- 0:31We go to Indianapolis right now. Jeff Legwald is brought to you by
- 0:35Betsafe Colorado, the exclusive club for passionate gamers and betters across the States.
- 0:39Jeff Lagwald, how you doing, man, I'm great. We're doing well,
- 0:43Jeff. The Peyton's talk Sean and George and anything that was said today
- 0:51that you were like, ooh, a hint was dropped, a direction was
- 0:57perhaps, uh, you know, for shadow or anything like that. You
- 1:02had your ears perked up. What you hear today, you know, Nat,
- 1:04I'll tell you I think the just the tone and how they approached answers,
- 1:11you could tell a lot of the sort of hey, it could all
- 1:15still work out with Russell was really just lip service that you know they're acting
- 1:21and using past tense and all of these things, that it will be over,
- 1:26I think unless there's some remarkable intervention with owner CEO Greg Penner when they
- 1:32get back from the combine next week. But it sounds like they will have
- 1:38an organizational set of meetings when they get back from the combine next week that
- 1:42Greg Penner will be included in. And after that I think we get the
- 1:47formal decision on Russell Wilson, and just from working the rooms here, I
- 1:53think the Jared Stidham and veteran quarterback to be named later is the bridge idea.
- 2:00Unless one of these rookies they think they can actually have a shot at
- 2:07in the draft, wows them and you know in this process, or they
- 2:12meet somebody here they really think they should dive into a little more, all
- 2:16right, you know. To that point, it was funny because George Payton
- 2:21was asked both about moving up and moving back, and he said, clearly,
- 2:24as you would guess, it's easier to move back than to move up,
- 2:28mainly because you're taking the offers and not trying to put one together.
- 2:31What do you think is more likely after talking everybody out there, Well,
- 2:38I mean, there's a lot of ground to cover before you know that really
- 2:43would happen in terms of pro days and the rest of it. I think
- 2:49it's very clear that the run could really be on quarterbacks, and they may
- 2:53be out of luck if they can't move up at all, But they would
- 3:00be left with a very very very good player on the board who could be
- 3:05like a ten to twelve year player, but just not a quarterback. And
- 3:08I think that's what they're going to have to wrestle with when when the draft
- 3:13weekend rolls around, because the quarterbacks are going to be overdrafted because they always
- 3:19are. But given that most people are not real confident about next year's class
- 3:23already, I think the run could be a little more vigorous this year,
- 3:28and they could be left out because they really have no firepower to move up
- 3:32without trading. You know what little talent they have right now, or you
- 3:38know what little top tier talent they have right now on their roster. A
- 3:43vigorous run. Jeff Legwall joins us from Indianapolis. Leggie, we played the
- 3:49comments from Sean Payton about Marvin Mims. You know, when you're talking about
- 3:53how many good players does this team have guys with potential, guys that very
- 3:59well could be you know, real difference making talents as a part of this
- 4:03team. Marvin Mims is a guy that jumps off the page. He's already
- 4:05gone to one Pro Bowl, albeit as a special teamer. What did you
- 4:11make of Sean Peyton's comments on Marvin Mims and what does that pretend for what
- 4:15his role could be next year. I think they have big plans for him,
- 4:19Nate. I mean, you know, in retrospect, I think even
- 4:24Sean Peyton would admit they did not get the rookies involved enough. I do
- 4:29know in house they feel like Riley Moss could be ready to be the corner
- 4:35opposite of Pets or Ten, that that really is realistically an option for that
- 4:41instead of having to go in a free agency or using that first rounder on
- 4:46a corner they like, really like Riley Moss. When they went through their
- 4:51review meetings right after the season, that was one player I know for a
- 4:57fact they talked about a lot and trying to get him on the field,
- 5:00and I think, you know, I think one of the things Sean Payton
- 5:04would have to put on his lists that didn't go as well as they should
- 5:09have is they did not get the rookie class involved, and it's a rookie
- 5:14class they like in house, So it's really a quirk of the season.
