- 0:02Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:06commentary podcast where I mr. Joe Ford with my dear dear
- 0:11friend Fraser Gregory I'm talking, I think not give you
- 0:15permission to speak yet. Sorry, Arturo here, it's like 50
- 0:21of the dominators Fraser. I have an immediate question for
- 0:25you. It's what is the most explosive
- 0:29climax to a doctor who Story? I mean, there is a lot of
- 0:34explosions, isn't that there is question, the whole planet
- 0:38starts blowing up. It does, I think it must be?
- 0:41I mean, I'm big enough for your Brigadier.
- 0:44Mmm, will you stop it? Lays?
- 0:49Well, you know what? I think I have any flim-flam.
- 0:52Let's go in and watch the thing. That's cool.
- 0:54Watch then shall we episode 5? If here we go, here we go.
- 0:59In five, four, three, two, one. Play a little bit, highly privy
- 1:07to the massive bus, stop between showing haseman and Lincoln, but
- 1:12this is probably the sort of the most contentious creative
- 1:18episode of Doctor. Who isn't it?
- 1:19Yeah, it will be, it will be. So they look, so there's there
- 1:23was two bus stops. There was the one over the fact
- 1:25that he had Sucked off to there. Episodes and squish it and want
- 1:31to work himself. That's why Norman Ashby is
- 1:33writing this and which is the, it's the names of their
- 1:40father-in-law's, put our put together a couple.
- 1:44I got to say there's a Norman Ashby, you know, there's left me
- 1:46a very kind review on iTunes. Although that's the only other
- 1:51thing he wrote after this. Thank you very much.
- 1:55Well it got so that was one argument.
- 1:57Yes, and the other one was around the salt.
- 1:59The Quark rates because the baby, so you'd started license
- 2:02and the quarks out and the were appearing and all this media,
- 2:06you know, quickly was burning these book.
- 2:08And then when he's learning and got wind of it, they kind of
- 2:12went straight and said, look, you can't do that without Orson,
- 2:14you know, went high up the BBC and it was a fall, it was both
- 2:17sides. It wasn't just like you know,
- 2:19you've used our stuff without our permission was like well you
- 2:22know what you think you're playing at going above my head
- 2:24and you know, having a go at me boss how you think you've won.
- 2:27Yeah, I would never going to use them again.
- 2:30Bruises. So it was, which is a shame
- 2:33because they had the concept. I don't know if it was actually
- 2:36written the letter, the equipment didn't I, we know it's
- 2:39going to be a Jamie Centric story where he was killed I
- 2:42believe or Ridley's written hell yeah.
- 2:45Yes a bit. If you look back, what they've
- 2:47done this which is a classic they've done whether fear which
- 2:52is a classic in the you've also got the abdominal snowman so you
- 2:56know I are you forgot say that was a classic.
- 2:59It's a classic dish. Have you seen animation?
- 3:02I know yet. No, it's all right.
- 3:04Comes alive in unexpected ways to you know, it's on my
- 3:07Christmas list so hopefully I'll get that they've managed to
- 3:11correct many of the racial errors that occur are in the
- 3:16Abominable. Snowman is a bit troubling that
- 3:17pointers in it. So I actually think they're a
- 3:21little underrated because I thought oh you're right.
- 3:23I think the dominators and the Abominable snowmen people don't
- 3:26really focus on very much because it's yet he's in the The
- 3:29web of fear. I actually think the web of fear
- 3:31is salvaged by some fantastic Direction.
- 3:36Yeah. Whereas this a decent
- 3:38characterization in the Abominable snowmen and as we've
- 3:41discussed as far more going on here than we've ever given it
- 3:44credit for. Absolutely.
- 3:45I think, you know, without that fallen out you've got the next
- 3:49or the first the original Bristol boys.
- 3:51You know you've got a team of writers who you know?
- 3:55Well they from Bristol the wound but a whole you know, it's that
- 3:59sort of Of that sort of stay lean over Bobby and Dave Martin
- 4:02who are going to be a safe Pair of Hands.
- 4:04Where you going at the 70s even call rate.
- 4:07Who am I going to be scripts to will get Lincoln and his men to
- 4:09do one because I know that they're going to give us
- 4:11something really good. They're going to give us, you
- 4:16know, a solid Dependable script that's within budget.
- 4:19That's realizable. You know but it's also probably
- 4:21going to give us you know another excellent monster you
- 4:27know so you can see them running into the seventh He's if well
- 4:30not the eighties because GMT would have come and put the stop
- 4:33that I bought, certainly the would have had a lot more
- 4:36opportunities to to rank for the show.
- 4:38I think and leave a much stronger Legacy.
- 4:42You know what they've left is with is brilliant, but they
- 4:44could have thought. Well, what could I had so much
- 4:46more from them as well. People don't generally think
- 4:48very much of the Perry's that a pip and Jane Baker.
- 4:52Bob Baker date. Mart in this pair.
- 4:56Yeah. It's it's It's funny bull.
- 5:00I don't see why why not? I mean you know, pip and Jane or
- 5:05that the giant the bothered by the enjoyment of all Harold.
- 5:10You know that sort of enjoyment. Jesus Christ.
- 5:16I'm not jumping into no but you know what the script?
