- 0:33Hypnotist. Welcome to the Hypnotist and
- 0:42today I am joined by a very special guest hypnotist, Lenora
- 0:46Edwards. Welcome to the show.
- 0:47Thank you so much. I'm so excited I get to spend
- 0:50time with you and your listeners.
- 0:53Yeah, great to have you here. And it's always good bumping
- 0:56into hypnotherapist because there's always an interesting
- 0:59story as to how people get into this wonderful world called
- 1:02hypnosis. So what's your story?
- 1:04How did you end up being a hypnotherapist?
- 1:07That is so funny that you mentioned that.
- 1:10I'm so at the Mid America conference coming up in October.
- 1:14I am sharing the keynote all about how I got into hypnosis,
- 1:19and the title of it is somewhere between Crisis and Cookies and
- 1:24the way that I got into hypnosis.
- 1:25And I feel like everybody gets into hypnosis this way.
- 1:28Nobody really sets out from like kindergarten, I want to be an
- 1:32astronaut or a firefighter. I want to do this, I want to do
- 1:34that. Nobody sets down to be a
- 1:36hypnotist or a hypnotherapist. And the way that I came through
- 1:41was through cookies. I had a baking business at the
- 1:45time, in addition to my career as a speech pathologist.
- 1:49And what I was doing was spending a whole lot of time on
- 1:53YouTube. And I was looking for ways to
- 1:57help myself ultimately stop sabotaging myself, finding ways
- 2:01to make money, finding millionaire mindset type things.
- 2:06And then also what was really underneath was I had an eating
- 2:10disorder and I was finding ways to navigate around that.
- 2:14And I did not tell anyone. And I have been struggling with
- 2:17it for over 2 decades. And it just got progressively
- 2:21worse and worse. And that's how I ended up
- 2:23finding the wonderful world of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
- 2:29So talk me through that because obviously there's there's so
- 2:32much information on YouTube, so much information online.
- 2:35Oh my God. How did you figure out?
- 2:37Like was it you were a Guinea pig and you tested what worked
- 2:40for you? Or is it a case of something you
- 2:43discovered something and it really resonated and you're
- 2:45like, Oh yeah, that's going to help?
- 2:47Oh my gosh, that is such a great question.
- 2:50There's so much on YouTube. I have spent more hours on
- 2:54YouTube. And if there was a doctoral
- 2:57degree in personal growth and development, I would have
- 2:59absolutely earned it by now. Because ultimately, when it
- 3:03comes to personal growth, I think there are so many things
- 3:07that help. And it's about finding what
- 3:09works for you. And when it comes to hypnosis or
- 3:13finding ways to change habits that we don't like, whether we
- 3:17want to stick to a diet or we want to wake up early or we want
- 3:21to stop criticizing ourselves, there is so many options.
- 3:25And when it comes to hypnosis, I broke definitely all of the
- 3:30warnings that they said don't throw the biggest problem at
- 3:34this right now. Work with somebody one-on-one to
- 3:37really help anchor in the things that the changes are occurring.
- 3:41And I took all of those rules and recommendations and I tossed
- 3:45them right out the window. I was like, I can figure it out.
- 3:48And in doing so, I definitely turned myself into the Guinea
- 3:51pig. And I also found that the very
- 3:54hard way that working with a professional is a very, very
- 3:59helpful approach, especially because they often say you can't
- 4:02be the driver and the passenger at the same time.
- 4:04So when you're learning something new, the beauty with
- 4:08YouTube is that there's so much information.
- 4:11The flaw is that you're not having a conversation with
- 4:14somebody about the things that you're learning.
- 4:17So it's very passive and you're trying to make sense of it on
- 4:19your own. Whereas when you get to have a
- 4:22conversation, whether it's in a group class or if you're working
- 4:25with a practitioner, there's a conversation, there's a back and
- 4:28forth, and that's the difference that makes all the difference.
- 4:33It's, it's definitely the, the metaphor I use is, is kind of is
- 4:37hypnotherapist where we're seeing the client in the maze
- 4:40that they're in, but from a different perspective.
- 4:41We get to see it from above. So we might have experienced
- 4:44something similar or worked with other clients to have something
- 4:47similar. So we get to kind of see it from
- 4:49a different perspective. And, and I think that's helpful
- 4:51because, you know, if you're in the maze like you, you might
- 4:55have the right information, but you don't know where to, to
- 4:57turn, you know, in, in terms of that.
- 4:59And how did that looking for stuff online transition for you
- 5:04actually becoming a therapist and and and A and a speaker and
- 5:07an author? I I completely agree with you
- 5:10about working with a practitioner or coach or a
- 5:13hypnotherapist. They have a different
- 5:15perspective and they're looking at you in the maze.
- 5:17That is a beautiful, beautiful analogy and picture that you
- 5:21brought up. Yeah, can't agree more with
- 5:25that, especially because we don't know what we don't know.
- 5:27And we're trying to figure out if it's working while you're in
- 5:30the maze. And when you're with a
- 5:32practitioner or a therapist or a hypnotherapist.
- 5:35Excuse me? They have an embodied
- 5:38perspective. They understand the lingo.
