- 0:00Hey hey-welcome back to The Science of Leading.
- 0:02I'm Claire Monroe, and-of course-joining me is the calm,
- 0:05collected voice of reason himself... Edwin Carrington.
- 0:09How's it going today?
- 0:09Doing well,
- 0:11Claire.
- 0:11Always good to be here.
- 0:12And honestly?
- 0:13This topic...
- 0:14it hits close to home.
- 0:16Lotta history-lotta mistakes-wrapped up in this one.
- 0:16Ooooh okay,
- 0:20now that I wanna hear about.
- 0:21So today we're diving into, like...
- 0:23why your gut instinct might not be the best hiring strategy anymore.
- 0:26Which-I mean-it sounds obvious,
- 0:29but it's kinda crazy how many leaders still just go with their gut.
- 0:32Why do you think that is?
- 0:32Ah, part habit... part ego,
- 0:36maybe.
- 0:36There's this idea that if you've been around long enough,
- 0:40you can just, you know-read people.
- 0:42Trust your instinct.
- 0:42But the truth is,
- 0:46I've seen that go sideways more times than I care to count.
- 0:50I remember back in...
- 0:52late '80s, maybe '89 or so, I was at this fast-growing tech startup.
- 0:57We were hiring like crazy.
- 1:00And I made a call-just a gut call-on someone who,
- 1:04on paper, looked great.
- 1:06Said all the right things.
- 1:08Had that "it" factor.
- 1:08But six months in?
- 1:12It was clear they weren't a fit.
- 1:14The team dynamic got weird, trust eroded,
- 1:18and turnover... spiked.
- 1:20It ended up costing us way more than just a bad hire.
- 1:20Yikes.
- 1:24And I've totally seen that too-companies holding onto these,
- 1:27like, super unstructured interviews...
- 1:29vague job descriptions... and then they're surprised when no one sticks
- 1:33around.
- 1:33It's just easier to go with your gut than to actually build a system,
- 1:37right?
- 1:37It is easier.
- 1:38But it's also riskier.
- 1:38There was one company-no names,
- 1:43of course-where the whole process boiled down to "Do we like this person?"
- 1:47No structure, no benchmarks.
- 1:49Just vibes.
- 1:50And surprise, surprise-turnover was high.
- 1:54Teams didn't trust each other,
- 1:56because expectations were all over the place.
- 1:56That's what happens when
- 2:00you lead with instinct and ignore the data.
- 2:00Yeah,
- 2:02and it's not just about one bad hire.
- 2:04Like... it spreads.
- 2:06One person's misalignment can totally throw off the whole team.
- 2:06So,
- 2:10if gut instinct isn't enough...
- 2:11what is?
- 2:12What's the fix?
- 2:12First step?
- 2:14Get crystal clear on what the role really needs.
- 2:14Not just tasks-but what
- 2:20success looks like.
- 2:21What behaviors lead to the right outcomes.
- 2:21And then,
- 2:25back it up with data.
- 2:26Tools like the OAD behavioral assessment can show you what top performers
- 2:31in the role have in common-so you're not just guessing.
- 2:34You're measuring alignment.
- 2:34Okay,
- 2:37so... if I'm a hiring manager listening to this-what do I change first?
- 2:41Like... is it the job description?
- 2:43The way we interview?
- 2:44Or...?Start with the job description.
- 2:44Most are just-too vague.
- 2:50Buzzwordy.
- 2:50Use your top performers as the baseline.
- 2:55Pull from performance data, even your ATS if you've got one,
- 2:59to figure out what really matters.
- 2:59And co-create expectations with your
- 3:03team.
- 3:04When you do that-you attract people who see themselves in the role.
- 3:08The rest?
- 3:09They self-select out.
- 3:09That reminds me-there was this retail chain I read
- 3:13about?
- 3:13They used to do, like, five or six rounds of interviews.
- 3:16Same questions over and over.
- 3:18Exhausting.
- 3:18But once they added structure-and some behavioral assessments-they
- 3:23filled roles faster and had way fewer mis-hires.
- 3:26It's kind of wild how just having a process changes everything.
- 3:26Absolutely.
- 3:26Streamlining
- 3:32doesn't mean rushing-it just means focusing.
- 3:32Use structured interviews.
- 3:37Score candidates on what actually predicts success.
- 3:40Cut the fluff.
- 3:40When you use the right tools-like OAD-you can spot fit
- 3:46early.
- 3:47Saves time, saves morale.
- 3:47And it's not just about skills,
- 3:51right?
- 3:51Like... someone might be amazing technically but still just... not mesh with
- 3:55the team.
- 3:55Exactly.
- 3:57Traits like adaptability, initiative,
- 3:59collaboration-those matter.
- 3:59If you're only looking at resumes or technical
- 4:04tests, you're flying blind.
- 4:04But if you bring in behavioral assessments
- 4:09and real structure, you start seeing the full picture.
- 4:12And that's where smart hiring happens.
- 4:12So it's not about making the process
- 4:17longer-it's about making it smarter.
- 4:19I like that.
- 4:19But let's be real for a second.
- 4:22Isn't there a risk of making hiring feel...
- 4:24too robotic?
- 4:24Totally fair question.
- 4:24The best systems use data to inform
- 4:30human decisions-not replace them.
- 4:30I've seen executive teams use AI,
- 4:36machine learning, behavioral data-all to guide decisions.
- 4:40Not to make them.
- 4:40Things like DEI analytics or OAD assessments can flag
- 4:46blind spots.
- 4:47Predict success.
- 4:48Help balance the team.
- 4:50But in the end?
- 4:51It's still people making the call.
- 4:51Right-there was this global company
- 4:55I read about.
- 4:56They used behavioral data to, like,
- 4:58spot hidden bias in their process.
- 5:00And they actually increased diversity without lowering the bar.
- 5:00But yeah...
- 5:04it's that balance, right?
- 5:05Use the numbers-but don't forget the people behind them.
- 5:05Exactly.
- 5:05It takes
- 5:10discipline.
- 5:11You need clean, reliable data.
- 5:13And you've gotta keep reviewing your process.
- 5:13Look at what's working.
- 5:17Talk to your team.
- 5:19Talk to candidates.
- 5:19The best organizations treat hiring as an ongoing
- 5:23system.
- 5:24Always optimizing.
- 5:26Always learning.
- 5:26And they never lose sight of the human experience.
- 5:30That's how you build real trust.
- 5:32That's how you build teams that last.
- 5:32I love that.
- 5:35It's not just about, like, filling seats-it's about building something
- 5:38sustainable.
- 5:38And with all the tools we have now... the companies that combine
- 5:42data with empathy?
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:43Those are the ones that win.
- 5:43Couldn't have said it better.
- 5:43Hiring smarter
- 5:49isn't about being perfect.
- 5:50It's about being intentional-with the right tools,
- 5:53the right mindset, and the right people.
- 5:53And if you're thinking,
- 5:57"Okay, I want to start doing this better"-OAD can help.
- 5:57You can actually
- 6:01book a free demo at O-A-D-DOT-A-I-and see how tools like their behavioral
- 6:06survey can make your hiring process... just work.
- 6:09For everyone involved.
- 6:09That's right.
- 6:11You don't have to rely on guesswork anymore.
- 6:14There's science behind better hiring-and OAD's bringing that science
- 6:18to life.
- 6:18Alright, we're gonna wrap it there for today.
- 6:21We'll be back soon with more from The Science of Leading.
- 6:24Until then... keep learning, keep growing,
- 6:26and please-stop trusting your gut.
- 6:26Goodbye,
- 6:29Claire.
- 6:29Goodbye, everyone.
