- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Welcome in the legend, Eric Weddle.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Ring of Honor inductee earlier this year at the University
- 0:30Speaker 2: of Utah.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Friend of the program. E-Dub, welcome back. How are you, sir?
- 0:37Speaker 4: What's up, what's up? Doing great. Can't wait for the
- 0:40Speaker 4: game on Saturday. Wide out. Helmets are fire. Got our
- 0:47Speaker 4: game tomorrow. Get a dub and then enjoy the weekend.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Have you wished Utah head football coach Morgan Scali a
- 0:55Speaker 2: happy birthday yet today?
- 0:58Speaker 4: I shot him a text and told him he hadn't
- 1:01Speaker 4: even hit his prime yet. He's like 50th inch and
- 1:04Speaker 4: closer and closer. I'm not sure I want to get there.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I don't worry about it, bud. Don't worry about it.
- 1:10Speaker 2: He's still in great shape. 47 for Morgan, if I'm
- 1:13Speaker 2: not mistaken.
- 1:14Speaker 3: So, yeah. thriving.
- 1:17Speaker 4: If we all can look that, if we all look,
- 1:18Speaker 4: can look that good at 47, I think we're doing
- 1:21Speaker 4: all right.
- 1:22Speaker 2: If at 47 years old, you're making millions of dollars.
- 1:25Speaker 2: You look as good as he does. You got a happy,
- 1:27Speaker 2: healthy family and your football team is four and oh,
- 1:30Speaker 2: you don't have a lot of things to complain about.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Definitely not. Definitely not. So I should see him very
- 1:36Speaker 4: happy and smiling when he comes across the presser today.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Did you, uh, did he come visit last weekend on
- 1:45Speaker 2: the recruiting, on the recruiting trip?
- 1:47Speaker 4: He did. He did. Uh, it was quite the, uh,
- 1:52Speaker 4: surprise and really cool. Uh, we don't, you know, Gage
- 1:58Speaker 4: and I, uh, especially Gage, right? Like having, having a
- 2:03Speaker 4: head coach of a program, come watch you on a
- 2:08Speaker 4: bi-week when he'd be anyone in the country, uh, was
- 2:11Speaker 4: really cool and just, and it was a great game
- 2:16Speaker 4: to see him, to visit with him, and obviously, not obviously,
- 2:20Speaker 4: but Gage did everything in his power to help us
- 2:24Speaker 4: win and put on a pretty good performance. So it
- 2:28Speaker 4: was really cool, really cool for Morgan and humbled by
- 2:32Speaker 4: it and, you know, kind of shows where Gage is
- 2:35Speaker 4: at priority-wise and how they feel about himself.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Big win for you against Del Norte.
- 2:44Speaker 4: 33-21.
- 2:44Speaker 2: The aforementioned son of Eric Weddle Gage had 137 yards
- 2:48Speaker 2: and two touchdowns passing. 168 yards and a tutty on
- 2:53Speaker 2: the ground as well.
- 2:54Speaker 3: What did he do on defense? Jeez, what a lame game.
- 2:58Speaker 4: Yeah, he had 10 tackles, a sack, forced fumble, and... Again,
- 3:06Speaker 4: you know, we've played six games this season, and he
- 3:09Speaker 4: has yet to allow a catch in his coverage. Doesn't
- 3:13Speaker 4: get much action in the passing game, so he just
- 3:16Speaker 4: kind of runs around and just tries to knock people
- 3:18Speaker 4: out and keep everything in front of him. So he
- 3:22Speaker 4: did his thing, 110 snaps played, which is just insane. Like,
- 3:26Speaker 4: I don't know how he does it, but luckily he
- 3:29Speaker 4: does for us as a team and all the other teams.
- 3:32Speaker 4: All the other guys we have on the team, the Warriors,
- 3:35Speaker 4: we had guys playing through injuries and guys that hadn't
- 3:38Speaker 4: played all year that had been called upon. So credit
- 3:41Speaker 4: to the coaches, players, the team. We scored 20 in
- 3:43Speaker 4: the fourth to come from behind and take that victory.
- 3:47Speaker 4: So moving forward, moving on, moving forward.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Congrats on that. I mean, that's awesome to see.
