- 2:15Club presenting their annual Valentines event happening at Embassy Suites in Charleston coming up here
- 2:20in a couple of weeks. Robert stone Street is going to join us to
- 2:23talk about that as well. But before we get into all that, we
- 2:24got breaking news. Let's go to the newsroom. Jeff Jenkins is with us
- 2:29right now. Jeff fla good morning, lead story and photo posts aw Metronews
- 2:32dot com pleece and Charleston investigating a murder at the Tobacco and Pipe Shop on
- 2:37Seventh Avenue. Breaking details Just in the last thirty minutes. Where are we
- 2:42on the story? So there's been an arrests made, so police have now
- 2:46identified the victim in this The clerk was killed. He's a nineteen year old
- 2:52from Dunbar. Kate and Martin was shot multiple times last night at Tobacco and
- 2:55Pipe store which is on Seventh Avenue over in North Austin. And police also
- 3:01so they released the name and also announcing that they made an arrest overnight.
- 3:06A fourteen year old boy was charged with the murder and the robbery. And
- 3:12they say that from their investigation, which I'm assuming it's probably some video surveillance,
- 3:19that the fourteen year old entered the store and he brandished the gun,
- 3:27demanded money and merchandise. They say the clerk, the nineteen year old victim
- 3:31here complied, did not show any aggressive action toward the fourteen year old,
- 3:38and as a fourteen year old is walking out, this is the allegation.
- 3:43As a fourteen year old was walking out, he fired multiple shots and killed
- 3:47the nineteen year old and then ran. Police had originally released information last night.
- 3:53Again, this all happened right around eight forty last night. They originally
- 3:58released some information that said that the suspect was in dark clothing, had a
- 4:01mask on in those type of things. So that was the original information that
- 4:06came out. But they rested him at like one thirty this morning. The
- 4:11fourteen year old and not much more Besides that, because he's obviously a juvenile,
- 4:16I would think at some point they would move and then this gets down
- 4:21the road a little bit, but at some point they would move to having
- 4:24tried as an adult. But we'll see, we'll see where that goes.
- 4:27But it's pretty shock. That's pretty shocking in itself. A fourteen year old
- 4:32committing a murder and allegedly robbery and a murder there in North Charleston. Unbelievable.
- 4:43I mean, it's a shocking story anyway when it first broke, you
- 4:46know, late last night about this robbery, and that's the second murder in
- 4:51Charleston, and the other one she's also tragic, but it was it was
- 4:56a domestic I mean type of thing, and so you know, and makes
- 5:01it no less serious. Sure, yes, but the story out of North
- 5:03Charleston, I mean, out of the tobacco shop. I mean, you
- 5:05have a fourteen year old who's charged in the murder and a nineteen year old
- 5:10who apparently and again will all work all this out at some point the police
- 5:14will, but apparently complied, as they tell you in situations like that,
- 5:17please, you know, just comply, give them what they want. And
- 5:21the nineteen year old ends up getting killed. Anyway, it's a tragic story.
- 5:26Again, we've got stories posted about it on the website WCHS Network dot
- 5:29Comedy. You and Chris and the team been working on it real quick.
- 5:31Yesterday we learned that the wife of Senator Mansion, Gail Mansion, was injured
- 5:38in a car accident in Alabama. She's in stable condition. Any update on
- 5:41her condition, well, the update there is a home with Alabama police now
- 5:45report that the guy who hit her and her colleague that was with her in
- 5:50Alabama was actually being chased by police. So there was a pursuit going on,
- 5:56had been going on for several minutes, and they were chasing this suspect.
- 6:00Uh and who would refuse to stop. And so that's that's who was
- 6:04in the wreck. That's who calls the wreck. And they hit gil Mansions
- 6:09vehicle that she was in and the colleague from the Appalachian Regional Commission that was
- 6:14with her. Uh. And again she's in stable condition, but enough to
- 6:16be hospitalized, obviously injured enough to be hospitalized and cap as a precautionary measure,
- 6:23the senator said, But it so we find out a little where it's
- 6:26it's home with Alabama Polace, which is just a suburbist right outside Birmingham.
- 6:30Uh and uh, but yeah it was. It was actually a suspect in
- 6:33a police pursuit. Okay, And again those stories and more posted it at
- 6:39our website' wv metronews dot com and wchsntwork dot com. Jeff, I appreciate
- 6:43it, man, thanks a lot, all right, Dave Allen showing five

- 7:15the Canawg County born of education. I want to bring in now Steve Animal
- 7:18from her sister Station nine eight se of the Mouth and Wild Wonderful classic rock.
