- 0:58Speaker 1: I've got my friend Tim Bert here with me. Who
- 1:03Speaker 1: And I think this is perfect because you should be
- 1:06Speaker 1: saying Tim Bird? Do I know him? Is he? Is
- 1:10Speaker 1: he a rapper? Is here? Is he an actor? Is here?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Is he a former football player? I should know who
- 1:17Speaker 1: Tim Bird is? No, Actually, that is actually the point.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You probably unless you're in Atlanta, where he is a
- 1:24Speaker 1: local hero, you a local legend, even in his space,
- 1:28Speaker 1: you would not know who Tim Bird is. That is
- 1:31Speaker 1: the point. I want all people, every black man, every man,
- 1:37Speaker 1: every Latino man, every white man, doesn't matter your race, place, whatever.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I want every man to model. Tim Burt introducing Tim
- 1:50Speaker 1: Bird of Tim Bird Enterprises, who is a friend of
- 1:53Speaker 1: mine who has an up from nothing story that absolutely
- 1:58Speaker 1: will inspire you. But he's also funny as all get up.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He's hilarious. He's like a sasquatch. If you if you
- 2:05Speaker 1: see him, he's like five times bigger than me. If
- 2:08Speaker 1: you get to see them the clips of this on
- 2:11Speaker 1: YouTube or on social you'll see my brother is you
- 2:15Speaker 1: don't mess with Tim Burt. So Tim Burt runs a
- 2:19Speaker 1: construction company. Is this is hustle economics? He was, Oh, John,
- 2:24Speaker 1: you're talking over my head. You know I don't understand
- 2:27Speaker 1: what you know. You will definitely get this. So Tim,
- 2:31Speaker 1: before we get into your personal story, which is inspiring
- 2:36Speaker 1: and some lessons you're going to give the audience and
- 2:38Speaker 1: leave folks with as they go on the journey of
- 2:41Speaker 1: their life in business and entrepreneurship and wealth creation and
- 2:45Speaker 1: cash flow, you understand something. You understand a couple of
- 2:50Speaker 1: things that you've told me over time that I just
- 2:53Speaker 1: think you're extraordinary. And if it wouldn't be offensive to
- 2:58Speaker 1: my my Jewish friend, I would say, I think you're
- 3:01Speaker 1: partly Jewish, and I mean that is the greatest compliment.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Like I've always said that black people need a Black
- 3:09Speaker 1: Jewish business plan. I think that this group of people
- 3:12Speaker 1: have found a way out of no way and really
- 3:15Speaker 1: became financially literate. And even though the world was against them,
- 3:19Speaker 1: they were for themselves and they were thrifty, and they
- 3:22Speaker 1: were smart, and they were you know, and I really
- 3:25Speaker 1: respect their achievement as a group and individually, and too
- 3:34Speaker 1: many of us a flosson black people were in the
- 3:39Speaker 1: assets on as too many of us are. And I
- 3:46Speaker 1: understand it. It's our background, is our history. We were
- 3:49Speaker 1: not allowed to get We were not taught financial literacy,
- 3:52Speaker 1: we were not taught how capitalism works. We were denied
- 3:55Speaker 1: that with the Freedman's Bank of eighteen sixty five, we
- 3:58Speaker 1: were denied. We have a darker com fflection. It's easier
- 4:00Speaker 1: to identify as segregate us, discriminate against us. There are
- 4:04Speaker 1: good reasons, good bad reasons why we don't have not
- 4:08Speaker 1: achieved because literally we've been held back at every step
- 4:13Speaker 1: as a group. Still we find a way, some of
- 4:16Speaker 1: us to succeed. Many of us actually, but some of
- 4:19Speaker 1: us extraordinarily successful. I would call you extraordinarily successful. But
- 4:23Speaker 1: because of the low self esteem that comes from the
- 4:26Speaker 1: way in which we were treated. Some of us floss
- 4:29Speaker 1: and gloss over substance. Some of us want to bling
- 4:33Speaker 1: and sing versus own and stand in that sense of
- 4:39Speaker 1: value that you created quietly. So you said something to
- 4:45Speaker 1: me many things that just had my head spinning. I'm like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: where does this guy come from? What the heck? Because
- 4:55Speaker 1: you want to try to impress anybody one? Thing you
- 4:56Speaker 1: said to me that you said to me? You said, John,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I put this in my book, Financial Literacy for All,
- 5:02Speaker 1: So you can go and watch, either listen to it
- 5:05Speaker 1: on audio tape, or go and read the book Financial
- 5:09Speaker 1: Literacy for All, number one bestseller to this day, fifteen
- 5:13Speaker 1: months after it's publishing. In the book, I cite Tim Burt,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and Tim says, you got to decide whether you want
- 5:19Speaker 1: to be famous or you want to be dangerous? All right?
- 5:24Speaker 1: What the heck did you mean by that? Do you
- 5:26Speaker 1: want to be famous? All right? This is the first
- 5:28Speaker 1: Tim bird lesson. What do you mean by you when
- 5:31Speaker 1: you're famous or dangerous? Well?
- 5:32Speaker 2: I think too many times we get caught up in
- 5:34Speaker 2: having more in our closets than we do in our
- 5:36Speaker 2: bank accounts. We put so much money into things that
- 5:40Speaker 2: don't matter that won't last beyond us. Things we can't
- 5:43Speaker 2: take beyond the grave. So in order to be dangerous,
- 5:46Speaker 2: you know, I was talking about a lot of elderly
- 5:48Speaker 2: people growing up in Atlanta, grew up in pair of homes.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I would take people trash out twenty five cents as
- 5:52Speaker 2: a kid and just make money. They will would give
- 5:55Speaker 2: me good lessons and one thing you know about elderly people,
- 5:58Speaker 2: they will always remind you who you are, where you
- 6:00Speaker 2: come from, where they come from, and what it should be.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And I always hear them talking about legacy, and you
- 6:06Speaker 2: know you gonna get the word of God. Of course,
- 6:09Speaker 2: when you hear the word, when you die, with it
- 6:11Speaker 2: matter that you live. And I started thinking about that
- 6:14Speaker 2: as I got older and start thinking about what it
- 6:15Speaker 2: is to be dangerous. And one of the things that
- 6:18Speaker 2: really grabbed me when they always put scripture to you,
- 6:21Speaker 2: a good man leaves and inherited to his children's children,
- 6:25Speaker 2: that's being dangerous. And I was like, wow, if I
- 6:28Speaker 2: die today, you know, as I got older and started understanding,
- 6:31Speaker 2: what would my kids and my family have, what would
- 6:33Speaker 2: live beyond the grade.
- 6:35Speaker 1: When I'm doing so this is a nice, sweet, wonderful
- 6:39Speaker 1: almost philosophical religious response. That wasn't that what? I what?
- 6:44Speaker 1: I remember when Tim and I were talking about this
- 6:46Speaker 1: a few years ago. He was upset, he was peed
- 6:50Speaker 1: off at some ignorance going on, and I remember the
- 6:54Speaker 1: I don't remember the context. I don't think it was
- 6:56Speaker 1: I got you. Yeah, I don't remember the context, but
- 6:58Speaker 1: I remember he was like, hey, man, like we got
- 7:00Speaker 1: to do I'm tired of this stuff. We got to
- 7:02Speaker 1: decide whether we want to be famous, right dangerous? What
- 7:09Speaker 1: we what? What got you? What is in our culture?
- 7:13Speaker 1: Because I know you love us and you want us
- 7:14Speaker 1: to be the best version of us, so to all
- 7:16Speaker 1: That's why I'm speaking truth to power. What got to
- 7:20Speaker 1: you in your gut that caused you to make that
- 7:23Speaker 1: that that powerful differentiation.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I just think the level of poverty that you know,
- 7:27Speaker 2: I was witnessing. How we can sit back sometime and
- 7:30Speaker 2: allow people to dictate to us what we should have
- 7:33Speaker 2: and what they think we should have. But when we
- 7:35Speaker 2: start knowing who we are and say, hey, look, this
- 7:38Speaker 2: is where we draw the line. I'm here to do
- 7:40Speaker 2: a service to my family, to my friends, but at
- 7:42Speaker 2: the same time the community. So when you start thinking
- 7:45Speaker 2: about making money, people start telling you what you can't
- 7:47Speaker 2: do and where you can't go, and what you what
- 7:50Speaker 2: they think you should be.
- 7:50Speaker 1: And I think you, you know, say this, If.
- 7:52Speaker 2: You don't know who you are by the end of
- 7:54Speaker 2: the day, by the morning, come somebody gonna tell you.
- 7:56Speaker 1: You might tell you who you are?
- 7:57Speaker 2: You know, and if nobody, don't get pissed off behind that,
- 8:00Speaker 2: because that means you allow other people to define you.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And I refuse to allow anybody to define me because
- 8:05Speaker 2: in business people always tell you, well, you can't do this.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Who you to tell me what I can't do when
- 8:11Speaker 2: I know why?
