- 0:01Speaker 1: Je Lewald is our Broncos insider Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:05Speaker 1: two five Pro Football, The Insider.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I've covered the league a little while.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Chef Legwall, He's the balloon popper.
- 0:12Speaker 4: He doesn't blow it up.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 0:16Speaker 1: IBDW Local sixty eight.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Start with the job and with a career. It's Leggie
- 0:21Speaker 3: on Altitude Sports Radio five. Look.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Obviously a disappointing loss. I think we went into the
- 0:30Speaker 4: game expecting kind of expecting more of a low scoring game.
- 0:35Speaker 4: You know, we thought it was going to be very
- 0:38Speaker 4: important for us to be patient with the run game
- 0:43Speaker 4: and even play field position. Things that really hurt us.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Obviously offensively, we weren't near good enough. Our third down
- 0:52Speaker 4: numbers I think were two of something. We turned the
- 0:54Speaker 4: ball over once I thought we'd played good defense. You know,
- 0:58Speaker 4: we gave up some yards.
- 1:00Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:00Speaker 4: We we have a big play in the second half,
- 1:03Speaker 4: down at the six. We bust an assignment in a route.
- 1:07Speaker 4: We throw an interception. I think that hurt us.
- 1:14Speaker 1: That's Sean Payton. Yeah, that interception hurt you. There's no
- 1:17Speaker 1: doubt about that. Broncos are row and two. They're scoring
- 1:21Speaker 1: thirteen Wait a minute, is that right?
- 1:23Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:24Speaker 1: Thirteen points per game is what they're averaging so far
- 1:27Speaker 1: to begin this season. And now they go for a
- 1:31Speaker 1: two week road trip between Tampa Bay and the Jets.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Joining us right now the Road Warrior himself from ESPN
- 1:38Speaker 1: covering the Broncos as he has forever. It's our pal
- 1:41Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald with us on a Monday afternoon. Leggy, what's up, dude.
- 1:45Speaker 2: How are we doing?
- 1:46Speaker 4: So?
- 1:47Speaker 3: We're doing good, Leggy.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Much to parts through from that game yesterday, But let's
- 1:51Speaker 1: begin with clock management and situational management at the end
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the game. Try and give me an optimistic view
- 2:01Speaker 1: of what Sean Payton was trying to pull off with
- 2:04Speaker 1: his decisions at the end of the game, and what
- 2:08Speaker 1: planet does anything that Sean was trying to do make sense.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not sure, Nate. I mean, he explained it afterward,
- 2:18Speaker 2: and you know, I listened very intently, and I'm just
- 2:22Speaker 2: not sure. You know, I see the the time framework,
- 2:27Speaker 2: you know, he was putting out there, but you know,
- 2:30Speaker 2: he is adamant. It was discussed on the headset and
- 2:34Speaker 2: they had plenty of time to go over the options.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You know, it was just quirky, you know, to go
- 2:42Speaker 2: for the field goal and not go for an onside
- 2:45Speaker 2: kick and and it, you know, it just seemed odd.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But you know, I think, you know, I don't think
- 2:54Speaker 2: it's too much of a stretch to put forth the
- 2:58Speaker 2: theory that you know, the off bunch of struggles are
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know, affecting him as well and making it more
- 3:05Speaker 2: difficult to maybe make decisions he he would have made
- 3:09Speaker 2: another way in previous years.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Jeff.
- 3:14Speaker 5: They said they saw growth with bone Knicks. I did
- 3:18Speaker 5: not see it, but I also am coming at it
- 3:21Speaker 5: from a frustrated observer at this point. Were you able
- 3:24Speaker 5: to see what was maybe better for bone Nicks this
- 3:26Speaker 5: week than last?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Well, you know, I guess I can't decide yet. And
- 3:31Speaker 2: if a thrill growth, I mean I've been over the
- 3:34Speaker 2: you know, obviously was therey yesterday, and I've been over
- 3:37Speaker 2: a couple of times today in the game, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: in the cut up, you know, including end zone years
- 3:46Speaker 2: and I'm not sure you know what they're considering growth
- 3:50Speaker 2: is it's just simply a product of the Steelers backing
- 3:53Speaker 2: off late in the game they know they've won. You know,
- 3:57Speaker 2: the bulk of his completions over ten yards or at
- 4:02Speaker 2: least half of them were. You know, we're in the
- 4:06Speaker 2: final two drives when the Steelers were basically surrendering everything underneath,
- 4:14Speaker 2: believing the Broncos couldn't drive the field on him, and
- 4:17Speaker 2: the Broncos couldn't drive the field on him. Sight, I
- 4:20Speaker 2: don't know if they're counting those two drives as growth
- 4:23Speaker 2: as they did in Seattle. You know, they score a
- 4:25Speaker 2: touchdown late when Seattle is very content to let them
- 4:30Speaker 2: play the underneath ball over and over again. So you know,
- 4:35Speaker 2: it's growth in terms of getting snaps and being out
- 4:37Speaker 2: there and living through it and you know, and picking
- 4:41Speaker 2: yourself up after mistakes. So yes, I see that growth.
