- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, so moving on now now, I want to tell
- 0:03Speaker 1: you I've got two short stories here about local youngsters
- 0:06Speaker 1: raising money for a good cause. Back in April, twelve
- 0:10Speaker 1: year old Dexter Dre decided he wanted to do something
- 0:13Speaker 1: for others as his brother Riley has suddenly passed away.
- 0:17Speaker 1: The family placed a bench in Riley's memory on the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Dover Marina Curve. And if you've never been there, when
- 0:23Speaker 1: you look at the seafront, if you look extremely to
- 0:25Speaker 1: the right, there's a peer that runs out there. But
- 0:28Speaker 1: if you just go on the other side of that,
- 0:30Speaker 1: there's what they call the curve and it's a lovely
- 0:32Speaker 1: kind of open venue and it's buzzing in the summer.
- 0:35Speaker 1: They have music events there and stuff like that. So anyway,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Dexter thought to himself, how can I help other families
- 0:42Speaker 1: who might be unable to afford a similar memorial to
- 0:45Speaker 1: love ones that have passed away. Now, he wanted to
- 0:49Speaker 1: cycle from London to Brighton, as he knew his granddad
- 0:51Speaker 1: and friend of mine, mel Kemp, had done it a
- 0:54Speaker 1: couple of times, but he found out that he wasn't
- 0:56Speaker 1: old enough. So it was decided with the help of Meal,
- 0:59Speaker 1: to cycle the same distance fifty four miles up and
- 1:02Speaker 1: down the length of the Dover Seafront, which Dexter successfully
- 1:06Speaker 1: completed and raised four thousand pounds. Dexter has recently been
- 1:10Speaker 1: recognized by the k M Group and the Kent Community
- 1:13Speaker 1: Foundation and been given the Young Volunteer of the Year
- 1:16Speaker 1: Fundraiser Award. And during the week I was chatting with
- 1:19Speaker 1: Dexter's dad, Tim, who they both came into the studio
- 1:23Speaker 1: back in April and we had a brilliant morning with
- 1:25Speaker 1: Dexter telling us his story and we had pictures taken.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Dexter was pretending to be a DJ, a bit like
- 1:31Speaker 1: I do on a Saturday morning sometime. Anyway, Tim told
- 1:35Speaker 1: me that they've purchased and given away trees and bushes
- 1:39Speaker 1: along with memorial plaques the people can plant in their
- 1:42Speaker 1: garden to remember their loved ones. Numerous people have benefited
- 1:47Speaker 1: and they still have some money left over in the
- 1:49Speaker 1: pot which will be added to the fund to pay
- 1:51Speaker 1: for another bench as Dexter plans another challenge. Don't quite
- 1:55Speaker 1: know what it's going to be yet, but we will
- 1:57Speaker 1: keep you informed as soon as I do. So just
- 2:00Speaker 1: got to say it's a magnificent achievement to Dexter and
- 2:05Speaker 1: all his family. And it was Dexter's idea to a
- 2:09Speaker 1: unique idea on his own coming up this a twelve
- 2:13Speaker 1: year old. How good is that?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, that's you know, that's fantastic. He's lost his brother
- 2:17Speaker 2: and he wanted to do something. Yes.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Now, the other story about a child who raised money
- 2:22Speaker 1: by a bike ride and concerns Darcy Rowe, who was
- 2:25Speaker 1: a ten year old pupil from Cheriton Primary School in
- 2:28Speaker 1: Church Road and her mum, Adrianne, is a former guest
- 2:31Speaker 1: at the sports show when she came in and told
- 2:33Speaker 1: us about her under fourteen boys Optimist hockey team who
- 2:36Speaker 1: went on to win a national title. Now, back in August,
- 2:39Speaker 1: there was an arson attack in the school and the
- 2:42Speaker 1: forest style teaching area was destroyed. The forest school, as
- 2:47Speaker 1: they call it, consisted of outdoor wooden pagoda style hearts
- 2:50Speaker 1: and benches and they had like a little fireplace they
- 2:54Speaker 1: could use in the middle. They held it for classes
- 2:57Speaker 1: and meetings when the children escaped the confines of the
- 3:00Speaker 1: classroom and took lessons about wildlife, geography, animals and similar
- 3:04Speaker 1: sort of stuff. It was all burnt down in this
- 3:06Speaker 1: art and attack. A huge loss to the school and
- 3:09Speaker 1: to the pupils. Now Darcy felt that she needed to
- 3:12Speaker 1: do something to help, so she decided to do her
- 3:15Speaker 1: own twenty five k that's fifteen and a half mile
- 3:18Speaker 1: bike ride to raise some money to add to the
- 3:21Speaker 1: GoFundMe page, which was started by former pupil Tommy Waman,
- 3:25Speaker 1: which now stands. The last time I checked it was
- 3:27Speaker 1: around three thousand, five hundred pound of the ten thousand
- 3:30Speaker 1: pound target. Now Darcy completed her ride with her dad
- 3:33Speaker 1: Stephen and added a three hundred and sixty five pound
- 3:37Speaker 1: to the pot. So massive, Well done, said Darcy, and
- 3:40Speaker 1: a mum Adrianne, told me that they helped. They hoped
- 3:43Speaker 1: to start work on the forest school next Saturday. So
- 3:46Speaker 1: there you go, Adie. That's two examples of children. It's
- 3:49Speaker 1: not just adults you know that have seen something that's
- 3:52Speaker 1: really upset them and decided to do something on their own.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I mean, how good is that? What fine example? Do
- 4:00Speaker 1: sit to one?
- 4:01Speaker 2: I mean ten years of h I mean yeah, yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 2: that's no mean fate. But for a ten year old either, Yeah,
- 4:08Speaker 2: very fair play to both of them. Well done, yeah, and.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Good luck to you Adrian on your take it you're
- 4:13Speaker 1: playing today your first game of hockey back in the season.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So okay, Adrian
- 4:18Speaker 2: Okay I said earlier at the start of this
