Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Gavin Grey: UK Correspondent on two counter terrorism investigations in the UK and thousands of people at risk of losing hot water
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right now, Gevin Gray in the UK for US givin
- 0:02Speaker 1: good morning. Hither are now eight men arrested over a
- 0:06Speaker 1: suspected TIRA plot involving a target, a specific target. Do
- 0:11Speaker 1: we know what it was?
- 0:13Speaker 2: No, we're not being told that. We do know that
- 0:15Speaker 2: of the eight, seven are Iranian nationals. Now, it's a
- 0:20Speaker 2: combination of two different police operations going on around the UK,
- 0:24Speaker 2: A gang of three, it said, being arrested in and
- 0:27Speaker 2: around London, but also five others arrested at various locations
- 0:32Speaker 2: around England. Part they're saying of a pre planned investigation
- 0:36Speaker 2: into an alleged plot too, as you said, target a
- 0:39Speaker 2: specific premises. Now, all five who were arrested around the
- 0:44Speaker 2: country were arrested on suspicion appropriation of an act of terrorism.
- 0:49Speaker 2: In the second operation, the three men aged between thirty
- 0:52Speaker 2: nine and fifty five were arrested under the National Security
- 0:56Speaker 2: Act at different addresses. What's interesting about this ran, you
- 0:58Speaker 2: might think, well, Iranian nationals in the UK. Well, that
- 1:01Speaker 2: is a common thread to what's going on here, because
- 1:04Speaker 2: just last year the director general of mi I five
- 1:07Speaker 2: said his organization and police have responded to twenty Iran
- 1:11Speaker 2: backed plots presenting potentially lethal threats to British citizens in
- 1:15Speaker 2: UK residents since January of twenty twenty two, so twenty
- 1:19Speaker 2: plots over a period of just over two and a
- 1:21Speaker 2: half years. When he said that, and that, I think
- 1:23Speaker 2: goes some way to show you just where MI I
- 1:25Speaker 2: five is getting so busy.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Absolutely, Now, what's the problem with your heating or potential
- 1:30Speaker 1: problem with your heating?
- 1:32Speaker 2: Yeah, So, in the nineteen eighties, meters were fitted to
- 1:36Speaker 2: effectively switch between peak and off peak use of electricity,
- 1:42Speaker 2: because of course off peak is cheaper. However, these so
- 1:46Speaker 2: called RTS Radio Teleswitching System meters were replaced eventually by
- 1:51Speaker 2: smart meters, although frankly many people don't trust those in
- 1:54Speaker 2: their home either. Anyway, this old technology is going to
- 1:58Speaker 2: be switched off on the thirtieth of June, but it's
- 2:00Speaker 2: estimated by some in the industry that there are still
- 2:02Speaker 2: four hundred and thirty thousand households using RTS meters for
- 2:07Speaker 2: their heating and hot water, and only one thousand are
- 2:10Speaker 2: being replaced each day. So by doing the maths, thinking
- 2:13Speaker 2: this has to be done by the thirtieth of June,
- 2:15Speaker 2: there's simply going to be nowhere near hitting the number
- 2:19Speaker 2: of households that they need to do in order to
- 2:21Speaker 2: get these people's monitors basically updated. And they're saying there
- 2:27Speaker 2: is a very real risk that once this system is
- 2:29Speaker 2: switched off, this long wave radio frequency system, then that
- 2:33Speaker 2: could mean that people are left without hot water or heating.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It is our summer, so that should be okay, but
- 2:39Speaker 2: it's going to be pretty inconvenient for many people, all.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Right, Devin, Good to have you on. Devin Gray, our
- 2:44Speaker 1: UK correspondent.
