- 0:04Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:08Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bar Blazarre and Lazarre.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it?
- 0:13Speaker 1: Joined us Always buy an our Bara. Here is Evan
- 0:19Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bars. Joey Size jacked by the way,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Joey Size. So we talked to Joey Slid the other day.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Super nice guy. We spent a lot of time talking
- 0:28Speaker 1: about golf, some of it how it relates to kicking,
- 0:31Speaker 1: but just also kind of golf.
- 0:32Speaker 2: O't too long on this, you talked out, but fourteen minutes.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It was absurd.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It's great. We had great, great, We had a great copy.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We looked over three times and Joey Slide was still
- 0:41Speaker 2: talking twenty.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Twenty when he was enjoying himself a good conversation.
- 0:46Speaker 2: It was a long time for Joey Slide. You guys.
- 0:48Speaker 2: You guys were talking to Joey Slide for that might
- 0:50Speaker 2: have been one of the longest press conferences at the summer.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I think Rees said it was his longest, like scrum ever.
- 0:56Speaker 1: But I will say this, we kind of so we
- 0:58Speaker 1: talked about golf, talked about the the competition, we talked
- 1:01Speaker 1: about kickoffs and We're all kind of standing. There goes
- 1:03Speaker 1: you guys, got anything else? Like he was ready for
- 1:05Speaker 1: more questions. We were like, no, we'll let you go.
- 1:07Speaker 3: He was.
- 1:07Speaker 1: He was ready to keep talking.
- 1:09Speaker 2: We'll see you. You were ready to declare the kicker
- 1:12Speaker 2: competition over last week when I after the game on
- 1:15Speaker 2: Thursday night. Yeah, so we're we're getting there. We're we're
- 1:19Speaker 2: getting to that point. But it's Evanzar Alex Bars Patriots
- 1:22Speaker 2: catch twenty two. I wait you for the next couple
- 1:24Speaker 2: of hours. The Patriots will practice this afternoon, So of
- 1:28Speaker 2: course everything that we're about to say and is going
- 1:31Speaker 2: to go out of the door when Drake May throws
- 1:33Speaker 2: three picks in practice later today. No, I'm just kidding, but.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I I everybody you hear that Evan says Drake May
- 1:39Speaker 1: is gonna melt down at practice. That's Drake May's biggest
- 1:42Speaker 1: defender saying he's about to melt down.
- 1:44Speaker 2: We'll get trust me, we'll get to it.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Mark the Dayton time.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing though, that that this is
- 1:50Speaker 2: not where I was going to start. But I'll just
- 1:51Speaker 2: say this really quickly. Off the top training camp and
- 1:54Speaker 2: I was just talking to Paul about this training camp
- 1:57Speaker 2: is so such a day to day grind. Yeah, that
- 2:01Speaker 2: the show that we did last week is so irrelevant
- 2:06Speaker 2: at this point coming off that joint practice almost like
- 2:09Speaker 2: it changes so quickly this time of year because you're
- 2:12Speaker 2: watching practice every single day. There's a lot of just
- 2:17Speaker 2: data that comes from that that it's different than the
- 2:20Speaker 2: regular season. The regular season, you have the same take
- 2:23Speaker 2: for a week, right because you don't see them again
- 2:25Speaker 2: until the next the following game day, so you have
- 2:28Speaker 2: the same take for a week, whereas in training camp
- 2:31Speaker 2: you can have a bad practice one day and you
- 2:32Speaker 2: follow that up with a good practice, then all of
- 2:34Speaker 2: a sudden, your mood changes. Everything kind of changes. We'll
- 2:38Speaker 2: get into more Drake May though, I want to talk
- 2:40Speaker 2: about that off the top of the show. But first,
- 2:42Speaker 2: hey Patriots fans, if you want to see Toyota's best offers,
- 2:45Speaker 2: including those not seen on TV, go to buy at
- 2:47Speaker 2: toyota dot Com is Toyota's official website for deals from
- 2:51Speaker 2: the official vehicle of the New England Patriots, Toyota, Let's
- 2:54Speaker 2: Go places and easy to Drink It, Easy to Enjoy.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Bud Light, the official beer sponsor of the New England page.
- 3:00Speaker 2: It's Okay, here's really where I wanted to start today.
- 3:03Speaker 2: So I've done a lot of thinking about last week's
- 3:08Speaker 2: show and about all the what do you want to
- 3:12Speaker 2: call it panic about that joint practice last week against
- 3:17Speaker 2: the Eagles, and I stand by everything that I said.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It was offensively one of the worst joint practices I've
- 3:25Speaker 2: ever seen for the Patriots. It was that bad. It
- 3:30Speaker 2: was the panic was warranted. With that being said, the
- 3:35Speaker 2: big thing that I, I guess am getting at. You
- 3:39Speaker 2: mentioned to me early on in the show, and I
- 3:42Speaker 2: brushed you off because I didn't A didn't want admit
- 3:45Speaker 2: I was wrong, and B I didn't want to get
- 3:47Speaker 2: bogged down by an old argument that we've had a
- 3:49Speaker 2: million times.
- 3:50Speaker 1: It was really A, you didn't want to admit you
- 3:51Speaker 1: were wrong. B you didn't want to admit I was right.
- 3:54Speaker 2: No, I had nothing to do with that. Now, I
- 3:56Speaker 2: admit when you're right, when you're right, But I didn't
- 3:58Speaker 2: want to get bogged down in an argument that we
- 4:01Speaker 2: always get bogged down. So I just was trying to
- 4:03Speaker 2: move us along as well. But with that being said,
- 4:07Speaker 2: you know I'm a big Rocky fan, So just okay,
- 4:12Speaker 2: wait with the analogy here for a second. That was
- 4:15Speaker 2: the first time that I was afraid. First time I
- 4:18Speaker 2: was afraid watching that offensive line against Jordan Davis and
- 4:23Speaker 2: Jalen Carter and all those the freaking monsters that the
- 4:26Speaker 2: Eagles have on the defense of the line. That was
- 4:29Speaker 2: the first time. If you want to really break me down,
- 4:32Speaker 2: if you want to get to the core of the issue,
- 4:35Speaker 2: I was afraid, Adrian. I was afraid, all right. And
- 4:38Speaker 2: I watched this happen and I was shell shocked from it.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I was like, oh no, this is worse than I thought, Like,
- 4:46Speaker 2: they can't put him behind this line the way that
- 4:49Speaker 2: it is right now. And then the game happened on
- 4:54Speaker 2: Thursday night, and all of my priors about Drake May
- 4:59Speaker 2: and how I felt his physical talent would just kind
- 5:03Speaker 2: of win out in the end with his development all
- 5:09Speaker 2: came to fruition in a lot of ways. And I
- 5:12Speaker 2: get it. It wasn't perfect, and we're making a lot
- 5:15Speaker 2: out of a six four eleven for forty four yard performance,
- 5:18Speaker 2: but you saw all the flashes of what I have
- 5:22Speaker 2: been saying about him for months, which is that if
- 5:25Speaker 2: I was an offensive coordinator, if I was Alex van Pelt,
- 5:29Speaker 2: Drake May is the quarterback I would want to draft
- 5:32Speaker 2: because he is every offensive coordinator's dream. Yeah, there's some
- 5:37Speaker 2: rough things around the edges that they got to clean
- 5:39Speaker 2: up and they got to fix. But his ability with
- 5:43Speaker 2: his arm talent to access any quadrant of the field.
- 5:46Speaker 2: There's no throw or no play call that's off the
- 5:50Speaker 2: books because he can't get it there. He can throw
- 5:54Speaker 2: the ball outside the numbers from the middle of the field.
- 5:57Speaker 2: He can drive the ball on the backside, dig through
- 5:59Speaker 2: the middle of the field. He can hit the post
- 6:01Speaker 2: fifty yards down the field on a dime. He can
- 6:03Speaker 2: do it all. He has mobility, instructural mobility, and off
- 6:07Speaker 2: script mobility. We saw zone read right on the goal line.
- 6:11Speaker 2: You have that at your repertoire. Now you have the
- 6:13Speaker 2: ability for him to run around and make plays off
- 6:16Speaker 2: script if he has to. You have every single button
- 6:19Speaker 2: that you would want to possibly push as an offensive coordinator,
- 6:21Speaker 2: you can push with Drake May as your quarterback. And
- 6:25Speaker 2: now we're in like the training montage scene of Rocky three, right,
- 6:31Speaker 2: or we haven't. We haven't rased Apollo yet on the beach.
- 6:34Speaker 2: We haven't gotten back in the ring with Clubber. But
- 6:37Speaker 2: we're like we're in the montage where I have the
- 6:39Speaker 2: tigers like starting to play a little bit in the background, right,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and he's doing the jump ropes and Apollo Creed's like,
- 6:45Speaker 2: I have the Tiger. I the tiger, right, and he's
- 6:47Speaker 2: doing the speedbag and and all this kind of stuff.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And now now my mojo's back a little bit. I'm like,
- 6:52Speaker 2: all right, wait a second here, maybe I wasn't all
- 6:55Speaker 2: that wrong. And now we're at the point where I
- 7:00Speaker 2: just feel like we can compromise. How's that Because I'm
- 7:05Speaker 2: a fair guy, all right, So we can compromise for
- 7:09Speaker 2: all the people that are out there that And we
- 7:10Speaker 2: argued about this plenty in the off season, and this
- 7:13Speaker 2: was sort of our dead period topic of conversation. A
- 7:17Speaker 2: lot of shows we can compromise. I'll give you to
- 7:22Speaker 2: week five.
- 7:23Speaker 1: That's okay, So it's funny you say that. I didn't
- 7:26Speaker 1: want to interrupt that take give me one second, but
- 7:29Speaker 1: mark that concept of week five though.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Just keep that.
- 7:31Speaker 1: I'll give you to week five, okay, okay, I would
- 7:34Speaker 1: do week one.
- 7:35Speaker 2: You know me.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I've been Week one since April. Finish the take in all.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think week five. It's funny. I was going to
- 7:40Speaker 1: come in here saying Week five two, and I have
- 7:42Speaker 1: my reasons.
- 7:43Speaker 2: So Week five gets everybody what they want. It gives
- 7:48Speaker 2: them a month to sort of figure everything out offensively.
- 7:51Speaker 2: We hear all the time that from Belichick and the
- 7:53Speaker 2: Belichick days that September has now turned into an extension
- 7:57Speaker 2: of the preseason. You're figuring out who you are, You're
- 8:00Speaker 2: figuring out your best combinations, You're figuring out what scheme
- 8:04Speaker 2: and what your identity is going to be offensively. So
- 8:07Speaker 2: let Jacobi Brissett be the test dummy, right. Let him
- 8:14Speaker 2: go out there and settle down the offensive line, figure
- 8:18Speaker 2: out how they need to play to win football games,
- 8:20Speaker 2: figure out their identity offensively, get through a gauntlet to
- 8:25Speaker 2: start the season a little bit there. Bengals, Seahawks, Jets, Niners,
- 8:30Speaker 2: really good defenses, Big lou in Week one. McDonald now
- 8:34Speaker 2: out in Seattle. These are guys that know how to
- 8:38Speaker 2: spin the dial on quarterbacks and how to get after quarterbacks.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Last point I'll make and then you can jump in here.
- 8:47Speaker 2: That basically puts Drake May into a college football season
- 8:51Speaker 2: where he's playing thirteen games, which is right around where
- 8:55Speaker 2: he how many games he played the last two years
- 8:57Speaker 2: at North Carolina twelve and fourteen two years ago because
- 9:01Speaker 2: he had the ACC camp and the bowl game, So
- 9:03Speaker 2: fourteen two years ago twelve last year. So we talk
- 9:08Speaker 2: about the rookie wall and just the length of the
- 9:12Speaker 2: season that's so much longer in the NFL, and the
- 9:15Speaker 2: mental grind that that can be. So now in week five,
- 9:20Speaker 2: we've gotten through the first month to get everything hopefully
- 9:23Speaker 2: settled down. We figured out our best five along the
- 9:26Speaker 2: offensive line, we know who our receivers are going to be,
- 9:28Speaker 2: we know what the play calling is going to look like.
- 9:31Speaker 2: We've gotten through the gauntlet. We've gotten Drake May over
- 9:34Speaker 2: the rookie wall and into a more college football esque season.
- 9:39Speaker 2: And I get what I want because I get Drake
- 9:41Speaker 2: May out there for the majority of the season. So
- 9:44Speaker 2: that's my compromise to end our argument of all arguments
- 9:49Speaker 2: finally of when he should play, and to the listeners
- 9:53Speaker 2: out there and to the people out there that are
- 9:55Speaker 2: worried about him playing behind this line and everything week five.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Any longer than that to me is dragging your feet
- 10:02Speaker 2: and wasting time. And I think a lot of the
- 10:05Speaker 2: things that we see with Drake when it comes to footwork, timing,
- 10:11Speaker 2: you know, drop back, sinking to his routes, like all
- 10:13Speaker 2: those different things that you know, the JT. Osullivan's and
- 10:16Speaker 2: the Dan Orlovski's and all these people harp on a
- 10:18Speaker 2: lot Chris Sims, those things, to me, are only going
- 10:22Speaker 2: to improve by playing. I don't see how you improve
- 10:27Speaker 2: his decisiveness, his ability to sync up with the routes,
- 10:32Speaker 2: his ability to drop back pass on a five step
- 10:35Speaker 2: drop and hit a hitch you know, in time and
- 10:37Speaker 2: all that. I don't know how you do all that
- 10:38Speaker 2: kind of stuff and train all that kind of stuff
- 10:41Speaker 2: in practice, because it doesn't move the same in practice.
- 10:44Speaker 2: The speed of the game is not the same. So
- 10:48Speaker 2: that's why I've always thought that he should play. And
- 10:51Speaker 2: I think what we saw last Thursday night was that
- 10:53Speaker 2: he has enough of the baseline foundational stuff that it's
- 10:57Speaker 2: not going to be a disaster if he plays. So
- 10:59Speaker 2: Week five is my compromise.
- 11:01Speaker 1: What say you, So, you made a lot of good
- 11:04Speaker 1: points in the college football element of that is excellent.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Didn't expect that to be a good college football take things? Yeah,
- 11:10Speaker 1: so I And at the same time, and this is
- 11:12Speaker 1: where I'll come back the other way. Well, let me
- 11:14Speaker 1: start here to your point of that that stuff doesn't
- 11:16Speaker 1: get improved in practice. I think it can improve in
- 11:19Speaker 1: practice to an extent. Now, yes, eventually you got a play.
- 11:23Speaker 1: But that's where Gerard Mayo talked about this. I think
- 11:28Speaker 1: it was Monday right, that it's important for Drake May
- 11:32Speaker 1: to get reps with the starters, to build chemistry with them. Yeah,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and he still hasn't done that, and you've kind of
- 11:37Speaker 1: run out of time for that to happen in terms
- 11:40Speaker 1: of week one. So that's where if he was going
- 11:43Speaker 1: to start week one, I think they would have had
- 11:45Speaker 1: to start this process a while ago. I yeah, I'm
- 11:47Speaker 1: with you. I still think taking time to figure out
- 11:50Speaker 1: the offensive line, figure out your offensive identity, get guys
- 11:54Speaker 1: healthy too. I think, you know, potentially having Kendrick Borne back,
- 11:57Speaker 1: maybe not by week five, but yeah, relatively early in
- 12:01Speaker 1: Drake May's tenure, Hunter Henry, if he's going to miss time,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I think there is value in that. I will say
- 12:09Speaker 1: on the flip side, where I've kind of come back,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I was more you know, week ate nine, ten, where
- 12:14Speaker 1: I'm now looking at that week five, really weeks five
- 12:17Speaker 1: or six, however you want to split it, is the
- 12:21Speaker 1: locker room. I think Drake May is starting to prove
- 12:23Speaker 1: to guys that they can win with him, that he's
- 12:26Speaker 1: a guy that's gonna make them competitive. And we did
- 12:28Speaker 1: this with Mac Jones and Bailey's Appy last year. I
- 12:30Speaker 1: know this is something Scott Zolak has been very big on.
- 12:33Speaker 1: The guys in that locker room, the other fifty one
- 12:35Speaker 1: guys outside of Jacoby and Drake May, and I call
- 12:39Speaker 1: it forty nine take out Joe, Milton, Bailey's Appy, right,
- 12:41Speaker 1: those other forty nine guys outside of the quarterbacks, they
- 12:45Speaker 1: I don't want to say they don't care about the
- 12:47Speaker 1: development of Drake May, but they want to play, they
- 12:51Speaker 1: want to win, they want to put up numbers, they
- 12:52Speaker 1: want to get paid. All of that. They ultimately want
- 12:55Speaker 1: the guy out there that's going to give them the
- 12:57Speaker 1: best chance to achieve their goals. Yeah, and if the
- 12:59Speaker 1: locker room leaves, Drake May as that guy more so
- 13:02Speaker 1: than Jacober said, and they can believe both of themore.
- 13:04Speaker 1: But if the locker room starts to believe Drake May
- 13:06Speaker 1: is that guy morened Jacober said. If the locker room
- 13:08Speaker 1: believed Coober, sat isn't going to get them there. And
- 13:10Speaker 1: he's had a rough week week and a half here.
- 13:12Speaker 1: That's gonna put a lot of pressure on the coaching staff. Now,
- 13:15Speaker 1: for that to happen, Drake May had to give them
- 13:16Speaker 1: something to believe in. And I think over the last
- 13:19Speaker 1: week you've seen that for the first time, and that
- 13:21Speaker 1: to me is a major change. And I talked about this, Evan,
- 13:24Speaker 1: if you remember go before camp about the golfer Drake
- 13:28Speaker 1: May was not to win the starting job. Would be
- 13:29Speaker 1: great if he did, but the goldfer Drake May was
- 13:31Speaker 1: not to win the starting job. The golfer Drake May
- 13:33Speaker 1: was to put pressure on the coaches, put pressure on
- 13:36Speaker 1: the organization and close that window, decrease that timeline that
- 13:41Speaker 1: the coaches had to sit him. He has started to
- 13:44Speaker 1: do that. Now, why week five I think is perfect.
- 13:48Speaker 1: He's not gonna like you can even admit, he's not
- 13:51Speaker 1: gonna be ready for week one in the sense that
- 13:54Speaker 1: what is he really going to accomplish working with the
- 13:58Speaker 1: starters for the first time in three practices and at
- 14:03Speaker 1: best half a preseason game. Is he going to get
- 14:06Speaker 1: the kind of chemistry that he needs with that group
- 14:09Speaker 1: in the next four days? He's not, I think, would
- 14:11Speaker 1: you agree with that?
