- 0:08Speaker 1: More from Marlin's camp.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Let's talk to Xavier Edwards right now, Second Basement for Miami.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Xavier, great to have you on the show. We appreciate
- 0:15Speaker 1: the time.
- 0:15Speaker 2: How's camp going for you and how are some of
- 0:17Speaker 2: the new faces looking there?
- 0:20Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 0:20Speaker 4: It Kemp's going great, you know, excited to be here.
- 0:22Speaker 5: I think all of us are kind of, you know,
- 0:24Speaker 5: right at the midway point, we're kind of ready to
- 0:25Speaker 5: get going with the season, kind of get on our way.
- 0:27Speaker 5: But yeah, it's been good so far, and a lot
- 0:30Speaker 5: of new guys look really good.
- 0:31Speaker 4: It's some of the new staff that we got. We're
- 0:32Speaker 4: get to know them and they've been really good this far,
- 0:34Speaker 4: so they're really excited.
- 0:35Speaker 6: Do they come to you for answers? You're kind of
- 0:37Speaker 6: like one of the veterans on this team now today?
- 0:39Speaker 6: Does the new people come to you and say, Zaber
- 0:41Speaker 6: what you got on Miami for us?
- 0:43Speaker 7: Uh?
- 0:44Speaker 4: Now?
- 0:44Speaker 5: I mean I think that's kind of a advantage I
- 0:48Speaker 5: guess that I have that all of us are so
- 0:49Speaker 5: young that you know, sure, I'm I've been in the
- 0:52Speaker 5: league a little bit longer than them, but I haven't
- 0:53Speaker 5: been league that long. You know, I'm not in arbitration
- 0:55Speaker 5: yet you know, either Stours, So I think we're all
- 0:58Speaker 5: kind of in the same with the same boat or
- 1:00Speaker 5: litle bolt. You know, we're young guys just trying to,
- 1:02Speaker 5: you know, make a name for ourselves, and I hope
- 1:03Speaker 5: our team win. So I think it's kind of an
- 1:05Speaker 5: advanced where as we don't have any uh you know,
- 1:07Speaker 5: quote unquote salty vets or anything like that. So we
- 1:10Speaker 5: kind of just be ourselves and you know, feed off
- 1:12Speaker 5: each other and learn from each other.
- 1:13Speaker 6: So it's good group the salty vets to make the
- 1:15Speaker 6: world go around. Okay, just remember that.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Yeah, some clubhouses they might, but in Ours, I don't know.
- 1:19Speaker 3: If I do.
- 1:20Speaker 6: Before we get too deep into the marlins, I have
- 1:22Speaker 6: a question for You're born in New York Long Island.
- 1:24Speaker 6: You guys know that's right, right, But you moved to Florida.
- 1:27Speaker 6: When did you move to Florida?
- 1:28Speaker 4: When I was five?
- 1:29Speaker 7: So which one do you claim?
- 1:30Speaker 4: Florida? Yeah, Florida, Florida.
- 1:32Speaker 6: I was born on Long Island. I moved here when
- 1:34Speaker 6: I was too but I use Long Island when I
- 1:36Speaker 6: need it. Yeah, this is one of those.
- 1:37Speaker 5: Grand New York you need it, But that's right. Other
- 1:39Speaker 5: than that, it's like a Florida boy through and through.
- 1:41Speaker 6: So you're you're born from You're from North Broward, which
- 1:44Speaker 6: is close to Miami.
- 1:46Speaker 4: It's in between. So like I'm from Palm Beach County.
- 1:48Speaker 5: I'm from Wellington, like thirty five minutes from here, and
- 1:50Speaker 5: then now I live in boy and Beach. But yeah,
- 1:53Speaker 5: my wife's from actually Miami, born and raised Miami, so
- 1:56Speaker 5: kind of spent a lot of time between Miami and
- 1:58Speaker 5: Palm Beach.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Kind of my parents are in Palm Beach, so kid, yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 4: something like that.
- 2:01Speaker 5: You know, I've got a little bit a little bit
- 2:03Speaker 5: of both, you know, an hour away but not too far,
- 2:05Speaker 5: so as close as you can get without being from
- 2:06Speaker 5: Miami for sure.
- 2:08Speaker 8: Hex Can you be a leader because when we played together,
- 2:12Speaker 8: you were like twelve years old and you were quiet,
- 2:16Speaker 8: and how much have you had to not adapt? But
- 2:20Speaker 8: like how much have you had to change based on
- 2:24Speaker 8: your success in the big leagues and then like ooh,
- 2:27Speaker 8: other guys coming to you and being like, hey, I
- 2:30Speaker 8: need to know how this goes or I need to
- 2:32Speaker 8: know how that goes, because now that you're in the
- 2:34Speaker 8: ripe old age of twenty five.
- 2:38Speaker 5: I mean it's not really I don't I think I
- 2:40Speaker 5: can be a leader without you know, standing in front
- 2:42Speaker 5: of the whole clubhouse and speaking. You know, that's not
- 2:44Speaker 5: really my thing, but really just kind of lead by example,
- 2:47Speaker 5: you know, try to be you know, at the right
- 2:48Speaker 5: place at the right time, do the right things, kind
- 2:50Speaker 5: of show the younger guys just you know, where to
- 2:53Speaker 5: be what to do. But besides that, you know, I'm
- 2:57Speaker 5: I'm just like them. You know, I'm not gonna you know,
- 2:59Speaker 5: go trip them or you know, try to play my
- 3:01Speaker 5: seniority over them. I think, you know, we're teammates. We need,
- 3:04Speaker 5: you know, everyone on our forty men, even some guys
- 3:05Speaker 5: that aren't on it, you know, win you know, meaningful
- 3:08Speaker 5: games at the end of the year, and you know
- 3:10Speaker 5: it starts with everybody. So making everyone feel comfortable, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 5: we know want anyone to feel like they can't come
- 3:13Speaker 5: up to you know, myself or anybody else on our team.