- 5:40They've already walked through that maze working to figure it
- 5:43out, so they know a bit more. So they can absolutely help.
- 5:47When for, for me, I always think I took a very backwards way into
- 5:53it. I really, really worked hard at
- 5:55trying to help myself and get myself out of those loops.
- 5:58And I would take two steps forward and three steps back, or
- 6:01I'd have a good week and then I'd have a bad three weeks or
- 6:03something like that. When it came to my eating
- 6:06habits, when it came to exercising, when it came to the
- 6:10terrible word of a diet and what that looks like.
- 6:13And it really was trying to figure it out on my own.
- 6:16And what happened as a result of my eating disorder, I ended up
- 6:20back in the dentist chair for another false tooth.
- 6:24So I have multiple false teeth and that happens as a result of
- 6:28an eating disorder. And when I was sitting in the
- 6:32dentist chair, I kept thinking, this isn't working.
- 6:35You're you, you have gone as far as you can.
- 6:38I don't know how many more dollars do you want to spend?
- 6:41How many more hours do you want to spend trying to do this by
- 6:45yourself? And then it came to how many
- 6:47more teeth do you need to lose to realize that you're not able
- 6:50to do this alone. And as horrible as a David that
- 6:56was, I started to take a step forward.
- 7:00And my intention was to never, ever tell anybody about the fact
- 7:06that I had an eating disorder because there's so much shame
- 7:08and there's so much guilt wrapped up into it.
- 7:11And for me, I said, OK, let me take a class.
- 7:17And one of my favorite practitioners at the time was
- 7:20they were based on the West Coast and they were actually
- 7:22coming over to the East Coast. And I was so excited because I
- 7:26live on the East Coast and they were coming to a state that was
- 7:29only 5 hours away at the time. And I thought, I can totally
- 7:34write this off as like speech therapy.
- 7:36This could be CE us people won't even know about it.
- 7:40And then COVID happened and I didn't get to actually go to the
- 7:45conference, but thankfully Zoom was there to save the day.
- 7:48And they had started to do hybrids and they had started to
- 7:52host conferences where people who had already signed up
- 7:55because I had signed up in January and they locked
- 7:57everything down in March. And the conference eventually
- 8:00occurred in November. So I was able to attend on Zoom.
- 8:03And after the five day conference on Zoom working very
- 8:07hard to figure things out, I realized, unfortunately, I still
- 8:13had a ton of problems. The conference didn't resolve
- 8:18what I had initially thought that I was going to resolve the
- 8:21the skills that I thought were going to be at the end of this
- 8:24five day conference. And in the last 20 minutes of
- 8:28that conference, the hypnotherapist and the teachers
- 8:32goes. If you still want more help with
- 8:34this, reach out to our clinic. We offer one to one sessions.
- 8:38And I decided to call and leave a message and I started to work
- 8:41with a practitioner at the time who is not the one that I
- 8:44initially thought with thought it was, but I worked with their
- 8:47protege and it was the greatest gift that I ever experienced.
- 8:52And then so we started to work together.
- 8:56We started to work together about two to 3 * 4 * a month for
- 9:01about two sessions at a pop and I still did not tell this
- 9:06practitioner as to why I was there.
- 9:08And we talked about things like confidence and how to stand up
- 9:12for myself and what I would consider very surface level
- 9:17topics. And then after four months of
- 9:22meeting, I said something off the cuff and they caught it and,
- 9:27and I tried to navigate my way around it and they caught it
- 9:30again. And I kept working to get away
- 9:32from the topic and they kept coming back and they would not
- 9:35move. And finally just a cluster pile
- 9:39came out of me of everything that I have been going through.
- 9:44And at the end of that session, things were completely different
- 9:48because we had such rapport. We had so many other things that
- 9:52had been worked on up until that point.
- 9:55At the end of that session, I felt it completely leave my
- 10:00body, this thing that had been bothering me and irritating me
- 10:02for so long. And it became very apparent that
- 10:05it was like, you need to do this with your life, Lenora.
- 10:08And so I had completely pivoted from that standpoint after that
- 10:11session and. I think, I think it's a
- 10:15wonderful thing because a lot of hypnotherapists, either through
- 10:18self hypnosis or finding a good practitioner, they, they on the
- 10:22receiving end of just that complete transformation.
- 10:25They feel they've released so much of what they need to
- 10:28release. And then it almost feels like a
- 10:31desire in, in certain people to like, I want to share this with
- 10:35other people. I want to I want to help other
- 10:36people in this way. Completely.
- 10:38I I personally think, and I feel like you probably would agree
- 10:40with me, that it's the greatest gift that you can share with
- 10:44somebody. Yeah, because effectively at its
- 10:47core, hypnotherapy and any kind of therapy, but I think
- 10:50hypnotherapy is more on the therapeutic spectrum of the
- 10:53actual change element rather than just kind of counselling
- 10:56and listening. It's it's more designed to
- 10:58create a change is that effectively you're taking
- 11:01someone's life that's on a current trajectory and by an
- 11:05intervention over several sessions, it then takes a
- 11:08different trajectory. And and that's what an
- 11:11incredible thing to be able to do for other people and, and it
- 11:13feels amazing and, and fulfilling as well.