- 8:12Speaker 1: That's what I'm talking about. So now now you talking
- 8:14Speaker 1: about Now you're talking about so squatch. Here this is
- 8:17Speaker 1: tim Bert, who coming squash you with his brain. Okay,
- 8:21Speaker 1: so you're like, don't be celebrities, cool, but don't be
- 8:25Speaker 1: forget being famous. Be dangerous, dangerous from the neck up,
- 8:28Speaker 1: be smart, dangerous from the neck up. He's not talking
- 8:31Speaker 1: about braun, He's talking about brains. So you came rolling
- 8:35Speaker 1: up to my house one day. You came rolling up
- 8:39Speaker 1: in my house one day with a situation that I
- 8:42Speaker 1: thought was just just wild. You came rolling up in
- 8:47Speaker 1: our house with a truck I'm sorry. Half a truck
- 8:55Speaker 1: he drove up, and you know, and we have a
- 8:58Speaker 1: nice spot. Now I'm not trying to have no I
- 9:00Speaker 1: could be stuff up in my spot. I'm particular. Here's
- 9:03Speaker 1: this black man pulling up in half a truck, literally
- 9:08Speaker 1: half a truck the cab, but the back of the
- 9:11Speaker 1: truck's gone. What the heck's going on? This is a
- 9:14Speaker 1: homeless dude and made up into my property. Tim, what
- 9:17Speaker 1: was going on with half a truck man? So what
- 9:20Speaker 1: happened was what happened was to the situation that had happened,
- 9:23Speaker 1: was the situation had changed. John called me by some
- 9:27Speaker 1: things that he needed at his house. So I needed
- 9:30Speaker 1: a truck.
- 9:30Speaker 2: And I was looking all over Fine, you know, truck
- 9:32Speaker 2: prices just high, you know, like you said, I got away.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I like to spend and save money. So I called
- 9:38Speaker 2: and I was looking online. I found this truck, but
- 9:40Speaker 2: they didn't have a picture on it. And so when
- 9:43Speaker 2: I called the people, because it was f two fifty,
- 9:45Speaker 2: like a zero four for like fifty five thousand miles
- 9:48Speaker 2: on it, I was like, man, this gotta be a
- 9:50Speaker 2: great truck, but it must be wrecked or something. I
- 9:52Speaker 2: maybe could take it and you know, fix it and
- 9:54Speaker 2: do what I need to do. So I called the
- 9:56Speaker 2: people and the guy said, man, how did you get
- 9:59Speaker 2: it that quick? He said, I just literally hit saying.
- 10:01Speaker 2: I said, look, I want the truck. If it's good shape,
- 10:04Speaker 2: if it's running, I'll take it. He said, well, I
- 10:07Speaker 2: got a little problem. I said, well, whatever problem is.
- 10:09Speaker 2: If they regular it's running, I'll take it for seven
- 10:11Speaker 2: thousand dollars fifty five thousand miles.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Sir, slow down seven thousand dollars, seven thousand dollars four
- 10:18Speaker 1: and had fifty five two thousand four years. Yeah, two thousand,
- 10:21Speaker 1: had fifty five thousand miles five thousand, which is not
- 10:23Speaker 1: bad at all, bad at all. I mean, these trucks
- 10:25Speaker 1: go forever. And so you called and said I'll take it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I said, I'll take it. So he said, well, there's
- 10:31Speaker 1: one little problem. You know, the truck don't have a
- 10:33Speaker 1: bed on it. I said, in the back of the
- 10:36Speaker 1: back of the truck. Yeah, I'm trying. I'm trying to
- 10:38Speaker 1: translate to everybody. Just stay with me.
- 10:42Speaker 2: So the truck don't have a back on it, don't
- 10:43Speaker 2: have a bed on it, he said, just a frame
- 10:45Speaker 2: and just you know, just the truck but he said
- 10:48Speaker 2: it run pretty good.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I said, I'll take it.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I said, I'm on my way, and I said, do
- 10:51Speaker 2: I need to see your calls my life so you
- 10:52Speaker 2: can hold it for me.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He said sure.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He said no, just give me your name and i'll
- 10:56Speaker 2: hold it for you. He said, but you got an
- 10:57Speaker 2: hour to get here. So it was I want to
- 11:00Speaker 2: get there. It was a little further way, so I said, look,
- 11:02Speaker 2: I'm on the way. I got down there front of
- 11:04Speaker 2: the truck up he brought around. They had don't wash it,
- 11:07Speaker 2: and of course the nails back on the bed. And
- 11:10Speaker 2: the man said, man, you know what I mean, A
- 11:12Speaker 2: big mistake. I should have gotten this truck for my son,
- 11:14Speaker 2: but I couldn't send it to him because I gave
- 11:16Speaker 2: you my word. So I told him, I said, look,
- 11:20Speaker 2: here's the check. I wrote the check said.
- 11:22Speaker 1: He paid for a cash. Yeah, so he paid for
- 11:24Speaker 1: a cash because you you went and did some jobs
- 11:27Speaker 1: and construction. Because you're a general contractor. You get paid
- 11:30Speaker 1: on the general contracting job, versus taking that money and
- 11:33Speaker 1: going buying some suits and some jewelry, or or flossing
- 11:36Speaker 1: off at the clubs or whatever. You banked that money,
- 11:39Speaker 1: you set it aside. You paid your bills and then
- 11:41Speaker 1: you look for a value situation that could build you
- 11:45Speaker 1: something that can make you money and build you wealth
- 11:47Speaker 1: in the future. And you thought you thought and buying
- 11:49Speaker 1: something under market versus paying more for it than it's worth,
- 11:54Speaker 1: like people leasing luxury cards. Right now, I'm buying leasing
- 11:58Speaker 1: paying four thousand, eight thousand dollars a month. People pay
- 12:01Speaker 1: it a month or a lease on a car. They
- 12:03Speaker 1: don't own what you bought this truck for. So versus
- 12:07Speaker 1: doing all that floss and stuff your values, who you
- 12:09Speaker 1: are said, mess the heck with all that. I want
- 12:13Speaker 1: to own this truck one hundred percent, but they take
- 12:16Speaker 1: my profit and create prosperity. They have this right. That's it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So you wouldn't bought this truck. You didn't care what
- 12:22Speaker 1: it looked like.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Ken when it looked like kre who looked at me
- 12:25Speaker 2: driving even you, so that I drove up.
- 12:29Speaker 1: He was like, what the is you driving? I said,
- 12:32Speaker 1: A truck? Did I get over here? I said?
- 12:35Speaker 2: What does it represent? Transportation? It transported me from one
- 12:37Speaker 2: place to display, So I'm here. I want to make
- 12:41Speaker 2: sure everybody's hearing you one hundred percent. So Tim is
- 12:44Speaker 2: a construction dude, hes a construction company. I used this
- 12:47Speaker 2: medium stuff. He's only doing this and I asked him
- 12:49Speaker 2: to do it. But this is a great role model
- 12:51Speaker 2: for you. So so you didn't care what it looked like.
- 12:54Speaker 2: You didn't care what I had to say about it
- 12:56Speaker 2: or anybody else. You didn't care if people looking at
- 12:57Speaker 2: you crazy in the freeway. You're like, what your view is?
- 13:00Speaker 2: I own it exactly. I'll never forget this stod And
- 13:03Speaker 2: I told you we laughed about it. I pulled up
- 13:05Speaker 2: to the gas stad. You know how people come up
- 13:06Speaker 2: and ask you for money. So this one lady walked over.
- 13:09Speaker 2: She looked at me, she said, what the is you driving?
- 13:13Speaker 2: She said, I will go to ask you for some money,
- 13:14Speaker 2: but looked like you need him. I said, when you
- 13:16Speaker 2: got two dollars over this game, you wanted to take
- 13:19Speaker 2: a care? Can you help me?
- 13:21Speaker 1: Okay, I'll take you exactly, but looks to see me.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm sorry to see me. So you didn't care how
- 13:27Speaker 1: it looked. You didn't care what somebody's impression was. It's
- 13:31Speaker 1: your truck, all right. So this so now I come
- 13:34Speaker 1: up to the house one day and you know, we've
- 13:37Speaker 1: got some space and on acres, and so my man,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and by the way, he's the one who indirectly encouraged
- 13:45Speaker 1: me to we have forty acres, which goes back to
- 13:49Speaker 1: forty acres and the mule in an area in a
- 13:52Speaker 1: county that was a slave county years and years and
- 13:54Speaker 1: years and years and years ago. So if we really
- 13:56Speaker 1: thought it was a tipic of the halt of the
- 14:00Speaker 1: legacy of our ancestors that we would own forty acres, well,
- 14:04Speaker 1: Tim is the one who one of the people who
- 14:06Speaker 1: encouraged me to. You know, we don't want to give
- 14:08Speaker 1: my address, but the address of the property is has
- 14:11Speaker 1: some symbolism to it because it ties back to the
- 14:15Speaker 1: Freedman's Bank and all that. But the forty acres, Tim
- 14:19Speaker 1: was like, yeah, you gotta, you know, you gotta. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: started out of thirteen acres, you got to buy thissal wakers.
