- 0:02Speaker 1: Dan Zimborski is the senior writer for Fangrafts. Excited to
- 0:06Speaker 1: have him on the show talking about the just released
- 0:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty six Booms and Bus. Let's talk about that. Dan,
- 0:13Speaker 1: good to be with you on the Pitchers dropped tomorrow,
- 0:17Speaker 1: So let's start with the boom.
- 0:18Speaker 2: So do you have Well, this is always a fun
- 0:22Speaker 2: piece for me because I'm a math guy, so there's
- 0:25Speaker 2: a lot of hedge betting at any given time, and
- 0:27Speaker 2: I always like to write an article or two where
- 0:29Speaker 2: I have a very real risk of looking incredibly stupid.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Some of my picks last year were, let's just say,
- 0:35Speaker 2: did not work out at the top. I have Andrew
- 0:38Speaker 2: Vaughna the Milwaukee Breweries, which, as I said, is also
- 0:41Speaker 2: kind of a cheat, but he's one of those players.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think that the projection system do you see on
- 0:46Speaker 2: Fangrafts or Baseball's perspectives, I don't think they've really taken
- 0:50Speaker 2: into consideration how much his approach changed when he went
- 0:53Speaker 2: to Milwaukee last year from when he was in Chicago.
- 0:55Speaker 2: It was a world of difference in his approach at
- 0:57Speaker 2: the play. I have Carter Jensen, I have Bryce Terrang,
- 1:00Speaker 2: I have Justin Crawford, Matt McClain. I always kind of
- 1:03Speaker 2: go out there on a limb with a guy or two.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I picked Kemp Alderman of the Miami Marlins, who probably
- 1:09Speaker 2: has no chance of getting meaningful time in the majors,
- 1:11Speaker 2: but he's interesting and I like interesting you.
- 1:15Speaker 3: The one name on the list was Jordan Lawler. Jordan
- 1:18Speaker 3: Lawler being a boom? What does that mean when you're
- 1:22Speaker 3: when you're a guy that could have had a position
- 1:25Speaker 3: if they didn't bring kateel mar teback. Now you're possibly
- 1:29Speaker 3: changing positions. Are you saying Jordan Lawler just is a
- 1:32Speaker 3: good player and if he gets a chance, he could boom.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I think he could be a really good player. He
- 1:37Speaker 2: could be a starting outfielder. He's been pretty solid out there.
- 1:42Speaker 2: It's gotta be tough for him because at different points
- 1:45Speaker 2: he could have been the second baseman, the shortstop, or
- 1:47Speaker 2: the third baseman for the Diamondbacks. None of that came
- 1:50Speaker 2: to pass for obvious reasons, and I think given Perdomo's
- 1:55Speaker 2: emergence last year, he's almost forgotten in some regards that
- 2:00Speaker 2: people forget how good a prospect he was. He did
- 2:03Speaker 2: have injury issues, his shoulder, his hamstring, his thumb. I
- 2:06Speaker 2: think that there's a real good chance that he has
- 2:08Speaker 2: a big season, and he's one of those guys who's
- 2:10Speaker 2: pretty advanced that he could be in the you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: the rookie of the Year mix depending on how things
- 2:14Speaker 2: work out.
- 2:16Speaker 4: I mean, Bryce Terrang on this list, he's pretty good already,
- 2:19Speaker 4: isn't he is? He's supposed to get even better. I
- 2:21Speaker 4: mean you said Andrew Vaughn was a layup. I mean
- 2:24Speaker 4: Bryce Terrang. He showed what he could do in the WBC.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I feel like that was more of the layoup for
- 2:29Speaker 4: me than Andrew Vaughn.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well. I think with Terrang one of the things we
- 2:33Speaker 2: saw with him is that his exit velocities increased a
- 2:37Speaker 2: lot over the course of the season. I think he
- 2:40Speaker 2: could be an even better player because I think there's
- 2:42Speaker 2: still some untapped full season home run power that we
- 2:44Speaker 2: could see because he hit a lot of home runs
- 2:47Speaker 2: in the second half compared to the first half, which
- 2:49Speaker 2: was consistent with the exit velocity data and the swing
- 2:53Speaker 2: rate stuff we get from stack cast. I think he
- 2:56Speaker 2: could be, you know, a twenty five to thirty home
- 2:58Speaker 2: run guy while still maintain any of the things he
- 3:00Speaker 2: already does well and so for me, that does constitute
- 3:04Speaker 2: a breakout. But again, I'm a writer. I like to
- 3:07Speaker 2: cheat a little bit when I get a chance.
- 3:09Speaker 4: And obviously Kaglione, if Kaglione could just make contact, I mean,
- 3:13Speaker 4: he's gonna hit forty homers if he just makes enough
- 3:15Speaker 4: contact and can get in the zone enough. But we
- 3:18Speaker 4: saw it in the WBC kind of like with brys
- 3:20Speaker 4: ter Ring right when he makes contact, the ball goes
- 3:22Speaker 4: really far and really hard. But then teams just don't
- 3:26Speaker 4: throw him strikes and he chase up and then he
- 3:28Speaker 4: chases down. He's just ultra aggressive if they can reel
- 3:30Speaker 4: him in. I mean that that seems like one that
- 3:33Speaker 4: could go off the charts.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and he showed a lot of growth last spring
- 3:37Speaker 2: training the Royals, advancing through the minor leagues very quickly
- 3:41Speaker 2: out of college. He's one of those guys I think
- 3:45Speaker 2: that once he consolidates his games, he will show improvement.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I don't think he's ever gonna be the most scientific hitter,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but hit ball go far is not the worst strategy
- 3:53Speaker 2: in the world.