- 11:16So. So how did that go then from you
- 11:19on the receiving end of this to you then saying, no, I'm going
- 11:22to help other people in this way?
- 11:23Did you kind of do a course? You, you, you kind of learnt
- 11:28about it or you just drove straight in and, and thought,
- 11:31I'm going to be this therapist? Well, I have been learning the
- 11:34entire time up from that standpoint and especially when
- 11:37it gets into anything in the world of Do you remember the
- 11:41movie The Secret? OK.
- 11:45So anything in the world of love, attraction or personal
- 11:48growth, I like to affectionately refer to the movie The Secret as
- 11:52the infomercial to personal growth because it comes across
- 11:56as very sparkly and just visualize and you're going to be
- 11:59set on your way. But when we start to really
- 12:02notice that change is possible and that we are the creator of
- 12:06our experience, we are the meaning maker of our experience.
- 12:09We're the one in the trance. We're the one experiencing life
- 12:12in this human form. You start to really get down to
- 12:17the foundation and have a much deeper understanding.
- 12:20And I think there's a lot of different levels that go into
- 12:24it. And I very much think from the
- 12:27standpoint of being able to understand the multiple layers
- 12:30that are going on, I tend to be, and you probably are also that
- 12:34type of person. And most of your listeners, if
- 12:36not all of your listeners, have a deeper understanding of this
- 12:41place that we call Earth and this world of that we get to be
- 12:44creator. Where we are on that level
- 12:48varies. And so helping people understand
- 12:50that change is possible no matter what they want.
- 12:54If they want to stop being critical inside their head or if
- 12:57they want to go out and start a business that is possible and
- 13:01helping them identify those characteristics of these are the
- 13:05thoughts that are holding me back from accomplishing that
- 13:09thinking I'm not that type of person to do that.
- 13:12And helping them navigate out of that thought process into I am
- 13:17the type of person I can be, the type of person, sure, I could
- 13:20take one step forward truly changes their entire life
- 13:24because they're thinking in a different way.
- 13:26And now they're not looking at a problem.
- 13:28They're looking at a way to navigate around the problem.
- 13:32And that is extraordinarily powerful.
- 13:36Yeah, it is. It's it's it's a wonderful thing
- 13:38to. I feel privileged to be a
- 13:40therapist and kind of help other people because you, you know,
- 13:43you're helping other people, but it's also kind of like you could
- 13:46see insights in the clients that you're working with within your
- 13:48own life and, and it feels kind of quite generative and, and
- 13:51helpful from that perspective. Most hypnotherapist gravitate
- 13:56towards either a niche or a specialism.
- 14:00Did your background with, you know, having your eating
- 14:03disorder and, and and some of the things related to that
- 14:06influence that the niche that you tend to specialize in?
- 14:10Very much so. And you had asked how did how
- 14:13did I decide to become a coach and what was that trajectory
- 14:16like? I had been studying all along.
- 14:18And I would think as I was watching things on YouTube, I'm
- 14:21like, I want to help people. I want to give them that change.
- 14:24I want to do that. And I just didn't know how to do
- 14:27it. So when I noticed I need to do
- 14:30this with my life, oh, OK. So then things start to light
- 14:35up. So I did take certifications and
- 14:37I did take different courses. And it's one thing to take a
- 14:41course. And one of the techniques that
- 14:42I'm certified in is what is called holographic memory
- 14:46resolution. And it helps people speak in the
- 14:49language of their nervous system.
- 14:51So the nervous system speaks in color, shapes, sizes, textures
- 14:54and sounds. And when we understand that
- 14:56code, we can really help people because they'll say, oh, I have
- 14:59that sinking feeling kind of my stomach.
- 15:02Oh, it makes me think of this time.
- 15:03And so we start to get those changes.
- 15:05We can understand that. We can take a class and say, oh,
- 15:09OK, I understand that. But to embody that is completely
- 15:14different to truly understand the mechanics of what's going on
- 15:18because you can get a certification at the end of five
- 15:20days. Now we want to live it.
- 15:23We want to be a have it truly be a part of us and identify as
- 15:27that and in the intent to help other people.
- 15:33That was a transformation. So I started to practice with at
- 15:38the time when I would consider early, early stages of hypnosis
- 15:42where you start to think, oh, let me practice with my friends
- 15:45or let me let me get used to it. You're actually going through an
- 15:48identity shift of navigating from this person who doesn't
- 15:52feel very comfortable in it to embodying this confidence of
- 15:55saying, oh, I can do this. Oh, this is what it looks like.
- 15:58This is what it looks like for this person, and this is what it
- 16:00looks like for me as I'm going through the process.
- 16:03So it really is a full evolution of the person that's wanting to
- 16:09become that hypnotherapist or the person that's wanting to
- 16:11become that coach or that practitioner, whatever it might
- 16:14be. And you're helping people get
- 16:16changed, which is great when it came to my niche, because I went
- 16:21through what I went through, it was I, I often say, you know,
- 16:28you don't know how many rock bottoms there are and you think
- 16:30you hit rock bottom. And then it turns out there's
- 16:32another 20 levels beneath that really awful place that you were
- 16:36in. And my intention is for other
- 16:40people to realize they don't have to live there.