- 3:54Speaker 2: It's the time of year in football and even more
- 3:56Speaker 2: so in high school football because you're a little bit
- 3:58Speaker 2: ahead of the schedule today. for college and certainly the NFL,
- 4:01Speaker 2: but it's the time of year where like teams are
- 4:03Speaker 2: starting to deal with injuries and things are starting to
- 4:05Speaker 2: pile up. And even some star players around the country
- 4:08Speaker 2: are starting to go down. And I know you've seen
- 4:10Speaker 2: the reports out of Provo, LJ Martin, their star running
- 4:13Speaker 2: back offensive player of the year in the big 12 conference.
- 4:16Speaker 2: He's going to be out for the next four to
- 4:18Speaker 2: six weeks, four weeks keeps them out of the Notre
- 4:20Speaker 2: Dame game. Six weeks keeps them out of the Utah game.
- 4:24Speaker 2: So we'll see exactly what happens there. But it inspired
- 4:27Speaker 2: for me a larger conversation, Eric, about... much the star
- 4:32Speaker 2: players on a football team actually mean in terms of
- 4:35Speaker 2: like wins above replacement. Like if you take games, you
- 4:39Speaker 2: went a lot off of your high school football team,
- 4:42Speaker 2: your win loss record looks a lot different. If you
- 4:44Speaker 2: take Eric Weddle off of those old youth teams, the
- 4:46Speaker 2: win loss record looks very different. I think if you
- 4:49Speaker 2: take LJ Martin off this BYU team for six weeks,
- 4:52Speaker 2: their win loss record looks different.
- 4:54Speaker 3: You obviously played it at the highest level.
- 4:56Speaker 2: And there's depth in certain positions and some teams do
- 4:59Speaker 2: better with that than others. And Utah looks like they're
- 5:02Speaker 2: a pretty deep team this year, but there's some guys
- 5:05Speaker 2: like I'm, I'm looking at way Sean Parker and I'm saying, man,
- 5:07Speaker 2: how many wins is that guy worth by himself? So
- 5:10Speaker 2: when I take like just the stars that you played with,
- 5:13Speaker 2: or you played against just the elite, elite, elite at
- 5:16Speaker 2: whatever level, how much is an individual running back safety,
- 5:21Speaker 2: anything but a quarterback? How much is that guy worth
- 5:24Speaker 2: in terms of the win loss column?
- 5:28Speaker 4: Oh, man, what a great question. Man, I think it
- 5:34Speaker 4: comes down to obviously the position and then the depth
- 5:38Speaker 4: at the position and then what are they being asked
- 5:42Speaker 4: within the scheme and the side of the ball that
- 5:45Speaker 4: it may be. I think the higher level you go,
- 5:50Speaker 4: the less impact it has. in overall wins and losses,
- 5:57Speaker 4: in my opinion, because, you know, the coaching, the players
- 6:01Speaker 4: are much more at an equal rate or the drop-up
- 6:05Speaker 4: isn't as big. And shoot, I mean, that running back
- 6:09Speaker 4: that got in there last week, what a cool story
- 6:12Speaker 4: for BYU. I don't remember his name, but I think
- 6:15Speaker 4: he's a walk-on and did his thing in the second
- 6:19Speaker 4: half or whatever it was and ran the ball well. So,
- 6:22Speaker 4: I just think it's going to be a hit. Hopefully
- 6:24Speaker 4: it doesn't have that big of an impact, but I
- 6:28Speaker 4: think it'll, it'll show itself against the better teams because
- 6:31Speaker 4: you're taking away, uh, like Martin's a superstar and he's
- 6:37Speaker 4: not just a good back. He's a star. So it
- 6:39Speaker 4: will have an impact, but I don't know, like the
- 6:42Speaker 4: wins and losses, I would say maybe one, like, give
- 6:46Speaker 4: or take like one, it would be one, one win
- 6:49Speaker 4: or loss that he's not there. Yeah. In my opinion. Okay.