- 3:54Speaker 3: If he can pull it off, you don't need to
- 3:55Speaker 3: be scientific. If you're six' five incredibly good looking in
- 3:59Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty. Pounds so what about what about the?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Busts Because i'm not even gonna go down your list
- 4:08Speaker 3: of bus there's one on. Here i'm gonna Save alana
- 4:11Speaker 3: the time and energy from saying. It you Have Freddy
- 4:15Speaker 3: freeman on the bust, list and you are gonna need
- 4:18Speaker 3: to explain.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yourself, well the saying is whatever can't go on forever.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Won't and the fact is he is going to turn
- 4:28Speaker 2: thirty seven before the season. Ends and you did see
- 4:31Speaker 2: a little bit of deterioration in some of his plate discipline.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Stats his contact rate took a big. Dip and that's
- 4:38Speaker 2: one thing you see historically that older, players when you
- 4:41Speaker 2: start seeing their contact rate, change even if they start
- 4:44Speaker 2: from a high place or a low, place that that
- 4:46Speaker 2: tends to trumpet some trouble. AHEAD i don't think he's
- 4:51Speaker 2: going to be terrible or, anything BUT i think that
- 4:54Speaker 2: we've been spoiled by his almost lack of aging in
- 4:57Speaker 2: the last five or six. Years BUT i think there's
- 4:59Speaker 2: a real answer that this is the year that we
- 5:01Speaker 2: really start to See freeman. Slide towards His cooperstown, speech
- 5:06Speaker 2: how dare? You how dare?
- 5:09Speaker 1: You he was dealing with an ankle. Injury he had
- 5:13Speaker 1: a left rib injury as. Well he also said at
- 5:17Speaker 1: spring training when Foul territory was, there when we talked to,
- 5:21Speaker 1: him that he was absolutely irked that he did not
- 5:23Speaker 1: finish the season with at least a three hundred. Average
- 5:27Speaker 1: he wants to finish his career as A. DODGER i
- 5:29Speaker 1: think that you just lit a fire under, him my,
- 5:31Speaker 1: friend you better take him off the.
- 5:33Speaker 2: List, hey IF i led a fire to someone and
- 5:36Speaker 2: they have a good season because they're mad at, me
- 5:39Speaker 2: that's kind of a victory in the.
- 5:41Speaker 1: End what About Spencer steer, though what do you think about?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Him that's going to be a bust coming off. Injury
- 5:46Speaker 1: what do you think more about that he's one.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Of those guys who's kind of a tweener and that
- 5:50Speaker 2: his offense isn't really that great for the positions he
- 5:53Speaker 2: plays well and he's not really a third base but
- 5:55Speaker 2: he's not really an. Outfielder he's The Red sea to
- 6:00Speaker 2: like him more than is, justified AND i think they
- 6:02Speaker 2: really should be looking to move. On he strikes me
- 6:04Speaker 2: as more of a fourth outfielder role player type long
- 6:07Speaker 2: term than someone who really should be Starting The reds
- 6:12Speaker 2: have a lot of offensive. PROBLEMS i think when you
- 6:13Speaker 2: get Past Lady La, cruz And i'm not Sure steer
- 6:16Speaker 2: really helps things though the way they are. Now i'm
- 6:18Speaker 2: positive About Sal. Stewart he's someone who was really close
- 6:21Speaker 2: to making My booms, list BUT i did have to
- 6:26Speaker 2: edit it down to manageable.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Size one of the other bus Was Jacob, wilson who
- 6:33Speaker 3: would have been The rookie of The year had they
- 6:35Speaker 3: not called up the giant at his kerts and he
- 6:38Speaker 3: ran away with The rookie of The. Year but what
- 6:40Speaker 3: About Jacob wilson's? Game do you FEEL i could take a?
- 6:44Speaker 3: Regression is it just the second half that he had last?
- 6:47Speaker 2: Year that's a. Concern but one of the things with
- 6:51Speaker 2: the really good contact, hitters the ones who were you,
- 6:54Speaker 2: know naturally, gifted is there SOMETHING i always call the
- 6:56Speaker 2: contact rate death, spiral because once you can show that
- 7:01Speaker 2: you can hit almost, anything then that temptation to hit
- 7:04Speaker 2: almost anything kind of becomes a problematic if unless you
- 7:08Speaker 2: work around. IT i think long term he will be
- 7:10Speaker 2: fine and he will work with. That BUT i think
- 7:13Speaker 2: back On David. Fletcher now he's a better player Than David,
- 7:16Speaker 2: fletcher but As David fletcher's contact rate went, up the
- 7:19Speaker 2: pitches he went after got worse and, worse and his
- 7:23Speaker 2: contact became weaker and weaker and less, effectual and that
- 7:26Speaker 2: kind of spelled the end Of David. Fletcher he went from,
- 7:28Speaker 2: being you, know having a really niche role as an
- 7:32Speaker 2: underrated second baseman to basically being out of the majors
- 7:35Speaker 2: in two. Years Luis arraiz has kind of the same,
- 7:39Speaker 2: thing where he's making great, contact but he's hitting worse
- 7:44Speaker 2: and worse, pitches and he's his pitches the balls and
- 7:47Speaker 2: player becoming less and less, effectual it actually becoming. Hits
- 7:50Speaker 2: that's a risk For. WILSON i do think he'll overcome,
- 7:52Speaker 2: it BUT i think that there will be some growing
- 7:55Speaker 2: pains and we might have what we would call the
- 7:57Speaker 2: sophomore slump. Year SO i think it just won't look
- 8:01Speaker 2: as good as twenty twenty five. Did.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Dan if you had to put all of your eggs
- 8:05Speaker 1: in one boom basket and one bust, basket where are
- 8:09Speaker 1: your eggs?
