- 0:08the Cleveland Indians faced the Philadelphia
- 0:10Athletics for the first game of a Sunday afternoon
- 0:12doubleheader at Scheib Park in Philadelphia.
- 0:15The Indians were managed by Lou Boudreau, who
- 0:17would send Bob Lemon to the mound with a 6 -3
- 0:19record. Jimmy Dykes was the skipper of the Athletics,
- 0:22and he sent Bobby Shantz to the mound with a
- 0:245 -4 record. This audio recording is from the
- 0:27radio broadcast featuring announcers Al Helfer
- 0:29and Art Gleason. Good afternoon, everybody. This
- 0:32is Al Helfer with Art Gleason bringing you Mutual's
- 0:34Game of the Day from Sunny Chi Park in the city
- 0:38of Philadelphia. And it is Sunny Chi Park here
- 0:41this afternoon, everybody, with the wind blowing
- 0:43directly in from behind left center field, blowing
- 0:46diagonally across the diamond and going out from
- 0:48behind first base. Right this very minute, the
- 0:50crowd has come in here to Chi Park in anticipation
- 0:53of... Baseball being played between the Cleveland
- 0:56Indians and the homestanding Philadelphia Athletics
- 0:59under Jimmy Dykes. And it is, as you know now,
- 1:02under Jimmy Dykes. Because Connie Mack has now
- 1:05appointed Jimmy Dykes his first lieutenant. And
- 1:08Jimmy Dykes has been given practically the running
- 1:10of the Philadelphia Athletics for the rest of
- 1:11the season. So Jimmy Dykes will lead his Philadelphia
- 1:14Athletics out here to entertain Leupold Rose,
- 1:16Cleveland Indians. And we're expecting quite
- 1:19an affair here this afternoon. The crowd is sitting
- 1:21in quiet anticipation as the groundkeepers, right
- 1:23this minute, are wetting down the infield preparatory
- 1:26to getting this game underway. The bright, brilliant
- 1:29sky is here this afternoon in Philadelphia with
- 1:31just a few of those white, fleecy clouds interdispersed
- 1:35in that blue, and we're just about ready to get
- 1:37this game underway. Art Gleason is sitting by
- 1:40here with the starting lineups, so let's turn
- 1:43old Pop loose and see what he has to say. How
- 1:45about you, Arturo? How do you feel today, kid?
- 1:46Good, Al, and good afternoon, everyone. Here
- 1:49is the way the Cleveland Indians will come up
- 1:52to the plate. In batting order, it's Bob Kennedy
- 1:54in right field. Alec Clark, left field. Luke
- 1:58Easter, first base. Larry Doby, center field.
- 2:02Al Rosen, third base. Lou Boudreau, manager and
- 2:06shortstop. Bobby Avea, second base. Jim Hegan,
- 2:10catcher. And the pitcher, as Al told you, will
- 2:12be Bob Lemon. And for the Philadelphia Athletics,
- 2:16Bob Dillinger will lead off playing at third
- 2:18base. Wally Moses, right field. Paul Lehner,
- 2:22left field. Sam Chapman, center field. Ferris
- 2:27Fane, first base. Eddie Joost, shortstop. Bill
- 2:31Hitchcock, second base. Joe Astroff, catcher.
- 2:35And the pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics
- 2:37will be Bobby Shands. We'll give you the batteries
- 2:41again for the Cleveland Indians, the visiting
- 2:43team here at Chi Park. Bob Lemon. with a record
- 2:47of six victories and three losses, will take
- 2:49the mound. Jim Hegan will do the catching. And
- 2:52for the Philadelphia Athletics, Bobby Shands,
- 2:56with a record of five victories against four
- 2:59losses, will do the pitching, and Joe Ascroft
- 3:02will behind the plate. Lemon, so far, in his
- 3:05six victories, has two shutouts, while Bobby
- 3:08Shands, in his five victories, has one shutout.
- 3:11The umpire for this afternoon's game at the plate
- 3:14is Art Passarella. On first base is Charlie Berry.
- 3:18Hank Soar will call the plays at second base.
- 3:21And over at third base will be Jim Boyer. So
- 3:24the Cleveland Indians coming up to bat now. The
- 3:26conference between manager Lou Boudreau of the
- 3:30Cleveland Indians, Jimmy Dyke of the Philadelphia
- 3:31Athletics. And the four umpires have broken up.
- 3:35The umpires going out to their positions. The
- 3:36Philadelphia Athletics take their positions.
- 3:38And here's the way they go. It's Paul Lehner
- 3:40in left, Sam Chapman in center. Wally Moses over
- 3:43in right field. Bob Dillinger at third. Eddie
- 3:46Joost at short. Bill Hitchcock at second base.
- 3:49Ferris Fane at first. Bobby Shand warming up
- 3:51with Joe Astroff. The first batter up for the
- 3:54Cleveland Indians will be Bob Kennedy. He'll
- 3:56be followed by Alec Clark and Luke Easter. And
- 4:00the coaches for the Cleveland Indians, Oscar
- 4:02Malillo at first base. Al Simmons at third. And
- 4:06so in just a moment now, behind the plate, Art
- 4:09Passarella will call play ball, and this game
- 4:11will get underway. So, Al, will you take over
- 4:15here now and give the folks the batting averages
- 4:18of Kennedy, Clark, and Eastern? Boy, I'll be
- 4:21happy to, Art. I'm ready to go, and so are they
- 4:23down on the field. About Kennedy, the right fielder
- 4:25will be up there hitting a .316. Alec Clark in
- 4:29left field this afternoon for Cleveland in place
- 4:31of Dale Mitchell, as you've already told the
- 4:32folks, hitting a .182. Down on the mound, the
- 4:36little left -hander, Bobby Shands. They call
- 4:37him Old Shandy. A fellow from Putstown, Pennsylvania.
- 4:41He's a little guy. Stands only 5 '7", weighs
- 4:43about 150 pounds with his spikes on and completely
- 4:46soaking wet. Dale Mitchell standing at the plate.
- 4:49Bob Kennedy standing at the plate. And we're
- 4:52waiting for the first pitch to him. The plate
- 4:54umpire, Art Passarella, has called for that ball.
- 4:56He wants to see it once more. Shands throws it
- 4:59down and Passarella looks it over. Charlie Berry
- 5:01down behind first base is getting all set. And
- 5:04has something to say to the Cleveland Indian
- 5:06bullpen crew as they go by him out into the right
- 5:08field bullpen. Now with the outfield turning
- 5:11around toward left as Bob Kennedy comes up there.
- 5:14Dance puts his foot up on the rubber, takes his
- 5:16first sign from Joe Astrov. Kicks, throws, first
- 5:19pitch, and it's a fast one high at the ball one.
- 5:22So this small game between the Cleveland Indians
- 5:23and the Philadelphia Athletics is dropping underway.
- 5:27The left side of the Philadelphia infield playing
- 5:28deep. Kennedy hitting right -handed. Holds that
- 5:32bat up high on his shoulder. Takes a pitch outside
- 5:34from little Bobby Shantz. And the count is two
- 5:37balls, no strikes. Two and nothing. Kennedy's
- 5:42a pretty good -sized guy. He can hit that ball
- 5:44a fair piece for you. Tom Willenoy, boy. Beams
- 5:48over the plate. Comes back nervously. Now places
- 5:50it up on his shoulder. There's Shantz. Left -handing
- 5:55this next one in there. Crossman. In there. Boy
- 5:58strikes. And the count is three and one. Three
- 6:00balls, one strike. Kennedy waits very patiently.
- 6:09Down comes the pitch. A fast and strong foul
- 6:11tip for strike two. Three balls, two strikes.
- 6:15Bobby Schatz, one of the winningest pitchers
- 6:17the Philadelphia Athletics have on the roster
- 6:19at this particular time. As I've told you, he
- 6:20has won five, lost four, and has pitched one
- 6:23shutout. He's going against the old reject third
- 6:26baseman this afternoon, Bob Lemon. Who's won
- 6:28six, lost three, and shut out two. There's a
- 6:32ball hit back to second base. And up with it.
- 6:35Here's second baseman Billy Hitchcock. Very easily
- 6:37flips it over to Ferris Fane at first base. Kennedy
- 6:38is out. One up, one away here in the top half
- 6:42of inning number one. That brings up Allie Clark
- 6:44hitting at 182. Clark playing in left field this
- 6:48afternoon for Cleveland Indians. Allie Clark,
- 6:51South Amboy, New Jersey boy. With South Amboy
- 6:54where they had that great big explosion here
- 6:56a couple weeks back. And he'd like to have an
- 7:00explosion himself right now. He'd like to get
- 7:01a holy one. Alec Clark has hit a home run so
- 7:03far this year. In fact, he has two of them. Takes
- 7:07the first pitch. Outside. The ball one. Chance
- 7:10comes back to the next one. The pass ball. Hit
- 7:12out into right field. There's a long hit ball
- 7:13going toward the scoreboard. Walter Moses backs
- 7:14up. Right under the scoreboard. Next to catch.
- 7:19Walter Moses beating around out there in right
- 7:21field like a young gazelle. You wouldn't think
- 7:23he was rapping on the back row of 40, would you?
- 7:26All right, he really gets around, you know. Al,
- 7:30the ball players will say that Wally Moses and
- 7:32Eddie Stewart down in Washington, they say that
- 7:34they'll be able to run in their 65, 60. Boy,
- 7:37I wouldn't doubt it. Coming up to the plate,
- 7:40batting at 262, is great big Luke Easter, one
- 7:43of the muscle men of baseball. He hits out of
- 7:46left -handed. Next first pitch under his knees
- 7:48to ball one. There are two outs here in the top
- 7:50half of the first inning in this game between
- 7:52Cleveland and Philadelphia. Bobby Shant. Working
- 7:57this afternoon for Connie Maxey. Dix throws a
- 8:00hook that is low and on the outside. Down on
- 8:03Big East with two balls and a strike. This East
- 8:06is no little guy. His name is Lucis. I was in
- 8:11San Diego and Cleveland last year. He was up
- 8:14for 21 ballgames this season. St. Louis Missouri
- 8:17boy. Hits .222 for Cleveland and .363 on the
- 8:20coast. Takes a fast pitch just off the waist
- 8:22on the inside. That's ball three. Even standing
- 8:31out there on the mound, Bobby Shantz looks very
- 8:33small compared to the bigger piece of the plate.
- 8:38He's away from the middle of the 235, 245. Third
- 8:43ball just off his hips on the inside for ball
- 8:44four. Shantz caught him a fast one. So that's
- 8:47the first base runner we've had here this afternoon.
- 8:49Two out, one on, and he's to walk. That gives
- 8:53up his first base on balls. And here is Larry
- 8:57Dobing, who is the number four hitter in the
- 9:00American League, batting a .364. He's done it
- 9:04in 30 runs for the ball club, for Cleveland Indians,
- 9:08and he's going five bases. So he's been pretty
- 9:11valuable this year. He covers a lot of center
- 9:12field. He can really run. Larry Dobie, back left
- 9:15-handed, stands just off the plate. They get
- 9:18back high on his left shoulder. He takes his
- 9:19third ball low and outside. The ball runs. Coming
- 9:22over on the swing this morning. Do some of it
- 9:25out there. I looked up in the forward car, and
- 9:27I thought to myself, that must be Larry Dobie
- 9:29sitting up there. But when we got off the station,
- 9:33Larry looked at me and said, How you doing, Al?
- 9:34And I said, Fine. So we grabbed the car and came
- 9:37over to the ballpark together, and we got to
- 9:38talking about pitches. He swings on this next
- 9:41one, and there's a... Fast curve, fired back
- 9:44onto the screen for a strike one. Count is one
- 9:47and one on Larry Doby. And it was quite surprising
- 9:49to me, in a way, and in another way not so surprising,
- 9:52when Larry Doby said that Ned Garver, the single
- 9:54of Browns, is the pitcher that gave him the most
- 9:56trouble. Chance throws, there's the ball hit
- 9:58back, shortstop. Up with his juice, he plays
- 10:01it back to second base for the Forsyth. This
- 10:04was the fellow calling the Forsyth at second
- 10:06base. And if you're scoring with us this afternoon,
- 10:08that'll be six to four. So that will be up at
- 10:11the Forsyth. Billy Hicks caught handling on the
- 10:13foot out, so there were no runs for the Cleveland
- 10:15Indians in the top half of the first inning.
- 10:17There were no hits. They had one man left on.
- 10:20At the end of the top half of the first inning,
- 10:21the Cleveland Indians nothing, and the Philadelphia
- 10:24Athletics nothing. Now we're ready for the last
- 10:29half of inning number one. And first man coming
- 10:32up to Philadelphia to face Bob Lemon will be
- 10:34Bob Dillinger, the third baseman of Philadelphia.
- 10:38Bob's batting at 3 -0 -1. Respectable right -handed
- 10:42batter. Now, Bob Lemon, out on the mound for
- 10:45the Cleveland Indians with his record of six
- 10:47wins and three losses and two shutouts. Get ready
- 10:50to make the first pass. Bob Lemon, who was born
- 10:52in San Bernardino, California, and now makes
- 10:55his home all the way in Long Beach. He doesn't
- 10:58talk about Long Beach a lot, too. When he and
- 11:00Gleason get together, boy, I'll tell you, California
- 11:01really can't. One way or another. Well, I'll
- 11:05bet you there's a little Pop Lemon listening
- 11:07out there right now. Oh, I wouldn't be a bit
- 11:08surprised. Well, Pop Lemon can really be proud
- 11:10of his boy, Bobby. That can really pitch himself
- 11:13a lot of baseball. The right -hander's ready
- 11:14to throw now to Bob Dillinger. Bob's up for his
- 11:17first setback on the afternoon. Stands very deep
- 11:19at the plate, feet wide, spread apart. First
- 11:21pitch is made by Lemon, inside and tight. That's
- 11:24ball one, right in off the hand. We'll set the
- 11:27Cleveland Indians for you defensively now with
- 11:29Lemon on the mound and behind the plate is Jimmy
- 11:31Higgins. At first base, Big Luke Easton. At second
- 11:34base, Bob Avila, A -V -I -L -A, Bob Avila. There's
- 11:38a pitch to the plate. Taken outside for a ball
- 11:41two. At shortstop is manager Lou Boudreau for
- 11:46Cleveland. The third baseman is Alfred Rosen.
- 11:49Out on left field is Alec Block. There's a pitch
- 11:52to the plate. Right through there for a called
- 11:54strike, and don't you know it. The center fielder
- 11:57is Larry Bobey for Cleveland. And in right field,
- 11:59we have Bob Kennedy. We'll get the umpires to
- 12:02you in a second. We can tell you that it's Art
- 12:04Passarella behind the plate. He's looking down
- 12:06over the shoulder to get a good look at this
- 12:09plate. Says the ball hit down to third. Flip
- 12:10Rosen up with it. Fires it into Easter at first
- 12:12base. And that's all for Dillinger, despite the
- 12:14fact that he was going down there in a big hurry.
- 12:17So Dillinger goes out third to first. Pop three.
- 12:19That brings up Wally Moses. Right fielder. Better
- 12:22than hitting a .288. Moses standing in, bats
- 12:27left -handed. Now, Moses is a guy that keeps
- 12:29his stance almost wide open. He drags that right
- 12:32foot down toward first base and almost faces
- 12:34the pitcher. Cradles that bat in his left arm.
- 12:37Takes a look at the first pitch. It's low for
- 12:38ball one as Lemon goes to work on him. We're
- 12:43in the last half of the first inning. One out,
- 12:46nobody on. No score in this game between Cleveland
- 12:49and Philadelphia. A curveball and a swing on
- 12:51by Wally Moses and beaten down into the ground
- 12:53foul to the left of the plate for a strike. One
- 12:58and one. Now Lemon sets. Puts down, takes his
- 13:10sign. Jim Higgin holds the net up as a target.
- 13:13Wally Moses pumps that bat up and down. Not back
- 13:16and forth, but up and down. Swings on his next
- 13:18pitch. Puts it right off the end of the bat.
- 13:19Foul down the third baseline. Wally Moses, when
- 13:23he handles that bat at the plate. Acts as though
- 13:25it weighed about five times as much as it does.
- 13:27Until he decides he's really going to take a
- 13:29cut at that apple. And then it looks kind of
- 13:32light in his hands. When he pumps that bat, it's
- 13:36not back and forth as most batsmen do. He sort
- 13:39of drops it down and then picks it up. The count
- 13:42on him is one ball, two strikes. Lemon blurs.
- 13:45A fastball. Low for ball two. So the count is
- 13:48two and two now on Weller Moses. We have one
- 13:50out here in the last half of the first inning.
- 13:52Nobody on to come it out again. And the score
- 13:54is nothing and nothing, as Cleveland failed to
- 13:56score in the top half of the first inning. Got
- 13:59a man walked all right. That was Luke Easter.
- 14:01Got him on first base, but Dolby forced him at
- 14:03second. Tom short to second. Down comes the next
- 14:08pitch. It's low, under the knees again. And Willie
- 14:11Moses now has the first down, three and two.
- 14:14On the end of defense, we have two stand -in
- 14:17second basemen this afternoon. Pete Suter is
- 14:19not playing to sum it up yet. And taking his
- 14:22place is Billy Hitchcock. from Opelika, Alabama.
- 14:26And Bob Avila is standing in for Gordon on the
- 14:29inner defense for Cleveland. Three and two, low
- 14:33and outside for ball four. Raleigh Moses draws
- 14:35the base on balls. That's the second free ticket
- 14:38handed out this afternoon. Lemon is given one,
- 14:40and Shanty Shantz is given one from Philadelphia.
- 14:44That chance is about the littlest thing outside
- 14:46of Lombardi. That is Vic Lombardi over with the...
- 14:49Pittsburgh Pirates. About the littlest pitcher
- 14:51I've seen in a long time. Both of them left -handers.
- 14:54We've got another little one here today, too.
- 14:56Little Marino Peretti. Yeah, he's not that big,
- 14:59either. Glad you checked me on that. Let me know.
- 15:01Here's showing to another left -hander. This
- 15:02is Paul Lehner. L -E -H -N -E -R. Paul Lehner
- 15:06for Welcome Adelphi playing in left field. Now,
- 15:08I realize that we can't call this guy Little
- 15:11Poison because it was a guy by the name of Lloyd
- 15:13Wehner that was called Little Poison. But I think
- 15:15we'd better nominate him, Art, for the title
- 15:17of Little Cyanide. That's about as close to it
- 15:19as we can get because he is really poised. And
- 15:21he's batting a .331. He gets that base hit when
- 15:23it hurts you. First pitch to him is a fast one.
- 15:27It's wrapped down the first base line. Luke Easter
- 15:29picks up, plays it over to the pitcher covering,
- 15:32Bob Lemon. And the out has been affected. But
- 15:35just as the out was affected, the first base
- 15:39on par, Charlie Berry said, take it all back,
- 15:41boys, because that's just a little bit foul.
- 15:43That kicked foul on him. So it's just going to
- 15:45go as a strike. Well, the count is one strike
- 15:48on Paul Lehner. He's standing up to the plate
- 15:52now, waiting for the next pitch to be fired in
- 15:54by Lemon. And she rides outside for a ball. And
- 15:58the count is one and one. One ball, one strike.
- 16:01Well, Moses doesn't take a big lead down there
- 16:04at first base, but he's ready to run on anything.
- 16:06These veterans really conserve their energy,
- 16:08you know it? Now he takes his lead. Easter on
- 16:10the inside corner. Lemon checks him over his
- 16:12shoulder. Throws to the plate. It's small to
- 16:13miss for a strike. And Lehner was after him.
- 16:17I might say, but good. The Sliders plowed that
- 16:21ball pretty good for Philadelphia this year.
- 16:24Up with a batting percentage of .331. But that
- 16:27isn't the whole story. He's hit four home runs.
- 16:3357 base hits he's had and 172 times up. Four
- 16:37home runs, a triple, and nine doubles. Swings
- 16:41on this next pitch, and there's a bounding ball
- 16:43down the first baseline, and it kicks foul again.
- 16:46Well, Moses has gone down to second twice now.
