- 1:33Boyd, welcome back to Small Biz Florida.
- 1:35Thank you, Tom.
- 1:36I appreciate it.
- 1:37Hello again.
- 1:37Hey, listen, I always like talking to you because you know what?
- 1:40You give me hope for capital access for small businesses.
- 1:45That's what we're here for.
- 1:45Yes.
- 1:46You're probably the most positive guy in capital access.
- 1:51Thank you.
- 1:52All right.
- 1:54So, Boyd, let's start as we always do.
- 1:58Just a little bit of your background, your pathway to creating Otro Financial.
- 2:03Yeah, thank you.
- 2:04Well, I've been a serial entrepreneur most of my adult life.
- 2:07I've started or purchased now eight different businesses.
- 2:11That's up since last year.
- 2:12I just love the world of small business.
- 2:14I absolutely believe it is the heartbeat or the backbone would be a better metaphor.
- 2:20And I started Otro about four years ago now after I was denied a loan to buy a small business.
- 2:28The banker said, that's too small for me.
- 2:31I'm not going to make enough commission to be worth my time.
- 2:34I didn't know bankers could say that.
- 2:36What?
- 2:36I didn't know you could say that.
- 2:38So, I found an alternative lender.
- 2:40He was horrible and terrible.
- 2:42I couldn't move ahead with him.
- 2:43I went and got the training and the introductions I needed so I could help other people who are in my same situation.
- 2:49Just, you're too small for the banks to care about.
- 2:51Right.
- 2:52We've since grown now and we can help just about anybody anytime.
- 2:55But our heart is with that startup universe, two years old or younger.
- 3:00That's the hardest time for them to get money.
- 3:03And that's where we specialize.
- 3:04Okay.
- 3:05Yeah.
- 3:05I couldn't agree more.
- 3:07And yes, we hear that story a couple of times a day.
- 3:11Yeah.
- 3:11So, talk to us a little bit about your presentation.
- 3:17Love the topic.
- 3:18Always love the topic.
- 3:19When banks say no.
- 3:20Yes.
- 3:21Kind of take me to a high level summary of that presentation.
- 3:24Yeah.
- 3:24Yeah.
- 3:25I'm presenting later today again.
- 3:27And I walked through my own story of being denied and how I took it personally and became a broker.
- 3:34But the most important part of the presentation is where I explain four specific funding options that are available to a startup.
- 3:44Even when the bank has already said no, which Forbes magazine reported, it happens 87% of the time.
- 3:51And that's just for businesses.
- 3:52I mean, startups have an even tougher road.
- 3:54So, I explain those options and put it in as simple terms as I can to give hope to entrepreneurs that, look, even if the bank said no, it's not the end of the road.
- 4:04So, here are all these other options we can look at.
- 4:06So, hit me.
- 4:07Give me my four options, a high level.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:10The four, the one's called the syndicated line of credit, which can aggregate 0% of interest credit cards for at least a year or longer with no interest.
- 4:19There are personal term loans.
- 4:21And I just met with my friends at Brickle who we work with.
- 4:23They have a new startup fund to replace what the SBA took away recently.
- 4:28So, I'm very excited about that.
- 4:29There's something new called a business purpose home equity line of credit.
- 4:34So, and then another one, which I think is occasionally excellent for some people, is using the ROBS Act, which allows you to take personal retirement funds and invest in your own business or buy a business.
- 4:46Yeah.
- 4:47Because what's a retirement fund?
- 4:48You're investing in other people's businesses.
- 4:49So, you may want to do that yourself.
- 4:51Those are the four that we walked through.
- 4:54Very nice.
- 4:56Yes.
- 4:57I had on the podcast a little earlier today, a gentleman to talk about.
- 5:02Kirk.
- 5:02A cellophon.
- 5:03Yeah.
- 5:03About the, I had forgotten that name for it, but it's called the ROBS.
- 5:10ROBS Act.