- 8:10Speaker 2: GOING i think For, Boom i'm going to go With.
- 8:15Speaker 2: CAGNIONE i don't. KNOW i was all in On kagnon last.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Year this might just be me being annoyed THAT i
- 8:22Speaker 2: was wrong BECAUSE i was pushing for The royals to
- 8:25Speaker 2: call him up. QUICKLY i was On Casey radio several
- 8:28Speaker 2: times talking about, that and that did not work out last.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Year so there's there's a little bit, of you, know
- 8:32Speaker 2: vengeance factor on the stats to think about for The
- 8:37Speaker 2: for The, busts it's not quite as, sexy BUT i
- 8:40Speaker 2: Think anderhar is the. Riskiest there's a lot of air
- 8:43Speaker 2: in their. Stats last, year he had what an eight
- 8:46Speaker 2: thirty something ops and it's really hard to look at
- 8:49Speaker 2: the stackcast, data the hit, data the peripheral, data his
- 8:52Speaker 2: batting average and balls and play and seeing him able
- 8:54Speaker 2: to maintain that. NOW i don't think The padres had
- 8:57Speaker 2: much of a choice given their payroll, situation BUT i
- 8:59Speaker 2: Think anderhar it's gonna be a big disappointment offensively this.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Year you have Two royals on your boom. List are
- 9:08Speaker 1: they winning The? Central it's wide.
- 9:10Speaker 2: OPEN i think The tigers are still the, favorite BUT
- 9:13Speaker 2: i would not be surprised at all by The royals
- 9:15Speaker 2: winning the. DIVISION i KNOW i get accused of being
- 9:19Speaker 2: too mean to The, royals but this is a good.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Team they have a really stable pitching. Staff even If
- 9:24Speaker 2: he's in the most exciting, rotation, especially but they have
- 9:30Speaker 2: a deep they have that deep, rotation and if they
- 9:32Speaker 2: can get some offensive, upside because they already Have, wit
- 9:34Speaker 2: they already Have. Garcia If cagliowan breaks, out If Carter
- 9:37Speaker 2: jensen has a big rookie, year all of a, sudden
- 9:40Speaker 2: that's a pretty decent offensive. Team and they were not
- 9:43Speaker 2: a decent offensive team last. Year SO i think a
- 9:45Speaker 2: team is. UPSIDE i would pick The tigers right, now
- 9:48Speaker 2: but it wouldn't take that many nasty surprises for The
- 9:51Speaker 2: tigers to put The royals right.
- 9:52Speaker 4: There by the, way you Have oseel twove on. You
- 9:57Speaker 4: that dude hits three hundred every. Year let's get off
- 9:59Speaker 4: the old. Guys, okay he hitched To hall Of famers
- 10:01Speaker 4: on this list for, BUS i mean if he doesn't
- 10:04Speaker 4: hit three thirty with, THIRTY i mean he hits two
- 10:07Speaker 4: ninety with, twenty does that have a bust.
- 10:09Speaker 5: YEAR i don't know.
- 10:12Speaker 2: If that would be a bus BUT i think you
- 10:14Speaker 2: look at at second basement, historically and they do those
- 10:18Speaker 2: middle infielder types when they start to, fade they Gou
- 10:21Speaker 2: you look at the peripheral X lug, data the ONE
- 10:24Speaker 2: i calculated had similar that there was just a lot
- 10:27Speaker 2: to not be a fan of in twenty twenty. FIVE
- 10:30Speaker 2: i don't have a problem with the old. GUYS i
- 10:31Speaker 2: MEAN i became an old. Guy i'm gonna be fifty
- 10:33Speaker 2: in a couple of, Years so no no agism, here all, Right.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Dan last one for.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Me next year when you write your, article can you
- 10:41Speaker 3: please put what the bust line is and what the
- 10:45Speaker 3: Boom wait a, minute don't say bus, line, sorry and
- 10:48Speaker 3: the boom line is like you could come back at
- 10:51Speaker 3: the end of the year ago Whoa Jack Kigleon he
- 10:54Speaker 3: had thirty homers but he hit two? Thirty, like can
- 10:58Speaker 3: you give us like a like a boom line and.
- 11:01Speaker 5: The other one line, also SO i don't repeat the
- 11:03Speaker 5: same THING i just.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Said, YEAH i could probably put that in stone so
- 11:08Speaker 2: THAT i can't, escape which is always the risk of.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Anyone he does projections, perfect all, Right, Dan thank you so.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Much Jen zienborski of, course senior writer For. Fangrass we appreciate.
- 11:19Speaker 1: It we'll be checking in with you to see how
- 11:21Speaker 1: good you are at all of. This thanks for being with.