- 16:44It's not a life sentence. You're stuck in a pattern and we
- 16:48can absolutely help you out of that pattern or those patterns
- 16:52depending on how they are. And when it comes to food, it
- 16:55really is connected with so many things in your life.
- 16:59It's connected to birthday parties, it's connected to being
- 17:02alone, it's connected to pleasure.
- 17:04It's connected to so many things.
- 17:06So to have a really good relationship with food and to
- 17:09have a good relationship with your body changes your life
- 17:12entirely from somebody, somebody who would think about food and
- 17:15think about her body easily 90 plus percent of the day.
- 17:21That's a lot of brain power that was consumed by thoughts that
- 17:26really weren't helping anyone, that weren't really weren't
- 17:30really living in your body. So when you look out into this
- 17:33world and you think, you know, I can do so many things, there are
- 17:36a number of thoughts that are on repeat.
- 17:38Which ones don't I want to keep? And working with somebody to
- 17:42help get that change is truly life altering.
- 17:46And I often think when it comes to people who are saying, OK, I
- 17:52want change and they look out and they say, OK, well, where's
- 17:54a where's a hypnotherapist or where's a coach?
- 17:56Where's a practitioner? I consider it a lot like dating.
- 18:01You didn't go out with somebody the first time and think, OK,
- 18:04And I'm often married necessarily.
- 18:06Most people want to see if there's a connection, want to
- 18:10see if there's a report. Can I trust this person?
- 18:13And I encourage people, especially if they say therapy
- 18:15don't work for me or coaching didn't work for me.
- 18:18That's OK. It might not have been that
- 18:20approach. It might have been the person.
- 18:23So keep looking for a person that resonates with you because
- 18:27your life will be so completely different when you find that
- 18:30person. And that's the great thing
- 18:33because so many coaches, hypnotherapists out there that
- 18:37people get a feeling, I think. And that's why I quite like
- 18:41sharing stuff on kind of Spotify and YouTube and that kind of
- 18:43stuff. Because most of my clients,
- 18:45they've already listened to me hours and hours before they end
- 18:48up working with me because they say feel comfortable, you know,
- 18:52feel like I can trust that mean. And that's the element.
- 18:55And I think we're living in a different time.
- 18:57Whereas go back 20 years, you want to find a therapist or a
- 19:00coach might be a directory and you don't know who they are, you
- 19:04don't know anything about them. And then you're, you know, it
- 19:06feels daunting, I think to kind of take on that risk.
- 19:09But it's never been easier. And I imagine a lot of people
- 19:12that find out about you perhaps have seen you doing your, your
- 19:17TE DX talks. Does that help them to get a
- 19:20feeling of what you're like and whether or not you're suitable
- 19:24for them just from your presence, let's say online?
- 19:28I like to think so. I don't know for sure.
- 19:31I imagine that they they do. People will sometimes say, oh, I
- 19:34saw you online and I liked what you shared.
- 19:37I often think that it is not necessarily what I share, but
- 19:43how I share because a lot of people, especially after I teach
- 19:47a class, they'll come up to me because they can feel the warmth
- 19:52in a, in a real. Sometimes it's not you.
- 19:56You can't really get into that space where you're talking about
- 20:00certain more personal things that you might be talking about
- 20:04when you're in a class or that you might be talking about any
- 20:06YouTube video, Especially when you're in a class and you have
- 20:10the ability to hear that person go into their stories and how
- 20:14they help that person. People relate completely
- 20:17differently. And what I think is such a
- 20:20beautiful thing is. For me, very specifically, there
- 20:24is no judgement and there is no shame.
- 20:27And I can say that to somebody, but they have to feel it.
- 20:31And that's a different experience when you feel that
- 20:35viscerally. And I think that's why after
- 20:37classes, people really come up to me and that's where a lot of
- 20:41my clients come from. Or if I worked with a client and
- 20:45they pass my name along, that's a different story because now
- 20:49they're they're taking this trusted person and this trusted
- 20:52person is passing along my name. Wow, that's a huge compliment.
- 20:57And what a beautiful gift. And they can verify that this
- 21:01person that when you share these very personal things with them,
- 21:05it's OK. And it makes all the difference.
- 21:09The topics that I talked about, especially when it comes to food
- 21:11or somebody's body or how they feel when somebody's touching
- 21:15them, it is personal and it is personable.
- 21:20And you want to be in a space where it's OK to talk about it.
- 21:25And that person's not going to judge you.
- 21:27That person's not going to shame you.
- 21:28They're not going to criticize you.
- 21:30They're going to see you and they aren't going to say it's
- 21:33OK. It's it's I'm looking at it with
- 21:35you and you're safe. Huge.
- 21:38Huge. Therapist fall into a trap of a
- 21:42false belief system that if they're if they're a therapist
- 21:45or if they're a coach, they have to be this kind of shining
- 21:48perfect example and they've got no flaws.
