- 0:00Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:03movie talk show where each week Alice takes a movie off our
- 0:05shelf and presents it to the other four discussion This week
- 0:10we've got coming off of Daves shelf 1994's Dumb and Dumber,
- 0:16written and directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly.
- 0:20Possibly related, I believe so. Dave, why is this movie on your?
- 0:25Shelf. Actually, Phillip, this movie
- 0:27isn't on my shelf. I was unable to locate it.
- 0:30Wow. It was on my shelf so still
- 0:32qualifies for the show. I don't know what kind of
- 0:35credulity we're stretching with this, but I don't know if.
- 0:37Mom I. Used it one time in your life.
- 0:40Was on a shelf somewhere. Come.
- 0:42On it's feels like it was there OK, and that's good enough.
- 0:45However, I do have the sequel. OK, dumb and Dumber.
- 0:49Rule is that what it is and the cover art is very similar and
- 0:54I've never watched it. Probably for the best.
- 0:56I heard it's not great. It's one of those all the best
- 0:59scenes in the trailer. I'm like, Oh yeah.
- 1:01Because that's really. Funny.
- 1:02And the trailer is less than two minutes.
- 1:03Yeah. If that's the case, well, I'll
- 1:06still watch it eventually. Yeah, you have no shame really.
- 1:09Very little. You won't put good movies on
- 1:11your shelf, but you'll watch this.
- 1:12Stuff is crap, yeah. Question is, would I want to
- 1:15report this on my shelf? That is the question.
- 1:17And I honestly, why I'm bringing it off is because I thought the
- 1:22apartment was a comedy. I thought, well, OK, I'll do
- 1:25comedy too. Like 1 upping you.
- 1:28Sticking it that wasn't my no, it's just no, I'm just trying to
- 1:31fit in. Actually forgot it and been
- 1:33awhile since we've done it. Jim Carrey.
- 1:34I mean, this is I don't have to explain why I would have a Jim
- 1:37Carrey movie on my shelf. I mean, I think
- 1:39self-explanatory. Exactly.
- 1:40So that's no big surprise. And that's about it.
- 1:44There it is. Well, that's fantastic.
- 1:46Let's find out what the IMDb has to say about this particular
- 1:48movie. Yeah, See, they're able to
- 1:49articulate it. Yeah.
- 1:51Summarizes Read better than Lloyd.
- 1:54It's fair. After a woman leaves a briefcase
- 1:57at an airport terminal, a dumb limo driver and his Dumber
- 2:01friend set out on hilarious cross country road trip to Aspen
- 2:04to return it. Here's a question that that legs
- 2:08is hairy, smarter or Dumber than Lloyd.
- 2:14Who is the dumb and who is the Dumber?
- 2:16That is a dumb seesaw. That's what that cause I'm back
- 2:20and forth sure. I mean, Lloyd can't read.
- 2:24That is true. Harry can.
- 2:26So if you want to go on that basis alone, I give it to Harry.
- 2:29Yeah. But there are some moments would
- 2:31say, you know what? No, Lloyd is the more
- 2:34intellectual one of the two, and I use that word quite loosely.
- 2:38Yes, yes, you'd have. To that would be an interesting
- 2:40debate I never actually thought about.
- 2:42That that's what the MTV brings to the.
- 2:43Table it does cause finally debate, you know, maybe at the
- 2:48end will reveal what we think if we record Yeah, if we remember.
- 2:54If we remember, probably not. Probably not so.
- 2:57We'll take. Maybe the audience at the end
- 2:59can rate us. Yes, well, we don't want that.
- 3:02Which ones more dumb now? Have you seen this movie before?
- 3:06Oh yes, my man. OK, well.
- 3:07I don't know with. You 94?
- 3:09Yeah, Come on. I don't know what you're doing
- 3:11in 94. I'm watching this.
- 3:13Well, you know I peaked. If you recall. 94 Yeah, this is
- 3:19after Ace Ventura, that I know. Yeah, 94 was the year for Jim.
- 3:24Carrey. Yeah.
- 3:24He was a busy boy. Yeah, yeah, Mask was out by now.
- 3:28Yeah, pretty sure this is the third one.
- 3:30I this I believe is the third of the trilogy in 94.
- 3:32I want to say he got them all. He got in cheap.
- 3:36The studio just signed him and like, OK, we're doing this
- 3:39feature is a monster hit. Yeah, Mask is a monster hit, and
- 3:42this is a monster hit. So it's a couple of years from
- 3:45now. He's getting paid, you know, $15
- 3:47million or whatever for the cable guy.
- 3:49That's why he's cheap. Yeah, I don't even know if it
- 3:51was conscious because the movies all came out the same year, but
- 3:53that means they're all shot the same year too.
- 3:55So nobody knew that Ace Ventura was going to be the thing.
- 3:58He just was a hot comedy property.
- 4:00But holy God, this guy was a game changer.
- 4:03So in hindsight, roll my eyes at something like Ace Ventura.
- 4:07We did it on the podcast. It's not good.
- 4:09Movie I think it is. But there is enough hilarity in
- 4:12that and the introduction of Who is this guy?
- 4:16That carries over throughout. And I think ultimately the
- 4:19three, this is my favorite of them.
- 4:21Ohe interesting, saves me asking you.
- 4:23But I don't need a sequel to any of these movies.
- 4:25Frankly, they got him, but I didn't want.
- 4:28Them. Is there a mask too?
- 4:29Well, there was technically he was Mask.
- 4:31Yeah, he wasn't Kennedy. Yeah.
- 4:34So that was a huge. Kennedy, Jamie.
- 4:37Kennedy Project. Isn't that a thing?
- 4:38I believe so. Yeah.
- 4:39So for me, this movie in 94 was the top.
- 4:43So I just thought this is hilarious.
- 4:45Bees. Knees, everything about it.
- 4:47I laughed at Jim Carrey and he's been true.
- 4:49We talked about it. Everybody's kind of mimicking
- 4:51and quoting. You were taking that accent or
- 4:53that that affectation on The Voice.
- 4:54Absolutely. I didn't do that with that movie
- 4:57and didn't really do it with this because he's not that same
- 4:59type of character. Obviously he's got range, but
- 5:01the funny stuff in this movie was at the time for me, I think,
- 5:04the funniest stuff I've ever. Seen.
- 5:06So this type of comedy, it's not just one type, it branches out,
- 5:09but they're all your cup of tea. Back in 94100%, you've grown
- 5:15well. I just think I think anybody
- 5:17that watched this movie at 15 and watch it again at 45 is
- 5:21probably not all that interested in some of the humor.
- 5:24I think this movie that we've done recently, not a comedy per
- 5:27se, but in the last year where I really changed my tune was
- 5:30Varsity Blues. Sure.
- 5:31Like why am I watching this crap?
- 5:33Like everything about it. I don't know if I was having a
- 5:35bad day. I just did not like it.
- 5:38But in 98 was. Yeah, like I had the soundtrack
- 5:41of the movie speaking, which had it for this.
- 5:43Great soundtrack. I absolutely have.
- 5:45That's definitely in the notes. Yeah.
- 5:46My favorite soundtracks of the year.
- 5:47I like Crash Test Dummies course.
- 5:49Pretty solid group. Peter Pumpkinhead and Yeah, and.
- 5:54That's it, yeah. It's got a Pete Droge song.
- 5:57Who my love? If you don't love me, I'll kill
- 5:59myself. Not unlike last week's movie of
- 6:03just a great soundtrack. Yeah, which I didn't.
- 6:05Really need it cause I had the. Actual crash test dummies CD so
- 6:08I kinda doubled the coffee spoon, double dipped a bit
- 6:10there. So great stuff, great Canadian
- 6:13band. They are Canadian, right?
- 6:14What's your experience with the Fairly Brothers, if any?
- 6:17Not gonna jump the. Gun.
- 6:18You know, they're an interesting story to me because this is, to
- 6:21me, their best movie. This is the first one.
- 6:24I'm sorry it's not their best movie.
- 6:25The next one they did was there Something about Mary Oh, which I
- 6:29think is actually a funnier movie and a better.
- 6:31Movie which is funny because Mrs. Newbern.
- 6:33Is Magda, she's in all other movies That that makes sense.
- 6:36I recognize. I don't know if this is their
- 6:37first one, maybe maybe first big hit, certainly their biggest hit
- 6:41at the time. But yeah, Mary was to me a
- 6:43better movie. And.
- 6:44Agreed it was good. But I never liked Kingpin.
- 6:47People love that movie. I hate it, me and myself and
- 6:50Irene. I really.
- 6:51Hated. I think that's one of my least
- 6:53favorite Cary. Movies bad to me anyway.
- 6:55And then I don't remember much else, but this guy Peter won an
- 7:00Oscar. That's odd for.
- 7:02Well, you've won it for green. Book.
- 7:04Green Book. It's a disastrous garbage movie.
- 7:07Then, but he won what for it Best picture and.
- 7:09Best writing and like, yeah, that.
- 7:11He would work. Terrible movie, but it won.
- 7:13It beat Black Klansman in a funny little call back to 1989
- 7:16Oscars. Driving Miss Daisy beats do the
- 7:19right thing Anyway, so it's a bad movie.
- 7:22And these guys, they never really, to me, kind of captured
- 7:26it. They peaked a couple years later
- 7:28with Mary. And then I don't think they ever
- 7:30really did much to me that really touched me for that.
- 7:32But there is no denying that this movie and Mary are two of
- 7:37the funniest movies, certainly at the time that I'd ever
- 7:39watched. So it's safe to say, because
- 7:41obviously Kerry's not into something about Mary, that they
- 7:43don't need him to carry the film.
- 7:45They're able to carry it with the likes of Matt Dillon, yes.
- 7:48Absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:49Now Ben Stiller. Oh yeah, Matt Dillon still is
- 7:52that movie to me. But yeah, he's funny, fantastic
- 7:54and we love. But Stiller at that time was
- 7:55really in my wheelhouse as well for what Disaster was around
- 7:58that time. Like he was just a guy that I
- 7:59was like, I like this guy's vibe.
- 8:01That family just was the funny vibe in them that that ability
- 8:05and obviously he's Cameron Diaz has.
- 8:08Yeah, she was in the mask, incidentally.
- 8:09So selective tissue there just for the shit of it.
- 8:12So, you know, this movie, it hasn't necessarily grown super
- 8:16well. I would say like some of the
- 8:17jokes fall a little flat to me and we can kind of get into some
- 8:19of them over the time. But fundamentally, this movie is
- 8:23still really, really funny. And that is not easy to say
- 8:27about some of this 30 years ago, because some of the humor is
- 8:30just like anything, it doesn't grow, right.
- 8:33The apartment in 1960 might have been the funniest movie of the
- 8:36year, but it's not funny. But it's not funny now, whatever
- 8:39that is. It's not funny now, right?
