- 1:17Original air date November the twenty sixth of nineteen fifty and the title is
- 1:22The Terrible ten Type The Adventures of the Saints, starring Vincent Price. The
- 1:57Saints, based on characters created by Leslie Trotteris and known to millions from books,
- 2:01magazines, and motion pictures. The robin Hood of Modern Crime now comes
- 2:06transcribe to radio, starring Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor Vincent Price as the saint
- 2:22on my way. Mister Templar, hands up, I said, hands up?
- 2:30Are you crazy or something? Do you want me to shoot you?
- 2:31Look, I'm not crazy. I'm not even shopping to go right back inside.
- 2:35Wait a minutely the snot lose her head because John over there, mister
- 2:38Templar, mister Temple. But I ain't okay sitting down. But I still
- 2:46aid, mister Templar, I don't think you can escape what's coming to you
- 2:47by lying to me. I never lie to Blunch. And besides, my
- 2:52name is Louis. Mister Templar invited me over to dine, you know,
- 2:54for dinner. I drive a cab. Does mister Templar drive a cab?
- 2:59No? Will you see that I'm not, mister Temple. It does not.
- 3:02Where's your cab? If you're a cab driver out in the street,
- 3:07you're trying to trick me into leading lady. You can't keep a cabin in
- 3:09a pop and what with the landlord says, stop trying to fool me.
- 3:13Just just give me that picture. What picture? I'm Sally Blair, I'm
- 3:19LOWI I'm pleased to meet I want my sister's picture. I haven't got your
- 3:22sister's picture. I haven't even got my picture. I'm warning if I have
- 3:27to kill you to get it up, I'll kill you. That's against the
- 3:30law. Ask any police. This is your last chance. Are you going
- 3:34to give me the picture? Or will I have to shoot you? I
- 3:38think you better shoot me, miss Blair. Mister Temple, I'm very glad
- 3:42to see you. I didn't knock. It's not polite, but well it
- 3:46is my apartment. What seems to be the trouble. I all of a
- 3:53sudden she's crying, so I noticed. Look, I don't like to mention
- 3:57this in front of a crying woman, mister Temple, but that's her gun
- 4:00she's still got in her hand. Yes, I think I'll take it,
- 4:02Miss Blair. Thank you. It wasn't loaded. It wasn't a lot.
- 4:11So what was I scared about, Miss Blair? I'm a fool, probably,
- 4:15although a pretty one. Who is your sister, Valerie Marsh But you
- 4:20already know the he I do now. I didn't before you told me,
- 4:24but you must have known. You have her picture, and that a picture
- 4:27of her doing what sunbathing at the beach in Miami with Pete, mister Templer,
- 4:32you know Pete, of course would not be mister Marsh. Presumably,
- 4:36then the picture of missus Marsh with a friend in Miami, probably taken at
- 4:42a time when she had told her husband she was elsewhere, would be valuable
- 4:45for what a divorce case. Now you're admitting you knew all about it.
- 4:48I'm being bright, humor. Maid. Your name's Blair, your sister's name
- 4:53is Marsh. You're not wearing a wedding ring, however, therefore it's your
- 4:56sister who must be married and to a man named Marsh. Simple maybe for
- 5:00guys that went to college. Me I played hooky from kindergarten. To me,
- 5:03it ain't simple, but it's true, am I right? Miss Blair?
- 5:05I don't know, because you should have known all these things before this,
- 5:11because after all, you did have my sister's picture. Who told you
- 5:15that Valerie's husband Theodore Marsh and he ought to know, wasn't he? I
- 5:18don't know. Let's go ask you, mister Temple. You're walking into alliance
- 5:31then I'm driving there in a cab. Yeah, but your name mate Daniel.
- 5:34No, however, Miss Blair needs help, right, Miss Blair?
- 5:38It isn't help. It's well, it's clearing things up. Well, perhaps
- 5:42we can get started on that right away. Exactly what did your sister's husband,
- 5:46Theodore Marsh say in reference to me? Well, after echold Valry,
- 5:48he was going to divorce her. He said, you had a picture of
- 5:51her and Pete taken in Miami two months ago. Where was he at the
- 5:55time? Out west? Someplace on business? Your sister really was in Miami.
- 5:59Yes, she was at the beach with b Yes, beat what Brian?
- 6:03But of course it was the merest coincidence. No, Pete's in love
- 6:08with Valerie. But how about Valerie? I don't know, except that she'd
- 6:12never do anything it would endanger her marriage. I take it to your brother
- 6:15in law, Mister Theodore Marsh is very wealthy. Then he is loaded up.