- 14:12Speaker 2: Well, yeah, but they do have two more weeks after that,
- 14:15Speaker 2: Like they're gonna have all week next week and all
- 14:17Speaker 2: week the following week.
- 14:17Speaker 1: But you need to decide who your starter is before that,
- 14:22Speaker 1: because you're not gonna you need to prepare for the game.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You don't Sundays, not when when the game starts. The
- 14:30Speaker 1: game starts the week before, so realistically, it's three practices
- 14:33Speaker 1: in the game, so he's not gonna have time to
- 14:35Speaker 1: do that. I also just don't think you want and
- 14:37Speaker 1: Dungeon Kobe Ver said that sends a really bad message,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and Seattle Mike McDonald good defense, all of that home
- 14:43Speaker 1: opener too, Like, yeah, i'd sit him there. Then you
- 14:47Speaker 1: have a short week ye against one of the best
- 14:49Speaker 1: defense in football, even if he looks ready. Short week, No,
- 14:53Speaker 1: give him the full week to prepare. You're doing the
- 14:55Speaker 1: kid a disservice at that point. And then after that,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you've got to go all the way across the country.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I do too, Like you're yeah, I know you're telling.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Me so tough. Evan has to travel and watch football games.
- 15:07Speaker 1: You've got to go all the way across the country
- 15:10Speaker 1: to play with what I believe, Evan is the best
- 15:12Speaker 1: defense in football. If they're not number one their top three, right,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and that's it. That's a tough sell too, and just
- 15:18Speaker 1: a super Bowl team. And I don't really care what
- 15:20Speaker 1: the offense does, but.
- 15:21Speaker 2: I'm just better than you.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Then you come home, you have two games against Miami
- 15:27Speaker 1: and Houston, who are decent teams but manageable. You're not
- 15:30Speaker 1: really gonna find a soft saw spot in the schedule
- 15:33Speaker 1: unless you wait till December, which we both agree is
- 15:35Speaker 1: way too long. So the way I look at it,
- 15:38Speaker 1: first two weeks, let the kid watch and observe. You
- 15:41Speaker 1: have a short week to get ready for the Jets.
- 15:43Speaker 1: That's just a fire drill. You then have some more
- 15:46Speaker 1: time you can start to prepare Drake May and still
- 15:51Speaker 1: give Jacoby Brissett a full week of preparation for that
- 15:55Speaker 1: Niners game. Maybe if it turns into a blowout, maybe
- 15:58Speaker 1: Drake May even gets his late in that game against
- 16:01Speaker 1: the Niners. And if you like what you see week
- 16:05Speaker 1: five against Miami, boom, there you go. I think that.
- 16:08Speaker 1: And if you don't like what you see one more
- 16:11Speaker 1: week Houston, then it gets a little weird. I don't
- 16:14Speaker 1: love his first start being overseas if they're gonna lose
- 16:17Speaker 1: a day of practice on the travel and then you
- 16:20Speaker 1: get to an easier stretch. This is like the worst
- 16:22Speaker 1: case scenario eight nine, ten Jets Titans, Bears. That's like
- 16:27Speaker 1: the absolute latest. Yeah, he should come in, but week
- 16:30Speaker 1: five against Miami, for a lot of reasons, makes a
- 16:33Speaker 1: lot of sense if you have to push it to
- 16:35Speaker 1: week six against Jacksonville. But to me, that's the window,
- 16:38Speaker 1: and I think he's done that what he needed to do,
- 16:41Speaker 1: and assuming he continues to do it of putting the
- 16:44Speaker 1: pressure on the coaching staff to make the move sooner
- 16:47Speaker 1: rather than later, especially if Jacoby burs said isn't playing well.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yeah, all great points, And I have one more thing
- 16:54Speaker 2: that I want to get to because it just it
- 16:58Speaker 2: irks me. It's probably just a me thing, But I
- 17:01Speaker 2: have to get on the soapbox for a second here,
- 17:03Speaker 2: But I do want to let you guys know that
- 17:05Speaker 2: the phone lines are open. Eighty five to five PATS
- 17:07Speaker 2: five hundred is the phone number. Web radio at Patriots
- 17:10Speaker 2: dot com is the email address if you want to
- 17:12Speaker 2: jump into the conversation. We have some emails that we'll
- 17:14Speaker 2: get to here in a second after we finish our
- 17:17Speaker 2: opening thoughts and all that kind of stuff. But one
- 17:19Speaker 2: last thing, because this is it just gets under my
- 17:23Speaker 2: skin and I just have to to get this off
- 17:25Speaker 2: my chest. I feel as though the commentary on Drake,
- 17:31Speaker 2: may mostly nationally but just in general, is so contradictory,
- 17:41Speaker 2: and it bugs me. It irritates me. I'll give you
- 17:44Speaker 2: some examples, like I always look at this whole situation,
- 17:49Speaker 2: and somebody told me to look at it this way
- 17:50Speaker 2: when it comes to scouting, Like there's macro level issues
- 17:53Speaker 2: and there's micro level issues.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Right.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Macro level issues are for quarterbacks to me, are just
- 17:59Speaker 2: like the physical trait. It's like you have to have
- 18:00Speaker 2: the requisite arm talent you want him to be on
- 18:03Speaker 2: the you know, the bigger side of things, like the
- 18:06Speaker 2: Drake is six foot four and a half two hundred
- 18:08Speaker 2: and twenty five pounds, like you want to have those
- 18:10Speaker 2: boxes checked. I'm from a physical standpoint, and then what
- 18:13Speaker 2: I would call just like a general understanding of the position.
- 18:17Speaker 2: This is not a pro day, right, We're not routes
- 18:19Speaker 2: against air, right. This is football, the tackle football. So
- 18:22Speaker 2: you have to have a general feel for an instinctual
- 18:25Speaker 2: feel for the game and coverages and reading defenses and
- 18:29Speaker 2: just knowing ball security like all that kind of stuff.
- 18:33Speaker 2: It's a general feel for the game. Another example, Zack
- 18:37Speaker 2: Wilson checked all the physical boxes, right, But Zack Wilson doesn't. Yeah,
- 18:42Speaker 2: but Zack Wilson doesn't have all that like innate instinct
- 18:45Speaker 2: for the position, right. He doesn't. He doesn't understand, like
- 18:49Speaker 2: he doesn't look like a football player, Like he looks
- 18:51Speaker 2: like somebody who's lost most of the time. When I
- 18:55Speaker 2: watched Drake May he obviously checks all the physical boxes
- 18:59Speaker 2: that you're looking for, but I also see just a
- 19:01Speaker 2: general understanding of how to play the position at a
- 19:05Speaker 2: high level. Just a couple examples from the game. We
- 19:09Speaker 2: all have broken down or seen the incut to Javon
- 19:12Speaker 2: Baker a million times at this point, and that's a
- 19:14Speaker 2: full field progression. You know, he goes through the progression
- 19:17Speaker 2: on time. He hits the backside dig route. That's an
- 19:19Speaker 2: NFL play. Put that up there, that's the NFL concept.
- 19:24Speaker 2: That's an NFL staple play in the West Coast offense,
- 19:26Speaker 2: and that's him running it at a high level. The
- 19:30Speaker 2: deep bomb to Javon Baker later on in the game,
- 19:33Speaker 2: that is a pretty exotic coverage for a preseason game.
- 19:38Speaker 2: By that Vic Fangio called that is a he calls
- 19:41Speaker 2: it tricks, And what it is is it looks like
- 19:45Speaker 2: it's middle of the field open, too high safety, And
- 19:47Speaker 2: what happens is is that they have an adjustment. When
- 19:51Speaker 2: you get middle of the field open and you have
- 19:52Speaker 2: a crossing route from number three or number two on
- 19:54Speaker 2: the inside, usually middle of field open signals that you're
- 19:57Speaker 2: gonna throw the ball in that area, right, You're gonna
- 20:00Speaker 2: throw the crosser, or you're gonna throw whatever is, you know,
- 20:02Speaker 2: over the middle of the field. And so what Fangio
- 20:05Speaker 2: has is he has a backside tag for the safety
- 20:07Speaker 2: called tricks that that safety now is actually going to
- 20:11Speaker 2: almost turn into a robber like he would in one
- 20:13Speaker 2: rad or one robber, and he's gonna jump that crossing ground.
- 20:17Speaker 2: So what that leaves is that leaves the backside receiver,
- 20:21Speaker 2: the ex receiver on the backside. He is now one
- 20:23Speaker 2: on one without any help in the middle of the field.
- 20:26Speaker 2: So Drake May reads out this entire thing and then
- 20:29Speaker 2: recognizes that Javon Baker is one on one down the
- 20:31Speaker 2: field without a post safety up top right, and he
- 20:35Speaker 2: rips the post. That's a pretty advanced level nuanced coverage
- 20:42Speaker 2: to be reading out that he read out at a
- 20:44Speaker 2: high level, so he has a lot of that innate ability,
- 20:49Speaker 2: baseline level knowledge of how to read defenses, so all
- 20:54Speaker 2: the micro level things that people nitpick him on. And
- 20:58Speaker 2: I felt this way during the pre draft process too.
- 21:01Speaker 2: It bugged me then too because it was like, what
- 21:03Speaker 2: are we talking about here, Like we're saying that this
- 21:07Speaker 2: guy is going to be a bust because he took
- 21:10Speaker 2: a three step drop instead of a five step drop
- 21:13Speaker 2: and has dropped it in time up with the routes,
- 21:15Speaker 2: Like you don't think that's coachable, Like you don't think
- 21:17Speaker 2: that that's going to be fixed. It's already getting fixed.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Like we're already seventy five percent of the way there.
- 21:24Speaker 2: You know, people harve a lot on his throwing motion.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Is you know, he he dips the ball, maybe a
- 21:29Speaker 2: little bit more. It's a little longer than what you want.
- 21:33Speaker 2: That's another thing that over time is just it's not
- 21:36Speaker 2: a big issue. It's just not especially when you have
- 21:39Speaker 2: the type of arm talent that he has, Like if
- 21:41Speaker 2: you had an arm that was worse than his, like
- 21:44Speaker 2: below average arm talent, and you have a long motion,
- 21:47Speaker 2: and now you start to worry about him being able
- 21:49Speaker 2: to hit tight windows, right, because it takes forever for
- 21:51Speaker 2: the ball to come out and then there's no heat
- 21:53Speaker 2: on the ball. He doesn't have that issue. So we're
- 21:56Speaker 2: talking about like processing, anticipation, drop timing, sinking routes with
- 22:01Speaker 2: the dropbacks, like all of these quarterback minutia, like all
- 22:05Speaker 2: this detailed, nuanced type of stuff. And sometimes and I'm
- 22:11Speaker 2: I'm also really guilty of this because it's just in
- 22:14Speaker 2: when you when you're a film junkie, this just happens.
- 22:17Speaker 2: You don't necessarily see the forest for the trees, right,
- 22:20Speaker 2: Like you're you're so caught up in the film, in
- 22:22Speaker 2: the details of the film, I try to tell you,
- 22:24Speaker 2: and you're you're watching his footwork and you're like, oh
- 22:27Speaker 2: wait a second. You know, on this drop here, like
- 22:30Speaker 2: his foot is like pointed, like you know, forty five
- 22:33Speaker 2: and I'd really like it to be at ninety and
- 22:35Speaker 2: you're in, you're like making all these things up on
- 22:38Speaker 2: the fly. That is just not going to be the
- 22:40Speaker 2: reason why he passes or fails in the NFL. And
- 22:44Speaker 2: when I hear commentary about Drake may I see a
- 22:48Speaker 2: lot of that type of nitpicking about his footwork, his
- 22:52Speaker 2: drop back timing, you know, all this kind of stuff,
- 22:55Speaker 2: and I'm just like, really like, you don't think that
- 22:58Speaker 2: this is gonna get fixed, Like with all of the
- 23:01Speaker 2: resources at his disposal disposal Now you have private quarterback coaches,
- 23:06Speaker 2: you have offensive coordinators, you have quarterback coach here in
- 23:09Speaker 2: New England, you have all this hierarchy of people that
- 23:11Speaker 2: are going to help him through this process. And what
- 23:15Speaker 2: I've seen from him from start to finish a training campus,
- 23:17Speaker 2: he's already making strides in these areas like it's already better,
- 23:21Speaker 2: yeah than it was in college, and it was already
- 23:23Speaker 2: it's already better than it was three weeks ago, and
- 23:25Speaker 2: it's just gonna keep on improving. I'm not telling you
- 23:28Speaker 2: he's gonna never make a mistake or never have a
- 23:30Speaker 2: bad game or never you know, have issues in the NFL.
- 23:33Speaker 2: There's obviously gonna be bumps along the road. But I
- 23:37Speaker 2: just don't I don't know if it does any good
- 23:40Speaker 2: for people to break down his tape like that and
- 23:44Speaker 2: dissect it in such detail. I don't know if that's
- 23:48Speaker 2: actually telling the right story. And that That's where I've
- 23:51Speaker 2: always been with Drake. And the last thing I'll say
- 23:54Speaker 2: is just with Caleb Williams, in the game. The other day,
- 23:58Speaker 2: I actually watched a lot of Caleb william tape just
- 24:00Speaker 2: out of curiosity. I love Caleb Williams. I had him
- 24:03Speaker 2: as the number one quarterback in the draft. He was
- 24:04Speaker 2: a surefire slam dunk, number one overall pick to Chicago.
- 24:09Speaker 2: He has as many rookie mistakes on his film as
- 24:12Speaker 2: Drake May does. Nobody is out there saying that it's
- 24:14Speaker 2: crazy that Chicago's going to start him week one, that
- 24:17Speaker 2: that's it's almost a given, Like no one is think
- 24:22Speaker 2: thinks that even is remotely controversial that he's going to
- 24:25Speaker 2: start week one, even though he's missing reads and doing
- 24:29Speaker 2: things that rookie quarterbacks do and he's got a ways
- 24:32Speaker 2: to go. Everybody is just in agreement that that's a
- 24:36Speaker 2: consensus that he should start week one. But then when
- 24:39Speaker 2: Drake May misses a read, it's like, well, this is
- 24:42Speaker 2: why he needs to sit for a year, and it
- 24:44Speaker 2: just isn't consistent. So you're gonna hear a lot of commentary.
- 24:48Speaker 2: It's a long way away of saying that I have
- 24:51Speaker 2: all the respect in the world for a lot of
- 24:52Speaker 2: these guys that do it. You know that break down
- 24:54Speaker 2: the film on the national stage I love all of it.
- 24:58Speaker 2: I eat all of it up, I watch it myself,
- 25:01Speaker 2: but don't lose sight of the big picture here, just
- 25:04Speaker 2: because there's little under the hood. There's like little minutions
- 25:09Speaker 2: of his game that need to be cleaned up. That's
- 25:11Speaker 2: what they are. It's not macro level, it's micro level.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And I just hate that we harp on the micro
- 25:17Speaker 2: so much and point to these as like fatal flaws,
- 25:20Speaker 2: like this is why he's gonna stink is because of
- 25:23Speaker 2: you know, footwork rhythm issues. It's like that will come
- 25:26Speaker 2: in time, and that's why I want him to play,
- 25:29Speaker 2: because I feel like it will come in time faster
- 25:32Speaker 2: and more seamlessly if he plays. I don't know how
- 25:34Speaker 2: you get him to play more in rhythm and on
- 25:37Speaker 2: time with his feet by watching Jacob were said on
- 25:42Speaker 2: the sideline.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Well, I cause see I'm doing in practice.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's that's practice. Like what we saw from
- 25:47Speaker 2: the practice, recent practices last week before the Thursday night
- 25:52Speaker 2: game and then the Thursday night game is that it's different,
- 25:55Speaker 2: Like he is a different He was a different dude
- 25:57Speaker 2: on Thursday night than he was in the joint practice
- 25:59Speaker 2: on two day. You know, when you're in the red
- 26:01Speaker 2: non contact jersey. When you're doing all these different things
- 26:04Speaker 2: in practice, it's just it's a different animal than the game.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Well, okay, but do you think he's doing it? He
- 26:11Speaker 1: could be better at it in practice, right, yes?
- 26:14Speaker 2: Or no?
- 26:15Speaker 1: He can get these things you're talking about.
- 26:16Speaker 2: He can get better at it, But I don't really
- 26:18Speaker 2: think you truly know if he's there, and if he's.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Not right, why not wait until he's at a level
- 26:25Speaker 1: at practice that you're comfortable with it before you put
- 26:28Speaker 1: him in the game. That's what I'm saying, Like he
- 26:29Speaker 1: can you're acting like they're just going to leave him
- 26:32Speaker 1: in the locker room during practices for those first No.
- 26:35Speaker 2: I'm not acting like that. But I feel like he's
- 26:37Speaker 2: already shown that he's that he's pretty much there in practice,
- 26:41Speaker 2: especially post Eagles game, you know, like since these last
- 26:45Speaker 2: handful of practices, and we'll see what it looks like
- 26:47Speaker 2: for the rest of this week and on Sunday. But
- 26:50Speaker 2: if if his momentum is still pointing upwards by the
- 26:54Speaker 2: time we get through that Commander's game on Sunday night,
- 26:56Speaker 2: I feel like he's already achieved that, Like he's already
- 26:58Speaker 2: checked that box.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Like I I would just I would just one what
- 27:02Speaker 1: get the offensive line figured out?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah? No, that, But I'm talking about just about him being.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Already Yeah No, I think Look, it's our job to
- 27:09Speaker 1: talk about what we see and that comes with the
- 27:11Speaker 1: good and the bad, and there are parts of his
- 27:13Speaker 1: game that need to be improved. It's about understanding that
- 27:15Speaker 1: in context. Yeah, saying that you know there are things
- 27:18Speaker 1: that could be better doesn't mean he's going to be bad.
