- 0:00Speaker 1: Curious now.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Craig Way, Hello on a Tuesday to you.
- 0:27Speaker 3: Glad to have you with us this afternoon.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Welcome so the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
- 0:32Speaker 4: hundred the Zone and where you are always always welcome
- 0:38Speaker 4: to tune in the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:42Speaker 3: My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with us.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Also, please to have the producer of the program, Jay Carman,
- 0:50Speaker 4: alongside busy program for you this afternoon. First off, just
- 0:56Speaker 4: let you and this is going in chronological order here.
- 1:01Speaker 4: We will keep you updated on what's going on with
- 1:05Speaker 4: the first of the two semifinals in the World Cup.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I know it doesn't appeal to everybody, but there are
- 1:09Speaker 4: those who have an interest in it. France and Spain
- 1:14Speaker 4: are playing in the semifinals and they're playing in Arlington
- 1:17Speaker 4: right now, or as they like to say, Dallas Stadium
- 1:20Speaker 4: as Pipa likes to call it, and they are just underway,
- 1:24Speaker 4: so obviously scoreless. They've just started there in Dallas in
- 1:28Speaker 4: the first sem of the second semifinal will be at
- 1:30Speaker 4: this time tomorrow when England takes on Argentina. But France
- 1:35Speaker 4: and Spain are playing right now. We'll keep you updated
- 1:38Speaker 4: on that now Additionally, here's some other things. The Baseball
- 1:43Speaker 4: All Star Game is tonight as we know in Philadelphia,
- 1:48Speaker 4: and we'll kind of have a little bit of a
- 1:49Speaker 4: breakdown of that what to look for. I mean, I
- 1:51Speaker 4: know it's an All Star game. I will say this
- 1:53Speaker 4: and I continue to say this that as pro sports,
- 1:58Speaker 4: all star games have in large measure measure jumped the
- 2:04Speaker 4: shark for me, doesn't really hold that much into Baseball.
- 2:09Speaker 4: All Star game is the one that most closely resembles
- 2:14Speaker 4: a regular baseball game. Doesn't identically go because of all
- 2:17Speaker 4: the pitching changes. It happens, you know, every inning and
- 2:20Speaker 4: all that. But that's okay because you're still talking about
- 2:23Speaker 4: outstanding level of pitching coming in at every every point.
- 2:27Speaker 4: So so yeah, I'm gonna watch it tonight. I'm I'm
- 2:31Speaker 4: interested in it and watch it and we will uh
- 2:38Speaker 4: kind of get a preview of it, but also mainly
- 2:40Speaker 4: a baseball mid season evaluation from our MLB insider, uh
- 2:45Speaker 4: Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office. That'll
- 2:48Speaker 4: be coming up in the four o'clock hour. So we'll
- 2:51Speaker 4: visit with Gena on the four o'clock hour to talk baseball. Uh,
- 2:54Speaker 4: the All Star game, the home Run Derby last time,
- 3:00Speaker 4: and in kind of a mid season evow and the draft,
- 3:04Speaker 4: because the Baseball Draft has happened.
- 3:07Speaker 3: We know about that.
- 3:08Speaker 4: We talked about some of the Longhorns who went yesterday,
- 3:10Speaker 4: and we'll talk more about that as well coming up.
- 3:13Speaker 4: But Gene Watson will join us there in the three
- 3:19Speaker 4: o'clock hour. And I understand if you didn't see this yesterday.
- 3:25Speaker 4: This came down yesterday in the midst of everything that
- 3:30Speaker 4: was going on the run up to the home Run
- 3:32Speaker 4: Derby and previews the World Cup, and you know, there's
- 3:36Speaker 4: football things, and you know one of Jake's favorite pastimes
- 3:39Speaker 4: is to peruse the NBA Summer League. He led us,
- 3:42Speaker 4: by the way no yesterday on the program. He has
- 3:46Speaker 4: what less than zero interest in the summer League? Is
- 3:49Speaker 4: that the deal?
- 3:50Speaker 5: And even less interest in folks watching the games and
- 3:53Speaker 5: declaring players busts or steals.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you on that. That's ridiculous, that's silly.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I'm with you on that.
- 4:01Speaker 6: It's not the same thing.
- 4:02Speaker 5: It's not even as close to regular season NBA as
- 4:06Speaker 5: spring training is to baseball.
- 4:07Speaker 4: No, but you know, you see some things in it.
- 4:11Speaker 4: I saw one thing that pleased me. Yesterday I saw
- 4:15Speaker 4: the former longword Jason Kent have a good game for Portland,
- 4:20Speaker 4: and you think for men.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Jason Kent, Jason Kent, when do you go, oh yeah, yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 4: It was a couple of years ago he was he
- 4:24Speaker 4: was playing when Rodney Terry was coaching and all. Jason
- 4:27Speaker 4: Kent wasn't even in organized basketball last year, wasn't even
- 4:31Speaker 4: in the G League. And so for him to get
- 4:34Speaker 4: an opportunity and show what he could do, I thought
- 4:36Speaker 4: that was pretty cool.
- 4:36Speaker 5: How about what Arthur Khaluma did a couple of days
- 4:38Speaker 5: ago with the Lakers.
- 4:39Speaker 4: There's another guy. That's another guy that we're talking about,
- 4:42Speaker 4: you know. So so yeah, it's there. You see things
- 4:47Speaker 4: in glimpses, not just as it relates to guys you
- 4:51Speaker 4: know or the team you follow or whatever. He's just
- 4:54Speaker 4: there's other interesting things that come out of the Summer
- 4:57Speaker 4: League that you might not certainly probably wouldn't see, at
- 5:01Speaker 4: least not in large measure at the largest level in
- 5:04Speaker 4: the NBA.
- 5:05Speaker 3: But there's that.
- 5:06Speaker 4: But yesterday, speaking of basketball, yesterday, there was some information
- 5:15Speaker 4: that came down from the NCAA about the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
- 5:22Speaker 4: And we've already seen, you know, quite a bit happen
- 5:25Speaker 4: with you know what's going to happen with the expansion
- 5:27Speaker 4: of the tournament field of seventy six, and it's got
- 5:30Speaker 4: a lot of people all up at arms about that.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Others like it, Others couldn't care, so on and so forth.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I don't think that in the final analysis, it's going
- 5:42Speaker 4: to make a great difference in terms of the cream
- 5:47Speaker 4: rising to the top. It's going to give some more
- 5:50Speaker 4: teams some opportunities to get into it. That's not what
- 5:53Speaker 4: yesterday's anouncement was about. We already know about that, both
- 5:57Speaker 4: of the men and men's tournament, and with the women's tournament.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Now they did have an announcement with regard to the
- 6:04Speaker 4: women's tournament, and it's with regard to seating and that
- 6:11Speaker 4: there's going to be a change made. Whereas we've seen
- 6:16Speaker 4: on the men's side and the women's side through last year,
- 6:20Speaker 4: in their efforts to balance the bracket and make the
- 6:23Speaker 4: regionals as competitive as possible, sometimes the top sixteen teams.
- 6:29Speaker 4: In fact, I don't think it's ever happened that the
- 6:32Speaker 4: top sixteen teams were all placed.
- 6:35Speaker 3: In one region.
- 6:36Speaker 4: That hadn't happened according to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Committee,
- 6:43Speaker 4: that is going to happen. They're going to make that
- 6:46Speaker 4: change for the coming season that they're going to put
- 6:50Speaker 4: you seated in the regional that you should be based
- 6:54Speaker 4: on your seating. So I got to thinking about it,
- 6:59Speaker 4: and I texted Vic Schaeffer last night, the Texas women's
- 7:03Speaker 4: head coach, and said, Hey, you got any thoughts on that?
- 7:04Speaker 4: And he said yeah, I got some thoughts on him,
- 7:05Speaker 4: and I said, we did, care to pop on and
- 7:09Speaker 4: share them with us tomorrow? He said sure, So Vic Shaefer,
- 7:12Speaker 4: the Texas women's head coach, will be well, we'll check
- 7:14Speaker 4: with him about not just about that, uh, but you know,
- 7:18Speaker 4: we'll ask about, you know, the off season work that's
- 7:20Speaker 4: going on, the new look that his roster will have,
- 7:23Speaker 4: things like that.
- 7:24Speaker 3: So we'll visit with Vic Shaffer to talk some things
- 7:26Speaker 3: like that.
- 7:26Speaker 4: That's in the three o'clock hour, so we'll do that
- 7:29Speaker 4: as well. And as always, we're more than happy to
- 7:33Speaker 4: take your questions, your thoughts, your comments. So all you have
- 7:36Speaker 4: to do is text the word Texas follow by your
- 7:38Speaker 4: question of comment to eight one five three zero. So
- 7:42Speaker 4: you text the word Texas followed by your question of
- 7:44Speaker 4: comment to eight one five three zero standard messaging and
- 7:48Speaker 4: data rates a plot, and so you can text us
- 7:51Speaker 4: that way. You can also reach us via text if
- 7:54Speaker 4: you so choose, I mean, via your voice by using
- 7:57Speaker 4: our talk back feature, using the talkback microphone via the
- 8:02Speaker 4: iHeartRadio app. And what you do with that is you
- 8:05Speaker 4: download the iHeartRadio app. Really easy to do, it's absolutely free.
- 8:09Speaker 4: And then once you have the app downloaded, if you
- 8:12Speaker 4: haven't already, all you have to do then is search
- 8:15Speaker 4: AM thirteen hundred the zone and it'll pop right up.
- 8:18Speaker 4: So when it pops up, you're gonna see two buttons there.
- 8:21Speaker 4: One's little white triangular button that's if you push that,
- 8:24Speaker 4: you're gonna hear what's going on in the air. And
- 8:25Speaker 4: that's fine. But there's another button there. There's a red
- 8:29Speaker 4: one with a little white microphone.
- 8:31Speaker 3: That's the key. That's the talkback microphone.
- 8:33Speaker 4: You push that button and you can leave us a
- 8:35Speaker 4: voice message up to thirty seconds and we can pull
- 8:38Speaker 4: it up right here, so you can hear somebody saying
- 8:41Speaker 4: I don't care about the All Star Game anymore, I
- 8:43Speaker 4: don't want to you know whatever, or a I think
- 8:45Speaker 4: they ought to do this with it, you know whatever,
- 8:49Speaker 4: so you'll you can do it that way and actually
- 8:53Speaker 4: have your voice heard through the talkback microphone or talkback
- 8:58Speaker 4: feature on AM thirteen under the zone which you would
- 9:02Speaker 4: search using the iHeartRadio app. So there's two ways to
- 9:06Speaker 4: reach us on that. So we're happy to have you
- 9:09Speaker 4: reaches on that. I was one of the they said
- 9:16Speaker 4: more than twenty thousand customers I might add the word
- 9:22Speaker 4: victims so to speak, yesterday who were without internet service
- 9:31Speaker 4: in their home. I live in Georgetown and you may
- 9:35Speaker 4: have heard the story by now that there was a
- 9:39Speaker 4: late Sunday night, overnight like I think it was middle
- 9:45Speaker 4: of the night whatever, fiber optic cut by vandals who
- 9:50Speaker 4: were attempting to steal copper wiring, because that can be
- 9:56Speaker 4: that can fetch some dollars if stolen. The only problem
- 9:59Speaker 4: with it, and these guys apparently didn't realize this is
- 10:02Speaker 4: that with fiber optic cables, certainly the ones that Optimum
- 10:05Speaker 4: uses in most Internet companies and all, they don't have
- 10:10Speaker 4: copper cabling in them.
- 10:12Speaker 3: So that's kind of like a do.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Your homework thing before you vandalyze because they think they
- 10:18Speaker 4: might have a line on who did it. Based on
- 10:21Speaker 4: some video recognition or something like that.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:25Speaker 4: We'll see if that happens, but in any event, what
- 10:27Speaker 4: it did was I had no Internet service, and it
- 10:33Speaker 4: also affected T Mobile customers. So, as I mentioned the
- 10:37Speaker 4: end of the show, I was a two time loser
- 10:39Speaker 4: yesterday because I'm a T Mobile customer and I was out.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I was out from like early Monday morning until about
- 10:48Speaker 4: ten o'clock last night, and they said that it wasn't
- 10:52Speaker 4: completely restored to that area, which is kind of on
- 10:56Speaker 4: the north to north the east side of Georgetown. I
- 11:01Speaker 4: live in far north Georgetown. Joke that you can toss
- 11:04Speaker 4: a rock from my house and land it. In general,
- 11:06Speaker 4: it's not quite that close, but it's it's up. It's
- 11:09Speaker 4: pretty far up north. And so those who were living
- 11:13Speaker 4: up in that area, and is a total of about
- 11:14Speaker 4: twenty thousand customers in the Georgetown area, and all of
- 11:20Speaker 4: us lost our Internet service, and those of us who
- 11:24Speaker 4: were also Tea Mobile customers lost too. So I had
- 11:27Speaker 4: no phone service and no Internet service from from like
- 11:33Speaker 4: late night Sunday, and I didn't realize I still.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Had it when it went to bed.
- 11:36Speaker 4: I woke up Monday morning yesterday morning and didn't have it,
- 11:38Speaker 4: So from overnight sometimes Sunday night, two, three in the morning,
- 11:41Speaker 4: whenever it was that it happened that the vandalism occurred
- 11:46Speaker 4: all the way up until around ten o'clock last night.
- 11:49Speaker 4: I had no internet service and I had no phone service.
- 11:53Speaker 4: It got restored at least to the part that I
- 11:56Speaker 4: live in, like around ten o'clock, but I got an
- 12:03Speaker 4: indication that it didn't. It wasn't completely totally one hundred
- 12:11Speaker 4: percent repaired and restored until I think about four o'clock
- 12:15Speaker 4: this morning, something like that.
- 12:17Speaker 6: So Craig, I was thinking about this.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Yeah, it happened on the one night that the only
- 12:22Speaker 5: major sporting event in town was on Netflix.
- 12:26Speaker 6: That's right, So you're really in a sports.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I had no shot at all to watch the home
- 12:33Speaker 4: run derby, none at all.
- 12:35Speaker 5: You probably haven't been in that big of a sports
- 12:37Speaker 5: desert and for most of.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Your life unless I was, you know, by design out
- 12:42Speaker 4: somewhere right, and I did, so, Yeah, I was without it.