- 4:45Speaker 2: But the things that were concerned coming out of camp
- 4:49Speaker 2: are still a concern. I mean, defenses are going to
- 4:52Speaker 2: play the Broncos this way. They're gonna squeeze bow knicks
- 4:57Speaker 2: into the areas of the field they want him to
- 5:00Speaker 2: throw through and until he shows he could challenge the
- 5:03Speaker 2: boundaries and challenge anything intermediate and deep.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Okay to add to that, then, because you said the
- 5:11Speaker 5: way that they're playing, and I keep hearing how bad
- 5:14Speaker 5: the run game is, and I'm not here to say
- 5:16Speaker 5: you that the run game is doing great, but Adam
- 5:19Speaker 5: Archiletta must have said it seven times on the broadcast.
- 5:22Speaker 5: You were unable to do anything in the short game
- 5:24Speaker 5: and running game until he throws a few passes over
- 5:27Speaker 5: the DS defenses head. So is is the run game
- 5:34Speaker 5: suffering because of the past game or is it really
- 5:36Speaker 5: just putrid?
- 5:38Speaker 2: I mean they're not winning the line of scrimmage. I mean,
- 5:41Speaker 2: I okay, I see teams week after week run the
- 5:45Speaker 2: ball when teams know they're going to run the ball.
- 5:48Speaker 2: So I don't think that's an excuse. You know that,
- 5:51Speaker 2: oh we're getting a loaded box. Well, good running teams
- 5:54Speaker 2: don't care. So and you know, you know, I hesitate
- 6:00Speaker 2: to make it a financial thing. But but they invested
- 6:04Speaker 2: a lot of money in the offensive line and they
- 6:07Speaker 2: need that kind of production out of the offensive line.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And they're not winning the line of scrimmage. I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 2: they surrendered pressure up the middle early in the game,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and I think that impacted bo Nix's mechanics. You know,
- 6:20Speaker 2: the rest of the day. He didn't he didn't step
- 6:22Speaker 2: in the throws in some clean pockets late in the
- 6:24Speaker 2: game because he didn't get those clean pockets early. And
- 6:29Speaker 2: that's a young quarterback again. You know, I guess may
- 6:35Speaker 2: you know ten thousand foot observer frustration is at some
- 6:39Speaker 2: point you're just gonna have to sit down and accept
- 6:42Speaker 2: the fact you chose to start a rookie quarterback and
- 6:46Speaker 2: call a game that way. I feel like he's calling
- 6:50Speaker 2: calling games for a fifth year quarterback that can do
- 6:54Speaker 2: all the things he wants them to do.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Talking at Jeff Legwald with us here on a Monday afternoon,
- 7:00Speaker 1: we're live at hoprob By the Way ninety second and Wadsworth.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Broncos lose Tampa Bay coming up here this week. Leggy's
- 7:08Speaker 1: sticking with the run game for a moment. Next Gen stats,
- 7:12Speaker 1: they've got Javonte Williams as the second worst back in
- 7:16Speaker 1: the NFL so far this year, at least in terms
- 7:18Speaker 1: of rush yards over expectation. He's forty seven yards below expectation.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And that's just using the tracking and trying to figure
- 7:26Speaker 1: out what space he has available to him. Not many
- 7:28Speaker 1: tackles being broken, not many holes getting hit, right there
- 7:33Speaker 1: is Is there something wrong with Javonte Williams.
- 7:38Speaker 3: As a back?
