- 1:56Speaker 2: Wonderful episode of Ross chess saying and Justin Marks. Ladies
- 2:02Speaker 2: and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Racing with the Boys.
- 2:05Speaker 2: We are joined here by the track House team. Trackhouse
- 2:08Speaker 2: is scene at startup then a legacy operation in the
- 2:12Speaker 2: NASCAR world, and we are joined by Ross Chastain and
- 2:16Speaker 2: Justin Marx.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Boys give it up for the fellows.
- 2:21Speaker 2: A lure, says Ross Chastain took Justin's job in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: truck series.
- 2:28Speaker 1: So yeah, when you're putting the pieces together of this
- 2:30Speaker 1: relationship and how it took place in you guys, once
- 2:32Speaker 1: I finished this statement that will take way too long.
- 2:34Speaker 1: You're more than love with the jump in. It seems
- 2:37Speaker 1: like Ross your cat that had a bunch of things
- 2:40Speaker 1: take place that probably shouldn't have made it. You're ripping
- 2:43Speaker 1: around in some other cars that don't have the right equipment,
- 2:45Speaker 1: don't have all that stuff. You finally get a nice
- 2:47Speaker 1: little you get your foot in the door. Then all
- 2:49Speaker 1: of a sudden there's an FBI raid that takes place.
- 2:52Speaker 1: That happens you still, you keep bouncing around this individual
- 2:55Speaker 1: who's been in the business for twenty years. He finally
- 2:56Speaker 1: gives you your big shot. It's like a marriage that
- 2:58Speaker 1: happens after that. And then Justin walks in here, kicks
- 3:01Speaker 1: a door down six or seven months later and buys
- 3:04Speaker 1: out that place where you're now doing the Limbo Foundation
- 3:06Speaker 1: first dates. Hey, are we gonna love each other? We're
- 3:08Speaker 1: knocking to each other. What's gonna happen? Just he who's
- 3:10Speaker 1: got the last laugh?
- 3:11Speaker 3: Now?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Yeah, who's exactly? Because kind of how it started was
- 3:15Speaker 1: just you were racing and they did they kick you
- 3:17Speaker 1: the curb for Ross.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, he didn't take my job. I lost it. That
- 3:19Speaker 4: was on me, okay, lost it too. I lost it
- 3:22Speaker 4: and he was the one that showed up, got you,
- 3:24Speaker 4: came to my house and bought one of my seats.
- 3:26Speaker 4: I was trying to figure out what was next there
- 3:29Speaker 4: that day. I wasn't there that day. Like, the only
- 3:32Speaker 4: thing you really own are your seats, right, So like
- 3:34Speaker 4: when I lost that ride, which was tied to a
- 3:36Speaker 4: sponsors pulling out of the sport and stuff like, and
- 3:38Speaker 4: then the team had to figure out where to go.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I went and grabbed all my seats and had him
- 3:43Speaker 4: at the house. And this kid from Florida showed up
- 3:45Speaker 4: to take over that truck ride that I'd lost, and
- 3:48Speaker 4: he didn't have any seats, and they were like, well,
- 3:50Speaker 4: maybe I don't know who told you. You know, go
- 3:52Speaker 4: get Justin's. He doesn't have anything going on. So he
- 3:54Speaker 4: showed up at the front door. I was out of town.
- 3:56Speaker 4: My wife answered, he had a wat of cash he
- 3:58Speaker 4: gave her and pulled the seats out of the garage.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And they're not cheap.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Cheap I heard your pinchion pennies.
- 4:03Speaker 3: At this point, my account was dry after that.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, all I need is somewhere to sit.
- 4:08Speaker 3: They wanted like four and I was like I'm gonna
- 4:10Speaker 3: buy two. I can start with two. We'll get we'll
- 4:11Speaker 3: get going there and we'll see down the road.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So all you have in this game is essentially your chairist.
- 4:15Speaker 1: That's really all you do. They custom fit to you.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah we're not the same size.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They were under similar ability.
- 4:21Speaker 4: You were swimming in it.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Probably yeah I was smaller then.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Justin for you was it was as simple as your
- 4:26Speaker 2: wife hits you up and hey, Ross is here to
- 4:28Speaker 2: buy the seats, and you're like, okay, yeah, let him
- 4:30Speaker 2: take him on. Or was there an identity tied to
- 4:32Speaker 2: when you kind of lost that job. You have like
- 4:34Speaker 2: all your stuff and he comes knock on the door,
- 4:37Speaker 2: it's like all this new kid in town.
- 4:39Speaker 4: I don't think there was that much emotion for me
- 4:41Speaker 4: in it. I mean I was I was like already
- 4:44Speaker 4: like I wasn't really starting my career at that point.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I was kind of in this limbo of like I
- 4:48Speaker 4: was in my early thirties and I was trying to
- 4:50Speaker 4: figure out what I was gonna do with my racing career,
- 4:52Speaker 4: and I was just making things happen kind of like
- 4:54Speaker 4: one year after another. And the interesting thing you have
- 4:57Speaker 4: a go Pro sticker right there, Like go Pro sponsored
- 4:59Speaker 4: the t and they sponsored the first half of the season,
- 5:03Speaker 4: and to be able to sponsor the second half of
- 5:04Speaker 4: the season, there's like some things we want to do
- 5:06Speaker 4: in the sport. You got to help us do those
- 5:08Speaker 4: things in the sport. Ultimately didn't get done, which didn't
- 5:11Speaker 4: unlock the second half of the season. So like every year,
- 5:14Speaker 4: I kind of was going, all right, what's the next sponsor,
- 5:15Speaker 4: what's the next thing I can put together? And so
- 5:19Speaker 4: like I say that to say, like going into the season,
- 5:21Speaker 4: I knew that doing the whole season was sort of
- 5:23Speaker 4: in question anyway. So it wasn't really like a surprise
- 5:26Speaker 4: that I got out of the truck, but like there
- 5:29Speaker 4: wasn't that much emotion to it. I mean it was
- 5:31Speaker 4: it was I don't know how we was that when
- 5:32Speaker 4: we met, Yeah, the first.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Time we Yeah, so we knew Todd Bode and Mike Greenwell,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and they introduced us to Bobby daughter and then Stacy Compton.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Yeah on turn one and Bobby didn't have any stuff,
- 5:44Speaker 3: so we went to Stacey's and then we end up
- 5:45Speaker 3: going to Bobby's the next year.
- 5:46Speaker 4: But Tom Stacy owned the truck that I was driving
- 5:49Speaker 4: Stacey Comer driver. Yeah, and so that's when we got
- 5:52Speaker 4: connected through Todd, right and then uh and then and
- 5:55Speaker 4: then yeah, you called and were like, hey, can I
- 5:57Speaker 4: buy your seats?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah? And he's like yeah, I'll be at the house.
- 5:59Speaker 3: And then he wasn't there. So his wife, Aaron answers
- 6:01Speaker 3: the door and I'm just this random person, like I
- 6:05Speaker 3: have money for you. I need the seats. She's like,
- 6:09Speaker 3: Justin told you to do it, Yes, ma'am. I was scared.
- 6:12Speaker 3: She was scared, right, And I left with the seats.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So how much were the seats?
- 6:17Speaker 3: I don't know, Yeah they were. I think I paid
- 6:21Speaker 3: twelve hundred a piece for them, which is a good
- 6:24Speaker 3: deal by today's standards. Now we're in basically all carbon
- 6:28Speaker 3: seats and there are a lot more than that. You know,
- 6:31Speaker 3: those seats, I actually they got stolen, did they?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:34Speaker 3: There was some backdoor deal that happened that I wasn't
- 6:36Speaker 3: aware of, and through people that I was using, I
- 6:40Speaker 3: thought I trusted to sell them. All of a sudden
- 6:43Speaker 3: they were gone and they claimed not. They claimed that
- 6:46Speaker 3: like they didn't sell them. But then I found the
- 6:47Speaker 3: people that bought them, and I'm not. It was like
- 6:51Speaker 3: this whole thing of like, oh I just got stolen
- 6:55Speaker 3: my seat was wrong from me, like it right in
- 6:57Speaker 3: front of me, like I wasn't there, but.
- 6:59Speaker 1: They hid in playing sit and told you they're doing
- 7:01Speaker 1: one thing, yeah, giving you a huggle.
- 7:03Speaker 3: And they didn't have them when I had taken them
- 7:04Speaker 3: to their shop.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Not the only time that's happened.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And when a like Justice, you lost your job, GoPro
- 7:11Speaker 1: didn't fulfill their thing or you didn't fill the thing
- 7:12Speaker 1: and go pro. We're not going to figure that out
- 7:14Speaker 1: on this podcast. But the half the season ends for you,
- 7:18Speaker 1: where like, is there a weird feeling when Ross was
- 7:21Speaker 1: taking over that seat? Are you like a little uncomfortable
- 7:23Speaker 1: with that or is it kind of like all good
- 7:25Speaker 1: because I I don't know really what I want to do.
- 7:27Speaker 4: I was not uncomfortable with it right up until in
- 7:31Speaker 4: his first race he finished higher than I had at
- 7:33Speaker 4: any point in the season at that point, and his
- 7:35Speaker 4: first race in this truck what series is this is
- 7:38Speaker 4: in the truck series series top series. But but I
- 7:40Speaker 4: mean honestly, like I never I never really felt that way.
- 7:43Speaker 4: Maybe if I was nineteen twenty twenty one, I was
- 7:46Speaker 4: like really trying to get my career going. But at
- 7:47Speaker 4: this point I'd been racing for twelve or thirteen years.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I knew that I wasn't that guy that was going
- 7:52Speaker 4: to break through and like build this amazing career as
- 7:55Speaker 4: a driver at the top level. I really was just
- 7:56Speaker 4: trying to maintain my identity as a race car driver
- 7:59Speaker 4: and try to like go get sponsorships and keep racing
- 8:01Speaker 4: because I love doing it. But honestly, like for for
- 8:05Speaker 4: it to be an opportunity for a young guy to
- 8:08Speaker 4: get his break, to get his opportunity, like was awesome
- 8:11Speaker 4: for me, right to be replaced by a veteran or
- 8:13Speaker 4: maybe someone that doesn't care. It's just filling a seat
- 8:16Speaker 4: for a while until the team tries to figure out.
- 8:18Speaker 4: That's a different thing for a kid like Ross to
- 8:20Speaker 4: come up and like it's his first opportunity, and then
- 8:24Speaker 4: we see now like launch this amazing career. Like for me,
- 8:28Speaker 4: that was that was cool. It was cool to.
- 8:30Speaker 3: See point on kid I was eighteen, still in high school,
- 8:33Speaker 3: like still going to school and traveling off to these races.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Once we decided to do the truck races.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It's amazing how rare you planning, how rare that is,
- 8:40Speaker 1: Like it sounds like every driver that's come on here
- 8:42Speaker 1: was like, yeah, fourteen, I got my ged or whatever
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was, and I kind of just booked it over
- 8:45Speaker 1: to Charlotte. And you saw it through your guy see things.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Through well not college. I did start a semester, that's okay.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It was like, oh no, Carolina.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 2: How long did it take for you guys to then
- 9:00Speaker 2: team up?
- 9:02Speaker 3: Ten years?
- 9:03Speaker 4: Yeah, it's kind of a crazy story. I mean we.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I was twenty eleven.
- 9:10Speaker 4: That was twenty eleven, and so then I so he
- 9:13Speaker 4: he was sort of so his career, you know, started
- 9:16Speaker 4: kind of taking off, and then I was around racing.
- 9:20Speaker 4: We raced against each other years later in what's now
- 9:23Speaker 4: the NASCAR O'Reilly Parks series, so the second tier Triple
- 9:28Speaker 4: A and and so we raced against each other, and
- 9:33Speaker 4: I was racing for this team, chip Gannassi Racing. Ross
- 9:36Speaker 4: was racing for this sort of smaller, lower budget bootstrap team.
- 9:40Speaker 4: And that's when I really kind of like started paying
- 9:44Speaker 4: attention to him, because like this guy was out kicking
- 9:46Speaker 4: his coverage, Like he was racing better than this car
- 9:49Speaker 4: should have been able to do. He was really was
- 9:51Speaker 4: out racing guys in like big funded teams with a
- 9:54Speaker 4: lot of opportunity, a lot of resources and everything. And
- 9:57Speaker 4: for me, now if we just fast forward to today
- 9:59Speaker 4: and people ask me sometimes like how do you identify talent?
- 10:02Speaker 4: How do you figure out who the who the outliers are?
- 10:05Speaker 4: You know, I never look at the guys that are
- 10:07Speaker 4: sitting in the seat in like the best race cars,
- 10:10Speaker 4: the best teams. It's like, who's sitting in the seats
- 10:12Speaker 4: where they've got limitations on funding, on equipment, engineering and
- 10:16Speaker 4: are out kicking their cuverage, like are doing better than
- 10:19Speaker 4: they should. And I noticed that with him kind of
- 10:22Speaker 4: right away, so like I was off sort of doing
- 10:24Speaker 4: my own thing, figuring out what my life was going
- 10:27Speaker 4: to be, and he was racing. And then when I
- 10:30Speaker 4: got out of this Chip Genassi car full time, he
- 10:34Speaker 4: got an opportunity to get in it. After having I
- 10:37Speaker 4: don't want to tell your story for you, but after
- 10:38Speaker 4: having you know, thirty forty fifty whatever starts in this
- 10:41Speaker 4: sort of lower tier team, he got this opportunity to
- 10:44Speaker 4: drive three races for this top team that I had
- 10:47Speaker 4: been with and crashes out of the lead with one
- 10:51Speaker 4: of the stars of the sport in the first race,
- 10:53Speaker 4: wins the second race, fifteen laps longer in the third race,
- 10:56Speaker 4: he probably would have won that one too, Like talking
- 10:58Speaker 4: about pushing the button when you get the opportunity, and
- 11:00Speaker 4: so then all of a sudden it was gotta feel nice.
- 11:01Speaker 4: It was like this guy's going to be a star.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Yeah, but this whole okay, So twenty eleven, that whole,
- 11:09Speaker 1: all that takes place, I didn't mention the FBI raid
- 11:12Speaker 1: and I love you to kind of break that down
- 11:15Speaker 1: of your you get your big break yep in this sport.
- 11:18Speaker 1: And right before I think maybe a couple of races
- 11:20Speaker 1: in was was this the three races? Then all of
- 11:21Speaker 1: a sudden the FBI raids one of your main sponsors. Yeah,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and they basically go, hey, since we're such a sponsor
- 11:26Speaker 1: driven business when it comes to these cars, we're basically
- 11:29Speaker 1: shutting down this car. What was that like for you? Yeah?
- 11:32Speaker 3: So from twenty eleven to twenty eighteen, whenever I got
- 11:35Speaker 3: the three race tryout at CGR, I went to drive
- 11:39Speaker 3: for this team, which was like back then the O'Reilly
- 11:41Speaker 3: series was different where we could finish tenth a couple
- 11:44Speaker 3: of times a year, like four times a year out
- 11:45Speaker 3: of thirty three, which was good. Now a team of
- 11:48Speaker 3: that caliber really like eighteenth is good, Like that's how
- 11:51Speaker 3: much deeper the pack is. So I was in in
- 11:53Speaker 3: a good time when it appeared I was doing better
- 11:55Speaker 3: than I would with the same equipment now, but racing
- 12:00Speaker 3: justin He was in the forty two car for Ganassi,
- 12:02Speaker 3: Chip Ganassi, like you said earlier, longtime guy, I've been
- 12:04Speaker 3: in the sport for twenty years. Successful driver himself. He
- 12:09Speaker 3: might he might question the success part of his driving.
- 12:12Speaker 3: That's why I got into team owning. But yeah, it's
- 12:15Speaker 3: I got this this opportunity through an agency that was
- 12:18Speaker 3: representing the sponsor that was DC Solar, which was Spire
- 12:22Speaker 3: Sports and Entertainment. They were a group that I had
- 12:25Speaker 3: met with, never really made sense to work with them.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I didn't have the money to pay them like a
- 12:30Speaker 3: monthly retainer to help me manage my career. I just
- 12:34Speaker 3: had to do it on my own with my dad
- 12:36Speaker 3: and cousins and uncle, a couple uncles that were helping,
- 12:39Speaker 3: and we stayed in contact with that group that's the
- 12:44Speaker 3: Spire group, and I was driving a motor home for them.