- 8:40And so the romantic comedy tropes of that aren't as
- 8:44interesting 30 years later. And so this one I find the joke,
- 8:49some of them not so great, but the stuff that works works so
- 8:52well that it's really works for. Me.
- 8:54Well, I'm curious to find out what your funniest piece is of
- 8:57this film. Interesting.
- 8:58Stay tuned. Let's get into the movie
- 9:10Phillip. Boom Shaka Laka.
- 9:12That's how you know you're in the movie.
- 9:14Yeah, good title sequence. I guess, yeah, I mean nothing
- 9:18special. No, not really.
- 9:19Good song. It's OK, and the use of
- 9:22misspelling the credits is kind of a joke.
- 9:25But it's one thing because it comes up right away.
- 9:28This is our hook scene. Entree to what?
- 9:32Maybe what type of comedy we're going to get into is the limo,
- 9:36yes. Not driver at this.
- 9:38Point. We don't know it pulls.
- 9:39Up fooled me to this Austrian woman and he does the I thought
- 9:44Austria was Australia joke and they do geography jokes about
- 9:49three times in this movie. This is the first one obviously.
- 9:53Does this hook still work for you?
- 9:55No. Did it ever work?
- 9:56For you. Did you ever find it that funny?
- 9:58No. I thought that's actually one of
- 10:00the easiest jokes the whole movie.
- 10:01Yeah. Shrimp on the Barbie.
- 10:02Austria, Australia. I don't like the stereotypical
- 10:05easy jokes. That's not clever to me.
- 10:07Yeah, I mean, this was got a lot of clever stuff, Yeah.
- 10:09And easy doesn't always mean bad.
- 10:11Looking back and even in the moment thinking, well, this
- 10:14feels simple. Well, I mean there are simple.
- 10:18People, I guess so it just felt like, oh, but what a truthfully,
- 10:23the thing that stands out to me is not that joke and was never
- 10:26that joke. It was his playing of the window
- 10:30going up and down that cause I was like, well this is Kerry,
- 10:33right? Cause picture the movie is Jim
- 10:36Carrey. That movie sucks if it's anyone
- 10:37other than him. And I would have assumed then
- 10:40that the same would be true here.
- 10:43And so while the joke didn't matter to me, I didn't find it
- 10:45funny or interesting or clever even.
- 10:47But him getting kind of choked out by the window and the nose
- 10:51and then crawling to the front, to the front and becoming the
- 10:53driver. And that being the actual joke,
- 10:56I was like, well, Kerry is still a force.
- 10:59He is the joke. And if he can maintain that, I'm
- 11:02going to like this movie. And that more or less holds true
- 11:05still, even now. But that joke never really
- 11:07delivered to me. I do find it clever from a film
- 11:10matic perspective to have him and Harry cross paths in driving
- 11:18the handover. Yeah, that makes.
- 11:20That's a good name for that. Yeah.
- 11:21It's what it's called in the business, sure.
- 11:23If you remember Magnolia, we talked a lot about that because
- 11:25it's a great tracking shot through the.
- 11:26Television. We talked a lot about some
- 11:28stuff. Don't remember the long episode.
- 11:30Nice wheels, Shaggin wagon, and we get our introduction to Jeff
- 11:36Daniels, who is a actor that intrigues me.
- 11:42OK, we see him in small roles like in Looper, yeah, which is
- 11:45not a nothing role, but but we love him in it.
- 11:48I think we did just for that moment.
- 11:50But I've seen him in TV and I've loved him in shows and series
- 11:54that the Was he in the Western? No.
- 11:56Small town. Yeah.
- 11:57In the American rust. Yeah.
- 11:59Yeah. I think the West.
- 12:00In the West, maybe. Yeah.
- 12:01Dark movie, very dark. Arachnophobia.
- 12:04I don't even think I've seen. It on the list but it's coming
- 12:07out. This year.
- 12:08I don't know. He's just, he's everywhere.
- 12:11He's been around for a long, long time.
- 12:12You first thought of Jeff Daniels is not this.
- 12:15For me it was OK because I didn't really recognize him from
- 12:20many other things. In 1994, I had definitely seen
- 12:24Arachnophobia and I loved him in it and he was funny in it
- 12:28because it's pretty funny movie and.
- 12:30But more of like a smart guy like not like a dumb.
- 12:33Funny, dumb, but just like a funny guy.
- 12:35So I don't know that I had any real baggage with him.
- 12:38It wasn't until the years later that I was like, oh, you're in
- 12:40terms of endearment, you're great.
- 12:41You're married to them, you're great.
- 12:42You're in The Newsroom. Many years later, you're on
- 12:44television, you're in town right movies, but obviously the
- 12:47Lookout and Looper and this and that.
- 12:49So he became much bigger to me. If you would ask me in 94, he
- 12:54introduction to this guy. Not he's not this guy in real
- 12:57life, obviously, but just in terms of like, yeah, Jeff
- 12:59Daniels equals Harry. I don't know why I don't feel
- 13:03that way, because everything you named off I haven't seen.
- 13:06Yeah, this is like the only movie you saw of him and for 30
- 13:08years and yeah. But for some reason I felt like
- 13:11this is a guy who's normally a serious actor playing a comedic
- 13:14role, and I don't know where that stems from.
- 13:17Couldn't tell you. I mean, it's true, but it is
- 13:20maybe I'm just that smart. I remember there was a video or
- 13:23like a, you know, we did some interview on some talk show or
- 13:25whatever else we talked about that basically was like, they
- 13:27knew that they had Jim Carrey in the bag and he was kind of an
- 13:31afterthought cause he's gonna play second fiddle and he's
- 13:34prone to, at that time, I didn't know this at the time, but doing
- 13:37more dramatic roles and he was like, I could just lock into
- 13:39that silliness. And to watch the same guy from
- 13:44American Rust or whatever you're referencing and me The Newsroom
- 13:47or whatever and see this performance, it's like, wow, Jim
- 13:52Carrey, I expect it. Of course.
- 13:54Like, yeah, this is a variation on silly faces, but Harry to me
- 13:57kind of steals the movie for that reason.
- 14:00He's doing something different. Which works.
- 14:02Well, and the great ministry for sure they are.
- 14:04Never worked together again though.
- 14:06Well, they did. That was so much conviction.
- 14:09Yeah, that really didn't know. What's funny is that they worked
- 14:13together again in a movie called Dumb and Dumberer.
- 14:16Oh that insides. Yeah shut up.
- 14:21Anywho, yeah, I love his intro with him giving out the lunch
- 14:25order to the docks. Sure, who's got the Yeah, the
- 14:30footlong. Get your foot long and it's a
- 14:32little little. It's really funny.
- 14:35And the good dog acting like they're on cue.
- 14:39Right. Yeah, Missing Frank.
- 14:42What's his Fraser? What's that done?
- 14:44Oh, Eddie. Eddie.
- 14:45Yeah, he's busy 94. He's actually doing Frasier.
- 14:51Maybe because Cheers ended in 93, I don't know how long it
- 14:55was. Before, I think it was Asia,
- 14:56was. Born.
- 14:57So yeah, maybe he was, yeah, auditioning at the time.
- 15:01But yeah, that's a great scene and and it pays off by the end
- 15:03of the conversation. It's a great introduction to
- 15:06these two people that are functional morons.
- 15:10They have jobs, they're employed, even if obviously
- 15:12changes. But even if you're an idiot, you
- 15:14can get a job. As the take away is your look.
- 15:18Yes, funny guy. Uh, one thing I still find funny
- 15:30and it's very small and sometimes I think the more
- 15:32subtle jokes is what I appreciate in movies, not the
- 15:35big scenes, though I do still enjoy some of the the big ones,
- 15:38but something as little as the mouth spray, the banaka and just
- 15:44spraying it in the wrong direction.
- 15:46And he's used Binaca before in Ace Ventura, or he said the
- 15:50word. Biased.
- 15:50Say the word, yeah. At the very least it just says
- 15:53obliviousness to. Any was reaction as if he had
- 15:57gotten it you know 2 squirts and.
- 16:00OK, he tricks his mind. Tricks his mind.
- 16:03At this moment he's picking up Mary Swanson, played by Future
- 16:09Wife, Future Wife, wife. I think they were just together,
- 16:12but either way. They had a kid together.
- 16:14So did they? Yeah.
- 16:16Gosh, pretty sure. Don't make me second guess
- 16:18myself, I will. He was married before he.
- 16:20Was. I will make a correction if I
- 16:21need to, but I'm gonna stand by it for now.
- 16:23Alright there. You go can't check it now I have
- 16:25to come back in a couple. Of weeks.
- 16:26What is a fact is that you are a love at first sight kind of guy.
- 16:30I believe it for sure. Believe it anyways.
- 16:33Yeah, 100% experienced. It so you felt this moment.
- 16:35Then for sure, 100% also is Lauren fucking Holly.
- 16:37So yeah, I felt it. She.
- 16:39Is, I mean, not my type because of the hair colour, but even
- 16:43with that fact I still found myself a little taken by She's
- 16:47gorgeous. I make an exception.
- 16:49Yeah, the redhead exception is in play.
- 16:52He's definitely smitten anyway, though.
- 16:55Have you been in the limo? I want to get this.
- 16:57Out of the way here when I was 17.
- 16:59Oh, prom, prom with my dear friend Sarah.
- 17:03OK, how's she doing? She just got over cancer,
- 17:06actually. Good.
- 17:07Yeah, it's good in remission. That's a feat.
- 17:09It's doing great. I've never been in a limo.
- 17:11It's a missed opportunity you like, I'm OK with it.
- 17:15I'm not like I. Could if you want it, I I'm.
- 17:17Fine with it, but I don't feel like something missing in my.
- 17:19Life, it was a bit of a waste of money at the time, but when
- 17:22you're 17 prom, you're like, yeah, we're gonna spend a little
- 17:24cash. You're gonna do it.
- 17:25Do it right? I love small talk.
- 17:29Actually, I don't hate it. The podcast proves it.
- 17:33I remember being in high school, yeah, vaguely many decades ago,
- 17:38and in drama class, I remember I had one line in this little show
- 17:43that we did OK. And the line was I have worms.
- 17:47Oh, wow. That was it.
- 17:48Now, I don't know if I took that from this movie.
- 17:51I mean, it's in completely different context, I would hope.
- 17:54But it was my only line, and people loved it, really.
- 17:56Just the way I delivered it. OK.
- 17:58I'm in my bed. That's right.
- 18:00Yeah. Dave here.
- 18:03But what I'm more like about this scene is when he's talking
- 18:06to her and not watching the road, Yes.
- 18:09And the impact that has from you just see the explosion in the
- 18:14back window like this is hilarious.
- 18:16It's just. Good comedy, yeah.
- 18:18She, I don't think is a particularly great actor.
- 18:20No. Good looking, gorgeous, gorgeous
- 18:23breath, but definitely. Not a tall order for her,
- 18:25though. In this movie, no.