- 6:55Speaker 4: But maybe not, maybe not have that big of impact
- 6:58Speaker 4: overall because I've been like, we didn't have LT. I'm
- 7:02Speaker 4: just thinking about the times that star players like LeBain
- 7:05Speaker 4: and Thompson, we didn't have him in the second round
- 7:08Speaker 4: of playoffs at Indianapolis, but we still won because we
- 7:10Speaker 4: had Michael Turner behind him and Daryl Sproles, which, are
- 7:14Speaker 4: really good players. Yeah, they're not star like a Canadian,
- 7:16Speaker 4: but they're, and we manufactured it and made it work,
- 7:19Speaker 4: and there's other examples, but it'll be interesting to see
- 7:24Speaker 4: the games that BYU over the next four or six weeks,
- 7:26Speaker 4: hopefully he's back because we want him back, but if
- 7:30Speaker 4: he's not, if it will have an impact over those
- 7:32Speaker 4: games getting missed.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I mean, the Notre Dame game, it's Iowa State on
- 7:36Speaker 2: Friday night, and then it's Notre Dame next weekend, and
- 7:38Speaker 2: that one was already circled for everyone for very obvious reasons,
- 7:42Speaker 2: and I think that know, with LJ Martin fully healthy,
- 7:45Speaker 2: you feel decently confident hosting a really good Notre Dame
- 7:49Speaker 2: team without your best overall player on the whole dang team.
- 7:53Speaker 2: That even from a mental standpoint, that's, that's a hard
- 7:56Speaker 2: thing to overcome.
- 7:57Speaker 4: Speaker 3 1 0 100%. 100%. And hopefully I still
- 8:03Speaker 4: think they can, I think BYU is going to beat
- 8:06Speaker 4: them personally. I don't think Norden's all that. And I
- 8:09Speaker 4: think it's a perfect game, defensive game. situational football. And
- 8:13Speaker 4: then it comes back to the head coach and culture
- 8:15Speaker 4: and belief and inspiring and connection and all those things
- 8:19Speaker 4: that Kalani does so well. that, you know, maybe they
- 8:23Speaker 4: could be in, which I expect an inspired group that
- 8:27Speaker 4: maybe a running back type by committees and bear runs
- 8:29Speaker 4: the ball more. It doesn't matter whatever it takes for a,
- 8:32Speaker 4: for a game against Notre Dame. So we'll see what happens.
- 8:35Speaker 4: All right.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Now let's talk about this Utah football team coming off
- 8:39Speaker 2: of bi-week where there's been so many years where like, Oh,
- 8:42Speaker 2: what a great time to have a bi-week so-and-so's banged
- 8:45Speaker 2: up and injured and whatnot. And knock on wood, thankfully
- 8:48Speaker 2: this Utah team has been relatively injury-free, very serious injury-free,
- 8:55Speaker 2: and that's your guy Steve Saunders having an impact, certainly.
- 8:58Speaker 2: But when you've got your full roster and you're in
- 9:02Speaker 2: a bye week and you can just kind of clean
- 9:03Speaker 2: some things up, what do you expect now on Saturday
- 9:07Speaker 2: night against Kansas? You're already better than them. You've already
- 9:10Speaker 2: played some pretty clean football. What should this team look
- 9:13Speaker 2: like off.
- 9:13Speaker 3: A bye week?
- 9:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I think... First off, let's always give a shout-out
- 9:19Speaker 4: to Steve. You know, there's a reason why. I think the.
- 9:23Speaker 5: Way Morgan handled the spring, the summer, and camp had
- 9:30Speaker 5: an impact on how our guys are feeling and how
- 9:32Speaker 5: they are trained for football.
- 9:34Speaker 4: And honestly, the truth is in the pudding. And I've
- 9:41Speaker 4: said it all along, the training is top-notch. So got
- 9:45Speaker 4: to give a shout-out to Steve like you already did.
- 9:48Speaker 4: On top of that, I think when you're able to
- 9:51Speaker 4: focus on ourselves and have the guys out there to
- 9:54Speaker 4: do so, right? We talked about the techniques and fundamentals
- 9:58Speaker 4: and getting back to the basics and really. hammering situational
- 10:01Speaker 4: football like that just it just accelerates the process of
- 10:05Speaker 4: a team getting ahead of everybody else because you're not
- 10:08Speaker 4: having to hold back practice plans you're not having to
- 10:12Speaker 4: hold back guys from practice because they're injured or they're
- 10:15Speaker 4: banged up and you're not getting those physical reps so
- 10:19Speaker 4: I think it's huge. I think we're going to get... Kansas,
- 10:22Speaker 4: their defense, I think, will give us some... It's a
- 10:28Speaker 4: good matchup for us to see how we handle a
- 10:31Speaker 4: good defense, a good run defense. I think what they're
- 10:34Speaker 4: strong at is what we like to do offensively. I'm
- 10:37Speaker 4: excited to see what wrinkles we added, what different variations offensively.
