- 4:23Speaker 3: Today. I'm sitting down with Lindsay Haran.
- 4:25Speaker 2: She is a pro soccer player also with the US
- 4:28Speaker 2: women's national team.
- 4:29Speaker 3: How are we doing?
- 4:31Speaker 1: I am doing great? How are you?
- 4:32Speaker 2: I'm so good. I have a surprise for you. Okay, right,
- 4:38Speaker 2: I like to really jump in with a bang. Okay,
- 4:40Speaker 2: So I have a question from a former teammate of yours,
- 4:43Speaker 2: and the question is who is your favorite former player
- 4:47Speaker 2: that you played with who's really funny, pretty, And I'll
- 4:51Speaker 2: go it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It's just like not fair to just put it in
- 4:56Speaker 1: in that form because there's just so many, many pretty
- 5:00Speaker 1: funny favorites. I don't think it's Kelly, You're I mean,
- 5:08Speaker 1: this is going to be a hard one you.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Have, But you're right.
- 5:10Speaker 2: You have a lot of pretty fellow teammates past and present.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I have a lot that are in my head right now.
- 5:15Speaker 1: But I don't want to just like Sam because if
- 5:17Speaker 1: I say the wrong one, like, they're just going to
- 5:19Speaker 1: get upset.
- 5:20Speaker 3: That's awkward.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I'll tell you if this person won't get upset, all.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Right, give me a name drop.
- 5:27Speaker 2: It creaks, oh creeks for the win.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Wow.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Wow, she's gonna be elated that that's where your head
- 5:35Speaker 3: went on this.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Easy.
- 5:39Speaker 2: A Pastordal guest on the show and a friend of mine,
- 5:43Speaker 2: I'm happy and humbled that I have the opportunity.
- 5:47Speaker 3: To now sit down with a dear friend of hers.
- 5:50Speaker 2: You are in France right now, you are playing where
- 5:55Speaker 2: you started your pro career.
- 5:58Speaker 3: How does it feel to be back?
- 6:00Speaker 2: I hate when I say the words across the pond
- 6:02Speaker 2: it was about to come out over you can say now.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Across the pond works. No, it's it's been honestly incredible.
- 6:12Speaker 1: You know, I never really thought I would be back
- 6:15Speaker 1: here after going back to the US and after my
- 6:18Speaker 1: first experience, but here I am. It's definitely a whole
- 6:22Speaker 1: new experience. Leone is incredible. I love living here, I
- 6:26Speaker 1: love playing here. We're doing really well this season and
- 6:29Speaker 1: currently in the semi final Champions League and we're top
- 6:33Speaker 1: of the table in league play as well. So yeah,
- 6:36Speaker 1: it's it's really exciting.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Top of the table. What a phrase. I appreciate what
- 6:41Speaker 2: you said about. I never really thought that i'd be
- 6:44Speaker 2: back here, especially after my first experience. Talk to me
- 6:47Speaker 2: a little bit about that first experience. Deciding to forego
- 6:52Speaker 2: going to college and head over to France to play professional.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it was again one of the more difficult decisions
- 7:01Speaker 1: of my life, if not the most difficult. Obviously. I
- 7:04Speaker 1: went at age eighteen to a new culture and new environment,
- 7:08Speaker 1: a professional league, which is just jumping from high school
- 7:13Speaker 1: to doing that is just it's obviously different in self,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I think for me when I look back now and
- 7:19Speaker 1: I reflect on all these years, and I obviously don't
- 7:22Speaker 1: regret anything. I was really proud of myself from making
- 7:25Speaker 1: that decision at such a young age and like actually
- 7:27Speaker 1: fulfilling what I wanted to do, and part of that
- 7:30Speaker 1: decision was to ultimately make the women's national team, and
- 7:34Speaker 1: I thought that was my pathway and that was my route.
- 7:37Speaker 1: So I'm obviously very thankful that it worked out for me.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But I think it was kind of the work that
- 7:42Speaker 1: I put in and all the different things that I
- 7:45Speaker 1: went through while it was over there, because it was
- 7:47Speaker 1: really hard, just to say the least. But here I am.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You know, I'm I'm playing on the US one's national
- 7:53Speaker 1: team for ten plus years, and for me, I look
- 7:56Speaker 1: back on that decision, I'm like this, it was all
- 7:59Speaker 1: worth it, even though it was such a struggle in
- 8:01Speaker 1: such a difficult period of time.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Yeah, understandably so, I mean, to be that far away
- 8:06Speaker 2: from your friends and family at such a young age.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You were the first American female player to sign a
- 8:11Speaker 2: professional contract straight out of high school, it had to
- 8:15Speaker 2: be difficult both emotionally and then of course physically, the
- 8:18Speaker 2: demands of not only you know, going through the ringer
- 8:22Speaker 2: day in and day out with practice, but then also
- 8:25Speaker 2: the physical demands are just working that hard.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah. I think I think for me it was just
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, you're an eighteen year old that's in high
- 8:33Speaker 1: school and then you jump and you're going straight into
- 8:36Speaker 1: a professional life, like that's it's just it's so bizarre.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It's such a different landscape. And it's like, you know,
- 8:43Speaker 1: when you're playing club with your you know, some of
- 8:46Speaker 1: your best friends. You know at Colorado Rush where I was,
- 8:49Speaker 1: it's like it's so exciting every every single day it's happy,
- 8:53Speaker 1: it's you're enjoying and whatnot. And you go into the
- 8:56Speaker 1: professional landscape and it's like you're fighting for a spot.
- 8:58Speaker 1: You're fighting for like this is a job. Like you
- 9:01Speaker 1: show up and it is a job, and obviously it's
- 9:04Speaker 1: what you make of it. And every day I look
- 9:07Speaker 1: at what I do and I'm like, I'm so happy
- 9:09Speaker 1: and it's joy and all these things. But at the
- 9:12Speaker 1: very beginning, it kind of hits you that, like this,
- 9:14Speaker 1: this is a job, like people, it's not just like
- 9:18Speaker 1: flowers and butterflies and what people think professional sports is like.
- 9:22Speaker 1: So I think that was the that was the difference
- 9:25Speaker 1: for me, and I also I had to learn a
- 9:27Speaker 1: lot about my body and what it took to be
- 9:31Speaker 1: a professional athlete. I think before I obviously I was
- 9:34Speaker 1: training three to four times a day at club, like
- 9:37Speaker 1: with boys, with girls, with older players, et cetera, and
- 9:40Speaker 1: I could, you know, eat, do whatever I want to,
- 9:43Speaker 1: and you go into the professional world that it's like
- 9:45Speaker 1: you're training one time a day and maybe some lifts,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but like you're just getting ready for the game over
- 9:51Speaker 1: the weekend. So there was a lot of learning that
- 9:53Speaker 1: I had to go through, which was a difficult process
- 9:55Speaker 1: as well.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and especially because I feel as though at eighteen,
- 10:00Speaker 2: your relationship with your body is like in such a
- 10:04Speaker 2: state of flux and like you're learning about yourself and
- 10:08Speaker 2: there's just so it's so intricate. So to then be
- 10:12Speaker 2: using your body for your profession and have other people
- 10:17Speaker 2: weighing in on how you treat your body, what you
- 10:19Speaker 2: do with your body, how your body looks like, no
- 10:22Speaker 2: matter your age, that's hard, but especially at that point.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I think again, when I look back, there are
- 10:30Speaker 1: just so many things that I wish I had known
- 10:33Speaker 1: or had any knowledge of, especially with like the nutrition
- 10:39Speaker 1: part or just preparation for being a professional athlete. I
- 10:44Speaker 1: think obviously you learn over the course of time with
- 10:46Speaker 1: your body what it needs, like your metabolism and all
- 10:49Speaker 1: these things. But I think my jump from you know
- 10:52Speaker 1: what I said before I was training through to four
- 10:54Speaker 1: times a day, I was burning so many calories. I
- 10:57Speaker 1: was doing so much and working so hard to going
- 11:00Speaker 1: to a professional life and turning one time a day,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and then having to realize like what I could and
- 11:05Speaker 1: couldn't put in my body, and then on top of it,
- 11:09Speaker 1: having the French culture that isn't So what's the best
- 11:14Speaker 1: word I could say nice about about that part of
- 11:18Speaker 1: that part of the profession. I think that's what probably
- 11:21Speaker 1: made it the most difficult part being over there and
- 11:24Speaker 1: playing and going through that.