- 18:26And she's not tall, actually. You know, outside of them,
- 18:28nobody's really good in this book.
- 18:30I think that's not not wrong. Yeah, like I'm talking from
- 18:32Terry Garr. Really.
- 18:35Rocket. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 18:38Thought maybe Mike Starr. Mike stars.
- 18:40Let's not throw shade to Everybody is playing it pretty
- 18:42big, pretty broad. Yeah.
- 18:44I think that scene is really funny.
- 18:45And also how he's talking. Statistically speaking, most
- 18:48people die on the way. And you're like, OK, so the
- 18:51contrast to that, it's just really smart writing and clever.
- 18:53And the way that those two work off each other, it's like, yeah,
- 18:56you can see some chemistry there for.
- 18:57Sure. Well enough enough for a little
- 19:00while, anyway. Wedding bells.
- 19:02But I think what caps off that scene with her is the goodbye.
- 19:07And this is just Jim Carrey. And that's just the type of
- 19:09company I like and the type of comedy I like to do.
- 19:12Physical comedy, physical combined with just something
- 19:14that's taking out of history that is serious.
- 19:17Like that line has been done. Like I hate goodbyes.
- 19:20People have said that in terms of endearment, I don't know, but
- 19:23something. But his version of it of just
- 19:26met this woman. It doesn't belong.
- 19:29Here, no. The finger on the mouth too.
- 19:30It's not subtle. It's not, it's not cute.
- 19:33It is like an abreast, like the face is getting mashed.
- 19:36It's that commitment to that moment that I appreciate that
- 19:40and I appreciate it doing it. And there's instances of that
- 19:43type of comedy later in this movie as well, because this
- 19:46dabbles with different types of comedy.
- 19:49Very paints. With such a broad brush you can
- 19:51really do so many types and different variations.
- 19:54Which can't hurt, because remember, if you recall, we did
- 19:57Liar. Liar.
- 19:57I hate. It so, yeah.
- 19:58And I didn't like it either, though his performances in some
- 20:01instances were good, but he's not a lawyer.
- 20:04Like he's just doing it for the sake of performance.
- 20:08Pet detective Makes sense to me. That's an idiot.
- 20:11Makes sense, yeah. He's committing himself.
- 20:13The character, yeah. And this points in this movie
- 20:15that maybe not so much, but ace, definitely.
- 20:17Yeah. But lawyer Liar.
- 20:19That's just. Yeah, you're just taking the
- 20:21crazy, wacky Jim Carrey and putting it into a different
- 20:24setting, and I think it doesn't work.
- 20:25And we've talked a lot about that over the years.
- 20:27This, I think, is right up his alley, obviously, and it's still
- 20:30that early formative stuff where he's willing to do it.
- 20:32I think he's retired more or less now.
- 20:34That's for me. He just wouldn't do this type of
- 20:36movie. He did it for money, I suppose,
- 20:3910 years ago or whatever it was. Phil, I got to bring this next
- 20:42point up because you worked at an airport.
- 20:44Yeah. OK, so this sticks out to me.
- 20:46Sure. Out of all your stories that
- 20:48I've listened to. He drops her off.
- 20:51She might love the plot of the movie, seemingly as she has a
- 20:55suitcase full of money because her husband's been kidnapped.
- 20:58We have Mike Starr and she Thug. OK, I'm going to call it.
- 21:03Sure. She's supposed to leave it by
- 21:05the escalator. First of all, it's not as close
- 21:08as escalator as it should. That is my biggest complaint.
- 21:11It's a complaint be is Mike Starr says to she thug.
- 21:16You pick up the suitcase. Yeah.
- 21:19And she says piece of cake. Yeah, it is.
- 21:23It's very simple. This is not a difficult.
- 21:26Task. I'm on it, yeah.
- 21:28But obviously the one that takes the cake is he conveniently is
- 21:32driving by this airport that has a lot of windows, which could be
- 21:35a thing. Very true, very true.
- 21:36Now, this is pre 9/11. Granted, that is the key factor
- 21:40right there, but they are through security at this point
- 21:42because they're going to the gates.
- 21:44I can't be through security. I thought the gates were past
- 21:46security. Gates A.
- 21:47Gates B you're. Maybe terminals, yeah, I mean
- 21:51gate A-26, yes, but you're in more terminal.
- 21:54Territory he gets all the way to the tarmac.
- 21:57Tarmac. See This is why I lent the the
- 22:00extra apron. So at that point he would have
- 22:02had to. Go through.
- 22:03Yeah, no, sorry, I'm saying that they collectively were not at
- 22:05the gate. He eventually gets to the yeah,
- 22:07that's a pre eleven thing, but. My point is, there's no way he
- 22:11gets there before she gets there.
- 22:14The sheath hug to that briefcase?
- 22:16Oh sure, from outside. There's five steps away and he.
- 22:20Is outside the airport with many areas to get through. 1st just
- 22:24has to get across just your door.
- 22:26But he's also dealing with the. Airbag problems.
- 22:28So I mean, there are a lot of things wrong with this scene,
- 22:30but it's not it's fault. He could have gotten into that
- 22:35bag without any hassle whatsoever.
- 22:37The timing of it absolutely doesn't work.
- 22:39Just saying other obstacles, walking through a door.
- 22:43But obviously it's really funny. I'm the limo driver.
- 22:46That's just funny stuff. And it's not the first time this
- 22:49has happened enough. Strange what we see next has
- 22:53happened last week we're in apartments apartments and they
- 22:57both lost their jobs. And not for the first time, this
- 23:00seems to be. This is one of my favorite
- 23:02moments of the whole. Movie.
- 23:03Interesting. I don't really have much of
- 23:05this. It's.
- 23:05Really just the reaction to, oh, well, you know, I lost my job to
- 23:09get fired. Yeah.
- 23:10Yeah. You know, they don't like it
- 23:11when you do this. And then.
- 23:12OK, OK. And then how about you, Harry?
- 23:14Well, I lost my job too. Well, you're a pathetic loser.
- 23:17I love that line. I've said it 1000 times since.
- 23:20It's the dynamic between these two.
- 23:22And it's actually goes to something that I think is maybe
- 23:24a larger point. We've talked in the past,
- 23:27certainly rounders in the town about toxic friendship, the OM
- 23:32and we're, you know, that's my boy from the back days.
- 23:34And we got to do this. What I found kind of refreshing,
- 23:36and maybe it's a weird take away, but the friendship that
- 23:39these two have is something we should all aspire to in a weird
- 23:43way. It's nothing but supportive.
- 23:46And when it isn't, you like that.
- 23:48When it's not, it's clearly for the laughs.
- 23:51Like Europe. Pathetic loser.
- 23:53That is a funny line and obviously not serious because
- 23:56they're both just got fired. So you're able to like, jab and
- 24:00RIP somebody. That's good friendship.
- 24:01Yeah, and every idea that either one of them have throughout the
- 24:04whole movie and we'll get to it is met with more often than not.
- 24:09Awesome. Let's do it.
- 24:10Now, I'm not sure who you'd want to put in charge of finances
- 24:15between these friends slash I think it's.
- 24:17Clear after this particular exchange that Lloyd is not your
- 24:20guy. Hey, go get some snacks and
- 24:23drinks and whatever. Essentials, essentials.
- 24:26And he's got a. Fireworks maybe, I don't know.
- 24:29What? He's fireworks?
- 24:29Got a bowl of bat? He's having a good time with the
- 24:31big cowboy hat. It's so silly, but it's funny to
- 24:34me. What is the least important
- 24:36thing to buy right now? Essential thing you could buy?
- 24:38And the insults, lady. Yes, well, useless drag on our
- 24:42economy. I mean not wrong.
- 24:45But the issue of this movie can have, and again, I don't have an
- 24:50issue with it really, but we have someone who's that dumb to
- 24:53say something somewhat intelligent.
- 24:55Sure can be a bit of an issue because we actually do get a
- 25:00serious scene 30 seconds later where Lloyd is fed up with this
- 25:06life. Yeah, they go and the mob kills
- 25:10the bird because they break into the house, right?
- 25:12They do the thing. How do they know?
- 25:13I guess they do the thing that that is an action.
- 25:16That's a sociopath. Snaps the neck of a good guy,
- 25:20Mike Starr. He's not presented to be.
- 25:21No, I suppose. So he's not like.
- 25:23He doesn't. He has an honor system though.
- 25:24You don't kill people you don't know.
- 25:26That's true. Kills birds no problem, no
- 25:27questions. But you gotta have a code.
- 25:29There you go it, Ace Ventura. There's the one moment I told
- 25:32you that I was like, oh, he's actually an actor, or at least
- 25:36is capable of emitting something other than just pure silliness.
- 25:40Yeah, when it comes to apologize here, he gets a couple of those
- 25:43moments and I thought he delivers them incredibly well.
- 25:46I don't disagree. It's beautiful.
- 25:49My question is can someone that dumb have that much emotional
- 25:53awareness or would he would just be frustrated?
- 25:56Now you, you tell me. This scene has always stood out
- 26:00for me, like, oh, he's just being completely somebody else
- 26:03in this moment. But it is nice and it's
- 26:05necessary to drive their motivation to get up and go and
- 26:10to get Harry on his side. Think OK, I'm going to be.
- 26:13That supportive friends and I think part of it is performative
- 26:18because it is only really to get Harry on board.
- 26:22It's self-serving. I want to go to Aspen because I
- 26:25just saw the girl I love and you know, all this other stuff and I
- 26:27got her suitcase and how best to get Harry on board.
- 26:32Oh, I know. I'll talk about our birds.
- 26:34Heads are falling off. Tired of being this and I'm
- 26:37tired of being nobody. Yeah, the first part I got
- 26:39because he's frustrated that. So whether that's true and he
- 26:42actually feels those things or not, I don't know, because I do
- 26:46feel there's a potential that it's just there so that he can
- 26:49convince Harry and it shined on. He's not that smart.
- 26:52Come on now, give him way too much credit for.
- 26:54Sure. Yeah, maybe what's great about
- 26:56the scene too, is, you know, like a good seed.
- 26:59Really going to do a garden this year.
- 27:01Oh wow. But they plant 1.
- 27:03Like Ray Walston and Star Trek. Exactly.
- 27:07Really inspired. Matt.
- 27:09Matt, Mike Starr has an ulcer problem.
- 27:13Yes. And they lay it on pretty thick.
- 27:15Yes. But it works out really well
- 27:17because they leave a note when they leave for the gas man.
- 27:21Yeah. It's like all.
- 27:21They must been following us for weeks.
- 27:23How do they know it got gas? That's clever.
- 27:25Yeah, this same scene. I know something for the very
- 27:27first time. They're leaving and there's a
- 27:29guy just pissing outside. I don't know why I noticed this
- 27:32for the first time. I don't know what it means.
- 27:34Is just a guy against the wall taking leak he didn't catch.
- 27:37That no, I didn't notice that at all.
