- 0:13Welcome back to Just Be True, a soul -led podcast.
- 0:17This podcast was born from the deep desire to
- 0:20live authentically, to strip away the mask, the
- 0:24expectations, the old stories, and remember who
- 0:27you truly are. Each episode, we explore what
- 0:31it means to live in harmony with your soul's
- 0:33truth through real conversations, intuitive guidance,
- 0:37and powerful moments of reflection. I am Summer,
- 0:41and I am thrilled that you are here with me today.
- 0:44So today, we're going to talk about something
- 0:46that touches every single one of us, yet we rarely
- 0:49slow down enough to truly honor it. And that's
- 0:53grief. Grief when love, life, and identity change.
- 0:58So not just a grief of losing someone that we
- 1:01love But the grief of losing a version of our
- 1:04life a season an identity a dream a role we once
- 1:10held Grief isn't only about death. It's about
- 1:14change and sometimes It's about becoming someone
- 1:19new So grief after losing someone There is a
- 1:27sacredness in grieving someone that you loved.
- 1:32When someone passes, whether suddenly or after
- 1:36a long goodbye, something shifts in the architecture
- 1:39of our world. Their voice no longer fills the
- 1:43room. Their laughter isn't heard on the other
- 1:46end of the phone. The holidays feel different,
- 1:49sometimes very empty. Ordinary days can feel
- 1:54like it's missing something. And what I've come
- 1:58to understand both personally and from holding
- 2:02space for others is that grief is love with nowhere
- 2:07to land. Love that is hitting a void that can't
- 2:13truly be explained other than the feeling of
- 2:16it. So this doesn't mean that you're broken.
- 2:21What it means, it means that you love deeply.
- 2:26and honor this about you and be grateful that
- 2:30you had the ability to love and to love so deeply.
- 2:35You know, grief moves in waves. Some days are
- 2:40very manageable, but you're going to have other
- 2:44days where a song, a smell, a memory that's going
- 2:52to change you. They're gonna pull you under and
- 2:55you may feel like you're drowning But there is
- 3:00no timeline for grief There is no I should be
- 3:04over this by now. There's no why am I sad it's
- 3:08already been a year Grief does not ask to be
- 3:13fixed it has to be felt and Sometimes the most
- 3:18healing thing that you can do is to sit with
- 3:22it not analyze it, not rush it, not distract
- 3:28yourself from it, and not spiritually bypass
- 3:32it, but to sit with it. Allow the emotions to
- 3:40arise. Allow the tears to fall. Allow the tightness
- 3:46in your chest to happen. Allow the anger, the
- 3:51confusion, and the ache. This part is extremely
- 3:57important because grief is energy and emotion
- 4:01is energy in motion. So when you allow yourself
- 4:06to feel, I mean truly, truly feel, you allow
- 4:12that energy to move through you. It comes in
- 4:16waves, swells, it peaks and then it passes. And
- 4:23when we try to bury it, when we try to ignore
- 4:27it, when we try to push it aside, when we say,
- 4:31I don't have time for this, or you think that
- 4:33you need to be strong and hold yourself together,
- 4:37or you may feel that you shouldn't feel a certain
- 4:39way, you're interrupting the natural movement
- 4:43of that grief, of that emotion that needs to
- 4:48move through you. Because what happens is if
- 4:55when you interrupt that and you don't allow it
- 4:58to move through you it gets stored It settles
- 5:02in your body. It lingers in your nervous system.
- 5:07It shows up as heaviness irritability anxiety
- 5:12numbness That is when grief becomes stuck and
- 5:19when grief is suppressed long enough It doesn't
- 5:22disappear. It falls harder later. So sometimes
- 5:29through burnout, sometimes through illness or
- 5:32addictions, sometimes through emotional overwhelm
- 5:36that feels disappropriate in the moment. But
- 5:41it's not disappropriate. It'll be at that point
- 5:46you'll be trying to acclimate it. and you'll
- 5:50try to normalize it. But you have to allow yourself
- 5:55to feel. And when you allow yourself to feel,
- 6:01you are honoring the sacred intelligence of your
- 6:05body and your heart. When you let grief move,
- 6:10even if it's messy, you are telling your system
- 6:14it is safe to release. And release creates space.
- 6:22Space to breathe. Space for peace. And space
- 6:27for new life to enter. So feeling it fully is
- 6:33how you move through it. It's not meant to be
- 6:37easy. It's meant to be powerful. It's meant to
- 6:41be life changing and healing. I mean, I've certainly
- 6:47lost loved ones throughout my lifetime, and what
- 6:51surprises me the most about my grief was not
- 6:56that the pain of their absence, but the clarity
- 6:59of their impact. In the quiet, after they're
- 7:06gone, I began to see how deeply they shaped me.