- 7:21Steven, good morning, how are you? Robert stone Street is with
- 7:26as well. He's with the Marshall Quarterback Club. Robert, good morning,
- 7:28how are you. Good morning, Dave. I'm well, how are you?
- 7:30I'm fine? Thank you gas for being here. You know, it
- 7:31is Marshall Day at the Capitol. It is. I saw that this morning
- 7:35today and I've got Robert here because this is an annual event that the Marshall
- 7:39Quarterback Club does. This year it's moved over to Embassy Suits. It's the
- 7:44Valentine's Day events and for some reason, for the second consecutive year, you've
- 7:47asked Steve and myself to MC this event. I don't know what you're thinking,
- 7:53as I mean, were you were you not there last year to see
- 7:56what we did last year? But we're honored to do it. I mean,
- 7:59Steve and I both Marshall guys. We are very very happy to MC
- 8:03the event and possibly get the police call. Now I'm kidding to buy there
- 8:07for the drinks and the food. Talk about this big event, Robert,
- 8:11go ahead, sure, thanks. This is our nineteenth annual event coming up
- 8:15on twenty years now. It's hard to believe. We have this event every
- 8:18year the Marshall Quarterback Club at Charleston. We support primarily the Marshall football team,
- 8:22but all athletics as well. They'll be at Embassy Suites on the seventeenth
- 8:28starts at six. Tickets are available through herd Zone. If you go under
- 8:33the Big Green Events tab and we're selling table sponsors, you can be a
- 8:37white table sponsor for two thousand dollars. That get you ten tickets to get
- 8:43in, and your tickets do include dinner, beer, wine and soft drinks
- 8:48all complimentary with that. And then table sponsors also get some drink tickets.
- 8:52If you want a little harder edge to your drinks, you can have tickets
- 8:58called Down Calm Down Cash Bar as well. But we have a have a
- 9:01DJ who's a great DJ, lots of dancing and has some excellent auction items
- 9:07too. There always are, i mean some incredible auction items and that go
- 9:11along with this thing. I mean, can you give us little preview of
- 9:15some of the auction items we have? Sure, so we've got the live
- 9:18auction is usually the biggest hit. One of the items here is a trip
- 9:22to the Ohio State game that's coming up, and it's not only just a
- 9:26trip to the game, but you will fly over on the Marshall Flight School
- 9:30plane O cool, and go to the game and back from there, so
- 9:33it's a day trip. You get to fly on the plane, you get
- 9:37to see the herd play Ohio State. That's probably our marquee five auction item.
- 9:43And then where it is, we're going to have a seventy five helmet
- 9:48that will be up for live auction as well. And there's always all kinds
- 9:52of signed memorabilia and things of that nature. And it's a it's just a
- 9:54great night all around. And again the location in the past different hotel.
- 10:00It's moved over to Embassy Suites this year, so I'm sure those folks will
- 10:03will do a fantastic job with that. And what is the theme this year
- 10:05for the dinner? This year's theme is the Green and White Knight. It
- 10:09is always Valentine's but this year we're encouraging folks to dress and your best green
- 10:15and white. You're that animal. Yeah, maybe your wife has something action
- 10:22wear, you know. Yeah, that's an image I'd like to get out
- 10:26of my head. But but but that's the theme, The Green and White
- 10:28Knight. Obviously that goes without saying, but again they're asking for the best
- 10:31of the best in green and White to come out to support third and proceeds
- 10:33benefits ro Seeds benefit, the Big Green, the Marshall Quarterback Club of Charleston
- 10:39and the Marshall football team. Okay, it's and there's always some coaches that
- 10:43come out for this thing. And again, this is one of those big
- 10:46events in Charleston. You know, we do paint the capital city green up
- 10:48to build No Flight School each August, I guess and Steve and I also
- 10:54have the pleasure of MC and that and this thing is just one of those
- 10:56premier events in Charleston that even people that aren't necessarily the biggest hardcore Herd fans
- 11:01in the world will come out for because it's just a dang good time.
