Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garren.
- 0:07Speaker 2: This name. If you're in the New York area and
- 0:09Speaker 2: listen to am Ninsen and the answer and know the
- 0:11Speaker 2: intern history of the Joe Piscopo Show might ring a bell.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Max Cohen is on my line on the one Log
- 0:17Speaker 2: Up Network. Max. Great to reconnect with you.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Absolutely, Alex. I appreciate you having me on here.
- 0:23Speaker 2: You are about eight years later we're talking here and
- 0:28Speaker 2: now you're a sportscaster of the year in Alabama. Can
- 0:31Speaker 2: we start there please? Yeah?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Absolutely. I mean it's crazy.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It's a little bit different than being an intern for
- 0:37Speaker 3: Joe Piscopos, that's a fact.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But we were just talking.
- 0:41Speaker 3: About, you know, me and Joe Sibilia doing our post
- 0:44Speaker 3: Piscopos shows that we did on Facebook Live years ago.
- 0:47Speaker 3: So I don't know that there's any real correlation between
- 0:49Speaker 3: the two.
- 0:50Speaker 1: But this is what I've.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Always wanted to do, and with piscopol I got my
- 0:53Speaker 3: foot in the door in the industry. And here I am.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I want to know as a as a kid who
- 0:58Speaker 2: lived in New York, right, You're an island or city.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Kid, born in the city, raised in Rockland.
- 1:04Speaker 2: County up sacke Well was a kid from up here.
- 1:06Speaker 2: How did you end up in out Auburn and Alabama?
- 1:09Speaker 2: Let's start there.
- 1:10Speaker 3: So I was at Syracuse, I interned on the Piscopo Show,
- 1:14Speaker 3: and then when I graduated, moved out to Idaho. Spent
- 1:17Speaker 3: two years reporting out there, and then in twenty twenty
- 1:21Speaker 3: started looking for sports jobs. And it was pre pandemic,
- 1:25Speaker 3: nothing had gotten crazy yet, and I saw the opportunity
- 1:28Speaker 3: to cover Auburn and Alabama. I applied here and I've
- 1:31Speaker 3: been here ever since.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And what I mean, the iron Ball every year is exciting.
- 1:35Speaker 2: And you must have been there or was that a
- 1:37Speaker 2: little before you? Because I had that huge the year
- 1:40Speaker 2: Borrow beat Bama, then Auburn Babama. You were about a
- 1:43Speaker 2: year after that, I think, right.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, that was right before I got here.
- 1:47Speaker 2: But you have seen some exciting games at the iron Ball,
- 1:49Speaker 2: haven't you.
- 1:50Speaker 3: My first Iron Bowl that I ever attended was the
- 1:53Speaker 3: quadruple overtime one. That was the one where Alabama was
- 1:57Speaker 3: down with fifty seconds on the clock and Bright Young
- 2:00Speaker 3: led them on that drive and then eventually won it
- 2:03Speaker 3: in overtime. That was insane. And then two years after
- 2:07Speaker 3: that was the fourth and thirty one Grave Digger Milroe miracle.
- 2:11Speaker 3: And I was standing about five feet from where that
- 2:14Speaker 3: touchdown pass came down.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And you put that on video on your ex account,
- 2:17Speaker 2: didn't you?
- 2:18Speaker 3: I absolutely did. I mean, when you get a shot
- 2:20Speaker 3: that good, you got to share it with the people.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Absolutely, all right. I gotta ask this because it seems
- 2:24Speaker 2: like you're very involved with Auburn. You were in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: Final four stages with them, and byway, Bruce Pearl is
- 2:30Speaker 2: an awesome guy I hear, and whatnot? Do you become
- 2:33Speaker 2: more of a fan and less of a journalist or
- 2:35Speaker 2: how do you keep that fine line.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I've tried to remain not a fan of any of
- 2:40Speaker 3: the teams I cover, because I think it allows me
- 2:43Speaker 3: to be the most fair and unbiased if I don't
- 2:46Speaker 3: have a vested interest. No, I will say, obviously, you're
- 2:49Speaker 3: usually enjoying covering a win more than a loss, so
- 2:53Speaker 3: there are some things that go one way or the
- 2:55Speaker 3: other with that. But I try and remain removed from
- 2:58Speaker 3: having any connection to the team. But at the same time,
- 3:01Speaker 3: you know, when you're at the Final four, you're thinking, man,
- 3:03Speaker 3: i'd really like to cover a national championship game.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, And you know what that was? A wild game.
- 3:09Speaker 2: But Florida, Hey, I guess if you're on that side,
- 3:12Speaker 2: you want to lose the champion, I guess, And that's
- 3:14Speaker 2: how it worked out.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and not just lost to them once, they lost
- 3:18Speaker 1: to them twice.
- 3:18Speaker 3: So I guess if they're looking at anything and they're
- 3:21Speaker 3: seeing the two losses on the record, well two of
- 3:22Speaker 3: them came to the team that won the National championship.
- 3:25Speaker 2: One guy that stood out though most of the tournament
- 3:27Speaker 2: was Johnny Broom. Did you get the doctor chance a
- 3:30Speaker 2: chance talk to him at all over the season? What's
- 3:32Speaker 2: he like?