- 6:20That is yes, Miss, here is either the Marsh residence or Grant's
- 6:28tomb. It's the Marsh resident, okay, but how can you tell Grant's
- 6:30tomb is smaller? And Miss Blapp thank you, Louisa. Will you wait,
- 6:39I'll wait. I wouldn't even mind. All right, I'm sorry about
- 6:42the dinner, that's all right. Would you like to go and get some
- 6:44dd while you're waiting, I should say, not what kind of guy you
- 6:47think I am? You asked me to dinner. I'm gonna have dinner with
- 6:50you if I have to wait till breakfast, All right, Louis, Come
- 6:54on, miss Lay, mister templar, Oh, come now, you can't
- 6:58be formal with a man you are going to call me Simon, Simon,
- 7:01don't tell anybody about my trying to shoot you. I won't. I really
- 7:08should have had a manicure before I touched that button. Tell me is it
- 7:12solid gold or only gold plated? And everything that theato or buys is solid
- 7:15gold? The poor man must be weighed down. Good evening, miss Sellie.
- 7:20Hello Graves, come in, Simon Graves. Where is missus Marsh in
- 7:27the music room? Man? Come on, Simon, miss Sellie. Yes,
- 7:30missus Marsh may not welcome any visitors, she said, not. Well,
- 7:36that's all right, she'll see us as you say this. Sei Graves
- 7:42is a very nice butler. Well, his hair is hardly snow white.
- 7:46However, all butler's used to be young sometime or other. I don't know.
- 7:48I always thought they were kept in the cellar till age like wine.
- 7:54This is the music room. Well, it's a little smaller than kannegge Hall.
- 7:59No, bubt, who's there? I'm sorry. I hope I didn't
- 8:01upset you, darling. Sir, you couldn't upset anyone. You're too wholesome.
- 8:09This is mister Templar. Oh, how do you do, mister Templar
- 8:13the detective? Well, not exactly. Oh, shouldn't you be muttering somewhere
- 8:16with my husband in a dark corner I don't know him well, or possibly
- 8:20lurking in a hotel corridor. I never look its analogy, although I will
- 8:24admit you surprise me, do I? You don't look at all like the
- 8:28kind of man I thought you'd be. You should have been small and sly,
- 8:31greasy, your hat pulled over your eyes, a cigarette dangling from your
- 8:35lips. You know, I once knew a man who looked exactly like that.
- 8:39Oh, one of your associates. No, he happened to be the
- 8:41professor of ethical philosophy at Harvard. Valerie stopped flirting with Simon. Besides,
- 8:46you're wasting time, He says. He never had a picture of you and
- 8:50was never hired by Theodore to do anything. Then why did Theodore say,
- 8:54I don't know but I believe Simon look at him. Yes, I'm looking,
- 9:00yes, And if I'm turning a bee thread, it's because it's very
- 9:03warm. And shouldn't we be asking that question of mister Marsh? Oh,
- 9:07yes, of course, Sally Darling, will you get Theodore? He's in
- 9:11his study all right, Bally. What is mister marsh studying in his study
- 9:18the labels on bottles of old whiskey? Oh, now that's a fascinating subject.
- 9:26You're a little on the fascinating side yourself. Yes, but I don't
- 9:30have a million dollars. We like theato. Some men don't need a million
- 9:33dollars, like Pete, Oh, Pete, he'd just like to have money.
- 9:37But that was, Sally, your husband's study. Where is it?
- 9:41Come with me? It's upstairs. That's a NodD place for it. No,
- 9:46it's next to his bedroom, so that after Theodore has studied enough bottles,
- 9:48he doesn't have to walk upstairs. He couldn't, Sally, Sally,
- 9:54what's the matter behind the death? That was Theodore? Marsh Darling? Yes,
- 10:03you said as I said it intentionally. The knife in his back reached
- 10:07the heart's still warm. He was murdered quite recently, murdered. Men rarely
- 10:13commit suicide by stabbing themselves in the back. They find it inconvenient or something.
- 10:18And I beg your pardon, but I heard someone screaming Miss Blair,
- 10:22graves and unmannerly sound. But mister Marsh has been murdered. Good hits,
- 10:26miss I agree with you. Would you mind phoning the police Graves and asking
- 10:30them to drop in the police, Yes, Missus Marsh, and some of
- 10:33them probably won't even remove their hats. It's vulgar. But still you're being
- 10:37unkind. Suddenly I'm being angry. I think someone's been trying to make a
- 10:43fool of me and succeeding, which is very important. But the same person
- 10:46has done something a little more serious. He or she has murdered. You
- 10:50know, people get electrocuted for that. Okay, get a shot from this,
- 11:03don't finger prints are on the desk, non, sir, Come on,
- 11:09not in a all? All right? What were you doing here?