- 11:26Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean you've spoken openly about kind of
- 11:30Speaker 2: the hurdles no pun intended, that you encountered when you
- 11:34Speaker 2: started playing over in France, interactions you had with coaching
- 11:39Speaker 2: staff commenting on your body, making you feel as though
- 11:43Speaker 2: you weren't okay as you were despite being one of,
- 11:47Speaker 2: if not the top performer on the team.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, it's it's crazy because you know, sometimes
- 11:54Speaker 1: I'm like so open to talking about it, and then
- 11:57Speaker 1: sometimes it's still like hits a wound and it and
- 12:00Speaker 1: it's hard. And especially when I see other players, and
- 12:04Speaker 1: you know, especially other women that go through this on
- 12:07Speaker 1: a daily basis in sport, I think it's really hard
- 12:09Speaker 1: because obviously we have a standard that we have to
- 12:11Speaker 1: hold in a level like being a professional athlete, being ready,
- 12:14Speaker 1: being prepared, and you know, you always want to be
- 12:18Speaker 1: at your best wit like you want to be you
- 12:21Speaker 1: want to feel good when you're playing. And so there's
- 12:24Speaker 1: an aspect to that which I completely understand. But there's
- 12:28Speaker 1: a way of doing it, and there's a way of
- 12:30Speaker 1: making the player feel comfortable speaking about it and putting
- 12:34Speaker 1: them in the best place possible. I remember I had
- 12:36Speaker 1: a conversation with you know, Don Scott's she's massive in
- 12:42Speaker 1: the women's game now. She worked with my US women's
- 12:45Speaker 1: national team and and there was a point of time
- 12:48Speaker 1: where I felt like I wasn't the fittest that I
- 12:52Speaker 1: could be, and she helped me where she was just
- 12:55Speaker 1: like okay, like can we get some more lean muscle mass,
- 12:58Speaker 1: Like can we switch a few things here nutritionally? Can
- 13:01Speaker 1: we do a few more things in the gym like X,
- 13:05Speaker 1: Y and Z. But she made it so comfortable for
- 13:07Speaker 1: me to speak about it where I knew like maybe
- 13:10Speaker 1: it was I needed to lose a few pounds and
- 13:13Speaker 1: I would hit my you know, best weight, my best
- 13:15Speaker 1: playing weight and things like this. I think we should
- 13:18Speaker 1: be more comfortable speaking about that, but it's so difficult
- 13:20Speaker 1: with women and the way that they did it at
- 13:24Speaker 1: PhD in France. It was just a complete opposite. It
- 13:28Speaker 1: was so shameful and so so hard on such a
- 13:33Speaker 1: young individual that's not from there, you know. And so
- 13:39Speaker 1: I battle with it because I'm like, how do you
- 13:40Speaker 1: speak to someone about this when maybe they do need help,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but in the best way possible when it's an eighteen
- 13:46Speaker 1: year old coming from America, you know. So I could
- 13:49Speaker 1: go on rants about it.
- 13:50Speaker 3: But no, I get it and I can really sympathize
- 13:53Speaker 3: with it.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I mean, I am far from the size of women
- 13:57Speaker 2: that you see in a majority conventional advertising, especially when
- 14:01Speaker 2: it comes to sport or in traditional advertising.
- 14:04Speaker 3: When it comes to running, running is my sport.
- 14:07Speaker 2: It's how I identify as an athlete, and so it's.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Difficult when you feel good in.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Your body, but there is marketing or media or individuals
- 14:18Speaker 2: out there that lead you to believe that you're doing
- 14:21Speaker 2: something wrong just because you don't look like the popular athlete.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Right And this is this is hard in our time
- 14:28Speaker 1: of day because you see that everywhere, you know, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: I think that's it's really important to you know, remember
- 14:34Speaker 1: that we're not all the same. And I think that's
- 14:36Speaker 1: what like has gotten me through that time to now
- 14:40Speaker 1: is like there are people and brands and you know,
- 14:46Speaker 1: spokesmen that are are fighting for this thought process because,
- 14:50Speaker 1: like you said, you look at social media, you look
- 14:52Speaker 1: at all these ads, you look at certain things where
- 14:55Speaker 1: you're just like, that's who I should be, that's who
- 14:57Speaker 1: I should look like. But then it's like, no, my
- 14:59Speaker 1: body's going to be different to the person next to
- 15:01Speaker 1: me on the field, and it's whatever is going to
- 15:04Speaker 1: make me feel best. And like we just spoke about before,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I was one of the highest performing players at that time,
- 15:11Speaker 1: but still it wasn't good enough. But yeah, it's uh,
- 15:15Speaker 1: it's it's wild.
- 15:16Speaker 3: Yeah, it is wild.
- 15:18Speaker 2: And I like what you are putting an emphasis on
- 15:22Speaker 2: was it was about how you wanted to feel and
- 15:25Speaker 2: for you not so much about quote unquote the number
- 15:28Speaker 2: on the scale. Sure, you had an assumption between a
- 15:31Speaker 2: number on a scale and you know how you felt
- 15:33Speaker 2: your best, But I'm sure at the time it wasn't like, oh,
- 15:37Speaker 2: if I'm not that number, then I'm not okay. It's like, no, like,
- 15:40Speaker 2: how do I want to feel in my body so
- 15:41Speaker 2: that I can perform in a way that makes me
- 15:43Speaker 2: feel proud, right, exactly, entirely, entirely, so, so I appreciate
- 15:49Speaker 2: you opening up about that, especially because, like I said,
- 15:51Speaker 2: I think it's something that's so relatable for so many women.
- 15:54Speaker 2: And you mentioned the buzzword brands. I do think that
- 15:58Speaker 2: it's exciting to see more brands giving airtimes showing specifically
- 16:04Speaker 2: women of all shapes, of all sizes, of all abilities
- 16:09Speaker 2: within their marketing. I mean, I was in Paris last week,
- 16:12Speaker 2: and I know that you're an Adidas athlete, and when
- 16:14Speaker 2: they revealed the Olympic kits, it was really awesome to
- 16:19Speaker 2: see all different types of athletes representing their countries. Right.
- 16:24Speaker 2: There were loads of different paralympians, some that could walk,
- 16:28Speaker 2: some that couldn't, you know, larger set bodies, smaller set bodies, tall, short,
- 16:34Speaker 2: all different ethnicities and backgrounds, right, And so it feels
- 16:37Speaker 2: good as a woman who didn't once see individuals that
- 16:43Speaker 2: looked like her in conventional media, to see brands like
- 16:46Speaker 2: Adidas getting into this space and really wanting her to
- 16:49Speaker 2: know that there are all types of people in this
- 16:52Speaker 2: world and each one of them can be an athlete.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you just said it perfectly. But I
- 16:59Speaker 1: do think like Adidas has been on the forefront of that.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I've noticed like such a massive change over the past,
- 17:05Speaker 1: like even since I, you know, first came to France.
- 17:08Speaker 1: When I see what the brand has done, especially for women,
- 17:11Speaker 1: but in general, you know, showing so many different athletes,
- 17:15Speaker 1: so many different people, making it so inclusive. And I
- 17:19Speaker 1: think that's the first thing I noticed when I go,
- 17:21Speaker 1: you know, I go shopping on the site, if I
- 17:24Speaker 1: I'm looking for, you know, clothes or whatever, I see
- 17:27Speaker 1: so many different, you know, types of bodies and and people.
- 17:30Speaker 1: And I think that is just you know, it's just
- 17:33Speaker 1: like a welcoming feeling to like what we were talking
- 17:36Speaker 1: about before. But it's so cool to hear, you know
- 17:40Speaker 1: how you know, the reveal was in Paris and things
- 17:43Speaker 1: like this, like that's what that's where we should be
- 17:46Speaker 1: and that's how it should be. And yeah, that that
- 17:49Speaker 1: just it makes me happy.
- 17:51Speaker 3: It makes me happy too. What year did you sign
- 17:53Speaker 3: with A didas once?
- 17:55Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, I can't like this.
- 17:57Speaker 3: I don't remember my life Befa's athlete.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I've been with Adida since I was eighteen. I guess
- 18:03Speaker 1: it was like right when I was turning eighteen and
- 18:06Speaker 1: I'm twenty nine, So.
- 18:08Speaker 2: It's been a lot had like a brand believe in
- 18:11Speaker 2: you from a young age and not only believe in
- 18:14Speaker 2: you then, but then also stand by you as you
- 18:17Speaker 2: continued on this journey toward you know, the evolution of
- 18:21Speaker 2: your potential.
- 18:22Speaker 3: What does that make you feel?