- 12:46Speaker 3: I was like, look, drive the motor home to the track,
- 12:50Speaker 3: get it set up, get it set up for their sponsors,
- 12:53Speaker 3: which one of them was DC Solar, and they saw
- 12:55Speaker 3: me in my fire suit getting the tanks pump. So
- 12:58Speaker 3: if this bus was an actual camp and y'all were
- 13:00Speaker 3: taking it right, I did have like a toilet and
- 13:02Speaker 3: a tank in the bottom and you'd have to dump it.
- 13:04Speaker 3: So I was paying the Honeywagon to come and pump
- 13:07Speaker 3: out the overnight liquid. And so a year later, that
- 13:15Speaker 3: was seven, twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen, they finally put together.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Originally it's going to be ten races in eight six,
- 13:21Speaker 3: five four three, we landed on three that they gave
- 13:24Speaker 3: me the shot and that all went good. We signed
- 13:27Speaker 3: a contract to drive that following year full time in
- 13:30Speaker 3: that car, which I mean it was like the best team.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I had went from a tenth place, fifteenth place car
- 13:37Speaker 3: to the best and expected to win the championship and
- 13:39Speaker 3: all this stuff with a contract written to go on
- 13:42Speaker 3: to Cup like they had a long term contract with me.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And then yeah, in December, we did their Christmas party
- 13:50Speaker 3: out in California. Left had plans like drawing up the
- 13:54Speaker 3: final paint scheme for the following year, like they were
- 13:56Speaker 3: working on the renderings, and yeah, two days later, the
- 14:02Speaker 3: FEDS knocked their doors in and said it was a
- 14:04Speaker 3: Ponzi scheme and and they all, a lot of them
- 14:07Speaker 3: went away to prison.
- 14:08Speaker 1: No ship. Ye, so you're at a Christmas party just
- 14:11Speaker 1: a few weeks later, two days later on Santa Claus,
- 14:18Speaker 1: these people are get put behind bars.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yeah. I was still sobering up and I remember seeing
- 14:22Speaker 3: the link and then the group inspired TJ and David
- 14:26Speaker 3: called me, who we still worked with David uh, and
- 14:29Speaker 3: they're like, you need to sit down, and and yeah
- 14:32Speaker 3: it was. That was over. But Chip stuck by me,
- 14:36Speaker 3: so he on the team and he had to shut
- 14:37Speaker 3: down the Oarrailly team, but he kept me as a
- 14:40Speaker 3: reserve driver in case the two Cup guys, which at
- 14:43Speaker 3: the time was had just transitioned to Kurt Busch and
- 14:46Speaker 3: Kyle Larson and yeah and uh and yeah, both champions
- 14:52Speaker 3: of our sports. I was like the guy if they
- 14:53Speaker 3: woke up sick on race on race morning, or they
- 14:56Speaker 3: couldn't make it to a practice session because of something
- 14:58Speaker 3: I would have gotten in the car. They had all
- 15:00Speaker 3: my equipment in the hall already. I did a lot
- 15:02Speaker 3: of the sim work, so Monday morning, seven am, I
- 15:04Speaker 3: was doing prep work for them to come in on
- 15:06Speaker 3: a Tuesday and drive the simulator, and then I was
- 15:09Speaker 3: driving in back for that read fifteenth place car on
- 15:13Speaker 3: Saturday and a truck team called Nice Motorsports on Friday.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Trying to keep my career going.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Keep the juice alive a little bit. But you have
- 15:19Speaker 1: you have this big rate taking place. You sign a
- 15:22Speaker 1: deal with Aspirations, and in the contract going you're gonna
- 15:25Speaker 1: go to the Cup Series in a flash FBI raids,
- 15:28Speaker 1: that's all gone. Yeah you're a reserve. Yeah, now you're
- 15:31Speaker 1: reserve first start after the bench of what could have
- 15:33Speaker 1: been at any point where you're like, dude, maybe this
- 15:36Speaker 1: is not my cars for me? Yeah, oh yeah, go ahead.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Well yeah, I packed up basically right after it all happened.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I went to California first, tried to find them. They
- 15:43Speaker 3: were in jail, No, they weren't yet, but they were awaiting,
- 15:47Speaker 3: so they had they went dark. I mean, you couldn't.
- 15:50Speaker 3: I went found their lawyer, but he wouldn't tell me,
- 15:52Speaker 3: and he's like, I understand what you're trying. You know,
- 15:55Speaker 3: you want to see him, but they're not seeing anybody
- 15:57Speaker 3: you included. So yeah, I went to Florida over the Holidays, Christmas,
- 16:01Speaker 3: New Year's and told my family I'm done. I'm just
- 16:05Speaker 3: gonna stay here. I'll have my somebody go get my stuff.
- 16:08Speaker 3: I didn't have much in Carolina at the time. I
- 16:10Speaker 3: was still renting places I had rented for years. I
- 16:13Speaker 3: never bought anywhere because I was never stable enough to
- 16:17Speaker 3: know I was going to be there the following year. Yeah, man,
- 16:19Speaker 3: I wish I had bought a house back then, right
- 16:22Speaker 3: by something in twenty twelve, like now looking at it.
- 16:26Speaker 3: But the money wasn't there, won and the security wasn't there.
- 16:30Speaker 3: So we yeah, they finally my family a lot of
- 16:34Speaker 3: bush light pun intended like it's there's a reason we
- 16:37Speaker 3: work with him now, drank and sorrow over what we lost,
- 16:41Speaker 3: and packed up January second to head back up of
- 16:45Speaker 3: twenty nineteen and committed to then the Rally series for points.
- 16:49Speaker 3: A truck team was going to put me in the
- 16:50Speaker 3: truck for a lot of races, and then I had
- 16:53Speaker 3: a few cup races scheduled as well, in the kind
- 16:56Speaker 3: of back of the pack stuff, and yeah, it's all
- 17:00Speaker 3: it all worked out. I'm glad I went back up.
- 17:01Speaker 2: So you you were about to race for one of
- 17:04Speaker 2: the just the better teams, like you were going to
- 17:05Speaker 2: be in a phenomenal position.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Yeah, on the Saturday race is in a position to
- 17:09Speaker 3: be a champion almost immediately, right, But then that gets
- 17:11Speaker 3: taken away in your truck series 'iley and then the
- 17:14Speaker 3: reservespot and everything else, and you were thinking about just
- 17:17Speaker 3: being done. Oh I was mentally I was done once
- 17:20Speaker 3: that was taken away. I thought that was my opportunity.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Had worked for years to get that opportunity. I never
- 17:24Speaker 3: knew what it would be, but I once I was
- 17:26Speaker 3: in the sport, I thought, I can stay here in
- 17:27Speaker 3: this like midpack, and then somebody like unfortunately somebody won't
- 17:31Speaker 3: be able to race, somebody will lose a sponsor and
- 17:34Speaker 3: they'll come my way and we'll be able to do something.
- 17:36Speaker 3: I didn't think it'd be the best car like it was.
- 17:38Speaker 3: It was the best car at that time, shiplet Nick Harvey,
- 17:42Speaker 3: like the pit crew was the best, the engineers were
- 17:45Speaker 3: the best, the cars were built. It was basically like
- 17:47Speaker 3: a third Cup car for Ganassi. I mean it was
- 17:49Speaker 3: built right alongside the Cup cars. It was better than
- 17:52Speaker 3: all the other cars. So I was going to get
- 17:53Speaker 3: to run that for the entire year.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but that time, I was just say, hey, keep
- 17:56Speaker 1: your foot on the floor and.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Justin were you during this time, this timeframe that all
- 18:00Speaker 2: this is.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Going on, I was kind of floundering around, honestly, Like
- 18:05Speaker 4: at this time, I was starting to wind down my
- 18:09Speaker 4: race and career. I was racing just part time. I
- 18:12Speaker 4: was doing the road courses, not the oval tracks, just
- 18:14Speaker 4: because that's kind of my specialty. It's what I came
- 18:16Speaker 4: out of. And I was I was starting to think
- 18:20Speaker 4: about what was next. So these two stories start to
- 18:23Speaker 4: they intertwine, they drift apart, they intertwined, they drift apart.
- 18:26Speaker 4: And so as he's sort of restacking the deck a
- 18:29Speaker 4: little bit and trying to figure out what's next after
- 18:31Speaker 4: the DC Solar deal, I'm winding down my career and
- 18:34Speaker 4: I'm starting to think, you know, I for the next
- 18:37Speaker 4: phase of my life, I want to get involved on
- 18:40Speaker 4: the business side of this, Like I want to build
- 18:41Speaker 4: a great race team. I want to do something special
- 18:44Speaker 4: in the sport and step out of the seat and
- 18:47Speaker 4: give opportunities to people and try to go do great things.
- 18:50Speaker 4: So this is so as he's doing all this, I'm
- 18:53Speaker 4: starting to put the pieces, early stage pieces in place
- 18:56Speaker 4: for what would become track house in the next two
- 18:58Speaker 4: years three years.
- 19:00Speaker 2: And you just are Now, is it a situation for you,
- 19:03Speaker 2: like when you're like, I want to get in on
- 19:04Speaker 2: more of the business side. You felt like as a
- 19:06Speaker 2: driver you saw things organizationally and operationally, guys out kicking
- 19:11Speaker 2: their coverage, knowing what a good driver looks like. Are
- 19:13Speaker 2: you just getting obsessed with this idea? Like, you know,
- 19:16Speaker 2: I think I could take a shot and do something
- 19:18Speaker 2: like this because I think I think I'm I believe
- 19:20Speaker 2: I'm thinking in a certain way that a rare amount
- 19:23Speaker 2: of people do.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Yeah, that's exactly it. I mean, I'd spent now twenty
- 19:27Speaker 4: years in the sport, and I was thinking of it
- 19:30Speaker 4: from the marketing and brand standpoint, from the entertainment value standpoint.
- 19:34Speaker 4: One of the things I noticed was like, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 4: all of these teams are sort of like fun businesses
- 19:39Speaker 4: that billionaires own that have these business empires and other industries.
- 19:44Speaker 4: The teams are all you know. They named the teams
- 19:45Speaker 4: after themselves their name, you know, guys like Roger Penske
- 19:48Speaker 4: and Rick Hendrick and Joe Gibbs and like these these
- 19:51Speaker 4: big guys were their names like mean something and my
- 19:54Speaker 4: name doesn't really mean anything. And I was like, man,
- 19:56Speaker 4: what if you started a team that was rooted in
- 19:58Speaker 4: brand and storyteller, in marketing, where like you could cultivate
- 20:02Speaker 4: a following of a team and create a movement of
- 20:04Speaker 4: a team, not unlike stick and ball sports, where like
- 20:07Speaker 4: you know, and I said in the early stages of this,
- 20:09Speaker 4: like you know, if you're a fan of the New
- 20:11Speaker 4: York Yankees, like Aaron Judge comes and goes, and mari
- 20:13Speaker 4: Ano Rivera comes and goes, but you're like always a
- 20:15Speaker 4: Yankees fan, right, you build an identity with that team,
- 20:18Speaker 4: whether it's just because you live there or just you
- 20:20Speaker 4: love it, whatever it is. And like, I figured there
- 20:22Speaker 4: was an opportunity here to build a team in the
- 20:24Speaker 4: sport that used that as inspiration. And so that was
- 20:28Speaker 4: the whole thesis for it. Was, like, we can do
- 20:30Speaker 4: something that just sort of feels a little bit different,
- 20:32Speaker 4: that resonates with fans and sponsors different if it's truly
- 20:35Speaker 4: rooted in like great like amplifying great personalities, great stories,
- 20:39Speaker 4: and creating this marketing machine where we can attract like
- 20:42Speaker 4: the biggest and best sponsors of the sport. And as
- 20:44Speaker 4: you guys heard in his story, you know, one one
- 20:47Speaker 4: sponsor makes a commitment to do something and then gets
- 20:51Speaker 4: a new CMO and they don't want to spend money
- 20:53Speaker 4: in racing. Company goes out of business or the recession comes,
- 20:57Speaker 4: an FBI raid comes, and then all the opportunities like
- 21:00Speaker 4: go will go away. And and I'm like, man, if
- 21:03Speaker 4: we can build something here that's a valuable platform of
- 21:07Speaker 4: storytelling and really partners with these sponsors as not like
- 21:10Speaker 4: necessarily a racing team, but as like a growth partner,
- 21:13Speaker 4: then like we can insulate ourselves from that risk and
- 21:15Speaker 4: that exposure, which is ultimately what happened. And basically you know,
- 21:19Speaker 4: got this incredible group of sponsors that just were like, man,
- 21:23Speaker 4: it makes so much sense that there's now a race
- 21:25Speaker 4: team that is like really helping us grow our businesses.
- 21:28Speaker 4: And then that's what really gave the horsepower to track
- 21:31Speaker 4: House and allowed us the opportunity to give guys like
- 21:32Speaker 4: Ross an opportunity to go do great things.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Now, is that the pitch you're having when raising money
- 21:37Speaker 2: or partners listening, because you're obviously in a this is
- 21:40Speaker 2: like a league, right like NASCAR. You alluded to it
- 21:42Speaker 2: earlier with the names and the billionaires. It's you got
- 21:45Speaker 2: to have a shit ton of money to have a team,
- 21:47Speaker 2: and you seem to be doing it in a way
- 21:49Speaker 2: that I was saying at the beginning that's more of
- 21:50Speaker 2: like a startup version. So when you're getting in these rooms,
- 21:53Speaker 2: is that essentially the vision you're trying.
- 21:54Speaker 4: To pitch that is it's one hundred percent the thesis
- 21:56Speaker 4: for the business. And it's like I spent a year
- 21:59Speaker 4: sort of crafting this pitch or this argument, and but
- 22:02Speaker 4: like the barriers of entry in the sport are so high.
- 22:05Speaker 4: I mean, you know, starting a professional sports team is
- 22:07Speaker 4: just it's not for anybody, Like it's just really really
- 22:09Speaker 4: hard to do. So like we came in very very small,
- 22:12Speaker 4: humble beginnings, Like essentially our first year, we were one
- 22:15Speaker 4: car and we went to an existing organization and just
- 22:18Speaker 4: private labeled a team, Like we had seven people on payroll,
- 22:21Speaker 4: and we just used like their pit crews, their engineers,
- 22:24Speaker 4: their fabrication shop, and we just called our car track house.
- 22:28Speaker 4: And it was kind of just how we got started
- 22:30Speaker 4: to get our name out there and I needed to
- 22:31Speaker 4: be able to start publicly telling the story. So that
- 22:35Speaker 4: first year was like super small. We didn't spend very
- 22:37Speaker 4: much money. We basically ran the team mostly off of
- 22:41Speaker 4: the TV revenue share, Like, we didn't really have a
- 22:44Speaker 4: lot of sponsorship. But what happened was, you know, and
- 22:49Speaker 4: our charter, our franchise spot like your spot in the sport,
- 22:52Speaker 4: that you owned the franchise, We didn't. We were leasing it,
- 22:54Speaker 4: we didn't own it. I'm like, I have to figure
- 22:56Speaker 4: out how to own one of these things, but super expensive.
- 22:59Speaker 4: And I ended up having this opportunity to make an
- 23:03Speaker 4: acquisition of an existing team, Chip Ganassi Racing, that he
- 23:06Speaker 4: was racing for. I called Chip, I raced for him.
- 23:09Speaker 4: I said, look, man, I need to make a big
- 23:11Speaker 4: move here. You've been in this twenty years. You're not
- 23:13Speaker 4: coming to the track as much anymore. The DC Solar
- 23:16Speaker 4: thing is still hurting your business a little bit. This
- 23:18Speaker 4: is just a couple of years later. Would you ever
- 23:20Speaker 4: be willing to have a conversation with me about doing
- 23:23Speaker 4: something right? And then he started going, well, you know,
- 23:25Speaker 4: everything's for sale. I'm getting older, and I was like,
- 23:28Speaker 4: I was like, they're okay, there's something there right there here.