- 3:16Speaker 5: You know that we want to be you know, as
- 3:17Speaker 5: open of a book as we can be. And you know,
- 3:20Speaker 5: I like to be approachable, you know. I know it
- 3:21Speaker 5: was like to get an older clubouts as a younger
- 3:23Speaker 5: player and not feel comfortable asking people things or not,
- 3:26Speaker 5: you know, not knowing where to be. So you know,
- 3:27Speaker 5: I never want people to feel like that around me.
- 3:30Speaker 5: And you know, my parents raise me that way to
- 3:31Speaker 5: kind of treat people the way you want to be treated.
- 3:33Speaker 5: So that's what I'm trying to do. When you played
- 3:36Speaker 5: with them, so I played with them one USA, So
- 3:37Speaker 5: I don't think, Yeah, I don't think anyone's really you know,
- 3:40Speaker 5: crust the USA, right, we were there for like, I
- 3:42Speaker 5: mean it was kind of one. It was like almost
- 3:44Speaker 5: like four weeks. Yeah, you know, he's happy to be there.
- 3:46Speaker 5: I think it was on the tail end of his career.
- 3:47Speaker 5: A great teammate, great leader. He is someone who's vocal.
- 3:50Speaker 5: So he could get in front of the clubhouse and
- 3:51Speaker 5: give us a good.
- 3:52Speaker 7: Speech or give me, give me your best speech.
- 3:54Speaker 4: Tell us young guys, you want me to give it?
- 3:56Speaker 3: You want to give it? Gave me?
- 3:58Speaker 7: What did he say to you guys? Should he get
- 3:59Speaker 7: up there and give like the miracle speech? No, he's
- 4:03Speaker 7: our moments.
- 4:04Speaker 5: He's a professional. You know what you need to do.
- 4:06Speaker 5: You get yourself fad for the game, you know, take
- 4:08Speaker 5: pride and we're in USA. Cross your chest, you know
- 4:09Speaker 5: some of the of the sorts.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Okay, just checking I did I did cry, right, X.
- 4:15Speaker 8: I cried when I when I talked at the end
- 4:18Speaker 8: after we got after we got beat by Mexico.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you did cry. That was a meaningful moment
- 4:24Speaker 5: for you on the back end of your career. But yeah,
- 4:26Speaker 5: it was great to be a teammate with him.
- 4:28Speaker 8: That was the apex of my career. X. That was
- 4:30Speaker 8: the apex. Like my career was just going all the
- 4:34Speaker 8: way till that point and then I just quit and
- 4:36Speaker 8: then it went out nice.
- 4:40Speaker 4: All right, X.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Let's get back to the team for a moment here.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Uh So, heading into this season, can you give us
- 4:46Speaker 2: a name or two that you think is going to
- 4:48Speaker 2: take the next step, one of your teammates that you
- 4:50Speaker 2: saw maybe start to really show things at the end
- 4:52Speaker 2: of last year, or even somebody that in camp has
- 4:55Speaker 2: been very impressive that hasn't even cracked the bigs yet.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Think Liam Hicks has looked really really good behind the dish. No,
- 5:04Speaker 5: usually the first two weeks he's got Oh no, he's
- 5:06Speaker 5: got now. But yeah, when I saw him playing a
- 5:08Speaker 5: few days ago, he looked really really good, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 5: throwing the ball well, playing good defense in the ball
- 5:14Speaker 5: really well. So off the really good start the spring
- 5:17Speaker 5: only two man, I'll go, I'll go Graham Polly. I
- 5:21Speaker 5: know he hasn't been throwing that much, but I think
- 5:23Speaker 5: he looks really good as well. I mean also Norby.
- 5:25Speaker 5: You know, I guess they're kind of bowing out a
- 5:27Speaker 5: third base. But I think they're both gonna be a
- 5:28Speaker 5: big part of our team, and they both look really
- 5:30Speaker 5: good to spring. You know, working on different things, but
- 5:33Speaker 5: definitely both gonna be a big parts work team.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Okay, I've got a little trivia question for our guys.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Uh Kratz and AJ Xavier led the league against a
- 5:45Speaker 2: certain pitch this year or last year? I should say,
- 5:49Speaker 2: do you guys know what pitch it is? And X
- 5:50Speaker 2: do you know what pitch it is? If you do
- 5:52Speaker 2: hold back on it for a moment.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I got a guess.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Okay, crats be like a knuckleball or something like like
- 6:00Speaker 6: a fastball either.
- 6:04Speaker 1: X, do you know what it is?
- 6:06Speaker 4: My guess is a cutter.
- 6:08Speaker 2: No, I have you down as eleven for twenty six
- 6:11Speaker 2: last year against sweepers. That's for twenty three best in
- 6:14Speaker 2: baseball minimum of whatever thirty plate appearances. Do you remember
- 6:19Speaker 2: hitting sweepers good last year? I mean, I guess not
- 6:21Speaker 2: as much as cutters.
- 6:22Speaker 5: Maybe I couldn't remember hitting a single sweeper, you know,
- 6:26Speaker 5: so hard, right handed, so hard. Sweepers, sliders, curveballs, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 5: they're all this more or less the same thing. Some
- 6:34Speaker 5: guys actually sweep some of them back up. Who knows
- 6:37Speaker 5: what a sweeper is anymore? For that sweeper slide, backup slider.