- 16:49The veteran has to lug those feet all the way
- 16:52back first. And Lehner comes chomping back to
- 16:57home plate. He's going to pick up that war cut
- 16:59and go again. His count is one and two. We're
- 17:02in the last half of the first inning, one away
- 17:03from Philadelphia. They have one on. There is
- 17:05no score here in this ballgame between Cleveland
- 17:07and Philadelphia. And Cleveland figures to be
- 17:10very much in the American League ratio this year.
- 17:12They haven't given up by a long shot. This guy
- 17:14Boudreau wouldn't let him give up. This guy sitting
- 17:17up in that front office, it feels the same way
- 17:19about it, too. He was quite a competitor when
- 17:21he played ball. Talking about Hank Greenberg.
- 17:25There's Lemon leaning down on his left knee.
- 17:27Ball behind his back. Now he's ready. Comes out.
- 17:30Checks his runner. Throws to the plate. A fastball.
- 17:32Over but low. So the count is two and two now
- 17:35on Paul Leonard, the left fielder, coming out
- 17:37here. Sam Chapman's up there to go next. Old
- 17:40California fullback. He'll be up there doing
- 17:42a little swinging. There, Spain will follow him
- 17:46in case he's needed. Now Lemon delivers. Fastball
- 17:53swung on a miss for a strike, and that's the
- 17:54third one. Well, that's all for Paul Lehner.
- 17:58L -E -H -N -E -R. Lemon hangs up a strikeout.
- 18:03That's the first one we've had here this afternoon.
- 18:05There is Sam Chapman batting a 2 -4 -2. His batting
- 18:08percentage has suffered considerably. But his
- 18:14home run productivity, as far as summit off is
- 18:16concerned, hangs up there at six. Lemon's ready.
- 18:19Throws to a right -handed batsman who stands
- 18:21very deep at the plate. It's a cross fire that
- 18:23misses outside for ball one. So we have two outs
- 18:27here in the last half of the first inning. But
- 18:29what are Moses, who has walked still on the first
- 18:30base? Lemon clears down to take Jim Higgins'
- 18:34sign. There's the middle of the target. Passarella
- 18:36leans over Higgins' left shoulder to get a good
- 18:37look at this pitch. Down it comes. Fastball.
- 18:40It's in there for a strike. Well, that one was
- 18:42popped right through there, and Sam Chapman knew
- 18:44it was popped through. Chapman steps up just
- 18:52a little bit tighter toward the plate. Apparently,
- 18:53Bob Lemon's pitching him a little bit on the
- 18:55outside. Well, Chapman wants to be in there where
- 18:57he can step into the pitch. Moses leads off at
- 19:00first. Lemon throws. A fastball. It misses just
- 19:03outside. Sure enough, that's what Lemon's doing.
- 19:05He's feeding him outside pitches. Trying to keep
- 19:08it away from Chapman to keep his power from going
- 19:11into left field. It's not too far to the left
- 19:13field bleachers down here at Shire Park in Philadelphia.
- 19:16Only 334 feet right into the bleachers down the
- 19:19left field line. And it doesn't fall away very
- 19:21much. Down comes the pitch. It's swung on. The
- 19:23hit and run is on. There goes Moses. The second
- 19:24is a base hit. Into left field. And Moses digging
- 19:26around. As moves into third. And there he holds
- 19:28up. So with the hit and run gone, Chapman delivered.
- 19:32Smack one into left center field. Putting Walter
- 19:35Moses on at third base. And off Lemon, that's
- 19:38hit number one. And that. Joan has hit number
- 19:41one in this game this afternoon. So Lemon's got
- 19:44his work cut out for him now as Ferris Fane,
- 19:46heading to 299, comes running up to the plate.
- 19:49And Luke Woodrow turns around and looks out at
- 19:51his left fielder, Allie Clark, and motions him
- 19:53to come on up and play a little closer in, in
- 19:55left center. As this left -handed batsman, who
- 19:58can tag that apple also, does most of his heading
- 20:01to right and right center field. Now the runner's
- 20:04taking the leads at first and third. Down comes
- 20:06the pitch. Payne backs up from a tight curve
- 20:08and off the waist. The ball won. So we've got
- 20:10a little business cooking here in the last half
- 20:12of the first inning. Payne has hammered in 30
- 20:14runs so far for the Philadelphia Athletics, and
- 20:17he has his chance of picking up another RBI at
- 20:19least. While Moses leads off third, Lemon looks
- 20:23over there, checks him, and looks back over his
- 20:25shoulder, checks the runner at first, throws
- 20:26to the plate, no outside. So we've got a 2 -2
- 20:29count now. Two balls, no strikes. Two outs. Last
- 20:34half of the first inning. Runner at first base,
- 20:37Sam Chapman, delivered with a hit and runner
- 20:39on. And Wally Moses moved around to third, and
- 20:41that's where he is. Now Lemon checks. Looks down
- 20:44at Hegan. Fires away at the plate. The pitch
- 20:46under the knees of Ferris Fane for ball three.
- 20:50Well, Lemon's going to be pretty careful about
- 20:52throwing to Ferris Fane. Because that wind is
- 20:54blowing in very stiffly from behind left center
- 20:56field, it's going to help a fly ball hit into
- 20:58right field. And it's only 331 feet down the
- 21:00right field line, and the home run can be hit
- 21:02up against those boards. Down comes the delivery.
- 21:05A fast one misses outside for ball four, and
- 21:07that loads him up. That pushes Chapman down to
- 21:11second, puts Payne on at first. That's the second
- 21:13base on balls given up by Lemon. And here comes
- 21:16Eddie Juice batting a .250. Juice batting a .250.
- 21:22Has 16 runs batted in so far this year for the
- 21:24A's. Eddie hits him right -handed. Stands deep.
- 21:30The plate sort of hugs up tight from behind.
- 21:32He's turning out to be quite a shortstop. Part
- 21:35of Max Boyd's down here. Eddie Joost standing
- 21:39in. Berman gets ready, makes his first pitch.
- 21:44Joost takes it. It's in there for a strike. Eddie
- 21:50Joost, who does his wintering around Burning
- 21:52Game, California. Born in San Francisco. 175
- 21:59.5 cents. Well, about six feet, I guess. Wears
- 22:03number one on the back of his uniform shirt.
- 22:06Base is loaded. Two outs. Down comes the pitch.
- 22:08Juice takes. Fast and low. The count is one and
- 22:11one. One ball, one strike. Eddie Juice, this
- 22:15year, in getting his 40 base hits, has had three
- 22:20doubles, one triple, and seven home runs. So
- 22:23he can get after that pretty well, too. Lemon
- 22:27throws. Juice swings at a high curve and doesn't
- 22:29get it. That's one and two. One ball, two strikes.
- 22:38Lemon monkeying around on the mound, taking his
- 22:39time. He very definitely has his work all carved
- 22:43and etched out for him. And he'd rather not see
- 22:48it be a permanent thing. Deuce would like to
- 22:51make it permanent. Stands at the plate. Here's
- 22:52the one and two pitch to him. Deuce takes. In
- 22:53there for call. Strike three. And there's no
- 22:55argument from Deuce. So Lemon gets the big one
- 23:00on a strikeout. For the Philadelphia Athletics
- 23:03in the last half of the first inning, a great
- 23:05big threat as they stranded three men on the
- 23:06sacks. There was only one hit, no runs. So at
- 23:12the end of the first inning of play between Cleveland
- 23:14and Philadelphia, the score is Cleveland nothing
- 23:16and Philadelphia nothing. Inning number two on
- 23:20Mutual's Game of the Day between Cleveland and
- 23:23Philadelphia, Chia Park and Philadelphia. The
- 23:26first man up here for Cleveland in the top half
- 23:28of the second inning is a guy that Florida is
- 23:30awfully proud of. A song under the name of Flip
- 23:33Rosen. And Al Rosen, from Spartansburg, South
- 23:36Carolina, who now widows in Kansas City, Missouri,
- 23:39has been adopted apparently by, particularly,
- 23:42the city of Miami, Florida. Because of his great
- 23:45work with the kids down there in the off -season.
- 23:47Comes down and helps youngsters learn how to
- 23:49play baseball. Well, one thing about Flip Rosen,
- 23:52he likes kids. And he wants to see all the boys
- 23:55get a chance to play baseball. He fought for
- 23:57his opportunity. And he's making good in the
- 24:00big show. Right -handed backhand. Hadsman makes
- 24:02a curve high and outside for ball one. Look,
- 24:05Rosen's hitting only .274. But in the home run
- 24:08productivity, he is right high on the list. As
- 24:12far as Cleveland's concerned, he's the boy that's
- 24:14leading the show with 14. Makes a fast curve
- 24:17outside as Shams goes again. The count is two
- 24:20balls and strikes. Rosen's pretty stocky. Sort
- 24:26of thick -chested, square shoulders. Stands deep
- 24:30at the plate and tied up against it. Throws it
- 24:31back way down to Bernard. A little chance throws.
- 24:34Rosen leans, doesn't offer. Takes outside for
- 24:36ball three. Rosen backs away from the plate.
- 24:48And chance gets ready. Now Rosen steps in, chance
- 24:53throws. Right through there for a strike. 3 -1.
- 24:59Shantz slurs back, heaves another one in. It's
- 25:01low and on the inside for ball four. So the first
- 25:04man up there in the top of the second inning,
- 25:05Flip Rosen, draws a walk. The second base on
- 25:07ball is given up by Shantz. The next player is
- 25:10Lou Boudreau. He'll be up in a moment. Let's
- 25:11pause briefly for station identification. This
- 25:13is the mutual broadcasting system. Now we go
- 25:26with Lou Boudreau. Flip Rosen on to first base.
- 25:31No outs. Top of the second inning. Boudreaux
- 25:33up there. He's batting a .254. Swings on to first
- 25:36base. There's a high. Bouncer down to the mound.
- 25:39Shands takes it. Fires it over to first base.
- 25:40In time by Spike. And Rosen moves down to second
- 25:43on the play. That was one of those Baltimore
- 25:45chops hit down off the rubber of home plate.
- 25:47Shands, a little fella, had to wait for it to
- 25:48come down. His quick throw just did beat Boudreaux
- 25:50to the side. Ferris Fane, the first baseman,
- 25:54backing up to take it. So we have one out here
- 25:57on the top of the second inning. Rosen is on
- 25:59at second base, and here is Bob Avila. He's taking
- 26:03the place of Gordon at second base this afternoon
- 26:05for the Cleveland Indians. Bob hasn't played
- 26:09a great deal this year. He's batting at .300.
- 26:11But what we have seen him do, it's been fine
- 26:14business. He was with Baltimore in the International
- 26:17League, .48. Swings on his first pitch. There's
- 26:19a slow -bounding ball back to short. Juiced.
- 26:21He's after it. Picks it up. Snaps it over to
- 26:22Perisbane. In time, there are two outs. as Avila
- 26:25goes out 6 -3 short to first to move Rosendon
- 26:28to third on the play. But this boy, Avila, played
- 26:31with Baltimore in 48 in the International League,
- 26:33and he hit only .220. He was moved up to Cleveland
- 26:37in 49 as utility second baseman, and he played
- 26:40in 31 ballgames and hit .214. He's a good glove
- 26:43man. Ball was born in Veracruz, Mexico. Here
- 26:48is Jim Hagan up there. Makes the first pitch
- 26:51outside for ball one. Jim Hagan batting a .237.
- 26:56Jimmy Higgins, been a bulwark on that Cleveland
- 26:58catching staff. Lynn, Massachusetts boy, hit
- 27:01.224 for Cleveland last year in 152 ballgames.
- 27:04Big fella, weighs about 200 pounds, stands a
- 27:06couple inches over 6 feet. From Shantz, out of
- 27:10the mound, 5 feet 7, fires it fast and picks
- 27:12up the outside corner for a strike. Countess,
- 27:141 and 1. There's no score in this game, but Cleveland's
- 27:17got its best -looking threat cooking right now.
- 27:19With Rosen on the third and two away. Cleveland's
- 27:21got its best -looking threat cooking right now.
- 27:23With Rosen on the third and cooking right now.
- 27:24With Rosen on the third and two away. Chance
- 27:28trying to keep the nothing miss going in this
- 27:30ballgame. Delivers a fastball. Higgins swings
- 27:31on it. Misses. First strike. That's the second
- 27:34one. That was a high curve. Higgins likes those
- 27:37high curves. On the way up home run, Hagan has
- 27:43hit only two this year. He hit one last month,
- 27:47and he's hit one this month. Chance kicks, throws.
- 27:51The little softball has a curve in there. It's
- 27:52hit out into left field. There's a blooper going
- 27:53into left center field. It's in for a base hit.
- 27:55And Rosen comes in to score, and it's a 1 -0
- 27:58ball game as Hagan loops one into left center
- 28:00field to get himself his 11th run batted in this
- 28:03year. And that off chance is only... Their first
- 28:07hit of the ball game, but he gives up the first
- 28:09run on it. A walk. A couple of infield outs.
- 28:17Turn to pick for Cleveland here, and in the top
- 28:19of the second inning, they're out in front now.
- 28:21I'll throw it out for you, 1 -0. And again is
- 28:23Bob Lemon, and a dope monkey with him. He's a
- 28:25good hitter for a pitcher. Takes a curveball
- 28:28in there for a strike. No wonder he's a good
- 28:31hitter. He had some time as a third baseman.
- 28:33Came up to the Cleveland Indians as a third baseman.
- 28:36And they kid him and laugh at him now and call
- 28:37him the reject third baseman. He's quite a pitcher.
- 28:40The fastball thrown to him. Low for ball one.
- 28:43One and one. Bob Lemon is hitting at 263. That's
- 28:48a pretty lofty batting percentage. They use him
- 28:50as a pinch hitter quite often. I get a great
- 28:54kick out of Art calling him the reject. There's
- 28:56a curveball flipped in and over at the knees
- 28:57for a strike. We were going out to Cleveland
- 29:00Stadium one afternoon, a municipal stadium in
- 29:01Cleveland. We thought everyone had gone home.
- 29:03We'd stayed over. Did some chinning and jawing
- 29:07with Mr. Ryan and Hank Greenberg. Lo and behold,
- 29:10standing out there signing autographs was Bob
- 29:12Lemon, who right now swings and fouls it off
- 29:15into the screen for a strike. His count is one
- 29:16and two. So we came walking through the door,
- 29:19and old Pops Gleason, he's just as sassy as a
- 29:21deer bird sitting on a log, he yelled out, Hey,
- 29:24what are you doing there, reject? And Lemon,
- 29:26without looking around, said, Gleason's out here
- 29:28someplace. He's here. Bob Lemon down there now,
- 29:34hitting at one ball, two strikes. Swings on this
- 29:36pitch. It's right back to the mound. A nice stop
- 29:38by Bobby Shantz. A fire over to first base. That's
- 29:39all for Lemon. That Shantz really stretched that
- 29:41time to take that line drive. There was a bounder
- 29:44right at his feet. Oh, Lemon is out. Pitcher
- 29:47to first base. And that's all for Cleveland.
- 29:49However, they do pick up a run to go ahead here
- 29:51in the top of the second inning. One run on just
- 29:53one hit. There was one man left on. There were
- 29:56no errors. So at the end of one and a half innings
- 29:58of play, the score stands Cleveland 1. And the
- 30:01Philadelphia Athletics, nothing. Now for the
- 30:05last half of inning number two. Down here at
- 30:09Shire Park in Philadelphia, we have Cleveland
- 30:11and the homestanding Philadelphia Athletics.
- 30:13First man up for the A's will be Billy Hitchcock.
- 30:16We said before, from Opelika, Alabama. He was
- 30:19born in Inverness, Alabama, and I hope I'm pronouncing
- 30:21that correctly. And you folks down around Alabama
- 30:23call it Inverness. Or how do you all pronounce
- 30:27it? I can remember an airport down in the south
- 30:31called Opelika Airport. But I don't know, when
- 30:35you get on some of these names, especially Indian
- 30:38names, et cetera, you have a little trouble with
- 30:40them. I know our good friend Art Greason here
- 30:43has trouble with a valley and a river called
- 30:45Monongahela. How do you pronounce it again, Art?
- 30:48Mongolia. Mongolia, yeah. I'm going to get together
- 30:51with Stan Musial someday. I'll bet you you can't
- 30:54pronounce that. No. He's going to get together
- 31:00with Stan Musial, that kid. Billy Hitchcock up
- 31:02there, batting right -handed. Takes a fast curve.
- 31:04Up by the peak of the cap for ball one. Billy
- 31:08Hitchcock has weighed in for a master this year
- 31:12for Philadelphia. He's hit one up. He pounds
- 31:16the next pitch down to third base. Rosen picks
- 31:18it up on the skip, fires it over to Easter at
- 31:19first, and Billy Hitchcock is out. Third to first.
- 31:23High -bounding ball that Rosen handled very well.
- 31:26Here is Joe Astrod. He's catching first time
- 31:29in the last four days. Joe Astrod of East Alton,
- 31:36Illinois. Now lives in Alton. With Philadelphia
- 31:39last year, he hit .243. Right now, he's hitting
- 31:42.250. Right -handed batsman stands just off the
- 31:46plate. Takes a curve in for a strike. Rob Lemon
- 31:49seems to have settled down considerably over
- 31:50his first inning. in which he had a little bit
- 31:53of wildness jump up and bite him, but a couple
- 31:54of strikeouts by Bob Lemon sort of wiped that
- 31:57right off the books. Lemon throws. The right
- 31:59-hander has a curve in there that's partially
- 32:01swung on, but Astroff checks himself in time
- 32:03to take a ball. One ball, one strike to count
- 32:07on Joe Astroff. You spell his name A -S -T -R
- 32:12-O -T -H. These fellows that we don't hear too
- 32:15much about or don't get to see too often. We
- 32:18like to spell the names for you, so the next
- 32:20time the guy's name is mentioned, you'll have
- 32:21a pretty good idea how to spell it. A fair ball
- 32:24in at his knees this time, thrown by Lemon. A
- 32:25change -up. The ball two. Two and one. The outfield
- 32:31for Astroff is playing around the left and playing
- 32:32it pretty deep. He hasn't tagged one yet this
- 32:38year, but he can. He swings on this pitch, hits
- 32:40the ball to shortstop. Boudreaux picks it up
- 32:42very easily. Lobs his throw over to first base
- 32:44to Easter, and the slow -moving Astroff is out.
- 32:48One away. Whoop. Check it back there, Helfer.
- 32:52What you doing? That's two away. All right. Gleason
- 32:54will. I got to out -think this guy here once
- 32:59in a while. He's just about ready to climb on
- 33:01my neck. He's about to say, hey, old buddy got
- 33:03two outs down there. Watch yourself. Watch yourself.
- 33:06Can't you just hear him? Bobby Sands, batting
- 33:10right -handed. He throws them left, but swings
- 33:12at them right. Didn't swing at that one, though.
- 33:14Lemon had it in there for a strike. Nothing to
- 33:18want as a counter on Bobby Shantz. He works so
- 33:20far up on the handle of the bat, you don't know
- 33:21whether he's holding it in the middle or not.
- 33:22Swings on this pitch. Misses it for a strike.
- 33:25And when he swings on that ball down there, he's
- 33:28got to hold that bat far enough away from his
- 33:30body because when he comes around on his swing,
- 33:32if he has a two -day against his body, he's going
- 33:33to hit himself in the short ribs with the short
- 33:35end of the bat. Swings on this next pitch and
- 33:38misses for strike three. Little fun is out of
- 33:40there. That's the third out here in the last
- 33:42half of the second inning. And for Bob Lemon,
- 33:44that's strikeout number three. So he's moving
- 33:45right along. In the second inning, nothing across
- 33:48for the Philadelphia Athletics. And at the end
- 33:50of two full innings, Chive Park and Philadelphia,
- 33:52the score is the Cleveland Indians 1, the Philadelphia
- 33:56A's nothing. The crowd here at Philadelphia,
- 33:58and it's a good one, quietly sits back and waits
- 34:00for the third inning. Art Gleason steps forward
- 34:03and pours these words into this microphone. Well,
- 34:05Al, before starting the third, we'd like to thank
- 34:08the sponsors of Queen for a Day, Alka -Seltzer,
- 34:10and One A Day Brand Vitamins, and the sponsors
- 34:12of Lady Fair. Sampson and Bakhtin for delaying
- 34:16their broadcast in order that you might hear
- 34:17Mutual's game of the day uninterrupted. Queen
- 34:20Fred Day and Lady Sparrow will be heard over
- 34:22most of these stations immediately following
- 34:24this baseball broadcast. So here we are. The
- 34:26top of the third inning. The top of the batting
- 34:28order stands in. It's Bob Kennedy. That's him
- 34:31right -handed. Shands ready to pitch. Throws,
- 34:33and there's a drive going out to right center
- 34:34field. It's dropping in there for a base hit.