- 14:23Speaker 1: What I didn't realize that Tim also won the place
- 14:26Speaker 1: that park his crap. So hustle economic, hustle, economics. So
- 14:32Speaker 1: I come, I pull up one day. I pull up
- 14:34Speaker 1: one day and and Tim, well, there's a there's a
- 14:42Speaker 1: a dunk trailer trailer in my uh in my in
- 14:48Speaker 1: my well, on my property. I'm like, well, I didn't.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I didn't hire no dang on dunk trailer. I didn't.
- 14:52Speaker 1: What's this dunk trailer doing there? And uh, come to
- 14:56Speaker 1: find out, UH is Tim Burker. Why the heck did
- 15:09Speaker 1: you have a dump trailer on our property? And what's
- 15:12Speaker 1: the history of the dump trailer? You bought this dump trailer? Uh?
- 15:17Speaker 2: No, I didn't buy it, but I got thieves.
- 15:21Speaker 1: You had to hide out for a little while until
- 15:23Speaker 1: I got it paid. No, just kidding, Okay, So what's
- 15:25Speaker 1: the what's the history of this dump trail? So the
- 15:27Speaker 1: history of the dump trailer is Uh.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I got a call a friend of mine who was
- 15:32Speaker 2: running the manufacturer, who was actually you know, producing and
- 15:37Speaker 2: making those dump trailers, and he wanted me to come
- 15:39Speaker 2: in and do a similar pretty much on financial literacy,
- 15:44Speaker 2: peak performance and diversity and so long story short, I
- 15:48Speaker 2: went in the day before, assessed everybody, talk to the people,
- 15:52Speaker 2: went back to my hotel and put everything together, showed
- 15:55Speaker 2: up the next day, met with the executive staff and
- 15:57Speaker 2: the team, and did my prisonation and so afterwards, you know,
- 16:01Speaker 2: he said, man, that was great. You know, everybody loved it.
- 16:03Speaker 2: You know, people you know, got great reviews.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Here's your check.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I said, well, look, so.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Wait a minute, all arts, so you're not now you're
- 16:11Speaker 1: doing seminars and you're the jack of all trade exactly
- 16:15Speaker 1: talking about how did you do it? My man, it's
- 16:18Speaker 1: a slam go ahead. How did you get ther trailer?
- 16:20Speaker 2: But now you didn't steal it?
- 16:21Speaker 1: There?
- 16:21Speaker 2: I said, no, man, I'll tell you the story. So
- 16:23Speaker 2: when he handed me the check, I said, look, man,
- 16:26Speaker 2: you don't mind. I don't want to check. I'll take
- 16:28Speaker 2: one of those dump trailers out there. He said, man,
- 16:31Speaker 2: you're crazy. Why don't you check your money. I said, listen,
- 16:33Speaker 2: if I take that check from you, I got to
- 16:35Speaker 2: add probably by a notary be four five thousand to
- 16:37Speaker 2: it to get one of those trailers. So you keep
- 16:39Speaker 2: your money, keep it in your you know, slush fund,
- 16:41Speaker 2: whatever y'all need to keep it, and whatever you want
- 16:43Speaker 2: to put it. And uh, I'll just take one of
- 16:45Speaker 2: them dump trailers. He said, okay, let me go there
- 16:49Speaker 2: and talk to the people. And he was like, oh man, yeah,
- 16:51Speaker 2: give me that dump trailer. Because what they was gonna
- 16:53Speaker 2: pay me was a whole way more than what the
- 16:55Speaker 2: dump trailer that they it would cost them to produce it.
- 16:58Speaker 1: So then when yet give it to them, they hurry up.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I thought something wrong with it for a minute, but
- 17:03Speaker 2: that's how I got the dumb trailer. And I didn't
- 17:05Speaker 2: even have a truck at the time to pull it,
- 17:07Speaker 2: you know, because.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Which is why he had the truck with no back
- 17:10Speaker 1: on it. My god, my man is CEO hustle. I'll
- 17:15Speaker 1: get me back up. Please hear me. You guys, you
- 17:18Speaker 1: don't matter how to it's two ways of to make money,
- 17:21Speaker 1: make more or spend less. My man is the CEO thrift.
- 17:26Speaker 1: So you go to give this speech. The guy ready
- 17:30Speaker 1: to pay you for your speech. You're not even a
- 17:31Speaker 1: professional speaker, you're a general contractor, but you obviously articulating
- 17:36Speaker 1: people or Christmas. You're dangerous from the neck up. So
- 17:41Speaker 1: he goes to give this speech, which he's not qualified
- 17:44Speaker 1: to do. Don't tell him that. Of course he's qualified.
- 17:47Speaker 1: That's not his but it's not his trade. And they
- 17:50Speaker 1: gonna pay him, and he's like, no, I'm not really
- 17:53Speaker 1: The cash he knows is gonna disappear. He's gonna spend,
- 17:56Speaker 1: his kid's gonna spend it, his wife's gonna spend somebody's
- 17:58Speaker 1: gonna spend it. He's like he looks over you said,
- 18:02Speaker 1: how about one of those dump trailers? Yeah, I take
- 18:04Speaker 1: one of those dump trails like that. Did you know
- 18:07Speaker 1: what it was worth? Oh? Of course? So what was
- 18:09Speaker 1: it worth?
- 18:10Speaker 2: A dump trails were worth about brand new, like twelve
- 18:12Speaker 2: thousand dons. It was brand new, had never you know,
- 18:14Speaker 2: been off the lot. These are something they make that
- 18:16Speaker 2: that's the manufacturer.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And did you know what the wholesale price was the cost?
- 18:20Speaker 1: I ain't no sale prices on those on this. I mean,
- 18:22Speaker 1: did you know the cost was to buy one like
- 18:25Speaker 1: what he would pay for it? Did you know what
- 18:27Speaker 1: that price was? Oh?
- 18:27Speaker 2: Them price? They probably made it for about you know
- 18:30Speaker 2: three yeah, yeah, that what it cost them.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Yeah, so your speech fee was sufficient to cover his
- 18:36Speaker 1: costs to right about sixty rand.
- 18:38Speaker 2: But the dump trailer of twelve thousand, five hundred, so
- 18:41Speaker 2: I had to put another seats five hundred.
- 18:43Speaker 1: To get the trailer. So you just keep your check,
- 18:46Speaker 1: keep the money, give me that trailer. That's a beautiful
- 18:49Speaker 1: that's a beautiful thing. There's two ways to make money,
- 18:52Speaker 1: make more to spend less. And what he just said
- 18:55Speaker 1: is similar to how we deal with financial coaching and operations.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Hope if somebody has a charge off on their credit
- 19:00Speaker 1: report that's ten years old. If it's a thousand dollars
- 19:06Speaker 1: phone bill or something like that, well, they chased you
- 19:09Speaker 1: for that thousand dollars for two three years. They couldn't
- 19:13Speaker 1: find you. One company sold to another. They finally sold
- 19:15Speaker 1: that debt to Joe's Finance Company. Jose Dance Company's example,
- 19:19Speaker 1: bought it for five cents on the dollar fifty bucks
- 19:22Speaker 1: in It was a thousand dollars debt. So when we
- 19:26Speaker 1: called Joe's Finance company to try to resolve that debt
- 19:30Speaker 1: for the client, Jose Finance Company wants to double their money.
- 19:33Speaker 1: So they bought it for fifty bucks. They want one hundred.
- 19:36Speaker 1: But if we offer them two hundred, which is an
- 19:39Speaker 1: incredible profit for them, it's an eighty percent discount. For
- 19:43Speaker 1: my client because she owes a thousand, she's paying two hundred.