- 27:39But I did notice that Kerry had an extra 25 bucks in his pocket.
- 27:43He bought some snacks already. Get that money something.
- 27:48Billy in Farsi? Yeah, What a forsee.
- 27:51What a weird name. I don't know why Billy in 4C.
- 27:55Oh my gosh, David what? He's Billy in 4C in the apt 4C.
- 28:02Wow, who's the dumb one now? I honestly thought he was
- 28:05referring to two people. Billy in 4C oht.
- 28:09Man, he's in four Season 4. See, that's looked at Billy in
- 28:124C. That's embarrassing.
- 28:13Yeah, wow. Probably doesn't make it.
- 28:17Dumb I am. The blind kid in 4C gets.
- 28:23Pretty bird, pretty bird. Stupid.
- 28:26Not a very nice guy, but hey, you got to make the 25 bucks
- 28:30because you're going to have to eat on this long journey.
- 28:36And here I think, correct me if I'm wrong, Phillip, I typically
- 28:40typically am. This is the real big showcase
- 28:43moment. We're really trying to have a
- 28:45full scene of funny. There's nothing about this scene
- 28:47that isn't funny. You're right.
- 28:49First we have Hey Flow, a good reference to Alice doesn't Live
- 28:52Here Anymore. Well, see, I didn't get that.
- 28:54Oht Never. Mel's Diner.
- 28:55No, no. OK, well flow is a reference to
- 28:58that. They're giddy.
- 28:59They are giddy and has my second favorite line of the movie.
- 29:03What's the soup de jour? It's the soup of the day.
- 29:06She's not wrong sounds. Good.
- 29:08Yeah, that's. What a great exchange.
- 29:10Yeah, I've used that again, as the kids say, lives rent free in
- 29:13my house. I love that line, but sea bass
- 29:15is obviously. Sea bass.
- 29:16Yeah. How many times have I heard kick
- 29:18his ass sea bass? And why is Camilla in this
- 29:20movie? That's what I want to know.
- 29:21Why did he choose to be in this? Film.
- 29:23I think he's from Rhode Island. You're right, he is American
- 29:26because he always played for team so I say that is correct.
- 29:29Well, America is pretty big specific to Rhode Island, but
- 29:32yes, the film makers are from Rhode Island and I think that
- 29:35they have a connection to him that way.
- 29:37That's interesting character choice.
- 29:39Totally. It was, I think, still playing
- 29:41in 94. 94 Yeah, I think so. I'm not positive, but I'm not
- 29:45positive either. Check the NHL archives.
- 29:47Yeah, he was certainly past his prime.
- 29:50He's not peeking in 94. That's right.
- 29:53You crossed fifty. Goal scorer.
- 29:55Yeah, it was pretty, pretty big. Deal no cup, though.
- 29:57Never a cup? What happened to play for
- 29:58Boston? McDavid doesn't have a cup, So
- 30:00what do you say? Yeah, he's played like a third
- 30:02of the career that Camille had, but.
- 30:05Now this salt rule. Oh yeah, did they just get that
- 30:08wrong? I don't remember exactly what
- 30:09these superstitions are. I get them mixed.
- 30:11Up. It's definitely spilled.
- 30:12The salt is bad luck. For sure.
- 30:14OK, but what do you do over your shoulder?
- 30:16Is that where salt over your shoulder?
- 30:17But he just threw the whole shaker.
- 30:18That's the that's the OK got it. Wasn't sure where I fell into
- 30:22the how much I know versus how much Lloyd knows I don't want to
- 30:26be. Compared, we have to do a
- 30:27ranking and that's going to be a problem.
- 30:29And Lloyd has never averse to throwing him under the bus.
- 30:33His good friend Harry, he's a bit of a coward.
- 30:35That's the thing. But it's like in a playful way,
- 30:37which I really enjoy. Yeah, actually, this is probably
- 30:39the most toxic moment right here.
- 30:41Fair is leaving him to fend for himself against the great sea
- 30:44bass. Yes.
- 30:45Which is? I'd like to know where that
- 30:46nickname. Maybe it's his favorite meal.
- 30:48Sea bass. They had it in Jurassic Park, if
- 30:50you remember, with chili or chili in sea bass.
- 30:53We don't know. Yeah, that was a big loogie.
- 30:56Oh my gosh, so. Green Actually, they had a stunt
- 31:01lugey to do that doesn't it wasn't his real Dougie.
- 31:05Couldn't get all that mustered. Up he takes the burger away from
- 31:07him. Now we know.
- 31:08Harry isn't dumb enough to eat it.
- 31:11He does his delivery of. I thought, well, maybe I was
- 31:13going, no, you haven't, That's great.
- 31:15But a sea basket to eat that because he takes it.
- 31:18Would you eat your? Own.
- 31:19Not like that. Not like that.
- 31:21Little bit of spit. Sure it happens, but.
- 31:23Not you want to mix. If you've goofed it up like
- 31:25that, I'm taking a hard. Pass eat around it if it's
- 31:28centralized. Peter is incredible.
- 31:31I might find a way, but I wouldn't otherwise.
- 31:33Well, like a drastic park, they found a way.
- 31:39But Lloyd has a moment of pretty good intelligence here.
- 31:43This is a good move. I like, gosh, genius move.
- 31:45But right after that, Harry is praising him.
- 31:48Great move. I saw it in a movie, Lloyd says.
- 31:52And then he says how it turned out, like he slit his throat,
- 31:54like up the road. That's funny.
- 31:56That is one of my least favorite scenes in the movie, actually.
- 32:00Not really a little harsh. What I hate about it is it's
- 32:03akin to a line in Surviving Christmas where it's one of the
- 32:08few things I don't like about the movie, where at some point
- 32:11Affleck approaches Christina Applegate and says something
- 32:13about, oh, spoil the big secret, didn't you?
- 32:16That line doesn't get said unless it's to provoke the next
- 32:20response. And so for someone to say, oh,
- 32:23at the end of that movie, they probably got away Scott free,
- 32:27that is not a line that would follow that it would just end
- 32:30with I saw it in a movie once. Oh, how did it end?
- 32:32Maybe maybe you asked that question, but you wouldn't have
- 32:35said, oh, well, they probably got away Scott free and no harm,
- 32:38you know, like you're setting it up to be the opposite.
- 32:40And that feels lazy. That feels like an epic. 100%
- 32:44I'm fine with. It OK as long as you recognize.
- 32:46That I'm happy to to nitpick away, but the difference is I
- 32:48can say that and still like the movie.
- 32:50You would find that and maybe say I'm out off my.
- 32:54Shelf. Right then and there use for
- 32:55this movie. But anyway, so that is a line
- 32:59that I just think it's only there to set up the joke,
- 33:01whereas other ones feel far more organic.
- 33:12Harland Williams fan. No, except for this movie.
- 33:17OK, I loved him in this movie. I don't know who he was.
- 33:19I don't really know who he is after.
- 33:20It has no chin. Chin less, I think mostly stand
- 33:24up. OK, He's in with that crowd.
- 33:27Was he on SNL? No, not that crowd.
- 33:29Just different crowds. Just comedians.
- 33:32He's not a guy recognized at all.
- 33:34I just I loved him in this one role.
- 33:36I thought it was great. My question is, why don't you
- 33:40just pull over? There's no reason.
- 33:42Given, no, it's not like you're so pressed for time you won't
- 33:45get there, sure, but what's another minute?
- 33:472 minutes, 3 minutes, whatever. But it does lend to a pretty
- 33:50funny scene. Do you?
- 33:51Like this type of comedy has to pee so badly and so much that he
- 33:56fills 5-6 bottles. Like the exaggeration style.
- 34:01Technically speaking, this is my big issue with Liar Liar and
- 34:03it's my big issue with Jim Carrey in general is the
- 34:06oversized nature of the jokes undermine the quality of the
- 34:12jokes. To me that is funny if it were
- 34:14two bottles or it's 3 tops at most.
- 34:17Right, But then it becomes unbelievable.
- 34:19The moment you go from 1 bottle to the second bottle.
- 34:22That's hilarious. That's funny that he's holding.
- 34:265 Sure. It's like so extreme.
- 34:28It's so silly. But I don't like it hits that.
- 34:30Though no and it's unnecessary so I find it actually less funny
- 34:33the more it goes. 2 makes me laugh because you get the payoff
- 34:36of Oh my God, you got to give me another one Like Oh my God
- 34:40that's. Hilarious Hartland's reaction to
- 34:42like that. That, yeah, gets me, got me 30
- 34:45years ago, got me again. Interesting.
- 34:46Just really funny. It's a throwaway moment, too.
- 34:49Like, obviously it's important, but it's small.
- 34:51It makes me. Left.
- 34:53Has it ever happened to? You drink pee.
- 34:57Allegedly a party that I didn't go to, weren't invited to.
- 34:59I would say that I just wasn't cool and somebody had pissed in
- 35:04a bottle and put it in the fridge and somebody drank it.
- 35:07I don't know if it's true. I wasn't there.
- 35:10Did you know this is a? Little factoid about old Phil
- 35:13here. Your Co host that I would
- 35:15suggest that probably my least favorite word in the English
- 35:19language. Piss is piss.
- 35:21I hate every time I hear it. It's such a vulgar term to me.
- 35:24I'd rather somebody say cunt. Yeah, you have mentioned.
- 35:27This before then that. Word.
- 35:28Now I have to rate this episode. Thanks.
- 35:30You said that I do it anyway. Either here or any other word.
- 35:34So I wouldn't drink it. I wouldn't say it.
- 35:37If you had to do one of them though.
- 35:38That's the question. That's a good question.
- 35:40Leave that for the imagination folks.
- 35:42And of course, like feel like any long road trip.
- 35:44I'm not sure if you've been on a lot or or if you've seen Road
- 35:47trip. I've not seen road trip but I've
- 35:49been on many. You typically switch drivers if
- 35:51you can. Sometimes I feel like being the
- 35:53hero and when me and my wife go to Toronto I do the whole way
- 35:56there. Sure, a small chunk of the way
- 35:58back. I feel like you're losing in
- 36:00that equation doing 60% of the. Drive but I get the best part of
- 36:04the drive. It's the last couple hours home.
- 36:07That's right, you can stretch out, tap a nap.
- 36:10There you go. Yeah, that's fair.
- 36:11All that is to say, Jim Carrey's behind the wheel.
- 36:13Yes. And maybe it's good that you
- 36:17don't drive because you are a daydreamer.
- 36:19I'm a nodder. But this dream sequence?
- 36:21It's kind of fun. Oh, I love it.
- 36:24Many things happened, which is. Well, you've really nailed it.
- 36:28I have and I was on the edge of their.
- 36:31Seat, I want you to tell me what your favorite part is.
- 36:33The heart punch. Yeah, that's a tough one to be.
- 36:35Well, second, actually. Yeah, give me your second one
- 36:37because that is like, that's just so over the top.