- 5:17You know. It's not like they were, you know, all in for
- 5:21some kind of Super Bowl run, and yet they still didn't get the young
- 5:25guys on the field. And that is one aspect that their their cap situation
- 5:31and their draft picks situation this year is going to force them to they are
- 5:35going to have to put the twenty twenty three draft class on the field next
- 5:40year. In a lot of ways, Hey, Leggie, I maybe this
- 5:43I should probably hold my water on this question. This would probably better be
- 5:46better for a day where we're hanging out in studio we can really expand on
- 5:50things. But still, I mean what you just said right there sort of
- 5:54sparked something that I've kind of wondered about this team. And this question might
- 5:59sound dumb on the sir, But in some ways, Leggy, and in
- 6:02many different facets of the team, did the winning streak kind of mess things
- 6:08up a little bit last year in terms of the plan, in terms of
- 6:12the development, in terms of getting this organization in the best place it could
- 6:16be going forward. You know this upcoming season and beyond. You know,
- 6:23I don't think it's the win streak. I know where you're going, and
- 6:26I I feel that I think it's what happens. It's like when you want
- 6:30a young player to work on a particular item in his game, you can't
- 6:35really get that done during the season. And I think I think coaching staffs
- 6:40especially think so short term during the season. This week, you know,
- 6:46that's their vision this week, and pretty soon it's past Thanksgiving, and these
- 6:53guys you want to get playing time, you haven't. You haven't done it
- 6:57because you're into this week. You know, we gotta get X number of
- 7:00snaps for this veteran guy or we can't play, you know, he said,
- 7:04He said multiple times now that couldn't get Marvin on the field more because
- 7:10you know, he plays the same position as Judy. Well, you know,
- 7:14it just shows that they're so dialed into dealing with the opponent that they
- 7:19don't always deal with the ten thousand foot issues, which is uh and the
- 7:26and the just the simple fact the NFL regular season is not a developmental time
- 7:32and it just it just doesn't work like that unless it happens organically, and
- 7:38he forced to put a guy on the field and he just you know,
- 7:43he just takes off from there. But you know, their situation right now,
- 7:47I think will keep them out of that. Next year, they're gonna
- 7:50have to play young players and they're gonna have to deal with it, and
- 7:55they're gonna have to get it right when they pick them because that they're gonna
- 7:59have to be on field this time, they won't have the luxury or the
- 8:03mistake of not playing them. All right, Jeff, you know, you
- 8:07and I have covered a lot of drafts together, going way back to when
- 8:11I was at the other place. So I just want you to give everyone,
- 8:16give me, give everyone your philosophy on the lying season, because again,
- 8:22you know, we're seeing it again. The Broncos are meeting with JJ
- 8:24McCarthy, the oh they're going to talk about which first off, they ought
- 8:26to interview every quarterback there. You know, they maybe even ought to fly
- 8:30a couple in if they can, frankly, with what's going on. But
- 8:35is some of that true? Is some of its smoke? Does it depend
- 8:37on the situation? Where do you fall on this early info getting out about
- 8:41who's meeting with who? You know they to say anybody's infatuated or falling in
- 8:48love or really push this guy up the board. All that stuff is not
- 8:52true most of the time. That players don't move that far on a board
- 9:01already, and even overall, even from the beginning of draft prep before the
- 9:07college football season till the weekend before the draft, players don't often move that
- 9:13far on the board. When you hear that stuff, and I got news
- 9:16for you, the Broncos and every single team here at the combine will meet
- 9:22or talk to face to face with a position coach, a scout, the
- 9:26head coach, the GM somebody or everybody in the organization. They will get
- 9:33face to face with every single player who's here. And that's just a fact.
