- 0:00Welcome to the one Small change. I am thrilled that you are here
- 0:04again to embark on this journey of exploration,
- 0:07exploration and transformation. And
- 0:11I am your host, who apparently has rubber lips today,
- 0:15Yvonne McCoy. And I bring with me almost 30 years of
- 0:18entrepreneurial experience. But I have a huge passion
- 0:22for discovering growth through seemingly small changes.
- 0:26And so I am glad that you've come today to see what you can get.
- 0:30And I try to invite interesting people who can share things
- 0:34that you can put to work right away. And today my
- 0:37guest is the amazing Janelle Anderson. And
- 0:41she's going to share with us how some smaller, unexpected
- 0:45decisions sparked a remarkable change and growth in either
- 0:49her personal and or professional life.
- 0:53Janelle, thank you for being here. Thank you
- 0:56for having me, Yvonne. I'm excited to be here. So we've been
- 1:00in each other's world for a while and we were just talking
- 1:04before the thing that when we met before, we probably weren't doing
- 1:08kind of the same thing. And so it is really good to circle
- 1:11back and connect with you again. So I want you to tell
- 1:15everybody what it is you do and what made
- 1:19you shift into doing that and how it's growing your business.
- 1:22Yeah, sure. I. What I do now is I help coaches, early stage
- 1:26coaches, to build a thriving practice, a thriving
- 1:30business, by first of all, creating what I call the client
- 1:34enrollment workshop system. So it's a workshop
- 1:37that's. That's designed
- 1:41to enroll clients, right? It's designed to make them money every single month. It's
- 1:44a system so you can run the workshop every month. You're not
- 1:48recreating it. It's a refined, tested,
- 1:51dialed in workshop that works. And then it becomes a system because
- 1:55you're just putting it out there every month. And then that builds their
- 1:59clientele, it builds their list, it starts bringing them
- 2:02leads, it gives them visibility. And then from there, we
- 2:06build all the business structure around that so they have
- 2:10everything they need to thrive as a coach. And
- 2:13I didn't land here right away. I've been a coach for
- 2:1711 years. And before that I was an entrepreneur and a business owner with
- 2:21my husband. And. And way before that I was a teacher
- 2:25and a school teacher. So when I started coaching
- 2:29my, it was midlife, you know, and all the things that
- 2:33go with that. So I started working with women going through midlife
- 2:36and through a series of just evolutions and changes through the
- 2:40years. I landed here working with coaches around workshop,
- 2:44and I always did
- 2:48workshops. I think that's one of the reasons why I'm doing what I'm Doing now
- 2:52because even when I first started my business, I was doing workshops
- 2:56in the local library because I figured, why not? You know, I could get a
- 2:59group of people in front of me. And with my teaching background, it was really
- 3:03easy for me to put together content and teach and have them interact
- 3:07with me and, you know, give them work to do. And
- 3:11they loved it, you know, so I was really good at that, naturally, just from
- 3:15my teaching experience. But I didn't think about
- 3:19teaching people how to do workshops until just probably a couple years
- 3:23ago. About three years ago, I guess my mentor said you
- 3:26should be teaching people to do virtual events because I had been working
- 3:30with him on his team and I was doing a lot of three day events
- 3:34and of course continuing doing my workshops. And I was really learning and
- 3:37refining and learning how to make them,
- 3:41how to monetize your workshop and not just teach
- 3:45great content, which is what I was doing before.
- 3:49So that's how I landed here. And when he first told me that, I thought,
- 3:52really? I never thought about that before. But then it made total sense because it
- 3:56was my core strategy all along,
- 4:02because I use that strategy as well of doing a monthly
- 4:05workshop. There are so many things that you said that it would
- 4:09be easy for people to miss. Okay. So
- 4:13I'm just going to throw out a couple of things that you said that I
- 4:16think is really important. The first thing you said
- 4:20kind of is you evolved. And I think that's what keeps people
- 4:24from doing stuff right away is they're like, I'm not ready. Right. The
- 4:28second thing that you said that I think is so important is by
- 4:32doing workshops consistently, you're.
- 4:36That's what most people are missing in their business, the consistency.
- 4:40Yeah. So people know where to find you on a regular basis.
- 4:44The other thing. And it brings you. It makes your income more
- 4:47consistent too. The other thing that you said,
- 4:51if I can remember it, we're talking about consistently.