- 21:51And actually that makes it feel less real, less genuine, less
- 21:56authentic, less vulnerable. And I've noticed with you is
- 21:59that you embrace the vulnerability, you, you embrace
- 22:02the kind of the opening and, and kind of the, the sharing.
- 22:06Is that a deliberate thing to kind of to be open?
- 22:10Is that intentional or is that just kind of like a reflection
- 22:12of of your personality? For me, I think it's a
- 22:16reflection of my personality, especially because there are
- 22:19things that I had never wanted to share with people.
- 22:22I didn't anticipate standing on a stage.
- 22:24And quite honestly with you, ask anybody I went to Graduate
- 22:27School with, they would say Lenora's a speaker.
- 22:30She was terrible in class. She hated being up there because
- 22:34I really was so uncomfortable. But I want people to know, and
- 22:39the reason that I share the way that I do is AI want people to
- 22:42know that change is possible and that I get it.
- 22:46I've walked. I know the discomfort in your
- 22:51nervous system and what that looks like.
- 22:54And really, I just want people to feel better.
- 22:58I want them to get the changes they want.
- 23:00If it's with me, great. If not, awesome.
- 23:03Find somebody who works best with you and with your nervous
- 23:10system. And also when we share,
- 23:14especially when we share vulnerably, it's something that
- 23:18we, when when we're doing it, we need to be able to hold the
- 23:23space for ourselves that says, I'm going to share this really
- 23:27that, that this very personal thing about me and I'm going to
- 23:31be OK that I'm not having an internal collapse going.
- 23:36What are they going to think of me?
- 23:36What are they going to judge me? Because I used to absolutely all
- 23:41the times that I've worked with coaches and all the times that
- 23:43I've worked with practitioners and I still do.
- 23:46I usually have at least one or two on my roster because I like
- 23:50to improve and I like to keep getting better at whatever it is
- 23:53that I'm getting better at. So when I'm sharing, for
- 23:58example, I was, I had a TEDx coach and she was such a she was
- 24:01such a beautiful teacher. And sadly she's no longer with
- 24:04us. And her name is, her name was
- 24:06Holly. And when she was first sharing
- 24:10with me how to stand on the TEDx stage, how to say what I'm going
- 24:14to say, she was the one that was saying you need to be able to
- 24:18say this and not break when you're saying it.
- 24:23You have to have that stability for yourself.
- 24:25And that was such a huge realization because I was the
- 24:29one that was judging me. I was the one that was
- 24:32criticizing me. Nobody out there was throwing
- 24:34fruit at me. Nobody was throwing tomatoes,
- 24:36saying get off the stage. I was doing it.
- 24:39And when I can recognize they're not judging me, I'm judging me,
- 24:43OK? That's my personal work.
- 24:44That's something I have to go clean up.
- 24:47Huge difference in the world. I think a lot of people do that.
- 24:51They, they kind of mind read and kind of assume the judgment of
- 24:56an audience will be a certain way.
- 24:58And there's that kind of fear and and kind of reaction.
- 25:02But you've obviously, you know, you speak a lot of the
- 25:04conferences, you've got the keynotes at the Mid America
- 25:07conference, you've done 2 TE DX talks.
- 25:10What would you say is the advice you would give to someone that
- 25:13feels anxious or daunted at the idea of speaking in front of an
- 25:17audience? The first thing that I wish I
- 25:22had understood at the thought of it, because the thought of it
- 25:25used to make me break out into a sweat, but it really is.
- 25:30Focus in on yourself and notice what your subconscious is
- 25:34saying. What are they going to think of
- 25:36me? What are they?
- 25:36What if they're going to judge me?
- 25:37What if I say the wrong thing? What if I mess up?
- 25:39What if they think I'm stupid? All of those worries are exactly
- 25:44where you want to go first, because if you feel like you
- 25:48have this really important thing that you want to share and you
- 25:51want other people to know it and you feel it moving through you
- 25:55and then you go, but what if they're going to think of me?
- 25:57What if? What if they say this?
- 25:59What if they say that you have this beautiful thing to share.
- 26:02That's great. So important.
- 26:06Now do the inside work on this piece so that when you share,
- 26:12you can stand there and go. It doesn't matter what you
- 26:14think. I know for sure that this is
- 26:16helpful. I know that this is going to
- 26:18help somebody. That's where that alignment is.
- 26:22So what's using your your kind of anxieties, worries, thoughts
- 26:26as reconnaissance to kind of say it's telling you exactly what
- 26:29you need to work on? You work on that and then the
- 26:32emotion changes, which seems obvious, but at the same time,
- 26:36most people will bury that or, or kind of ignore it and, and
- 26:41still feel that anyway. Yeah, that's that's really
- 26:46interesting. And when you have those kind of
- 26:47thoughts, did when you did the work on yourself, you know, what
- 26:51if I mess up, what if they judge me?
- 26:52Did you actually kind of forensically go through each one
- 26:55of those and and say, yeah, what if they do judge me?
- 26:58Like what if I do mess up? Do you almost kind of refute
- 27:01them and and kind of lean into them?