- 27:21Speaker 1: That's just there's no such thing as a perfect prospect, right,
- 27:25Speaker 1: He's got to continue to get better and there are
- 27:27Speaker 1: things he needs to get better at, but that doesn't
- 27:29Speaker 1: mean he's not going to be good. There are things
- 27:32Speaker 1: a lot of players need to get better at, even
- 27:34Speaker 1: good players need to get better at. So I yeah,
- 27:38Speaker 1: I I I'm with you in that. Maybe some of
- 27:41Speaker 1: it gets gets carried away. I think maybe the organization's
- 27:44Speaker 1: under a little bit more of a spotlight in terms
- 27:47Speaker 1: of quarter develop quarterback development, considering how the last three
- 27:50Speaker 1: years have gone. Yeah, albeit it's a new coaching staff
- 27:53Speaker 1: and they weren't necessarily the ones he's leading the way
- 27:56Speaker 1: making those decisions the last three years. But it's just
- 27:59Speaker 1: about understanding it context saying there's things he needs to
- 28:01Speaker 1: improve on, and saying, you know, he has a chance
- 28:05Speaker 1: to be a really good NFL quarterback. Those two are
- 28:07Speaker 1: not mutually exclusive.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Yeah, last thing on this and then we'll move on
- 28:11Speaker 2: the other thing that I really feel strongly about with
- 28:14Speaker 2: this is that when we started doing this, you know,
- 28:19Speaker 2: covering the team and covering the draft and watching prospects
- 28:22Speaker 2: and having takes on prospects. The person that changed it
- 28:27Speaker 2: all for me, really two quarterbacks changed it all for
- 28:31Speaker 2: me with quarterbacks, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Right, those two guys,
- 28:36Speaker 2: traditionally speaking, especially Josh Allen, I just didn't see it
- 28:41Speaker 2: with in the draft. I was like, there's this is
- 28:43Speaker 2: too much of a project, Like there's too many broken parts.
- 28:46Speaker 2: This is too much of a project. It's gonna take.
- 28:50Speaker 2: It's gonna be an absolute outlier if this guy succeeds.
- 28:53Speaker 2: What I feel like we've learned about quarterbacks and all
- 28:56Speaker 2: this it relates to all like the minutia and the
- 28:59Speaker 2: details and the nuance as I was just talking about,
- 29:01Speaker 2: with all of his footwork and all this crap. Right,
- 29:05Speaker 2: the game has evolved. The game has evolved at that position.
- 29:09Speaker 2: It's no longer and I'm not saying that stuff isn't important,
- 29:13Speaker 2: so don't get me twisted. But the quarterbacks that are
- 29:17Speaker 2: playing in today's NFL that are succeeding are no longer
- 29:21Speaker 2: in the Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees archetype, right,
- 29:24Speaker 2: like those guys that were dominant pre snap, extremely fast
- 29:29Speaker 2: dies and extremely fast processors, deadly accurate like all that
- 29:34Speaker 2: kind of stuff that we saw with those three Hall
- 29:36Speaker 2: of Famers pocket passers, right that were just at another
- 29:41Speaker 2: level in terms of that. Now, when you look at
- 29:44Speaker 2: these quarterbacks that are succeeding in the league twenty plus
- 29:48Speaker 2: years later, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Justin Herbert
- 29:55Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts, you know, the list goes on and on.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Those guys don't always play from perfect bases and platforms
- 30:03Speaker 2: with their feet. They don't always throw the ball, you know,
- 30:06Speaker 2: over the top Brady style, like we were so trained
- 30:11Speaker 2: from a young age here to think that's the way
- 30:13Speaker 2: you throw a football. I would also throw, you know,
- 30:16Speaker 2: in this other category, I would throw Aaron Rodgers in
- 30:18Speaker 2: there too, because he doesn't play the quote unquote right
- 30:21Speaker 2: way either. So all these old like quarterback tropes that
- 30:26Speaker 2: we are so used to these guys don't play that
- 30:29Speaker 2: way anymore. And I think the part that confuses me
- 30:34Speaker 2: is that when Jordan Love drops back to pass and
- 30:37Speaker 2: throws one of his like fadeaways that's become like a
- 30:40Speaker 2: staple of his game, everybody goes crazy about it, right,
- 30:44Speaker 2: Like it's like, oh my God, Like, look at that
- 30:46Speaker 2: he threw forty yards off his back foot with a
- 30:48Speaker 2: pressure in his face. This is incredible, And nobody talks
- 30:53Speaker 2: about the fact that his feet aren't right on the play,
- 30:56Speaker 2: Like it doesn't come up. It doesn't come up that
- 30:58Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers throws off of both feet off the ground
- 31:02Speaker 2: like it because throwing dimes, So like what difference does
- 31:05Speaker 2: it make how he throws? And I feel like that's
- 31:08Speaker 2: the same thing with Drake May, Like the people are
- 31:11Speaker 2: trying to turn him into this like precision pocket passer
- 31:15Speaker 2: where he's brady and he's like reading out coverages and
- 31:18Speaker 2: he's pre snapped dominating and he's perfect mechanically, and like,
- 31:22Speaker 2: that's just not quarterback play anymore. It's not gonna be Caleb,
- 31:26Speaker 2: it's not gonna be Jaden Daniels, it's not gonna be
- 31:28Speaker 2: Drake May. Like that's not what it's gonna be anymore.
- 31:31Speaker 2: So I feel like we have to adjust a little
- 31:32Speaker 2: bit in that regard to.
- 31:33Speaker 1: All Right, I'm off my Just one thing I'd add
- 31:36Speaker 1: to that is some of those guys you named were
- 31:39Speaker 1: not highly regarded coming out of college, even if they
- 31:42Speaker 1: were first round picks, they weren't necessarily consensus first round picks,
- 31:45Speaker 1: or people thought there was a mistake or in the
- 31:48Speaker 1: pick or whatever, and the teams did a great job
- 31:52Speaker 1: of developing those players. Yeah, goes back to another draft
- 31:55Speaker 1: staple of mind, especially when it comes to quarterbacks, nature
- 31:59Speaker 1: verse nurture. Drafting the right guy is only half the battle.
- 32:04Speaker 1: You've got to put him in a place to succeed
- 32:08Speaker 1: when it comes to guys like Josh Allen, when it
- 32:10Speaker 1: comes to guys like Jordan Love, even Justin Herbert, who
- 32:12Speaker 1: a lot of people were not high on coming out
- 32:14Speaker 1: of Oregon. And I would say all those teams, at
- 32:17Speaker 1: least the Bills did for a time, But all of
- 32:19Speaker 1: those teams did a great job of doing what was
- 32:21Speaker 1: best for those quarterbacks and not fighting them in their development.
- 32:27Speaker 2: And for.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Actually I think all three of that, well, Herbert's situations different,
- 32:33Speaker 1: but for all three of them. Essentially, they were ready
- 32:35Speaker 1: for them to start the season on the bench, in
- 32:37Speaker 1: Love's case, multiple seasons, Herbert. They were ready and then
- 32:41Speaker 1: the training staff stabbed Tyrod Taylor. And I think Josh
- 32:44Speaker 1: Allen didn't start what the first like three or four
- 32:46Speaker 1: games of his rookie or something like that.
- 32:47Speaker 2: He came in like the third week.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Of the Yeah, so it wasn't a long time, but
- 32:50Speaker 1: they were ready to sit him on the bench because
- 32:52Speaker 1: that's what they felt was best. Now, there's other guys
- 32:54Speaker 1: that are good that started right away, and maybe that's
- 32:56Speaker 1: what those teams felt were best. There were also some
- 32:59Speaker 1: guys that sad and that wasn't what was best for them.
- 33:01Speaker 1: And there are some guys that started right away and
- 33:03Speaker 1: that wasn't what was best for them. So I get
- 33:05Speaker 1: the point you're making about quarterback play is going to
- 33:07Speaker 1: look different, But I also think the lesson be learned
- 33:09Speaker 1: there is they Drake May. You can't put his development
- 33:17Speaker 1: in a box and say, all right, what the Bills
- 33:19Speaker 1: did with Josh Allen, do that, what the Packers did
- 33:22Speaker 1: with Jordan Love do that? And if it doesn't look
- 33:24Speaker 1: like that, oh everything's going wrong. No, you've got to
- 33:28Speaker 1: let him dictate it and put him in a position
- 33:31Speaker 1: to succeed. That is really the old That's what it
- 33:34Speaker 1: comes down to developing a quarterback. You've got to let
- 33:37Speaker 1: the quarterback dictate the timeline and you've got to put
- 33:40Speaker 1: him in a position to succeed rather than trying to
- 33:42Speaker 1: put him in a box that he doesn't fit in.
- 33:44Speaker 1: So far, I think they've done more good than bad
- 33:48Speaker 1: with that with Drake May. I would say there's some
- 33:51Speaker 1: things I don't love.
- 33:53Speaker 2: I've liked how they've coached him on the on the details,
- 33:56Speaker 2: I think mechanically.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Like working with him individually, they've done a very good job.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I would have liked to see him get some even
- 34:04Speaker 1: if their low impact reps, get some more reps with
- 34:07Speaker 1: that starting offensive line, just to build his confidence. You
- 34:09Speaker 1: could tell he was a little shaken early in camp
- 34:12Speaker 1: playing behind what was really the third string offensive line
- 34:14Speaker 1: when the starters are out and the backups are with
- 34:16Speaker 1: the starters. But I think they've done so far. And
- 34:20Speaker 1: they went out and tried to get him Brandon Ayuk
- 34:22Speaker 1: and know they didn't, But I think they've done a
- 34:24Speaker 1: decent job so far of the development part with Drake May,
- 34:29Speaker 1: which is going to be important.
- 34:29Speaker 2: In those Yeah, I agree. I feel as though that
- 34:32Speaker 2: they've done a pretty good job with him in terms
- 34:35Speaker 2: of the quarterback coaching elements of it. Yeah, I feel
- 34:39Speaker 2: like his footwork has improved, and mechanically he has improved,
- 34:44Speaker 2: especially becoming more of like a rotational thrower. I think
- 34:47Speaker 2: that has gotten better for him. He's got a long
- 34:50Speaker 2: way to go, but I give them credit for that,
- 34:52Speaker 2: and I honestly would part of the reason why I
- 34:55Speaker 2: feel like it has improved too, is that it's improved
- 34:58Speaker 2: with Joe Milton.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Also, yeah, yeah, no Van Pelt so, so.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Whatever they're doing with both of those guys who are
- 35:04Speaker 2: both these raw tools. You know, I hate using project
- 35:07Speaker 2: in Drinks May's terms, but just developmental guys.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Oh, there's there's different levels of projects. Yeah, Like you know,
- 35:13Speaker 1: there's fixing a cabinet door and finishing your basement, like.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Right, And I feel like projects both of those guys
- 35:22Speaker 2: look better than they did in college. Like, yes, Joe
- 35:25Speaker 2: Milton's pocket movement is night and day, night and day
- 35:28Speaker 2: from where he was at Tennessee.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and so it's funny I got to call about
- 35:32Speaker 1: this on the Hub over the weekend. Somebody is just
- 35:34Speaker 1: unhappy with with Van Pelt and with the offense has
- 35:38Speaker 1: looked like as a whole, and basically asking, you know,
- 35:41Speaker 1: did they make a mistake? Does his offense not work?
- 35:43Speaker 1: And I've seen this sentiment out there from some Patriots fans,
- 35:47Speaker 1: like second guessing the Alex van Pelt higher because of
- 35:50Speaker 1: the performances of the offense as a whole, not just quarterback.
- 35:54Speaker 1: I get that the offense really hasn't looked great for
- 35:56Speaker 1: most of the summer, But what I would say is
- 35:58Speaker 1: when it comes to the design, the schematics, the play
- 36:01Speaker 1: calling of it, you can't judge Van Pelt yet because
- 36:05Speaker 1: they're not running his offense. They're running a very stripped
- 36:08Speaker 1: down Madden Playbook like simplified version of it, because that's
- 36:12Speaker 1: what every team does in the preseason. You're not gonna
- 36:14Speaker 1: put your offense on tape at this point, nobody does that.
- 36:18Speaker 1: That's not saying we can't judge him for it once
- 36:20Speaker 1: the regular season starts and they are running it. But
- 36:23Speaker 1: the only thing you can judge Van Pelt on really
- 36:25Speaker 1: to this point is quarterback development, and in that regard,
- 36:29Speaker 1: I think he's done a great job.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a take on the scheme itself, but
- 36:35Speaker 2: there's an email about it, so we can take let
- 36:37Speaker 2: that to us off. But let's take these phone calls first.
- 36:40Speaker 2: And these people have been waiting.
- 36:41Speaker 1: So I do have a little little NFL breaking news
- 36:44Speaker 1: that could be relevant to the paper.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Okay, one second, because I already picked up this call.
- 36:47Speaker 2: But yeah, Sean's and Vancouver.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Hey, good morning guys. I got up early this morning,
- 36:54Speaker 4: so as nice to speak with you again. Yeah, the
- 36:55Speaker 4: last week, I think I mentioned week five as as
- 37:00Speaker 4: our time for Drake May, and I agree. I think
- 37:02Speaker 4: that's that's a good a good one. I think, you know,
- 37:06Speaker 4: without Wilkins, the Dolphins defense won't be as big a
- 37:11Speaker 4: challenge and could be something a good place for him
- 37:14Speaker 4: to start, because to me, it's all about how Drake
- 37:17Speaker 4: May develops and what he's what is he going to
- 37:20Speaker 4: be like ultimately as a franchise quarterback, So it's it's
- 37:23Speaker 4: not about the wins and losses, and I'm more concerned
- 37:26Speaker 4: about how he's going to progress through this season and
- 37:29Speaker 4: then into the future.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, Sean, thanks for the phone call and as always,
- 37:34Speaker 2: thanks for listening. Yeah, I mean that we're all there.
- 37:36Speaker 2: And on one last thing, I would just add to
- 37:38Speaker 2: that too, Jacoby Brissett's play and Drake May's in development
- 37:43Speaker 2: our two separate buckets. You can't play Drake May before
- 37:48Speaker 2: he's ready just because he's already better than Jacoby bris
- 37:50Speaker 2: said right like, he he he's got to be one
- 37:53Speaker 2: hundred percent ready to me. And I hear you about
- 37:55Speaker 2: the locker room and stuff like that, and I think
- 37:57Speaker 2: that's a good point. But I just mean, just in
- 38:01Speaker 2: a vacuum, just because Jacoby Brissett has been, let's face it,
- 38:06Speaker 2: pretty terrible in the preseason. I'm not putting Drake May
- 38:09Speaker 2: in just because Jacoby Brissett is not setting the bar
- 38:12Speaker 2: high enough. In my opinion right now, it's it's not
- 38:14Speaker 2: quite cam in twenty twenty one. Like it's not that bad,
- 38:17Speaker 2: but it's not quite high enough where I feel like, oh,
- 38:20Speaker 2: he's beating out a real he's really winning this competition
- 38:25Speaker 2: over a guy that's that's pushing it. Yeah.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I said this the other day, Jacoby Verssett's performance should
- 38:31Speaker 1: not impact Drake May's development plan. Yeah, And the locker
- 38:36Speaker 1: room thing's a little different because guys buying in on
- 38:40Speaker 1: Drake May. You got to be able to tell our
- 38:43Speaker 1: guys buying in on Drake May because they believe in him,
- 38:45Speaker 1: or just because they're done with Jacoby Brissett. But Jacoby
- 38:48Speaker 1: Brissett's level of plays completely independent of Drake May's development,
- 38:51Speaker 1: and it shouldn't change the timeline.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yep, Okay, So I want to read this email or actually,
- 38:55Speaker 2: let's take this one call because this is probably gonna
- 38:57Speaker 2: be a longer discussion. David is in Maine's up. David, Hey, guys.
- 39:02Speaker 5: How's it going good?
- 39:03Speaker 2: How are you?
- 39:04Speaker 6: I'm great, Evan, You're my favorite. You really do a
- 39:07Speaker 6: good job at keeping the Unfiltered train on the track.
- 39:12Speaker 6: Jim So, I appreciate every time you're on Unfiltered.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 39:15Speaker 5: So a quick question.
- 39:16Speaker 6: I keep hearing New England has the third pick in
- 39:20Speaker 6: the when it comes to waivers, and I guess I
- 39:22Speaker 6: always thought it was just kind of a first come,
- 39:24Speaker 6: first serve thing, So I was wondering if you could
- 39:27Speaker 6: just kind of explain.
- 39:28Speaker 5: Briefly how the waivers work.
- 39:30Speaker 6: And also is it likely that you can find like
- 39:34Speaker 6: a starting caliber lineman or tackle in waivers or is
- 39:39Speaker 6: that more just a fill in the depth kind of thing.
- 39:42Speaker 6: And I'll take it off the air from there. Thanks.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Guys, Thanks David, thanks for the call. So it's a
- 39:45Speaker 2: good question. This to me is a little bit overblown
- 39:49Speaker 2: in terms of their waiver priority. So the waiver wire works. First,
- 39:53Speaker 2: there's two important things to know. First of all, until
- 39:57Speaker 2: claims start coming in, it's the draft order from last year. Yeah, right,
- 40:00Speaker 2: so Chicago has the number one claim. No, oh, Carolina
- 40:04Speaker 2: Carolina has Yeah, Carolina has the number one claim. Washington, Patriots,
- 40:09Speaker 2: so on and so forth, right, so that it's the
- 40:12Speaker 2: reverse of the draft order. It's exactly how it works.
- 40:14Speaker 2: Then the other thing I should mention, or we should mention,
- 40:18Speaker 2: is that players only go through waivers are only subject
- 40:23Speaker 2: to waivers if they have three or less accrude seasons
- 40:26Speaker 2: in the NFL. Once you get to a four accrued
- 40:28Speaker 2: seasons in the league, then you're just a street free
- 40:31Speaker 2: agent when you're released. So i'll give you an example.
- 40:35Speaker 2: A couple of years ago, the Patriots cut Brian Hoyer.
- 40:40Speaker 2: He then resigned with the practice squad for a beat. Right,
- 40:43Speaker 2: Brian Hoyer was a vested veteran, he'd been in the
- 40:46Speaker 2: league for ten years. He didn't go through waivers. The
- 40:49Speaker 2: player that would go through waivers is like Marcella's dial
- 40:53Speaker 2: a rookie, he would go through waivers. Bailey's a last year,
- 40:56Speaker 2: Bailey's appy actually this year too, right, yeah right, twenty
- 41:01Speaker 2: twenty two draft, yeah yeah, So.
- 41:03Speaker 1: And an accurrent season means six or more games played.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and so for to an extent, we're we're talking
- 41:12Speaker 2: about players that were on their rookie contracts, right like that,
- 41:15Speaker 2: that's what we're talking about in terms of waivers. So
- 41:17Speaker 2: to answer the second part of the question, are you
- 41:20Speaker 2: were not going to find a starting left tackle on waivers?