- 4:55Oh, is that a workshop leverages
- 4:59your work, so you get to talk to several people at a time
- 5:03versus just one on one on one. You know, it leverages your time.
- 5:07So that's so important. So do you want to talk about
- 5:13one of my favorite topics, which is the fact that people are like, I'm
- 5:16doing the same workshop every month.
- 5:22Why people are afraid of that. That comes up all the time.
- 5:26Yeah. Yes, yes, I get that question all the time. Won't people get
- 5:29tired of it? Won't people get bored? Won't they? But the
- 5:33reality is that you're always reaching new people, number one.
- 5:37If you're doing this correctly, you're always putting it in front of new people, which
- 5:40is expanding your reach, expanding your audience, and new
- 5:44people are coming all the time. The other thing that kind of
- 5:47surprised me, actually, when I started really dialing in just one workshop,
- 5:51is that I have people, I have repeat attendees that come
- 5:55every time, and they love it. And they always tell me that they get something
- 5:59new out of it, because the first time they were wherever they were
- 6:02in their journey and. And got something. And then the next time they come,
- 6:06they've grown and they're at a different place and they hear something that they didn't
- 6:09hear the first time. And maybe they started implementing part
- 6:13of it, but not all of it. And then they come back and they get
- 6:16more. So it's really not. You're.
- 6:19You don't have to worry about that. And every time that you
- 6:23deliver it, you're probably going to tweak it a little bit anyway
- 6:26and deliver it in a different way. I mean, it's always the same content for
- 6:30me, but I. I might highlight something more than I did last time or
- 6:34whatever, and your audience is just getting more
- 6:38and more out of it. And the other thing I said, the third
- 6:41thing is that if you have repeat attendees, maybe they weren't ready
- 6:45when they first came to jump into your offer, and now they are.
- 6:49Now they're at a place where they realize, well, I actually need help doing this
- 6:52thing, and I tried to do it on my own, but I actually need help,
- 6:56so I'm ready now to say yes to your offer. I think
- 7:00the thing, if I use myself as an example,
- 7:03I was like, what do you mean I'm going to do? You know, I think
- 7:06the entrepreneurial brain is kind of the squirrel brain, you know, I can do this,
- 7:09I can do this. I can, you know, and so, you know, when the
- 7:13idea was like, do the same workshop, I was like, oh, my God, this is
- 7:16going to be the most boring thing ever. You know, I'm going to be bored.
- 7:19So these people are going to be bored, right? And so
- 7:23from my side of the equation, what I found
- 7:27was that the skeleton of the workshop
- 7:30is the same. But what changes every single time,
- 7:34first of all, the people who are there. So the energy in the room and
- 7:38the questions are different and the interaction and all that kind
- 7:42of stuff is different. But instead of, like,
- 7:45spreading yourself thin, like, wide, you get
- 7:49much deeper into your subject matter. I mean, your
- 7:52perspective about it. And, you know, and to me,
- 7:56it's. It's. Things need to be relevant and so after each
- 8:00workshop, I always look at it and go, where didn't I
- 8:03not quite nail it? Why didn't I? You know, and so you kind of.
- 8:07You tinker with it enough to make it,
- 8:11you know, feel good. But you're right, people come. I have
- 8:14people who come over and over and over to my workshop. And
- 8:18I think one of the things that you didn't mention
- 8:22is that by doing it on a regular basis, it's
- 8:26easier for people to find you. It creates momentum. And those people that
- 8:30come more than once tend to bring people with them. Yes.
- 8:34You know, yeah, it all works to expand
- 8:38that reach and that visibility and your authority and your credibility.