- 11:05Robert, it is an excellent time. You don't have to be a Marshall
- 11:07fan. Will please come out and enjoy yourself. We will have the Marshall
- 11:11coaches. Coach Huff will be there. We expect the new offensive coordinator Seth
- 11:16Dagi to be there as well as the defensive coordinator Jason Seymour and other coaches
- 11:20are invited to yeah, and Marshall alumni are more than welcome to come to
- 11:26this and that's kind of the push on this too, is to get people
- 11:30from this area to participate in all things green and white. And here's a
- 11:33good night to do it. Yeah, and it's not till what's the date
- 11:35again, it's February seventeenth, which is coming up two weeks from Saturday.
- 11:41You can buy individual tickets for one hundred and seventy five dollars, or again,
- 11:43you can be a table sponsor. There's different levels of table sponsor.
- 11:48No, what's the deadline for the table sponsors? Because I know you have
- 11:50to do things like programs and things of that nature. So is there a
- 11:52deadline for this sort of thing. We don't have a hard deadline, but
- 11:56pretty much the week before I'd say the Tuesday Wednesday before or the event would
- 12:01be the deadline for table sponsors. Okay, we'll have you on again to
- 12:03talk about it, to get Steve Animal and I will be serving as EMC's
- 12:07again. It's just going to be a fantastic night as always as we get
- 12:11ready to celebrate Valentine's Day. And so missus Dave Allen and missus Animal,
- 12:18I love the way that's miss missus Animal. They get their night out on
- 12:20the town too with us, they do, which is kind of fabulous.
- 12:24I mean, I think so I'd like to put myself up maybe on the
- 12:28silent auction thing, but I don't know if i'd go. Probably probably not
- 12:31Dave, Steve Animal his wife would be the first one not to be at
- 12:35Otto. Probably. Yet you take it. You got to feed him and
- 12:39get keep him in beer. You do it, all right, Let's kind
- 12:43of recap before before we let you go Robert again daytime. Where can people
- 12:46get tickets that sort of thing? Sure, Saturday February seventeenth. The event
- 12:50starts at six, it runs till midnight. You can get tickets at herd
- 12:52zone dot com under the tab for Big Green Events. And it's all gonna
- 12:56be at Embassy Suites this year. That's right, all right there there,
- 13:01looking forward to it again. We'll have you back on again as we get
- 13:03a little bit closer, because it's a big event kind of close to mine
- 13:05and Steve's hearts as well. And this guy and I are going to do
- 13:07what we do there on that Saturday night. I don't know exactly what that
- 13:11is, but We're going to be a photo booth there again. Yes,
- 13:13there will be. We can have our picture taken. That was a big
- 13:16hit last year. That that again, all proceeds benefit the Big Green Robert,
- 13:20I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to be here, man,
- 13:22Thanks a lot. Thanks Dave. Robert stone Street again from the Martiall Quarterback
- 13:26Club. Adam, It's always a pleasure to have you here as well.
- 13:28Thank you. I'm going to just roll in this chair. He's excited because
- 13:31we have a bigger studio than what he does up there there. But they're
- 13:33actually going to be remodeling this studio. I understand it's going to be a
- 13:37whole lot smaller, so I'll have one. I guess besize it. That
- 13:39was fun. Yeah, all right, he's still You have have the guy
- 13:41that's something shiny or something with wheels, and he's good to go. All

- 16:45White, who'll be replacing Ryan White, who will instead be running for the
- 16:49Western Gin Intermediate Court of Appeals. Several names were submitted to the board and
- 16:53they chose Kate White. Missus White, who is actually away at a conference
- 16:57right now, but it's taking time out of for schedule to be here with
- 17:00us today. Kate, good morning, Welcome to the show. Good morning,
- 17:03Dave, thanks so much for having me. I'm in the big city
- 17:06of Charlotte this morning. So Charlotte, North Carolina. How's the weather down
- 17:10in Charlotte, because it's not too bad right here. It's pretty commy.
- 17:12It's rainy and dropping down. Last night I hit some snow, so it
- 17:15was oh really okay, we haven't had snow here in a couple of weeks.
- 17:18We had a couple of flourries last night, so well that completes the
- 17:21weather report. So Kate congratulations on being named to the school board. Thanks
- 17:27so much, Dave. I really appreciate it, and I really appreciate support
- 17:30from the members of the board and the folks who reached out. I'm really
- 17:33excited to get in to learn and you know, be a good listener and
- 17:37build some consensus and do some good. Give us your background. Tell us
- 17:41about Kate White. Sure. I was fortunate to be born and raised in
- 17:45West Virginia. I'm from Elkins and Randolph County. Went to public schools there.
