- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam's clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. This is a session all about
- 0:44discarding the beliefs that would lead to anxiety.
- 0:49I was working with a client that would get quite anxious when
- 0:52they were doing presentations, public speaking or even just
- 0:55important meetings. And it came from a previous
- 1:00traumatic event where they had a panic attack in those kind of
- 1:03situations. And from that point onwards, the
- 1:06brain was on high alert to warn them against that horrible
- 1:10feeling in certain situations. And it wasn't based on their
- 1:14capabilities. They were clearly a capable
- 1:17communicator, even a capable presenter.
- 1:20It's just that they had certain beliefs or fears of what if I
- 1:25get anxious in that situation? And what this client was using
- 1:29was a form of anxiety medication called a beta blocker.
- 1:34And what they found is that they would take that before certain
- 1:37situations and it would help. But here's the interesting
- 1:40thing. They had no idea whether it was
- 1:42the medication that was helping or the belief that the
- 1:46medication would help but actually made them feel more
- 1:49resourceful in that situation. And I call this Dumbo's feather.
- 1:54And it comes from a Disney film from many, many years ago, I
- 1:57think in the 1940s or 1950's, the story of Dumbo, this
- 2:01elephant with big ears that can fly.
- 2:03But if you remember that movie, Dumbo has a black feather, a
- 2:08feather given to him by a crow. And Dumbo starts to believe that
- 2:13it's the magic feather that enables him to fly rather than
- 2:17his huge ears. Now, Dumbo's feather for me is
- 2:21essentially the placebo effect, the belief that something will
- 2:25work, then makes it work. But in the movie of Dumbo, he's
- 2:29in this circus, in this very, very high ladder and he loses
- 2:34the feather while he's halfway down and before he crashes into
- 2:38the floor of the of the circus, he then trusts his own
- 2:44resources, his own capabilities, and then can fly without the
- 2:48feather. Now for this particular client,
- 2:52it was my belief that they clearly had the resources and
- 2:55the capability to not need anti anxiety medication, but they
- 3:00needed evidence to prove that that was true.
- 3:03So this idea of doing the thing and not needing the medication
- 3:08would be what's called a convincer strategy to give them
- 3:11irrefutable evidence that they didn't need it.
- 3:13And once they don't need it, then the evaluation says I can
- 3:17handle this and then that becomes a new self fulfilling
- 3:20prophecy. So I want you to think of
- 3:23something that you are anxious about and maybe you do something
- 3:28to give you some kind of a help. I used to have social anxiety
- 3:32and I would drink alcohol and that was Dumbo's Feather for me.
- 3:36I believed that if I had alcohol then that would give me the
- 3:39social confidence I needed in certain situations.
- 3:43It was never true, but I believed it to be true and
- 3:46because then I would drink that felt like I then needed it.
- 3:50And there is a real danger that these things that you believe
- 3:53can help instead of helping become a crutch that you become
- 3:56dependent on. So think of something in your
- 3:59life that you feel that you need some help or you struggle to do
- 4:04that. And then this hypnosis is all
- 4:06about instilling the kind of self belief for you to just do
- 4:10that thing without any additional resources at all.
- 4:13And once you do that a few times, it becomes impossible.
- 4:17To go back and feel. Like you need that additional
- 4:20help because you've got irrefutable evidence that you
- 4:22don't. And that becomes a self
- 4:24fulfilling. Prophecy again, because
- 4:26experience is the best. Reference to.
- 4:29Back up a belief system if you like the idea of having a
- 4:34customized or bespoke session specific to your needs.
- 4:38There will be a link in the description where you can
- 4:40schedule a completely free consultation call.
- 4:42Or you can check out my website, adamcox.co.uk.
- 4:47Book the free consultation call there for now, though, you might
- 4:50get some real value from this session.
- 4:53Find a quiet, comfortable place, the kind of place where you're
- 4:56not going to be interrupted or distracted.
- 4:59Relax and. Enjoy the session.
- 5:18Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in.
- 5:26That's long, long, relaxing breath of relaxation.
- 5:33And as you exhale, just feel a wonderful sense of release, as
- 5:40if any tension, stress, and worries are leaving your body as
- 5:45you exhale. And as you exhale, continue the
- 5:51outward breath for longer than you normally would.
- 5:57And then when you breathe in, breathe in for deeper.