- 8:42And the consistency of showing up every month,
- 8:45you know, that's the other thing, like you're mentioning, like this consistency. It shows
- 8:49up, let's say, on LinkedIn or something, and then it comes back again the next
- 8:52month, and maybe somebody seen it several times. They're like, huh, I keep seeing this
- 8:56workshop. I should go check it out. You know, it's that consistency of always
- 8:59showing up in people's feeds and
- 9:03the. The ability for them to just come and get
- 9:07to know you, you know, that's. The other piece is I love what you were
- 9:10saying about the audience change. It changes it because of who's in the room
- 9:14and what questions they're asking, what aha's are having. And that's a key
- 9:17piece that I teach about workshops, is that
- 9:21it's not just about you giving information. It's about the
- 9:24interaction with the people. It's about letting them kind of shape your
- 9:28event with what they're bringing and what they're asking
- 9:32and what the. What they're coming up with. If you give them a little
- 9:35exercise to do or you do a coaching spot or
- 9:39something. And I always tell my attendees, like, you help shape this
- 9:42and make it unique. Everyone is unique because you guys are in the room, you
- 9:46know, and that's, to me, like, one of the best parts of running
- 9:50workshops is that people. I get to know and see where they're coming from
- 9:53and what are they working on and what is their passion. And as they are
- 9:57interacting and taking part in the whole
- 10:00event, it's just I learn from
- 10:04them, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of that interaction and that
- 10:08connection with them. And then I think they walk away feeling
- 10:12really valued and seen and heard. So I
- 10:16think. And again, you said, because I'm doing this, too, there are
- 10:19things you're saying that I think people may not be grasping.
- 10:23One is that you actually have Activities.
- 10:27It is a workshop, it is not a webinar. Right.
- 10:31And that's one of the differences that I made too, is
- 10:35that I have a workshop and people do
- 10:38exercises and they do things in there so that
- 10:42they are actually getting something out of it. I'm trying to actually give
- 10:46them a real time experience. Yes. The other
- 10:49thing I think that I've started doing, which is interesting,
- 10:53is I have been doing a pre workshop
- 10:56survey and I just started doing this and it's been
- 11:00interesting, the feedback that I've gotten. And people seem to fall
- 11:04into a couple categories. You've got the people that fill it out but don't come.
- 11:08The people that don't, don't come and don't fill it out, you know, and so
- 11:12you kind of have an idea of, you know, what's going on.
- 11:16And there was a third thing that you said that I thought was, oh,
- 11:21when you do the same workshop, it builds your authority and credibility.
- 11:26It isn't like you see an activity and you only see it once and
- 11:29you never see it again. It's like the people you know see that
- 11:33you're, you are doing this thing and this is the thing that you're
- 11:37doing that you become known for and
- 11:41just, you know, and I'm sure part of what you, you talk about
- 11:44is, you've said it is people are ready for things at different times.
- 11:49And so sometimes, depending on what your topic is,
- 11:53it takes people a really long time. You know, it can take them a short
- 11:56amount of time or it can take them a really long time to recognize that
- 12:00they have the problem that you're solving. So they may see it one time
- 12:04and go, oh, that's interesting, but that's not what I'm working on, right? And then,
- 12:08and so, you know, one of the jokes that I tell in my, my workshop,
- 12:12it's not a good story, is first of
- 12:15all, people have to see you 12 times at least, right? Different
- 12:19platforms and stuff. So if you do, you know, if you do more than one
- 12:23type of workshop, they now have to see you 24 times you or
- 12:2736 times. So that makes it really hard, much better for
- 12:30you to have them see you 20 times on the same thing than try
- 12:34to stretch it out. But the other thing is
- 12:38that I say
- 12:42it's like having a mobile store. If you do lots of different things
- 12:45on Monday, you're on a one corner and somebody sees you and says, oh, I
- 12:49think I'll come back later this week. But by the time they come back, you've
- 12:53moved it someplace Else. And you're selling something different. Yeah. So
- 12:56it makes it really difficult for them to find you.
- 13:00Yeah, yeah, we are. We are definitely on the same
- 13:04page. And, and the, the other thing that I would
- 13:07say is you're talking about early
- 13:11stage. So there are lots of ways to be consistent
- 13:15even if you don't do a workshop before you start a workshop. And
- 13:18I found, for instance, just showing up at the same
- 13:25networking on a regular basis so that you can get your message out
- 13:28there. The other thing that I,
- 13:32I have, some of my clients use, have office hours. It
- 13:36just means that once a month you are someplace where you
- 13:39answer questions, but they know where to find you. And you
- 13:43also have. Have something, I think, that you can offer people.
- 13:47You know, you can say, when you're networking, I have office,
- 13:50open office hours, you're more than welcome to drop in and ask questions.