- 10:44Speaker 4: How are we going to... If we do stumble... What
- 10:47Speaker 4: is the counter? How are we going to adapt? So
- 10:50Speaker 4: I'm excited to see that. And really just to continue
- 10:53Speaker 4: our style of football and really clean, penalty-free, exciting, physical,
- 11:00Speaker 4: smash-mouth football that we're known for, but also innovative and
- 11:05Speaker 4: explosive and continue to progress to being a championship team.
- 11:11Speaker 2: What do you think of the whiteout uniforms, the icy helmets?
- 11:15Speaker 2: I know that, you know, a fashion show is not
- 11:17Speaker 2: your favorite thing, but it's a big deal for the fans.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, I'm, I'm actually surprised that we're doing
- 11:27Speaker 4: it for a home game because it's, you know, it's white.
- 11:30Speaker 4: So we usually don't, I don't know if we've ever
- 11:32Speaker 4: wore white unis at home or you, you'd be able
- 11:35Speaker 4: to answer that for me, but I think it's cool. Like,
- 11:38Speaker 4: The guys like it. The players love it. Switching it up.
- 11:41Speaker 4: I leave it up for our leadership committee to figure
- 11:45Speaker 4: out what we're wearing every week and the accessories because
- 11:50Speaker 4: it's what the players want. If they're excited and they're
- 11:53Speaker 4: juiced up, geeked up to go wear these white unis
- 11:57Speaker 4: and the helmet, it's awesome.
- 11:59Speaker 5: If you're.
- 12:01Speaker 4: I don't know. It's hard for me to have a
- 12:02Speaker 4: negative thing to say about it. So I'm excited to
- 12:06Speaker 4: see it. I'm excited to see the stadium on TV.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I don't have nothing going on Friday night or Saturday night,
- 12:11Speaker 4: so I'm going to be sitting in my theater watching
- 12:14Speaker 4: the game, primed maybe with a root beer zero, and
- 12:20Speaker 4: watch us smash the Jets.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Is that the dad beverage of choice now for the
- 12:26Speaker 2: Utah football legend, root beer zero?
- 12:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, if I have any energy drink left from
- 12:33Speaker 4: the day, I'm allotted one energy drink usually a day.
- 12:38Speaker 4: And in most cases, that carries over to the next day.
- 12:41Speaker 4: I usually sip on it throughout the day, and then
- 12:46Speaker 4: I usually have it the next day because I don't
- 12:48Speaker 4: really drink a full one because it's a lot. But, yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 4: I mean, anything like, you know, cherry Coke, zero. I
- 12:55Speaker 4: like to, you know, if I could get a soda
- 12:57Speaker 4: a day, that's, That's, you know, I think that's okay.
- 13:01Speaker 4: It's not too over the top. And then, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 4: watch us do work. Pretty simple life for me.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I'm not judging. I'm not judging. I'm a chocolate milk guy.
- 13:12Speaker 2: That's my, like, that's my beverage of choice. Just a
- 13:17Speaker 2: gourmet chocolate milk.
- 13:19Speaker 4: There you go. Do you add extra chocolate, or do
- 13:22Speaker 4: you just buy it already made?
- 13:23Speaker 3: No, look.
- 13:23Speaker 4: What's the go-to for you?
- 13:24Speaker 1: No, I.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Putting chocolate syrup into regular milk, that's what we did
- 13:30Speaker 2: when we were kids before we had our own money.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Now I'm willing to spend some premium. I'll go to
- 13:40Speaker 2: Whole Foods even to get my chocolate milk. That's the
- 13:42Speaker 2: gourmet thing I'll.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Put in the fridge.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Wow, that's on another level, man. I don't know. Can
- 13:48Speaker 4: we still hang out?
- 13:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Look, next time I come over, all right, we'll sit
- 13:54Speaker 2: by the pool. We'll sip some chocolate milk. It's a
- 13:56Speaker 2: weird combination, but it's good stuff, all right?