- 7:39Speaker 1: And obviously saying this in the context of also being
- 7:42Speaker 1: aware they're not winning up front.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think you can see occasionally he's missing,
- 7:50Speaker 2: you know, rush lanes, but if the rush lanes aren't
- 7:53Speaker 2: where he expected or aren't where the play is designed,
- 7:56Speaker 2: which is not always easy to figure out in some
- 8:01Speaker 2: in some scenarios, Sir, it's tough to say, Okay, he
- 8:04Speaker 2: missed the hole there, but uh, he is missing some cuts.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think in terms of broken tackles, I don't see
- 8:12Speaker 2: a lot of backs breaking a lot of level one
- 8:15Speaker 2: tackles with defensive ends, defensive tackles, nose tackles, those aren't
- 8:21Speaker 2: the tackles running backs break. They break linebacker tackles, they
- 8:25Speaker 2: break cornerback tackles, they break safety tackles. You got to
- 8:30Speaker 2: get the back to the second level. Then you see
- 8:33Speaker 2: the broken tackle runs. So I don't think they're getting
- 8:37Speaker 2: any of their backs consistently to the second level. And
- 8:41Speaker 2: I think because of that, uh, the backs who get
- 8:46Speaker 2: hit a lot gets hesitake because they they it's it's muddied,
- 8:50Speaker 2: it's a muddy picture. They're not sure where to go.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And I think it's a combination of all of it
- 8:57Speaker 2: and until they and I think some of it is
- 9:02Speaker 2: just keep hammering the nail a little bit. You're in
- 9:05Speaker 2: a one. They've been in one and two score games
- 9:08Speaker 2: in both games for most of the game. Yeah, and
- 9:11Speaker 2: they just exit the running game. You guys have heard
- 9:14Speaker 2: my speech. I mean too bad running plays, and it's
- 9:18Speaker 2: you know, they're gone out of the run game. But
- 9:20Speaker 2: don't throw in completions all afternoon. It doesn't seem to
- 9:24Speaker 2: bother anybody a bit. But that's the part that I
- 9:29Speaker 2: wonder about. You've got a rookie quarterback and if you're
- 9:33Speaker 2: not gonna let them, you know, fling it downfield and
- 9:37Speaker 2: you're not gonna let them hand off and get a
- 9:39Speaker 2: little something at least the protection of a run game.
- 9:44Speaker 2: I don't know what you're asking them to do. So
- 9:47Speaker 2: you know, two games in a row, they open the
- 9:50Speaker 2: game and heavier personnel groupings for a brief drive doesn't
- 9:54Speaker 2: work out. Next possession, everything's three wide, everything's in the gun,
- 9:58Speaker 2: everything's open formation.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 10:01Speaker 2: It's just been a pattern so far, and I think
- 10:05Speaker 2: they've I think as long as right now, as long
- 10:08Speaker 2: as the three wide as their base formation, they're going
- 10:10Speaker 2: to to TV to be frustrated.
- 10:13Speaker 5: All right, Jeff, I'm gonna ask the question because people
- 10:15Speaker 5: feel like I'm not I guess hammering it home enough.
- 10:18Speaker 3: How bad was Patrick certain yesterday?
- 10:21Speaker 2: Well, this is this is worst game as a pro.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And I think he stood in front of his locker
- 10:27Speaker 2: and and said so now he believes he's a physical
- 10:32Speaker 2: corner and he got flagged for I think one in
- 10:35Speaker 2: particular he was bothered by. Uh, but you know he's
- 10:42Speaker 2: it's it's actually kind of interesting they were able to
- 10:46Speaker 2: play the kind of defense they were when he had
- 10:48Speaker 2: the kind of day he did. Uh. You know, he
- 10:51Speaker 2: got flags. He didn't surrender a big play. And I
- 10:54Speaker 2: think you know, if your corner, you're not gonna be
- 10:57Speaker 2: happy with flags, but you're certainly happier that the big
- 11:00Speaker 2: quote unquote big play you surrendered was a third down catch. Uh.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And and I think that's more livable in his word
- 11:09Speaker 2: world than the than the big play. But I don't
- 11:11Speaker 2: think it's Hey signed a ban a huge contract and
- 11:15Speaker 2: he had a test game. I don't see that at all.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Zach Allen. Uh, do we look at him as a