- 17:49I went to college at Carnagie, Mellon and Pittsburgh and came back.
- 17:52Was a Mere cors Vista for a year, and then went to College of
- 17:56Law at WU. After that Vin Charleston clerk for judges Duke Bloom who retired
- 18:02last year, and then I've primarily worked at Legal Late of West Virginia.
- 18:06I'm an attorney there, but I also am a state wide manager of programs.
- 18:08It's a nonprofit law firm. What do you see as the biggest issue
- 18:14facing Canon County schools as you head in, I know you just got there,
- 18:15you're still learning. You know where the where the restrooms are, in
- 18:18the in the in the board office, and things of that nature. But
- 18:21but but what do you see as the biggest issue facing Knon County schools?
- 18:23Katee, The biggest issue is that continue to client of our student population and
- 18:29really how that impacts the bottom line and the fiscal future that we face.
- 18:33You know, with the clining student population means that the schooid formula, we
- 18:37don't get the funds that you know we do when we have more students,
- 18:40and unfortunately that impacts staffing, that impacts our ability to fix our buildings.
- 18:45You know, we've got sixty some schools across the county and they have a
- 18:49lot of needs in different ages, and so you know, the staffing and
- 18:52the school building that I think are particularly some of the biggest problems are facing.
- 18:56So I guess the big question is why do you do this? I
- 19:00mean, why would you want to be on this good? You know,
- 19:00And I've told the story on the store on the show before. My cousin
- 19:04was a former school board president in another county and he always said to me,
- 19:07telling you cheek, He said, everybody should have to serve on the
- 19:11school board. It's like serving on the jury because it can be a lot
- 19:14of headache, but it can also be very rewarding. So so what is
- 19:18in this for you? Why did you decide you wanted to serve when you
- 19:19when you were giving the appointment, they reached out to you. Sure first
- 19:23and foremost. You know, I'm a parent. I have three kids in
- 19:26Kennall County schools. So I see the impact of our wonderful teachers every day
- 19:30when they come home and how they help my kids meet their needs. They
- 19:34have friends and I see it with them too. You know, I think
- 19:37fundamentally, as a community and quite frankly as a state, we've got to
- 19:41invest in our kids in our future, and one of the most important foundations
- 19:45they can have as an education and having a caring adult in their life,
- 19:48and for a lot of kids that is their teachers. So the opportunity to
- 19:52give back, to contribute, to bring the background that I have, and
- 19:56you know, my desire to just try to help make sure we're meeting kids
- 19:59all their needs where they are is just something that really drove me to want
- 20:03to do that. And you know, we've seen the numbers go down in
- 20:06Kanawa County and we've seen unfortunately, I know, no one likes to lose
- 20:11their schools and their communities because the schools, particularly the elementary schools, are
- 20:14always seemed to be kind of like the hub of the community. But sometimes
- 20:17it is it is required and their schools have to be shuttered. Unfortunately,
- 20:22no one likes to see it happen, but it does happen, and so
- 20:23those are some tough decisions that you may be very well be making in the
- 20:27future unfortunately. You know, those are absolutely things that I think the school
- 20:32board has to look at. They have to have a balanced budget, and
- 20:34so when you only have so much money, you know, you have to
- 20:37consider all those things. You know. Staffing is a real challenge too.
- 20:40We've got a lot of kids that are still recovering from COVID. You're just
- 20:44facing a lot of challenges at home, and so making sure that we have
- 20:47enough teachers to meet their needs, but that our teachers aren't overwhelmed and are
- 20:51getting support they need too. So, yeah, there are real significant challenges,
- 20:55but I do think that there is an ability to make a difference and
- 20:56to make sure that you know, we're supporting our students, for supporting our
- 21:00teachers and doing the best we can, you know, for all Kanauk County
- 21:03residents. Because the education supports everybody in our community. And again we're talking
- 21:07to Kate White, who's the newest member of the Canaw County Board of Education.