- 7:11The things that they taught me, the ways that
- 7:14they loved me, the subtle ways they influence
- 7:18who I became. It was almost if that grief illuminated
- 7:24the imprint that they left behind. At first,
- 7:29the loss felt very overwhelming, heavy and consuming,
- 7:34and there were moments where I felt like I couldn't
- 7:37breathe, or that life would never be the same
- 7:40again. And life's not going to be the same again.
- 7:44because we've lost and through that loss we've
- 7:48changed and we've became something new but what
- 7:55I also notice and this took time was that once
- 7:59the sharp edges of the grief softened something
- 8:03else emerged and it was their presence not in
- 8:09a dramatic way, not in a way that replaced the
- 8:13physical absence, but in a quiet, steady way,
- 8:18a sense of connection, a warmth, a knowing. It
- 8:25was as if once the storm of emotions moved through
- 8:29me, I could feel them differently, not gone,
- 8:36but integrated. not outside of me, but woven
- 8:41within me. And that shift, that being able to
- 8:47acknowledge their presence, that only happens
- 8:51because I allow myself to feel the grief fully.
- 8:56And when the waves settle, what remained was
- 8:59the love that I still had for them. And that
- 9:03love never disappears. And in fact, That love
- 9:09that you have for them can continue to grow stronger
- 9:13even though they're on the other side. It doesn't
- 9:17end. It just transforms and it changes. So I
- 9:27empower you. If you're going, if you're grieving
- 9:30for the loss of someone, I empower you. To take
- 9:36all the time that you need to fully allow that
- 9:40grief to move through you and to let go So that
- 9:43you can experience life after and experience
- 9:49the change that it creates and the wonder and
- 9:52the power within yourself that comes alive So
- 9:59the next thing that we're going to talk about
- 10:01is grief for life transitions It's a whole other
- 10:06type of grief, but one that we can still resonate
- 10:09with. So it's the kind that doesn't come from
- 10:13the loss of a person, but from the loss of a
- 10:16chapter. This is the grief of change. Leaving
- 10:20a career that defines you, stepping away from
- 10:23a role you carry for years, outgrowing a life
- 10:27you once worked so hard to build. This kind of
- 10:32grief can feel disorienting because on the outside
- 10:36everything looks perfectly fine There may not
- 10:41be a visible tragedy in fact there may even be
- 10:46forward movement happening expansion and opportunities
- 10:49that you're taking advantage of Maybe it was
- 10:53even your choice for these changes to happen
- 10:55or they were necessary Or maybe you're even becoming
- 10:59more aligned with where you're at, where you're
- 11:02supposed to be. But yet, there's an underlying
- 11:07sadness to it all. Now, I can say this personally,
- 11:15there are moments when I miss what I once was.
- 11:18The structure, the familiarity, the identity
- 11:22that came with it. And there are days when I
- 11:25feel nostalgic. nostalgic for the version of
- 11:29my life that felt known and steady, but at the
- 11:35same time I know deeply that what is being created
- 11:40now is way more in alignment with who I'm supposed
- 11:45to be. I'm more fulfilled, I'm more expansive,
- 11:49I'm more prosperous in many ways. and that goes
- 11:55way beyond a title or a paycheck. But both can
- 12:00be true. You're not grieving the pain, you're
- 12:06grieving the familiarity. The nervous system
- 12:12attaches to what it knows. Even if what it knows
- 12:17wasn't fully aligned, or that it was very predictable,
- 12:24it had shape, it had rhythm, and it was comfort.
- 12:30So when you choose growth, or when growth chooses
- 12:35you, because many times that's how it happens
- 12:37too, right? There's often a threshold of space,
- 12:44a limited or a space of in between where the
- 12:48old is gone, but the new hasn't fully formed
- 12:51yet, right? So you're kind of in this in -between
- 12:55kind of weird space, right? But in that space,
- 13:01your heart may whisper, I know this is right,
- 13:05but I miss what was. That doesn't mean you made
- 13:10the wrong decision. It means that you're integrating.