- 11:20Speaker 1: bright spotted guy consistently in the backfield and given Justin
- 11:23Speaker 1: Field's problems yesterday.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's a that's a high effort player, man,
- 11:29Speaker 2: and his his snap count is high for a defensive lineman,
- 11:32Speaker 2: and uh, you know, I think you know they're struggling
- 11:37Speaker 2: at times in the middle of the defensive line still,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and I think they're trying to work that out. I
- 11:42Speaker 2: think some of the run yardage they're giving up is
- 11:45Speaker 2: because their interior guys are getting turned off and on,
- 11:49Speaker 2: especially when Franklin Myers is out of the game. I
- 11:52Speaker 2: think they get the interior guys turned a lot when
- 11:55Speaker 2: he's not in there, and when he left the game
- 11:58Speaker 2: with a concussion, I think up front they had to
- 12:02Speaker 2: play a little differently. But he has been one of
- 12:06Speaker 2: their real consistent guys through two weeks, and again I
- 12:10Speaker 2: think people should realize how rare it is that he's
- 12:13Speaker 2: got the kind of stammina to play the high snapcount
- 12:16Speaker 2: like that in a line position on defense.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Yeah, career high eight pressures in a sack against Pittsburgh
- 12:24Speaker 1: yesterday out of Zach Allens of some good news right
- 12:26Speaker 1: there coming from the defensive front. They only gave up
- 12:29Speaker 1: thirteen points, gave their offensive chance to win. We're talking
- 12:32Speaker 1: to Jeff Legwald on a Monday afternoon. Jeff's appearances are
- 12:36Speaker 1: brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers
- 12:39Speaker 1: IBW Local sixty eight. You start with a job, you
- 12:41Speaker 1: end with a career. Jeff, Mike McGlinchey is injured. How
- 12:46Speaker 1: long do we expect his absence to be? And who
- 12:50Speaker 1: will be starting to right tackle against Tampa Bay next week?
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's he looked a little frustrated, you know,
- 12:59Speaker 2: leaving to the locker room and after the game. So
- 13:02Speaker 2: you know, when I last checked, they were still kind
- 13:06Speaker 2: of looking at the believe it the knee injury, left
- 13:11Speaker 2: leg injury, and and he is you know, I think
- 13:15Speaker 2: they're thinking they're gonna need at least a few weeks
- 13:19Speaker 2: to uh to replace him. And you know, Purt's been
- 13:24Speaker 2: the back up on the left side, Pales has been
- 13:27Speaker 2: the back up on the right side. Some you know, again,
- 13:31Speaker 2: this is a Quinn Bailey, the injured Quinn Bailey would
- 13:35Speaker 2: be in the mix here too if he if he
- 13:37Speaker 2: was not hurt. So, uh, I think until they practice Wednesday, Uh,
- 13:44Speaker 2: I think they're they're still going over what they really
- 13:46Speaker 2: want to do if they if they've got to cover
- 13:49Speaker 2: things up there and it you know again, you know,
- 13:51Speaker 2: are you gonna still consistently go with all of these
- 13:55Speaker 2: open formations when you're already having to to do things
- 14:00Speaker 2: in the offensive line. And you know, I think Garrett
- 14:03Speaker 2: Bowles will bear watching too. You know, he's he's blessed
- 14:07Speaker 2: two games briefly now with with things going on with
- 14:11Speaker 2: his legs.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Honestly, Nate took my question.
- 14:16Speaker 5: I want to I wanna, uh, well, I'm trying to
- 14:20Speaker 5: look good. Point it was, well, we need to know
- 14:23Speaker 5: about McGlinchey, because again, Jeff Legwall proves to be light
- 14:26Speaker 5: right when he told you all off season there's no
- 14:28Speaker 5: way they're gonna stay as healthy on the offensive line
- 14:31Speaker 5: as they did a year ago.
- 14:32Speaker 3: And we're two games in and they are not. So
- 14:35Speaker 3: that stinks.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Okay, Jeff, what would you do, not just for bon Knicks,
- 14:41Speaker 5: but the whole offense.
- 14:43Speaker 3: What would you do to try to just get this
- 14:45Speaker 3: going the right direction that they're not doing anyway?