- 13:54And that's kind of how I started my workshop, is I did office hours twice
- 13:58a month. And I thought, you know what, I was
- 14:02getting some clients out of it, you know, because sometimes nobody showed up at one
- 14:05person. And we really had a lot of time. But then it was like, I'm
- 14:08already putting two hours a week in this, two hours a month.
- 14:12And so I had the open office hours that came
- 14:16before the workshop so I could feed people
- 14:19into it. Right. And then I had the workshop and the
- 14:23thing that I, that you. I know what it was. I wanted to point out,
- 14:27when you have do the same workshop, you are really
- 14:31in rinse and repeat mode. It is. It's
- 14:35not like you're creating something from scratch over and
- 14:38over, over and over again. I mean, it becomes
- 14:42something that's just a normal part of what you do. And
- 14:46you can put your times out way in advance so that, you
- 14:50know, if somebody comes to register and they go, oh, you know, I
- 14:54don't. I can't come to this one. Maybe I'll come to the next one. So
- 14:57it is a wonderful way to get people.
- 15:00Okay, so this is not about me. What, what?
- 15:05I just want to. I just want to affirm that
- 15:08this system works. Yes. And.
- 15:12And it's a good way to go. I mean, I love it.
- 15:17Is there anything else? Like, what is the thing that you find people are
- 15:20most resistant to besides, I'm not ready?
- 15:25Well, one of the biggest questions always is how. How am I going to get
- 15:28people there? Who's going to come? Who would want to come to my workshop? And
- 15:32I went through that myself a lot, and
- 15:36that's a big thing, because they're again, and you mentioned this earlier, like, wanting to
- 15:39get it perfect the first time out, instead of just doing it and testing it
- 15:43and changing it. And, you know, I always looked at my workshops as,
- 15:47I'm going to test this out and see what happens, you know, and see who
- 15:49comes and who likes it. And then I'm going to change it and fix it
- 15:52and do it again. And. And instead of waiting to get it perfect, because you'll
- 15:56never get it perfect until you actually start doing it. But the other big concern
- 16:00is how do I get people there and
- 16:04who would even want to come? And especially coaches that don't have a big list
- 16:07yet or they don't have a big audience yet. They think, oh, I can't do
- 16:10this yet till I have a big audience. But the truth is, this will help
- 16:13you build your audience, actually. And don't worry about
- 16:17starting off your first one having a bunch of people. What if you just had
- 16:20two or three in the room? That's okay. And you're practicing, you
- 16:24know, the first few that you do, you're kind of practicing and you. I would
- 16:28rather practice on a small group than a large group anyway.
- 16:32So I always say just go out and start doing them. Make sure that you
- 16:36plan the workshop so that it leads to an offer. That was one of the
- 16:40mistakes I made. Make sure you. You know what you're offering and you know
- 16:45how you're presenting it, and then from there plan the workshop content
- 16:48so that it goes to the offer. It's not a different topic, and it should
- 16:52be your core topic anyway, your workshop that you do every month.
- 16:56But start with people you know, go in and
- 17:00do some direct invites on social media with people that you know
- 17:04that you think might be interested to come and just start with that
- 17:07and start small and just let it grow. Because the more that you're doing it
- 17:11and the more consistently that you're doing it, more people will come, your list will
- 17:14grow, your audience will grow. It's a strategy to get
- 17:18clients, but it's also a strategy to grow your list and grow your visibility and
- 17:22grow your audience and be consistently seen around one
- 17:26particular topic. Like, you said that you're the expert in
- 17:29this topic. And I know
- 17:33this just came to me, it's not quite answering your question, but we were talking
- 17:36about different topics and people worrying about the
- 17:40same topic being boring. And. And I always have people say, well, you know,
- 17:44I have this topic I'm going to do this month and this topic. And then
- 17:46they think of all the topics that they could teach on And I'm like, why
- 17:49are you giving away everything? You know, in free workshops or even low,
- 17:53low cost workshops? All that stuff that you want to teach on should
- 17:57be in your program, not giving it
- 18:00out bit by bit. Because like you said, people get confused. They don't know what
- 18:04you're all about. And you're also giving away expertise that you could be
- 18:08packaging inside of a program. And, and so your workshop, your
- 18:12should be a taste, it should be an appetizer of what you do.
- 18:16Right. And then you can package all that other stuff, all the topics
- 18:19you want to talk about into your program and they can pay for it.