- 12:47Speaker 6: You were stranded, but I.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Did see all the highlights. This morning, we're going to
- 12:50Speaker 4: talk about that. We're going to hear from the two
- 12:53Speaker 4: finalists who got there. So we'll we'll we'll do all
- 12:58Speaker 4: of that coming up, and like I said, we'll take
- 13:03Speaker 4: your questions, your thoughts, and all of that there on
- 13:07Speaker 4: the text line. Text the word Texas follow by your
- 13:10Speaker 4: question or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard
- 13:15Speaker 4: messaging and data race may apply. And or you can
- 13:19Speaker 4: reach us via the talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app.
- 13:23Speaker 4: Download the free and easy iHeart Radio app and then
- 13:26Speaker 4: search ADUM thirteen under the zone it'll come up. Then
- 13:30Speaker 4: you push the red bunt with a white microphone, you
- 13:32Speaker 4: can leave us a message up to thirty seconds. All right,
- 13:35Speaker 4: we're gonna recap the All Star the All Star Home
- 13:38Speaker 4: Run derby coming up next, and we got a lot
- 13:41Speaker 4: of other topics to get to here on a Tuesday afternoon. Yes,
- 13:43Speaker 4: we do have Inconceivable, and boy do we have a
- 13:47Speaker 4: couple of items for you on Inconceivable today. We'll get
- 13:50Speaker 4: to all that in more right here on sports Radio
- 13:52Speaker 4: AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeart Radio app.
- 14:15Speaker 7: It's the craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 14:17Speaker 7: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.
- 14:26Speaker 3: It's at tax Tuesday year on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 14:29Speaker 3: under the zone.
- 14:31Speaker 4: In the four o'clock hour, we'll have included in our
- 14:35Speaker 4: return cuts an offering from the King George Strait. In
- 14:38Speaker 4: the three o'clock hour, something from the iconic will announce,
- 14:41Speaker 4: and here in the two o'clock hour always something from
- 14:44Speaker 4: the immortal Steve the Ray on.
- 14:48Speaker 3: The crossfire.
- 14:49Speaker 8: There.
- 14:50Speaker 6: Indeed we are, and we got the studio version today.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Yes, Santa Maria from Matt Veskersion bringing us back there too.
- 14:59Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Yeah, so that was.
- 15:03Speaker 4: And first of all, before we get back to the
- 15:04Speaker 4: baseball update, still scoreless friends in Spain. They played twenty
- 15:08Speaker 4: minutes so far there in Arlington in the World Cup
- 15:12Speaker 4: Summerfinal there, so they are scoreless twenty minutes in this
- 15:16Speaker 4: twenty minutes.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Could have probably been an email.
- 15:19Speaker 5: Yeah, one good chance Spain had a free kick wasted,
- 15:22Speaker 5: It blasted right into the wall.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it's this is in the stage where they say
- 15:27Speaker 4: the teams are feeling it, feeling each other out and
- 15:30Speaker 4: feel for.
- 15:31Speaker 6: An early goal may open things up.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Yeah, hadn't happened yet.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Okay, So yeah, that was Matt pass Gershon on the
- 15:38Speaker 4: call of Jordan Walker's home run to win the home
- 15:41Speaker 4: run derby. Now to kind of set the scene for
- 15:46Speaker 4: you a little bit yesterday on the show, Jake was
- 15:52Speaker 4: thinking that it was probably going to be Bryce Harper
- 15:56Speaker 4: winning it in his home ballpark for the second time
- 15:58Speaker 4: in his career, telling anybody's ever done that since he
- 16:03Speaker 4: did it when he played for your Washington Nationals.
- 16:06Speaker 3: But he got knocked out the first round? Did he
- 16:07Speaker 3: he did?
- 16:08Speaker 6: He missed the he missed the he missed the cut.
- 16:10Speaker 5: It was gonna be one Philly through in one Philly
- 16:13Speaker 5: out because Bryce was last and Kyle Schwarber was the
- 16:15Speaker 5: fourth qualifying score to get through to the semis. So
- 16:18Speaker 5: it was a bittersweet moment there for the crowd, and
- 16:21Speaker 5: for a few minutes I thought I had simply picked
- 16:23Speaker 5: the wrong Philly because Schwarber, who was.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Runner up to Harper, he was the guy who I picked,
- 16:27Speaker 4: and I thought he might win. Uh And it looked
- 16:30Speaker 4: like he might because Schwarmer beat Wilson Contreras in the
- 16:36Speaker 4: semifinals and UH and then the Cardinals youngster Jordan Walker
- 16:42Speaker 4: UH managed to get past Junior Camaniero, who was really
- 16:46Speaker 4: the popular pick of a lot of folks, including a
- 16:48Speaker 4: lot of the panelists we had talked about yesterday.
- 16:50Speaker 3: He was he was definitely.
- 16:53Speaker 4: You know, on the list, a lot of people thought
- 16:56Speaker 4: it might happen, and but it was. It was really
- 17:01Speaker 4: weird that, you know, Harper got eliminated in the first round.
- 17:03Speaker 3: He only hit eight home runs.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Jack Cagnown was another guy that was a popular choice.
- 17:09Speaker 4: He only hit eight Minnitokomura Comi a popular choice only
- 17:12Speaker 4: at nine.
- 17:14Speaker 5: They were nine majestic backspun, high arching beauties.
- 17:18Speaker 6: I enjoyed Murra Commi's round.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Yeah, just didn't have enough of them. So so then
- 17:27Speaker 4: then they were they were really getting down to the
- 17:32Speaker 4: semifinals and then to the finals, and the Philadelphia crowd
- 17:37Speaker 4: apparently was just going ballistic, right.
- 17:39Speaker 6: Oh yeah, there was.
- 17:42Speaker 5: If you weren't Kyle Schwarber or Bryce Harper, you were
- 17:45Speaker 5: getting booed.
- 17:46Speaker 6: If you dropped the ball in the outfield, you got booed.
- 17:49Speaker 5: If you stepped up and hit a bunch of home
- 17:51Speaker 5: runs and celebrated, you weren't wearing a Phillies uniform, you
- 17:54Speaker 5: got booed.
- 17:54Speaker 6: It was a little much on the booing, but it
- 17:56Speaker 6: made for a really fun atmosphere.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Hey, update, Spain has just scored.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Yeah, as a penalty is a clumsy penalty conceded by
- 18:03Speaker 5: Spain or conceded by friends. Lam and Jamal drew it
- 18:06Speaker 5: on a ball that was right at the corner of
- 18:08Speaker 5: the box. French defender was trying to roundhouse clear it
- 18:11Speaker 5: and instead he kicked Lamal Jamal right in the hip.
- 18:14Speaker 6: Gave up a penalty right in the box.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Not a good thing.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Spain gets the penalty and they have the early one
- 18:20Speaker 4: nill lead as they near the first hydration break.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Of the match.
- 18:26Speaker 4: So it'll be coming up in a little bit, but
- 18:28Speaker 4: it's one nill right now, Spain on top of right.
- 18:29Speaker 4: So back to this home run derby the new it
- 18:33Speaker 4: was a new format. In case you didn't here, there
- 18:35Speaker 4: were twenty untimed swings because that had been an unpopular
- 18:41Speaker 4: thing in the past, being on the clock, and there
- 18:44Speaker 4: were a lot of people that not like that. Thought
- 18:46Speaker 4: guys were rushed and they were overswinging and things like
- 18:49Speaker 4: that because of what was happening with the clock.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Yeah, and then you'd see round sort of play out
- 18:53Speaker 5: the string where you knew a guy was not going
- 18:56Speaker 5: to advance and he saw frustration with it. This was
- 18:58Speaker 5: also great to have the clock be eliminated because fans
- 19:03Speaker 5: got to admire these home runs yeah.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Didn't have to happen bam bam, bam, rapid fire. So
- 19:08Speaker 4: what it did was it allowed for twenty untimed swings
- 19:14Speaker 4: in the first round, fifteen in the semifinals, and fifteen
- 19:17Speaker 4: in the final. Now you mentioned Majestic Blast. Caminea had
- 19:23Speaker 4: a four hundred ninety one foot shot in the first round.
- 19:26Speaker 4: That was the longest home run of the night, nobody
- 19:28Speaker 4: top five hundred feet. It landed one foot further than
- 19:33Speaker 4: Wilson Contrera's longest, which was four hundred and ninety feet,
- 19:37Speaker 4: also in the first round at that point. So then
- 19:41Speaker 4: then I mentioned that Schwarber beat Contreras in the semifinals,
- 19:44Speaker 4: Walker knocked out Cavian Arrow. So now it was down
- 19:47Speaker 4: to those two and the place was going crazy, obviously
- 19:52Speaker 4: for Kyle Schwarber because this was going to be the
- 19:54Speaker 4: third time. It was going to be the charm because
- 19:55Speaker 4: he'd gotten close in the past, I think, didn't he
- 19:58Speaker 4: He lose two years ago to taoscar Hernandez of the Dodgers,
- 20:05Speaker 4: right if I remember correct.
- 20:06Speaker 5: And then before that was the one we talked about
- 20:07Speaker 5: from twenty eighteen in DC.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Right exactly. So So anyway they got into it, they
- 20:17Speaker 4: start the final round and Schwarber hit what was it eleven,
- 20:25Speaker 4: and Walker was standing at what six at that point?
- 20:30Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 20:31Speaker 6: All right, so it got down to his last falling.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Because here was the other rule when you were when
- 20:38Speaker 4: you get down to your last swing, you get to
- 20:45Speaker 4: keep swinging. As long as you hit one out, you
- 20:47Speaker 4: may be down to one. It's kind of like in
- 20:50Speaker 4: challenges one challenge. As long as you keep winning the challenge,
- 20:52Speaker 4: you hold the challenge.
- 20:54Speaker 6: Can we do this in the three point contest?
- 20:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that would be good. You'd see him get on
- 20:58Speaker 4: a roll. So he was still down I think eleven
- 21:01Speaker 4: eight at that point, he was down three to Schwarber.
- 21:05Speaker 4: Was Jordan Walker down three and he had three He
- 21:12Speaker 4: had to come up with three and he was down
- 21:13Speaker 4: in one swing. So bam, HiT's one out for nine, Bam,
- 21:18Speaker 4: another one for ten, Bam. He ties it at eleven
- 21:22Speaker 4: and then he hits a four hundred and seven foot
- 21:25Speaker 4: blash to left to win it.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 21:30Speaker 4: He's he's making this season seven hundred ninety nine thousand,
- 21:35Speaker 4: four hundred dollars. That's his salary. And I know to
- 21:38Speaker 4: me and you and lots of people, that's a lot
- 21:39Speaker 4: of money in the baseball world. That's peanuts. That's the
- 21:43Speaker 4: bottom of the barrel. Seven ninety nine, four hundred. He
- 21:46Speaker 4: got a million bucks for winning it last night, so
- 21:50Speaker 4: that was a good story.
- 21:52Speaker 3: It did kind of.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Ruin the evening for the Philadelphia fans who wanted to
- 21:57Speaker 4: see Schwarber win it. But Jordan Walker the same those
- 22:00Speaker 4: Cardinals wins it. And he was asking is is he
- 22:04Speaker 4: got into that last round and there was the pressure
- 22:08Speaker 4: of what he was going to do. How could he
- 22:10Speaker 4: do it? How could he hit three consecutives and tie?
- 22:13Speaker 4: And then he hit another one to win it. So
- 22:14Speaker 4: he was asked what was he thinking about at the
- 22:16Speaker 4: time to help him with the pressure.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, honestly the pressure.
- 22:22Speaker 9: You know, people ballooning me.
- 22:25Speaker 10: And one thought it was just like to say, fluid,
- 22:27Speaker 10: you can't swing too hard. And I missed the ball
- 22:30Speaker 10: and that was it. And Ksey did an unbelievable job
- 22:32Speaker 10: just throwing money BP the whole time.
- 22:33Speaker 4: So he props h k t is his batting practice pitcher,
- 22:38Speaker 4: Kleininger Tehran is that.
- 22:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it's his bullpen catcher. And they've been they've been
- 22:44Speaker 5: together for all three years of Walker's.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Big league career.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Oh, Wow, amazing.
- 22:48Speaker 6: Walker always Uh yeah, Well you'll hear it a little
- 22:51Speaker 6: later on.
- 22:51Speaker 3: If we get to it. Yeah, yeah, and we will.
- 22:53Speaker 4: We'll hear from him talking about Clinetger Turan a little
- 22:56Speaker 4: bit bit later on. Meanwhile, Schwarber was asked about out
- 23:00Speaker 4: what Walker did, how he pulled that off and when
- 23:04Speaker 4: it got down to the last swing and he's still
- 23:07Speaker 4: up three, did you think he had it one?
- 23:10Speaker 8: Man?
- 23:10Speaker 3: That was impressive.
- 23:11Speaker 11: I mean I didn't didn't ever think I had it
- 23:13Speaker 11: one because I know anything can happen, especially when it
- 23:16Speaker 11: gets sounded that last ball right, uh, and you know
- 23:20Speaker 11: the big the big one was that you know, the
- 23:22Speaker 11: ball hits the top of the wall there and it
- 23:23Speaker 11: s knuck over and I was like, oh, that one's
- 23:25Speaker 11: not good for us.
- 23:26Speaker 3: And and then.
- 23:28Speaker 11: Obviously you get to the last ball that he's got
- 23:31Speaker 11: to go three to tie I think, or it was
- 23:33Speaker 11: three to tire, three to win, and three to tie,
- 23:36Speaker 11: and he went forth to win.
- 23:38Speaker 3: And you tip your hat to him. I mean he
- 23:41Speaker 3: was able to.
- 23:41Speaker 11: I was saying, they were willing against him pretty much
- 23:44Speaker 11: to distract and whatever it is to try to will
- 23:46Speaker 11: that ball not to go over the fence. And he
- 23:48Speaker 11: was able to slow it down and be in the
- 23:51Speaker 11: moment there, and he was able to get the job done,
- 23:54Speaker 11: and he was hitting some laser beams like I was like,
- 23:56Speaker 11: dang man, I'm hitting these high fly balls and these
- 23:58Speaker 11: guys are hitting the little laser beams out.
- 24:00Speaker 3: But it was really impressive what he was able to do.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, indeed, so Jordan Walker. How many of you
- 24:08Speaker 4: had Jordan Walker winning it?
- 24:10Speaker 7: Now?
- 24:10Speaker 6: Put your hands down.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yes.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I asked the same thing two years ago about Tayoscar
- 24:15Speaker 4: and Nanidis Ornandez.