- 11:16Missus Blair asked me to visit with missus Marsh. So so I was visiting
- 11:20with missus Marsh. Why you've seen missus March. Why Sally Blair asked you
- 11:24a visit in the first place? She thought I was an art patron.
- 11:28Why Lieutenant Riley stopped pretending that you don't have degrees from at least two universities?
- 11:33A quiet, quiet, what do you want to do? Get me
- 11:35in trouble with the boys? Keep it a diddy seecret between it. Thanks,
- 11:41you're not confiding in me tonight, Not until I go home and write
- 11:43like mad in my diary. All right, go home. I'd like to
- 11:46say goodbye to Sally and neither of them. I suppose there's a profound police
- 11:52reason for that. No, I'm just being mean. Good Night Trembler,
- 11:54good night Templar. Yeah. One thing I gotta say about you. You
- 12:01got a lot of dignity. It's funny you should say that, Lieutenant.
- 12:03I was just considering sliding down that banister. Lots of cops back at that
- 12:22marble shack. So there were Louis, so they were well, they find
- 12:24out the Theodore marsh was dead by themselves. What did you tell him?
- 12:28Louis stopped being disrespectful. Okay, we eat and dine now, now we
- 12:33turn left at Mlani and Sa eighteen ninety no three twelve. Oh it's too
- 12:37bad. Eighteen ninety Malannie Road would have been at least the advertizing address.
- 12:43Who are we calling on a man named Pete Bryan? Can he cook?
- 12:46Maybe? No? But he has other talents, Louis. He looks very
- 12:50pretty in beach pictures. He does? He does? You're going up to
- 12:54his place to take some all pictures? No, I just want to find
- 12:56out exactly how he fits in the picture of murder? What is it?
- 13:11Simon Templar sounds like a clean coul American boy working his way through college.
- 13:18Oh, just remembered, you're the saint. I'm wrong, You're wrong.
- 13:20May I come in? It's a little on the late side. I've just
- 13:24seen missus Marsh lucky you will come in? Oh, thank you? Uh,
- 13:31Valerie, since you're here, No, I thought you said. I
- 13:35just said that I had seen her. She was trying to look when I
- 13:37left her, like a woman stricken by overwhelming grief. Because you were leaving
- 13:41because and I hope this comes as a shock to you, her husband was
- 13:46dead, Theodora Marsh dead. Terrible? Do I mean nice? That depends
- 13:52on what and how handy a man you are with a knife. Was the
- 13:56pride of my scoutmaster. You had a hand on the knife that killed Marsh.
- 14:01You may yet be the pride of the district attorney. You're really saying
- 14:03Marsh was murdered, he was really murdered. Fine, wait a minute.
- 14:09You're the man who has a picture of Valerie and me taken in Miami.
- 14:11Aren't you the one Marsh was going to use for divorcing Valerie? So I've
- 14:16heard I don't have it, which I regret. It's a picture that won't
- 14:18mean anything in the divorce case anymore, but might mean a lot in someone's
- 14:22trial for murder. That's right, then, nice of you to tell me
- 14:28about it. Are you offering a picture for sale? I don't have it.
- 14:31Would this make you change your mind? Oh you've run out of knives?
- 14:35Ah bray, this is safer. Well it's a very pretty gun.
- 14:39Stop admiring it. Hand over the picture. I don't have it. Would
- 14:41you prefer being shot? I never prefer being shot. As a matter of
- 14:45fact, I'm never shot. It's unethical or something. I don't think I'm
- 14:48going to mind being unethical about you. I'd mind you haven't much time left,
- 14:52neither of you. The police are coming to visit with you, with
- 14:54me. Why doesn't seem to have been a very well kept secret that you
- 14:58and missus friendly, shall I say? Mister marsh is now dead as a
- 15:03result of extreme violence. The police will undoubtedly want to know where you were
- 15:07earlier tonight. Where, by the way were you That's none of your business.
- 15:13Oh now you've wounded me to the quick. I shall leave now.
- 15:16Wait you want me to stay and tell the police about the picture. Okay,
- 15:20get out. Don't try anything with that photograph. It doesn't mean a
- 15:24thing, of course it doesn't. Good night, mister Brian. Be nice
- 15:28to the police. They don't have a million dollars like Valerie, and they're
- 15:31not pretty. They can be the death of you. Home at last.