- 41:22Speaker 2: That that that's not where we're at. Like, if the player,
- 41:25Speaker 2: a young player on a team is a promising tackle
- 41:28Speaker 2: prospect that the team that he's currently on feels like
- 41:32Speaker 2: he is going to push to maybe start down the
- 41:34Speaker 2: road or has it that sort of ceiling, then why
- 41:37Speaker 2: would they be releasing that player?
- 41:39Speaker 3: Right?
- 41:40Speaker 2: It wouldn't make a waiving, I should say, that player
- 41:42Speaker 2: wouldn't make any sense. So in some respects, yes, there's
- 41:46Speaker 2: always a handful of players every single year that get
- 41:48Speaker 2: claimed on waivers that could make a fifty three man roster,
- 41:52Speaker 2: Like maybe they're your fifty second or fifty third guy.
- 41:55Speaker 2: But in terms of that guy actually making a big
- 41:58Speaker 2: impact on the on the NFL team. Not not likely.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, like especially not a tackle, especially not at that position.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Like, what was a few years ago, who was the
- 42:07Speaker 2: kid from Navy that we all knew Bill Belichick would
- 42:09Speaker 2: like be all over these like a Keenan Reynolds. They
- 42:11Speaker 2: claimed him, right, I want to say, yeah, and you
- 42:14Speaker 2: know he was here for a cup of coffee and
- 42:16Speaker 2: that was it, so that those are the types of
- 42:18Speaker 2: guys that you get on waivers. I want to read
- 42:21Speaker 2: this email from Adama because I think it's a good
- 42:24Speaker 2: it's a good jumping off point for the conversation about
- 42:27Speaker 2: Van Pelton, the scheme and stuff like that, and then
- 42:29Speaker 2: we'll do three up, three down. So he said, Uh,
- 42:32Speaker 2: he was listening to Zoe, and Zoe was talking about
- 42:35Speaker 2: how in practice, uh, the plays they were running were
- 42:39Speaker 2: not to Drake May strains, they weren't conducive to Drake
- 42:42Speaker 2: May strings. But then the preseason game they called plays
- 42:46Speaker 2: that more resembled what he did at North Carolina and
- 42:48Speaker 2: what he did in college. And the biggest difference between
- 42:52Speaker 2: the two scripts in terms of was Drake May running
- 42:56Speaker 2: the full boat of the Alex Van Pelt offense to
- 42:59Speaker 2: me was playing from under center. You know, he only
- 43:01Speaker 2: had one drop back pass attempt from under center was
- 43:06Speaker 2: the slide route play action play to Mitchell Wilcox in
- 43:09Speaker 2: the flat. That was the only time that he played
- 43:12Speaker 2: from under center in the past game. Then he also
- 43:14Speaker 2: had an aborted snap. It looked like that was probably
- 43:16Speaker 2: going to be a playfake, but who knows right what
- 43:18Speaker 2: it was actually going to be. He didn't really play
- 43:20Speaker 2: a ton from under center. I thought this shotgun stuff
- 43:23Speaker 2: that he was doing was pretty much what they've been
- 43:25Speaker 2: doing in practice. But the question that I have for
- 43:28Speaker 2: Van Pelt tomorrow, which I think is a big part
- 43:30Speaker 2: of this whole discussion, is do they need Drake May
- 43:35Speaker 2: to be able to handle the entirety of the playbook,
- 43:38Speaker 2: which means playing from under center, Yeah, is the biggest
- 43:41Speaker 2: one in order for them to feel like he's ready
- 43:43Speaker 2: to play in a game. Or would they go into
- 43:46Speaker 2: a game like a game script that they had against
- 43:48Speaker 2: the Eagles in the preseason where he is playing in
- 43:53Speaker 2: the gun for the majority of the game and they're
- 43:55Speaker 2: cool with that.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Do you think there's any chance they'd mix in some pistol.
- 44:00Speaker 2: This is I'm so glad you brought this up. See
- 44:02Speaker 2: this is how we you know, this is why we
- 44:03Speaker 2: do the show together. Uh. That's a really good point.
- 44:07Speaker 2: And when you read about some other offenses around the league,
- 44:12Speaker 2: first of all, should mention Drake may have played out
- 44:14Speaker 2: of the pistol a ton in North Carolina. Yeah, that
- 44:16Speaker 2: was a big part of their offense.
- 44:18Speaker 1: And I remember you saying at the draft or before
- 44:20Speaker 1: just after, at some point you made the point that
- 44:24Speaker 1: he would it would be a little easier for him
- 44:26Speaker 1: to get used to working under center than most of
- 44:28Speaker 1: these shotguns specific quarterbacks, because he had worked in the pistol,
- 44:31Speaker 1: so some of those play action mechanics were there's a
- 44:35Speaker 1: lot of carry over there exactly.
- 44:37Speaker 2: So in the pistol. The biggest thing about being under center. Yeah,
- 44:41Speaker 2: obviously the playfake is it's harder to read as the
- 44:44Speaker 2: defense right, it's a lot more effective quarterback turns us
- 44:47Speaker 2: back to the to the play line of scrimmage, he
- 44:49Speaker 2: puts the ball out. All that kind of stuff makes
- 44:51Speaker 2: it easier to sell the play fake. The other thing
- 44:55Speaker 2: that is big with with the being under center in
- 44:58Speaker 2: the run game is that the running back can go
- 45:00Speaker 2: either way right, right, because he's standing behind the quarterback.
- 45:04Speaker 2: So now he has the ability you can run it
- 45:06Speaker 2: left or you can run it right, and you don't
- 45:08Speaker 2: when gunn you don't necessarily have that advantage because the
- 45:11Speaker 2: back is offset. So now like it's a little bit
- 45:14Speaker 2: different for him to run to the same side that
- 45:15Speaker 2: he's lined up as. So that's the big advantage of
- 45:18Speaker 2: being under center is that the running back can go
- 45:20Speaker 2: either direction and then the playfakes are better. So a
- 45:23Speaker 2: lot of these quarterbacks, you know, a lot of these
- 45:26Speaker 2: coaches in the modern game, what they've done with these
- 45:30Speaker 2: quarterbacks that don't like being under center. And I'll give
- 45:32Speaker 2: you an example. Tua does not like being under center,
- 45:36Speaker 2: doesn't like it, hatesa So the Shanahan offense that Mike
- 45:40Speaker 2: McDaniel's running in Miami, that is a heavy under center operation.
- 45:45Speaker 2: So what Channon or what McDaniel's done to build this
- 45:48Speaker 2: around Tua is that they've adopted the pistol. So now
- 45:52Speaker 2: with the pistol, the running backs behind the quarterback and
- 45:56Speaker 2: the gun so you still have that ability for the
- 45:58Speaker 2: running back to go either direction.
- 46:00Speaker 7: Right.
- 46:00Speaker 2: The other thing that you have is that what Tua
- 46:02Speaker 2: will do is he'll still turn his back to the
- 46:05Speaker 2: defense on a play action fake. So now you're getting
- 46:08Speaker 2: that same play action and you can actually bootleg out
- 46:11Speaker 2: of the pistol as well and get the same exact
- 46:15Speaker 2: action that you're looking for from under center. You can
- 46:18Speaker 2: get it in the pistol. So my I wonder if
- 46:22Speaker 2: that is the compromise for Alex van Pelt, because, let's
- 46:25Speaker 2: face it, the stuff from under center from Drake May
- 46:27Speaker 2: has been bumpy at times, not so much about the
- 46:30Speaker 2: reads and getting the ball out once he gets up
- 46:32Speaker 2: and down field, he's fumbling the snaps.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Right, it's getting that.
- 46:35Speaker 2: It's literally getting out from underneath center. That's an issue
- 46:39Speaker 2: right now.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Well, but this also goes back to my point. I
- 46:41Speaker 1: really wish they'd let him work more with David Andrews
- 46:43Speaker 1: because he's working with Nick Levertt is really a guard
- 46:47Speaker 1: who's moving the center. Antonio Maffi's really guard who's moving
- 46:49Speaker 1: the center and struggling, and who else he worked with
- 46:52Speaker 1: Liam Fourneels a converting Yeah, Levert's a converted guard, Mafi's
- 46:58Speaker 1: a converted guard.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Forin Dell's a converted tackle. I'd still understand that one
- 47:02Speaker 1: tackle the guard to right, and then Charles Turner's at
- 47:06Speaker 1: UDFA who they clearly don't see as a as a
- 47:09Speaker 1: legitimate option. So I don't know. Maybe I'd like to
- 47:12Speaker 1: see him under center, with a real center and maybe
- 47:15Speaker 1: some of that clears up, but we didn't see it so.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Right, So I love the idea of the pistol that
- 47:23Speaker 2: to me seems like a perfect compromise to negate the
- 47:27Speaker 2: issues that they're having with Drake may playing from under center,
- 47:30Speaker 2: but also still running some of the traditional early down
- 47:33Speaker 2: concepts that Van Pelt wants to get to. You can
- 47:36Speaker 2: still run all the post crosses, the bootlegs, hank concepts like,
- 47:40Speaker 2: you can still run all of that stuff from the pistol,
- 47:42Speaker 2: and it's basically the same as running it from under
- 47:44Speaker 2: center without him having to worry about the footwork and
- 47:47Speaker 2: the snaps and all that kind of stuff. Love that compromise.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Glad you brought it up too. Was the real poster
- 47:55Speaker 2: child for this, Yeah, because you know McDaniel. I don't
- 47:59Speaker 2: know if he was the first guy to do this,
- 48:01Speaker 2: but McDaniel kind of was in a revolution of having
- 48:06Speaker 2: quarterbacks turn their back to the line of scrimmage out
- 48:08Speaker 2: of the pistol, like that that whole action of turning
- 48:10Speaker 2: your back to the line, showing the ball fake like,
- 48:13Speaker 2: doing all those mechanics from the pistol was something that
- 48:16Speaker 2: McDaniel kind of brought to the league a little bit
- 48:19Speaker 2: and is obviously all over the college game. The other
- 48:22Speaker 2: quarterback I just give you an example with is Matthew
- 48:24Speaker 2: Stafford also hates being under center, so that RAMS offense
- 48:28Speaker 2: is still in that tree of Shanahan whatever, and he
- 48:32Speaker 2: hates being under center. So they've adopted the entire offense
- 48:35Speaker 2: to be more from the gun, and that's they've thrived
- 48:39Speaker 2: when he's been healthy in that regard. So I think
- 48:41Speaker 2: there's ways to kind of pivot out of this. The
- 48:44Speaker 2: question that I have for Van Pelt is are you
- 48:46Speaker 2: willing to pivot right?
- 48:48Speaker 3: Like?
- 48:49Speaker 2: Is that something you're willing to do or are you
- 48:52Speaker 2: looking at it more like we need Drake May to
- 48:54Speaker 2: master being under center so that we can play him
- 48:56Speaker 2: under center. It's gonna be an interesting question. All right,
- 48:58Speaker 2: Let's take this last call well from Brian and Baltimore.
- 49:01Speaker 2: What's up?
- 49:01Speaker 7: Brian, Hey, buddy, A big fan of the show. I
- 49:07Speaker 7: was just calling man because I feel like one of
- 49:09Speaker 7: the under the radar things and I know you guys
- 49:10Speaker 7: have talked about that little bit is man, after watching
- 49:13Speaker 7: that preseason game last week, man, backup center, Like, like,
- 49:17Speaker 7: what are we doing there? Because I knew it was
- 49:19Speaker 7: a few years ago that David Andrews got hurt and
- 49:22Speaker 7: we kind of had a backup playing with Connor mcdermack
- 49:24Speaker 7: and things like that, but man, backup center. Man, it
- 49:27Speaker 7: makes me nervous after seeing those snaps last week that
- 49:30Speaker 7: were low and like, I mean, god forbid David Andrews
- 49:34Speaker 7: don't get hurt. But what do you see is doing
- 49:36Speaker 7: about that? I still see some guys out there that's
- 49:39Speaker 7: still free agents that'd be pretty good, maybe like bringing
- 49:41Speaker 7: them in as veterans like Qusenbury or McGovern But yeah,
- 49:46Speaker 7: I just really wanted to know what you guys think
- 49:47Speaker 7: we should do about that, because I know that's an
- 49:49Speaker 7: issue as well under the radar.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a fair question, Brian, thanks for the call.
- 49:54Speaker 2: That is actually one thing you might be able to
- 49:56Speaker 2: get on waivers. Yeah, a backup center, up interior alignment
- 50:01Speaker 2: is something that you might actually be able to get
- 50:03Speaker 2: on waivers. I'm not overly concerned about Nick Levertt being
- 50:07Speaker 2: the guy. He's been fine, he's hurting, Yeah, he's been
- 50:09Speaker 2: fine in terms of blocking. Obviously they have to work
- 50:13Speaker 2: out some of the things with the issues with the
- 50:15Speaker 2: snaps because he hasn't snapped a whole lot, right, and
- 50:18Speaker 2: so that that's where that's probably coming from. But just
- 50:20Speaker 2: in general, I feel like as a blocker, he's held
- 50:23Speaker 2: his own as an interior guy. So I wouldn't be
- 50:25Speaker 2: overly concerned if Andrews were to get hurt if Nick
- 50:29Speaker 2: Clevertt was the guy that they turned to, and maybe
- 50:32Speaker 2: they can do some stuff like again not not playing
- 50:34Speaker 2: from under center a bunch to try to negate some
- 50:38Speaker 2: of the things that they would have with that. But
- 50:39Speaker 2: it's something that is on the radar. Jake Andrews gets
- 50:42Speaker 2: hurt that that's obviously who was probably in line to
- 50:45Speaker 2: be the backup center you mentioned Charles Turner hasn't really
- 50:49Speaker 2: emerged as a UDFA.
- 50:50Speaker 1: I was hoping that didn't sound super excited abut him
- 50:53Speaker 1: when he's asked about him.
- 50:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope. I was hoping that that Charles Turner
- 50:55Speaker 2: was gonna have a better summer than what he's had.
- 50:58Speaker 2: So it's a goner. But I also think that one
- 51:02Speaker 2: just one quick thing on the backup center, that's the
- 51:06Speaker 2: least of their worries.
- 51:07Speaker 1: Right now on the alternative stat Yeah, they.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Don't have a tackle, a left tackle right now that
- 51:11Speaker 2: they feel great about. Uh, there's so many other.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Holes right great about. Yeah, there's so many other holes
- 51:17Speaker 1: on the in.
- 51:18Speaker 2: The first string offense right now to that to be
- 51:21Speaker 2: worried about the twoses a little bit, But I agreed
- 51:24Speaker 2: that it is like a low key, sneaky need. All right,
- 51:28Speaker 2: let's do three up, three down. But before we do,
- 51:31Speaker 2: preseason is upon us, and Bob's Discount Furniture is going
- 51:34Speaker 2: ahead head to head with the competition. Dare to compare
- 51:37Speaker 2: Bob's unbeatable lineup of on trend, high quality furniture for
- 51:40Speaker 2: every room from game day seating to halftime snacks setups
- 51:44Speaker 2: that costs one hundreds, even thousands less than the competition.
- 51:48Speaker 2: See how much you can say when you dare to
- 51:49Speaker 2: compare with Bob's Discount Furniture the official furniture store of
- 51:53Speaker 2: the New England Patriots. All right, let's start with the
- 51:55Speaker 2: ups because we're a positive.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Real quick, because I I the Eagles released cj Uzama.
- 52:01Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, he's with the Bengals, right.
- 52:04Speaker 1: He's with the Bengals. A couple of years ago. He
- 52:06Speaker 1: was with the Jets the last two years and struggled.
- 52:08Speaker 1: But I mean, who is throwing him the football? The
- 52:11Speaker 1: last year he had competent quarterback, playing twenty twenty one,
- 52:13Speaker 1: he caught forty nine passes for four hundred and ninety
- 52:15Speaker 1: three yards and five touchdowns. He is now thirty one,
- 52:19Speaker 1: and he did just get cut before roster cuts. They
- 52:22Speaker 1: need tight ends, they need tight ends. He'd be at
- 52:24Speaker 1: least worth a call, at least worth a workout in
- 52:26Speaker 1: my mind.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Big dude, like big blocker. Right, he's like two hundred
- 52:30Speaker 2: and seventy pounds.
- 52:31Speaker 1: I want to say, is yeah, six seventy one.
- 52:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a big guy.
- 52:35Speaker 1: You just bring him. Who remember they had Algie Crumpler
- 52:37Speaker 1: here late in his career. I think he was playing
- 52:39Speaker 1: at like two to eighty yeah, and they just had
- 52:41Speaker 1: him here to block. Yeah, could do something like that.
- 52:44Speaker 2: All right, three upgree down. Let's start with the ups
- 52:46Speaker 2: because we're we're I want to be positive today too
- 52:49Speaker 2: negative last week? Who didn't like it? So let's go
- 52:52Speaker 2: a little positive here to start? Do you want to start?
- 52:54Speaker 2: You start? I always start, So you start?
- 52:56Speaker 1: Sure? Taekwon Thornton, And I'll tell you why.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Look at how the tables are well, but listen, I'll
- 53:03Speaker 2: give the take.
- 53:03Speaker 1: You're right, it's not anything he's done, but that's the
- 53:07Speaker 1: performance wise.
- 53:07Speaker 2: That's not fair.
- 53:08Speaker 1: It's really not it's the way they're using them. He
- 53:12Speaker 1: gets the veteran treatment in the preseason game, he's working
- 53:15Speaker 1: exclusively at the starters in practice. He's gonna make the team.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he's gonna make the team. And that makes
- 53:21Speaker 1: me nervous because if they're really planning on him having
- 53:25Speaker 1: a big role in the offense, that means he needs
- 53:28Speaker 1: to be out there and he can't count on that
- 53:30Speaker 1: with him. But if I'm Taekwon Thornton, I'm feeling pretty
- 53:33Speaker 1: good right now because I know I have a spot
- 53:34Speaker 1: on this football team.
- 53:35Speaker 2: So the big thing for me with Taekwon and you
- 53:38Speaker 2: say he's not he had to go ball against Christian
- 53:40Speaker 2: Zales in practice the other Okay, so he had. He's
- 53:43Speaker 2: had some flashes in practice. Let's put it to you
- 53:46Speaker 2: that way. And I do feel like he's the added weight,
- 53:49Speaker 2: Like he looks like he just looks sturdier out there
- 53:51Speaker 2: to me, like he's not as easily derailed doing his round.
