- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the u Kon Hockey Coaches Show for this
- 0:01Speaker 1: Monday night with head coach Mike havan Off. Five games
- 0:04Speaker 1: into the season. One thing, and we were just talking
- 0:06Speaker 1: about this off here. There's not been a lot of
- 0:08Speaker 1: movement as far as moving players around with lines. It's
- 0:11Speaker 1: been Ethan Hudson and well, I should mention Ethan Gardula
- 0:15Speaker 1: Hudson schandor Kayden Shahan who can just skate like the Dickens,
- 0:19Speaker 1: Jake Richard, Ethan Whitcomb, who's big boy six ' four
- 0:22Speaker 1: skates really well, Joey Muldowney, Jake personal taper heat slip.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Here's the change. Early on in the season it was Larkin.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Now it's Mike Murdtag and then you've made one adjustment
- 0:33Speaker 1: on the on the d. Tray Scott plays his first
- 0:35Speaker 1: game against holy Cross and he gets what proves to
- 0:37Speaker 1: be the game winner.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, Hugh Larkin was back in this weekend playing with
- 0:41Speaker 2: Tabor and Perceval. Okay, so yeah we did.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Uh.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Tray Scott got in. He's had a really good preseason
- 0:50Speaker 2: and scored the game winner against holy Cross, and I
- 0:53Speaker 2: thought he played extremely well against PU as well.
- 0:57Speaker 3: When you are assessing lines and whether or not to
- 1:01Speaker 3: mix things up. You know, if you're getting shut out
- 1:06Speaker 3: in consecutive games, I'm sure that's okay, we're going to
- 1:08Speaker 3: mix things up. But you're scoring goals. So are you
- 1:11Speaker 3: checking in with players to say, hey, I know you
- 1:13Speaker 3: guys scored last night. How did you feel working together?
- 1:16Speaker 2: You know, yes, when you're putting your lines together, it's
- 1:21Speaker 2: an amalgamation of a lot of things. It's not just
- 1:24Speaker 2: some You like to have some speed, and you like
- 1:26Speaker 2: to have some skill, and you have to have some size.
- 1:29Speaker 2: There has to be some chemistry between the players, so
- 1:34Speaker 2: it's not there's just so many factors that go into
- 1:38Speaker 2: it that you try to find that mesh. And we've been,
- 1:44Speaker 2: as I said, so far this year. You make little
- 1:47Speaker 2: tweaks here and there, but so far this year we've
- 1:50Speaker 2: been getting contributions out of all four lines.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Mike, your centers other than Ethan Wickham are veteran guys.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Hudson of course is the veteran on the most veteran,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but Tabor and Ryan Taddle, who we'll talk to here,
- 2:02Speaker 1: doing a decent job in the face off circle. But
- 2:04Speaker 1: I imagine there's always room for improvement.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Yeah, the you know, you try to we have you
- 2:13Speaker 2: always try to be like fifty five percent of more
- 2:16Speaker 2: most teams when they go into a game. If we
- 2:17Speaker 2: can be fifty five percent of more, that's pretty good
- 2:20Speaker 2: on the faceoff dot because like the best of all time,
- 2:23Speaker 2: if you look at the best centers of all time,
- 2:26Speaker 2: they're about I think, like Patrice Bergon might have been
- 2:29Speaker 2: sixty percent or fifty eight to fifty nine percent. You know, Uh,
- 2:33Speaker 2: there's so much that goes into a face off. It's
- 2:35Speaker 2: not just snapping it back, it's your wings helping out
- 2:38Speaker 2: and everything else. So the last three games we we've
- 2:42Speaker 2: been right around fifty. So it's an area that was
- 2:46Speaker 2: certainly always looking to improve.
- 2:47Speaker 1: What about the face offs and the special teams, I know,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I think that was one of the issues that you
- 2:51Speaker 1: had in one of the games earlier in the year.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Yes, uh, you know, it's so important on the penalty kill.
- 2:57Speaker 2: If you can win it and ice the puck, you're
- 3:00Speaker 2: killing twenty seconds right away. On the power play, it's
- 3:04Speaker 2: even more important because you can hem teams in by
- 3:07Speaker 2: winning that face off and you know, having a multiple
- 3:10Speaker 2: shot shift and retrieving pucks with the extra guy. So
- 3:14Speaker 2: it's really important to get those face offs on special teams.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Especially when you're on the power play, so you're five
- 3:20Speaker 3: on four. How many different calls are there where the
- 3:25Speaker 3: center will say, hey, this is what we're about to run.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I'm going to send it to the corner, dig it out,
- 3:28Speaker 3: per sending it back.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah. No, we're the center's trying to win it back
- 3:33Speaker 2: on the power play. We want possession, and most of
- 3:36Speaker 2: the time, you know, they outnumber you four to three,
- 3:38Speaker 2: so there are times where we'll bring another guy down
- 3:42Speaker 2: on that face off, so your wings have to help out,
- 3:47Speaker 2: you know, if you do lose it, like you have
- 3:49Speaker 2: to have pressure on their d right away so they
- 3:51Speaker 2: can't get a clean icing. So we're going to continue
- 3:55Speaker 2: to work on it.