- 27:03Very much so. And and I still do as I'm still
- 27:06doing the work. Absolutely.
- 27:07And it's so funny because every speech or every upcoming event,
- 27:12it pushes me in a different way, in a different level.
- 27:15I really struggled with what if they think I'm stupid?
- 27:19That was something that I really had to work with for a very long
- 27:24time. And there will still be little
- 27:25things that pop up and go, well, what if you don't remember it?
- 27:28And then they think you're stupid.
- 27:29It's like, OK, now I need to sit down and I have to have this
- 27:32conversation with this worry or with this part because I love to
- 27:37think of them as messengers. And if I'm finding a way to no
- 27:42get away, Nope, I'm trying to ignore it.
- 27:45That's another big sign that Lenore, you need to pay
- 27:47attention because you're working really hard to not not pay
- 27:50attention to this. So I absolutely still do the
- 27:53work. And even in coming into this
- 27:55keynote, it pushed me in a new way because I had a full, full
- 28:01rundown of what I thought I was going to talk about.
- 28:04And I shared it with one of my coaches.
- 28:06And they go, that's good. But you're missing half the
- 28:10crowd in this because this is directed toward a very specific
- 28:14group, because it was directed toward the newbies.
- 28:16And so I had then had to dismantle that entire talk.
- 28:20I had to pretty much take a huge, what, 80 plus percent of
- 28:24it and throw it out the window or at least put it on the side
- 28:27and restart again. And now it's not then, OK, who
- 28:31do you become on the walk to preparing for this?
- 28:35That is absolutely something that I work with.
- 28:38And so when it comes up and not if, because they, they often
- 28:41come up, those worries or fears, if or when they come up, I like
- 28:46to sit down with them and say, OK, what's going on?
- 28:49Who's talking? If you could all come together
- 28:51and give me an age and give me an idea of who's talking.
- 28:56Let's look at it. Because this, and this is
- 28:58something that I will, I'll teach really quickly.
- 29:01I'll teach you what I affectionately refer to as the
- 29:03shift protocol, and all of my protocols are right there on
- 29:07your hand because I ultimately think you want to gain back your
- 29:10power and your control. So shift as an SHIFT.
- 29:15So the first thing that I do is I spot the thought.
- 29:18So if it's a worry, OK, cool. I, I can I spotted it hear it.
- 29:25Who's voice is it? And this is so, so, so powerful
- 29:30because we want to know, is it our voice or is it an echo of
- 29:35somebody else's voice? Then what we want to do is we
- 29:39want to investigate it. So if it's my voice, OK, cool,
- 29:42let's put this worry out on the table and get it out in front of
- 29:45me. Because when I can get out in
- 29:47front of me, then I have perspective.
- 29:49Then I have the ability, like you said earlier about the
- 29:52matrix. OK, now I can look at it and
- 29:53have a better view of it and I frame it.
- 29:57Is there anybody that might come in and talk to me in a different
- 30:02way? Who else might either agree with
- 30:04this or who might not agree with this, who might not agree with
- 30:07this thought? Great, we're going to frame it
- 30:09and then we're going to trade it in for a better thought.
- 30:12And that is the shift protocol because, and this is something
- 30:15that I teach all my clients and I teach it in all my classes
- 30:17because it's something that I needed.
- 30:19And I couldn't figure out how to capture those thoughts and work
- 30:23them fast enough. But until I, once I created the
- 30:26protocol, I'm like, oh, now we have a systemized approach to
- 30:30those, you know, annoying thoughts or critical thoughts or
- 30:32whatever they are. And now we can shift them in
- 30:35real time, which makes a huge difference because it's not this
- 30:39worry that's going to hold me down for three days.
- 30:42It's this worry that pops up and I get to go, oh, OK, let me look
- 30:45at it. Really quick SHIFT.
- 30:48OK, now we have that emotional release and now we can carry on.
- 30:53So I imagine because there's an element of a mnemonic there,
- 30:56it's on, it's on your hands, you know, you can kind of like I, I
- 30:59imagine also it becomes like a pattern interrupt as well.
- 31:02There we go, the shift, the shift protocol send it.
- 31:05To you so you can put it in the show notes.
- 31:07Yeah, I'll, I'll have a link to that.
- 31:10But I imagine even just like moving your finger for you has
- 31:13become a positive anchor to get access resource states because
- 31:17you already know that you can take an intrusive thought or a
- 31:20worrisome thought and kind of shift that to something more
- 31:23empowering, useful. And I love the bit trading it in
- 31:27is effective. That's, that's a reframe.
- 31:28It's kind of like, well, it's saying this and it has this
- 31:30intention, but actually we could update that for something much
- 31:33more empowering, much more useful.
- 31:35And then you're left with that kind of resourceful feeling.
- 31:38So that's that's great. I'm going to, I'm going to
- 31:40definitely use that. It's a it's a very cool thing.
- 31:42So talk to us about you're at the Mid America conference.