- 5:20Yeah. I mean they are they are the so
- 5:24you have he has been a Lincoln in the 60s you have the Bristol
- 5:29Boys in the 70s. He then go in the eighties with
- 5:31you know Pippin gin and the very much a bit of a fashion.
- 5:34You know, sort of bury you unique sort of writers, you
- 5:43know, you know you're getting a Pippen Gene story when you watch
- 5:48it. You know what it is?
- 5:49You see those fires? I don't mean disparagingly,
- 5:51reliable, reliable, don't know up hitting hands.
- 5:55You get Legacy your ear. They are you, you know, The
- 5:59identifiable as scripts from by Pippen Jim Baker, they are
- 6:04easily formable. They are let you see ones that
- 6:08you don't need to worry. Both there's ones like, as a
- 6:10script editor that you would go right there, we have written
- 6:13that. Let's have a quick look at it.
- 6:14I do need a change. Much about this awesome.
- 6:17I can let them crack on. I'll send them off to another
- 6:19draft while. I really focus on something.
- 6:22Like, I don't do in the bannermen or Bob Viper.
- 6:24A Dave mind, it was more. A case of, oh my God, how the
- 6:27hell are we gonna do this? This start with what, you know,
- 6:31the the then Frasier. I was the invisible enemy this
- 6:35way. Alright is ambitious.
- 6:40Yeah. And it's okay, we need to try
- 6:42and pawn awesome. You know, when you think of
- 6:45where the started off with the giant flaming skull London in
- 6:48Hyde Park, You know, they learn, they learn what they can, and
- 6:54can't rate what they should and shouldn't, wait very quick, very
- 6:57early on indeed learn what, what they can get away with and how
- 7:02far that can kind of push, what's doable in the, do the do
- 7:06push their not like when you see a safe and reliable, the safe
- 7:10and reliable in as much as you know, you're going to get some
- 7:12quality from that, they're not safe and reliable.
- 7:13As much as I know that I can just take my eyes off that, it's
- 7:17going to come in and it's going to be Oh God.
- 7:20Wait, what we're doing now? How we're going to be like this,
- 7:23you know, things like you know, the three doctors where it
- 7:26starts and you might the universe and I need this is you
- 7:29can just cut out a door of a laboratory.
- 7:34You know what happen when even when funniest joke about Bob,
- 7:38Jake and Doma is when they went right fine, we're being too
- 7:42ambitious. We've given you, the invisible
- 7:43enemies group. We're going to write on the
- 7:45world and we're going to set it in a load of caves because
- 7:47that's how a doctor who can do. Ooh well.
- 7:49Oh dear yes. But I do think as world and I
- 7:54feel all three of those pairings, they're aware that
- 8:00they're writing for kids. Yeah.
- 8:01Well, yeah, archive and that's a bad thing.
- 8:03I just saw a sequence say where Jamie was tying a bit of fabric
- 8:07around the course legs to trip him up that has not been geared.
- 8:11Adults, I'm doing you know, And I do think that is something
- 8:20that should always be there. In the back of your mind is that
- 8:23you don't write it specifically for kids.
- 8:26Be aware that they're watching. Yeah.
- 8:29Yeah, definitely. It's I think it's where
- 8:34Hinchcliffe and homes kind of fell down at times was was
- 8:37forgetting your, no Whispering contains that there were well, I
- 8:44would probably had more of it. At least as well.
- 8:47Patiently occasionally is, you know, that it is it is for kids
- 8:50but at the same time, you know, let's not underestimate what
- 8:53kids can and can't you don't get away with what we can and can't,
- 9:00you know, show kids because when you'd make it too much for the
- 9:03kids in go in, go the other way and be like, really simplistic
- 9:06me actually. Well, yeah, laughing, there's a
- 9:09few examples, a lot as well. What's occurring in the
- 9:13dominators phrases, so the doctor until we've escaped from
- 9:17the Domino ship, the figured out, the plan, the dominators
- 9:21are drilling holes. What we're going to do is going
- 9:25to drink a big shaft obviously you know got the VHS of the
- 9:29Dalek master plan. Dalek invasion of Earth out
- 9:31because they're going to drop a bomb down the shaft.
- 9:34It's going to explode the the planet, the size.
- 9:37So it is cracked like an egg and turn it off big mess of magma
- 9:41but that's going to be radioactive because I'm going to
- 9:43drop the big radioactive bomb in it.
- 9:44Well, I think we think that's not going to happen you know
- 9:47like we're not going to those volcanoes aren't going to erupt.
- 9:49Yeah, yeah. But him but again who comes up
- 9:53with the idea of Hope. Stop them.
- 9:54Was it Jamie. It's Jimmy, Jimmy says, well why
- 9:57don't? I just got to catch the bomb and
- 9:58the way down. You know what, I still think
- 10:02some of this is being written as comedy, you know, the female
- 10:05don't see in there. When anyway, they've decided
- 10:09that we're unsuitable for slave labor.
- 10:11So there are Going to leave us here alone when they go and
- 10:14Jericho's know they've actually said that you're going to die
- 10:17along with the planet. There's no way that I've been
- 10:20written as a joke. I'm saying are we go is a doctor
- 10:24doing a bit of techno Babble now.
- 10:27Yeah, so the doctors explained in the plot now with these
- 10:29chalk. That's very nice.
- 10:33You again for the kids. I feel like they're at school.
