:21Speaker 2: can we can revive a form of comedy that has
- 58:26Speaker 2: been lost with audio because it was it was like
- 58:29Speaker 2: three stooges.
- 58:30Speaker 4: I had another line in here, and it was basically
- 58:33Speaker 4: just uh, this was more an experiment to see if
- 58:38Speaker 4: they could do this, like incorporate these different elements, like
- 58:42Speaker 4: what if we did this, What if we did this?
- 58:44Speaker 4: And then they just made the whole film without asking
- 58:46Speaker 4: if it was something they should actually do.
- 58:48Speaker 3: This is like a classic hero's journey.
- 58:50Speaker 4: I also I cut another line out.
- 58:53Speaker 3: I had an arc.
- 58:54Speaker 2: The parent company, the parent.
- 58:55Speaker 4: Company for Bennegan's also owned Ponderosa Steakhouse, which explains where
- 59:02Speaker 4: Pondero's a steakhouse, or as we called it when we
- 59:04Speaker 4: used to go there for the lunch buffet.
- 59:06Speaker 2: Sweet Lady p did you love Bennigans? I've been to one,
- 59:11Speaker 2: not really I.
- 59:12Speaker 4: Remember going to one. There's a South Park episode where
- 59:14Speaker 4: Butters really wants to go to Bennigan's. But I was
- 59:17Speaker 4: I was doing the thing about the dogs playing poker,
- 59:21Speaker 4: and I was trying to come up with another, like
- 59:24Speaker 4: few casual chains, and I saw Benigan's and I was like,
- 59:27Speaker 4: what the hell happened to Bennigan's.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Now we know?
- 59:30Speaker 4: And now we know, and it does seem like there's
- 59:33Speaker 4: a very committed couple in Texas who now own it.
- 59:37Speaker 4: There's been some restructuring and they're committed to restoring the brand,
- 59:41Speaker 4: which is cool because I think it's a real legacy
- 59:43Speaker 4: brand in the world of American restaurants.
- 59:46Speaker 1: I'd never heard of it.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Told I don't know that I've ever been in the
- 59:50Speaker 2: same city as one.
- 59:52Speaker 4: Well, next time you go to the Middle East man,
- 59:56Speaker 4: he'll be surrounded by him.
- 59:59Speaker 2: My big takeaway this would be the perfect movie if
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: you're a stoner college kid to watch on a Thursday night.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I wouldn't wouldn't cancel weekend plans. I don't think this
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: is uh, you know, something you dedicate a Friday or
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Saturday too. But if you're a stoner college kid, do
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: what stoner college kids do and then put this on
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: tonight and you'll have like a wonderful two hours.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I think.
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: Yeah, anything else.
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: That's all I got. Uh, thanks again to Moor. I
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: feel like the segment ran too long and I played
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: a role in that, so I apologize.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: I really enjoyed it.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Spencer, Can I suggest a switch around.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: We're gonna skip ahead to one minute Fishing. Yeah, all right.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Our next segment is one minute Fishing.
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: Do I feel lucky?
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: We'll do you dunk, go ahead, make my cast.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: One minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a fish,
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred dollars
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: donation to a conservation group. This week, our anger is
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: Christine Fisher, who you'll remember from last week's episode. She's
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: on Chickamauga Lake in Tennessee and fishing for a donation
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: to the first Wisconsin Chapter of Muskies, Inc. Christine, Welcome
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: to the show.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: Hey guys, how's it going?
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Doing good?
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: Last week Christine you joined us. You were in Oklahoma
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: pre fishing for the twenty twenty five bass Master Kayak
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Series at Lake ten Killer. There were one hundred and
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: thirty seven anglers in the field. Tell folks how you
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: did well, y'all.
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: I don't know if it was not meted or what,
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: but I ended up taking the big w my first
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: best master win and it was the first win by
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: a female and bess master of history.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Hell yeah, first place. Nice to congratulations Christine. First place
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: among one hundred and thirty seven anglers. That's awesome. Now
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: explain how a bass master.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: How many other females Christine were in this tournament?