- 6:43Speaker 1: We haven't talked about that in a while.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Actually, right where AJ was on his front saying, we're
- 6:48Speaker 2: not going to give this pitch a new name, but
- 6:50Speaker 2: it kind of went out. The pitch name won out.
- 6:52Speaker 2: So what what would be your key to hitting off speed?
- 6:54Speaker 2: You know, how do you get yourself hitting off speed
- 6:57Speaker 2: the way that you do? And really being one of
- 6:59Speaker 2: the few guys in the league X that still has
- 7:02Speaker 2: a batting average at a spot where twenty years ago
- 7:05Speaker 2: we'd be like, oh, this guy, this guy can hit. Nowadays,
- 7:07Speaker 2: you know, the league average has plummeted, and yet you're
- 7:10Speaker 2: one of those guys who, you.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Know, I think has a chance to hit three hundred
- 7:13Speaker 1: plus this year.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, you're not probaly myself on on average, and
- 7:17Speaker 5: that's that's really important to me. Just kind of hitter
- 7:19Speaker 5: I've been my whole life. You know, my dad kind
- 7:21Speaker 5: of agree that in me at an early age. You know,
- 7:23Speaker 5: getting on base obviously on base percentage, but you know,
- 7:25Speaker 5: having a high batting average.
- 7:27Speaker 3: He goes with that.
- 7:27Speaker 4: If you can walk a bit, so that's been important
- 7:31Speaker 4: for me.
- 7:31Speaker 5: And then hitting on the off speed front, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 5: keeping your way back, you know, try not to lunch,
- 7:36Speaker 5: you know, doing your best to stay to the big
- 7:38Speaker 5: part of the field.
- 7:38Speaker 4: I would say, is how you.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Stay on more pitches than not, you know, not selling
- 7:43Speaker 5: out to one in particular.
- 7:44Speaker 4: You know, if you, in theory hit a.
- 7:46Speaker 5: Fast ball the other way, you should be able to
- 7:47Speaker 5: stay on an off street pitch a little bit better.
- 7:49Speaker 5: So you know, there's some give and take the hitting,
- 7:51Speaker 5: you know, the nuance of it. But let's see, for
- 7:53Speaker 5: have you.
- 7:53Speaker 7: A little fast guy, dude, Yes, for you don't have to.
- 7:57Speaker 6: You can get those field I can come back, hit
- 8:00Speaker 6: the six hopper in the hold of the short sometimes.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah. The shortstops got good arms.
- 8:03Speaker 7: Now they have good arms back in the day, Yeah
- 8:06Speaker 7: it did.
- 8:07Speaker 5: I don't know, I don't know if they're as big,
- 8:08Speaker 5: but they had some good arms. Shifting now yeah, different
- 8:14Speaker 5: game a little bit, Yeah, not that different. It's not
- 8:17Speaker 5: that different, but it's a little.
- 8:18Speaker 7: Different because like you can stay back and.
- 8:22Speaker 4: I can shoot him and through the six sols.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Sometimes sometimes it's goodliner at the middle if they're not
- 8:27Speaker 5: standing there, they're kind of standing there last time. Now
- 8:29Speaker 5: you should be hit all the time when you're younger, right,
- 8:31Speaker 5: not anymore? Got the guy starting behind second base?
- 8:34Speaker 8: The last one from me. You mentioned you're not arbitration Olsen,
- 8:38Speaker 8: yet everybody as a player knows you start making money
- 8:40Speaker 8: and arbitration, free agency, all that stuff.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You don't.
- 8:44Speaker 8: You lack what the game calls.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Oh, just he.
- 8:47Speaker 8: Doesn't have a ton of power. I've seen you hit
- 8:49Speaker 8: some dingers. I've seen you hit the ball in the
- 8:51Speaker 8: gaps and run. You see Luis or Eyes go through
- 8:55Speaker 8: his free agency a guy who is a batting title champion.
- 8:59Speaker 8: To me, I think you have chance to be a
- 9:00Speaker 8: batting title champion. Like to me, do you look at
- 9:04Speaker 8: that and go day like the game doesn't really like
- 9:06Speaker 8: my style or you're like it's okay, I'm just gonna
- 9:09Speaker 8: go out and be me. Or do you try to
- 9:11Speaker 8: maybe incorporate something that would enable you to have more
- 9:15Speaker 8: power so you don't get into a spot like Luis
- 9:18Speaker 8: Rais had this offseason.
- 9:21Speaker 5: Uh, it's a great question. I think me and Loui
- 9:24Speaker 5: are just so different players. I love Lee, I love
- 9:28Speaker 5: playing with them. I mean his back to ball skills
- 9:30Speaker 5: speak for themselves. On his ability to put the ball
- 9:33Speaker 5: where the defenders not also speak for itself. But I
- 9:36Speaker 5: think we're different hitters. We're different players, you know, different defenders.
- 9:39Speaker 5: So I think I'd like to think that plays into
- 9:41Speaker 5: the equation to some extent. You know, your overall war
- 9:44Speaker 5: and you know what position you're going to play and
- 9:46Speaker 5: that kind of thing. You're versatility and I switch hit.