- 10:39Okay, firing Rockets through the magma into the molten core.
- 10:43Al to release what this great gash of energy.
- 10:46Yeah. And that'll suck it all up and
- 10:48that's how the flea. Yeah.
- 10:50So the idea is it's just going to be sort of like a service
- 10:52station for the Dominator flipping, just swoop in Refuel
- 10:56on radiation. Swoop off again for stopping him
- 10:59doing that in episode 2. That's what they've been doing.
- 11:01Open the been building up to it. So all they've been drilling.
- 11:05I've never been called the arguments between Fargo and
- 11:09toolbar is that because the quarks, as we've seen with
- 11:12quickie, whose once again on charge is that, you know, the
- 11:17the batteries one flat on a quark quite quickly.
- 11:20So the need to save that energy for doing the drilling and all
- 11:22this going off and shooting the Rover.
- 11:25Workforce is a waste of precious resource so they need all the
- 11:30time. They've been doing This drilling
- 11:33so that they can, you know, do this plan but we just don't know
- 11:36what the plan is. We've never know what the plan
- 11:38is up until up until now. But also as well, they want to
- 11:42because they've got, they've asked been about time, are
- 11:44drilling down blah blah blah. They want to test the Dulce has
- 11:47to see. Actually, are they going to be a
- 11:48threat to us? Yeah.
- 11:50It has the doctor. And then they go to the city of
- 11:52tested. The door.
- 11:53Seems they've tested them to say, well, actually, all these
- 11:55going to be a threat come, we'll just ignore them and crack on
- 11:58with, like, yes, we can because they are hippies essentially.
- 12:01What are they looking for? A double whammy on my, they want
- 12:03to Slaves if they have again. The have been testing them,
- 12:06they've been getting them to move all these rocks around and
- 12:09said, well, actually, if they're not a threat up, can we be
- 12:13useful? Could we take enslave this
- 12:14planet and use them as a slave Workforce?
- 12:16No, actually the little the too feeble bloody hippies, he's good
- 12:24for nothing. Hippies all we're gonna do is
- 12:27leave them kinda blew up. So did you see Trout the space
- 12:30there when he is? like just a little bit of
- 12:32chemistry you know we could we could have blow them up so he's
- 12:38going to ETA is definitely what I think of We're the second dog,
- 12:43sir. Yes, little fucking and I kissed
- 12:46destroying things. Here we go.
- 12:48Here's the first use of the the sonic screwdriver for doing
- 12:51something other than being a screwdriver.
- 12:52Ms was using it to cut through, cut through the wall.
- 12:57That's another good physical effect.
- 12:59Look at that. Yeah, I don't think it looks as
- 13:01good when the Daleks cut for a wall, right off the card.
- 13:04Dogs going through a wall. Do that looks almost everything.
- 13:10That's a classic affect. The Daleks cutting through.
- 13:13Daleks don't cut through enough things.
- 13:14Anyone and you see these for me, they did that.
- 13:16That lovely moment with Linda of Hawaii.
- 13:18Did the did, yes. Oh, that's marvelous.
- 13:20Yeah. That was really good, but, you
- 13:22know, you just don't see Daleks cut through things enough.
- 13:25When I say, I've been shall endure forever.
- 13:26Why a lot of this lately? You know, she must be a very
- 13:29memorable character. I'm glad Clique when he's awake
- 13:33because I feel as if the cops are gonna have a terrible time
- 13:35soon. Well, yes.
- 13:38Jimmy and cool. You're going to go full full
- 13:41DieHard know Jamie. I can see it it off.
- 13:46A Kang Seoul s so he's obviously feeling for it.
- 13:51You got Zoe in the doctor doing a bit of science here but you
- 13:54know. Absolutely.
- 13:55But they're making bombs. Yeah, always a terror.
- 14:01This is I love this, but you're all you've got to do is put this
- 14:03tablet encounter 10 and then it's going to explode.
- 14:06And so we sit in a gun Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four.
- 14:15I've heard you got to do it otherwise you'll blow up as
- 14:17well. Look around.
- 14:28This is what you miss having these episodes.
- 14:31You miss bits like that, don't you?
- 14:32Because how would you ever animate that?
- 14:34I would you ever? Yeah, you'll hold you even know
- 14:37to animate that. Your nephew.
- 14:38Wanted to fucking tickle, wouldn't even ormus arms or that
- 14:41bizarre animation. They had in the web of fear when
- 14:43they look like balloon people. Or again, what was that all
- 14:46about? Well, again, it's, it's what we
- 14:49said about, you know, the CSO and underworld, you know.
- 14:51It's it's a new way of doing stuff.
- 14:54So can I just say are things to work?
- 14:57That might be a quickie on the right of that bit of equipment
- 14:59there. And all he's doing is sort of
- 15:01wobbling and his arms are moving about, really excitedly bless
- 15:06him. Oh no, I don't want to watch
- 15:09this not Quark assassinations. Oh, oh no, he's quick.
- 15:15He's drunk, man, down man, down. They also go to take off.
- 15:24The battlefield. Are you all right, mate?
- 15:35Three for one. I could see as, you know, that
- 15:38sort of packaging, you get that polystyrene.
- 15:41Yeah, I think he was made out of that.