- 11:51Speaker 3: in the season up here in The, northeast you kind
- 11:53Speaker 3: of want to go to a day game where you're
- 11:55Speaker 3: still going to be in the. Sun it might shift
- 11:57Speaker 3: during the, summer but, hey you know, what seake will
- 11:59Speaker 3: let you know exactly where you're sitting and if it's

- 12:27Speaker 5: On.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Off we're joining now By Will, carrol the host Of Injury.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Territory if you have not subscribed to that podcast on
- 12:38Speaker 1: The Foul Territory, network please do you are certainly missing?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Out hate that we have to have you on for. This,
- 12:44Speaker 1: well it's good to be with. You but, Man Spencer,
- 12:46Speaker 1: stridd seems like you can't catch a break on THE
- 12:48Speaker 1: il at least to start the season with an oblique,
- 12:51Speaker 1: strain and we certainly know that those things are. Tricky
- 12:54Speaker 1: what more can you tell?
- 12:55Speaker 5: Us, yeah this is a simple oblique. String we're not
- 12:58Speaker 5: sure exactly how or when it, happened but For strider
- 13:01Speaker 5: and The braves it really doesn't. Matter this is going
- 13:03Speaker 5: to be about a. Month he's going to have to
- 13:05Speaker 5: not only let that. Heal those are very tricky in
- 13:08Speaker 5: those first couple. Weeks we've learned very quickly over the
- 13:12Speaker 5: years that you don't want to have a quick. Setback
- 13:16Speaker 5: too many times guys are trying to come, back trying
- 13:19Speaker 5: to throw too, early trying to hit too. Early it's
- 13:21Speaker 5: any rotational, activity and that's pretty much the entire game of.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Baseball so For, strider this is another one where some
- 13:29Speaker 5: of the things that make him great might act against.
- 13:31Speaker 5: Him he is just so muscle bound you worry a
- 13:35Speaker 5: little bit about, flexibility and he's had. Problems obviously that
- 13:39Speaker 5: isn't why he had ucl, surgery but he has had
- 13:42Speaker 5: a number of muscular, injuries and for guys of that physical,
- 13:47Speaker 5: type we see that pretty. Regularly BUT i think The
- 13:50Speaker 5: braves they've certainly got some. OPTIONS i heard them talking
- 13:55Speaker 5: About didi Or. Fuenttes not sure he's going to get
- 13:58Speaker 5: the call up right at the, start but we'll see
- 14:00Speaker 5: exactly where this. Goes strider will be BACK i would
- 14:03Speaker 5: say probably Mid.
- 14:04Speaker 3: April, hitters obviously you hear with obliques pictures anytime there's an,
- 14:09Speaker 3: injury it's really how long you're. Out, yes it has to,
- 14:13Speaker 3: heal but how long do you think he's unable to actually?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Throw because that's WHEN i look At even if a
- 14:20Speaker 3: pitcher's down for seven, days his ramp up before he
- 14:23Speaker 3: even gets on the mound is fourteen days after. That
- 14:26Speaker 3: so if he's down for a month of not, throwing
- 14:31Speaker 3: it's a long long. Time more than so with a,
- 14:33Speaker 3: hitter Where it's, like once he gets, going they can
- 14:36Speaker 3: ramp it, up but they have to be one hundred.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Percent so is their ability to throw during this time
- 14:41Speaker 3: or is it just like a hitter where you can't
- 14:43Speaker 3: have that.
- 14:44Speaker 5: Rotation you can't have the. Rotation he'll do some things
- 14:47Speaker 5: to try to keep the arm, going to keep the
- 14:50Speaker 5: chronic workload in, there but you're exactly, right he's gonna
- 14:53Speaker 5: have to have a Ramp that isn't as big a
- 14:56Speaker 5: deal as it used to. Be teams aren't saying these
- 14:58Speaker 5: guys have to be ready to go sou and they
- 15:00Speaker 5: have to be ready to go. Eight they're perfectly happy
- 15:02Speaker 5: if they're going out there for four, five because pretty
- 15:05Speaker 5: much that's a normal start these. Days but there is
- 15:08Speaker 5: going to have to be some ramp. Up and we're
- 15:10Speaker 5: seeing more and more organizations that really understand these kind
- 15:14Speaker 5: of chronic, workloads how to manage, those how to keep
- 15:17Speaker 5: everything in balance and hopefully see less arm injuries we have.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Seen this is one THING i haven't seen talked about
- 15:24Speaker 5: is the spring numbers On Tommy john surgeries are significantly,
- 15:28Speaker 5: down like cut in, half and nobody seemed to have an.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Answer why.
- 15:34Speaker 4: When did we start worrying about The braves and what
- 15:36Speaker 4: they're doing as an organization because striders have been. Hurt you,
- 15:39Speaker 4: know obviously they've already Lost schwellenbach, Again Smith schwarva is already.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Down it's just one after. Another Ronaldo lopez went. Down
- 15:47Speaker 4: sale wasn't the same last? Year when did we start
- 15:49Speaker 4: worrying about The braves and all their injuries that they've
- 15:52Speaker 4: had as an, organization because it's not only, pitchers also position.