- 19:47Speaker 1: It's a two hundred percent of profit on the or
- 19:52Speaker 1: better for the Jose Finance Company's example. Everybody win. No
- 19:57Speaker 1: fair change is no robbery. Everybody walks away from that
- 20:00Speaker 1: clean in my in my client gets a credit score
- 20:02Speaker 1: a pop of forty points. That charge off comes off
- 20:06Speaker 1: of the credit report. You can't get obsessed with, oh,
- 20:10Speaker 1: we're paying this person three hundred percent of what I
- 20:13Speaker 1: owe them or whatever. The thing is, No, when you
- 20:16Speaker 1: leave a negotiation, everybody should leave slightly annoyed. That's a
- 20:20Speaker 1: successful negotiation. So you left that negotiation you you you
- 20:25Speaker 1: were you know it was more than he paid for it,
- 20:29Speaker 1: but lesson you would have had to pay for it
- 20:32Speaker 1: by one hundred percent. Yeah, you could have got caught
- 20:38Speaker 1: up with, well, what he's paying. I'm not gonna pay
- 20:41Speaker 1: any more than he paid for it. That's the wrong argument,
- 20:43Speaker 1: that's fact. That's arguing. That's emotional. Don't get emotional in business. Back,
- 20:46Speaker 1: you were not emotional in business. You were just like,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I know I could make money in my sleep because
- 20:54Speaker 1: you're charging a rental rate. He probably charged me a
- 20:56Speaker 1: rental rate for that day on that trash band put
- 20:59Speaker 1: on my property. I remember now that we did constructive
- 21:01Speaker 1: work on my property, and he probably charged me rent
- 21:05Speaker 1: while I'm trying while he's getting rent free, rent free
- 21:08Speaker 1: storage hustle. Economically he charged me, but his dang on
- 21:12Speaker 1: uh trash band. Now I'm fitting the whole situation now now,
- 21:16Speaker 1: but I mean I respect it. I mean, I just
- 21:18Speaker 1: this is this is uh, this is brilliant. So now
- 21:20Speaker 1: he takes the actually can't put this big old trash
- 21:23Speaker 1: bill on the back of that pickup truck. But if
- 21:24Speaker 1: he could, he would have. If Tim could have could
- 21:27Speaker 1: have latched that trash band or the back of that
- 21:29Speaker 1: that that F two is the F two fifty. Yeah,
- 21:32Speaker 1: well that's what I pulled it with.
- 21:33Speaker 2: But I had to go to home depot in rental
- 21:35Speaker 2: truck to drive it, and I dropped it off at
- 21:37Speaker 2: his property until I got my truck.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And then I went over there and down. So you
- 21:40Speaker 1: were able to pull that with the F two fifty.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I could pull it with, but I didn't have
- 21:44Speaker 2: a F two fit at the time.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I had fifty with with no backing on it with.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Ye, that's the one I bought to pull it with.
- 21:50Speaker 1: You did pull it? Yeah, excuse me? He was. This
- 21:53Speaker 1: is a is a real this This dude is a
- 21:56Speaker 1: hustle I incorporated. All right, So there is this other
- 21:59Speaker 1: story I want to share. You were years and years ago.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Your wife is brilliant doctor and a nice person, nicer
- 22:11Speaker 1: than you, and she's an opg in rightg obgyn and
- 22:17Speaker 1: she was starting a practice or she had a practice
- 22:20Speaker 1: and she needed an office. You correct if I'm wrong.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Most people would have rented an office. Yeah, please tell
- 22:27Speaker 1: out the audience what happened in your situation? You went
- 22:30Speaker 1: to go look at an office, and I guess you
- 22:32Speaker 1: could have rented it. Yeah, what happened? So long story,
- 22:35Speaker 1: show attention.
- 22:35Speaker 2: People got married September twenty ten. She was looking to
- 22:42Speaker 2: become a partner in the practice she was in in
- 22:44Speaker 2: twenty eleven. The owner told her didn't want to practice.
- 22:47Speaker 2: So that was around February. So August we found a
- 22:50Speaker 2: building and got her involved. But the key to it,
- 22:53Speaker 2: what do you want to know? One of the two
- 22:55Speaker 2: knows about how we bought about the property. That was
- 22:57Speaker 2: a guy who was a property four one hundred and
- 22:59Speaker 2: eighty thousand dollars what they want originally, and we just
- 23:02Speaker 2: kind of bagged off and waiting.
- 23:04Speaker 1: You could have rented something. We could have rented it
- 23:06Speaker 1: right away, you know, and he would have been happy
- 23:08Speaker 1: to reunt it to you. Yeah. Okay, So now I continued,
- 23:11Speaker 1: and so what my wife did once we start her office.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Originally, before we bought the building, we did a timeshare
- 23:15Speaker 2: with another doctor. So he was only there because he
- 23:18Speaker 2: was a surgeon. He was onned there in that area,
- 23:20Speaker 2: maybe like Monday, Wednesday and certain days like half a day,
- 23:24Speaker 2: so whatever half a day he won there, she was
- 23:25Speaker 2: gonna use it. And so I told him coming in
- 23:28Speaker 2: because he didn't need like saints and stuff like that.
- 23:30Speaker 2: He just coming check calls and do stuff like that.
- 23:32Speaker 2: They need something taking back to the hospital. So by him,
- 23:35Speaker 2: she knowed him as a friend. They you know, went
- 23:37Speaker 2: to school together and there's some you know, surgeons and
- 23:39Speaker 2: things like that together. So I went in and renovated
- 23:42Speaker 2: that office and to charge him because he was allowing
- 23:44Speaker 2: her to come in that space and use it, and
- 23:47Speaker 2: so he did a bar track. That's how we didn't.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Then we found the other building. So it's so economics.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So we found the other building that we really really wanted,
- 23:56Speaker 2: and so we went over there and looked at and
- 23:57Speaker 2: met with the owner and first like said, he wonted
- 24:00Speaker 2: four hundred and eighty thousand.
- 24:01Speaker 1: We waited and he came back to the price drop
- 24:03Speaker 1: slowed down, mister financial genius. Slow it down so people
- 24:07Speaker 1: can keep up with you. So you were going to
- 24:09Speaker 1: rent the building, you went and found a co op
- 24:12Speaker 1: situation time basically sharing a space you did some work
- 24:18Speaker 1: for the surgeon in exchange for rent. Then you found
- 24:21Speaker 1: another building that you actually wanted to have yourself. The
- 24:25Speaker 1: owner wanted four hundred and eighty thousand. What happened next.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Waited for a little while, maybe bout a year.
- 24:31Speaker 2: So then the price dropped because nobody you know, I guess,
- 24:33Speaker 2: bought it or looked at it, I had any interest in.
- 24:35Speaker 2: So he dropped it to two two five.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Where was your wife during the time that you're waiting
- 24:41Speaker 1: or she operating still in time situation?
- 24:43Speaker 2: Then the time, so patience, patience, Patience is key. Patience
- 24:46Speaker 2: is a virtue. So we meet the gentleman over there.
- 24:50Speaker 2: So my wife had a financial advisor at the time.
- 24:54Speaker 2: So we go over there and meet the owner. But
- 24:55Speaker 2: before we left, I told him we don't rent. I
- 24:57Speaker 2: want to buy it. That's that's my strong purchase it.
- 25:01Speaker 2: So we get over there. The guy said, oh, yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 2: two twenty five, twenty percent down. I wouldn't do on
- 25:05Speaker 2: the finance, and you know, I'm gonna fix the roof
- 25:07Speaker 2: and I'm gonna fix it.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I said, oh, stop right down. I don't need you.
- 25:11Speaker 2: I don't want you changing the light bulb. I want
- 25:13Speaker 2: it just like it is. So that twenty percent down,
- 25:15Speaker 2: that's like fifty thousand dollars. I said, look around here,
- 25:18Speaker 2: this place is gonna need about one hundred thousand dollar
- 25:20Speaker 2: worth for renovation. I said, so I'm gonna renovate this office.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I'm buying on my strength, not my wife. I said,
- 25:26Speaker 2: so you're talking to me, not her. Get her out
- 25:29Speaker 2: of the picture. I said, so that's my stronghold, that's
- 25:32Speaker 2: my capability. And he said, well, I just think if
- 25:35Speaker 2: you you know her financial ADVI. I was jumped in
- 25:37Speaker 2: and said, well, I think if you rented for two years,
- 25:39Speaker 2: I said, hold on, I stopped. I said, sir, let
- 25:41Speaker 2: me tell you something. We ain't doing no rent if
- 25:43Speaker 2: you want to sell them in this bill. And he's
- 25:44Speaker 2: gonna make me offer that I can't refuse, and we're
- 25:46Speaker 2: gonna take it now. If you don't want to do that,
- 25:48Speaker 2: we're gonna end this conversation.
- 25:51Speaker 1: So this dude's gagster. This is financial literacy. Gagster is
- 25:56Speaker 1: one on one, dangerous, dangerous.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Okay, continue, So the general's are okay, he said, I
- 26:01Speaker 2: got your point, and I hear you. So the next day,
- 26:04Speaker 2: this lady walks into my wife office and you know,
- 26:06Speaker 2: my wife's sister, and you know, staff was up front,
- 26:10Speaker 2: and lady came and asked, who is Tim Burrd. I
- 26:12Speaker 2: won't know what is. So here's a woman coming in
- 26:14Speaker 2: and asking these women who am I. So they looking like, hey,
- 26:17Speaker 2: what you asking that for? So she said, I'm sorry,
- 26:19Speaker 2: she said, I'm with you know. The doctor said, oh,
- 26:22Speaker 2: she's I've never seen him do this before. He sent
- 26:24Speaker 2: the keys over. He wanted twenty percent down. He said,
- 26:28Speaker 2: give him five thousand down and he'll finance it fifteen years,
- 26:31Speaker 2: six percent.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Interest, six percent interest, six percent interest. I love it,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and I said we'll take it, which is a great
- 26:37Speaker 1: rate for a commercial building. By the way, people are
- 26:40Speaker 1: complaining about one two three percent. You'll never see one
- 26:42Speaker 1: two three percent again in your life. That was free money.