- 5:11ROBS Act.
- 5:11Rollover for Business Startups.
- 5:13Wow.
- 5:14Okay.
- 5:14I got to remember the ROBS Act.
- 5:16Yeah.
- 5:16Well, that, you know, again, you know, it is a simplistic way to break it down.
- 5:22You, you know, just because you get that initial note, there are some other options, clearly other options.
- 5:27And people just don't know this.
- 5:29So, let's talk just real briefly about this whole, specifically the startup.
- 5:35Uh-huh.
- 5:38You know, that call comes in multiple times a day into our SBDC Center.
- 5:42I'm starting a business.
- 5:43I, I want to come talk about a, a grant.
- 5:45Well, my first reaction to that, my first answer to that is, I don't know of any grants for startups.
- 5:53Yeah.
- 5:53Hard to get.
- 5:54If you, if you know of one, we're happy to help you maybe apply for it, submit the application, fill out the application.
- 6:00But I don't know of any grants.
- 6:02But what is available to a pure startup?
- 6:07Are there, are there micro loans out there that will help a startup?
- 6:12Very, very few and hard to find.
- 6:15Generally, you have to be in business at least six months to 12 months before anybody will loan the money.
- 6:20Ascendus is a great resource, the Black Business Investment Fund.
- 6:24But again, six months and 12 months respectively.
- 6:26Yeah.
- 6:26So for the true startup, unless you have tons of cash or the bank of mom and dad, which is always good terms, people seek bank financing and they go in with a business plan and meet with a bank and they're like, we can't help you.
- 6:40Not knowing these other options are out there.
- 6:42Right.
- 6:42So, you know, it's just, it's nice to know and confirm that we are giving people somewhat accurate information when I tell them that it's just almost virtually impossible.
- 6:54And to your point, you know, Ascendus even requires six months in business.
- 6:59Right.
- 7:00Yeah, exactly.
- 7:00And Ascendus is going to look at three months worth of your bank statements.
- 7:06Yes.
- 7:06They're going to want to see cash flow.
- 7:07They have to see that there's growth.
- 7:09Right.
- 7:09Yeah.
- 7:09Right.
- 7:10And again, I guess once you've been in that space for the six months, the one year, whatever that minimum is, what is that maybe first step?
- 7:23Is it an Ascendus or is there a micro loan under the SBA?
- 7:28What is available to that next stage?
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:31Good question.
- 7:32Micro loans are usually up to $50,000.
- 7:35But the SBA reported last year that the average disbursement is $13,000.
- 7:41Which doesn't really provide a ton of help, honestly.
- 7:43Right.
- 7:44Ideally.
- 7:45That is a very, very small business.
- 7:46It's a, that's a bootstrap.
- 7:48Right.
- 7:49The goal, our goal is to get people started, get them funded, keep them alive for the first two years.
- 7:54When they hit that two year mark, then suddenly the banks care about you because you have the history that you didn't have before.
- 8:01Right.
- 8:01And the ultimate goal is to get somebody into an SBA loan, refinance your startup costs.
- 8:07Because at the beginning, it's going to be more expensive because this is a lot of risk and unsecured stuff.
- 8:11The goal is to keep them alive, get them to that two year mark, get them into an SBA loan.
- 8:16They're going to get the best, best rate, best terms.
- 8:19I mean, that's, that's the best.
- 8:21And you're, and you're probably primarily talking about a 7A.
- 8:23Is that?
- 8:24Usually a 7A.
- 8:25Okay.
- 8:25Absolutely.
- 8:25How low can we go on a 7A?
- 8:28Ah, I have never asked that question.
- 8:32Typically, typically the people that we'll work with, the bankers who do a 7A, usually won't touch it if it's under a hundred.
- 8:39Because again, it's not worth my time.
- 8:41I won't make commission on it.
- 8:42Right.
- 8:42So, and some banks, this guy, he does the 100 to 250.
- 8:47This guy does three quarter billion and higher.