- 21:10And we've seen Kate over the and I'm not going to get into this
- 21:11argument, but we've seen over the last couple of years that more and more
- 21:15parents are are choosing alternate methods for educating their kids, be it charter schools
- 21:19or more you know, or remote learning or whatever. There's various different names
- 21:23in various different ways that they do it. What do you do, And
- 21:27I know you're not in the advertising business, but what do you do to
- 21:32tell parents that, hey, public schools are are the place for most kids
- 21:36to be right? I mean, I think that as a school system,
- 21:40we have done a better job and can continue to do a better job of
- 21:42touting our own horn. You know, we've got students that are doing amazing
- 21:47things, going on to amazing careers and amazing colleges, and we just have
- 21:51to keep making sure parents hear those messages. Sure, there are things that
- 21:55can always be better and improved, and I think we always have to work
- 21:57to do that. But yeah, we've got to continue to get the message
- 22:00out there about all the really good things that are happening here, and we
- 22:03also got to make sure we keep our kids here in West Virginia. We
- 22:06want them to stay. We want them to be educated in college and career
- 22:08ready, but we also want them to stay here and see the good that
- 22:11they can do in their community and contribute back to West Virginia and before we
- 22:14let it go. You know, I spend a lot of time on this
- 22:17show being the old guy in the room talking about right when I was in
- 22:18school and whatever, but it has changed. My generation was told everybody has
- 22:22to go to college. Everybody had and they spent time in high school telling
- 22:27us about what colleges we need to go to and now and I am very
- 22:32thankful for this. Kate, there seems to be more of an emphasis on
- 22:33yea, if you want to go to WVU Marshall State, you see whatever,
- 22:37that's fine. But if you also want to go into one of the
- 22:40one of the trade schools, you want to learn an occupation outside of a
- 22:42traditional four year institution, the public school system makes that pretty easy as far
- 22:48as transitioning into those one hundred percent. And that's so important because you need
- 22:52to give all students, you know, like you said, college isn't for
- 22:56everybody, quite frankly, and on a student that you know that kids have
- 22:59to take to do that is just really cost prohibitive. So making sure that
- 23:03we're supporting and working with our college community colleges and making sure that the trades
- 23:07are supported and quite frankly, can make a lot more money is really important.
- 23:11And we need those folks in our community to help take care of things,
- 23:15you know, in our homes and our businesses and in our state.
- 23:18Well, Kate, I know you're busy, as you said, you're at
- 23:19a call us up from a conference today. We'll let you get back to
- 23:22it. Kate White, the newest member of the Canau County Board of Education.

- 25:26I will say this, he is a he is a very controversial figure.
- 25:32Yes, that is true. But since it was announced by the folks locally

- 30:33investigating the murder at the Tobacco and Pipe shop took place in Seventh Avenue in
- 30:37Charleston. Now it has been revealed this happened sometime during the eight o'clock hour
- 30:41last night, and there was apparently an attempt at robbery and a nineteen year
- 30:48old clerk was killed in the in the robbery. And now within the last
- 30:53hour, a fourteen year old has been arrested in that murder. Tragic story
- 31:00all around. I mean, you know, murder is always tragic, but
- 31:03especially when the nineteen year old clerk doing their job lost their life and a
- 31:08fourteen year old has been charged in the murder. Details available WHS Network dot

- 31:37Nicole Grady, who's live at the Capital as we speak. Senator, Good
- 31:40morning, welcome to the show. Good morning day, Thank you today.
- 31:42I am doing fine. Thank you for being here. I told the listeners,
- 31:45you know, uh, this must be your lucky day because you get
- 31:48to talk to me now and Hoppy coming up and talk loud. Some feeks,
- 31:52some folks would absolutely give anything to be interviewed by both of us in
- 31:56one morning. And you get it. You get it, You're the lucky
- 31:59one. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know how to contain my
- 32:01excitement. So it is very definitely the best part of my day I can
- 32:06Yeah, she said, tongue in cheek. You know, it's not nice
- 32:08to lie as a politician or a teacher. Just so you know, just
- 32:14so you know, I want to say this about speaking of teaching, and
- 32:17I had actually had Kate White on, who's the newest member of the Canaw
- 32:20County Board of Education. She was on the segment just before you, Senator
- 32:23Grady. The listeners know that before you were a legislator and you continue to
- 32:27be a teacher. What are some of the legislative initiatives for teachers and the
- 32:31school system that you and others under the DELBO been working on. So far,
- 32:37we have been working on a lot of Thanks Dave. You know,
- 32:38we actually worked with the department this fall to put out an email with like
- 32:45a legislative survey about issues that teachers feel like that need to be addressed.