- 53:56Speaker 1: Here's why I'm talking yourself into Taekwon Thornton.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Of course, you know, you know this is like a
- 54:00Speaker 2: summer tradition. Of course I'm talking you weren't gonna do
- 54:02Speaker 2: it this year. Okay. But here's the thing about Taekwon,
- 54:05Speaker 2: and I've been saying this for a while about him,
- 54:07Speaker 2: so I'm repeating myself a little bit. But the biggest
- 54:10Speaker 2: thing to me with Taekwon is that this offense needs
- 54:14Speaker 2: a player like Taekwon Thoring on the team. They need
- 54:17Speaker 2: an outside X receiver that can get down the field.
- 54:21Speaker 2: It just the offense needs it, otherwise it's going to
- 54:23Speaker 2: be exactly what we've watched the last couple of years,
- 54:26Speaker 2: where everything is a three yard pass, right Like, they
- 54:29Speaker 2: need somebody, even if it's just as a decoy that
- 54:34Speaker 2: the post safety has to respect over the top, or
- 54:37Speaker 2: when he does get the occasional one on one matchup,
- 54:40Speaker 2: you can throw the go ball to him down the
- 54:41Speaker 2: sideline like he did in practice the other day against Gonzo.
- 54:45Speaker 2: They they need to be able to have that element
- 54:47Speaker 2: of the offense, someone that clears out coverage, someone that
- 54:50Speaker 2: takes occupies safeties down the field, takes the top off
- 54:53Speaker 2: the defense and once a game, can you give me
- 54:57Speaker 2: one good go you know, vertical route one. It's a
- 55:00Speaker 2: game against one single coverage like that's all I'm asking for.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I'm not asking for him to be Tyreek Hill and
- 55:05Speaker 2: you know, win eight times like that. But if you
- 55:07Speaker 2: can win one time, if he's one for forty and
- 55:11Speaker 2: he's doing his job in terms of the structure of
- 55:14Speaker 2: the offense, then to me, that's a win. And until
- 55:18Speaker 2: Javon Baker gets to the point where he can play
- 55:21Speaker 2: the full time X role, which he's not very close
- 55:24Speaker 2: to you right now, I don't think Taekwon Thorton is
- 55:26Speaker 2: the best player on the team for that. He's just
- 55:28Speaker 2: the best receiver on the roster that does that. And
- 55:31Speaker 2: it's more about usage in skill set than it is
- 55:36Speaker 2: about anything that he's demonstratively better than at that he
- 55:41Speaker 2: has been the last two years. Right, it's just the
- 55:44Speaker 2: way they're using him within the framework of the offense
- 55:47Speaker 2: that gives me a little bit of hope. So, yeah,
- 55:49Speaker 2: I'm glad you did Taekwon because I'm not doing Taekwon.
- 55:52Speaker 2: I told you I wouldn't do it.
- 55:54Speaker 1: Yeah, And then you proceed proceeded to explain why you're
- 55:57Speaker 1: hiring him than I am.
- 55:58Speaker 2: You know I can always talk myself from the right.
- 56:00Speaker 1: So you didn't have him on your list.
- 56:01Speaker 2: I did not because I told you I wouldn't be
- 56:04Speaker 2: duped again. That's why number one up to me still
- 56:07Speaker 2: is Drake May. We don't have to go long on it.
- 56:10Speaker 1: But the one center that won't be available. Speaking of
- 56:13Speaker 1: guys you were high on, Yeah, Yell defro Holt just
- 56:16Speaker 1: got a multi year contract extension with the Arizona Cardinals.
- 56:19Speaker 2: That one stings because yelled defro Hole was a good
- 56:21Speaker 2: I thought he was.
- 56:22Speaker 1: I could use Yell for Hole.
- 56:23Speaker 2: He was a good prospect. Yeah, I felt like he
- 56:26Speaker 2: had a chance to make it in the league. They
- 56:28Speaker 2: gave up on him too easily or too quickly. I
- 56:30Speaker 2: should say I don't want to go super long on
- 56:32Speaker 2: Drake May because we spent the first thirty five minutes
- 56:34Speaker 2: of the show talking about it. But from the Eagles
- 56:38Speaker 2: Thursday night preseason game on, he's just been a different
- 56:42Speaker 2: guy to me, more confident, more decisive. He's coming on.
- 56:46Speaker 2: He's making progress. He deserves credit for that, They deserve
- 56:49Speaker 2: credit for that. I'm excited by what I've seen from
- 56:52Speaker 2: Drake May. But you guys know that already, So who's
- 56:54Speaker 2: your number two up?
- 56:56Speaker 1: I had Drake May too, so I guess let me,
- 56:59Speaker 1: I'll give you my third and I'll of another one
- 57:00Speaker 1: so we don't have overlap. Joshua Bloodsoe nice. I thought
- 57:04Speaker 1: he was really good in the game. Yeah, specifically as
- 57:07Speaker 1: a pass rusher, which was weird. And not that I'm
- 57:10Speaker 1: saying he's going to solve all their pass rush issues,
- 57:12Speaker 1: but they're gonna need it from somewhere, and if he
- 57:15Speaker 1: can help as a blitzer, it's not exactly hurting his case, right.
- 57:19Speaker 1: I thought he's really good in the game. I thought
- 57:21Speaker 1: he had a couple of solid practices the last few
- 57:23Speaker 1: days too. Nothing overly flashy, but a guy that's managed
- 57:27Speaker 1: to stick around, and you're kind of seeing why right now.
- 57:28Speaker 1: He's just the little banged up at safety or in
- 57:31Speaker 1: the secondary. He's getting some more reps. He's doing some
- 57:34Speaker 1: things that maybe hasn't done in the past that they're
- 57:35Speaker 1: clearly asking him to do out of need, and he's
- 57:37Speaker 1: doing them. And that's the kind of guy that usually
- 57:39Speaker 1: hangs around again. So good quiet, but good week for
- 57:42Speaker 1: josh Bledsoe.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Jalen Hawkins is dron Harmon. He's that center fielder. But
- 57:47Speaker 2: if Marte Mapho's not going to be a factor on
- 57:50Speaker 2: this team this year, she's not at least a start.
- 57:52Speaker 2: The most like body type is obviously josh But.
- 57:56Speaker 1: So they have those two. They changed the rule this year.
- 58:00Speaker 1: You can put two guys on IR before roster cuts
- 58:02Speaker 1: that can come back, but the rule is you can't
- 58:05Speaker 1: put them on IR until cutdown day, So like Jake
- 58:08Speaker 1: Andrews doesn't apply, and you have to designate them that day.
- 58:11Speaker 1: You can't put like five guys on IR that day
- 58:14Speaker 1: and say all right, we'll pick two later. You have
- 58:16Speaker 1: to choose to that day. Marte mop who, Christian Barmore.
- 58:19Speaker 1: It's got to be it, right pending another injury.
- 58:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree. The only way it's not Barmar
- 58:25Speaker 2: is if the doctors say it's it's not.
- 58:28Speaker 1: And even then they don't really have it unless Hunter
- 58:30Speaker 1: Henry's injury is worse than we think. Yeah, they don't
- 58:32Speaker 1: really have a clear second option, and you might as
- 58:35Speaker 1: well at that point, right, you know you're not gonna
- 58:37Speaker 1: you can't bank it.
- 58:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 58:39Speaker 1: So yeah, but Joshua Bledsoe uh, solid week for him,
- 58:43Speaker 1: So that's my uh okay, that's my second.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Number two up for me is a both rookie offensive
- 58:49Speaker 2: lineman Kaden Wallace and Laden Robinson. Caden Wallace, I'm still
- 58:53Speaker 2: you feel like he's got a little bit of ways
- 58:55Speaker 2: to go with his technique, you know, hand placement, things
- 58:58Speaker 2: like that that we've talked about in the past. With it,
- 59:00Speaker 2: he's still a little bit wide with his hand carriage
- 59:03Speaker 2: and he's get letting rushers into his frame a little
- 59:05Speaker 2: bit too much, which causes you know, issues with anchoring
- 59:09Speaker 2: and sustaining blocks and things like that. But he's making
- 59:14Speaker 2: progress and should be pushing right tackle here very soon.
- 59:18Speaker 2: I would say he he should be pushing Chukes the
- 59:22Speaker 2: cor four early in the season for right tackle, which
- 59:25Speaker 2: is a good development.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:26Speaker 2: I don't know if he's gonna be a stud or
- 59:30Speaker 2: anything like that, but if he's better than what you
- 59:32Speaker 2: have and he's a young player on the rise, that's
- 59:35Speaker 2: that's the type of thing that you want. Landen Robinson
- 59:37Speaker 2: was absolutely outstanding in the game against the Eagles. Now,
- 59:41Speaker 2: it was against a lot of backups, I'll give you know,
- 59:43Speaker 2: I'll put that out there, put that context in there.
- 59:46Speaker 2: It's the third and fourth quarter of a preseason game,
- 59:48Speaker 2: so it's against like you know, third stringers and practice
- 59:51Speaker 2: squad guys, but he was dominant at times. Like he
- 59:54Speaker 2: took a blitzer. They sent a blitz at him, he
- 59:56Speaker 2: came off a double took it a blitzer and threw
- 59:58Speaker 2: him into the ground like you know, like just rag
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: dolling guys. He's a physical guy. He's light on his feet,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: he's got a good sense of the game and a
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: good sense of where his eyes should be and things
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: like that. Really really excited about Leyden Robinson. The problem
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: with Layden Robinson is is it's another guard. Like if
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: he was a tackle, I'd be like, oh, this is amazing, right,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: but unfortunately he's not a tackle. So when you start
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: to factor in your best five and try to figure
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: out who your best five are, it's kind of hard
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: to take City So and Mike on. You're not taking
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Mike a winning.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Off right field, so that's a part of the problem.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: The only way to really do it to get him
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: in is on attacks win at tackle, but then you
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: don't have Wallace, so it's really the only way you're
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: getting both rookies on or either to play Wallace at left,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: which I don't love Yeah, or take City so out
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: of the lineup, which is probably the better option. But
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: he's a solid player. Yeah, and that's not the guy
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: you're trying to replace. And now you're moving Michael and
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: went into a position where he's not as good. Just
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: to wedge the rookies in.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: There's there are five best guys. Three of them are guards.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: That doesn't work. So when you and Robinson are in
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: their top five linemen on the roster, yeah, and all
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: three of them are guards, you could play all three.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: You could already four their top five hour guards. And
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: one's the center honestly.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Yeah, right, I mean one's a center too, so if
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: you want to put it that way too with David Andrews,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: So it stinks that he is not a tackle, but
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: it doesn't stink that he's good. Like is trending in
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: the right direction.
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Because people are somebody's gonna say it in the comments.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Don't just wedge him into tackle, just try him left tackle.
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: No, he's not a tackle. And Mike on who with
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty pounds is not a tackle either, correct.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: So that's my second one. Do you have another one?
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Yeah? Jaheen Bell just I thought has made the most
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: of the opportunity with the tight ends out. I don't
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: know what it turns into. I still think he's probably
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a guy that starts on the practice squad and maybe
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: gets out of to the roster later down the road.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: But he's had He was definitely playing catch up after
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: he missed that first week, and I think now he's
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: he's caught up.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Yep. I think he's one of those guys that they're
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: gonna have to decide whether they're going to prioritize receiving
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: upside over blocking. And when I say blocking, Mitchell Wilcox
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: is the blocker right And to me, this is a
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: team that needs to prioritize the upside right now. So
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: I would go jappine belp just because they're debute to playmakers.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: They need to find playmakers and if he's a guy
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: that can be a playmaker. His little spree in the
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: red zone the other day with the three touchdowns and
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: like a ten play span or whatever it was, that
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: was exciting to me because a lot of those things
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: were the things I thought he would be good at
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: in the NFL. You're running into the flats and just
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: winning foot races, down on the goal line, and one
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: was a slide route from Joe Milton where he just
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: comes underneath the formation and slides out into the flat
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: and he just wins a foot race like just coming across.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: It's not right. He's getting to the top of the
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: route and he's not Hunter Henry right, He's not like
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: getting open on y option or something like that. He's
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: just running people at that size and that's encouraging.
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: All right, real quick before move on while we're talking
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: about pass catchers of questions in the comments, want to
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: know what you think about Matt Landers.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: Okay, we'll get to that in a second. Last one
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: here my last up, yep, coming around to it. Keon White,
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: all right, dot, Kean White was an animal in that
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: game against the Eagles the other night. It's so crystal
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: clear to me now and maybe it should have been before.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: But he's so much better as a hand in the
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: dirt interior rusher than he is as an outside russ Yeah.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I've been telling you this for months.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: And the comp that we've we've we've kicked this comp
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: around I think before Trey Flowers, like Trey Flowers is
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: the comp to me, he's a little bit more physical
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: than Trey Flowers, and Trey Flowers is a little bit
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: more elusive or like just flexible, wiggly, I would say,
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: but in terms of their usage and how exactly they're
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: going to play, he's very, very explosive and twitchy when
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: he plays on the inside and for some reason he
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: goes on the outside and he stands up and he's
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: just like this stiff guy. Now, I don't know what
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: it is, but on early downs if he's a strong
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: side outside linebacker setting the edge of the defense and
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: pressing the pocket, fine, and then on third down he's
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: now it's obviously not exactly the same. It's not apples
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: to apples, But for the time being, he's the one
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: on one guy that wins on the inside for you
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: on third down that Christian Barmore was for you last
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: year if you had to. He's not Matthew Judon. That's
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: not gonna be his game. They're gonna have to get
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: by with like Uce and Ziminez and those guys you know,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: coming off the edge. But when they get on into
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: third down in their pass rush packages, Keon White's gonna
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: put his hand in the dirt. He's gonna be over
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: the guard of the center and he's gonna just go
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: to town like it's just gonna be one on one
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: and yeah, go win, go go beat your block. And
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: he was very good in this game. Still think he
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: struggled a little bit with finding the ball. You know,
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: finding the quarterback in the pocket was more buwling a
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: china shop than it was, you know, in terms of
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: sack production. Still, but that's what they need. They need
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: a guy that's gonna get the quarterback off the spot
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: on the interior and they need to do Chay or
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: zem Andez or one of these other guys to emerge
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: as the finisher. And if that's what Kean White is,
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: then fine. I thought this was his best week of
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: practice and in best build up.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Glad he finally came around on that came around.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: See I can, I can be, I can when I'm
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: wrong and be flexible. All right, let's go to the doubts.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: Uh cover set number one. Just a rough couple of
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: weeks here now. And the accuracy the balls, that's the
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: big thing for me, the balls getting away from him spot.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: He's not putting the ball where he should be putting it.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: You know, he's had I'd still say his summer is
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: an overall positive when you take in the full body
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: of work. But football is what have you done for
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: me lately? Sport and the joint practice, which is the
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: biggest practice of the summer, and in the preseason game
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: where he played the most, he did not look good.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a fair assessment. I thought the tape against
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Carrier against the Eagles in the preseason game was brutal.
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: He missed multiple throws in.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: That game and the pick was I mean, Mayo gripped
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: him for it.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why I feel comfortable saying it was brutal
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: because they may have called it a terrible play. So
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: I don't really think I could say anything that was
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: worse than that. But a first third down of the game,
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: he has Austin Hooper on the corner route. It's it's
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: not a great ball. It's just not a great ball.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: It needs to be better there. The pick was was terrible.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Mayo is right. Not only I understand why he came
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: off the Taekwon Thornton read because they have sort of
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: like a red zones bracket. Yeah, so I get why
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: he came off that, why he didn't move on from
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Austin Hooper to Pop Douglas on the on the little
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: return route there, juke route. I'm not a one hundred
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: percent short. You have to ask him, but Pop Douglas
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: was was open for a walk in touchdown on that
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: you know that Ellman route right outside inside a type
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: of route, and uh, he just locked onto Hooper and
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: threw a bad ball also on that play, and maybe
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: maybe he doesn't have this quite in his back. He
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: could have ran it in, yeah, because man coverage or
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: and there's no there's nobody on the court, like he
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: could have just waltzed in.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: Throw it away. And look, I know it's Fort Town,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: but fourth and three from the twelve. As a veteran,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: talk Mayo, you should be able to talk Mayow to
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: let you go there.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Yeah, at least kick the field goal, right, you know,
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: you got to preserve points there. Some of his accuracy
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: issues that we were seeing in the game also came
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: up in practice as well. So that's a little bit alarming.
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: And uh, just the last thing, the last throw to
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: that he made to Pop Douglas over the middle of
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: the field in the game on last Thursday night, that
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: throw was dangerous too. Yeah, he was like you got
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: a guy hanging on him and he threw like whipped
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: it to Pop Douglas and it went off. Pop Douglas's
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: right hand wasn't catchable and popped up in the air
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: and there you know, that could have been a pick. Also,
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: So if he at the very least Jacobia Brissett needs
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: to be have good ball security and manage the game,
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: and he wasn't. He has not done that, and that's
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: got to improve. All right, who's your your second, because
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: we both had Jacob Bersett.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: My second was Javon Baker. Yeah, got to catch the ball.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: It's that simple. This is not a guy that's gonna
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: have a ton of opportunities. And I don't mean that
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: in the sense that like they're gonna bench him. I
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: just mean that in the way he plays the game,
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: his role in the offense. He's not gonna be a
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: high volume player. His job is to create, ideally two
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: or three big plays a game. And if he does that,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: if he has three catches, that's fine because you hope
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: that they amount to, you know, eighty ninety yards in
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: a score. When you get open over the top, you
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: have to catch the ball. That's why you're here. That's
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: the primary reason you're here, not being able to do that,
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: and he struggled to do it in practice as well.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I know I've said with him, you know he's going
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: to create explosive plays. There's gonna be drops. The good
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: comes with the bad. You live with it, and you
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: hope the drops don't come in big moments. That ratio
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: is not working in his favor right now.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: It's a good way of putting it. I want to
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: give my last one and then I want to circle
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: back to that because I have a bigger point to
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: make about the receivers. We have a we have to
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: have a tough conversation about the rookie receivers, right, people.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: Really want you to talk about Matt Landers.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: So Jesus, okay, uh, really quickly my last down, and
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: then I'll circle back to the receivers. Armon Watts.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: I was not making the team.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: I really was hoping that Armon Watts was going to
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: be a player for them. His table last year in
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Pittsburgh was good.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: Yeah, as a.