- 24:17Speaker 3: How many of you have Tayo winning it? You're lying
- 24:19Speaker 3: if you did. I'm a Dodger fan and I did
- 24:21Speaker 3: not expect.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Tayo to win it any wanted. So yeah, yeah, you
- 24:25Speaker 4: know that's not the yeah, but that happens in this thing,
- 24:29Speaker 4: the home run derby. You do get some unexpected winners.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Now you get expected winners like a cal Raley. You know,
- 24:35Speaker 4: people thought, you know, the big dumper could do it,
- 24:37Speaker 4: and he did, and Pete Alonzo's wanted what three times?
- 24:41Speaker 4: I think Ken Griffy Junior multiple times in the past,
- 24:45Speaker 4: there have been guys who were really really good at
- 24:48Speaker 4: it that could crush it and knock the ball out
- 24:51Speaker 4: and Jordan Walker is an extremely talented player. Got a
- 24:54Speaker 4: chance to see him and playing in Saint Louis a
- 24:55Speaker 4: couple of weeks ago when I was on vacation. But
- 24:59Speaker 4: I don't know the anybody thought he would win the
- 25:01Speaker 4: home run derby. Put it this way, I neither read
- 25:05Speaker 4: nor heard one prediction of him winning it. Yeah, there
- 25:09Speaker 4: were too many other popular predictions, whether it be Schwarber
- 25:14Speaker 4: or Harper or camin Arrow. Even Ben Rice, you know,
- 25:19Speaker 4: was was, you know, a popular choice by a lot
- 25:22Speaker 4: of people.
- 25:22Speaker 6: He struggled a little bit.
- 25:23Speaker 5: And Jordan Walker was one of the longest odds to win.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Coming in He had eight to one odds depending on
- 25:31Speaker 5: where you looked. Only Ben Rice and Wilson Contreras.
- 25:33Speaker 6: Had longer odds.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Was that according to fan Duel.
- 25:37Speaker 5: According to CBS Sports. And then I'm sure they're getting
- 25:41Speaker 5: their odds from somewhere.
- 25:42Speaker 4: Yeah, from the boys in the desert. You know, I'd
- 25:46Speaker 4: you like to be one of those guys you set
- 25:47Speaker 4: the odds for the home run derby. Of course, there's
- 25:50Speaker 4: lots of weird prop bets and things like that that happened,
- 25:53Speaker 4: and of course, and there'll be prop bets for Tonight's
- 25:55Speaker 4: All Star Game as well. Who scores the first run,
- 25:58Speaker 4: who hits who hits the first home run, Who scores
- 26:02Speaker 4: what proves to be the winning run. I think I
- 26:06Speaker 4: saw a prop bet who commits the first error?
- 26:10Speaker 5: So this is the weekend where you learn who's got
- 26:12Speaker 5: the gambling problem?
- 26:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 26:16Speaker 4: You know, like the guy that apparently took his cue
- 26:19Speaker 4: from Bryce Harper off the off the cameo video and
- 26:23Speaker 4: got all kinds of invites from draft Kings and went
- 26:26Speaker 4: ahead and did it and developed a gambling problem with
- 26:31Speaker 4: a two million dollar debt. Now he's suing them, saying,
- 26:34Speaker 4: you guys provided a gateway drug.
- 26:36Speaker 3: For me, you know, in terms of gambling. That was
- 26:39Speaker 3: the story we had yesterday.
- 26:41Speaker 4: All Right, it is one nil Spain still leading France
- 26:46Speaker 4: in that World Cup semifinal and was on a penalty kick.
- 26:49Speaker 4: They are now about to be in their thirty third
- 26:52Speaker 4: minute to play there in Arlington. That's the first of
- 26:56Speaker 4: the two semifinals. The second one is tomorrow and that's
- 27:00Speaker 4: England and Argentina, and then the weekend in the World Cup,
- 27:05Speaker 4: they do what's not done in any other major professional sport,
- 27:10Speaker 4: and that is they have a third place game. They
- 27:13Speaker 4: played for third, and I remember I had an anniversary
- 27:18Speaker 4: of a Facebook post come up and it was like
- 27:21Speaker 4: from twenty what was a twenty eighteen and I talked
- 27:26Speaker 4: about I think it was Germany against the Netherlands. Anyway,
- 27:33Speaker 4: it was a third place match, and I said, Americans
- 27:36Speaker 4: are rolling their eyes over this kind of thing because
- 27:40Speaker 4: the third place game went the way of the dinosaur
- 27:42Speaker 4: they used to have in the NCAA Basketball tournament all
- 27:44Speaker 4: the way up through eighty one. They said, the thing
- 27:47Speaker 4: that really killed it off. But there had been some
- 27:53Speaker 4: there had been a lot of adverse reaction to playing
- 27:57Speaker 4: the third place game in the NCAA Basketball Tournament in
- 27:59Speaker 4: the final four.
- 28:01Speaker 3: For years.
- 28:01Speaker 4: It had its moments to this day. The record for
- 28:07Speaker 4: the most point scored in a final four game was
- 28:11Speaker 4: done by Bill Bradley, later of the New York Knicks
- 28:14Speaker 4: and the Senator. Bill Bradley, who for Princeton in nineteen
- 28:19Speaker 4: sixty five scored fifty eight points against Wichita State. It
- 28:23Speaker 4: was in the third place game, the third but it
- 28:25Speaker 4: counts as a final four game in the NCAA record books,
- 28:29Speaker 4: So he scored fifty eight. That was in a third
- 28:31Speaker 4: place game when I was thirteen. My dad had tickets
- 28:39Speaker 4: to the nineteen seventy four Final four in Greensboro.
- 28:42Speaker 3: He didn't take me.
- 28:43Speaker 4: I wanted him to take me, but he knew that
- 28:45Speaker 4: NC State was in it. I was a Carolina fan.
- 28:47Speaker 4: He goes, you don't even care about state here at Caroline.
- 28:50Speaker 4: He was gonna take his brother anyway, my uncle. It
- 28:52Speaker 4: made sense. So that third place game that was played
- 28:58Speaker 4: before the championship was UCLA against Kansas. UCLA had won
- 29:05Speaker 4: seven straight national titles, but they got beat in double
- 29:08Speaker 4: overtime in the semifinals by North Carolina State with David
- 29:11Speaker 4: Thompson and Tom Burlison and that great team that went
- 29:13Speaker 4: on to beat Marquette to win the national championship. But
- 29:19Speaker 4: you know a lot of people thought that UCLA streak
- 29:22Speaker 4: ended with a lost n C State.
- 29:24Speaker 3: In the national championship.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Wasn't the National Championships in the semifinals, So n C
- 29:29Speaker 4: State would go on to play Marquette for the national title.
- 29:33Speaker 4: UCLA had to play the third place game and Bill
- 29:37Speaker 4: Walton almost boycotted it. He almost said I'm not going
- 29:42Speaker 4: to play. He ended up playing Ucla. I think he
- 29:44Speaker 4: ended up winning the game. Say the different stories surrounding
- 29:48Speaker 4: these third place games, and so they get down in
- 29:52Speaker 4: nineteen eighty one and it's going to be North Carolina
- 29:58Speaker 4: against Indiana National Championship in Philadelphia. Isaiah Thomas is playing
- 30:04Speaker 4: for Indiana in that and they had both won their
- 30:12Speaker 4: semifinal games. North Carolina had beaten Virginia and Ralph Sampson
- 30:16Speaker 4: was like the fourth time they played that year in
- 30:18Speaker 4: one semifinal. Indiana beat LSU in the other semifinal, so
- 30:24Speaker 4: LSU has to play Virginia in the third place game.
- 30:29Speaker 4: That day was marked by another occasion, the assassination attempt
- 30:32Speaker 4: of President Reagan. He was shot by John Hinckley Junior
- 30:36Speaker 4: and recovered in surgery, but he was shot. So there
- 30:40Speaker 4: was a lot of questions about whether to even play
- 30:45Speaker 4: the National championship game that night, and ultimately the decision
- 30:50Speaker 4: was made that they would play. Ward had come the
- 30:54Speaker 4: President was out of dangers in recovery and he said, yes,
- 30:56Speaker 4: they should play the game. Well, if they're going to
- 30:59Speaker 4: play the champion, that means they have to play the
- 31:01Speaker 4: third place game, which was Indiana and LSU. And people
- 31:04Speaker 4: are thinking, if you think a national championship game would
- 31:07Speaker 4: be meaningless on a day like this, what do you
- 31:09Speaker 4: think a third place game with me? So they asked,
- 31:13Speaker 4: I think it was Rudy Macklin of LSU after the game,
- 31:20Speaker 4: do you think you should have played this game given
- 31:22Speaker 4: what happened? And Macklin gave the response that they said.
- 31:25Speaker 4: If there was any one comment that killed off the
- 31:27Speaker 4: third place game, it was Rudy Macklin's comment. When they
- 31:30Speaker 4: said do you think you should have played a third
- 31:33Speaker 4: place game on the day that the president was shot?
- 31:36Speaker 3: He said why not? He ain't.
- 31:37Speaker 4: No kin of mine was the actual line. Third place
- 31:42Speaker 4: game was gone after that year, did not return. But
- 31:45Speaker 4: they do play it in the World Cup. They do
- 31:47Speaker 4: play the they do play the World the third place
- 31:51Speaker 4: and from what I understand that it's a completely different mindset.
- 31:55Speaker 4: It's kind of almost like playing an Olympic matchup. There
- 32:00Speaker 4: are salary incentives for those players on those national teams
- 32:05Speaker 4: if it's a win, if they play well, if they
- 32:07Speaker 4: score so there's all kinds of other incentives to play
- 32:12Speaker 4: that third place match that'll happen on Saturday, and then
- 32:15Speaker 4: of course it clears the.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Stage for the World Cup final on Sunday, and we'll
- 32:21Speaker 3: see you, I would say, this.
- 32:22Speaker 4: If it's England and France in the third place game,
- 32:24Speaker 4: it'll have some intrigue if it's just like it would
- 32:27Speaker 4: be if it was England and France in the championship.
- 32:29Speaker 4: But right now, Spain's up on France and England would
- 32:32Speaker 4: still have to beat Argentina.
- 32:33Speaker 5: Well, and I'll sell you Argentina being in the third
- 32:35Speaker 5: place game would have intrigue. It's Messi's potential last time
- 32:38Speaker 5: on the World Cup stage. The Golden Boot race would
- 32:40Speaker 5: be decided in that game.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Yeah, could be Harry Kane's final match on the stage
- 32:45Speaker 4: for England, who knows. And Bobby's going to be around
- 32:49Speaker 4: a while and he's gonna be all time leading scorer
- 32:51Speaker 4: in World Cup history before his career is done. In fact,
- 32:54Speaker 4: he's pretty close to it now, but he'll be the
- 32:56Speaker 4: all time score when it happens. All right again, it's
- 32:59Speaker 4: one nil Spain on of France. Up next, we bring
- 33:01Speaker 4: in Conceivable here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 33:04Speaker 4: zone of the iHeartRadio app. Second hour of the program
- 33:19Speaker 4: here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone Craig
- 33:24Speaker 4: Way alongside the producer Jay Kerrman.
- 33:26Speaker 3: We'll with you up until five o'clock this afternoon.
- 33:29Speaker 4: Coming up in a few minutes, we'll visit with Texas
- 33:31Speaker 4: women's basketball head coach Vick Schaeffer. Talk to him about
- 33:34Speaker 4: the off season, where his team's going on, the new
- 33:36Speaker 4: faces on the team.
- 33:38Speaker 3: And then also this updated format change.
- 33:44Speaker 4: I guess it's the best way to describe it, at
- 33:46Speaker 4: least in term of the seating change for the NCAA
- 33:49Speaker 4: Women's Tournament, which goes into effect next year. This just
- 33:52Speaker 4: came down yesterday, so we get his thoughts on that
- 33:54Speaker 4: and some other topics as well. Four o'clock hour Gene Watson,
- 33:58Speaker 4: our MLB Inside It from the Chicago White Sox front
- 34:01Speaker 4: office joins this mid season eval so evaluating the the
- 34:07Speaker 4: Major League Baseball season to this point and also a
- 34:12Speaker 4: look at the All Star Game and look back at
- 34:14Speaker 4: the Major League Draft as well. So we'll have that
- 34:17Speaker 4: coming up in a few minutes.
- 34:18Speaker 1: You know.
- 34:19Speaker 4: During the break, I got a text from good friend
- 34:22Speaker 4: Brett Mangold. He is a pretty well known restaurant tour
- 34:28Speaker 4: restaurant man in the restaurant management business here in the
- 34:31Speaker 4: Greater Rosston area. He's he's the commissioner my Fantasy Football
- 34:34Speaker 4: league too. Oh okay, he's he plays, he has several
- 34:40Speaker 4: teams in several different types of leagues, kind of like
- 34:42Speaker 4: you do.
- 34:42Speaker 6: Sounds like me. I've had Dynasty drafts all week.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Yeah, so he's he's always basically that sort of thing
- 34:47Speaker 4: and has done a fabulous job as our commissioner for
- 34:50Speaker 4: like the last twenty years.
- 34:51Speaker 3: I guess it is something like that.
- 34:52Speaker 4: But anyway, he heard me say that, Man, I may
- 34:56Speaker 4: change my fantasy football team name to the Green Pit Vipers,
- 35:00Speaker 4: the poisonous snakes that have gotten loose in China. My
- 35:03Speaker 4: fantasy football team name since like nineteen ninety nine has
- 35:07Speaker 4: been the Wampascats, which is like Itasca, Texas, which I
- 35:10Speaker 4: always said was the quintessential high school football mascot name
- 35:15Speaker 4: is Itaska? The Wampascats. Hopefully they'll have a better season.
- 35:18Speaker 4: So they had the fourth of their last four games.
- 35:19Speaker 4: The year they didn't have enough players to field a
- 35:21Speaker 4: team and there were a two eighteen and eleven man school,
- 35:24Speaker 4: but they'd had injuries and other issues and so they
- 35:27Speaker 4: ended up having it. They went winless last year, so
- 35:29Speaker 4: hopefully it'll be a new year for the Wampascats. Well,
- 35:31Speaker 4: I had I had a game last year and did
- 35:33Speaker 4: some bad luck where in our scoring rules when a
- 35:40Speaker 4: couple of unique scoring rules, but in our league, and
- 35:42Speaker 4: I don't know how this is that prevalent in other
- 35:44Speaker 4: rules but other leagues. But on a two point conversion pass,
- 35:51Speaker 4: so I got quarterback throws to a guy and the end.
- 35:53Speaker 4: So for the scoring, how was that scored in your league?