- 15:43That's what. But yeah, that he was, this is,
- 15:46this is really good because, you know, this is the point where,
- 15:49you know, toolbar has been right all along two of us been, they
- 15:52got, we need to these are destroying quarks the, you know,
- 15:56causing a nuisance were neither exterminate them.
- 15:59For want of a better word in, this is coming.
- 16:01As I say, yeah, you can do it off, you go.
- 16:03Well, no, he's learned his lesson now.
- 16:05He's like through all that. Long.
- 16:07He's been like should destroy them which destroy them in.
- 16:09Rock has been dope. See if the energy and now it's
- 16:12like it's going to come back and bite them on the ass.
- 16:14Whatever that is that point two of us learned his lesson so they
- 16:17closed our like, oh I seriously. Don't know said no, I'm going to
- 16:21steam drill. I'm going to stay in jail when
- 16:23again you know, if the actually listen to the toolbar and just
- 16:27wipe them out as soon as they saw them, the bag with
- 16:30virtually, there's one would work.
- 16:32Yeah. You know what the bit where you
- 16:34know he looks sort of downcast every time he goes, you know.
- 16:37I want to kill them and it's like, no, you won't kill them.
- 16:40That is pure like sitcom acting. Isn't it?
- 16:43Where it's just like, oh my word.
- 16:52All I believe a new question is just materialized, you know you
- 16:56know is gone hit me would the story be better if it had a
- 17:00musical score could Dudley Simpson have made it better.
- 17:05Well I mean we spent five episodes questioning whether
- 17:08this could be better at all we think is marvelous.
- 17:11Yeah I really like the sort of ambient music that plays in this
- 17:16it's the same music that's in the web Planet, isn't it?
- 17:18It's is it I think it is. You know, I think I can It's
- 17:22just sort of like stop music as a nipple.
- 17:24It's it is its atmospheric, it's not your Dudley, something would
- 17:27come in and give you a score, wouldn't you would give you
- 17:29something that you knew was that be?
- 17:32I know we keep talking about that same to Iraq.
- 17:34I do burn episode 4. There's this sort of like,
- 17:36Confluence of weird electronic sounds that plays over there
- 17:41with a sort of heartbeat go in as well.
- 17:43Yeah. And our for scored be as
- 17:46dramatic. I think maybe he's not goodly
- 17:49Simpson. Maybe it's like a trust him
- 17:50carry sort of soundscape. Good work.
- 17:53It would accentuate the weirdness?
- 17:55Yeah, a bit about that might work.
- 17:57I think. Even at the stage in Dudley's
- 17:59Courier, he's years been a bit more experimental.
- 18:02He's not just like horrible of the week that, you guess his
- 18:05scores in season 6 artery though, even even like the space
- 18:10pirates. I think the ice Warriors is the
- 18:12one again come about. The I suppose is the one you've
- 18:16just got this sort of him. Whoo.
- 18:24Yeah. That's you know that sort of
- 18:26thing I don't think is going to add anything to this this story.
- 18:30But like you say that's just sort of ambient background, more
- 18:34like a soundscape would work very well think.
- 18:37Oh, Jim Holland. He's come up with a question.
- 18:39I want to ask you this one. Go on then when Rusty Davis,
- 18:42does the long-awaited TV sequel to this story?
- 18:45You should it be called the Quark in space and And or sorry,
- 18:49the Quark in space. I because you have to say it
- 18:51that way for the jokes interior and is the time, right?
- 18:55For these little chaps to finally break free of their
- 18:58Dominator rulers em. Well, I'm very sorry to
- 19:02disappoint you by Lambie but we know that the Crocs are coming
- 19:04back and they're going to be back on Sunday in the power of
- 19:07the doctor and you know everything, that's a fact.
- 19:11Well everything will seem in the tree line is it's going to
- 19:13happen the first 20 minutes or so.
- 19:14And then the rest of the episode is just, you know, the doctor on
- 19:18the farm fight in the car. Until the last 10 minutes
- 19:20regeneration. And we know they had the lost on
- 19:23Gallifrey boys, stroking your ego over these comments.
- 19:26You know, I've been basically oh my God phrases of Judah, is he
- 19:33can stay. And we know that after that
- 19:38we'll have the 60th anniversary special, which is going to be
- 19:41the day of the quacks between David Tennant, and then we know
- 19:45that she got was first. Episode will be the power of the
- 19:48quarks. So, hey, it's gonna be amazing.
- 19:52I was a little companion is going to begin work for the next
- 19:55couple of years. Absolutely.
- 19:57You know, some pain is ways that are draining my electricity, he
- 20:00just needs to make sure that that Briggs doesn't get in and
- 20:04steal a voice. We saw in our mission is to make
- 20:07sure he gets his voice in there. Oh no, come on.
- 20:09Let's get Briggs as props here. Equate Corky, get it accurate.
- 20:13He does do it. Well, it would be interesting.
- 20:15I'll give him that. Here was a moment there between
- 20:18Jamie and Carl. It's like, leave me.
- 20:21It's like a war film. Now, she colors the wounded
- 20:25heroic Soldier lesser isn't a terrible time in this, you know,
- 20:31Kajol, bullied enslaved. Fire that coming out on top and
- 20:36I think it's, I'll beg your pardon.