- 6:03And the deeper you breathe, the more resourceful you feel.
- 6:08And the longer you breathe out, the more stress, worry or
- 6:13tension it starts to leave your body, each breathtaking you
- 6:20deeper and deeper, relaxed. That's it.
- 6:31And I want you to use the power of your imagination to imagine a
- 6:40futuristic room. And the room has a large screen,
- 6:49almost like a private cinema, and on a table nearby there is
- 6:58something that looks like a futuristic virtual reality
- 7:03headset. But I want you to imagine
- 7:09looking at the screen first and seeing you in your past when you
- 7:16were confident, resourceful, and relaxed.
- 7:22Even if you were communicating to a big audience, even if you
- 7:27were being evaluated, even if people were assessing what you
- 7:32were doing, that version of you from your past was absolutely
- 7:39fine, perhaps even enjoyed it. I want you to imagine mimicking
- 7:49the breathing, the facial expressions of that version of
- 7:53you. And I want you to imagine
- 7:57thinking what you thought back then, what evaluations you were
- 8:04making when you did whatever that thing was.
- 8:11Maybe evaluations like I'll be fine, I can handle this, this is
- 8:17easy for me, no big deal. And just notice that the
- 8:24evaluations back then were two things that you had the
- 8:32capabilities, you knew enough or had prepared enough.
- 8:38And secondly, it was a low stakes environment.
- 8:44Nothing to worry about because it's no big deal.
- 8:50I want you to get a sense that there are three ingredients to
- 8:56either increase or decrease anxiety.
- 9:02The first ingredient is evaluating how capable you are.
- 9:10You say to yourself, I don't know what I'm doing.
- 9:13Anxiety may go up. You tell yourself you've done
- 9:18this many times before. Anxiety goes down.
- 9:26The second ingredient is the stakes.
- 9:31You tell yourself this will be humiliating, embarrassing,
- 9:36devastating for my career. Anxiety will go up.
- 9:42You make evaluations that it's just a talk, just a
- 9:47presentation. People are more interested in
- 9:53themselves than they are in me. This is no big deal.
- 10:00Anxiety goes down, and I wonder if your brain could treat it
- 10:09like a game. A game of evaluating that you
- 10:14have the skills, resources and preparation required and that
- 10:21it's no big deal anyway. That in the big scheme of
- 10:25things, in a world of wars, famine, geopolitics and
- 10:34scandals, this thing is tiny. And if your unconscious believes
- 10:43that you have that ability to assess accurately your
- 10:48capabilities and assess accurately the importance of
- 10:53this thing, let me know if I'm nodding your head.
- 11:03That's it. And the third ingredient is just
- 11:11your Physiology, how you breathe, how relaxed you are.
- 11:19I want you to get a feeling that all you need to do to calm your
- 11:23nervous system down is 3 or 4 long outward breaths.
- 11:31It activates that parasympathetic nervous system,
- 11:35the part of you that rests and digests, the part that helps you
- 11:41drift off into sleep. People don't realize that when
- 11:46they're anxious, they breathe shallow from the chest.
- 11:50So those long, deep, diaphragmatic breaths are all
- 11:55you need to help you really feel more and more relaxed, more and
- 12:06more comfortable. That's it.
- 12:16And I want you to get us feeling that you are unlocking a new way
- 12:22of thinking. Whenever you avoid something,
- 12:28you're programming your mind to perceive it as dangerous or a
- 12:32threat. Whenever you volunteer, you're
- 12:38communicating to your unconscious that your resources
- 12:42can handle this demand. Consider fear like shadows or
- 12:48darkness, and action like light. The more action you take, the
- 12:58more that fear disappears. I want you to imagine seeing
- 13:05that screen yourself in a future meeting, presentation or talk.
- 13:13I want you to see that version of you relaxed, calm, confident,
- 13:19like something has shifted. That version of you internally
- 13:25is making evaluations and assessments that you can handle
- 13:29it. It's a low stakes thing anyway,
- 13:33and your body is relaxed and calm and I want you to see that
- 13:39version of you not needing anything else to help.
- 13:46Like Dumbo without Dumbo's feather.
- 13:49Dumbo never needed the magic feather, but it took losing the
- 13:56feather to realize they didn't need it.