- 13:59Speaker 4: Hey, I'm totally down. I'm totally down.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Have you talked to anyone in Michigan, Eric Weddle?
- 14:10Speaker 4: You know, I texted Coach Witt, I think the night before,
- 14:15Speaker 4: two days before, the weekend when I was going to
- 14:18Speaker 4: the Ring Honor, and I just told him, how much
- 14:21Speaker 4: I loved him, appreciated him, and this never would have
- 14:23Speaker 4: happened without him. And he shot me a quick text back,
- 14:26Speaker 4: as Coach Whit Fashion would do. And just saying, you know, whatever,
- 14:33Speaker 4: I can't remember, you're welcome, whatever. And so, honestly, and
- 14:39Speaker 4: we've talked about this, I have not spoken to one
- 14:41Speaker 4: coach or anyone from Michigan since that whole fiasco of
- 14:47Speaker 4: my comments about Underwood and the lack of QB play,
- 14:51Speaker 4: which we're all seeing. And so it's really interesting and
- 14:56Speaker 4: unfortunate because actually the only coach that I've had talk
- 15:00Speaker 4: to is Coach Powell, and he's texted me randomly. And
- 15:04Speaker 4: we've stayed in touch because of the ring honor and
- 15:06Speaker 4: just the college football fame. And, you know, it's not–
- 15:12Speaker 4: it's bigger, I think, with him and some other guys,
- 15:15Speaker 4: so I appreciate that. But the other guys, unfortunately– I
- 15:18Speaker 4: haven't talked to, and it's all good, I get it,
- 15:21Speaker 4: but it's really unfortunate that you're going to lose out.
- 15:26Speaker 4: I don't think Michigan really, in the grand scheme of things,
- 15:29Speaker 4: had a chance with Gage. He really liked it when
- 15:32Speaker 4: he went out there, but from what I did or
- 15:35Speaker 4: said to have an impact on myself when there's a
- 15:37Speaker 4: lot of other bigger issues with other kids and their parents,
- 15:43Speaker 4: that that's the stance you take is unfortunate. But hey... again, I,
- 15:49Speaker 4: I don't lose sleep over Michigan. I really could care
- 15:51Speaker 4: less if they win or lose. And, um, you know, I'm,
- 15:56Speaker 4: I'm used to doing through, like I've been my whole
- 15:58Speaker 4: life and always will be, but, uh, really, really, it's,
- 16:02Speaker 4: it's unfortunate on that sense, uh, because I think my
- 16:07Speaker 4: relationship with those guys are bigger than anything else. And
- 16:11Speaker 4: if they had an issue or problem, they should have
- 16:12Speaker 4: just called or texted me, but they never did. So
- 16:15Speaker 4: in my mind, it's not an issue. And, uh, I'm
- 16:18Speaker 4: moving forward.
- 16:18Speaker 2: It's honestly, I didn't know that there was like a
- 16:22Speaker 2: silent treatment thing going on. That's crazy to me, but
- 16:25Speaker 2: I don't want to get further into it because I'm
- 16:26Speaker 2: sure it'll resolve itself at some point. You are a
- 16:29Speaker 2: football coach now, and we all see what's going on there.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And we're all, whether it's a love or a hate
- 16:35Speaker 2: reason that you're watching Michigan football, there's at least a
- 16:37Speaker 2: curiosity with this Utah fan base about what's going to
- 16:40Speaker 2: happen there. If you're a coach, don't you have to
- 16:43Speaker 2: make a change at the quarterback position based on what
- 16:45Speaker 2: we've seen?
- 16:48Speaker 4: Well, I mean, there's so much more involved with that situation, right?
- 16:53Speaker 4: Like how much– we're not in those meetings. We're not
- 16:57Speaker 4: in the game plan. We don't know exactly what is
- 17:00Speaker 4: being taught for the most part. We can guess. And
- 17:05Speaker 4: in my opinion, in my mind, like I can kind
- 17:07Speaker 4: of tell what is being asked or where I should
- 17:10Speaker 4: be and this and that. But you can't– if you
- 17:17Speaker 4: have an opinion, then you'll get killed for it. So
- 17:19Speaker 4: it's just, you kind of just go with the flow
- 17:21Speaker 4: in that instance. But I don't know, like the money
- 17:25Speaker 4: involved could put a roadblock on making a change right now.