- 35:56Speaker 5: In our league it is two points for the guy
- 35:59Speaker 5: who called for the guy who caught it in the quarterback.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Who threw it, he also gets too. He also gets two. Okay,
- 36:05Speaker 4: in our league the quarterback gets one, which.
- 36:08Speaker 5: Is more accurate because you're forgetting four for a touchdown.
- 36:11Speaker 6: Las two point conversion should be one.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Right, except that the algorithm didn't catch it and it
- 36:19Speaker 4: was too late and all this stuff. And I ended
- 36:22Speaker 4: up losing a game by one point as a result
- 36:23Speaker 4: of that, because I would have won on the tiebreaker,
- 36:26Speaker 4: which was the total number of the points by your reserves.
- 36:29Speaker 6: So what do you do? What is you put it
- 36:31Speaker 6: on the commissioner's desk?
- 36:33Speaker 4: He he, being proactive as he was, contacted me the
- 36:36Speaker 4: next morning and started off with apologies and said, hey, look,
- 36:40Speaker 4: this wasn't caught in advance and we can't correct it.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Now.
- 36:45Speaker 5: So I'm just calling to tell y'all, well, what platform
- 36:49Speaker 5: are you guys using CBS? Oh there, you see, there's
- 36:52Speaker 5: your problem.
- 36:52Speaker 4: Yeah, well you know, so anyway we got so I
- 36:57Speaker 4: got hosed on it and it wound up costing me.
- 37:01Speaker 4: I think it made the playoffs, but it was like
- 37:02Speaker 4: the sixth seed. I barely got in and I got
- 37:04Speaker 4: knocked out in the first round or something like. It
- 37:06Speaker 4: was the difference between being the sixth seed and the
- 37:08Speaker 4: three seat, because I think I would have won my
- 37:09Speaker 4: division or something like that. I don't remember that part
- 37:12Speaker 4: of it. But anyway, he said, he's the point of
- 37:15Speaker 4: all this is that he said, hey, maybe it'll bring
- 37:18Speaker 4: you some new luck the green Pit Vipers. I said, yeah,
- 37:21Speaker 4: maybe it'll get me a point on the two point Converton.
- 37:24Speaker 3: We're about to shay.
- 37:25Speaker 5: Yeah, So being a commissioner could be a thankless job.
- 37:28Speaker 9: Yeah it is.
- 37:29Speaker 4: And he doesn't faulous job on that, and I you know,
- 37:32Speaker 4: it was what it was. Sometimes things just don't work
- 37:35Speaker 4: out for you, you know it. It was unfortunate. It happened,
- 37:38Speaker 4: and we all learned and he fixed it. He corrected
- 37:41Speaker 4: it from that point on the rest of the season.
- 37:44Speaker 3: It didn't.
- 37:45Speaker 4: It did not factor in any other results the rest
- 37:49Speaker 4: of the way, because you know, you wouldn't want that
- 37:51Speaker 4: to happen. It's like that that story I told about
- 37:54Speaker 4: Cheechi Rodriguez playing in the Legends of Golf, and Bill
- 37:58Speaker 4: Schoening told this story because Bill Schoning saw this with
- 38:01Speaker 4: his own eyes. The Chee Chee was out on like
- 38:06Speaker 4: number seven or number eight or whatever it was. He
- 38:08Speaker 4: was hitting a shot there at Barton Creek at the
- 38:11Speaker 4: Legends of Golf and hit a shot that was going
- 38:14Speaker 4: to fly off the green and it hit a rake
- 38:20Speaker 4: on the butt and ricocheted back onto within like eighteen
- 38:24Speaker 4: inches of the company taps in for the birdie, and
- 38:27Speaker 4: when he recapped his round, he said, blah blah blah,
- 38:29Speaker 4: I made a short putt for birdie, and he just
- 38:31Speaker 4: went on. So they take questions and Bill raises his
- 38:35Speaker 4: hand and says, hey, I was stationed by the green
- 38:39Speaker 4: and I saw what happened. Can you can I get
- 38:41Speaker 4: your thoughts on what happened? So he looks at he
- 38:43Speaker 4: looks at Bill Schoning's tag and the media credential says
- 38:46Speaker 4: Bill On. He goes, well, let me tell you something, Bill,
- 38:49Speaker 4: He said, I was the goal. I hit the three
- 38:52Speaker 4: out of the side to hit the four, and I
- 38:54Speaker 4: decided to hit the three. I hit the three iron,
- 38:56Speaker 4: it hit the rake and it bounce back in. So
- 38:58Speaker 4: you know what I did when I got up there,
- 39:00Speaker 4: moved that rate because I would never want that to
- 39:02Speaker 4: happen to anybody else. The great Chee Chee Rodriguez. All right,
- 39:07Speaker 4: coming up, speaking of greatness, always one of our favorites
- 39:11Speaker 4: to visit with Big Shaffer, Texas women's hit basketball coach.
- 39:14Speaker 4: Next when we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
- 39:18Speaker 12: And Rick gre is just memory written on my brown
- 39:23Speaker 12: and there's nothing I can do about it now.
- 39:27Speaker 4: As we always mentioned that in the three o'clock hour,
- 39:31Speaker 4: one of our return cuts is from a true Texas legend,
- 39:34Speaker 4: and Willie Nelson, nothing I can do about it now.
- 39:38Speaker 4: That particular offering establishing his own mark certainly is a
- 39:42Speaker 4: legend in this state. Is in the native Texan from
- 39:46Speaker 4: the greater Houston area, and of course what he's doing
- 39:49Speaker 4: with the Texas women's basketball team back to back trips
- 39:52Speaker 4: to the Final four. Vick Schaeffer joins us on the
- 39:55Speaker 4: hotline right now, Hey, Vick, I appreciate you doing this.
- 39:58Speaker 4: I want to start off by asking question I've never
- 40:00Speaker 4: asked you before, but always wanted to ask you. I'm
- 40:04Speaker 4: sitting here and I'm sipping on somebody's tea, and I
- 40:06Speaker 4: always remember the when you had were talking about making
- 40:10Speaker 4: a reference to something, and then a reference would come
- 40:12Speaker 4: up to if I remember the quote, my mama's sweet tea. Uh,
- 40:16Speaker 4: what made your mom sweet tea so good?
- 40:21Speaker 1: Well, thanks again for having me on today. Yeah, I
- 40:26Speaker 1: see my stuff right now.
- 40:29Speaker 3: You know mom.
- 40:33Speaker 1: What made her tea so because she she.
- 40:39Speaker 13: We made it with real sugar and we didn't.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Have twishing near his back.
- 40:45Speaker 13: I can remember my dad sitting at the table putting
- 40:49Speaker 13: that thing sugar.
- 40:50Speaker 1: And see and he looked, and this was back when.
- 40:53Speaker 13: You know, there's a big about it causes cancer and right,
- 40:58Speaker 13: but he look at me and he got I'm a
- 41:03Speaker 13: little to me with these packages of pink sugar, I'm
- 41:07Speaker 13: putting my tea.
- 41:08Speaker 1: But he said, you're you better use that real sugar.
- 41:12Speaker 13: Of course, I was turning calories back then when I was,
- 41:17Speaker 13: you know, as fast as I could blink my eyes.
- 41:18Speaker 1: If the sugar wasn't gonna catch up to me or hurt. Uh.
- 41:23Speaker 1: And so that's technically.
- 41:26Speaker 13: Really what we haven't talked about lemonade Mama now was
- 41:33Speaker 13: real liminade. She would squeeze a half wmon at water
- 41:39Speaker 13: and then put sugar.
- 41:42Speaker 1: And I'm telling you.
- 41:43Speaker 13: That my bis manny right there doing stuff.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I love some really good lemonade.
- 41:53Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt, I love good lemonade. We haven't had
- 41:57Speaker 4: a chance a while, so I wanted to give it.
- 41:59Speaker 4: First of all, I'm to give you a chance to
- 42:01Speaker 4: update everybody on how the off season work is going
- 42:05Speaker 4: for your group, uh and and what you're expecting and
- 42:08Speaker 4: liking what you're seeing from your newbies, both your transfers
- 42:13Speaker 4: and and your freshman. So let me get an overview
- 42:17Speaker 4: from you first on what you're seeing from your group
- 42:21Speaker 4: in your off in their off season work.
- 42:25Speaker 13: They've been great, love every one of them. They are
- 42:28Speaker 13: just they work so hard and we've had great image
- 42:32Speaker 13: to them every day that working there.
- 42:36Speaker 1: You know they're working hard.
- 42:39Speaker 13: Brandon really doing a good job in there, so uh man,
- 42:44Speaker 13: I just.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Love seeing them every day. We've got a great mix
- 42:48Speaker 1: of a couple of seniors, a couple of juniors.
- 42:51Speaker 13: And uh the Sposh and of.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Course playing for their Ireland team right now. Several grades.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Is doing an internship right now, mister and so.
- 43:06Speaker 13: Here this month, and so she's kind of been doing that.
- 43:14Speaker 13: She went back home for PAGRAM overseas. She won't she
- 43:21Speaker 13: won't see him once season start. So we kind of
- 43:23Speaker 13: made that agreement with her when when when we signed her,
- 43:26Speaker 13: that would be no problem to go back home and
- 43:29Speaker 13: have a chance to spend some time with family.
- 43:31Speaker 1: And so she's there. And but we've had some some
- 43:36Speaker 1: really really good good time in the gym and in
- 43:39Speaker 1: the weight room.
- 43:39Speaker 13: But I'm excited about all of them. You know, they've
- 43:43Speaker 13: all really been been good.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Again, those freshmen are so.
- 43:50Speaker 13: Uh. Zion and Jada have been great additions of the
- 43:55Speaker 13: two that we got out of the board.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Our returners have done a great job, you know, showing
- 44:01Speaker 1: them what we do and how we do it and
- 44:03Speaker 1: setting the poem. So I really belie everybody.
- 44:07Speaker 4: Let me start with with the two you mentioned, Zia
- 44:10Speaker 4: Man and Jada Bettioco coming through the portals.
- 44:14Speaker 3: Zia.
- 44:14Speaker 4: For folks who have watched her team play and watched
- 44:18Speaker 4: SEC and even prior to that big Felt basketball, they've
- 44:21Speaker 4: seen Zion when she played for the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 44:24Speaker 3: What is it that that.
- 44:25Speaker 4: You like about her game once she got into the
- 44:27Speaker 4: portal and uh and had your interest there and and
- 44:31Speaker 4: what she brings to the party for you.
- 44:34Speaker 13: Anytime you get a kid that averaged up in the CC,
- 44:39Speaker 13: you know, you you that gets your attention.
- 44:43Speaker 1: I think the thing.
- 44:44Speaker 13: She really has a hard position that we haven't had
- 44:47Speaker 13: is she exist percentage out there and revels, but she
- 44:53Speaker 13: rebounds it because of the boards. She averaged four rebounds
- 44:57Speaker 13: a game and you know that extra peace out there
- 45:01Speaker 13: to really uh enhance what we on the boards and
- 45:06Speaker 13: so uh you know again little trophy advantage.
- 45:12Speaker 1: She can really shoot.
- 45:14Speaker 13: Uh but again the pat she's got a great mid
- 45:18Speaker 13: range as well, and so uh and Jesus, I really
- 45:24Speaker 13: enjoy her personality who she is, and of course she
- 45:28Speaker 13: works really hard too.
- 45:30Speaker 1: And then Jada, Jada, she see some.
- 45:33Speaker 13: Really good days for us, and uh again you just
- 45:37Speaker 13: you see, remember I wish I had that kid for
- 45:40Speaker 13: three or four years. And but Jada has been good,
- 45:44Speaker 13: working really hard with with let's see at the post
- 45:49Speaker 13: and uh try mid days with our trying to build some.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Again not getting too common.
- 45:57Speaker 13: I've never been uh uh, I've never been a person
- 46:03Speaker 13: that I want you to have a bunch of different moves.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I want you to have. If I come to you,
- 46:07Speaker 1: I call the number game.
- 46:09Speaker 13: I want to know that you're gonna be able to
- 46:11Speaker 13: deliver whatever that move is. I can care less and really.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Moves.
- 46:19Speaker 13: I just want to I want to move, and I
- 46:22Speaker 13: want to counter you know, the tic.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Move away, then you've got to counteract. That's really to me.
- 46:30Speaker 1: The Dame can get real complicated, if that makes sense.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Sure? Yeah.
- 46:36Speaker 1: Uh.
- 46:36Speaker 4: You know one thing I found interesting and Jada originally
- 46:39Speaker 4: being from Brampton, Ontario, which for folks who don't know,
- 46:42Speaker 4: that's in the Toronto area. That area has produced some
- 46:47Speaker 4: outstanding basketball talent for both men's and when I remember
- 46:50Speaker 4: Tristan Thompson was from there, Corey Joseph they had said
- 46:53Speaker 4: several ways on the men's side, and there's been some
- 46:56Speaker 4: really good players on both the men's and women's side
- 47:00Speaker 4: that have come from up that area. What do you
- 47:02Speaker 4: think that is about that Brampton and Toronto, Ontario area
- 47:06Speaker 4: that produces such good basketball talent.
- 47:09Speaker 13: Yeah? You know what two brothers right now that are
- 47:13Speaker 13: in the in the soccer league.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Guy, so right, uh, you know that in that part
- 47:22Speaker 1: of the country world, You know, there's there's.
- 47:27Speaker 13: Up middle coaches that these kids, you know when they're
- 47:32Speaker 13: young and.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Do a great job or trainers.
- 47:39Speaker 13: You know in that part of the You know, that's
- 47:42Speaker 13: a big thing in Canada, and so you know a
- 47:49Speaker 13: lot of attention that want to play baskets of bars
- 47:52Speaker 13: football players in the CNOL Canadian Football League. That's necessarily
- 48:04Speaker 13: for even collegiate.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Absolutely visiting with big shape here.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Let me let me get your thoughts on your freshmen
- 48:12Speaker 4: and the and and the progress they made and those
- 48:15Speaker 4: who are coming through the challenges not only being a
- 48:18Speaker 4: freshman some of course when you come through coming office season,
- 48:21Speaker 4: if they had an injury or a medical procedure or
- 48:25Speaker 4: anything like that, the.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Things that all roll into.
- 48:29Speaker 4: What a freshman has to accomplish and tries to get through.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Let me start with Amelia Holding and get your your
- 48:35Speaker 4: thoughts on your freshman from Newport, California.