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: Pass rusher, I don't know what happened. He's not winning
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: any one on ones uh, And during practice he's not
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: He's playing into the fourth quarter of preseason games, like
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: this is a classic veteran surprise Mike Panell. Yeah that,
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: but he's a better rusher than Mike Panell, like Mike
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Pel's nose.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: No. No, but I'm saying, like Mike Panell was signed
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: defensive lineman. I remember people getting mad at me. I
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: left him off for roster projection. Yeah, people got mad
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: at me, and I'm like, he's not gonna make the team. No,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: I think he just some of it too, like he
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: got laft. Jeremiah Farms has been excellent this summer. Tristan
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Hill has had a very solid summer. And I would
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: also say a Qualle Daniel, well, he was Quali was
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: always ahead of him to me in the depth chart,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: but coming in you think he's kind of that third
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: guy to Daniel Laqualley in Barmore and then obviously you
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: lose bar More. But I had him ahead if I
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: to do with depth chart, I had n't head of
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: Farms in Hill, and they've both been better than him. Sorry,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: and credit to those guys. That's not saying like he's
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: been terrible, and it's by default both of those guys,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: especially Farms, excellent, But he just he got outplayed and
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: got outplayed by other players on the roster.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Just a little surprised, especially when Barmar got injured or
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: blood clots, whatever health issues. There was there was a
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: clear path for armand Watts already, and then at that
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: point there was like a really clear path for Arman
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Watts to make this team. And like I said, he
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: had really good film in Pittsburgh last year. Yeah, and
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: I was really surprised that it just hasn't been there
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: at all.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: For him this week. Look at Mike Panell, he stuck
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: around and he's been in the league. What year is that,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: probably nineteen Yeah, and he's been in the league since
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: and he's been a starter on some good teams in
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Kansas City.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Nineteen twenty twenty somewhere around there.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Well, Cony Eelie, I think flamed out. But like bad
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: summer can change a lot for you.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: Okay, let's circle back to the rookie receivers and I'll finish.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: Give my third Oh Marcellus Dial, Now do I still
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: think he can be a player in this league? Yes? Absolutely?
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: And another guy where I think the body of work
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: this summer is overall good. A really rough preseason game
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: he had a really rough time to joint practices that
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: to me is a guy. We talked about it with
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: the waivers earlier. I think in clear waivers, you get
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: him to the practice squad, you continue to work on
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: his game, and I wonder if maybe they should try
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: him at safety a little bit because good open field tackler,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: good covering space, played kicking game as well, and you
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: revisit him a little bit. I also kind of, like
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: we just talked about with Watts, Marco Wilson's been playing well,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: Isaiah Bolden is playing while he's playing on the slot
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: more now, which is really important. Whom I'm missing from
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: that group Sean Waves, Yeah, Sean Way, Alex Austin. Yeah,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: So like I just think Dial got he got passed,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: he got laughed by some other guys that that have
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: just been playing better at the position.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Yeah. I would have him off the roster right now.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: And I am it's like probably my fifty fourth fifty.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: Yeah, and that nice practice squad potential there. Yep, you
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: know a developmental guy. Okay, let's let's let's have a
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: tough conversation about the rookie receivers. Yeah, so the Baker
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: stuff is more obvious because of the targets. You know,
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: he's yeah, got three of eight targets, and we also
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: can see it on the downfield targets that you know,
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: they haven't been great in terms of his involvement on
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: those plays. But the film from the first two weeks
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: for both these guys of the preseason hasn't been great.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: And I'm talking about Jalen Polk also. With Jalen Polk,
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: let's start with him there. Yeah, there are still my
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: big thing with Jalen Polk, and you know I've been
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: struggling with Jalen Polk. Yeah, my big thing with him
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: is that he's going to have to be an expert outrunner.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: You know, Steve Smith likes to say you have a
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: PhD and rout running. He's going to have to be
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: an absolute technician at this level because he doesn't have
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: the physical gifts to just win on raw talent. So
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: he's going to have to understand everything from concepts to leverage,
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: to how to stem, how you know, how to release,
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: like all of the little details of running routes. Jalen
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Polk's going to have to be a masterclass at that.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: And the concern that I have with him on film,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: is that every these first two games there's two or
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: three times where there's some clear mental errors where I'm
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: just not a hundred percent sure he knows what he's doing.
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: And I'm not like trying to be an ass. It's
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: just like he's a rookie, right and there still looks
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: a little loss at there. I'll give you an example
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: that I mentioned the throat Mitchell Wilcox in the flat earlier,
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: So that's Manton man coverage and Jalen Polk for some
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: reason runs into the same flat that Mitchell Wilcox runs into,
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: and the guy that actually tackles Mitchell Wilcox is Jalen
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: Polk's man. Jalen Polk's man comes off of Jalen Pole
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: and makes the tackle on Mitchell Wilcox. If Jalen Polk
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: isn't in that area, there's nobody over there, Like Mitchell
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: Wilcox is still running right like, because there's just his
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: man must have gotten lost in the wash of the
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: playfake or whatever, yeah, and there's nobody over there to
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: cover him. The guy that actually makes it not an
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: explosive play is Jalen Polk's guy. Because I think Jalen
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: Polk ran the wrong route right right, so that those
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: things are happening. The other thing that happened in the
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: game was the sack in the third quarter of Drake May.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: That play from snap to time to sack took four
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: point two seconds too long. You can't hold the ball
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: for that long. In the NFL. Some of that's on Drake,
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: like he's got to take a check down r right,
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: He's got to get the ball out. But it's a
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: dagger concept. So the inside receiver is running a vertical route,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: the outside receiver is running that deep in cut at
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: the sticks, and Jalen Polk's the inside receiver. He gets
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: chucked at the line of scrimmage, you know, gets chipped
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: to the line of scrimmage, and he never really gets
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: back on the tracks. He just kind of jogs up
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: the field and he kind of does this like squiggly
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: lined thing, and it's just not a good enough clear
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: out route. And so the safety it's it's quarter quarter
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: a half, it's cover six. The safety is just like
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: sitting on the dig because Jalen Polk doesn't clear out
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: the picture. So he's just like sitting there waiting for
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: Drake may like you're gonna throw it right through it,
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: and Jalen and and Drake Mays in the pocket and
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: he's waiting for Jalen Polk to run through the coverage
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: so that he can throw the dig route. And Jalen
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: Pulk never threatens the safety. It just never works. And
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: that speaks to me to more of like the deep
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: speed and the long speed to be able to run
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: those types of routes. So Jalen Polk will be a
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: fine receiver, but they're really to me, going to have
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: to manage the rap tree with it. Like he's gonna
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: have to just live at the first and second level
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: the defense. He's gotta be running in cuts and crossers
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: and you know, just little things you know underneath the defense, hitches,
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: things like that. The third level is not there to me.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: And if he's gonna get to being a really good
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: receiver in this league, he's gonna have to be mentally
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: sharper than he's been. So I haven't loved what I've
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: seen from him. I'm not completely out, I just haven't
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: loved it. They seem like they're a little bit more
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: bullish on it than I am. Because he's been elevated
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: up the depth chart, it seems like in recent days.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: So maybe I'm being too hard on him, but I
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: just there's a lot of things with the film that
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: I'm just a little bit concerned about. That's Jalen Polk.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: I don't know what your thoughts on him. I'll give
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: the Javon Baker take, but well, I'm just curious to
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: what you're seeing.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: What I would flip a lot of what you said
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: about Drake may Or earlier on to that that mental
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: stuff's teachable, That mental stuff's coachable. Now, I wouldn't have
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: him running a ton of vertical routes. I would rather
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: have him be the d cut on the dig than
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: the vertical.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Yeah like that.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: So that speaks to a usage thing, and maybe when
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: the regular season starts, that's what he's doing. But I
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: think that you know he's gonna be He's not gonna
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: be this big play threat, this dominant. He's going to
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: have to win in the short and intermediate and that
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: just comes, like you said, with reading a defense and
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: understanding route running. That stuff that can be taught. He's
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: never going to be an overly explosive athlete. But that's
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: the guy they picked like they if that comes as
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: a surprise to them, that that speaks to a deeper problem.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: I just I've used the Jacoby Myers comp a million times.
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna continue to use it. He's just got to
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: learn how to get open at the sticks, find a
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: hole in the coverage, sit down, and catch the football.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: That's what he's got to do. If they're using him
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: for more than that, that's on them.
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good way of putting it. And I
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: still see the Jacoby Meyers arc there. Yeah, it just
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: to me. It's like with Jacoby, but he was an
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: undrafted guy. It's not gonna come right away.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: Well, Jacoby was also only in his third year of
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: playing receiver, right right, he was a converted quarterback, so
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: let's separate that. But yeah, it's it's gonna be a
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: learning process for Polk in this role because at Washington
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: the game plan was pretty much run straight, doesn't matter
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: if your open or not. Michael Pennock will put the.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Ball in your hands.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's what he did. Now he's got to
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: learn to play the game a little differently. It is
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: gonna be a developing thing, but I still think he
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: can be a player, he's just not gonna be I
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: think some people look at second round receivers and they
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: see Devonte Adams, they see DK metcalf right, thank you, guys, like,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: that's not Age Brown's first round pick.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: The second round pick.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: Oh, that's right, he was that he was traded for
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: first round pick. That's that's not the kind of guy
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: Jalen Polk is. If that's the guy they wanted, they
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: should have drafted somebody else. You can have that argument.
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: I don't know that that guy was there for them
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: at that point with the run on receivers at least
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: not probably not not that you would be comfortable taking there.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I mean again, we're talking about now a guy like
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: Jayvon Baker, who you're hoping is just kind of a
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: big play threat. But that's uh yeah, I just it's
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: he's just gonna have to learn to read a defense
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: and find space because he say he's not necessarily gonna
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: win physically.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's tough with him because he's he's gonna
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: have to be mentally extremely sharp and he's gonna have
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: to be a really advanced route runner to be a
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: high volume, high productive for the.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Record, I think he can do that. Everything you hear
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: about this guy loves football film rat like, Yeah, just
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: wants to understand the game better and is willing to
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: put in the hours to do so. He is to
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: do it.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it just that to me, that whole thing is
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: gonna take time, and I just wonder he's probably gonna
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: be in the top three until Kenrick Bourne is healthy.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: But yeah, my big I guess, my big picture take
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: with all both these guys is that I don't want
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: fans to be surprised if they play a little bit
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: less than you want them to.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: Polk I think will play a little bit more, yeah
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: than Baker certainly, But with where things stand right now
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: with Javon Baker, there's a chance that Javon Baker is
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: like a healthy scratch week one. If he doesn't start
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: to turn it around a little bit, that that is
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: not going to be popular. It's a similar thing, but
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: maybe even worse because he's a higher draft pick than
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: like Kaishan Bouti not getting on the field, right, you know,
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: it's gonna be like that where there's this guy that's
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: got a lot of talent and he's got a lot
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: of ability, but he just isn't quite there yet as
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: a football player for him to play in an NFL game.
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: And and that's where I'm at with Javon Baker. Two
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: big things with Javon Baker just in terms of the details. One,
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: his route releases from the outside need to get better.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: He can't. He's not winning early enough in the route,
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: you know, so like he's getting pushed into the sideline,
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: or he's he's getting you know, stuck to press man
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: coverage and there's at no point in the route where
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: it looks like he's open, right, And yes, I understand
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: that some receivers are open when they're not open and
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff, but he all those guys
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: still have really good technique at the line of scrimmage,
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: and he's got to develop a go to release and
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: then once we get to that, then maybe a counter
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: off of it. Right, But if you need to have
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: a best release, like when he's one on one on
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: the on the back side like that, like on the
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: third down play that he runs out of bounds and
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: gets targeted on that play, there is not a mandatory
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: outside release. That's just best release, Like whatever your best
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: move is off the line of scrimmage, give me that
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: and get yourself off the line and get yourself open.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: And he didn't really have much there in terms of that,
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: And I think it was Killy Ringo, right, who I
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: do like a lot. Killy Ringo just bodied him into
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: the sideline because there's no wiggle there at the line
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: of scrimmage. He's got to get better there. And then
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: obviously there's the stuff with the drops and with his hands,
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: and I thought he slowed a little bit up on
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: that post route, you know, trying to track the ball.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: Like he comes out of the break, which was a
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: nice break by the way, a nice little nod, and
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: then hit the post and he comes out of it
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: and he's like looking up for the ball because he
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: doesn't have his eyes back into the backfield yet, so
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: he's like looking for the ball. And when he looks
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: for the ball, he slowed down a little bit. And
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: if he doesn't slow down, that's in stride instead of
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: him laying out to try to catch the football. It's
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: just little things like that. But I just don't want
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: people to be prized with Baker if he doesn't play
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: a ton early on in the season. Yeah, because I
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: know we're gonna get the calls and we're gonna get
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: the emails and people. You know, it's the same thing
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: with a Kaishan booty or what. Why isn't this guy playing?
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Why isn't this guy playing? And and these are the
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: reasons why he's not playing. Uh so we'll see you
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: with both these guys. Top three right now seems to
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: be Thorton, Douglas Polk, maybe kJ Osborne is like rotting
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: there three and a half with Jalen Polk. They want
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: to go bigger, take pop off the field early down. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: and that that seems to be the top three. People
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: really want to know what I think about Matt Landers.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Huh, they're still going on about it.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: Okay, So my take on Matt Landers. I remember him
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: coming out with Arkansas end. When you run a four
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: three seven, it catches the eye at six four catches
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: the eye. We went over all at the beginning of
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: the show, all the stuff about Taekwon and the role
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: and all that. Yeah, that exists for him in this offense.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: The biggest thing that I saw with Matt Landers though,
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: that he struggles with is rowt ttail, you know, not
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: exactly a technician, you know, he's a raw athlete right now,
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: maybe they feel like that they can develop those types
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: of guys better now than they could before. I'm not
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: holding my breath on that just yet. Yeah, but he's
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: someone that if you're a Javon Baker just a little bit.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's Javon Baker's making the team like
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: no one's saying yeah yeah, But if you're a Javon
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Baker and that uh with running with the twos and
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: the threes in that X role, this is a guy
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: that that could conceivably do that. Like Jaqwai Jackson was
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: the third X. He gets injured. Now Matt Landers is
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: the third X. That's the way I look at it.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: And I, by the way, I'm right there with you
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: in that. I think he's here because jaquaih Jackson got hurt. Yeah,
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: similar receiver. Like I said, six four ten, ran a
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: four three seven, you're six four two ten, you run
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: a four to three seven, you go undrafted. What does
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: that tell you? Yeah, right, that he's an incredibly raw,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: raw player. I don't mind him as a practice squad
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: it just like I was saying, I like Jaquoi Jackson
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: for the practice squad. Yeah, kind can't around see what happens.
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: Maybe if you really get get beat up depth wise,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: like I'd feel comfortable putting him in a game. I
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: don't know that I feel great about it, but I
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: feel comfortable with it. I put Matt Landers in that conversation,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: so hopefully six around on the practice squad. But I
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: don't think he's anything more than that.
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that. All right, let's take Patty's
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: call and then we'll read some more of these emails
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: in the show. Patty is an aquan. What's up, Patty?
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: What's going on? Guys?
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: How you doing good?
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: Good?
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: So you know, I like throwing the questions at you
- 1:24:39Speaker 5: guys all the time because there's two of you. So yeah,
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: the first one before we get into like the roster
- 1:24:45Speaker 5: breakdown next week, which I'm I know you guys are
- 1:24:47Speaker 5: going to do, and previewing the break Bengals game the
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: subsequent week sight unseen, And I'm going to bring up
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: something that I brought up a little while ago. I
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: think after the draft and after the schedule came out,
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: you guys think, honestly, regardless of who the starting quarterback is.
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: Question to one, do they have a chance to beat
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: the Bengals, because, like I brought up before many weeks ago,
- 1:25:13Speaker 5: they are notoriously slow starters in the Joe Burrow era.
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: And if you look at one of the teams that's
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: given them problems, you know, over the past couple of years,
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: it's been the Cleveland Browns in this system.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: And the second question, you're talking about wide receivers. Do
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: you think, because for all intensive purposes, Taekwan's probably going
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: to make the team, do you think with you know,
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: if he has a few regular season games something that
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: we haven't seen from him, do you think he could
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: actually become not a great player, but like kind of
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: like a middle of the road receiver and somebody that
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: can you can see like contributing into Drake may era
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: as it were, on this team. I'll take it off
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: the air and there's always the guys are.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: Great, right, thanks Patty, So do the Taekwon thing, and
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: I'll letting myself get do that much with Taekwon. I
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: don't feel like he's going to ever be in a
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: thousand yard receiver or anything crazy like that, but can
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: he be a role player within the framework of this
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: offense and the way that they're going to design this
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: offense can be a little bit different than it was
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: in the past, I would think. So that's where I'm at.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: I'm not going any further than that. I believe he
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: could be a role player, Like he could be a
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: field stretching role player. Trying to think of a good example,
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: like maybe like a Philip dor Set, you know, but
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: obviously a little bit different because he's longer than taller
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: than Philip Dorset was, but like something along those lines,
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: which is a serviceable NFL caliber field stretcher. But not again,
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: not tyreek Kill, not you know, Randy Moss, like not
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: like the not a high volume guy, but somebody that
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: could do that sort of thing. I could sell myself
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: on that. That's about as far as I would go.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, just kind of that, you know, like Nelson
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: Aguilar type. I guess that's gonna be the best. I
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: was trying to remember. Wasn't one of there's like ten
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: Mike Williams. That's why I can't remember. Wasn't there a
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Mike Williams that played for the Steelers who was just.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: Like a burner Mike Wallace.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: Mike Wallace. That's yeah, there's so many Mike Williams. Yeah,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: I always forget about Mike Wallace. Like Mike and Mike
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: Wallace had a long career. He was in the league
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: for like ten years. He's never he had a couple
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: of thousand yard seasons early, but he was just kind
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: of we're gonna put you on the outside, yeah, and
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: you're gonna run a go ball. And he was consistent
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: enough that he stayed on the field.
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: He got ten touchdowns one year in Miami.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: Like, yeah, it signed a big contract with the Dolphs.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: Right, could he be that? That's probably his ceiling. That's
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: probably Taekwon's ceiling. Yeah, somewhere between uh uh, Nelson Agil
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: or Mike Wallace. But if he can put it together,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: that's the kind of player you're looking at.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: I'll give you one more just.
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: But he's got to stay healthy to be able to
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: do that, which I'll believe when I see it.