- 17:30Speaker 4: If I, if I were them to jolt this team
- 17:34Speaker 4: and the offense, you need to make a change. And
- 17:37Speaker 4: I know you're not going to relieve play calling duty
- 17:40Speaker 4: from coach back. He's, historically been a really good play caller.
- 17:44Speaker 4: And at times, like, yeah, like, you're figuring it out.
- 17:46Speaker 4: So are they still going to figure it out the
- 17:48Speaker 4: next seven games with the quarterback and the situation that
- 17:51Speaker 4: you've already seen through spring, summer, training camp, and five
- 17:55Speaker 4: games in? Or do you make a change? And whatever
- 17:58Speaker 4: that is, whether it's quarterback change, whether it's play calling change,
- 18:02Speaker 4: you need to make a change for the team and
- 18:03Speaker 4: the team dynamics because it sounds like there is definitely
- 18:07Speaker 4: some friction and or the team is breaking up. And
- 18:13Speaker 4: as a head coach, you have to always make decisions
- 18:16Speaker 4: on what's best for the program and what's best for
- 18:18Speaker 4: the team and keeping the team together and competing and
- 18:21Speaker 4: fighting every single Friday or Saturday night. So I believe
- 18:25Speaker 4: that as a head coach, a change needs to happen. Now,
- 18:28Speaker 4: is it warranted for the quarterback? There's a lot of
- 18:30Speaker 4: other issues with that team and offensively from what I've
- 18:34Speaker 4: read and seen from the limited time I've watched them.
- 18:37Speaker 4: So that's ultimately what Coach Witt and They got to
- 18:41Speaker 4: figure that out. But at the end of the day,
- 18:43Speaker 4: they're just not very good. And we'll see if they
- 18:47Speaker 4: can rebound. I'd expect them to rebound with Coach Witt
- 18:52Speaker 4: and just the lead leadership of that. But he's only
- 18:55Speaker 4: been there six months. He's trying to turn around a
- 18:58Speaker 4: culture that we built and he built and had a
- 19:03Speaker 4: standing for 20-plus years at Utah. People don't understand to
- 19:06Speaker 4: build a culture and to– to instill those characteristics, it
- 19:11Speaker 4: takes time. And now you're struggling, having some adversity. Who's
- 19:15Speaker 4: going to be the expense of the head coach and
- 19:18Speaker 4: to have his back, right? Like, I don't know. I
- 19:20Speaker 4: don't know. It'll be interesting to see. So I think
- 19:24Speaker 4: changes need to happen. Long story short, any changes need
- 19:26Speaker 4: to happen. What those changes are, we're going to eventually
- 19:29Speaker 4: find out.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Eric Weddle for another minute or two. You want to
- 19:33Speaker 2: talk about how the San Francisco 49ers are 4-0 right now?
- 19:38Speaker 4: Hey, Hey, let's tip our hat to the Niners every
- 19:40Speaker 4: week or every other day. I see another guy going
- 19:44Speaker 4: down though. So is that ultimately going to be the
- 19:46Speaker 4: story of the Niners?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Don't do that. Don't bring that up. Let me just
- 19:50Speaker 3: enjoy this for now.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Niners, hold on. Do I need to call Lynch to
- 19:56Speaker 4: save the season and move forward to maybe make this
- 20:00Speaker 4: more than just a second round exit? Do you need
- 20:03Speaker 4: to come get my boy Steve to change the way
- 20:08Speaker 4: you guys are working out so you guys are healthy
- 20:10Speaker 4: like the Utes did. So I don't know. Is that
- 20:13Speaker 4: something I need to do for your Niners, or do
- 20:15Speaker 4: we need to keep Steve worried that? You tell me.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I was hoping you were going to say, do I
- 20:19Speaker 2: need to call John Lynch and say I'll come out
- 20:21Speaker 2: of retirement again? You know how many Eric Weddle 49ers
- 20:28Speaker 2: jerseys I would buy if you ever signed?