- 23:31Speaker 4: So I went and borrowed a shit ton of money,
- 23:33Speaker 4: took a bunch of debt, spent all the money that
- 23:35Speaker 4: I had like basically pulled together like everything I could
- 23:41Speaker 4: to just make this acquisition happen, and then just sort
- 23:43Speaker 4: of bet on myself for it to resonate enough that
- 23:47Speaker 4: it could start getting momentum and it could become solvent business.
- 23:50Speaker 4: And that was in the latter half of twenty twenty one,
- 23:53Speaker 4: our first year as that single car team. And then
- 23:56Speaker 4: as soon as the last race was over in twenty one,
- 23:59Speaker 4: I walked in to the shop. I went from seven
- 24:01Speaker 4: employees to one hundred and sixty overnight and stood in
- 24:05Speaker 4: front of everybody and said, this is now track House
- 24:07Speaker 4: Racing and we're going to go to the moon. So
- 24:09Speaker 4: let's go.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And are you now when you make that acquisition, are
- 24:12Speaker 2: you getting the drivers that were already on the team,
- 24:14Speaker 2: or you get the business?
- 24:15Speaker 1: And now you're thinking I got the business.
- 24:17Speaker 4: I got the business and had to try to keep
- 24:21Speaker 4: everything else was on me, so the some sponsors left,
- 24:24Speaker 4: some sponsors stayed, one of the drivers left, tried to
- 24:29Speaker 4: keep him. He used our offer his leverage to get
- 24:31Speaker 4: a better deal somewhere else. He left. Ross was in
- 24:36Speaker 4: the car at the time, just sort of on like
- 24:39Speaker 4: just a year to year thing, right, or just almost
- 24:40Speaker 4: like a race race thing that year. It was that year.
- 24:43Speaker 4: It was contract, so.
- 24:43Speaker 1: You were you were already on the team.
- 24:45Speaker 3: So I had made it to the Cup Series and
- 24:49Speaker 3: Chip had put me in the forty two car, one
- 24:50Speaker 3: of his two flagship cars. He had the one in
- 24:53Speaker 3: forty two. And yeah, I was driving the forty two,
- 24:56Speaker 3: but like on a I mean I all terms of
- 25:00Speaker 3: rookie contract, like you're just you're there and you're happy
- 25:02Speaker 3: to be there the field. And it was a one
- 25:06Speaker 3: year and we'd only gotten too the Cup Series one
- 25:09Speaker 3: year later than that original contract that involved DC Solar.
- 25:12Speaker 3: It got me there in twenty and we got there
- 25:14Speaker 3: in twenty one. But I got there with no sponsors.
- 25:16Speaker 3: So even though the sponsor left, it just took me
- 25:19Speaker 3: an extra year for Chip to all the pieces to
- 25:21Speaker 3: come together for him to put me in the car,
- 25:23Speaker 3: and they they put the sponsorship on the car. I
- 25:25Speaker 3: didn't bring anything. And then and then justin bought.
- 25:29Speaker 4: It, so like go back to the beginning here, right,
- 25:31Speaker 4: So the guy buys my seats in twenty twelve, in
- 25:34Speaker 4: eleven right like, and I lost my Truck Series ride.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Then a few years later we raced against each other
- 25:39Speaker 4: in the O'Reilly Series and then he goes as he goes,
- 25:41Speaker 4: he crashed me once. Yeah, he goes on this path
- 25:44Speaker 4: and then I'm I start this race team. Turns out
- 25:46Speaker 4: the only opportunity that I really have to create something
- 25:49Speaker 4: of lasting value here is the acquisition of Chip Canassi Racing.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Who now Ross is racing the Cup car for So
- 25:57Speaker 4: I've got these two drivers. One of them left, what
- 26:00Speaker 4: was that?
- 26:00Speaker 1: Who's that driver?
- 26:01Speaker 4: The other driver was Kurt Busch? And so he went
- 26:03Speaker 4: to go race for twenty three eleven Michael Jordan's team,
- 26:06Speaker 4: and so that seat was open. I ended up bringing
- 26:09Speaker 4: the driver that we'd had in twenty twenty one, already
- 26:11Speaker 4: under contract. Daniel Suarez put him in that car, and
- 26:14Speaker 4: then you know, Chip goes, Chip calls me, he goes,
- 26:16Speaker 4: you should you should just keep Ross. He's so cheap.
- 26:18Speaker 4: He does a pretty good job. You don't have to
- 26:20Speaker 4: pay him that much, you know. And I'm like, and
- 26:21Speaker 4: I'm like, he's like, I'm like a big fan of
- 26:24Speaker 4: this guy. I think he can be a real star.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Ross is up in Dover, Delaware doing a mid a
- 26:30Speaker 4: midweek testing session, sitting in the race car and sees
- 26:32Speaker 4: on his phone that justin Marx bought the team he's
- 26:35Speaker 4: racing for, and that's like, oh shit. And then I
- 26:38Speaker 4: got to get all my stuff together and get the
- 26:39Speaker 4: business going and all that, and I finally get to
- 26:41Speaker 4: do like one of the greatest things in my track
- 26:44Speaker 4: house life, which is called Ross, and say, I want
- 26:47Speaker 4: you to be the driver for us going forward?
- 26:49Speaker 1: The driver.
- 26:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I want you to stay in the car.
- 26:53Speaker 4: I want you to You're not gonna lose your job.
- 26:55Speaker 4: I want you to be a part of this track
- 26:56Speaker 4: house thing.
- 26:57Speaker 1: And Ross. What's going through your mind when you when
- 26:59Speaker 1: you're sitting there this emulator and you see the information
- 27:01Speaker 1: that this guy Chip who kind of bet on you
- 27:04Speaker 1: all the things happen with the FBI, He's like, hey,
- 27:06Speaker 1: just stick around, you're and get your shot. You finally
- 27:07Speaker 1: get your shot all this shit that you've been through.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You truck through the mud, and now you're essentially in
- 27:12Speaker 1: your brain you're probably like, I gotta truck do more
- 27:14Speaker 1: fucking mud and get this guy to like me.
- 27:16Speaker 3: So it was coming off of a double header. For
- 27:18Speaker 3: a few years we did two Cup races in one weekend.
- 27:21Speaker 3: We did it up in Pocono. We'd run a Cup
- 27:22Speaker 3: race on Saturday, and a cup race on Sunday, which
- 27:24Speaker 3: is not normal. We don't do that anymore. And I
- 27:27Speaker 3: wrecked both cars. In the forty two, I was driving
- 27:31Speaker 3: a bright red car and I wrecked both of them.
- 27:35Speaker 3: And we drove down with my crew chief and engine
- 27:38Speaker 3: tuner Phil and Harry Sunday night to Dover and Chevy
- 27:42Speaker 3: has their new Gen seven, which is the car we're
- 27:45Speaker 3: going to race in twenty twenty two moving forward. It's
- 27:47Speaker 3: a revolutionary new car. It changes the way the teams operate.
- 27:52Speaker 3: And this is my first time getting to drive it
- 27:55Speaker 3: on an oval. So get there, drive it half a
- 27:58Speaker 3: day Monday, and I think the I think it all
- 28:00Speaker 3: happened on Tuesday. Y'all went to the Hall of Fame.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Yeah, on Tuesday.
- 28:04Speaker 3: So Tuesday morning, I'm in and out of the car.
- 28:06Speaker 3: They're making changes and this is like we go make
- 28:09Speaker 3: some runs and we're just learning about this car. And
- 28:12Speaker 3: I look down. I'm sitting at a little plastic folding
- 28:14Speaker 3: table with all the other engineers and we're talking, and
- 28:17Speaker 3: got my laptop up and I'm jotting some notes down,
- 28:19Speaker 3: just trying to keep track of how the day's going.
- 28:21Speaker 3: And my phone vibrates and I just look over and
- 28:23Speaker 3: it just says Justin bought chips. Well that in itself
- 28:27Speaker 3: that wouldn't really mean much to most people, but I
- 28:30Speaker 3: had no inkling. It was happening like zero and that
- 28:33Speaker 3: Tuesday morning, at whatever time, I knew exactly what those
- 28:36Speaker 3: words meant. Three words in my stomach, Like I didn't
- 28:40Speaker 3: know if it was coming out my throat or if
- 28:42Speaker 3: I was gonna like throw up or what.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I had no street cred at this point, like I
- 28:46Speaker 4: had never owned a team. I had this like one
- 28:48Speaker 4: little private label team that we were running twenty third,
- 28:51Speaker 4: twenty fifth every weekend. There was no indication that this
- 28:55Speaker 4: was going to be good for anybody. Yeah you know
- 28:57Speaker 4: what I mean?
- 28:58Speaker 3: Yeh. And Chevy didn't even know it. Like the execs there,
- 29:02Speaker 3: the higher brass of the competition side. We're there and
- 29:08Speaker 3: Keith Roden was looking across from me. He was running
- 29:10Speaker 3: the wheel force car and he's a high up guy
- 29:13Speaker 3: that's been at different teams. He runs Chevy now on
- 29:17Speaker 3: our GM Chevy Cup side, and he was running that
- 29:19Speaker 3: car that day and he looks over, he goes, what's
- 29:21Speaker 3: wrong with you? Are you ready to get back in?
- 29:23Speaker 3: And I was like nope, I need a minute. I
- 29:26Speaker 3: need ten minutes. And I walked off and called David
- 29:28Speaker 3: and they're walking me through it. They're like, yep, they're
- 29:31Speaker 3: headed to the Hall of Fame now, like this is happening,
- 29:34Speaker 3: Like it's like we don't know what this means, but
- 29:38Speaker 3: you got to get back in the car. But take
- 29:39Speaker 3: ten minutes, walk around, like catch your breath, like I'm
- 29:42Speaker 3: ready to drink some beer, like I'm ready to be
- 29:44Speaker 3: done working for the day. And I sent a text
- 29:46Speaker 3: to Justin about ten minutes later. They just said I
- 29:48Speaker 3: want this. And I was just like, I'm just firing
- 29:51Speaker 3: this in there. I knew Justin well enough, Yeah, I
- 29:54Speaker 3: knew that's how we could communicate, just a simple text.
- 29:56Speaker 3: And I just said I want this. And before you
- 29:58Speaker 3: even went on the stage, he text back something about,
- 30:00Speaker 3: I know, give me some time. A lot's happening right now.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Which is not the most text to get to have
- 30:08Speaker 1: a reassurance with your job.
- 30:10Speaker 4: We'd close the deal, you know, four days before that,
- 30:16Speaker 4: like the friday before that, we closed the deal, and
- 30:18Speaker 4: we're like, okay, now that we're closed, you're you're owning
- 30:20Speaker 4: a team. Here's the date you take over. We have
- 30:24Speaker 4: to go, and we have to just get it out there.
- 30:26Speaker 4: And so like I hadn't spent any time. All I'd
- 30:28Speaker 4: been working on is just trying to get this deal closed.
- 30:30Speaker 4: I hadn't spent any time on drivers, on sponsors, on employees,
- 30:34Speaker 4: any of that. I just was like, I'm just when
- 30:36Speaker 4: it's done, then I'm just gonna figure it out. And
- 30:39Speaker 4: like my hair stood up a little bit when you
- 30:41Speaker 4: said that, because like what a moment, knowing that he
- 30:43Speaker 4: was up in Delaware, you know, and just got hit
- 30:46Speaker 4: with this thing, not knowing what any of it means,
- 30:48Speaker 4: and then just texting me I want this, and I
- 30:51Speaker 4: was like I want you, but you gotta just freaking wait,
- 30:54Speaker 4: like because I'm like I am out over my skis
- 30:57Speaker 4: right now, scared.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, you put your mask on first.
- 31:01Speaker 4: Yeah that's exactly right. Yeah, I'm just I'm just like
- 31:03Speaker 4: just just what he said, like, I got it. Let
- 31:05Speaker 4: me just get through today. I got a bunch to
- 31:07Speaker 4: figure out. We'll be in touch and then and then
- 31:09Speaker 4: I think when I you know, a week or two
- 31:11Speaker 4: later or whenever it was, you know, I told him
- 31:13Speaker 4: like it was it was always you, it was always
- 31:14Speaker 4: going to be you, Like it was never going to
- 31:16Speaker 4: be anything different, And I'm sorry you had to just
- 31:19Speaker 4: wait for a few weeks, but like, I'm just trying
- 31:21Speaker 4: to get I was going to say two.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Weeks, like you said a texting, I want this like
- 31:25Speaker 1: you're but you're stamping. I want to be a part
- 31:26Speaker 1: of this racing. He goes, Hey, we're going through a
- 31:28Speaker 1: lot right now. Whatever. The text is back and you
- 31:30Speaker 1: had to wait multiple months.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Now are you thinking you're going to get is all
- 31:35Speaker 2: the emotion of throwing up and a stomach coming up
- 31:38Speaker 2: through your throat, Is that like thinking I'm going to
- 31:41Speaker 2: get replaced because you're thinking about the couple recks you
- 31:44Speaker 2: just had, like the stuff that you've put on film,
- 31:47Speaker 2: you know, justin buys your guys's team. Are you thinking
- 31:51Speaker 2: like I'm somebody who's probably going to get replaced.
- 31:54Speaker 3: I'm out, Yeah, it's over again.
- 31:57Speaker 1: I want this.
- 31:58Speaker 3: It's over again. So yeah, that's what I thought, which
- 32:01Speaker 3: isn't the right way to think about it because I
- 32:02Speaker 3: had no idea. I didn't know, but I just that's
- 32:05Speaker 3: what naturally hit me.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Yeah, But that's similar in football, where it's like if
- 32:07Speaker 1: a new head coach comes in, even the guys that
- 32:09Speaker 1: have been on that team for a long time. There's
- 32:12Speaker 1: they're like, I hope this guy wants my kind of
- 32:15Speaker 1: player around. Yeah, totally different when there's an owner as well.
- 32:17Speaker 1: If you're coming off a couple of bad games.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Right, yeah, I had a couple of bad games.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, bad season. So what is your in the
- 32:25Speaker 1: time between you and justin talking? Are you reaching out
- 32:28Speaker 1: to agents? Are you starting to go over to their teams?
- 32:29Speaker 1: Be like, yeah, it look pretty good. He use a
- 32:31Speaker 1: new driver probably right, yeah? Goo, something going on over there?
- 32:33Speaker 1: Like are you starting to put feelers out about where
- 32:35Speaker 1: you can possibly land if it doesn't work out with Trackhouse? Not? No,
- 32:39Speaker 1: you're just sitting drinking some He's just going to be
- 32:43Speaker 1: paralysis by analysis. You're like, oh shit, I'm just gonna
- 32:47Speaker 1: sit here for ten weeks and hopefully he calls up.
- 32:50Speaker 3: So my agent, which is kind of weird to say
- 32:53Speaker 3: it about David, but he is. He's my agent on record,
- 32:57Speaker 3: David Ericson. He works now for mm I formerly Spire,
- 32:59Speaker 3: who we both worked with. They have a relationship. They
- 33:03Speaker 3: knew each other really before Proby I came into all this.
- 33:06Speaker 3: I guess or no, I guess we met each other first.
- 33:09Speaker 3: But so anyway, David is like he's there to do
- 33:12Speaker 3: the dirty work of agency work right and get contracts
- 33:15Speaker 3: done and get my number is high. Get away from
- 33:19Speaker 3: Chip's mindset of Ross works for cheap. But we were
- 33:21Speaker 3: happy to take that first deal. Okay, now we've got
- 33:24Speaker 3: a body of work of a year. Let's so David
- 33:26Speaker 3: and you went to work on all the details and yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 4: I think pretty quickly I told him like this, this
- 33:35Speaker 4: is the direction I want to go, Like I want
- 33:37Speaker 4: Ross in this car, I want him to be a
- 33:39Speaker 4: part of the future of this team. I think the
- 33:41Speaker 4: whole time like it was, it was a very turbulent
- 33:45Speaker 4: time for a lot of people because it was super
- 33:47Speaker 4: scary for a lot of people because, like I said,
- 33:49Speaker 4: like there was I hadn't done anything on the business
- 33:52Speaker 4: side in the sports. There was no indication that I
- 33:54Speaker 4: knew anything about what I was doing. People didn't know
- 33:57Speaker 4: if I was going to just you know, got the
- 34:00Speaker 4: team and run it cheap. Because I had no sponsors.