- 26:45Speaker 2: That was twenty and thirteen.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Get it out your head, right right, It's okay, And
- 26:49Speaker 1: this is selling financing, which is going to be more
- 26:51Speaker 1: expensive anyway. But okay. So versus the fifty thousand dollars,
- 26:56Speaker 1: Now you convinced them you're going to improve the property exactly,
- 26:59Speaker 1: which is his property until you pay it off. So
- 27:01Speaker 1: if you default, you improved his property. He wins. He
- 27:05Speaker 1: gets the property and your improvements. By the way, don't
- 27:07Speaker 1: get mad at this. This is capitalism, This is act fair.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Change is no robberty. This is the way this works.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Don't take it personal. It's not every again, in a
- 27:14Speaker 1: great negotiation, everybody wins, slightly annoyed kept the owner didn't
- 27:19Speaker 1: get everything they wanted. Tim didn't get everything he wanted.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Actually Tim actually did got to bring the guy just
- 27:25Speaker 1: didn't know it. So now five grand down so you
- 27:27Speaker 1: can know its sell economics. Five grand down, yep, six
- 27:32Speaker 1: year term, no, fifteen years, fifteen year term, six percent interests. Right,
- 27:36Speaker 1: you're doing improvers of the property with your own with
- 27:39Speaker 1: your own construction company. So you're doing get at cost
- 27:41Speaker 1: over your time. Okay, where are we at now? Where
- 27:44Speaker 1: we are now?
- 27:45Speaker 2: We still own the building, my wife is still practicing,
- 27:47Speaker 2: and the building have gone from two twenty five. We
- 27:50Speaker 2: just kind of looked it up and did I'll let
- 27:52Speaker 2: you tell no, but he numbers.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Got yeah, So the building now is worth conservatively seven
- 27:57Speaker 1: hundred and fifty thousand dollars. It's between seven fifty and
- 28:00Speaker 1: a million. And knowing I'm not giving you the dang
- 28:02Speaker 1: on address, so you can go and harass him and
- 28:04Speaker 1: his wife, trying to sell them buy the building from
- 28:07Speaker 1: him a dollar. I'll just tell you that it's it's
- 28:11Speaker 1: somewhere here in Georgia, and it's and it was a
- 28:13Speaker 1: brilliant business move. They've they've tripled, maybe quadrupled the profit.
- 28:20Speaker 1: And if they had rented all this time. Again, we
- 28:22Speaker 1: have this short term mentality a lot in our community.
- 28:25Speaker 1: I want to get this cash, we'll get this bag.
- 28:26Speaker 1: I want to get this dollar. I want to get
- 28:27Speaker 1: this money. But all cash is is a medium of
- 28:30Speaker 1: exchanging value. That's it. It's completely overrated. What we want
- 28:34Speaker 1: to do is you build wealth in your sleep. So
- 28:36Speaker 1: Tim just gave you at least two examples, no three
- 28:41Speaker 1: examples of building wealth in your sleep. He gave you
- 28:44Speaker 1: an example of mindset. You want to be famous, you
- 28:48Speaker 1: want to be dang dangerous, dangerous from the shoulders up.
- 28:50Speaker 1: So how you're thinking about mindset, what you got from
- 28:53Speaker 1: his grandparents, got how he grew up, which which hopefully
- 28:56Speaker 1: we'll get to some lessons before we finished the podcast episode.
- 29:00Speaker 1: The second lesson he gave you was this raggedy truck.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Actually it's four lessons. This raggedy truck that he had
- 29:05Speaker 1: on my pro and I still have that truck. Actually,
- 29:07Speaker 1: he's not a raggedy truck. It just it just looks
- 29:09Speaker 1: Raggedycus doesn't have a back in on it. There's no bed.
- 29:12Speaker 1: You said, is there a bed on it yet? Nope?
- 29:15Speaker 1: You know I have a bed on that truck. It's
- 29:17Speaker 1: because you don't want to send the money if it
- 29:18Speaker 1: ain't broke, don't feel better, and you still don't care
- 29:21Speaker 1: what anybody thinks. But you're driving a state it's right.
- 29:34Speaker 1: So what was the truck worth? Do you think when
- 29:35Speaker 1: you bought it? What was the value? Man?
- 29:38Speaker 2: Two fifty two thousand and four with fifty five thousand
- 29:41Speaker 2: dollars on it? Man, you're looking up with fifteen twenty
- 29:44Speaker 2: five thousand dollars.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Really, yes, So you bought it for half or or
- 29:48Speaker 1: better because it was.
- 29:50Speaker 2: You had a back on it, and they probably just
- 29:52Speaker 2: didn't know the advantage and wanted to get rid of them.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Get it off they lot. Okay, So and guess what
- 29:56Speaker 2: I took it off?
- 29:57Speaker 1: Exactly. I drive and I'll be in account, I'll be
- 30:00Speaker 1: in the country. Sometimes I'll be driving somewhere and I
- 30:03Speaker 1: just you know, you'll drive by a property and you'll
- 30:05Speaker 1: see a truck or something, or a car or tract
- 30:08Speaker 1: or something in the backyard sort of all got stuff
- 30:10Speaker 1: on it, just covered up. The owners don't know what
- 30:13Speaker 1: that is. It maybe the father passed away. And when
- 30:16Speaker 1: my path father passed away, he had a bunch of
- 30:17Speaker 1: construction equipment. I mean, I didn't know the worth of it.
- 30:21Speaker 1: I just want to get rid of it. So we
- 30:23Speaker 1: I saw my people just sell it for whatever you
- 30:25Speaker 1: can get. Let you know, bless somebody else. So imagine
- 30:28Speaker 1: people driving by somebody's farm, ranch house just looking for
- 30:32Speaker 1: things that they don't value. But you do. That's what
- 30:36Speaker 1: you did in this situation. You valued it. You understood
- 30:38Speaker 1: the value that guy didn't. So that was the second example.
- 30:41Speaker 1: The third example was the dump trunk you left on
- 30:45Speaker 1: my thing on property charged me rent for as he
- 30:48Speaker 1: charged me calls to do the work economics right, and
- 30:52Speaker 1: he still has equipment on my property, attractor and some
- 30:57Speaker 1: other the skid that we use. You even know this
- 31:01Speaker 1: stuff that leveled my property. But that big old barrel thing,
- 31:05Speaker 1: I don't know. You can give me fresh.
- 31:08Speaker 2: But most people know him as like a bobcat. So yeah,
- 31:10Speaker 2: you bomb a brand new him because he you know,
- 31:13Speaker 2: and this propertly creates some trends.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Nah, No, he just he's using me as a storage facility.
- 31:18Speaker 1: That's what he's doing because he's he's stingy. You don't
- 31:22Speaker 1: want to spend no money, all right, That's what friends inform,
- 31:24Speaker 1: That's what friends report. So then he has this commercial
- 31:29Speaker 1: real estate deal, which I think is absolutely brilliant. And
- 31:31Speaker 1: this is the example. Like people like the young people
- 31:34Speaker 1: are like, oh, I'm tired of on this house. I'm
- 31:36Speaker 1: gonna sell his house they just bought it two years ago.
- 31:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna move into an apartment. Horrible move, really not smart.
- 31:44Speaker 1: You're gonna move in this apartment. You're gonna be flossing, chilling,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, living your best life. And ten years now
- 31:50Speaker 1: from now, you're gonna look back at that house you sold.
- 31:53Speaker 1: It's gonna be it's gonna have doubled in value. Now
- 31:55Speaker 1: you can't afford to go back in that house. You
- 31:58Speaker 1: spend all the cast that came from selling that house
- 32:00Speaker 1: on rent, You paid people like me to house you,
- 32:04Speaker 1: and now you talk from the flow up. So because
- 32:08Speaker 1: we're FLOSSI yeah, right, So this has been fantastic already.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Is there another lesson or two? You have that you'd
- 32:18Speaker 1: like to to share with the audience before me, I
- 32:20Speaker 1: want to I want to wrap up with some just
- 32:22Speaker 1: some wisdom from your growing up experience.
- 32:24Speaker 2: But what what else did you I think one of
- 32:26Speaker 2: the most important story. My wife is ob gyn. You know,
- 32:30Speaker 2: she went to school twenty four years.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Of her life. I went to skip her name because
- 32:33Speaker 1: she's Julian Adamsburg great lady.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Yep, so she's a doctor.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Here I am kid, and my wife and my wife
- 32:41Speaker 1: her friends.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Yeah, grew up in Atlanta, Georgia parent homes, went to
- 32:45Speaker 2: Archer High School and pretty much went to an under
- 32:48Speaker 2: take for a few years for the motor technology.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Never they finished.