- 20:32Speaker 4: Hey, I look good in red. I'm not denying that, but... They're, hey,
- 20:39Speaker 4: party's MVP level, even though he struggled for a lot
- 20:42Speaker 4: of that game against the Broncos. And I'm just waiting
- 20:46Speaker 4: for a team, you know, to make the Niners do
- 20:51Speaker 4: something that they're not good at. But, man, Shanahan, not
- 20:55Speaker 4: a better play caller in the NFL than him. It's
- 20:58Speaker 4: just when big games come around, then he tends to
- 21:00Speaker 4: forget how to play call or time management and those
- 21:03Speaker 4: types of issues, so. But that's a Niner thing. That's
- 21:07Speaker 4: not an Eric Lowe thing. You Niner fans have to
- 21:09Speaker 4: answer those questions and those types of things.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Will they win in Seattle this weekend?
- 21:20Speaker 4: Do I think they'll win in Seattle this week? I
- 21:24Speaker 4: don't think so. But I wouldn't be surprised if they do.
- 21:28Speaker 4: I think, honestly, I think Mike McDonald in Seattle, even
- 21:33Speaker 4: though the Chargers end up scoring a bunch of points
- 21:35Speaker 4: in the third quarter, I think they'll force Purdy to
- 21:39Speaker 4: do things that he's not very well equipped to do,
- 21:42Speaker 4: and that's throw outside the numbers, throw past 15, 20 yards.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I think that's when he'll pack the paint, he'll get
- 21:48Speaker 4: them off the spot, but Purdy's always played good, so
- 21:53Speaker 4: the only time he struggles is if he gets pressure
- 21:55Speaker 4: and he has to move off the spot and has
- 21:57Speaker 4: to throw outside the numbers, so... Can he do that?
- 21:59Speaker 4: And then can Seattle score on the Niners? The Niners
- 22:02Speaker 4: have got one of the best teams in the league,
- 22:03Speaker 4: I think, for the most part. And so I think
- 22:06Speaker 4: it's going to be a close game, toss-up, rivalry game.
- 22:10Speaker 4: And I can say going both ways, obviously I'll take
- 22:11Speaker 4: the home team because I think they're very similar in
- 22:15Speaker 4: defending champs.
- 22:19Speaker 2: The Vikings are also 4-0, which I think, at least
- 22:22Speaker 2: for me, was a decent surprise.
- 22:25Speaker 3: The Kansas City Chiefs are 4-0.
- 22:27Speaker 2: And with that, it's Niners, Vikings, Chiefs that are still
- 22:32Speaker 2: undefeated teams right now in the NFL. Are all three
- 22:37Speaker 2: of those teams for real as at least, you know,
- 22:40Speaker 2: legit playoff teams?
- 22:41Speaker 3: Or are the Vikings going to come back to earth?
- 22:44Speaker 4: Oh, I think they're playoff teams. I don't necessarily think
- 22:47Speaker 4: the Vikings at this point, seeing Kyler Murray play quarterback,
- 22:51Speaker 4: I don't think that's a Super Bowl team as of
- 22:55Speaker 4: right now. Kansas City, obviously, because of the experience and
- 23:00Speaker 4: the history. And the Niners, so that's three. Who was
- 23:04Speaker 4: the fourth one? Was there four?
- 23:06Speaker 3: No, there's three. It's Chiefs, Niners, Vikings.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the Chiefs and Niners are legit Super
- 23:12Speaker 4: Bowl contenders. I'm not sold yet on the Vikings until
- 23:16Speaker 4: I see better quarterback play and offense play. They're winning
- 23:19Speaker 4: because of their defense right now.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Is it time for the Chargers to reconsider the whole
- 23:26Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh thing?
- 23:31Speaker 4: Wow. Oh, I don't think they will because they're notorious
- 23:36Speaker 4: of hanging on head coaches for a long time. And
- 23:40Speaker 4: I don't know if it's because continuity or they don't,
- 23:44Speaker 4: would rather not pay two coaches at once. And so,
- 23:48Speaker 4: but from everything I'm hearing and reading that it's just
- 23:52Speaker 4: dysfunctional and not how it's been the last two years
- 23:56Speaker 4: as Harbaugh has run that ship. So, I don't know, man.
- 24:01Speaker 4: You look at their schedule and how are they not 0-9?
- 24:05Speaker 4: And then you're looking at, holy smokes, total rebuild, burn
- 24:10Speaker 4: it up. You got the number one overall pick, potentially
- 24:13Speaker 4: their top three pick. Then how do you rebuild this
- 24:15Speaker 4: roster around Herbert? And then is Herbert the guy going forward?