- 18:23Well, you know, I think the, the, the, one of the things you said that
- 18:26always, you know, I always think about and I, I tell my
- 18:30clients is you don't put yourself on a pedestal. If you're never on a,
- 18:34if you don't put yourself on a pedestal, you don't have to worry about getting
- 18:36knocked off. I am so glad that I started
- 18:40doing my workshop when I did not have many people because I
- 18:44was not good. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:48When we start, you know, so you don't want to, you don't want to have
- 18:51your first workshop be in front of like 200 people and bomb.
- 18:56No, then you will have burnt your list. But I think the
- 18:59other thing that's important is I think, I believe
- 19:03there are certain, you know, I call them universal principles. You know, there
- 19:07are certain things that need to be true. I mean, for me,
- 19:11I mean, if you say you're going to have an hour workshop, don't make
- 19:14your workshop go for an hour and a half. That just drives me
- 19:18crazy, you know, I mean, and so, you know, one of
- 19:22the things that I do is, you know, I always have some
- 19:25extra things. So if for some reason I'm on, you know, I don't get a
- 19:29lot of engagement or I'm on multi, I'm going really fast
- 19:33and I'm finished a lot sooner than I think. Then I have, you know, I
- 19:36go, does anybody want to play? Does anybody want a hot seat?
- 19:40Yeah. And so, you know, we'll do that. And if they don't, I go,
- 19:44hey guys, you know what? I'm about quality, not quantity.
- 19:48I will gladly gift you back 10 minutes of your day if nobody has
- 19:52any other questions. And I will hang out if anybody does. And
- 19:55so knowing how to be a little bit flexible. But the
- 19:59most important thing I think, and part of what I teach is
- 20:03being yourself is being the way that you are. And this
- 20:07was the big mistake that I made. Is that
- 20:10I had done curriculum development, and, you know, I'd taken
- 20:14all these webinar classes, and, you know, I started with,
- 20:18I think, 20 some PowerPoint slides. And somebody was like,
- 20:22oh, my God, you need to have 50. And then I was like, then they
- 20:25went. I talked to somebody else who said 76. And I
- 20:29was like, do you know. I mean, I was just kind of listening to all
- 20:32this stuff, and I was like, this is not me. I mean, my
- 20:35workshop now has 13 slides. That's it.
- 20:39Right. Because I want to stop the slides and, you know, the
- 20:43PowerPoint and talk to people and interact
- 20:47and you learn what your.
- 20:51What works for you. I would much rather have
- 20:578 to 12 people in the room or 19 that are actually
- 21:01engaged and actually are being involved than
- 21:05to have 30 or 40 people that are saying nothing.
- 21:09Right, right. You know, and so when I put out my thing, I
- 21:12go, this is a real workshop. You want
- 21:16clients. So part of that is being on camera.
- 21:20Yeah. Be prepared to be on camera. And, you know, when I get there,
- 21:23you know, somebody said to me once, I can't believe you
- 21:27bullied us to be on camera. And I was
- 21:31like, all I said is that, you know, you should be on camera.
- 21:35But, you know, what I realized was this probably was not the right person
- 21:39for me. Right. Because I'm telling. Part of what I'm talking about is
- 21:43helping people to show up and be found. And, you know, and
- 21:47if you're not willing to be on camera in. In this kind of a setting,
- 21:50which is, know, a safe, then you're not going to. You're not. You're not going
- 21:53to probably take the advice that I have about how to find clients either.
- 21:57Yeah. Do you know, so you need to have a really
- 22:01good, you know, and one of my clients who was like my wingman once
- 22:05on a workshop afterwards, said, I don't know who that person was
- 22:09that gave that workshop. That's where I was originally going.
- 22:12She said, you didn't listen. You didn't pay attention. You didn't,
- 22:16you know, respond to the chat. And that's not the coach that I
- 22:20love working with. And that. That totally changed everything
- 22:24for me. I mean, I was like, I need to really take
- 22:28a look at this because I'm not being myself.
