- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Water bombers will return to Port Hope
- 0:09Speaker 2: Simpson today to fight a wildfire burning near the community
- 0:12Speaker 2: that prompted a state of emergency to be declared. A
- 0:16Speaker 2: temporary shelter was set up in Mary's Harbor, while the
- 0:19Speaker 2: town of St. Louis also offered up space for those
- 0:22Speaker 2: who choose to leave town. Ground crews, including the local
- 0:25Speaker 2: fire department, monitored the situation overnight after the water bomber
- 0:29Speaker 2: and helicopter had to give up the effort at nightfall.
- 0:32Speaker 2: The Department of Forestry says a water bomber from Happy
- 0:35Speaker 2: Valley Goose Bay will rejoin the firefighting effort this morning
- 0:38Speaker 2: and will be on the ready at 9. Meanwhile, a
- 0:41Speaker 2: second aircraft in Gander will be ready at 10. However,
- 0:45Speaker 2: the department says water bombers cannot fly if the temperature
- 0:48Speaker 2: is 7 degrees or lower, and water bombers can only
- 0:51Speaker 2: fly for four hours at a time before they must
- 0:54Speaker 2: land to refuel and give pilots a break. The department
- 0:58Speaker 2: is encouraging residents to follow official channels like the Forestry's
- 1:02Speaker 2: Facebook page or the Town of Port Hope Simpsons page
- 1:05Speaker 2: for the latest accurate information. Fuel prices are on the
- 1:10Speaker 2: rise this morning, the biggest jump being diesel, which is
- 1:14Speaker 2: up by about 11 cents. Furnace oil increases by over
- 1:18Speaker 2: 9 cents per liter. Stove oil in Lab West jumps
- 1:21Speaker 2: by about 10 cents. Gas is up 2.5 cents. Ottawa
- 1:27Speaker 2: is going to extend the suspension of the federal excise
- 1:30Speaker 2: tax on fuel until the end of January, but then
- 1:33Speaker 2: will bring it back in two stages. It amounts to $ 0. 10
- 1:37Speaker 2: on gasoline, $ 0. 11 on aviation fuel, and $ 0. 04 on diesel.
- 1:43Speaker 2: The tax will be restored at 50% in February and
- 1:46Speaker 2: March and 100% as of April 1st. The price of
- 1:51Speaker 2: fuel has jumped substantially since the conflict in the Middle East.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Francois-Philippe Champagne, the Minister of Finance and National Revenue, made
- 1:59Speaker 2: the announcement at a news conference.
- 2:02Speaker 3: This is real relief right now. Relief for families that
- 2:06Speaker 3: are commuting to work, like many that I've had the
- 2:09Speaker 3: chance to meet here, driving their children to activities or
- 2:13Speaker 3: managing the cost of everyday life. These savings add up.
- 2:18Speaker 3: For truckers.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I'm sure there are many that are watching today. Farmers
- 2:23Speaker 3: across our nation, builders and small businesses, lower fuel costs,
- 2:28Speaker 3: help costs down across the country.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Government is replacing over 100 defibrillators, also known as AEDs,
- 2:37Speaker 2: in schools across the province. Education Minister Paul Dinh says
- 2:42Speaker 2: the Heart and Stroke Foundation provided AEDs for schools back
- 2:45Speaker 2: in 2020. After a recent assessment, it was determined that
- 2:49Speaker 2: over 100 machines needed to be replaced due to things
- 2:53Speaker 2: like expired pads and batteries. About $ 250, 000 has been allotted
- 2:58Speaker 2: for the new machines, which are on order. Katie Green,
- 3:02Speaker 2: VP for Newfoundland and Labrador with the Heart and Stroke Foundation,
- 3:05Speaker 2: says AEDs are very easy to use.
- 3:09Speaker 1: They walk you through step by step. They're not going
- 3:11Speaker 1: to administer a shock unless it's needed. And so really
- 3:15Speaker 1: our importance for certainly the student level is an exposure
- 3:18Speaker 1: to that and a comfort level, knowing that anyone can
- 3:20Speaker 1: grab an AED and it is easy to use. They
- 3:22Speaker 1: know where to find it and what to do next.
- 3:24Speaker 2: After spending millions of dollars on it, the provincial government
- 3:28Speaker 2: has given up on the idea of having a large
- 3:31Speaker 2: indoor dome on Kenmount Crossing. Now it wants to sell.
- 3:35Speaker 2: The previous Liberal government bought the 100,000 square foot structure,
- 3:40Speaker 2: which is about the size of two football fields. but
- 3:43Speaker 2: it has never been unpacked. It was part of the
- 3:46Speaker 2: plan to build a new hospital at Kenmount Crossing, but
- 3:49Speaker 2: the PC government scrapped that project and is now getting
- 3:52Speaker 2: rid of the dome. Barry Petten, the minister responsible for infrastructure,
- 3:57Speaker 2: said early this year that government had spent about $ 5
- 4:00Speaker 2: million on the structure.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I mean, that's the whole idea when it was being pitched,
- 4:04Speaker 1: it was the domes with the hospital.
- 4:05Speaker 3: The dome is like an inland Kenmount Crossing up on
- 4:08Speaker 3: the hill by itself, and it never really, I mean,
- 4:09Speaker 3: it really made no sense.
- 4:11Speaker 1: That was the rationale.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Minister Pettin says there are a number of potential purchasers,
- 4:15Speaker 2: so it's being put up on tender. The Canadian Heritage
- 4:19Speaker 2: Minute dedicated to the response of Gander and surrounding communities
- 4:23Speaker 2: to the fallout of the 9-11 terrorist attacks has been unveiled.
- 4:27Speaker 2: The one-minute video was first screened during a ceremony at
- 4:30Speaker 2: Gander International Airport Tuesday night.
- 4:33Speaker 3: American 101, I don't care who you have on board.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You are instructed to land at Gander now. This is
- 4:38Speaker 2: Mayor Elliott.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Hang on.
- 4:41Speaker 3: 38 planes.
- 4:45Speaker 2: The video features Rick Mercer as then-Gander Mayor Claude Elliott
- 4:48Speaker 2: and shows scenes of the response at the airport, people's
- 4:51Speaker 2: responses to the shocking images of the attacks on TV,
- 4:55Speaker 2: and the compassion shown by residents to the stranded passengers.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The video can be viewed at vocm.com. That's your news.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland.