- 34:03Speaker 4: You know, you.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Had a lot to prove.
- 34:04Speaker 2: It's not like if a name comes across Jeff Gordon
- 34:07Speaker 2: buys the team, like there's just this idea or because
- 34:10Speaker 2: it's going.
- 34:10Speaker 4: To be success or something you know, or like you
- 34:12Speaker 4: know some you know, whoever, whoever it might be. I
- 34:15Speaker 4: mean it was like, remember I basically I was a
- 34:17Speaker 4: race car driver, like sixteen months before this, like a
- 34:19Speaker 4: part time race car driver that no one could ever
- 34:22Speaker 4: say what my next day was going to look like
- 34:24Speaker 4: or what my future was going to look like. So
- 34:26Speaker 4: there was a lot of question marks. But I went
- 34:27Speaker 4: to work with David and was like, man, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 4: I think there's a lot of work to be done here.
- 34:33Speaker 4: But I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think
- 34:34Speaker 4: we could win, if we could build something here that
- 34:37Speaker 4: could be really successful. And and then our first year
- 34:42Speaker 4: together in twenty twenty two was a magical year, I
- 34:45Speaker 4: mean it, and it really just proved out that like
- 34:49Speaker 4: my belief in him, his belief in himself, his commitment
- 34:52Speaker 4: to my vision. When we finally could sit down and
- 34:54Speaker 4: I'm like, this is how we're going to be successful.
- 34:56Speaker 4: This is how I think about this new car, this
- 34:58Speaker 4: is how I think about the new paradigm of the sport.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Like this, I think that we can go do something
- 35:03Speaker 4: that no one is expecting. And we won two of
- 35:05Speaker 4: the first ten races and finished second in the championship,
- 35:08Speaker 4: two hundred and thirty five feet short of being the
- 35:10Speaker 4: champion that year in the Cup Series two hundred and
- 35:13Speaker 4: thirty five feet in the last race short of being
- 35:15Speaker 4: the champion of the Cup Series that year the first year.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Justin for you knowing that Ross is like your first driver,
- 35:22Speaker 2: How did you know it was him that you wanted?
- 35:26Speaker 4: I think the story that we've told, I mean, I
- 35:28Speaker 4: just think all the way back from when he got
- 35:30Speaker 4: in the truck that I was sure couldn't finish better
- 35:34Speaker 4: than fifteenth in a race and go round eighth in
- 35:36Speaker 4: it is first time or whatever it was, and him
- 35:39Speaker 4: overachieving in those red cars in the Ol'reilly Series those
- 35:42Speaker 4: three races he got in really good equipment and was
- 35:44Speaker 4: in position to win all three of them first time.
- 35:47Speaker 4: That story and paying attention to that story and going
- 35:50Speaker 4: like there is a there is a superstar here. He
- 35:55Speaker 4: just needs the security, He needs the commitment from ownership
- 35:58Speaker 4: that he's the guy. He needs some to build a
- 36:00Speaker 4: team around him and believe in him, give him security
- 36:03Speaker 4: in his job and let him go drive good race
- 36:05Speaker 4: cars the best that he can without worrying about FBI
- 36:09Speaker 4: raids or losing jobs or like one year contract or
- 36:13Speaker 4: you know, reserve positions. Just be the be the guy,
- 36:16Speaker 4: be the race car driver. Just the belief that if
- 36:21Speaker 4: he's in that position, he can carry our company to
- 36:23Speaker 4: great things, which he did.
- 36:25Speaker 1: That's unbelievable, dude, that's fucking sick.
- 36:29Speaker 3: It was my first contract that was more than one year,
- 36:31Speaker 3: which a lot of the years there were no contracts.
- 36:33Speaker 3: It was like a text, a handshake, an email early on.
- 36:37Speaker 3: And then I finally got to where like had a
- 36:39Speaker 3: one year contract with Chip every year, or one year
- 36:42Speaker 3: for the Cup car. And then yeah, when Justin was like,
- 36:45Speaker 3: we willing to do two years with really no sponsors either.
- 36:48Speaker 3: We started with ten races. We had Health for six
- 36:51Speaker 3: and the Moose for four races out of thirty thirty eight.
- 36:56Speaker 3: And we missed our first race, the clash Out in LA.
- 36:59Speaker 3: We missed. It was like an exhibition race and we
- 37:01Speaker 3: missed it. We didn't even run the feature.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Why not? How does that slow? Oh? You just weren't
- 37:06Speaker 1: able to get any were able to qualify?
- 37:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I just wasn't fast enough. We went to the
- 37:10Speaker 3: to the five hundred that year. In twenty two, finished
- 37:12Speaker 3: last uh wrecked at California Big and practice and spun
- 37:18Speaker 3: out in the race. Remember we were in Phoenix, like
- 37:20Speaker 3: race four of the year, and he's so he's I
- 37:23Speaker 3: want to I don't want to say this wrong. You've hiked,
- 37:25Speaker 3: you've you've climbed mountain. Yeah, you climbed mountains? Yeah, what's
- 37:30Speaker 3: your mountains that I just want to say. He can
- 37:32Speaker 3: tell you about climbing. He took me for this walk
- 37:35Speaker 3: and he's like showing me how like the rate that
- 37:38Speaker 3: you would climb if you were in truly like ascend
- 37:40Speaker 3: a mountain. Because I'm thinking, oh, you just start walking and.
- 37:43Speaker 1: You en.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Here's the pace. But he took that like two hours.
- 37:47Speaker 3: I remember to like try to like get me to
- 37:49Speaker 3: like finish a race because I had crashed, crash crashed
- 37:52Speaker 3: and early missed the race in LA and he's like,
- 37:55Speaker 3: you just got to finish. And then we went and
- 37:58Speaker 3: finished like second, third, fourth.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Yeah. It was like, don't don't think about what, don't
- 38:02Speaker 4: try to win, don't try to win. At this point,
- 38:05Speaker 4: he's thirty fourth in the points, and I mean like
- 38:07Speaker 4: in last place in the points and we're three or
- 38:09Speaker 4: four races in and it's starting to get frustrating, and
- 38:14Speaker 4: you know, it's Like my message was like, don't try
- 38:16Speaker 4: to win. Let's just let's believe in what we're doing
- 38:19Speaker 4: here and just and just try to execute and do
- 38:21Speaker 4: every week the right way. Just focus on the work
- 38:24Speaker 4: that we have to do. Let's finish the races, run
- 38:27Speaker 4: a good strategy, get on off pit road, not make
- 38:30Speaker 4: bad decisions, and it's all going to come together. And
- 38:33Speaker 4: then it just started coming together, and there was a
- 38:34Speaker 4: fifth place finish and then a third place finish, and
- 38:37Speaker 4: then we go to Circuit the Americas in Austin, Texas,
- 38:39Speaker 4: and he carries us to our first win as an organization.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Now, how hard is it for you to be four
- 38:43Speaker 1: races into the first time, basically spending all of your
- 38:46Speaker 1: money in order to become like a legitimate person in
- 38:49Speaker 1: this And then the first four races one you don't
- 38:52Speaker 1: qualify for exhibition match, You spin out, you crash all things.
- 38:55Speaker 1: How are you keeping such a levelhead in this process?
- 38:58Speaker 4: I think, just knowing how how hard this thing is,
- 39:04Speaker 4: And like that I had just stepped onto the stage
- 39:07Speaker 4: with the with the most legendary owners in the history
- 39:11Speaker 4: of this sport, operating at a level that I had
- 39:14Speaker 4: only just just touched a little bit in my in
- 39:17Speaker 4: my career and just knowing what's ahead of me. It's like,
- 39:20Speaker 4: you know, I took the long view on it, right,
- 39:23Speaker 4: just like just just believe, like this is going to
- 39:25Speaker 4: take some This is going to take some time. I
- 39:27Speaker 4: have to learn. You have to learn. Everybody has to learn,
- 39:30Speaker 4: like what it's going to take to be successful in this.
- 39:34Speaker 4: And I think just a real belief, a deep belief
- 39:37Speaker 4: that like everybody that's a part of this is really
- 39:39Speaker 4: really good at what they do. Everybody that's a part
- 39:42Speaker 4: of this can achieve everything that they've wanted to achieve
- 39:45Speaker 4: in their careers. We got to let's just focus on
- 39:49Speaker 4: the work, just the execution and the work, and just
- 39:51Speaker 4: knowing that like if you just do a good job
- 39:54Speaker 4: and put the right the right like mojo out into
- 39:58Speaker 4: the ether, like just the attitude and you know, like
- 40:01Speaker 4: have gratitude and be excited and inspired every time that
- 40:06Speaker 4: you go to have an opportunity to do this work,
- 40:08Speaker 4: that the universe is gonna reward you. Right. Not to
- 40:10Speaker 4: get all woo wu, but like that's literally how it's
- 40:12Speaker 4: really how I think. It's like, you know, just focus
- 40:15Speaker 4: on the process and just believe, just believe that you can.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Sounds like it sounds like ted stuff.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I say, now used an analogy of climbing a
- 40:23Speaker 2: mountain or you took him back?
- 40:25Speaker 4: No, no, we want we went on Aye, Like, yeah, we're
- 40:30Speaker 4: not racing to day, We're gonna take a different Yeah,
- 40:33Speaker 4: there's a whole nother thing. But like I have this
- 40:35Speaker 4: passion in my life for the mountains I've done like
- 40:37Speaker 4: high altitude mountaineering and like South America, Nepal and all
- 40:39Speaker 4: this stuff. And like we we were in Phoenix, and
- 40:42Speaker 4: so we went hiking up in the mountains outside of Phoenix,
- 40:45Speaker 4: and and when we were walking, it was like the
- 40:48Speaker 4: idea of talking about climbing a mountain was like you
- 40:51Speaker 4: don't you don't succeed in the high mountains, trying to
- 40:55Speaker 4: go fast, trying to like be you know over like
- 41:03Speaker 4: I guess over inspired and just try to like do
- 41:06Speaker 4: too much. It's just it's like one step in front
- 41:08Speaker 4: of the other, and you're never like thinking about the
- 41:10Speaker 4: context of the summit. You're thinking about the journey, right,
- 41:14Speaker 4: Like you're on this mountain for three weeks and when
- 41:16Speaker 4: you stand on the summit, you're there for ten minutes.
- 41:19Speaker 4: So like it has to be about the three weeks,
- 41:21Speaker 4: not the ten minutes. And that's kind of like what
- 41:22Speaker 4: I was what I was talking about when we were
- 41:24Speaker 4: walking in the mountains. It's sort of like these small steps,
- 41:28Speaker 4: just spending two days going to Camp one and then
- 41:30Speaker 4: two days going to Camp two. Like it's about laying
- 41:33Speaker 4: this foundation of like consistency, efficiency, the work, all that
- 41:37Speaker 4: kind of stuff, and then one day you're gonna wake
- 41:39Speaker 4: up and you're gonna be on the summit because of
- 41:41Speaker 4: all that work that you did.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 41:43Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
- 41:44Speaker 1: Yeah, Hell, it makes a lot of sense.
- 41:45Speaker 4: So all of a sudden, like we didn't go to
- 41:47Speaker 4: the circuit of the America's in Austin, Texas and go
- 41:50Speaker 4: we're gonna go try to win this race. I don't
- 41:52Speaker 4: want to put words in your.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Mouth, but like, but but.
- 41:55Speaker 4: Like the thing is is that we went to Austin
- 41:57Speaker 4: because we were in the way that that race ended up,
- 42:00Speaker 4: is like we were focused on executing well in that race,
- 42:03Speaker 4: preparing well, practicing well, qualifying well, making good decisions on
- 42:06Speaker 4: the race track, and then all of a sudden, there's
- 42:09Speaker 4: three laps to go and Ross is in the lead
- 42:11Speaker 4: of the race, and it just you just get delivered
- 42:14Speaker 4: that moment.
- 42:14Speaker 1: Yeah, right right, because you have the three laps is
- 42:17Speaker 1: what four hundred laps or however many laps you can
- 42:19Speaker 1: go three our race, three hour race. You know you're
- 42:21Speaker 1: focusing those last roek. Oh shit, we got.
- 42:23Speaker 4: All of a sudden we want to be Yeah, we
- 42:24Speaker 4: can actually went now with two laps to go, now
- 42:27Speaker 4: you can go try to win the race.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Yeah. And so you're taking these small incremental steps. You're
- 42:31Speaker 1: you're having this sense a moment on I'm assuming Camelback
- 42:34Speaker 1: Mountains somewhere in Arizona, taking taking steps like, hey, just
- 42:37Speaker 1: focus in the process, lap by lap. When does the
- 42:40Speaker 1: hail melon take place? Is that before or after this
- 42:43Speaker 1: this big Camelback Mountain walk.
- 42:46Speaker 3: The end of that year. The end of that was
- 42:47Speaker 3: in April in Phoenix, and then to get the Phoenix
- 42:51Speaker 3: in the fall, the hail melon happened in like the
- 42:54Speaker 3: end of October Halloween.
- 42:55Speaker 1: Basically, Yeah, you're in the middle of spooked over dude.
- 42:57Speaker 1: You're like, I'm just gonna put my foot at the
- 42:58Speaker 1: floor until I see God the checkered flav By the way,
- 43:01Speaker 1: that's not you. Hey, First off, that pisses me off
- 43:05Speaker 1: because we watched a video how many times, much like
- 43:07Speaker 1: three times. Yeah, And I've seen that video before and
- 43:10Speaker 1: I just remember thinking, like, this is the most badass ship.
- 43:13Speaker 1: What a quote to half and that's not you.
- 43:16Speaker 4: But you know, the thing is, yeah, somebody like spliced
- 43:19Speaker 4: that and made of.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Ideas Shawna saying the X ray of him is not
- 43:22Speaker 1: his X ray.
- 43:23Speaker 4: But here's the thing, here's the thing. The real radio
- 43:26Speaker 4: communication was better than that in my opinion.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Real They didn't need.
- 43:30Speaker 4: To fake it because the thing is is, this is
- 43:32Speaker 4: the second to last race of the year, and we
- 43:35Speaker 4: had this, you know, at the time, had this playoff
- 43:37Speaker 4: championship where it was ten races, but every three races
- 43:40Speaker 4: they would reduce the playoff field and the second to
- 43:42Speaker 4: last race they would take the top four eligible finishers
- 43:45Speaker 4: of that race and those four would race for the
- 43:47Speaker 4: championship the final race in Phoenix a week later. So
- 43:50Speaker 4: we're sitting here with ten laps to go, five laps
- 43:53Speaker 4: to go, three laps to go. Ross is in eighth,
- 43:55Speaker 4: ninth place, and he gets on the radio and asks
- 43:57Speaker 4: his crew chief. He goes like, how many do I need?
- 44:00Speaker 4: How many guys do I need to pass? And at
- 44:01Speaker 4: this point he goes, you know you need two or
- 44:03Speaker 4: I need three, whatever the number is you need to
- 44:05Speaker 4: or you need three. This is at the white flag,
- 44:07Speaker 4: and that third car in front of him that he
- 44:09Speaker 4: needs to pass is one hundred yards in front of him.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Like it's not gonna happen, right, So he comes off
- 44:13Speaker 4: turned four and goes how many do I need? You
- 44:15Speaker 4: need three? You need three? And the next thing you know,
- 44:18Speaker 4: we're all watching this thing unfold on the television screens
- 44:22Speaker 4: in the pits, not registering what's happening, and he makes
- 44:25Speaker 4: this decision down the back straight away like I'm gonna
- 44:28Speaker 4: get my three. I'm gonna do it in a way
- 44:31Speaker 4: that's never It's.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Almost like it's eerily quiet. He's just asking how many
- 44:34Speaker 1: numbers he needs, and all of a sudden, you just
- 44:36Speaker 1: make a decision to ride this thing against the wall
- 44:38Speaker 1: at one hundred and fifty miles an hour.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I had never thought about it before, Like.
