- 2:22Knaw County comission Ben Selango is going to be stopping by with an update on
- 2:25several things, including the Capitol Sports Complex, also some renovations to the Canawa
- 2:30County Courthouse and the latest at Shawnee, some things going on out there.
- 2:34We'll talk to Commissioner Selango about state Democratic Party chair and deligate Mike Pushkin will
- 2:38be stopping by the show as well. But I want to bring in now
- 2:40Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau. Tim, good morning,
- 2:45Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave, Thanks for having me lt
- 2:47I appreciate you being here and I also appreciate you letting us postpone for just
- 2:53a couple of days. Originally I told the listeners I had your schedule on
- 2:55the show on Monday, but with the events that happened with the former president
- 3:00and the assassination attempt on Sunday Saturday rather in Butler, Pennsylvania, I got
- 3:05with you and said, yeah, maybe we ought to put that off a
- 3:07couple days. So I appreciate you being flexible with this man Absolutely, Manny,
- 3:10anytime I can, I can help it out. And I think you
- 3:13made you made the right call clearly. So yeah, so let's talk some
- 3:15numbers. Numbers, and I guess the press release probably went out last week
- 3:20or so. The numbers are in for the Pro Road Bike Championships in Charleston
- 3:23in May. And please listeners note that the numbers are going to be crunched
- 3:28even further over the next several months. But overall, Tim, give us
- 3:31the overall how are we looking? Well? I mean, it was a
- 3:35home run, Dave. It was. We calculated a four point six million
- 3:38dollar economic impact to our city during those six days of USA Cycling's Pro National
- 3:43Championship that included you know, twenty eight hundred overnight visitors. Specifically for the
- 3:50cycling event. We saw twenty plus percent increase in visitor spending while the event
- 3:53was going on in our city. You know, just all around, very
- 3:59solid, very you know, numbers that we're very enthusiastic about. We're bullish
- 4:03on year two because now we have proof of concept. We had a successful
- 4:08year one with great numbers, and I think that's only going to grow in
- 4:11year two. Is now people are more familiar with what the event is,
- 4:14and there's excitement for next year, which the dates have been set now and
- 4:18it will be May twentieth to the twenty fifth of twenty twenty five, that
- 4:23event returns to Charleston, West Virginia. And now, what exactly, and
- 4:27this is what you do for a living, among other things, what exactly
- 4:30goes into these numbers? When you hear I think you said the three point
- 4:33six million dollar economic impact than twenty eight hundred overnight overnight visitors unique visitors for
- 4:39this event? What goes into calculating those How do you get those numbers?
- 4:44Kind of break that down for the folks. Sure it was four point six
- 4:46million. You shorted me a million time. I'm sorry, I'm sorry,
- 4:48I'm so let that one fly this time. Yeah, So no, this
- 4:51calculates everything from you know, lodging expense, retail and restaurants, spending,
- 4:58the economic impact of having these events in the city, and the vendors that
- 5:01get paid off of these events. You know, one of the things that
- 5:03I'm you know, most proud of when we talked about this event last year
- 5:08is that in every instance possible, we used local vendors. Radio communications,
- 5:14used a local vendor for all of our auto needs, you know, local
- 5:18vendors, low enterprise mental cars, past org we use, we use local
- 5:25people. We use local people for ice, for beverage. So it's all
- 5:28of these local vendors and contractors that get paid off of the event. It's
- 5:31the increase in spending at say the hotel because of the influx of guests,
- 5:36so they're you know, paying more hours out when it comes to housekeeping services,
- 5:43linen services, things like that. So the economic impact number has you
- 5:46know, some multipliers in it that are based on national averages. You know,
- 5:49one overnight guests fits much spending, so it takes into account a lot
- 5:54of factors, and you know, we certainly do don't do that on our
- 5:57own. We use an Economic Impact Calculator is a module created by Destinations International,
- 6:01which is an internationally recognized tours and research company. And we get data
- 6:06from a company called Zarctico and they track third party anonymous cell phone and credit
- 6:11card data that gives us zip code information, so we can see how many
- 6:14people are in town for the event, but also where they come from.
- 6:17So there's a lot that goes into it. And that's why it doesn't happen
- 6:20overnight. These calculations and these reports. It takes some while. That takes
- 6:25a while rather to collect all of this data. So you know, we
- 6:30were very thorough. It's pretty scientific, and you know, we can confidently
- 6:32say that we generated nearly five million dollars in spending in the city of Charleston
- 6:38during those six days, which to me is just awesome. It is again
- 6:41we're talking to Tim Brady from the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and you
- 6:45know, there's always those and everybody's got opinions, and everybody's got their right
- 6:48to say, whether it's this, or whether it's Regatta or any of the
- 6:51activities that go on throughout the region, the state, the nation, whatever.
