- 0:02Welcome to the Daily Audio Torah. Today is September
- 0:0621st. Now let's continue our journey reading through the entire
- 0:10Bible in one year. This week we are reading from the New
- 0:14Living Translation for the Old Testament and for the New Testament.
- 0:19Deuteronomy 29:21-29.
- 0:25The Lord will separate them from all the tribes of Israel to
- 0:29pour out on them all the curses of the covenant recorded in
- 0:32this Book of Instruction. Then the generations
- 0:36to come, both your own descendants and the foreigners who come
- 0:40from distant lands, will see the devastation of the land and the diseases
- 0:44the Lord inflicts on it. They will exclaim,
- 0:50the whole land is devastated by sulfur and salt!
- 0:54It is a wasteland with nothing planted and nothing growing,
- 0:57not even a blade of grass. It is like the cities of Sodom and
- 1:01Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Lord destroyed
- 1:04in His intense anger. And all the surrounding nations
- 1:08will ask, why has the Lord done this to this land?
- 1:12Why was He so angry? And the answer will be, this happened
- 1:17because the people of the land abandoned the covenant that the Lord,
- 1:21the God of their ancestors, made with them when He brought them
- 1:25out of the land of Egypt. Instead, they turned away
- 1:29to serve and worship gods they had not known before.
- 1:32Gods that were not from the LORD. That is why
- 1:36the LORD's anger has burned against this land, bringing down on it
- 1:40every curse recorded in this book.
- 1:44In great anger and fury, the LORD uprooted His people
- 1:47from their land and banished them to another land,
- 1:50where they still live today. The LORD our God
- 1:55has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them.
- 1:58But we and our children are accountable forever for
- 2:03all that He has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the
- 2:07terms of these instructions.
- 2:13Isaiah 37:1-38:22.
- 2:17When King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes and
- 2:21put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord to pray. And he
- 2:25sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the
- 2:29court secretary, and the leading priests, all dressed
- 2:33in sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.
- 2:36They told him, This is what King Hezekiah says: This
- 2:40is a day of trouble, insult, and disgrace. It is
- 2:44like when a child is ready to be born, but the mother
- 2:47has no strength to deliver it. But perhaps the Lord your God
- 2:51has heard the Assyrian representative defying the living God and will punish
- 2:56him for his words. Oh, pray for those of us who
- 3:00are left! After King Hezekiah's officials delivered
- 3:04the king's message to Isaiah, the prophet replied, Say to your
- 3:08master, This is what the Lord says: Do not be disturbed
- 3:12by this blasphemous speech against me from the Assyrian king's messengers.
- 3:17Listen! I myself will make sure that the king will
- 3:21receive a report from Assyria telling him,
- 3:24that he is needed at home. Then I will make him want
- 3:28to return to his land, where I will have him killed with
- 3:32a sword. Meanwhile,
- 3:35the Assyrian representative left Jerusalem and
- 3:39went to consult his king who had left Lachish and was attacking Libnah.
- 3:43Soon afterward, King Sennacherib received word that King Tirhakah of
- 3:48Ethiopia was leading an army to fight against him.
- 3:52Before leaving to meet the attack, he sent this message back to Hezekiah
- 3:56in Jerusalem: This message is for King Hezekiah
- 4:00of Judah. Don't let this God you trust deceive
- 4:04you with promises that Jerusalem will not be captured by
- 4:09the king of Assyria. You know perfectly well what the kings
- 4:12of Assyria have done wherever they have gone. They have crushed
- 4:16everyone who stood in their way. Why should you be any
- 4:20different? Have the gods of other nations rescued them?
- 4:23Such nations as Gozan, Haran, Reseph,
- 4:27and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? The former kings of Assyria
- 4:32destroyed them all. What happened to the king of Hamath and the king
- 4:36of Arpad? What happened to the kings of Sepharvaim,
- 4:40Hena, and Eva?