- 22:31So it's. It's such a good point. And I also say about the
- 22:35camera thing is that if you want to put yourself out there, you want to
- 22:39be found, you want to lead workshops and speak, you need to
- 22:43be on camera when you're attending another event, because People are
- 22:46seeing you. And when you ask questions and you put things in the,
- 22:50in the chat, people are seeing that. And you never know who's in the room
- 22:54that might reach out to you and say, hey, I loved what you said. I
- 22:56love what you asked in that workshop. I'd love to work with you, or I'd
- 22:59love to meet with you. And you're being seen. You're, you're, you're the
- 23:03ones, the ones that are on camera and in, in engaging
- 23:07are the ones that are being seen and remembered by everybody else. And
- 23:10if you're off camera and there's that black square, which I hate talking to a
- 23:14black square, then nobody even knows you're there and nobody pays attention to you,
- 23:17and so you're not being seen. So look at attending
- 23:21events as a way to get more visible as well as
- 23:25hosting it yourself. And practice being on camera and being seen
- 23:28and being comfortable with it and interacting. It's all good, you know, it's all going
- 23:32to be good for you. And I think the thing to remember
- 23:36is this. You know, I have these, these ideas that
- 23:40float around in my brain, but, but it made a lot of sense to me
- 23:45is someone said to me, one of the
- 23:48benefits of participating is there's always somebody that's going to be
- 23:52better than you, and there's always somebody who's going to need what you say.
- 23:56And so where you are is perfect for the people who need what
- 24:00you want, what they need. And so I, One of the things that I
- 24:03found when I totally, you know, I was not a
- 24:07networker, and so I had to really make myself do that.
- 24:11And of course I like everybody else. What I did was I went in and
- 24:15saw everybody with a dollar sign on their forehead, you know,
- 24:19looking for a client, right? And when I finally went,
- 24:22this is not what I'm going for, right? I'm going to make
- 24:26connections and, you know, whatever. And
- 24:30so it surprises me now that I have consistency of
- 24:34networking in certain places and stuff that somebody will say,
- 24:38I'll make a comment and somebody else will go, you need
- 24:42to talk to Yvonne. She can, you know, And I'm like,
- 24:48I'm always, I'm always surprised, you know,
- 24:53okay, so before we run out of time,
- 24:57which I say every week we. I get into this conversation, it's like, oh, my
- 25:00God, the clock is ticking. What are
- 25:04three things that you would suggest that people can do right now?
- 25:09So I would say, first of all, think
- 25:13about, think about doing
- 25:17a workshop. Like, put it on your calendar, maybe put it on your calendar a
- 25:20couple months from now so that it's on your calendar and you feel like,
- 25:23okay, it's on my calendar now I have to do it. Because that will put
- 25:26you into action mode to start planning for it. And you need,
- 25:30especially if you haven't done one before, you need a couple months to make sure
- 25:33you're promoting it and you're planning it. So get it on the calendar.
- 25:37And then if you're scared after you do that, just think about
- 25:41what is the invitation you want to make inside your workshop?
- 25:44What do you want people to do with you after the workshop? And
- 25:48plan that, like whether it's a discovery session to a coaching program or
- 25:52a course or something you're selling in the workshop. What
- 25:56is that all about? What are the results and transformation they're going to get from
- 25:59working with you? Really, like write those down. Not, not the
- 26:03features. Like, we're going to have these sessions and we're going to have this and
- 26:06this and this. But what's the result? What's in it for them?
- 26:10What's going to be good for them? And then take your, take that and
- 26:14plan your workshop. One good technique
- 26:18is to think about what are some of the false beliefs they're going to come
- 26:21up or they have around that topic or around that
- 26:24subject that you is in your program, Right. So if you help people with
- 26:28exercise and nutrition, for example, and you want to invite them into
- 26:32a program for them to lose weight or something, what would
- 26:35be some false beliefs they're going to have about that and talk about that
- 26:39in your workshop and then constantly just talk about
- 26:43when people work with me. This is how we overcome that. And here's another
- 26:47one that's common and get them interacting with you. And yeah, yeah, that's something
- 26:51I struggle with. And here's a little mindset shifter, a
- 26:54prompter, you know, let them do a little exercise with you. But all along
- 26:59you're, you're talking to them about those pain points and those
- 27:03challenges they have. And you're also saying, you know, in my, in,
- 27:07I'm going to make an offer later. I always tell people at the beginning, I'm
- 27:10going to offer something at the end of this. And then you're talking about
- 27:14in, in my program that I'm going to be offering soon, this is what we
- 27:17do. And that way you are right, really priming the pump and you're answering
- 27:21those questions in their mind. So don't be afraid to do your first
- 27:25workshop, but kind of plan it that way first so that you're not Just
- 27:29don't dive deep into all kinds of things. I
- 27:32guess I'm not giving you simple things here, but put it on the
- 27:36count. But you were saying some really good stuff. So do this, do the next
- 27:39thing. And I want to say something too. The last thing I'd say is don't
- 27:43overstuff, don't, don't fill your workshop with
- 27:47so much information that they can't digest it and absorb it.