- 1:01:54Speaker 7: I think this one was one of our highest attended
- 1:01:57Speaker 7: for females, and I think there were six of all.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Out of one hundred and thirty seven.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: That's great.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: Explain how a bass Master Kayak Series tournament is set
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: up and maybe different from other tournaments because the first
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: thing that jumps out to me when I look at
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: the results is that a fish's value is measured by
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: length instead of weight.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: No lost connection issues with Christine.
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: Be a length.
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: We have certified measuring boards that we use malasaf flows,
- 1:02:26Speaker 7: and then we have a unique identifier. It has to
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: be in the picture for every single one of our fish,
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: so they're GPS time damped. We have a first pass
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: in the last cast, and it's a pretty it's a
- 1:02:37Speaker 7: pretty techy little setup how they do it, and I
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: love it because there are you know, this has been
- 1:02:43Speaker 7: around for ten years, and early on there were a
- 1:02:46Speaker 7: lot of people that tried to kind of keat the
- 1:02:47Speaker 7: system by various ways, and it's dang near impossible.
- 1:02:52Speaker 5: To do that now, is awesome.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: Give me an example of how people would try to
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: cheat the system.
- 1:02:58Speaker 7: So we had a guy, I mean two, So we
- 1:03:00Speaker 7: had a guy about six seven years ago that was
- 1:03:03Speaker 7: cutting boards in half and then kind of bulling him
- 1:03:06Speaker 7: together so his fish looked like they were too more
- 1:03:09Speaker 7: than they were.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: It was absolutely insane.
- 1:03:13Speaker 7: There's been a couple of people that would take as
- 1:03:15Speaker 7: sharpie and try to mark up fish to where they
- 1:03:19Speaker 7: had different marks on them, but they are the same fish,
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: and then make the.
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: Tail, you know, not hit a quarter inch.
- 1:03:24Speaker 7: But now the app has people look for the same
- 1:03:27Speaker 7: fish because every pitch has very unique markings and lateral lines,
- 1:03:31Speaker 7: so they can't get away with that. And then we
- 1:03:33Speaker 7: had a guy in Texas actually that was cutting tails
- 1:03:36Speaker 7: and kept the tail of a fish in his pocket
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: and would lay it over this is a long time ago,
- 1:03:42Speaker 7: would lay it over the fish and put his hand
- 1:03:43Speaker 7: over it so you couldn't the tail looked like it
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: was like this long. Uh.
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: That was in a local tournament, so it was a little.
- 1:03:50Speaker 7: Local ones aren't as as rigid is I would think
- 1:03:53Speaker 7: the big national ones are, but we've we've learned a
- 1:03:56Speaker 7: lot in the last decade.
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: That's amazing. Every time I think tournament anglers can't cheat,
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: they figure out a new way to cheat. So I'm
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: very amused to hear that, now how far our tournament
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: kayak angler's traveling in a day.
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: You know, honestly, this is going to surprise a lot
- 1:04:12Speaker 7: of people because it's anywhere you know, you'll have people
- 1:04:14Speaker 7: that will stick within a mile, but I've covered it
- 1:04:18Speaker 7: up to fifteen to twenty.
- 1:04:19Speaker 5: Miles in one day.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: I would say the average is probably five to seven.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Man, what's your top speed if you just got to
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: get from point A to point B? What's your top
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: speed in that thing?
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: About six and a half. Very uh, A lot slower
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: than my ranger goes.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: No.
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Now, Lake ten Killer offers small mouth and large mouth,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: and the upper portion lake is very different from the
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: lower portion lake. So anglers have a lot of different
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: ways that they can find success or failure and approaches.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: Fishery tell us about your winning strategy.
- 1:04:54Speaker 7: Well, you know my strategy. I really wanted to fish
- 1:04:56Speaker 7: for points. You know, we we have an Angler of
- 1:04:58Speaker 7: the Year series, not if you for the championship. And
- 1:05:01Speaker 7: I only get to fish three and I didn't get
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: a drop event, so I was just going to go,
- 1:05:06Speaker 7: you know. I went and caught some some giant small
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: mouth down south, had a really good pattern, kind of
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: cut a four and a half pounds small mouth, a
- 1:05:12Speaker 7: couple three pounds small mouth, you know, a really good
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: fish from LA. But they were fairly obvious offshore spots,
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: and I knew with the big boat tournament and one
- 1:05:21Speaker 7: hundred and thirty seven kayakanglers. I actually did not touch
- 1:05:25Speaker 7: my what I would call my a my best water.