- 15:54Speaker 5: Players they've had guys go down and. Coulding obviously the
- 15:57Speaker 5: freaking meat.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Things riley miss, time all missed, time, RIGHT i, mean
- 16:01Speaker 4: it's just like one after another with this.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Organization. Yeah, absolutely and they've got a good medical, staff
- 16:07Speaker 5: but at some point results? Count is? It the players
- 16:10Speaker 5: aren't set up? Right with A, Kunya you've got to
- 16:13Speaker 5: think maybe that's a genetic thing that he just had
- 16:16Speaker 5: weak knees and when he got into those, positions both
- 16:19Speaker 5: of them. Went you kind of think back To Manny,
- 16:21Speaker 5: machado who had knee problems early in his career on both,
- 16:24Speaker 5: sides just As akuna. Did but it's had a really,
- 16:26Speaker 5: great Possibly hall Of fame career after, that you don't
- 16:30Speaker 5: see any sort of Pattern it's not like we're seeing
- 16:32Speaker 5: a whole bunch of hamstring. Injuries there's one year where The,
- 16:34Speaker 5: yankees like eight of their fifteen top guys had hamstring
- 16:39Speaker 5: injuries because they were doing completely new sprint series for
- 16:43Speaker 5: their new strength. Coach there's no known thing, here but
- 16:48Speaker 5: you do have to look at the full. System are
- 16:50Speaker 5: these guys not in the kind of? Shape are they
- 16:51Speaker 5: in the wrong shape to be playing? Baseball AND i
- 16:54Speaker 5: know that sounds, weird but sports science is, very very.
- 16:56Speaker 5: SPECIFIC i know people inside the. Organization i'm asking that
- 17:00Speaker 5: question right.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Now you said about being muscle, bound and obviously you
- 17:04Speaker 3: know everyone talks About strider and his tight pants and
- 17:07Speaker 3: then they show first shot is his. Quadzillas is there
- 17:11Speaker 3: a is there fact to WHAT aj AND i have
- 17:16Speaker 3: said for a long, time like you can't pull? Fat
- 17:18Speaker 3: is there a like is there a percentage of body
- 17:23Speaker 3: fat that players you feel like should have or is
- 17:26Speaker 3: it all just about flexibility and strength and how that combines.
- 17:31Speaker 5: A little of. Both you, know you don't have to,
- 17:34Speaker 5: be you, know a body. Builder you don't have to
- 17:38Speaker 5: be buff and jacked to be a. Picture but it.
- 17:41Speaker 5: Does you, know it's not Bad, Spencer strider is certainly.
- 17:44Speaker 5: Good we're seeing more and more athletic pictures. Now you
- 17:46Speaker 5: don't see the guys who look Like i'm gonna date myself,
- 17:49Speaker 5: Here Rick. Russell you just don't get The David. Wells
- 17:54Speaker 5: you don't get those guys out there that much. Anymore
- 17:58Speaker 5: but that said, it it's not about a body. Type
- 18:01Speaker 5: it's not about a fat. Number it's not about how
- 18:04Speaker 5: big or strong you. ARE i can remember looking at
- 18:07Speaker 5: pictures years ago there was one at The All Star
- 18:10Speaker 5: game OF i think it Was Pedro, Martinez Greg, Maddox Roger,
- 18:14Speaker 5: clemens And Randy. Johnson and these guys don't look like
- 18:17Speaker 5: the same, species let alone the same. Occupation so there's
- 18:22Speaker 5: not one. Type what it comes down to, you and
- 18:24Speaker 5: this is an absolute is. Function can you do the
- 18:27Speaker 5: things you have to, do and not only, that can
- 18:30Speaker 5: you do them over and over and over and over
- 18:32Speaker 5: without BREAKING i always hear pitching is not a natural.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Emotion overhead throwing is not a. Natural it's exceptionally national.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Natural people have been doing it for centuries, hunting throwing
- 18:45Speaker 5: rocks at a. Rabbit but what's not natural is doing
- 18:48Speaker 5: it from a mound at one hundred miles an hour
- 18:51Speaker 5: over and. Over that's the problems that we have is
- 18:54Speaker 5: this all comes down to very very specific.
- 18:56Speaker 1: Function, well we have a question here in our chat
- 19:00Speaker 1: From sicilian eighty. Seven he wants us to specifically ask
- 19:03Speaker 1: you about Trey Ya savage's shoulder. Impingement so Obviously slope,
- 19:08Speaker 1: playing Trey Ya savage coming up last, year meteorically on the,
- 19:12Speaker 1: scene obviously a good future ahead of, him but also
- 19:15Speaker 1: just The jay's slew of pitching. Injuries let's start with
- 19:17Speaker 1: You savage.
- 19:18Speaker 5: First, yeah He savage is an interesting one because shoulder
- 19:21Speaker 5: impingement tends to be something of a garbage. Diagnosis you
- 19:25Speaker 5: say it when there's nothing else to. Say something's, inflammed
- 19:29Speaker 5: something got. Pinged we don't know the exact. Specifics but
- 19:32Speaker 5: with You, savage it has been that long ago since
- 19:35Speaker 5: it was in the, draft AND i can remember teams
- 19:37Speaker 5: talking about that strange. Motion it was strange then when
- 19:41Speaker 5: they didn't realize how effective it. Was but he did
- 19:43Speaker 5: have shoulder problems both HIS i forget whether he came
- 19:48Speaker 5: out as a. Jender his last two years of, college
- 19:50Speaker 5: he had some shoulder problems that held him. Back that's
- 19:52Speaker 5: why he dropped to The j's in the, draft so
- 19:55Speaker 5: he does have a history of. This he is going
- 19:58Speaker 5: to be throwing later this, week so it's certainly not
- 20:02Speaker 5: looking like a long term. Problem but these, impingements it's
- 20:06Speaker 5: really more of a symptom rather than a. Diagnosis they've
- 20:10Speaker 5: got to figure out what's, swelling what's causing the, problem
- 20:14Speaker 5: and get that out of it at the, root rather
- 20:17Speaker 5: than just having to treat the symptoms over and. Over
- 20:19Speaker 5: you can treat inflammation very, easily you, know pop an ad,
- 20:21Speaker 5: bill get a dose, pack but it's not sustainable over
- 20:25Speaker 5: the long.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Term you talked about his awkward, motion questioning. It do
- 20:32Speaker 3: we look at an awkward motion that was extremely successful and,
- 20:36Speaker 3: say oh, man you, know maybe that's going to be an,
- 20:39Speaker 3: injury or do we look at the t spine location
- 20:43Speaker 3: and based on how far his head?