- 13:13It means that you're getting used to what's to
- 13:17become. This is where transitions are taking
- 13:21form and transitions are very layered. You can
- 13:25feel gratitude and grief at the same time, relief
- 13:29and longing, excitement and uncertainty. You
- 13:32can feel all of those at once. But these are
- 13:35not weaknesses. This is expansion. And honoring
- 13:39the complexity is part of the moving through
- 13:43it with grace. being open to that and being honest
- 13:48with yourself as you're going through these emotions
- 13:50they're perfectly normal there's no judgment
- 13:55in them and allow those emotions to come up and
- 13:59work through them find someone to talk to and
- 14:03work through them so the third part and this
- 14:09one might be the quietest grief of them all the
- 14:14grief of the person you used to be. Not the version
- 14:19that died, not the version that carried you,
- 14:24the one who survived, the one who hustled, the
- 14:28one who stayed small in safe spaces, the one
- 14:33who held everything together and carried everyone
- 14:37else. As you step into awakening, as you heal
- 14:43and you evolve you begin to shed identities and
- 14:49even when those identities are heavy when they
- 14:54that were familiar they gave you structure they
- 14:58gave you purpose they gave you a way of understanding
- 15:01yourself and I see this often especially in moms
- 15:07you know there is a profound grief that can rise
- 15:14when our children begin to grow independently,
- 15:20when they don't need you the same way, when they
- 15:23stop reaching for your hand, when your role shifts
- 15:27from constant caregiver to quiet supporter, and
- 15:32it can feel like you're no longer needed the
- 15:36same way that you were. And you may be asked,
- 15:39well, you know, I used to do all of these things.
- 15:41Who am I now? And that question can ache. You
- 15:47know, because motherhood, especially hands -on
- 15:51motherhood, becomes intertwined with our identity.
- 15:55It becomes rhythm. It becomes a mission. And
- 15:59it becomes proof of value. So when that season
- 16:04changes, It can feel like something inside of
- 16:08you is dissolving, but what's dissolving is not
- 16:12your worth, it's your role. There can be grief
- 16:20in no longer being the fixer, the strong one,
- 16:25the rescuer, the overachiever, the constant caregiver,
- 16:29the one who never needed help because of You
- 16:34are no longer that, then what are you? When you
- 16:45step into who you're supposed to be, start owning
- 16:49your own becoming, you are asked to release identities
- 16:56that once identified you, that once defined you,
- 17:00and letting go, even when it's growth, It carries
- 17:04loss. But here's the reframe. A different way
- 17:10to look at it. You're not losing yourself. You're
- 17:15expanding beyond that single role. You're meeting
- 17:20the version of you that exists outside of being
- 17:24needed and discovering that you are worthy even
- 17:29when you are not required to be. and that kind
- 17:36of becoming can feel very destabilizing but at
- 17:42the same time it is deeply freeing because you
- 17:47are stepping into a space of learning who you
- 17:51are again you're no longer the mom who took everything
- 17:57on that drove everybody to soccer practice or
- 18:01to PTA meetings or you know to go see their friends
- 18:05you're being able to discover what keeps that
- 18:10brings excitement and joy to you that makes you
- 18:13feel alive and that is amazing so you know grief
- 18:27isn't something to rush through but something
- 18:32to walk with not something to conquer not something
- 18:37to get over but something that reshapes you quietly
- 18:42from the inside grief will slow you down it softens
- 18:51the sharp edges that we carry it strips away
- 18:55what is performative and returns you to what
- 18:57is real and when you allow it truly allow it
- 19:05grief becomes a threshold it can humble you it
- 19:12deepens your compassion it expands your capacity
- 19:16to hold complexity in yourself and in others
- 19:21it teaches you that strength is not suppressive
- 19:32that love does not disappear that identity can
- 19:38evolve without you losing your essence grief
- 19:42reminds you that life is fragile and sacred and
- 19:48in many ways grief is proof that you lived that
- 19:53you loved that you risked attachment that you
- 19:58allowed yourself to care deeply and that you
- 20:02dare to change even when change costs you something
- 20:07grief is not the opposite of growth often is
- 20:12the doorway to it now if you are grieving right
- 20:22now whether it's over a person, a season, a role
- 20:28or a former version of yourself I want to offer
- 20:32you this you are not behind you are not failing
- 20:38and most importantly you are not weak you are
- 20:44in transition and transition even when it feels
- 20:49disoriented is very sacred you are in the space
- 20:54between what was what is becoming. That space
- 21:01can feel tender, it can feel uncertain, and it
- 21:05can feel like standing in an unfamiliar light.
