- 0:32Speaker 1: What is happening everybody?
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is Dave Croft, and welcome back to another 52Q's Q review, where I feature a Q written by you, a member of the 52Q's community, and then I provide critiques and feedback, like you might hear from a music supervisor or a potential library.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And today we are checking out Next man Up, which is a sports rock Q written by one of my guitar heroes, jesse Kerrigan.
- 0:58Speaker 1: So we are going to take a listen to it and then talk about it on the other side.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Oh, I didn't know if we were going to get a bucket of fish man there at the end or not, but, jesse, this is absolutely fantastic.
- 3:10Speaker 1: You know, of course, I am a huge fan of your work and the guitar tones, and correct me if I'm wrong, but this is your helix, right?
- 3:18Speaker 1: I think you've been doing some tests in the community comparing my actual mic'd cabs versus amp modelers and amp-sams, but I think this is all working really, really well.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I bring the hats down in the mix a little bit Nice layering.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I feel like the cymbals could come down in the mix just kind of.
- 3:46Speaker 1: In general, love going to the toms here.
- 3:53Speaker 1: There's a high part that I think could come out of the mix just a little bit here and where is the bass?
- 4:09Speaker 1: So tons of mix notes because you understand, like sports rock, so this is really really good.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So I'm not giving you a bunch of form notes, but I'm trying to kind of sort out where the bass is.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I feel like the bass is getting a little bit lost.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I'm just sweeping around 50 hertz.
- 4:41Speaker 1: The bass guitar is kind of somewhere around here, but I feel like it's just getting lost.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So it's like we've given all the low ends to the kick, which is fine.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The kick sounds really nice, but it almost sounds like there's not much of a bass and I wonder if we should go to the right cymbal here Coming out of the hi-hat.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think ride, because these are all nice long tones all throughout here, and so going to a more sustained sound on your cymbals, I think is going to be really, really good.
- 5:36Speaker 1: You can even bell and I would punch.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Of course you know me, it's going to be a lot of drum notes I would punch the kick and crash with the lick, like, right there, you even set up the fill, but let's punch it on the end.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it feels a little square, landing straight on the downbeat right there.
- 6:17Speaker 1: And so, yeah, if you were in the ride cymbal and then came back to the hi-hat here, I think that's going to make this hat part feel a lot more.
- 6:33Speaker 1: It'll feel like we really returned where we are and those short hi-hat notes really really work.
- 6:41Speaker 1: You, even though you're playing quarter notes, the short hi-hat notes work because the guitar is playing a lot more energetically throughout here and I feel like the solo part could come out a little bit more.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And I wonder if you maybe double track it or do some stereo widening here.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Yeah, those punches there are really really, really nice.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And as far as the title, I think this is all absolutely working.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Again, you know your way around this and so, other than the lows of the bass getting a little bit lost and I know this was another mastering pass for you I'm just gonna do a little 3K boost.
- 7:40Speaker 1: So that's a little boost at 3K, that's without it.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Maybe scoop a little bit out of the mids, let's bypass it all together.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's gonna help the snare drum cut a little bit, it's gonna help the sizzle of the guitars cut through a little bit and we'll probably especially if we scoop out around 500 or so leave a little bit more room for the bass and then we inevitably add that bass back.
- 8:31Speaker 1: But, jesse, thank you so much for sending this along.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Just a ton of guitar or drum mix notes for you, but this is fantastic and I know that this is going to find some love and I know because you've already gotten some love on air.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So that's really fantastic.