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll give you one more just because of the
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: body type.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Robbie Anderson like actually Jets, Like I hate to use
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: prime with Robbie Anderson, but like when Robby Anderson was
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: actually relevant, Okay.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Like you know, I I thought Robbie Anderson in Carolina.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: Like when he had that breakout here in Carolina, I
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: was so ready to be like, this guy is it,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: this guy is going to be an elite receiver. And
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: then obviously he just completely fell off the map. But yeah, yeah,
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: I could see that. I hold Robbie robb it's Robbie
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: chosen now, by the way, whatever it is, I hold
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: Robbie chosen in high regard for that one season. That
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: one season, I was locked. I was locked in, I
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: was ready to I was on the band. Met mister oh,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: it's the best. I remember when when they came here
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: for a joint practice last year, like he did a scrum. Yeah,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: but he was like he kind of confused as to
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: while the reporters were talking to him.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: I'm sure he did. I think he always looks confused.
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: That's just Robbie Anderson's face.
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: He no, but like you're to go back to the point,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: like you're exactly right, that kind of player where he
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: wasn't the most technically sound wide receiver. No, he didn't
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: run a diverse rout tree. But if he needed somebody
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: to run past the defense, he was pretty freaking good
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: at it. Fast guy or run fast right and That's
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: that's it. But not just fast, big and fat and big.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: When I say big, I mean height because that helps.
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: Because that's length. You can improves the catch radius.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: That's that. That to me has always been Taekwon's Yeah,
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: Peke Robbie Anderson has always been Taekwon seiling.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: Well again, Pete Robby Anderson, you're talking about borderline all pro. No,
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: he wasn't that ninety five catches, eleven hundred yards. He
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: somehow only caught three touchdowns.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: Okay, but maybe it's a little bit better than I thought.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: But still ninety that year in Carolina and that I
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: don't think that was a great Carolina team in twenty twenty.
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: That that he's not in. Taekwon is never going to
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: catch ninety five passes, So that that's that's act.
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: So Mike Wallace for comparison, Mike Wallace is big year
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: and the yards are more. And maybe this is borderline
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: all pro too, but Mike Walla's big here. He caught
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: sixty passes for twelve hundred yards in ten touchdowns. He
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: averaged twenty one yards per catch. Like, if Taekwon's good,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: that's the guy he's gonna be. It's an average twenty
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: one yards per catch. He's only gonna catch two or
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: three balls a game, kind of like Javon Baker. I
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: think Jayvon Baker is the guy they wanted in that role.
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: It didn't work out, And now here's Taekwon. He caught
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: sixty for twelve hundred, seventy for twelve hundred. Later in
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: his career, caught seventy two for one thousand in Baltimore.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: That's a good Colm.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: He's kind of perfect Joe Flacko receiver.
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: Can I just call out somebody in the chat real fast?
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: You look the cha I did look at the chat.
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: I've been trying to look at the chat a little
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: bit more. I know, usually monitored the chat, but I
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: like to look at it and see if it's we.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: Do look so like the guy called me chubby earlier,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: Like we see that you're gonna call us out. We
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: see it.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: So I don't. I don't. I don't even know how
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: to say. This guy's name ant Antiquippo, ant Guapo and Guapo, Yep,
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: he does not like you. Aunt Guampo claims that I
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: was out on Pop Douglas somebody else.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: It might have been him, somebody claims that you are
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: too big of a college football fan in your opinions
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: on players get blurred.
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: Somebody said that's probably you. They probably said both of us.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: Honestly, no, he said Alex and Evan. He said you too.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: You Evan college football nutt too big of a college football.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: Fan for AP Currently, though I was down on the
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: draft pick when the drafted Pop Douglas.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: Honestly don't remember. No, Yeah, you liked Pop. I've always
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: liked you were I think you were probably bummed in
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: and takes a Flowers, but I we we saw Pop
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: at this We started the whole Pop Douglas there. We
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: literally were the reason why Pop Douglas was on the map.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: If you were if you looked on NFL mock draft
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: database at that time and you see Pop Douglas's draft stock,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: He's like the four hundredth best player in the draft.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: And then the Shrine Bowl happened. We were the only
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: two people that were talking about it in the Shrine Bowl.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: It shoots up that Isla. I love these podcasts.
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: I will allow people to call me out when I'm wrong,
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: like I talked about earlier in the show. That's fine,
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: But if you go we were live on the air
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: when they draft. Go watch my live reaction to them
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: drafting Pop Douglas. I was pumped. I was in a
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: depressed state when they gave me Jake Andrews and a kicker.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: He says, you were down Evan when he was drafted.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: That is absolutely ridiculous. That is I'm trying to think,
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: can be further from the truth.
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: Who might he be thinking of. I have no idea
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: you weren't down on Booty. I don't think he cared
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: one way or the other, the guy like the other
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: receiver that I.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Remember my almost exactly what I said in uh in
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: the draft, I said Pop Douglas saved Day three of
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: the draft for the day Day three d I said
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: that was the nickname Dave. I remember saying it. Ridiculous, blasphemy, blasphemy.
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: Just he says, you said it, so somebody's gonna have
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: to pull the table.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: Yeah, go pull the t of our Day three draft
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: show from twenty twenty three, the of me being amped
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: about Pop Doug.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: The only thing he might be thinking of, the only
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: thing he might be thinking of is I go back
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: to that would have been twenty three, right, Yeah, for
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: like a month after the Shrine Bowl. You very much
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: liked Pop Douglas, but you could not remember his name
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: because there was another guy that was there. There were
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: two guys that were what's it called in the first
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: when the two letters are the same, of like uh,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: because he was he was ja Mario Douglas. Who knows
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: his name was pap yet yeah to Mario Douglas. And
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: there's a guy named Dallas Day from Jackson State, and
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: that was who we both we kind of liked too
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: as like a specialties player.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: He was in the city. It was they literally had
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: three levels of the same player at the Shrine Bowl.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: It was Zay Flowers was the top guy, Pop was
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: the second guy, and then Dallas Daniels was the third.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Zayden practice. So it was Dallas Daniels and Mario Douglas
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: in the same role like switching off drives. By the way,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: Dallas Daniels is playing professional football in the state of Massachusetts.
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: Worster pirates.
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: Oh my, good for him.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: But that's the only thing I can think of you
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: it took you like a month to figure out to
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: Mario Douglas's name.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: I do remember that I could not He was like
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: my day three sleeper like I could not have been
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: higher on Da Mario Douglas anyway, Sorry, we can move on.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: I just remember Jadakiss Bonds. Yes, that's a great name.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: All right, let's answer some of these emails. He was
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: also Vallie Slow last thirty minutes here. So in Canada,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: are you done? Yeah?
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: This question is Ryan in Dublin. He has a question
- 1:33:57Speaker 2: for you, mostly Alex, because he knows that I'm not
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: going to know the answer to this one. So apparently
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: Florida State Georgia Tech is playing.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: Week zero baby college football on Saturday.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: They're playing in Dublin. Is that? Did you know that
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: they're playing in Ireland? Yeah? All right, so they're playing
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: in Dublin. So his question for you, Alex is who
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: are a couple of key players for the draft next
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: year from Florida State and from Georgia Tech that maybe
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: he can look out for while he's at the game.
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: So I'm actually I'll have something up on ninety eight
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: five the Sports Lub on Friday.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: I know you would.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: Kind of players to watch for this whole season, not
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: just week one. When it comes to Georgia Tech, it's
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: not a big gear for the draft. I don't even
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: know if they have any guys projected to be drafted.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: That can always change, but right now not so much.
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: I'll give you two guys from Florida State, one specifically
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: for the Patriots and one that's relevant to the Patriots
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: that they won't draft, but it's still uh they might draft.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: All right. The guy Patriots fan Shoudo and I actually
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: talked about him last year. I thought he was gonna
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: come out last year and he didn't is Patrick Payton.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: Patrick Payton is an edge rusher. He opposite Chared Vers
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: last year, so he put up some big numbers. He's
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: now back. He's gonna be their primary guy off the edge.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: When we talked, we talked about this earlier with ke
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: On White. Evan, this is actually a guy that you
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: specifically should watch because this goes see your take. Keon
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: White is a disruptor. He's not a finisher. You want
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: the guy on the edge, the josh Ucha type. Just
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: pin your ears back and go after the quarterback. Yes,
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: that's Patrick Payton. And what I really like about him
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: he played last year at like two hundred, twenty five
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: to twenty six to five. Played last year at like
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: two twenty five to two thirty. He weighed in this
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: year at two point fifty, so now he's got more
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: that Matthew Judon kind of body type. It's actually a
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: little I think bigger, but he was a speed player
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: last year, so if he can keep up some of
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: that speed and agility coming off the edge, this is
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: a guy that's protected to be a late first early
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: second round pick. So certainly in range where the Patriots
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: should be taking an edge guy, assuming they go tackle
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: at the top of the draft. You know, if you
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: get a veteran wide receiver, now, edge is probably your
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: biggest need.
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: YEP.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: Patrick Pate is one of the guys for Patriots fans
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: to watch this year. Absolutely somebody to tune into. He
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: wears number eleven and he's mostly gonna be rushing off
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: that week side the other guy on Florida State at
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. There's really no draft Haines King's fun to
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: watch their quarterback enjoy that, but he's like five eleven
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: really just runs. He's kind of he's got some hot
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: stetson Bennett in his game, but like I honestly little
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: Max Duggan, but he doesn't have the swagger the other
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: guy to watch and Evan, you've heard me talk a
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: lot about this guy, and I'll give you two reasons
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: why Patriots SPAN should watch him. Dj Uey ungle A
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: the quarterback from Florida State. Listen, no, listen, no, let.
- 1:36:41Speaker 2: Me explain it, did you, bo Nix? Is that where
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: you're going with this.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: Sort of there's two There's two reasons I think Patriots
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: SPAN should watch him. One is bo Nicks slash Jayden Daniels.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: It's a copycat league. If Jayden Daniels has a big year,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: everybody is going to be looking for that older transfer
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: quarterback who's projected lower in the draft that suddenly pops
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: off the other guy that that relates somewhat to djungle
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: a copycat league. Spencer Rattler dje Ungla has had a
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: very similar career path. They're different quarterbacks. Dju. I'm gonna
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: call him Dju because he's here to say, yeah, six five,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: two forty five, big, big arm. Spencer Rattler smaller and
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: more mobile, but former top recruit went to a bad situation.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: Not just former like number one, number one recruit.
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: When I say to mean topper, I think dj was
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: number two by the time his class has ended, but
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: he was number one.
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: For a while because that that's the same class that
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: Drake was in.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: Yes, Yeah, went to Clemson, didn't work. Went to Oregon
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: State last year, made some progrect. Clemson ruined the kid.
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: I don't know what they were trying to turn him into,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: but it wasn't right. Went to so probably something right.
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: Went to Oregon State last year, made progress. Now he's
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: at a Florida State offense that I think really plays
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: to his skill set. They got a ton of speed,
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: They're gonna be throwing the ball all over the yard.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: He's got a big arm. He's not a runner, but
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: he's effective when he gets to the outside. If he
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: has a good year, teams are gonna he is going.
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: He's a guy that I could see becoming this year's
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: jayde Daniels in that nobody thought this guy because he
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: was in the wrong place, in the wrong time for
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: a long time. If he has a good year, not
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: a guarantee. The other reason Patriots fans so in that sense, sorry,
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: how that relates to the Patriots. Yes, let me finish
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: the take. There are gonna be teams that need quarterbacks
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: next year. The Raiders, the Giants, et cetera. They might
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: need to move up with the Patriots. The more good
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: quarterbacks the better, even though the Patriots aren't drafting one,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: because if they're in a position where you can draft
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: Will Campbell and trade down, or you can draft Will
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: Johnson and trade down or James Pearce and trade down,
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: the more quarterbacks the better. So it's good for Patriots
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: fans of tj O. Junglay is good. Let's say he's
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: not good. I still think he's relevant to the Patriots.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: And I'll tell you why. What is the Elliott wolf
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: Packer way approach to drafting quarterbacks? Joe Milton, Well, I
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: was gonna say every other year, if not every year, Right,
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: that's so they're gonna draft. I would not be surprised
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: if they draft a quarterback next year. It's gonna be later.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: It would be Joe Milton.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: So I oo young. He doesn't. He's a little different
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: than Joe Milton, but.
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: He reminds me of a little of Joe Melton.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: Big quarterback, big.
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: Arm, big quarterback, big arm, who can't read the field.
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: Big quarterback, big arm who can't read. If they drafted
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: Drake May, big quarterback, big arm, unless you want to
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: say Drake May can't read the field.
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: No, I'm saying that it's similar to Joe Milton. Yeah,
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: so anyways, quite as raw toolsy as like Joe. He's
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: got a bigger arm and all that.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: But Milton has a bigger arm, and I think ou
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: Jung lays a little more developed than his mechanics. Maybe
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: not reading the field, his mechanics are better. They're gonna.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: I would not be surprised they draft a quarterback on
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: Day three next year, and dj you is definitely the
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: kind of quarterback that they seem to target. Okay, so
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Patrick Payton DJU.
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: So I had the classes wrong, but I went down
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: this rabbit hole and I wrote my story about Drake
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: May after the draft. Drake May was twenty twenty one,
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: DJU was twenty twenty. Yeah, but Drake May had an
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: offer from Clemson on the table that he turned down
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: because DJU was going to Clemson. So the number one
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: recruit in that class was Bryce Young. He originally Bryce
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: Young committed to a USC. Yep, he's gonna play for
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley at yesseh. He decommitted from USC and then
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: flipped to Alabama obviously, So he goes to Alabama. Drake
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: May in the twenty one class was committed to Alabama
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: because he thought he was gonna be the guy after
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: the you know Mac Jones. Yeah, correct, So he de
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: commits from Alabama because Bryce's young committed to Alabama. DJU
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: commits to Clemson, so he doesn't go to Clemson. Ye,
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: because dj U's at Clemson.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: C J.
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: Stroud goes to Ohio State. So Drake May doesn't go
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: to Ohio State because c J. Stroud commits to Ohio State.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: So all these sort of like dominoes is like what
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: led to Drake May eventually going to North Carolin.
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: So as much of a college football fan as I am,
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: I don't follow recruiting a ton. I'm like aware of
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: the big players, but I don't track it. I don't
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: really look beyond the senior class. It's you think, like
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: the draft and free agency, and there's a lot of
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: moving pieces there following recruiting, especially in the modern era,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: it's a roller coaster.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: Meanwhile, you know it was so number three in that
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: class was Brian Berzy, where I think a lot of
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: people know. First round pick number four was Julian Fleming.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: I'm really interested to see and we can get back
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: to modern times after this. I one more draft thought
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: for you.
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: So, Julian Fleming draft question for you, I think so okay.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: For all of the stars that have come through Ohio
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: State at wide receiver, do you know who the highest
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: ranked recruit was going back to I mean, I think
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: we're going back to like Paris Campbell here. Ye, the
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: highest ranked recruit was a guy named Julian Fleming. He
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: was the fourth rank recruit in that class. Bryce Young, Dju,
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: Brian Berzee, Julian Fleming. He is the one guy they
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: couldn't figure out. He was there for four years. He
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: was fine, he was never great. He kept getting passed
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: over by these other guys, and now he's at pet
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: Penn State for a grad year. Yeah, so he's gonna
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: come in the draft and there's going to be a
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: lot of people that say Julian Fleming red flag. He's
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: the one receiver Ohio State couldn't figure out. I don't
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: know why they couldn't figure him out and neverb watching
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: that closely because again, he couldn't really get on the field.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: Can't tell me you're not interested by the one receiver
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: that Ohio State couldn't crack, and he's like their highest
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: ranked recruit at the position.
- 1:42:18Speaker 2: That doesn't bow well, Brian Hartline couldn't.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: Like I'm curious, and it's not that he was bad.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: He just kept getting passed by all these other guys
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: and I'm kind of curious why.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: I'm actually and the answer this question, I know this
- 1:42:29Speaker 2: is not your wasn't your point, but the answer to
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: this question is probably that Ohio State played pays Brian
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: Hartline like a gajillion dollars to stay there. I am
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: so shocked that an NFL team hasn't offered Brian Hartline
- 1:42:41Speaker 2: just eight hours.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: I say this all the time, Truck, like how have
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: you not?
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: And I get that some of it is like chicken
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: with the egg because they recruit so well. So like
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: you could say that Marvin Harrison Junior was going to
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: be good no matter where he went, well.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: He was like he was not as highly ranked crew.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: And it's also just not Marv, Like it's it's Marv,
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: it's McLaurin, it's JSN. It's like the list goes on
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: and on and on of recent Ohio State. You know,
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: Wilson a lave like all these guys are just studs.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: And Brian Hardline is the coach like he's the one,
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: he's the whisperer, he's the wide receiver guy. So I
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: can't believe that an NFL team hasn't just thrown I
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: throw ten million at that guy to coach.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: Remember the name, and I already forgot his name, Julian Fleming.
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: I'm curious what you think when we get there?
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: All right, a couple of there's one draft question, but
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: also there's a bunch of questions actually believed or not
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: about cold Strange. So there's been some reporting about I
- 1:43:35Speaker 2: guess Garredy might have had a little nugget about cold
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: Strange and his timetable and timeline. So the number one
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: question I guess is, uh, are you expecting anything from
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: cold Strange? But a secondary question to that, someone actually
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: asked if we feel that cold Strange could be a
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: center when he comes back? And I have a little
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: bit of a theory about this, but do you think
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: that Cole Strange is Are you expecting Cole Strange to
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: contribute at all this year?
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: It's tough to say because their guard play has been
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: good and they clearly don't want to mess with that
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: interior if it's working. I don't know that there's a
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: job for him when he comes back.
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: I'm with you.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: Maybe they rotate him in and maybe they like he
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: takes some snat like twenty or thirty percent of the
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: snaps a game from city so or just to keep
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: him fresh, right, keep him healthy. Yeah, but I don't
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: think there's a full time job waiting for col Strange
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: when he gets back.
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you on that one.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I do think he can play center. Maybe the job
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: is backup center.
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so to the center point. I feel this way
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: about center, and he would be a really small tackle.
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: But he just meets the length threshold for tackle. But
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: just hear me out for a second. So, the biggest
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: problem that I see with Cole Strange when I watch
- 1:44:45Speaker 2: him is that he is too small to play on
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: the interior at guard. He just gets bodied. He he
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: is not powerful enough to play at that spot. Now,
- 1:44:56Speaker 2: the counter to that could be, well, if he's in
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: an outside zone scheme instead of a downhill scheme, maybe
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: that translates a little bit better. I'll allow for that.