- 3:32Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 3:33Speaker 3: So, Jen I's been here I think three years. When
- 3:37Speaker 3: he came in. I didn't know much about him, but
- 3:40Speaker 3: he really established himself immediately. Unbelievable guy. And I was
- 3:45Speaker 3: in the locker room right after the loss. This is
- 3:47Speaker 3: a guy that absolutely hates losing. He was in a
- 3:50Speaker 3: terrible mood and you can't blame him im and just
- 3:52Speaker 3: lost a chance at playing for the national championship. But
- 3:55Speaker 3: if you watched any of his run during the tournament,
- 3:58Speaker 3: just the guy who was not willing to quit at
- 4:00Speaker 3: any point and was going to find a way to
- 4:02Speaker 3: make the most ridiculous shots hit the bottom of the net.
- 4:05Speaker 2: All right. You know, Auburn is one of the scores
- 4:07Speaker 2: that predeminitantly is defined by football. But what's it like
- 4:09Speaker 2: to see the basketball team do well at the same time.
- 4:13Speaker 3: It's been crazy, to be honest with you, because when
- 4:14Speaker 3: I came down here, they were just coming off their
- 4:16Speaker 3: first ever Final four run, and I thought, you know what,
- 4:19Speaker 3: that's probably an anomaly. They'll probably be good, But another
- 4:22Speaker 3: Final Four, I didn't think that was possible. And then
- 4:25Speaker 3: I got here and there was a period where they
- 4:28Speaker 3: had two lottery picks at the same time. They had
- 4:31Speaker 3: Walker Kessler and Jabari Smith, both of who are making
- 4:33Speaker 3: a name for themselves in the NBA right now. And
- 4:35Speaker 3: once I saw that they were bringing those guys in
- 4:37Speaker 3: after the Final Four, I said, all right, they might
- 4:40Speaker 3: be doing something special. Little did I know Alabama would
- 4:42Speaker 3: also be right behind them. But it's been crazy because
- 4:46Speaker 3: for a long time the SEC was all football, and
- 4:48Speaker 3: then you had Kentucky basketball.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Well, you know, it's just because Alabama also had a
- 4:52Speaker 2: bit of a run this year too in basketball. But
- 4:55Speaker 2: have you been up to Alabama, you know, to the
- 4:58Speaker 2: Crimson Tis Well, have you covered games there also?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah? I cover both. It's pretty much fifty to fifty.
- 5:03Speaker 3: You know, another great program right now that's recruiting some
- 5:06Speaker 3: really great talent. Obviously their football is a little bit
- 5:09Speaker 3: ahead of where auburns is. But things are different now
- 5:12Speaker 3: that Nick Saban's gone. Although it does seem like Kaylin
- 5:15Speaker 3: de Borr is trying to win people over, it's tough.
- 5:18Speaker 2: You know, Bryce Young you mentioned it, I want to
- 5:20Speaker 2: go back to him for a second, really promising, and
- 5:22Speaker 2: then it just sort of like fell up. What was
- 5:24Speaker 2: did he not just well do you think I mean
- 5:26Speaker 2: you did talk to him when he went in Alabama?
- 5:29Speaker 3: Yeah, when he was at Alabama, I mean, super confident
- 5:31Speaker 3: and obviously he had great pieces around him and a
- 5:34Speaker 3: great system. I don't know if we've seen the last
- 5:37Speaker 3: of him.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I think, you know, it might not be.
- 5:39Speaker 3: The best situation to get drafted into, and he's had
- 5:42Speaker 3: to deal with a lot, but the guy's got lots
- 5:45Speaker 3: and lots of talent. He can scramble, he can throw,
- 5:48Speaker 3: he can find a way out of a sack and
- 5:50Speaker 3: make it a twenty yard game.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I saw him do it countless times.
- 5:53Speaker 3: And as we just mentioned, with that quadruple overtime Auburn
- 5:57Speaker 3: Alabama game, I mean the guy's clutch, so it just
- 6:01Speaker 3: takes a little bit of time. I'm sure anybody who's
- 6:03Speaker 3: played in the NFL will tell you the NFL's world's
- 6:06Speaker 3: different than college.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Absolutely. And on the Auburn side, I mean, look, yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 2: your coach Tommy tullerb will going to senate. I mean,
- 6:12Speaker 2: Auburn always seems to be in the news one way
- 6:14Speaker 2: or the other.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Yeah, you can say that. I mean he's still showing
- 6:18Speaker 3: up at some of the games. I saw him on
- 6:19Speaker 3: the sidelines a couple of times this year, and he
- 6:22Speaker 3: took a picture with Nick Saban somewhere recently, you know,
- 6:25Speaker 3: so obviously, even though they used to be rivals, they're
- 6:27Speaker 3: still in communication.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Talk about the alumni part, because obviously Alabama and Auburn
- 6:33Speaker 2: I stem alumni that come back. Do you ever get
- 6:35Speaker 2: to talk to those.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Guys every now and then?
- 6:37Speaker 3: You know, there's guys like Charles Barkley and Bo Jackson
- 6:40Speaker 3: that show up at all.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Barkley during the tournament, you saw every reaction from him, right.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Yes, some of them do not hide their allegiance to
- 6:48Speaker 3: the university. I'd say the coolest alumni I got to
- 6:51Speaker 3: talk to was actually on the Alabama side homecoming maybe
- 6:56Speaker 3: two years ago. I got to have a little chat
- 6:58Speaker 3: with Joe Namath on the sideline.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It's very cool. Yeah, and of course name it a
- 7:03Speaker 2: legend down there and up here, you know, of course
- 7:06Speaker 2: free But I got to ask you about the SEC.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You mentioned them. I believe I saw fifteen. Is it
- 7:12Speaker 2: fifteen teams that made from the SEC in basketball or
- 7:15Speaker 2: I believe it was fourteen, which was the most ever
- 7:18Speaker 2: for any conference. And why is that? I feel like,
- 7:21Speaker 2: you know, conferences up here, like the Big East and
- 7:23Speaker 2: all that, should be more invested in how many teams
- 7:26Speaker 2: make it. Did the SEC do some kind of evaluation
- 7:29Speaker 2: as to how to improve the basketball programs or what
- 7:32Speaker 2: went down there?