- 32:51Speaker 2: So now we're dating and you know someone girlfriend and
- 32:53Speaker 2: they're like, what he's like one of the Tyler Perry moves.
- 32:58Speaker 2: He never went to college. And then and I had
- 32:59Speaker 2: four k is. She didn't have any kids. So long
- 33:02Speaker 2: story show, we started dating serious. So you never went
- 33:05Speaker 2: to college. One to college.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Millionaire. Ten bird's a millionaire. He's married ladies, so get that.
- 33:11Speaker 1: But he's a millionaire. Never went to college, proud of it.
- 33:15Speaker 1: But this is one of the smartest guys I know.
- 33:17Speaker 1: He'll run circles around he went to college degree. By
- 33:20Speaker 1: the way, I never went to college. Hello. G ed
- 33:24Speaker 1: out of high school, which Chris Rock called a good
- 33:26Speaker 1: enough diploma. Right, I've got, I've got, I've got two
- 33:31Speaker 1: or three honorary doctorate degrees. I've got, I've got, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 1: certificates from Harvard, Harvard University, Harvard. But I went to
- 33:40Speaker 1: community college. Right anyway? Wow? Right?
- 33:43Speaker 2: So we dating and all the friends come in and
- 33:46Speaker 2: meet me, and we talked. And one of the things
- 33:48Speaker 2: I did and I just asked everybody at the table,
- 33:50Speaker 2: was the last book you read that telling you where
- 33:53Speaker 2: you're going to your future? He's like, wow, So I
- 33:56Speaker 2: started naming some books. So long story showp. We decided
- 33:58Speaker 2: to get married, and I said, hey, we start discussing
- 34:00Speaker 2: the winding, start talking about anything. We need to buy
- 34:03Speaker 2: a piece of property, pay cash for it, because something
- 34:06Speaker 2: has to pay for.
- 34:06Speaker 1: The wedding. Is not coming out of my pocket. WHOA
- 34:09Speaker 1: say that again?
- 34:11Speaker 2: You gotta pay for this wedding.
- 34:13Speaker 1: It ain't coming out of my pocket. The wedding has
- 34:15Speaker 1: to pay for. The wedding is not coming out of
- 34:16Speaker 1: your coming out of my pocket?
- 34:18Speaker 2: You you told your wife yes, and she agreed. So
- 34:21Speaker 2: we found a place of property. This was back in
- 34:24Speaker 2: twenty ten, right after the you know, big burst. We
- 34:27Speaker 2: bought a piece of property for twenty thousand dollars.
- 34:29Speaker 1: So you took the benefit of the fact that people
- 34:33Speaker 1: were you know, in foreclosure losing their houses, which is
- 34:36Speaker 1: not your fault. It was going to happen anyway. So
- 34:38Speaker 1: now that economy's falling apart, you're going to take the
- 34:40Speaker 1: advantage of buying a property at a low at low price.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And we're about to tell the rest of the story,
- 34:46Speaker 1: but I want the audience also to listen to this,
- 34:49Speaker 1: Like eyebought properties as a result of the of the
- 34:52Speaker 1: economic disaster of a great recession of two thousand and nine,
- 34:58Speaker 1: eight nine ten. You know, out on the back end
- 35:01Speaker 1: of that, I bought a bunch of properties that went
- 35:02Speaker 1: up in value. So people don't get like all emotional
- 35:05Speaker 1: and and oh, you know you're benefiting because somebody likes Yes,
- 35:10Speaker 1: that is capitalism. That is the way I didn't. I
- 35:13Speaker 1: didn't cause the person to lose their property. Wasn't in
- 35:15Speaker 1: their their their finances caused them to go and overspend
- 35:19Speaker 1: on stuff. People make decisions that they make. I have
- 35:22Speaker 1: nothing to do with it. Timant nothing to do with it,
- 35:24Speaker 1: but was. But if a value comes to you that
- 35:26Speaker 1: you can take advantage of, then rainbows after storms. You
- 35:30Speaker 1: cannot have a rainbow without a storm verse. So so
- 35:33Speaker 1: now you you benefit from the crisis, the market crash.
- 35:37Speaker 2: And two years before the house was sold for one
- 35:40Speaker 2: two and we bought it for twenty thousand, twenty thousand.
- 35:43Speaker 2: That was in twenty ten. Okay, so held a house
- 35:47Speaker 2: rent them a big distant renovation. So it was a
- 35:49Speaker 2: three two when I purchased it. People to oh three
- 35:52Speaker 2: bedroom too bad, I'm sorry.
- 35:54Speaker 1: And I turned into a six bedroom in four bath
- 35:57Speaker 1: and we just recently sold it for two hundre in
- 36:00Speaker 1: eighty four thousand. I love that bottle for twenty thousand,
- 36:03Speaker 1: bottle for twenty sold her for two yeah, two eighty
- 36:06Speaker 1: to eighty four. And you put up how much into
- 36:09Speaker 1: it with eighty.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Pro No, you know I owned it, and so it
- 36:12Speaker 2: was me and I had like three houses on that street,
- 36:14Speaker 2: put probably about with me doing the work in my
- 36:16Speaker 2: team probably put about thirty five forty in.
- 36:22Speaker 1: This straight up us. And you said you owned three
- 36:25Speaker 1: or four properties on that street. Yeah, I didn't play
- 36:27Speaker 1: houses on that street. You b working for me, I
- 36:29Speaker 1: need to be working for him. I mean I probably
- 36:31Speaker 1: am working with him and just don't realize it. Ez
- 36:35Speaker 1: all right, and we don't have time. Maybe we'll have
- 36:38Speaker 1: you come back. We were time for all these stories
- 36:39Speaker 1: because you you also helped to build a huge church.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Yeah new Birth. I knocked on you. I did had
- 36:44Speaker 2: the pain contract long story shot. I was supposed to
- 36:46Speaker 2: be thirty five percent. I ended up doing eighty five percent,
- 36:49Speaker 2: and then I eventually started doing maintenance.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Yeah the church. Yeah, yeah, it's a huge facility.
- 36:54Speaker 2: And uh, you know, very thankful to Bishop Long who
- 36:57Speaker 2: made sure that happened, stood and make sure we had
- 37:00Speaker 2: opportunities in that church.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Eddie Long had hired you there.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Well, he made sure you know, you had minority contracts
- 37:05Speaker 2: and vendors in now, and he promised one thing. Look,
- 37:08Speaker 2: I can get you in the door and make sure
- 37:09Speaker 2: you get thirty five percent, but the rest is up
- 37:11Speaker 2: to you. So they got me in on the pain
- 37:14Speaker 2: and I had thirty five percent guaranteed, but I ended
- 37:17Speaker 2: up doing eighty five percent.
- 37:18Speaker 1: So no no handouts, no handouts like listen, I'm gonna
- 37:21Speaker 1: give you, I'm gonna This is a James Brown version
- 37:23Speaker 1: of a heard of action open the door myself. So
- 37:27Speaker 1: he opened the door, created opportunity for you. But you
- 37:29Speaker 1: have to hustle. Yes, you have to do the work.
- 37:31Speaker 1: And you want thirty five percent that contract to eighty
- 37:32Speaker 1: eighty five percent. That's fantastic. Yeah, okay, so much with
- 37:36Speaker 1: Tim Bird. You called me one I get these calls
- 37:41Speaker 1: out of the blue from Tim. You know it's straight
- 37:43Speaker 1: called me one day. Uh, I want to buy a
- 37:45Speaker 1: hundred of your books. Uh, this is financial a couple
- 37:48Speaker 1: of my books. But you want to give you want
- 37:50Speaker 1: to give them away the member of the time. You
- 37:52Speaker 1: want to give them away to young people.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I was working with your young guys, and I encourage
- 37:56Speaker 2: him to read the book and then who have give
- 37:57Speaker 2: me the best report, get like one hundred dollars. Okay,
- 37:59Speaker 2: and why don't you do that? Well, one thing we understand
- 38:02Speaker 2: to be transformed. You have to renew your mind. And
- 38:04Speaker 2: you're talking about the same thing when you had the
- 38:06Speaker 2: person who had that thousand dollars debt. It's okay, I'm
- 38:09Speaker 2: gonna help you get that debt reduced. So that person
- 38:12Speaker 2: changed their mind at that point because somebody started working
- 38:15Speaker 2: with them, start showing them the better way. From the neck,
- 38:18Speaker 2: from the shoulder, that you start thinking different when you
- 38:21Speaker 2: change your mind. See he always say, if you hang
- 38:24Speaker 2: around nine broke people, you'll be the ten. I say,
- 38:27Speaker 2: if you hang around one with the person, you'll be
- 38:29Speaker 2: number two.