- 8:49So they all have their specialties.
- 8:51Okay.
- 8:51How does, how does engagement work with Otro Financial?
- 8:57Does, how does it all start?
- 9:00Does a business contact you and say, I need capital.
- 9:04How does all that look?
- 9:06How does the engagement start?
- 9:07The best way to engage us is to email or go to the website and fill out the application.
- 9:13That triggers a response from us.
- 9:15We'll then send you a link to do a free credit report.
- 9:19And if you're above a certain level, we're happy to talk.
- 9:22If we're below a certain level, we have now, we have an in-house credit repair team that we can send them to.
- 9:28Get them prepared and up to speed.
- 9:30And then when they're fundable, then we'll talk again.
- 9:32Okay.
- 9:33And I know since the last time you were a guest on Small Biz Florida, you've, you have crafted and authored a couple of books.
- 9:40Talk about the books.
- 9:41Yeah.
- 9:42Well, I took the, the, when banks say no presentation that I'm doing today and really fleshed it out.
- 9:46Give it much more detail than I can in a 45, 50 minute presentation.
- 9:50So when banks say no is now available for anybody.
- 9:53My, I do another one about business credit, teaching businesses what it is, how to get it, how to build it.
- 10:00We've turned that into a book as well.
- 10:01Carol, my partner and I, we wrote the Immigrant's Guide to Building Credit and Qualifying for Small Business Loans in the USA in English and Spanish.
- 10:12Carol was an immigrant from Colombia 20 years ago.
- 10:15So he wrote that.
- 10:16We're almost just giving away free because we want people to learn.
- 10:19And the last one we wrote to help youth and teenagers, it's called Smells Like Teen Credit.
- 10:25And so it teaches kids how to establish, how, how the game works.
- 10:30Right.
- 10:30How to get ready for adulthood.
- 10:32Very nice.
- 10:33And then I know you have created some sort of training program for women.
- 10:39This is the first time I've spoken about it publicly.
- 10:42I'm going to spring it on them at the end of my presentation today, but we're putting together a 12 week training program,
- 10:47combining classic entrepreneurship training with fundability, credit repair, and introduction to alternative funding sources.
- 10:55We're calling it Go Biz Girl, the Startup Academy.
- 11:00And our target really are going to be single mothers who need a side hustle or something to break the cycle and create a legacy and something that will benefit their family, hopefully for generations.
- 11:14That's the goal.
- 11:15And, you know, you touch on a good, you know, topic is the side hustle.
- 11:20This, you know, in the world of borrowing money, accessing capital for this startup, probably one of the most effective ways to do this is create this startup as a side hustle.
- 11:35Yes.
- 11:36And keep your daytime job.
- 11:38Yes.
- 11:38Is that a fair statement?
- 11:39Very fair statement.
- 11:40Yep.
- 11:41Grow it on the side.
- 11:42And when it finally matures and can handle everything you need, that's when you make the switch.
- 11:46Right.
- 11:47Not only that, but it would also let you build up that one year, two year history, right?
- 11:53Get some history.
- 11:54Right.
- 11:55Exactly.
- 11:56And then you can go borrow the money because now you've been in business for two years.
- 11:59Right.
- 11:59It's much easier at that point.
- 12:01Sure.
- 12:01Yeah.
- 12:01Okay.
- 12:01All right.
- 12:02I like it.
- 12:03It is our good friend, Boyd Karen, who is the founder, CEO of Otro Financial, helping all kinds of businesses, all sizes to get access to the capital they need to start, grow and succeed.
- 12:19Boyd, where do people find you and how do they access these books and where do they find Otro?
- 12:25Yeah.
- 12:26Thank you.
- 12:27All the books are on Amazon.
- 12:29A paperback and an e-book, a Kindle.
- 12:31The best way to reach me is, again, email me, boyd at otrofinancial.com.
- 12:37Go to the website.
- 12:39Contact me there.