- 6:55They are always those that'll say, well, I mean, I think
- 6:58sometimes ten people get the focus wrong and they think about, well, there's
- 7:01not that many bike riders in Charleston. Okay, well, I mean there
- 7:05are that's mistake number one. But again you're talking about people that came in
- 7:11specifically for this event. And I was downtown on the Thursday night with our
- 7:16sister station in the Mountain. We did our live broadcast we do at Bar
- 7:19one on one and I saw for Steve Animal that night and the people that
- 7:24I saw not only in there, but also around the air because there was
- 7:28a beautiful evening. I was actually we were outside more than what we were
- 7:30inside. And the people that I saw that came in for this event,
- 7:35many of whom were just fans. I mean, we talked to some people
- 7:39from Virginia that came in just to watch this event. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 7:46Yeah. One of the things we learned early on is that the cycling
- 7:47community is very passionate, and we did see that. We saw a lot
- 7:50of people who weren't competitors, weren't family of competitors, just their cycling enthusiasts
- 7:56and they came to town specifically for the race and they traveled to where the
- 8:00race is each year. You know, we talked about nearly five hundred athletes
- 8:05competing, which is more than they had in Knoxville when the event was hosted
- 8:09there, so we increased our rider registration in Charleston, West Virginia. But
- 8:13you know it is it's the teams, it's the families, it's the friends,
- 8:18it's the cycling enthusiasts that are all coming to town. But it's more
- 8:20than that too, Dave, And I'll throw out another statistic to you.
- 8:24We saw visitors spending increase during the event, but the percentage of visitors in
- 8:30downtown Charleston was actually down compared to other time segments. And what that tells
- 8:35us is there were so many locals who came out and were engaged and also
- 8:39spending money. By the way, so many locals that were out and engaged
- 8:43that it took this influx of visitors and actually sort of watered it down because
- 8:48there were so many local people out cheering and ringing cow bells and out enthusiastically
- 8:54supporting the event. So from a community development standpoint, yeah, we brought
- 8:58in great numbers, greatomic impact. Also had significant community impact because people in
- 9:03Charleston just embraced this race and it was wonderful to see. And that's again
- 9:09part of why we're so enthusiastic about your two because now the locals are engaged
- 9:13and excited about it, and everybody wants to know when is it going to
- 9:16be next year, and we're able to now tell them. So it generated
- 9:20a lot of community impact as well. And oh, by the way,
- 9:22we raised some money for the Mountaineer Food Banks to help fight hunger in our
- 9:26community. We partnered with the Stern Wheel Regatta to give away two hundred bikes
- 9:30to children from families that need that kind of assistance from low income family So
- 9:37we gave away a bunch of boy we got kids on bikes. We helped
- 9:41raise money for our statewide food pantry, and we had a great successful event.
- 9:46I mean top to bottom, soup to nuts. This was just an
- 9:48outstanding week for the city of Charleston. Dave Allen showing five Any Live brought

- 10:43it's you're right, it's been a great summer. It's going to continue.
- 10:46We've got we bought you failed to mention, and we can talk about this
- 10:48at a later day. Yeah. The Harley Ownership Group Eastern Rally is coming
- 10:52to Charleston in August. In October, we'll welcome USA Karate with a national
- 10:58juniors tournament where we anticipate in the neighborhood of a thousand competitors coming into our
- 11:03city. So summer continues strong, and that's going to roll right into a
- 11:07really great Paul in the city of Charleston. And then you get into October
- 11:11with all of the great October events in our city. So you know,
- 11:13we're rolling, Dave, and it's fun and it's exciting, and I couldn't
- 11:18be more bullish about where we are as a city and where we're headed.
- 11:20Good to leave you with this, text says, Okay, Dave, I'm

- 17:10Start your journey towards better health Today. Commissioner Selango is here. Hey man,
- 17:15I'm here having a good summer so far. Yeah, actually getting a
- 17:18little family time in. I'm family time and mostly indoors. It's one hundred
- 17:23degrees. Well it's looking. I mean if you step outside this morning,
- 17:26we had a little fog and little little human this morning. Bit it's going
- 17:29to be the next couple of days are going to be good. My yard
- 17:30needed it. Yeah yeah, really yeah really. So let's get to the
- 17:34Capital Sports Complex no pool now. Yeah, So basically what we did,
- 17:40we had a lot of difficulty, that's to put it mildly, acquiring the
- 17:45parking garages we tried actually offered him more than they got at the auction.
- 17:49Tried very hard to get the parking garage as they simply would not would not
- 17:59come to our terms. So you know, you've got to move on.
- 18:02And we also who who is the bondholders? The bondholders would not come to
- 18:07the term. Yeah, they simply valued it way too high. They thought
- 18:10that they had us in a in a predicament where we would come in and
- 18:14just throw money and you know, like it didn't matter, and it does
- 18:18matter, and you in addition to the property acquisition, there's there's tremendous repair
- 18:25issues. Yea, So it was gonna it was going to cost. Now
- 18:29when when you look at the the potential economic impact of it, then certainly
- 18:33it would make sense. But they we just could not reach an agreement.
