Latest / The SPY Trader / Rate Cut Reality Check: Inflation and the Rotation Trade
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome back to Spy Trader , the podcast dedicated to prepping your portfolio for the week ahead .
- 0:06I'm your host , Chip Dip , and it's 5 am on Sunday , December 14th , 2025 , Pacific time .
- 0:14Grab your coffee , because we have a volatile week brewing that could make or break the yearend rally .
- 0:20The big story coming into this week is the continuation of the mixed market volatility , driven by the Federal Reserve's dovish pivot .
- 0:28Last week , the Fed cut the Fed Funds Rate by 25 basis points , bringing the policy rate down to a range of 3.50% to 3.75% .
- 0:40That officially ended the 4% rate era , signaling that the Fed is increasingly confident in a ' Goldilocks' soft landing : continued growth with subdued inflation .
- 0:51The immediate result of this rate cut has been a fierce rotation trade .
- 0:56We are seeing capital aggressively shift out of expensive , highflying Growth stocks and into more reasonably priced Value , Cyclical , and SmallCap sectors .
- 1:06This is evidenced by the fact that the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index are hitting fresh alltime highs , while the techheavy Nasdaq Composite has been struggling to keep up .
- 1:20Now , let's talk about the upcoming volatility .
- 1:24While the sentiment is moderately bullish overall due to the rate cut , the market is facing a packed schedule of three delayed , highimpact economic releases this week that will test the Fed's dovishness .
- 1:35On Tuesday , we get the Nonfarm Payrolls report for November .
- 1:40A soft job report will be welcomed by the market , as it reinforces the Fed's desire for future cuts , which is bullish for equities , particularly Financials and Small Caps like IWM .
- 1:53But a hot report could stall the whole show .
- 1:56Wednesday brings Retail Sales , which will confirm whether the American consumer remains resilient or is showing signs of fatigue .
- 2:05This will directly impact Consumer Discretionary stocks , including global brands like NIKE .
- 2:11But the main event is Thursday , when we get the Consumer Price Index , or CPI , for November .
- 2:18This is the single biggest catalyst of the week .
- 2:22A cooler CPI confirms inflation is easing , leading to a massive rally , especially in highly sensitive sectors like Technology ( QQQ ) , whose valuations rely heavily on lower longterm interest rates .
- 2:36Conversely , a hot CPI could instantly halt the recent market rally .
- 2:41Given this backdrop , our analysis points toward capitalizing on the rotation trade while hedging against inflation risk .
- 2:48The sectors we expect to outperform are those tied to economic growth and lower borrowing costs .
- 2:55Financials ( XLF ) and Industrials/Materials ( XLI ) are clear Overweight choices , as they benefit directly from reduced debt costs and improving growth expectations .
- 3:06Pay close attention to FedEx ( FDX ) earnings on December 18th ; strong guidance on shipping volumes would be a huge tailwind for the entire Industrial sector .
- 3:17For trading recommendations this week , keep it simple .
- 3:21First , establish or expand your core long position in Value and Cyclicals .
- 3:27A good way to do this is buying into the iShares Core S&P Value ETF ( IVE ) or the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund ( XLI ) .
- 3:38This is the structural move for the next few months .
- 3:40Second , use caution in highvaluation Growth names .
- 3:44Ahead of Thursday's CPI , we recommend reducing exposure or aggressively tightening stops on Growth ETFs like the Invesco QQQ Trust ( QQQ ) .
- 3:55Technology valuations are simply too exposed to an unexpectedly hot inflation reading .
- 4:00Finally , keep an eye on the bond market as an inflation hedge .
- 4:04If CPI is cool , watch the longterm bond ETF , TLT , rally hard .
- 4:10If CPI is hot , TLT will sell off , signaling that the rate cut was perhaps premature .
- 4:16That’s your market prep for a highly volatile trading week .
- 4:19I’m Chip Dip , and this has been Spy Trader .
- 4:22Trade smart , manage that risk , and we'll catch you next time .