- 36:39You putting in the doggy bag and handing it to him.
- 36:40OK, Give me number. Two number two is Lauren
- 36:42Halley's. Ass I meant for funny so that
- 36:46there is that. The third, I guess if I had to
- 36:50pick, is not so much the funny part itself, but rather the
- 36:55reaction to it. Jim Carrey doing this, which an
- 37:00audio podcast is a challenge, but when he is laughing and
- 37:04pointing, yeah, with his guns sort of back-to-back, that to me
- 37:08is the yeah, maybe the third. I don't know.
- 37:13Upper to all of that is him just throwing the chips in his face.
- 37:16Yeah, that's something I would do.
- 37:18Sure. Whatever you see in front of
- 37:19you, you're going to make something out of me.
- 37:22Now we have our first pit stop, Phillip.
- 37:24Now you love bathtubs. I haven't had a bath since
- 37:27you're a father. I'm not a bath.
- 37:28I. Actually, my wife mentioned the
- 37:30other day, it's been a while since we've had a bath.
- 37:32That's pretty personal. But together.
- 37:35Well, wait, so Jacuzzi. It's Yeah, it's it's designed
- 37:37for two people. This is another example of Jim's
- 37:42character Lloyd being the alpha. But overall the scene is kind of
- 37:47dumb. Yeah, but it serves a purpose to
- 37:50lay down another seed is Harry had a girlfriend.
- 37:54Yeah. That girlfriend cheated on him,
- 37:57but he doesn't know who. Yeah, and judging from Lloyd's
- 38:00reaction, it might have been him.
- 38:01Yes. Other than that, I have no real
- 38:04purpose for the scene. Yeah, I think it's a really dull
- 38:07scene, and it's strictly there for that, because I don't think
- 38:09the jokes work. Even then, I don't know how well
- 38:11they work. The pacing feels weird too, like
- 38:13at the cutting. If you watch it again, it feels
- 38:16stale. Like it feels like these two are
- 38:17just sitting there waiting for somebody to say the other thing.
- 38:20You could cut it out, Yeah. The only thing it's before is
- 38:24that. To to set the seed for later
- 38:26like. Exactly when you probably could
- 38:27have done that in the van. Yeah, you could have that
- 38:30conversation in any other environment and the whole road
- 38:33trip to have a convo. We don't need to take a pit stop
- 38:36other than just I guess to make fun of gay people like haha,
- 38:40you're naked in a tub or not, you know, whatever else.
- 38:42We do find out that Nicholas is gay.
- 38:44Just kidding, he's the bad guy. Yes, the big reveal.
- 38:47Just to us the. Audience Charlie Rock.
- 38:50It's a very sad story. In general.
- 38:52I don't go too much into it, but he was on SNL.
- 38:56I didn't know that. Yeah, in 1985, OK.
- 38:59And 85, yeah, 85 doesn't matter. And he, he's one of the sort of
- 39:06lead guys. He's doing Weekend Update and at
- 39:091 episode at the end of it, they were doing this runner
- 39:12throughout. It was around the time of Dallas
- 39:13Jr. got shot. I heard about that.
- 39:15So he says at some point in the final moments and he's in a
- 39:19chair, he's all bandaged up. He said I just want to know who
- 39:21fucking shot me and they fired him.
- 39:23And he ends up kind of popping up in Moonlighting and popping
- 39:26up in a couple of shows and television over the years.
- 39:28And this obviously didn't end up walking out to Central Park and
- 39:32killing himself soon after this. Like he's never got his career
- 39:35kind of back. And that was kind of a sad
- 39:38story. He's kind of a non factor in
- 39:41this movie. Yeah, the movie is so clearly
- 39:43Harry and Lloyd and this road trip that the reason for the
- 39:46bag, you have to have one. But it's such a non thing that
- 39:50this guy really gets 2 scenes, maybe 3 in the whole movie and
- 39:53does nothing really you know? No no, it was nice to see him
- 39:56though because I liked him in on SNL.
- 39:58Bet you appreciate this next scene.
- 40:01Yeah, in the van, of course, about betting.
- 40:04That is the humor that this movie for all of the big
- 40:07performances and all the shit jokes that happened later and
- 40:11the gay jokes that happened before, the big bold things like
- 40:14we're going to see with the mustard and ketchup and stuff.
- 40:18This is the stuff that really works for me.
- 40:21Uh huh. Is I'll give you 5 to 1.
- 40:24No, you're not gonna do it. You can't make me bet. 12:50 OK,
- 40:27you're not going to do it. And even Jim Carrey is like, I
- 40:30don't know how I'm going. To get you.
- 40:32Right. Like, it's subtle, it's quiet,
- 40:33it takes 45 seconds. It's as funny as shitting
- 40:38yourself on it, you know what I mean?
- 40:40Like that kind of stuff. It fits into that.
- 40:43Well, this puts the dumb and Dumber like this.
- 40:46That's it. There it is, this of that
- 40:48moment. That's what this title is, is.
- 40:50That yeah, neither one of them can figure out that they are
- 40:53actually doing the thing. They said they were going to.
- 40:55Have you hitchhiked? You live in the country?
- 40:58I figured it comes with the territory.
- 41:00No, I haven't. But it's more acceptable.
- 41:02Like you were more prone to pick somebody up is a little bit
- 41:05safer. Like my dad's pick somebody up,
- 41:07but he knew who the guy was. Son of Yeah.
- 41:11So you have an inkling that you might know the guy and just
- 41:13needs a ride somewhere. Sure, but you don't really see
- 41:15them anymore. No, I mean they're all dead.
- 41:18That's right. You can do the Ubers, right?
- 41:20And you're like never lost anymore.
- 41:21You're never needing. I know, but I I've heard so many
- 41:23horror stories of like the owner of Coors Light for example.
- 41:28I don't know if you know this story.
- 41:30Rich guy, bad guy, fakes his car being broken down and this guy
- 41:37pulled over on a narrow bridge, didn't really have anywhere to
- 41:39go, and he was supposed to kidnap him.
- 41:41That ultimately killed him by mistake because he tried to run
- 41:43away. But I'm always in fear of
- 41:46stopping to help somebody. And that person is setting you
- 41:48up for robbery or something like that, so I don't stop.
- 41:51It's like Silence of the Lambs, right?
- 41:52Help me with the couch. Go.
- 41:53Give you. Yeah, Yeah, exactly.
- 41:55But he's going to go with his instincts here.
- 41:56Yeah, he's feeling pretty good about this, which, again, is
- 41:59funny. Totally.
- 42:00Mike Starr might. Regret it, though.
- 42:01This whole plot doesn't matter, but the fact they're trying to
- 42:04get ahead of them. These guys are dumb.
- 42:05They don't know anything and they're always like, oh, the
- 42:07masterminds, the gas man, we gotta get ahead of these guys.
- 42:09And they get in the truck and that's Mike stories thinking
- 42:12like, I got it made, now I'm in. Yeah.
- 42:14And just the level of like, I want to shoot myself in the face
- 42:19as an audience member. Oh, it's rough.
- 42:21I want to shoot myself in the face.
- 42:23Yeah. No back seats.
- 42:24No, this most annoying sound, double stamp.
- 42:28It's funny, but I don't think it's funny.
- 42:30I don't funny. There's like. 10 seconds of what
- 42:32I like. Yeah, the only part actually I
- 42:34find amusing is the sing along. Oh, wait, with the Mexicans.
- 42:39Yeah, can I say? That Yeah, OK, they're Mexicans.
- 42:41OK, Yeah, if you're. OK, I think you say Chinaman.
- 42:44Well, because there you would say that the Chinese people.
- 42:46OK, gotcha. I just got the nuances man.
- 42:49It's all subtle, but yeah. Anyway.
- 42:52Singing Mockingbird mock, Yeah. Bird.
- 42:56Yeah. Bird.
- 42:58Yeah, got it. Yeah, that's.
- 43:00Good. And it's a reference a little
- 43:02bit maybe intentional to Vacation, which another road
- 43:04trip movie where they sing that song and then again the Mexicans
- 43:08and there see he had just genius.
- 43:13So that part I really like. But all the annoying stuff
- 43:16annoying. Yeah, well, I mean.
- 43:17As it was supposed to so the serves its purpose absolutely.
- 43:20But luckily Mike Starr gets some relief and he goes they go for
- 43:24dinner. I thought it was lunch.
- 43:27Could have been lunch and check the time you're you're in charge
- 43:29of. That truck stop was the name
- 43:31without the sea. It's clever.
- 43:34Sure. Yeah, no C's allowed.
- 43:37You can take the heat. I know pepper wise.
- 43:40No, I am a I'm I'm a softie. You're a softie.
- 43:42I can do it. I can.
- 43:43People are impressed, OK? My wife goes to bat for me, too.
- 43:46He's like, yeah, my husband. You're playing ball and she's
- 43:48going to. Bat Yeah, absolutely.
- 43:49Yeah, She she's impressed and she'll tell her family members.
- 43:52Y'all know he can handle it. OK, I can now.
- 43:54Is that common? The food you're eating is spicy
- 43:56and she's celebrating that fact. No.
- 44:00So why is he? Why is she defending you to her
- 44:01parents? Is not defending.
- 44:03This is my husband, he's really good at eating spice.
- 44:06A source of pride because there's not much else to go on,
- 44:10OK? I'm not good at a lot.
- 44:11So anything she can find that's impressive, she's going to brag,
- 44:15OK. Respect, respect.
- 44:18I don't even have that. I can't even.
- 44:20Do you have other things, buddy? Dig deep.
- 44:22Enough. Someone's going to have to.
- 44:25Ultimately, the best part of this is the ketchup and mustard.
- 44:28Especially with Lloyd. He's not even getting in his
- 44:30mouth. He's like I'll be takes.
- 44:33You think like what a mess, right?
- 44:35Like you got to get that pretty much on the first take.
- 44:37Yeah, I would hope. Yeah.
- 44:38Or yeah, you just deal with whatever it is.
- 44:40And maybe that's why he didn't get any in his mouth.
- 44:42And it doesn't matter because it's so funny, I imagine.
- 44:44What, Jim Carrey, They're able to get a lot of stuff.
- 44:47Like he he's just in the zone. Totally.
- 44:49I would imagine they just use it now.
- 44:52I do question Mike Starr like I don't.
- 44:56Everything he does and he said. Well, he's the only other
- 44:59character that I like from performance Makes sense.
- 45:02But they put Peppers on it. But he doesn't really take a big
- 45:05bite. And does he get much of that in
- 45:06the mouth as he does that? Would that happen again?
- 45:09It doesn't matter, I know, but I'm bringing it up so you like
- 45:11it does matter, but it doesn't matter.
- 45:13But it does matter. But just hilarious. 2 minutes
- 45:17early is on the phone call. I got these guys taken care of.
- 45:19We're good. Don't.