- 38:31Speaker 1: That's why I can't get rid of Tim Burke. I
- 38:35Speaker 1: come out of my bathroom. There is come out of
- 38:37Speaker 1: my master lives that ever is like walk in my office,
- 38:41Speaker 1: there is Tim. Tim's bad a bad brother, mean a
- 38:44Speaker 1: good brother. You everybody needs a Tim burd in your life.
- 38:48Speaker 1: And something happens at midnight, I'll call Tim, and Tim
- 38:51Speaker 1: will I'm there. You know, you know, don't worry about it.
- 38:55Speaker 1: So our family really is blessed to happen in our lives.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Shake Truman eye. Okay, you called me one day and
- 39:05Speaker 1: said you were becoming a film producer. This is also
- 39:11Speaker 1: economics always and I was gonna be featured in this
- 39:17Speaker 1: animated fail. Let's talk about that real quickly. Yeah.
- 39:20Speaker 2: So we took john last two books up from nothing
- 39:23Speaker 2: and the financial literature all, and we took young kids
- 39:27Speaker 2: that the companies make believe village that I'm a partner in,
- 39:29Speaker 2: and we do put the partner at yet another. Yeah,
- 39:34Speaker 2: found the door and full. You know, he gave me
- 39:35Speaker 2: an opportunity to come in and be a party. So
- 39:37Speaker 2: what happened? John told me one day I was out
- 39:39Speaker 2: at the property. Hey man, I quoted you in my
- 39:42Speaker 2: book and I didn't know it. And he signed the
- 39:43Speaker 2: book and gave it to me, and I was like wise,
- 39:45Speaker 2: I'm gonna tell you where it is. Go read the book,
- 39:47Speaker 2: and so I want to make sure you can read.
- 39:50Speaker 2: You would read, So he said, I want you to
- 39:51Speaker 2: go in there and find it. I ain't gonna tell
- 39:53Speaker 2: you where it is.
- 39:53Speaker 1: So he's read the book.
- 39:55Speaker 2: So John always doing stuff to surprise me, and I
- 39:58Speaker 2: did something to surprise him. So we took the those
- 40:00Speaker 2: last two books and created a short fems. So I
- 40:02Speaker 2: think he posted, but we'll reposted again. And we took
- 40:05Speaker 2: you know, my sons and other young kids and allowed
- 40:07Speaker 2: them to do the puppetry. And they was able to
- 40:09Speaker 2: tell the story because you know everything that you say
- 40:11Speaker 2: normally your sayings, we allowed that to be put in
- 40:14Speaker 2: and we produce. I mean, it is professional. When you
- 40:16Speaker 2: see it, it's amazing and right to this day is
- 40:18Speaker 2: touching so many young people lives and parents. So now
- 40:21Speaker 2: we just finished up a program from last year and
- 40:23Speaker 2: this year working with the Marriage Cultural Affairs Office where
- 40:26Speaker 2: we take kids in and the marriage office. They paid
- 40:28Speaker 2: them to come over there and learn services that we're providing.
- 40:31Speaker 2: You know, we dat you a how to build sets
- 40:33Speaker 2: because that's part of the destruction site. We teach them
- 40:35Speaker 2: how to write, direct produce, I mean, storytelling, broadcasting, doing
- 40:39Speaker 2: it all. And I also have a food trail you
- 40:42Speaker 2: at that.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Okay, my man owns the I forgot about that. He
- 40:44Speaker 1: was the food They called me one day. It's like, hey, look,
- 40:46Speaker 1: the next time you have an event, you and you
- 40:48Speaker 1: and Shaye or you and operation over whatever, you know,
- 40:51Speaker 1: just let me know. I'm gonna bring the food trailer
- 40:53Speaker 1: over and uh you know, I'm gonna give it to
- 40:56Speaker 1: you for free.
- 40:56Speaker 2: You know, we take care of your guests, you know.
- 40:58Speaker 2: You just tell them how many numbers we will take
- 40:59Speaker 2: care you tell us menu we got you.
- 41:01Speaker 1: And and he's genuine about the free It's not like
- 41:04Speaker 1: it's not like a bait and switch. My senses, we
- 41:06Speaker 1: never talked about this again. The James Brown version of
- 41:09Speaker 1: affirmative action open the door. I get it myself. My
- 41:12Speaker 1: sense is that Tim is smartenough to know if I
- 41:14Speaker 1: get around John's friends, these corporate people, these leaders, these
- 41:17Speaker 1: billionaires and successful people, and if I impress them with
- 41:21Speaker 1: how good my service is, somebody's gonna want to hire me.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Am I right, hustle econnumbic. So he'll do it for free.
- 41:28Speaker 1: But he's really investing in himself. And we've never talked
- 41:30Speaker 1: about this, and I'm gonna take a muff for his
- 41:33Speaker 1: offer free, believe you me, but but I but he
- 41:37Speaker 1: just believes that he if people see what he's doing
- 41:39Speaker 1: and who he is, that they will be impressed with
- 41:41Speaker 1: that and they will want to invest in him, which
- 41:43Speaker 1: I think is correct.
- 41:45Speaker 2: And we will be bringing the food truck to you
- 41:47Speaker 2: don't know, we go take It's the last thing I
- 41:49Speaker 2: would say. With those kids and my son, who's ten
- 41:52Speaker 2: years old, I asked them a question, all the kids
- 41:55Speaker 2: in the camp. I said, if you could change one
- 41:57Speaker 2: thing today or in the future, what would it be.
- 42:00Speaker 2: And my teen year old said, well, Dad, I would
- 42:01Speaker 2: love to help the homeless people and help people, you
- 42:04Speaker 2: know who are challenged. I said, okay, so where we
- 42:06Speaker 2: have our studio is right up the street. You know,
- 42:09Speaker 2: homeless people's up there. And we said no, we're not
- 42:11Speaker 2: calling them homes. We call them community partners. So three
- 42:14Speaker 2: days later, I want to be there to talk to
- 42:16Speaker 2: the people. I said, Look, we're gonna come up and
- 42:17Speaker 2: I'm gonna have my kids. We're gonna bring some you know,
- 42:19Speaker 2: food trailer. We're gonna cook, We're gonna serve you. I
- 42:21Speaker 2: don't want you to move. The kids gonna come and
- 42:23Speaker 2: serve you. You're telling them what you want, they're gonna bring.
- 42:25Speaker 1: It to you.
- 42:26Speaker 2: So we pull the food trail up and we're cooking
- 42:29Speaker 2: the food live right there. For the community departments, we
- 42:32Speaker 2: don't call them homeless. We call them community departners. That's
- 42:34Speaker 2: what I told them, and it changed both of their
- 42:36Speaker 2: lives because I asked the people. I said, give the
- 42:38Speaker 2: kids something that they can always take with them, and
- 42:40Speaker 2: the kids gonna give you something that you can always
- 42:42Speaker 2: take with you in that service. And I always told them,
- 42:45Speaker 2: if you ever want to get to the top learning
- 42:46Speaker 2: how to serve, you have to come to serve and
- 42:49Speaker 2: not be serving. And that's one thing I love about
- 42:51Speaker 2: this guy. When he told me his vision in the beginning,
- 42:53Speaker 2: I want to finish. But Abraham Lincoln, the doctor King started,
- 42:58Speaker 2: I said, man, that's a tall task. You got to
- 42:59Speaker 2: be crazy. You got a balu of your mind, he said, ten,
- 43:02Speaker 2: I am, and I trust God to help me do it.
- 43:04Speaker 2: And so that's why I'm with this guy. That's why
- 43:06Speaker 2: I support him as he's.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Almost what he do, what you do. He's talking about
- 43:08Speaker 1: Freeman's Bank, by the way, as we wrapped up, and
- 43:11Speaker 1: you guys, by the way, audience, tell us whether you
- 43:13Speaker 1: want me to bring Tim Bird back for part two
- 43:15Speaker 1: of My Man's got the stories for days? He tried out, Oh, well,
- 43:21Speaker 1: you know, all well far you now come on and
- 43:27Speaker 1: give it to him, give him to him. Come on,
- 43:29Speaker 1: just give it to him. Uh, the real Tim Bird?
- 43:32Speaker 2: Please my way into the frequent Remember I was your photographer,
- 43:35Speaker 2: your person potalpic. You didn't know you had a personal
- 43:37Speaker 2: talk until I got there. What was this that the
- 43:39Speaker 2: Freedman's make Remember how your personal photographer.
- 43:41Speaker 1: At the event. Yeah, oh that's right, that's right, that's right.
- 43:47Speaker 1: He was taking pictures from me, Tim, Tim Tim is
- 43:50Speaker 1: always showing up, trying to trying to serve, trying to help.
- 43:55Speaker 1: What why what did you see? And what I'm doing?
- 44:01Speaker 1: What we're doing? Is you think was so profound and important?
- 44:04Speaker 1: That you wanted to lean into it. So thank you
- 44:06Speaker 1: for all that you've done and you supporting and volunteering
- 44:09Speaker 1: the work. Most times we does work for Operation Hope
- 44:11Speaker 1: whenever he does not send the bill, volunteer. And number two,
- 44:15Speaker 1: what is a lesson or lessons that you want to
- 44:17Speaker 1: leave the audience with today?