- 32:50We had respondents from I think where there were about twenty two hundred respondents and
- 32:55that represented fifty five different counties anywhere from a beginning teacher to teachers forty plus
- 33:00years. And it was a very quick one. So I'm hoping the next
- 33:02one we do will have you up in more responses. But the things that
- 33:06they sent us back were things we wanted to focus on, behaviors, student
- 33:09absences, their workload. You know, they talked a lot about we have
- 33:15too many trainings and we feel like that they're repetitive. So those things are
- 33:19things that we have addressed and I have addressed in bills that I've introduced personally,
- 33:23because you know, it's important to listen. I'm also in the profession,
- 33:27so I agree with all of those things. But they also mentioned,
- 33:30you know, a lot of things that we can't change legislatively, like student
- 33:34apathy was one. How you can't legislate it. You can give as student
- 33:37as much as you need to in front of them, but you can't force
- 33:39them to learn it. You know. They also mentioned that print parent involvement
- 33:45is very low, and so you know, that's another thing we can't legislate
- 33:49printal responsibility. We have to that has to be something that somebody wants to
- 33:52do. So we're trying to address the issues that they gave us. And
- 33:57discipline and behavior was the major one you've heard. We've talked about it before
- 34:00and then you've heard me talk about it on Hobby as well. That that's
- 34:04something that needs to be dealt with. And again, I know you and
- 34:06Hopy are going to get into the results of that survey a little bit to
- 34:08further during your segment with him a little bit later on, but I want
- 34:12to I want to ask you as a teacher, and you brought up a
- 34:15very interesting point there, and again we're talking with Senator Amy Nicole Grady,
- 34:16who, in additionally being a legislator, is also a teacher. So I
- 34:21know you can't legislate parental involvement, but as a teacher, and I don't
- 34:24want to give away trade secrets here, but have you ever had the opportunity
- 34:29or you ever had an instance, Senator where you've had to had to pull
- 34:34a parent or a grandparent aside and just say, look, we're doing all
- 34:37we can here, but we really need you and the family more involved than
- 34:42home. I know it's a very touchy subject and you don't want to get
- 34:45into rate telling people how to raise their kids, but if you ever had
- 34:46to have that conversation with someone, Absolutely every year that I've taught, I
- 34:51have, you know, and a lot of times David's I want to say,
- 34:54for the most most of the time, it's that they don't realize the
- 34:59importance of being involved at home, and they don't or they're overwhelmed with other
- 35:01responsibilities. I mean, right now, we have parents and grandparents are who
- 35:06are busy working a job in the evenings, or working two jobs, or
- 35:09kids are also involved in a lot of things. You know, it's sports
- 35:13in the evenings, and they don't feel like they have the time they need
- 35:15for schoolwork, so they feel like it's a separation. You know, you
- 35:19do school work at school and then at home we have all these other responsibilities.
- 35:23So I've had that conversation almost every year with a parent or more about
- 35:29the importance and how they can help in our small school. I'm really encouraged
- 35:32though, because we often have parents that reach out and say what can I
- 35:37do to help? And that's always encouraging. You know, we're a very
- 35:40small school, very tight knit community, though, and I think that makes
- 35:44a big difference. And you mentioned that kids have so many responsibilities today and
- 35:49so many other activities. I've been told by a lot of educators. You
- 35:51can agree or disagree with this, Senator Grady, that there are students that
- 35:55it's either a feast or famine. You have a kid that is involved in
- 36:00way too much from sports to other activities, or they're involved in absolutely nothing,
- 36:05and when they go home, they get that constant reinforcement from you and
- 36:09the educators or maybe their classmates whatever, and then they go home to horrendous
- 36:14situations that you and I can't even imagine. In many cases, and they
- 36:16go home to nothing. Do you find that to be the case? It
- 36:19could be one or the other. Oh, absolutely, And I'll tell you
- 36:22in fourth grade, my first first year or two of teaching fourth grade,
- 36:25I would send homework occasionally and the kids would come back and it wouldn't be
- 36:29completed. And these were kids were you know, I knew their parents loved
- 36:30them, and I knew they cared, but they had other other things that
- 36:35were on their mind. So you know, it was a wasted bit of
- 36:37time. And I started learning my students and a lot of my students live
- 36:40in poverty, and realized that they're not worried about getting their homework finished,
- 36:45you know, those other things they're worried about. They're worried about if they're
- 36:47going to when they're gonna eat, if they're going to eat, where they're