- 34:37Chapman is moving back, playing the ball, and
- 34:38the play goes in to second base. It's going to
- 34:40be close. He's in. And Bob Kennedy picked on
- 34:43the first ball pitch to him. Sent a long drive
- 34:45out to right center field, which forced Sam Chaplin
- 34:48to move quickly to his left. Chaplin came up
- 34:50with the ball, threw him to Andy Joost, but too
- 34:52late as Bob Kennedy slid in with the second hit
- 34:56in the ball game off Bobby Shands. So Kennedy
- 35:01is on. Cleveland Indians now have a runner in
- 35:04scoring position. Bob Kennedy on second base
- 35:07here in the top of the third with nobody out.
- 35:09And the batter is Allie Clark. He sent a fly
- 35:12ball to right field his first time up. Takes
- 35:14the first pitch, a call strike on him. And Shands
- 35:16fired a fastball over the outside corner. Don't
- 35:20confuse Bobby Shands with Charlie Shands, who
- 35:23pitches with the Boston Red Sox. Bobby spells
- 35:25his name S -H -A -N -T -Z, and Charlie Shands
- 35:29spells his name a little differently. The next
- 35:32ball pitched, and Clark drills it a hard line
- 35:34drive down the third baseline. Dillinger's up
- 35:36with it on the first hop, throws over to first
- 35:38base, and that's all for Clark. Dillinger took
- 35:42that ball, a very hard smash on the first hop,
- 35:45turned and chased Bob Kennedy back into second
- 35:47base, and then cut loose with a throw across
- 35:49the infield of Ferris Fane, and Clark was up
- 35:52by a stride at first base. So there's one away
- 35:54here in the top half of the third. And that brings
- 35:57up big Luke Easter. Luke walked his first time
- 36:01up, so he has not been officially charged for
- 36:04the time at bat. And the big guy bats left -handed.
- 36:08The first pitch to him. Shands takes a look at
- 36:10the runner. Stretches, throws. It's a strike
- 36:12ball. And Shands caught the inside corner with
- 36:16a curveball. They pitch this big fellow, Luke
- 36:18Easter, fairly tight. They try to keep the ball
- 36:21on the inside to him to prevent him from using
- 36:23that tremendous weight which he has. Here's the
- 36:26next pitch. Swung on, and it's a drive down the
- 36:28third baseline. Just inside the bag. Here comes
- 36:31Kennedy, turning third. Easter's going into second
- 36:34base, and he is in, standing up with a double.
- 36:39Shands now picks up the sign from Astroff, winds,
- 36:41throws, and it's high inside. The count is now
- 36:463 -1. So far, the Cleveland Indians getting off
- 36:51to a rollicking start here in this ballgame at
- 36:53Shide Park. I was kidding Bob Lemon before the
- 36:56ball game started down on the bench, and he almost
- 36:59chased me right out of the ballpark, Al. Oh,
- 37:01you're always kidding him. Here's the next pitch,
- 37:04and Dobie takes high inside for ball four. And
- 37:08that is walk number three, given up by Bobby
- 37:12Shands here this afternoon. So the tiny left
- 37:20-hander has been touched for two runs on three
- 37:23hits, and he's walked three. The Indians now,
- 37:26runners on first and second. The batter standing
- 37:29in is Al Rosen. He walked his first time up,
- 37:31and it cost Shands. He scored the first one of
- 37:34the ball game. The first pitch to him, it's high
- 37:37outside, ball one. As Frankie Fish always says,
- 37:40the base on balls will kill you. That's what
- 37:44he said, and I heard the man say it. Yes, sir,
- 37:48they're crossmen. I used to laugh at him when
- 37:50he was broadcasting hard. He'd throw his hands
- 37:52up in the air and say, Oh, those bases aren't
- 37:54balls. He's probably voted twice as loud now,
- 37:58hasn't he? Yeah, I wouldn't doubt it. Here's
- 37:59the next pitch to Rosen. He sends a line smash
- 38:02right into center field. Here comes Eastwood
- 38:04rounding third base, coming in to score. The
- 38:05throw comes in from Chapman, and it's cut off
- 38:07by Fane. And another run comes in to score for
- 38:10the Cleveland Indians. So, we're frozen. Delts
- 38:17a solid single into center field to score Easter
- 38:20from second base and send Dobie on to second.
- 38:23And that is run batted in number 40 for Al Rosen.
- 38:33Well, here in the top of the third inning, the
- 38:35Indians going right to work. Kennedy got a double.
- 38:37Clark bounced out to third. Easter hit a double
- 38:40to score Kennedy. Dobie walked, and now Rosen
- 38:42drives in another run with a single. There he
- 38:46is. Lou Boudreau hits the first ball pitch to
- 38:48him. It's a line drive into center field. Taken
- 38:53by Wally Moses. That is a double play. It's a
- 38:56double play. Lou Boudreau steps up there batting
- 39:00right -handed. Hits the first ball pitch to him
- 39:01to Wally Moses in right field. Moses caught the
- 39:04ball. Threw him to first base to Ferris Payne.
- 39:08And the play went 9 -3 -6. Ferris Fane momentarily
- 39:12held the ball because he thought he had a chance
- 39:14that they might call Rosen out at first. And
- 39:16while Fane was holding the ball, Dobie had gone
- 39:19all the way over to third. So Fane just merely
- 39:22threw over to Eddie Juice. And Dobie had no chance
- 39:25to get back to second base in time. So the double
- 39:28play went 9 -3 -6. And here in the top half of
- 39:31the third inning, for the Cleveland Indians,
- 39:33there were two runs on three hits and one man
- 39:37left on. And so the score at the end of two and
- 39:39a half innings, the Cleveland Indians three,
- 39:42the Philadelphia Athletics nothing. Well, now
- 39:47for the business of the last half of the third
- 39:49inning as the Philadelphia Athletics trail by
- 39:51three runs, and the double play just completed
- 39:54by Philadelphia was their 70th of the season,
- 39:57and they lead the American League in the double
- 39:59play department. Who do I really hit that ball?
- 40:03Well, to start things off, the top of the batting
- 40:05order stands in for the Athletics. Bob Dillinger
- 40:07starts off for the A's. Takes the first ball
- 40:10pitch to him. And it's outside. Ball one. Dillinger,
- 40:14the spectacle third baseman. Bats a right hand.
- 40:19Stands with his feet well apart in the batter's
- 40:21box. Bob Lemon on the mound. Has his sign from
- 40:24Hegan. Lines. Here's the pitch. It's a strike
- 40:27call. as Dillinger looked at a slider. Bob Lemon's
- 40:32chief pitch that he gets you out on, he likes
- 40:35to throw that slider. It's a fastball that breaks
- 40:37and dips a little bit as it gets up to the plate.
- 40:40To the next one, swung on and fouled back to
- 40:42the screen, strike two. I was kidding Bob down
- 40:46on the bench before the ballgame started. I said,
- 40:48Bob, you know, in the last five days, I've seen
- 40:51five ballgames, and I've seen 122 runs scored
- 40:55on 158 hits. And Bob says, well, if you think
- 40:59you're going to jinx me, he says, just back up
- 41:01your microphones and get out of town. Well, now
- 41:07Lemon's ready for the next one. It is. And he
- 41:09sidearms him. Strike three called. Bob Lemon
- 41:12started well over toward third base, came around
- 41:15with that sidearm, and a fastball caught the
- 41:18outside corner to Dillinger for strike three.
- 41:21So Bob Lemon's rather hot here this afternoon.
- 41:23Four strikeouts so far in... Get a two -plus
- 41:27inning. Now let's see. He struck out Lehner,
- 41:32struck out Juice, struck out Shands, and now
- 41:34he strikes out Dillinger. Wally Moses hits the
- 41:36first ball pitch to him. It's a solid single
- 41:38in the left field as Wally goes down and takes
- 41:40the turn. Larry Doby feeling the ball, coming
- 41:42in on it, and tossing in the second base. Elderly
- 41:48Wally. He touches Lemon for his second hit. That's
- 41:53the second solid single. which has been surrendered
- 41:57by Lemon. Sam Chapman got the other one. So the
- 42:02Athletics here in the last half of the third
- 42:03inning striving to get back into this ballgame.
- 42:06They need three runs. Now Wally Moses on first
- 42:08with one out. The next batter up is Paul Lehner.
- 42:12He takes low and inside a curveball for ball
- 42:14one. Lehner struck out his first time up, but
- 42:18he's batting for an average of 331, getting off
- 42:20to 331, getting off to 330. One of the finest
- 42:24starts. on one of the finest starts of his baseball
- 42:28career. That's a left -handed. That's a left
- 42:32-handed. Ball two, a slider low outside. Lehner
- 42:40stands with his, he's a left -handed batter,
- 42:42and he stands with his left foot as far back
- 42:44in the batter's box as he can get it, but he's
- 42:46up close. He hugs that plate. Slips up on the
- 42:49bat just slightly. Here's the next pitch to him.
- 42:51He takes inside for ball three. And the count
- 42:55is 3 -0. Bob Lemon now. Checks Moses as he moves
- 43:05off first. Here's the next pitch. Swung on and
- 43:09it's a high pop fly going to the infield. Flip
- 43:12Rosen shading his eyes, calling for the ball
- 43:14just off third base. And he makes the catch.
- 43:17And that's all for Paul Lehner as he pops out
- 43:21to Flip Rosen. So, two men are out. Top of the
- 43:28last half of the third inning. And standing in
- 43:32now is the cleanup hitter of the Athletics, Sam
- 43:35Chapman. And he bats them right -handed. Sam
- 43:37got a single to left field. Left center his first
- 43:39time up. You know, the funny thing about this,
- 43:43Bob Lemon, before the ball game will be over,
- 43:46his shirt tail will be really pulled out. Lots
- 43:48of times he has to call time and tuck it in.
- 43:51Now he checks Moses. Here's the pitch to Chapman.
- 43:54And it's a strike call. Chapman had a notion
- 43:56to go after that pitch. He held back, but the
- 43:59ball was right in there. And so the count on
- 44:01him is strike one. And all of the ball players
- 44:05will tell you that the farther Bob Lemon's shirt
- 44:08comes out of his trousers, the more stuff he
- 44:11has, the more he's staring down. Here's the next
- 44:14pitch. And Chapman takes outside for a ball.
- 44:171 -1. They play Sam Chapman deep, foot frozen
- 44:21directly below us. We're high up on top. of the
- 44:24second deck here at Chi Park in Philadelphia.
- 44:26And you look right down on third base. And Flip
- 44:30Rosen is playing well deep back of third and
- 44:32about six feet off the line. They're playing
- 44:35Chapman to pull that ball. Larry Dilley playing
- 44:36in left center. Chapman bats him right -handed,
- 44:39you know. Here's the next pitch to him. He takes
- 44:43outside for ball two. And it comes two and one.
- 44:47Coaching for the Philadelphia Athletics at first
- 44:48base is Bing Miller. And directly below us at
- 44:51third base is Jimmy Dykes. Well, there's a couple
- 44:55of great athletics of yesteryear on the coaching
- 44:57line. Here's the next pitch by Lemon, and he
- 45:02fires a fastball right across the letters to
- 45:04Chapman for called strike two. So on the scoreboard,
- 45:08see two balls, two strikes on the hitter, two
- 45:10men out. Wally Moses playing close at first,
- 45:16taking no chances. Athletics failing here by
- 45:20a three to nothing score in the last half of
- 45:22the third inning. It's turned out to be one of
- 45:24those closing. Chance taking his time. Left -handed
- 45:32throws. Fastball is hit down and through into
- 45:34left field. Right between short and third and
- 45:36out into left. And the billet is on. As the ball
- 45:39is picked up out in left field by Paul Lehner.
- 45:42Fired into second base. The billet hits park.
- 45:46So a billet starts the fourth inning with a single
- 45:48to left. And that off chance will be hit number
- 45:51five. Jimmy Higgins. Had a single at the left
- 45:56center field back in second inning. And drove
- 45:58in one of the Cleveland three runs. He started
- 46:00off today. He's 2 -37. All right -handed batsman.
- 46:05Feet wide spread apart. Squares up the butt.
- 46:07Pushes the bunt back toward the mound. Chance
- 46:09steals it. His tag goes back to second base.
- 46:11And it's in time. Two integers for Forsyth. Arn
- 46:15Higgins coming. Arn Higgins coming down. Arn
- 46:18Higgins coming down. One attempted sacrifice.
- 46:21Goes over Forsyth. Ted Higgins on first base.
- 46:27And on that attempted sacrifice. The juice going
- 46:31with this afternoon. Have Avila out at second
- 46:33as it goes from Chance the pitcher to Eddie Juice.
- 46:36The shortstop covering at second base. Chance
- 46:38had to hurry on that and did it very nicely.
- 46:41The batter now is Todd Lemon. Todd is four for
- 46:46one. He hit back to the mound and was thrown
- 46:47out in the second inning. Lieutenant Baxman groups
- 46:49one over third base and it drops foul. Test outside
- 46:51of the line. As he went for shot of the line.
- 46:54As he went for shot of the line. As he went for
- 46:57shot outside pitch. It was a slider thrown to
- 46:59a left -handed batter. For the count is nothing
- 47:02and one on Bob Lemon. And while Lemon comes back
- 47:06up to the plate, let's pause briefly for station
- 47:07identity. This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 47:23Now Bob Lemon has stepped back in with one out
- 47:25and one on here in the top of the fourth inning.
- 47:28Waggles that bat back and forth and snaps with
- 47:30Soper Keegan. Down comes the pitcher, Edgo Segan.
- 47:31The ball is swung on and a slow dribbler through
- 47:33the infield in the left. Edgo Segan in the third.
- 47:36Maynard Snow comes in through. He was your third
- 47:38in time for the out. You know, he can slid in
- 47:42the third all right, but he didn't get there
- 47:43in time. So Lemon will be credited with a single
- 47:46in the left field. He stays at first base. He
- 47:48didn't move. Higgins will be moved down to second
- 47:50on that single in the left field. But Paul Lehner,
- 47:53very nice throw to Bob Dillinger at third base,
- 47:56gets Higgins sliding into third for out number
- 47:57two. Higgins into third. Lehner's show comes
- 48:01in to lose your third in time for the out. Higgins
- 48:06slid into third all right, but he didn't get
- 48:07there in time. So Lemon will be credited with
- 48:09a single in the left field. He stays at first
- 48:11base. He didn't move. Higgins will be moved down
- 48:14to second on that single in the left field. But
- 48:16Paul Lehner, very nice throw to Bob Dillinger
- 48:18at third base, gets Higgins sliding into third
- 48:21for out number two. That'll be hit number six
- 48:25off Chance. I imagine Chance will give you a
- 48:28base hit any time for an out. There are two outs
- 48:31here in the top half of the fourth inning. Lemon
- 48:33is on his first base, and the batter now is Kennedy.
- 48:36Bob has one hit in two times. Up he got a double
- 48:38to right center field back in the third inning.
- 48:40He was worked around to score when Easter accidentally
- 48:41doubled down the left field line following him.
- 48:43There's a curveball into a right -handed batsman
- 48:45for a strike. Very nice one. Flipped in and over.
- 48:493 -2 in favor of the Cleveland Indians. Overcovered
- 48:51out here as we are moving in the top half of
- 48:53the fourth inning at Shire Park. Chance kicks,
- 48:55throws, fastball, swung on and fouled off to
- 48:57the right of the plate. Moving on that one also
- 49:00was Bob Lemon. He was running. Well, he has to
- 49:04go back and do it all over again. What a nice
- 49:08warm day here at Chai Park in Philadelphia. Brilliant
- 49:10sunshine, blue skies, white fleecy clouds. Anybody
- 49:17bring my hammock? How's that again, Mr. Wilson?
- 49:23Yeah, get real tired. This is just the kind of
- 49:28day you like to lean back and watch these boys
- 49:30working down on the field. Pass pitch by Bobby
- 49:33Shantz is outside to a right -handed batsman.
- 49:36The count is one ball now and two strikes. Kennedy
- 49:42seems to bend those knees down and sort of spring
- 49:45at the pitch as it's thrown in there. Shantz
- 49:47delivers. High and outside. A pitch out. Throw
- 49:50down to first base. Hot in time. Very close at
- 49:52first. Lemon had to hustle to get back in. Ferris
- 49:54Fane left that ball around on him. Astroff is
- 49:57called for a pitch out. Well, the count is two
- 50:01and two. Oh, and Bob Kennedy up there batting.
- 50:05Edmund was pretty hard -pressed to get back in.
- 50:08Had to come back in with a hook slide. Chance
- 50:11delivers 2 -2, and the ball is hit off the end
- 50:13of the back foul down the first baseline. So
- 50:19it counteracts right along, and two balls, two
- 50:20strikes. Got quite a kick out of a letter sent
- 50:26to us from North Carolina, telling us about...
- 50:31The doings down in North Carolina. We like to
- 50:33visit back and forth with you folks. Guns throws.
- 50:37Fastball is hit down to shortstop. Jukes is up
- 50:39with it. Makes the long play across the diamond
- 50:41to feign a first base. And that's off Kennedy.
- 50:45Though one man was stranded on, a threat but
- 50:48no more. No runs, two hits. No errors, one man
- 50:51left on. At the end of three and a half innings
- 50:53of play, the score, Cleveland Indians three,
- 50:56the Philadelphia A's two. Well, let's see. Now
- 51:02our right -handed engineer, Al Smith, is opening
- 51:06the tensiometer for the last half of inning number
- 51:09four. Eddie Juice is going to open it for Philadelphia
- 51:11as the batsman. He'll be followed by Hitchcock
- 51:13and then by Astrov. Three to two in favor of
- 51:16Cleveland as Bob Lemon goes out to the hill to
- 51:19do the pitching for the Indians. A few minutes
- 51:21ago, Art Gleeson was talking about the All -Star
- 51:24game and about the proceeds from the All -Star
- 51:26game going to take care of baseball's own. But
- 51:29don't forget, you the fans have your opportunity
- 51:31again this year of selecting the starting lineups
- 51:34in the All -Star Game. You can select everybody
- 51:37but the starting pitchers. We'll tell you about
- 51:40that in just a few moments and how you can do
- 51:41it. As Lemon pitches to the plate, there's a
- 51:43ball swung on. A foul tipped by Eddie Deuce.
- 51:47His count is nothing and one now. He struck out
- 51:50the first inning. We'd like all of our good friends
- 51:53to be able to vote for the ball clubs. and the
- 51:57players that they want to see play in the All
- 51:58-Star game. And here's how you do it. And we're
- 52:01going to help you. All you have to do is take
- 52:03a fresh, clean piece of paper. On one side, mark
- 52:08American League. And on the other side, mark
- 52:11National League. And then name your starting
- 52:14lineups, excluding the pitcher. That's true.
- 52:18Everybody, every position, but the pitcher. The
- 52:21managers have that prerogative. They can select
- 52:23the pitchers themselves. Now we'll, after this
- 52:27next pitch, I'll tell you about it. Juice takes
- 52:28it. It's right through there for a strike. Nothing
- 52:32he can do is to count on Eddie Juice. Then after
- 52:34you have your team selected, send them in to
- 52:36Mutual's game of the day. Mutual Broadcasting
- 52:41System, New York 18, New York. And mark on the
- 52:44outside of the envelope, baseball ballot. There's
- 52:48a side armor thrown in there. Juice takes a blow.
- 52:50And the count is one and two. And then Art Gleason
- 52:54and I will see to it that your vote is given
- 52:56to the proper authority. So it can be counted.