- 14:01And I want you to think of what's been your magic feather
- 14:04in the past. I want, If you've been clutching
- 14:08onto that all this time and didn't need it anyway, see
- 14:17yourself without needing anything, doing well-being fine.
- 14:21And just imagine a month of saying yes to everything you
- 14:25possibly could. Leading more presentations, more
- 14:32group talks, talking more on video calls, volunteering to
- 14:40maybe chair a committee, host a presentation, do a talk, do
- 14:45something educational. And I want you to get a sense if
- 14:50your unconscious believes that if you said yes to everything
- 14:55you've been avoiding for a month and didn't need anything to help
- 14:59you, would that be enough to banish this fear?
- 15:06And if your unconscious believes that it would be enough, let me
- 15:08know by nodding your head. And if it needs something else,
- 15:23think of what that other thing would be.
- 15:28Maybe it's a bigger challenge, a bigger audience, when you're
- 15:33clear on what that thing would need to be to give you
- 15:38irrefutable evidence that your fear is gone and you're clear on
- 15:41that. Let me know by nodding your
- 15:42head. That's it.
- 15:51And now that's your goal. The Stoics believed that
- 15:58whatever the barrier was, was the way.
- 16:03Whatever that thing was they were avoiding was exactly the
- 16:08route to pursue. And I want you to get a sense
- 16:13that that's how you feel now. So imagine putting on that
- 16:17virtual reality headset, dialing up confidence, self belief,
- 16:26activating all of the resources from your past.
- 16:30And then imagine saying yes to everything that you've been
- 16:34avoiding. And imagine feeling how good you
- 16:38would feel to be in meetings and feeling relaxed to be speaking
- 16:45in groups, sitting or standing, feeling calm, confident and
- 16:49relaxed. Get a sense of feeling so
- 16:54relaxed even on video calls with 1020 thirty people or more.
- 17:00It all makes you feel completely calm and relaxed.
- 17:06That's it. And you've watched films where
- 17:14they have a montage like Rocky training for a fight.
- 17:21They can collapse days, weeks, even months into minutes.
- 17:26And with this VR headset, imagine you're doing that.
- 17:28A whole month of saying yes to things you've been avoiding from
- 17:34a first person perspective, all going well, not needing anything
- 17:41to help, not needing to prepare too much.
- 17:47Maybe there was a bit of anxiety for the first 2-3 four times,
- 17:51but that dissipates quickly. Experience that montage and then
- 18:00imagine what victory would feel like.
- 18:06A month of doing something or doing that challenging thing,
- 18:11and then feeling that you have indeed faced your nemesis.
- 18:17But to face a nemesis, you can't avoid it.
- 18:21You have to do the thing you've been avoiding and fearing so it
- 18:25loses all power over you. And when you've imagined doing
- 18:31that and feeling confident and resourceful while doing it, let
- 18:36me know by nodding your head. Hands in and each time you
- 18:59listen to this, you will be priming more and more calm,
- 19:04confidence, more resources, more self belief.
- 19:10You will be awakening all of those neural pathways from your
- 19:13past. That has already.
- 19:15Done this successfully many many times before.
- 19:20Some people think of FEAR as an acronym, false evidence that
- 19:25appears real. But how will you know what is
- 19:30real or not if you don't call its bluff?
- 19:36By doing the thing and feeling confident and calm.
- 19:42FEAR cannot coexist. Imagine taking the VR headset
- 19:47off, seeing yourself on that screen a year from now, doing
- 19:53something that would have been impossible for you had you not
- 19:57banished this fear and see it going well one year from now.
- 20:06Because when you go through the barrier of anxiety, many doors
- 20:14of opportunity open. And I wonder what opportunities
- 20:18you see in your future. That are on the other side of
- 20:24this barrier. You've been avoiding the very
- 20:30door you were meant to walk through, and now you will feel
- 20:34resourceful and motivated to do what your unconscious was urging
- 20:41you to do for so long. You don't need a crutch.
- 20:47You don't need a feather, you don't need a pill.
- 20:52You just need to trust that your capabilities exceed these
- 20:57demands and allow real experiences and real evidence to
- 21:02prove you right. It's time to float back to the
- 21:06present. Now take a deep breath in
- 21:07through your nose and out through your nose.
- 21:12Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your toes.
- 21:13Connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now count
- 21:18from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 21:22Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8.
- 21:29Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910.
- 21:32Wide awake. Wide awake.