- 45:20Worry. Here's the rat poison I have
- 45:22here. They're not going to be talking
- 45:23for much longer. Yeah, genius.
- 45:26So, like, that kind of stuff works for me and my story.
- 45:28Yeah, he plays that role. He did.
- 45:30He's dead now. Not in real life.
- 45:31I think in real life too. Oh, too bad.
- 45:33Thanks for bringing it up. Oh well.
- 45:35Sorry, maybe a lot of ulcers. Maybe could have been.
- 45:38Playing a real deal? That's right.
- 45:39But they leave the scene of a crime.
- 45:41Yeah, well, crime. You're not a crime, but
- 45:45certainly an accident. Someone was poisoned and that
- 45:48figure out who bringing the feds.
- 45:50Yeah. Kind of ridiculous, but
- 45:51whatever. We get to meet Victoria Rowell.
- 45:54Did you recognizer? Oh, what are we doing here,
- 45:57Phil? I watch the audience.
- 45:58I watched Young and the. Restless for years.
- 46:01Drusilla, Drucilla and Neil. Yeah, and cricket.
- 46:05Another sad story. Neil Yeah, suicide.
- 46:08Yeah, I didn't know. I want to say 5-6 years ago
- 46:12maybe, yeah. You just don't know.
- 46:15You never know. Great show though.
- 46:17Oh yeah, that's Jack. Hasn't changed a bit.
- 46:19Of course not. They have so much makeup on, of
- 46:22course, so much work. Yeah, they did then.
- 46:24I love it. Lauren still looks great.
- 46:25I honestly have not watched Young and Restless for many
- 46:28years but I was literally watching every day I was PBR.
- 46:32I remember you saying, yeah, I love that show.
- 46:34I watch it every day too. Is that because it was on
- 46:35afternoon 430? Yeah, I watch Days of Our Lives.
- 46:38For a long time I would miss school and stuff but it's at 1
- 46:40so that's exactly you have to miss school to watch.
- 46:42It I didn't bother with Bold and the Beautiful, you know, they're
- 46:44in the same world, which I appreciate.
- 46:47Brad Carlton or the actor that played Brad in Young Larissas is
- 46:50still playing a character in Bold and Victoria, the original
- 46:53Victoria is still playing somebody else in bold.
- 46:56So they're there, but not as in. Love the original Victoria.
- 46:58Heather. Tom.
- 46:59Oh my. God still working.
- 47:01The great thing is, if you missed Young and the Restless,
- 47:03you could watch it the next day at 12:30 on three.
- 47:06Yeah, because they were a day behind because of some holiday
- 47:10in 25 years. 80 big story when I read that.
- 47:15But all that is to say we have a gas station scene where he meets
- 47:20Drucilla and and I worked at a gas station like you work in.
- 47:23Airport too, and your peak. Absolutely.
- 47:25I was working at a gas station, so there's things that would
- 47:27prevent this from happening. So is it going to stay on my
- 47:30shelf? I don't.
- 47:31Know. But it's just too funny.
- 47:33Yeah, it's great. Particularly what happens after.
- 47:35Obviously that's a little silly, but the way it goes.
- 47:37Yeah. What's your favorite part of
- 47:38this? Like this tiny little section?
- 47:40I just love him yelling at her, getting the phone number.
- 47:43Yeah, his eyes. His eyes.
- 47:44That's it. Just tell me that God damn
- 47:46number. That's the take away from the.
- 47:47Scenes whole Cam Neely stuff. And again, just like gay humor
- 47:51for. The sake, yeah, it's just bad.
- 47:52Wasn't a big fan of that. I don't think I don't think I.
- 47:55Ever liked it? No, you know, it's you know, I
- 47:57think it's funny that you see the clock, the clock and like
- 48:00that it's him being him, all of it around.
- 48:03It isn't really interesting. But but for sure, looking at
- 48:05that, you're reading the thing and and looking at it.
- 48:08That's funny. And give me the damn number,
- 48:11Bill. And he's like shaking it off.
- 48:12Like, all that stuff is really funny to me.
- 48:14Yeah. But the journey must continue.
- 48:15That's right. And now we get the next moment
- 48:18for me is the pulling over into the 711 as they're ready to
- 48:22depart. This is my favorite line in the
- 48:23whole. Movie.
- 48:24Oh, I've no idea what it would be then.
- 48:27Jim Carrey comes out. He's holding a bunch of things,
- 48:29and he looks over at these two guys just standing and he says,
- 48:34big gulps, eh? Dead silence.
- 48:37Well, see you later. And then he leaves.
- 48:41Such a throwaway I don't understand.
- 48:43It I didn't get her. Actors.
- 48:44I don't know if those are like just random.
- 48:46People, is there something more? Than they're more than there.
- 48:48Well, I don't know but if it is just big gulps, eh well see you
- 48:53later. Funniest thing in the world.
- 48:56I've laughed at it all the time. At the video store we would play
- 48:58this video fairly often and me and my good buddy Lee, we would
- 49:03just crap ourselves. And our friend Leanne, she would
- 49:07say you don't really chaps my ass because that's used in this
- 49:09movie too. So those two lines kind of
- 49:12transcended the movie and lasted for long, long time.
- 49:14I still will now enjoy say something and if they don't
- 49:17reply or respond. I've done that.
- 49:19Well, see you later. Yeah, I've taken something
- 49:21that's so not interesting, like, oh, you're doing this.
- 49:24Hey. Oh.
- 49:25Cool. Let's see.
- 49:26Yeah, Yeah. Anyway, just my favorite line.
- 49:29Well, that's crazy, but I respect it.
- 49:31Yeah, what isn't respectful, really, is John Denver lying to
- 49:34the public. They shouldn't do that.
- 49:36So he's messing around with his meat stick and he's fucking
- 49:38around with Harry. Lloyd makes the wrong call.
- 49:42He goes to Nebraska. A fork in the road, and one part
- 49:46has you basically going the complete opposite direction.
- 49:48Yeah, it sucks for six hours. Yeah, that's five hours, I
- 49:52believe. Yeah, I love it.
- 49:56It's hilarious. But we also get another fight
- 49:58where friends should be able to fight with one another and say,
- 50:00like, you made a bonehead move here, this is stupid, it was a
- 50:02big mistake, and we're not helpful.
- 50:04And maybe, you know, we're six hours the other direction, got
- 50:06no money, got no gas, we got no time, you know, blah, blah.
- 50:08Blah, five hours, but. I love it.
- 50:10I love the blow up. I think it's legitimate.
- 50:12It's great. And I think Kerry kind of
- 50:14pleading like you have never made a mistake like.
- 50:15He's always emotionality and that point.
- 50:17Yeah, he's really like the scene the.
- 50:19Music that's crash test at that point.
- 50:21I wrote that down, but it comes through.
- 50:24Yeah, and that's another good example.
- 50:26That's so stupid. It's so dumb, but it's that full
- 50:29support thing. Yeah.
- 50:30You get the scooters. I got 70 miles to gallon on this
- 50:32hog and you want to get on board?
- 50:34This movie does this a few times, but just the you know,
- 50:37you think you're and you're wonderful or whatever like and
- 50:40you totally redeem yourself. The reality of getting to Aspen,
- 50:45knowing how far away they are on that little bike is completely
- 50:48so unbelievable that you just have to believe it.
- 50:52Yeah, you just do they just. There's no reason to argue it,
- 50:56but ultimately. But to do 12 hours in like 1
- 50:59minute, but just go, just go. I didn't think of this till now.
- 51:03Is that he didn't want to pull over for him earlier.
- 51:05True. Yeah, I guess it's only it's
- 51:07fair. Yeah, no bottles.
- 51:08But yeah, when they're on like the curve.
- 51:10And you've just got all the vehicles, vehicles behind.
- 51:12They're in the freezing out. I love this whole.
- 51:14Sequence. The best part is when he says he
- 51:15got a little bit chilly back there and they're just like they
- 51:18got the snot. It's frozen.
- 51:19Obviously he's frozen, the piece frozen.
- 51:21See what I did there? I said pee.
- 51:23Yeah, you're welcome. Weird there.
- 51:26It's a great. Collapse over.
- 51:28Yeah. So yeah, we're finally in Aspen,
- 51:30California. Again.
- 51:32That was another geography joke earlier, and again, I don't.
- 51:36Know who cares? And Harry said something, oh I
- 51:38hate the French and they weren't French like so that well went to
- 51:42a couple times, didn't like it at all.
- 51:43But it's OK, not perfect. Yeah, nothing's wrong, it just
- 51:47doesn't work. For me just wasted on purpose.
- 51:50But here is a line I imagine you may have used but in a serious
- 51:55tone. When you see a man and woman
- 51:57walk by, they both have a nice ass and you say he must work
- 52:02out. I've done that.
- 52:04Yeah, sure. I used to hang around with a
- 52:07buddy in Vancouver and he was dating somebody and he would see
- 52:10someones butt in like a Lululemon or something like that
- 52:13and he would say, Phil, do you want to just slap that ass for
- 52:15me? I can't.
- 52:17I can't. I can't.
- 52:18But please for you. And tell me all about it.
- 52:21No, no, of course not, pussy. Unless an elevator, I'm not.
- 52:25Interested, touché. But now that they're here, they
- 52:29don't really have anywhere to go.
- 52:30That's true, but they feel if they found Mary, yes, she would
- 52:35open up her doors. Of course, after what they
- 52:37shared. Yeah.
- 52:40Problem is, he doesn't remember her last name.
- 52:43Correct this again. It's great.
- 52:45It's this. Is great, but it's not.
- 52:47It's not like laugh out loud necessarily, no.
- 52:51But the fact that he actually says her name and then looks at
- 52:55the briefcase right afterwards. Oh, Samsonite.
- 52:57I was almost right. That started with an S.
- 52:59What I like about this movie, and like you were saying
- 53:02earlier, there's a lot of levels, if you will, to the
- 53:04comedy is that not everything needs to be catch up and mustard
- 53:08streaming into the ceiling and been catching it or broken
- 53:12parrot heads. It can be lines like, well, see
- 53:14you later. It could be lines like Samsonite
- 53:17versus Swanson and whatever else.
- 53:18Like it doesn't have to be big, big stuff.
- 53:20It can be the little stuff too, and it works on all of those
- 53:22levels. Usually once I've seen a movie
- 53:23like this a few times, I'm looking for the smaller stuff
- 53:26and that's obvious. And I'll tell you there's a
- 53:29couple coming up that I'm going to be happy to talk about
- 53:31because that's. Exciting.
- 53:32Yeah. What is also exciting for these
- 53:34guys is their frozen. They've nowhere to go, as you
- 53:37established. They don't know where to begin.
- 53:39We cut the Harry trying to warm up his hands over the fire and
- 53:45he's shaking and he's like, we're screwed, like we're gonna
- 53:47die out here. You could see it coming a mile
- 53:48away, but it just works. Yeah, still funny.