- 52:59But you must do it before Friday, June the 23rd.
- 53:03There's a curveball thrown in there to juice.
- 53:05It's outside. Count us two and two. Because you
- 53:07see, the balloting on the All -Star game ends
- 53:11at midnight on Friday, June 23rd. And we must
- 53:16have it before that time so we can tote it over
- 53:17to the offices where they're making the count.
- 53:19But come on now, folks. Name your all -star team.
- 53:21You've got a chance to do it this year. Curveball
- 53:24thrown to Juice. And they're good for call strike
- 53:26three. So we have one out here in the last half
- 53:31of the fourth inning. And Bob Lemon has just
- 53:33thrown his fifth strikeout. Here is Billy Hitchcock.
- 53:40We haven't heard a great deal about Billy Hitchcock.
- 53:42He's a utility infielder on the athletics. But
- 53:46kind of gets you caught up on Billy. He's a Scotch
- 53:50-Irishman and attended Auburn College down in
- 53:53Auburn, Alabama. Got a B .A. degree from there.
- 53:55He's a Bachelor of Arts, this young fella. Right
- 53:57-handed batsman. At B .A., he would like to make
- 54:00batting average up here in the Big Show. There's
- 54:03a curve to him outside for a ball. He started
- 54:07out in 1939 with Kansas City in the New York
- 54:11Yankee chain, where he played third base and
- 54:13shortstop. Down comes the pitch to him. Another
- 54:16one outside. Sweeping curve. This time it's two
- 54:21balls, no strikes. And with Kansas City back
- 54:23in 39. 11 years ago, Billy Hitchcock hit 263.
- 54:29Last year with Boston, he hit 204. He was with
- 54:32Boston Red Sox as the first baseman, second baseman.
- 54:35With them in 48 and 49. Previous to that time
- 54:38was with St. Louis, Georgia, and Washington.
- 54:41Hitchcock takes a curve. Misses low. That's ball
- 54:43three. Three balls, no strikes. We're in the
- 54:49last half of the fourth. One out, nobody on.
- 54:51The Cleveland Indians leading 3 -2. Now Lemon
- 55:03ready. Throws. Hitchcock takes. A nice one due
- 55:05there for a strike. 3 -1 is the count on Bill
- 55:08Hitchcock. Hitchcock standing just off the plate.
- 55:17A little back from it. Has a straightaway pass
- 55:21to the kicker. Holds that bat in his right shoulder.
- 55:23Makes a curve inside at the knee. Ball four.
- 55:26So Hitchcock has walked. That's the third base
- 55:29on ball that's given up by Bob Lemon. Now Lemon
- 55:34has to face Joe Astroth. Another fellow we haven't
- 55:39heard a great deal about either. Astroth hasn't
- 55:42been doing all the hind snatching here for coming
- 55:43out here. Now the name of Furman Guerra has been
- 55:48working quite a bit behind the plate, but Joe
- 55:50Astoroff started off with Philadelphia in 1945
- 55:52with the Athletics. Caught ten games for them
- 55:56that year. That was his first year in baseball.
- 55:57He takes a pitch now high up with the cap for
- 55:59ball one. He didn't do much hitting in 1945.
- 56:03His batting percentage was only 0 -5 -9. Then
- 56:06he ventured into the minor leagues. Toronto,
- 56:09Lancaster, then came back to Philadelphia in
- 56:1146. Swings on his pitch and fouls it off. The
- 56:14count is 1 -1. Then in 1947, down in the Sally
- 56:18League, Joe Astroff showed up with Savannah.
- 56:20He was with Memphis in 1948 and 1949. The athletics
- 56:24said, come on back home now, Joe, and catch two
- 56:26ballgames for us. So he was in 55, where he batted
- 56:29160, wait a minute, 243. So Joe Astroff has been
- 56:34around ever since. Joseph Henry Astroff. He attended
- 56:37University of Illinois in 1941 -42. Another college
- 56:41board playing ball. Bob Levin throws, one and
- 56:43one, and Astroff tweets it back to shortstop.
- 56:46Boudreaux shovels it over. That's a 50th double
- 56:50play for Cleveland. First one here this afternoon.
- 56:53It's all caught in the middle of that double
- 56:54play with Hitchcock. It was a 6 -4 -3 affair.
- 56:57And starting it was the manager himself, Lou
- 56:59Boudreaux. Big Luke Easter closed it out at first
- 57:03base with the sweep of that big meta here. So
- 57:05there's nothing to cross for Philadelphia here
- 57:06in the last half of the fourth inning. And at
- 57:08the end of four, the score stands Cleveland 3,
- 57:11the Athletics 2. Now for the stuff here in the
- 57:19top half of the fifth inning with Clark Easter
- 57:21and Dobie. Well, we've had a home run here this
- 57:25afternoon hit by Philadelphia's Sam Chapman,
- 57:27his seventh of the year. We said it boosted Philadelphia
- 57:30up to 41 home runs, and both clubs had started
- 57:32off the day at 40 even. Do you have a guess right
- 57:37now about how many home runs have been hit in
- 57:38the American and National Leagues right up to
- 57:40this minute? Well, we'll tell you. In the National
- 57:43League, 322 home runs have been felted. In the
- 57:46American League, including the one just hit by
- 57:48Sam Chapman a few moments ago, the American League
- 57:50has hit 307 home runs. So that's a total of 629
- 57:55home runs hit in Major League Baseball right
- 57:59up to date. That's gotten that potato pretty
- 58:01well, and I can understand very much now why
- 58:04Pittsburgh wants to move the fences back, and
- 58:06so do the Cincinnati Reds. This ball, just about
- 58:09as live as it can be, has been buzzed all over
- 58:11the parks. Up there now is Alec Clark, 0 for
- 58:142. Right -handed batsman swings on the first
- 58:17pitch and doesn't get it. That's strike one.
- 58:23That's another ball we haven't seen too much
- 58:25of either. Down comes the first pitch to him,
- 58:29next pitch to him, and it's outside for the first
- 58:32ball. Those counters, one and one. One ball,
- 58:35one strike. Alfred Aloysius Clark swings on this
- 58:42next pitch, and God gets it. One ball, two strikes
- 58:46on Alec Clark. Now, this boy Clark has played
- 58:49in a couple of World Series. He's played in,
- 58:52if you recall, the 1947 World Series in New York
- 58:55and 48 in Cleveland. That's the pitch to him
- 59:01is high, and outside the ball, too. His count
- 59:03is 2 -2. 1949, Clark was... To San Diego in the
- 59:09Pacific Coast League. He's been shifting back
- 59:14there. Down comes the next pitch for him. It's
- 59:16a drive down to third. Jones over to his left.
- 59:18Picks up nicely close to first base. Underclock
- 59:19is out. 5 -3 if you're scoring with us on that
- 59:25one. Went away in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 59:28Mr. Stanley Clark started off with Eastern. Of
- 59:30the Eastern Shore League in 1941. So he's put
- 59:34his ninth year in baseball. 1943, 44, and 45,
- 59:38he was on the newer roster, but he was in military
- 59:41service. Big Luke Easter comes wandering up there
- 59:45now. As he steps in, Chance immediately fires
- 59:48the first pitch past and past him. He didn't
- 59:51even get Easter a chance to settle down. He just
- 59:53reared back and heaved it in there for ball one.
- 59:56Easter jumped back as though somebody had shot
- 59:57him. Big fella looks at this pitch and crosses
- 1:00:00and it's in there for a strike. Nice curve, and
- 1:00:02Chance had it dancing in there just above the
- 1:00:04knees. Easter this afternoon has doubled on his
- 1:00:07only official at -bat. That was in the third
- 1:00:09inning, and he accidentally hit that one. Chance
- 1:00:13throws. Keeps it tight against Easter, who swings
- 1:00:15on it. And there's a high fly ball out into left
- 1:00:18center field. Coming in for it is Paul Lehner.
- 1:00:20And he's got it. That's all for Easter. Two outs
- 1:00:23here in the top of the fifth inning. That brings
- 1:00:25up Larry Doby. Doby was on at first base by forcing
- 1:00:29out Easter in the first inning. And then in the
- 1:00:32third, he was walked. So he's officially 0 for
- 1:00:341 here this afternoon. Started off batting today
- 1:00:36at .364 as the number four batsman in the American
- 1:00:39League. Jantz ready to face him now. Little left
- 1:00:45-hander has that left foot up on the rubber in
- 1:00:47a pigeon -toed fashion. Once, once, prize, pick,
- 1:00:50throws, a quickie in there for a strike. Nothing
- 1:00:55and one is the count on left -handed batsman
- 1:00:56Lai Adobe. Adobe stands just smack off the plate.
- 1:01:00He's very wide spread apart. Holds up that way
- 1:01:02back behind his left shoulder. Dan Frazier curve
- 1:01:05on him. It's flipped down to the right side.
- 1:01:06Not in the right key. It's a base hit. It was
- 1:01:08a grounder all the way. And Larry Doby's on at
- 1:01:10first base. So off chance. That's at number seven.
- 1:01:16And for Cleveland with Thuleway. Doby is now
- 1:01:18rushing at first base. He's sitting down there.
- 1:01:20Standing down there right now. Dropping a pair
- 1:01:22of spades. He was holding the inside corner against
- 1:01:24him. And Flip Rosen who was walked in second.
- 1:01:26Drilled a single to center. And batted in one
- 1:01:28run in the third inning. Coming up there. The
- 1:01:32flipper started off today hitting 274. That base
- 1:01:36hit will get him up to about 280. They're armed
- 1:01:42this afternoon. They pitch out. There's no throw
- 1:01:45to first as Dobie wasn't going. They have to
- 1:01:48watch Dobie quite a lot. He's stolen five bases
- 1:01:50this year. And he comes crawling off first base
- 1:01:53and he'll paint one way and paint the other.
- 1:01:55And the first thing you know, he's off and gone.
- 1:02:08Started off today hitting a .274. That base hit
- 1:02:11will get him up to about .280. They're on this
- 1:02:17afternoon. There's a pitch out. There's no throw
- 1:02:20to first as Dobie wasn't going. They have to
- 1:02:23watch Dobie quite a lot. He's stolen five bases
- 1:02:25this year. And he comes crawling off first base
- 1:02:28and he'll paint one way and paint the other.
- 1:02:30And then first thing you know, he's off and gone.
- 1:02:33Despite the fact the chance is left -hander,
- 1:02:34Dobie may try to steal. There's a throw to first.
- 1:02:37Dobie has to hurry back. He does. You ever see
- 1:02:42a guy crawl off first base like that, Al? No,
- 1:02:44I never have, Al. Go to the plate. Swung on.
- 1:02:47There's a bounding ball to third. Rowans is up
- 1:02:49with it. His wide throw is picked up very nicely
- 1:02:52by Ferris Fane. Out of the dirt. Time for the
- 1:02:54out. So Rosen bounces out from third to first.
- 1:02:58They're out number three here in the top half
- 1:02:59of the inning. So Cleveland has no runs here
- 1:03:01in this frame. On one hit. And they had one man
- 1:03:04left on. That was Larry Dobry stranded at first
- 1:03:06base. They've had five men left on now. At the
- 1:03:09end of four and one half innings, the score stands
- 1:03:12Cleveland three, the Philadelphia Athletics two.
- 1:03:18Now for the last half of inning number five,
- 1:03:20and the little fella himself is going to come
- 1:03:22up for Philadelphia. Not a chance. S -H -A -N
- 1:03:26-T -Z. And Art explained to me a little while
- 1:03:28ago the difference between Shands of Boston and
- 1:03:33Shands of Philadelphia. Shands of Boston spells
- 1:03:36his name S -C -H -A -N -Z, and it's pronounced
- 1:03:38as though there were a W in it. Charlie Shands,
- 1:03:41and this is Shands, S -C -H -A -N -T -Z. Bobby's
- 1:03:45coming up there now as a right -handed batter.
- 1:03:46He struck out back in the second inning for his
- 1:03:49first at -bat today. Started off today batting
- 1:03:52at 130. Now Bobby's in there, and Bob Lemon out
- 1:04:01on the mound is ready to face him. So a couple
- 1:04:04of Bobs going down there. A Bob to you, Bob.
- 1:04:11Oh, it's B Bob now, isn't it? That's right. Yep.
- 1:04:14Got to get up with things. There's a curveball
- 1:04:16thrown in there, too, Shantz. That's high for
- 1:04:18ball one. Shantz way up on that bat. Stands way
- 1:04:30forward at the plate, almost ahead of it. Swings
- 1:04:32at this pitch and fouls it off to the left. As
- 1:04:35I said before, he holds that bat so far up that
- 1:04:37he's got to hold it away from his body. And when
- 1:04:39he comes around on the swing, he's going to plunk
- 1:04:40himself in the short ribs just as sure as he
- 1:04:42is five feet, seven inches high. Seven throws.
- 1:04:48Chance after it again. Once more, he fouls it
- 1:04:50down the third baseline. So the count on Bobby
- 1:04:52is one ball, two strikes. Last half of the fifth
- 1:04:56inning. And the Philadelphia Athletics are one
- 1:04:58run behind. It's four stands three to two. Favorite
- 1:05:02Cleveland. On deck to go next is Dillinger. Lemon
- 1:05:11settles down. Throws. A side armor to fix up
- 1:05:14the outside corner for call strike three. Chances
- 1:05:16are it was in there too. He didn't even wait
- 1:05:19for the call by Art Passarelli. He just started
- 1:05:21to walk away. So that's strikeout number six
- 1:05:24for Bob Lemon. And that brings up Bob Dillinger,
- 1:05:27who struck out his last at -bat also. That was
- 1:05:29in the third. Grounded out, Flip Rosen in the
- 1:05:32first. So Dillinger this afternoon, leading off
- 1:05:36for the A's, is over two. Lemon tries a soft,
- 1:05:38easy curve that floats Sewell over for a strike.
- 1:05:41Nothing and one on Dillinger. Lemon over his
- 1:05:51head again, throws a fastball outside. Down is
- 1:05:54one and one. Bob Dillinger batting for the Athletics.
- 1:05:58One out, last half of the fifth, nobody on. Hands
- 1:06:01for 3 -2 in case you just tuned in with us. 3
- 1:06:03-2 Cleveland. Lemon working on the mound. Throws.
- 1:06:07Slow curve. Swung on a miss for a strike. 1 -2
- 1:06:10is the count on the Philadelphia third baseman.
- 1:06:18Lemon down after the rosin bag. There's that
- 1:06:20shirt tailor. He's really flopping out now. According
- 1:06:23to that article written in Taylor Spinks Sporting
- 1:06:26News, and it was a dandy. I'll tell you about
- 1:06:29that in a minute. There's a curveball thrown,
- 1:06:31and Dillinger fouls this one off. So the count
- 1:06:33rides along at one and two. According to that
- 1:06:36article in Sporting News, the harder Bob Lemon
- 1:06:40works, the more he should tell Flotsam. Well,
- 1:06:42he must be working this afternoon, right, because
- 1:06:44he's got enough material there to put a jib on
- 1:06:46a sailboat. Have you noticed that terrific stretch
- 1:06:49he takes with his hands over his head? I think
- 1:06:51that's what caused it. Oh, sure. He throws the
- 1:06:54current ball. It's slapped at. This time a foul
- 1:06:55ball is sent up behind first base going way up
- 1:06:58amongst the spectators. Well, somebody grabbed
- 1:06:59it. Yes, they did. Why, that ball just bounced
- 1:07:02around between the customers up there amongst
- 1:07:04them. Five or six hands grabbed it and it looked
- 1:07:07as though they were playing volleyball with it
- 1:07:08instead of trying to get it and put it in their
- 1:07:10pockets. Oh, me. There's no place like our ballpark
- 1:07:15any day. One ball, two strikes is a count on
- 1:07:17Dillinger. Lemons over his head again. Throws.
- 1:07:20There's a sidearm. It's hit back to third base.
- 1:07:23The pickup. The throw over by Rosen to Luke Easter
- 1:07:26in time. And that's all for Bob Dillinger. Counting
- 1:07:29out to his opposing third baseman. That brings
- 1:07:32up Wally Moses. We talk about a running guy this
- 1:07:35afternoon. Elder Lewally, as I call him, has
- 1:07:39been doing the running between first and second.
- 1:07:41He's been shuttling back and forth like a shuttle
- 1:07:43train between Grand Central Station in New York
- 1:07:45and 42nd Street. He's behind the move. Baldwin
- 1:07:48grins. Ben's sitting back at his own special
- 1:07:51desk here today. He uses that shuttle train all
- 1:07:53the time. He won't walk those four blocks. Then
- 1:07:55the delivery is, Wally Moses runs up on it and
- 1:07:57takes it. Cuss him. It's in there for strike.
- 1:08:00And Wally Moses actually runs up on a pitch.
- 1:08:02He stands deep in batter's box. And when the
- 1:08:04pitch is made, he takes a little chopping step.
- 1:08:06Up toward that pitch. He says it gives him more
- 1:08:09drive, and probably it does. Thelman throws again.
- 1:08:12Wally takes this one. It's outside. Down is one
- 1:08:16and one. Two outs. Last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:08:20Wally Moses up there. One hit and one official
- 1:08:22try. He was walked back in the first inning,
- 1:08:24single to center. In the second, he was worked
- 1:08:26around the score. Thelman throws to him low.
- 1:08:29That's ball two. Two and one. Now Moser stands
- 1:08:42there. Edmund takes a sign from Hagen. There's
- 1:08:45the mid -up as a target. Edmund with a swing
- 1:08:47-pumping motion delivers an easy curve way down
- 1:08:51on the inside. Oh, Wally just watched that one
- 1:08:53sail by for ball three. Three and one. Talking
- 1:08:58about old -timers. We got a letter from Arthur
- 1:09:01Miller out in Phoenix. He must be an old -timer
- 1:09:03in baseball or around baseball. There's a throw
- 1:09:05inside for ball four. So Wally Moser serves his
- 1:09:09stick away as he picks up his second walk. The
- 1:09:11afternoon, that's the fourth one given up by
- 1:09:13Lemon, and twice he's walked Walter Moses. But
- 1:09:17Al Miller signed his letter, Adios, amigos, from
- 1:09:24Phoenix, Arizona. Wish I had time to read the
- 1:09:26whole letter to you. It's a dilly. Got to read
- 1:09:30a little of it to you in a minute. He talks about
- 1:09:32Arizona, the land of sunshine. It is, too. I've
- 1:09:34been out there in Phoenix. That's quite a town.
- 1:09:36Now Lemon is ready to pitch to Paul Lehner. Left
- 1:09:39-handed touchdown. Hits one down to the right
- 1:09:40side. Coming up with a nice Lee Zabella. Throws
- 1:09:43it into first base. That's all for Lehner. He
- 1:09:45bounces out four to three. And in the last half
- 1:09:48of the fifth inning for the Athletics, no runs,
- 1:09:50no hits, no errors on the Indians. And there
- 1:09:54was one Athletic left on. They've now stranded
- 1:09:56four. At the end of five innings, the score,
- 1:09:59the Cleveland Indians three, the Philadelphia
- 1:10:01Athletics two. Well, we're ready for the business
- 1:10:05of the top half of the sixth inning. The man
- 1:10:06standing up there at the plate for Cleveland
- 1:10:07is Lou Boudreau, the manager himself. And Lou
- 1:10:11this afternoon has hit into one double play.
- 1:10:13That came in the third inning, and he hit back
- 1:10:15to the pitch in the second and was thrown out.
- 1:10:16So Lou's 0 for 2. He started out this afternoon
- 1:10:18hitting a .254. So he's dropped a few percentage
- 1:10:22points. First pitch made by Shantz to a right
- 1:10:26-handed batsman. Picks up the inside corner.
- 1:10:28Right at the knees for a called strike. Chance
- 1:10:35working right back. Close the change -up curve
- 1:10:37outside and high. Now the count is 1 -1 on Boudreaux.
- 1:10:42We said we wanted to tell you about this letter
- 1:10:44from Phoenix, Arizona. We're going to read a
- 1:10:46little bit out of it to you in just a second.