- 20:45Speaker 5: Is you, know.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Should should the public know more about what teams are
- 20:50Speaker 3: looking at so that you can, say, okay well you
- 20:53Speaker 3: know what he throws exactly like somebody who throws with
- 20:56Speaker 3: their head. Upright the difference is he's just coming more
- 20:59Speaker 3: at this.
- 20:59Speaker 5: Animal, yeah you can go to The Chad bradford extreme
- 21:03Speaker 5: where you Know Chad. Bradford if everybody remembers. Him he
- 21:06Speaker 5: wasn't a side arm, pitcher he wasn't a submarine. Pitcher
- 21:08Speaker 5: he just bent at the waist so far that his
- 21:11Speaker 5: knuckles were scraping the. Ground and, YEAH i think we
- 21:13Speaker 5: should know more about. Biomechanics And i'm SURE aj has
- 21:17Speaker 5: watched his good Friend Chuck wolf on my Last Injury territory.
- 21:20Speaker 5: Show for, You, savage it's an unusual. Motion it's not,
- 21:24Speaker 5: bad and do you change it at this? Point he's
- 21:26Speaker 5: done it for all these. Years it's more difficult to
- 21:28Speaker 5: change a picture at this stage than just figure out
- 21:32Speaker 5: what's going wrong with. It so the fact that somebody like, You,
- 21:35Speaker 5: savage is unusual to the point that he's such an outlier,
- 21:40Speaker 5: BIOMECHANICALLY i don't think it's bad until he starts to.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Break and at that, point what's the least you can
- 21:46Speaker 5: do to get him back to a healthy. Point, alana
- 21:51Speaker 5: you brought up the rest of the injuries over. THERE
- 21:53Speaker 5: i think they're slow Playing bieber to get him. Back
- 21:56Speaker 5: watch his workload after him going Into october last. Year
- 21:58Speaker 5: i'm all worried about bury us because that stress reaction
- 22:02Speaker 5: in his elbow is an unusual one and it's not
- 22:05Speaker 5: like he's gonna stop Throwing.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Hey if you hit the age where everything feels a
- 22:10Speaker 3: little bit more difficult The jim, yes but everything like
- 22:14Speaker 3: energy crashes in the.
- 22:15Speaker 6: Afternoon you know you might have been reading about LOW
- 22:21Speaker 6: t and you see your doctor about it and they
- 22:23Speaker 6: want to give you basically shots every week for the
- 22:26Speaker 6: rest of your. Life oh, cool that sounds. Fun and
- 22:29Speaker 6: then you dig deeper and you realize what you're signing up,
- 22:31Speaker 6: for and it's three grand a year to shut down
- 22:33Speaker 6: your body's natural production.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Forever that is.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Brutal Mars men gives you the same benefits of optimized testosterone, energy, strength,
- 22:42Speaker 3: focus without shutting your body.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Down no, synthetics no, needles no.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Dependencies it's like hitting the reset button on your hormone
- 22:48Speaker 3: factory instead of shutting.
- 22:50Speaker 6: It down for a limited. Time our listeners get fifty
- 22:53Speaker 6: percent off for it, life plus free shipping and three

- 23:07Speaker 6: our show and tell them we sent.
- 23:08Speaker 4: You hey on The Blue, Jays Max scherzer has talked
- 23:11Speaker 4: To Ken rosenthal about his how he learned he started
- 23:14Speaker 4: playing the piano and made his thumb.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Better.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Right he told me, this AND i actually asked him
- 23:19Speaker 4: about it on the, air AND i forgot what he
- 23:20Speaker 4: had told, Me and then he told me he had
- 23:22Speaker 4: to Tell ken. First so Kudos max for telling talking
- 23:27Speaker 4: To ken about. It BUT i had forgotten he had told,
- 23:29Speaker 4: me AND i had forgotten what he had told. Me
- 23:31Speaker 4: so is this a? Thing is this a good way
- 23:33Speaker 4: for him to? WORK i, MEAN i know he said
- 23:35Speaker 4: that now that the story came. OUT i remember him
- 23:37Speaker 4: saying he did it kind of as a thing with his,
- 23:39Speaker 4: kids and then he's, like, wait this made my hand
- 23:41Speaker 4: feel better and then he was able to pitch.
- 23:43Speaker 5: Again is this the thing going?
- 23:44Speaker 4: Forward teams can look at as odd ways to rehab, stuff.
- 23:48Speaker 2: You, Know?
- 23:49Speaker 5: YEAH i think.
- 23:49Speaker 2: SO i don't.