- 7:32Speaker 1: You know, it's such a great question.
- 7:34Speaker 3: I think part of it was adding Oklahoma and Texas,
- 7:37Speaker 3: and I don't know if that's necessarily why they had
- 7:40Speaker 3: as many teams as they did. Now the conference is
- 7:42Speaker 3: bigger than it was two years ago. But at the
- 7:44Speaker 3: same time, I think there's been a concerted effort among
- 7:48Speaker 3: the conference teams to say, all right, we've done what
- 7:50Speaker 3: we've done in football, but we can do more in basketball.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And I think they're bringing in better coaches also, having
- 7:56Speaker 3: this name, image and likeness things.
- 7:58Speaker 2: All il right.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Now, it's a game changer that in the transfer portal
- 8:03Speaker 3: they can get players that they wouldn't have been able
- 8:05Speaker 3: to get in the past and keep them in some cases.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Now remind me of Tennessee's and the SEC I need
- 8:11Speaker 2: a reminder on that. But today we just saw the
- 8:13Speaker 2: kid not show up because of NIL negotiations. As a
- 8:17Speaker 2: sports fan, I'm sure we're both concerned that that's going
- 8:20Speaker 2: to be destroying the sport more than helping if that's
- 8:23Speaker 2: the case, right.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Nico is a super talented quarterback and
- 8:28Speaker 3: there's a reason that he's trying to demand that money
- 8:29Speaker 3: because he thinks he's worth it. And it is crazy
- 8:32Speaker 3: that we're at a stage where a college player can say, Hey,
- 8:36Speaker 3: I might be attending this university right now, but if
- 8:38Speaker 3: you're not paying me the amount of money I want,
- 8:40Speaker 3: I'll go play at Ohio State.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I'll go play at Colorado.
- 8:43Speaker 2: And I remember Ohio State was willing to throw the
- 8:45Speaker 2: kitchen sink the kitchen sink at Marvin Harrison Junior. That's
- 8:49Speaker 2: what I knew. Boy, O boy, We're in a different era,
- 8:52Speaker 2: and I you know, I also think This tournament though,
- 8:55Speaker 2: for basketball, showed the reinvention of two coaches. Okay, cap
- 9:00Speaker 2: with Arkansas and and Bruce per because Bruce had that
- 9:04Speaker 2: legendary career kind of went off and now he's back
- 9:08Speaker 2: on the seat again.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's definitely been wild, especially with coach cal because
- 9:13Speaker 3: of the fact that nobody knew what he was really
- 9:17Speaker 3: doing when he left Kentucky. You're like, okay, Arkansas, are
- 9:19Speaker 3: you sure? And then he goes in, they go on
- 9:22Speaker 3: this run, they take down Saint John's. It's two former
- 9:25Speaker 3: Kentucky head coaches going against each other. And I think
- 9:28Speaker 3: a lot of people, especially if anybody made a bracket,
- 9:30Speaker 3: most times you're taking Saint John's over Arkansas in that
- 9:33Speaker 3: I sure did.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah, most people did.
- 9:36Speaker 3: And I think coach Calb proved he knows what he's
- 9:38Speaker 3: doing and he's here to put together a winner at Arkansas.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And actually I Kansas being Arkansas, so he really made
- 9:45Speaker 2: a bit of a run there from the beginning. To
- 9:47Speaker 2: knock on Bill Sealth, all right, it sounds to me
- 9:49Speaker 2: you've got a knowledge of the SEC. Is that just
- 9:51Speaker 2: because you've been around the league now for a long
- 9:54Speaker 2: time or what?
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess so I mean, I wasn't so invested
- 9:58Speaker 3: in it before I got down here, but once you're
- 10:00Speaker 3: down here, you kind of have to focus on it.
- 10:02Speaker 3: It's almost all you talk about. You're running too somewhere
- 10:04Speaker 3: at the grocery store, they want to talk about it.
- 10:06Speaker 3: I mean, don't forget SEC baseball is also amazing on
- 10:09Speaker 3: top of everything else. So it's just fun because it
- 10:15Speaker 3: really is a conference just full of winning, and it's
- 10:18Speaker 3: fun to see a team come into town and you go,
- 10:21Speaker 3: all right, well this was a good game, and then
- 10:22Speaker 3: that team goes on to win the national championship.
- 10:24Speaker 1: It's just fun.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I was going to say, Alabama. Everybody thinks of it like, well,
- 10:28Speaker 2: there's only two college towns and what else is there
- 10:31Speaker 2: to do? But how have you found You found yourself
- 10:33Speaker 2: pretty busy in these college towns. What do you do
- 10:36Speaker 2: when you're not covering these teams?
- 10:39Speaker 1: Relaxing a lot?