- 18:37I tried. I mean year and a half we tried. So you just
- 18:40got to move on. They can buy them at auction and do whatever they
- 18:42need to with them. But so what we did was we also had a
- 18:48study commission and they looked at the whether or not it was economically viable.
- 18:52Uh, there was going to be a lot of money in the in the
- 18:56swimming pool, a substantial amount of money. And and as I've said several
- 18:59times construction as our way up. They're kind they're coming down now, but
- 19:03uh, they're about thirty percent higher than they were just a couple of years
- 19:07ago, So you've got to take that into account as well. So it
- 19:10was going to be tremendously expensive. We didn't think we would get the return,
- 19:14the economic return on that part of it. So what we've done is
- 19:18we're it's not over. I'm not saying we're foreclosing the idea of the pool,
- 19:22but we're going to move forward with the part that we know that we
- 19:26can do, which is the Macy's building. We were able to acquire,
- 19:27we didn't have any issues where it's almost completely torn down, and then we
- 19:32should be able to start construction on the Capital Sports Complex, which we'll have
- 19:36to rebrand by the way, I've been calling the Capital Sports Complex. We
- 19:37can talk about that too. I heard talking about that earlier that you can't
- 19:42call it the Capitol Sports Company. Well, we could. The question is
- 19:45would it be as effective, and we want something that is. There are
- 19:52several other complex is already called Capitals Sports Compacts there are, and so that
- 19:56that messes up your you know, for the for the tech people out there,
- 20:00not one of them, but for you know, it messes up your
- 20:02Google SEO results and so search engine. You know. Yeah, so you've
- 20:04got somebody in Indianapolis going to Google Capital Sports Complex. They're gonna get three
- 20:10of them, right, So we've got to make sure that we are unique.
- 20:12And that's you know, that's the key to marketing, the key to
- 20:15branding. It needs to be unique. And so we're gonna we're gonna work
- 20:19on that Solango land. No, it will not have my name anywhere near
- 20:23it, I promise you. So we've got to we got to come up
- 20:26with a very unique name so that it stands out. Uh. But you
- 20:30know the part that we're going to be able to do now, which I
- 20:33call Phase A. Uh, hopefully there will be a Phase B with what
- 20:37it, which would include the aquatic center. Only time will tell. Phase
- 20:41A is going to be the basketball, pickleball, volleyball, the gym,
- 20:45the rooms with the climbing walls so people can come and rent and you know,
- 20:49have their birthday parties and whatnot there that that's going to be a significant
- 20:53economic driver. And when you combine that with what the city already has,
- 20:57which the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. We can have just major, major
- 21:03tournaments. You know, people were right right before Vergatta started. You know,
- 21:07we finished up the largest soccer tournament in the East Coast down at Shawnee
- 21:14and we had to in fact, it's so big, we have to also
- 21:15use Barbersville. You know. It's just a massive tournament. We had like
- 21:19twelve to fifteen thousand people in town. It's you know, millions and millions
- 21:23of dollars coming in. So that's what you're going to be able to see
- 21:26with basketball and volleyball and some of those sports that we'll be able to come
- 21:30in. We'll be able to use the Sports Complex and also the Charleston Coliseum
- 21:33of Conventions. But the commistry, I mean, it's got to be a
- 21:37little bit of a gut punch though, because from day one this thing,
- 21:40and you were on this show two or three years ago, whenever this idea
- 21:41came out talking about this aquatic center, I was disappointed, to be honest,
- 21:47And all I can tell you is that the Mayor and I made tremendous
- 21:49efforts to make it happen, and I'm not giving up, you know,
- 21:53just because you fail the first time doesn't mean it's over. It just means
- 21:56you succeed next time. So what, I'll just keep working on. So
- 21:59what of the next steps now, I mean as far as I mean,
- 22:03obviously there's a lot of a lot of demolition going on. There has been
- 22:06for some time. So what it's almost finished. They're actually working on a
- 22:10wall, so we can finish the demolition at the Macy's building, and then
- 22:12the architects are hard at work with the design. We'll be able to unveil
- 22:17that I believe in around August, maybe August twentieth. I may have that
- 22:21date wrong, it's just off my memory, okay, And then we will
- 22:25as soon as the architects are finish, we're gonna start construction. So the
- 22:26goal is to have have it opened by the end of twenty twenty six.