- 4:43After Hezekiah received the letter and read it, he went up to the Lord's
- 4:47Temple and spread it out before the Lord. And Hezekiah
- 4:51prayed this prayer before the Lord: O Lord Almighty, God of
- 4:55Israel, You are enthroned between the mighty cherubim. You alone
- 4:59are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You alone
- 5:02created the heavens and the earth. Listen to me, O Lord,
- 5:06and hear. Open Your eyes, O Lord, and see.
- 5:10Listen to Sennacherib's words of defiance against the living
- 5:13God. It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed
- 5:18all these nations, just as the message says,
- 5:21and they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them.
- 5:26But of course the Assyrians could destroy them.
- 5:29They were not gods at all, only idols of wood and stone
- 5:33shaped by human hands. Now, O Lord God,
- 5:36rescue us from his power. Then, All the kingdoms
- 5:44of the earth will know that You alone, O Lord
- 5:48our God. Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent this
- 5:52message to Hezekiah: This is what the Lord, the God of
- 5:56Israel, says: This is My answer to your prayer concerning
- 6:00King Sennacherib of Assyria. This is the message that the
- 6:04Lord has spoken against him: The virgin daughter of
- 6:08Zion despises you and laughs at you. The daughter of Jerusalem
- 6:12scoffs and shakes her head as you flee.
- 6:16Whom do you think you have been insulting and ridiculing?
- 6:19Against whom did you raise your voice? At whom did you
- 6:23look in such proud condescension? It was the Holy
- 6:27One of Israel. By your messengers you have mocked
- 6:31the Lord, You have said, with my many chariots I have conquered the highest
- 6:35mountains, yes, the remotest peaks of
- 6:38Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars
- 6:42and its choicest cypress trees. I have reached
- 6:46its farthest corners and explored its deepest forests. I have
- 6:50dug wells in many a foreign land and refreshed myself
- 6:53with their water. I even stopped up the rivers of Egypt so
- 6:57that my armies could go across. But have
- 7:01you not heard? It was I, the Lord, who decided this
- 7:04long ago. Long ago I planned what I am now
- 7:08causing to happen, that you should
- 7:11crush fortified cities into heaps of rubble. That is
- 7:15why their people have so little power and are such
- 7:18easy prey for you. They are as helpless as the grass,
- 7:22as easily trampled as tender green shoots.
- 7:26They are like grass sprouting on a housetop, easily scorched
- 7:31by by the sun. But I know you well, your comings and goings and all
- 7:35you do. I know the way you have raged against me, and because of
- 7:39your arrogance against me, which I have heard for myself, I will put
- 7:43my hook in your nose and my bridle in your mouth.
- 7:47I will make you return by the road on which you came.
- 7:50Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, here is the proof that
- 7:54the Lord will protect this city from Assyria's king.
- 7:58This year you will eat only what grows up by itself,
- 8:02and next year you will eat what springs up from that. But in
- 8:05the third year you will plant crops and harvest them,
- 8:09you will tend vineyards and eat their fruit. And you who are left
- 8:13in Judah, who have escaped the ravages of the siege, will take root
- 8:17again in your own soil, and you will flourish and multiply.
- 8:22For a remnant of My people will spread out from Jerusalem, a group
- 8:26of survivors from Mount Zion. The passion of the Lord
- 8:30Almighty will make this happen. And this is what the Lord says
- 8:34about the king of Assyria: His armies will not enter
- 8:37Jerusalem to shoot their arrows. They will not
- 8:41march outside its gates with their shields and build banks of earth against its
- 8:45walls. The king will return to his own country
- 8:48by the road on which he came. He will not enter the
- 8:52city, says the Lord. For my own honor and for the sake of my servant
- 8:56David, I will defend it.
- 9:00That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp
- 9:04and killed 185,000 Assyrian troops.
- 9:08When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning,
- 9:12they found corpses everywhere. Then King Sennacherib
- 9:16of Assyria broke camp and returned to his own land.
- 9:20He went home to his capital of Nineveh and stayed there.