- 10:40Speaker 3: I do a lot of relaxing. I work long hours,
- 10:43Speaker 3: but there's a lot of stuff to do.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I mean, you catch UFL games because I think they're
- 10:47Speaker 2: still down in Birmingham, right the Stallions are still down here.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I have not been to a game, but I don't know,
- 10:56Speaker 3: you know, it's a little odd with that because the
- 10:58Speaker 3: games are going on, but those stadiums.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Are never full.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Then the weird thing is Birmingham's the best team in
- 11:03Speaker 3: the league, and they have been for the couple of
- 11:06Speaker 3: years that that league's been around. But it doesn't seem
- 11:09Speaker 3: like the spring football things really catching on, to be
- 11:11Speaker 3: honest with yet.
- 11:12Speaker 2: It's it's tough to get although the TV ratings seem
- 11:15Speaker 2: to be doing okay. But you know, I get what
- 11:17Speaker 2: you're saying also, And it's also warm. Now is it
- 11:21Speaker 2: warm down there for football or is.
- 11:23Speaker 1: It what it is? Yeah?
- 11:24Speaker 3: I think we're hovering around the high sixties, low seventies,
- 11:28Speaker 3: and you know you'll get an occasional rain storm and
- 11:30Speaker 3: some lower temperatures, but it's already pretty warm down.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Here, all right. Do you feel the ghosts of the
- 11:36Speaker 2: sec especially when it comes to Auburn And I want
- 11:38Speaker 2: to mention Bear Brian in Alabama because when you go
- 11:40Speaker 2: to these teams, do you feel sort of that presence
- 11:43Speaker 2: of these legends there?
- 11:45Speaker 3: You know there is something about Auburn and like Alabama
- 11:48Speaker 3: fans say that all the time. They think it's cursed
- 11:50Speaker 3: because bad things happen to them every time they have
- 11:52Speaker 3: to play Auburn at Jordenhair Stadium, But I don't know
- 11:56Speaker 3: if so many of the places really have those ghost
- 12:00Speaker 3: I will say something, you know, something is different at
- 12:02Speaker 3: Jordan here, whether it's the crowd, whether it's the way
- 12:05Speaker 3: the energy comes off of the student section.
- 12:08Speaker 1: But I mean I've been to a number of the stadiums.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I would say that one has the most interesting field
- 12:14Speaker 3: to me, But that's just my all right.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Any out of conference, I'm talking like next door got
- 12:21Speaker 2: Duke in North Carolina up the road a little bit.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Do you do you ever get to cover those games
- 12:24Speaker 2: or wish you could cover those games as well? Or
- 12:26Speaker 2: are you pretty limited to the SEC?
- 12:29Speaker 1: I would say I usually stick to the SEC for
- 12:32Speaker 1: the things I'm covering that are in the state, But
- 12:34Speaker 1: if there's a game where Alabama or Auburn is playing
- 12:37Speaker 1: one of those teams in a big event, I mean
- 12:39Speaker 1: I will go out.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I covered Alabama baseball in the what was it Winston Salem?
- 12:49Speaker 3: They played wake Forest a couple of years ago, and
- 12:52Speaker 3: the winner of that one went on to advance to
- 12:55Speaker 3: the College World Series. Wake Forest beat them real bad,
- 12:58Speaker 3: but it was cool to get to see that part
- 13:00Speaker 3: of North Carolina and experience a new stadium. So yeah,
- 13:03Speaker 3: I mean every now and then we get out of
- 13:05Speaker 3: conference for a big event or something that's on the
- 13:07Speaker 3: road to a championship.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Sure, and so maybe you've been Have you been to
- 13:11Speaker 2: Omaha for the College Round Series?
- 13:13Speaker 1: Yet not for softball?
- 13:17Speaker 2: Wait?
- 13:18Speaker 1: No, no, for Omaha? Yes, I have been to. I
- 13:21Speaker 1: thought that's so we're being up Oklahoma.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I have been to Uh yeah, I went Auburn made
- 13:25Speaker 3: it two or three years ago.
- 13:27Speaker 1: And let me tell you that's a wild, wild experience.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Sure. Let me tell you, as a Northern kid, every
- 13:33Speaker 2: Southern game they put on TV, no matter the sport,
- 13:35Speaker 2: always seemed like a wild town. So is it as advertised?
- 13:39Speaker 2: Is it as college towns? He as? Ever, when you
- 13:41Speaker 2: get to these.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Game days, sometimes yes, not always, but there's always a
- 13:47Speaker 3: couple people in the crowd where you're like, all right,
- 13:49Speaker 3: I could see why this might be the one they
- 13:51Speaker 3: feature on TV. This is the guy who's bringing that energy.
- 13:54Speaker 3: He's got you know, a garbage can on fire, and
- 13:57Speaker 3: he's grilling sausages on top of you know, there's always
- 14:00Speaker 3: somebody that fits the description.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Sure, you know you mentioned Saban and obviously he's transition
- 14:06Speaker 2: into the TV world now. So when college game day
- 14:09Speaker 2: comes to town, do you ever to cover that at all?
- 14:12Speaker 3: Or Yeah, so we're able to go down to that,
- 14:15Speaker 3: but usually it's not worth our time to go down
- 14:18Speaker 3: to it because it requires getting to the stadium so
- 14:21Speaker 3: much earlier than she really would and it's not like
- 14:23Speaker 3: we get to interact with what's going on at the set.
- 14:26Speaker 1: We just get to be around it.