- 9:48Speaker 5: He just hits lefties, So I'd like to think that
- 9:50Speaker 5: plays into the fact. So not really compare our games
- 9:53Speaker 5: to each other or kind of what his freuency situation
- 9:56Speaker 5: was like to what mine will potentially be like. But no,
- 9:59Speaker 5: I I think that there's a blend. You know, there's
- 10:02Speaker 5: a mix of you know, taking your shot two oh's
- 10:04Speaker 5: and three ones, you know, when your leverage counts, and
- 10:07Speaker 5: and then also knowing with two strikes that what kind
- 10:10Speaker 5: of hitter I've been in my career and what the
- 10:11Speaker 5: hitter I want to continue to be, you know, shorten
- 10:14Speaker 5: up use a two strike approach, you know, put the
- 10:15Speaker 5: ball in play, because that's better than a strikeout. You know,
- 10:18Speaker 5: baseball hasn't changed that much, regardless of the computers and
- 10:22Speaker 5: the technology behind the game.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Like, putting the ball in play is.
- 10:26Speaker 5: Maybe not always, but a lot of the time is
- 10:28Speaker 5: going to be better than not putting the ball in play.
- 10:30Speaker 5: And it gives our team a chance. It gives me
- 10:32Speaker 5: a chance to get on base and do something for
- 10:33Speaker 5: the team, versus walking back to du Gut gives me
- 10:35Speaker 5: no chance.
- 10:37Speaker 4: So I understand that.
- 10:38Speaker 5: But I understand also where the game is and what
- 10:40Speaker 5: is valued, and I think there's room for both so
- 10:43Speaker 5: to take my chances, but also not forget who I
- 10:45Speaker 5: am as a hitter.
- 10:46Speaker 6: By the way, so what you just said is awesome
- 10:48Speaker 6: about everything. You understand all that, But how do you
- 10:50Speaker 6: explain that to teams though, Because what's valued is is
- 10:53Speaker 6: strike it out. Its power, right, But your your strengths
- 10:56Speaker 6: are speed on base and play right, taking the extra base,
- 11:00Speaker 6: putting pressure on the team. How do you how do
- 11:02Speaker 6: you explain to a team that that's that's good? Because
- 11:04Speaker 6: I think it's great. I remember, as a catcher, I'd
- 11:07Speaker 6: much rather face a dude he might hit forty and
- 11:09Speaker 6: strike out two hundred times. And a guy like you
- 11:11Speaker 6: that we used to call you fleas, Like if you're
- 11:12Speaker 6: a flee, I hate those little fleas.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Right long at bats get.
- 11:16Speaker 6: Off first, I'm like, he's gonna steal now, I can't
- 11:19Speaker 6: throw it away. My pitcher's gonna get in his head.
- 11:22Speaker 6: He's gonna try to speed up. Then the next guy's
- 11:24Speaker 6: gonna hang a slider too, because he's trying to be quick.
- 11:27Speaker 7: Like, there's so much value in what you do, but
- 11:29Speaker 7: how do how do you get teams to understand that?
- 11:33Speaker 5: The short answer is war, Really the short answers war.
- 11:37Speaker 5: You know, that's kind of the end all be all
- 11:39Speaker 5: right now in baseball, And luckily, there's a lot of
- 11:42Speaker 5: ways to increase your war, you know, taking the extra
- 11:44Speaker 5: base you get war points for that, you know, making
- 11:46Speaker 5: defensive plays and getting on base, scoring runs, all things
- 11:49Speaker 5: that help win games. Now it's quantified, you know, like
- 11:52Speaker 5: it wasn't before, but now it is. So that's a
- 11:54Speaker 5: short answer, long answer. I think if you just watch
- 11:59Speaker 5: winning plays winning baseball, Like, yes, every team has guys
- 12:03Speaker 5: who can hit the ball of the ballpark, but they
- 12:05Speaker 5: all they don't have nine guys in the lineup that
- 12:08Speaker 5: can just all slug slug slug, and there's no move
- 12:11Speaker 5: the runner over, there's no small wall, there's no taking
- 12:13Speaker 5: extra base, no ringing the bases right way. I think the
- 12:16Speaker 5: best teams have a blend of that, and I think
- 12:19Speaker 5: it's important. Like, you know, the Blue Jays were you know,
- 12:21Speaker 5: an inch or a couple of inches away from winning
- 12:22Speaker 5: a World Series, and I feel like they had a
- 12:24Speaker 5: lot of that. They were different than the Dodgers, but
- 12:28Speaker 5: they had power, you know, power of Valadi and and
- 12:30Speaker 5: some of the other bats that they have. But they
- 12:31Speaker 5: also guys have put the ball in play and put
- 12:33Speaker 5: pressure on the defense. You know it almost one more series.
- 12:35Speaker 5: So if it can get them there, every other team
- 12:38Speaker 5: in the league. It's the proof is in the putting.
- 12:40Speaker 5: You know that the successes. It leaves clues. And I
- 12:43Speaker 5: think that winning shows up winning teams. And there's things
- 12:48Speaker 5: that I think you can't teach.
- 12:48Speaker 3: You real quick. Do you have your phone in your back? Bug?
- 12:51Speaker 6: Like I got a single, so my war just went
- 12:53Speaker 6: up point one?
- 12:56Speaker 4: Think about it. You don't look at it.
- 12:58Speaker 5: Yeah, every once in a while you might check get
- 13:00Speaker 5: out or whatever, but not too off a I try
- 13:02Speaker 5: to just play. I think baseball goes better when you
- 13:05Speaker 5: just play it. It's a game at the end of
- 13:06Speaker 5: the day.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Agreed.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, great call there, and yeah, er any Clement a
- 13:09Speaker 2: good example of what he did in the playoffs for
- 13:12Speaker 2: the Blue Jays. I mean, they wouldn't be where they
- 13:14Speaker 2: were without him last year in October, X, thanks for
- 13:18Speaker 2: joining us.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Great insight, man, and good luck this season.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks for having me, appreciate it.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Next up on the guest list, it's Chris Paddock joining us,
- 13:30Speaker 2: freshly signed with them Marlins a couple of weeks ago. Chris,
- 13:32Speaker 2: great to have you on man, It's good to see you,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and congrats on the deal. It was pretty recent. So
- 13:37Speaker 2: how is the off season leading up to this?