- 24:20Speaker 4: Maybe you trade him and get a bunch of first-round
- 24:23Speaker 4: picks and go in a different direction. I don't know.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Those are the questions that are going to happen because–
- 24:29Speaker 4: I don't see it turning around, and it's unfortunate.
- 24:34Speaker 2: What would you do with that Herbert situation? Because it's
- 24:37Speaker 2: kind of a love-hate with the fan base. Even some
- 24:40Speaker 2: analysts are like, he's not the problem, and some are like,
- 24:43Speaker 2: he is the problem.
- 24:45Speaker 3: What would you do with Herbert?
- 24:47Speaker 4: Well, I already know that he is. he's a, he's
- 24:51Speaker 4: a franchise quarterback. Now to what level that is, that's
- 24:55Speaker 4: to be determined, right? Like he's had a struggle to
- 24:58Speaker 4: play off, but he's shown that he can lead a franchise.
- 25:02Speaker 4: So you don't want to like bank on some young kid.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Like I wouldn't do that. So I would continue, like,
- 25:08Speaker 4: I know they drafted the tackles over the last like
- 25:12Speaker 4: five years, they've drafted some, some top talent on the
- 25:15Speaker 4: offensive line and they've just been hurt. So, you've just
- 25:18Speaker 4: got to remind yourself, like, hey, I'm trying to build
- 25:21Speaker 4: around him. They don't have any weapons on the perimeter.
- 25:24Speaker 4: So if I have an overall pick, I'm drafting Jeremiah Smith,
- 25:29Speaker 4: or I'm trading back to get a second first-round pick
- 25:32Speaker 4: or third, like three first-round picks, and I'm getting, like,
- 25:35Speaker 4: multiple receiver running back types to give Herbert and have
- 25:41Speaker 4: them grow together, right? So if there's the depth at
- 25:44Speaker 4: that receiver position or maybe tight ends– For running backs,
- 25:48Speaker 4: if there's enough talent, high-end talent, I would– because I
- 25:53Speaker 4: think they're still a couple years away, so really is
- 25:56Speaker 4: Jeremiah Smith going to make that big difference? If you
- 25:58Speaker 4: feel that way, then you take them. If you think
- 26:01Speaker 4: the depth is there, trade back, get a couple of
- 26:03Speaker 4: other picks, and then build your roster out around Herbert.
- 26:07Speaker 4: So I'm keeping them, and I'm building around them.
- 26:10Speaker 3: All right. Final prediction for Utah-Kansas before I let you go.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Uh, we're playing at home. What's the spread?
- 26:22Speaker 3: I haven't even looked. I think it's eight and a
- 26:24Speaker 3: half for Utah.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Yeah. Honestly, I think it's going to be like a 34,
- 26:31Speaker 4: 10 type game. Maybe like a, maybe, maybe like a 28, 31, seven, uh,
- 26:45Speaker 4: I think they went by double digits. I don't think
- 26:49Speaker 4: it's going to be a 40, 50-point output from what
- 26:51Speaker 4: I've read on their defense. And then depending on the rain,
- 26:56Speaker 4: who knows on that. I think it's a 17 to
- 27:01Speaker 4: 20-point victory, 30 to 10 around that area.
- 27:04Speaker 3: I lied to you. It's 15 and a half for
- 27:07Speaker 3: the Utes.
- 27:08Speaker 4: Okay. I still stick with what I'm predicting.
- 27:12Speaker 2: 68 and wet is the forecast, but they never get
- 27:18Speaker 2: it right in Utah.
- 27:19Speaker 3: We got crazy weather.
- 27:23Speaker 5: All right.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Appreciate you, dude. Have a great weekend. Good luck to
- 27:26Speaker 3: you and your Broncos, your Rancho Bernardo Broncos. Tell the
- 27:29Speaker 3: family we said hi.
- 27:31Speaker 4: You got it, brother. Love you. Love you, dude.
- 27:34Speaker 2: That's Eric Weddle, the Utah football legend, all things college football,
- 27:39Speaker 2: high school football, NFL football.
- 27:41Speaker 3: You can pick his brain. On all of it.