- 48:38Speaker 13: Yeah, so, I'm Alia had a great post high school seasons,
- 48:45Speaker 13: got a.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Great high school season. Then she won just about award
- 48:50Speaker 1: for every event she was in.
- 48:53Speaker 13: And you know she's host to the Mama kids. Uh
- 48:59Speaker 13: and you know so uh the boy of the kids
- 49:04Speaker 13: can really shoot it. She's a basketball player like she's
- 49:07Speaker 13: really smart.
- 49:08Speaker 1: She said, competitor.
- 49:10Speaker 13: You know, that's really a competitive kid. She just looked
- 49:16Speaker 13: really really good. Again, love her competitive. She's a basketball
- 49:22Speaker 13: player like all the little kids can just they know
- 49:25Speaker 13: the game. They didn't coached a little bit.
- 49:29Speaker 1: They're all hotly killed. And so I'm uh it was yesterday.
- 49:34Speaker 13: I don't know if she missed a shot for and uh,
- 49:38Speaker 13: it's really lit it up.
- 49:41Speaker 1: And that's been that way we've gone.
- 49:43Speaker 13: Now we're in our fifth week. She gets veteran veteration
- 49:47Speaker 13: every day.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Wow, how about Lizzie's fate.
- 49:52Speaker 13: So Lizzie, uh again and just another both those kids
- 49:57Speaker 13: turned back on the same AAU team.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Uh and uh.
- 50:05Speaker 13: Uh u y b l e u yse of the
- 50:08Speaker 13: weekend and uh.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Coach and he's so prob.
- 50:14Speaker 13: He was asking about him and so, uh, you know,
- 50:18Speaker 13: those kids are really special and and Losey didn't unbelievable.
- 50:24Speaker 1: I mean again, just there they're just jim rats. You know,
- 50:28Speaker 1: they're always.
- 50:30Speaker 13: You know, we can shoot with him again because of
- 50:33Speaker 13: time constraints, sometimes we can't. Something you can't, but when
- 50:37Speaker 13: we can't, they're still here. And so you've got to
- 50:41Speaker 13: love that about him.
- 50:43Speaker 1: And you know Lousey's sten really good.
- 50:47Speaker 13: Uh again just a faller, loves to play, super competitive.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Wow, so that's a good tummer as well.
- 50:56Speaker 4: Uh you were talking about the international players earlier. Uh
- 50:59Speaker 4: that is he a tot, I guess if I'm renouncing
- 51:01Speaker 4: correctly from Luxembourg. But but played an iron g academy
- 51:05Speaker 4: about her.
- 51:06Speaker 13: Yeah, man, probody already, Uh, real physical kid, aggressive love
- 51:16Speaker 13: and she's gonna be great for us.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 51:18Speaker 13: I expect her to have a really good freshman year
- 51:22Speaker 13: just because she's body already.
- 51:26Speaker 1: She's physical still too.
- 51:30Speaker 13: And uh and uh she spend a little time with
- 51:37Speaker 13: family before the school starts, you know, so uh, she
- 51:42Speaker 13: didn't really want to leave, and uh, man, I didn't
- 51:45Speaker 13: want her to leave either, even though I'd agree with
- 51:47Speaker 13: a lot of back and uh, she's just she could
- 51:51Speaker 13: see she was getting better work.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Super competitive again.
- 51:57Speaker 13: Just these kids are many, they.
- 52:03Speaker 1: They seek competitious.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Wow.
- 52:07Speaker 4: It's good to and and we already VIC started to
- 52:10Speaker 4: find out a bit about Brandon Crittenden and Addison Bjorny
- 52:14Speaker 4: even even before last season ended, once they committed and
- 52:18Speaker 4: signed and things of that nature, and all those national accolades.
- 52:21Speaker 4: But what have you seen from those two in terms
- 52:23Speaker 4: of their preparedness for their freshman campaign.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Yeah, uh.
- 52:30Speaker 13: It is gonna be a monster. She reminds me so
- 52:34Speaker 13: much of a young lady. Uh Rakia jack Broke now long,
- 52:44Speaker 13: great frame and shooting degree and take you off the
- 52:48Speaker 13: bounce a mid range but just a big, long, long guard.
- 52:55Speaker 13: She's you can player, you know, probably three spots for
- 53:02Speaker 13: if you had to. But you know he's just really skilled.
- 53:05Speaker 13: But man, you can't get to her, you know when
- 53:08Speaker 13: she takes both the bounce and goes to the rim,
- 53:11Speaker 13: like you can't get to her. And you know, she
- 53:15Speaker 13: just she's got guard skills in a six three frame
- 53:19Speaker 13: and it ain't a skinny frame. It's a it's a
- 53:22Speaker 13: it's a great frame. And so Brie, it's just a
- 53:26Speaker 13: great kid man, as all these kids are, just a
- 53:30Speaker 13: wonderful young lady and just works her tail off. And
- 53:34Speaker 13: again she'r mind. You know when you're recruiting, when you
- 53:38Speaker 13: see kids play and you've done that, there's always somebody
- 53:42Speaker 13: that somebody reminds you of. Right and uh man, where
- 53:45Speaker 13: kid Jackson was.
- 53:48Speaker 1: When I took this job in Texas. If there was
- 53:52Speaker 1: one thing.
- 53:52Speaker 13: That would have kept in Mississippi state it was your kid, Jackson.
- 53:56Speaker 1: I did not want to leave that kid. Wow. I
- 54:00Speaker 1: knew she was gonna be so good.
- 54:02Speaker 13: I loved her and she she loved me, loved playing
- 54:05Speaker 13: for us, and she was perfect for my system. And uh,
- 54:11Speaker 13: very crittin and is very very similar skill set any body.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I mean, just a pro.
- 54:19Speaker 13: She just she's gonna be really goods coming off a
- 54:23Speaker 13: little bit of a start degree. She had a trimmed
- 54:27Speaker 13: up fat pack and trimmed up her a little bit.
- 54:29Speaker 1: She'd already had the other one done, and.
- 54:31Speaker 13: So she's really clear or had a full God us,
- 54:37Speaker 13: she's done parts of not really you know, uh not
- 54:43Speaker 13: really uh been able to kind of participate fully just yet.
- 54:48Speaker 1: We anticipate that time before the summer's over.
- 54:51Speaker 13: But she's just you know, she's doing what she can
- 54:54Speaker 13: and she getting et and and training room and all that,
- 54:59Speaker 13: and again does what she can and we love what
- 55:02Speaker 13: we've seen from her. And again a long, tall guard,
- 55:08Speaker 13: uh come play multiple positions, does a lot of the
- 55:11Speaker 13: dirty work, a lot of the work a lot of
- 55:13Speaker 13: kids won't do. And and so it's you know, we
- 55:18Speaker 13: really think it's gonna be hard to keep her off
- 55:19Speaker 13: the floor as well. So all these kids are gonna play.
- 55:24Speaker 13: They're all gonna play, some are gonna.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Start, and you know, Uh, I'm.
- 55:29Speaker 13: Excited about We're committed to them, and you don't get
- 55:33Speaker 13: other kids out of the portal that might have taken
- 55:37Speaker 13: away from their.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Development and playing time.
- 55:40Speaker 13: Uh, we are invested in them. I don't believe in them.
- 55:45Speaker 13: We believe they're gonna us and help us win.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt about Vic shapeer with us for a
- 55:51Speaker 4: few more minutes before before we let you go. I
- 55:54Speaker 4: text you last night because I wanted to get your
- 55:56Speaker 4: thoughts on this. I was really intrigued by this. Uh.
- 55:59Speaker 4: The story that beginning with next year this coming season's
- 56:02Speaker 4: NCAA Women's basketball Tournament, the top sixteen teams will be
- 56:07Speaker 4: placed in the bracket in their true ranking, regardless of
- 56:14Speaker 4: conference affiliation. So for folks who didn't know, in the past,
- 56:17Speaker 4: the top four teams in a league would be placed
- 56:20Speaker 4: in different regions to protect them from playing each other
- 56:23Speaker 4: until the final four. So last year there were four
- 56:26Speaker 4: SEC teams in the top eight. Texas was third, South Carolina, fourth, LSU, fifth,
- 56:31Speaker 4: Vanderbilt seventh. LSU was dropped down the seven Vanderbilt eight. Now,
- 56:36Speaker 4: if that happened going forward, the teams would remain where
- 56:38Speaker 4: their seeds should have them. If this looks to me,
- 56:43Speaker 4: VIC like the ones that really could be affected by
- 56:46Speaker 4: this would be the ACC, the ACC, the Big Ten,
- 56:49Speaker 4: in the Big Twelve, those were the only conferences that
- 56:52Speaker 4: had four or more teams in the field.
- 56:54Speaker 3: What's your thoughts on this?
- 56:57Speaker 13: I mean I've had to play two six these teams
- 57:00Speaker 13: in the sweet sixteen in the last two years, so
- 57:04Speaker 13: I can't affect me anymore.
- 57:06Speaker 1: I mean that's already since the team pretty early.
- 57:11Speaker 13: You know, you know, uh would it put us against somebody?
- 57:20Speaker 13: You know, say that if you can avoid it. I
- 57:24Speaker 13: don't understand why we do some of the things.
- 57:26Speaker 1: We men aren't doing this something we have to do it,
- 57:33Speaker 1: but it is what it is. I just show up,
- 57:37Speaker 1: tell me who I'm playing. We'll get ready to club.
- 57:40Speaker 13: But you know, I think the one school that's I
- 57:45Speaker 13: couldn't get to pay somebody from their conferences in the
- 57:50Speaker 13: third round sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament, I don't
- 57:54Speaker 13: think has had to do that against the team from
- 57:58Speaker 13: their own league. And so uh again, I think we're
- 58:03Speaker 13: really play is if you had to play, you know,
- 58:09Speaker 13: somebody in the Indite. You know, if you could give
- 58:14Speaker 13: God's Dad and move people around like that's you know,
- 58:18Speaker 13: because again those cities be fair rewards that are in.
- 58:23Speaker 1: The top sixteen, the top because of you know, whether
- 58:28Speaker 1: the second or whatever they did. Don't punish them.
- 58:35Speaker 9: Me what we've been doing is worked out well.
- 58:39Speaker 13: It sounds to me like they don't like it that
- 58:42Speaker 13: the SEC's had Texas and South Carolina and the final four.
- 58:48Speaker 1: I mean that's who That's who you're but it is
- 58:52Speaker 1: what it is, like.
- 58:54Speaker 13: I really haven't given it a lot.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Yes, you know, we'll try to be good whoever they
- 59:00Speaker 1: want me to play, will plut.
- 59:03Speaker 3: I agree you.
- 59:04Speaker 4: One other thing I wanted to ask you about because
- 59:06Speaker 4: because the school announced that you've got an exhibition game
- 59:10Speaker 4: coming up with Yukon that's going to be up in Connecticut,
- 59:14Speaker 4: either Harford or Store is coming up on October nineteenth,
- 59:17Speaker 4: and of course playing Yukon and you've had to play
- 59:21Speaker 4: them up there, and you've had to play them, you know,
- 59:23Speaker 4: down here in Austin and had to win over them
- 59:25Speaker 4: down here in.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Austin as well.
- 59:28Speaker 4: Can you discuss what the value of playing a program
- 59:32Speaker 4: like that and playing them on the road uh does
- 59:34Speaker 4: for your team, even though it is an exhibition game
- 59:37Speaker 4: and doesn't count in the overall standings.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Yeah, again, it's a it's an opportunity. We're going to
- 59:45Speaker 1: go up there that year, they're going to come.
- 59:46Speaker 13: Back down here the following year, and you know, we're
- 59:50Speaker 13: hoping to obviously they're going.
- 59:52Speaker 1: To hope to step out and we're going to hope
- 59:53Speaker 1: to sell out so that we can you know, make
- 59:58Speaker 1: make and and so that's what we're that's purpose game.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: We're also going to play you in Austin, play them
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: on uh I think October twenty fifth.
- 1:00:15Speaker 13: Yeah, and that uh one weekend I think football home
- 1:00:21Speaker 13: against Ole Miss on the twenty four and we're gonna
- 1:00:25Speaker 13: play the.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: Twenty fifth and at the HV Center. Uh.
- 1:00:30Speaker 7: And so.
- 1:00:32Speaker 13: Again, not an opportunity for us to make sust for
- 1:00:37Speaker 13: our kids.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: And at the same time, you.
- 1:00:40Speaker 13: Know, I get a good read on what you're doing
- 1:00:42Speaker 13: now you're doing it early in a game that it
- 1:00:45Speaker 13: doesn't hurt you.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't hurt hardcoming kids to go up
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: and play and stores can fit on the nineteenth.
- 1:00:53Speaker 13: Okay, we'll find out a little bit about our team
- 1:00:57Speaker 13: on October nineteen, but You've got a lot of time
- 1:01:00Speaker 13: to fit whatever you find out that you didn't like,
- 1:01:03Speaker 13: and whatever you like, don't get too excited about it,
- 1:01:07Speaker 13: not to worry about the next week.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: That's a great point. Hey, it's always great to visit
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: with you. I appreciate you taking the time. I know
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: we'll visit again when we could draw a little bit
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: closer on down the road. And I know you're excited
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: about football season to come and everything else as well,
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: So I appreciate you taking the time to hop on
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: with me today.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Vic.
- 1:01:26Speaker 13: Absolutely, I always appreciate you get to.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Be that chance.
- 1:01:29Speaker 13: Appreciate all you do for our sport and our game,
- 1:01:32Speaker 13: and thanks. You'll have a great day. Praise the Lord
- 1:01:35Speaker 13: and hook of horns.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: That's Big Schaeffer, Texas women's head basketball coach. More coming
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: up when we continue on thirteen Under the Zone.
- 1:01:42Speaker 7: It's the Craig Bay Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 1:01:45Speaker 7: and voice of the Texas Longheart, Crazy Craig Way.
- 1:01:51Speaker 12: Crazy Fufy, less so Lonely. I'm crazy, crazy, far Feeland
- 1:02:06Speaker 12: so blue.
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: I live.
- 1:02:16Speaker 12: You'd love me as.
- 1:02:18Speaker 14: Long as you wanted, and then someday you leave me far.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: So well, will and Nelson with his version of crazy.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: Of course, the Patsy Kline version perhaps the most well.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: Known of those versions.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: Carolin Texan Tuesday on thirteen under his own thanks Kenavic
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: Schaff for joining US Texas women's head coach.