- 22:30That's the goal. So that's you know, it's a major project, but
- 22:34I think it's going to have a tremendous effect, not just on Charleston,
- 22:37but also Kenwall County in the state. We're gonna have people coming in all
- 22:40the time for that. And how many when you say you get the rock
- 22:44climbing wall, and you've got the basketball courts and the pickle court. I
- 22:45mean, are there are those things in other areas? I mean, how
- 22:49big is this thing going to be? That's going to have people that want
- 22:52to come in from out of town. What they don't have in other areas
- 22:56is the volume that we will have. So we will have you know,
- 23:00numerous courts at the facility, but also across the street at the convention center,
- 23:04so we'll be able to combine them both so when people come in,
- 23:08they won't have to leave, you know, in other areas. And you
- 23:11know, Akron has I think one of the biggest basketball travel basketball tournaments in
- 23:15the country every year, but they can't have it at one facility. It's
- 23:18kind of spread out all over, similar to what we're doing a Shawnee with
- 23:22the with the regional tournament every USU soccer. We have to spread it out
- 23:27so people, you know, one game they may be at Shawnee. The
- 23:30next game they have to drive to Barbersville. We don't want that to happen.
- 23:33So what we're going to do. The reason why this is going to
- 23:34be quite frankly better than other regions is because we're going to have it all
- 23:41under one essentially one roof. You just got to cross the street, you
- 23:44know, to play, and people can stay here, you know, they
- 23:47can stay at the hotels downtown. Hopefully there will be more hotels. I
- 23:49know there's at least one more coming, hopefully two more, and we'll be
- 23:52able to generate significant money for our local businesses. Well and for those people
- 23:56that say, you know, as I deligate. Kaye Young told me one
- 24:00time. She told me this, she said, and I believe it or
- 24:03not, I learned something from Kaylee Young. She said, don't read the
- 24:07comments on news stories, and there were those about this, Well, Charleston's
- 24:12a ghost town anyway. Yeah, I disagree with that. I think Charleston
- 24:17the entire Kenaal Valley for that matter. Yeah, no, I disagree,
- 24:22And I see those comments, and I quite frankly, sometimes I do read
- 24:23the comments, and sometimes I learned from the comments, sure, you know,
- 24:26and I truthfully, some of the best ideas that we will get will
- 24:33start from someone who calls in with a negative comment. We've made tremendous upgrades
- 24:38with Shawnee based upon several comments that people made, and they would call me
- 24:41directly. And I said this back when we built Shawnee in seventeen and eighteen.
- 24:47I read the comments particularly back then, you know, and we made
- 24:51significant changes and it was all for the better. So yeah, don't be
- 24:53shy about the comments. You want to make them, make them. But
- 24:56ave Allen Show and five any Lie Bright to you. Part by Bridge Valley.

- 25:12a Bridge Valley dot edu slash apprenticeships today. Speaking of Shannee, what's going
- 25:18on out there? We have a major, well two things going on.
- 25:21Number one, you know, we are still working on the security upgrades.
- 25:25McNeil fence has apparently they've get all the new gates in that is going to
- 25:30start on Monday. They promised me that it will be finished by the end
- 25:33of the week, you know, making sure that we have those emergency exit
- 25:37bars. That issue is still on the forefront, which was somewhat called into
- 25:41question. What was it a month or so ago the shooting. It was
- 25:45not there but away from there. Yeah, it was two blocks away,
- 25:48but people thought it was there. You know, it sounded like it was
- 25:49there because it was a high caliber weapons that were used nearby, and you
- 25:53get that echo. You don't know where in the world people are shooting from.
- 25:56Honestly, the first call that I got they said that the shooting was
- 26:00at the facility, so I thought it was there as well. So anyway,
- 26:03those emergency bars, those new gates are coming in. They're supposed to
- 26:07be here Monday. They're going to be installed by the end of next week.
- 26:10So that'll be a tremendous upgrade at the complex. Then we have the
- 26:15new entrance building. You know, thankfully Governor Justice and Senator Joe Manson gave
- 26:22us grants to build a new building. We did not have the restroom capacity
- 26:27at Shawnee quite frankly that you know, people were standing in line for restrooms,
- 26:30they were standing in line for concessions, and so we are essentially tripling
- 26:36or quadrupling the size of that building so we'll be able to host more people
- 26:40will have it. It'll change the way that you come into the park,
- 26:42which will be for the better. So we're excited about that. That should
- 26:45be fin It's going to take about twelve months. We think I'm hoping to
- 26:48get it done in nine, but we'll see. So what's going on at
- 26:52the courthouse. I mean, you've been some renovations going on there and then
- 26:56speaking of comments, so at least text we got some text feed a reak
- 26:57go ahead. That's fine. The the courthouse, you know, we've got
- 27:00a it's going to be about a ten million dollar upgrade. So the legislature
- 27:04increased the number of circuit judges. We got an additional circuit judge, rich
- 27:08Lindsay won that race, and then we've got three additional mattates. So we
- 27:12had to upgrade the facility. We had to expand there were some other things
- 27:15we need to do. Anyway, the courthouse is a bit dated. I
- 27:18think it's about forty years old. I may be wrong on that, but
- 27:22it's about forty years old. And we've already made some upgrades with the HVAC
- 27:26and right after COVID we're able to do that, but we have to expand.