- 18:24Speaker 1: Like, Oh, it's honestly, it's so amazing. I think again,
- 18:30Speaker 1: it was the first brand that like really showed that
- 18:33Speaker 1: they cared about me. Again, you're putting not a lot
- 18:36Speaker 1: of risk, but like you're putting investment into a young
- 18:39Speaker 1: individual that you're hoping will reach her potential. And I
- 18:42Speaker 1: think that's really big from such a big brand. I
- 18:46Speaker 1: think at the time, Adidas USA didn't have a lot
- 18:49Speaker 1: of women's soccer players, and I think for me to
- 18:52Speaker 1: go to France, like the visibility isn't, you know, as high,
- 18:56Speaker 1: but obviously they hope that I'm then on the national
- 18:59Speaker 1: team and not so I think for the brand to
- 19:02Speaker 1: actually invest in me and to stay invested in me
- 19:04Speaker 1: and this this entire time, it's just like it's remarkable
- 19:08Speaker 1: and I appreciate them so much and everything that that
- 19:11Speaker 1: they've continued to do and and you know, like we've
- 19:14Speaker 1: talked about before. Adidas was the one that put out
- 19:17Speaker 1: the platform for me to speak on you know, what
- 19:19Speaker 1: happened to me when I first went to France, Like
- 19:21Speaker 1: that's how that first came out, and we're very you know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: welcoming for me to speak about that and very open,
- 19:30Speaker 1: and that was that was really meaningful for me because
- 19:35Speaker 1: I didn't know if that story would ever be shared,
- 19:37Speaker 1: and it actually was, and it was through Adidas. So
- 19:40Speaker 1: I think for me, I'm very grateful that that happened because,
- 19:44Speaker 1: like you said, it reaches a lot of a lot
- 19:47Speaker 1: of females that have maybe gone through the same thing,
- 19:49Speaker 1: and it did, and I've had so many people who
- 19:51Speaker 1: speak to me about it because of that. So again
- 19:54Speaker 1: that's it's it's really cool.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Was it scary for you at first to open up
- 20:00Speaker 2: about that.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Yeah, it was very scary. I think you always just
- 20:05Speaker 1: it's just like something you don't love talking about, or
- 20:08Speaker 1: especially before, you don't love talking about it because it
- 20:10Speaker 1: is it's such a hard subject. Like I still think
- 20:13Speaker 1: it's such a hard subject. It's even hard for me
- 20:15Speaker 1: to like give advice on it because everyone goes through
- 20:19Speaker 1: something different. But I think just sharing your story and
- 20:22Speaker 1: knowing that, like someone else has gone through that or
- 20:25Speaker 1: been through you know, hell because of you know, words
- 20:28Speaker 1: that were said or people or whatever expectation standards. I
- 20:33Speaker 1: think there's comfort in that, and so I think that's
- 20:36Speaker 1: mainly what my story did. And obviously it also shows
- 20:40Speaker 1: where I came after that, like I'm always I'm playing
- 20:43Speaker 1: for the U s Wan's national team, I'm the captain,
- 20:45Speaker 1: I'm playing some of the best football in my life,
- 20:47Speaker 1: and like, I went through something so terrible, but you
- 20:51Speaker 1: know I was. I was strong enough to come out
- 20:53Speaker 1: of it, and I also had a support system around
- 20:55Speaker 1: me to help me through that, because again, there are
- 20:58Speaker 1: times that you want to quit there You're like what
- 21:00Speaker 1: am I doing? And I'm sure every individual that's gone
- 21:04Speaker 1: through that is, you know, thinking the same.
- 21:06Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, when you have a strong why, you
- 21:09Speaker 2: are capable of navigating things that otherwise without that why
- 21:14Speaker 2: could break you your why At the time, your eyes
- 21:18Speaker 2: set on a US women's national team. Talk to me
- 21:22Speaker 2: a little bit about getting that call.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it was my first call up was actually Aligarth
- 21:31Speaker 1: Cup I can't remember. I think it was twenty twelve
- 21:36Speaker 1: in Portugal, and yeah, it was one of the best
- 21:40Speaker 1: feelings of my life. It wasn't short after I went
- 21:43Speaker 1: over to France, so I was like, oh my gosh,
- 21:45Speaker 1: Like I did it. This was it. I went to
- 21:49Speaker 1: France to get this call up. It wasn't like the
- 21:52Speaker 1: most ideal first camp of my career. I think I
- 21:56Speaker 1: was out for about like seven months after that or whatever.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But like I was able to see the standard and
- 22:01Speaker 1: the level, and I had a lot of communication with
- 22:04Speaker 1: the coach at the time, just saying like basically, you
- 22:07Speaker 1: will be here if you continue to do this, like
- 22:09Speaker 1: you will get to this point, but you need more
- 22:11Speaker 1: work and whatnot. And like once I saw the level,
- 22:14Speaker 1: once I saw that standard, I was like, I know,
- 22:16Speaker 1: I can be here if I continue to you know,
- 22:19Speaker 1: work my ass off. And it's obviously a crazy mentality
- 22:22Speaker 1: to have, but like it's it's been my goal since
- 22:26Speaker 1: I was a little kid, So I knew I could
- 22:28Speaker 1: achieve it if I if I worked my you know
- 22:30Speaker 1: what off.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Where there's a why, there's a way when you talk
- 22:35Speaker 2: about working your you know what off and you are
- 22:39Speaker 2: in this setting where now you are conventionally training you
- 22:43Speaker 2: said once a day with the goal of competing on
- 22:46Speaker 2: the weekends. What shifts after this exposure, your first exposure
- 22:51Speaker 2: to the US women's national team.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Well, at that time, I knew that my fitness was
- 22:57Speaker 1: nowhere near the level of the US team. I think
- 23:01Speaker 1: anyone can say like we were. I mean, the US
- 23:04Speaker 1: has always been the most fit team. Obviously things have
- 23:07Speaker 1: changed like since since then, and you know, so many
- 23:10Speaker 1: countries are are improving in so many levels with that
- 23:14Speaker 1: part of their game, But that was like one of
- 23:17Speaker 1: the major things. And just the speed of the game.
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's obviously a little bit different than even playing and
- 23:23Speaker 1: you know your league here, even with with POHC or leone,
- 23:27Speaker 1: international game is just a little bit different, so you
- 23:31Speaker 1: just have to be ready for that. And I think
- 23:32Speaker 1: for me it was just like even if I had
- 23:35Speaker 1: to go do fitness in the park near my apartment,
- 23:39Speaker 1: that's what I was doing. I was doing everything on
- 23:42Speaker 1: the side. I was. I was just I was working
- 23:44Speaker 1: so hard. And I think I had Tobinheath at the
- 23:47Speaker 1: time that we would stay after training and just work
- 23:49Speaker 1: on finishing and work on so many different aspects of
- 23:52Speaker 1: our game and get help from them. So yeah, it
- 23:55Speaker 1: was it was NonStop.
- 23:57Speaker 3: None stop.
- 23:58Speaker 2: So when you are working non stop training NonStop, whether
- 24:02Speaker 2: we're talking about.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Then or now. Is there a balance in your life?
- 24:06Speaker 3: And what if? So if there is balance, what does
- 24:08Speaker 3: that look like.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I'll tell you what before when I had first gone
- 24:12Speaker 1: to France, there is. I don't know if there was
- 24:15Speaker 1: necessarily balance in my life. It's funny because I always
- 24:18Speaker 1: said there was, but there wasn't. Now that I know
- 24:21Speaker 1: there is balance, I think now like the way I
- 24:25Speaker 1: look at it is obviously I have a short career
- 24:29Speaker 1: and I want to put the most I can into it.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I think there's no coincidence that I'm marrying a man
- 24:36Speaker 1: that's really invested in football as well, so because we're
- 24:40Speaker 1: just non stop talking football. But we do have such
- 24:43Speaker 1: a short career and I find time to have balance,
- 24:46Speaker 1: to have the off the field stuff. But I am
- 24:48Speaker 1: so invested and I fell in love with this game
- 24:51Speaker 1: so early on that I want to do everything I
- 24:53Speaker 1: can towards that little bit of career that I have
- 24:56Speaker 1: playing and I don't want to have any regrets or
- 25:00Speaker 1: you know, look back and be like I could have
- 25:02Speaker 1: done more. So, if I can put as much into
- 25:04Speaker 1: it as possible, like I know, I will reap the reward.
- 25:07Speaker 1: And I think That's how I first looked at, you know,
- 25:09Speaker 1: being in France in my earlier years on the national team.
- 25:13Speaker 1: But obviously as time goes on and you get older
- 25:15Speaker 1: and our bodies, you know, I know that there's a
- 25:19Speaker 1: limit in some things. I can't just do three sessions
- 25:22Speaker 1: a day and things like this, so I've had to
- 25:24Speaker 1: learn that over over time. I'm sure you can speak
- 25:27Speaker 1: to all of my coaches and high performance and they
- 25:30Speaker 1: will tell you they wanted to kill me at points
- 25:32Speaker 1: because I wouldn't get off the field or things like this.
- 25:35Speaker 1: But I just I just wanted to be better every day.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But now I think I've found a little bit more balanced.
- 25:41Speaker 1: It's easier because I have a fiance that I can
- 25:45Speaker 1: do stuff with after training and whatnot. And I have
- 25:47Speaker 1: a dog. That guy helps me a lot out of
- 25:51Speaker 1: the dog out oh, because I gotta go walk him.
- 25:55Speaker 1: I have to care to him. So it takes me
- 25:57Speaker 1: away from soccer a little bit, but it's fun. It's
- 26:00Speaker 1: just like I, I guess I didn't really need the balance,
- 26:04Speaker 1: and a lot of us do. So it's it's just
- 26:06Speaker 1: like what what one person needs to.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Another, Yeah, one hundred percent, And in your pursuit of
- 26:14Speaker 2: this next level play in the years that you have left,
- 26:18Speaker 2: you know, really going after it day in and day out,
- 26:21Speaker 2: there certainly are going to be days when you're tired.