- 13:41Speaker 9: Yeah, first and foremost, thanks for having me man. I
- 13:44Speaker 9: love watching y'all show. But this is you know, can't
- 13:48Speaker 9: get much better. Seventy five eighty degrees in Jupiter, Florida.
- 13:52Speaker 9: You know, kind of a surreal moment for me this offseason.
- 13:55Speaker 9: This is a full circle opportunity for me. The team
- 14:00Speaker 9: that gave me the first first chance out of high
- 14:02Speaker 9: school back in twenty fifteen, the Miami Marlins, And what
- 14:06Speaker 9: an honor to be able to come back for the
- 14:08Speaker 9: twenty twenty sixth season to represent them in a big
- 14:11Speaker 9: league uniform.
- 14:12Speaker 6: What does that mean to you? I mean it means
- 14:14Speaker 6: you must have done something right and that you were
- 14:15Speaker 6: only here your time.
- 14:16Speaker 3: It means I'm getting old man, Well.
- 14:18Speaker 6: Yeah, but still, what does it mean to be able
- 14:20Speaker 6: to come back to a team. I know it's different
- 14:22Speaker 6: people here and everything, but at one time when you
- 14:25Speaker 6: were drafted because you were a high pick, you were like,
- 14:27Speaker 6: I'm gonna be a Marlin for life.
- 14:28Speaker 7: I'm gonna be there forever.
- 14:30Speaker 9: And now it's us later, you're back, you know, on
- 14:34Speaker 9: my way, you know, this offseason obviously free agent. You know,
- 14:38Speaker 9: whenever I made that decision to sign with the Marlins,
- 14:41Speaker 9: I drove from Texas. You know, it's roughly about twenty
- 14:44Speaker 9: hour drive. You have a lot of time to yourself
- 14:49Speaker 9: to think. And I really took in this moment of
- 14:53Speaker 9: hey man, the last time you were headed to the
- 14:55Speaker 9: East side of Florida, were you were a nineteen year
- 15:00Speaker 9: old kid out of high school chasing his dreams. You know,
- 15:03Speaker 9: just just really telling myself, don't forget that moment. You
- 15:06Speaker 9: know how much I enjoyed the game, how much you know,
- 15:09Speaker 9: how hard I work to get to that moment and
- 15:12Speaker 9: to kind of make this a full circle opportunity for
- 15:16Speaker 9: me of showing this organization why they draft me in
- 15:19Speaker 9: the first place, because you know, like you said, I
- 15:22Speaker 9: wasn't here very very fall in that first go around
- 15:24Speaker 9: with with the Marlins. Got traded in twenty sixteen to
- 15:27Speaker 9: the Padres for Fernando Rodney and being a young kid,
- 15:31Speaker 9: and I had no idea. I didn't know if that
- 15:33Speaker 9: was a good thing a bad thing at the time.
- 15:36Speaker 9: But here we are twenty twenty six, eleven years later
- 15:39Speaker 9: and really excited to be in Miami this year.
- 15:42Speaker 6: You mentioned the weather here in Jubiter. Now you know
- 15:44Speaker 6: when you go to Miami, it's gonna be about June July,
- 15:46Speaker 6: and you come in and your you know, your big
- 15:48Speaker 6: leather coat and your cowboy boots. It's gonna be hot.
- 15:51Speaker 6: R You might have to make a judge cowboy boy
- 15:54Speaker 6: boots is short.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I might. I'm gonna have to have like a seb too,
- 15:58Speaker 3: if I if I bring out the George, because it's
- 16:01Speaker 3: gonna be hot.
- 16:01Speaker 6: When you start walking, you're gonna get a little bit
- 16:03Speaker 6: sweat going just walking it from the parking.
- 16:05Speaker 9: Lot I'll sacrifice to look good. Okay, I can make
- 16:08Speaker 9: that sacrifice.
- 16:09Speaker 7: I'm just warning you now, you've got a long time
- 16:10Speaker 7: to go.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Absolutely, what if you.
- 16:13Speaker 8: Told if some people always ask like, would you rather
- 16:16Speaker 8: know what was ahead? Or would you rather have the
- 16:20Speaker 8: journey and not understand, not know what's going to happen?
- 16:23Speaker 8: If you talk to that nineteen year old kid and
- 16:25Speaker 8: told them all the things you'd go through, do you
- 16:27Speaker 8: think that nineteen year old kid would still have done
- 16:30Speaker 8: exactly what you've done?
- 16:34Speaker 9: Man, I would say, you know, I've loved my journey
- 16:39Speaker 9: so far in my baseball career. You know, it hasn't
- 16:43Speaker 9: been the prettiest journey, you know, from injuries to kind
- 16:47Speaker 9: of be in the spotlight my rookie season, to kind
- 16:50Speaker 9: of being on rock bottom with performance stuff and all
- 16:54Speaker 9: the things in between. But I've learned a lot about
- 16:57Speaker 9: myself as a as a grown man, not just on
- 17:00Speaker 9: the baseball field, but outside the baseball field as well.
- 17:05Speaker 9: And I think that that's the beauty of this game, right.