- 27:30That is a major project. So we've got three or four major projects
- 27:33going on in Kanwak County that's going to start very soon. We're going out
- 27:36to bid in August on that project, and we hope to have a construction
- 27:41start in October. Obviously, we've got the new judges, a new magra
- 27:45starting in January. So the goal is to have one new circuit judge chamber
- 27:48finished in January twenty twenty five when the new judge comes in, and then
- 27:52we've got hopefully the magistrate area will be finished in March of twenty five.
- 27:56Now that's ambitious. And I'm sitting here, you know, I look at
- 28:00these dates and I'm thinking, how in the world are they going to be
- 28:02able to do that in just a couple of months. We'll see. They
- 28:04told me they will, So I'll be over there, you know, monitoring
- 28:07the tap of the foot. Gone, let's all right, Texas. Dave
- 28:11asked the commissioner. Why why most counties have courthouse records online but not can
- 28:17off. That's a good question. I think the uh, you know some
- 28:21and there are two different types of court outdrugs. You got the litigation,
- 28:23you know, the circuit clerk's office with the litigation. Some of that is
- 28:29online, not all of it. Some of the information contains sensitive information.
- 28:33For instance, when there's a deck collection. It'll include data birth and social
- 28:37security. So you can't automatically upload that because it could be don't know.
- 28:41Other counties do that. Sometimes they do as long as they redact the information.
- 28:45So I'm in favor of having all that information online. The other part
- 28:49of it are the county records, so you know, it's you can get
- 28:53now all the tax informations online. You can get on there and see what
- 28:56the taxes are, and you know, the personal and real property, but
- 29:00the deeds aren't online. And honestly, I think that should that should happen,
- 29:03and so I've commented for a couple of years now that we need to
- 29:07make sure that that's available for search online. That's something that you plan on
- 29:11working on, you and the other commission. There's something I'm in favor of
- 29:14now. What that entails to go back and get one hundred plus years of
- 29:18records and scan them in and upload and make it searchable. That's a big
- 29:23project. So but it's it's got to happen. I mean, we can't
- 29:27just you know, pretend like it's you know, nineteen sixty. We got
- 29:30to actually upgrade Tex says going back to the sports complex. But we don't
- 29:36have a pool now, the wise pool is constantly down. Why not pool?
- 29:40First, we have soccer courts, we have pickle ball courts, we
- 29:41have basketball courts. Where are the pools in the winter? Yeah? No,
- 29:45I agree, I agree. We and you know, the county spent
- 29:48a tremendous amount of money trying to keep the uc pool going. You know
- 29:52that was there were construction issues, that were maintenance issues, There were tons
- 29:56of problems. We spent hundreds of thousands in UH so that people would be
- 30:00able to go and use that pool. So I agree that a pool was
- 30:06needed. That the problem is the pool is not going to generate and we've
- 30:08got study after study to show this. The pool will not generate the economic
- 30:11impact that the other part will. Really I thought it would. It will
- 30:15not because when you when you're talking about bringing in a girls volleyball team,
- 30:19for instance, they're traveling with tons of people. You look at you know,
- 30:25look at the soccer match. We had one tournament that lasted five days.
- 30:27It brought in twenty four million dollars. Two weeks before that, we
- 30:32had the Regional President's Cup that brought in eight million dollars. Because they're coming
- 30:37in there and they're they're they're staying here for five or six days, and
- 30:41they're bringing family members. So you're booking hotels, you're eating at restaurants,
- 30:45you're shopping, you're getting gas, you're doing all the things. Swimming is
- 30:49a big sport, but it doesn't travel like those sports do. That makes
- 30:55sense, And that's just the that's just the economic reality of it. There.
- 30:57You know, you can google and and see all that information, but
- 31:00you know, we've studied it. We've studied it several times, and the
- 31:06the truth is the other side, which I call the money making side.
- 31:10It is cheaper to build, it is cheaper to maintain, and it has
- 31:12the biggest bang for its buck. And as a texture followed up to what
- 31:17I said earlier, Ben and wasn't the swimming pool the big selling point to
- 31:19the public. It was one of the selling points. The idea was that
- 31:23we were going to take a space that was dead and we're going to try
- 31:26to put people in it. We're going to try to generate revenue off of
- 31:30a place that quite frankly, was just growing weeds and crumbling. That was
- 31:33the selling point from my perspective. But yes, I wanted to pull I
- 31:38definitely wanted to pull and unfortunately it's not going to happen, at least immediately.