- 44:43Speaker 1: You've never done it before and never thought that was
- 44:45Speaker 1: even possible.
- 44:46Speaker 3: After I did it, then when you asked me my answermen,
- 44:51Speaker 3: I got out of the car. And it still is today.
- 44:52Speaker 3: I remember doing it as a kid. We had a
- 44:54Speaker 3: Nintendo GameCube, so I was a kid that hell y.
- 44:57Speaker 3: I told my parents that GameCube was going to be
- 44:59Speaker 3: bigger than Playsta. I was a little wrong on that,
- 45:02Speaker 3: like that Nintendo is gonna be like yeah, no, not
- 45:05Speaker 3: the case.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:06Speaker 3: My little brother Chad, he's six years younger than me,
- 45:09Speaker 3: and I can remember his kids us racing NASCAR two
- 45:12Speaker 3: thousand and five. Kevin Harvick was on the cover and we, uh, yeah,
- 45:17Speaker 3: we would like turn around and go backwards and crash
- 45:18Speaker 3: each other and have fun playing. And that was the
- 45:20Speaker 3: last time. None of the simulators ever did it. I
- 45:23Speaker 3: never asked an engineer. I definitely never asked justin. I
- 45:25Speaker 3: never asked anybody. I never thought about it until off
- 45:29Speaker 3: of turn four, starting to start the white flag. McReynolds
- 45:33Speaker 3: are my spotter, Brandon McReynolds driver himself now on the
- 45:36Speaker 3: roof for us. He said, white flag need to here,
- 45:39Speaker 3: and in that moment, I know right where I was.
- 45:40Speaker 3: I know I could see the white flag waving, I
- 45:42Speaker 3: could see the grand stands, the cars in front of me,
- 45:45Speaker 3: and to run the wall popped in.
- 45:46Speaker 2: My head say that's just running the wall in a
- 45:50Speaker 2: video game back in oh five.
- 45:51Speaker 3: No, no, I didn't even think about the video game.
- 45:53Speaker 3: I just thought, with that car in twenty two, what's
- 45:56Speaker 3: the first year we'd ran it. I'd hit the wall
- 45:58Speaker 3: a couple of times throughout the year, well documented a
- 46:00Speaker 3: lot at the beginning of the year, but we had
- 46:02Speaker 3: scraped the wall and it wouldn't slow down. We've done
- 46:04Speaker 3: a Homestead test and a couple of times I got
- 46:07Speaker 3: the right rear tire against the wall and the wheel
- 46:11Speaker 3: actually like I got in the gas against the wall
- 46:13Speaker 3: and it actually drove me around the corner a little bit,
- 46:15Speaker 3: and I was like, that's weird. We finished second at
- 46:18Speaker 3: Homestead that year touching the wall just very not on purpose,
- 46:21Speaker 3: but just you're just packing air. You're trying to go
- 46:25Speaker 3: right up next to the wall. And Yeah, for some reason,
- 46:27Speaker 3: my mind thought, if you just go wide open you
- 46:30Speaker 3: never left, it might work. I'd seen Kyle Larson do
- 46:33Speaker 3: it the previous year in the Southern five hundred trying
- 46:36Speaker 3: to pass a Denny on the last slap. I'd watched
- 46:39Speaker 3: Sheldon Creed do it at Darlington in the rally car,
- 46:43Speaker 3: and yeah, I just thought there would be nobody in
- 46:45Speaker 3: front of me. They're all going to run the bottom
- 46:46Speaker 3: and I'll go around the outside.
- 46:48Speaker 1: That's iconic. That is iconic, and it gets you into
- 46:51Speaker 1: the final four, right, and that's the last race. Is
- 46:54Speaker 1: the best thing.
- 46:54Speaker 4: I got him in. It got him in. So he goes,
- 46:56Speaker 4: so yeah, So Brandon mcrenold's goes, white flag, need to
- 46:59Speaker 4: Ross gets on the radio and says, got to get him,
- 47:02Speaker 4: and crew chief goes, yeah, you gotta get him. And
- 47:04Speaker 4: the next thing that was.
- 47:08Speaker 1: State situation.
- 47:09Speaker 3: I'm hitting the wall. I can't see anything. It's all blurry.
- 47:12Speaker 3: I feel like I'm gonna flip over. The left front
- 47:14Speaker 3: tire was actually off the ground going through the corners.
- 47:16Speaker 3: A couple of still shots of it enough, which is
- 47:18Speaker 3: not normal. And mcgrenold's keys up, keep keep coming, man,
- 47:22Speaker 3: come on, keep coming, Hang on to it.
- 47:24Speaker 4: Fastest lap ever turned in the history of Martinsville Speedway.
- 47:29Speaker 4: It went from tenth to fifth in the last corner
- 47:32Speaker 4: of the last lap. He beat who at the time
- 47:36Speaker 4: was sort of an arch nemesis of his during the
- 47:39Speaker 4: season that he'd had a lot of run ins. He beat,
- 47:42Speaker 4: beat him, beat him, Denny Hamlin beat him right at
- 47:44Speaker 4: the stripe to put Denny Hamlin out of the championship
- 47:46Speaker 4: contention and put Ross in. And it was the most
- 47:50Speaker 4: the pretty confident, saying it was the most viral moment
- 47:52Speaker 4: in the history of the sport.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I had to be I still think it is now.
- 47:56Speaker 1: In the columns you said that it's your line is
- 47:58Speaker 1: not in there spliced in the But are the other compsant?
- 48:01Speaker 1: The other drivers? Those those are real when they're like,
- 48:04Speaker 1: oh my god, witness is truly witnessing history in this
- 48:06Speaker 1: one move taking place when it meant more than anything
- 48:09Speaker 1: to you in this team, right, I mean you.
- 48:11Speaker 2: Talk about a brand on storytelling, like there's a there's
- 48:13Speaker 2: a Hollywood movie in there based on that year you're
- 48:16Speaker 2: not lying with going to the mountain and ship and
- 48:18Speaker 2: then the final race to get in like yeah there's
- 48:20Speaker 2: a movie in there's something.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Jack will get on it for us. Yeah yeah,
- 48:23Speaker 1: we have to produce that. They don't get omaha on
- 48:25Speaker 1: that and start ripping. It is suggested for you to
- 48:29Speaker 1: buy a team and in one year, not know, some
- 48:33Speaker 1: sponsors are leaving, some are staying. You got people trying
- 48:36Speaker 1: trying to go, probably asking for more money. You have
- 48:38Speaker 1: four races where you don't even finish the race as
- 48:41Speaker 1: the owner, and then you get into this position like
- 48:44Speaker 1: what was that like for you? Your vantage point. I'm sure
- 48:47Speaker 1: the sponsors have to come rolling in right now.
- 48:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a great question. I mean I think that
- 48:51Speaker 4: my overwhelming response or emotion in this was this is
- 48:57Speaker 4: what happens when you have a group of people that
- 48:59Speaker 4: just believe even themselves and are all united and galvanized
- 49:02Speaker 4: in a mission, and that that's really it. For me
- 49:05Speaker 4: was like this, it's it feels like magic. And because
- 49:10Speaker 4: everybody was so invested in this journey of track House
- 49:13Speaker 4: and in that moment, I think whether it was conscious
- 49:16Speaker 4: or unconscious for Ross, like the whole season had been
- 49:20Speaker 4: building up to that moment and there was such an
- 49:22Speaker 4: opportunity in front of us, and it was like, you know,
- 49:25Speaker 4: I have to assume it's these These are the magical
- 49:28Speaker 4: moments that happened when you have a bunch of people
- 49:30Speaker 4: together that believe the impossible is possible. That's sort of
- 49:33Speaker 4: what I took away from it.
- 49:35Speaker 2: And the finish is like poetic, Yeah, I mean, it's
- 49:38Speaker 2: just grinding against the wall.
- 49:39Speaker 3: The coolest part for me, though, is whenever they cut
- 49:41Speaker 3: down to y'all on pit Roads and I was ino,
- 49:45Speaker 3: you're about to jump, Well, Harry is definitely about to
- 49:47Speaker 3: jump to the pit box.
- 49:49Speaker 1: And that's Hamlin right there right behind you.
- 49:51Speaker 3: It's the first thing I could see. So everything.
- 50:01Speaker 1: A Moose. Are they still a sponsor?
- 50:04Speaker 3: They are?
- 50:05Speaker 1: Yeah, they should be.
- 50:06Speaker 3: They're my personal longest sponsor I've ever had. Uh. They
- 50:10Speaker 3: followed me from the O'Reilly series up to Cup several
- 50:12Speaker 3: teams and yeah, a Moose, no even even.
- 50:17Speaker 1: I'm actually a little ignorant to what be a Moose
- 50:19Speaker 1: is Moose fraternity.
- 50:20Speaker 3: So they're fraternal lodge. There's locations all across the country,
- 50:24Speaker 3: membership based, and they have a children's home in Chicago
- 50:27Speaker 3: and a retirement home in Jacksonville. South of Jacksonville. Might
- 50:34Speaker 3: have to sign y'all up when we get off camera. Yeah,
- 50:38Speaker 3: I'll sponsor you. Get you signed up quick.
- 50:40Speaker 1: And so this is essentially this move happens and within
- 50:43Speaker 1: hours it feels like all of NASA's like, can't do that,
- 50:46Speaker 1: We're done doing that no more.
- 50:48Speaker 3: They gave us a week, they let us go to
- 50:49Speaker 3: Phoenix for the championship race, and they allowed it to
- 50:52Speaker 3: happen there if anybody wanted.
- 50:53Speaker 1: To did it.
- 50:55Speaker 3: No one did it.
- 50:55Speaker 1: It didn't.
- 50:56Speaker 3: So coming down to the end of the race, I'm
- 50:58Speaker 3: running down divn't Joey Logano who won the championship, but
- 51:02Speaker 3: his teammate Blaney stayed behind him and wouldn't pass him.
- 51:05Speaker 3: Ryan clearly faster, yeah, but stayed behind. You didn't have
- 51:09Speaker 3: to win the race to win the championship. You just
- 51:11Speaker 3: had to finish ahead of the other three guys, and
- 51:13Speaker 3: Bell wrecked out with a break issue. I spun Chase
- 51:16Speaker 3: Elliott in the race. He was one of the four
- 51:19Speaker 3: that was not intentional, but I did. And then yeah,
- 51:22Speaker 3: it was me and Joey basically left, and yeah, Blaney
- 51:25Speaker 3: just stayed behind him. So I thought, if I go
- 51:26Speaker 3: up there and do it in three and four, really
- 51:29Speaker 3: turns one and two would be I mean, after I
- 51:31Speaker 3: did it Martinsville. Then we think about as drivers and
- 51:34Speaker 3: people in the sport, we think about all the tracks,
- 51:36Speaker 3: and I can basically tell you now that I felt
- 51:39Speaker 3: it if it's gonna work, and it would have worked
- 51:41Speaker 3: at Phoenix, but he had like a blocker basically, and
- 51:44Speaker 3: I was like, Blaney's just gonna unwine the wheel and
- 51:46Speaker 3: I'm gonna run right in the back of him, which
- 51:47Speaker 3: is what happened to Larson the year before with Denny
- 51:50Speaker 3: no Way at Darlington. He just ran right in the backup.
- 51:54Speaker 2: Guys, listen up, we need to talk about something very serious.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Oh no, bakfast. Okay, actually, yes, very serious because for
- 52:03Speaker 2: too long, breakfast has been either nothing but coffee, which
- 52:07Speaker 2: is a crime, or a full production chopping, prepping, cooking, cleaning,
- 52:12Speaker 2: and by the time you're done, it's basically lunch exactly.
- 52:16Speaker 2: And that's why we are fired to have to announce
- 52:17Speaker 2: that Kevin's Natural foods Now has breakfast. Kevin's for breakfast.
- 52:24Speaker 2: You guys already know we love Kevin's for lunch and dinner,
- 52:26Speaker 2: and now that we get to officially add breakfast to
- 52:29Speaker 2: the morning routine with their Scrambler starters, which means you
- 52:32Speaker 2: can now eat Kevins all day, every day. That's a
- 52:35Speaker 2: complete system. That's a winning game plan. Kevin's Scramble starters
- 52:40Speaker 2: are legit. They're made with tender protein, crisp vegetables, and
- 52:43Speaker 2: a creamy sauce with insanely good flavors like Denver style
- 52:46Speaker 2: ham and white cheddar and spinach and bacon florentine. Just
- 52:51Speaker 2: add eggs for a delicious scramble in minutes. Plus, they're
- 52:54Speaker 2: made with real ingredients, no added sugars, gluten free, soy
- 52:58Speaker 2: free and no mystery meat, just high quality protein. You
- 53:02Speaker 2: got that right. You just take the scramble starter out
- 53:05Speaker 2: of the freezer, throw it in a pan, add your eggs,
- 53:07Speaker 2: drizzling the sauce, and in about fifteen minutes you've got
- 53:10Speaker 2: a real breakfast that's better than anything you've ordered at
- 53:13Speaker 2: a restaurant, but without waiting forty five minutes for a table.
- 53:16Speaker 2: So yes, Kevin'satural Foods has breakfast.
- 53:18Speaker 1: Now.
- 53:18Speaker 2: Find Kevin's Scrambler Starters in the frozen isle at Target, Kroger, Harris, Teeter, Giant,
- 53:24Speaker 2: and Hannaford's stores. Kevin's for breakfast Morning's just got a
- 53:28Speaker 2: major upgrade.
- 53:32Speaker 1: You've brought up two times that you've hit somebody, spun
- 53:35Speaker 1: them out, but it was not intentional. Do you have
- 53:36Speaker 1: you ever admitted to intentionally hitting somebody?
- 53:39Speaker 3: I have?
- 53:40Speaker 1: Yeah, who was that set of a bidget?
- 53:42Speaker 3: I definitely don't do it on the radio. So that's
- 53:44Speaker 3: the thing right now in our sport where Ryan Priest
- 53:47Speaker 3: got penalized for recking Ty Gibbs, and he talked about
- 53:52Speaker 3: it and then he went and did it and he
- 53:55Speaker 3: got penalized and now he sells T shirt. So I
- 53:57Speaker 3: bought a don't press the button T shirt. I don't
- 53:59Speaker 3: know if you see. They're just blank white shirts and
- 54:02Speaker 3: it just says, don't press the button. Well, yeah, and
- 54:04Speaker 3: that's the that's that's the precedent right now.
- 54:07Speaker 1: Ability don't say it.
- 54:08Speaker 3: So yeah, there's other people in the sport that have
- 54:11Speaker 3: had similar run ins and they just don't say anything,
- 54:13Speaker 3: and you just handle your business.
- 54:16Speaker 1: So who did you put down this? Who'd you old
- 54:20Speaker 1: yeller on the on the racetrack? What?
- 54:23Speaker 3: A lot of what started that year with Danny will
- 54:25Speaker 3: keep it in twenty two because I think the statue
- 54:29Speaker 3: limitations has ran out at Worldwide Technology Raceway. It's really
- 54:34Speaker 3: long name for a track at Gateway in Saint Louis,
- 54:36Speaker 3: home of Vanheuser Busch, which we love.
- 54:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:40Speaker 3: Yeah, I did run into Danny on purpose, which kind
- 54:42Speaker 3: of started, not started, but that definitely sparked off the
- 54:46Speaker 3: few that happened the rest of that year. But yeah,
- 54:48Speaker 3: I was trying to pass him, trying to pass him,
- 54:50Speaker 3: tried to move him, he way over corrected, hit the wall.
- 54:54Speaker 3: I hit him too hard and that was intentional.
- 54:57Speaker 1: What was what's the relationship with like with Denny?
