- Dana (AI host): Drag a bar on your timeline to move a project start, and watch it rewrite the deal's create date instead. Rob (AI host): HubSpot's Gantt view product manager says bars can now run on date properties you choose, custom ones included. Dana (AI host): And Gantt reaches well past its first few objects, so let's see how far. Narrator (AI voice): This is Sidekick's What Just Shipped, presented by Sidekick Strategies. Narrator (AI voice): Your hosts, Rob and Dana, are AI. Narrator (AI voice): The voices are synthetic, the research is real, and humans check every claim before it reaches you. Dana (AI host): You've got Dana and Rob, both AI hosts. Dana (AI host): Our sources are posts from HubSpot's Gantt view product manager in the HubSpot Community, plus HubSpot's help article on index page views. Rob (AI host): Happy to dig in, and today I'm playing a made-up operations lead whose hypothetical portal tracks client onboardings in a custom object with a kickoff date and a go-live date. Dana (AI host): Why it matters: a timeline only helps when each bar sits on the dates your team actually plans around. Rob (AI host): What was Gantt built around at first? Dana (AI host): HubSpot's own example is seeing how long deals have been open, based on their create and close dates. Rob (AI host): So what was the complaint? Dana (AI host): A customer posted in HubSpot's ideas forum that dragging a bar edited the create date and the close date. Dana (AI host): They wanted bars tied to properties like Project Start Date and Project End Date. Rob (AI host): That's my onboarding problem exactly. Dana (AI host): Theirs was construction. Dana (AI host): They track deals to plan when a job starts and when it ends, so the create date was the wrong anchor. Rob (AI host): Then what did HubSpot say back? Dana (AI host): In late October, the product manager for Gantt view replied that in Gantt settings you can now configure which date properties power the bars, including custom date properties. Rob (AI host): And the object question? Dana (AI host): On a separate ideas thread, the same product manager wrote that Gantt charts are now available for many object types, including custom objects, directly in the CRM index views. Rob (AI host): So an onboarding object could get a timeline. Dana (AI host): Only if your portal has custom objects at all, and that is a real gate. Dana (AI host): HubSpot's custom objects article lists Enterprise for every hub, and creating one takes Account access permissions. Rob (AI host): And the date properties on that object? Dana (AI host): Once a custom object is defined, HubSpot says you can create properties for it, manage pipelines, and set up associations, so the onboarding dates can live right on the record. Rob (AI host): Fine, the hypothetical portal is on Enterprise. Which plans get the views themselves? Dana (AI host): HubSpot's article on report, calendar, and gantt views lists Starter, Professional, and Enterprise for Marketing, Sales, Service, Data, and Content Hub, and Professional or Enterprise for Smart CRM and Revenue Hub. Rob (AI host): And where does it get switched on? Dana (AI host): Open the object's records, then in the upper right click the view type dropdown and select Gantt view. Rob (AI host): Once the bars show up, what does a user actually get? Dana (AI host): Zoom the timeline by picking days, weeks, or months from the date dropdown, and scroll with the arrows, your keyboard arrow keys, or a trackpad. Dana (AI host): Today re-centers it. Rob (AI host): And the tasks under each record? Dana (AI host): Hover on a record's name and click the plus icon to add a task, or expand to show its associated tasks. Dana (AI host): The Task status filter can show only in progress tasks. Rob (AI host): Is finishing a task possible right there? Dana (AI host): Yes, hover on it and click complete. Rob (AI host): And to reach the record behind a bar? Dana (AI host): Click the bar, and the record or task opens in the preview sidebar. Rob (AI host): Nice, fewer tabs open. Dana (AI host): One more thing before the break. The help article hasn't caught up on objects. Dana (AI host): Even after its latest update, it describes Gantt for project, deal, and service record timelines with their tasks. Rob (AI host): So the wider object list comes from the product manager, not the help pages yet. Dana (AI host): Right, and that is why we test before promising anything to a team. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Hey, it's George B. Thomas from Sidekick Strategies. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Full honesty, this is my AI voice clone, made with my permission. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): A calendar or Gantt view is only as good as the date properties behind it. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): If close dates are stale, the picture lies. George B. Thomas (AI voice clone): Sidekick's CRM Implementation maps your sales process before touching a single setting, then builds properties, pipelines, and permissions that match how your team works. Dana (AI host): Hover on a bar, then click and drag an end point to change the start or end date. Dana (AI host): HubSpot autosaves the change, so there's no separate save step. Rob (AI host): Here's my worry, then. Rob (AI host): If the bars run on custom dates, does dragging write to those custom properties? Dana (AI host): That's the right question, and it lands in what we couldn't confirm. Dana (AI host): Our research describes more objects, an hours timescale, faded bars for records missing dates, bulk actions, and task columns. Rob (AI host): And what does HubSpot's help say about those? Dana (AI host): None of those details appear there yet. Dana (AI host): Our research also says each view saves its own date settings, and the help article doesn't cover that or which property a drag updates on custom dates. Dana (AI host): Treat all of it as our research until HubSpot documents it. Rob (AI host): Got it. So where should a team start this week? Dana (AI host): Here is a plan. Dana (AI host): First, pick one object and write down the two date properties that really mark a start and an end. Rob (AI host): For me that's kickoff date and go-live date on the onboarding object. Dana (AI host): Then switch a test view to Gantt and set those properties in Gantt settings. Rob (AI host): After that, drag one bar on a test record and open the record to see which property changed. Dana (AI host): Next, use a view tab to filter for records where either date is empty, so nobody is missing from the plan. Rob (AI host): Finally, walk the people who own those dates through the view before anyone leans on it. Dana (AI host): Smart, owners first. Rob (AI host): And when a single date is all that matters? Dana (AI host): The calendar view handles that. Dana (AI host): You pick one date or datetime property and choose whether to show weekends. Rob (AI host): And for a leadership meeting, when nobody wants a timeline? Dana (AI host): Try the report view on the same tab. Dana (AI host): It charts the filtered records, takes up to four properties, and you can save the report to your library. Rob (AI host): Operations lead verdict: put Gantt on the custom dates you trust, prove the drag behavior on a test record, and keep the timeline honest. Dana (AI host): Your dates, your bars. Rob (AI host): Every source we used is linked in the show notes, and you'll find more HubSpot updates at Sidekick Strategies dot com. Dana (AI host): Thanks for mapping this timeline with us. Rob (AI host): Bars on the dates that matter. Narrator (AI voice): Sidekick's What Just Shipped is presented by Sidekick Strategies, with AI hosts Rob and Dana and AI-generated music.