- 31:42But you're not giving up hope. As you said the beginning of the
- 31:45interview been, You're not You're not giving up hope. I don't. And
- 31:47it doesn't even have to be in that location. We can have it in
- 31:48a different location. I'd prefer it to be there, sure, but look,
- 31:52you can't make somebody do what they don't want to do. And they
- 31:55thought that they were holding, you know, all the cards, and quite
- 31:57frankly, they don't. Shouldn't says the Texas should in the pool revenue had
- 32:00been considered before it was promised. No, it was, it was considered.
- 32:06It definitely was considered, and at that time and whenever it was we
- 32:08announced it, we were looking at about an eighty million dollar project. Now
- 32:12if we included the pool, it'd probably be one hundred and twenty million dollar
- 32:15project because the prices have gone up or the construction has gone up. But
- 32:19no, I studied pools. I even was looking at the cost of pools,
- 32:23not just for not just for construction, but also for maintenance and operation,
- 32:29the operational side of it. I was looking to studying them all over
- 32:31the country. In fact, I looked too that were in Canada. Anything
- 32:35that I could get public information on the operational cost of a swimming pool,
- 32:37I studied it. So we did look at that, and at that time
- 32:42I thought it was much more feasible. Of course, we did have a
- 32:45feasibility study that said it's not feasible. That certainly would weigh against it.
- 32:52And I can imagine what would happen if we built the swimming pool and it
- 32:54wasn't feasible, and then somebody comes and calls on this show or text says
- 33:00says, by the way, you more on. You had a study that
- 33:01said it wasn't feasible, and yet you did it anyway. And that came
- 33:04from Mississilango. Thanks honey, so that you know that happens. But we've
- 33:09got a My goal is to keep looking at that because that's I think that
- 33:14would definitely improve even if the even if that's not as economically feasible as what
- 33:20we had hoped, I still think it's good for the residents. I mean,
- 33:22any any park is not economically feasible. I promise you this, every
- 33:27single park that you have, And I don't care whether state owned, federal
- 33:30owned, or county owned. It loses money. Parks lose money. You
- 33:34do not develop parks because you're trying to even break break even or make money.
- 33:38You do that for quality of life. And so I get that part
- 33:42of it too. So the people that are that are messaging me, and
- 33:45there have been a number of them, they understand that too, that this
- 33:51is a quality of life an issue, not an not an economic issue.
- 33:53But the problem is when we're already doing several incredibly large projects Courthouse Shawnee,
- 34:01you know, the one side of the Phase A of Capital Sports Center,
- 34:05it's it can be a challenge to take on more and quite frankly, I
- 34:08don't like debt. I'm not. The county has zero dollars in debt right
- 34:12now, zero and we worked hard to get it that way. Uh So,
- 34:16you know, I think I speak for all the commissioners, commission President
- 34:20Wheeler and Commissioner slot Nick. We don't want to take on more death than
- 34:22we can handle. Sounds good. Gotta leave it, Dereck, Commissioner Slango,
- 34:27appreciate you being here. Man, Hey, thanks for mam. Don't
- 34:29totally discount, don't just totally dismiss the Selango Land. No, I've dismissed
- 34:35that. That's all right, but Dave Island Chilling five a live is brought

- 39:10are you doing? I'm doing fine. I know the State Democratic Party of
- 39:15which you are the head of also Delegate might Pushkin for those who don't know,
- 39:19wouldn't be anybody you release a statement condemning the assassination attempts on Donald Trump's
- 39:24obviously you and other entities that your thoughts then on Saturday and your thoughts now,
- 39:30well, my thoughts have not changed one bit. I mean are you
- 39:34know, thoughts and prayers with the former president and his family, especially the
- 39:39victims, and this horrible, horrible event, this Pennsylvania former fire chief that
- 39:47died, from what I understand, protecting his family, trying to shield his
- 39:52family from gunfire from an AR fifteen. You know, all he was doing
- 39:58that day was trying to express his you know, his preference, political preferences,
- 40:05going to a political rally, something that's very American, go to a
- 40:07political rally. And that's all he was doing. And uh and and wound
- 40:13up being killed. And of course the other two victims, who I've heard
- 40:15are now in more stable condition, and that's that's great. But yeah,
- 40:20we expressed condemned the violence, just like every uh, every good American should.
