- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Friday, it is Good Friday,
- 0:17it is the 3rd of April, and here we are at the beginning of this
- 0:23Easter weekend, on this most sombre of days when we remember
- 0:29Jesus death, Jesus terrible death on that cross.
- 0:34And as we remember it, we know that he marched there with one
- 0:38thought in his mind, the thought of how much he loved you,
- 0:43friends and me, and what he was willing to do to save us.
- 0:50And so with that said, Holy Spirit, today as we remember
- 0:54this incredible moment in human history, I pray that you hold
- 0:59us, that you draw us through this story, teaching us what it
- 1:06is that you need our hearts to learn today.
- 1:13Well, friends, I'm barely ready, but I think it is time for us to
- 1:16do it. Let's read together this Good
- 1:19Friday reading as recorded in Mark Chapter 15.
- 1:34Very early in the morning, the leading priests, the elders, and
- 1:37the teachers of religious law, the entire high Council, met to
- 1:41discuss their next step. They bound Jesus and led him
- 1:45away and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.
- 1:49Pilate asked Jesus, Are you the king of the Jews?
- 1:54Jesus replied, You have said it. Then the leading priests kept
- 1:59accusing him of many crimes, and Pilate asked him, Aren't you
- 2:03going to answer them? What about all these charges
- 2:08they are bringing against you? But Jesus said nothing much to
- 2:12Pilot. Surprise.
- 2:14Now it was the governor's custom each year during the Passover
- 2:17celebration to release 1 prisoner, anyone the people
- 2:21requested. One of the prisoners at the time
- 2:23was Barabbas, A revolutionary who had committed murder in an
- 2:27uprising. The crowd went to Pilot and
- 2:29asked him to release a prisoner as usual.
- 2:33Would you like me to release to you this king of the Jews?
- 2:37Pilot asked, for he realised by now that the leading priests had
- 2:41arrested Jesus out of envy. But at this point the leading
- 2:45priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas
- 2:49instead of Jesus. Pilot asked them Then what
- 2:53should I do with this man you call the King of the Jews?
- 2:58They shouted back. Crucify him.
- 3:02Why? Pilot demanded what crimes he
- 3:06committed, but the mob roared even louder.
- 3:09Crucify him. So to pacify the crowd, Pilot
- 3:14released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a
- 3:18lead tipped whip, then returned him over to the Roman soldiers
- 3:23to be crucified. The soldiers took Jesus into the
- 3:27courtyard of the Governor's headquarters, called the
- 3:30Prayatorium, and called out the entire regiment.
- 3:34They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn
- 3:38branches into a crown and put it on his head.
- 3:41Then they saluted him and taunted Hail, King of the Jews,
- 3:46and they struck him on the head with the Reed stick, spit on
- 3:50him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.
- 3:55When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off their
- 3:59purple robe and put his own clothes on him again.
- 4:03Then they led him away to be crucified.
- 4:08A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from
- 4:12the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry
- 4:16Jesus cross. Simon was the father of
- 4:19Alexander and Rufus, and they brought Jesus to a place called
- 4:23Golgotha, which means place of the skull.
- 4:27They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.
- 4:32Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross.
- 4:35They divided his clothes and threw dice to decide who would
- 4:38get each piece. He was 9:00 in the morning when
- 4:41they crucified him. A sign announced the charge
- 4:45against him. It read The King of the Jews. 2
- 4:50revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and
- 4:54one on his left. The people passing by shouted
- 4:58abuse, shaking their heads in mockery.
- 5:00Ha, look at you now, they yelled at him.
- 5:04You said you were going to destroy the temple and rebuild
- 5:07it in three days. Well then save yourself and come
- 5:10down from the cross. The leading priests and teachers
- 5:14of religious law also mocked Jesus.
- 5:17He saved others, they scoffed. But he can't save himself.
- 5:22Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down from the cross
- 5:27so we can see it and believe him.
- 5:30Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
- 5:36At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until 3:00.
- 5:41Then at 3:00, Jesus called out with a loud voice.
- 5:45Eli Eloy le ma sabakhtani, which means my God, my God, why have
- 5:55you abandoned me? Some of the bystanders
- 5:58misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.
- 6:02One of them ran and filled the sponge with sour wine, holding
- 6:06it up to him on a Reed stick so he could drink.
- 6:08Wait, he said, let's see whether Elijah comes to take him down.
- 6:13Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last, and
- 6:19the curtain in the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two from
- 6:24top to bottom. When the Roman officer stood
- 6:28facing him, saw how he had died, he exclaimed.
- 6:32This man truly was the Son of God.
- 6:37Some women were there watching from a distance, including Mary
- 6:40Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the Younger and of Joseph
- 6:45and Salome. They had been followers of Jesus
- 6:49and had cared for him while he was in Galilee.
- 6:52Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also
- 6:55there. This all happened on Friday, the
- 7:00day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath.
- 7:03As evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went
- 7:08to Pilate and asked for Jesus body.
- 7:11Joseph was an honoured member of the High Council and he was
- 7:14waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.
- 7:16Pilate couldn't believe that Jesus was already dead, so he
- 7:20called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died yet.
- 7:24The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph
- 7:28he could have the body. Joseph bought a long sheet of
- 7:32linen cloth. Then he took Jesus body down
- 7:35from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth and laid it in a tomb
- 7:39that had been carved out of the rock.
- 7:42Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.
- 7:45Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesus
- 7:50body was laid. Father, that you would love us
- 8:03so much that you would send up your most beloved only son, and
- 8:12that he would live his life every day leading toward this
- 8:16point in time, this crucial pivot in history of humanity and
- 8:24the universe. When you humble yourself to
- 8:27death, but in doing so, you open the door to life for us, We are
- 8:35humbled by your love for us, flabbergasted at your commitment
- 8:42to us and your willingness to go to this length to save us lowly
- 8:49ants crawling around the surface of this little planet.
- 8:54And as much as we don't understand it, our Lord Jesus,
- 8:57thank you. Thank you for what you have done
- 9:00for us. Thank you for putting yourself
- 9:03through this terrible ordeal. And why?
- 9:07Because you love us. Because the greatest desire of
- 9:11your heart is to be in communion with us.
- 9:17We are so grateful. So with very grateful hearts
- 9:22overflowing with love and gratitude, we pray this and all
- 9:26these things in your name, Jesus, Amen.