- 9:24One day, while he was worshipping in the temple of his god,
- 9:27Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer
- 9:31killed him with their swords. They then escaped to
- 9:34the land of Ararat, and another son,
- 9:37Esarhaddon, became the next king of Assyria.
- 9:42About that time, Hezekiah became deathly ill. And the
- 9:46prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this
- 9:51message: This is what the Lord says: Set your
- 9:54affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from
- 9:59this illness. When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face
- 10:03to the wall and prayed to the Lord: Remember, O Lord, how I have always
- 10:07tried to be faithful to you and do what is pleasing
- 10:10in your sight. Then he broke down and wept bitterly.
- 10:15Then this message came to Isaiah from the Lord: Go back
- 10:19to Hezekiah and tell him, This is what the Lord,
- 10:22the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and
- 10:26seen your tears. I will add 15 years to
- 10:30your life, and I will rescue you and this city from the king
- 10:34of Assyria. Yes, I will defend this
- 10:38city. And this is the sign that the
- 10:41Lord will give you to prove he will do as he promised: I
- 10:46will cause the sun's shadow to move 10 steps backward on
- 10:50the sundial of Ahaz. So the shadow on the sundial
- 10:54moved backward 10 steps.
- 10:57When King Hezekiah was well again, he wrote this poem about his experience:
- 11:02I said, in the prime of my life must I now enter the place of
- 11:06the dead? Am I to be robbed of my normal years? I said,
- 11:11Never again will I see the Lord God while still in the land of the
- 11:15living. Never again will I see my friends or laugh with
- 11:18those who live in this world.
- 11:22My life has been blown away like a shepherd's tent in a storm.
- 11:26It has been cut short as when a weaver cuts cloth from a loom.
- 11:30Suddenly my life was over. I waited patiently
- 11:34all night, but I was torn apart as though by lions.
- 11:38Suddenly my life was over. Delirious, I chattered
- 11:43like a swallow or a crane, and then I moaned like a mourning dove.
- 11:48My eyes grew tired of looking to heaven for help. I am in
- 11:52trouble, Lord, help me! But what could I say?
- 11:55For He Himself had sent this sickness. Now I
- 11:59will walk humbly throughout my years because of this anguish
- 12:03I have felt. Lord, your discipline
- 12:07is good, for it leads to life and health. You have restored my health
- 12:11and have allowed me to live. Yes, it was good for me to suffer this
- 12:15anguish, for you have rescued me from death and
- 12:19have forgiven all my sins.
- 12:22For the dead cannot praise you, they cannot raise their voices
- 12:26in praise. Those who go down to destruction can no longer hope.
- 12:30In Your faithfulness. Only the living can praise You
- 12:34as I do today. Each generation can make known Your
- 12:37faithfulness to the next. Think of it!
- 12:41The Lord has healed me! I will sing His praises with instruments
- 12:45every day of my life in the Temple of the
- 12:49Lord. Isaiah had said to Hezekiah's servants,
- 12:53Make an ointment from figs and spread it over the boil,
- 12:56and Hezekiah will recover. And Hezekiah had asked,
- 13:01What sign will prove that I will go to the temple of the Lord 3
- 13:04days from now.
- 13:09Galatians 6:1-18.
- 13:18Dear brothers and sisters, if another Christian is overcome by
- 13:22some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person
- 13:26back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same
- 13:30temptation yourself. Share each other's troubles and problems,
- 13:34and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you
- 13:37think you are too important to help someone in need, you are
- 13:41only fooling yourself. You are really a nobody.
- 13:45Be sure to do what you should, for then you will enjoy the
- 13:49personal satisfaction of having done your work well, and you won't
- 13:53need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each
- 13:57responsible for our own conduct.
