- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show and The Yukon
- 0:05Husky. He's got a late night clash coming up on the West Coast and
- 0:08Seattle against Gonzaga, the Bulldogs and the Continental Tires. Seattle tip off the
- 0:13Old Key Arena out their pregame at nine thirty, tip off shortly after ten
- 0:17Eastern here along the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network app, and the
- 0:22Varsity Network dot Com and as if on Q coach Jalen Stewart gave you a
- 0:27nice lift against Arkansas Pine Bluff the other day. He's a Seattle guy.
- 0:31He hadn't played for a couple of games, freshman, trying to you know,
- 0:34get his feet wet and figure it all out. What do you see
- 0:37from him in that game that tells you that had maybe maybe there's a chance
- 0:41he's going to deliver some stuff for us this year. Yeah, he was
- 0:45definitely, you know, Mike, you know, he had an impact.
- 0:48He was assertive, he was you know, he scored the ball the seven
- 0:54you know, seven big points or three buckets there in the first half,
- 1:00and then you know was you know, had a saved us from a three
- 1:03point play on a weak foul by Haas and transition, you know, which
- 1:08was a splash defensive play, and you know, just played with more authority,
- 1:12and you know, he's he's a young player, you know him,
- 1:15and you know, and Jaden Ross in particular, just just trying to keep
- 1:21these guys positive and keep their feet on the ground here in stores and and
- 1:26not get down about their current playing situation. The transfer portal and that extra
- 1:33COVID year haven't made it have made it very tough on on incoming freshmen to
- 1:38get on the court. You know, we still have these COVID players that
- 1:42I think we still got one more year of it. So there's going to
- 1:47be, you know, not a lot of freshmen playing in really good programs
- 1:53in college basketball. And I know he's dying to get on the court and
- 1:59we want them to play. We're working really hard to develop him for both
- 2:04now in the future because we want to get to nine. I don't want
- 2:07to be stuck at eight. I want to, but I'm not going to
- 2:12play nine in less. Nine guys really could play at a championship level basketball.
- 2:20Dan Hurley with listened to ukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Dan you're your
- 2:23postgame press conferences are becoming more and more entertaining. I don't know if you're
- 2:29if it's something you think about at all, but you know, we get
- 2:31into these subjects sometimes in the postgame where there's extra time, there's extra questions
- 2:37after the game stuff, and you start talking about, you know, the
- 2:39world of college basketball and people recruiting your players and people going out of their
- 2:45way to kind of tamper with other teams. I mean, is this stuff
- 2:49happening on a level that we don't know about and you do or what you
- 2:53brought that up a couple of times recently. Yeah, I mean it's going
- 2:57on. I mean, it's going on right now. I mean, if
- 3:00I took some of the freshman's phones or you know, the some of the
- 3:07sophomores, or any of the players, you know, and whether it's a
- 3:10middleman or old AU coach, old high school coach, you know, directly
- 3:15to the family, directly to the player. It was going on with us
- 3:20last year, you know, it went on. You know, it went
- 3:27on with some of our best players schools that wanted them to go into portal
- 3:31that were offering the huge money, uh, you know, to leave you
- 3:37know, over a million dollars to go into portal with nil some very well
- 3:43known programs that are often involved with you know, the free agents that come
- 3:50on to the market in college. So you know, it's, uh,
- 3:53it's unfortunate. It's not the way that that we run our program. I
- 3:57couldn't live with with with myself if that's how I built a roster and built
- 4:01an organization. It's you know, it's embarrassing. The media. Uh,
- 4:06unfortunately, I think is uh, through player empowerment has turned the blind eye
- 4:15to uh, you know what, what's not good for the sport uh and
- 4:19not good for young people in terms of the long term lessons learned. And
- 4:26uh, you know, and I think we we we kind of we're now
- 4:30just handing out the fish in turn of instead of teaching how to fish.
- 4:34And and then for me, you know, listen, I think I see
- 4:39a lot of other coaches just kind of being themselves more, doing a lot
- 4:42less coach talk. So I see other coaches just kind of being themselves.
- 4:47So I think I'm gonna be myself more and and not do the company coach
- 4:53line. And and then also too, I think when you win the national
- 4:57championship, you're a lot more comfortable in your skin and more willing to just
- 5:00say what you think. Yeah, well, we appreciate it. It's entertaining
- 5:05at times. Are we headed in the direction of contracts for players? Is
- 5:11that where this is going? Are we going to have to make guys commit
- 5:15to playing let's say, at Yukon or anywhere else for three years when they
- 5:19come to the school or is that some way to deal with this, this
- 5:25rampant movement of players in the transfer portal. Some guys have played three four
- 5:30schools already in their careers or five or bid in five, right, I
- 5:36mean, so, yeah, I do think, you know, Mike,
- 5:42it protects I think, you know, the players you need need protection,
- 5:47you know, especially if they're lied to from an NIL standpoint. You know,
- 5:53I think promises are made and you hear the horror stories of schools or
- 5:59collect is not coming through or not even close to the numbers that were promised
- 6:04or talked about, you know, And then I do think, uh,
- 6:11you know, if we're headed towards a model of like free a total free
- 6:16agency in this ni L era in terms of the portal and n I L
- 6:24valuation, Yeah, I don't I don't think total free agency works in any
- 6:32sport. You know, I know, and I know the media will say,
- 6:36well coaches, well coaches, Uh, coaches can leave whenever they want.
- 6:42That's not actually what happens. We we we have buyouts if we do,
- 6:48if we do decide that we want to make a move. You know
- 6:51that that that's millions of dollars in some cases three four or five million dollars,
- 6:58eight million dollars to move to know the school. You know, we
- 7:01have contracts, so I know it's not as simple as that, you know,
- 7:06but if we want, you know, if we are now viewing college
- 7:12players as you know, paid employees like I hear. You know, you
- 7:17know from a lot of the you know, the leading voices in college basketball,
- 7:21you know, the players need to be protected. And I do think
- 7:25that, uh you know, the programs do as well. Yeah, No,
- 7:29I agree one hundred percent on that one. Dan Hurley with US Yukon
- 7:31men's basketball coaches that we're back with more in a moment on lear Field,