- 53:50I was like, my hands get a little sweaty.
- 53:52You might want those extra gloves and that's just
- 53:55hilarious, but then following up with him choking Lloyds as like
- 53:58in frustration and like your hands are freezing, uh, is
- 54:04hilarious. And the reveal that they find
- 54:06out that the briefcase is full of money and they.
- 54:08Make it so clear that we're going to be.
- 54:11Smart with it totally like just the essentials.
- 54:13Earlier, yeah, exactly. So call them that back and it's
- 54:165 seconds later. I don't know what comes first,
- 54:19if it's the hotel or the car. I think it's the car on the way
- 54:23to the. Hotel car pulls up to the hotel
- 54:25and they have these outfits that are outrageous, totally just
- 54:29gifts. Every movie that's around
- 54:31Christmas, people are always just carrying around gifts.
- 54:33We saw it last week with Sheldrake.
- 54:35People just carrying gifts because that's what you do
- 54:37during Christmas. I suppose so.
- 54:39A little bit of interesting tidbit, if you will.
- 54:41The hotel they pull up to is the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Co.
- 54:46Sure. Noteworthy for two reasons.
- 54:49OK, The first is it is the inspiration for Stephen King's
- 54:55writing The Shining. Interesting.
- 54:58And so enamored of it is he that in 96, I want to say a couple
- 55:02years after this, they made a Shining miniseries that they
- 55:07shot on location at the same hotel.
- 55:09Oh, so this hotel is the reason why The Shining exists at all.
- 55:12Interesting reasons. A little bit.
- 55:13That's something. Yeah.
- 55:14It's gorgeous hotel. Breathtaking, I mean beautiful
- 55:17rooms. Good enough for the King
- 55:18Charles. That's right, yes.
- 55:20Prince Charles at the. Time, Diana.
- 55:23And they were a thing. They were real shame about that.
- 55:27And this is actually at this hotel, this famous hotel.
- 55:30Yeah. Stanley is one of those scenes
- 55:33that I never picked up before and I think it's hilarious.
- 55:36Before they discover Mary Swanson in the newspaper, they
- 55:41are sitting watching the commercial.
- 55:43So long distance commercial and it makes them cry that I already
- 55:48knew. I liked it, still do.
- 55:50But them using the money for Kleenex, sticking it up their
- 55:55nose just to the Max, I never noticed it before.
- 55:59Wow. More than the Lamborghini, more
- 56:01than this fancy hotel that is wasting the money.
- 56:06The other stuff you're using it. Or a function.
- 56:07Yeah, exactly. Yeah, but you're so disregarding
- 56:10of it that you're going to wipe your nose with yeah.
- 56:13Hilarious. And here we find out that Harry
- 56:15may be indeed the smarter one because he can read.
- 56:18That's true. We find out Mary Swanson is
- 56:21going to be out of ball. That's right, a soiree.
- 56:23A soiree for the endangered Arctic owl?
- 56:27Yes, that's correct. Noteworthy.
- 56:29And then we get the little montage.
- 56:31Of been awhile since we've had a montage.
- 56:33Yeah. Like a really good.
- 56:35One montage, Yeah. What do you think about this
- 56:37one? That's hilarious.
- 56:38I like that they get proper haircuts and then immediately go
- 56:40back to their old haircuts. I love the fake cuts when the
- 56:44Barber shaving. Them as good work like do you
- 56:46like the gore I like? I knew it was catching all
- 56:49right. I enjoyed it.
- 56:51That's something that probably 94 I was enjoying a little more
- 56:54than I do now. I asked myself this question.
- 57:06I do that sometimes after a third or fourth watch. 2 owls.
- 57:09Yes, that's a set of two and the joke is made.
- 57:14Nice set of Hooters. Yes.
- 57:17What came first, the idea to have them bowls or the joke of
- 57:22we want to do a joke saying instead of Hooters, oh we need
- 57:25some owls. In the writing, you're in the
- 57:27writing. Interesting.
- 57:28I always wondered like this is probably more we have the owls.
- 57:31Oh this works out great because now we can do this hooter joke.
- 57:34But I often ask myself with these comedic geniuses, when you
- 57:37think of something and then you got to backtrack to make it.
- 57:40Work. We want to do this.
- 57:41A great joke. How do I make it work?
- 57:43Yeah. So I just wonder what like the
- 57:44chicken and the egg? Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 57:45I think you're probably looking at making the joke first in that
- 57:48moment. But that's a good question
- 57:49actually. It's interesting to think.
- 57:50About like if they decide they want to do the set of Hooters
- 57:52joke they have to import these owls.
- 57:55Well, one of those animatronic, they do the animatronics one
- 57:57later right when he turns to the screen when you're about to die
- 58:01animatronics they're. Real.
- 58:03Which again, is funny that they think these guys are
- 58:06professionals. Yeah, look at them.
- 58:07Even killed the owl. Yeah, they've assassinated him.
- 58:09Yeah, it's so funny. But now we get a showcasing.
- 58:12I'm going to send this to you because I know you're a big
- 58:14Terry Garr. Fan I love her and Mr. Mom see a
- 58:18guest and I was right yeah. Love her in friends.
- 58:21One from the heart. One from the heart.
- 58:23OK was she in friends Phoebe's mom or That makes sense.
- 58:26That sounds right. She just died relatively
- 58:28recently too. Not suicide though, so.
- 58:30We doing some comedies lately, but we talk a lot about.
- 58:33Death and mortality. Wow.
- 58:36Great. Now, again, kind of a thankless
- 58:37role didn't do much in this. Shouldn't Tootsie as well.
- 58:39She really good in that. Yeah, she had a good run from
- 58:41like 75 to 80. Five well she played a great
- 58:44lush in this yeah she's great few drinks so.
- 58:46Small role, but yeah. Livers Lloyd convinces Harry to
- 58:51go set up a date for him. So and then shows his ass.
- 58:54Do you remember that? Looks like yours.
- 58:56You have a really nice. Little walking stairs.
- 59:00I mean, Harry just trying to make the date and sees that
- 59:04she's, you know, gorgeous, kind of plays around a little bit,
- 59:08gets a little. Yeah, and he knows that they've
- 59:11done this to. Him correct at this point, he
- 59:13understands. So he's he's he's playing the
- 59:15angles. I respect that you're not
- 59:16Sheldrake levels, but he's I like it And Terry, like this
- 59:20woman hasn't laughed in weeks or months.
- 59:23Like so you need to spend more time with this guy.
- 59:26I'm like, that makes sense. I was just chatting about this
- 59:28the other day, and maybe because you just alluded to it, we were
- 59:30chatting so much about comedies and how there's so much sadness.
- 59:32If not for an ability to have laughs within that, we'd be
- 59:37hopeless. Oht Yeah.
- 59:38Right. Like as humanity.
- 59:39Right. Done.
- 59:40And it's certainly something that gets me through every day.
- 59:42If I can't laugh, then there's. It's what are we doing?
- 59:45Here Exactly, and I think it's an appropriate reason to have
- 59:48Mary, even if it's just a fake date to go on a date with
- 59:53someone that just makes you laugh.
- 59:54I like. That which leads us to a scene
- 59:57in the hotel room, which is going to be my last reference to
- 1:00:02something that didn't notice. Before.
- 1:00:04Subtle humor that's actually quite dark and incredibly
- 1:00:08hilarious. First of all, you have Harry
- 1:00:10wearing that ski suit, which is funny and revealing.
- 1:00:14Very. Small though, but he's going on.
- 1:00:17Lloyd is about how Mary could be the love of his life.
- 1:00:22Yeah. She's the blood in my veins.
- 1:00:24We belong together till the mountains fall into the sea,
- 1:00:28till the heavens collide. And he's really, like,
- 1:00:30passionate and animated and then finishes it off with or until I
- 1:00:34get sick of her and I need to move on.
- 1:00:37And there's something so dark in there.
- 1:00:40Totally. And true.
- 1:00:41Yeah. He spent this whole movie pining
- 1:00:44for this woman and. Lover first sight before it's
- 1:00:47the greatest thing. Oh my God defined her.
- 1:00:49And this is such a human real. They totally, totally.
- 1:00:53I love this. And it echoes what Harry said in
- 1:00:55the hot tub earlier, which was, yeah, she was saying some stuff
- 1:00:58about how I never listened to her.
- 1:00:59I don't know. I wasn't paying attention.
- 1:01:01There is this feeling of like she was everything to me.
- 1:01:03She could have been the one. But also, I don't give a shit.
- 1:01:05Yeah, the duality. But yeah, carry in that moment.
- 1:01:07It's hilarious. That's my favorite scene of the
- 1:01:09movie. Yeah, well, wrap it up.
- 1:01:11It's my favorite of that type. The big entree is about to come
- 1:01:14where I think from a performance and not Lloyd related.
- 1:01:17I think you probably know what I'm talking about, but I don't
- 1:01:19have a lot for this so I'll throw it to you.
- 1:01:22The date itself. I'd like everything about it.
- 1:01:25It reminds me again of surviving Christmas many years later where
- 1:01:27the snowball fight escalates and so forth.
- 1:01:29Certainly did. And then it goes really dark,
- 1:01:31which I like, but sticking his tongue to the chair lift and
- 1:01:34then just like he keeps going around and around around because
- 1:01:37he never actually gets to ski because of it.
- 1:01:38I didn't like that one. I don't know.
- 1:01:41And what is she doing this whole time while he's going around and
- 1:01:43around? She's going to ruin her whole
- 1:01:44day. Gas.
- 1:01:45He's gonna ride the chairlift all day.
- 1:01:47Come on, you take the ski. You're up there.
- 1:01:49Great special effects though, getting that tongue off totally
- 1:01:51unless it was real. I don't think you ever done
- 1:01:53that, though, as a kid. Not to that extent, of course.
- 1:01:56But as a child, of course, I never did.
- 1:01:58We were told not to do that. Yeah.
- 1:01:59Well, I like to rebel. That's.
- 1:02:01Interesting choice, I did that later in life.
- 1:02:03Yeah, yeah. Taking policies, you know,
- 1:02:05taking the nine holes and putting that on your tongue.
- 1:02:08As a child you have not lasted this TikTok era my friend.
- 1:02:11You have been dead from drinking javax or something.
- 1:02:13Yeah, or I would have been better.
- 1:02:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:15You say everybody try this and they're all dying.
- 1:02:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:19But I get the likes. That's dark.
- 1:02:27Sad yeah, Kerry soon after cutting back to him waiting for.
- 1:02:32OHP 10 AM ten. AM I'd be there, of course, but
- 1:02:36his delivery of no and I don't care.
- 1:02:40Beth is another great one that I've used again.
- 1:02:42I've ripped off this movie a lot.
- 1:02:44As you should. Which is followed quickly by a
- 1:02:47scene that was adlibbed. Oht telling that part wasn't OK.