- 1:05:27Speaker 7: One time during the tournament, I went to an area
- 1:05:30Speaker 7: that I didn't I thought was going to get very overlooked,
- 1:05:32Speaker 7: had some quality fish.
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: I had to work a lot harder for him.
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: And there were only four people at my ramp, so
- 1:05:38Speaker 7: I thought I made a huge mistake that day I
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: got there, But it ended up working out fishing less
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: pressure of water, and uh it was cool because I
- 1:05:45Speaker 7: got to lock a big swim.
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: Bay in my hands basically bull days and did a
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: little bit of.
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: Late slipping on some steeper banks lead back to the
- 1:05:52Speaker 7: creeks on the on the first day as well.
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: But fishing that that overlooked water.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Was ste That's great. I read you say that your
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: two biggest fish of the tournament did not get in
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: the boat. What happened there?
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: Well, anytime, and if you got any listeners that are
- 1:06:08Speaker 7: swim bait people, you know in your swim bay fish
- 1:06:11Speaker 7: and sometimes they just don't make it to the boat.
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: And I had on three casts my first cast down
- 1:06:17Speaker 7: this little spot at the Alful Creek jumped off about
- 1:06:20Speaker 7: a three and a half pound small mouth. Two casts later,
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: I jumped off for a large mouth that would have
- 1:06:25Speaker 7: been big bass to the tournament. It was just over
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: five pounds, and the cameraman was on me, so he
- 1:06:31Speaker 7: has a segment of photos from start to finish, and
- 1:06:34Speaker 7: it was agonizing.
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: I had to kind of relive that. You know, in
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: those tournaments, you think you lose one of those big
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: fish and you're just like, well, you know that that
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: was the one that was the one.
- 1:06:44Speaker 7: I knew that I needed to probably get this thing
- 1:06:46Speaker 7: done so that, you know, it's really tough to stay
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: in it mentally after jumping off to big fish, But
- 1:06:52Speaker 7: you know what, when it's your time, it's your time,
- 1:06:54Speaker 7: and I guess that was my time to get it done.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: Anyway.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Yeah, now before we do one minute fishing today, tell
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: folks what happened after our one minute fishing segment ended
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: last week.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: Well, I caught three white bass in a row.
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: I swear it was y'all's music, Like that was a
- 1:07:11Speaker 7: tense minute of my life, like if we all get
- 1:07:14Speaker 7: inya or something just a little bit more too, because
- 1:07:17Speaker 7: I was freaking out with that minute. I caught three
- 1:07:20Speaker 7: fish in a row after that, so I was. I
- 1:07:23Speaker 7: felt pretty discouraged.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: Damn. All right. Well, I have a question though, Spencer,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: before we go there, Christine, if you keep on winning
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: and keep getting these big checks and you all of
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: a sudden you have enough money to buy one of
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: those big fancy boats, are you gonna switch from kayak
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: angling to just regular angling out of a fancy bass
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: boat or I'm asking what's the draw for kayak angling
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: and do you would you switch over to regular boat fishing.
- 1:07:50Speaker 7: Well, I actually did make this switch last year. I
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: have a Ranger Alpha two away and I'm fishing in
- 1:07:55Speaker 7: the most competitive boat rail and in the country. The
- 1:07:58Speaker 7: bast Master opens, so I do do that, and I
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: fished to this year, and I fish a couple women's
- 1:08:04Speaker 7: only boat tournaments. I won my first one earlier this
- 1:08:07Speaker 7: year just to kind of learn it, because honestly, the
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: boat was pretty intimidating for me.
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: But you know, I'll always be a kayak angler. I
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: always will.