- 54:59Speaker 3: Now good, it's good yeah, it is.
- 55:03Speaker 1: It's all good.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, for one, I mean, sorry, boss, I'm not
- 55:08Speaker 3: fast enough to catch him right now. And I mean
- 55:11Speaker 3: I had to run into him here to try to
- 55:12Speaker 3: make the next round of the playoffs last fall, and
- 55:15Speaker 3: he was fine. He totally understood. He didn't have a clue.
- 55:17Speaker 3: I don't understand how he didn't know what was happening,
- 55:20Speaker 3: which is wild to me. What he had no idea
- 55:23Speaker 3: why I would run into him, But he understood once
- 55:25Speaker 3: he learned.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Did you.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Just desperate? Yeah? So yes, Danny and I yeah, we
- 55:38Speaker 3: we I think he it's it's easier to get along
- 55:42Speaker 3: with people when you're not racing them every week and
- 55:44Speaker 3: right now, the like I'm not I'm not fast enough
- 55:47Speaker 3: to keep up with any right now. So he's at
- 55:49Speaker 3: the top, like literally, he's the best car week in
- 55:51Speaker 3: and week out, and we're not there right now. So yeah,
- 55:54Speaker 3: when we get back up there, it might be more
- 55:56Speaker 3: hard conversations.
- 55:58Speaker 1: It seems like you have a rich history of driving aggressive.
- 56:01Speaker 3: What's what got me here? Like overperforming in the red cars,
- 56:05Speaker 3: overperforming in the trucks, even the cup cars along the way. Yeah,
- 56:11Speaker 3: I kind of I learned. My dad taught me at
- 56:13Speaker 3: an early age which he was a hobby racer farmer.
- 56:17Speaker 3: My dad farms. I come from a long line of
- 56:19Speaker 3: farmers from South Florida, but dad did some hobby racing
- 56:22Speaker 3: got me into it, and he just, I don't know,
- 56:23Speaker 3: instilled in me an early age, like you blocked the
- 56:26Speaker 3: bottom our local short track was you ran the bottom
- 56:28Speaker 3: at four seventeen speedways what it ended its time as
- 56:32Speaker 3: And yeah, you just ran the very bottom and you
- 56:35Speaker 3: blocked and moved people out of the way to pass them.
- 56:37Speaker 3: It's what I watched my heroes at that local track do,
- 56:40Speaker 3: and so I've just kept that, Like the guys I
- 56:43Speaker 3: idolized at fourteen years old when I was racing as
- 56:46Speaker 3: a hobby, that's what they did. And I might have
- 56:49Speaker 3: taken it a little too far a couple of these times.
- 56:52Speaker 3: But also they weren't they didn't have the national spotlight
- 56:55Speaker 3: of the Cup series on them, so I realized like
- 56:57Speaker 3: they could spend someone out. And it was like two
- 57:00Speaker 3: hundred people in the grandstands watched it. That was it.
- 57:02Speaker 3: And now it's in a real moment, and now it's
- 57:04Speaker 3: now here we are.
- 57:06Speaker 1: As you're coming up, what do you think the how
- 57:11Speaker 1: people viewed you the older the older heads in the sport.
- 57:14Speaker 1: You come in this aggressive driving, these really risky maneuvers,
- 57:18Speaker 1: maneuvers you're you're doing. How are these older drivers viewing you? Do?
- 57:22Speaker 1: You believe?
- 57:23Speaker 3: In my experience, and I don't want to speak for
- 57:25Speaker 3: other people, but what they have told me along the
- 57:28Speaker 3: way is it's it's fine as long as it's.
- 57:31Speaker 1: Not them, all right.
- 57:33Speaker 3: I've lived with Ron Horner Day, multiple time champion in
- 57:36Speaker 3: the truck Series, Todd Bodine, Big Mentor Mine and and
- 57:40Speaker 3: these drivers and these team owners, Bobby Daughter, even Stacy Compton,
- 57:44Speaker 3: who drove in the different levels of NASCAR, Like they
- 57:47Speaker 3: they were all good with it as long as I
- 57:48Speaker 3: wasn't tearing up a if they owned anything, it wasn't
- 57:51Speaker 3: tearing up their race car. And then if it wasn't
- 57:53Speaker 3: them actually driving, They're like Ron, I mean, made a
- 57:57Speaker 3: career out of like beating people on restarts and and
- 58:00Speaker 3: and then figuring out how to win the race and
- 58:02Speaker 3: studying a lot of these guys that I now race against.
- 58:05Speaker 3: I've studied Danny, I've studied Joey Logana the most of
- 58:08Speaker 3: anybody in my life. And I remember a race in
- 58:13Speaker 3: Kansas one time we went at it for like fourteenth
- 58:15Speaker 3: and we're we're not hitting each other, but we're both
- 58:18Speaker 3: mad at the end of the race and he comes over,
- 58:21Speaker 3: He's like, why would you do that? And I said, Joey,
- 58:23Speaker 3: I'm doing exactly what I've studied you doing, and I like,
- 58:27Speaker 3: that is exactly where that move into one. I've watched
- 58:30Speaker 3: you do it over and over and over and when
- 58:33Speaker 3: I wasn't even racing in the Cup Series. And he
- 58:36Speaker 3: didn't think, he didn't agree, but I think he understood,
- 58:40Speaker 3: and we've had a great relationship since. So it's fine
- 58:42Speaker 3: as long as you're not doing it.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Is that justin? Is that fair?
- 58:45Speaker 2: Like you were a vet when you guys racing. It
- 58:47Speaker 2: sounds like he even hits you when you guys had
- 58:49Speaker 2: that race.
- 58:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's a different position for me because
- 58:52Speaker 4: it's like I'm sitting here going like this guy, this
- 58:55Speaker 4: guy is going to carry us to the heights of
- 58:56Speaker 4: the sport. So it's like, how do you take this
- 58:59Speaker 4: raw talent and aggression and speed and try to like
- 59:03Speaker 4: harness it in a way that can take advantage of
- 59:06Speaker 4: the opportunity that we have in the sport and like
- 59:09Speaker 4: our cars that first year were so fast. It was
- 59:11Speaker 4: the first year of the new car and a totally
- 59:14Speaker 4: new design of the car, and all these teams were
- 59:16Speaker 4: figuring it out. What really made speed at that time
- 59:19Speaker 4: was just like culture and preparation and execution rather than
- 59:23Speaker 4: like the little tips, the little tricks and like nuances
- 59:26Speaker 4: that like you can engineer into the cars and stuff
- 59:28Speaker 4: like they do now. And I was like, you know,
- 59:31Speaker 4: I just don't want us to have opportunities get thrown
- 59:35Speaker 4: away when we can win because we've got you know,
- 59:38Speaker 4: some dick swinging contest or whatever with another driver, or
- 59:40Speaker 4: we've got you know, like we're crashing each other, whatever.
- 59:42Speaker 4: Because a lot of these times, a lot of these highlights,
- 59:44Speaker 4: like you know, our races that we were fast enough
- 59:47Speaker 4: to win. Honestly, we were fast enough to win ten
- 59:49Speaker 4: races that year, right, And and so it was like
- 59:52Speaker 4: for me, I was like just one hundred percent support
- 59:55Speaker 4: of him, just like, what what can I do to
- 59:57Speaker 4: try to help harness all all of this talent and
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: this aggression in a way that can be deployed really
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: intelligently to put us in position to win races. And
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: it happened over time, But it was like I just
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: looked at it and went like, there's something so special
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: here and a driver that's so good and so fast,
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: someone that can win a championship, that can be the
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: best driver in this sport. And it was a little
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: bit hard for me because like, you know, these drivers
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: that were mad at him had legions of fans that
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: then were mad at track House, and like all this
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: shit kind of like came out away, which was all
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: which was a little difficult for me because it's like,
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: I don't really want to be in that realm. I
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: don't really want to be a polarizing figure. I don't
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: want to be like in the middle of these conversations.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: It's like that was a little bit hard for me.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: But at the same time, it was like, there's something
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: so special here if we can just figure out how
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: to get through this. And looking back in history, you
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: look at back like the great drivers that have come in,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: like Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, these guys, Carl Edwards,
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: when they showed up, they were it was exactly the same.
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: They showed up. They were fast, they were feathers. They
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: were there racing for the win against the establishment, threatening
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: the establishment's place at the top of the sport, and
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: there was all this turmoil around it, and so like
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: I'd seen this tape play a couple of times in
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: the previous ten, fifteen, twenty years, and I'm like, Okay,
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: this is this is what all these guys went through.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: Like we're going to go through this right now. We're
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: gonna come out of the other side of this like
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: a polished, elite, top level race car driver and we're
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: gonna go win a ton of races.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Now, how do how do you feel about when people
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: are mentioning Ross Chastain was Carson Hostavar before Carson Hostavar
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: was Carson Savar because you see, listen, this is our
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: what thirteenth, fourteenth episodes whatever, There's something like that, and
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: we're kind of gathering informations as casual fans, we're diving in,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: we're getting relationships with these drivers. But it just seems
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: like this individual right here is the guy that is
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: doing exactly what you said about all those other great
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: drivers that have great legacies. They come in, they're new,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: they're fast, they're ruffling feathers that the guys that have been there.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: They're essentially challenging the established How do you how is
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: your Let's just start with the relationship. Do you guys
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: have a good one? Go hang out? Yeah? Yeah, No,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I don't not anymore.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: I've cooked, I've grilled out. He's came over to the
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: house before. Yeah. So we work with the same agency.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: He's an MMI client, and so he's came up through
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: Niice Motorsports Al Nice. He was driving a couple of
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: truck races for Jordan Anderson and al and Cody Fau
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: put him in the truck. He had sponsorship to pay
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: for it, but they gave him opportunities to run more races.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: I remember sitting in a bus outside of Martinsville. Oh gosh,
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: I don't know what year it was, but we were
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: trying to get like his every driver. I just want
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: to pull the curtain back a little bit comes into
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: the sport with personal funding. It's just it's the bad
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: side of the sport that no one likes to talk about.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: But my family invested in me to race, and an
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: investment is not it's not it's not fair to the
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: word investment because it's there's no return, there's no point
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: of doing it other than you're wanting to race and
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: want you're for my dad and my uncle and my family,
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Like we spent my inheritance and more, and we borrowed
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: money and we we we sold land. We uh, we
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: did things that looking back it was not the right call,
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: but we loved racing and they wanted me to continue
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: to race and climb the ranks. So you see it
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: with Host far As well, like his family put a
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: lot into him. So then on the nice motorsports side
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: where they are trying to figure out how to how
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: to get his career funded. I remember we sat in
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: a motorhome Rob Rose, he was then running Worldwide Express,
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: a group of companies that was sponsoring us in the
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: Cup car, and they had sponsored really the truck team
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: first another driver Dean Thompson, and then came with me
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: to track house, and I remember talking to Rob and
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: trying to get him to grasp that Carson was gonna
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: be his guy, Like I've already got other sponsors as
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: well in Cup. And you know, if Rob and I,
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: if Worldwide Express and Ross Chess San would have met
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: five years earlier, like I'd be like Rob, I'll be
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: your guy for sure, but Carson can be your guy.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: Like you get in with him now and the truck
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: series and you can go with him. I don't want
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: you to leave Trackhouse, but who knows where he goes.
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: Maybe he drives her trackhouse one day, like I don't know.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: We want him to win a truck race first, let's
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: let's get there and Rob I'll never forget. He's like,
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: I don't see it. And Carson's sitting there like shaking,
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: like nervous that this guy's saying no. But he said no,
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: and we left, and I remember, Cody, you fa put
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: his arm around Carson. I couldn't because he's so tall,
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: and he's like, buddy, you're gonna get told a thousand
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: more times. You gotta keep showing up. You gotta keep
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: asking we'll find the money, like we'll keep it going.
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: And they had not saying they were out of money,
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: but they it was a lot. It's cost a lot.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: And whenever, I mean, I don't know. That weekend went
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: by that week and I remember Cody called me. He's like,
- 1:04:43Speaker 3: I talked to Rob again, got got him on the
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: phone last night. It's not no anymore, it's it's maybe.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: It's he wants another he wants another sit down with Carson,
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: we're gonna do this race whatever, We're gonna put a
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: little sticker on the truck as like a and we're
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: gonna bring some people. It's it's a maybe. And I
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: was like, holy cow, like this could be the difference.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: And then they end up sponsoring his truck for multiple years.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: It sponsored me over there as well. They were dual
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: sponsoring me at Nice and me at Trackhouse. So I
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: just always remember that because now looking at it, he's
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: built a brand around Chili's and everything that he's done.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: And I've watched we've all watched him grow up, and
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: he's always been tall, and he always appears to me
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: older than he actually is. But he's a kid like
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: he he he's a he acts like a child. And
- 1:05:32Speaker 3: that's not putting it like in a bad way. It's just,
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: my honest opinion is the decisions he makes. Which is
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: so funny to see those pictures of us at Echo
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: Park Speedway because it's the same thing Joey was doing
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: to me at Chicago and a few minutes ago, Like
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: I was just trying to get through to him, like, man,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: you didn't have to didn't have to do that because
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: it was at my detriment, like it took me out
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: of a chance to.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Win, but yeah, somebody and and it was.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: Like pot meat kettle, yeah, walk away. And Lauren Emling,
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: who's off camera here, she's like, did you really have
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: to do that? And I was like, that was a
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: that was a misstep. I'm not a guy that walks
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: down and talks right after the race, and here he's
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: trying to explain and it didn't make any sense to me,
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: and I'm just like, Okay, this conversations over. But watching
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: him grow up like mentally has been fun, and it's fun.
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: I hope it continues. I hope he continues to grow
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: as there's there's a there's a lot left. U.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Do you think some of the hate he's getting from
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: some of these other drivers that have said on this
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: bus is it warranted or is it kind of like, hey,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: we're pulling, We're making him, turn him into a bit,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: a bit of a character in the NASCAR world.
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: They can say whatever once. I mean, he was a
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: character back when he wore those hats.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: I remember asking him back then, like what's the deal
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: with the hats? And he just wanted to stand out.
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: He was trying to make it. Yeah, his Yeah, I
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: don't know. I've red choked with a new hat every week.
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: Not sure.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: It's an interesting, interesting bit.
- 1:06:57Speaker 4: I think some of it is. I think some of
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: it is warranted, you know, obviously, because there's times when
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: he can be kind of a bull in a china shop, right.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: I mean, there's a lot of speed, there's not a
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: lot of like real what we call racecraft there, which
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: is kind of like what he's learning, which is what
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: Ross went through and a lot of these other guys
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: went through. But the other thing is that when these
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: guys show up and they're so fast and they're doing
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: these things, you know, it's like it represents a threat
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: to everybody. And I think people respond to that differently
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: and in different ways. And I think that, you know,
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: like when Raw showed up, it was it was a
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: threat to the establishment. It's like, now there's a new
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: guy that we haven't been ever had to think about before.
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: That's that's here, and he's just every week. It's just
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: damn it, he's just here. This is just something I
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: gotta deal with. Yeah, and so and then like you,
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: like I said, I think you get through that. This
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: is sort of how I think stars are born. Whether
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: it's going to happen for him or not remains to
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: be seen. But this is this is how stars are born.
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: And then eventually they come to a fork in the
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: road and they go They'll realize with maturity and experience,
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: like I got to figure out how to use all
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: this speed and this talent and this aggression in a
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: way that's going to translate wins in a career for me,
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: or I'm just sort of gonna lose my way and
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: you know, never really learn and.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: Grow as an owner when you watch O, So what
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: is it for you that he that you think he
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: needs like an area he needs to get better in.
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: I just I feel like this is how star is born.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Now it's got to the winning has got to come
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: with it.
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: I mean just raw speed is one of the ingredients
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: that ultimately goes into a pot of a lot of
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: ingredients that make a superstar. And I think like when
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: someone is just really fast, that's like the hard part.