- 1:02:51Yeah, but this part was. When he leaves, yes he sees the
- 1:02:54we landed on the moon picture on the wall that was already there
- 1:02:59that was part of the set already alright.
- 1:03:00And he looked at it and did. That bit was not in the.
- 1:03:03Script. Wow.
- 1:03:04Yeah, That's great. That's surprising.
- 1:03:06Reminds me of Elf. Another Christmas movie.
- 1:03:08Elf or Elf? Elf.
- 1:03:10You have to check the tape where he says the world's best cup of
- 1:03:13coffee walks in. You guys did it.
- 1:03:15That's great. Just the sight gag of that.
- 1:03:17So interesting. This gets ripped off a lot, but
- 1:03:20not me. Not you, not just you.
- 1:03:22You're the only RIP off here. But it's great seeing you waited
- 1:03:25for hours. She never came.
- 1:03:27And he happened to see Gary. Yeah, so he knows.
- 1:03:30He knows, he knows, he deal with it maturely.
- 1:03:33Maturely, as you would expect throughout the movie has a heart
- 1:03:36to heart conversation. Turbo LAX.
- 1:03:38Turbo LAX has like a Ace Ventura moment there with that.
- 1:03:42That's definitely a cross point where Jim Carrey and Asmah and
- 1:03:46Lloyd Christmas all kind of merge into one I.
- 1:03:48Remember in high school someone gave a little bit of mine.
- 1:03:51I don't know what ended up happening there.
- 1:03:53Probably best. That you don't really.
- 1:03:56Part of it, but I felt bad for him because he's a friend of
- 1:03:58mine. But I don't love potty humor.
- 1:04:02No, Generally speaking, no. You're more highbrow.
- 1:04:04Very highbrow brows way up here. This is Jeff Daniels shining
- 1:04:10totally. Well, I'm talking Oscar here.
- 1:04:12Wow. I don't know he takes it took
- 1:04:14for this, but I just loved his performance in the bathroom.
- 1:04:18Really good with the cross eyed thing.
- 1:04:19His hair sells a lot of that behavior.
- 1:04:22He is able to channel that. Kerry is like always that and
- 1:04:28has a history of that. And maybe it is just the novelty
- 1:04:30of Jeff Daniels doing it, I don't know.
- 1:04:32But I agree with you and I don't like oh, here's the shit scene.
- 1:04:35That's not something that excites me.
- 1:04:36I wouldn't get. Yeah, right.
- 1:04:38Generally. Speaking, but in 94, this is the
- 1:04:41tops man and his cross eyed and the sound effects and just his
- 1:04:45old all of it. I'm with you 100%.
- 1:04:48The only part I think is like a little silly and obviously it
- 1:04:51has to happen, but is the like, you know that toilets broken?
- 1:04:54Yeah, contrivance. Even if it wasn't broken, the
- 1:04:57scene is hilarious, Oscar, but it's definitely in there, in
- 1:05:00there for sure. Lloyd takes advantage,
- 1:05:02obviously. His plan, of course, works.
- 1:05:04You have somewhere to be because I can come back, but I have your
- 1:05:07briefcase and we're really in the last 10 minutes here.
- 1:05:10We're bringing it home. This plot was never designed to
- 1:05:12be tight. No or interesting, no or
- 1:05:15anything, or noteworthy or no. But I wrote something down.
- 1:05:17OK, But it kind of falls apart at the end.
- 1:05:21I mean, there's a couple good jokes in there, but we have
- 1:05:24Nicholas who just gives up. Yeah, I'm the bad guy.
- 1:05:28I don't care. Who knows?
- 1:05:29Like, these are not good decisions.
- 1:05:30So at this point, he has to kill them all to maybe have a chance
- 1:05:34to get away, which isn't easy to do.
- 1:05:36He doesn't have a silencer? No.
- 1:05:38Like his getaways. I'm getting a ticket to
- 1:05:39Amsterdam and that's his out. I don't think you're going to
- 1:05:42make it that far. But 250,000, I owe you.
- 1:05:45That's as good as money. That's a keeper.
- 1:05:47You want to hold on, that's funny.
- 1:05:48That is great. Everything for you believe it is
- 1:05:52Totally. Yeah.
- 1:05:53But so that kind of stuff, it's like, I don't even care what's
- 1:05:56happening plot wise. I'm not there for that.
- 1:05:58I'm there for the jokes. And that joke is hilarious.
- 1:06:00That's an IOU, Yeah. And why the FBI has to wait so
- 1:06:04long to come in. They just have to wait for the.
- 1:06:06Joke. Just wait for the.
- 1:06:08Joke. Wait.
- 1:06:08For it, Harry gets shot. Bullet proof vest.
- 1:06:10But what if they shot him in the face?
- 1:06:12And this is Phyllis Big Line. Yeah.
- 1:06:14It's a chance we were willing to take.
- 1:06:15He's such a terrible shot. Like Lloyd is man, you're alive.
- 1:06:19Give it terrible shot, you suck. And at that point, you know,
- 1:06:23Lloyd and Mary have had the conversation about like, what
- 1:06:25does the chance just lay it out, just tell you honestly that out
- 1:06:28when she's like maybe like a million to.
- 1:06:29One this is stuck around for a lot of.
- 1:06:31People so you're telling me there's a chance that's.
- 1:06:33Just I heard that yesterday, Jay said.
- 1:06:35It and then the follow up certainly later where he finds
- 1:06:37out that she's got a husband and he's.
- 1:06:38Like whoa. What was all that talk?
- 1:06:41What is all this million to one shot talk that it does stand the
- 1:06:44test of time today? I I mean, I don't I don't use
- 1:06:46it. I don't like to use other jokes
- 1:06:48that people use all the time. I want to be You're going to
- 1:06:51steal jokes. You want better known jokes?
- 1:06:53Yeah, nobody laughs at yours. I get it.
- 1:06:56I make myself laugh. Pass it off as your own.
- 1:06:59I've done that. I got this bit I give.
- 1:07:02Credit. Credits due.
- 1:07:04I also love the last little button, that dream sequence of
- 1:07:07the husband coming out and like I'd like you to meet Lloyd and
- 1:07:09he's got a. Guy shoots like 5-6 times a
- 1:07:12chest. That's a good little button to
- 1:07:14the whole thing, but ultimately the real end of the movie.
- 1:07:17It goes back to the well that's worked all movie.
- 1:07:19This is I think the third time specifically so it's not
- 1:07:22overused totally. And it's the best of the three.
- 1:07:25So good. This reminds me of Married with
- 1:07:27Children. OK, there's always these
- 1:07:29gorgeous women in the show. Big breasts, bikinis all the
- 1:07:33time. This would never happen in real
- 1:07:34life. It's just for the laughs.
- 1:07:36For the boys. And we need two people to oil
- 1:07:39us. Up and then you're in luck.
- 1:07:41Yeah, there's a town 2 miles that way.
- 1:07:44Another redirection of. Don't you realize what you've
- 1:07:46done? And then we think the audience,
- 1:07:48they figured it out, but we know they know the towns the other
- 1:07:51way. Idiots.
- 1:07:52And then, yeah, one of these days something will happen.
- 1:07:55We'll get our break. I love it.
- 1:07:56It's just, it's hilarious, the movie.
- 1:07:58You tell me. I don't own it.
- 1:08:00That's right. So does it elevate?
- 1:08:02Are you happy just to have the sequel somehow?
- 1:08:05I've watched it enough times where I would say I don't think
- 1:08:10I would pay money to put it on my shelf.
- 1:08:12Like if I saw it in a bargain bin on Blu-ray for 5 bucks,
- 1:08:17yeah, OK, I could make space for that.
- 1:08:19Jim Carrey have a lot of affection for.
- 1:08:21I think he's a comedic genius. I don't read books yet. 50% of
- 1:08:25the books I have are his autobiographies and his books,
- 1:08:27so I would paid a small amount to get it back on my shelf.
- 1:08:32But more so I would watch the sequel even knowing that the
- 1:08:36best parts are in the trailer and I've seen the trailer, I own
- 1:08:39it, it's on my shelf already. I've seen movies before.
- 1:08:42They claim all the good stuff in the trailer and that's not true
- 1:08:44because of that subtle humor. Not everybody gets it or they
- 1:08:47missed it the first time. Sure.
- 1:08:49So I'll go in there with low expectations.
- 1:08:52I'm sure I'll get a laugh or two.
- 1:08:53Like this movie is actually kind of long.
- 1:08:55Yeah, I'm surprised our. $50.52 so I'm hoping the next one a
- 1:09:00little bit shorter, not that a drag necessarily, but it just
- 1:09:03felt a little bit long. The things I enjoyed the first
- 1:09:05time around, I liked again there.
- 1:09:07I pretty much have the same experience I had the last time I
- 1:09:09watched it, which has been about 10-15 years but I think it's age
- 1:09:13relatively. Well, I agree, this of the three
- 1:09:16is the movie I would watch again.
- 1:09:17It's not on my shelf. I don't know.
- 1:09:19To your point, it's the same I I've seen it so often.
- 1:09:22It's like a nice reminder when I watched it this time, but I
- 1:09:27don't know that I'm seeking that reminder anymore often.
- 1:09:29And to your point, the stuff that I love most in this movie
- 1:09:33I've stolen or is in, you know, part of my dirty there.
- 1:09:37So I don't need to watch the movie on some level to get well,
- 1:09:40see you later because it's always.
- 1:09:42There so you don't need to be renewed.
- 1:09:43I don't think so. It's like, so the stuff that I
- 1:09:46love about it there, there was very little in this movie, this
- 1:09:49time, this watch that left me. Like, to your point, you found
- 1:09:53new things. New things.
- 1:09:54Yeah, I didn't. I was like, I knew all the
- 1:09:56beats. So for me, I don't need to see
- 1:09:58it anymore. I feel like I've really got it.
- 1:10:00But I know that at some point I will watch it again, whether it
- 1:10:03be on cable or or whatever, and I'll be reminded of how funny
- 1:10:06those things are. But I was happy to watch it this
- 1:10:09time, as pleased for you to take it off the shelf, even if it
- 1:10:11wasn't actually on your show. Well, tell us what is on your
- 1:10:16shelf, or at least tease what's coming next week that you do
- 1:10:19actually own. Well, I mentioned the split
- 1:10:23screen. From Draft A.
- 1:10:25From draft day, that's right, Depalma fill in Depalma film.
- 1:10:28So we're going to do a diploma film.
- 1:10:30Oh, we actually are going to. Do that, I'll tell you which
- 1:10:32ones modern. OK, that's all I ask for.
- 1:10:35And OK, yeah, it's it's modern and it's got Vigo in it.
- 1:10:41I could look that up easily. Will I use the question?
- 1:10:43That's the question or I want to come in just you.
- 1:10:45Know we're gonna watch the movie about two days so you come in as
- 1:10:49blind as you can. Thanks a lot folks.
- 1:10:51We appreciate you joining us this week and all weeks please.