- 1:10:49Chance throws. Boudreaux takes. A curveball that
- 1:10:52hangs just above the letters for ball two. As
- 1:10:55we're reading further in that letter, we see
- 1:10:56that Mr. Miller is an old -time baseball man
- 1:10:59because he tells us that he was in the bleachers
- 1:11:01the day in 1906 when young Ty Cobb came up and
- 1:11:04broke in. How about that, huh? Fair ball thrown
- 1:11:06into the dirt to Lou Boudreau, and his count
- 1:11:08is 3 -1. Well, Mr. Miller starts off to say,
- 1:11:11gentlemen. He assumes that Mr. Gleason and I
- 1:11:14are gentlemen, for which we thank him very much.
- 1:11:17He says, needless to say, we here in the Valley
- 1:11:19of the Sun, out here in Arizona, where the frogs
- 1:11:20can't swim in the Jack Rabbit's Cary canteens.
- 1:11:23And the fish are humpbacked from trying to keep
- 1:11:25their heads and tails underwater at the same
- 1:11:26time. Out here where the rivers run upside down
- 1:11:30and where there's more cows and less milk, where
- 1:11:32you can see farther and see less, where there
- 1:11:34are fewer bathtubs but cleaner people than anywhere
- 1:11:37else in the United States, we like your game
- 1:11:39of the day. And we're glad of it. Boudreaux hits
- 1:11:43the next pitch. There's a down ball down to first
- 1:11:46base. Picked up a fair stay and he steps on first
- 1:11:47base. Boudreaux is out. Not run away in the top
- 1:11:52six, Denning. Here's Bob Avila. Bob Avila. One
- 1:12:01of the fans just a moment ago, with you here
- 1:12:04rocking the crowd, reached out of the stands,
- 1:12:08the lower railing, and asked for a ball, and
- 1:12:11one of the ballplayers threw a ball into the
- 1:12:13stands for him. Couldn't see who it was. Now
- 1:12:15Schatz is ready to go to work on Avila. Pitch
- 1:12:17comes in to the young fella. It's a fast one
- 1:12:20on the outside for that one. Chance takes his
- 1:12:29sign again for Mastroff. Avella steps away from
- 1:12:32the plate slightly, then steps into this pitch,
- 1:12:34doesn't offer, and it's through there for strike.
- 1:12:36One and one. By the way, Art, Mr. Miller wants
- 1:12:40us to come out and visit out in Arizona. He says
- 1:12:43you'll show us where there's humpback fishery.
- 1:12:45I probably couldn't even guess. Chance goes.
- 1:12:50Avila swings and doesn't get it. So Avila's count
- 1:12:54has gone to one and two now. Yes, sir. Like I
- 1:12:59recently told you, time and time again, every
- 1:13:01one of the letters that come in, we read them.
- 1:13:05We like to know what you say and what you think.
- 1:13:09That's the way we can visit back and forth, you
- 1:13:11know. That's it. In there for call strike three.
- 1:13:15And Avila is out. And Bobby Shanks ends up his
- 1:13:19first strikeout this afternoon. He's been quite
- 1:13:22effective when he's had to have it, but this
- 1:13:24is the first time that he's had to be that effective.
- 1:13:28That's a total in the game of seven strikeouts
- 1:13:30because Lemon has six of them. Two outs on the
- 1:13:34top of the sixth inning, and here's Jim Hagan.
- 1:13:36One hit and two drives. Swings it at this pitch
- 1:13:39and fouls one right down to Al Simmons coaching
- 1:13:41in the box at third base. Al Simmons, who made
- 1:13:46quite a name for himself right here at Chai Park
- 1:13:47in Philadelphia. Remember old foot -in -the -bucket
- 1:13:53stance? Used to like to watch him hit hard. He
- 1:13:56could hit. Yeah, he can really slam that apple.
- 1:13:59Chance delivers to the plate. A soft, easy curve
- 1:14:01that Higgins hits down to shortstop. Juiced up
- 1:14:03with it. There's the long throw across the diamond
- 1:14:04to Payne's waiting mitt. And that's all for Higgins.
- 1:14:07Down the out and short first. Throwing nothing
- 1:14:10across for the Philadelphia Athletics. Top half
- 1:14:11of the sixth inning. And at the end of five and
- 1:14:14a half, the score, Cleveland three, Philadelphia
- 1:14:16two. Well, now for the last half of the sixth
- 1:14:19inning with Chapman, Payne, and Juice. Well,
- 1:14:22everybody, you've probably noticed the absence
- 1:14:24of scores on this broadcast of other ballgames.
- 1:14:27Well, today there just aren't any other ballgames
- 1:14:30being played. There just aren't any ballgames
- 1:14:33being played in the Major League Series. And
- 1:14:35back to my hand, it takes first pitch in there
- 1:14:36for a strike. Lemon, I'm mindful of the fact
- 1:14:40that Chapman has wrecked him twice. Comes in
- 1:14:44with the next pitch. Misses just outside, and
- 1:14:46it's 1 -1. So, actually here this afternoon,
- 1:14:53I have a very good friend, Ben Baldwin. He isn't
- 1:14:55hopping around as much as usual, but he doesn't
- 1:14:58have any scores to compile for us. Now we're
- 1:15:03ready to go. It's over the plate to Chapman.
- 1:15:05There's a higher fast one that sort of takes
- 1:15:07off, saves away. That's ball two. 2 -1. Chapman
- 1:15:15waggling that bat back and forth. Bob Lemon taking
- 1:15:20his good old time out on the mound. He's in no
- 1:15:23hurry. Delivers. Chapman takes. Way outside.
- 1:15:27That's ball three, and the count is three and
- 1:15:29one. And Jim Hagen, the Cleveland catcher, walks
- 1:15:32out in front of the plate. He's going to snap
- 1:15:34that ball right back at Lemon as if to say, come
- 1:15:36on there, Reacher. It's funny, the... Nicknames.
- 1:15:45Ball players pick up along the way. Come and
- 1:15:48throw a three and one. In there for strike. Not
- 1:15:50three and two. But most of the time when you
- 1:15:54kid them about their nicknames, they'll kid you
- 1:15:56right back. Now the three and two count on Chapman.
- 1:16:03Picks it. Picks it. Swung on. Chapman drills
- 1:16:05one down. And right fielder. Picks it. Picks
- 1:16:07it. Picks it out into left field. It's going
- 1:16:09to be a single for Sam Chapman because Flip Rosen
- 1:16:12went down to pick that ball up. It hit something
- 1:16:14on the diamond. It bounced actually right over
- 1:16:16his shoulder and out of the left field. Bill
- 1:16:20Chapman opens in the sixth inning with a purple
- 1:16:24single out in the left. And then off, Lemon has
- 1:16:27hit number four. Coming up towards the plate
- 1:16:29now is Ferris Bain. Bain batting a candidate.
- 1:16:35He's 0 for 1 official time's up, and Lemon has
- 1:16:37the time run on behind him now at first base.
- 1:16:40Looks over there, throws to the plate, and Thames,
- 1:16:42going off to Bunk, takes it, and it's straight
- 1:16:44through there for a strike. Lemon's going back
- 1:16:47to this at the rising bag, so let's pause briefly.
- 1:16:59Now Lemon's all squared away down there, and
- 1:17:00he's ready to throw to Ferris Thames. Sam Chapman
- 1:17:04leads off at first base. Down comes the pitch.
- 1:17:07Under the knees. Count is one and one. And that
- 1:17:12pebble single, everybody, well, could be the
- 1:17:14turning point in this ball game. Of course, only
- 1:17:17the time it's coming up is going to hold the
- 1:17:19answer on that one. But we'll know in a few minutes.
- 1:17:23Sam Chapman got himself a pebble single. Ball
- 1:17:25hopping over the left shoulder of Flip Rosen
- 1:17:27at third base. And he's on the first. In case
- 1:17:30you're tuned in late with us, the score is Cleveland
- 1:17:313 and Philadelphia 2. And Philadelphia has a
- 1:17:34tying run on. There goes Chapman to pitch to
- 1:17:35the plate. He's taken away outside. The throw
- 1:17:37goes down. Good roll. Takes the ball. As the
- 1:17:41runner, Sam Chapman, tries to get back to first.
- 1:17:42Pass it over to Luke Easter. And the out has
- 1:17:44been affected anyway. So they cut in trying to
- 1:17:46steal. The pitch to the plate was outside for
- 1:17:50ball two. And Paris Payne out there at the plate
- 1:17:53didn't have a boost of a chance of swinging even
- 1:17:55to protect the runner. So they had it all figured
- 1:17:58out. What a big chance has gone to the boards
- 1:18:01now as Chapman is outsteering from the catcher,
- 1:18:03Hagan, to Luke Woodrow, and over to Luke Easter.
- 1:18:15The next pitch from the third to Kane is outside
- 1:18:16and low for ball three. And as Utgleason just
- 1:18:20now observed, there's a very good possibility
- 1:18:23that mixed up in there, a sign could have been
- 1:18:25missed. That's the reason that there wasn't a
- 1:18:28swing anyway. But he couldn't have breached it.
- 1:18:31The throw was way outside because Higgins had
- 1:18:33called for a pitch out. A fastball thrown in
- 1:18:36there on the inside for ball four. So Fain has
- 1:18:39walked. And had it not been for Chapman being
- 1:18:43cut down trying to steal, Philadelphia would
- 1:18:45have the potential trying run on second base
- 1:18:47like this minute. But instead, they now have
- 1:18:50the potential trying run in Fain on at first
- 1:18:52base and one out. Now here's Juice coming up.
- 1:18:55He's stepped out twice. That's not very much
- 1:19:00for Mr. Juice's liking. He'd like to get a holy
- 1:19:02one. He's hit seven home runs. And as far as
- 1:19:04RBI is concerned, he has 16. So he hasn't been
- 1:19:08as productive this year as he was last year up
- 1:19:11until this time. But Juice throws a threat at
- 1:19:14the plate, and we're going to pitch him as such,
- 1:19:16undoubtedly. Drummond tries a fastball. And it's
- 1:19:19a down shortstop. Boudreaux picks it up. Plays
- 1:19:21it back to Avila. Out at second base. There's
- 1:19:23no throw on the first. That put Houston on first
- 1:19:26base. Forcing out Payne at second. From manager
- 1:19:28Luke Boudreaux to shortstop. Over to Bob Avila
- 1:19:30to second baseman. And still the tying run is
- 1:19:33on for Philadelphia. And here is Billy Hitchcock.
- 1:19:36Who came off the bench here just two weeks ago
- 1:19:38today. And smashed the home run. To tie up a
- 1:19:43ball game. Finch at home run. Down in the Cleveland
- 1:19:47bullpen, Sam Zoldak, a left -hander, and Al Benton,
- 1:19:51a right -hander, both getting ready in case Bob
- 1:19:53Lemon falters any more here in the last half
- 1:19:55of the sixth inning. Billy Hitchcock batting
- 1:19:59right -handed. Lemon flows. Hitchcock swings.
- 1:20:02There's a long fly ball going out into left center
- 1:20:04field. Larry Goode is way over fast to his right.
- 1:20:06He's under it now. He's got it. Oh, the inning
- 1:20:09goes by the boards with the phone off the mathematics
- 1:20:11shutting, but not scoring. No runs, one hit.
- 1:20:14No no -ruthers. They had one man left on. So
- 1:20:17at the end of the sixth inning, the score remains
- 1:20:20Cleveland Indians 3, the Philadelphia Athletics
- 1:20:232. Well, let's see now. We're about to start
- 1:20:28the seventh inning. Let's see. Pop's got his
- 1:20:31teeth all glued back in. His toupee's cemented
- 1:20:35on. And let me hear those teeth crack together.
- 1:20:40That hurts. You've got to get a little closer.
- 1:20:42Attaboy. Are you ready? Say, Al, you were talking
- 1:20:45about Ben not being busy and catching those teeth
- 1:20:49clattering together. What do you say we send
- 1:20:51him down and get one of those nice, juicy, tasty
- 1:20:54hot dogs? You think we ought to have a hot dog?
- 1:20:57Sure, as long as he's down to get those hot dogs.
- 1:21:00How about some peanuts? Some peanuts, and I think
- 1:21:02I'll have one as long as Bob Lemon's picture.
- 1:21:04I think I'll have some lemon pop. Oh, that did
- 1:21:06it. That did it. Well, here we go, the top of
- 1:21:10the seventh. And speaking of Lemon, he's the
- 1:21:12first batter up. That's a left -handed. He throws
- 1:21:14right, you know. Takes the first pitch by Shands.
- 1:21:17Inside, it's ball one. Lemon, as Al told you,
- 1:21:22he's a good hitter for a pitcher because he's
- 1:21:24played the outfield in third base. He's had a
- 1:21:27lot of hitting experience. The next pitch to
- 1:21:28him, he takes high for ball two. And Bobby Shands,
- 1:21:35a little bit perturbed about the call on the
- 1:21:37last pitch. We're in a curveball, and he thought
- 1:21:40he caught that inside corner. Now he throws the
- 1:21:45rubber, looks down, gets his sign from Joe Astrov
- 1:21:47behind the plate for the Athletic. Winds, throws,
- 1:21:49and Lemon takes for all strike one. And Lemon
- 1:21:53was taking all the way. And then as that shams
- 1:21:57through that pitch, Lemon just stepped back in
- 1:21:59the batter's box and let it freeze over. So the
- 1:22:02count on him now is two balls, one strike. As
- 1:22:06they wind up, here's the next pitch. And Lemon
- 1:22:08takes a slow curve for call strike two. Two -two.
- 1:22:13Shams really pulled the string on that one. A
- 1:22:16slow, wide -sweeping curveball. This little fellow,
- 1:22:25he's got a lot of stuff. He's fast, throws you
- 1:22:28the fast curve, the slow curve. Then he'll throw
- 1:22:30you that change of pace. Here's the next one.
- 1:22:32Slow run and miss for strike three. And Lemon
- 1:22:36went after a sharp breaking curve, and he failed
- 1:22:39to connect. So there's one away here on the top
- 1:22:42of the seventh. And that is strikeout number
- 1:22:45two by Bobby Shams this afternoon. He struck
- 1:22:49out Bobby Avila in the sixth inning. So the top
- 1:22:55of the batting order, Bob Kennedy. He stands
- 1:22:58in. He's got one hit. Got a double in the third
- 1:23:01inning. One for three. Bats him right. Takes
- 1:23:04the first pitch. And it costs him. A curveball
- 1:23:08breaks right over, belt high. Kennedy uses somewhat
- 1:23:13of an open stance as he takes his position in
- 1:23:15the batter's box. He swings on the next ball
- 1:23:17pitch and there's a drive going up toward left
- 1:23:18field. And it is fouled. And you can probably
- 1:23:24hear the crowd come up in the background because
- 1:23:26that ball looked like it might be fair, it might
- 1:23:29be foul all the way. And it went into the lower
- 1:23:32deck of the stands out left field way, followed
- 1:23:34by about three feet. So it's just a long strike
- 1:23:38and very discouraged. Bob Kennedy comes fledging
- 1:23:43back to the plate. You know, down the left field
- 1:23:49line here at Shive Park, 334 feet, and down the
- 1:23:52right field line, 331. However, in left field,
- 1:23:55there's a double deck screecher. And out in right
- 1:23:58field, there's a fence about 35 feet high. So
- 1:24:01it's a little bit easier to poke that ball into
- 1:24:03the left field stands. However, you're hitting
- 1:24:05right into the teeth of the wind at the moment.
- 1:24:07Kennedy takes the next ball pitch, turn it high
- 1:24:09and outside for ball one. One and two. The wind
- 1:24:14is blowing in from the left field and going out
- 1:24:18over first base. Now Shands has his sign, winds.
- 1:24:22Here's the next pitch to Kennedy. A change of
- 1:24:24pace, but low for ball two. He pulled the string,
- 1:24:28the ball down below the knees. Dale Mitchell
- 1:24:32outfielders warming up down along the first baseline.
- 1:24:37And they're probably going to take Alec Clark's
- 1:24:39place should they use a right -hander. The next
- 1:24:42ball pitched, and Kennedy lashes it right into
- 1:24:44center field for a base hit. Chapman plays it
- 1:24:46on the first bounce, throws into Eddie Jews.
- 1:24:49And Kennedy is on with a single. And that was
- 1:24:53a line smash right over Shan's head, right over
- 1:24:55second base, into center field where Chapman
- 1:24:58played it on the first bounce. And that is hit
- 1:25:02number eight. Eight hits surrendered by Bobby
- 1:25:06Shands this afternoon. So here's Ali Clark. Takes
- 1:25:10the first pitch outside. A pitch out. But no
- 1:25:12throw down the first base. Well, Kennedy's got
- 1:25:17himself two for four so far. Clark has failed
- 1:25:20a hit in three trips. Four for three. First pitch
- 1:25:24to him is ball one way outside. A pitch out.
- 1:25:26Here's the next one. A curve hangs outside for
- 1:25:28ball two. And the count is 2 -0. Alec Clark,
- 1:25:35he's a well -put -together individual, very solidly
- 1:25:38built. Swings that bat clear from the end, and
- 1:25:41he's got a great pair of arms. Now he waits.
- 1:25:45Here it is. A strike call, a slow curve catches
- 1:25:48the outside, and the count is 2 -1. Clark bats
- 1:25:54him right -handed, and he stands rather well
- 1:25:56forward in the batter's box, as he's not too
- 1:25:58tall. Doesn't reach for that ball too much. And
- 1:26:02there's the throw over to first base, running
- 1:26:03Kennedy back. Out in center field, Sam Chapman
- 1:26:08is shaded slightly over toward left. He's playing
- 1:26:11in left center. The next pitch swung on and a
- 1:26:14high pop fly going out behind second base. Back
- 1:26:16goes Billy Hitchcock. In comes Wally Moses. And
- 1:26:18Moses falls for it. He takes it. So Ali Clark
- 1:26:21flies out to Wally Moses. In short, right center
- 1:26:25field, directly behind second base. And Bob Kennedy
- 1:26:28hustles back to first. So here in the top of
- 1:26:31the seventh with a 3 -2 ball game, the Cleveland
- 1:26:34Indians leading by the margin of just a single
- 1:26:36run. For the benefit of some of you fans who
- 1:26:39might have tuned in a little bit late, Cleveland
- 1:26:41picked up one run in the second, two in the third,
- 1:26:43and the Athletics came back with their only two
- 1:26:46runs in the third inning. The last three innings
- 1:26:49have been scoreless. So here's Big Luke Easter.
- 1:26:52He stands in with Kennedy on first, two men out.
- 1:26:55That's a left -handed. He has one hit in two
- 1:26:58official trips. He walked his first time up.
- 1:27:01There's a throw -over to Ferris Bain chasing
- 1:27:03Kennedy back. Bobby Shand, the left -hander,
- 1:27:06looking directly toward first. The first pitch,
- 1:27:08one on and missed for strike one. And the fans
- 1:27:12here at Shire Park get quite a kick out of Big
- 1:27:14Lukey when he swings on the pitch. Because he's
- 1:27:166 '4", weighs 240 pounds, he's big. And when
- 1:27:20he swings, he swings all over the place. They
- 1:27:24pitch him tight inside. Now Shands checks the
- 1:27:28runner. Takes the stretch, delivers, and there's
- 1:27:30a high -five foul ball coming over this way.
- 1:27:33We have to get up. And it is out. Dillinger.
- 1:27:42We couldn't see it was directly below us, and
- 1:27:45we had to wait to see the ads for the athletics
- 1:27:47to move off the playing field. Dillinger came
- 1:27:49over right next to the stands. Ashcroft was also
- 1:27:52after that foul, but Dillinger made the catch.
- 1:27:55So that's all for Luke Easter as he fouls out
- 1:27:57down along the stand, along the third baseline.
- 1:28:00And for the Cleveland Indians in the top half
- 1:28:02of the seventh inning, there are no runs on one
- 1:28:06hit and one man left on. And the score remains
- 1:28:09at the end of six and a half innings, the Cleveland
- 1:28:12Indians three, the Philadelphia Athletics two.