- 31:46You're doing one of the key among some amazing like my my
- 31:51kind of inspiration of becoming a hypnotherapist was Richard
- 31:53Bandler. And I just think he's he does
- 31:55like amazing kind of like nested loops and that kind of
- 31:58storytelling. So it's going to be great to to
- 31:59kind of see him there. Tell us about your your talk at
- 32:04at the Mid America Conference. The way that I approached it was
- 32:08and, and I love that he was one of your first teachers.
- 32:11That's awesome. And I'm super excited because I
- 32:13get to see you when we when we go in a couple of days.
- 32:16For my talk, I really thought about the audience, who's
- 32:22listening, who's in the room? And when they walk away, how do
- 32:27they want, how do they want to walk away?
- 32:29What do they want to feel? Because we can tell so many
- 32:32stories. We can tell uplifting stories.
- 32:34We can tell heavy stories and they walk away with deeper
- 32:37insights. But we can also add humor.
- 32:40And I'm speaking on Friday morning.
- 32:43So the the setup is right now Rich Guzzi is speaking who you
- 32:46got to spend time with last week, which is awesome.
- 32:49That podcast recording is fantastic.
- 32:51So in case anybody wants to go back, it was just a few days
- 32:53ago. And then I believe I'm speaking
- 32:57that morning, on Friday morning. And then Chase Hughes is
- 33:00speaking on Sunday, along with Doctor Richard Bandler is also
- 33:03speaking on Sunday. So I really thought about the
- 33:06timing also. The timing is probably around
- 33:1011:00 AM. And how does somebody feel first
- 33:14thing in the morning? But also where do we want them
- 33:16to be moving at the beginning of a conference?
- 33:20You want them to be uplifted. You want them to be inspired and
- 33:23motivated. So I really paid attention to
- 33:27who's in the room, how do they want to feel, and how can I
- 33:30connect everybody together so that it feels like a family that
- 33:36you want to be a part of. And there are sometimes the
- 33:40reason I specify is because there are plenty of people where
- 33:42they, we'll say, oh, family. And they're like, I didn't have
- 33:45a very good family experience. But no, this is the one that you
- 33:47want to be a part of because we all speak the same language.
- 33:49We're all there for the same reasons.
- 33:51We all love not just learning and growing and helping other
- 33:54people. We also love helping ourselves
- 33:57to a new level and to an expanded level.
- 33:59And I think that's really important.
- 34:02So that's how I started to connect to everybody.
- 34:04And I also wanted to share a little bit about how I got into
- 34:09this great, wonderful field that we find ourselves in.
- 34:14Amazing. So you're going to be sharing
- 34:15your story and and yeah, I guess setting the scene in in a way
- 34:20because you're you and Rich are kind of the 1st and I guess
- 34:24Chase and Richard will be kind of the bookend of the of the of
- 34:28the conference. And yeah, I think it's.
- 34:30A really great way that they had it set up too, which is it's
- 34:34very different. And so each each conference that
- 34:35we go to, it all has its own personality and the things that
- 34:39you can expect. You know, HTL is known for hypno
- 34:42thoughts Live, is known for summer camp, summer camp for
- 34:46hypnotists. And I think they did a beautiful
- 34:48job, especially this past year. I got to go this past year in
- 34:522024, and then I got to go in 2025 and 2025.
- 34:57I was in a different space. So for me, the conference was
- 35:01even better than it was when I went in 2024.
- 35:04So it's very interesting to to see the evolution of the
- 35:07conferences, but also our experiences where we are at that
- 35:10point in time when we go in. Constantly evolves.
- 35:14And for those people curious about perhaps going to Chicago
- 35:18for the Mid America conference, what are some of the things
- 35:22you're looking forward to there that make you want to be a part
- 35:26of that that might also inspire or encourage other people to to
- 35:29go as well? I like how many speakers there
- 35:32are and I love that question. I'm curious to know what your
- 35:34thoughts are too. There are over 100 speakers, and
- 35:40the reason I think that's really important is because there are
- 35:43multiple rooms going on at one time.
- 35:45So everybody's getting recorded, which is great, and that's
- 35:47always an option, but it leaves it very open to what your
- 35:53interests are. You know, if you go into a
- 35:56conference and there's 25 speakers or 35, it is more
- 36:00limited, whereas this now you have over 100 speakers and
- 36:04they're specifically looked at. You know, it's not just anybody
- 36:08can apply. It's yes, anybody can apply, but
- 36:11as the host or as the person that's in charge of the
- 36:13conference, they go through your social media, they go through
- 36:16the things that you're doing to see if you can absolutely teach
- 36:21on this and take what you've learned and bring it into a new
- 36:24light. And I think that's really
- 36:26important because there's an accountability there and you
- 36:29really want to not just level up for yourself, you want to also
- 36:32level up for your clients. Absolutely.
- 36:34But when you go to teach, you want those other, you want your
- 36:37peers to walk away with value and seeing you as somebody that
- 36:43they can ask their questions to and also learn from.
- 36:47And that takes it all of us to a new level.
- 36:50So I'm looking forward to the speakers and then especially the
- 36:53things that they have planned, which sometimes when we say like
- 36:57connection, we can think LinkedIn really quickly or like,
- 37:01oh, it was great to connect with you.