- 14:00Those who are taught the Word of God should help their teachers by paying
- 14:04them. Don't be misled. Remember that you cannot
- 14:08ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what
- 14:13you sow. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful
- 14:16desires will harvest the consequences of decay and
- 14:21death. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest
- 14:26everlasting life from the Spirit. So don't get tired of doing
- 14:30what is good. Don't get discouraged and give up,
- 14:34for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the
- 14:38appropriate time. Whenever we have the opportunity, we should
- 14:41do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and
- 14:45sisters. Notice what large letters I use As I write
- 14:49these closing words in my own handwriting, those who are trying
- 14:53to force you to be circumcised are doing it for just one
- 14:56reason. They don't want to be persecuted for teaching that
- 15:00the cross of Christ alone can save. And even those
- 15:04who advocate circumcision don't really keep the
- 15:08whole Law. They only want you to be
- 15:12circumcised so they can brag about it and claim you as their disciples.
- 15:16As for me, God forbid that I should boast about anything
- 15:20except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 15:24Because of that cross, my interest in this world died
- 15:28long ago, and the world's interest in me is also
- 15:33long dead. It doesn't make any difference
- 15:37now whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether
- 15:41we really have been changed into new and different
- 15:45people. May God's mercy and peace be upon
- 15:49all those who live by this principle.
- 15:53They are the new people of God.
- 15:57From now on, don't let anyone trouble me with these things,
- 16:01for I bear on my body the scars that I show—
- 16:06that show I belong to Christ. My dear brothers and
- 16:10sisters, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with
- 16:14you all.
- 16:20Amen. Psalm 65:1-13.
- 16:24What mighty praise, O God, belongs to You in Zion!
- 16:28We will fulfill our vows to You, for You answer
- 16:32our prayers. And to You all people will come.
- 16:35Though our hearts are filled with sins, You forgive
- 16:39them all. What joy for those You choose to bring near,
- 16:43those who live in Your holy courts! What joy awaits
- 16:46us inside Your holy temple! You faithfully
- 16:50answer our prayers with awesome deeds. O God,
- 16:54our Savior, You are the hope of everyone on earth,
- 16:57even those who sail on distant seas. You formed
- 17:01the mountains by Your power and armed Yourself with mighty strength.
- 17:05You quieted the raging oceans with their pounding waves
- 17:09and silenced the shouting of the nations. Those who live at
- 17:13the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your wonders. From where the sun
- 17:17rises to where it sets, you inspire shouts of joy.
- 17:21You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich
- 17:25and fertile. The rivers of God will not run dry.
- 17:30They provide a bountiful harvest of grain, for you have ordered
- 17:34it so. You drench the plowed ground with rain,
- 17:37melting the clods and leveling the ridges. You soften the
- 17:41earth with showers and bless its abundant crops.
- 17:44You crown the year with a bountiful harvest.
- 17:47Even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.
- 17:51The wilderness becomes a lush pasture, and the hillsides
- 17:55blossom with joy. The meadows are clothed
- 17:59with flocks of sheep, and the valleys are carpeted with
- 18:02grain. They all shout and sing for joy.
- 18:09Proverbs 23:24. The father of
- 18:13godly children has cause for joy. What a pleasure
- 18:17it is to have wise children.
- 18:21I want to speak to you today from Galatians chapter 5,
- 18:25a rewind from yesterday, and also from chapter 6
- 18:29as we are concluding the closing chapters of Galatians.
- 18:34And in Galatians chapter 5, A real gem
- 18:39of truth comes from chapter 5, verse 18: But
- 18:42when you are directed by the Spirit,
- 18:45you are not under obligation to the Law of Moses.
- 18:51And really think on that. Reflect on that.
- 18:56When you're directed by the Spirit, you're not under obligation
- 19:00to the Law of Moses. So you
- 19:04have liberty instead of having to
- 19:08follow the dietary laws that are talked about in Leviticus
- 19:12chapter 23 or 26. You have
- 19:16liberty. You can keep
- 19:21fellowship with other believers on Saturday, on Shabbat,
- 19:24or on Sunday, and there's no condemnation whatsoever.
- 19:29If you meet with other believers on Sunday and not on Sabbath,
- 19:33Saturday. There is no obligation to
- 19:38the Law of Moses when you are directed by the
- 19:41Holy Spirit. Now, does that mean you live as a lawless
- 19:45person? No. The Word of God,
- 19:49the Torah, the Bible, is written upon
- 19:52your heart. It's internal. By the very
- 19:57finger of God because your heart has been circumcised.