- 27:51Take out probably most of it and just leave. What feels like to
- 27:55you, Nothing. It's really something for them. Because then like you said earlier, you can
- 27:58go deeper into it, you can spend more time around it and you're giving them
- 28:02an appetizer, not a full buffet. And you don't have to create so
- 28:06much content. And then that way they can absorb it, they can digest it, they
- 28:09can process it. Then they're going to want the full meal, the full
- 28:13buffet at the end, which is awesome.
- 28:17And one of the great things that you can do is
- 28:22find every opportunity that you can to
- 28:25speak before your workshop. Because one,
- 28:29it will help you. I mean, you may just take one little thing that you
- 28:33want to have in your workshop and talk about that and you get comfortable talking
- 28:36about it. And then whenever you're speaking, you can offer your
- 28:40workshop and that'll help you to grow your list. The other
- 28:44thing I do is I will say to ChatGPT,
- 28:48you know, if I have a point, what is, for instance, if we're
- 28:52talking about exercise, what are the top seven
- 28:56reasons people don't exercise? Or, you know, or if you, if
- 28:59you're saying women over 50, you know, you go, what are the top reason
- 29:03seven reasons women over 50 don't exercise? Yeah,
- 29:07and I always say, I say I always use seven because
- 29:11two of them are usually crappy ideas. You know, two of
- 29:15them are maybe two or three of them, maybe things that I've already
- 29:18taken into consideration. And then there's like one or two that are
- 29:22like, I never thought about this, you know, because it's taking a
- 29:26more universal view of things. And
- 29:30I find that, I find that really helpful just to
- 29:33brainstorm and to get it going. But I
- 29:37love everything that you're saying. So what is your gift?
- 29:41So I have created what I call the Clients framework.
- 29:46It's a seven step process to build this kind of workshop from start to
- 29:49finish. And Clients is an acronym. So the gift is
- 29:53my guidebook that walks you through that framework.
- 29:57It's called Workshops that Win Clients. And it'll walk you through
- 30:00the seven steps of the client's framework so that you can start
- 30:04planning a workshop and plan it so that it's, you know,
- 30:08going to keep people involved and get them to that want to step into
- 30:11your offer. And with that, once you download it
- 30:15on the next page, it gives you a free ticket to my event,
- 30:19Virtual Events Bootcamp, where we actually do the whole thing together with
- 30:23you over three days. We use that framework and we build your workshop
- 30:27plan together over three days so you can come to that for
- 30:31free. And you have your guidebook, you have all, all the
- 30:35seven steps, and you also do your monthly workshop.
- 30:39So yeah, if my monthly. Well,
- 30:43my monthly workshop is called the client enrollment workshop. And I talk about my framework
- 30:46and we dive into one piece of it and I get them thinking about, you
- 30:50know, how this could work for them and what we work on one piece of
- 30:54it together. I do a little demo of what kind
- 30:57of offer you could create because that's really the first
- 31:01thing you need to before you plan your workshop. And a lot of times
- 31:04coaches just are selling sessions and they're not selling an actual
- 31:08program that speaks to the results and transformation. They're just
- 31:12saying, hey, we'll have 12 sessions and whatever. Right? I'm laughing
- 31:16because one of the first talks that I did,
- 31:20I had a dynamite talk and I had a dynamite offer and the
- 31:24offer did not match the talk at all. I mean, I went to a three
- 31:27day workshop about building your talk and stuff, and the
- 31:31first thing she said is, let's we reverse engineer this. Yes.
- 31:35And I went, oh, my God, this is why this is not working. Because this
- 31:38offer has nothing to do with my. Exactly.
- 31:42I've done that so many times and
- 31:46people look at you kind of like, huh. So if nothing.
- 31:49So I'm going to tell you to register for, for the boot camp.