- 20:38He were to stop it em. But, you know, it's a good good
- 20:46example for those bold. And middle-aged men that you
- 20:50can't be a hero. You don't have to be young and
- 20:54young and her street like phrase.
- 20:56I hain't you can be a hero like our that cocks.
- 20:59Who are you? You me a middle-aged.
- 21:02I know if one of us is pulled in no you got fired her hair going
- 21:05on there honestly. Thank you stop your missus just
- 21:12over there. What's going on?
- 21:19So the see device stoppie I've never heard that one before.
- 21:26Jesus. Have you ever done that before?
- 21:28No, I have not answered as he device know that a few times.
- 21:35Hi, Lucy. Facts of the brick, Lucy.
- 21:38Yeah, and you're here now. So I'll just say stop it.
- 21:41Fraser. All right.
- 21:43Oh this is it, this is it, he's got it.
- 21:45So what is it? It's a this is the form that
- 21:48they Going to drop into the core, so they've got five shots.
- 21:52They've got the four rocket shops that are fire Rockets down
- 21:56those ones, which is going to blow the crust of the planet and
- 22:00your turn it into like molten stew.
- 22:03Yeah. And then they've got the seed
- 22:05device, which is the one that's going to turn the all the
- 22:08volcanoes radioactive and give them the into this.
- 22:11If you are writable Source. Yes of energy on a Maria power,
- 22:15unimaginable power. So so what I've done is they've
- 22:21got totaled a shaft across to catch the the sea device as it
- 22:27falls. And now the doctor is going to
- 22:30go and carry honest. Let's talk about another phase
- 22:34has all good friend, Simon, heart, always tells us.
- 22:36There's no new stories have been cherry-picking from the first
- 22:40two. Dalek story do this every night.
- 22:43It's available. Oh my God, this is hilarious.
- 22:46And they like right we're off - a blowout.
- 22:48But I don't realize the bomb, it's actually despite shape
- 22:53that's Patrick troughton clearly Patrick troughton clearly.
- 22:56No one else I so marvelous. I mean it I mean I've been
- 23:00putting out the comedy for out this.
- 23:02Look at this is covered up beyond that quark and role in
- 23:04the bombing you know it. Yeah because you know years a
- 23:08comedy actor is Patrick troughton, you will you know get
- 23:11as much entertainment and laugh out of what he's doing is as
- 23:15possible and then that is that He's stuck in the door just
- 23:20literally clapped his hand. Like, you know, you Works
- 23:25everything for as much as button again.
- 23:26It that's why it works. That's why this series season
- 23:30works as well. It's because those three are
- 23:32having so much fun all the time even when she do, they remind me
- 23:36of I they were on were just kids.
- 23:38Yeah. Having Adventures.
- 23:39You know, they all feel that they've got the emotional
- 23:42intelligence of kids as well then.
- 23:44Like they're very reactive. The bring a nice model shop of
- 23:47the ship tick. Knopf and the legs going back up
- 23:50into it. Oh, dear.
- 23:56Are we so happy? I can't believe he got stuck in
- 23:59that door. I can't believe they went there,
- 24:04most of the ship started taking off as well, bugger it Tear
- 24:09right there. So this is it.
- 24:10We don't actually go back to the Dawson's at all.
- 24:13Do we know nor done now, we've kind of done their bit and this
- 24:17is the funniest bit of all. Stop the count, the hell?
- 24:19No, boom. It's quite alright.
- 24:27Jimmy the planet. See if I, but we're not doctor.
- 24:30It's you know what it is. A satisfying conclusion, isn't
- 24:35it? It really is.
- 24:37It uses all the elements they were going to do to do terrible
- 24:40things. This planet to defeat them.
- 24:42It's more of a cliffhanger than I thought as well.
- 24:45Because it's like it ends more on more of a cliffhanger because
- 24:48it's all that was going to be a localized explosion bit of
- 24:50volcanoes a and that's where it cuts.
- 24:52So you are going to be like, okay what happens next week then
- 24:56is this the sixth episode of the dominators or the first episode
- 24:59of the mind Robert. Which what's very interesting is
- 25:05that how that molten lava which we just saw, as stock footage
- 25:09looking very like molten lava becomes this sort of
- 25:13watered-down marshmallows at the - my trouble is it the full
- 25:17machine as the for machine? I believe it might be.
- 25:21But yeah I mean it we've got a bit left over from from Fury of
- 25:24the deep. You want a bit, it was a pocket
- 25:28or two awesome. What we're going to do with this
- 25:31job lat? Well, I'll tell you what, script
- 25:33coming up, oh, you're not going to be this way?
- 25:39Yeah, I'm sorry folks, we got to retire the machine.
- 25:42There are made some just stocked up.
- 25:45You're gonna have to use the lot right out loud.
- 25:48I will try and behave but there will be white stuff all over the
- 25:52set our card promise. When we do see to death I'm
- 25:54going to be behave too much. Okay okay we'll look would you
- 26:00do me a favor please and quick. He's here back now you can hear
- 26:05him. I mean you can't all be edited,
- 26:07nice out. But for all intents and purposes
- 26:10you can in fact hear him. So would you please ask him now
- 26:14about His Greatest Adventure of all before land, this is
- 26:19directly. Before he went to Portobello
- 26:22road, I'll pick him up so quickiy.
- 26:24What was your greatest adventure of all?