- 20:01He takes out the heart of stone. He gives you a heart of flesh.
- 20:04He begins to write the Word of God upon your heart. And so now when
- 20:07you're led by the Spirit, you're doing things to
- 20:11walk in obedience to Jesus because you love Him,
- 20:15not because of compulsion or because of mechanical
- 20:19rote trying to externalize the
- 20:23rules and regulations, but it's love. It's the love of Christ
- 20:27that compels you. Now let's continue on.
- 20:31Galatians 5:19. When you follow the desires
- 20:35of your sinful nature, the results are clear: sexual immorality,
- 20:39impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry,
- 20:42sorcery, hostility, quarreling,
- 20:45jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition,
- 20:49dissension and division, envy,
- 20:53drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.
- 20:57Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of
- 21:00life will not inherit the kingdom of God.
- 21:06And here's the contrast, verse 22: But
- 21:10the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit
- 21:13in our lives: love, joy,
- 21:17peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
- 21:21gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against
- 21:25these things. Now, the fruit of the Spirit
- 21:28has to do with godly character in our lives,
- 21:33and it's different from the gifts of the Spirit. So fruit
- 21:38or character takes time to grow. If you
- 21:41take an apple seed or an orange seed and
- 21:45you plant it in your backyard, you're not going to expect to have
- 21:48apples or oranges the next day or even the next week or the next month.
- 21:52It takes years for an apple tree
- 21:56to grow from a seed and then to produce apples. It takes
- 22:01years for an orange seed to grow into a tree and then produce oranges.
- 22:05Similarly, the fruit or the character in our life
- 22:08takes years for God to shape that in us.
- 22:12And so the fruit is what gives us godly character
- 22:16and stability in Christ.
- 22:20That is in contrast to the list
- 22:24of qualities or behaviors of somebody who's living
- 22:28in their sinful nature. The idolatry,
- 22:31jealousy, outbursts of anger, dissension and division,
- 22:34etc. So another thing about the fruit
- 22:38of the Spirit, I'll share this with you. Many years ago, I had
- 22:42a vision that was very powerful, and I'll never forget it.
- 22:46And I was really struggling
- 22:50with having self-control in
- 22:54that I had teenagers in the house, and I
- 22:58had to get them up early and out the door early because I was dropping
- 23:00them off at school and going to work. And my
- 23:04daughter back then, it would
- 23:07take a freight train to wake her up in the morning. She just wouldn't wake
- 23:11up. And I
- 23:15was inevitably about 15 or 20 minutes late
- 23:19to work every day. And it was extremely stressful. I would arrive to work with
- 23:23my stomach in knots because I was always being there late
- 23:27because I couldn't get my daughter to wake up in the morning. And Honestly,
- 23:33I blew it and I would yell at her and I just didn't have very
- 23:37good self-control. So at
- 23:42that time, I had a vision in a worship environment
- 23:46at church. And in this vision, I saw a staircase.
- 23:51And at the very top of the staircase, Jesus was standing
- 23:54there and I was at the bottom step.
- 23:57And he said, oh, come up to me. And each step
- 24:01had a name. And I wasn't allowed
- 24:05to ascend to the next step until I had mastered the step that
- 24:08I was on. And the bottom step that I was on was
- 24:12self-control. And he spoke to my heart and said,
- 24:16these are all the ingredients of love,
- 24:20like the ingredients for making a cake. Or making cookies.
- 24:23You have to have flour and sugar and chocolate chips and eggs,
- 24:27all the different ingredients. And so the bottom step
- 24:32was self-control. And he said, you are not allowed to go up to the next
- 24:35step, which is called gentleness, until you have learned
- 24:38to practice and master self-control.
- 24:41In other words, if you're cranky
- 24:44and tired, zip your lips. Don't yell.