- 15:46Yeah, it'll be a late dinner, but it will be dinner. I
- 15:52don't care what it is, just so long as it's something. You must
- 15:54be starved. I'm terribly sorry. Oh that's okay. You couldn't help it.
- 16:00Shut the door behind you doing okay. He looked his envelope on the
- 16:03floor. Somebody must have shove it on the door while we were out.
- 16:07Hey, it's a special delivery addressed to me. Well, well then it's
- 16:14a photograph. Mmmm man in Ava, didn't I nam? Huh's very nice?
- 16:22What they got on the beaches that I'm bed either, Louis, you're
- 16:23speaking of the woman. I yeah, never mind, it's very marsh.
- 16:27The man's speak. Brian, you can you might don't want? You know.
- 16:32I'm puzzled, Louis, hardly. Theodore Marsh wasn't lying when he told
- 16:36his wife he tent the picture to me. That's nice. So maybe where
- 16:38he is now the temperature is mild instead of hot. Louis, I'm worried.
- 16:42What about mister Marsh's future, about his past, and about excuse me
- 16:48a moment. No, that's all right. I got some serious studying to
- 16:51do. Hey, here's a horse in the fifth I know it's gonna win
- 16:56Adia now because my feet hurt big cause your horse's name is blue Jay.
- 17:02Oh well, put a plaster on him for me. Huh, hello,
- 17:06Lieutenant Raley, Please timon temper, I'll hold on. Wanted to come down
- 17:08and arrest the picture. Lieutenant you visited Pete Bryan. You holding him?
- 17:15I meant in jail you're not. You'd have liked to, but you're not.
- 17:21Should you have? I don't know? Good night. His place is
- 17:26over on the other side of town. Took us nearly an hour to get
- 17:30here from it, it's gonna take us nearly an hour to get back there.
- 17:33Oh, don't tell me we're going for another ride. Yes we are,
- 17:37huh. We dine later, and we dine later bos and the guy
- 17:52is asleep. Then we're waken already. May have run away from home.
- 17:57Door is locked, however, it's a it's a cheap blck. I mean
- 18:02flat key should open it, perhaps this one. Yes, it's it's it's
- 18:10it's gonna docum light switch around someplace. That's about it. It is.
- 18:18Brian didn't run away from home, nor could I have waked him. However,
- 18:22loud I rang, Oh, his head don't look so good. Well,
- 18:26the gunny shot himself. What's stole in his hands? And I think
- 18:30we'll leave it there he uh, he's not as pretty as his picture.
- 18:53Yes, sir, Hello Graves, mister Templar, mister Temple, this will
- 18:57go better inside. Of course, everyone has retired for the lights, naturally.
- 19:07Some of them, however, can still be waked. I beg your
- 19:08pardon the music room, I think, yes, sir, here we are,
- 19:17sir, good Graves, I'll need your help. I want you to
- 19:21go to miss Blair's room. Wake her if she needs waking, Tell her
- 19:23I'm down here with the photograph. The photograph the one of Missus Marshall.
- 19:29She'll know, Tell her that and leave her. Wait five minutes. Then
- 19:32go through the same routine with Missus marsh But you don't have to understand what
- 19:36you do as I say. Yes, sir, oh uh, before you
- 19:40go, turn off all the lights in this room. Where do you accept
- 19:41that small one on the table? Very well, sir, But why I'm
- 19:45setting a scene and it'll play better in the dark. Just told me.
- 20:03Good for grades the picture I have it. But before you start anything anything,
- 20:07yes, like waving guns at me, I'd like a question or two
- 20:10answered. Marsh was a rich man, like most rich men, I assume
- 20:14he made a will. Yes, the provisions of which are hesitation doesn't become
- 20:19you. Obviously he would have left the bulk of his estate to his wife.
- 20:23Yes, Yes, there would have been the usual bequest's servants and what
- 20:27else? You've been in touch with Theodore's lawyer. No, I'm guessing,
- 20:32but I am right so far. Yes, what else was in the will?
- 20:37He left me some money, a lot of money, A lot of
- 20:40money, thank you? But that doesn't mean it, mister Templar, this
- 20:44is hardly the time too, Oh, Sally, Valerie, I'm afraid of
- 20:49Simon. Hello, miss you don't have to be afraid of Simon, Sally.
- 20:52He's a gentleman and flattery won't help, not anymore, missus marsh Why
- 20:57did you tell me your husband and said he'd sent that picture to me?