- 17:08Speaker 9: We're human beings at the end of the day. And
- 17:11Speaker 9: I think that nineteen year old kid, you know, I
- 17:15Speaker 9: would say, hey, go enjoy the journey, you know, everybody
- 17:18Speaker 9: has their own path. Right at a nineteen year old kid,
- 17:21Speaker 9: you work hard, you try, and you know, separate yourself
- 17:23Speaker 9: from the group in front of you all these things.
- 17:26Speaker 9: But when you get to this level, man, everybody is
- 17:29Speaker 9: just as good, if not better, and their path was
- 17:32Speaker 9: a little different of how they got there. So that
- 17:35Speaker 9: for me, man, it's it is a special moment for
- 17:39Speaker 9: me this year. I'm considered one of the veterans in
- 17:42Speaker 9: the clubhouse, one of the leaders in the clubhouse already,
- 17:45Speaker 9: and you know, I'm excited for that opportunity to share
- 17:49Speaker 9: my knowledge and help some of these younger guys that
- 17:52Speaker 9: we have in the rotation all the way through the
- 17:55Speaker 9: position player side as well, because coming up, man, I
- 17:59Speaker 9: had I had some awesome mentors and teammates uh as
- 18:03Speaker 9: A as a twenty three year old kid making my
- 18:05Speaker 9: major league debut debut over there in San Diego with
- 18:09Speaker 9: haw As Manny, you know Craig Stammon, which is a
- 18:12Speaker 9: surreal moment that he's he's a manager and was a
- 18:14Speaker 9: teammate of mine, uh Ian Kinsler, guys that I looked
- 18:18Speaker 9: up to at a young age and was able to
- 18:21Speaker 9: sit in the same locker room as those guys. They
- 18:23Speaker 9: were a leader for me at one point, and now
- 18:26Speaker 9: I get to pass the baton off and be a
- 18:28Speaker 9: leader in a clubhouse, and and I'm super excited for
- 18:30Speaker 9: that opportunity.
- 18:31Speaker 6: Have they talked to you starting relieving because you've kind
- 18:33Speaker 6: of done both. You obviously were a starter for a
- 18:34Speaker 6: long time. You kind of relieved last year at the end.
- 18:37Speaker 6: Have they talked to you about which side they're leaning
- 18:39Speaker 6: towards with you? We'll be a starter, were a starter?
- 18:42Speaker 6: Is that what you prefer? Obviously I've done that pretty
- 18:44Speaker 6: much your whole life, right, Yeah, it's you.
- 18:46Speaker 9: Know the when I got traded over Detroit last season
- 18:50Speaker 9: towards the end, you know that performance just wasn't backing
- 18:53Speaker 9: it up. You look at their rotation, you know I
- 18:57Speaker 9: had I had a gap to fill there and and
- 19:00Speaker 9: you know Aj over there called it pitching chaos when
- 19:02Speaker 9: it when it comes September, man, y'all know how important
- 19:05Speaker 9: those games are. It comes down to half a game,
- 19:07Speaker 9: one game, whatever it is. And there they thought that
- 19:10Speaker 9: the best fit for me was going to be coming
- 19:12Speaker 9: out of the bullpen, and I was, I was. I
- 19:15Speaker 9: accepted that, right, I couldn't. I didn't have something to
- 19:18Speaker 9: back it up. You know, I had a five and
- 19:19Speaker 9: a half era. My biggest goal last year was to
- 19:22Speaker 9: stay healthy, to show thirty teams that you know, the
- 19:27Speaker 9: injuries are behind me. I'm ready to get the ball
- 19:29Speaker 9: and I'm ready to pitch. And then in twenty three,
- 19:33Speaker 9: coming back from Tommy John, I came out of the
- 19:35Speaker 9: bullpen with the Twins, so I was I was already
- 19:37Speaker 9: familiar with it. You know, I wasn't just getting thrown
- 19:39Speaker 9: to the wolves. And mentally that was important for me
- 19:43Speaker 9: of knowing that I can do that already. H and I,
- 19:46Speaker 9: you know, shook AJ's hand and I said, hey, man,
- 19:49Speaker 9: you know, if you need me out of the bullpen,
- 19:50Speaker 9: I'll be ready to go. But you know, talking to
- 19:53Speaker 9: the coaches here, talking with the front office early offseason,
- 19:57Speaker 9: I will be a starter and excited to be behind
- 20:00Speaker 9: Sandy and Uri and learn from those guys.
- 20:04Speaker 8: Which do you like better? Obviously he came up as
- 20:07Speaker 8: a starter, But which do you like better? Starting or relieving?
- 20:10Speaker 8: Like there, we just talked to Tyler Phillips. That dude's like, man,
- 20:14Speaker 8: he's he's high on relieving. He loves it.
- 20:16Speaker 9: Yeah, uh, you know, I don't slap myself in the
- 20:20Speaker 9: face by any means, maybe try. Uh you know, I
- 20:24Speaker 9: don't wear the cool glasses. You know, I feel like
- 20:27Speaker 9: I'm not I'm I'm too I'm not weird enough to
- 20:31Speaker 9: be a bullpen guy yet. Maybe maybe on the back
- 20:34Speaker 9: end of my career, but me personally, I really do
- 20:38Speaker 9: enjoy starting, you know. That's That's what I've done most
- 20:42Speaker 9: of my career. Uh, you know, I've had I've had
- 20:45Speaker 9: a couple bullpen outings, you know, in twenty three, like
- 20:49Speaker 9: I said earlier, with the Twins coming to out of
- 20:50Speaker 9: playoffs and then last year with Detroit of just you know,
- 20:54Speaker 9: having that role of going into September with the pitching
- 20:58Speaker 9: chaos that they called it over there. But uh, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 9: I think I was born to be a starter and
- 21:03Speaker 9: I have a lot to show for this this upcoming season.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Hey, Chris, question for you.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Can you go over some of the changes you made,
- 21:14Speaker 2: I know last year some pitch mixed changes and then
- 21:16Speaker 2: curious if Detroy tried to change you again once you
- 21:19Speaker 2: got there, because I'm always curious about the balance, right you.