- 40:25And again we don't know what the motives were. You know, was
- 40:28this guy a Trump hater although he was a registered Republican or was he somebody
- 40:32And I kind of harkened back, and you and I are the same age
- 40:35to Hinckley that tried to kill Reagan just to impress Jodie Foster. I mean,
- 40:39and there are now there is intel coming out that said he had also
- 40:43on his phone googled things about President Biden, yet he was looking up to
- 40:47both both candidates schedules. Yeah, soar And that's only just what I've speculated,
- 40:53speculation. We don't know, nobody knows what the motive could have possibly
- 40:58been, but we do know that uh uh, somebody with some extreme mental
- 41:01illness got a hold of a high powered rifle and did some real harm,
- 41:06been a lot of harm to our country. Been watching much of the r
- 41:09n C, the Republican National Convention, bits and pieces about as much as
- 41:13I can stomach. Well that's an honest answer. But you think of the
- 41:16governor's speech Tuesday night. You know, I was troubled by the last part
- 41:22of it, and I think a lot of people were, especially when there's
- 41:24been all this talk of dialing down the rhetoric and then the governor has this
- 41:30line about you know, we're going to go on. I can't remember exactly
- 41:32what he said. I don't know if he could repeat it either, but
- 41:36about we're going to you know, become unhinged. I if our guy doesn't
- 41:40win, What is that supposed to mean? I already do that. In
- 41:45January I had an issue with that too, and delicate Kaylee Young and I
- 41:49talked about that yesterday on the show. I just I thought, again,
- 41:52I'm a free speech guy, but I think I don't think that that was
- 41:57something that probably should have been said in that setup in my opinion. But
- 42:00the governor is not one to follow a script or he kind of goes off
- 42:04of what he says, and to say the country is going to become I
- 42:07mean, there are just as many people that would say that if that,
- 42:09if Trump wins, the country's going to come, He's going to become unhinged.
- 42:14We don't need that kind of rhetoric. In my opinion. I'm not
- 42:16sure what the point of it was or what he really had to gain by
- 42:20saying something like, you know, get up there and state your case,
- 42:22you know, but you don't have to uh. To me, it almost
- 42:25sounded like a threat. I'm not sure if that's how he meant it or
- 42:28not. I don't I knows what he said, and it did not come
- 42:31off well. You planning on watching tonight when the president make He's been there
- 42:35every night, but he actually speaks tonight and officially accepts the nomination, I
- 42:38guess, or are you planning on being there now I'm watching it? You
- 42:40simply will not be there, but watching it, I'm going to tune inn
- 42:44if I can stay up that late. It comes on pretty late for all
- 42:46guys like I get up there. I try to get up early. I
- 42:50couldn't make I tried to listen to his pick for vice president, J.
- 42:54D Vance, Senator Vance, but he got kind of late. I couldn't.
- 42:59I couldn't stay awake through his speech. It was. It wasn't the
- 43:00most exciting speech. If you want my what do you think? I couldn't
- 43:04keep me awake? But I can tell you I don't. I'm very disappointed
- 43:07in that selection. To me, it's doubling down on a very far right,
- 43:13extreme philosophy. I don't think that's reaching to the middle. I don't
- 43:16think that's trying to bring more people into the fold by picking somebody like JD.
- 43:21Vance, first of all, as being a lifelong West Virginian Appalachian,
- 43:27not an Appalachian like JD Vance claims to be an Appalachian. I find a
- 43:31lot of his writings to be very offensive and degrading towards people who live in
- 43:36this area. He all, if you're a study of if you're a student
- 43:40of West Virginia history, you know we've been often treated really like like a
- 43:45like a third world nation. You know, our resources have been stripped away,
- 43:49We're left with very little, little to nothing in return. People outside
- 43:52of the state have gotten very rich off of our resources, in our in
- 43:58our cheap labor here historically, and that has led to some long term problems
- 44:04for this state, whether it's poor public health outcomes, the addiction crisis,
- 44:08is abject poverty, and it's just a historical fact that the way that this
- 44:14state has been treated has led to some really poor outcomes. And if you
- 44:17read his book, he likes to blame it squarely on the people here.
- 44:22Well, and I believe in personal responsibility too, but you gotta factor in
- 44:29these other elements with the complete exploitation of this part of the country to make
- 44:35other people rich. And then he gets up there and he delivers this populist
- 44:38type speech. Meanwhile, he is backed by hedge fund managers, He is
- 44:43backed by people in the tech industry who pump millions and millions of dollars into
- 44:46his campaign in twenty two when he first ran for Senate, every politician yeah,
- 44:54but the people who back him, like namely has got Peter Tiele.
- 45:00That's a very interesting view. I did read some he he doesn't believe women
- 45:02should be able to vote, doesn't believe women. I didn't read that bark.
- 45:07He has a quote saying that he doesn't believe freedom and democracy can coexist.
- 45:12That's that's dangerous to have somebody like that backing you. And of course
- 45:15you know Senator Vance has some pretty extreme views himself. He doesn't he's for
- 45:20and he has said he is for a nationwide ban on abortion. He and
- 45:23Trump differ on that. And now I'm not saying one won't come around to
- 45:27the other. Well, try and say all he won, but all he
- 45:29wants. But he is the one who appointed these three justices that resulted in
- 45:34Roby. There are people I don't know whether you've heard this, Mike,
- 45:36and we've got to go to break. I don't know whether you've heard this
- 45:37now. There are people within the Republican Party right now, and I have
- 45:40one that regularly texts this show, but it's not particularly enamored with Trump right
- 45:45now, because he thinks this person he or she that texts the show thinks
- 45:50that that Trump has started as some of his ideas have weakened the Republican Party
- 45:54platform because he's taken in the text said he thinks Trump's taking it too liberal.