- 36:50going to sleep. Maybe they don't have their own bedroo own bedroom, and
- 36:52they sleep on the couch and the parents have friends over until eleven or twelve
- 36:57o'clock at night and they're trying to sleep on the couch. You know,
- 36:59those are situations that we don't really think about. With these kids, you
- 37:02know, they're not thinking about us. Even when they're at school and they're
- 37:06supposed to be learning, they're not thinking about learning, or they're not thinking
- 37:09about how they're going to do on a test. They're thinking, Okay,
- 37:12when's lunch. I'm starving. I haven't eaten since yesterday at lunch. Who's
- 37:15picking me up from school today? You know, I don't know who it's
- 37:16going to be. Where am I going to sleep tonight? Where am I
- 37:19going? Where am I staying for the evening? You know, all these
- 37:21things are on their minds. And the kids who are involved in a lot
- 37:24of sports have parents who I feel like push them, you know, But
- 37:29the others and the other k in the other cases, they don't. They
- 37:32really at school is where they get everything they need. Again, talking to
- 37:37Senator Amy, Nicole Grady and we and we talk a little bit about two
- 37:40about homelessness with our with our students, and homelessness is not necessarily what you
- 37:46think of when it comes to our kids. It's not necessarily someone who's living
- 37:51on the treets. Admits to somebody that doesn't have a permanent home to call
- 37:53their home. Yes, and we have when we take a survey of our
- 37:58homeless students. If they are living somewhere other than with their legal parent or
- 38:02guardian, they're considered homeless. And we have a lot of families that live
- 38:07like the mom, the dad, and the kids all live with somebody else
- 38:10in their family, you know, like two family households, and those that
- 38:15family would be considered homeless. And so you know, not having a space
- 38:17of your own also has its negative effects on our students and their learning.
- 38:22Exactly before we let you go, and I know you've got to get back
- 38:24to it again. You're going to be making an appearance on Hoppy coming up
- 38:29a little bit later on. I want to talk to you about your future,
- 38:32about what you are going to do. This is a re election year
- 38:36for you if you choose to run. Are you running for reelection? Oh?
- 38:38Absolutely. I love this job. I feel like I'm helping people.
- 38:43I feel like that that's my focus. My focus has always been how can
- 38:46I help and how can I push West Virginia forward? And you know,
- 38:51Dave, I always say when people always ask me about that, I always
- 38:52say, you know, sometimes the best part is when I help somebody behind
- 38:57the scenes that might seem like something little to me, but it's something and
- 39:00huge to them and they maybe nobody else knows it, but they know it
- 39:02and I know it. It's just such a good serving feeling. You know
- 39:07that you're serving the people and you're helping somebody, and that's that's something I
- 39:10want to continue to do. So, yes, I am definitely in the
- 39:13race, and I'm in at twinette, give me like thirty seconds or so.
- 39:19I'm not going to time you before we let you go. Some of
- 39:21the things during your tenure that you have done, not just based on education,
- 39:25but other things that you done that you're particularly proud of. Well,
- 39:29that's one that I just mentioned. The little things that I do to help,
- 39:30you know, And I try to make sure my door is always open.
- 39:34I stay in contact with with the people in my district. I'm always
- 39:37open to even somebody has different ideas. I get complimented all the time on
- 39:40that they feel like they can come and share their ideas or thoughts with me,
- 39:45even if we might not agree. That at least I'm going to have
- 39:46respectful conversation. And I think that's important. I think that we have to
- 39:51listen to each other, even if we have opposing opposing arguments on things because
- 39:54I might open their eyes or they may open my eyes as something I never
- 39:58saw, you know. So I feel like looking at it from different perspectives
- 40:00is something I'm really strong at and I pride myself one just trying to do
- 40:05the right thing, and I always do. I know, you can't focus
- 40:07on making somebody mad, because somebody's always going to be mad at you in
- 40:12this position. But I just try to make sure I do the right thing.
- 40:15And when I feel like I do the right thing, I can lay
- 40:16my head down at night's sleep and that's you know, that's where I want
- 40:20to be. So that's that's kind of one I want everybody to know about
- 40:22me, is that that's where my focus is. Well. The best of
- 40:25luck not only under the dome for the rest of the session, but also
- 40:30in your bid for reelection, Senator Amy Nicole Grady appreciate it as always,
- 40:32you be in here. Thanks a lot, Thanks Dave. We'll talk to
- 40:35you soon, all right again, She'll be on with Hopy coming up a
- 40:37little bit later on. They're going to get into the particulars on this survey.