- 14:50Speaker 2: You know, I know, I you know it's gonna sound
- 14:54Speaker 2: a little get off my lawn, but I think they
- 14:56Speaker 2: have to get more boring to get more exciting, if
- 14:59Speaker 2: that makes sense. I think they they have somehow got
- 15:04Speaker 2: to find a way to win the line of scrimmage first,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and if that's just pounding away in the run game,
- 15:11Speaker 2: for a while until they make a crease or two, uh,
- 15:15Speaker 2: and stay in getting Maybe it's a six to three
- 15:17Speaker 2: game at halftime. Maybe you just live with that. Maybe
- 15:20Speaker 2: you live with seven to three. Uh. You know they've
- 15:24Speaker 2: been in both games. The defense has played well enough
- 15:28Speaker 2: to win. You know, Yes, rushing yards are higher than
- 15:31Speaker 2: Sean Payton likes, you know, rushing yards allowed, But in
- 15:35Speaker 2: the end, it's it's points. And you know they're the
- 15:39Speaker 2: defense is keeping them in games. Uh, And they're not
- 15:44Speaker 2: in blowout situations where they have to just immediately jump
- 15:48Speaker 2: to all this. And I know they think bo Nicks
- 15:51Speaker 2: is more comfortable in the gun, and I know they
- 15:55Speaker 2: want to give him that cleaner look of a spread
- 15:59Speaker 2: out for me, But he's got four picks, no touchdowns.
- 16:04Speaker 2: They're scoring thirteen points a game. Maybe you just trim
- 16:08Speaker 2: the playbook a bit and not just make it so okay,
- 16:13Speaker 2: we're just gonna be in the gun all the time
- 16:16Speaker 2: because that's what he likes. And I'm just not sure
- 16:19Speaker 2: they can they can eat their dessert for dinner as
- 16:22Speaker 2: it were. You can't just do what they like right now.
- 16:25Speaker 2: They've got to do it could win them a game
- 16:27Speaker 2: or two, and that may be just to muscle up
- 16:30Speaker 2: a little bit and play to what their defense is doing.
- 16:36Speaker 2: You know, look look at how comfortable the Steelers were
- 16:39Speaker 2: the first two weeks of the season, kicking field goals,
- 16:43Speaker 2: taking field position. I mean, nobody's gonna put them on
- 16:48Speaker 2: the internet and say, look how innovative they are and look, oh,
- 16:51Speaker 2: this is amazing and all of this stuff is you know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: just shoot confetti all over the place and this is
- 16:58Speaker 2: really cool. Uh, they just go win, And I think
- 17:02Speaker 2: the Broncos need to do that for a little while
- 17:05Speaker 2: and then they'll have some room to get Bonnicks loose
- 17:10Speaker 2: a little bit. But teams are gonna play him this
- 17:12Speaker 2: way until they prove, uh, they can either out muscle
- 17:18Speaker 2: them or or throw it over the top. And you know,
- 17:22Speaker 2: right now the Broncos are doing neither.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Oh it's old Brock.
- 17:27Speaker 5: You know they're in the in the office, we had
- 17:29Speaker 5: the character broccoli Rob. He's broccoli, Jeff, He's our broccoli Rob. There, Nate,
- 17:34Speaker 5: just eat your dang broccoli.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Is gonna be in our vocal tree.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Yeah you can be in our you can be our
- 17:40Speaker 3: a capella group.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Good good, Well, what will we do when we do
- 17:46Speaker 2: like you know.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Nursing homes. Yeah, barber shops, kid's birthday parties, it's the
- 17:55Speaker 1: street exactly. Yes, we'll well, just we'll absolutely clean lightrail platforms.
- 18:01Speaker 5: You know what we'll do, Jeff, we'll sing outside the
- 18:03Speaker 5: stadium when Sean Baton comes out. We can just sing,
- 18:06Speaker 5: kind of like when you used to hammer Pat Sherman
- 18:08Speaker 5: on Why the three wide?
- 18:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it'd be great.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Why the play calls so long? Seane? Why the play
- 18:14Speaker 3: calls so long? I don't know. Yeah, you both are shot.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I don't know if Jeff's in that.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Yeah, Jeff, Jeff's just not got time for the nonsense.
- 18:29Speaker 1: By the way, how long are you going to be
- 18:31Speaker 1: gone for? What is the Yeah, two weeks of your life?
- 18:34Speaker 3: Look like here?
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's uh, you know, around this week.
- 18:38Speaker 2: But it's it's like an old school baseball or a
- 18:41Speaker 2: hockey road trip day.
- 18:44Speaker 1: You'll go, you'll you'll go to Tampa this weekend and
- 18:46Speaker 1: then you'll just hang out there and beautiful South Carolina.
- 18:49Speaker 1: All right, Jeff Legwald. Uh, we appreciate it as always, man,
- 18:53Speaker 1: Thank you so much. We'll talk to you on Friday.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Thanks, we'll see it.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald brought to you by the Inner National Brotherhood
- 19:00Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers IBW Local sixty eight. You start with
- 19:04Speaker 1: a job, You end with a career.