- 26:25Speaker 3: Despite being very clear on what your goals are.
- 26:28Speaker 2: For someone who may have a goal of their own,
- 26:31Speaker 2: what do you tell them to keep them motivated on
- 26:34Speaker 2: the days where they really feel like it's getting to
- 26:38Speaker 2: be a little too much.
- 26:41Speaker 1: You know, there's so many different things that I love
- 26:44Speaker 1: thinking about. I guess for me, one of them was
- 26:47Speaker 1: always like, you know, there's someone else out there that's
- 26:51Speaker 1: like battling for that spot or for you know, whatever
- 26:54Speaker 1: dream you're trying to accomplish, Like are you going to
- 26:57Speaker 1: let them have it rather than you? Like you feel
- 27:00Speaker 1: tired today, or you feel sore or whatever, but like,
- 27:05Speaker 1: are you going to regret not doing something today because
- 27:07Speaker 1: of that feeling you just said you're too tired, I'm
- 27:10Speaker 1: going to stay on the couch. I'm going to do this,
- 27:12Speaker 1: like I'm gonna rest today. Like that always gets in
- 27:15Speaker 1: my head and I always get pissed off that like
- 27:17Speaker 1: someone's going to come in and take my spot, and
- 27:19Speaker 1: it's just it's something it's something that I always put
- 27:22Speaker 1: in my head. But I'm like, I have to do
- 27:24Speaker 1: more than that next person. And maybe there isn't that person,
- 27:29Speaker 1: but it's like I'd rather have that so that I
- 27:31Speaker 1: have that motivation. And and then my other thing is
- 27:34Speaker 1: just like like if you love what you're doing so much,
- 27:37Speaker 1: like you will you will continue to work as hard
- 27:41Speaker 1: as possible at it. And I think it's like I
- 27:44Speaker 1: always say this on when I'm giving advice or whatever,
- 27:47Speaker 1: just like, don't fall out of love with what you're doing.
- 27:50Speaker 1: And if you if you stay in that like that mindset,
- 27:53Speaker 1: like you will love working hard. You will love doing
- 27:55Speaker 1: the fitness, You'll love doing the extra trainings. Like I
- 27:58Speaker 1: know there's some players that hate training, they just love games,
- 28:00Speaker 1: and I get it, But I love training so much
- 28:03Speaker 1: because that's my preparation for the game. And I think
- 28:05Speaker 1: that's what keeps me going.
- 28:08Speaker 2: And I truly think that what I'm hearing you say
- 28:11Speaker 2: here is that the journey has truly become the destination
- 28:15Speaker 2: for you. Like you have been doing this for a
- 28:18Speaker 2: minute now, and you do it well because you enjoy
- 28:22Speaker 2: the process, right and not to you know, shade anyone
- 28:26Speaker 2: who lives for game day, but realistically, your approach is
- 28:29Speaker 2: going to be the approach that makes this sustainable for sure.
- 28:34Speaker 1: You know. That's the funny thing is like I always
- 28:36Speaker 1: fight with again, my coaches are high performance when they're like,
- 28:40Speaker 1: we need you to take just one exture rest day,
- 28:42Speaker 1: like you need a rest day, and I'm like, no,
- 28:44Speaker 1: this is my preparation for the game. And I have
- 28:46Speaker 1: to fight with them about it NonStop, and usually I lose.
- 28:50Speaker 1: But it's what you just said that is like, that
- 28:54Speaker 1: is out how my mindset works and how I look
- 28:57Speaker 1: at it.
- 28:57Speaker 3: But I love you saying maybe it's me.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Usually I lose, but realistically, are you losing if you're
- 29:04Speaker 2: giving your body what it needs exactly?
- 29:08Speaker 1: You're right?
- 29:10Speaker 3: Oh man, So what does recovery look like for you?
- 29:12Speaker 1: Typically a lot of my time I have, you know,
- 29:16Speaker 1: my Norman tech boots. I use massage as like one
- 29:19Speaker 1: of my biggest recoveries. I think a lot of people
- 29:22Speaker 1: think of a massage like, oh my gosh, you're so lucky.
- 29:25Speaker 1: You're just getting like going to a spa having a
- 29:27Speaker 1: massage like these massage is hurt, but they are like,
- 29:31Speaker 1: it's what keeps my body going. We have you know,
- 29:35Speaker 1: cryotherapy at our facility and ice bath, hot bath like
- 29:39Speaker 1: things like this, So I'm doing like whatever I possibly can.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 29:48Speaker 2: to my sponsor.
- 29:49Speaker 3: At hyper Rice.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Upgrade your warm up and recovery with the most advanced
- 29:54Speaker 2: warm up and recovery technology on the market, and that.

- 30:09Speaker 2: goes by where I'm not grabbing my hyper volt gun
- 30:12Speaker 2: before and after hard workouts and then, oh my goodness,
- 30:16Speaker 2: one of my favorite activities to do on a weeknight
- 30:19Speaker 2: for myself a nice glass of wine, grab my Norma
- 30:23Speaker 2: Tech boots and get on the couch to.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Watch some TV right now.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Admittedly I am rewatching all of the West Wing.
- 30:32Speaker 3: Ten out of ten would recommend now.
- 30:34Speaker 2: You are not the only person who can appreciate a
- 30:37Speaker 2: little bit of self care. Mother's Day is on the horizon.

- 30:44Speaker 2: Day to a mother you love. For a limited time,
- 30:48Speaker 2: you can save up to one hundred and seventy five dollars.

- 31:01Speaker 2: additional five percent off the Norma Tech and Hypervolt lines. Again,
- 31:07Speaker 2: that special code for hurdle listeners is hurdle Spring at
- 31:11Speaker 2: checkout at hyper ice dot com. Again, that's hyper ice
- 31:15Speaker 2: dot com. You were talking earlier about wanting to be
- 31:25Speaker 2: the person that gets chosen right, knowing that there are
- 31:28Speaker 2: so many people that want to be in your position,
- 31:30Speaker 2: but it's up to you to show up and show out.
- 31:34Speaker 2: How does that mentality play in with being someone who's
- 31:39Speaker 2: involved in a team sport.
- 31:40Speaker 3: What is it like for you to be part of
- 31:42Speaker 3: a team.
- 31:44Speaker 1: For me, it's like what you know every day, how
- 31:47Speaker 1: I how I approach training, how I walk into the
- 31:50Speaker 1: locker room, like, how I show up is like how
- 31:53Speaker 1: I'm showing up for the team. Like it's again we
- 31:55Speaker 1: can talk about how we said what if you're tired,
- 31:58Speaker 1: what if you feel like you need to rest day,
- 31:59Speaker 1: like whatever, Like your approach to every single training is
- 32:03Speaker 1: what the whole team is going to see, and like
- 32:06Speaker 1: what you're doing on the field of the body language
- 32:08Speaker 1: like all these things. I think that's the coolest thing
- 32:09Speaker 1: about being in a team sport is like if you
- 32:12Speaker 1: are having a rough day, if you're not feeling it whatever,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and you look at the person next to who's just like,
- 32:16Speaker 1: come on, like we got this like body language, like
- 32:20Speaker 1: just such a positive vibe and like wanting to get better.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Like that, you know, gives me motivation. So I always
- 32:28Speaker 1: I think that's how I approach like a team sport.
- 32:30Speaker 1: I think that's that's so cool that you have that ability,
- 32:34Speaker 1: because for an individual sport, like you're the one having
- 32:37Speaker 1: to continuously motivate yourself and that's really difficult. So I
- 32:40Speaker 1: think we're lucky and we should utilize that as much
- 32:44Speaker 1: as possible.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah, beyond the team aspect of it, clearly the sport
- 32:50Speaker 2: has given you many near and dear female friendships. Chat
- 32:55Speaker 2: with me a little bit about how those have impacted you.
- 32:59Speaker 2: What does having so many strong women around you regularly
- 33:03Speaker 2: do for you personally?
- 33:06Speaker 1: Oh, it's been incredible, you know. I have so many,
- 33:11Speaker 1: so many teammates, so many friends all over the world
- 33:14Speaker 1: that you know, some are so much older than me
- 33:17Speaker 1: that I've looked up to, that are veterans of the
- 33:19Speaker 1: game that are like my role models, but also are
- 33:23Speaker 1: my friends like my older sisters. I have friends that
- 33:26Speaker 1: are you know my age that we've gone through all
- 33:29Speaker 1: of the same things together and come up through the
- 33:31Speaker 1: national team together. And that's a really exciting process because
- 33:34Speaker 1: you bond like no one else goes through the same
- 33:36Speaker 1: thing as you guys are going through, so you bond
- 33:39Speaker 1: so much over that. And then you have like the
- 33:42Speaker 1: young guns coming through and that's so exciting for me
- 33:45Speaker 1: because you get to see them go through the process
- 33:47Speaker 1: that you went through at the beginning of your career
- 33:50Speaker 1: and you get to help and share your experience and
- 33:53Speaker 1: things like this. It's just like, you don't get this
- 33:55Speaker 1: anywhere else that teammate experienced exposure French like, it just
- 34:00Speaker 1: bonds you in such a different way. And yeah, it's
- 34:03Speaker 1: it's truly incredible.