- 21:22Speaker 2: You want to adapt and evolve in play your strengths
- 21:25Speaker 2: and take tips from teams, but it's also your career.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So what was that journey like over the past year
- 21:32Speaker 2: or so.
- 21:34Speaker 9: Uh, you know, it's it's been. It's been a lot
- 21:37Speaker 9: of a lot of things for me. You know, most
- 21:41Speaker 9: of my career, I've I've been a north South guy.
- 21:44Speaker 9: I feel like I still am a North South guy.
- 21:46Speaker 9: Fastballs at the top, change up underneath. But I'm starting
- 21:52Speaker 9: to learn that these hitters, man, they're so good and
- 21:56Speaker 9: they get paid the big bucks to swing the bat right. Well,
- 21:59Speaker 9: this if a hitter's comfortable knowing that Chris Baddick's throwing
- 22:03Speaker 9: strikes and that he can eliminate pitches, whether it's my
- 22:06Speaker 9: breaking ball, whether it's a slider, curveball, and only focused
- 22:09Speaker 9: north South. Now they're fifty to fifty right. If they
- 22:12Speaker 9: guess right and I make a mistake, you know, it's
- 22:15Speaker 9: usually gonna cost me. So not necessarily performance base that
- 22:19Speaker 9: we're changing anything. When I went over to Detroit, it
- 22:23Speaker 9: was them, you know, saying that they love my arsenal,
- 22:26Speaker 9: they love kind of what I bring to the table.
- 22:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 22:30Speaker 9: Unfortunately I just didn't click over there with not being
- 22:33Speaker 9: able to put together some good starts for them. That's
- 22:36Speaker 9: why I got moved out to the bullpen. That's why
- 22:38Speaker 9: I was off the playoff rosters, you know, so that
- 22:41Speaker 9: hurt and I went into the off season, you know,
- 22:45Speaker 9: excited to see what teams wanted me for the new
- 22:48Speaker 9: opportunity of being my you know, this my first free
- 22:51Speaker 9: agent year and coming over here.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Man.
- 22:54Speaker 9: You know, some of the media asked me a couple
- 22:56Speaker 9: of days ago when I got done pitching, what's one
- 22:59Speaker 9: thing that you've enjoyed being a Marlin? And it's not
- 23:04Speaker 9: necessarily for me. It's the small things and this this
- 23:09Speaker 9: coaching staff man, they believe in me. They've told me
- 23:13Speaker 9: that from day one, and I feel like as athletes,
- 23:16Speaker 9: sometimes we need that reassurance sometimes, you know, sometimes this
- 23:20Speaker 9: is a game of failure. We take home our thoughts,
- 23:23Speaker 9: we're away from our families. You know, sometimes it's just us.
- 23:26Speaker 9: So it's important to have some coaches, some teammates that
- 23:30Speaker 9: believe in you to remind you who you are and
- 23:32Speaker 9: what you're capable of.
- 23:33Speaker 3: And that's exactly what this group has done. You know.
- 23:36Speaker 9: The guys in the locker room have have welcomed me
- 23:39Speaker 9: with open arms. They're excited for me to be a
- 23:41Speaker 9: part of this group. And we're hungry, man. We do
- 23:44Speaker 9: have a young staff from top to bottom, and I'm
- 23:49Speaker 9: here to contribute anyway I can. You know, like I
- 23:51Speaker 9: said earlier, I don't have all the answers, but I
- 23:53Speaker 9: knew I do know a thing or two and I'm
- 23:55Speaker 9: excited to learn from them. And we hop on the
- 23:58Speaker 9: horse and we all ride together. Are you okay with
- 24:01Speaker 9: them calling pitches from the dugout? Have they talk to
- 24:03Speaker 9: you about that? Because we had We had Clayton and
- 24:05Speaker 9: I asked him about that. Yeah, so can you still
- 24:08Speaker 9: shake them off?
- 24:08Speaker 3: Are you okay?
- 24:09Speaker 5: Hey?
- 24:09Speaker 7: You know, I don't really think so.
- 24:11Speaker 9: So, you know what, I had my zoom call with
- 24:14Speaker 9: the Marlins early off season. You know, these are these
- 24:18Speaker 9: are the conversations, right I had my agent on the
- 24:20Speaker 9: phone call with me of just answering these questions or
- 24:25Speaker 9: asking these questions that we needed answers to, especially at
- 24:28Speaker 9: this level. And one of those things was that got
- 24:31Speaker 9: brought up was the pitch design bullpens, which is basically
- 24:35Speaker 9: you're throwing a bullpen on the game mound, hitters are swinging.
- 24:39Speaker 9: You got all the electronics that you need as far
- 24:41Speaker 9: as track man data all that.
- 24:44Speaker 3: That was a.
- 24:44Speaker 9: Conversation that I would love to bring up to you
- 24:47Speaker 9: in a little bit. But to answer your question, uh,
- 24:50Speaker 9: you know, Rob calls the pictures from the dugout and uh,
- 24:54Speaker 9: I tell him he gets to play MLB the show
- 24:56Speaker 9: every day, you know, the live the live version.
- 24:58Speaker 6: There's one him. What's that It ain't a video game
- 25:01Speaker 6: that it go. It doesn't go where you want it.