- 14:27Speaker 3: So I know that we've had people do it a
- 14:30Speaker 3: couple of times, but I don't think most people are like, yeah,
- 14:33Speaker 3: I can't believe I got to do that. It wasn't
- 14:35Speaker 3: wasn't worth that time.
- 14:37Speaker 2: All right, I gotta give you a little trivia here.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Do you know that I've covered wheelchair basketball over the
- 14:42Speaker 2: last few years and Alabama wheelchair basketball. I believe the
- 14:46Speaker 2: women's side just won the championship. I don't know if
- 14:47Speaker 2: you covered that kind of thing. But these teams are
- 14:50Speaker 2: leaning into the adaptive space as well.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I have not covered that, but I do get tweets
- 14:55Speaker 3: all the time that say how good their adapted team is,
- 14:57Speaker 3: and it always blows my mind that they're like really
- 15:00Speaker 3: top of the top of the game.
- 15:02Speaker 2: So who knows, maybe we'll see a segment on them
- 15:04Speaker 2: on your show. Now I will be possible in that
- 15:07Speaker 2: vein when you do your sports cast, is it strictly
- 15:10Speaker 2: all right? Let me do our game recap? Is it
- 15:12Speaker 2: human interest stories? What? What's what? What can we expect
- 15:14Speaker 2: when to watch you on TV?
- 15:16Speaker 3: I try and get in a mix of everything I can.
- 15:18Speaker 3: You know, obviously there will be times where there it's
- 15:20Speaker 3: just a straight up game recap. But I like to
- 15:23Speaker 3: try and find the stories with the players. You know,
- 15:26Speaker 3: give you a perfect example. We have a minor league
- 15:28Speaker 3: baseball team here, the Rocket City trash Pan Is they're
- 15:31Speaker 3: the Double A affiliate of the Angels.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Sure they have a prospect.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Last year was off to a great start, slid into
- 15:38Speaker 3: second base in a game in May, broke his fibula
- 15:41Speaker 3: and dislocated his ankle.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Out for the season. Comes back this year.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Second game, third game, back hits for the first cycle
- 15:50Speaker 3: in team history. Like you know, Seco talk to him
- 15:53Speaker 3: about his recovery process and what it means, and he
- 15:56Speaker 3: got into how it was really the confidence booth that
- 15:58Speaker 3: he needed, and you know, it was cool stuff kind
- 16:00Speaker 3: of finding out some of the behind the scenes things.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Max. You're fairly youngs. So I feel like you probably
- 16:05Speaker 2: have a synergy with these guys who are still coming up,
- 16:08Speaker 2: right and all that. Do you feel kind of on
- 16:10Speaker 2: that level of you know, hey, we're all coming up
- 16:12Speaker 2: together here.
- 16:13Speaker 1: It does have that feel.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I don't know that they view it the same way,
- 16:16Speaker 3: because some of them feel like, all right, I'm going
- 16:18Speaker 3: to be in the majors next month, so it's.
- 16:22Speaker 1: A little bit different. But I think they see it
- 16:24Speaker 1: that way.
- 16:24Speaker 3: You know, they all know we're all trying to achieve
- 16:26Speaker 3: the same thing, elevate ourselves, get to the next.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Level and make it. But I know that some of
- 16:33Speaker 1: them can do it much more quickly than I can.
- 16:36Speaker 2: All right, let me ask you this because you mentioned
- 16:39Speaker 2: into the majors any draft prospects in Auburn or Alabama
- 16:44Speaker 2: that you could see right now for the NBA following
- 16:46Speaker 2: this final four.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yeah, so for sure Auburn has two. John I Broom
- 16:51Speaker 3: is absolutely one.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Is that Joe is that you Yep, yep, there is.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I can see it, all right, I'm good.
- 17:01Speaker 3: So Auburn's got too, Jenni Broom is won. And then
- 17:03Speaker 3: the other one is this freshman to Hod Pettiford, who
- 17:07Speaker 3: had an unbelievable tournament, didn't have the best game against Florida,
- 17:10Speaker 3: but really had some huge moments.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It's not clear if.
- 17:15Speaker 3: He's going to return to campus, but he doesn't, there's
- 17:18Speaker 3: a good chance he gets drafted.
- 17:20Speaker 1: He's got a lot of potential.
- 17:23Speaker 3: And then on the Alabama side, one of the guys
- 17:25Speaker 3: they'd been talking about is also a freshman's name is
- 17:28Speaker 3: la Baron Pylon. They had him as a lottery pick
- 17:32Speaker 3: early in the season, but he didn't quite produce up
- 17:36Speaker 3: to that level. Now some people are saying he's not
- 17:38Speaker 3: going to get drafted, he'll come back. And then the
- 17:41Speaker 3: other one is Mark Sears, who was unbelievable.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Oh sure, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Not really clear where teams are viewing him.
- 17:49Speaker 3: But he could be a guy that goes into the
- 17:51Speaker 3: NBA and just makes a ton of threes. So we'll
- 17:55Speaker 3: see if somebody takes a shot on him. But the
- 17:59Speaker 3: guy can shoot. I mean, that's it's not up for debate,
- 18:01Speaker 3: all right.
- 18:02Speaker 2: I want to know this. When you were at the
- 18:03Speaker 2: Final four and when you go with the teams, are
- 18:05Speaker 2: you on the team bus or how do you guys
- 18:06Speaker 2: get to that or is there separation there?