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: And it's true.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: They are playing two exhibition games against a pair of
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: Final four teams. They've got the defending national champions that
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: who they'll play UCLA and that's going to be at
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: the HTB Center in Cedar Park. And then they've got
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: an exhibition game at Yukon. It will either be in
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: Stores or Hartford on October nineteenth. So there's a couple
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: of bigger And also they've announced they're going to play
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: Louisville in the sec ACC Challenge. That will be at
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: Moody Center, and that'll be the night after the men
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: play at Louisville in the sec ACC Challenge. It will
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: be my first trip ever to the KFC Young Center
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: in Louisville.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: I saw it.
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: Driving through Louisville. Lyndon and I are on vacation. We
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: were driving across from Saint Louis over toward the eastern
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: part of Kentucky and saw it when it through. I've
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: never called a game there. Did at the old Freedom
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: Hall once when Texas played over there, but I've never
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: never at the KFC Young Center. But that's where the
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: men will be and the women will host.
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: So is there an exclamation mark and there you're supposed
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: to be pronounced all right?
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: Yeah KFS yum with the exit yum for Spain. Right now,
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: they're closing in on beating France, knocking out the number
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: one team. They're up two nil to nothing and probably
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: counting stoppage time about ten to eleven minutes left something
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: like that, counting the stoppage time lab. But they got
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: the penalty kick goal in the first half and then
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: what scored a second one well into the second half
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: is when we were visiting with Vic Schaeffer that Spain
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: scored its second goal.
- 1:04:34Speaker 5: It was a great goal. They opened up France down
- 1:04:37Speaker 5: the right wing France's left side defense and Spain actually
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: scored a third goal was taken away for offside, same
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: exact thing being king the ball forward up the right side.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: Since that third goal was taken off the board for offside,
- 1:04:52Speaker 5: it's been all France, but Spain is not conceded yet.
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: Yeah, France has been much more aggressive, if desperate at
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: this point now because they're down probably to about ten
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: minutes left for their chances and they're down two goals
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: right now at two neil And again, the winner of
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: this will move on to the World Cup Final on
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Sunday against the winner of tomorrow's summifinal between England and Argentina.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: And is that one in Los Angeles the.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: England, No, that's in Atlanta. That's right, that's in Atlanta.
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: And then the championship is a MetLife right in the
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: meadowlands there. So Arlington, as it turned out, or as
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: they like to say, Dallas Stadium, Arlington is winding up,
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: I think, hosting more matches than any but including a
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: summi final, but they don't get the championship so anyway,
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: all right, So that's what's going on there in in
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: the World Cup. And coming up will I'll be back
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: to wrap up our number two of the program again.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: Coming up in the third hour, we talk baseball, recap
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: of the Major League Draft and Major League Baseball at
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: the All Star break.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: We'll do that with Geene Watson.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: He'll join us coming up next hour, but we'll be
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: back to wrap up hour number two here on Sports
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the IR Radio
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: app third and final hour of the program here on
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone here on this
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: Tuesday afternoon Craig Wade joined by the producer Jay Carman.
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: Coming up in a few minutes, we'll talk baseball at
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: the All Star break, kind of a mid season evaluation
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: of the big leagues, as well as the thoughts on
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: the Home Run Derby and also on the Major League Draft.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: Geene Watson is certainly eminently qualified to converse on those tops,
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: so Gino will join us coming up in just a
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: few minutes to talk about those things. Also, we'll hear
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: a little bit later on this hour from Jordan Walker
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: and from Kyle Schwarber. The two finals in the Home
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: Run Derby, Well we'll do that as well. The one
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: other thing to mention, it's now gone final in Arlington.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: Someone went in and posted the tax line socker. Wait,
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: what does that mean?
- 1:07:38Speaker 3: Holy cow? The French are done.
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: The number one team knocked out, shut out in the
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: World Cup by Spain. You've talked about Spain's goalie being
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: just amazing throughout this term or what he's conceded. One
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: goal they've given up.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: Though, just the one it was against Belgium the first half.
- 1:08:00Speaker 5: It's not just their goal. I mean they have just
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: they made defense, hounded, hounded, high pressure, high possession. At
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: one point in this game they had about sixty percent possession.
- 1:08:09Speaker 5: It finished fifty one forty nine. But Spain had the
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: possession until they got up to Now.
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, really, and it's done for em Buppe and
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: for France at least in terms of winning the thing.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: They do have one more match play. I talked about
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: this in the first out of the program. They do
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: have a third place match, if that matters to you.
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: I don't know where's the third place game being played.
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: I think Miami, Okay, all right, so there'll be a
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: third place game on Saturday. France, we know, will be
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: in it, and they'll play the loser of the matchup
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: between England and Argentina. You know, if it is in Miami,
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: and if and if England beats Argentina, you're gonna have
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: landel See playing perhaps his final World Cup game in
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: the stadium where he plays in the MLS, right.
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: In Ah, I believe.
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: So.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: Actually they're they're playing free in the larger venue aren't
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: they they're not playing.
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: Where Where was it inter Miami that the MLS team.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: Plays, right, that's a twenty seven thousand seat right stadium
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: right the third Place New Stadium.
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: This is at hard Rock right exactly, so that's where
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: that's where that would be.
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: Okay, I'm sorry, Craig, I only know what is Miami
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: Stadium now, it's a seconds to keep all straight.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: It's not.
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: Yeah, it's Miami State at least at least it's in Miami.
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: You got what FIFA calls Dallas Stadium in Arlington. You
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: know so, but Spain wins, Spain win. I guess they
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: would like to say as they do. I was trying
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: to explain the plural singulars to Linda about that England
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: advance you.
- 1:10:01Speaker 6: Know, not England advances, No.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: No Spain advance. And you said, why is that? When
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: you think about it, you'd say the Cowboys advance. You
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: wouldn't say advance is Cowboys advance Dallas? You'd say Dallas advances,
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: which you would say Cowboys advance.
- 1:10:19Speaker 6: That's where I get confused, because I would think of
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: England like Dallas.
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: Well, anybody would get confused if you said anytime cowboys
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: advance so.
- 1:10:26Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, the post season advance to ca't coon Yeah
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: right exactly. So yeah, Spain are moving on as they
- 1:10:38Speaker 5: would like to say. Spain are moving on to the finals.
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: And they won one right twenty ten when they had
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: David Milla Mila, I think that's their one World Cup
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: title was in twenty ten. I think they won.
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: Yep, that was one in South Africa, wasn't it. It
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: was with the with the Jabu lonnie ball.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, which.
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: Was flying everywhere like knuckleball.
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: Right exactly. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: But it's Panya emerged triumphant and they'll have a chance
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: to win their second one when they go. Of course,
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: you know, England's only won one in their history nineteen
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: sixty six when they hosted the immortal Bobby Moffatt leading
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: the English and they won over what was then known
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: as West Germany because it was you know, the Cold
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: War division of Germany into East Germany and West Germany
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: and East Germany being the Communist state and West Germany
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: being the Democratic Republic, and West Germany played England in
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: the World Cup Final at Wembley in nineteen sixty six
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: and it went extra time in the final, and England
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: scored two goals in the extra time in the overtime
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: because they don't play sudden death, you just play an
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: extra thirty minutes and they won. They scored two goals
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: during that time. They won four two, So that's their one.
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: That's England's won. Spain is won one. Twenty ten. Argentina
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: has won im do it?
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Is it three that they won?
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: Our research departments on it, yep three?
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: I knew they'd won in eighty six when Maridona and
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: and then and then they went seventy eight? Was it
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: they won when they beat the Dutch in Buenos Ayris, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: when they were hosting, and then of course they won
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: the last World Cup. So we'll see, we'll see if
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: Messi and I know a lot of folks were looking
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: forward to perhaps seeing Messi versus I buppy to see
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: h to see Argentina against France won't happen.
- 1:12:48Speaker 13: Now the.
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: France, we'll have a different, different final than the last time.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: Well, Argentina against France will happen if it happens for
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: third place, So maybe there's something useful out of the
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: third place match there.
- 1:13:01Speaker 6: I still have third place matches above the summer League.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: I do too.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I do too, you know, And I know third
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: place matches. I went through this whole thing about the
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: NCAA basketball tournament in the first hour of the program
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: about the third place you know, they used to have
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: a third place game in the NFL.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: They did.
- 1:13:19Speaker 6: That seems so inconceivable to me.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: They actually had it, And it started off with a
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: very altruistic purpose. This was in the days. It happened
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: during the decade when the NFL and the AFL were
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: in existence, because this didn't happen until the AFL came
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: along in the NFL for a couple of reasons. One
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: the biggest reason was for the player's pension fund, that
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: the proceeds would benefit the player's pension fund, and two
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: for increased television exposures. They had this battle with the
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: AFL going on in the decade of the sixties. Had
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: a game originally officially titled the burd Bel Benefit Bowl
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: and what it was that Burt Bell had been the
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: NFL Commissionero had passed away and Pete Rozelle took over
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: in nineteen sixty and it became better known as the
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: Playoff Bowl. And by the way, that's what we call
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: our third place game in the fantasy league is the
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: playoff Bowl. That's what that is.
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: I think my dad's league calls it the toilet Bowl. Okay, oh,
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: that's something else. Actually, that's something you could refer to that.
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: That's the consolation bracket in a high points contest.
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Okay, well, this is a consolation game, or it was.
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: It was a third place game, and it matched the
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: runners up. And I have to put it this way
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: runners up because the first seven years, I think of
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: the way it was structured, the runners up from the
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: Eastern Conference in the Western Conference in the NFL.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: Okay, so.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: From nineteen sixty through nineteen sixty six, they didn't have
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: playoff games in the NFL, lest two teams tied in
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: a division. The Packers and Colts tied in sixty five
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: and had a playoff that went two overtimes and the
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Packers won to go on and start a string of
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: winning three straight NFL titles under Lombardi sixty five to
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: sixty seven. But in the first seven seasons nineteen sixty,
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: sixty one, sixty two, sixty three, sixty four, sixty five,
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: and sixty six, the first seven years all they had
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: was Eastern Conference in Western Conference in a playoff game,
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: and the two winners would meet in the NFL Championship game.
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: The two runner ups would meet in this Burt Belt
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: Benefit Bowl, which like I said, became known as the
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: Playoff Bowl. So the runner ups in these would play.
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: And the first three years it was won by the
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: twight Lions because they were the runner up to the
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: Packers all three of those years, sixty sixty one and
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: sixty two when Green Bay was winning the West and
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: really getting cranked up under Lombardi, and they beat I
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: think the Eagles, they beat the Steelers, I think anyway,
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: they won the first three. The Packers had to play
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: in it after the sixty three season when they lost out.
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: The Bears ended up winning the NFL title and they
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: played in it. The Packers did in back to back
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: years sixty three and sixty four. Sixty three season they
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: beat Cleveland at at sixty four they lost to Saint Louis.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: The Cardinals actually finished second Cardinal Football Saint Louis Cardinal Football.
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: Ben Lombardi had enough of that thing. He used to
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: say of it, it's ahinky DNK game played in a
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: hinky DNK town by hinky DNK teams. That's what he
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: called it. All the players like this was hinky dink me.
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: The game was played in Miami. They played it in
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: the Orange Bowl. There was no NFL team in Miami
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: at the time. There wasn't even one in the AFL
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: until sixty six when the Dolphins game as an expansion.
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: But the NFL played it all the way through nineteen
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: sixty nine, the last year before the merger made an
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: NFC in AFC. So you should know that the most
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: decorated teams of the Playoff Bowl, the most successful teams
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: were the Detroit Lions in the Los Angeles Rams, and
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: the Cowboys. The Cowboys went they in that whole thing
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: of being next year's champions and all that kind of stuff,
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: won a couple of them, and they also lost one.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: Trivia question. The cowboys first ever postseason game was nineteen
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: sixty five. It was the Playoff Bowl and they lost
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: to the Baltimore Colts, and that was their first ever
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: postseason game. The NFL later decided the last one was
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: played in nineteen sixty nine. The Rams beat the Cowboys
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: thirty one to nothing. It was the last one the
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: NFL later decided that those games would only count as exhibitions.
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: So if you look in an NFL record manual, you
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: might fin a little separate category, but they're classified now
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: as exhibitions. They're not even classified as a postseason game anymore.
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: Much Unlike like I said, the NCAA basketball tournament still
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: counts the third place game as a final four game
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: because it took place on Final four weekend in that city,
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: in that arena, in Bob Bradley's record, Bill Bradley, Bill Bradley, Yep, yep, absolutely.
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: Bob Radley was the US soccer manager.
- 1:18:25Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: Bill Bradley, the former outstanding great player in College of Princeton,
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: played for years with the Knicks, part of two NBACHA
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: and then was a senator for your ran for president
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: and one time Bill Bradley did. But yeah, they actually
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: still in the nca record books count that as a
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: final four game even though it was a third place game.
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: All right, they don't play for third place in Major
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: League Baseball. They play for winning it and getting to
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: the World Series and winning that. Who's gonna do that.
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: We're gonna talk with Geene Watson to talks and baseball
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: coming up next year on thirteen under the zone.
- 1:18:58Speaker 9: If you expect to win, don't.
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: Put it on.
- 1:19:06Speaker 3: You've got the tal.
- 1:19:07Speaker 9: Ace in the hole.
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: Well in the four o'clock how we always say we
- 1:19:12Speaker 4: bump back with our ace in the hole. There we
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: we have George Strait music. But when it comes to baseball,
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: our ace in the hole is none other than Gene Watson,
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: the UH front office man from the Chicago White Sox,
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: who has been called both an ace in the hole
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: in just an a hole, right sometimes you know?
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 1:19:37Speaker 8: That's exactly right, more more more times the ladder than
- 1:19:39Speaker 8: the other.
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: So on, Hey, it's great to visit with you again.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: I wanted to catch up. I mean, obviously I'm coming
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: off vacation, but you're coming off the draft.
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: We're at the All Star break.
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: It just seemed like a great convergence to visit about
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: a lot of things before we get to the draft.
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: Let's let's let's kind of work backward a little bit.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: First of all, your thoughts on the home run derby
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: last night. Did you like the changed format and the
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: excitement it seemed to generate? And you've talked at length
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: in the past about what a exciting young talent.
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: Jordan Walker is.
- 1:20:13Speaker 9: I really did love it.
- 1:20:14Speaker 8: I loved it for Meuni Miracami, especially because he's coming
- 1:20:18Speaker 8: off in an injury and for the fans globally to
- 1:20:22Speaker 8: be able to see him swing the bat in the
- 1:20:25Speaker 8: home run derby.