- 34:05Speaker 2: And it's not just these friendships and that you know
- 34:08Speaker 2: on the field that you're interacting, you're all also fighting
- 34:12Speaker 2: for people to recognize you and give you, you know,
- 34:16Speaker 2: the props that you so dearly deserve.
- 34:21Speaker 3: I know that the US women's national team, they.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Generated more revenue than the US men's national team from
- 34:27Speaker 2: twenty sixteen through twenty eighteen and beyond. So where are
- 34:30Speaker 2: we standing right now in the fight for equal pay?
- 34:34Speaker 1: Well, obviously our national team has been on the forefront
- 34:37Speaker 1: of that, and I think you look back at all
- 34:41Speaker 1: the members of the team and what we fought for
- 34:43Speaker 1: and where we are at now, I think it's truly
- 34:46Speaker 1: so incredible. So I think in terms of the US
- 34:49Speaker 1: women's national team, it's gotten to such a such a
- 34:51Speaker 1: great place. I think we are still fighting in the
- 34:54Speaker 1: NBUSL and I know that's it's difficult for me to
- 34:57Speaker 1: say because I'm not there right now, but in terms
- 34:59Speaker 1: of contracts, in terms of salaries or whatever, they're improving,
- 35:03Speaker 1: the salary caps going up, and I think it needs
- 35:05Speaker 1: to continue like that because if you still compare and
- 35:08Speaker 1: in the leagues in the US, it's not entirely the same,
- 35:12Speaker 1: but you see it progressively getting better. So I think
- 35:15Speaker 1: it's it's getting there. And I think you can also see,
- 35:17Speaker 1: you know, what we spoke about earlier with the brands,
- 35:20Speaker 1: Like you see so many of my teammates all over
- 35:22Speaker 1: the place, and that's you know, like commercials, billboards, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 1: if we talk about Adidas where in the Adidas stores,
- 35:29Speaker 1: Like I get pictures all the time showing my face
- 35:32Speaker 1: or trends face and things like this, and it's just
- 35:35Speaker 1: that's such a really cool thing because before it was
- 35:37Speaker 1: not like this, you know, and I think it's so special,
- 35:40Speaker 1: but it's what we deserve and what these players deserve
- 35:43Speaker 1: for working so hard every single day. It's doing the
- 35:45Speaker 1: same things as our male counterparts.
- 35:48Speaker 2: It would be I would be remiss if I didn't
- 35:52Speaker 2: acknowledge that clearly women's sports right now is really on
- 35:56Speaker 2: the opposite.
- 35:57Speaker 3: It's having a moment.
- 35:58Speaker 2: I couldn't be more amped as someone who identifies as
- 36:01Speaker 2: an athlete in her own right, but obviously not on
- 36:04Speaker 2: the level that you are. With that said, how does
- 36:07Speaker 2: it feel to be a woman in sport right now
- 36:09Speaker 2: watching what's happening within the media and the rally behind
- 36:13Speaker 2: women to get the attention and again the pay that
- 36:16Speaker 2: they deserve.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I mean, it's it's incredible. And I'm an athlete.
- 36:22Speaker 1: I love watching all sports. I love watching men, I
- 36:24Speaker 1: love watching women, et cetera, et cetera. And it's like
- 36:27Speaker 1: it's not like I'm like throwing out the men now.
- 36:29Speaker 1: It's just like we're actually getting the exposure that we deserve.
- 36:32Speaker 1: And that's over so many different sports. You know. I
- 36:35Speaker 1: turn on Sports Center and we're talking about the women's
- 36:37Speaker 1: basketball more than more than I've ever heard of my life,
- 36:41Speaker 1: and NonStop, like NonStop, and I was just like, this
- 36:45Speaker 1: is this is incredible and even like for me, like
- 36:48Speaker 1: I didn't have very much knowledge on just like the
- 36:51Speaker 1: college women's game for basketball, and now it was just
- 36:55Speaker 1: like a NonStop thing where I like could not take
- 36:58Speaker 1: my eyes off the TV. And luckily I was in
- 37:00Speaker 1: the US at the time that the tournament was going
- 37:03Speaker 1: on and I could actually watch. I was so thankful
- 37:05Speaker 1: because otherwise it's three am my time. But you know that,
- 37:10Speaker 1: and I'm a woman and like that's a cool thing.
- 37:12Speaker 1: So now you think about all the men that are
- 37:14Speaker 1: now seeing this as well, and it's just like they're invested.
- 37:16Speaker 1: It's it's incredible. So yeah, I again, it's how it
- 37:21Speaker 1: should be. It's how it should be, and it continues
- 37:25Speaker 1: and it needs to continue. But it is really special
- 37:28Speaker 1: to see and to be a part of that in
- 37:30Speaker 1: this you know, day and age and for everything that
- 37:33Speaker 1: we fought for before, especially with our national team, you
- 37:36Speaker 1: feel like this sense of I don't know, you know,
- 37:40Speaker 1: we did something and we helped in some way, and
- 37:42Speaker 1: now you see all this happening. It's it's really special.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, it all builds together.
- 37:48Speaker 2: One piece of the puzzle contributes to another piece of
- 37:52Speaker 2: the puzzle, and before you know it, you have like
- 37:54Speaker 2: a masterpiece in.
- 37:55Speaker 3: Front of you. And I think that there's certainly a
- 37:58Speaker 3: ways to go. Right now.
- 38:00Speaker 2: There is light being shed on issues and on individuals
- 38:04Speaker 2: and on talent that has never shown on them before,
- 38:08Speaker 2: and so together in some way through you know, different medians,
- 38:13Speaker 2: whether it's you coming out of podcast like this, me
- 38:17Speaker 2: interviewing people to get their stories out.
- 38:19Speaker 3: You know, we all have the opportunity to contribute.
- 38:21Speaker 2: And I think the thing that gives me the most
- 38:23Speaker 2: hope is in times like the tournament just now that
- 38:27Speaker 2: happened for March Madness. You see all the videos of
- 38:30Speaker 2: the young girls that are watching other women on TV,
- 38:33Speaker 2: and oh my god, I lose it every time.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so cute. It's so I saw so many
- 38:39Speaker 1: of those and it's just like wow, it's so special.
- 38:43Speaker 3: It is so special.
- 38:44Speaker 1: When I was that young girl, like I couldn't I
- 38:46Speaker 1: couldn't watch, you know, like I didn't. I didn't have
- 38:49Speaker 1: like a women's basketball player to look up too, because
- 38:52Speaker 1: I played basketball, but obviously I went or soccer. But
- 38:55Speaker 1: I was like that that's so cool for them.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 38:58Speaker 2: And that is why you are, for so many so inspirational,
- 39:03Speaker 2: right because you have set out and carved your own
- 39:05Speaker 2: path in this way that now when people think of
- 39:09Speaker 2: women's soccer in America, you're arguably one of the names
- 39:13Speaker 2: that they think of.
- 39:13Speaker 3: When I say that to you, how does that make
- 39:16Speaker 3: you feel?
- 39:18Speaker 1: It Like, it still gives me goosebumps. It's so wild.
- 39:21Speaker 1: No matter how long I play, it's hard to like
- 39:24Speaker 1: think of yourself like that. And I've had to like,
- 39:26Speaker 1: you know, really pegging into my head like this is
- 39:29Speaker 1: and it's a responsibility as well, because you know, we
- 39:32Speaker 1: talked about showing up before, but it's also like showing
- 39:35Speaker 1: up for those young athletes that are watching us girls
- 39:37Speaker 1: and boys. And I saw a little boy with my
- 39:40Speaker 1: jersey in one of the last games that I was playing,
- 39:42Speaker 1: and that, like that almost brought me into tears because
- 39:46Speaker 1: I'm just like, there's a little boy that's looking up
- 39:48Speaker 1: to me as well. So I think we've gotten to
- 39:50Speaker 1: this point, and I've gotten to this point where I'm
- 39:52Speaker 1: like I have a responsibility to show up for them
- 39:54Speaker 1: as well and to be a role model on and
- 39:56Speaker 1: off the pitch, like, obviously, I'm going to play my
- 39:58Speaker 1: game that I play on the field and not change,
- 40:01Speaker 1: you know, who I am, and hopefully that inspires you know,
- 40:04Speaker 1: the young individuals, but off the field, like I need
- 40:07Speaker 1: to give them what they deserve and show them who
- 40:09Speaker 1: I am and hopefully be a role model and being
- 40:12Speaker 1: the person I am. So that's again, it's it's such
- 40:15Speaker 1: a such a special feeling and I can't really explain it,
- 40:18Speaker 1: but yeah, it's such a cool responsibility.