- 1:28:29And now as the fans here at Cheyette Park settle
- 1:28:32back into their seats, we have a change in the
- 1:28:34Cleveland lineup. Dale Mitchell has gone in the
- 1:28:37left field to replace Halle Park. And we might
- 1:28:41analyze a bit of Manager Lou Boudreau's strategy
- 1:28:43on that play. He probably thinks that Mitchell
- 1:28:46is a better outfielder. And he is playing defensive
- 1:28:48ball here in the late innings with a one -run
- 1:28:50lead. The first batter up is Joe Ostroth. He
- 1:28:53swings on Lennon's first pitch and he's going
- 1:28:54out in the center field for a base hit. And that
- 1:28:58was a humpback single. A short line drive that
- 1:29:02just sailed out in short right center field,
- 1:29:04coming in after the ball was jolting. Out in
- 1:29:07right field, Bob Kennedy tried to get to it,
- 1:29:10and Bobby Avila also tried to reach the ball,
- 1:29:12but there was no luck. So Bob Lemon, here in
- 1:29:18the last half of the seventh inning, surrendered
- 1:29:20his fifth hit, and that was what they call a
- 1:29:24humpback liner. A short fly ball into right center.
- 1:29:27So here's Bobby Shands, the pitcher. And Bobby
- 1:29:30runs the first ball, puts it through, and it's
- 1:29:31on the first baseline. And the play goes to first
- 1:29:34base. Easter feels the ball, throws over to Avila.
- 1:29:39No. A sacrifice works. Bobby Shands, run of the
- 1:29:44ball on the first baseline. Easter picked it
- 1:29:46up, so he had no chance. He gets Joe Astroff,
- 1:29:49who moved into second base. And then he threw
- 1:29:52the ball to Bobby Avila, who moved over to cover
- 1:29:54first. So Fred is Bobby Shands with a sacrifice,
- 1:29:57moving Joe Ashcroft to second base. And two pitchers
- 1:30:02go to work. In the Cleveland bullpen, Sam Zoldak
- 1:30:06and Al Dutton, a right and a left -hander. So
- 1:30:10the potential tying run is on at second base.
- 1:30:12The batter, Bob Dillinger. Last half of the seventh
- 1:30:15inning, a 3 -2 score. Ashcroft moves on second.
- 1:30:18The first pitch to Dillinger. He takes outside,
- 1:30:21ball one. Dillinger has 0 for 3. Twice he bounced
- 1:30:28out. The foot throws in the third. And once he
- 1:30:30struck out. There's the tying line out there
- 1:30:33on second base in this 3 -2 ball game. Dillinger
- 1:30:35bats right. Here's the next pitch. Swung on.
- 1:30:38A fly ball out to right field. But it is hurting
- 1:30:41foul. Bob Dillinger. Swung late on a fastball
- 1:30:49tossed up there by Bob Lemon. And the ball drops
- 1:30:52foul just inside the stand. Down beyond the Cleveland
- 1:30:56bullpen. It's about 10 feet from the foul line
- 1:31:01to the stand. And the management here at Shire
- 1:31:04Park have mattresses. Heavy fighting out there
- 1:31:09to keep the outfielders from running into that
- 1:31:11stand. The ball was fouled by about 10 feet.
- 1:31:14So the count on Dillinger, 1 -1. Lemon now checks
- 1:31:17Astroth as he moves off second. Here's the next
- 1:31:20pitch. Swung on and there's a ground ball. That
- 1:31:29was a close one. Bob Dillinger got far out in
- 1:31:32front. And he laced one, but it missed foul by
- 1:31:35just about six inches past third base. And both
- 1:31:39umpire Jim Boyer, who was calling the plays at
- 1:31:43third, and Art Passarella behind the plate, turned
- 1:31:45and motioned towards the third base stand, which
- 1:31:49signifies it's a foul ball. If they motion toward
- 1:31:52the infield, that is the signal for a fair ball.
- 1:31:55They motioned the opposite way, away from the
- 1:31:57field. That's a foul. So, Dillinger has had two
- 1:32:02postmen. I've got to hope we're all fouled up.
- 1:32:06That's the truth. I'm following you in the most
- 1:32:09confused way, buddy. That's a good description
- 1:32:14of it. That's exactly what it was. So, the ball
- 1:32:17is caught now, and Dillinger has moved to one
- 1:32:19ball and two strikes. Well, that shows he can
- 1:32:22hit a ball field, I'll say that. That's true.
- 1:32:25Now he waits for Lemon's next pitch. There goes
- 1:32:27Astroff, leading off second. There's the stretch,
- 1:32:30the pitch, and it's outside low for ball two.
- 1:32:35Lemon tried to get him to go after a slow -breaking
- 1:32:38curveball that's lifted outside. Now they play
- 1:32:41Dillinger straight away, Larry Doby straight
- 1:32:43away in center. Both right and left fielders,
- 1:32:46Dale Mitchell in left, Bob Kennedy in right in
- 1:32:49their normal positions, and Ian Field playing
- 1:32:51straight away. However, Rosen and Luke Easter
- 1:32:55both playing deep. Here's the next pitch. And
- 1:32:58it flew to Dillinger for ball three. A fastball
- 1:33:02down below the knees. Manager Lou Boudreau originally
- 1:33:09started Alec Clark in left field because Bobby
- 1:33:12Shands, the Philadelphia Athletic pitcher, is
- 1:33:14a little left -hander. But now in the late innings
- 1:33:16of the ballgame, with Lemon holding a one -run
- 1:33:17lead, a 3 -2 lead. Manager Lou Boudreau has sent
- 1:33:21Dale Mitchell out to play left and is playing
- 1:33:23defensive baseball. Now Lemon has his sign. Check
- 1:33:27the runner. Here's the next pitch. It's high
- 1:33:29and outside to Dillinger. Ball forward. So Bob
- 1:33:38Lemon surrenders his sixth face -on ball of the
- 1:33:41afternoon as Dillinger walks. And the Athletics
- 1:33:45now have two men on. Joe Ostroth, who represents
- 1:33:48the potential tying run, is on at second base.
- 1:33:51And Bob Dillinger, who represents the unlocking
- 1:33:55run in this ballgame, is on at first. And the
- 1:33:59batter is Wally Moges. Wally has one hit and
- 1:34:03two walks. in three times up. That's a left -handed.
- 1:34:07Takes the first pitch as slow as all one. And
- 1:34:09momentarily, Bob Lemon is having trouble getting
- 1:34:12that ball over the plate. The fans here at Stout
- 1:34:15Park start the rhythmic applause, calling for
- 1:34:18the Philadelphia Athletics to get back and tie
- 1:34:20up this ballgame. Now we're ready. Run away.
- 1:34:23Here's the next pitch. And moves it back away
- 1:34:26from the fastening side for ball three. Here's
- 1:34:29a picture of the top half of the seventh inning.
- 1:34:31Cleveland Indians out in front 3 -2. The Athletics
- 1:34:34batting with Joe Ashcroft on second. Bob Dillinger
- 1:34:37on first. Run away. And the count is dropped.
- 1:34:40Ball two. Here on Wally Moses. Manager Lou Boudreau
- 1:34:45calls in to Lemon to get that ball over. The
- 1:34:49right hander now bends forward to pick up his
- 1:34:51sign from Jimmy Hegan. Sets the runner off second
- 1:34:54base. Joe Ashcroft pitches. And it's a foul strike.
- 1:34:57A fastball poured right through there. And the
- 1:35:00count moves to 2 -1. Two balls, one strike. Moses
- 1:35:06backed away from that pitch. It was right over
- 1:35:08the inside corner. The infield, manager Lou Boudreau
- 1:35:14has moved slightly over towards second base to
- 1:35:16play for this left -handed batter, Wally Moses.
- 1:35:19Here's the next pitch. One on and there's a five
- 1:35:21-ball going deep out towards the right field.
- 1:35:22It's way back. The ball is up against the fence.
- 1:35:25Here comes Hustler, down in third base, coming
- 1:35:28in to score. The score comes into the plate,
- 1:35:30and he is third at the plate. Oh, there you have
- 1:35:45it. A tied -up ball game. Wally Moses. Well,
- 1:35:48with a long drive up right field way. Bob Kennedy
- 1:35:51went way back against the wall. He couldn't get
- 1:35:54to the ball. And the runners had to hold up to
- 1:35:56make sure that Kennedy was not going to make
- 1:35:58the catch. The ball was up off the fence. And
- 1:36:01Joe Astroff came around from second base to score.
- 1:36:04And the score is now 3 -3. Moving into second
- 1:36:07base is Wally Moses. And Bob Dillinger went over
- 1:36:09to third. So that is the ninth run. That's Johnny
- 1:36:13Moses has batted in this season. And I'll say
- 1:36:16this, that was an important one to be batted
- 1:36:18in because it tied up this ball game at 3 -3.
- 1:36:23Oh, the Athletics with one run in. Dillinger
- 1:36:25on third. Moses on second. Up to the plate now
- 1:36:29is Paul Lehner. They're going to walk him. First
- 1:36:32base is open. And manager Lou Boudreau has asked
- 1:36:35Bob Lemon to put him on. And the strategy behind
- 1:36:38the up play might be just this. With the bases
- 1:36:41loaded and only one man out, this Cleveland Indian
- 1:36:45infield has a chance to come up with that double
- 1:36:48play that will pull him out of the inning. So
- 1:36:55as Paul Rainer is purposely passed, that is the
- 1:36:58seventh block. Missed it by lemon this afternoon.
- 1:37:02Well, that loads them up. Dillinger is on third.
- 1:37:04Moses on second. Lehner on first. And the score
- 1:37:07is tied 3 -3. The batter now is Sam Chapman,
- 1:37:18and he's the guy that did all of the damage back
- 1:37:20in the third inning. He got himself a home run
- 1:37:22with Wally Moses on base. The bat in the first
- 1:37:25two Philadelphia runs. Big, tall, well -built,
- 1:37:29right -handed batter. Takes the first pitch.
- 1:37:31It's outside. Ball one. Chaplin's been having
- 1:37:36a field day. He's got two singles in the home
- 1:37:38run. He's got a single in the left field in the
- 1:37:39first inning. A home run to left field in the
- 1:37:41third. And a home run to left field in the sixth.
- 1:37:45He swings on the next ball pitch and he foul
- 1:37:47tips it. Right off catcher Jim Higgins' glove.
- 1:37:50So the count on Chaplin. One ball, one strike.
- 1:37:54He has three for three. And that undoubtedly
- 1:37:57will boost his .242 batting average. Bob Lemon
- 1:38:04now has his work cut out for him here. One run
- 1:38:06in, the bases filled. Only one man out here in
- 1:38:08the last half of the seventh. Now Lemon bends
- 1:38:11way forward, picks up his sign. Now he goes into
- 1:38:15his windup. Here's the next pitch to Chapman.
- 1:38:16It's high outside. Ball two. Down in the Cleveland
- 1:38:24bullpen, right -hander Al Benton and left -hander
- 1:38:27Sam Zoldak continue to warm up. Here's the next
- 1:38:31pitch to Chapman. It's nine outside for ball
- 1:38:33three. Jonathan is three and one. Wow, Jim Hegan
- 1:38:40moves up in front of the plate to say something
- 1:38:42to Bob Lemon, so let's pause briefly for station
- 1:38:44identification. This is the Mutual Broadcasting
- 1:38:47System. Here's the next pitch, and Chapman swings
- 1:39:01at the high foul ball, lifting down the third
- 1:39:03baseline. Moving over in foul territory is Flip
- 1:39:06Rosen. He has it. And Sam Chapman, with the bases
- 1:39:09loaded, sent a high, tall foul down the third
- 1:39:13baseline. Flip Rosen went way over toward the
- 1:39:16stand, and then the wind caught the ball and
- 1:39:18blew it out toward the baseline. But he caught
- 1:39:21the ball about four feet in foul territory, and
- 1:39:24there are two men out. So that leads it squarely
- 1:39:30up here to Ferris Fane, the left -handed batting
- 1:39:33first baseman of the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 1:39:36And Fane, in three times up, he's walked twice.
- 1:39:39And once he bounced out to Luke Easter at first
- 1:39:41base. So he is 0 for 1. Chokes up on the bat.
- 1:39:45Rocks back and forth. Standing squarely in the
- 1:39:48center of the batter's box. Dillinger on third.
- 1:39:52Moses on second. Maynard on first. And Fane takes
- 1:39:56the first ball pitch to him. It's outside. Ball
- 1:39:58one. One run in, three men on, and two men out.
- 1:40:06A very important part here right in the ballgame.
- 1:40:08A very important time as Ferris Fane comes up
- 1:40:10with the bases loaded. The windup by Bob Lemon.
- 1:40:13Here's the next pitch. Swung on and fouled off.
- 1:40:15And that ball fouled right up against the upper
- 1:40:18deck and bounced back onto the playing field.
- 1:40:21The foul now on Fane is one ball, one strike.
- 1:40:25Although Fane is a left -handed batter, Larry
- 1:40:28Doty plays him in left center. They're shaded
- 1:40:31just slightly over toward left field. In right
- 1:40:34field, Bob Kennedy is deep. The infield in their
- 1:40:38normal fielding position. The infield play Fane
- 1:40:42straight away. Lemon with a new ball. Rubs it
- 1:40:46up a bit. Dillinger moves off third. Moses off
- 1:40:49second. Now Paul Lehner gets off first. Face
- 1:40:55is still. Lemon can take his windup. Takes off
- 1:40:59the first sign. Takes the next one. Lines for
- 1:41:02the 1 -1 pick. Here it is. Swung on. It's a ground
- 1:41:05ball down the first baseline. Easter's up to
- 1:41:06the ball. Runs over. And he makes the play unassisted.
- 1:41:14So Thane bounces out. The big Luke Easter at
- 1:41:17first base unassisted. And that's all for the
- 1:41:19Philadelphia Athletics in the last half of the
- 1:41:21seventh inning. There was one run on two hits.
- 1:41:26And three men left on base for Philadelphia.
- 1:41:28And the score at the end of seven innings, the
- 1:41:31Cleveland Indians three, the Philadelphia Athletics
- 1:41:34three. And now for the business of the top half
- 1:41:41of the eighth inning. Well, that's twice the
- 1:41:43Philadelphia Athletics have left three men stranded
- 1:41:45on the base. They left three men on in the first
- 1:41:47inning and three men on in the last half of the
- 1:41:49seventh inning. I'm not going to leave you folks
- 1:41:52stranded out there for the top of the eighth
- 1:41:54because I'm going to call in my old sidekick,
- 1:41:56Brother Al, to come in and take over. All right,
- 1:41:58Art. Hey, you've really had some action here.
- 1:42:01No shutout innings for you today, buddy. First
- 1:42:05man up there in the top of the eighth inning,
- 1:42:06Larry Dolby. He has one hit and two official
- 1:42:08drives. Chance pitches him. The fastball on the
- 1:42:10left -hander is accurate. Misses it for a strike.
- 1:42:14Three and three, and at the end of seven innings,
- 1:42:16here are your totals. For the Cleveland Indians,
- 1:42:19three runs, eight hits, no errors. The A's, three
- 1:42:21runs, six hits, no errors. That's about a ballgame
- 1:42:24cooking here at Chi Park under the sun today.
- 1:42:26Chance delivers. Dobie takes. Baskin through
- 1:42:28there for a strike. Three and three. And at the
- 1:42:31end of seven innings, here are your totals. For
- 1:42:33the Cleveland Indians, three runs, eight hits,
- 1:42:35no errors. The A's, three runs, six hits, no
- 1:42:37errors. That's about a ballgame cooking here
- 1:42:40at Chi Park under the sun today. Chance delivers.
- 1:42:43Dobie takes. Baskin through there for a strike.
- 1:42:55Dobie with that right foot forward at the plate.
- 1:42:57Wide right eagle stance. Feet very wide apart.
- 1:43:00Chance delivers a side armor. It's a nice little
- 1:43:02hook that misses just outside. Count is one and
- 1:43:05two on Dobie. He'll be pitching Dobie very carefully
- 1:43:07because Dobie is right up there in the American
- 1:43:11League select circle of the leading five batsmen.
- 1:43:15Started off hitting a .364 today. Chance delivers.
- 1:43:19A little par has a fast one in there. Fouled
- 1:43:20back onto the screen by Dobie. Count stays right
- 1:43:23along. It's one and two. Three and three between
- 1:43:30Cleveland and Philadelphia. This is one of those
- 1:43:35ball games where you can jump either way. Chance
- 1:43:40throws. A curveball. Swung and a miss by Dudley.
- 1:43:42It's a strike three. And that was one of those
- 1:43:44slow, tantalizing curves. Joe Ashcroft was so
- 1:43:47happy about that one, he grabbed that ball and
- 1:43:50threw it all the way over Dillinger's head to
- 1:43:51turn base out in the left field. So Dudley's
- 1:43:54out of there on a strikeout. Went out to top
- 1:43:57of the eighth inning. And the third strikeout
- 1:44:00hung up in the book by Schatz this afternoon.
- 1:44:03Here is Skip Rosen, who has had one hit and two
- 1:44:05official tries. He was walked his first time
- 1:44:07up. That was in the second. He got a hit to center
- 1:44:10field in third. And in the fourth inning, he
- 1:44:12was thrown out by third baseman Bob Dillinger.
- 1:44:15Rosen bats right -handed and stands deep at the
- 1:44:17plate. Sort of a normal stance. He just let his
- 1:44:20threat apart. First pitch going is a curve. It's
- 1:44:23inside at the waist for ball one. That field
- 1:44:26shifted around the left and playing him very
- 1:44:27deep because Rosen's hit 14 home runs this year.
- 1:44:33Chance curbs him. Low inside. Out is 2 -0. Now
- 1:44:37goes Bobby back to the rousing bag. Joe Astroff
- 1:44:43has been playing a pretty good game there behind
- 1:44:44that plate for Philadelphia today. Chance working
- 1:44:48to him now. Rosen swings. There's a high fly
- 1:44:50ball hit into left center field. Sam Chapman
- 1:44:53gallops over under it. Waiting for it to come
- 1:44:55down now. He's got it. There's that number two.
- 1:44:59Two away here in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:45:01That brings up Lou Boudreau. And the MGR hasn't
- 1:45:04been able to hit one out of the infield today.
- 1:45:06With the exception of in the third inning. When
- 1:45:09he laced one out into right field to Wally Moses.
- 1:45:11And Wally made a very nice play out of it as
- 1:45:13he turned it into a DP. And a twin killing. About
- 1:45:17Larry Doby who was on at first base at that time.
- 1:45:19Very quick throwback. Boudreaux up there batting
- 1:45:24right -handed from the very severe crash. He
- 1:45:25bends way over at the waist. Looks as though
- 1:45:27he's about ready to sit down in the chair. Makes
- 1:45:28a curve in at the chins for ball one. Chance
- 1:45:37with that left foot forward up at the plate.
- 1:45:39Up at the rubber. Ready to fire this one to the
- 1:45:41plate. He does. Makes a curve ball. Swung on
- 1:45:44a miss. And Boudreaux spun all the way around
- 1:45:45when he didn't connect with it solidly. Almost
- 1:45:48fell down. He wound up on that one. Well, the
- 1:45:52count on Boudreaux is one and one. Must be pretty
- 1:45:55tough, Art, to carry all the managerial duties
- 1:45:57and to assume the duties of a player, too. That's
- 1:46:01a job in itself. Either one. Either one's a job.
- 1:46:04That's right, Art. Two. Shantz ready for his
- 1:46:07one and one. Boudreaux looks at the curve. It
- 1:46:08sails off outside. The ball, two. Two and one.
- 1:46:13Bobby Shantz has that curve of his working good
- 1:46:15in there today. Chance taking his time. Boudreaux
- 1:46:28bending over even more severely. Pitch to the
- 1:46:30plate. It is a slow curve. It is outside. Down
- 1:46:35to 3 -1 on Boudreaux with two outs. Top of the
- 1:46:38eighth inning and nobody on. The score all tied
- 1:46:40up between Cleveland and Philadelphia at 3 -3.
- 1:46:44This has been quite a ball game here this afternoon.
- 1:46:46Chapman wrapped in two runs for Philadelphia
- 1:46:48Moses 1. Chance wears back. Kicks this one loose.