- 1:08:15Speaker 7: I'm doing the boat thing to hopefully inspire more women
- 1:08:17Speaker 7: to get into fishing out of the boat, But I'm
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: a kayak angler because it just fosters such a deeper,
- 1:08:23Speaker 7: more intimate experience on the water for right, next to
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: the water.
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: It's quiet.
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: I can get back in these creeks and these things
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: where the boats can't get and it's a lot more affordable.
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: You know, when I was twenty one years old, I
- 1:08:35Speaker 7: wasn't buying a sixty seventy thousand dollars boat. I couldn't
- 1:08:38Speaker 7: afford it. I was working three jobs. So I got
- 1:08:40Speaker 7: into kayak fishing because for me, you know, I just
- 1:08:43Speaker 7: that was successible for me.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: All Right, tell us about the body of water you're
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: on today, what you're fishing for, and how you're doing it.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: Well.
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: I started the morning at a little pond, and I
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: told y'all I had bluegill on every single cast, but
- 1:08:57Speaker 7: I had no service, so I ended up low up
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: and falling down the lake Chipamaga. I do have some
- 1:09:02Speaker 7: experience here, but it's the midsummer. It's pretty sandy. I
- 1:09:06Speaker 7: have one little stretch of rip rap right now that
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: I got here. In my first three casts in a row, again,
- 1:09:11Speaker 7: I say you have a picture. I caught a decent
- 1:09:13Speaker 7: small mouth. I caught a large mouth and on a
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: spotted bass. I don't know if I'm gonna be able
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: to do that on the cast of this, but I
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: feel like it's my best bet and it's worth too
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: in the time that I had. It's a little paddle
- 1:09:24Speaker 7: tail right down that rip rap.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: And see what we can do.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: All right, Well, you're one minute of fishing starts when
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: you make that first cast. Christine is now I don't
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: know if she's gonna stand up today or not. Christine,
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: how how often are you standing when you're fishing out
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: of your kayak?
- 1:09:40Speaker 7: Probably ninety percent of the time. But I'm gonna sit
- 1:09:42Speaker 7: just because y'all will I don't think you'll.
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: Be able to see me.
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: Okay, and tell us about the rip rap that you're
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: tossing this swim bay at.
- 1:09:51Speaker 7: Well, there's actually a little spring that comes in right
- 1:09:53Speaker 7: here and it's it's way. Well, I was in the
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: shade about a.
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: Half an hour ago, so my movie review went wrong,
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: went too long.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: That's really really big.
- 1:10:05Speaker 7: Okay, we're gonna see I'm getting ready to make that
- 1:10:10Speaker 7: first cast already.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: We're ready go for it.
- 1:10:12Speaker 5: Okay, here we go.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: She's made her first cast. She just told us that
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: she caught three already in this spot.
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: Tell me when I'm that thirty seconds.
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: Okay, you're ten seconds in.
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: Well, hopefully with that big win under a belt. The
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: music doesn't affect her as much as it did last week.
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Huh, it is dead calm out there today in Tennessee.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: You are thirty seconds down.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: She's furiously paddling and reeling, switching spots a little bit.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: She's backing up off the location. Twenty seconds to go.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: She just made her third cast. She seems like she
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: only finds a little part of this area productive because
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: she wheels a few times. Many brings it in ten seconds.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: She just made her final casts five seconds. Come on, Christine,
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Oh didn't happen today. That's it for your one minute.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: I have a feeling, though, we'll have you back on
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: because the competitive spirit is clearly there.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Christine, you take this more serious than any of
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: our other anglers. Oh if only ever two minute fishing
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: and twelve minutes large mouth just thirty seconds too late.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Is that a large mouth or a spotted bass?
- 1:11:45Speaker 5: Well, that's actually a little baby large mouth.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Little baby large mouth.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: Oh you didn't have to fall very far.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: I'm not okay right now.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: One minute.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: It's just it's a lot of pressure. In the history
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: of this segment, I think we've had three or four
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: successful anglers. So it's tough and.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: You're welcome back anytime.
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: That's right, Okay, before we go, any other sign of
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: the mythical ten killer lake octopus. You didn't see anything
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: strange on your sonar. Nothing tried grabbing your kayak while
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: you were out there.