- 26:28Okay, now I got a fright. Really gotta free.
- 26:36You're kidding me. What are you ready for this?
- 26:40I'm ready for this year. He spent a little time on
- 26:43Gallifrey? Yeah, as a cleanup robot.
- 26:46This was the work he did. After a failed invasion of the
- 26:50planet by all accounts, the quarks flooded the capital and
- 26:56were fitted with bombs, But unfortunately they failed to go
- 27:00off. No, I mean, that sounds like a
- 27:03terribly exciting story of invasion of time move over, I'll
- 27:06come on, imagine the pork filling the panopticon, that
- 27:09would be amazing, imagine turning around, it's not
- 27:17sometimes, it's quacks, honestly, I think the thing that
- 27:22we have proven, though is a within this spinoff material
- 27:28Have lakes. The have the really have got
- 27:30legs and flap your arms and like I said, it the being made the
- 27:35most of I mean we know which they will make it a bit of a
- 27:39joke about big finish and how they will.
- 27:41You do literally turn a sentence into a six-part box set but you
- 27:50know that the Crocs haven't you heard they have you know gone
- 27:54out there despite the limitations of When they've
- 27:58actually been on screen and they have, you know, spread and
- 28:01succeeded throw out, you know you look at some like the
- 28:04mechanoids who were sort of brought in to be yeah, you know
- 28:08the next sort of quarks And the tried with that and it didn't
- 28:11really take off I think if they had pushed the quacks a bit
- 28:14more, you know, it would really have got there that would really
- 28:17of further question we should be asking is why the fuck they
- 28:21haven't turned up in the new series yet?
- 28:23Obviously having for some I do because I've seen I have seen do
- 28:27like a reed. Redesigned Quark for the Modern
- 28:30Age. Google.
- 28:32Have you seen it? Or is it got like proper legs in
- 28:34a proper body in? No, no, okay.
- 28:37I'll show you once we're done with this, right?
- 28:38I'll put it up with the marketing.
- 28:40It's actually, it's quite faithful to the original, but it
- 28:43looks at just a little deadlier. The original you looking for
- 28:48him. Are you talking about right now?
- 28:49Yeah, or Creed the same. Is this the end of the picture
- 28:56of it on Google is that it? Yeah.
- 29:04It's a bit em. It's cool box.
- 29:07Blitzer. Always a kittycat.
- 29:09You think the deadliest creature in the Galaxy?
- 29:12Yeah, that one I can. I don't know if that.
- 29:16Is it, you know? Hang on a minute.
- 29:19I don't know if that is a thing. Oh, there's one that looks like
- 29:22the race skating and they've got like problems and whatnot.
- 29:26Oh my God, look at this one here for, I've got, this is a very
- 29:28indulgent giving, we're doing an audio commentary, but then look
- 29:32from the, from the comic strips. Oh yes, it's a quark Army.
- 29:38Oh man. Now I don't think that was the
- 29:40one I was talking about. You do you know what I was
- 29:42talking about? Is this is the originals just
- 29:45done as a very beautiful picture.
- 29:47Oh yeah. Glistening domes yes.
- 29:50That is the, the original and the best.
- 29:53It is it is Fraser Joe. I don't think it's going to take
- 29:59you any brain power at all. To give me three reasons as to
- 30:02why people should go watch the dominators.
- 30:04And frankly, I think we've done a fair amount of encouragement.
- 30:07Judgmental ready. However, that is the format of
- 30:10this is the format. Yes.
- 30:12So number one, off you go. Number one would be the Crocs
- 30:16bugger it because of what we've literally just talked about the
- 30:21quarks being such a fantastic design.
- 30:23Such a memorable, design of one that has endured a one that has,
- 30:27you know, spread into the, the rest of the Doctor Who universe
- 30:31as it were, and the expanded universe, and all the other bits
- 30:35of media that, that we We've discussed in and obviously
- 30:39because you know quick he's just sat right next to you and I
- 30:41can't not say nice things about them.
- 30:43Exactly it go to bed. Very unhappy tonight I'm going
- 30:47to do something a little less obvious and I'm going to save
- 30:49the script and I think anybody thought I was going to say that
- 30:53and that is because I think we've identified really funny
- 30:58moments for out this story. Yeah, I will repeat.
- 31:02I don't think it's always directed for the laughs.
- 31:05Yeah. You can see them.
- 31:08The fellow he says, have you got an appointment of your Invasion?
- 31:10I mean, that is gold. Yeah, if that was in the great
- 31:13Williams times, I'm gonna be played to the heaven that show
- 31:18but also as well that it is doing something intelligent with
- 31:22the theme of pacifism. Whether it Deming it or not,
- 31:26it's there. And it is a small plot on the,
- 31:32on the part of the dominators. It does resolve itself in a
- 31:35satisfying way. I don't know if it would have
- 31:39stretched 26, but as five, I think there's enough there to
- 31:43keep it chugging along. Definitely, like I said, I think
- 31:47in the right hands, it could go to six, you know, put it in, you
- 31:51know, give give Thames another unit to find his feet.
- 31:53He could make that six for you. What?
- 31:55No mega-structure plot out of ten, you know?