- 24:47Don't say anything. Just button your mouth until
- 24:52you're ready to speak in a calm, neutral voice.
- 24:56And so then once you can, you master self-control,
- 25:00then you go up to the next step, which is gentleness. It was the
- 25:03fruit of the spirit backwards,
- 25:06gentleness. And once you've mastered that and learned to be gentle
- 25:10and not harsh, then you can step up
- 25:14to the next step, which is faithfulness. And learn to
- 25:17be faithful in small things so that you're then counted worthy
- 25:21to be faithful in bigger things. And then once you've
- 25:25mastered that, you go up to the next step, which is goodness, and so on
- 25:29until finally you get to peace. And then you
- 25:33come up to the next step, which is joy. And then at
- 25:38the very top step where Jesus is standing is love.
- 25:42And so all of these steps kind of fold in upon themselves, and they're all
- 25:46ingredients in the recipe of what it really means
- 25:50to love in the way that Jesus loves.
- 25:54Love is faithful. It's kind.
- 25:57It's gentle. It's faithful.
- 26:01And love has self-control.
- 26:04So that really, really changed
- 26:09me. I'll just never forget it. The fruit of the Spirit as
- 26:12a staircase, and the bottom step is self-control, and at
- 26:17the top step is love. Now I
- 26:20want to look at Galatians chapter 6. And again,
- 26:25Paul in his whole book of Galatians, he's addressing the
- 26:29Galatians regarding their beginning to try to fall
- 26:33into works, to work and earn
- 26:37and perform to earn their salvation,
- 26:41that they have to do something. Jesus plus, and then you fill in the blank.
- 26:44Jesus plus circumcision, or Jesus plus, and then
- 26:48you fill in the blank with whatever it is.
- 26:51Jesus plus nothing.
- 26:55It's you simply put your faith in him. So he's summarizing
- 26:59and concluding here, and then Galatians chapter 6,
- 27:03verse 12. Those who are trying to
- 27:07force you to be circumcised are doing it for just one reason: they
- 27:11don't want to be persecuted for teaching that the cross of Christ
- 27:15alone can save.
- 27:19So it's not about works, it's not about performance, it's not
- 27:23about earning God's favor. He goes on
- 27:27to say in verse 14, as for me, God forbid that
- 27:31I should boast about anything except the cross
- 27:34of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest
- 27:38in this world died long ago,
- 27:42and the world's interest in me is also long dead.
- 27:47I believe in the book of 1 John it says, friendship with the world
- 27:51is hatred or enmity towards God.
- 27:55If you're a friend of the world, you have
- 27:59enmity towards God. So when we
- 28:03identify with Jesus and we become his follower and his
- 28:06disciple, we identify with him in his death.
- 28:10We die to ourselves, to our pride,
- 28:14to our flesh. We daily
- 28:18pick up our cross, which is an instrument of death,
- 28:21to follow him. And Paul says, it is no
- 28:25longer I who live, but Christ who lives in
- 28:29me. Laura has died.
- 28:33You have died. And it is no longer you
- 28:36who lives, but Jesus Christ who lives in you.
- 28:41So he says, my interest in
- 28:45this world died long ago.
- 28:49And so where does his interest lie instead? His interest
- 28:52lies in communicating and sharing the gospel with the
- 28:56Gentiles, with the nations, that they would have
- 28:59the gift of eternal life. He goes
- 29:03on to say that we have become the new people
- 29:07of God. What counts is whether we have
- 29:10really been changed into new and different
- 29:17People. People can change when
- 29:21people repent. When you or I,
- 29:24when we repent of our sin
- 29:29and we agree with God, this is sin and I hate
- 29:33it and I don't want this anymore in my life, and I confess
- 29:37it as sin, and I ask you to forgive me, and I ask you to
- 29:40change me, Jesus. The Holy Spirit changes us
- 29:44from glory to glory,
- 29:47and we be— we are to become more like Him,
- 29:52to become more like our Savior.
- 29:56Have a blessed day, and we'll see you tomorrow. Shalom.