- 23:50Speaker 5: Know if you guys are familiar with a company called
- 23:53Speaker 5: Flex Pro. Grip they have a very interesting kind of finger.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Strengthener it looks, like you, know the glove that thanos
- 24:02Speaker 5: war And, avengers but it actually can measure the finger
- 24:07Speaker 5: strength and train. It so this is. Similar you, know
- 24:10Speaker 5: if teams want to get a piano rather than flex.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Progrips i'm. Sure i'm not sure how the cost works,
- 24:16Speaker 5: out but, yeah anything that, strengthens anything that gets him
- 24:21Speaker 5: moving those. Fingers it's an ingenious solution and ONE i
- 24:25Speaker 5: don't think anybody. Recommended but maybe we'll see more more
- 24:28Speaker 5: piano playing.
- 24:29Speaker 3: PITCHERS i have one general injury question because it's the
- 24:34Speaker 3: beginning of the, year because we're talking about. Injuries no
- 24:38Speaker 3: matter what the largest contract is in, baseball no contract
- 24:41Speaker 3: will ever supersede the injury. Contracts do you feel like
- 24:46Speaker 3: there's not enough because if a manager doesn't win A World,
- 24:50Speaker 3: series he gets. Fired trainers don't keep their team. Healthy
- 24:55Speaker 3: they just come back the next year because it's freak.
- 24:58Speaker 3: Injuries should there be or win will there be in
- 25:01Speaker 3: the next like ten. Years an organization that, says, okay
- 25:05Speaker 3: we're putting more on certain people so that we can
- 25:08Speaker 3: devalue or so we can take away all the extreme
- 25:12Speaker 3: value lost in.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Injuries, yes there are teams that do. That we've seen
- 25:18Speaker 5: more turnover in the sports, science sports, performance the medical.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Departments we've seen more directors of sports, performance directors of athletic,
- 25:26Speaker 5: training people that oversee. IT i had an interview With Nick,
- 25:32Speaker 5: kenney who's NOW i forget the title they gave. Him
- 25:34Speaker 5: he used to be the head athletic. Trainer now he
- 25:36Speaker 5: kind of oversees all the operations on that side of. Things,
- 25:41Speaker 5: YEAH i do think they're holding people more. Accountable it
- 25:43Speaker 5: used to be kind of a job for. Life it's
- 25:46Speaker 5: certainly not. That and more we're seeing more and more
- 25:48Speaker 5: young people get into. It we're seeing people coming from other.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Sports there are teams that are bringing over people out of,
- 25:54Speaker 5: soccer out Of olympic. Sports so there are teams that
- 25:59Speaker 5: are taking this more. Seriously there are teams that are
- 26:01Speaker 5: seeing better. Results they are teams that are just saying
- 26:05Speaker 5: part of the. GAME i can remember a general manager
- 26:08Speaker 5: telling me that every dollar he spent on something that
- 26:11Speaker 5: wasn't payroll was a dollar. Wasted SO i don't think
- 26:16Speaker 5: teams yet see the sunk cost as a problem because they're,
- 26:20Speaker 5: saying you, know there are all the contracts are, guaranteed
- 26:23Speaker 5: few of them are. Insured they're willing to tolerate next man,
- 26:26Speaker 5: up not realizing the next man up wasn't as. Good so,
- 26:29Speaker 5: YEAH i think more teams need to take this. Seriously
- 26:31Speaker 5: it's one of the things That i've been pounding the
- 26:33Speaker 5: table for for twenty, years, Right.
- 26:35Speaker 1: WELL i haven't been on with you, yet So i'm.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Interested is that a bourbon collection behind? You are those
- 26:42Speaker 1: the things that are cheering your injury? Ailments what do
- 26:45Speaker 1: we got going on behind?
- 26:46Speaker 5: You, yeah that's my home. Bar and it's not just,
- 26:50Speaker 5: bourbon but there are. Some but, yeah when you talk
- 26:53Speaker 5: to people about doom and gloom all, Day i'm a
- 26:56Speaker 5: happy little grim. Reaper so we have to have a
- 27:00Speaker 5: little sip of something to get me through the day
- 27:02Speaker 5: As i'm dealing with more tray savage, injuries more picture.
- 27:06Speaker 5: Injuries but, yeah everybody's got to have a. Hobby, LISTEN
- 27:11Speaker 5: i get.
- 27:11Speaker 1: It your collection kind of rivals that of my husband's
- 27:14Speaker 1: as well when it comes to. Bourbon BEFORE i let you,
- 27:16Speaker 1: go The marlins Outfielder Kyle, stowers he's going to start
- 27:19Speaker 1: the season on the il with the hamstring. Injury and
- 27:21Speaker 1: will you know better than most hamstrings to, me are like.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Obliques they're.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Tricky what more can you tell us about this particular
- 27:27Speaker 1: injury and perhaps the timetable for.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Him, yeah it's gonna be a couple weeks on. This
- 27:32Speaker 5: he's been dealing with this off and, on and that's
- 27:34Speaker 5: one of the reasons they're dealing with. It it's grade,
- 27:36Speaker 5: one so it's the lowest. Grade it's writing a belly
- 27:39Speaker 5: of the. Muscle what they don't want this to become
- 27:42Speaker 5: is a problem that. Recurs that's the word you have with,
- 27:45Speaker 5: hamstrings you, Know, Eric back to your, point teams are
- 27:49Speaker 5: not very serious about hamstrings and. Acls there are hamstring
- 27:53Speaker 5: AND acl prevention programs that in studies over and over
- 27:59Speaker 5: soccer team spend time on hamstrings AND acl prevention programs
- 28:03Speaker 5: and have seen fifty percent. Reduction, now acls aren't a
- 28:06Speaker 5: huge problem in baseball the way they are for THE
- 28:11Speaker 5: nfl or football in, general but ham strings. Are and
- 28:15Speaker 5: there's not a lot of preventive work for stours this.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Month they're hoping we'll keep them going through the next
- 28:20Speaker 5: five six months of the season because The marlins have
- 28:24Speaker 5: certainly a long term timeline with the players that they
- 28:26Speaker 5: think will be there next. Time they're.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Good, well BEFORE i let you go, out you mentioned
- 28:32Speaker 4: that teams aren't spending money and need to look into.