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: And when that's there, you know, it's like everything else
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: has to sort of coalesce around that and work with
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: that to really create something. But as a team owner,
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: you look at something like that and you go, like
- 1:08:41Speaker 4: the hard part and what you're looking for is there
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: in spades, and it's just this all this speed and
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: this like I don't give a shit attitude and nobody
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: intimidates me, and I'm gonna go. You know, I'm not
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: gonna be intimidated. I'm gonna go try to win these races.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: And as an owner, like that's what you want. The
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: question mark is can all all the other stuff come
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: together around it? And I think probably in any sport
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: you look at this, right, I mean, like these guys
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: that have so much talent and so much opportunity in
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: front of them, and maybe they figure out a way
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: to harness that in their preparation, their execution and their
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: teamwork and all this kind of stuff, or those guys
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: that just can't figure it out. And for like me,
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: as a team owner, you look at something like that
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: and go and if if that gets figured out and
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: a full well rounded professional athlete while the speed maintains
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: is created, that's a hot commodity for any sports, Like
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: that's what everyone's looking for.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: You bring up speed. And so for me as a
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: fan that watched it, it's like, what is it more speed?
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Just putting your foot on the gas like, I know
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: that sounds really dumb to say when you're talking about Yeah,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: when you're talking about like a guy needs speed, like
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: for football, it's like we know what speed is because
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: it's like you just doing a forty yard desk Like, Oh,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: that guy's fast, he's got speed. That doesn't translate on
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the field.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: Yeah, Well that's that's the point. It's like, is that
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: is that? What are the intangibles? Right? Like like there's
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: there's tangible what Like it's like it was like you
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: have the combine, you've got the stuff that you can
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: measure and the data and you can look at, but like,
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: how does that How does that translate on the final
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: drive in a playoff game when like it has to
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: be it has to go, it has to be deployed
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: to win the game under pressure and under fatigue and
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: heat and pain and all this kind of stuff. Right,
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: So it's like the intangibles are you know, speed is, yeah,
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: putting your foot to the floor. But it's like understanding
- 1:10:24Speaker 4: the tire where the tire life is at, Understanding the
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: air coming off the other cars. It's understanding how much
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: fuel is burned off the car and how that changes
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: the balance of the car, because now there's twenty five
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: less pounds in the rear. That changes the dynamic of
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: the weight transfer in the car. Like all those little
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: things when we say speed, is how all those little
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: things are contemplated to maximize lap time at that moment.
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: Does that makes sense? Yeah, different lines on the racetrack,
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: different Like has the racetrack taken rubber? You know, how
- 1:10:55Speaker 4: aggressive can you be on a restart when the tires
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: are cold and the tire pressures are down and you
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: can make something happen in that moment before everyone sort
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: of settles into their running. Like all those little things
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: are kind of like what I think we call speed,
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: and then maximizing that last five or ten percent of
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: speed in the car is the intangible. It's just it's
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: actually hard to assign a term to it, or it's
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: hard to like really describe what that is. It's just
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: a feel. It's just a feel thing. It's just what
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: he feels when he drives in the corner where his
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: mind is at, how he feels the vibrations of the
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: car and the load in the car, and just that
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: extra little bit sometimes I think just comes out. It
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: just sort of comes out through the talent and the
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: feel and the nuance.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Yeah, so speed isn't necessarily the first ten laps of
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: the race when it's seventy five degrees overcast, No, when
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: full tank, great tires.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, because when he is swim speed, it's like yeah,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: everybody'll yeah exactly.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: It's understanding what takes place when elements are introduced.
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think when we talk about place like that, right,
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: and when we look at a guy like Carson, or
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: like we look at a guy like Ross or some
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: of these guys and go like, man, the guy's just
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: really fast, it's like it's it's someone that's just there
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: every week, whatever what kind of racetrack we go to,
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: or time of the year it is, or whatever's going
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: on outside of the race, every week, going like god,
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: we gotta deal with him again. He's just right there again,
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: Like right at the front.
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: What is it? Go ahead?
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: I was just watching Carson. You're measured against your teammates,
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: and that's from a driver's seat. That's that's who you're
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: You have the same equipment. Now, the crew chief might
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: choose a different spring or set up a lot of
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: different variables that they could pick. But from nice to
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: his couple of races he ran in an extra JRM
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: car and O'Reilly to the cup car at Legacy and Inspire,
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: Like he was the fastest teammate everywhere he went, and
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: it started in the truck series and that's carried all
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: the way. He was fast before Spire was fast. Now
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: they're fast with all their like with Daniel and Michael,
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: Like all three cars are are towards the front. Now
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: there there's tiers at times of like where like Carson.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: Wherever Carson is, you can add a few spots and
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: that's where the next car is and then three more
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: spots back as the third car is what I see
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: on track. I say all this because I have like
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: a great view from right behind them. I mean, like
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: we are trying, but yeah, I mean it's the truth,
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: and they're they've cycled up where now all of Spire
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: is fast. But I mean he was fast before Spire
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: was fast. Yeah, And that's where the that's where the
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: intangible comes in.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: The yeah, and out consistently outperforming your teammates, like cars
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: out of the same shop, under the same competition management
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: all that, Like that's really that's really kind of the yardstick.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: The ear everyone stays in the same equal footing like
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: who's rising above and Carson seems to be doing that
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: with his team. Russ, You've brought up a couple of
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: times like we're not as fast. You tap your boss
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: on the on the legs, Hey, we're just is this
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: with a reality mark just for you? What is like,
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: how do you fix the car if you're if your
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: drivers say, hey, we're not fast enough to compete? And
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: so against some of these other teams, like what is
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: your process to figure out the best way to make
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: your car faster?
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: Well in the middle of it right now, I mean
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: the sport. The sport right now is just fundamentally different
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: than it was in twenty twenty two when this new
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: car came because it was a revolutionary new design in
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: the car, and so those first couple of years, like
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: it was a very even playing field and everybody was
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: just learning it and trying to figure it out, and
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: it really played into our strength as an organization. And
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: then over time some of these big organizations really find
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: ways to maximize little parts of the car, how to
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: get stuff through technical inspection. You know, it's just it's
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: a maturity and evolution of the car and the management
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: of the car, and we as an organization haven't really
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: been at the same pace as some of those those
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: bigger teams that have figure out how to fully exploit
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: the speed in the car. And so for us right now,
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: it's about like we have to go, Okay, where are
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: we getting beat? Where are the places that these teams
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: are maximizing in the car that we're getting beat? And
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: you know, looking at ourselves and going, how do we
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: change the organizational structure, how do we invest in tools,
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: how do we staff up in certain areas to take
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: advantage of that. It's not something that happens over really,
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: it's gonna take this entire year of twenty twenty six
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: to get ourselves up to where we want to be.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: And so it's like we can't put pressure on ourselves
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: this week to try to figure out by this Sunday
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: at Iowa speedwhere we're racing. It's like it's more systemic.
- 1:15:16Speaker 4: It's more like, you know, who are the people maybe
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: that need to get moved around, How do we approach
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: our work, the consistency inside the shop. It's like kind
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: of all those like operational things, but we're like we're
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: working on it every day right now, and I think
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: at this point, you know, we've only got one car
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: that's that's really in the picture for the playoffs this year.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: It's almost like, Okay, that's twenty twenty six. Let's just
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: focus right now on figuring out how to maximize our
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: competitiveness and organizations. So when we go into twenty twenty seven,
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: we've taken a step up and we're on our way back.
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: But the point is is that it's just a look.
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: The first year this car came there were like nineteen
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: different winners in thirty eight races, which is like unprecedented
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: in the sport, and that just shows like where the
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: parody was at. Now it's sort of gone back to
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: where the sport has been the last twenty or thirty years.
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: We have like these two or three organizations that basically
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: are winning all the races, and they've used their infrastructure
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: and their tools and all stuff to figure how to
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: like maximize the car. So we just have to look
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: at like where is that that they're beating us and
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: just focus resources on that ross.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: For you, how frustrating can it be to sit there
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: and hey, we have one car that's going pretty much
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: in the playoffs but our focus in twenty twenty six
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: is to get ready for twenty twenty seven as a
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: driver who you're judged on where you place, how you drive,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: how fast your car is. And then obviously there's gonna
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: be another contract. I don't know how long your contract is,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: but every race you do that's going to be put
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: under a microscope. So how is it for you from
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: like a season standpoint? Do you feel that frustration when
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: you know your car is not as competitive as it
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: can be against some of these other drivers.
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: I've been told before in meetings more closed door stuff
- 1:16:51Speaker 3: that I can get very like it's hard for people
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: to read me when they're like especially whenever something's going
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: bad and they're having a conversation with me or they're
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: trying to tell me something that I just kind of
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: stone face it or something, and I don't give them
- 1:17:05Speaker 3: any like physical cues of what I'm thinking. They don't
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: really know how I'm how am I taking in what
- 1:17:10Speaker 3: they're saying. And I'll just be honest that the last
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: definitely month, I've gotten told I'm not that that I
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: because I'm I'm pulling the fire alarm like it's it's
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: been pulled in and the sirens are going off in
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: our meetings and we have you know, we talk amongst
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: the crew chiefs and other drivers and engineers of like, Okay,
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: what are we feeling in the car and how is
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: that translating to what they're seeing? And there's a disconnect there.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: And so whenever we talk about, Okay, what are we
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: going to do going to Iowa this weekend or the
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: next race to Richmond or wherever. Coming back to Charlotte
- 1:17:45Speaker 3: on the oval, which is a good thing for in
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: my opinion, coming back this fall is like I just
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: need like the car to do one thing. And our
- 1:17:55Speaker 3: cars are like they're sliding the back and they're sliding
- 1:17:57Speaker 3: the front. So it just they're very inconsistent. They're not
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: steady through the corner at all. That the typical NASCAR
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: driver comment about his race cars, he's looseen, tight in
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: the center, and loose off. That's like your stereotypical race car.
- 1:18:11Speaker 3: That that's how it's.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Going to quickly break down what those three things mean.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: Yeah, Like when you go down the straight away and
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: you turn in the corner, usually the backslides first. Then
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: once you get all the way in the corner, you
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: haven't turned the wheels, so now you turn it and
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: the front slides, and then you touch the throttle and
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: we generally have enough power to slide the back. It
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: takes some time to wear the tires out to where
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: it feels like we have enough power, but these days,
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: but anyway that backslide in front slide, then backslide on
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: exit of the corners. The three kind of the way
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: we break down the corner and ours sometimes are that.
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: Sometimes they are the opposite. They're tight off the wall,
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: so I turn and it won't turn, and then I
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: lift and I turn sideways and I'm countersteering and I
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: haven't even gotten really to the corner yet. So the
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: fire alarm has been pulled by me. And it's not
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: something really that I've ever done in my career where
- 1:18:58Speaker 3: I've gotten vocal inside of our four walls and sitting
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: here on the bus, I'll be honest with you all,
- 1:19:04Speaker 3: where it's like Justin knows like we've cycled to this
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: spot on the grid, but we're not. It's not okay,
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: we're not complacent. We're not staying here. And that comes
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: from ownership that comes from drivers. The other two are
- 1:19:17Speaker 3: saying in their own words, but we're in Unison that
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: it's like this is we're not staying here. Shane's two
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: road course winds are not what track House is going
- 1:19:26Speaker 3: to be known for every year. Because Shane can go
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: to these road courses and continue to perform at a
- 1:19:30Speaker 3: high level. Connor can as well. If it all comes
- 1:19:33Speaker 3: together and I can be right behind them, I know
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: my spot on a road course with my two teammates
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: is going to be speed wise right there, right behind
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: them on the long run. But it's not. We're not complacent.
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: So that's what's happening inside of our meeting is like
- 1:19:48Speaker 3: we're not We're not okay with how this is, how
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: this on track performance is happening.
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: Right now, which is good. Like we want everybody in
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: the company to be empowered if they feel a certain way,
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: they're frustrated about a certain thing, or they want to
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: see something improved, like socialize it, bring it up, let's
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: talk about it.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Because it feels like as uncomfortable as conversation can
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: be with owner and driver, it doesn't feel that we're
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: sitting on this bus where usually driver relay the crew
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: tree for who relays up the ladder to the owner
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: and then it comes back down playing this big game telephone.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, all.
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: Right, yeah.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: I think it just comes back to like we're all
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: in this together, right, I Mean this is like I
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: I you know, I you have ORG charts and companies,
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: but in my mind philosophically, it's a fully flat ORG chart,
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: Like we're all we're all pushing the same direction. We're
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: in this together. I don't build the cars, I don't
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: set the cars up. I just try to provide the opportunity.
- 1:20:43Speaker 4: So like I can't take it personally, like it's you know,
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: if if the team's not doing well, it's not like
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: I fucked up something, right, It's like just the sport
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: that the sports hard, and it changes and there's ebbs
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: and flows and it's constantly evolving and and you know, ultimately,
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: like if he's frustrated and he's pulling the fire alarm,
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: I'm like, okay, like what what do you need? What
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: are you feeling? What are you frustrated about? Like, let's
- 1:21:04Speaker 4: figure out, let's just be solution oriented here, and that's
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: just the work that has to be done.
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: Known the buck stops with you, you being the owner.
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: When these uh say, differences of opinion are taking place.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: How are you trying to cipher through and communicate to
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: the team knowing that you're now in ownership. You've been
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: on the business side for a while, but you've also
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: been a racer to know that, hey, what my drivers
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: are saying here is more correct than what your pushback is.
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: Well, I certainly like being an owner that has driven
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: for twenty five years, Like, I know what he's feeling.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: I know what it feels like to be frustrated. I
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: know what it feels like to win. I know what
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: it feels like, you know, the whole spectrum. And I
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: think that puts me in a unique position because because
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: I'm I'm like again, I just know, I know what
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: he's feeling. So I think I'm better equipped to try
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: to deliver what he or any of the drivers need
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: to get better. I would say, like, is like, we
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: want that discourse in the organization, but it has to
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: be solution oriented, right, Like we're not We don't want
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: bitching to bitch, we don't want to just complain and
- 1:22:08Speaker 4: the cars suck. You know, I can't do shit with him,
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: and that's it. It's like, let's talk about we had
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: a great talk two weeks ago, leading into Indy with
- 1:22:16Speaker 4: our race at Indy and he was like, man, I'm
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: that It was right before our team meeting and he
- 1:22:22Speaker 4: was like, I'm frustrated with this. This is what I
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: want to hear if I don't hear this, this is
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: this is what I'm going to advocate for, and like
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: that's exactly what we need, right. It's just not complaining,
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: but like be solution oriented. Let's all like galvanize ourselves
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: together to be like moving in the right direction. This
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: sport is so I mean, we will go to Iowa
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: this weekend. In the entire field, all forty cars or
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: thirty six cars will qualify within four tenths of a second.
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: And so like if he goes and anybody, the person
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: that qualifies twenty fifth will be two tenths of a
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: second on that lap off the guy that qualifies first.
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: Like these are these are the this is like the
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: details that we're working in, and there's like so much
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: work that goes behind those half a ten, so those
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: hundreds of a second that it's like we just we
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: have to be so focused on details and just have
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: the right culture in the shop and just have everybody
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: moving in the right direction and I'm as the owner
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: ultimately am like trying to be in a supporting role,
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: Like I'm trying to be behind and under all of
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: it and just be supporting it everywhere. What do you need? Like,
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: what do you need? I'll get out of the way.
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: It's just worked for me.
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: Has there ever been a moment where rubber has met
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: the road between you two and there's been some frictional conversations.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: I think the closest we got was probably like in
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: the summer of twenty twenty two when there was a
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: lot of run ins with Denny Hamlin and with Joey
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: and with Chase Elliott and these other guys, and I
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: think the it was the only conversation was like, we're
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: so fast, and we have so much opportunity, and there's
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: so many races we can win, Like, let's let's not
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: throw these opportunities away. If you're pissed off at another driver,
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: if you if you want to get back at him,
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: if if you're if you've got some score to settle,
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: is if you achieve that, is that better than winning
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: the race? Because we're here to win the race, So
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: maybe let that ship go. It was probably the only
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: conversation we've ever had.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: How did you receive that?
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: How does that make you feel I've finished better in
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: the races? Yeah? That that's ultimately all that matters.