- 18:08Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a complete separation.
- 18:10Speaker 3: I think that there might be some actual team affiliated
- 18:13Speaker 3: media that gets to go on the team bus and
- 18:15Speaker 3: the team playing.
- 18:16Speaker 1: But I'm taking my own, you know whatever.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Said that, Did you get a chance to stay after
- 18:22Speaker 2: Auburn lost to watch Cooper flag or no?
- 18:25Speaker 1: I did. I did get to stay.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I watched that game, and then I watched the National
- 18:29Speaker 3: Championship game. I was there on Monday night for all
- 18:31Speaker 3: that madness, and uh yeah, I'm very fortunate to have
- 18:35Speaker 3: been able to stay for that.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Any fans that stand out to you that you've reported on, like,
- 18:39Speaker 2: oh my god, he was your ever game or she
- 18:41Speaker 2: was your ever game, but in any.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Of the sports, you know, I don't.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I didn't really spend too much time talking to fans
- 18:48Speaker 3: at this one, mostly because by the time the Auburn
- 18:51Speaker 3: game rolled around, they were out and all the Auburn
- 18:53Speaker 3: fans were already gone.
- 18:55Speaker 1: But yeah, it was.
- 18:58Speaker 3: It was a wild place, especially because they can sixty
- 19:00Speaker 3: thousand fans in there now run.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I mean, did Auburn football make a bowl this year
- 19:05Speaker 2: or did they not? Because I don't remember if they
- 19:07Speaker 2: did or.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Not they did not this year.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Have you been able to cover a bowl game for
- 19:12Speaker 2: either team though in your in your time.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so not this last year because last year
- 19:18Speaker 3: they played Michigan and they were in Tampa, so we
- 19:21Speaker 3: didn't go to that one. But the year before that,
- 19:24Speaker 3: they played Michigan in the Rose Bowl and I was
- 19:27Speaker 3: there for that and that was absolute insanity.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I mean that game went.
- 19:31Speaker 2: To up by the way, Michigan was not really supposed
- 19:33Speaker 2: to beat Alabama this time around, I'm not.
- 19:36Speaker 3: You're absolutely right they were not, and they did. You know,
- 19:39Speaker 3: they were down a couple man, a couple of starters,
- 19:41Speaker 3: and they still got it done on an ugly and
- 19:43Speaker 3: ugly and wet day in Florida.
- 19:46Speaker 2: So that was not But you were at the Rose Bowl.
- 19:49Speaker 2: But I just heard correctly, Am I right?
- 19:51Speaker 1: That's correct?
- 19:52Speaker 2: That is so cool to say you were at the
- 19:53Speaker 2: Rose Bowl?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Right, It was nuts. That was definitely one of the
- 19:57Speaker 1: cooler experiences I've had.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Now, maybe you know yourself, but media, no matter what town,
- 20:03Speaker 2: whether it's Alabama or New York City, always going to
- 20:05Speaker 2: be tough. Have you seen media be really tough on
- 20:08Speaker 2: the you know, filling the shoes of Nick Saban? I mean,
- 20:11Speaker 2: have you seen that toughness on the coach?
- 20:13Speaker 3: There have been people who have asked questions where you
- 20:16Speaker 3: can tell they're trying to almost be condescending because there's
- 20:21Speaker 3: a difference. But I think most people understand no one's
- 20:24Speaker 3: going to be Nick Saban, and this guy isn't a slouch.
- 20:27Speaker 3: He had Washington in the National Championship Game. He's been
- 20:31Speaker 3: a winner everywhere he's coached, and I think they understand.
- 20:34Speaker 2: And he really brought up Pennick Junior, right, I mean,
- 20:36Speaker 2: that's right there.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Yeah, so I think they understand he might not be
- 20:40Speaker 3: coach Saban, but it doesn't mean he can't win.
- 20:44Speaker 2: And you know what's interesting is I applauded Alabama for
- 20:47Speaker 2: making the ball the first year after Saban. I mean,
- 20:49Speaker 2: they still made a ballgame people, you know, that's kind
- 20:51Speaker 2: of how I saw that.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Yeah, they were on the verge of the college football playoffs.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Had they not gotten absolutely demolished by Oklahoma right at
- 21:00Speaker 3: the end of the season, they would have been in,
- 21:02Speaker 3: you know, over teams like SMU and maybe, I mean,
- 21:06Speaker 3: who knows.
- 21:07Speaker 2: But Oklahoma, Now let's go to them. And also, my
- 21:10Speaker 2: dad's hometown was Oklahoma, by the way, so the home
- 21:12Speaker 2: state with Olhaoma, So of course I follow them a
- 21:15Speaker 2: little closer than normal. But the softball team, did you
- 21:19Speaker 2: get to cover them because you've been on the sec
- 21:21Speaker 2: circuit and I believe it was a forty nine to zero.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Run they had there right, So they were on an
- 21:27Speaker 3: unbelievable run. I mean just insanity, like it was unstoppable.
- 21:32Speaker 3: I don't know how you kind of compete with that,
- 21:34Speaker 3: but yeah, they were unreal. But back to Oklahoma. Oklahoma's quarterback,
- 21:40Speaker 3: the one that beat Alabama, is now at Auburn Jackson.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Arnold and the transfer portal there you go that that's
- 21:47Speaker 2: an example of transfer portal, which in il A a
- 21:50Speaker 2: while ago. But transfer portal is becoming bad for the sport.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I feel like it's becoming too wide ranging here.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I think there need to be restrictions put in place.