- 31:58Absolutely, my second thing is going to be the direction then
- 32:04because other thing I'd expect an olive oil and I think - I
- 32:08wouldn't have said that if it's asked, is at the start, but
- 32:10haven't watched it now and having the conversation with
- 32:12you, you know where we have been, you know, particularly
- 32:14looking for things. I think the direction for most
- 32:17Barry does stand out a bit more than it should do the Legacy.
- 32:21There's a lot more interesting stuff going on there.
- 32:24There's more good angles. And, you know, well, framed
- 32:28shots, and nice close-ups done then.
- 32:32Actually, you would people have probably given it credit for the
- 32:35past so it's another one that I'm going to go back in.
- 32:37Next time I'll we watch this. I'm going to be paying a lot
- 32:39more attention to to the direction because I really do
- 32:43think, you know, especially with how he shoots Rago particularly
- 32:48you're at a lot to it. I think with these old-fashioned
- 32:52directors, there is like a they lean into the theatrical side of
- 32:59directing but I think it's worth remembering that can be very
- 33:02stylish as well when done well, definitely definitely.
- 33:06Okay, so then my next Is going to pay sorry the the trio of the
- 33:12dr. Jamie and Zoe.
- 33:15It's my favorite second doctor lineup.
- 33:19I didn't realize what a great showing for Jamie this was until
- 33:22you pointed out all those things and you're absolutely right and
- 33:25in fact I probably his best showing this year actually and
- 33:30raise the height is fairly critical about this on the
- 33:33commentary but I think maybe if he looked at the nuts and bolts
- 33:36of it he's been given a lot. To do.
- 33:38Yeah, I do. He's lusting after that can do
- 33:40as well for most of it. I mean, that's part of Jamie's.
- 33:43Current document doesn't know I'm lost in after Fraser Island
- 33:45so, you know, fair enough. So I think it is, I don't think
- 33:51on the right. I think people love that.
- 33:52S dr. Jamie Zoe.
- 33:53I'm sorry it is one of the best lineups.
- 33:57Yeah and I think what we need to do also bear in mind which we
- 34:01haven't discussed is that this is is always first story.
- 34:04This is yeah this is him. You know, when he probably has
- 34:08been introduced in the wheel space and then get it to carry
- 34:10on into this and the main Robin, this production block.
- 34:12So technically this is her first real one out as a is a
- 34:15companion. And there's a was a stark
- 34:17difference between her and Victoria.
- 34:20You know, Victoria who has been a very reluctant companion whose
- 34:23you know, always been on the verge of tears and a lot of
- 34:27other stories you know it goes. It's a repeated again, isn't it?
- 34:32Smell and Perry. You know, that change, that
- 34:37shift from someone who doesn't always seem like the want to be
- 34:39in the Tardis to someone who is bursting out the doors and see
- 34:42and wait, where's the next adventure?
- 34:43Where the we go? And that really comes across
- 34:46Brazil because she is so proactive, in this story, she is
- 34:50very much well, okay, you going to are going, I'm going to go to
- 34:53town with him and I'm gonna yeah, and well we need to do
- 34:56this now. And you know, she she's doing a
- 34:59lot, you know, for someone who was little you just stepped from
- 35:03one world. Into another altar is had seen
- 35:06the Rogue one of the evil of the Daleks extra kudos for the
- 35:09moment where Wendy, Pat, Barry has to be, pretended to be stuck
- 35:12against a wall with a look of horror on her face and you can
- 35:15literally see her thinking what's happened to my career.
- 35:18Honestly, this is what I'm doing.
- 35:20So I think the best thing we see is that one in the invasion
- 35:24where she's figuring out all the calculations to destroy all the
- 35:28spaceships. And then the next day, she's
- 35:29flirting outrageously with all the soldiers online.
- 35:32You can be cooler, honestly. Okay, well, back to you.
- 35:35So my third favorite thing about this, I'm going to pick the
- 35:39dulcian society which I've talked a lot about and I think
- 35:42that's like I said, it's supposed to be a hippies are bad
- 35:46and going but it doesn't it doesn't really learned that way
- 35:57for me. I think they were fascinating,
- 35:58you know? Like, aliens of the week Society
- 36:03of the week that you get, you know, it can be really difficult
- 36:07to build a world and build a fleshed-out society, where you
- 36:10actually, you don't understand people's motivations and the way
- 36:14they do things without it being spelled out your.
- 36:15But in this I think the really done it.
- 36:18Well, it's, you know, you can see say that hubris, you know,
- 36:21you go from like, you know, the partnership of the Boris
- 36:24Johnson's. You go to the Council of the
- 36:27Greeks, you go to the hall, you know, you can't.
- 36:30Save our planet, without an appointment.
- 36:32You know, piazza's never gets old.
- 36:34All right. No, it just runs through with
- 36:36hubris. And what's really you're
- 36:39planning on invading us? Well, I shall write that down
- 36:41and we're notepads. Oh yeah, the door syrians are on
- 36:46my third thing. Okay.
- 36:48Well it's your are going to cheat and say, two things from
- 36:51my last one. Is that right?
- 36:52No, we'll just do for 1500. Okay, well then, my third one is
- 36:57the sets of berry Newberry who offers Gleaming 1950s.
- 37:02Space cities. Yes, he offers us fabric with
- 37:051950s fly the sources. Yep.
- 37:09I'm gonna say 1960s psychedelia within the Flying Saucer.
- 37:14Yeah, that wonderful I just love that hexagonal set.