- 40:21Speaker 2: As well, all because you're pursuing something that brings you
- 40:24Speaker 2: so much joy, which is truly so special. You said
- 40:27Speaker 2: the buzzwords role model. Clearly, you're a leader both on
- 40:31Speaker 2: the US women's national team and beyond that as a
- 40:34Speaker 2: captain there.
- 40:35Speaker 3: What does it mean for you to be a leader?
- 40:37Speaker 2: What do you think are important qualities to possess or
- 40:41Speaker 2: embody as you kind of step up in the forefront, you.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Know, for me, like going through this new role. Obviously
- 40:48Speaker 1: I was named the captain before the World Cup, and
- 40:53Speaker 1: it came really quick. I always just thought to myself
- 40:55Speaker 1: that I don't want to change, you know, who I am,
- 40:57Speaker 1: but also just bring out more of the leadership parts
- 41:00Speaker 1: of me that I felt like maybe we're hiding or
- 41:02Speaker 1: maybe I couldn't bring out if I wasn't the captain,
- 41:05Speaker 1: and that's not necessarily the case. I think it was
- 41:07Speaker 1: just in just a weird thing inside of me. I
- 41:11Speaker 1: think for me, it's more like again showing up every
- 41:14Speaker 1: single day and like you can't really turn off. And
- 41:18Speaker 1: again it's such a crazy responsibility, but a really special
- 41:21Speaker 1: one because everyone's looking to you. You have a huge responsibility,
- 41:25Speaker 1: and you need to keep a support system around you
- 41:27Speaker 1: to like help you through that, which I've learned very
- 41:31Speaker 1: very quickly in my national team role, but just to
- 41:34Speaker 1: keep inspiring and be a voice for everyone, I think,
- 41:38Speaker 1: especially in the team setting, like you need to be
- 41:40Speaker 1: a voice for your team and have that relationship with
- 41:43Speaker 1: your coaching staff as well and the head coach. You know,
- 41:46Speaker 1: that's massive, it's vital. But again, it's like when you're
- 41:51Speaker 1: the captain of the US w meeen's national team, it's
- 41:53Speaker 1: just so it's so big, So it's so massive, and
- 41:57Speaker 1: everyone looks to you. And I think of, you know,
- 42:00Speaker 1: the captains in the past and what they've stood for
- 42:02Speaker 1: and the things that they've they've done, but more so
- 42:05Speaker 1: just their play in general, like that's that's my responsibility.
- 42:09Speaker 3: What does Lindsay stand for.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I think I my number one thing I stand for
- 42:16Speaker 1: is to you know, no dream is too big. I
- 42:21Speaker 1: think that's the my biggest thing, is like, you could
- 42:26Speaker 1: put so much work and so much effort in and
- 42:29Speaker 1: you can achieve anything that you want to achieve. But
- 42:33Speaker 1: I also just I want to be a good person,
- 42:35Speaker 1: and I want to be inclusive, and I want to
- 42:38Speaker 1: make everyone better on and off the field and be
- 42:42Speaker 1: that person everyone looks up to and and help people
- 42:44Speaker 1: enjoy as well. I think there's so many things in there,
- 42:47Speaker 1: but again it's it's just I want to be me
- 42:51Speaker 1: and make sure everyone remains themselves and I think that's
- 42:55Speaker 1: a big part of our national team as well. It
- 42:57Speaker 1: is just like allowing that that feeling that you can
- 43:01Speaker 1: be yourself and you're comfortable in yourself. So yeah, that's
- 43:05Speaker 1: that's me.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I'm impressed with. I mean, there were a lot of
- 43:08Speaker 2: words in there, but it feels as though you're very
- 43:11Speaker 2: clear on what it is that you stand for. And
- 43:14Speaker 2: I think that someone listening to this right now may
- 43:17Speaker 2: be like, Wow, like, how did.
- 43:19Speaker 3: You get to this point where you're like so clear
- 43:21Speaker 3: on this?
- 43:22Speaker 2: So I'm going to ask you, like, did you reflect
- 43:24Speaker 2: on what it is that you stand for when you
- 43:27Speaker 2: were presented with this opportunity? Was it reflecting on where
- 43:31Speaker 2: you've come from? Like how did you dial into kind
- 43:34Speaker 2: of your personal mission statement as you're in this role?
- 43:37Speaker 1: Now? You know, it's funny. I think it didn't actually
- 43:41Speaker 1: dial into me until after the twenty nineteen World Cup.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember what age I had there. But
- 43:48Speaker 1: I started working with a a sports psychologist. His name
- 43:52Speaker 1: is Darren Treasure, and he's been so crucial for me.
- 43:56Speaker 1: And it's like these conversations happen a lot, you know,
- 43:59Speaker 1: on this object. And it wasn't necessarily just you know,
- 44:03Speaker 1: working on my mental game and how I approach every
- 44:05Speaker 1: training and game and whatever. It's just like who is Lindsay?
- 44:08Speaker 1: Like who's Lindsay as a player? Who's Lindsay as a person?
- 44:11Speaker 1: Like what do I want to be? What do I
- 44:12Speaker 1: want to still achieve? And like short term goals, long
- 44:16Speaker 1: term all of these kind of things, but like who
- 44:17Speaker 1: really is Lindsay? And diving into that was like really
- 44:21Speaker 1: hard and I remember like the exact moment I did
- 44:25Speaker 1: it and writing it down in my notebook and I
- 44:27Speaker 1: couldn't take my pen off the paper because I had
- 44:29Speaker 1: so many things to get out. And then it you know,
- 44:32Speaker 1: you read it and you look at it and you're like, wow,
- 44:34Speaker 1: this is like, this is who I want to be
- 44:36Speaker 1: and I'm not allowing myself to do all of that.
- 44:39Speaker 1: And I think so over the past five six years
- 44:43Speaker 1: that you know, I've been working and working with him,
- 44:46Speaker 1: I've really I've been able to do this and figure
- 44:50Speaker 1: out who Lindsay is and who I want to continue
- 44:53Speaker 1: to be. And that's so I encourage anyone, anyone to do. That.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Doesn't mean you have to go work with a sports
- 44:59Speaker 1: sect figure it out, but you know, those kind of
- 45:02Speaker 1: things to keep your mind going. I think that's why
- 45:05Speaker 1: I'm so comfortable in that that feeling.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Now, Yeah, I think in order to excel or dial
- 45:10Speaker 2: in on your goals at any given moment, you have
- 45:13Speaker 2: to be willing to meet yourself with where you're at,
- 45:15Speaker 2: and oftentimes that means sitting with thoughts that you haven't
- 45:19Speaker 2: given air previously. Right, So you sat down and got
- 45:23Speaker 2: really clear on who you are. And that wasn't something
- 45:27Speaker 2: that just happened in like fifteen seconds. It was like, oh, here,
- 45:29Speaker 2: I am sitting with this notebook and now I can
- 45:30Speaker 2: write down exactly who I am. It's like, no, like
- 45:33Speaker 2: you have to sit with the feelings that maybe you
- 45:35Speaker 2: haven't allowed yourself to feel, the thoughts that you haven't
- 45:39Speaker 2: allowed yourself to speak right, And in doing that and
- 45:42Speaker 2: getting uncomfortable and giving yourself that air, that grace, that space,
- 45:46Speaker 2: you then can kind of make waves forward to who
- 45:50Speaker 2: it is that you want to be and what it
- 45:51Speaker 2: is that you want to achieve.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Entirely.
- 45:55Speaker 1: If you look back at that notebook, you'll see like
- 45:57Speaker 1: some droplets where I was like crying too, and it's
- 45:59Speaker 1: like it was so cool. It was like such an
- 46:01Speaker 1: emotional thing. But I was like, anytime I look back
- 46:04Speaker 1: at on, I'm like, this is incredible.
- 46:07Speaker 2: Incredible, incredible, and it's done so much for you. Right now,
- 46:11Speaker 2: we're in an Olympic year, there's a lot going on,
- 46:15Speaker 2: and again you're playing back where your professional career started.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Talk to me a little bit about your emotional your
- 46:21Speaker 2: mental state right now as we head into such a
- 46:25Speaker 2: big summer.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Yeah, it's all over the place. Well, first off, it's
- 46:30Speaker 1: hard because you're finishing out a season here with Leon.
- 46:33Speaker 1: We have this semi final second leg left of Champions
- 46:37Speaker 1: League and then hopefully a final. So my focus is
- 46:40Speaker 1: like it's mainly on that. Obviously, you have the Olympics
- 46:43Speaker 1: in the back of your mind and there's a team
- 46:46Speaker 1: to make there and a roster to make, and I
- 46:48Speaker 1: think for me it's it's very exciting. It's back here
- 46:51Speaker 1: in France. Obviously, it's kind of my second home and
- 46:54Speaker 1: just another opportunity this summer to show who the US is.
- 47:00Speaker 1: But I think right now it's kind of like what
- 47:02Speaker 1: can I do on a daily basis and on a
- 47:04Speaker 1: daily basis with my team here in Leone to prepare
- 47:07Speaker 1: myself and hopefully make that team and hopefully go to
- 47:11Speaker 1: another Olympics.