- 22:00Speaker 3: It's at a point where you're getting guys going from
- 22:02Speaker 3: one school to the rival school. I mean, perfect example,
- 22:06Speaker 3: Aiden Holloway, who was at Auburn is now at Alabama
- 22:09Speaker 3: on the basketball team. I mean, that just would not
- 22:11Speaker 3: have happened before the transfer portal and nil.
- 22:15Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 22:16Speaker 3: I mean, it's crazy how much turnover there is every year.
- 22:20Speaker 3: It's just insane. It's you almost don't even know how
- 22:22Speaker 3: many teams the guy's going to play for before he
- 22:25Speaker 3: graduates or leaves. It's it's out of hand.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I think, all right, you're a northern guy, right, You've
- 22:31Speaker 2: been born a Pierre, You're a city kid. Did you
- 22:33Speaker 2: have a best interest in Saint John's though, I mean
- 22:36Speaker 2: talk about that. Did you watch it from Afar?
- 22:39Speaker 3: Definitely watched from Afar. Definitely was interested to see what
- 22:42Speaker 3: Patino was going to do. And obviously a program like
- 22:45Speaker 3: that who hadn't really done much in so long, you're
- 22:48Speaker 3: hoping that a guy like that can come in and
- 22:51Speaker 3: put together a winner. So it was awesome to see,
- 22:53Speaker 3: you know, New York City have a team that was really, really,
- 22:57Speaker 3: really good. Unfortunate end, but you know, Patina still got
- 23:00Speaker 3: named Coach of the Year, so he's got a lot
- 23:03Speaker 3: of stuff going for him.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I think they're still going to be good.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Oh my god, I have excitement. You know, I lived
- 23:08Speaker 2: half a mile from Saint John's, so I'm a natural
- 23:10Speaker 2: Saint John's kid. Have you been up to New York though,
- 23:14Speaker 2: because obviously these Southern teams don't come up to New
- 23:16Speaker 2: York as much. But have you been up here to
- 23:18Speaker 2: cover a game?
- 23:21Speaker 3: You know, I haven't. I probably should have. In a
- 23:24Speaker 3: normal year, Alabama played their basketball games in Newark, so
- 23:29Speaker 3: that would have been a good opportunity. We couldn't swing
- 23:32Speaker 3: that grip financially, but in a normal year, I think
- 23:37Speaker 3: I probably would have been up there for that, which
- 23:39Speaker 3: would have been pretty awesome.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And I have it always in Trice's area is always fun,
- 23:43Speaker 2: as you probably.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, all right.
- 23:45Speaker 2: To people watching this and seeing your journey from intern
- 23:48Speaker 2: to now sports catch of the Year in Alabama, what's
- 23:50Speaker 2: your message? How do you have one leg up on
- 23:52Speaker 2: the sports world?
- 23:54Speaker 3: It's a great question. I would say it's just relentless
- 23:57Speaker 3: pursuit of the dream. You know, I've see there's always
- 24:00Speaker 3: going to be obstacles and hurdles that you have to
- 24:02Speaker 3: hop over and get through, but just finding a way
- 24:05Speaker 3: to power through all that and keep your eyes on
- 24:07Speaker 3: the prize. Know that at the end of the day
- 24:10Speaker 3: there are going to be struggles and things that you
- 24:12Speaker 3: have to get past, but everybody else is dealing with
- 24:15Speaker 3: that too. It's just who can get past it the best.
- 24:18Speaker 3: And I think that's what's led me to where I am.
- 24:20Speaker 2: All right, you're you're one of the better journalists on X,
- 24:23Speaker 2: meaning you don't go for like trying to break the
- 24:26Speaker 2: news like Arson Judge or anything like that. No shade
- 24:28Speaker 2: to John Aymon, but you know you're not rushing to
- 24:30Speaker 2: get that breaking news outher you want to be very accurate.
- 24:33Speaker 2: But a social media just put so much pressure on
- 24:37Speaker 2: these journalists and mistakes are made more so than they
- 24:39Speaker 2: should be.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's a fact.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And how do you avoid that and how do you
- 24:44Speaker 2: get your sources and make sure you're well before you
- 24:47Speaker 2: go to Twitter with the news.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I mean, it honestly blows my mind how effective some
- 24:53Speaker 3: of the people are. I mean, you know, you look
- 24:55Speaker 3: at a guy like Jeff Passing or Adam Schefter, like
- 24:57Speaker 3: the gods of sourced information tweeting. I don't know how
- 25:01Speaker 3: they are able to verify their information as quickly as
- 25:04Speaker 3: they are and then get out the tweet correctly. But
- 25:06Speaker 3: even those guys, you'll see we'll have an edited tweet
- 25:09Speaker 3: or a deleted tweet because we're not immune to typos.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It just happens. Obviously, getting the information wrong.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Is different, but the typo it will get you, it'll
- 25:20Speaker 3: get the best of it.
- 25:21Speaker 2: That I think that a Hayman tweet's been screenshotted like
- 25:24Speaker 2: twenty thousand times and splattered all over, especially when the
- 25:27Speaker 2: Giants play the Yanks as they are this weekend.
- 25:29Speaker 1: By the way, nothing beats Arson Judges. That is one
- 25:31Speaker 1: of the best of all time.