- 40:42And I know Hoppy's talked about it a little bit, but some of
- 40:44the Some of the things that I read in the coverage of this, of
- 40:49the survey that was done, were astounding. I'm going to get into one

- 46:52going to go back to this teacher survey that Senator Grady alluded to, and
- 47:02as I said, she and Hoppy are going to get into this a whole
- 47:05lot further on talk line. I think one thing that really stuck out to
- 47:13me when I read this and in talking to Senator Grady this morning, was
- 47:19the number of teachers that say only about five percent of the parents or guardians
- 47:28of their students were actively involved in the process of education. Now, let's
- 47:34think about that for a moment. And again I always have to say,
- 47:37not a parent, child free by choice. But I'm not a parent.
- 47:42But you put a kid on a school okay, who my kid? And
- 47:45kids don't ride school buses anymore. That's another pet peeve of mine. That's
- 47:49another story for another time. So you send your kid off to school,
- 47:53and a lot of parents, not all, but a lot of parents insist
- 47:57on the school system and all the work. And it's been proven from study
- 48:04after study after study that the work that kids do at home related to school
- 48:09work is just as important as being in the classroom itself. Now I'm not
- 48:13necessarily talking about homework per se, but having a parent that sits down with
- 48:17a kid and says, what did you learn today? What did you do
- 48:24in school today? How are your relationships with your teachers, how are your
- 48:29relationships with your classmates? That sort of thing. I had a former neighbor
- 48:36of my wife and I that was a public school teacher, And this is
- 48:40going back several years ago, and I learned a lot about the school system,
- 48:45even though I don't have kids. By having Tracy as our next door
- 48:50neighbor, and she would tell me she was a high school teacher, and
- 48:55she would tell me that at parent teacher conferences, many of them were quite
- 49:00simply a waste of time. Because in parental involvement is important. Don't get
- 49:06me wrong, the parents who needed to come out there were the ones that
- 49:13didn't show up. And the ones that did come to the parent teacher conference
- 49:16that did take an active role in knowing what their kids were learning in school,
- 49:22those tended to be the ones whose kids were doing okay. And again,
- 49:27yeah, I'm not trying to downplay that. I mean, you should
- 49:30always be involved in your kids' education. But you show up at a parent
- 49:34teacher conference and you look as a as a parent, and you look at
- 49:37the teacher. Teacher says, yeah, Johnny's doing fine. He's he's got
- 49:40an a, does everything we ask, does all his homework, does everything.
- 49:44Whereas the other kids, you know, the parents and grandparents many cases
- 49:47simply just simply don't care. And I'm going to go out on a limb
- 49:53here and bear with me. I guess it's one of another one of those
- 49:58day vittorials. Right, We got to get some music for the Davitorials,
- 50:00I think I would say, and I base this nothing more than just on
- 50:06speculation, having been on this yere earth for you know, fifty three years,
- 50:12that about ninety five percent, if not more, of the problems that
- 50:21we face in this country simply go back to one thing. And it's not
- 50:27drugs. Well, you know, drugs factor into it, but I'm talking
- 50:31about the much much larger picture here. It's people having kids that have no
- 50:39business having kids, kids that they don't want or at this point in their
- 50:49lives they cannot afford, whether it's financially, whether it's mentally or otherwise.
- 51:00It's kids having kids at a young age or does not don't necessarily even be
- 51:06at a young age. It's kids having kids or adults having kids, I
- 51:09should say that simply are not in a position to raise said kids in their
- 51:15life. You know, employment insecurities, legal issues, so on and so
- 51:21forth, and of course drugs and mental health issues play a large, large
- 51:25part of that. And then they send the kids off the school and somehow
- 51:30our teachers, and make no mistake about it, there are some bad teachers
- 51:32out there. There are some awesome, wonderful, great teachers out there.
- 51:36As well. They're expected now to be everything to these kids. They're expected
- 51:42to teach them math, smelling, history, computers, but they're also expected
- 51:45to be their counselor. They're also expected to teach them about hygiene. They're
- 51:51expected to teach them all of these things because mommy, daddy, grandma,
- 51:53and grandparents simply aren't involved. And our government, our government doesn't make it
- 52:00any easier because in some instances they reward this behavior by handing out checks to
- 52:10people that have kids. You know, I don't know how you fix it.
- 52:15All I do is complain about it. I don't know how you fix
- 52:17it. But it's majorly, majorly a big problem. It is, and
- 52:21my heart goes out to educators for having to try to deal with it on
- 52:23a daily basis. All Right, we gotta go Dave Island Show and five