- 31:54This is an evergreen podcast. So, you know, if for some reason
- 31:58it's, you know, you're probably going to do it more than once. I do
- 32:02it three times a year, so whenever. So, you know, but,
- 32:05but I, I think the key point to this is that
- 32:09it's sometimes it's the simplest, most common sense things
- 32:13that you can't figure out on your own when you're doing it's.
- 32:17And you think to yourself, I should have known that.
- 32:21Anyway, so that's why, that's why you need an outside perspective and you need help.
- 32:25All right, just very quickly, the fun question. When was the last time
- 32:29you did something new for the first time? Well,
- 32:33recently, actually, I was visiting my daughter early February.
- 32:37This. Just this month or last Month. And she,
- 32:41she loves to do this thing called eco printing with plants and
- 32:45stuff. So we did this whole project together. I'd never done that before, and
- 32:49it was super fun. When she first was telling me about it, I couldn't quite
- 32:52get what it was, but we just spent one
- 32:56day, you know, taking all these flowers and plant pieces and printing them
- 33:00on paper. And I ended up with three or four that
- 33:04I really love. Like, you can turn them into cards or you can frame them
- 33:07or whatever, but you're actually printing with plant matter.
- 33:11And so that was really fun. That sounds
- 33:14fun. That's. I've seen different people do different versions of that.
- 33:19Okay, it's time for a commercial, guys. So if you
- 33:22enjoyed this, I hope you will subscribe, share and engage on
- 33:26social media about this podcast. And like I said, one of the reasons that
- 33:30I did this is I wanted to bring people into the community
- 33:33that maybe you haven't met. And the whole idea of this is to fuel your
- 33:37quest for growth and impact. And so I hope that you'll continue to
- 33:41join me on the one small change. And it, sometimes it's
- 33:45the tiniest shifts that you do over time that will give
- 33:48you monumental transformation. And there are a couple of
- 33:52episodes in there that, you know, I just talk on my own,
- 33:55but every, get, every guest has a
- 33:59gift. And so I hope that you go in and take a look because
- 34:03it's like a personal library that you can go and use
- 34:06to grow your business. So, Janelle. Yes. Give
- 34:10me some last words of wisdom. So there's something that
- 34:14we've sort of talked about a little bit, and I, and I really wanted to
- 34:17bring this home and that is that, you know, the first
- 34:20question coaches will always ask me is how do I find clients?
- 34:24But you've talked about it before during this talk that you want to be
- 34:28found. So I always say the right question to ask yourself is,
- 34:32how do I help my clients find me so that
- 34:36you're not chasing after them? That energy of like, I have to go find
- 34:39clients. No. When you create a monthly workshop like we've been talking
- 34:43about, or any kind of visibility, like the weekly show or the
- 34:46twice a month office hours, you are.
- 34:51I, I like to think of the analogy of a highway and you're looking, you're
- 34:54driving, and you're like, I want some coffee. And you look for the coffee shop
- 34:57sign and now you know where to find the coffee. It's like you're putting a
- 35:01sign in the road where your clients are out there looking. And
- 35:04so you're letting. You're helping them find you. You're not
- 35:08chasing after them. And one statement that
- 35:11turned so much of this around for me was my clients
- 35:15are already looking for me. My clients are looking for me.
- 35:19They're out there on the highways. They're looking for me. It's
- 35:22not that I have to go convince them they're looking for me. So I want
- 35:26to create a way for them to find me.
- 35:29You. You wanna. I absolutely agree with you that your
- 35:33right clients are looking for you. And if you do not
- 35:37show up consistently, you are doing them a disservice.
- 35:40Yes. Oh, God, this was good. All right,
- 35:44guys, we gotta go. And I say that every week. We run out of time
- 35:48and we gotta go. But this is what I want you to remember.
- 35:52Change is simple, but it's not always easy. It requires courage,
- 35:55resilience. Resilience. And a willingness to step out of your comfort
- 35:59zone. If you're not feeling a little bit nervous, then I think it means you
- 36:03don't care. At least that's what it means for me. So I hope that you
- 36:06will continue to join me on the one small change. And
- 36:10until then, I want you to stay very,
- 36:13very curious. Janelle, thank you so
- 36:17much for your time and wisdom. Thank you for having
- 36:21me. It was a pleasure. This was great. Goodbye,
- 36:24everybody. Bye. Bye.