- 25:03Speaker 9: And it's it's not his runs, it's mine, you know,
- 25:05Speaker 9: That's what I tell uh. But he gets to play
- 25:07Speaker 9: THEMLB the Show every day. Make it fun.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 25:11Speaker 9: But on a serious note, we do have the ability
- 25:14Speaker 9: to shake off. My last outing I shook off on
- 25:17Speaker 9: a three to two is to get to the pitch
- 25:19Speaker 9: that I wanted we execute it got to swing a miss.
- 25:23Speaker 9: But for me personally, right, there's there's a lot of
- 25:27Speaker 9: stuff that I've taken in the last couple of years
- 25:29Speaker 9: out to the mountain, whether it's good or bad, and
- 25:33Speaker 9: my head does never. You know, when you're on that
- 25:35Speaker 9: island alone, man, you can work on the mental toughness,
- 25:39Speaker 9: all the you know, your breath work, all the things.
- 25:42Speaker 9: When you're on that island alone, man, you blackout.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Uh.
- 25:45Speaker 9: And sometimes we overthink, we overprocess things, we forget, you know,
- 25:49Speaker 9: runners on second and third two outs. We forget the
- 25:52Speaker 9: situation because the game speeds up. If if rob calling
- 25:56Speaker 9: pictures from the dugout on looking at the cheat sheet
- 25:59Speaker 9: that they have, trusting his eyes, trusting our catchers, trust
- 26:03Speaker 9: you know, just the games in front of him. And
- 26:05Speaker 9: if that takes a little bit of stress off my
- 26:07Speaker 9: shoulders and I can just execute whatever's been called, I
- 26:10Speaker 9: think we're going to be in a really good spot,
- 26:12Speaker 9: becaus just not shake the catcher call every bit, you know,
- 26:15Speaker 9: you look at or the or the pitching coach to
- 26:18Speaker 9: the coach and the dugout now right, I mean, Mark Burley, Criselle,
- 26:20Speaker 9: don't shake. They don't have to think then, And I
- 26:23Speaker 9: think for me, you know, we do our homework during
- 26:26Speaker 9: the week. You at the end of the day, you're
- 26:28Speaker 9: trying to compete with whoever's in the box. But sometimes
- 26:31Speaker 9: we catch ourselves giving them too much credit and then
- 26:34Speaker 9: you're not really competing. You already lost that battle. Right
- 26:37Speaker 9: So at the end of the day, if I hear fastball,
- 26:39Speaker 9: if I hear a change of if I hear curveball,
- 26:41Speaker 9: sweep or slider, whatever, Okay, it's like, okay, let me
- 26:45Speaker 9: execute right here. I know who's on base. I know
- 26:48Speaker 9: the situation, I know who I'm facing, I know what
- 26:50Speaker 9: count it is. I'm able to slow it down because
- 26:53Speaker 9: I've already that that that's already handled for me from
- 26:56Speaker 9: the dugout. And then the second thing, and this is
- 27:00Speaker 9: this is talking for me, not talking for the team.
- 27:03Speaker 9: You know, everybody has their own mixture reviews on it,
- 27:06Speaker 9: but the pitches on bullpens man are gonna It's gonna
- 27:09Speaker 9: change my career. It's going to change my season this year.
- 27:12Speaker 9: I know that's a bold statement because we haven't even
- 27:15Speaker 9: started the season yet, but I truly am excited to
- 27:19Speaker 9: see what that can do for me as an individual,
- 27:21Speaker 9: because sometimes four or five days in between starts is
- 27:27Speaker 9: too much time. You know, you come off a bad outing.
- 27:30Speaker 9: What do we want to do. We want to get
- 27:31Speaker 9: back out there, right we come off of good outing.
- 27:33Speaker 9: We want to we want to keep those tools sharpened.
- 27:35Speaker 9: And that's exactly what that is for. You get to
- 27:38Speaker 9: sharpen your tools, you get to compete against your teammates,
- 27:41Speaker 9: you get live reads, you get live feedback. The only
- 27:45Speaker 9: con that I have with that is you have to
- 27:46Speaker 9: manage the volume. At the end of the day, I
- 27:49Speaker 9: got to be ready to pitch day five or day six,
- 27:52Speaker 9: because that that truly doesn't that doesn't go in the
- 27:55Speaker 9: back of a baseball card. You know that day five
- 27:58Speaker 9: or day six, whenever Skip gives me the ball said,
- 28:01Speaker 9: it's your day, that's what matters. So if I can
- 28:03Speaker 9: manage the volume all season, that right there is going
- 28:06Speaker 9: to be able to sharpen my tools. I'm able to
- 28:08Speaker 9: get those live reads, live feedback, reading swings, and being
- 28:12Speaker 9: able to work those stressful situations that happen in game
- 28:16Speaker 9: to strike execution, runners on base get out of it.
- 28:19Speaker 9: You know whatever that looks like, right me and Rob
- 28:21Speaker 9: Colin pitches, Hey man, we're not on the same page.
- 28:24Speaker 9: Let's use that to work on some things. And I
- 28:27Speaker 9: think it's a full circle opportunity for me as an individual.
- 28:30Speaker 9: Like I said, I know, different starters, different bullpen guys
- 28:33Speaker 9: have their own reviews on it, but I truly am
- 28:36Speaker 9: excited to take that into the twenty twenty sixth season.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Well we look forward to it, right.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, Chris, great stuff man, always great to catch up
- 28:45Speaker 2: with your good.
- 28:45Speaker 7: Luck this season.
- 28:46Speaker 2: We'll catch at some point during this season. Yeah, exactly,
- 28:48Speaker 2: A j that's what you did buying the plate right