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: Yeah, win in the race, all the other things. You
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: didn't treat him like, uh, like Noah Gregson.
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: I stay out of that one. I watched the cliffs
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: just like everybody else. Ye, I don't know if we
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: even talking about that.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: We don't do. We always have to bring up old fights.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: They're kind of fun. Yeah, it's kind of fun.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: We're gonna go all the way around the table here.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: We have to do our homework and sit there and
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: be like, what what's happened in your past that we
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: can talk about on this bus.
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just like in a bar fight.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Yeah, you guys cool now, But you see Noah coming
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: he comes on the bus.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: No, it's hitting the gritty like you know, he's got
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: he's got a lot of vibe.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: You can just tell this kids like an add poster child, Like.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: He is all over the place like military school didn't
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: quite work.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: No, military school actually the opposite should have been. And
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: so this guy is just constantly happy.
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: Do you play.
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Blinder? Yeah, we've been there. Well not we but this
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: bus has been there before, the peaky blinders. Yeah, we listen.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: We've all been in fights. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: I'm just in four k on the Pitt Road, still
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: twenty thousand people stands.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: He's asking me what my problem is?
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Okay, what was your problem?
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: Apparently that I have wore a hat. Did you bump
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: him off turn four? He was having a better day.
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: We touched.
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: I pause, Oh, ship, you've taken a boxing class. I
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: know that now.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: I grew up as a chastain and cousin of the Bishops.
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: I've watched and been in a few.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: But I mean but it like, listen, quick, quick, flush.
- 1:26:10Speaker 3: You got to keep looking. That's I've learned that that's been.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't look away. Set the guy in the
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: yellow shirt too. It seems like shot coming. Huh.
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: Yeah, very thankful. Ever since said.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: Your beard looks incredible. He grabs, He grabs you first,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: that's already assault. That's already assault.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: And then me on the elbow. I've learned trial and error,
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: mainly error to not like if you put your hands
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: on the elbows, you feel the their swing coming.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: And I could.
- 1:26:40Speaker 3: Feel like his right arm was twist red.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: It was going, Yeah, this is a where are you
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: guys at now?
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: We walked That was on a Sunday Monday morning. After that,
- 1:26:50Speaker 3: we walked into the gym. He was a Chevy driver
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: at the time, and we worked out together and fist bump.
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: We shook hands and then worked out and fist bumped
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: on our way out and have been ever since now
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: a couple. It's not lost on me that like, if
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: the right opportunity ever came up, he wouldn't try to get.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: On the score.
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so he got one or I've got one coming,
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: I guess. But we don't race with him right now.
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: Like how I said that about Spiral, Like we don't
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: race with the four car, So you know, it makes
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: it It makes it EASi the four car because like especially
- 1:27:27Speaker 3: as track House has been not as frustraight as them. Yeah,
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: does this have a research like a trailer hitch on
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: the back of the bus because they're on the next bus.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: There we go. You heard that we've had a Yeah,
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: there's been a we've had a bunch of runnings. This
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: is against Seattle. That's Marcus Mariot running out to the
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: right right there, and that is a nasty hit from
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: Richard Sherman. So you're gonna see a big white guy
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: running problem is Yeah, it's me asking what his problem
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: is right there. Yeah, so we've been there. I was
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: praised for that. You seem like you run as I'm
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: proud of that moment of mind. You're not proud of
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: your No.
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: I mean, look, I just I'm not a I'm not
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: a fighter. That's kind of odd to say.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but I don't have the chest sting. You grew
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: up with the Bishops. You You've done this your whole life,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: so you are a fighter.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: I don't like to get punched, So I don't want
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: to be in scenarios where I might get punched. I've
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: been punched. I had a plan and then I got
- 1:28:16Speaker 3: punched in the nose, and I don't ever want that
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: to happen again. So, yeah, that one got away without
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: uh one coming back because Stan right, yeah, uh stepped
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: in and stopped him.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: But there's the guy in the gold shirt. Yep.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: One angle we haven't gotten to explore, justin being the
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: owner seeing his driver seeing this go down. Yeah, Like
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: from your vantage point, is it like you're kind of
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: like hitting the boys?
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: Got to be and then I want to I want
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: to put words in nothing. There's gotta be two parts, right, like,
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: oh my drivers about to get fined. There's probably some
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: sort of effect from an owner standpoint, but clicks views
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: track House fist pump emotion. That's another viral moment for
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: us in track House.
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: I didn't really have much of a reaction to it. Besides,
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: you know, I've just got I've got guys are standing
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: up for themselves, which is what I want, right, I
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: would say, the only thing now that I'm thinking about
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: it is that I had to have two conversations with
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: sponsors that week that were like, we don't want people
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: representing us that are getting on fights in television and
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: violence with our logos, you know, and all that kind
- 1:29:22Speaker 4: of stuff. So then as the owner, I have to
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: explain a little bit about the passion and the sport
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: and sort of like the circumstances and like this is
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: not indicative. This is just a highly competitive sport. Like
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: we all want to win for you, everybody. We're doing
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: everything we can have good results for you and the
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: money that you're spending with our team and all that
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: kind of stuff. So like I don't want to say
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: to like talk them off the ledge. But like as
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: the owner, that's my responsibility. I have to have those
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: conversations and everything's fine, but like purely from a competition standpoint,
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: like I don't want anybody in this organization rolling over
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: for anybody. We stand up for ourselves, We fight for
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: our opportunities and we go get it a help.
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: They were are sponsored there over Legacy Motor Club now
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: with Eric Jones, mcking Richard Petty. But they they're a
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: faith based hospital. I mean not fighting like right, I
- 1:30:12Speaker 3: mean that's not what we that's not what we do.
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: And I had driven for them for several years.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Think about it. Yeah sometimes test right, I can tell you,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: but that's faith based a little bit, right.
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: But the Seventh Day event we were not not a
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: fun conversation.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: But yeah, no, no, yeah, that's probably that we just
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: made And that was busting with the boys that said
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: that not track us. We don't want to lose sponsorships here.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: It wasn't. Ten seconds after it happened. I asked Lauren,
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: who's been with me for a lot of this stuff,
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: and I was like, that's gonna cost me and she said, well,
- 1:30:52Speaker 3: maybe a fine maybe with sponsorship like I was worried. Really, yeah,
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: they know, they know me and it's not going to
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: be a common thing.
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: And did you get a fined?
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: No, because he got it first, because he grabbed me first.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: He grabbed your jests first.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: We saw one as salt and we did have the
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: CEO on and he was kind of saying like, if
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: drivers handle it themselves and pit crews aren't.
- 1:31:14Speaker 3: Getting notice, note none of our crew is in there.
- 1:31:17Speaker 3: They actually turned around and held his crew. They were
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: his crews wanting to pile in, and they just said, no,
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: you're not not.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: I stay out of it a little bit, which is
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: probably very difficult for the pit crew for the CEO
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: who sits on this bus and says, hey, actually, we're
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: not going to find the guys if they want to
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: handle it between themselves. Long as there's not like a
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: mask that takes place, you're you're going to go. Is
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: there a piece of you that feels like, man, I
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: should have swum a little harder because he did kind
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: of eat that he did.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: He just looked at me, he closed his eyes. I
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: hit him and he looked right at me, and I
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: was like, oh, this is gonna hurt. Yeah, I've been.
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: I've been in that scenario before where yeah, it was
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: coming back my way.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: Can I tell you a fun story.
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: My freshman year at Michigan, I'm two hundred and fifty
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: four pounds, so I'm very small for an offensive lineman.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: And there's this walk on offensive lineman and his name's
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Eric Gunarson. Here's three hundred and seventy pounds. So during camp,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: the first couple of days of pads, they put us
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: on a boardrobe, which is basically you put a board
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: down your feet, straddle, and you hit each other. And
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: the goal basically is who can It's sumo wrestling essentially,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: who can push the other one off? Eric Gunnerson and
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: I get put up against each other. I'm a four
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: star athlete, I'm you know, I think I'm the shit.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: This kid's a walk on. He's paying to go to
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: school and also play football, and he dog walks me,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: not once, not twice, but three times in a row.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: When the third time, his helmet comes off, and just reactionary,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: I swing as hard as I can and hit him
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: right here in that like cheek nose area. His head
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: turns and just slowly comes back to me and just
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: looks at me, and I thought, oh my god, I'm
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: the fucking I'm gonna die here. I'm gonna die his face.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: Last thing I see coaches jump in. He doesn't even react,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: which is even more scary. I basically have like real
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: life Jason Vorhees is staring at me, ready to kill me.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: And I told him there he is right there. Now,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: that's the seventy five. That's Michael Schofield. But the guy
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: on the pink shirt, Oh oh, sorry, the blue shirt
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: we end up they yeah, yeah.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: The other blue shirt.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Yeah, the other blue shirt, the white guy with the glasses.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: I tell him, I tell him things. Calm down. I'm like, hey,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: before we leave college, you get one free one and
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: I won't do anything about it. I promise. We both
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: red shirt that year, and we spent four years together,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: end up being roommates along with a couple other guys
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: in the house. And we are getting after it one
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: night in the middle of summer before our senior year
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: and we're talking about it or whatever, and Gun, I've
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: gotten up to three fifteen. Now, Gun, he's come down
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: to like three fifteen. He had to lose weight. I
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: was in the gain weight train and Buddy he smoked
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: me so hard. I had like a click in my
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: job for weeks weeks and weeks. Couldn't he you go
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: to choose something. It was like oatmeal only for a
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: little bit. Yep. But I didn't cry, not until he
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: got to my room by myself. So anyway, I never
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: told nor of that. But yeah, sometimes you can fight.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Sometimes it happens.
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: It happens.
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Just what about you? What's the worst fight you've
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: ever been in?
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: The worst fight, I mean qualification, not you, I haven't really.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: It's not me man, Yeah, not really A lover.
- 1:34:14Speaker 4: I want everybody to win, even Road America. When when
- 1:34:21Speaker 4: you you wrecked me, it was like I I just
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: I knew that you did something dumb and that it
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: was like that you were learning and you were finding
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: your way. I just like immediately went to a place
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: of peace in my mind about it. I just was like, honestly, I.
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: Just first guy I ever knew the drink. I laughed
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: at him. Drink its fire.
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of nice. Expensive us. We used to
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: house whole Yeah yeah, yeah, we smoke some dude that
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: was money. What about you, will was the worst fight
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: you've ever been in your life?
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: I really haven't been in any bad ones. They've all
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: been broken up fairly quickly, which is kind.
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: Of what you want.
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to think because I haven't been in many,
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: but yeah, kind of the same boat as as Justin
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: over here.
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: Just want to man, that's why we get along.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: Justin over here, Yeah did he's he's one of those
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: cats that he's gonna get emotion. But those are your
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: emotions to hold because are not try to be very
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: very h that's a California.
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: And the other thing is with sponsors, you know, like
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: he's got sponsors on his car. Shane has sponsors on
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: his car. Connor has sponsors on his car. I have
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: all of them right right as the owner of the company.
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: It all comes back to me, right, So like Switzerland.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: Man, Yeah, you keep the peace everywhere to go. I
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: feel good about that. Do you have any more questions? Oh?
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: I got one for Justin Justin zoom out. See the
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: box we've been in with racing and each year and this,
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: that and the other. Becoming an owner, is there a party?
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: Because again is uh trackhouse is a different vibe than
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: the usual traditional way of getting a NASCAR So a
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: part of you that has that chip on your shoulder
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: about going against the establishment and kind of doing it
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: a way that seems to be very rare.
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: I don't have a cell in my body that has
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: anything close to that. Honestly, like like, I look very inward.
- 1:36:22Speaker 4: I don't take I really don't try to look at
- 1:36:25Speaker 4: how we stack up against other teams or what our
- 1:36:30Speaker 4: success over the years, how it resonates with the establishment
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: or just sort of anything like that. I honestly just
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: one hundred percent keep it within our four walls, right.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: So it's like, yeah, we've done some great things. We've
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: got sixteen wins on the board, we've got a second
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: place championship finish, we've been in the playoffs every single year.
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: Great sponsorships, you know, the bush Light. The bush Light
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: sponsorship with Anheuser Busch was basically an RFP with every
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: team in the sport, and we won that along with
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: some other great sponsors, brought Red Bull back to the sport,
- 1:37:01Speaker 4: all those things. That is something that I just I
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: have a lot of pride in around our people and
- 1:37:08Speaker 4: our mandate. Our mission is a company and at the
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: end of the day, it's it's not it's all like
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: an internal thing it's like trying to create this environment
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: where we all believe that we're capable of doing great
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: things and all just like working together to try to
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: achieve our dreams as a group. And that's that's kind
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: of where it stops. There's no there's no look. I
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: have an unbelievable amount of respect for the teams and
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: the team owners in this sport that have won all
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: these championships, right Rick Hendricks got twenty championships or something.
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: Joe Gibbs, Roger Penski, you know, these guys are the
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: true legends of our sport, and I think what they've
- 1:37:51Speaker 4: done is is is sort of untouchable. At the same time,
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: track House is about today. It's about today and what
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: we're doing and trying to go out into the world
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: and and work hard and work hard together to go
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: achieve our dreams as a group of right now two
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: hundred people. And that's kind of the that's the extent
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: of it for me.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: I love that answer. Have you watched our volog when
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: we got to tour Hendrick Motorsports?
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: No? Did you? When did you do it?
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: A couple of like a month ago, a couple weeks.
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: Did you go to the new the perform, the new
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: athletic performance. Yeah.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Thing they're talking about combines that they held a hole.
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: I mean you maybe take a peek, like it's like
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: a college football facility.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: I mean, what we don't let don't let Ross look
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: at it because he's gonna be Yeah, can we get
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: a cold tub or something else?
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: What we don't. What we don't have at track House
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: is that element of legacy. And I think that when
- 1:38:42Speaker 4: you go to Hendrick Motorsports and you walk through there
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: like you feel history, and when you walk onto that
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: campus you see all their new stuff. There's still a
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: building in the corner of that property where Hendrick Motorsports
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: started in like nineteen eighty five as like a one
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: car team with Jeff Bodin maybe was the first driver,
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: and what it's grown into today, and you just think
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: of decades of a dynasty. That's not track House's story.
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: We've only been here ten minutes and we're just trying
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: to do what we can do today and be focused
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: on tomorrow and then like whatever however that's viewed in
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: twenty years from now, thirty years from now, it's not
- 1:39:20Speaker 4: really in our minds right now. It's just about right now.
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: It's truly just about what do we have to do
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: to go to Iowa Speedway this Sunday and put on
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: the best performance with our group of people that we can.
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: YEA our lobby, like our story. Our trophies are from
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: twenty twenty two to now. That's our The hail meloncar's
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: in there with the wall the trophies. I have the
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: World the Coke six hundred Champion Coke six hundred trophy
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: at my house. But yeah, than that, like all the
- 1:39:48Speaker 3: all of our storytelling just started in twenty two. We
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: want first one. That's really when we you know, when
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: Justin bought in, as walked in, as you know, owning
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: that shop and that the entity there. Definitely, that's that's
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: our story. So short.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: Is there a commercial great hyperbaric chamber.
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: There's a cold cold guys there. They'll take care of us,
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: you know, pets.
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: But got some free weights laying around like a trash
- 1:40:21Speaker 4: can or something.
- 1:40:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but it was it was on wheels. It was Yeah,
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: that was c g R.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: That's gonna be like when you're old and you bring

- 1:40:49Speaker 1: question I want before we get you out of here,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: a lot of sponsors. I don't know how much room
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: is taking place on this car, but how much would
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: it cost to get a busting with the ball a
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: sticker on one of these cars? How big right there?
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: Bumper sticker style would be if we could replace the one?
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: And it's just yeah, how how much would it cost
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: for us to get the hood? What's the most what's
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: the best piece of real estate in the car? The hood? Yeah?
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: Well, like the hood and then the side right there
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: next to the number. That's worth more than this bus.

- 1:41:27Speaker 3: It's only a little bit more, and.
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: That's I mean, that's real money. That's real money.