- 25:33Speaker 2: That is so true. All right, now, you know you're
- 25:35Speaker 2: about to go live, right, we're talking on a Friday night.
- 25:37Speaker 2: You're about to go live. People in New York that
- 25:39Speaker 2: know you, that are friends with you, family with you.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Do they get to see you? Is there an app
- 25:43Speaker 2: that we can watch wayt bat.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean we have an app and then we
- 25:48Speaker 3: live stream on our website. My grandma is a regular viewer.
- 25:52Speaker 3: I know that my parents watch pretty frequently. I can't
- 25:55Speaker 3: say so much that my friends watch me because I
- 25:56Speaker 3: don't think that they would normally care about what's going
- 25:59Speaker 3: on in the Alabama sports world.
- 26:01Speaker 1: But I know that at least a couple of my
- 26:02Speaker 1: family members are watching.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Well, I love that. And why I came down to
- 26:06Speaker 2: you is because you were there. You were on the
- 26:08Speaker 2: scene in San Antonio. By the way, alim Odome, I
- 26:11Speaker 2: feel like it's a thousand years old, but it didn't
- 26:13Speaker 2: look a day over a year. Right, They look pretty fresh.
- 26:16Speaker 3: They did some great work with that court and getting
- 26:19Speaker 3: that building ready for the event. You know, if you
- 26:21Speaker 3: could have seen some of the concourses, I think you
- 26:24Speaker 3: would acknowledge that it was thirty years old. But they
- 26:27Speaker 3: did a pretty great job of getting it ready for TV.
- 26:30Speaker 2: All Right, so you're covering Auburn, Alabama any baseball storylines
- 26:33Speaker 2: because we have a baseball audience too that you can
- 26:35Speaker 2: tell us right.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Now baseball storyline, I mean, the baseball that I'm focused
- 26:41Speaker 3: on right now is all Rocket City trash pandis a
- 26:43Speaker 3: double A for the Angels. You know, there's a bunch
- 26:46Speaker 3: of guys on the Angels right now that I covered
- 26:49Speaker 3: while they were here. Logan o'hoppi, who.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Is Oh my god, key star right, it's the catcher.
- 26:55Speaker 3: He's he he was here for a little bit after
- 27:00Speaker 3: they traded with the Phillies for him. And then Kiren
- 27:03Speaker 3: Parris who's been raking to start this season. I covered
- 27:06Speaker 3: him when he was down here.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Well there was I that just got his first major
- 27:10Speaker 2: league hit the other day, I believe for the Angels.
- 27:12Speaker 2: So you know, all these guys are producing right now.
- 27:15Speaker 2: So it's it's it's funny, you know for the Angels
- 27:18Speaker 2: and especially for Mike Trout. I want to see him
- 27:20Speaker 2: around a good team. I feel very sad for him
- 27:22Speaker 2: when he's have to deal with the last few years.
- 27:25Speaker 1: It is crazy what he's had to deal with.
- 27:27Speaker 3: But you just got to keep your fingers crossed that
- 27:29Speaker 3: at some point the talent that they have in the
- 27:32Speaker 3: farm system reaches the potential and they get back to
- 27:35Speaker 3: the playoffs.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Have there any been any rehab sightings of Trout during
- 27:39Speaker 2: your time, I mean, obviously was up and down all around,
- 27:42Speaker 2: so I wish.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Unfortunately, Triple A for Salt Lake City is much closer
- 27:47Speaker 3: than Huntsville, Alabama, so they're going to send him there.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Now you mentioned Alabama, I believe there's a historic Necro
- 27:56Speaker 2: League stadium as well around there, am I right?
- 27:58Speaker 1: That is right.
- 27:59Speaker 3: You're talking about rick Wood Field where they had the
- 28:01Speaker 3: Classic last year.
- 28:02Speaker 2: And were you part of that? You get to cover
- 28:04Speaker 2: those things too.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Or I was. I was down there for that.
- 28:07Speaker 3: That was pretty awesome to get to see, you know,
- 28:08Speaker 3: Kangraffe Junior walking around.
- 28:10Speaker 1: You're there with all the national media. It was it
- 28:13Speaker 1: was awesome.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Well that's very cool. Well, Max, I love having you on.
- 28:17Speaker 2: We got to have you back on as things move
- 28:19Speaker 2: forward here in the spring, sports things and and and
- 28:22Speaker 2: your career as well. Keep in touch with us, let
- 28:25Speaker 2: us know what you're up to. And Congratsgate on winning
- 28:27Speaker 2: Sportscaster of the Year.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Alex.
- 28:30Speaker 2: I really appreciate you having who gave me the award,
- 28:31Speaker 2: just so I know, because I don't know if I was.
- 28:33Speaker 1: You know, I'll show it to you. I have it here.
- 28:35Speaker 1: It's from the Alabama Broadcasters.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Look at that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I still haven't wrapped up.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Congratulations. Wow. Yeah, And obviously you're not going to rest
- 28:51Speaker 2: on that. So what's next for you? Like, what's on
- 28:52Speaker 2: the agenda and how do you keep growing from.
- 28:55Speaker 1: This next I'd love to get an Emmy and Amy
- 28:59Speaker 1: would be all I've been nominating before, but I have
- 29:05Speaker 1: yet to win.
- 29:06Speaker 3: So that's that's next on my agenda. We'll see what
- 29:10Speaker 3: it takes to get there.
- 29:11Speaker 2: But that would we cover adaptive sports. There you go,