- 44:19Speaker 2: I mentioned the word serve, and I think that's the
- 44:22Speaker 2: greatest ability that I've watched you. You know, you serve
- 44:24Speaker 2: the community, serve people who don't even know what you're
- 44:26Speaker 2: doing for them. You're going into places bringing back the
- 44:30Speaker 2: resources to make sure we live a better life. And
- 44:32Speaker 2: when you say you want to eradicate poverty, I watch
- 44:35Speaker 2: it and I understood one thing about service. I started
- 44:38Speaker 2: studying that one thing. I realized Doctor King serving doctor
- 44:41Speaker 2: Elive and aids. Ambassador Young served Doctor King, and I
- 44:46Speaker 2: watch you serve, Ambassador Young, and that's why I serve you,
- 44:50Speaker 2: because if we do this, that's generational. This goes beyond
- 44:55Speaker 2: the grave. So when you die, it matter that you
- 44:58Speaker 2: live a lot of people see you and know you
- 45:00Speaker 2: and hear you. And to be able to help people.
- 45:03Speaker 2: And my daughter and her husband came through your problem
- 45:07Speaker 2: got me cretter straight got the financial literacy, got the
- 45:11Speaker 2: homebuying seminar, got a bank to get them approved, and
- 45:15Speaker 2: they bought the house.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, full circle to Mori and Q Prayer.
- 45:21Speaker 1: I did not know that.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Yeah, see, I told him I was gonna say, because
- 45:24Speaker 2: he always surprised me. I surprised him.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I did not. That's your daughter. Yeah, homeowner. That's fantastic.
- 45:28Speaker 1: He's a home Operation Hope. That's Operation Hope.
- 45:30Speaker 2: So it works. And I can tell anybody if you
- 45:34Speaker 2: don't know who you are, if you don't know why
- 45:36Speaker 2: you're here, I can guarantee you one thing. If you
- 45:38Speaker 2: found an Operation Hope near you. If you walk in
- 45:40Speaker 2: the bank and you see Hope inside on that door,
- 45:43Speaker 2: go in, get involved, tell those people where you are.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Don't be ashamed, don't be afraid. As you can see
- 45:49Speaker 2: when I drove that truck up on that multi million
- 45:51Speaker 2: dollar property, don't get me wrong, joining my friend, I
- 45:54Speaker 2: don't care what he thought about to serve that he needed.
- 45:57Speaker 2: That truck was bringing it.
- 45:58Speaker 1: That's right, that's true.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Laughed and we laughing, and that it was a lesson.
- 46:03Speaker 2: So never be afraid, don't be ashamed. Let people know
- 46:06Speaker 2: who you are where you are. That's how you get help.
- 46:08Speaker 2: That's how you transform your mind, and that's how you
- 46:11Speaker 2: become the person that God created you to be.
- 46:13Speaker 1: And you're able to do all the stuff you're able
- 46:15Speaker 1: to do because you live under your meetings.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Oh, most definitely, most definitely when I tell my kids,
- 46:21Speaker 2: you know, one time my son came home with a pair,
- 46:23Speaker 2: you know, expensive shoes, you know, and I told, hey, man,
- 46:25Speaker 2: get your stuff, get out of my house. He were like, what,
- 46:28Speaker 2: That's what I tell you. You would never put more in
- 46:30Speaker 2: somebody's than you put in yourself. If you don't have
- 46:33Speaker 2: that in your bank account, out of my house.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Swear manute. So he came home with some expensive shoes.
- 46:38Speaker 1: He's staying with you, stayed there free as.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Long as you want to. He was in school and
- 46:42Speaker 2: he went about, you know, I was out of the town.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Came back and I saw the shoes on the bed.
- 46:46Speaker 2: I say, you bought those? Yeah, get up my house.
- 46:49Speaker 2: I said, you would never have more on your closet
- 46:51Speaker 2: than you doing your bank account.
- 46:53Speaker 1: So you basically teld me you got it. You're on
- 46:55Speaker 1: your own now.
- 46:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but you know what he did smart lost in
- 46:59Speaker 2: economics from the neck up. He got online, put those
- 47:02Speaker 2: shoes online. So those shoes have showed me that I
- 47:04Speaker 2: sold him.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Don't don't kick me out.
- 47:08Speaker 2: Because if you get buy those shoes, yes, and you're
- 47:11Speaker 2: gonna support somebody else's been You're gonna pay you rent
- 47:14Speaker 2: in his house.
- 47:14Speaker 1: That's right that there's a lot of love in the word. No,
- 47:18Speaker 1: I love you. You need to go get a job.
- 47:20Speaker 1: I love you. But if you're gonna have these kids,
- 47:22Speaker 1: you're going to take care of them. I love you,
- 47:25Speaker 1: But if you're gonna do the crime, you're gonna do
- 47:26Speaker 1: the time. I love you, but you've got to be
- 47:29Speaker 1: responsible for your actions. There's no free lunch. If it's free,
- 47:32Speaker 1: it's probably stale. Like these kids, right, they need they
- 47:37Speaker 1: need direction, man, they need structure, and somebody's got to
- 47:39Speaker 1: tell them no. Telling them yes and patting them on
- 47:41Speaker 1: the head it's not gonna help them. I really respect
- 47:44Speaker 1: me and like me and like me like men never
- 47:46Speaker 1: respect me. So that's really cool. Sir James, who you
- 47:49Speaker 1: and I both have a relationship with. He works for me.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Sir James would say. He said he to his kids
- 47:54Speaker 1: one day they said they didn't want to go to college,
- 47:57Speaker 1: and he said well, look, you have a choice to make.
- 48:00Speaker 1: I get to put you through school, this is the son,
- 48:02Speaker 1: or to put you through a wall. Yeah, and that's
- 48:05Speaker 1: that's agreed. But I got the memo.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Yeah, one thing I say, I would never give you
- 48:10Speaker 2: adult privileges without adult responsibility. So I think too many
- 48:14Speaker 2: people give their kids adult you know, privileges without adult responsibilities.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Yeah. So I was going to ask you what it
- 48:20Speaker 1: take away piece of advice? Would you just gave it?
- 48:23Speaker 1: It is anything else you want to share before we
- 48:25Speaker 1: wrap up?
- 48:27Speaker 2: I just think, man, you know knowing who you are,
- 48:29Speaker 2: nor my God put you here. You've got to know
- 48:31Speaker 2: who you are because you don't. Just like I said, John,
- 48:34Speaker 2: always say, somebody tell you before sundown what you would be,
- 48:37Speaker 2: and that's not who you are. Never let nobody to
- 48:39Speaker 2: define you. Define yourself. Know who you are. Be bold
- 48:43Speaker 2: and be this way from the neck up.
- 48:45Speaker 1: Dangerous from the neck up. If you don't know who
- 48:48Speaker 1: you are in the morning, by then at time, somebody's
- 48:50Speaker 1: going to tell you who you are. Okay, this has
- 48:53Speaker 1: been Money and Wealth on Black Effect Network and iHeartRadio.
- 48:57Speaker 1: This is Tim Bird of ten burd Enterprises're gonna look up.
- 49:00Speaker 1: You have a website denb Enterprises that oh make believe
- 49:03Speaker 1: village dot com. That's where we may believe Village just
- 49:06Speaker 1: one of his partnerships. What about your construction construction companies
- 49:08Speaker 1: and on. I kind of retired and turned over to
- 49:10Speaker 1: my son. So he's running it now. He's building them,
- 49:14Speaker 1: pay you, paying your licensing fee or some kind of
- 49:16Speaker 1: an override. It's nothing. I know he's getting paid, be
- 49:21Speaker 1: clear about that.
- 49:21Speaker 2: But we get more into the real estate now looking
- 49:23Speaker 2: at by laying and started developing.
- 49:25Speaker 1: So that's why I'm hanging with That's yeah. So he's like,
- 49:28Speaker 1: I noticed he's in my pocket. It's just it's just
- 49:30Speaker 1: not a hitch. He's not need to talk to you,
- 49:34Speaker 1: and he's not to get me to write a check.
- 49:37Speaker 1: He just wants to pick my brain. He wants to
- 49:39Speaker 1: pick my brain so he can go and replicate, because
- 49:42Speaker 1: most great things in life or copy, which by the way,
- 49:44Speaker 1: is very very smart, much smarter to pick somebody's brain
- 49:47Speaker 1: and pick their pocket. Picking their brain last longer smart
- 49:51Speaker 1: from that cup. So he's he's buying houses, rehabbing them,
- 49:54Speaker 1: selling them, buying rehabbing them, renting them, which is what
- 49:56Speaker 1: I did with the promise. Homes Company when I owned it,
- 50:00Speaker 1: so kudos to you. There's been money and Wealth on