- 1:46:54It's a curveball in there for a strike. Boudreaux
- 1:46:56tried to throw a stick away and go off to first
- 1:46:58base when he was suddenly held up by the right
- 1:47:00arm of Art Passarella. He said something to Art,
- 1:47:04and Art just looks at him disdainfully as if
- 1:47:06to say, Mr. Boudreaux, I'm calling him here today,
- 1:47:10I am. 3 -2 delivery. Chance kicks, throws. The
- 1:47:15fastball looks low for ball four. So Boudreaux
- 1:47:17gets his walk anyway. Both based on balls issued
- 1:47:21by Bob Chance. The batter coming up to the plate
- 1:47:25following his manager is Bob Avila. Bob got a
- 1:47:28single in the fourth inning, hit it to left field.
- 1:47:34There's one for three. Chance gets a new ball
- 1:47:36from Passarella. Park looks this one over and
- 1:47:39tosses it out to him. Puts that ball that Bobby
- 1:47:42Chance didn't want to work with right back in
- 1:47:43that same pocket. You get a kick out of listening
- 1:47:46to the umpires talk about the pitchers. They
- 1:47:47say, the pitcher will look at the ball and say,
- 1:47:49I don't want to throw this one. I say, all right.
- 1:47:51They'll take the ball and hide it behind their
- 1:47:53backs a moment and put it in the same pocket.
- 1:47:55And when the pitcher asks for a new ball, he
- 1:47:56gets out of the one right back. Now, what's the
- 1:47:59thing about psychology? Bob Avila, right -handed
- 1:48:02batsman. Chance curves him. It hangs high above
- 1:48:05the letters for a ball. Out is one and nothing.
- 1:48:08Two outs, one on here on the top of the eighth
- 1:48:09inning. So the potential tie -breaking run is
- 1:48:12on at first base in Boudreaux. With chance pitching
- 1:48:15to second baseman Bob Avila, Cleveland. There's
- 1:48:18a throw to first base. Boudreau hustles in ahead
- 1:48:21of it. Everything will be right down to the wire
- 1:48:26on this one. They'll be playing from the spikes
- 1:48:28up from now on because it's all tied up 3 -3
- 1:48:30and we're in the late inning. Chance throws.
- 1:48:33Fastball. Avila hits it down to third base. Joneser
- 1:48:35up with it. Plays it back to Billy Hitchcock
- 1:48:37at second. Four -four shot on Boudreau coming
- 1:48:39down. So Rakabilla puts the force out of his
- 1:48:43manager at second base. Joneser to Hitchcock.
- 1:48:47And the score locked up at 3 -3. The total's
- 1:48:50going into the last half of the eighth inning.
- 1:48:52The Indians three runs, eight hits, no errors.
- 1:48:53And the A's have three runs, six hits, and no
- 1:48:56errors. So it's all depending upon which way
- 1:49:00Jeff decides to jump here this afternoon. And
- 1:49:03whether Dane Fortune is going to smile on Bob
- 1:49:05Lemon, or whether she's going to turn right around
- 1:49:07and grin at Bobby Shantz. Up at the plate. First
- 1:49:12man is Jules. Touched one, down it comes. It's
- 1:49:17a fast one under his knees for ball one. Seven
- 1:49:21throws again. Juice takes. Right across there
- 1:49:23for a strike. Seven throws again. There's a curveball.
- 1:49:28It misses inside. Goal two. Two and one. Here's
- 1:49:34the goal of the next pitch. It's a clip of a
- 1:49:36toss. Misses outside. That is three and one now
- 1:49:39on Eddie Juice. Seven takes his sign. Throws.
- 1:49:43Curveball in for a strike. That is three and
- 1:49:46two. Now Lemon with his 3 -2 delivery. Rows back,
- 1:49:53throws it. It's swung on. There's a slow, bounding
- 1:49:56ball fouled on the third baseline. Now for the
- 1:49:59next 3 -2 delivery on Eddie Juice. He grinds
- 1:50:02his spikes in good and gets ready. He's the first
- 1:50:05batter up here in the last half of the eighth
- 1:50:06inning. 3 -2 delivery. It's the first ball. High
- 1:50:09for ball four. Now Lemon passes his eighth man.
- 1:50:16And that's the better tie -breaking run for the
- 1:50:18Athletics. Gone at first base in Eddie Juice.
- 1:50:30Miller -Hitchcock sending in. 1 -1, no better
- 1:50:34outlast of the eighth inning. Score tied at 3
- 1:50:36-3. Enfield comes charging in and Hitchcock squares
- 1:50:39away and pushes the bench. Down to third base,
- 1:50:42to Rosen. He plays over to second base. He gets
- 1:50:45used to playing on the first and time to get
- 1:50:46two. He's going to flip and sacrifice. He's turned
- 1:50:49into the double play. On the very alert fielding,
- 1:50:51a young fellow named Al Flip Rosen. He's been
- 1:50:54charging in to take that bounding ball. Al Flip
- 1:51:02Rosen comes up with our second double play this
- 1:51:04afternoon, the 51st of the year. Rosen. Avila.
- 1:51:10And over to first, to Doug Lucifer. Houston's
- 1:51:13got in the middle of that one. So the bases are
- 1:51:15clean now, and Ostroth is up there. And Lemon,
- 1:51:19feeling a lot better about the entire situation,
- 1:51:21rears back and throws the first one at Ostroth,
- 1:51:22and it's a low pass from Chins for goal one.
- 1:51:26Well, that's sure getting out of it. Lady Luck
- 1:51:28didn't only smile that time, she just laughed
- 1:51:30out loud for Bob Lemon. So to the plate is a
- 1:51:35mounting ball down to third base. Lows and handles
- 1:51:39that one. Gets it over to Eastwood and Hustler
- 1:51:41offers out. The Cardinals get the tough break
- 1:51:45here in the last half of the eighth inning. Nothing
- 1:51:46across for them. And at the end of eight full
- 1:51:49innings of play, the score still stands, Cleveland
- 1:51:51three. And from it out here, three. Well, now
- 1:51:57we're about to open the doors on the ninth inning
- 1:51:59here at Shaw Park and come it out here and start
- 1:52:01to do business with the same old Sam. Jim Higgins
- 1:52:04will be followed by Lemon and then will come
- 1:52:07Kennedy. Jim Hagen has one hit and two official
- 1:52:12times up. Make it three official times up. The
- 1:52:14attempt at the sacrifice in the fourth. And forced
- 1:52:17Aguilar at second base. So the lowest time at
- 1:52:20bat. And in the sixth inning, he was thrown out
- 1:52:23by the shortstop, Eddie Jules. So Bobby Shantz
- 1:52:27out on the mound for Philadelphia now. Time to
- 1:52:29pick up his sixth victory of the year. He's going
- 1:52:31to have to pitch to the last third of the last
- 1:52:34portion of the Philadelphia Cleveland batting
- 1:52:37order. And Hagan and Lemon, and then the leadoffer,
- 1:52:39Bob Kennedy. There are no other scores to begin
- 1:52:45with this afternoon. As baseball has a day off.
- 1:52:52So now Chance is getting ready to go. Running
- 1:52:55up there wearing a big number 10 on his back,
- 1:52:57Jim Hagan. Living in Massachusetts before, why
- 1:53:01was that good back and forth? Chance pitches.
- 1:53:05And the Puts Town Bambi has won a no for a fast
- 1:53:08skate. That's right. That's where Bobby Shantz
- 1:53:11hangs out. Puts Town, Pennsylvania. Goes again.
- 1:53:18There's a ball hit out into the center field.
- 1:53:19Sam Chapman way over to his left. Going fast,
- 1:53:21fast. He's got it. Sam really had to go after
- 1:53:24that one. Almost fell down as he leaped to make
- 1:53:27the catch. Sam Higgins out on the line drive
- 1:53:30center field. That's one away and a top of the
- 1:53:34ninth inning. That brings up Bob Lemon in this
- 1:53:36three -three ball game. Yes, sir. You don't want
- 1:53:39to laugh about that town in Pennsylvania called
- 1:53:41Touchtown. I've got some other funny ones there,
- 1:53:45too. I've got a place called Licksville. I can
- 1:53:50take the five or six out of him, but I'm not
- 1:53:51going to play you with him. Chance is ready now.
- 1:53:55Delivers to Bob Lemon. There's a fourth cut of
- 1:53:56that one. He fires it right back on the screen.
- 1:53:59Bob Lemon. Has one hit in three tries this afternoon.
- 1:54:03Started off hitting 263. And Barrett Blemming
- 1:54:07this year has gone for that long one. Got one
- 1:54:11home run. He hit it in April. Brings up Cole.
- 1:54:15Swung on a miss. Good strike. Lemon took a hitch
- 1:54:18in his swing and went back after it the second
- 1:54:20time. And the second helping didn't do him any
- 1:54:21good either. Nothing in two. It's a card on Lemon.
- 1:54:26Can't let him. Goes on through. Lemon swings.
- 1:54:29And there's a long drive into right field for
- 1:54:31base hit for Bob Lemon. He's on at first. Moses
- 1:54:34takes up, blows in to Eddie Juice, the shortstop,
- 1:54:36covering the second. So it went away. Lemon picks
- 1:54:38up his second hit on the bay. He took a hitch
- 1:54:41and he swung and went back after it the second
- 1:54:42time. And the second helping didn't do him any
- 1:54:44good either. Helping in two. The count on Lemon.
- 1:54:53Jump ready. Throws 0 -2. Lemon swings. And there's
- 1:54:56a long drive into right field for this hit for
- 1:54:58Bob Lemon. He's on at first. Moses picks up.
- 1:55:00Throws in to Eddie Drews, the shortstop, covering
- 1:55:02the second. Throws one away. Lemon picks up his
- 1:55:05second hit on the day. That's right. That's the
- 1:55:08number nine. Three runs, nine hits now for the
- 1:55:13Indians. They have three more than the homestanding
- 1:55:17Puppet Athletics. It's a small game. Coming up
- 1:55:21there now is Kennedy. And after Kennedy will
- 1:55:24be Darryl Mitchell for his first red card, in
- 1:55:26case he's needed. Throw it up into it, playing
- 1:55:30the normal double -play depth. Leading off at
- 1:55:34first base is Lemon. He won't be wandering away
- 1:55:36too far. Ferris Baines holding the inside corner.
- 1:55:38Puts the play this one on. There's a long drive.
- 1:55:39Takes it out on the left here for a base hit.
- 1:55:41There goes Lemon down to second. He holds on.
- 1:55:43Paul Lehner plays that ball in. He's already
- 1:55:45juiced the stretch. Stopped down in the third
- 1:55:47base sector. Without Kennedy. Moves at the crunching,
- 1:55:51a tie -breaking run down to second with a line
- 1:55:53drive pasted to left. They're hooked. Number
- 1:55:5510, that chance. Now let's see what's going to
- 1:56:01happen. Al Sharp gets up and slashes the throw
- 1:56:04and they throw it off the bullpen. Dale Mitchell
- 1:56:10coming up for his first outbound of the afternoon.
- 1:56:15Let's see what Mitchell's heading at. 3 .22 is
- 1:56:19his batting percentage. He has 21 RBI's. First
- 1:56:30pitch to him. A high fashion. That's our one.
- 1:56:40This one has a chance of batting in another run
- 1:56:42for his club here. This requires a hairy workup
- 1:56:45up to that plate. It's a left -handed. Stands
- 1:56:47deep. Next pitch is made to him. He swings under.
- 1:56:50There's a fly ball going in the center field.
- 1:56:52Sam Chapman gallops up to it. The race is under.
- 1:56:55Takes it. And the winner's left back in. Goes
- 1:56:58out number two. Barry Mitchell failed to connect
- 1:57:00strongly. And right now it's full group Easter.
- 1:57:05Well, I've got a motion to do that. I've got
- 1:57:07a motion to duck my head under the desk and you
- 1:57:09tell me what happens to Luke. Oh, this is a situation
- 1:57:13right now that Bobby Shantz would probably rather
- 1:57:15not have to face. As this Easter can follow that
- 1:57:18apple, he's a little bit old, and a few official
- 1:57:20times up. And every time he steps up there, you
- 1:57:24can just see power written all over his back.
- 1:57:26You've got to grab back to look at it. Look at
- 1:57:29the size of your shoulders on that duck, would
- 1:57:30you? That's the livers. The little fella has
- 1:57:33a curve in there for sure. The livers. The little
- 1:57:35fella has a curve in there for sure. The livers.
- 1:57:36The little fella has a curve in there for sure.
- 1:57:38The livers. A little more for sure. He's to look
- 1:57:42at it. That's the first time I've seen him take
- 1:57:44Easter on the outside. Chance picked up the outside
- 1:57:46corner at the knees on Luke. One is at first
- 1:57:49and second, Lemon at second, and Kennedy at first.
- 1:57:52Two outs, top of the ninth inning, and the score
- 1:57:54is down three and three. Chance, down, down,
- 1:57:57throws, used to take, outside. That's ball one.
- 1:58:01One ball, one strike. Well, there's a lot of
- 1:58:04pressure on young Chance's shoulders down there.
- 1:58:09His shoulders are rather narrow. He's a little
- 1:58:11fella. He looks like he'd have to stand up first
- 1:58:14to cast a shadow. Now it's set. Touches runner.
- 1:58:20Closed the plate. Eastwood pounds one back to
- 1:58:21second base. Mitch Kock has it. Closed it over
- 1:58:23to Forest Lane. Wings over. Goal for the Cleveland
- 1:58:49Indians in the top half of the ninth inning.
- 1:58:50No runs. They have two hits. No worries. Two
- 1:58:53men were left stranded on. At the end of eight
- 1:58:56and a half innings of play, the score stands
- 1:58:57three and three. Cleveland three and the Philadelphia
- 1:59:01Athletics three. Now for the last half of inning
- 1:59:10number nine. If this game is to be won in the
- 1:59:12regulation by innings, it's the last call to
- 1:59:14sum it up. Out on the mound, and he knows he's
- 1:59:18in a pitcher's duel. And a rough ball game. Bob
- 1:59:21Lemon. There's Bob Lemon. Pitched himself a no
- 1:59:25-hitter in 48. Pitched against Detroit. What
- 1:59:30a guy. One of the star guys out at the third
- 1:59:33baseman, just as old Bucky Walters did. Lines
- 1:59:36up as a pretty smart pitcher. That's him. Bob
- 1:59:42Lemon pitched against the Detroit Tigers. Won
- 1:59:442 -0 on June the 30th, 1948. He led the American
- 1:59:47League in most innings pitched. Most complete
- 1:59:49games, 20 and shutouts, 10 in 1948. So he was
- 1:59:52really a sizzler that year. Three years, two
- 1:59:54years later, tied up in the softball game. We'll
- 1:59:56bring it up here. And he pitches now to by the
- 1:59:58chance. And it's high for ball one. Chance leading
- 2:00:02off. And the last half of the ninth inning. Drummond
- 2:00:07throws again. Chance hits one down to third base.
- 2:00:09Flip Rosen's up with it on a big hop. Throws
- 2:00:10it across to Luke Easter. That's all for Buddy
- 2:00:12Chance. One out. Very nicely handled. Flip Rosen
- 2:00:16digging in there at third base. Taking at him.
- 2:00:20There is Bob Dillinger. Bob's had no runs out
- 2:00:23of him today. As a matter of fact, he hasn't
- 2:00:25ever got a base hit for three official times
- 2:00:26up. The last time was in seventh. He walked and
- 2:00:29moved around to third, but there he died. Adam
- 2:00:37is ready to work for you, Jones. Here he goes.
- 2:00:38Jones takes. Passing through for a strike. We
- 2:00:41were talking about Bob Shantz. Bob hasn't been
- 2:00:45around too long. He was born in 1925 in Puxtown,
- 2:00:48Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia here.
- 2:00:50There's Jones swinging on the next pitch and
- 2:00:52a fly ball foul up back to the first stake up
- 2:00:53in the second tier. This count is going through.
- 2:00:56Bobby Shantz started pitching for Lincoln in
- 2:00:58the Western League in 1948. He was with Philadelphia
- 2:01:00last year. He won six and lost eight. That's
- 2:01:03Bobby Shantz. He's a Pennsylvania Dutchman. He
- 2:01:07led the Western League in strikeouts in 48. Now
- 2:01:16Dylan Drew waiting. Wings on this next pitch
- 2:01:18and beats it into the ground. Powell. Someone
- 2:01:20had to clip him down there. Count is 0 -2. No
- 2:01:24balls, two strikes. Last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:01:28One out, nobody on. Philadelphia at bat. And
- 2:01:32the score is Cleveland 3 and Philadelphia 3.
- 2:01:34So it's all tied up just as tight as can be.
- 2:01:40The Indians have three runs and ten hits and
- 2:01:41drawing nine innings, and the A's have three
- 2:01:44and six. A fair ball thrown in there to a right
- 2:01:46-handed batsman. Don't want you to take it low
- 2:01:48for ball one. Drummond stuffing up a new ball
- 2:01:58as much as he's allowed to stuff it up. Can't
- 2:02:01use any foreign substance anymore. Just tell
- 2:02:03her that ball at all. Just take the sheen off
- 2:02:05it. Drummond tries a sidearm delivery. That misses
- 2:02:08outside. Ball two. Dillinger's got the count
- 2:02:11of two and two now. A lot of Moses hanging around
- 2:02:16to do the hitting next. Lemon takes his sign
- 2:02:21from Hagen. There's Passarella looking down over
- 2:02:23Hagen's shoulder. The pitch is low on that side.
- 2:02:25The ball got away from Hagen. That's a three
- 2:02:28and two count now on Dillinger. After Bob had
- 2:02:31gotten up there and gotten two quick counts against
- 2:02:33him, he has outlasted Bob Lemon. And has a count
- 2:02:38of three and two. But Bob goes back to the rising
- 2:02:41bag. Widgets around with the peak of his cap.
- 2:02:46Grips that ball in his right hand and steps up
- 2:02:49there. Starts his pumping motion. Here's the
- 2:02:503 -2 delivery. Outside for bar four. And the
- 2:02:53potential winning run has been walked to first
- 2:02:55base. Last place on bar is number nine. Living
- 2:03:03up by lemon. That's a lot of bases on ball. A
- 2:03:12lot of work out here this afternoon, Al. Nine
- 2:03:14walks, six strikeouts. Yes, sir. That's right.
- 2:03:17Wally Moses up at the plate now. He doubled his
- 2:03:19last time up. Has two hits and two official times
- 2:03:21up. Two hits and two walks for the four jerseys
- 2:03:24from up there. Looks at him. Delivers an easy
- 2:03:26curveball. It's outside. The ball runs. Simon
- 2:03:29wasn't giving him anything too good to hit at.
- 2:03:32As Wally has knocked in one of the Philadelphia
- 2:03:34runs here this afternoon. Dropped him with a
- 2:03:36home run. Belted in two. Well, Cleveland's pretty
- 2:03:41much split up on that three. One has been driven
- 2:03:45in by an individual. Has another fastball thrown
- 2:03:48in there. It's outside again for ball two. Not
- 2:03:50in Moses. It's two. And nothing. Regan batted
- 2:03:54in at Cleveland one. Rosen batted in one. And
- 2:03:56so did Luke Easton. That's more activity. Zoldak
- 2:04:02and Benton are throwing in the Cleveland bullpen
- 2:04:04again. Leading off the first base, Dillinger.
- 2:04:08One out. Down comes the pitch. A fastball. Hit
- 2:04:10down to Bobbiville. He plays it to Boudreaux.
- 2:04:12The one out. The throw in. He's not in time.
- 2:04:14What a Moses run at first base. Passing out Dillinger
- 2:04:17at second. So the running run is still on the
- 2:04:20sets for Philadelphia. Dillinger's forced. From
- 2:04:23Avila to Boudreaux covering the second. Here
- 2:04:28is the guy we call Little Sinai. Ball in there.
- 2:04:33He hasn't gotten a base hit today. As a matter
- 2:04:34of fact, he hasn't gotten one out of the infield.