- 28:34Speaker 4: This do you think and it's, changed AND i get
- 28:38Speaker 4: it's for the. Better you, know you have preventive, programs
- 28:40Speaker 4: and you have, messuses and you have, acupuncturists and you
- 28:44Speaker 4: have chiropractors, now, Right but WHEN i and again this
- 28:48Speaker 4: is not to be the old, man get off my.
- 28:49Speaker 4: LAWN i was told don't go in the training. Room
- 28:52Speaker 4: you don't go in the training. Room you figure out
- 28:53Speaker 4: how just to play no matter. What and now guys
- 28:56Speaker 4: are going in before they even get hurt to, say oh,
- 29:00Speaker 4: afraid my hamstrings is gonna get.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Hurt and again there's no right way or wrong. Way
- 29:04Speaker 5: this is the way it. Is and teams think it's.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Better but do you think there should be more of
- 29:08Speaker 4: an emphasis, on, hey, guys let's try not to get
- 29:11Speaker 4: hurt and not you, know because it's AGAIN i don't
- 29:14Speaker 4: want to judge anybody because everyone has a different.
- 29:16Speaker 5: Pain, tolerance, right BUT i know.
- 29:17Speaker 4: This one of the biggest sayings that we ever had
- 29:19Speaker 4: was you can't make the club and the tub, right
- 29:21Speaker 4: which meant if you're going to the training. Room and
- 29:24Speaker 4: we Had hermschneider who didn't want you in the training,
- 29:26Speaker 4: room one of the nicest guys in the, world but
- 29:27Speaker 4: he would make it just awful to go in there
- 29:30Speaker 4: because he'd be, like if the pain in the rehab
- 29:32Speaker 4: is worse than you trying not to get. Hurt so
- 29:34Speaker 4: do you think that this is why so many guys
- 29:37Speaker 4: maybe hamstrings or obliques or whatever it. Is And i'm
- 29:39Speaker 4: a guy that did an oblique later in my career
- 29:41Speaker 4: AND i was out two weeks and came back and played.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Right but is? That is there anything to?
- 29:47Speaker 4: That and Maybe i'm way, off And i'm fine being way.
- 29:49Speaker 5: Off it's just the mindset has. Changed the mindset has.
- 29:53Speaker 5: Changed we don't Have hermschneider, anymore one of the all time.
- 29:58Speaker 5: GREATS i actually did an artic, well this was back
- 30:01Speaker 5: WHEN i was With Sports, illustrated showing that he was
- 30:05Speaker 5: kind of like one of those subway punch. Cards he
- 30:06Speaker 5: had saved so much over a decade that he had
- 30:08Speaker 5: paid for an entire season's. Payroll so that, guy all
- 30:14Speaker 5: time great should be in The hall Of. Fame one
- 30:17Speaker 5: of the, things and you know this from being around,
- 30:19Speaker 5: him is he was very focused on the. Preventative he
- 30:22Speaker 5: was very focused on making sure people were, symmetrical that
- 30:26Speaker 5: they were in, balance that they were doing the kind of.
- 30:28Speaker 5: THINGS i think we need to have more of a
- 30:31Speaker 5: focus on the preventative rather than the rehab because prehabs,
- 30:34Speaker 5: hard you're already. Hurt the most predictive thing about injuries
- 30:38Speaker 5: is having been. Injured so if we could keep people
- 30:41Speaker 5: from being. Injured we talked about the thirty three percent
- 30:44Speaker 5: of pictures that have Had Tommy john. Surgery we haven't
- 30:47Speaker 5: figured out what the other sixty six percent are, doing,
- 30:50Speaker 5: Right SO i think there's a lot more we could.
- 30:53Speaker 5: DO i think we could put a lot more. MANPOWER
- 30:56Speaker 5: i think teams could. Share that's one of the things
- 30:58Speaker 5: that they don't. Do if somebody finds, something it's a state.
- 31:02Speaker 5: Secret SO i think there needs to be a lot
- 31:05Speaker 5: more of a research focus and figuring out what those
- 31:08Speaker 5: best practices. Are well good.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Stuff always appreciate the insight of.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Course oh go, ahead.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Will talk to my, Guy Chuck. Wilf he'll tell you
- 31:16Speaker 4: his thoughts On Tommy. JOHN i mean said had him
- 31:18Speaker 4: on the last. SHOW i know he'll tell you what
- 31:21Speaker 4: he thinks about. IT i, mean that was the guy
- 31:22Speaker 4: THAT i worked out with all off, season and he was.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Great he was he was movement, based he was, strength movement.
- 31:28Speaker 4: BASED i mean he was he was one of the. Best, so,
- 31:31Speaker 4: yeah enourage everybody.
- 31:32Speaker 5: To watch that. Show it came out Last. Friday, okay all,
- 31:36Speaker 5: right we'll check it.