- 47:13Speaker 2: You said there's a team to make, a roster to make.
- 47:15Speaker 2: What does that process look like for those that are unaware.
- 47:19Speaker 1: So, the Olympic roster is a lot smaller than a
- 47:21Speaker 1: World Cup roster. It's only eighteen, which means two keepers
- 47:24Speaker 1: and sixteen field players. You do have four alternates that
- 47:29Speaker 1: come but are not technically a part of the team.
- 47:32Speaker 1: It's not like the last Olympics where you can swap,
- 47:35Speaker 1: so it makes it a lot more difficult than a
- 47:38Speaker 1: twenty three man roster. So yeah, we have a camp
- 47:42Speaker 1: at the end of May and then another pre camp
- 47:45Speaker 1: prior to heading off. I'm not exactly positive when the
- 47:48Speaker 1: final roster is named, but I'm assuming it will be
- 47:52Speaker 1: a bit after this May camp coming up. So yeah,
- 47:56Speaker 1: it's exciting times, but it's difficult times because my gosh,
- 47:58Speaker 1: the depth that we have women's national team makes it
- 48:01Speaker 1: so difficult to name a name a eighteen man roster.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Yeah, entirely, and the emotions that go hand in hand
- 48:08Speaker 2: with that. Knowing that because the talent is so widespread,
- 48:13Speaker 2: you like want the best for everyone. But this goes
- 48:16Speaker 2: back to what you were saying about, like you also
- 48:19Speaker 2: wanted to be you.
- 48:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's such a hard thing to feel in
- 48:26Speaker 1: your head. Obviously, there's so many players that have been
- 48:28Speaker 1: fighting for this roster, maybe that have made the World
- 48:32Speaker 1: Cup team last year that might not make the Olympic roster.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Like that's just how it goes in it it's back
- 48:39Speaker 1: to the professional world. It's like you're fighting for a
- 48:42Speaker 1: roster and you might be fighting against a friend or
- 48:43Speaker 1: a team that you played with for a really long time,
- 48:46Speaker 1: and that's how it goes. But there's so much support
- 48:49Speaker 1: for every single one of us, and I think we
- 48:51Speaker 1: go about it in the best way possible. But the
- 48:53Speaker 1: end of the day, like, we got to do our thing,
- 48:55Speaker 1: we got to make that roster, and yeah, we will
- 48:58Speaker 1: be there for for everyone.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Yeah, talk to me about that support and how you
- 49:04Speaker 2: navigate this pressure.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Where do you lean into, who do you look to?
- 49:09Speaker 2: How are you supported as you're in pursuit of these big,
- 49:13Speaker 2: lofty goals this year.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's funny. I think a lot of
- 49:16Speaker 1: people lean into me more lately, which actually takes a
- 49:21Speaker 1: lot of the pressure off of me. How sad like
- 49:24Speaker 1: the pressure off of myself. I think, again, this is
- 49:27Speaker 1: what we talked about before. I feel like a lot
- 49:29Speaker 1: of people are coming to me for advice or things
- 49:33Speaker 1: that they're going through on a daily basis, especially with
- 49:35Speaker 1: the Women's Natural team, And it's almost like this comforting
- 49:38Speaker 1: feeling because I was there at one point and I
- 49:40Speaker 1: know what it's like and I know that experience, and
- 49:42Speaker 1: I can help as much as possible and give words
- 49:45Speaker 1: as much as possible, and it takes a bit away
- 49:47Speaker 1: from like maybe my stress or my pressure like to
- 49:50Speaker 1: perform and you know, to make the roster as well.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Obviously that that will always be there. You can't take
- 49:56Speaker 1: anything for granted. And there's you no matter who I
- 50:00Speaker 1: I am, if I'm the captain if not. You know,
- 50:02Speaker 1: I have a spot that like I need to, you know,
- 50:06Speaker 1: work my ass off for so and making sure everyone
- 50:09Speaker 1: on the team knows that this is grind time, you know.
- 50:14Speaker 1: But I obviously I have my people back home, Like
- 50:17Speaker 1: if I need, I have my fiance, I have my parents,
- 50:19Speaker 1: I have my sports hyke, Like I have a lot
- 50:21Speaker 1: of people that I lean on. I keep it a
- 50:24Speaker 1: smaller circle. But obviously, like there are those times that
- 50:30Speaker 1: you get drained and you need them and they've been
- 50:33Speaker 1: so crucial for me in my life.
- 50:34Speaker 3: So and you have to put your oxygen mask on,
- 50:36Speaker 3: you know.
- 50:37Speaker 2: Like I have a friend that's going through some really
- 50:40Speaker 2: hard stuff right now with his family and some medical stuff,
- 50:43Speaker 2: and I said to him, like, as a strong friend,
- 50:47Speaker 2: it's me, I'm the strong friend, and you're also the
- 50:49Speaker 2: strong friend. Like you need to get to a place
- 50:52Speaker 2: sometimes where you allow yourself to feel to like open
- 50:56Speaker 2: up to the different emotions that maybe you're not recognizing
- 51:01Speaker 2: because you're so busy trying to keep your shit together.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's a that is like a tough thing,
- 51:08Speaker 1: because sometimes it's really helpful, and then sometimes you're like
- 51:10Speaker 1: you're about to blow up because you have so much
- 51:12Speaker 1: in your head that you haven't allowed yourself to feel
- 51:15Speaker 1: those feelings. Like you say, so it will all come.
- 51:18Speaker 3: Out, It'll all come out.
- 51:19Speaker 2: And what I'm hearing you say also is that by
- 51:22Speaker 2: being this person that other people can lean on and
- 51:25Speaker 2: like allowing them to come to you and helping them
- 51:27Speaker 2: through their situations, it's also in turn helping you as
- 51:31Speaker 2: a leader. Yeah, it's reminding you what you're capable of.
- 51:34Speaker 2: It's reminding you where you've been. And sometimes when we're
- 51:37Speaker 2: busy going after our goals, like and we get we
- 51:40Speaker 2: get a little bit lost in the journey. And for
- 51:42Speaker 2: you to be able to be in this position now
- 51:45Speaker 2: where you can offer advice, it gives you this opportunity
- 51:47Speaker 2: to really do a lot of reflection and reminds you
- 51:50Speaker 2: candidly who the hell you are.
- 51:52Speaker 1: Yeah, no, what you said it perfectly Mike on a podcast.
- 51:57Speaker 1: My gosh, I don't have to say anymore on that.
- 52:00Speaker 2: And then I mean, in terms of support, does anything
- 52:04Speaker 2: shift with the brands you're working with in an Olympic year?
- 52:08Speaker 2: Do you have more commitments. How does that make you feel?
- 52:11Speaker 2: Talk to me a little bit about that.
- 52:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I think well, first and foremost, during a World
- 52:17Speaker 1: Cup or an Olympic gear things get a lot heavier
- 52:20Speaker 1: and with all of your brands and you know, things
- 52:23Speaker 1: that you're pulled into and things that you have to do.
- 52:26Speaker 1: But obviously that's also in turn a really great things.
- 52:30Speaker 1: It shows you know, the people that are invested in you,
- 52:33Speaker 1: the brands that are invested in you, and that's just
- 52:37Speaker 1: like amazing. This is like, this is when you should
- 52:40Speaker 1: be seen. This is when we should show some of
- 52:42Speaker 1: the best players in the world and all over the place.
- 52:45Speaker 1: And you know, it was really cool. I saw an
- 52:47Speaker 1: Adidas ad the other day, you know, showing women in
- 52:49Speaker 1: sport and talking about, you know, the young females that
- 52:53Speaker 1: are dropping out a sport more frequently than the young
- 52:56Speaker 1: male and and it's like then you see, you know,
- 53:00Speaker 1: a picture of a young female with you know, all
- 53:03Speaker 1: of these professional women. I think that's just it's very
- 53:06Speaker 1: inspiring to see and probably really inspiring for a young
- 53:09Speaker 1: individual to look at and see all over the social media.
- 53:13Speaker 1: So it's like it's things like this, we're around an
- 53:16Speaker 1: Olympic year, We're around a World Cup year and you
- 53:18Speaker 1: see all of these ads and brands, you know, pulling
- 53:22Speaker 1: out things like this. This is that's where it's really
- 53:24Speaker 1: special and obviously you get the most reach and people
- 53:28Speaker 1: seeing it. So yeah, this is this is big time
- 53:31Speaker 1: and it's the perfect time of the year.