- 2:04:36He's checked out, popped up, rounded out, and
- 2:04:39walked. He started off today hitting a .331.
- 2:04:43But he could be a hero here at Shire Park right
- 2:04:46now. And he's hit that long ball. He can do it.
- 2:04:51He's hit four of them. Four home runs. He hasn't
- 2:04:53hit one here in the month of June. He swings
- 2:04:55on the first pitch, and there's a bounding ball
- 2:04:56at second. The ball over to first base to Easter.
- 2:04:59It's going to be extra airing. And it rounds
- 2:05:02out. Four to three, second to first. No runs.
- 2:05:06No hits. One man left on for Philadelphia in
- 2:05:08the last half of the ninth inning. Well, it's
- 2:05:11all tied up for three and three. I'll be back
- 2:05:13in just 60 seconds with the top of the tenth.
- 2:05:17Well, it's the top of the tenth inning here,
- 2:05:19Chad. And of the six runs that have been scored
- 2:05:21in this ballgame, Art Greeson has told you about
- 2:05:23five of them. I've got a feeling he's going to
- 2:05:25tell us about more in the tenth. Come on, Art.
- 2:05:27How about you? All right, Al, at the top of the
- 2:05:2910th inning, and Larry Dobie up for the first
- 2:05:31man for the Cleveland Indians, Bobby Shands,
- 2:05:33into his lineup pitches. It's a call, strike
- 2:05:36one, as Dobie takes a fastball to the inside
- 2:05:38corner. Little Bobby now, ready for the next
- 2:05:41pitch, lines, throws. And Dobie tries to punt
- 2:05:45the ball, but he fouls it down the third baseline,
- 2:05:47and the foul is strike two. No balls, two strikes.
- 2:05:51Coaching at first base for the Cleveland Indians
- 2:05:53is Oscar Malillo. He was a great second baseman
- 2:05:57in the American League for years. Down to third
- 2:05:59base. But you remember the old Philadelphia outfielder?
- 2:06:02Al Simmons. And now he's an Indian. So Dobie's
- 2:06:07back in. He tried to bump that ball and broke
- 2:06:09for first base. Now he's back at the plate waiting
- 2:06:11for the next pitch. To wind up, here it is. And
- 2:06:14it's strike three. Oh! Joe Sands walks up, strikeout
- 2:06:24number four. Derby took a fastball right over
- 2:06:27the plate. And the next batter up will be Dick
- 2:06:31Rosen. He's got some right -handers. So far,
- 2:06:37so far, one hit in three official trips. He's
- 2:06:42got a single in the center field in the third
- 2:06:43inning. He walked his first time up and scored
- 2:06:46the first Cleveland run. Here's the first pitch
- 2:06:51to Rosen. And he holds back on a curve ball that
- 2:06:54breaks low for ball one. He had a notion. And
- 2:06:57he went right at the swing, and then he almost
- 2:06:59fell down as he held the end of his bat. Bobby
- 2:07:02Shands. Very small. Very cool. Wines, throws,
- 2:07:08and rolls. He flies one deep out toward left
- 2:07:10field. It's a long one. It's a long one. just
- 2:07:35stepped up to the plate and got a hold of a fastball
- 2:07:37and drove it deep into the upper deck in left
- 2:07:39field for his 15th home run of the season. And
- 2:07:43that breaks the tie. The Cleveland Indians go
- 2:07:45out ahead 4 -3. And now it's manager Lou Boudreau
- 2:07:49standing in. That's a right -hander. Here's the
- 2:07:51first pitch to Lou. He takes outside at the ball.
- 2:07:56Boudreau has failed a hit. He bounced off of
- 2:07:58the pitcher. Bounced into a double play. Bounced
- 2:08:00off the first base unassisted. And then he walks,
- 2:08:02so he has 0 for 3. Oh, what do you know? Al Rosen
- 2:08:06just stepped up to the 0 for 3. Shams now has
- 2:08:10his sign, winds to the next pitch, and Boudreaux
- 2:08:12fouls one off. It's strike one, 1 -1. A new ball
- 2:08:17put into play, and while Shams rubs it up a bit,
- 2:08:18let's pause briefly for station identification.
- 2:08:21This is the Mutual Broadcasting System. Now back
- 2:08:25at the shot clock, and Boudreau hits the next
- 2:08:27ball, 16. It's a line drive going up toward left
- 2:08:30field. Paul Lehner comes in. He can't make the
- 2:08:31play. The ball gets away from him, and it will
- 2:08:34be scored, I believe, as a double. Paul Lehner
- 2:08:37ran in, tried to tap. A line drive by Lou Boudreau
- 2:08:43in the left field. Couldn't get his glove on
- 2:08:46it, and the ball rolled about 10 feet away from
- 2:08:48him where Chapman came over. He landed the ball
- 2:08:51and threw in the second base. It's a double.
- 2:08:53For manager Lou Boudreau. And he's on at second
- 2:08:56base. So the Indians now have one run in. Boudreau
- 2:09:00on second base. One man out. And the batter is
- 2:09:04Bobby Avila. Now let's see. Bobby Avila has one
- 2:09:08hit and four times up. And he takes the first
- 2:09:11pitch in. It's outside for ball one. The Indians
- 2:09:16out in front four to three. Boudreau moves off
- 2:09:19second base. Bobby Shands. Picks up his sign
- 2:09:23now from Joe Ascoff. Doesn't like the first one.
- 2:09:27Takes the next one. Looks towards second. Throws.
- 2:09:30And it's high outside to Avila. Ball two. This
- 2:09:34Bobby Avila is a Mexican boy. And he's not too
- 2:09:40tall. He's not too big. He's 5 '10". Rather stalkily
- 2:09:45built. He weighs 165 pounds. That's him right
- 2:09:49-handed. Here's your 2 -0 pitch. And it's outside
- 2:09:54again for ball three. And here in the top half
- 2:09:57of the 10th inning, Bobby Shands, the left -hander
- 2:10:00for the Philadelphia Athletics, has run into
- 2:10:01a snag. Al Rosen got his 15th home run to put
- 2:10:06the Cleveland Indians out in front. Manager Lou
- 2:10:09Boudreau touched him for a double to left field,
- 2:10:11and he's on in second place. Chance now sets
- 2:10:17himself for the next pitch. He takes his stretch,
- 2:10:19delivers, and it's in there for a called strike
- 2:10:21one. Chance just bears back and then fires that
- 2:10:26fastball right across to Bobby Avila. Out on
- 2:10:31him. Eden's second baseman is three balls, one
- 2:10:34strike. Now already, Bluebell moves off. Here's
- 2:10:37the next pitch. Swung on, and there's a line
- 2:10:39fast going up toward right field. Back towards
- 2:10:40Wally Moses. He's up against the fence. He makes
- 2:10:42the catch. And Boudreaux tags up at second base,
- 2:10:45coming over to third, and he's in at third base.
- 2:10:50Well, little Bobby Avila showed us that he has
- 2:10:54quite a bit of power hitting that ball out toward
- 2:10:56right field. He hit a line drive, and Wally Moses
- 2:10:59had to go clear back almost to the light tower
- 2:11:01right up against the fence, but he pulled it
- 2:11:04in. And after the catch, Boudreaux tagged up
- 2:11:07and moved over to third base. So with one run
- 2:11:10in, Boudreaux on third. Two men out. The batter
- 2:11:14is Jim Hegan. And Hegan is one hit in four trips.
- 2:11:19Takes the first pitch. Outside. Ball one. Hegan's
- 2:11:23a big, tall, rangy guy. One of the better catchers
- 2:11:26in the American League. Stands well back in the
- 2:11:31batter's box. Feet spread apart. And he hits
- 2:11:33the next ball. Pitch to him. It's a drive going
- 2:11:34up toward left field. Back goes Carl Rainer.
- 2:11:36Back goes Rainer. And he can't get it. It's in
- 2:11:39there for a home run. just nearly reached out
- 2:12:02his bat and looked as though he slapped at that
- 2:12:04ball. But he has tremendous size and a lot of
- 2:12:07power. And he pulled that ball deep over Paul
- 2:12:09Lehner's head in left field into the stand at
- 2:12:12about the 360 foot mark. And it scored. Manager
- 2:12:16Lou Boudreau ahead of him. So the Indians take
- 2:12:18a three -run lead. The score is 6 -3. Here's
- 2:12:22Bob Lemon. Lemon bats left. Takes the first pitch.
- 2:12:26And it's wide at the break to a left -handed
- 2:12:28batter. Ball one. Well, Lemon has two hits and
- 2:12:32four times up. The next pitch to him, and he
- 2:12:36backs away from a fast one inside, and Bob had
- 2:12:39to hit the dirt. He didn't hit the dirt intentionally,
- 2:12:42but he lost his balance as he started to back
- 2:12:44up, and he fell down. The only count on Bob is
- 2:12:47two rolls, no strikes. Two home runs here in
- 2:12:51the top half of the tenth inning, one by Flip
- 2:12:54Rosen, one by Jim Hagan, and the Indians are
- 2:12:58out in front, three runs. Lemon hits the next
- 2:13:00ball, puts it to him, and sends a high foul ball
- 2:13:02down the first baseline. Bain moves over close
- 2:13:05to the stand. He can't get it. He says the ball
- 2:13:07bounces on top of the stand and then drops down
- 2:13:09into the lower deck. So Souvenir goes to some
- 2:13:13of the fans, and, well, we have a hibbler down
- 2:13:15there. One fella jumped right over the railing.
- 2:13:17He got it all right, too. Looked like a gazelle.
- 2:13:20He led her into that 1952 Olympics, huh? Well,
- 2:13:26there's Lemon now with a count. Two balls, one
- 2:13:29strike as the new ball is put into play. And
- 2:13:31he takes the next pitch by Shands. It's high
- 2:13:34for ball three. And Bobby Shands has run into
- 2:13:39that Cleveland power here in the top of the tenth.
- 2:13:41Two home runs. Here's the next pitch. And it
- 2:13:44hits Lemon right on the back of the neck, I think.
- 2:13:48It looks like he hit him just at the base of
- 2:13:50the neck. Don't hit him on the right shoulder.
- 2:13:52I can see him move his arm a little bit now.
- 2:13:54As he was falling away from that pitch. It was
- 2:13:56a fastball on the inside, and as Lemon was falling
- 2:14:00away, it was rather difficult for my position
- 2:14:02here, high up above the playing field, to distinguish
- 2:14:05whether that ball hit him on the back of the
- 2:14:07neck or on the right shoulder. But as Bob got
- 2:14:10up off the ground, he's all right, and the ball
- 2:14:12hit him on the right shoulder. The trainer ran
- 2:14:14out, and Bob says, OK, I'm all right. Dallas
- 2:14:18went down to first base, rubbing shoulder a bit.
- 2:14:21So Lemon is on, hit with a pitched ball. Well,
- 2:14:28Bob's got a lot of moxie. I knew it didn't hit
- 2:14:30him in the head because of the tip he's had.
- 2:14:32Oh, now look out. I thought I might have hit
- 2:14:35him right at the face of the net. The next pitch
- 2:14:37batter up is Bob Kennedy. The first pitch to
- 2:14:39him, he takes a slow curve. The drop's blown
- 2:14:42inside to a right -handed batter. So Kennedy
- 2:14:45has the count. All one. Lemon on first. Three
- 2:14:49runs in, two men out. Here's the next pitch.
- 2:14:52Swung on. It's a fly ball. Out toward right center
- 2:14:54field. Moses is after it. Chapman comes over.
- 2:14:57Moses makes the catch. And that's all. Bob Kennedy
- 2:14:59flying out to right center field to Wally Moses.
- 2:15:02And the Cleveland Indians in the top half of
- 2:15:04the tenth inning make up three runs on three
- 2:15:08hits. And there was one man left on base. And
- 2:15:11so the score at the end of nine and a half innings,
- 2:15:13the Cleveland Indians six and the Philadelphia
- 2:15:16Athletics three. And now back at Chai Park in
- 2:15:21Philadelphia. The last half of the tenth inning,
- 2:15:24the last call for the Philadelphia Athletics
- 2:15:26to get three runs and tie up this ballgame. Will
- 2:15:29they do it? Well, we don't know. Time will only
- 2:15:33tell. But the way these boys have been dubbing
- 2:15:37that ball around in the American League, anything
- 2:15:39can happen in the ballgame, you know. So to start
- 2:15:42things off for the Philadelphia Athletics here
- 2:15:44in the last tenth inning will be the guy that
- 2:15:47holds down that center field position. The guy
- 2:15:51that already has three hits in this ballgame,
- 2:15:53one which is a home run, is Sam Chapman. Chapman
- 2:15:58got a single to the left in the first inning,
- 2:16:00a home run. Went close to zone base in the second
- 2:16:03or in the third inning. And then he got a single
- 2:16:06to left field in the sixth inning. His last time
- 2:16:11at bat, well, he popped it up to Flip Rosen.
- 2:16:15And Rosen has been a busy guy this afternoon.
- 2:16:17He's handled eight chances down there at third
- 2:16:19base. And he has six assists and two put -ups.
- 2:16:24No errors. He's had quite a day for himself.
- 2:16:28He's got a home run to unlock this 3 -3 tie and
- 2:16:31put the Indians out in front. Here's Chapman
- 2:16:35now to face the offerings of Bob Lemon as we
- 2:16:37move into the last half of the 10th inning with
- 2:16:40the Athletics in dire need of three big runs.
- 2:16:45The wind -up by Lemon, the first pitch to Chapman.
- 2:16:47He takes it in there for a false strike one.
- 2:16:50Lemon sighed on him with a fastball, and the
- 2:16:52ball was right through there. Lemon has his sign
- 2:16:57off on Jim Hagan. Here's the next pick. Swung
- 2:16:59on. It's a ground ball on the third baseline.
- 2:17:01Up with the ball is Rosen. The throw to first.
- 2:17:03It's in time as Easter stretches way out to his
- 2:17:05right. Well, we saw a couple of great plays there.
- 2:17:14Rosen moved to his left, scooped that ball up,
- 2:17:16and then threw to first base. And big Luke Easter
- 2:17:18stretched his sixth. Foot four. Tight. Way out
- 2:17:22to the right. And scooped that ball out of the
- 2:17:24dirt. So, Chapman is out. That was a hard hit
- 2:17:27ball. Here's Ferris Fane. That's a left -handed.
- 2:17:33Hits the first ball. Puts it in and punches the
- 2:17:34ground ball. Right between Boudreaux and Rosen
- 2:17:37in the left field. It's a single. As Fane holds
- 2:17:40on at first base. Dan Mitchell, Fane in left
- 2:17:43field for the Indians, steals that ball. And
- 2:17:45threw it in to Bobby Avila. So off Bob Lemon,
- 2:17:50that is hit number seven. With Fain on first,
- 2:17:56run out, the batter is Eddie Deuce, the shortstop.
- 2:18:02Deuce is struck out twice. Fain on first as he
- 2:18:07forced the man, and then walked. So he is 0 -3,
- 2:18:10and he fouls off the first ball pitch to him.
- 2:18:12It's strike one. Bob Lemon now with a new ball.
- 2:18:17And he's going to have to pitch very carefully
- 2:18:19here to Yost because he can put that ball up
- 2:18:22in those left field seats. He's strong. Lemon
- 2:18:27glances over his left shoulder. The next pitch
- 2:18:31is outside to Noah. Curveball catches the outside
- 2:18:35for false strike two. And Yost is turning around
- 2:18:38and giving umpire Casarela a very destructive
- 2:18:42look. There is Fain down on first base. One out.
- 2:18:49And Passarella nearly told Jost that he'd do
- 2:18:53the umpiring and get up there and do the hitting.
- 2:18:57So the right -handed batsman back in again. Count
- 2:19:01on him. No balls. Two strikes. Lemon ready. Takes
- 2:19:06his stretch. Delivers. And a curve break. Low
- 2:19:07outside. Ball one. Two pitchers working very
- 2:19:12rapidly in the Cleveland bullpen. Big Al Benton,
- 2:19:16number 22, he's a right -hander. And little Sam
- 2:19:19Zoldak, left -hander. Now Lemon is ready. Pumps,
- 2:19:22throws, and Juice takes a sidearm curve outside
- 2:19:26the ball, too. And Lemon sidearms these hitters
- 2:19:29once in a while. He'll stride way over towards
- 2:19:31third base and then come around to that sidearm
- 2:19:34kick. Very difficult kick to hit. The count on
- 2:19:39Juice now, two balls, two strikes. They're playing
- 2:19:45juice to pull that ball. They'll be playing in
- 2:19:47left center. Here's the next pitch. High and
- 2:19:49outside. Ball three. So, it's a three and two
- 2:19:53count on the Philadelphia shortstop. Last half
- 2:19:56of the tenth inning and the A's trailing by six
- 2:19:58to three score. So, we'll watch Thayne very closely
- 2:20:01over on Thursday to see whether or not he might
- 2:20:03be moving. Lemon is ready. Here's the next pitch.
- 2:20:07Swung on and far back. Thayne was not going.
- 2:20:11Bain does not represent the tying run, and he
- 2:20:13was playing it safe at first. Eddie Juice fouled
- 2:20:17off a fastball on the count of 3 -2. And here
- 2:20:24in the last half of the 10th inning, it will
- 2:20:25be up to Eddie Juice to either hit his way on
- 2:20:28or walk his way on. He's got to get on that bag
- 2:20:32because the Athletics need three runs. Bain now
- 2:20:36takes just a short leadoff first. You can see
- 2:20:40two pitch. Swung on and the drive is up to left
- 2:20:42field. Back goes Dale Mitchell. He can't get
- 2:20:44it. The ball is up against the fence. And it
- 2:20:46is a single as Bain holds up at second base.
- 2:20:51Eddie Juice reached out there and slapped a line
- 2:20:53drive that sailed right over Mitchell's head
- 2:20:55up against the fence. Bain could not tell whether
- 2:20:58or not the ball was going to be dropped. He had
- 2:20:59to hold up. And Mitchell fired that ball nicely
- 2:21:03off the fence and whipped it in to Flip Rosen.
- 2:21:05And told the Athletics here, fighting back in
- 2:21:08the last half of the 10th inning, have two men
- 2:21:10on. Bain on second, Schultz on first. The batter
- 2:21:14coming up here. I think we're going to have a
- 2:21:18pinch hitter. Billy Hitchcock is due to hit,
- 2:21:20and I think we're going to have a pinch hitter.
- 2:21:24Barney McCoskey. Barney McCoskey, a left -handed
- 2:21:29batter, is coming in to replace right -handed
- 2:21:31batting Billy Hitchcock. So Bob Lemon has given
- 2:21:39up two hits here in the last half of the tenth
- 2:21:41inning. His seventh and eighth kick in the game.
- 2:21:45And now he's got to set himself here and pitch
- 2:21:48to a pinch hitter. Barney McCoskey has come on
- 2:21:52to replay Hitchcock. And he's batting for an
- 2:21:56average of 269. He has four runs batted in, five
- 2:22:00doubles. Remember Barney, he was out all of last
- 2:22:03year. Had a bad sack. He takes the first pitch.
- 2:22:07A tall strike. And Lemon finds a fastball right
- 2:22:10across. Lemon now placing very carefully. Barty
- 2:22:14McCloskey batting left -handed. Lemon puts up
- 2:22:21his sign. The runners move off. Here's the next
- 2:22:23pitch. And it is ball one inside. And now, it's
- 2:22:29the opposite side who is questioning the call
- 2:22:31of umpire Art Passarella. Bob Lemon looks down.
- 2:22:35And he doesn't agree. But the count stands. One
- 2:22:37ball, one strike. Two men on, one out. Last half
- 2:22:42of the 10th. Here's the next pitch. McCluskey
- 2:22:44swings and bounces one foul off the plate for
- 2:22:46strike two. And within it, that Barney McCluskey
- 2:22:52swing on that pitch. Ferris Bane goes for third.
- 2:22:55And Eddie Goose has started for second. Now they
- 2:22:57have to go back. So a new ball into play. Bob
- 2:23:04Lemon rubs it up a fifth. The final score was
- 2:23:11the Cleveland Indians 6 and the Philadelphia
- 2:23:15Athletics 3 in 10 innings.
