- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. Thank you for tapping on play
- 0:17and inviting me into your day because you and I, we've got
- 0:20some work to do. It's Monday.
- 0:22It is the 27th of November and we are now, oh, we've only got 3
- 0:29and a bit weeks left getting through the last parts of
- 0:33Isaiah. And this week we come to the end
- 0:37of this section, which is kind of the second broad section of
- 0:40Isaiah. This is the section where Isaiah
- 0:43is talking words of comfort from God to God's people who are
- 0:48exiled far away in Babylon. And there is a lot of talk about
- 0:53the servant and different different entities are going to
- 0:56be God's servant. At some point.
- 0:57Israel will be God's servant. At some point, Cyrus, who will
- 1:01lead down from Persia, who is going to be God's servant and
- 1:06will give what for to the the Babylonians for all of their
- 1:10nasty dealings, shall we say. And yes, there will also be some
- 1:14hints toward a messianic servant.
- 1:17So this is the time when God is talking about how he is going to
- 1:21restore his people in so many different ways, and not just His
- 1:24people, but His land for them too.
- 1:28So as we continue on this journey, let us put down
- 1:31whatever it is that's bubbling away in our brains on this busy
- 1:36old Monday and come before God and say, Holy Spirit, let us
- 1:41hear your words to us as we read through these words written down
- 1:46so long ago, but alive and well in your word today.
- 1:51You ready? Me too.
- 1:53Let's do it. Let's read together.
- 1:55Isaiah, chapter 53. Who has believed our message?
- 2:10To whom has the Lord revealed his powerful arm?
- 2:14My servant grew up in the Lord's presence like a 10° in shoot,
- 2:19like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or
- 2:22majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him.
- 2:27He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows acquainted with
- 2:32deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and
- 2:35looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not
- 2:39care. Yet it was our weakness he
- 2:43carried. It was our sorrows that weighed
- 2:46him down, and we thought his troubles were punishment from
- 2:49God, a punishment for his own sins.
- 2:53But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins.
- 2:58He was beaten so we could be whole.
- 3:01He was whipped so we could be healed.
- 3:05All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
- 3:08We have left God's paths to follow our own.
- 3:12Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
- 3:16He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a
- 3:19word. He was led like a lamb to the
- 3:22slaughter, and as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he
- 3:27did not open his mouth. Unjustly condemned, he was led
- 3:31away. No one cared that he died
- 3:33without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream.
- 3:38But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people.
- 3:43He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone, but he
- 3:48was buried like a criminal. He was put in a rich man's
- 3:51grave, but it was the Lord's good plan to crush him and cause
- 3:56him grief. Yet when his life is made and
- 3:59offering for sin, he will have many descendants.
- 4:04He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord's good plan will
- 4:08prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is
- 4:12accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied.
- 4:17And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make
- 4:21it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will
- 4:25bear all their sins. I will give him the honors of a
- 4:30victorious soldier. Because he exposed himself to
- 4:33death, he was counted among the rebels.
- 4:37He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.
- 4:52Our Lord written so long before Jesus time.
- 4:56We just cannot help seeing the profound parallels between
- 5:01Isaiah's words and what would be to come so far into the future.
- 5:09You are incredible and your plans extend deep into the
- 5:13future. In previous chapters Lord, you
- 5:16mock to the other gods because they don't know the future.
- 5:20Only you, Lord, only you hold the world and the future and our
- 5:25future in your hands. Let us never be tempted to trust
- 5:30in any other power other than you for our future with our
- 5:36plans. You are glorious.
- 5:40You are all knowing. You sit outside of time and
- 5:44space, but also intimately within them, journeying through
- 5:49each day with us. We love you when we praise you,
- 5:53and it's in Jesus name that we pray all these things.
- 5:57Amen.