- 53:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you mentioned going into energy to store and seeing
- 53:37Speaker 2: yourself obviously not the first time that's happened. Do you
- 53:41Speaker 2: remember where you were or how it felt the first
- 53:45Speaker 2: time that you saw yourself amplified in that way.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Yeah, it might have been Portland. My first time at
- 53:54Speaker 1: the Adida's headquarters in Portland, I saw a really large
- 54:00Speaker 1: picture of me on the outside and I was like,
- 54:03Speaker 1: I had no idea it was there. No one said
- 54:05Speaker 1: anything to me or whatever, but I was just like,
- 54:07Speaker 1: there's no way that's me, and I'm next to like
- 54:11Speaker 1: I think it was Damian Lillard at the time. It's
- 54:14Speaker 1: just like a massive obviously NBA star and Adidas star,
- 54:18Speaker 1: and I'm just like, I'm next to him on this
- 54:22Speaker 1: this building, Like that's insane. So that was that was
- 54:26Speaker 1: probably one of the first times.
- 54:28Speaker 3: Wild, absolutely wild.
- 54:30Speaker 2: Right now, speaking of what you see, someone comes to
- 54:33Speaker 2: your Instagram page, there's something like near four hundred thousand
- 54:37Speaker 2: followers there. They see an Adidas athlete, a professional soccer player.
- 54:41Speaker 2: But when Lindsay looks in the mirror, what is it
- 54:44Speaker 2: that Lindsay sees looking back at her.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Oh, that's such a hard question. I guess this isn't
- 54:56Speaker 1: gonna help. But I think it depends on, you know,
- 55:00Speaker 1: the day and the time. I think. Obviously a lot
- 55:03Speaker 1: of the time I'm getting ready and I'm looking at
- 55:05Speaker 1: the mirror, like I think about, you know, what I'm
- 55:08Speaker 1: about to go do and who I am. And again
- 55:11Speaker 1: it's something that I've worked on for a long time.
- 55:13Speaker 1: I usually look in the mirror and say something as
- 55:15Speaker 1: lame as it sounds, but talk about like I am
- 55:18Speaker 1: a leader, I am Lindsay heran, I am a positive
- 55:22Speaker 1: person or I am going to be positive today, like
- 55:25Speaker 1: things like this, this is who I see. And then
- 55:27Speaker 1: a lot of the time I'm like, I look at
- 55:30Speaker 1: myself and I think about that young Lindsay that you know,
- 55:35Speaker 1: was inspiring and inspired to be the person I am today,
- 55:39Speaker 1: and I think about her so often because it's it's
- 55:42Speaker 1: such a cool thing to reflect on, like thinking about
- 55:45Speaker 1: that little Lindsay that dreamt of, you know, playing professional
- 55:48Speaker 1: soccer and dreamt of playing for the US women's national
- 55:52Speaker 1: team one day. Like, that's always who I think of
- 55:54Speaker 1: when I'm like, I'm gonna go be my best for
- 55:57Speaker 1: her today.
- 55:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that's so fat and it's so special to have
- 56:02Speaker 2: dreamt about the life you're living right now. I have
- 56:06Speaker 2: this sign in my office that says, remember when you
- 56:09Speaker 2: wanted what you have right now, And it always helps
- 56:12Speaker 2: me kind of dial in and come back to self
- 56:16Speaker 2: and remember that I'm doing things now as are you
- 56:19Speaker 2: that you only dreamed about, and things as well that
- 56:22Speaker 2: you never dreamed about, right, And it's an opportunity we
- 56:25Speaker 2: have every day to continue to make that younger version
- 56:28Speaker 2: of our self proud in the process.
- 56:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it makes me emotional.
- 56:33Speaker 2: It makes me emotional too. Yeah, it makes me emotional too.
- 56:36Speaker 2: I do want to ask you. You talked about these
- 56:38Speaker 2: im statements, which I think are so powerful and certainly
- 56:41Speaker 2: a tool that I've used in the past for someone
- 56:43Speaker 2: that might be struggling with a sense of self with
- 56:47Speaker 2: feeling empowered in their body. Do you have any advice
- 56:51Speaker 2: for that person to be working on that inner dialogue
- 56:54Speaker 2: in a way that can be productive instead of detrimental.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, when I first started working on it
- 56:59Speaker 1: with my sports, it was back to like who Lindsay
- 57:03Speaker 1: is or who Lindsay wants to be, or like what
- 57:05Speaker 1: things that you want to change in that, And I
- 57:06Speaker 1: think a lot of it was like I want to
- 57:09Speaker 1: be positive every day even if I'm having a bad day.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I want to be a leader. I want to you know.
- 57:14Speaker 1: One of them was like I want to have a
- 57:16Speaker 1: not give a you know what attitude where it's like
- 57:19Speaker 1: even something goes wrong or you coach, you're screaming at
- 57:23Speaker 1: you whatever, like it's kind of like, okay, move on
- 57:25Speaker 1: to the next thing. And I'm just like this seems
- 57:28Speaker 1: so dumb, Like I'm sitting in the mirror like saying
- 57:31Speaker 1: these things to myself. But it was it's actually so
- 57:33Speaker 1: wild when you write them down. Like there was five
- 57:37Speaker 1: of them that I would write write down, and then
- 57:40Speaker 1: I go to the mirror and I actually got like
- 57:42Speaker 1: a marker. He told me to get a marker, write
- 57:44Speaker 1: him down on my mirror, and so I would sit
- 57:46Speaker 1: there and I would read them to myself and I
- 57:47Speaker 1: had to repeat him five times, and I'm like, I
- 57:49Speaker 1: can't believe this guy's making me do this, And then
- 57:53Speaker 1: the more it was happening, the more it was kind
- 57:56Speaker 1: of set in my head and it was a reminder.
- 57:57Speaker 1: So like I would go out to training and I
- 58:00Speaker 1: remember I'm like, I'm like, I was about to be
- 58:03Speaker 1: negative about something, and I said, wait, I said, I'm
- 58:06Speaker 1: going to be positive today, and I'm like, oh my god,
- 58:09Speaker 1: it's actually working. So then it was just like I
- 58:11Speaker 1: actually believed in it, and I the more and more
- 58:14Speaker 1: I thought, you know about all these you know, different
- 58:17Speaker 1: things affirmations that I'm saying, I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 58:20Speaker 1: it's actually working. And like to this day, I still
- 58:23Speaker 1: know those five affirmations that I have in my notes
- 58:26Speaker 1: are still in my notes, and sometimes they change based
- 58:29Speaker 1: on like, you know, what my goal is for that
- 58:32Speaker 1: year or things that I like. Obviously, being captain has
- 58:34Speaker 1: been a massive thing. So the leadership thing has been
- 58:37Speaker 1: been huge for me. But it's incredible. It's incredible, like
- 58:40Speaker 1: the self talk, like what it does for you, and
- 58:43Speaker 1: some people just don't truly believe in it, and I
- 58:46Speaker 1: was one of them. And I'm telling you right now
- 58:48Speaker 1: that it's it's a massive, massive thing.
- 58:50Speaker 3: Will you share some of those with us? The affirmations.
- 58:54Speaker 1: Yeah, so I am a leader was one of them.
- 58:57Speaker 1: I'm going to be positive today, I'm going to have
- 59:00Speaker 1: a not gift the attitude I'm going to enjoy and
- 59:05Speaker 1: I'm going to get better today.
- 59:07Speaker 3: So powerful, so powerful.
- 59:08Speaker 2: All right, as we wind down here the question I
- 59:11Speaker 2: end all of the episodes with right now, you have
- 59:14Speaker 2: an opportunity, as you are now to offer the Lindsay
- 59:17Speaker 2: a piece of advice during her hurdle moment. Let's bring
- 59:20Speaker 2: you back to when you moved to France. You uprooted
- 59:24Speaker 2: your life and you were.
- 59:25Speaker 3: Dealing with a climate of.
- 59:28Speaker 2: Discomfort, trying to figure out how to feel more comfortable
- 59:31Speaker 2: in your body and embrace what is to get to
- 59:33Speaker 2: where you want to be. You have an opportunity to
- 59:36Speaker 2: give that woman some advice right now, knowing what you know, Now,
- 59:39Speaker 2: what do you tell her?
- 59:42Speaker 1: I tell her, No matter what you're going through right now,
- 59:45Speaker 1: it's going to be really challenging. It's going to be
- 59:47Speaker 1: really difficult, but to dive into it and enjoy that
- 59:51Speaker 1: process because ultimately you are going to get to your goal.
- 59:55Speaker 1: You're going to be a professional on the US women's
- 59:58Speaker 1: national team, will be consistently there. So you just need
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: to get through this moment. It's one of those It's
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: one of those hurdles that you will go through in
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: your career, and there's going to be more of them.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: This is just one that you have to get.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Over, just one that you have to get over, another
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: hurdle to conquer. All Right, Before I let you go,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: you have to recommend one person that I should sit
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: down with and interview this coming season.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Who do you recommend?
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: Who would I recommend? I think I'm gonna say Mallory Pew.
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: All right, Mallory, you've been nominated. I'm so excited that
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: we were able to do this today. Lindsay, For those
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: that don't follow along with you just yet, how do
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: they keep up with you?
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: Give me your dats Instagram it's Lindsay herand ten. I
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: think I hope it's Lindsay herand Dan. It's really bad
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: that I don't know that. I don't really use Twitter anymore,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: but it's there every once in a while. But you