- 46:00Wow, Okay, was he publicly saying this? I hold he was
- 46:02a text to the show. I don't know, Probably not. I don't
- 46:05know. Nobody's publicly nobody Unlike our party, they're not allowed to publicly criticize
- 46:08their leader. But hey, that's a problem. That's not Democrat. Hold

- 48:25dot Com. TEXTA says, ask mister Pushkin who he thinks the Democrat nominee
- 48:30for president will be when Biden drops out. I'm not going to answer a
- 48:34hypothetical. President Biden won every primary and he has more than ninety percent of
- 48:39the of the pledged delegates. I do believe that you know President Biden is
- 48:45going to do what he feels is in the best interest of the country.
- 48:49And I am not privy to the same kind of data that the President and
- 48:53his folks have in regards to polling, So it is definitely not my call.
- 48:58But I'm not going to here and answer hypotheticals. There's one person that
- 49:04can answer the question over whether or not President Biden is going to stay in
- 49:08the race. Hey, President Biden. A pe Pole came out yesterday's said
- 49:12three fourths of Democrats think you should step aside. Yep, I saw that.
- 49:15So, I mean, I'm seeing the same stories you are about Majority
- 49:22Leader Schumer and Minority Leader Jeffries Patam Schiff, Yeah, former Speaker Pelosi having
- 49:30these discussions, and I'll tell you right now, great, So I am
- 49:34not part of those discussions. I didn't ask you. My job is to
- 49:37help elect Democrats here in West Virginia and that's what that's what we plan to
- 49:40do. Tex says a Hoppy addressed this yesterday, and I agree with him
- 49:44with the tone of justice used when he said we've become unhinged. I took
- 49:47him to mean with everything our country has gone through the past four years under
- 49:51this administration, with record inflation, gas prices and groceries, the invasion of
- 49:54ten million illlegals at the southern border, et cetera. We have truly lost
- 49:58our minds if we don't put Trump back in the all the things we've gone
- 50:01through, like passing the Infrastructure Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, or the American Rescue Plan
- 50:07that has sent a historic amount of moneys down to cities and counties throughout West
- 50:12Virginia. UH the Inflation Reduction Act that led to such an announcements like new
- 50:16Corps and form Energy Green motors here in Kanac County. All of the stuff
- 50:22that we've gone through during the Biden administration that we should be thankful for.
- 50:24I know Governor Justice is thankful for He shows up at every photo op and
- 50:29ribbon cutting and with the golden shovel and some big scissors to cut ribbons.
- 50:32But he never ever expresses that gratitude to President Biden, who actually got the
- 50:38legislation pass. It is he has disproportionately helped us here in West Virginia.
- 50:45I want I want to I want to talk about the governor as now you
- 50:49firmly believed, talk about them, you firmly believe of sor I'm sure that
- 50:53that you're behind Glenn elliott A. You know, for one hundred percent,
- 50:57I would, and I would I would expect that if Justus win's this race,
- 51:00are you are you concerned about his ability to serve? Very I think
- 51:05everybody should. You know, there's been a lot of talk about the the
- 51:07you know, the fitness of President Biden, about his is he going to
- 51:10be able to serve the next four year term? Well, you know,
- 51:15Jim Justice is running for a six year term and not had any real serious
- 51:19discussion about that. In fact, I tell you what, if if there
- 51:22was a foot race between President Biden and Jim Justice, I know who I
- 51:24would bet on. I'd been on the president to be distrategy. But does
- 51:30anybody really expect Jim Justice, who has been a no show governor for eight
- 51:36years? Does anybody really expect him to show up and do the job for
- 51:39six years in Washington, d C. Because you can't vote from the Greenbrier.
- 51:44You have to actually be there in your seat to vote. In order
- 51:49to have West Virginia represented by not one, but two senators, He's going
- 51:52to have to show up. And does anybody really expect him to do the
- 51:55job because he hasn't done it here in Charleston. A final text. Oh
- 52:00yes, a Christian who is married to a Hindu from India, raised by

- 52:08You're desperately grasping at straws. Are you talking about Vance? Yeah?
- 52:13He is a threat. In fact, just today the Foreign Minister of Russia
- 52:17is out singing his praises. Why because he wants to completely cut off funding
- 52:22for Ukraine. He wants to hand Ukraine over to Russia. I don't even
- 52:27recognize today's gov today's Republican party. It's not the Party of Reagan. We
- 52:31gotta leave it there, Mike. I appreciate you being here to Dave Allan