- 9:37That's how they do it. You know, the sit downs they have
- 9:41to schedule and are a little longer, but they'll they'll get in front of
- 9:45every quarterback here in some fashion and they will likely put most or all of
- 9:48them through some kind of video quick video test to see what their aptitude is
- 9:54for diagramming and retaining information. They'll give them, they'll give them some quick
- 10:01looks at formations and groupings, and then they will tell them to put their
- 10:05notes away, and then they'll have them review it really quick. But they'll
- 10:09do that with every every position, not just quarterback. But that's that's what
- 10:13you're doing here at the combine. So when you hear so and so sitting
- 10:18down with so and so, I wouldn't give that a lot of action because
- 10:20they're getting in front of virtually all or all players who are invited here.
- 10:28That's the whole point of this. Doing this in one place is so you
- 10:31can get in front of them. Hey, Mike, you one last thing
- 10:33I want to ask you about, and again Jeff Lakewold with us on the
- 10:37Ramos Law Hotline, I want to ask you about your other area of expertise,
- 10:41which is sports writing, okay, which is a big part of your
- 10:43job. A guy that undoubtedly is on the mount Rushmore of pro football writers.
- 10:50Peter King announcing his retirement in his column this week in his Football Morning
- 10:56in America column, God, I've read Peace King every Monday for twenty some
- 11:01odd years now, and it just it's been a part of my Monday prep,
- 11:07getting ready for the radio, and just a part of enjoying and experiencing
- 11:11the NFL. Peter King, I know, is a friend of yours.
- 11:13You are mentioned routinely inside his great column. But for those of you in
- 11:20the business, what what is what does Peter King mean to that profession?
- 11:26I think what Peter was able to do was take a platform that allowed that
- 11:33kind of expansive reporting and just h and the fact he would turn it on
- 11:39Sunday night, you know, stay up all night and file that baby at
- 11:43like five in the morning so it was ready to roll. And you know,
- 11:48those things are all difficult and hard to do with the kind of information
- 11:54he had and the sources he had and his you know, he took was
- 12:00a really cool job and just made it his and almost created a format for
- 12:07others to do notes, you know, notes columns or you know, multiple
- 12:13items and deal with that kind of of depth. But you know, his
- 12:18source list was impeccable. I think everybody who dealt with Peter over the years
- 12:22in the league felt like he was honest and fair and he knew where he
- 12:26stood and he tried to get it right every time. And I think Peter
- 12:31also adapted to the digital age a lot faster than a lot of my peers
- 12:37or his peers did. I think he was able to see it coming and
- 12:43adapt, and you know, he was adding video to his you know,
- 12:48that collection of stuff, you know when he especially when he moved to NBC,
- 12:50and then you know, just just pulling that off every week is such
- 12:54a heavy lift, and it was just part of who he was and what
- 12:58he did and and uh, he took an awesome forum and just expanded it
- 13:05into must reading and you never really heard anybody say, you know, you
- 13:09know, Peter's been very public about a couple of things he thought he didn't
- 13:16get right and he regretted in his career. But you routinely he he hit
- 13:22the hit the ball on the on the seams. I mean, he just
- 13:24hit it every time line drives. And we probably won't see anyone with that
- 13:31kind of platform, uh doing it that way again in this day and age,
- 13:37And you know, it's you know, for me personally, there's there's
- 13:41an awful lot of guys I've spent a lot of time around in the business
- 13:45who are retiring or getting bought out or moving on. And it's a little
- 13:50bit odd, but uh, I think he probably deserves to take a break
- 13:56because that I'm not sure folks would understand what a heavy lift that was every
- 14:01week, and he did it with a smile on his face and with the
- 14:05drive to keep doing it the next week too. Yeah, ten thousand words
- 14:09every single Sunday night. I mean, when there was a big play,
- 14:13when there was a big moment, a controversial moment, whatever it was,
- 14:16Man Peter talked to those guys, and those quotes were in his column the
- 14:18very next day. It was must read stuff, the great Jeff Legwold.
- 14:22Everybody, ESPN is where you watch him, where you read him. He'll
- 14:26be reporting on all the Broncos nonsense from the combine. Leggy, good stuff,
- 14:30buddy, thank you, thanks fellows. We'll see it.