- 3:55Speaker 1: When you're on the rush on the power play, coming
- 3:58Speaker 1: out of your own zone, is there a key or
- 4:01Speaker 1: keys that you want your guys to look at, whether
- 4:03Speaker 1: to a try to carry it over the blue line
- 4:05Speaker 1: or B try to dump a chase.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Yeah, some of it's dependent on the kills for check
- 4:10Speaker 2: as well. If you know, like Bu was very aggressive
- 4:13Speaker 2: down ice, so we were making a quick pass right away,
- 4:17Speaker 2: like you'll see sometimes if it's a team that's going
- 4:19Speaker 2: to sit back in the neutral zone in a box.
- 4:22Speaker 2: We may go to a drop where you're bringing one
- 4:24Speaker 2: guy up and then you're dropping it, so you're getting
- 4:27Speaker 2: speed coming at guys standing still. But it's all, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 2: veries dependent on our opponent.
- 4:34Speaker 3: So we're about to talk to Taber he slipping Ryan Taddle.
- 4:36Speaker 3: They both got a couple of goals under their belts
- 4:38Speaker 3: each this season. What have you liked about the growth
- 4:42Speaker 3: that you've seen year over year and those two guys specifically.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Well, they've always been great competitors and good skaters. They
- 4:50Speaker 2: you know, they put pressure on the opponent quite a bit.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I've just liked to watch how they've matured as players
- 4:57Speaker 2: and how they you know, providing different roles for us.
- 5:03Speaker 2: You know, both have become really good penalty killers. Ryan
- 5:06Speaker 2: has stepped in on the power play every now and then.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Tabor has become a big locker room leader and a
- 5:13Speaker 2: voice in the locker room. So I always say one
- 5:16Speaker 2: of the greatest joys of being a coach is just
- 5:19Speaker 2: watching those kids mature over the four years and watching
- 5:22Speaker 2: them grow and become, you know, basically from adolescents into
- 5:26Speaker 2: young men.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And Ryan growing into the center spot too.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yes, he's always been pretty good in the on the dot.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You know, he can play left wing, he can play center,
- 5:36Speaker 2: so he has a lot of versatility as a player.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Before we go to break. When freshmen come in, I mean,
- 5:42Speaker 1: obviously they've played junior most of them in your time,
- 5:47Speaker 1: but convincing them to play two hundred feet it can't
- 5:50Speaker 1: be that hard, can't it.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, I mean, listen, guys that like to score goals.
- 6:00Speaker 2: They score goals for a reason because they're driven to
- 6:02Speaker 2: score goals and that's their number one focus. So you
- 6:08Speaker 2: can't take that away from them. But you have to
- 6:11Speaker 2: teach them. And we talk about it all the time.
- 6:13Speaker 2: If you look at teams that win the Stanley Cup,
- 6:15Speaker 2: if you look at Los Angeles when they were winning,
- 6:17Speaker 2: they had Onse Kopatar. It was one of the best
- 6:19Speaker 2: two way centers in the game. Patrese burser on for
- 6:22Speaker 2: the Bruins when when they won the Cup, Jonathan Taves
- 6:25Speaker 2: for Chicago, like Matthew k. Chuck's a two way player,
- 6:30Speaker 2: you know, a good two hundred foot player, So that
- 6:33Speaker 2: you see the stars on teams that win a lot
- 6:36Speaker 2: of the time, like Sidney Crosby, great two way player,
- 6:40Speaker 2: so very rarely do you see the one trick pony
- 6:44Speaker 2: who just scores and is minus thirty on the year
- 6:48Speaker 2: winning trophies.
- 6:49Speaker 1: All right, we will get to a break when we
- 6:51Speaker 1: come back. Our player interviews commence. Tabor, he slips up first.
- 6:55Speaker 1: The young man from Frisco, Texas is the Yukon Hockey
- 6:58Speaker 1: Coaches Show continues from Bear Smokehouse Barbecue here Onlearfield.