- 37:02But the way that they are starting to shift things now for
- 37:05mid America, they're having a lunch buffet, which is really
- 37:09cool because at like I mentioned at Hypnosis Live, they had a
- 37:12breakfast buffet and now they have a lunch one at this one
- 37:15where you get to spend time and sit down and talk with people,
- 37:20which when you're running from class to class, you don't
- 37:23necessarily get that. Or if it's 5:00 on the last day
- 37:26on Friday or Saturday, you're kind of fried and you're like, I
- 37:30just, I need a break. I need to go get some food and I
- 37:33need to process all that I learned.
- 37:34Whereas now it's in the middle of the day.
- 37:36So now you get that time to think about how your morning
- 37:39was. You get your time to talk about
- 37:40other people and see what their modalities are, see what their
- 37:43specialties are. And then there's also a VIP
- 37:46room, which gives it another layer of expertise.
- 37:50And then there's also the events on the evening along with the
- 37:53keynote speakers. I'm I'm extraordinarily excited
- 37:56about this conference. Yeah.
- 37:59And I, I am as well. And you know, the only US based
- 38:02conference I've been to is a Hypnot thoughts for the last
- 38:05four years. But Rich's enthusiasm for it,
- 38:10you know, he just seems so excited and all these kind of
- 38:13things that he's got organized. And I think, you know, when you
- 38:16when you get, you know, hypnotherapists are interesting
- 38:20people because generally very positive and very, very kind of
- 38:25creative kind of people. And you don't get that in a lot
- 38:27of other conferences. Like many conferences.
- 38:30It's a little bit kind of territorial and a bit kind of
- 38:33cliquey, but you know, the hypnotists are very kind of
- 38:35friendly and, you know, everyone's eager to share and
- 38:38kind of learn from each other. And I think it's an amazing
- 38:40community element that you don't get if you just kind of
- 38:43connected on online. But I think, yeah, for anyone
- 38:47listening, I think these conferences are in an ability to
- 38:51get lots of learning in a very condensed kind of period, but
- 38:56also just more than learning like the connection, the
- 38:59understanding, you can kind of get a lot done.
- 39:01So if you are able to get to Chicago, we're going to put a
- 39:04link in the description so you can kind of get tickets.
- 39:07And it takes place I think 17th of October.
- 39:11For 24 days and ticking right now, yeah.
- 39:14And. Then not far away at all and and
- 39:19Lenora, for anyone interested in learning more about you, you
- 39:23know, either your your book, you know working with you anything
- 39:27else like where's the best place they can find out more
- 39:29information on you. The best place to find out more
- 39:32is driven to bebetter.com. That's my website and all the
- 39:36good stuff is on there and that's the easiest 1 to connect
- 39:39with. And I love that you mentioned
- 39:42about connecting with people and that they're eager to share.
- 39:45Practitioners there and therapist there are absolutely
- 39:48eager to share. And that's another beautiful
- 39:50thing. At the end of the class, you get
- 39:51to go up and talk to them if you want.
- 39:53Or you can say, Hey, let's meet for lunch.
- 39:55I have a few questions about what you shared.
- 39:57And that's huge because I think so many people, I, I used to be
- 40:03like this, like, Oh my gosh, what if I, I, what will they
- 40:06think of me if I ask the question and in this community.
- 40:11Come, come with the questions. Let's talk, let's talk.
- 40:13I love questions and they literally enjoy answering
- 40:17questions. So they're so eager to hear your
- 40:19questions, which I think is a huge difference.
- 40:23Amazing. Well, I'm looking forward to it.
- 40:24And if you listen to this, you'd like Lenora either give us that
- 40:29website address again one more time.
- 40:31Driven to bebetter.com. Driven to bebetter.com.
- 40:34Check that out. I'll have a link.
- 40:36So if you want to come to Chicago, Lenora talking, I'm
- 40:39talking and we're going to have Richard Bandler, Chase Hughes,
- 40:42Rich Guzzi as well and about 95 other speakers.
- 40:45So it's going to be an amazing place to check that out.
- 40:48Lenora, thank you so much for giving your your time here.
- 40:51It's a privilege to speak with you and I will see you in
- 40:54Chicago in a few weeks time. Thank you so much for spending
- 40:57time with me and thank you to your listeners and I will see
- 40:59you soon. Thank you so much for joining me
- 41:03on today's episode of The Hypnotist, and if you've enjoyed
- 41:08today's episode, I would encourage you, if you haven't
- 41:11already, to hit the subscribe button or follow button to make
- 41:16sure that you're automatically notified of any future episodes
- 41:21that I release. Also, by doing that, it lets the
- 41:25algorithm know that you like this show, and that will put it
- 41:28in front of even more people that might not know that this
- 41:32show exists. So that would be helpful for me.
- 41:35And if you like the stuff that I do, take a moment just to have a
- 41:39look in the show notes or the description because there's lots
- 41:42of free things that I have to offer, including free hypnosis
- 41:45downloads without the intro or the outro like I'm doing now.
- 41:50So thank you again for joining me on today's episode, and I'll
- 41:53see you again soon for the next one.