- 21:09But nothing about this means that you're doing
- 21:12it wrong. So let yourself cry when the waves
- 21:18come up, when those emotions come up. Let yourself
- 21:22rest when your body needs stillness. Let yourself
- 21:28remember without rushing to move on and let yourself
- 21:34evolve without apology Grief and growth often
- 21:41walk hand -in -hand The very thing that aches
- 21:47is also the place where something new is forming
- 21:50And you don't have to force the becoming You
- 21:56only have to allow it. So if you are moving through
- 22:04grief right now, I want to offer just a few gentle
- 22:07supports. Not to fix, but to help you walk with
- 22:12it. So first thing I would say is journal. Giving
- 22:18the grief a voice. So sometimes grief just wants
- 22:22to be witnessed. So try writing about it without
- 22:27censoring Write a letter to the person that you
- 22:31lost write to the version of yourself that you
- 22:35released Write about what you miss the most write
- 22:40about what you're afraid of Write about what
- 22:45is happening? What is your beginning starting
- 22:47to look like? You don't have to be poetic you
- 22:52just have to be honest and when emotions move
- 22:57from the inside of your body onto paper it creates
- 23:01space and it's allowing that emotion to be in
- 23:09motion so there are some prompts that you can
- 23:13use to help with this like what did this person
- 23:17teach me or what did What part of me feels most
- 23:25tender right now? What am I afraid I will never
- 23:31be the same? And then what is quietly trying
- 23:38to emerge? These are great prompts. The second
- 23:46thing I would like to do is tell you to share
- 23:48your story. Grief softens in safe spaces So isolation
- 23:54intensifies the grief whether so I'm gonna say
- 23:58whether it's a trusted friend a therapist a spiritual
- 24:02mentor a support group Speaking your story out
- 24:06loud allows your nervous system to feel witnessed
- 24:10And there is something profoundly healing about
- 24:17someone saying That makes sense. Or it's okay
- 24:22for you to feel that way. You don't have to carry
- 24:25this along. So please find someone or a group
- 24:33that you can share with. The third thing I would
- 24:40say is allow ritual. So you can light a candle.
- 24:46Visit a meaningful place. Create a small personal
- 24:51ceremony to honor what was. Rituals give the
- 24:56heart a container for transition. So create your
- 25:01own ritual that works best for you and your memories.
- 25:08The fourth thing I would say is tend to your
- 25:11body. Grief is not just emotional. is psychological.
- 25:18So walk, breathe deeply, practice yoga or tai
- 25:22chi, something that brings in movement. And there
- 25:29can be times like when you're having a really
- 25:31hard time, just place your hand on your chest.
- 25:36When the waves come up and let your body move
- 25:39that energy, Rather than bracing against it whether
- 25:44than trying to shove it down or forget about
- 25:47it Be gentle with yourself offer yourself gratitude
- 25:52offer yourself graciousness and patience And
- 25:59laughs And the last thing that I would like to
- 26:08offer in this is give yourself permission to
- 26:11feel joy again. And this one surprises a lot
- 26:15of people. But sometimes we unconsciously hold
- 26:21onto grief because joy can feel disloyal. Smiling
- 26:26feels wrong. Laughter feels like betrayal. But
- 26:31moving forward can feel like leaving something
- 26:33or someone behind. But allowing yourself moments
- 26:38of light does not diminish your love. In fact,
- 26:42it actually honors it. And if you pause for a
- 26:47moment, and if you think about the person or
- 26:50the season that you're grieving, will they truly
- 26:53want you to stay small, stay dim, and live half
- 26:58-heartedly? Of course not. They're going to want
- 27:03you to get out there and enjoy life. and thrive
- 27:07and find laughter and hope and joy again in your
- 27:10day. The love you shared was never meant to cage
- 27:16you in sorrow. The lessons, the memories, the
- 27:21imprint that left in your life, all of those
- 27:25are meant to expand you, not shrink you. So choosing
- 27:29joy again is not forgetting. is carrying their
- 27:35impact forward. It's living in the way that reflects
- 27:40what they gave you. And it is allowing love to
- 27:44evolve from memory into embodiment. You are allowed
- 27:51to heal. You are allowed to continue living.
- 27:57And you are allowed to expand even after loss.
- 28:03And in many ways, this is how you honor what
- 28:08has been lost. Staying buried in grief does not
- 28:12prove your love. Living fully, following your
- 28:18dreams, and remembering with an open heart, that
- 28:27is what honors that love. is what honors that
- 28:34loss. So as always, thank you for being here.
- 28:47Thank you for being willing to feel deeply. Thank
- 28:51you for allowing yourself to sit with this. And
- 28:55thank you for choosing this whole lead path.
- 29:01God asks you to grow through change. Embrace
- 29:06it and move forward with it. So, if this episode