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: I'll give that possibility to him. But what I see
- 1:45:06Speaker 2: most of the time with Cold Strange against NFL caliber,
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: like starting caliber defensive tackles is I can't get the
- 1:45:13Speaker 2: images of like DeForest Buckner and Quinn Williams just manhandling
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: him in pass protection. That that's the concern with me
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: with Cold Strange. So what do you do if he's
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: not burly enough to play guard? Center is an option
- 1:45:27Speaker 2: because center usually you're uncovered most of the time, or
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: you have it. It's a different role, different position. Center
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: is also really important in this system because center sets
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: the pace of the line in the run game, yeah,
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: and in the and outside zone scheme. So if he's
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: the best athlete that they have probably at the position,
- 1:45:47Speaker 2: then he can be somebody that could get out and
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: reach and you know, hit the second level and all
- 1:45:52Speaker 2: those kinds of stuff. I'm intrigued by. Center tackle is
- 1:45:57Speaker 2: probably loftier, probably less likely, but just wouldn't you just
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: from a body type standpoint, Just think about it from
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: a body type standpoint, Cole Strange going up against two
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: hundred and fifty pound edge rushers instead of Cold Strange
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: going up against three hundred and twenty pound nose tackles
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: just feels like a better matchup to me. For him, right,
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: So I think it's lofty. The technique's different. It's you're
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: playing in space. It's probably too much of a transition.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: Center is probably more realistic. But if I'm the Patriots,
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: I'm starting to think about how do I get Cole
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: Strange away from Quentin Williams.
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: But you also have a guy that's coming off a
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: very significant knee injury, and now you're asking him to
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: be very mobile. Yep, and that's a tough ask.
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: It is a tough ask. There's no doubt about that.
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: All right, Paul is asking about the Landon Robinson pick.
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, speaking of there's a theory in
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: the chat that it was Paul Perrillo who didn't like
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: Pop Douglas, not you.
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: So I won't I don't want to pick on Paul
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: too much because he's not here. I'd rather pick on
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: him to his face. But but Paul, Paul doesn't have
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: time for the Day three of the draft, like he
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: all those guys who Day three of the draft, unless
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: there's a guy like I like like Pop Douglas, or.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: You get annoyed with me after the top one hundred.
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: I don't do as much studying of the film after
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: the top one hundred, I usually try to do like
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: the top one twenty five, just so that I know,
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: I know everybody that gets drafted in the top one hundred, right,
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: Like that's that's big to me. Uh but yeah, usually
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: by the end of the fourth round is when my
- 1:47:28Speaker 2: film study stuff, and then I just have notes from
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: other people, you know, the beast, you know whatever. But yeah,
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: Paul is not everybody on day three to the draft.
- 1:47:39Speaker 2: To Paul is a lottery ticket, which is I mean,
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: he's not wrong, it's pretty fair. Yeah. To us, it's like,
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: you know, we talk about Red Sox prospects, and I
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: always like joke about Marcella Meyer being a bust and
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: thing and things like that. Like to us, it's like that,
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: you know, it's like Tyler Milliken getting all jazzed up
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: about you know, Roman Anthony, right, you know, like that's
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: day three of the draft to us. But to Paul,
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: day three the draft is there's a ten percent chance
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: this guy actually turns into an NFL player, So why
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: would I waste my time? Right like that that's.
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: The Roman Anthony, not a six round pick kind of player. Okay, anyway, Still,
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: the miners.
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: Uh that that just kind of.
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: Uh so, Yeah, Luther Burden sucks. He's still in college,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: he's not in the NFL yet. I mean, it's essentially
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: what you're.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Saying, we don't know about Luther Burdon yet. He might suck.
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: So here's the draft question I wanted to ask you,
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: and it's more draft philosophy than it is about prospects.
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: But the question is we all know that left tackle
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: is going to be a big need. Receiver is still out.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: There is need a big fish at receiver. But is
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: there a chance that pass rusher outside edge rusher like
- 1:48:49Speaker 2: I like to call him, you call him outside linebackers
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: if that replacing Matthew judah on To simplify it even
- 1:48:55Speaker 2: more for people, is there a world where that ends
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: up actually being their biggest draft need? Like, can we
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: get to the point where they signed T Higgins. I'm
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: just going to dream and buy in the sky here
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: they signed T Higgins, Maybe they sign like a serviceable
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: veteran left tackle or something like that, and outside linebacker
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: pass rushers ends up being the top need in the.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's their third biggest need, so definitely,
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: I would say corner could sneak in there.
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: Too.
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: Yep, I wouldn't roll that out. Yeah, yeah, no, it
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: could absolutely happen. I just don't think they're gonna find
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: that tackle, and I receiver they can, they can remove
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: from the needs relatively easel. And when I say that,
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: I mean give up the second round pick, give up
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: thirty million dollars, right, get Seed Lamb, get dk Metcalf.
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: People know how I feel about that. Yeah, you're not
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: getting that equivalent tackle, and I just I don't. I
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: don't think another bridge left tackle is the answer. We
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: talked about this last week. How long down the road,
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: Trent Brown, you gotta answer that question. This is kind
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: of what I said about quarterbacks and last draft. And
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: there are gonna be people who say, well, there's these receivers,
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: blah blah. It's like, this is a position that's hard
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: to get. You have a chance to get eleaite prospect
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: at it.
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: Do it?
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: Yeah, do it that simple, do it. And so I
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: still think it's Will Campbell and Calvin Banks. I did
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: a little more deep digging on that yesterday. By the way,
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: might be closer between the two, and I thought, and
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: I mean that as a positive for Calvin Banks, not
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: negative for Will Campbell.
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: So I'm not sure about that, but it's not because
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: I don't like Calvin Banks. So Calvin Banks, I watch
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: a lot of him because who's the other tackle at Texas?
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: Oh, it was something Jones got drafted this past year. Yeah,
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: I remember. It's crazy how we obsessed about these names
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: for like four months and they just fall out of
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: our brains. Christian Jones, Christian Jones, Christian Jones, Worthy, Ada Mitt, Yeah,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: a lot of Texas.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: I was just watching that offense all all spring long.
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: So I did watch a little bit of Calvin Banks,
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: like out of the corner of my eye. He's a stud.
- 1:50:50Speaker 2: He's a stud. He's really good. I would put him
- 1:50:53Speaker 2: in like the alpha Shanu Tier. Yeah, I think there's
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: a chance that Will Campbell's like s Tier special.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: See, I would go. And here's the thing with these two.
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: And I realized this about this draft yesterday. I don't
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: I have a slight take on it. I can give
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: you if you want, But the top of this draft
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: is all true juniors. Campbell, Banks, McMillan, Burden, Pierce, and Johnson.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: Those are the seven guys we can even throw in
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: Deon Walker from Kentucky. Those are the guys we're realistically
- 1:51:20Speaker 1: going to talk about for the Patriots. Every single one
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: of those guys is a true junior. I don't necessarily
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: like it's good you're getting younger players, there's more runway.
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: The only take I really have on it is, whichever
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: guy you want the Patriots draft the most Campbell burden,
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: whoever you want to root for that team to win
- 1:51:35Speaker 1: the national championship, because the last thing we need is
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: Will Campbell going back for some unfinished business in a
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: big nil bag. Oh god, right now. But they're so young,
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: so there's still a long way to go, and I
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: think Alt had a little more experience at this now.
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: By the time Campbell gets to the draft, he'll be
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: even with allt. But there's still a whole year to
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: play out. We have to see what happens as it
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: stands right now. And I'm not saying Campbell can't catch
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: All as it stands right now for me, from the
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: last two drafts, Campbell, Alt, Campbell Banks for Shanhu. Yeah,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: that's how i'd rank him. That's that's fair. But that
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: that I think you're projecting a little more going into
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: the season. I'm saying, if Will Campbell came to the
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: draft today without having played his junior season. That's right happening.
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: So the reason why I have Will Campbell maybe a
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: little bit ahead of Joe Alt, Yeah, is that the
- 1:52:21Speaker 2: one you know, I love Joe Alt, But the one
- 1:52:23Speaker 2: knock that I had that you'd have on Joe Alt
- 1:52:25Speaker 2: is that he's not He's not overly mean, Like he's
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: not a nasty finisher. He's more of a dancing bear
- 1:52:31Speaker 2: than he is, like a physical guy. Will Campbell's nasty,
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: Like Will Campbell finishes like he puts dudes in the
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: ground while also having the footwork and the agility and
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff to dance on an island
- 1:52:43Speaker 2: right with pass rushers. So he's got a little bit
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: more snarl or nastiness to his game than Joe All.
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Joe Alt is uh. I think a great comparison is
- 1:52:52Speaker 2: he's a little bit bigger and like more prototypical, but like, uh,
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: remember like Jake Matthews with the Falcons, like that, That's
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: who I think of with Joel, whereas with Will Campbell,
- 1:53:03Speaker 2: he has a lot of those same traits but with
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: like a little bit more.
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: Nasty, like a Taylor Lawan kind of Yeah, it's a
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: good comp Yeah, Yeah, that's who I see a little bit.
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: Yeah, he's he's mean, like he's gonna he's gonna finish
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: blocks and things like that.
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: Banks too. Banks has a nasty streak to him too.
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: That's that's what I love.
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: We're gonna have We're gonna have fun. We're gonna have
- 1:53:23Speaker 1: a lot of fun with it. I just and I understand.
- 1:53:26Speaker 2: And you know, on PU you can throw it at
- 1:53:29Speaker 2: Paul He's not even here doing this to his face.
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: But you know, the offensive line talks sometimes. Yeah, I
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: see some glossy eyes and you know, so people checking
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: their phones and you know, stuff like that. There is
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: nothing more reassuring to me for Drake May's long term
- 1:53:46Speaker 2: development than drafting a stud left tackle and just knowing
- 1:53:49Speaker 2: his blind side is protected for the next ten years.
- 1:53:52Speaker 2: Like that, to me, it would just be so like
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: I'd breathe such a sire relief. Would I be as
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: excited as if they got a number one receiver right
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: like if it was if there was I don't know
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: if Luther Burdens in this category, but if there was
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: a Marvin Harrison junior in this draft and they drafted
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: that guy instead, would I be more excited, probably just
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: because it's a receiver and it's this straight. Sure, but
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: it's just the shiny toy versus like the socks on Christmas. Right,
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: But will Campbell just or Kelvin Banks being the blindside
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: protector for Drake May and finally filling that that need
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: after years of kicking the can down the road, I
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: would be I have a huge smile on my face.
- 1:54:35Speaker 2: I'd be like, Yes, we got a left tackle. This
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: is great, this is what we've all wanted. It'd be great.
- 1:54:41Speaker 2: So I'm all aboard left tackle, but I could see
- 1:54:45Speaker 2: pass rusher if they somehow find a way to get
- 1:54:47Speaker 2: a left tackle in the veteran market, which just seems unlikely.
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: But if they do so, I'd be.
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: The projected top guy. Right Now's a guy named James
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Pearce from Tennessee. He so unlike some of the other
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: guys who are true junior who so Campbell and Banks
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: and Burden and McMillan actually all started as true freshmen.
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: They all had Burden started like halfway through his freshman year,
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: but they essentially all have one and a half to
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: two years of experience. Pierce only started last year. He didn't.
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: He played thirteen games a true freshman, but it's mostly
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: on special teams or like latent games. So his first
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: year is good yet I think forty one no. Fifty
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: six pressures and fourteen in ten sacks and thirteen games.
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: But it's just one year. And the thing about Pierce
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: really good pass rusher, really doesn't give you anything against
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: the run. Yeah, and are they would they be willing
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: to take a guy and we'll see what he does.
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: He has more variants. He could end up not being
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: the top pass rusher. Is a guy named Abdul Carter
- 1:55:45Speaker 1: at Penn State who's gonna get some attention to. But
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: Pierce is the highest ceiling. Do they would they take
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: a guy like Pierce who projects be an elite pass
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: rusher if he can't play against the run?
- 1:55:56Speaker 2: So is he like a like a Brian Burns type.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: He's not quite that like powerful.
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: That's how I think of when you tell the birds.
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: Is like big and powerful pierces. I mean, he's got
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: good size, but he's not He's more of a finesse rusher.
- 1:56:08Speaker 2: All right, let's take this last call and then we
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: got to wrap it up. Connor is in Florida. What's up, Connor.
- 1:56:14Speaker 3: Hey, So I just had a question for you guys, now,
- 1:56:17Speaker 3: just one of your thoughts on this. So back in
- 1:56:19Speaker 3: like twenty two, we had like a pretty good interior
- 1:56:23Speaker 3: line with like Mason, we had a whnu Kris Andrews.
- 1:56:28Speaker 3: We had Andrews, and then we also had Tuney for
- 1:56:31Speaker 3: a little bit before, you know, right before Mac Jones
- 1:56:33Speaker 3: rook year. What do you think Bill's like logic was,
- 1:56:37Speaker 3: and just basically letting all them go, then forcing them
- 1:56:40Speaker 3: to draft Cold Strange and then just the trickle down
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: effect with that with you draft Strange that year when
- 1:56:46Speaker 3: you could have probably gotten you know, if they decided
- 1:56:48Speaker 3: to go Trent McDuffie with the original pick they had
- 1:56:50Speaker 3: before trading it, then the next year when you picked Gonzalez,
- 1:56:54Speaker 3: you could have picked a receiver. I just want to
- 1:56:55Speaker 3: know your thoughts and what you thought Bill might have
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: been thinking with that.
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call. Look at we've been down
- 1:57:01Speaker 2: this road before. Yeah, it's to me the beginning of
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: the end for the offensive line, if you want to
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: call it that. I was letting Joe Tony walk in
- 1:57:10Speaker 2: free agency.
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: Well, at the beginning of the end of the offensive
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: line is one scart left.
- 1:57:13Speaker 2: No because Caren Bissello had the line in good shit. Okay,
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: So it started to me with the decision to let
- 1:57:23Speaker 2: Joe Touni walk to the Kansas City Chiefs right like
- 1:57:26Speaker 2: he was in a lot of ways, it's similar to
- 1:57:28Speaker 2: what they've done now where it was like, yeah, it's
- 1:57:32Speaker 2: a lot of money for Mike on Winnu as a guard,
- 1:57:35Speaker 2: but he's one of your best football players and right
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: now you just don't have a whole lot of good
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: football players on the roster. And they were kind of
- 1:57:42Speaker 2: in that spot at the same time too with Joe
- 1:57:44Speaker 2: Toney and they let Joe Tony walk to Kansas City. Who,
- 1:57:47Speaker 2: by the way, Joe Toney is like low key on
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: a Hall of Fame trajectory. Yeah, first, he might be
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: the best Garden football He's unreal. He's like an All Pro.
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: He's won like seventeen Super Bowls at this point, Like
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: he's gonna be in the conversation for gold jacket if
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: he keeps on thinking at.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: The end, I think he is, he's gonna get one.
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: I don't think it's a conversation.
- 1:58:04Speaker 2: So Joe Toney then in the same off season twenty
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: twenty one. It's a year later from Tony. They low
- 1:58:11Speaker 2: ball Ted Carrison free agency and they trade Shack Mason
- 1:58:14Speaker 2: like in within like a week of each other. Yeah,
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: and they created this gigantic coal up guard. Now they
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: have On. They had On Wenu, so they had one
- 1:58:22Speaker 2: guard spot. But like the caller said, that prompted the
- 1:58:25Speaker 2: domino effect of taking Cold Strange in the first round.
- 1:58:28Speaker 2: What I Belichick was thinking to me was guards not
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: a premium position. I'm not gonna pay premium dollars for guards, Yeah,
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: because I feel like I have one and On already
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: and I can just draft one for and get him
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: much cheaper than what I'm gonna have to pay Shack
- 1:58:46Speaker 2: Mason or Joe Tuny or even Ted Carris, and we'll
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: just draft and replace and everything will be just fine.
- 1:58:52Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: The problem was they didn't draft well, right, they draft
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: Cold Strange and it didn't work out the other thing
- 1:58:57Speaker 2: that I think was really key with the offensive line,
- 1:58:59Speaker 2: and then we got to wrap it up up. Car
- 1:59:01Speaker 2: and Bricella leaving with Josh McDaniels to Vegas. Yeah, Carnbrosella
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: leaves after the twenty twenty one season. He goes to
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: the Vegas Raiders with Josh McDaniels, and the Patriots replaced
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: carm Barcello with Matt Patricia.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: Who is also dealing with being the offensive coordinator while
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: he's coaching the offense line.
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: And at that point what ended up happening is that
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: a lot of the young guys that they had in
- 1:59:24Speaker 2: the pipeline, including Cole Strange to the point he their
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: development just got derailed because they weren't getting coached properly. Right,
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: so they have that the whole Matt Patricia thing goes awry.
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: Then Adrian clem that whole thing was a disaster last year.
- 1:59:41Speaker 2: So really, these linemen, and I think a lot of
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: these guys that have been on the Patriots are having
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: this realization like, holy crap, we have Scott Piers actually
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: has like a strike system and like has like rules
- 1:59:51Speaker 2: for us.
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: Since Scott Peters is here, he's available.
- 1:59:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and all of a sudden, it's like, wow, you know,
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: we're getting coached and you're seeing that with you know,
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: improvements from guys you know rookies Leydon Robinson, kid and
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: Walls getting better. But Darien Lowe, I know, he's everybody's
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: like like lightning Rod right now, but he's gotten better,
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: you know, and and and that's what's happened with a
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: lot of these guys. So hopefully the coaching comes back
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: to earth and that solidifies a lot of things. But yeah,
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: that that that conversation has been on going. We've all
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: had that on every various platforms over the last couple
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: of years. As a misstep from Belichick. All right, that's
- 2:00:27Speaker 2: gonna do it for this week's show. Uh, next week.
- 2:00:31Speaker 2: I believe we're gonna have to be on Thursday next week, Alex,
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: because the studio is not gonna be available on Wednesday
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: because of some technical stuff going.
- 2:00:39Speaker 1: Well that and that works because by then the roster
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: will be more set.
- 2:00:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so we're gonna probably be back Thursday. Maybe ten
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: am Thursday, Marine, Nope, afternoon Thursday. Yeah, afternoon Thursday.
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: Honesty, Thursday might be like they might have practiced in
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: the morning and stuff like that.
- 2:00:53Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, so we'll figure it out. But we're
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: hoping that.
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: You guys actually might be in the morning on Thursday.