- 21:02Because that's what he now? What conceivable reason would he have for telling you
- 21:06about it? Well, I really don't know. Would he have wanted to
- 21:08make it possible for you to steal it from me, to make it possible
- 21:11for your sister to threaten me with a gun and an effort to get it
- 21:14away from me? I don't know what to say. You might try the
- 21:18truth. How did you know your husband had sent the picture to me?
- 21:22I? All right, I'm not very proud of myself, but I've been
- 21:29using graves to spy on my husband. I said, I wasn't proud of
- 21:33myself, but I had to protect myself. I didn't want to be divorced.
- 21:37Then you discovered the existence of the picture and it's whereabouts, not from
- 21:41your husband but through graves. You say discovered its existence, as though perhaps
- 21:45it didn't exist. Oh it does exist, all right, I have it
- 21:49with me. Oh yeah, here, thank you. Hm. It's a
- 21:56nice picture, very good likeness. Mm. There'd be no doubt about identification.
- 22:03There would have been no difficulty about corroboration either, once Pete Bryan was
- 22:07put on the witness stand, Simon, you said, would have been no
- 22:11difficulty. I did. Brian, unfortunately, is no longer in a position
- 22:15to testify to anything. Well he's not, not, he is. I
- 22:21left him half an hour ago, lying on the floor of his bedroom,
- 22:23a revolver in his right hand, a bullet woman in his right temple.
- 22:26He killed himself, so it would appear. But why unless, of course,
- 22:30he killed Theodore and was then seized with panic or remorse and put an
- 22:36end to his own life. It's a pretty theory. Theory, theory,
- 22:40pretty but like so many pretty things, faults. He was murdered. But
- 22:45from what you just told us, Lewie and I entered his room. I
- 22:48had to put the lights on. Well, according to police records, no
- 22:52man shoots himself in the dark. Oh, this is all a little too
- 22:57much for me. I'm going upstairs. I think you'd better leave the photograph
- 23:02here though, No I'm keeping it. It belongs to me, it belongs
- 23:06to the police. I said I was keeping it. Valerie, put that
- 23:10gun away. It's pearl handled, no doubt, had gun of the highest
- 23:12pedigree. I don't care what you say or think. I'm Missus Marshall.
- 23:17You'd better let be a heavy gun. I'm sorry, madame. Never mind,
- 23:22And the photograph here you are, mister Templar hasn't been damaged. I
- 23:29rather thought you'd be outside the door, Graves. Thank you, sir.
- 23:33You might as well let me have Missus Marsh's gun to exhibit A and exhibit
- 23:37B. The police will be pleased here it is. Yes, yes,
- 23:41it's rather a heavy gun for a woman. I wonder if it's heavy enough
- 23:45to I'm afraid I may have slightly damaged your butler, Missus marsh Yes,
- 23:53so I see, but I feel terribly about it. If you knocked him
- 23:56out, he probably deserved it, thank you, Sally. But I don't
- 24:00feel terribly about knocking him up. What I feel terrible about is the butler
- 24:06turned out to be guilty. Simon. Yes, Missus march I am.
- 24:21I'm not sure why I'm still up or why you're still here. The answer
- 24:26to that is simple. Yes, I haven't explained how I knew Graves was
- 24:30the murderer. Oh how did you know? Well, there was the photograph.
- 24:34You lied about it when you said your husband had sent it to me,
- 24:37But I knew you had to be lying because if your husband intended to
- 24:41use it as evidence in a divorce case, he would have sent it to
- 24:44his lawyers, not me. That's true. Therefore, I wondered, had
- 24:48you sent me the photograph yourself, not if you were planning to commit murder,
- 24:51because that photograph would have been strong evidence against you, and it might
- 24:56have been selling. Well if it were, why would she have come to
- 24:57my house and tried to get it back from him? No, it was
- 25:00neither your husband, Sally nor yourself had sent the picture to me, and
- 25:04Peter O'Brian's death cleared him, which left Graves who wanted the bequest my husband
- 25:08had left him. Yes, Graves who sent the photographed to me in order
- 25:11to provide motive for murder against you, and who then proceeded to murder your
- 25:18husband. Who Riven knew about the picture. Graves took it from my desk.
- 25:22But Simon, why did he kill Pete a double gamble. Either the
- 25:26police would accept the suicide as genuine and close the case on the basis that
- 25:30Pete had murdered your husband and then killed himself, or else I'd have been
- 25:33suspected of both killings, right, Simon, Yes, you've finished the explanation.