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: Held on, I didn't hear that last little farm, was it?
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: It was not important.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: Thank you for joining us, Christine. We'll have you back
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: on one minute fishing some other time.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Bye, no, thank you.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: We have one segment left. I think we're just gonna
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: punt on it though until our next episode.
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: Yeah, a little bit prep.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: It'll want to be saved for then. That means we're
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: at the end of the show. We're gonna do some
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: final fhill feedback. What do you do for Phil?
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: The viewers are chopping at the bit to hear some
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: of this, Phil, it's your favorite classic playing D and D.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: I think Sorcerers are a lot of fun.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Dan the outdoor Man. Favorite TV drink. I think he
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: meant tiki drink. I've said it before, it's the Navy grog.
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: As classic favorite song is singing karaoke, The most fun song,
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: most fun time I've had singing at karaoke was the
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Dixie Chicks now the Chicks Goodbye Earl. I thought that
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: one does it well? It was really fun. Let's see
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: what kind of preamp interface do you use it? Those
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: s M seven bees We got a fat head, you know,
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: providing a little extra extra boost and then it goes
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: into an Alan and he c Q twelve T digital mixer.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Question for Phil do you actually have to work to
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: come up with ideas for segment drops or does the
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: stuff just come to you naturally? I mean, I want
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: to say it just comes to me naturally, but it's
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: mostly because I'm lazy. I think of like the first
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: idea I have, and it's usually like good enough. I
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: think a couple of times I've made like the last call,
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: like ooh, this song would be better, So I'll do that. Phil,
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: you be the theater stage again soon this Christmas at
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: the Ellen Theater and both in Montana. I'll be playing
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: Bob Cratchit and a Christmas Carol, So come on down
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: and uh, I'm I'm looking forward to because my son
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: will also be in the show.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: So that'll be a little fun.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Do we know what part he has?
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: You do not yet know? I think he's too old
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: for tiny tim and so that's he was really hoping
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: for it, but I had to, you know, talk him down.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: I'll be there, Phil, favorite film of all time? Fill
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: us in for those listeners. He spelled everything with the
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: pH This is not the greatest film of all time,
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: but it is my favorite film of all time, and
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: that is the Tom Hanks directed nineteen ninety six movie
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: That Thing You Do. I love that movie. I think
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: it's near perfect, and even the stuff it isn't perfect,
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: I love so much.
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: Randa, what do you think of that movie?
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: It's been a long while. I remember enjoying it when
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: it came out. I was ten at the time. But
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: original score? Am I right?
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Film?
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: I think? Well, it's most known for its original song,
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: which which is just like a perfect pop song written
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: by one of the guys from Fountains of Wayne. Also,
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: I mean just like it's fixed power power song.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: But yeah, what else you got? Phil? A couple more?
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: I'll do one more, I'll do two more. Why is
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: why Phil and Clay not made a collab? It's from Mittias.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Clay and I have made multiple collabs. One of them
- 1:15:10Speaker 3: is the Bear Grease podcast one which I no longer
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: work on but but Clan and I it's I mean,
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: it's mostly Clay's show, but I I I helped him
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: out with kind of like the format and what to
- 1:15:19Speaker 3: do with it. And our other collab was that we
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: were in a band together. We opened the Meat Eater
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: Life tom So if you if you, I don't think
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: there's video, official video that exists of that performance.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Did that have a name to be there?
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Your band?
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: We didn't have a name. No, we should. We should
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: retroactively give ourselves a name. Last one Phil ah the
- 1:15:36Speaker 3: Red dead Red MGE from live stream. It is happening.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: It's just it's probably happening in the fall. We're kind
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: of trying to lock down our goals for the Land
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: Access Initiative for the year and make sure that when
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: we do do some sort of fundraiser, you guys will
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: all know exactly where your money's going and you'll feel
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: good about donating to a good cause.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Well done, very very entertained by the the phil questions,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: were it again sometime? Thank you Annie, Thank you Randall.
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: See everyone back here next week, same time, same place.
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: Thanks for m
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: M hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