- 1:20:26Speaker 9: I thought that was great.
- 1:20:27Speaker 8: And had there been a timer on it, he wouldn't
- 1:20:29Speaker 8: have been able to do it coming off the injury.
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: It just wouldn't have been something that he physically could
- 1:20:34Speaker 8: have done. So we loved it as an organization because
- 1:20:38Speaker 8: he got to get some extra swings in, get his
- 1:20:40Speaker 8: rhythm and timing back coming back from an injury. But
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: my gosh, Jordan Walker, I'm so happy for that young
- 1:20:46Speaker 8: man and his family. He made more in the home
- 1:20:49Speaker 8: run derby by winning than he will all year long
- 1:20:53Speaker 8: in his salary with the Cardinals. And this is a
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: guy that a couple of years ago, you know, a
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: lot of teams could have had him was not playing
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: well and it was sent back at triple A. And
- 1:21:04Speaker 8: I know it's just a home run derby, but anytime
- 1:21:06Speaker 8: you can gain some personal momentum in your career and
- 1:21:10Speaker 8: put yourself on the radar like he did last night,
- 1:21:12Speaker 8: it's certainly great for the game and certainly great for
- 1:21:14Speaker 8: the player, and I'm so happy for him.
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: Do you think also that this is really poignant given
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: what the storm clouds on the horizon about the possibility
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: of a work stoppage and a new collective bargain and
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: gram all of that kind of stuff is out there,
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: and yet here's a guy who's making in the Major
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: League Baseball world peanuts in terms of a salary at
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: seven hundred ninety nine thousand, four hundred dollars, and he
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: gets a million dollars for winning the home run derby.
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: It's kind of a nice poetic thing for him to
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: be able to get that right, especially in this day
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: in time of what we're talking about about labor and
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: money and all that stuff.
- 1:21:52Speaker 9: It really is.
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: It's such a great thing for a young man like
- 1:21:55Speaker 8: him on a lot of levels to be able to
- 1:21:57Speaker 8: win it in the exposure it brings to him. The
- 1:21:59Speaker 8: car Arginals have had a great year so far. They've
- 1:22:01Speaker 8: had a lot of young players that have stepped back
- 1:22:04Speaker 8: up and done a good job, and so just a
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: great event. I love the new format, which was basically
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: the old format. It gives the fans a little more
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: time to get to know the players, and it's just
- 1:22:15Speaker 8: it's just better all around for everybody participating.
- 1:22:18Speaker 4: Uh, gino, Let's let's talk about the draft. And I
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: know you were very very busy as well, and in
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: looking at what your your team and your organization did,
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: I saw a lot of really good comments about your
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: second round pick, Cole pro sec I guess and uh,
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: is it Rock Chilowski the shortstop? You know, I want
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: to give you a chance to talk about the guys
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: you got.
- 1:22:48Speaker 9: Well, we're so excited about Rock Chilowski.
- 1:22:51Speaker 8: It really came down to him the college shortstop from
- 1:22:54Speaker 8: UCLA versus Grady Emerson, the high school shortstop from Fort
- 1:22:58Speaker 8: Worth Christian High School. Who's going to be just a
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: tremendous talent. But at the end of the day, with
- 1:23:03Speaker 8: where our major league team is right now and really
- 1:23:07Speaker 8: the unexpected surge that we have in twenty twenty six,
- 1:23:10Speaker 8: Rocks timetable to the major leagues just fits a little
- 1:23:13Speaker 8: bit more.
- 1:23:14Speaker 9: He's a tremendous leader.
- 1:23:16Speaker 8: The best line I've ever heard about his defense is
- 1:23:18Speaker 8: that he's an arrogant defender because he does it so
- 1:23:22Speaker 8: easy at shortstop and just a quality human being. His
- 1:23:25Speaker 8: father's a scout with the Cincinnati Reds. He was raised
- 1:23:29Speaker 8: in the game, and so we're super excited about him.
- 1:23:31Speaker 8: And then at thirty four, we took land and told me,
- 1:23:34Speaker 8: you might remember that last name, the son of Jim
- 1:23:37Speaker 8: Tomy out of Nazareth Academy in suburban Chicago.
- 1:23:40Speaker 9: Jim works for us as a special advisor.
- 1:23:42Speaker 8: And Landon is a left handed hitting shortstop that has
- 1:23:46Speaker 8: some sneaky power for a guy that's about five foot ten.
- 1:23:50Speaker 8: He's a plus runner. He creates a lot of havoc
- 1:23:52Speaker 8: on the base paths, and he's the guy that's going
- 1:23:54Speaker 8: to be.
- 1:23:54Speaker 9: Able to move all over the diamond.
- 1:23:56Speaker 8: And then Cole pro second one of the top left
- 1:23:59Speaker 8: handed hitters in high school ranks this year.
- 1:24:02Speaker 9: And so we're super excited about all of our picks.
- 1:24:04Speaker 8: We we've got a we've got a wonderful room full
- 1:24:07Speaker 8: of a lot of super intelligent, smart baseball men, uh
- 1:24:11Speaker 8: and a lot of super quality X major league players,
- 1:24:15Speaker 8: and it just makes for a fun environment.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: If you never leave a stone unturned when you're when
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: you're you know, perusing the possibility of a prospect, and
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: you ask some hard questions, how difficult is that conversation
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: with Jim tell me about Landing about oh.
- 1:24:30Speaker 8: Many today, I mean even today. You know, it's like, hey,
- 1:24:34Speaker 8: you know, people, I've got to be able to tell
- 1:24:37Speaker 8: you the truth. And Jim, you know, Jim and Landing,
- 1:24:41Speaker 8: it's a very unique relationship. The relationship with the White
- 1:24:44Speaker 8: Sox organization is super unique and where a lot of
- 1:24:47Speaker 8: organizations would shy away from the situation. That's what makes
- 1:24:51Speaker 8: this one even more special is that Jim is so
- 1:24:53Speaker 8: understanding how hard.
- 1:24:55Speaker 9: The game is, that everybody's got a job to do.
- 1:24:58Speaker 8: And and you know, I asked him last week, I said, hey,
- 1:25:00Speaker 8: have you asked Lando how he feels about this? And
- 1:25:04Speaker 8: he said, yeah, I have, and he wants to raise
- 1:25:06Speaker 8: a flag in Chicago. So, uh, you know, it's it's
- 1:25:08Speaker 8: a unique situation. But Jim's such a special guy and
- 1:25:12Speaker 8: Landing such a special talent that at the end of
- 1:25:15Speaker 8: the day, you take the do you take the best
- 1:25:16Speaker 8: player on the board and Landon was there for so
- 1:25:19Speaker 8: we took him.
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: You know, I could not let this pass, as painful
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: as it is to mention that you got Joey Voltchko
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: in the third round. Uh for folks, remember, yeah, that's
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: the guy who really put it to Texas in the
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: College World Series.
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: He was amazing.
- 1:25:38Speaker 13: Uh.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: Keith Morland that night working the broadcast said what he
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: did with his changeup and what he did with his
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: slider was absolutely amazing to watch.
- 1:25:50Speaker 9: Yeah, this is a special talent.
- 1:25:52Speaker 8: His his secondary pitches are so unique, and he's such
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: a competitor.
- 1:25:57Speaker 13: Uh.
- 1:25:57Speaker 8: You know, you don't ever want to put limitations on
- 1:25:59Speaker 8: the play. The players will always tell you when they're ready.
- 1:26:03Speaker 8: But you know, when you look back, you know, in
- 1:26:06Speaker 8: twenty fourteen, you know, we call a reliever up from TCU,
- 1:26:10Speaker 8: first round left hander whose name I can't believe, I
- 1:26:12Speaker 8: can't remember in October, and so you never know what's
- 1:26:16Speaker 8: going to happen. This is a super talented reliever that
- 1:26:19Speaker 8: has a chance to move quick and we were really
- 1:26:21Speaker 8: excited to get it.
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: Did the draft go?
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: I mean, there's always surprises, there's always unknowns, there's always
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: things that folks may have not expected to happen. But
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: by and large, did this draft go, not only for
- 1:26:36Speaker 4: your organization but overall in the majors?
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: Go about?
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: Like how most drafts, even though the draft has evolved
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: and become different over the past few years.
- 1:26:46Speaker 9: I wouldn't say that it did, Craig.
- 1:26:47Speaker 8: I mean, you know, the thing that's changed so much
- 1:26:50Speaker 8: about the draft is the nil money in college baseball.
- 1:26:55Speaker 8: And there's so many kids that are so high academic
- 1:26:58Speaker 8: now that are going to stand for and other places
- 1:27:02Speaker 8: Notre Dame.
- 1:27:02Speaker 9: And so you know, when the.
- 1:27:04Speaker 8: Players starts to slide down the board, and because you
- 1:27:07Speaker 8: have a slotting system and a pool in the top
- 1:27:09Speaker 8: ten rounds, as players begin to slide down the board,
- 1:27:13Speaker 8: the signability of them becomes lesser and lesser because the
- 1:27:16Speaker 8: signing bonus is going to be way less than what
- 1:27:19Speaker 8: they might get at LSU or Arkansas or University of Texas.
- 1:27:22Speaker 9: And so that's the one unique thing is that you know,
- 1:27:25Speaker 9: kids are you know a lot of.
- 1:27:27Speaker 8: Kids are going to school, and you know, I personally
- 1:27:31Speaker 8: believe that there's no better way to become a big
- 1:27:34Speaker 8: leaguer than playing baseball every day in professional baseball with
- 1:27:37Speaker 8: the development and the schedule and the travel and just
- 1:27:40Speaker 8: getting acculated in the pro game. But but college baseball
- 1:27:43Speaker 8: is bigger and better than it's ever been, and with
- 1:27:46Speaker 8: the Nile money, it's kind of leveled the playing field
- 1:27:48Speaker 8: once you get past that third round. And so college
- 1:27:52Speaker 8: baseball is going to thrive. Professional baseball is going to thrive.
- 1:27:55Speaker 8: But for the players that want to play at the
- 1:27:58Speaker 8: major league level, there's no better thing to do than
- 1:28:00Speaker 8: to sign out of high school.
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: Well, and and what you did, what you just laid
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: out there, You mentioned Stanford, you mentioned nil.
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: You think about this in this day and age, how.
- 1:28:12Speaker 13: How you know?
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: Just absolutely inconceivable?
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: Might it be to think about a couple of guys
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: who were highly decorated playing at Stanford who left for
- 1:28:22Speaker 4: an I and IL purposes and one of them is
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: on your major league roster right now, and bring Montgomery
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: and then and then the other one is that it
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: comes to mind is Timo Basera who played at Texas
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: this year that transferred in from Stanford. I mean, so
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: even a Stanford education and those guys were going to
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: finish up their degrees anyway. But a Stanford education sometimes
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: or a Notre Dame education, uh, you know, in the
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: case of a Carson tiny or some other places. Uh,
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: the the education might wind up taking the back seat.
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: If that NIL money is as attractive as it has become,
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: No question, it's.
- 1:29:01Speaker 9: Only gotten bigger.
- 1:29:02Speaker 8: I think there's going to be eventual donor fatigue with
- 1:29:06Speaker 8: all of this, which may swing it back our way.
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: I know there's been a lot of conversation in the
- 1:29:10Speaker 8: Collective Bargain agreement about high school players not being in
- 1:29:14Speaker 8: the draft, which could affect a lot of things, players
- 1:29:16Speaker 8: being able to be drafted every year in college baseball,
- 1:29:19Speaker 8: which could affect a landscape a lot. But you know,
- 1:29:23Speaker 8: it's a difficult decision. You know, my son was drafted
- 1:29:26Speaker 8: out of high school. He was raised in minor league baseball.
- 1:29:29Speaker 8: It scared the heck out of me. So every family
- 1:29:31Speaker 8: is different, every player is different, but the NIL money
- 1:29:34Speaker 8: is certainly leveled the playing field when it comes to signability.
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: Gene Watson joining us here on the program. All right,
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: let's get to the topic that eventually it'll get down
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: the road to when it's going to happen. But I
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: got a little chuckle about this, and I wanted to
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: get your thoughts on it. So Rob Manford, the commissioner
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: a Major League Baseball and the interim executive director of
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: the Player Association, Bruce Meyer, had some different views on
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: that level the field ad campaign that expressed the league's
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: desire for a salary cap, and Manford said this morning quote.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: I think when you have a difficult public issue, particularly
- 1:30:14Speaker 4: when the other side of the issue is being very
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: public about what their views are on the negotiation, I
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: think it's incumbent on us to keep our fans informed
- 1:30:22Speaker 4: of our view of the world, particularly given sometimes the
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: other side may not be completely accurate or fair in
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: terms of their recitation of what's going on. Meyer comes
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: back with a quote, I've watched over the last two
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: years how the owners the commissioner's office try to convince
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: fans and consumers of their product that the product is broken.
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: I think it's perverse case in point is leading up
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: to this All Star Game, any of us who watch
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: baseball are seeing ads not so much for the All
- 1:30:50Speaker 4: Star Game, not promoting the game, not promoting the players,
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: but promoting the league's desire for a salary cap. So
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: the two sides, obviously, I mean, this is emblematic of
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: how things are kind of widespread and for a part
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: right now aren't the genome it is.
- 1:31:04Speaker 8: And you know, the one thing I think is important
- 1:31:07Speaker 8: for both sides to recognize is that you have to
- 1:31:10Speaker 8: see the game through the eyes of the fan.
- 1:31:13Speaker 9: That's the most important thing that you can do. I
- 1:31:16Speaker 9: know it's a business.
- 1:31:17Speaker 8: I know the owners have their side, I know how
- 1:31:19Speaker 8: the players have their sides. But this is a different
- 1:31:22Speaker 8: society than it was in nineteen ninety four, and fans,
- 1:31:27Speaker 8: they have a lot of other different options. When you
- 1:31:29Speaker 8: put the WNBA and Savannah Bananas and all of the
- 1:31:33Speaker 8: World Cup and all the things that have taken the
- 1:31:36Speaker 8: country by storm this summer, you know, the entertainment dollars
- 1:31:40Speaker 8: being spread thinner than ever, and so I think it's
- 1:31:43Speaker 8: important to recognize that right now, the game is thriving.
- 1:31:47Speaker 8: Attendance is up in almost every ballpark, Viewership is up
- 1:31:51Speaker 8: in almost every market, and even in a time on
- 1:31:54Speaker 8: a national basis where they've spread the viewership around from
- 1:31:59Speaker 8: Netflix another Apple TV viewership is up. And so I
- 1:32:04Speaker 8: think it's important to recognize that we have a really,
- 1:32:07Speaker 8: really good thing going and both sides should recognize that.