- 37:17Okay, it's getting blown to pieces and they could just take
- 37:19the few pics in terms of and show.
- 37:22I think very new be did some extremely imaginative work for
- 37:26other 60s. I think he very often did the
- 37:30Historical sales. Yeah.
- 37:32If I'm not mistaken and he very rarely touched, this might be
- 37:35one of his last, you know? But it just goes to show that he
- 37:40wasn't Running on Empty. His imagination was still on
- 37:43fire and this is a lot more visually interested than people
- 37:47give it credit for. Definitely, absolutely.
- 37:50It's right. Number four, I'm going to pick
- 37:52the dominators themselves. Well, I'll go and tour before
- 37:56the very essentially are the dominators European way.
- 37:59You know, I just love the design of them.
- 38:04They serve, they can make Toby, he took pointed out that sort of
- 38:07like to Deborah's Frankenstein. This esque makeup that one of
- 38:12the islands given, which really lets get some highlight the sort
- 38:15of intensity and that burns in Rago and Kenneth odds with his
- 38:22just gleeful sort of It is MM as well.
- 38:27So the to count as a portal, a fully need, the costumes are
- 38:30brilliant to just look so alien. But, you know, straight away
- 38:33then walk out. Those are the bad guys and then
- 38:36the just the dynamic between them, this whole sort of
- 38:38bickering, you know, Superior, under than, who doesn't really
- 38:45do what you supposed to do, when you do, you just don't get that
- 38:49in other stories. You know, you don't get sort of
- 38:52ice Warriors, sort of, you know? Challenging like who's in
- 38:56command? You don't get like yet.
- 38:57He's fallen out with each other. You generally get the one
- 39:00characterize villain. Yeah.
- 39:02Oh yeah, you don't get to yeah. You know, spurned lovers like in
- 39:09the workplace that's happening as well.
- 39:11If I mix work and sex, you know, then the dominators explains.
- 39:14Why? Okay, well then my next choice
- 39:18is cultured what I'm going to say the Practical effects
- 39:20because as we are watching this, I was seeing quarry's being
- 39:23blown up, Xbox is being blown up walls, being melted, your flames
- 39:28shooting across all over the by. That's a lot going on there, you
- 39:31know, for end of season. There's a bit of money on the
- 39:34screen, and I think no, really looks at the 60s for the special
- 39:38effects, but we're kinda heading in that direction where people
- 39:41are looking at Doctor, Who for a special effects.
- 39:44So have rather low to the event, Tape.
- 39:47The last thing. I'll pick then it.
- 39:48Is it going to be Cully, Uncle. Oh God.
- 39:52Yeah. I like, I like, I like that
- 39:54color. Isn't your normal action hero?
- 39:57That is not in that mold of topic pecs, you know, packs, the
- 40:03muscle-bound young, what it's supposed to be supposed to heal.
- 40:06Ya years, that sort of like bald and not, he's not quite
- 40:10middle-aged, but he's he's not the sort of, he's not like a
- 40:14teenager, he's an old account with With, he hasn't got the
- 40:17physique that you would expect with an action here or, you
- 40:20know, and it kind of speaks to one that society that this is
- 40:25the type of people that Society. This is the hero that they would
- 40:28produce and but organic, it's like we're not hollyoaks, you
- 40:32know, we don't need big flash. You know everyone kind of our
- 40:36now though, aren't we? We all know, you know, you
- 40:38wouldn't you wouldn't get away with this.
- 40:40Who Would You cast now as colley-urquhart snow was cool.
- 40:43He's also of overweight balding. Rambo om was good.
- 40:51A bit me really in here, know what you call him.
- 40:54He'll plead Alonzo in Voyage of the Damned.
- 41:00Russell Tovey? Yeah, he would do good.
- 41:02Are you meet a good Kali? No.
- 41:04I mean if you were going to cast an overweight boarding actor now
- 41:11to play this role of anybody, if I was gonna reconfigure video of
- 41:15her Jaws open, you were going to it.
- 41:16Sort of the brine Glover sort of Acts.
- 41:18Oh yeah, yeah. But I think we're sort of, you
- 41:21know, he's a little bit older would probably have that swim
- 41:25sort of stale about a like, I'm Not your typical Action Hero but
- 41:31so I'm going to dirt fly about that quarry on his enormous
- 41:33ears. I could all jump on his back.
- 41:36Okay, well my last thing is sorry I had to make you wince at
- 41:39least one last time before we go is you Fraser Gregory and the
- 41:47fact that you have Champions this story to such an extent, we
- 41:52Stockholm syndrome with it and I've started to enjoy the thing.
- 41:58No, I think I think celebrating the what are considered turkeys
- 42:05in Doctor Who if one of the best things that you do and is one of
- 42:11the best things this podcast Styles and it's you bring those
- 42:14two things together yet. Man you got fucking all yellow
- 42:18gold. Thank God very kind of in that
- 42:21is exactly what I'm trying to do with you know Champion it and
- 42:25make people look at it a different way and go actually.
- 42:27Yeah. You know I've written it off in
- 42:30the past for whatever reason but if we go and look at it from a
- 42:32different angle or that way or for consider this element then
- 42:35actually it'll stand up a bit better than there.
- 42:37Wasn't some people, lots will be like agree with us until be