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: And I know they do, and I know they're trying
- 1:32:12Speaker 8: very hard to reach a resolution, and hopefully they'll make
- 1:32:15Speaker 8: that happen.
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: Let me get your thoughts here kind of a mid
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: season evaluation, and I just run through this very quickly.
- 1:32:21Speaker 4: In the American League at the All Star break, the
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: Rays are up three games on the Yankees the Red
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: Sox by the way of one nine in a row,
- 1:32:32Speaker 4: and that's pulled them within ten games first. In the
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: Central your ball club, the White Sox tied for first
- 1:32:38Speaker 4: with the Guardians, up three games on the Twins, six
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: and a half on the Tigers. In the West, the
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: Rangers up a game and a half on the Mariners
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: and three on the Astros. On that first of all,
- 1:32:48Speaker 4: your thoughts on the American League? Is there any of
- 1:32:52Speaker 4: the debate that your ball club is the biggest surprise
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: in all of Major League Baseball this season?
- 1:32:57Speaker 9: No question, And it's a testimony.
- 1:33:00Speaker 8: I mean, look at Oklahoma at the collegiate level and
- 1:33:02Speaker 8: what they were able to do because of culture and
- 1:33:05Speaker 8: team and that's really been the driving force of us.
- 1:33:08Speaker 8: I mean, this team in twenty twenty six, they don't
- 1:33:11Speaker 8: know anything about the twenty twenty four team that lost
- 1:33:13Speaker 8: more games in the history of baseball. You know, they
- 1:33:16Speaker 8: just know that they love to play for each other,
- 1:33:18Speaker 8: play with each other, and have a love for the game.
- 1:33:21Speaker 8: And that's really been when you inject and you feed
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: a lot of energy and a lot of talent or roster,
- 1:33:26Speaker 8: thanks can turn around quickly. We have a long way
- 1:33:29Speaker 8: to go when it comes to winning a world championship
- 1:33:31Speaker 8: and competing with the likes of the Dodgers and the
- 1:33:34Speaker 8: Yankees and teams like that.
- 1:33:35Speaker 9: But we're going to continue to push and feed the
- 1:33:38Speaker 9: machine and do what we can do.
- 1:33:39Speaker 8: But I think the interesting part about the American League
- 1:33:42Speaker 8: is that that's second wild card and the Red Sox
- 1:33:45Speaker 8: getting hot and some of these teams that have gotten
- 1:33:47Speaker 8: healthy and started to play well. Most of the teams
- 1:33:50Speaker 8: that I've spoken to in the last twenty four hours
- 1:33:53Speaker 8: in preparation for the deadline are one of two things.
- 1:33:56Speaker 9: We're not tapping out.
- 1:33:58Speaker 8: We're going to keep going, or we're going to evaluate
- 1:34:01Speaker 8: the first seven to ten day, ten games out of
- 1:34:04Speaker 8: the break and then make a decision. And there are
- 1:34:06Speaker 8: going to be some markets that are sitting there three
- 1:34:08Speaker 8: and four games out of the wild card and their
- 1:34:10Speaker 8: front offices and they just say, you know what, we
- 1:34:12Speaker 8: don't have a chance to win a World championship. That's
- 1:34:15Speaker 8: our goal to do it, and the only way to
- 1:34:16Speaker 8: do it is to multiply offfic some of the talent
- 1:34:19Speaker 8: we have at the major league level.
- 1:34:21Speaker 9: And if you go that route, you.
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: Can set your organization up better for the next two
- 1:34:25Speaker 8: to three to five years, and if you try to
- 1:34:27Speaker 8: hope to get in on the wild card this year.
- 1:34:30Speaker 9: And not do it, or get in and get eliminated
- 1:34:32Speaker 9: right away.
- 1:34:33Speaker 8: So there's gonna be a lot of teams in the
- 1:34:34Speaker 8: American League that have a lot of really tough decisions
- 1:34:37Speaker 8: when it gets to August.
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: Third in the National League, the Braves are up two
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: games and that's stumbling down on the stretch for the
- 1:34:43Speaker 4: All Star Break.
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: They're up two games on the Phillies, four on the Marlins.
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: In the Central the Brewers are up five on the
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: Cubs Cardinals, next back at eight and a half in
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: the West, despite being swept at home to stagger in
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: to the All Star Break, the Dodgers are still up
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: eleven and a half on the Diamondbacks twelve and a
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: half on the pottery.
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: How about your thoughts on the National League.
- 1:35:02Speaker 8: I think we all know the Dodgers are not only
- 1:35:04Speaker 8: the clear favorite in the National League, but a clear
- 1:35:06Speaker 8: favorite to probably win their third straight World Championship. The
- 1:35:10Speaker 8: Milwaukee Brewers are super, super talented, and I think a
- 1:35:13Speaker 8: lot of what dictates the National League is who's going
- 1:35:17Speaker 8: to push in with their prospects to improve their major
- 1:35:20Speaker 8: league club. I look for Atlanta to be super aggressive
- 1:35:23Speaker 8: at the deadline, and Philadelphia kind of knows who they
- 1:35:26Speaker 8: are as a team. They're in a lot of ways
- 1:35:29Speaker 8: like Milwaukee and the Dodgers, they're wishing a way to
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: get to October. But I think Atlanta, because they've gotten healthy,
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: because they're so super talented offensively, I think that they're
- 1:35:39Speaker 8: the team that could push in to go get some pitching.
- 1:35:41Speaker 8: But the problem is, the more teams stay close in
- 1:35:44Speaker 8: the next two weeks, the smaller the market's going to
- 1:35:47Speaker 8: be to go out and acquire that pitching. It's definitely
- 1:35:50Speaker 8: a seller's market right now, and so you've got to
- 1:35:53Speaker 8: be willing to give up some really high, high octane
- 1:35:55Speaker 8: talent if you want to improve your club this year
- 1:35:57Speaker 8: at the deadline.
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to get your talks in the
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: All Star Game.
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: I know you've been many, many, many many times, uh
- 1:36:04Speaker 4: and and I know you've enjoyed it a great deal.
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: What do you look for in an All Star Game
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: when you whether you're in the ballpark or or at
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: home watching, what do you look.
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: For when you watch an All Star Game?
- 1:36:16Speaker 8: Well, certainly the best players want to play the best
- 1:36:21Speaker 8: on the biggest stage, and and with the younger guys
- 1:36:24Speaker 8: you can get some of that. I mean, I get
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: really excited about you know, Muni Mercami and him being
- 1:36:29Speaker 8: in the game. Named Miguel Vargas who we acquired from
- 1:36:31Speaker 8: the Dodgers, who went through so much in the last
- 1:36:35Speaker 8: two years to get to this All Star Game. Well,
- 1:36:37Speaker 8: what's it look like for him coming out of it?
- 1:36:39Speaker 8: What's it going to do for him as a leader?
- 1:36:41Speaker 8: You know, is he going to carry on and be
- 1:36:43Speaker 8: a be a perennial All Star every year? Or is
- 1:36:45Speaker 8: this a one time thing?
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: And a guy like.
- 1:36:47Speaker 8: Tristan Peters for us, who's just been an incredible addition
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: to our organization from Tampa Bay over the winner to
- 1:36:54Speaker 8: make that All Star Game, Like how players come out
- 1:36:57Speaker 8: of the game, and and and so much much has learned.
- 1:37:01Speaker 8: I mean, I've heard so many stories about players going
- 1:37:05Speaker 8: into the game not knowing what to expect and coming
- 1:37:08Speaker 8: out of it with as much information from a development standpoint,
- 1:37:12Speaker 8: and what it takes to really stay at the major
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: league level just from being around other players that are
- 1:37:17Speaker 8: just as good as them, are better and so for that, that's.
- 1:37:19Speaker 9: What it is for me is evaluating what it looks
- 1:37:21Speaker 9: like coming out.
- 1:37:22Speaker 8: But we all know that the guys that really really
- 1:37:25Speaker 8: love to play love to play the very best against
- 1:37:28Speaker 8: the best, and so that's that's something to pay attention
- 1:37:30Speaker 8: to tonight.
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: And we'll certainly look forward to it.
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: Gino, great to visit with you again, and we'll pick
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: it up next week and do our weekly conversation next week.
- 1:37:38Speaker 9: Thanks for the time, all right, Craig, thanks so much,
- 1:37:40Speaker 9: you guys, take care of you.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Bet.
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: That's Geen Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office,
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: All Star preview recap of the draft and kind of
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: a mid season evaluation of Major League Baseball.
- 1:37:50Speaker 6: By the way, Brandon Finnigan was the picture he was thinking.
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: Brandon finn again. There you go, Gene, Brandon Finnigan. That's right, Yeah,
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: I remember Brandon Finnig. A good picture. Out standing pitcher
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: as well. All Right, we have more coming up here
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: on thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: Back to the Craig Way Show.
- 1:38:07Speaker 7: Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: Zone to eight one five three zero followed by your message.
- 1:38:14Speaker 7: Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: Here on a Texan Tuesday, that a little old man
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: from Texas z Z top thanks to Geene Watson joining
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: us on the program. And he was talking about that
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: home run Derby and a guy like Jordan Walker who teams.
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: He said, any number of teams could have had him
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: at that point. And as evidenced by the fact he's
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: yearly salary this year, he is quote unquote only I
- 1:38:46Speaker 4: say it in baseball vernacular, seven.
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: Hundred ninety nine, four hundred dollars. And he won a
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: million bucks last night.
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: So what did it mean to Jordan Walker to win
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: this home run derby, to do it in Philadelphia, to
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: be able to get past Kyle Schwarbur, and to win
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: that million dollar prize.
- 1:39:03Speaker 10: I can't even describe how it means to win it.
- 1:39:07Speaker 10: There's a lot of a lot of swings, a lot
- 1:39:09Speaker 10: of pressure. But I think I just had fun no
- 1:39:14Speaker 10: matter what, like every round else, having a good time.
- 1:39:16Speaker 10: You know, as a kid, I grew up my favorite
- 1:39:18Speaker 10: thing to do playing baseball is in the home runs.
- 1:39:20Speaker 10: So when a competition is, you know, dedicated to doing.
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: It, I'm gonna have fun doing it.
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: Uh We hearn him in the first time of the program.
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: Give a lot of credit to his batting practice pitcher
- 1:39:32Speaker 4: because I don't. I think we become more aware of
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: it in recent home run derbys. How important it is
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: to have a really good batting practice pitcher, a guy
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: you work with, a guy you feel comfortable who can
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: give it to you in the spot and at the
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: speed that you need to have a legitimate shot with
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: your swing to knock it out for a home run.
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: And so he discussed the importance of the batting practice pitcher.
- 1:40:01Speaker 4: Uh Climbinger terran, I guess it is.
- 1:40:05Speaker 10: I mean, I don't think if y'all know, throwing VP
- 1:40:07Speaker 10: is not as easy as it looks, and he made
- 1:40:09Speaker 10: it look easy. I've been with KT what three years now, Yeah, so,
- 1:40:15Speaker 10: and I've always been like that, this VP's money and
- 1:40:17Speaker 10: every time not in his BP group, I'm a little upset,
- 1:40:19Speaker 10: But yeah, I'm glad to you know, have him, don't
- 1:40:23Speaker 10: be just some really un believing VP. And as much
- 1:40:27Speaker 10: as like, you know, as much pressure as I was feeling,
- 1:40:29Speaker 10: I can imagine he was nervous as well.
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: But he overcame that, I mean like overcame him really well.
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: He did a really good job.
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: And also to his credit, Jordan Walker said he hoped
- 1:40:41Speaker 4: that his accomplishment will can will in some way inspiring
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: continue to help the initiatives and efforts to get young
- 1:40:51Speaker 4: African American and minority players more.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: Involved in baseball than what we've seen in the past.
- 1:40:56Speaker 6: Yeah, it's nice.
- 1:40:58Speaker 5: It's been nice to go on into and see a
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: lot of the minority baseball players either that I you know,
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: from all the way up in the majors, down to
- 1:41:06Speaker 5: guys that maybe whose careers I cover. When I was
- 1:41:09Speaker 5: broadcasting in the North Woods League, posting about it and
- 1:41:12Speaker 5: reposting that particular quote from Jordan Walker.
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: Who did you say you texted me when I was
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: sitting at that Cardinals Diamondbacks game a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: There was somebody that was playing in the game that
- 1:41:24Speaker 4: you called in the north Woods League.
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: That's right, Lou James Groover, who was going by Gino
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: Groover at the time. Okay, at the time it was
- 1:41:31Speaker 5: a summer where he was transferring from Charlotte to Miami.
- 1:41:35Speaker 5: After that next season at Miami, he was drafted in
- 1:41:37Speaker 5: the second round or maybe the third round by the
- 1:41:39Speaker 5: Diamondbacks and he's been playing platooning at first base for
- 1:41:42Speaker 5: them and doing a nice job.
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, and made the Biggs Kyle Schwarber had to
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: be disappointed. His third shot looked to be his best
- 1:41:48Speaker 4: shot to win it, and in front of his own
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: home fans who were clearly in favor of him. As
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: was pointed out by Jacob First, they were booing anybody
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: other than Bryce Harper, who's going up be you know,
- 1:42:03Speaker 4: they were going they were booing every other guy and
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: h Schobert was was asked about the crowd and how
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: supportive they were.
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: Did they even exceed his expectations? It was unbelievable.
- 1:42:18Speaker 15: I mean, I was saying from pitch one where I
- 1:42:22Speaker 15: felt like I was just going too hard, trying way
- 1:42:24Speaker 15: too hard because I could just I wanted to go
- 1:42:26Speaker 15: get it and I wanted the do it, you know,
- 1:42:29Speaker 15: and I was like, man, talking to yourself here, guy,
- 1:42:31Speaker 15: I just got to slow it down here because it's
- 1:42:33Speaker 15: you know, it's rowdy, and you feel it.
- 1:42:36Speaker 3: You feed off that. So uh, you know, it felt
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: like it kind of got easier.
- 1:42:40Speaker 15: You know, it got louder as we went, but it
- 1:42:42Speaker 15: felt like it got easier to kind of team it
- 1:42:44Speaker 15: once we kept going forward.
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: All right, all right, So there it is and your
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: home run Derby champion Jordan Walker we'll be back to
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: wrap up today's edition of the program, coming up here
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: on thirteen under the Zone
